One fateful night has changed the Agate family forever. When leaving church, Pastor Lucas Agate, his wife Emily, his quiet son Chris are involved in a car accident when his daughter Harmony swerves from a boy standing in the middle of the road. The car crashes into a tree. From the crash, Harmony is convinced someone is in the road, but her father doesn’t believe it. Chris emerges from his silence and starts speaking about what Harmony is seeing. Chris’s story talks of a child who turned into a monster after some young boys bullied her. Chris swears never to speak a word, even when the boys are killed. With a small community rocked, The parishioners of Pastor Lucas’s church start losing faith.

Chris’s story is puzzling to his dad but it sinks in that this isn’t Chris, but his spirit as he and Emily were killed in the crash. Once confessing, Chris can finally rest with Harmony now carrying the weight of his guilt. Surrounding the car are more ghosts who want their story heard to gain peace.

This issue jumps in with Lucas and Harmony coming to grips with what has happened. The scenes are cold and reflecting the losses they have endured. Leaving the house in silence, Harmony sets out for some errands. Lucas is still waking up when he’s approached by a spirit wanting to talk.

With Harmony gone, What happens when it’s Lucas now talking with the spirit? What story do they have to tell? Readers watch with chills as the spirit confesses their tale. With a new dynamic in play, will things go smoothly or crash and burn? The final act leaves nothing behind as it closes this chapter definitively while featuring a final panel that adds more to the mystery at hand.

BREAKDOWN: Bunn role reverses from last issue’s fallout with Lucas stepping into the ghost conversation. The opening moments give the readers a sense of how things have weighed down the family with no real sense of improvement. The ghost appearance made for an interesting dynamic as Lucas fills in for Harmony. Its’ story is arguably the strongest pint of the book as the ethics behind it leave much to be figured out. The results show that nothing is “normal” about how these meetings are conducted. Bunn filters in Lucas’ anger with a newfound layer into his character. The closing will catch readers off-guard but makes for more drama as the story progress int the following issue.

Art duties are split again with Leoomacs taking the main timeline and Luckert stepping in for the flashback story. This is a winning formula as the story comes across to readers as truly told thru the spirit’s eyes. Luckert’s visuals bring the emotional backstory into the spotlight. It wastes little time in creating the sense of fear haunting the ghost and the burden now on their shoulders. Leomacs makes the opening scenes click with no words uttered. It’s only body language that the readers can cypher. The panels speak volumes on how things are deteriorated between Lucas and Harmony. It’s countered with some truly horrific imagery stemming from the ghost story. The closing panel is very subtle but is sure to set the Agate family into another tailspin before it’s all said and done.

For this entry, we’re taking a closer look at a brand new series/event on the Comixology Originals line that showcases a writing debut from someone who fans may know from another form of pop culture. From the band Scissor Sisters, Scott Hoffman (aka Babydaddy) kicks off his comic beginnings with a very eye-catching tale. NOSTALGIA #1 by Hoffman, Danijel Žeželj, Lee Loughridge, and Steve Wands, presents a futuristic mystery that is going to make waves on New Comic Book Day. Let’s have a closer look, shall we?

The story beings with a cover of “Musocity”, a music zine featuring Craig Mancini aka NOSTALGIA on the front page. The article breaks down his stage presence and the experience of watching him play. Things shift to NOSTALGIA on stage and the euphoric trance he keeps the crowd in while playing. In a flash, the crowd disappears and Craig is overlooking the city from his lavish apartment. Craig’s mood is that of despair and exhaustion looking at used to have been.

Craig’s roadie Lexi comes in the room and makes the impression Craig has fallen into a difficult time. Craig dismisses her and turns his attention elsewhere. The visuals readers see is a collage of the world Craig lives in. Much like today’s world, there is an assault of all forms of medias and opinions. Needing a break, Craig escapes into the dark city needing to clear his head.

Craig returns back to the Ziquara building and is passed along a package. From the deminer of the doorman, this isn’t the first time a package like this has arrived. Craig decides this time to accept it. Upon opening it, Craig finds an image of a shell, which sends Craig on a path to a life changing moment.

What is the symbolism of the package? Is Craig ready to find out what is behind these deliveries? Readers ride along as Craig maneuvers through the volatile landscape to reach a meeting place and a surprise he is not ready for. The final panel will raise some questions until the next chapter hits the digital shelf, so get ready.

BREAKDOWN: Hoffman presents a unique vision of life after music with the current issue. Craig comes across as a multi-layered character. Hoffman’s connection with being a musician brings a distinct approach when conveying Craig’s emotions after the spotlight is gone. Craig ranges from self-loathing to reluctantly bored with how things have now become. The small interaction with Lexi brings that right to the readers’ attention early. Even when he ventures out into the public, his attitude is one of loss. Only when he decided to take a chance with the package does it appear a spark got underneath Craig to do more. The current social climate plays a strong part in guiding the story. With the emotions of the public loud and aggressive, the toll it takes on Craig is evident. However, with the surprise at the end shifting gears, it will add a new dynamic to Craig that should be catching to see play out.

Žeželj kicks off the issue with a stunning portrait of how music has encompassed Craig and the crowd when he is on stage. The coloring done by Loughridge gives those panels an original feel that’s all its’ own. Craig’s venture into the city pops off the pages as the city itself has its’ own story to tell. The mannerisms of Craig feature how much he has fallen on a rough patch and the curiosity of the package actually gives him a weird speak. The journey to the meeting spot builds to a solid closing act, topped with a loud statement caping off a notable flashback time period. Great closing panel to send readers home and having them want to return for the next issue on.

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand-new series dropping from Image Comics that is one of the wildest reads you will have on New Comic Book Day! Some say “Hell isn’t so bad if you know someone there,” but I’m sure that they never encountered a situation like what unfolds in this issue. In Hell We Fight #1 by JOHN LAYMAN (CHEW) and JOK takes readers on a trip that needs to be read to be believed! Let’s take a deeper dive and see what’s happening here, shall we?

The story begins in a classroom with Alexander “Xander” Waterford giving a decertation to his class about frogs. While as detailed as it was, Xander incorrectly did the assignment. It wasn’t supposed to be a Biology report. It was supposed to be a BOOK report. Embarrassed, Xander grows a big hatred for frogs, taking his anger out on them. This hatred didn’t go unnoticed by Bufobeelz, The Frog Devil. It emerged and took Xander into the depths of the Mississippi River, drowning him.

When he wakes, he’s in a place that no one wants to be in. Xander is in Hell. While there, he’s made “friends” with Midori Fukada, a young assassin, Ernie Comstock, who was killed by a deadly axe stuck in his head and Balpha-Dagon, an annoying fire-breathing demon. On this day, the group decided to embark on a quest for some ice cream. What they got instead was more than they bargained for.

What has this group gotten themselves into? Can Hell actually get any worse? Readers find out quickly that the best laid plans can go up in smoke, even in Hell, as the group becomes entangled in an adventure that is sure to become more dangerous. Considering the final image closing the chapter out, the group had better be ready to fight because there is no easy way out of their troubles.

BREAKDOWN: Layman infuses elements of adventure and dark humor within the opening shot of this series. Xander is a compelling character to introduce readers to initially. His story brings in a fantasy element early into these pages. Once Xander meets up with the others, the book’s pace moves very fast to give an idea of why things are as they are. The others in this adventurous party get smaller origins but enough to connect with readers. The ‘Ice Cream Heist” plays out for an engaging tale but the hook is the surprise ending. What leans into being a safe quest rapidly swings into dangerous territory heading into the next chapter.

Jok’s depiction of Hell has a very unique look to it. The use of colors gives a deceiving look to what Hell appears like. The imagery looks like a twisted fairy tale landscape. The creatures roaming the land stand out and look anything but normal. Even with Balpha appearing to be a “teenage demon”, his look comes across as a mirage due to his facial and eye expressions. The one character that makes a huge impression when she appears is Midori, who commands the panels with her presence. This is all capped off with the twist ending visual leading this group into the unknown danger awaiting.

Four no-so innocent souls come together on an unlikely escapade that readers won’t be able to escape from. Layman and Jok present a wildly imaginative trek thru sharp writing and eye-catching visuals that are sure to leave an impression. Don’t pass it giving this a read on New Comic Book Day.

