Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we are returning to one of the best imprints in comics today: Best Jackett Press, home of the Scott Snyder led imprint. With a roster of books such as We Have Demons (w/art from Greg Capullo). Clear (w/ Francis Manupal), Night Of The Ghoul (w/ Francesco Francavilla), Barnstormers (w/ Tula Lotay), Canary (w/ Dan Panosian) and Dudley Datson & the Forever Machine (w/ Jamal Igle), fans have been treated to amazing story after amazing story. The issues have debuted digitally via Comixology Originals, following after in print form via Dark Horse Comics. The latest addition to the line-up debuted in October of 2022 and made an immediate impact on readers. Now at the pen-ultimate issue, the dangers have ramped up on the young adventure and his quest to find hope in a hopeless world.

BOOK OF EVIL #3 by Scott Snyder, Jock and Emma Price picks right up after last issue’s shocking conclusion with another intense read. Stay between the “yolk lines" as we take a closer look at the latest in Homer’s odyssey. Let’s get started, shall we?

In the 1960’s, the majority of children experience significant and disturbing changes when they hit their teenage years (range: 14-16 yrs old). The behavior being displayed can only be summed up as psychopathic. There is no way to describe way, just the insanity spread like wildfire across the entire population, with only roughly 8% dodging the change. The 8% were reclassified as “animals” of less than human. One such “animal” is a 12 yr old boy named Homer.

Along with his brother Poe, Homer and his friends Blake, Milton and Elliot try surviving the world gone mad. When Poe goes missing and rumors of him turning start growing, Homer sets out to discover the truth.

A clue is found in Poe’s room: E. C. Happ (the author of a cartoon known as “The Book Of Evil”) clippings which Homer thinks is the hidden location of Happ. With a belief that finding Happ will solve this nightmare, Homer and his friends set out to find Happ. During their journey, the young adventures can’t elude danger as they cross “shepards” until a bigger threat saves them for himself: a newly turned “Human” Poe!

This issue starts with Homer giving more background on the conditions he and his “family” have lived in. Readers can visualize the sheer hell the young boy grew up in with his brother doing all he can to keep him safe. It led into the importance of staying who they were and how hope represented the home they wanted. This ties into the importance of the color Yellow as that was the color of the door in the Yolk.

From here, the mood shifts to the frantic escape from Poe and the humans. The group is on a make-shift raft heading down a river, trying to stop Milton from bleeding to death (he lost his hand last issue). During the journey, Milton drops a food bag with gold-wrapped chocolate. Homer instantly jumps in to recover the food but is separated from his group. Once he swims to shore, another unknown group appears and makes an immediate impact on his journey.

What is this new group about? Homer meets with their leader and begins to process where things are now. Without his brother and his friends, what future does he have? Readers find out what this new group is about while sitting helplessly as a surprise blow is dealt to Homer that can only be classified as heart-breaking. The closing moments solidify why Homer’s convictions never waiver as the endgame appears to be approaching quickly.

BREAKDOWN: The unwavering belief of Homer that things can change grows stronger heading into the final issue. Snyder composes Homer as a tragic character who presses forward no matter what transpires. This first comes to light when he dives into the water for the snack bag. It is a small footnote but Homer belief in what “normal” represents to him that he’s willing to risk everything to keep it. The meeting with the new group brings up a new dynamic for readers to process. Is everything they present real or is this nothing more than a ruse? However the biggest moment of the book is a small conversation where when reading the dialogue, readers can actually feel the hope drain out of Homer. The final moments bring events full circle as the question of what will break first becomes evident: Homer’s hope or Homer’s reality.

In case you are new to the series, the art structure is very non-traditional to other comics. Emma Price deserves a great deal of praise for its’ presentation. However, when Jock adds anything to the pages, it elevates every page. The perfect example is Homer reliving the image of Poe with his knife. The haunting visual adds greatly to the dire feeling. The introduction of the group’s leader makes a big statement with seeing how their path could be Homer’s. The use of colors still play a huge part to this story. The symbolism of yellow jumps out as the story heads into the final act. It is an interesting mix of colors in the heart-breaking conversation that may play into something bigger in the finale.

FINAL POINT: 9.7 OUT OF 10

The Odyssey of Homer and his friends takes an unexpected turn, questioning all he has known within Book Of Evil #3. Snyder, Jock and Price construct a superb issue with moments and visuals filled with small glimpses of hope in a declining and maddening world. This series is an excellent read and one you shouldn’t miss out on for New Comic Book Day.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast.

For this entry, we’re checking out the conclusion of a fantastic series on from one of the most impressive imprints on the Comixology Originals Line. When fans hear the name “Scott Snyder”, one of the genres most associated with his writing is horror. The term “All Ages story” hasn’t typically been associated with his work but man, can he ever write an amazing one! Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine by Snyder, with Jamal Igle, Juan Castro, Chris Sotomayor and Tom Napolitano has been such a fun read and a highlight of the second wave of books with the partnership between Best Jackett Press and Comixology (Digital)/Dark Horse (Print Version).

Now heading into the conclusion, it is literally anyone’s guess where this series ends its run at. Let’s not delay any longer and deep dive into issue #5, shall we?

Dudley Datson is a young inventor whose life takes a dramatic turn when he stumbles into a plot involving the Prometheans trying to acquire a powerful invention from his mentor, Dr. Shae. When Shae is killed, Datson now becomes involved in her battle to stop them and the mysterious Perdix from achieving their evil plans. Datson does have some help in the form of a talking dog who is anything but average. Daedalus is a member of the legendary Athenian Family, and is a creator of an invention known as the Forever Machine, a maze-like conductor of energy. During their latest escape from Perdix, the pair wind up in the Forever Machine, which has been taken over by Perdix and distorted to his means. Datson leads an impossible escape from the maze and when the pair arrive back on Earth, it is revealed Perdix is not who he says he is. Perdix is actually Icarus, Daedalus’ son!

This issue picks up with the theme of “Dreaming Big”. there is a montage (much like the previous issues) of inventors and breaking down their trains of thought. Things shift back to the reality of Icarus addressing the people of Earth, “offering” them the honor of powering the maze. Daedalus’s confidence is broken as realizing he is responsible for all this. Datson calms his nerves and in a role reversal, Datson assumes the role as mentor, motivating Daedalus to continue to fight. They defeat an incoming Promethean scout ship and commandeer it to find Datson’s father and best friend, Ohno.

From here, readers see the emergence of Datson ascending into the role he has always been meant for. His plan is risky and near impossible, but as the theme of this issue goes, Datson is dreaming Big! Will his plan really work? The closing act picks up the pace bringing the long-awaited showdown to the center stage. The ending may surprise but if there’s anything certain about this series, it’s except the unexpected.

BREAKDOWN: Snyder pulls out all the stops for an outstanding conclusion. The story of Dudley Datson has been all about finding himself. Since the initial first appearance, Datson has evolved from naïve and awkward teenager to an established and confident inventor. The themes for each issue have tipped off the blueprint for his journey. Datson excels at the role reversal. Snyder pulling the switch helped elevate Daedalus with his character. The big plan of attack works because it harkens back to what gives Datson his strength: the love of his family. Seeing the confidence shine in him during the finale act was a natural extension of the growth. The closing act brought everything nicely full circle with leaving the readers on a positive note for what may lie ahead for the young inventor.

Igle and Castro set up the closing issue with some impressive visuals. Capturing the breaking of Daedalus was portrayed perfectly with reading his eyes when he felt the guilt sink in. The emotional reactions to events with Datson and his dad will connect with readers greatly as well. Seeing Datson beaming in front of him with such conviction during this crisis are panels that can’t be missed. The final standoff brings the action heading into the closing visuals which brings this incredible story to an end the only way it can: dreaming big.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Snyder, Igle and the team welcome comic readers into the fantastic world of Dudley Datson. The series captures the imagination and constructs the magnification of the unlikely hero into the role he was born to be in. The combination of excellent writing and incredible visuals makes this dream idea into a must-have reality issue. Don’t miss this comic on New Comic Book Day.

Welcome to a brand-new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of the third arc of the spin-off series based from the award winning series from Boom! Studios: “Something Is Killing The Children.” Since its’ debut, House Of Slaughter has provided fantastic reads in short arcs involving characters based in the Order of St. George universe. The latest tale featured a character who made waves in the inaugural start of the series: “The Butcher” Jace Boucher. Now featured in his own solo story, things have drastically changed since we last saw the Butcher. His current life as guardian over some orphans has been impacted by ghosts from his past returning. When one he’s watching over goes missing, Jace’s worst nightmares appear to becoming real.

House of Slaughter #15 by Tate Brombal, Antonio Fuso, Miguel Muerto and Andworld Design (Series Development: James Tynion and Deisgns and Development: Werther Dell’edera) brings a finale to the current story run.

Before we get started, some of the imagery might be too intense for younger readers. Reading discression is advised. That said, Let’s see how the fate of the Butcher plays out, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Before this story began, readers witnessed the tragic love story involving Jace and Aaron Slaughter. In its’ wake, Jace has become protector to a group of orphans waiting for Aaron to come back to him. Unfortunately, that day will not come as Aaron was killed after returning to the Order to protect Jace. Without this knowledge, Jace is trying to start life post St. George and adjusting to losing a hand. During this time, a young orphan named Sunny has taken upon himself to try and follow in Jace’s footsteps.

His endeavors brought him into contact with someone who Jace never thought he would see again: Jolie Boucher. Jolie has welcomed Sunny into the lifestyle and her family with open arms. Once Jace becomes aware of who is influencing Sunny, he makes a desperate attempt to save the boy from the fate he knows comes with this lifestyle. This leads to a confrontation between Jace and Jolie, who have some unsettled business from when they last saw each other. The conversation starts friendly but true motives are shown as Jolie winds up capturing Jace, settling some payback for “leaving her” to die in a fire many years prior. All the while, Sunny faced his first monster to become a member of Jolie’s hunting family, losing his eye in the process.

This issue opens up with a flashback to where Jace first found Sunny. Readers remember this school bus as it was the setting shown at the beginning of this arc. Readers have nothing held back as the emotional impact is felt from the scene. It leads to present day where Jace is tied up in a meat locker. Vionette and Cassius Boucher are watching over and taunting Jace. It is during this moment that Jace finds out news that the readers have been dreading he would. It is upon this revelation that Jace has a vision that proves to be the park for something else entirely. Jolie’s actions have woken up …. The Butcher.

Will Jace save Sunny in time? And what of the other orphans who make an attempt to help? Readers get this answers along with seeing first hand what Jace is capable of. It leads to a final confrontation that no one is expecting things to play out as they do. It is a fitting end to a story that has pushed its’ protagonists to their threshold before they can’t hold back who they truly are.

BREAKDOWN: Brombal sends the Butcher out with a very solid conclusion. The entire arc has been about redefining who he is post-hunting. Jace’s life seems to be at peace until Sunny tries taking his “hero worship” too far. Brombal sets up Jace to be a complex character, wrestling with the demons of his past. The back-story with Jolie fits perfectly as someone who mirrors what Sunny is doing now in their young age. The showdown doesn’t falter as readers see first hand what Jace can do when fully unleashed. Seeing the face-of with Jolie plays right into the boiling point of this story. Once it commences, it delivers on what fans are expecting…until the conclusion. Brombal shifts gears and throws in some twists that some may not be ready for. It caps off what readers should expect from this universe and know it brings the drama and tension every time.

Fuso and Muerto paint a vivid picture of how dangerous Jace can be. Seeing him angry and unhinged is an intense visual for the reader. These panels do not shy away from what he can do and leaves readers knowing exactly why he has the nickname that he does. They set it up nicely with Jace taking cover in a tree, ready to strike at a given notice. The art really elevates the final stand-off between Jace and Jolie to another level. Readers can sense the feeling involved with this confrontation. Fuso and Muerto also present the shocking moments near the final act with well-timed reactions to the events transpiring. It all ties together with the final visuals bringing a close to this chapter and having fans discuss what happens now with what they have just witnessed.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The conclusion of “The Butcher’s return” is a complete send-off for Jace Boucher and his life post Aaron Slaughter. Brombal, Fuso, Muerto and the team create a finale filled with solid writing and strong art that leave no question to the readers about why Jace has the nickname of “The Butcher.” You’ll want to keep an eye out for this issue and series at the local comic book shop this week.

For this entry, How Morphenomenal has the current Power Rangers story arc by Melissa Flores and Simona Di Gianfelice been! Taking over the flagship title at BOOM! STUDIOS with issue #101, the creative team has lit a fire under the fandom with its’ excellent re-introduction of a fan-favorite villain while challenging the heroes of Angel Grove like never before. Considering how things left off last issue, readers have been waiting on their edge of their seats for this latest issue to drop! Luckily, the wait is over and a special guest star is filling in on art duties that fans will be excited to see swing thru!

The Rita Repulsa fans might remember from the TV show is no more. Out of her shadow has emerged a dangerous foe that the Rangers haven’t been able to stop yet. Her name is Mistress Vile. In a short amount of time, Vile has defeated Lord Zedd, captured and possessed Matt, the green Ranger, and now is in the final stages of achieving her plan of achieving ultimate power.

The only thing standing in her way is a morphin-powered Lord Zedd looking for revenge. Vile sends her enforcer to deal with him. During the fight, it is revealed that the mysterious figure is none other than ZORDON?!

The story opens up on the planet Bizerk. Vile and Alpha-1 are standing in front of a frozen figure…Zordon. It is revealed to readers that Vile has placed his consciousness in a time wrap, splitting it from the body! Vile frees him from the ice and without a conscious, Vile uses her powers to persuade him to her cause.

The story speeds to present time and “The Vessal” hits the scene, making a mindless walk thru the chaos around him from Vile’s forces attacking Angel Grove to head right to the Command Center. Making his way to Zordon’s chamber, the Vessal confronts Rocky, Adam, Alpha and Zordon! The action picks up as The Vessal disposes of the Rangers attack with relative ease. At this stage, he makes the connection with Zordon’s essence!

Readers see the two meet in an unlikely place with a meeting of two minds…literally. Both Zordons have their cases and stances, no one looking to budge. The conversation shifts to the Vessal’s ultimate goals which readers see where Zordon stands in response. The fallout is one that will leave readers guessing as the ripple effect can be felt on the final page.

BREAKDOWN: Flores brings an “angel vs. devil” approach to the conversation with the Vessel and Zordon within these pages. The pacing for the story allowed for a small moment with other characters but drove home the importance of these to meeting. Once they finally meet and connect, readers get taken on a sound trip thru the various emotions and memories both have. Seeing how both attack the other with key points kept this moment engaging as the high-stakes game they were playing rolled onward. Diving into the motivations for the Vessel fleshed out some questions readers will have and also positioned its’ future in an unforeseen direction. The conclusion of the issue leaves much to ponder as a key factor in this conflict seems to be ready to leave its’ mark.

Renna steps in for art duties and anytime he’s on a book, you know the art will deliver. The steady, methodical walk to the command center early in the issue links up to readers about how focused the Vessel’s mission was. The 2 page spread when they finally meet will be a visual to stand out as that moment sets the tone for the majority of the issue. The conversation comes across as direct and intense as one would expect. Seeing the reactions both have to the other’s verbal jabs highlights those panels right to its conclusion. Excellent final image to keep readers guessing at what’s next to unfold.