For this entry, we’re checking out the pen-ultimate issue of the latest story arc from an Image Comics series that has generated quite a buzz amongst comic fans. Ever since its’ initial kickstarter run, the hype behind this series has been enormous. Knowing who’s the creative masterminds behind the series, it’s a no brainer on why it comes with justifiable hype behind it.

NOCTERRA #15 by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Marcelo Miaolo and Andworld Design brings the battle against everlasting darkness to a screeching halt. Lets take a closer look and how this arc ends, shall we?

Ten years ago, the world as we know it changed. There was no more light. The sun was gone. In its’ place was endless darkness. People were turning into creatures known as shades. Artificial Light is the only thing keeping others from turning. Valentina "Val" Riggs aka Sundog is a ferryman whose fully lit eighteen wheeler moves goods and humans through the cold landscape. During one of her runs, Val came across Augustus McCray (Gus) and his grand-daughter Bailey, also known as Piper. The pair threw an offer in Val’s direction that she couldn’t say no to: Transport to an unknown safe haven and help cure her adopted brother Emory.

Since that time, the “Sundog Convoy” has faced many challenges including the deadly Blacktop Bill, who’s made it a mission to kill Augustus, or “the man who killed the sun”. Along the way, the convoy has gone through changes but the mission remains the same. As they head towards the mythical place known as Eos, the danger hasn’t stopped growing its evil hold.

This issue picks up where the convoy has arrived in Eden, a land of eternal sunshine. Bailey is trying to process her grandfather’s equation to fix things but it appears to not be correct. It is possible the equation was to lead people to Eos for safety. The Humanoid protectors of Eos known as The Glares are pressing for the convoy to decide if they are staying or going, but someone else has arrived that causes a change in plans.

Blacktop Bill has traced them down, bringing darkness with him. Shades are forming in the utopia. With their backs against the wall, Emory comes up with a plan. The plan is a long shot, but with Bill taking the fight directly to the group, they are running out of options. How does Gus’s equation fit into all of this? Can Eden be saved? Readers bare witness to Emory playing a deadly game and taking a chance that defines high risk/high reward. The repercussions are huge. With stakes never higher, the closing act feels like a roller-coaster heading into a final page that will surely leave readers speechless and waiting with baited breath for the conclusion in July.

BREAKDOWN: Snyder ramps up the action heading into the arc conclusion. Emory’s risky play demonstrates the critical situation they are in. With everything crashing around them, there is no time to play things safe. Readers can easily identify with the bold move as victory feels out of reach, but they can’t just surrender either. Blacktop Bill continues to be an impressive antagonist with his power play at Eden. The ruthlessness of his approach in dealing with Emory’ move resonates off the panels. It is a classic good vs. evil set-up which Snyder pulls off with ease and precise skill. Right thru the final act, the pacing matches the intensity of the situation leading to the jaw-dropping close of the issue.

Daniel’s art encompasses the danger of Bill’s threat right from the start. Bailey and Emory’s reactions speaks volumes thru their eyes as they see him appear in Eos. This is accompanied by a fantastic 2 page full-panel spread showcasing Bill bringing terror to Eos. The quieter moments also jump out as Emory has a moment with Bailey that feels like a farewell when readers see it. The battle with Bill and Emory holds nothing back with panels of Bill’s growing enjoyment of what he’s putting Emory thru. Daniel displays the varying emotions thru their encounter leading up to a spectacular closing image to send things into a bigger frenzy when the series returns.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

With hope slipping away, the Sundog convoy throws caution to the wind in an attempt to face the darkness in an issue that can’t be missed! With incredible storytelling and amazing visuals provided by Synder, Daniels and the team, Nocterra shifts into another gear with no signs of slowing down.

PHANTOM ROAD #4 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re diving further into the mystery surrounding Dom and Birdie’s highway to Hell in the pages of Image Comics’ hit new series. PHANTOM ROAD #4 by Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands picks up where the reluctant pair are heading now and the latest addition to the mix ended up after last issue’s shocking ending. Let’s not delay any longer and take a closer look, shall we?

Dom and Birdie’s paths crossed on a fateful night when a mysterious object turned their worlds upside down. Crossing over into a mirrored dimension with faceless figures coming for the powerful object, the pair is trying to make some kind of sense of everything. Last time readers saw them, they were running from the law after killing a faceless figure, who turned human shortly after.

The case is drawing more attention with the addition of FBI agent Theresa Weaver into the mix. Weaver starts putting things together and it appears there is a personal connection to the case. Unfortunately, Weaver is kidnapped from her hotel room by a masked assailant.

This issue picks up with Dom and Birdie still on the run (editor note: The pair wasn’t featured in issue #3). The conversation is small talk but reassures the readers that they still have a plan on what to do with the object.

The story shifts to the alternate dimension with a young girl standing in the path of the faceless. With a reassuring voice telling her to remain calm, she looks back at the pack before snapping back to our reality. The girl is actually FBI agent Theresa Weaver. Weaver is detained in an empty room. A masked man comes in and starts interrogating her.

What secrets are revealed during this conversation? What is “Project Jackknife”? Readers get more insight on the personal connection of the case to Agent Weaver, with information that even she doesn’t know. The final moments present more tension and uneasiness as the closing moments showcase all actions come with a grave cost.

BREAKDOWN: Lemire gives more balance to all the major players with the events of this issue. Dom and Birdie’s “partnership” is one that continues to be uneasy. Both have secrets in their pasts that block them from fully trusting the other. This plays well building towards one’s actions and the repercussions following it. The Agent Weaver portion of the book will be the one fans are most talking about. The interrogation levels new insight on the agent while giving the whole case a much bigger feel. Pacing worked well to give each story time to grow for a big impact before ending the issue.

Walta’s art doesn’t shy away from the fatigue wearing on both Dom and Birdie. Their expressions during their conversation paints a bigger picture of how they’re truly feeling in the moment. Agent Weaver’s portion of the book comes across blunt and to the point, much like the scene plays out. The panels demonstrate a solid back and forth with the questioning with well placed jumps to the past mixed in. There’s a gritty, dark feel throughout the pages which adds more layers to the deeper story at hand. Excellent closing panels to send readers on to the next issue.

For this entry, we’re checking out the debut issue of the next chapter stemming out from a GLAAD Media Award-nominated sports comic under the Boom! Box imprint of Boom! Studios. FENCE: REDEMPTION #1 by C.S. Pacat (Dark Rise), Johanna the Mad (Wynd), Joana LaFuente, and Jim Campbell re-introduces readers to the world of Halverton and the players involved in becoming the elite in fencing. Let’s take a closer look at see what’s unfolding here, shall we?

The story begins with the fencers of Kings Row now set-up at Haverton, deep into training. Their coaches are observing and critiquing their technique. There is a noticeable difference in commitment from the team members. With the state championships looming, this is one of the last times the team can prepare for the event. The pressure is mounting and it can be seen on their faces. One player feeling this especially is Nicholas, who is determined to land a “flick’. Nicholas may not be the strongest skill-wise amongst the fencers but has arguably the biggest upside. This is a vast contraction to Seiji, who comes off unphased by what’s around him. However, others think he’s still not over a match with a rival, who is considered the best of the best. The team captain, Harvard, doesn’t seem to phased by what’s coming but the coaches are concerned with his time management.

Making matters worse, Aiden is late and doesn’t seem to be that committed to the team. This brings up more frustration which Aiden plays off, explaining how Harvard and him have known each other long enough to know what expectations should be. Once everyone arrives to the training, the coaches drop a bombshell on the group. The group from Exton is coming to observe the training. This causes a reaction out of Seiji, because he knows Jesse is coming with them and there’s a history between the both.

How will the team fare with Exton swinging thru? Can Nicholas improve in time to make an impact? How will Harvard step up to the challenge? Can Seiji confront the ghosts from his past? Readers will get some answers as there is more to this match than anyone realizes. The final page will set the pace for the rest of the series as a challenge is thrown down that will either make them into stars or break them in the process.