FINAL POINT: 8.8 OF OF 10

The mystery behind the Vessel’s uncanny mission is brought front and center during the havoc of Mistress Vile’s attack. Flores, Renna and the team throw the spotlight on this character and its counterpart with strong writing and exceptional artwork that will have fans reeling from the meeting of the two minds. You definitely don’t want to miss this issue on NCBD!

For this entry, we’re taking a look at a brand new series from Image Comics that you don’t want to pass up on for New Comic Book Day! With the new Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom being the talk of pop culture fans this week, it is very ironic (and simultaneously poetic) that the world of video games plays a part into this saga shrouded in mystery. Arcade Kings #1 by DYLAN BURNETT (Cosmic Ghost Rider), Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini welcomes readers to Infinity City and an enigmatic figure starting his own heroic quest. Let’s not delay and “press start” to this review already. Ready for the first level?

The story begins in Infinity City. A prize fight is happening in front of a capacity crowd. In one corner, a fighter named “Ziegler”. In the other is world champion Victor McMax! The action is flying in the ring, but looking from the outside are two young boys with very different personalities. One is Joe, who wants to follow in the champ’s footsteps. The other is his younger brother Ken, who seems disinterested in the action in the ring. Once the final bell hits, McMax retains his title via KO.

The story jumps a short time later and McMax announces his retirement under mysterious circumstances.

From here, readers are taken to Valleytown, a suburb of Infinity City. At the Round House Arcade, there is a commotion as someone was just defeated on a game. Sitting at the game is a figure wearing a unique helmet asking for who’s next. The figure is Joe. When a new competitor steps up, readers are taken on a flashback to three weeks prior where Rikio, the nephew of the arcade owner was assaulted by some punks. He’s saved by Joe, who fends them off. An offer is made following that Rikio can’t say no to: Joe stays at the arcade “to lay low” and in return, he will replace the broken joystick Rikio had and be the protector of the arcade. In three weeks, the deal seems to be paying off for both.

That is until a stranger named Molly walks in to challenge Joe. This is no ordinary player as Molly walks in with her own robot. Molly also says something that triggers a flashback to Joe’s past. What gets said to force an impulsive action? How does Joe fare to this unlikely challenge? Readers sit ringside as Joe has his biggest challenge to date. The fallout sets the tale into a new direction with a final act that keeps readers guessing what will happen next as the story levels up.

BREAKDOWN: Burnett is on double duty for this series and its easy to see he’s crafting something special within these pages. From the opening bell, the pace sets a high rhythm, giving readers just enough information about the young boys before jumping ahead to where Joe’s journey takes shape. His initial start is cryptic as not much is tipped off concerning why he’s trying to stay out of the spotlight. This changes dramatically when Molly hits the scene and peels back a layer of his past. The moment is brief but makes a big impact in the story. Joe’s drive for his cause is memorable as he thrusts himself into fighting when needed while running under the radar of his past. The closing moments are bittersweet as things shift gears but like every great mystery, not everything is revealed at the first chance. The closing moments bring up speculation of what has transpired over the years, btu this is nothing but win for the reader.

The artwork is high energy. The coloring of Baiamonte and Antonellini (along with Simona Iurato and Sharon Marino) makes the sights of Infinity City pop off the panels. It reflects the exhilarating pace of the fighting mixed with the overall story. This is illustrated perfectly with the 2 page spread in the beginning of the issue. Readers will feel the excitement in the crowd with the action in the match. This carries through each fight and it delivers without fault. Burnett’s art plays into the emotional rush of the action. There are great non-action sequences to with a final “walk-off” into the sunset balanced out with a strong closing visual to take readers into the next chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

Arcade Kings #1 hits a nice 1-2 combo of action and drama that the readers won’t need to worry about the judges scoring. Burnett and his team drop an emotionally charged tale clouded in secrets and combat with solid writing and dynamic art that doesn’t need a cheat code. Make sure you level up your collection on NCBD with this issue.

For this entry, we’re following the clues surrounding the biggest mystery in comics: WHO IS NO ONE? The Image Comics series via Black Market Narrative has been an absolute smash hit with readers as both #1 and #2 have gone into 2nd and 3rd printings. The way that this series has branched outside traditional comics promotion is incredible with its companion podcast and viral shorts. “No/One” feels more like an event rather than a series. Note, this is only after two issues of the series. To cause that strong of a reaction after only two issues is a testament to the amazing work being done with this series.

NO/ONE #3 by Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, Geraldo Borges, Mark Englert & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou dives back into the story after last issue’s shocking ending. All bets are off where the fallout goes from here, but let’s not wait any longer. Shall we resume the mystery of “Who Is No One”?

Louis Capel. Michael Kern. Coach Nathan Cade. All dead with a possible common thread connecting them. That common denominator is the mysterious vigilante known as “No/One”. However, it is more complicated that it seems. “Richard Roe” aka “the accountability Killer” or No/One is publicly known as Aaron Kern. Kern has been in Allegheny County Jail after being caught and confessing to being the killer. So if he’s behind bars, who is the copycat attacking under the mask? This is on top of Assistant chief Ben Kern (Aaron’s father) being attacked and saved by No/One?!

No/One also has caught the eyes of Pittsburgh Ledger Editor Teddy Barlow and reporter Julia Paige who are covering the case via podcast. Detectives Singh and Harper are on the case, trying to make sense of it all. The City of Pittsburgh is on edge. Senator Noah Kemp (who survived a No/One attack) arrives and makes a public plea to bring swift legal change to protect the people from No/One. Tate looks to Kern for support and is answered with a public resignation instead.

This issue opens Police Sergeant Vince Harmon sitting with Ben Kern setting up an exit interview to tie up loose ends. This is interrupted by Lieutenant McGarrity, who barges in with questions of his own for Kern. The conversation is heated as the frustration of the case is boiling over. Once cooler heads prevail, the case file is given to Kern for one last attempt to find a clue to solve the case.

Meanwhile, Julia and Teddy are discussing Aaron Kern’s timeline when she receives a call from her mother, FOC News host Alanna Page, who is going on-air to talk about the case. When declined, Alanna’s attention shifts to another case. That case involves a man by the name of Kenneth Chbosky. Shortly after the show, Chbosky reaches out to Julia for an interview due to her No/One coverage.

How does things fare with another profile case? How does this fit in with the No/One case? Readers witness what transpires and what dangers follow. With the spotlight burning hotter on all the major players, the case shifts into new directions. With so many vested parties searching for answers, there is no shortage of enjoyment for readers to have with this series.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Buccellato focuses heavy on the tension the No/One case is having on the citizens of Pittsburgh. Right from the opening segment, they set the tone of anger and bitterness directed at Ben Kern. It’s countered with his own tormented feelings with how his family is attached to the case. The story with Julia this issue presents an interesting dynamic with her mother that has only begun to scratch the surface. It is overshadowed by the events involving her and Chbosky, which the writing team shows how dangerous her line of work can be. The fallout changes some preconceived notions surrounding her investigation and raises more questions heading further into the mystery. Even with the focus being on Julia for the majority of this issue, the main supporting characters get enough panel time to advance their parts. The conclusion brings one character full circle as anyone involved with this case simply just can’t walk away from it.

First off, how fantastic is the main cover by Borges and Mark Englert! It’s subtle but makes a statement. Heading into the issue, the emotional outbursts pour out of the panels when it involves Ben Kern and Lieutenant McGarrity, Readers can easily connect the pent-up frustration that explodes when Kern tries answering the questioning. Julia and Chbosky’s portion of the story comes off brooding and tense, which pairs perfectly with the blunt writing of Chbosky’s character, The fallout is swift and impactful as no panel goes wasted in redefining Julia’s opinions concerning the story she is diving into. There’s a great near fill page panel that readers can fully see the change unfolding surrounding Julia’s case. Panel structure is also giving this series a more powerful feel to how No/One’s actions have grabbed the city’s attention. There’s a certain energy that this book brings that gets amplified by the amazing art.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The Massive-Verse’s biggest mystery heads into uncharted territory with its’ latest entry. Shifting the focus away from the main case to highlight a smaller one is a risky gamble, but Higgins, Buccellato, Borges, and the team tie it all together with compelling writing and phenomenal art. The mystery has only just begun but there is a reason why this series gets all the praise it does: It’s simply THAT Good! Don’t miss this series and the companion podcast when it drops!

Black Cloaks (Kiros Law Enforcement) Phaedra Essex and Pax have been assigned to solve the murder case involving Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the royal family of Kiros. Like any high-profile case, the pressure is on the law-enforcement team to find answers. This case hits close to Essex because at one point, she was connected to Freyall. Readers saw their past play out last issue connecting the emotional impact this case is having on Essex. With the city on the verge of a public meltdown, time is running out on the pair to provide closure. Other factors have come into play such as the Kiros Three (the most powerful humans on Kiros), who have a vested interest in how things play off. Even after last issue’s revelation that Freyall’s death appears to have been a suicide, there still is more to uncover with this case. Their latest lead puts them on a path to meet an unexpected figure: PHINNEAS II OF THANE, Essex’s father!

This issue opens up with the Black Cloaks sitting inside the home of Phinneas. The tension is palpable was Essex is none too happy to see her dad. In contrast, Phinneas is disregarding Essex’s warning of how the Kiros Three are appearing to pin the crime on him. Essex lays out her theory that the queen is involved in Freyal’s death but it falls on deaf ears. Phinneas laughes at what is proposed and throws something back right in Essex’s face to counter. When the cloaks are ready to leave, Phinneas offers a name that might be of more service.

In the meantime, Essex is showed major revelations by her brother Devaki that further widens the gap between her and her estranged father. There’s little time to process what’s happening as Phinneas’ name turns out to be someone neither Essex or Pax want to see. The tension ramps up for readers as more clues are given that lead to more options being brought to the forefront. What will Essex do with this new information? A course of direction is set that puts the Black Cloaks closer to the truth but at what cost? Can Essex and Pax find a way to the truth? What do they find when journeying on this new plan of attack? More questions are formed as the pair (and readers) stumble onto a vision within the final panel that adds more fuel to an already mysterious fire.

BREAKDOWN: Thompson keeps taking readers deeper into the drama with this latest chapter. The family dynamic between Essex and Phinneas stood out as it showed Essex in a new light. The strain on her relationship played out making Essex face a wide variety of emotions. There is a scene involving a painting that readers can instantly see Essex demonstrate this point. The build-up to Phinneas’s person of interest comes off big due to his non-chalant ways when getting questioned. It is at that moment, the story shifts into high gear, sending the pair into a risky situation, Pacing moves things right along while allowing the characters to shine when the spotlight is on them. The latter half of the book doesn’t slow down as Essex and Pax make a move that could be the break they so desperately need. The closing moments throw more questions into their case and that’s never a bad thing for the reader.

McClaren and Carey keep the panels more grounded than in recent issues to drive home the emotional pull on Essex and her father. The reactions to her father’s answers added more weight to her own dealing with the case. The scene involving the painting is another example of how visually creative this series is with every issue. The world of Kiros pops off every panel. The painting plays into showing a different side of Essex that readers will get a more complete idea of what she is feeling in dealing with this very personal case. The actions following Phinneas’s “help” swing the story into a more shadowing feel which pays off on the final moments. The final full page panel closes up events, leaving much to process as the case deepens going into its’ next phase.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The crime drama of Kiros takes a small detour to address Essex’s family relationships before ramping back up into what has become an unescapable series. Thompson, McClaren and Carey continue to expose the wildly imaginative world of the Black Cloaks with superb writing and art. The series generates the high praise its’ getting for a reason. Don’t miss this issue on New Comic Book Day.

For this entry, we are checking out a brand new series from Image Comics that is generating a huge buzz heading into New Comic Book Day. Something Epic #1 from SZYMON KUDRAŃSKI (Spawn, Punisher) has a very unique concept behind it with some fantastic visuals to match. Readers will be challenged with “Is Perception really Reality’? What is so special about fourteen-year-old Danny Dillon? Let’s take a closer look at what all the hype is about, shall we?

The issue opens up with a woman giving birth to a young boy she names Danny Dillon. Danny is inter-monologuing about imagination is the first thing created prior to when we are born. The story speeds up to when he is a young boy. As Danny is walking in a wooded area, he looks to the sky. Flying about him is a superhero that echoes the outline of a very familiar hero. Danny gives a great insight on the concept of imagination, perceiving it as a “gift”. Danny goes to a doctor’s office to be checked out but he is diagnosed as “normal.” The doctor claimed Dany has an “overactive imagination” due to his elevated nervous system. No matter how it is defined, Danny is a special child with a “gift”. His drawings weren’t fake, they were his depictions of real life.

Another day, Danny and his mom are having a conversation about his schooling amongst other topics. During the talk, something grabs her keys. When looking around, Danny’s mom is confused on where they are. Danny senses where they might be as he looks through a mouse hole to find them. The story shifts as Danny moves through the house to the basement. On this trip, he comes across two figures that he knows all too well: an animated cat named Drill and a vampire named Marcus. Danny brushes by them and even at one point (via flashback), shows them to his mother who can’t see them. Only Danny can see the characters

This leads to Danny further breaking down his world. He can see things few others can. In his words, Energy that is Imagination is transformed into something else. Readers are walked thru a guide of Danny’s life as the things he have seen can not be comprehended as real. As he progresses forward, the worlds start blending a bit more as the figures are appearing more and more in the “real world”. This comes to a dramatic halt has the final act brings Danny’s life back to a grounded place with a ominous feel taking readers into the next chapter with a looming shadow lurking on the young boy’s future.

BREAKDOWN: KUDRAŃSKI provides a unique tale that poses many questions of what is real vs. what is imagination. Danny’s tale starts out as any young child’s would. Believing in “make believe” characters isn’t that outlandish. However, the theme of Perception vs. Reality never leaves readers minds. Danny is well educated in this area as the writing portrays him in touch with the aspects of his reality. For being so young, Danny never appears scared or rattled at what he comes across. It is a “new normal” that he has become comfortable living in. The closing of the issue brings up some theories of what is unfolding that will challenge Danny’s world. Readers will have much to decipher heading to the next chapter.

The art is stunning throughout. The use of 12 panel pages jumps out right from the start, right down to the placement of credits mixed in within said pages. The full page panels exemplify big moments when they appear. Nothing feels overused or forced to amp up a segment. Danny’s definition of his world via 2-page full panels is what fans will resonate with the most. It is a clear picture of what Danny sees and adds more to the argument of is his perception really reality. Danny’s reactions are different than hat readers might be expecting to see. There is never a sense that there is danger or fear when these characters pop up. Danny is portrayed as completely comfortable in this world. The only time there is a sense of doubt is the final pages, which challenges readers on what they see vs. what they think they know.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The world of Danny Dillon is an eye-popping experience that will question what readers see vs. what they think. KUDRAŃSKI brings this to page with stellar artwork balanced out with a story growing by each page. The concept has only begun to step into focus, making this a book you want to keep an eye out for at the Local Comic Shops.

For this entry, we are riding shotgun along the horror on the highway as Image Comics’ latest hit keeps rolling along! PHANTOM ROAD #3 by Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands furthers the mystery behind the supernatural sci-fi road Dom and Birdie now travel on. Let’s take a deeper dive on the latest chapter, shall we?

Fate has taken a truck driver named Dom and a crash survivor named Birdie & made them an unlikely duo connected to a mysterious object. This object appears to have crossed them into a mirrored dimension with faceless figures trying to acquire what they possess. Last issue sent the pair to a truck stop with a mysterious figure being very cryptic about what the truth is. The truck stop itself seemed suspicious as well, with the pair leaving and appearing to be back to their rightful time. However, things have changed with the pair being in pain when separated form the object and a killed faceless being turning into a human form. Now law enforcement are closing in to investigate, Dom and Birdie are searching for answers and dodging the law.