BREAKDOWN: Pacat sets in motion a high-stakes challenge some team members might falter trying to hit their marks. This issue focuses heavily on Nicholas’s training as he pushes himself to become more. Readers see how he is trying to hone his skills for the bigger challenges and gives the sense that he, not Seiji, will be the one having to face off against their biggest rival at the end. The other key members of the team (Aiden, Harvard and Seiji) get time to give new readers a sense of their stories but not enough to get the full picture. The main takeaway is not everyone is ready for what’s coming. there is a distinct change when the team from Exton arrives. It closes events out with a solid ending leading into what will be the driving plot of the series.

Johanna The Mad and LaFuente bring a energetic view to the drama surrounding this tale. Nicholas’s drive is well-illustrated thru his facial expressions in this issue. Readers can easily connect with what he’s trying to accomplish and get a small payoff near the closing act. There is a great sequence where Bobby asks one of the Coaches about a technique breakdown. The art team displays this as a solid guide to readers not well-versed in the sport of fencing. The closing moments display the tension built with Seiji plus the reveal of what looks to be an underlying plot developing into next issue.

The saga kicks off an intimidating figure known as Draxus sitting at the helm of a spaceship. Draxus is leading a space fleet of immense size in search of the “Sharsrum” Weapon. Nothing more is known about this object’s capabilities, but looking at the size of the army trying to obtain it, the Sharsrum could be a game-changer for control of the universe.

Meanwhile on earth, a young man by the name of Grant Garrison is preparing to brave the dangers of High School. His past seems to be in question as he was found with amnesia on a highway. Principal Murray welcomes him and gives him an alibi to fit in undetected. From here, Grant is paired with Eli Sanchez. The pair makes fast friends as they head to class. In this classroom, Grant meets Jen, Eli’s step-sister. As the trio heads to lunch after class, no one is prepared for what happens next.

Grant witnesses a meteor heading right towards the school! There is no time to react. Everyone is caught in the impact!

Coming to from the crash, Jen sees Grant to find a whole new world in front of them. Everyone is gone. The only thing left is a creature in front of them looking primed to attack. As they process what is going on, an object attaches itself to Grant. The object shoots energy thru Grant, transforming him into something else. Grant mentions his mind is “Awakening”!

What has happened to Grant? Is this the key to his amnesia? What of his classmates? Readers witness first hand the birth of a hero as Grant steps up to face to creature. However, not everything is as what it seems. The mystery is just beginning but readers will want to buckle in as the story of Grant Garrison starts its’ journey.

BREAKDOWN: Craig drops an impressive debut issue pulling heavily at the influences of Jack Kirby. Grant’s mysterious background is a big part of this opening issue, but where it shines is post meteor. Once the connection is made with the “Starstorm”, Grant seems to have everything come back to him just enough to address the situation at hand. Craig still keeps some secrets kept close as the suit’s true potential hasn’t fully be unveiled. The story moves pretty swiftly leaving readers with enough to form ideas of where things are leading.

Doing double duty, Craig (w/ Finestone on the colors) dives into the classic sci-fi elements. The two-page full panel spread lets readers know how important the Starstorm is without even digging into its’ background. The reactions in high school play out as one would expect with a great panel pre-meteor impact. However, the image readers will most remember from this issue is the “Awakening” 2-page spread. Absolutely love the coloring and multiple character faces of what’s to come with Grant’s story. It is such a throwback to Kirby Sci-fi (and that is NEVER a bad thing) that it gives the following action such a vintage superhero feel. The final panel adds more questions to what is really going on but closes things out enough for readers to jump back in next issue.

LOCAL MAN #4 by by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio dives further into the mystery surrounding Xaver’s return home and a mounting body count following him. Let’s take a closer look at the latest chapter, shall we?

JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK’s tenure as a super hero has been put on indefinite hold after publicly being removed from the team Third-Gen. Returning home to Farmington, Wisconsin after the public disgrace, Jack tries assuming a “normal” life. However, his super hero past won’t let him go as he’s now connected to the deaths of former enemies The Hodag and Frightside. With a killer on the loose and setting Jack up for the fall, Jack breaks the rules of his Third-Gen termination & attempts to resume his heroics.

This issue picks up with Jack (and his dog) investigating a restricted water quarry where Hodag tipped off Frightside about before both were killed. He’s interrupted by Chief Bucholz who breaks the news about Frightside. Jack was last seen around both before their respective deaths. Not ready to be brought in, Jack jumps the fence and hits the water. During the swim, he finds an underground tunnel into a secret lair.

Once inside the lair, Jack begins to uncover some secrets he is not ready to deal with. He’s also paid a visit by an old teammate: Camo Crusader , who isn’t ready to forgive and forget what Jack “has done”. Readers find out more clues to why everyone hates Jack along with more clues to the bigger mystery at hand. However, nobody is ready for the later half of this issue with big surprises that change the course on everything! If readers think that’s a big deal, just wait for the final panels as there’s one last reveal to be told that gives some clarity on what to expect next.

The flashback flip-portion of this story will also give some deeper clarity on the love triangle between Crossjack/Neon/Camo Crusader that plays into present time. Expect more shocking moments with that concluding last image.

BREAKDOWN: Fleecs & Seeley start putting the puzzle pieces together behind the mystery unfolding. Seeing Jack being the only voice of reason has been a particular take that pays off each time. The meeting between him and Chief Bucholz worked to demonstrate this. Bucholz would like nothing more than to pin this on Jack due to his wife’s past with Jack. This blinds him from seeing what’s going on until he discovers evidence that backs up Jack’s actions. The moment fans will be talking about is the confrontation between Jack and Camo. The tension has been building for 4 issues now and readers get a solid payoff (even given more weight based off the flashback story). The pacing of the story keeps things moving along right to the huge reveal in the final moments. Jack’s road to redemption takes one step forward and two steps back making it compelling reading each time out.

The art reflects this heavily. Even when Jack appears to catch a break, his reactions never show too much joy. The events preceding have left him broken but he moves forward. The confrontation with Camo plays out well within the panels. The lead-in doesn’t falter when they meet. Seeing Jack outmatched and somehow maintaining made for great storytelling. Without revealing too much, the fallout of the Jack/Camo moments will be one readers will be chatting the most about. Those panels hold nothing back as the emotional build-ff comes thru with the action and resolution. The final panel leaves a few more questions to ponder.

The flip on the art style plays right into the nostalgia of those early Image comics. When readers see that, it literally is a trip back to that era and gives the current moments more weight for a bigger payoff.

Deep Cuts #2 by KYLE HIGGINS & JOE CLARK, HELENA MASELLIS, Igor Monti and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou continues to highlight the history of Jazz music with a stop in Chicago 1928. Let’s not wait another minute and see (and hear) what’s happening here, shall we?

Last Issue, the journey started in New Orleans in 1918, showcasing a young musician’s rise in finding his voice in the city’s music scene. This issue kicks off in a dark theatre in 1928. A man is on stage, talking to the audience about how his instrument and the music it plays gives him life. As he continues to speak, the lights come on to start a musical number. However, this moment proves to be a rehearsal and the direction it goes in is one not hitting the high notes.

Immediately, the production is stopped by its’ director Gail Gelstein, who emerges from the empty seats with changes in mind. However, the pressure is building for a hit show because Gail’s show “Kansas, Oh Kansas”, is featured on Broadway. The theatre manager Herman challenges her to double down on the strengths of the show: the music. If there’s anything to save a bad show, it’s a great song. He gives her an ultimatum: Deliver a hit jazz song in 48 hours. The story centers around someone becoming a jazz man, so Gail is questioned why there’s no jazz music.

Gail reveals she doesn’t know Jazz, but Herman tells her to make it happen, no excuses. With time not on her side, Gail heads home to Chicago for a wedding. When she’s talking with her parents about the song she’s working on, Gail reveals it has no title. Her dad gives her a tip for help in the form of Ray Stroh. Stroh works for Wolverine Publishing and might be Gail’s only hope for making a hit.