This issue opens up with FBI agent Theresa Weaver arriving on the scene. She immediately takes over the case from the local officers, who appear to be in way over their heads. Weaver takes some pictures of the scene and breaks down the victim’s remains. Leaving the scene, Weaver is in contact with her supervisor going over notes. Readers clearly see that the FBI knows more about what is going on than they’re letting on. At her hotel room, she is visited by Deputy Dunn, who informs her of the initial accident involving Birdie.

Once at the scene, Weaver starts adding things up. Readers start getting more pieces of the puzzle revealed as Weaver furthers her investigation. The final act shows Weaver’s connection to the case might not be as cut and dry as is let on. That said, no one is expecting what unfolds in the closing moments. The mystery surrounding the object has just begun.

BREAKDOWN: Lemire takes the lead characters out for this issue and devotes the time to establishing Agent Weaver to the audience. Weaver comes across as a no-nonsense agent but as things move on, Lemire sets up the slow reveal attaching her to what is going on with Dom and Birdie. The overall story had some clues revealed but still has fans guessing at what the true nature of things are. Pacing was fine as the “day in the life” model for Weaver worked to connect her to the readers. The closing sequence was a solid surprise and throws more mystery onto an already growing tale.

Walta and Bellaire keep the gritty and dark feel of the story going even without Dom or Birdie involved. The mannerisms of Agent Weaver play into her familiarity with the case at hand without tipping off too much. The interactions with the locals establish this quickly carrying through to the panels with Deputy Dunn. The closing sequence gave this issue a kick of excitement with a strong simple panel to put a closing on the transpiring events.

FINAL POINT: 7.5 OUT OF 10

Lemire, Walta and the team put the spotlight on a character adding a new element to an already combustible situation. Solid storytelling and artwork keep things rolling as the highway to horror shifts gears into a new lane for readers to follow.

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new series by BOOM! Studios that is sure to stand out at the local comic shops on New Comic Book Day. Ghostlore #1 from Cullen Bunn, Leomacs, Jason Wordie, Ed Dukeshire with guests Brian Hurtt and Bill Crabtree joins the ranks of BOOM!’s latest horror hits with an issue fans will be talking about. Let’s take a closer look and see what fans (and ghosts) will be talking about, shall we?

The series opens up with Pastor Lucas Agate preaching themes of faith to the small congregation. One quote that stands out is “believing does not require seeing”. After the service, Lucas is approached by his wife Emily. The conversation moves from mentioning the smaller audience each week for service to their children Harmony and Chris. They feel Harmony is going thru a phase being an older teenager while Chris seems cu off from everyone. When Harmony is caught smoking outside the wooden church, her mother brushes it off, in an attempt to connect with her.

The story shifts gears as the family leaves the church. Lucas says Harmony can drive (even though she doesn’t have her license). Harmony pushes back saying she doesn’t need a license since she’s leaving for New York in a few years. The conversation moves into an argument as Harmony’s manner becomes defensive as the parents try talking with her. Behind the wheel, Harmony continues the argument and swerves out of the way of someone in the road! The car smashes into a tree leaving Lucas’s legs pinned in the front seat. Harmony tries getting her barrings but is interuppted by her brother, who finally speaks up!

From here, readers see that the family isn’t alone at the crash site. They have been joined by some onlookers who not everyone can see. Chris begins to narrate the next phase of this story before heading to the final moments. What does he say during this that frightens Harmony and Lucas? Readers enter a world that will shake them to their core. The ending will leave them waiting with baited breath to see what unfolds next with shocking final panels.

BREAKDOWN: Bunn wastes no time establishing the horror aspects of this story. The beginning is a soft intro into the main players (thus far) but the issue takes off once the crash takes place. In an instant, the themes of terror and uncertainty are amplified. Harmony is a character that has much going on that hasn’t come to light yet. Even with this being only the first issue, she comes across very polarizing to the readers. This comes from the conclusion of the story, which was a big surprise in where things were initially heading. The segments with Chris plays such a pivotal part in connecting the major plot points. As previously mentioned, Bunn sets up a shocking ending to the first issue that is sure to have readers talking in-between chapters.

The art brings this supernatural world to life with some very impressive imagery. The haunting feel of the series never escapes the reader. Post-crash is the panels readers will be most impacted by. There is nothing held back about what happened involving that moment in the story. Seeing the book transition into the next phase has eye-catching visuals behind it.The forrest scene leaves no doubt about where things are heading. Hurtt and Crabtree throw a solid change of pace with their portion to counter the brooding art of Leomacs, giving the readers a definitive pause for flashbacks. The closing moments build towards an emotional impact for where things are heading following this opening issue.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Boom! Studios current run of Horror comics gets another winning addition added to the lineup. Bunn, Leomacs and the team bring frightening writing and haunting imagery to a debut issue that redefines what a “ghost story” is truly all about. Keep an eye out for this on New Comic Book Day.

For this entry, we are checking out a brand-new book from Humanoids re-introducing fans to a universe poised for a big future with a certain Hollywood director attached to adapt the project. In case you are new to this franchise, The Incal by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Jean “Moebius” Giraud made its’ debut in 1980 in the pages of Métal Hurlant. Since that time, the series has gone on to influence many creators throughout the years with itss’ ground-breaking visions and storytelling. Now, 43 years later, the property is still making a buzz as Taika Waititi (THOR: RAGNAROK, THOR: LOVE & THUNDER) is adapting the series as a full length major film!

With all the hype surrounding the movie, it’s a perfect time for another story to unfold from the Incalverse into new and well-versed reader’s possessions. The Incal: Dying Star by Dan Watters (The Seasons Have Teeth), Jon Davis-Hunt (Shadowman, Bloodshot: Unleashed), Troy Peteri, Jake Thomas, and Rob Levin unveil the latest installment of the franchise. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening here, shall we?

In case you are new to this franchise, The Incal is centered around John Difool. Difool is a lesser-known detective making his way through a nightmarish landscape when fate has other plans for him. He stumbles across an object that would change his life forever: The Incal. The journey following has been one that has had so many elements mixed in, the effect it has had on readers has never wavered after all this time.

In this latest chapter, the story is focused around Commander Kaimann, the head of the Dying Star. Kaimann is a mutated figure who has suffered great loss when we catch up to him. Kaimann has no homeworld or lover as both have been eliminated. The only thing left of his crew are ghost spirits. Kaimann is broken and dealing with a losing battle with his reptilian mutation.

As this chapter begins, readers see a mysterious figure reading a story to some young children. The story comes to life as the panels focus on Kaimann flying in space alone and broken. He activates a switch and his crew appears in ghost form. Kaimann explains he has a need for them: to assist in raiding a ship with some very wealthy people on board. During the raid, Kaimann gets into a confrontation with a passanger and kills them, along with blowing up the ship shortly after. As readers find out, this was no ordinary raid. This was an act of revenge.

The raid brings a reward: A syritonius Mourner (violin) which Kaimann has a belief of its capabilities. As he plays, the music brings him in contact with a person who will have major implications on his next move. Her name is Aurora. Why do this pair connect? Readers find out how their paths have intersected as Kaimann is given a newfound purpose but needs to address a past that is catching up to him quick.

The story mixes in many elements as Kaimann is desperately trying to hang on to hope while looming threats close in. There are some tragic turns mixed in that throws more obstacles in Kaimann’s way that compel the captain to be tested like never before. The best laid plans set forth start crumbling around him and the new reality he’s envisioning. Can he recover? The resolution is a bittersweet closing that will leave many possibilities for readers as Kaimann’s actions will leave a lasting memory for all long after the final page has turned.

BREAKDOWN: Watters makes Commander Kaimann a complex character with his portrayal. When readers first meet him, he comes across as a stereotypical pirate stealing from the rich. As the tale progresses, Watters gives him some valuable emotional layers to connect with the audience. Coming from his losses, Kaimann is grasping for anything to recreate his lost happiness. The connection with Aurora makes for some unique interactions that translates throughout the chapter, building to a strong conclusion. The pacing covers many directions while adding in no shortage of violent moments bluntly bringing the despair of the people of this universe to the forefront. The ending brings the story back to square one while opening some areas to take things further should that arise with another tale involving this section of the Incalverse.

Davis-Hunt spares no expense bringing the brutality of this world when the fighting happens. Considering his previous work on Shadowman and Bloodshot, readers know Davis-Hunt has no issue delivering on these moments. The initial raid of the wealthy is prime example of this. The swordplay is bold and bloody. There is no grey area of how dangerous Kaimann comes across to those on board. This element carries further when actions are taken against Aurora later in the book. Those moments are not for the squeamish. The sci-fi vision of the universe is laid out to readers delight. There are some characters that define the homage to the original series. The closing wraps things up with some strong panels and an excellent full page one displaying a huge reveal. There’s much to enjoy from the visuals.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The latest addition to Jodorowsky and Moebius makes its mark, presenting a tale that is sure to please longtime fans of this series while welcoming new ones to this universe. Watters, Davis-Hunt and the team paint a distinct vision of tragic loneliness with harsh reality as a commander tries finding hope in a bleak universe. This is one to keep an eye out for on New Comic Book Day.

RADIANT BLACK #24 by Kyle Higgins, Marcelo Costa, Igor Monti and Becca Carey sets the stage for Nathan Burnett and Marshall with the consequences of failure never set higher. Let’s see how the heroes fare on the final stop before “Supermassive 2”, shall we?

In his wildest dreams, Nathan Burnett could never have imagined when he returned home to Lockport, Illinois from Los Angeles how much his life would change. After coming into contact with a mysterious object, Nathan became the figure known as Radiant Black. Since that moment, his life has been a non-stop roller coaster with his best friend Marshall now intertwined in this superhero world. Both have done heroic actions, but their latest challenge may be too great to overcome.

Something is coming to Earth. Something they might not be able to stop. Factor in that their powers are not working properly and it’s a blueprint for disaster. With the future looking dire, a choice was made. Nathan and Marshall make a return to a place where both are familiar with. They return to Existence.

This issue kicks off with Nathan and Marshall crashing back into the realm of Existence. The pair is greeted by an old “frienemy” in <001>, who readers haven’t seen in quite some time. He assumes the role as guide into the vastly changed landscape. Existence as they knew it is no more. It is devasted and fragmented. <001> speaks of what is needed to try fixing things but it is not an easy road.

Nathan and Marshall must search for a key element that could be the missing piece to save Earth from impending doom. On this journey, Nathan and Marshall are challenged to confront their own self reflections to move forward. As the line goes… “There is only truth in Existence.” It really pushes the pair into uncharted water? Will they succeed? Readers find out very quickly that there is no easy way out for what Nathan and Marshall need to deal with. The later portion of the book hi readers direct with addressing a discord long suspected. This all leads to a resolution with a final parting image that has huge ramifications heading into the Catalyst War.

BREAKDOWN: Throughout the course of this series, Kyle Higgins has crafted challenges that have tested the bond of Nathan and Marshall on many levels. This issue harkens back to the theme and emotions of another classic issue in the series: Issue #10. Whenever Existence has been in play, it brings out something special within the story. The journey they embark on makes both characters face lingering plot points directly in front of the readers. Higgins depicts their friendship as their greatest strength and weakness at varying moments. There is a very strong portion of the story where this comes to light and gives the readers a sense at what each is going thru heading towards their fateful ending. Once at that stage, the closing portion presents a very direct ending which readers will have feelings about. It’s also noteworthy that the final image featured proves once again why what Kyle Higgins and company at BMN continue to push the creative bounds like no one else in the business.

Marcelo Costa and Igor Monti paint an eye-popping landscape throughout this issue. Existence feels worn down and barely hanging on. The opening two-page spread is absolutely phenomenal. It sets the pace for what lies ahead. As previously mentioned, there are some homages to Issue #10 that long-time readers will pick up on and see what compares and contrasts. Monti’s coloring adds such a new element to the already impressive visuals. The whole landscape feels different and energetic at the same time. There is a great deal of two-page spreads throughout the issue that gives the moments showcased that much more gravity to the story. The sequences leading into the final act demonstrate to the readers the anguish and eventual truth of the lingering plot points. It pays off big once the final image hits the page. A perfect closing full page panel to conclude this crucial timeframe of the MassiveVerse’s flagship book.

FINAL POINT: 10 out of 10

All roads lead to the next phase of the MassiveVerse’s flagship title with an incredible issue concluding this prelude arc. Higgins, Costa, Monti and Carey present two heroes outmatched for what lies ahead but refusing to surrender with superb writing and an amazing visual experience. There is a reason this line of books are comics’ most exciting line and led by Radiant Black. The buzz surrounding this series never fails to deliver and this issue will be one fans will be talking about this week on New Comic Book day. Highest possible recommendation.

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of the sequel story uniting two of the biggest teams in all of pop culture fandom. Since their last pairing back in 2019, fans have been waiting to see when these forces combine for another fantastic adventure. Their wait wasn’t too long as in December of 2022, Boom! Studios and IDW teamed up again for the next chapter. The series has been nothing but win with a creative team that has delivered on an unforgettable run, building towards an epic finale. *** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

Set only months after their initial meeting, the combined forces of Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles have been faced with the combined threat of Krang and Rita Repulsa. Shredder had been laying low after his defeat from the merged forces. Casey Jones (longtime TMNT ally) went searching for him and wound up getting captured, or so readers thought. Meanwhile the united bad guys took the fight directly to Angel Grove with a takeover of the command center with the clear intent of accessing the Morphin Grid.

All would have been lost if not for an unlikely "ally” in the battle: Shredder! “The enemy of my enemy is my (temporary) friend” has never been more true as an uneasy alliance was formed to stop Rita and Krang once and for all. Their reasons vary on why but neither side is complaining about the support. The fight has worked its’ way across Angel Grove and Dimension X with many twists and turns to keep both fan bases on the edge of their seats with each issue. With last issue’s ending, Krang looks to finish the fight once and for all, taking over the Megazord in his own twisted fashion.

This issue opens up with the TMNT team (infused with the powers of the Dimension X broken morphers) returning to the Command Center to face off with Rita. However, Rita is waiting for them with a powered up and brainwashed Casey Jones poised to fight. Meanwhile, the fight for Angel Grove is in full swing as the Power Rangers (mutated into animal hybrids) attempt to slow down the Mega-Krang giant. In their current state, they can’t summon their zords, but one person can. Shredder activates a morpher and summons the Green Ranger’s Dragonzord!!! The feared TMNT adversary in charge of one of the most powerful weapons is a worrisome site but the Rangers get some more back-up as Zordon and Alpha arrive in a TurtleZord ready for action!

From here on out, the issue shifts to all action. It may be cliché to say “Big Fight Feel”, but that is exactly what fans witness here. In one corner, it’s DragonZord and TurtleZord vs Mega Krang! In the other is the Turtles facing off against Rita and Casey! Both battles live up to expectations with a few well times moments mixed in. They hit their marks and the fallouts feel impactful. The resolution plays into both fandoms with excellent parting moments. One moment brings everything back full circle to a degree, reminding readers of how great crossovers like these are when done right. The final moments play into more MMPR/TMNT lore, leaving endless possibilities of what’s next should we see these teams together again.