Can Gail and Ray pull this off? Will the show be saved? Readers see Gail’s quest into making a great song isn’t such an easy path. There are many stumbling blocks to overcome but Gail’s not letting go of finding the hit she desperately needs. The story shifts into some different directions leading to a surprising final act. Gail’s search for the music might not be the only thing she (along with the readers) discovers along the way before closing off this chapter.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Clark continue to display the power of jazz with another strong issue. Gail’s story is one of determination mixed with self discovery along the way. Knowing she needs to incorporate jazz into her production while not knowing anything about it made for a unique dilemma. The dynamic between her and Ray works well as his excitement to help is balanced out with her drive to secure the song. Another great sequence is the banter with her brother Toby. His unlikely advice plays a big part in sending the story into a new direction. The revelation of why Gail wants to make this song work so badly is a great twist that readers can easily comprehend. It all ties back to the power of music and the connections it makes. This all leads into the final act which comes off as a bit of a surprise, but plays out showcasing the impact the music has truly made in one person’s life.

MASELLIS makes a huge splash with the art in this issue. The style feels vintage with elements of abstract mixed in. The time period is fully captured within the panels. There are many incredible full-page panels sprinkled throughout this issue. The one kicking off the musical start sets a huge tempo for the rest of the issue. Gail’s train ride form New York to Chicago is another noteworthy visual montage capped off with her starring out the window while the conductor announces the arrival. Gail’s attention is lost in the song she’s building and the color scheme used to transition (excellent work by Monti) shows how lost in thought she had been in. This comes back full circle on the train ride back, led in by the panel with Gail standing in front of her suitcases. Masellis delivers on projecting the energy of live music with Gail’s time in a few night spots. The crowd reactions let loose on how the music affects them. The emotional reaction isn’t left there as sharp readers will see through the issue: the only times Gail smiles in this issue is when she’s listening to music. It’s a testament to how impactful music can link with someone’s soul.

The story begins with the mysterious figure known as No-Name flies toward the Omphal, the humongous asteroid located in the center of the universe with more secrets inside. There is a group of individuals inside the rock known as the Eight Intra-sleepers waiting for his arrival. No-Name has an artifact in his possession that they have a vested interest with.

No-Name brings them the Omnigraal, which on the surface looks like an artifact but it is revealed to be much more than that. Once presented, No-Name activates it by pulling it close and absorbing it. The elders divulge that the artifact is a receptive weapon that absorbs everything, including No-Name’s memories. The elders set him down and mind-link with No-Name to restore his thoughts. The life story of the Metabaron is set to be revealed.

The past begins with a young No-Name and his father-mother on a mission to slay a beast known as a Leodactyl. The pair embark on their dangerous task with precision strikes. Readers witness first hand how dangerous and violent the pair can be to accomplish their goals. However, that was only the tip of the iceberg. One they return from their mission, No-Name is given his final test to prove his status as the heir apparent. He is challenged by his father-mother to a duel to the death! “Victory or Death” are the only options. Readers witness the brutality and the emergence of No-Name’s ascension to becoming a Metabaron.

The journey doesn’t stop here as No-Name begins his quest to acquire the most powerful weapons in the universe. Can he step up to the mantle left for him? With have has previously transpired, does he have enough strength and determination to finish the mission? Readers are taken on a wild ride as No-Name attempts to conquer such weapons like the Transpineal Eye and the sword of Dreams known as Praxis to name a few. The action raises the stakes at each turn all leading to an ultimate confrontation. The conclusion will leave no doubt in anyone’s mind on why the legend of the Metabaron is known and feared throughout the Incal universe.

BREAKDOWN: The story of the Metabaron is a very unique one. The mentality of No-Name is one of “mission over everything”. From starting out as an ambitious fighter to evolving into a cold and ruthless warrior, Jodorowsky takes readers into a fascinating journey into pushing limits over self-sacrifices. The duel with father-mother establishes that point directly. Knowing that there is only one way to grasp the mantle, both know what to expect from their face-off. It sends No-Name into an emotionless void which becomes a frightening strength. Readers see this play out in the final act as No-Name fully becomes the Metabaron he envisions. Most of the other elements of this story play into the Incal formula of sci-fi, intense action and particular creativity. Readers are left with a definitive mark of why this character is a legend.

The art is where this issue shines above anything else. if you have never seen a Travis Charest book before, you are in for a treat. His style is so realistic and detailed, it raises any story to a new level. The visuals of the fight between No-Name Father-Mother and the Leodactyl establish a strong pace for where the story is heading. The fight between Father-Mother and No-Name will be another moment readers will be raving about as the sequences play out like a movie. The same goes for the initial quest for Praxis. “Stunning” feels like an undersell when it comes to his work. The only drawback is Charest only worked on pages 11-39, with this oversized edition featuring Charest’s sketchbook which is worth buying this issue alone!

It is explained in the book on the reasons for the art change which Janjetov fills in the rest of the book very well. Janjetov’s style plays into the final product of these trials for weaponry. The closing portion of the book leaves no doubt on where the evolution of No-name has formed into.

With issue #4 now upon us, how does Jessa survive long enough to process the reveals of last issue?

Jessa thought nothing more of the Harrower as a myth in her small town of Barlowe, New York. Ignoring the haunting warnings of a teacher, Jessa and her friends went out for a party not knowing what lied ahead. The avenger of Barlowe had already struck with the brutal murder of the sheriff before turning its’ attention towards the party.

Once it arrives at the party, the body count starts rising. If not for the attempts to stop it by Carter Creed, the sheriff’s son, Jessa might have been the next victim. With the house burning around them, the remaining survivors make their way into the basement, which has many tunnels to every house in Barlowe. That is not the only reveal as Jessa’s boyfriend Reed has been leading the Harrower on its’ quest to “make Barlowe Pure”. With Carter and Reed fighting, Jessa makes a break for an exit to escape the Harrower. She finds a doorway into a gala where her parents and much of the residents of Barlowe are attending.

HARROWER #4 - On Sale May 24th, 2023

The final starts with Jessa processing what she just walked into. She is being thanked by the parents of those murdered for keeping their kids “pure and innocent”. Jessa is in pure shock of what is going on, but miraculously Carter is still standing and explains what is transpiring. Readers will witness the true secret of evil as the origin of the Harrower is revealed. It plays into the dark and disturbing nature of the small little town’s façade. That admission is only followed up by the true identity of the Harrower, which Jessa and readers will be reeling from. With all the cards on the table, it’s a nearly dead Carter and Jessa versus the unstoppable avenger of Barlowe.

From that confrontation, the fallout sets up one last confrontation that casts an eerie but bittersweet feel on an already frightening read. The closing moments end thing as all good horror stories with one last secret before resting this story until the Harrower should strike again…

HARROWER #4 - On Sale May 24th, 2023

BREAKDOWN: There is no shortages of shocks and awes that Jordan brings with this ending. Like any great horror story, it is always centered around good vs. evil. Jessa’s character becomes a reluctant hero during this (with a huge assist from Carter). The confrontation with her parents is chilling and plays into the fright factor of the tale. The introduction piece of the parents “thanking her” set the tone for the issue.

Beneath the surface, there are far more issues with this town than meets the eye. Jordan covers them up until unveiling all the answers to the questions. The final confrontation plays out as perfect as it should. It mixes in heart-break with one side winning but at what cost? The ending is one that will catch some readers off-guard but like any great horror story, an ending never means it’s truly over.

Revel captures the shocking moments to raise up the fear and anxiousness of this ending chapter. The cult-iesque tone of the residents of Barlowe hightens the danger Jessa walked into. The depiction of the Harrower’s origin is chilling as it progresses the connection with the town. The final sequence of events pop off the page as the emotional toll it is taking on Jessa is undeniable. The last confrontation will easily hit with readers as they watch the ultimate last stand play out.

The closing moments play into the horror genre excellently as the story winds down. The closing panels will excite fans while also make no mistake about how this story is ending.

Since it’s debut, Harrower by Jordan and Revel has brought the classic elements of the horror slasher genre to life within these pages in a series that continues to win fans over. SUPERMASSIVE (2023) - IMAGE COMICS

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

In January of 2022, an event debuted spiraling out of the pages of the hit Image Comics series (via Black market Narrative): Radiant Black by Kyle Higgins and Marcelo Costa. The event welcomed comic readers to new heroes such as Rogue Sun, Inferno Girl Red and The Dead Lucky (via cameo). From that book, an exciting universe was born that has energized fans with its creativity and characters. The event was SuperMassive. The universe was The MassiveVerse!