BREAKDOWN: Parrott constructs a closing chapter that will have fans raving in the weeks following. Balancing two fandoms of such pop-culture appeal can be difficult. Parrott plays into the strengths of each team to bring out the best in their heroic actions. Making Shredder a “frienemy” to a degree was a highlight of this issue and series. Seeing him use the powers of the Green Ranger & using the Dragonzord was a great twist. The uneasy tension he creates added to the drama. The Rangers kept waiting for the shoe to drop and him to turn, but he never did. This all plays into the long game of his ultimate goals, but seeing him save the day stands out. The Sub-plotline with Casey Jones also is a highlight moment for this series. With juggling so many characters involved, putting the spotlight on his arc broke away the sole focus on both teams for a great feature. Meshing up elements of both fandoms played out perfectly as well. The reaction after the mutation powers fade by the Rangers is prime example of this. Readers get so many possibilities presented and implemented that you can’t help but be excited for potential future adventures involving these two teams, should the situation arise.

Bringing in the premier artist in comics for this project was a huge win from the start. Seeing Mora bring his infectious action sequences to life is a whole other level of amazing. The battles of Zords pulls no punches with an attention to detail unmatched. The Mega Krang reflection in the TurtleZord’s faceplate is a prime example of this. There is one near full page panel that fans will be ecstatic to see and how detailed it is will absolutely blown fans away. Not everything this issue involves action to make an imprint. The anguish in Casey Jones’ face in the concluding moments of his story is another area. Mora blends in the quiet moments and gives them equal value to the full blown intensity of the big action panels. Mora gives readers much to digest with the closing panels. They will no doubt have fans buzzing about if and when paths cross again for these franchises.

FINAL POINT: 9.7 OUT OF 10

Parrott and Mora merge the best of what makes these two fandoms special into a series that readers won’t be able to stop talking about. The finale brings the action with the incredible visuals provided by Mora and Raul Angulo, giving both teams a battle living up to its’ billing. Parrott’s writing is superb tying in the emotional aspects of the young heroes facing a combined front by dangerous villains on the verge of finally succeeding in their plans. The series never falters and nails the landing with what transpires within these pages. You simply cannot miss this incredible series & finale!

Van Nguyen is no ordinary person. Being born during a solar eclipse, Van has developed abilities. Van can see ghosts. They could see him and fed off his energy for many years in his young life. That was the stat quo until Van realized not only could he see ghosts, but he could have physical contact with them as well. No longer helpless to fight back, Van could punch away any attacking spirits. As he has grown older, the spirits have changed as well. Luckily, he has a mentor in Rick Walker, who is very familiar with Van’s situation to provide much needed guidance. However, with a nine year time job, Van might not be ready for his biggest threat yet: High School.

Last issue, Van walked into school and witnessed the biggest ghost he has ever encountered. Dodging that obstacle, Van walks the hallways and sees another spirit draining energy off the student body. How can this be? is the thought running thru Van’s head. Unfortunately, he has another challenge in front of him. The school’s vice principal confronts Van for his special sunglasses (which helps him deal with his abilities). Van has medical clearance but the vice isn’t believing him. Van winds up winning this round but also breaking down how the school is a feeding ground for ghosts. In one class in particular, a punk ghost sets their eyes on Van. They learn in a short amount of time that Van isn’t the student to try that with.

During that encounter, Van draws the attention of another ghost, who isn’t exactly happy with someone fighting ghosts back. While dodging that ghost, Van runs into someone who might be a game-changer in his life. Will he get the chance to see where this new-found friendship goes? Not if the ghosts have anything to say about it! Readers witness Van dodging dangers behind every hallway on top of maneuvering through high school. Can he manage? And what of Rick’s idea to handle some ghost business? Will the plan work? There is much to process as the story hits’ the midway mark before taking readers into the final arc.

BREAKDOWN: With the timejump in effect, Gunter has broadened Van’s challenges much to the readers delight. Seeing Van face the social awkwardness of high school is difficult enough, but being the only one to see the dangers lurking is a whole other factor. Gunter plays into Van’s naïve personality when he encounters a fellow student that provides a break from the ghost conflict. Their conversation comes off genuine and throws readers a different look for the lead character. The story doesn’t stray too far away from the overall themes from the previous issue. The dangers still affects Van’s supporting cast. Even though not featured heavily, they make the most of their panel time. It brings the attention back to Van’s never-ending battle. The final act demonstrates a huge turn in direction and looks to set the seeds for the overall conclusion.

Andan’s art is fluid and energetic as ever for this issue. The ghosts of “high School” have distinct looks to them and instantly stand out to the readers. However, this issue features more personal moments which Andan plays up for a solid break in the overall story. Seeing Van’s reaction to someone not caught up in his ghost world shines with capturing Van’s nervousness and gives the story some “normal” breaks before amping back up into the ghost battles. Speaking of which, the final act comes to life with Andan interjecting some strong emotional panels with Rick advising Van on his current situation and the plan he is compiling heading into next issue.

FINAL POINT: 8 out of 10

The latest issue of Grammaton Punch presents Van with his greatest challenge to date: High School. The book never ceases to keep readers guessing by taking this story into a personal break before speeding up into the drama. Gunter, Andan and the team present this chapter with solid storytelling and vibrant art, making it an issue you don’t want to miss on New Comic Book Day.

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out a brand new novel from Disney Publishing Worldwide and Marvel Press that fans of a few notable characters in the Spider-Man mythos are featured in. The timing couldn’t be more perfect with the new “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” gearing up to hit theatres on June 2nd with one of these characters is featured prominently in the animated film. ARAÑA AND SPIDER-MAN 2099: DARK TOMORROW by Alex Segura, who fans know from such great stories as The Black Ghost, Blood Oath, Poe Dameron: Free Fall, and the Anthony Award–winning Secret Identity just to name a few. Dark Tomorrow features Anya Corazon who fans know as Araña and Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099 on an adventure that stretches throughout the timestream.

Both of these characters have been around the Marvel COMICS Universe for a while now and have built up a very solid fan base. Araña made her debut in the pages of Amazing Fantasy #1 in 2004. From there, she has impacted a few Spider-Man events and even assumed the mantle of Spider-Girl for her own solo series. Miguel O’Hara led the charge in 1992 of welcoming comic fans to the 2099 universe as “Spider-Man 2099”. Since then, he has been a fixture in the comics scene by popping back in from time to time into the present day timeline. Pairing them together for the first time has fans waiting to see how they work together while facing more challenges than just the rogues of Spider-Man.

DARK TOMORROW is scheduled to drop on May 2nd. I was honored to receive an advance copy so here is my SPOILER FREE review of the unlikely pairing of two popular characters in the Spider-Verse.

ARANA AND SPIDER-MAN 2099: DARK TOMORROW by Alex Segura

The story kicks off with a great introduction into Araña as she handles a lesser-tier threat. Readers get a great introduction in how she deals with the threat. From here, Anya Corazon’s life and relationships come front and center all while trying to juggle life at Milton Summer High School located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Segura paints a vivid picture of how Anya is coping with school and seeing how others react to her other life in her role as a super hero. A great aspect of the story is her interactions with Gilberto, her caring father. He looks out for the best interest of his daughter but doesn’t know about her superhero life. This expands further when fate brings her into contact with a very special figure named Miguel Legar who opens her world to secrets that have a big impact on her life. It sends the story into a new phase as the focus dives in on the young hero growing in her role with guidance until tragedy strikes.

A major threat arrives on the scene (that Spider-Man fans should definitely know) and is amplifiesd even more when Anya must deal with losing someone who has become a mentor to her. Being unprepared for what’s coming is an overwhelming feeling of doubt that Segura challenges Anya with in the writing. It is an easy connection to readers who have witnessed Anya’s beginning as a hero. Can she find a win where she is adrift on what to do next. All the while, the looming presence of a dangerous Spider-Man foe is haunting Anya. The theme shifts to can Anya triumph over tragedy or is she now destined to fail?