The fallout from the book kicked off solo series for both Rogue Sun (by Ryan Parrott & Abel) and the Dead Lucky (by Melissa Flores and French Carlomagno). Inferno Girl Red by Mat Groom and Erica D’urso made its’ transition from Kickstarter to Image in January of 2023. With the success of those series alone, fans have been clamoring for the heroes to reunite in another crossover. Their wishes have been granted with another Massiveverse event hitting the local comic shops on May 24th, 2023!

For anyone needing a quick refresher on each character and what they do: Here’s MassiveVerse 101

The story begins Enfield, England in 1412, A battle is taking place between the Rogue Sun of that era and a mysterious figure known as Thomasin. In Rogue Sun’s possession is an obelisk that he is going to great lengths to keep. It is in a losing effort as Rogue Sun is defeated by Thomasin. She takes the obelisk and uses it to open a portal, leading to an unknown location. As she walks thru, she leaves the obelisk behind.

Fast forwarding to present time, Rogue Sun is sneaking into a museum in New York looking for the obelisk which has a personal connection to Caleb Hawthorne. With the object in hand, Rogue Sun flies to Lockport, Illinois to recruit Radiant Black on his latest mission. Readers see an awkward moment with Marshall, Nathan, Caleb and Dylan “meeting” for the first time. All the while, the actions of Rogue Sun have garnered the attention of Morrow and its’ latest security addition: Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka The Dead Lucky.

What is so special about this obelisk? Readers quickly find out it is the key to opening the door to the Holy Grail! With the power that could come from finding it, it is no wonder why all parties have varied vested interest in acquiring it. “With Great power comes great responislbilty” takes a whole new meaning as this story progresses. Once all parties finally meet in Enfield, the heroes open the door into an adventure they (and readers) won’t soon forget.

Readers will be glued to the pages seeing how these individuals survive the challenges in their way of acquiring the grail. The action is box-office as they progress thru on their quest. There is no shortage of drama with all the personalities involved. They make for some of the best moments in this issue when the clashes arise. However, no one is ready for the surprises mixed in for the latter portion of the book. The closing act will catch readers off-guard, but the payoff is sure to please. If that wasn’t enough, just wait for the final pages. I can’t stress this enough, when you hear “Massive-Verse Event” that means AN EVENT! Readers get a total picture that all ties together for a satisfying conclusion and why when all these heroes come together, readers can only describe it as “Super Massive”!

BREAKDOWN: The Massiveverse writing team plays to the strengths of their characters to make for a very enjoyable read. Marshall’s comedic timing is spot-on in breaking up the more dramatic moments. Bibiana also sneaks in a well timed “Indiana Jones” line that works perfectly as well. The story itself is an intriguing one as each hero is tested on how far would they go to get everything. The emotional toll the mission takes is easy to connect with as there are deep personal roots behind each motivation. The action scenes are well paced, giving the characters enough time to properly interact in-between, making for the best scenes. Not everything goes smoothly and that makes for added tension. It comes off very organic and not just “another super-hero team-up”. Each character gets an ample amount of panel time to move their own stories along with the main plot. The final act has great surprises that raises a few questions along the way, but that’s for another time. No spoilers on those moments, but rest assured, the readers will be excited to see them transpire. The fallout ends things with complete closure before sending everyone onto their next paths. The epilogue is something special that fans won’t be expecting but this goes into how creative the teams are behind this event. Get ready!

Di Nicuolo and Baiamonte add such energy to the pages of this event. The action panels waste no time in setting a frenetic pace. There are a few 2 full page panels that are absolutely incredible with one being a game-changer later in the issue. The art team also presents Thomasin as a compelling character through the various panels. Her story comes across as one of redemption moreso than sheer searching for power. The interactions she has with Bibiana come across as if they both share some common themes between them and why they are invested in the Grail. The comedic expressions Marshall shows in more serious moments work with giving the readers a solid break before diving back into the drama enfolding. The closing moments ramp up the action before slowly bringing everyone down to say goodbye for now. Excellent epilogue to close out the event with an image that will have readers talking without question.

BOOK OF EVIL #3 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we are returning to one of the best imprints in comics today: Best Jackett Press, home of the Scott Snyder led imprint. With a roster of books such as We Have Demons (w/art from Greg Capullo). Clear (w/ Francis Manupal), Night Of The Ghoul (w/ Francesco Francavilla), Barnstormers (w/ Tula Lotay), Canary (w/ Dan Panosian) and Dudley Datson & the Forever Machine (w/ Jamal Igle), fans have been treated to amazing story after amazing story. The issues have debuted digitally via Comixology Originals, following after in print form via Dark Horse Comics. The latest addition to the line-up debuted in October of 2022 and made an immediate impact on readers. Now at the pen-ultimate issue, the dangers have ramped up on the young adventure and his quest to find hope in a hopeless world.

In the 1960’s, the majority of children experience significant and disturbing changes when they hit their teenage years (range: 14-16 yrs old). The behavior being displayed can only be summed up as psychopathic. There is no way to describe way, just the insanity spread like wildfire across the entire population, with only roughly 8% dodging the change. The 8% were reclassified as “animals” of less than human. One such “animal” is a 12 yr old boy named Homer.

Along with his brother Poe, Homer and his friends Blake, Milton and Elliot try surviving the world gone mad. When Poe goes missing and rumors of him turning start growing, Homer sets out to discover the truth.

A clue is found in Poe’s room: E. C. Happ (the author of a cartoon known as “The Book Of Evil”) clippings which Homer thinks is the hidden location of Happ. With a belief that finding Happ will solve this nightmare, Homer and his friends set out to find Happ. During their journey, the young adventures can’t elude danger as they cross “shepards” until a bigger threat saves them for himself: a newly turned “Human” Poe!

This issue starts with Homer giving more background on the conditions he and his “family” have lived in. Readers can visualize the sheer hell the young boy grew up in with his brother doing all he can to keep him safe. It led into the importance of staying who they were and how hope represented the home they wanted. This ties into the importance of the color Yellow as that was the color of the door in the Yolk.

From here, the mood shifts to the frantic escape from Poe and the humans. The group is on a make-shift raft heading down a river, trying to stop Milton from bleeding to death (he lost his hand last issue). During the journey, Milton drops a food bag with gold-wrapped chocolate. Homer instantly jumps in to recover the food but is separated from his group. Once he swims to shore, another unknown group appears and makes an immediate impact on his journey.

What is this new group about? Homer meets with their leader and begins to process where things are now. Without his brother and his friends, what future does he have? Readers find out what this new group is about while sitting helplessly as a surprise blow is dealt to Homer that can only be classified as heart-breaking. The closing moments solidify why Homer’s convictions never waiver as the endgame appears to be approaching quickly.

BREAKDOWN: The unwavering belief of Homer that things can change grows stronger heading into the final issue. Snyder composes Homer as a tragic character who presses forward no matter what transpires. This first comes to light when he dives into the water for the snack bag. It is a small footnote but Homer belief in what “normal” represents to him that he’s willing to risk everything to keep it. The meeting with the new group brings up a new dynamic for readers to process. Is everything they present real or is this nothing more than a ruse? However the biggest moment of the book is a small conversation where when reading the dialogue, readers can actually feel the hope drain out of Homer. The final moments bring events full circle as the question of what will break first becomes evident: Homer’s hope or Homer’s reality.

In case you are new to the series, the art structure is very non-traditional to other comics. Emma Price deserves a great deal of praise for its’ presentation. However, when Jock adds anything to the pages, it elevates every page. The perfect example is Homer reliving the image of Poe with his knife. The haunting visual adds greatly to the dire feeling. The introduction of the group’s leader makes a big statement with seeing how their path could be Homer’s. The use of colors still play a huge part to this story. The symbolism of yellow jumps out as the story heads into the final act. It is an interesting mix of colors in the heart-breaking conversation that may play into something bigger in the finale.

The Odyssey of Homer and his friends takes an unexpected turn, questioning all he has known within Book Of Evil #3. Snyder, Jock and Price construct a superb issue with moments and visuals filled with small glimpses of hope in a declining and maddening world. This series is an excellent read and one you shouldn’t miss out on for New Comic Book Day.

For this entry, we’re checking out the conclusion of a fantastic series on from one of the most impressive imprints on the Comixology Originals Line. When fans hear the name “Scott Snyder”, one of the genres most associated with his writing is horror. The term “All Ages story” hasn’t typically been associated with his work but man, can he ever write an amazing one! Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine by Snyder, with Jamal Igle, Juan Castro, Chris Sotomayor and Tom Napolitano has been such a fun read and a highlight of the second wave of books with the partnership between Best Jackett Press and Comixology (Digital)/Dark Horse (Print Version).

Now heading into the conclusion, it is literally anyone’s guess where this series ends its run at. Let’s not delay any longer and deep dive into issue #5, shall we?

Dudley Datson is a young inventor whose life takes a dramatic turn when he stumbles into a plot involving the Prometheans trying to acquire a powerful invention from his mentor, Dr. Shae. When Shae is killed, Datson now becomes involved in her battle to stop them and the mysterious Perdix from achieving their evil plans. Datson does have some help in the form of a talking dog who is anything but average. Daedalus is a member of the legendary Athenian Family, and is a creator of an invention known as the Forever Machine, a maze-like conductor of energy. During their latest escape from Perdix, the pair wind up in the Forever Machine, which has been taken over by Perdix and distorted to his means. Datson leads an impossible escape from the maze and when the pair arrive back on Earth, it is revealed Perdix is not who he says he is. Perdix is actually Icarus, Daedalus’ son!

This issue picks up with the theme of “Dreaming Big”. there is a montage (much like the previous issues) of inventors and breaking down their trains of thought. Things shift back to the reality of Icarus addressing the people of Earth, “offering” them the honor of powering the maze. Daedalus’s confidence is broken as realizing he is responsible for all this. Datson calms his nerves and in a role reversal, Datson assumes the role as mentor, motivating Daedalus to continue to fight. They defeat an incoming Promethean scout ship and commandeer it to find Datson’s father and best friend, Ohno.

From here, readers see the emergence of Datson ascending into the role he has always been meant for. His plan is risky and near impossible, but as the theme of this issue goes, Datson is dreaming Big! Will his plan really work? The closing act picks up the pace bringing the long-awaited showdown to the center stage. The ending may surprise but if there’s anything certain about this series, it’s except the unexpected.

BREAKDOWN: Snyder pulls out all the stops for an outstanding conclusion. The story of Dudley Datson has been all about finding himself. Since the initial first appearance, Datson has evolved from naïve and awkward teenager to an established and confident inventor. The themes for each issue have tipped off the blueprint for his journey. Datson excels at the role reversal. Snyder pulling the switch helped elevate Daedalus with his character. The big plan of attack works because it harkens back to what gives Datson his strength: the love of his family. Seeing the confidence shine in him during the finale act was a natural extension of the growth. The closing act brought everything nicely full circle with leaving the readers on a positive note for what may lie ahead for the young inventor.

Igle and Castro set up the closing issue with some impressive visuals. Capturing the breaking of Daedalus was portrayed perfectly with reading his eyes when he felt the guilt sink in. The emotional reactions to events with Datson and his dad will connect with readers greatly as well. Seeing Datson beaming in front of him with such conviction during this crisis are panels that can’t be missed. The final standoff brings the action heading into the closing visuals which brings this incredible story to an end the only way it can: dreaming big.

HOUSE OF SLAUGHTER #15 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to a brand-new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of the third arc of the spin-off series based from the award winning series from Boom! Studios: “Something Is Killing The Children.” Since its’ debut, House Of Slaughter has provided fantastic reads in short arcs involving characters based in the Order of St. George universe. The latest tale featured a character who made waves in the inaugural start of the series: “The Butcher” Jace Boucher. Now featured in his own solo story, things have drastically changed since we last saw the Butcher. His current life as guardian over some orphans has been impacted by ghosts from his past returning. When one he’s watching over goes missing, Jace’s worst nightmares appear to becoming real.

House of Slaughter #15 by Tate Brombal, Antonio Fuso, Miguel Muerto and Andworld Design (Series Development: James Tynion and Deisgns and Development: Werther Dell’edera) brings a finale to the current story run.

Before we get started, some of the imagery might be too intense for younger readers. Reading discression is advised. That said, Let’s see how the fate of the Butcher plays out, shall we?

Before this story began, readers witnessed the tragic love story involving Jace and Aaron Slaughter. In its’ wake, Jace has become protector to a group of orphans waiting for Aaron to come back to him. Unfortunately, that day will not come as Aaron was killed after returning to the Order to protect Jace. Without this knowledge, Jace is trying to start life post St. George and adjusting to losing a hand. During this time, a young orphan named Sunny has taken upon himself to try and follow in Jace’s footsteps.

His endeavors brought him into contact with someone who Jace never thought he would see again: Jolie Boucher. Jolie has welcomed Sunny into the lifestyle and her family with open arms. Once Jace becomes aware of who is influencing Sunny, he makes a desperate attempt to save the boy from the fate he knows comes with this lifestyle. This leads to a confrontation between Jace and Jolie, who have some unsettled business from when they last saw each other. The conversation starts friendly but true motives are shown as Jolie winds up capturing Jace, settling some payback for “leaving her” to die in a fire many years prior. All the while, Sunny faced his first monster to become a member of Jolie’s hunting family, losing his eye in the process.

This issue opens up with a flashback to where Jace first found Sunny. Readers remember this school bus as it was the setting shown at the beginning of this arc. Readers have nothing held back as the emotional impact is felt from the scene. It leads to present day where Jace is tied up in a meat locker. Vionette and Cassius Boucher are watching over and taunting Jace. It is during this moment that Jace finds out news that the readers have been dreading he would. It is upon this revelation that Jace has a vision that proves to be the park for something else entirely. Jolie’s actions have woken up …. The Butcher.

Will Jace save Sunny in time? And what of the other orphans who make an attempt to help? Readers get this answers along with seeing first hand what Jace is capable of. It leads to a final confrontation that no one is expecting things to play out as they do. It is a fitting end to a story that has pushed its’ protagonists to their threshold before they can’t hold back who they truly are.

BREAKDOWN: Brombal sends the Butcher out with a very solid conclusion. The entire arc has been about redefining who he is post-hunting. Jace’s life seems to be at peace until Sunny tries taking his “hero worship” too far. Brombal sets up Jace to be a complex character, wrestling with the demons of his past. The back-story with Jolie fits perfectly as someone who mirrors what Sunny is doing now in their young age. The showdown doesn’t falter as readers see first hand what Jace can do when fully unleashed. Seeing the face-of with Jolie plays right into the boiling point of this story. Once it commences, it delivers on what fans are expecting…until the conclusion. Brombal shifts gears and throws in some twists that some may not be ready for. It caps off what readers should expect from this universe and know it brings the drama and tension every time.

Fuso and Muerto paint a vivid picture of how dangerous Jace can be. Seeing him angry and unhinged is an intense visual for the reader. These panels do not shy away from what he can do and leaves readers knowing exactly why he has the nickname that he does. They set it up nicely with Jace taking cover in a tree, ready to strike at a given notice. The art really elevates the final stand-off between Jace and Jolie to another level. Readers can sense the feeling involved with this confrontation. Fuso and Muerto also present the shocking moments near the final act with well-timed reactions to the events transpiring. It all ties together with the final visuals bringing a close to this chapter and having fans discuss what happens now with what they have just witnessed.

The conclusion of “The Butcher’s return” is a complete send-off for Jace Boucher and his life post Aaron Slaughter. The Rita Repulsa fans might remember from the TV show is no more. Out of her shadow has emerged a dangerous foe that the Rangers haven’t been able to stop yet. Her name is Mistress Vile. In a short amount of time, Vile has defeated Lord Zedd, captured and possessed Matt, the green Ranger, and now is in the final stages of achieving her plan of achieving ultimate power.

The only thing standing in her way is a morphin-powered Lord Zedd looking for revenge. Vile sends her enforcer to deal with him. During the fight, it is revealed that the mysterious figure is none other than ZORDON?!

The story opens up on the planet Bizerk. Vile and Alpha-1 are standing in front of a frozen figure…Zordon. It is revealed to readers that Vile has placed his consciousness in a time wrap, splitting it from the body! Vile frees him from the ice and without a conscious, Vile uses her powers to persuade him to her cause.

The story speeds to present time and “The Vessal” hits the scene, making a mindless walk thru the chaos around him from Vile’s forces attacking Angel Grove to head right to the Command Center. Making his way to Zordon’s chamber, the Vessal confronts Rocky, Adam, Alpha and Zordon! The action picks up as The Vessal disposes of the Rangers attack with relative ease. At this stage, he makes the connection with Zordon’s essence!

Readers see the two meet in an unlikely place with a meeting of two minds…literally. Both Zordons have their cases and stances, no one looking to budge. The conversation shifts to the Vessal’s ultimate goals which readers see where Zordon stands in response. The fallout is one that will leave readers guessing as the ripple effect can be felt on the final page.

BREAKDOWN: Flores brings an “angel vs. devil” approach to the conversation with the Vessel and Zordon within these pages. The pacing for the story allowed for a small moment with other characters but drove home the importance of these to meeting. Once they finally meet and connect, readers get taken on a sound trip thru the various emotions and memories both have. Seeing how both attack the other with key points kept this moment engaging as the high-stakes game they were playing rolled onward. Diving into the motivations for the Vessel fleshed out some questions readers will have and also positioned its’ future in an unforeseen direction. The conclusion of the issue leaves much to ponder as a key factor in this conflict seems to be ready to leave its’ mark.

Renna steps in for art duties and anytime he’s on a book, you know the art will deliver. The steady, methodical walk to the command center early in the issue links up to readers about how focused the Vessel’s mission was. The 2 page spread when they finally meet will be a visual to stand out as that moment sets the tone for the majority of the issue. The conversation comes across as direct and intense as one would expect. Seeing the reactions both have to the other’s verbal jabs highlights those panels right to its conclusion. Excellent final image to keep readers guessing at what’s next to unfold.

ARCADE KINGS #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re taking a look at a brand new series from Image Comics that you don’t want to pass up on for New Comic Book Day! With the new Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom being the talk of pop culture fans this week, it is very ironic (and simultaneously poetic) that the world of video games plays a part into this saga shrouded in mystery. Arcade Kings #1 by DYLAN BURNETT (Cosmic Ghost Rider), Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini welcomes readers to Infinity City and an enigmatic figure starting his own heroic quest. Let’s not delay and “press start” to this review already. Ready for the first level?

The story begins in Infinity City. A prize fight is happening in front of a capacity crowd. In one corner, a fighter named “Ziegler”. In the other is world champion Victor McMax! The action is flying in the ring, but looking from the outside are two young boys with very different personalities. One is Joe, who wants to follow in the champ’s footsteps. The other is his younger brother Ken, who seems disinterested in the action in the ring. Once the final bell hits, McMax retains his title via KO.

The story jumps a short time later and McMax announces his retirement under mysterious circumstances.

From here, readers are taken to Valleytown, a suburb of Infinity City. At the Round House Arcade, there is a commotion as someone was just defeated on a game. Sitting at the game is a figure wearing a unique helmet asking for who’s next. The figure is Joe. When a new competitor steps up, readers are taken on a flashback to three weeks prior where Rikio, the nephew of the arcade owner was assaulted by some punks. He’s saved by Joe, who fends them off. An offer is made following that Rikio can’t say no to: Joe stays at the arcade “to lay low” and in return, he will replace the broken joystick Rikio had and be the protector of the arcade. In three weeks, the deal seems to be paying off for both.

That is until a stranger named Molly walks in to challenge Joe. This is no ordinary player as Molly walks in with her own robot. Molly also says something that triggers a flashback to Joe’s past. What gets said to force an impulsive action? How does Joe fare to this unlikely challenge? Readers sit ringside as Joe has his biggest challenge to date. The fallout sets the tale into a new direction with a final act that keeps readers guessing what will happen next as the story levels up.

BREAKDOWN: Burnett is on double duty for this series and its easy to see he’s crafting something special within these pages. From the opening bell, the pace sets a high rhythm, giving readers just enough information about the young boys before jumping ahead to where Joe’s journey takes shape. His initial start is cryptic as not much is tipped off concerning why he’s trying to stay out of the spotlight. This changes dramatically when Molly hits the scene and peels back a layer of his past. The moment is brief but makes a big impact in the story. Joe’s drive for his cause is memorable as he thrusts himself into fighting when needed while running under the radar of his past. The closing moments are bittersweet as things shift gears but like every great mystery, not everything is revealed at the first chance. The closing moments bring up speculation of what has transpired over the years, btu this is nothing but win for the reader.

The artwork is high energy. The coloring of Baiamonte and Antonellini (along with Simona Iurato and Sharon Marino) makes the sights of Infinity City pop off the panels. It reflects the exhilarating pace of the fighting mixed with the overall story. This is illustrated perfectly with the 2 page spread in the beginning of the issue. Readers will feel the excitement in the crowd with the action in the match. This carries through each fight and it delivers without fault. Burnett’s art plays into the emotional rush of the action. There are great non-action sequences to with a final “walk-off” into the sunset balanced out with a strong closing visual to take readers into the next chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

Arcade Kings #1 hits a nice 1-2 combo of action and drama that the readers won’t need to worry about the judges scoring. Burnett and his team drop an emotionally charged tale clouded in secrets and combat with solid writing and dynamic art that doesn’t need a cheat code. Make sure you level up your collection on NCBD with this issue.

NO/ONE #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast.

For this entry, we’re following the clues surrounding the biggest mystery in comics: WHO IS NO ONE? The Image Comics series via Black Market Narrative has been an absolute smash hit with readers as both #1 and #2 have gone into 2nd and 3rd printings. The way that this series has branched outside traditional comics promotion is incredible with its companion podcast and viral shorts. “No/One” feels more like an event rather than a series. Note, this is only after two issues of the series. To cause that strong of a reaction after only two issues is a testament to the amazing work being done with this series.

NO/ONE #3 by Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, Geraldo Borges, Mark Englert & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou dives back into the story after last issue’s shocking ending. All bets are off where the fallout goes from here, but let’s not wait any longer. Shall we resume the mystery of “Who Is No One”?

NO/ONE #3 by Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, Geraldo Borges, Mark Englert & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou for Image Comics via Black Market Narrative

Louis Capel. Michael Kern. Coach Nathan Cade. All dead with a possible common thread connecting them. That common denominator is the mysterious vigilante known as “No/One”. However, it is more complicated that it seems. “Richard Roe” aka “the accountability Killer” or No/One is publicly known as Aaron Kern. Kern has been in Allegheny County Jail after being caught and confessing to being the killer. So if he’s behind bars, who is the copycat attacking under the mask? This is on top of Assistant chief Ben Kern (Aaron’s father) being attacked and saved by No/One?!

No/One also has caught the eyes of Pittsburgh Ledger Editor Teddy Barlow and reporter Julia Paige who are covering the case via podcast. Detectives Singh and Harper are on the case, trying to make sense of it all. The City of Pittsburgh is on edge. Senator Noah Kemp (who survived a No/One attack) arrives and makes a public plea to bring swift legal change to protect the people from No/One. Tate looks to Kern for support and is answered with a public resignation instead.

This issue opens Police Sergeant Vince Harmon sitting with Ben Kern setting up an exit interview to tie up loose ends. This is interrupted by Lieutenant McGarrity, who barges in with questions of his own for Kern. The conversation is heated as the frustration of the case is boiling over. Once cooler heads prevail, the case file is given to Kern for one last attempt to find a clue to solve the case.

Meanwhile, Julia and Teddy are discussing Aaron Kern’s timeline when she receives a call from her mother, FOC News host Alanna Page, who is going on-air to talk about the case. When declined, Alanna’s attention shifts to another case. That case involves a man by the name of Kenneth Chbosky. Shortly after the show, Chbosky reaches out to Julia for an interview due to her No/One coverage.

How does things fare with another profile case? How does this fit in with the No/One case? Readers witness what transpires and what dangers follow. With the spotlight burning hotter on all the major players, the case shifts into new directions. With so many vested parties searching for answers, there is no shortage of enjoyment for readers to have with this series.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Buccellato focuses heavy on the tension the No/One case is having on the citizens of Pittsburgh. Right from the opening segment, they set the tone of anger and bitterness directed at Ben Kern. It’s countered with his own tormented feelings with how his family is attached to the case. The story with Julia this issue presents an interesting dynamic with her mother that has only begun to scratch the surface. It is overshadowed by the events involving her and Chbosky, which the writing team shows how dangerous her line of work can be. The fallout changes some preconceived notions surrounding her investigation and raises more questions heading further into the mystery. Even with the focus being on Julia for the majority of this issue, the main supporting characters get enough panel time to advance their parts. The conclusion brings one character full circle as anyone involved with this case simply just can’t walk away from it.

First off, how fantastic is the main cover by Borges and Mark Englert! It’s subtle but makes a statement. Heading into the issue, the emotional outbursts pour out of the panels when it involves Ben Kern and Lieutenant McGarrity, Readers can easily connect the pent-up frustration that explodes when Kern tries answering the questioning. Julia and Chbosky’s portion of the story comes off brooding and tense, which pairs perfectly with the blunt writing of Chbosky’s character, The fallout is swift and impactful as no panel goes wasted in redefining Julia’s opinions concerning the story she is diving into. There’s a great near fill page panel that readers can fully see the change unfolding surrounding Julia’s case. Panel structure is also giving this series a more powerful feel to how No/One’s actions have grabbed the city’s attention. There’s a certain energy that this book brings that gets amplified by the amazing art.

Shifting the focus away from the main case to highlight a smaller one is a risky gamble, but Higgins, Buccellato, Borges, and the team tie it all together with compelling writing and phenomenal art. The mystery has only just begun but there is a reason why this series gets all the praise it does: It’s simply THAT Good! Don’t miss this series and the companion podcast when it drops!

Black Cloaks (Kiros Law Enforcement) Phaedra Essex and Pax have been assigned to solve the murder case involving Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the royal family of Kiros. Like any high-profile case, the pressure is on the law-enforcement team to find answers. This case hits close to Essex because at one point, she was connected to Freyall. Readers saw their past play out last issue connecting the emotional impact this case is having on Essex. With the city on the verge of a public meltdown, time is running out on the pair to provide closure. Other factors have come into play such as the Kiros Three (the most powerful humans on Kiros), who have a vested interest in how things play off. Even after last issue’s revelation that Freyall’s death appears to have been a suicide, there still is more to uncover with this case. Their latest lead puts them on a path to meet an unexpected figure: PHINNEAS II OF THANE, Essex’s father!

This issue opens up with the Black Cloaks sitting inside the home of Phinneas. The tension is palpable was Essex is none too happy to see her dad. In contrast, Phinneas is disregarding Essex’s warning of how the Kiros Three are appearing to pin the crime on him. Essex lays out her theory that the queen is involved in Freyal’s death but it falls on deaf ears. Phinneas laughes at what is proposed and throws something back right in Essex’s face to counter. When the cloaks are ready to leave, Phinneas offers a name that might be of more service.

In the meantime, Essex is showed major revelations by her brother Devaki that further widens the gap between her and her estranged father. There’s little time to process what’s happening as Phinneas’ name turns out to be someone neither Essex or Pax want to see. The tension ramps up for readers as more clues are given that lead to more options being brought to the forefront. What will Essex do with this new information? A course of direction is set that puts the Black Cloaks closer to the truth but at what cost? Can Essex and Pax find a way to the truth? What do they find when journeying on this new plan of attack? More questions are formed as the pair (and readers) stumble onto a vision within the final panel that adds more fuel to an already mysterious fire.

BREAKDOWN: Thompson keeps taking readers deeper into the drama with this latest chapter. The family dynamic between Essex and Phinneas stood out as it showed Essex in a new light. The strain on her relationship played out making Essex face a wide variety of emotions. There is a scene involving a painting that readers can instantly see Essex demonstrate this point. The build-up to Phinneas’s person of interest comes off big due to his non-chalant ways when getting questioned. It is at that moment, the story shifts into high gear, sending the pair into a risky situation, Pacing moves things right along while allowing the characters to shine when the spotlight is on them. The latter half of the book doesn’t slow down as Essex and Pax make a move that could be the break they so desperately need. The closing moments throw more questions into their case and that’s never a bad thing for the reader.

McClaren and Carey keep the panels more grounded than in recent issues to drive home the emotional pull on Essex and her father. The reactions to her father’s answers added more weight to her own dealing with the case. The scene involving the painting is another example of how visually creative this series is with every issue. The world of Kiros pops off every panel. The painting plays into showing a different side of Essex that readers will get a more complete idea of what she is feeling in dealing with this very personal case. The actions following Phinneas’s “help” swing the story into a more shadowing feel which pays off on the final moments. The final full page panel closes up events, leaving much to process as the case deepens going into its’ next phase.

The crime drama of Kiros takes a small detour to address Essex’s family relationships before ramping back up into what has become an unescapable series. Thompson, McClaren and Carey continue to expose the wildly imaginative world of the Black Cloaks with superb writing and art. The series generates the high praise its’ getting for a reason. SOMETHING EPIC #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out a brand new series from Image Comics that is generating a huge buzz heading into New Comic Book Day. Something Epic #1 from SZYMON KUDRAŃSKI (Spawn, Punisher) has a very unique concept behind it with some fantastic visuals to match. Readers will be challenged with “Is Perception really Reality’? What is so special about fourteen-year-old Danny Dillon? Let’s take a closer look at what all the hype is about, shall we?

Something Epic #1 from SZYMON KUDRAŃSKI

The issue opens up with a woman giving birth to a young boy she names Danny Dillon. Danny is inter-monologuing about imagination is the first thing created prior to when we are born. The story speeds up to when he is a young boy. As Danny is walking in a wooded area, he looks to the sky. Flying about him is a superhero that echoes the outline of a very familiar hero. Danny gives a great insight on the concept of imagination, perceiving it as a “gift”. Danny goes to a doctor’s office to be checked out but he is diagnosed as “normal.” The doctor claimed Dany has an “overactive imagination” due to his elevated nervous system. No matter how it is defined, Danny is a special child with a “gift”. His drawings weren’t fake, they were his depictions of real life.

Another day, Danny and his mom are having a conversation about his schooling amongst other topics. During the talk, something grabs her keys. When looking around, Danny’s mom is confused on where they are. Danny senses where they might be as he looks through a mouse hole to find them. The story shifts as Danny moves through the house to the basement. On this trip, he comes across two figures that he knows all too well: an animated cat named Drill and a vampire named Marcus. Danny brushes by them and even at one point (via flashback), shows them to his mother who can’t see them. Only Danny can see the characters

This leads to Danny further breaking down his world. He can see things few others can. In his words, Energy that is Imagination is transformed into something else. Readers are walked thru a guide of Danny’s life as the things he have seen can not be comprehended as real. As he progresses forward, the worlds start blending a bit more as the figures are appearing more and more in the “real world”. This comes to a dramatic halt has the final act brings Danny’s life back to a grounded place with a ominous feel taking readers into the next chapter with a looming shadow lurking on the young boy’s future.

BREAKDOWN: KUDRAŃSKI provides a unique tale that poses many questions of what is real vs. what is imagination. Danny’s tale starts out as any young child’s would. Believing in “make believe” characters isn’t that outlandish. However, the theme of Perception vs. Reality never leaves readers minds. Danny is well educated in this area as the writing portrays him in touch with the aspects of his reality. For being so young, Danny never appears scared or rattled at what he comes across. It is a “new normal” that he has become comfortable living in. The closing of the issue brings up some theories of what is unfolding that will challenge Danny’s world. Readers will have much to decipher heading to the next chapter.

The art is stunning throughout. The use of 12 panel pages jumps out right from the start, right down to the placement of credits mixed in within said pages. The full page panels exemplify big moments when they appear. Nothing feels overused or forced to amp up a segment. Danny’s definition of his world via 2-page full panels is what fans will resonate with the most. It is a clear picture of what Danny sees and adds more to the argument of is his perception really reality. Danny’s reactions are different than hat readers might be expecting to see. There is never a sense that there is danger or fear when these characters pop up. Danny is portrayed as completely comfortable in this world. The only time there is a sense of doubt is the final pages, which challenges readers on what they see vs. what they think they know.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The world of Danny Dillon is an eye-popping experience that will question what readers see vs. what they think. KUDRAŃSKI brings this to page with stellar artwork balanced out with a story growing by each page. The concept has only begun to step into focus, making this a book you want to keep an eye out for at the Local Comic Shops.