Anya doesn’t have time to process as an event happens involving an object known as El Obelisco. The object becomes the catalyst for an even bigger mystery with Anya is in the middle. Where it leads is to a place she would never expect: Nueva York and home to someone that might be able to help Anya in her time of need: Miguel O’Hara!

Readers are given a great backstory on Miguel’s current state. Segura brings out many emotions from Miguel that bear some similarities with Anya. The experience factor doesn’t matter here. The challenge is what makes the hero move forward when they feel they can’t. Elements of the past follow Anya to this new era. It adds into the weight of the desperation of the heroes’ feelings, especially when a connection is made that shakes both heroes.

Heading into the final act, Segura brings all the major themes to a head. Anya and Miguel’s stories depicted here has been grounded with the themes of life after loss respectively. It brings out the best in both as they rediscover what it means to be a hero. There is also a great surprise presence that fans will be excited to see added to the mix. The conflict resolution plays out perfectly to reflect why the overall challenges felt so grave. It lives up to the motto made famous by Ben Parker way back when: “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.” The fallout concludes a fantastic story bringing into focus what Segura drives home with this tale. Readers will be very excited to pick this book up.

BREAKDOWN: Segura crafts an excellent take on this unique pairing of heroes and delivers on a tale for the ages. Both main heroes are given an ample amount of time to have their individual stories explained to new readers who may not be familiar with each. The structure flows smoothly, moving things right along without taking anything away from the overall picture. Heroes are defined by their actions. In this world they live in, there are losses and set-backs. Resilience is key to the blueprint of a hero. Both main characters go through this with loss and both find strength in others (and each other) to overcome.

One of the highlights of this book is the personal conversations that the heroes display with their supporting cast. Anya’s with Gilberto and Miguel’s banter with Lyla (his virtual assistant) spotlight their awareness that they are both still searching to conquer their losses and become stronger from them. Segura hits the marks featuring this in many parts of the story. They add another layer to each lead. It plays in even deeper when the main antagonist is revealed, adding to the threat of their actions. Knowing what this individual is capable of, the heroes need to find that extra drive to fight back. Luckily, they have each other to lean on.

The dynamic between Anya and Miguel (Spidey 2099) has many instances of bringing out the best in each other to face the threat at hand. Segura portrays different roles for both, even switching who is the seasoned veteran and novice rookie at times which pays off later in the novel. There is a moment involving a letter that captures that element superbly. It shows the effect of their partnership and is a moment that readers will have a strong positive reaction reading. By the time that its’ concluded, readers have no doubt that two heroes were forged thru this and are stronger coming out of conflict.

FINAL POINT: ARAÑA AND SPIDER-MAN 2099: DARK TOMORROW by Alex Segura brings out the best of what defines being a hero with two popular characters of the Spider-Verse leading the charge. The story is filled with great surprises along with superhero themes lead by Segura’s phenomenal writing. Readers see first-hand how insurmountable odds and personal setbacks are tackled head-on showcasing what is a fantastic read that shouldn’t be missed.

For this entry, we’re at the conclusion of the second arc of arguably the coolest book at the comic shops. Since its’ debut, this book from BOOM! STUDIOS has been a staple on readers’ pull lists and with good reason. The story of Jessica Harrow has a whole energy and vibe unlike anything else you are picking up. The series is taking a small break until July so it is a perfect time to catch up if need be, but luckily we have one more issue to discuss until then. Grim #10 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano sends the ever-evolving mystery into its’ semi-hiatus with an issue we need to discuss. let’s not wait any longer and get into a closer look, shall we?

On a routine job being a reaper in the after-life, Jessica Harrow had no idea what was going to spiral out of control following her accidentally crossing over into the land of the living chasing a runaway soul. Her aunt Adira had put plans in motion to keep Jessica at bay from finding out what caused such an event. A being known as The End came looking for her to set everything into perfect balance. With the help of her fellow reapers Eddie and Marcel, Jessica set out for answers. What she found along the way was the revelation that her father was DEATH! The happy reunion was interrupted by The End and the fight ensuing led to Death’s demise. It also led to Adira banishing Jessica and her friends to the living world, executing her plans to the letter.

While stranded in Las Vegas, it is discovered that people can no longer die and bear a mysterious red marking on their foreheads. Jessica appears to be the cause of this. While diving into the reasons for this, Jessica crosses paths with the the Sisters of Fate. The Sisters have a plan to fix this but Jessica is not on board. Meanwhile Marcel and Eddie find out via Anabell (another reaper) that Adira has sent all the reapers to hunt down Jessica and bring her back. During this talk, they confront what appears to be a devil who attacks Marcel for previous actions in his living years, resulting in sending him to Hell. All the while, her human mother Lilah breaks out of jail and has a party with vested interest into a amulet in her possession.

This issue picks up with Jessica trying to fin a way to help Marcel after the Devil they faced kicks them out of his realm. Eddie is visibly emotional and blaming Jessica for not caring. trying to wrap her head around what just happened, Jessica is comforted by Anabell about what to do next. Anabell attempts to instill some confidence in Jessica. She comes up with an idea to solve all their woes: Jessica needs to take back her father’s scythe. The only problem with that is it is in Adira’s possession.

Speaking of problems, Lilah meets with the mysterious figure who wants the necklace she is carrying. Readers see a new player make a big impact from the unveiling of their identity. Switching gears back to Jessica, the pep talk finally seeps in and she’s ready to go. With the plan in place, Jessica, Eddie and Anabell make an attempt to steal the scythe back. Readers see how this plays out and need to brace for some big moments. It’ a perfect build to get to the closing act. These all lead towards a final page that will send readers home amped up and counting down the days till issue #11.

BREAKDOWN: Phillips sends things off (for now) with an excellent issue. Jessica’s new stat quo has been one she’s been denying this entire arc. Granted, it is a lot to take in with secrets begin revealed but Jessica finally has the moment where she has no other choice but to go for it. Phillips sets this up perfectly using Marcel’s fate as the deciding factor. The conversation with Anabell works superbly as readers see Jessica face those doubts head on. It comes across as a supportive talk and readers will see Jessica find ready to face what lies ahead. The payoff is big once the final act starts and is amplified even more with the closing image. Lilah’s story is slowly coming together, but the introduction of the new figure looks to create a bigger impact on Jessica’s life in the next arc. Their conversation might have been brief in comparison, but the situation Lilah is in now looks to be another challenge thrown in Jessica’s way down the road. Excellent final scenario to leave readers on until the next chapter begins.

This might sound like a broken record at this stage, but how amazing is Flaviano and Renzi’s art? Going for a four wide panel page blueprint, the art drives home how Jessica is impacted by the loss of Marcel and what Fate is lining her up to do. The panel structure also gives the conversation between Jesscia and Anabell a more personal feel as the reader is sitting in on the frank talk about what needs to happen. Jessica’s range of emotions stretch from anxious to scared to this sequence but ultimately end in confident once she accepts what she needs to do. The introduction of the new character also needs to be highlighted. It is a flashy one page panel but instantly connects to the readers that they are something we haven’t seen in this series yet. The debut is bold and charismatic thanks to the coloring of the sequence. Once the story swings back into the final moments, Flaviano’s set-up for the new landscape is eye catching with a near full page panel of their location. It adds to the closing images and where the story heads with the mic drop moment to wrap up on.

FINAL POINT: Grim by Phillips, Flaviano, Renzi and Napolitano has taken readers on quite the journey following the mystery of Jessica Harrow. With this second arc concluding at issue #10, Jessica’s denial of her destiny is answered when forced to address it. Strong writing and amazing art sets comics’ favorite reaper on her inevitable course with a finale that is sure to keep fans amped up for the eventual return.

For this entry, we’re checking out an intriguing limited series coming from Image Comics via Black Market Narrative. Readers should be very familiar with hearing those two entities paired together. Image and BMN are always connected to comics’ most exciting superhero line: the Massive-Verse. However, The latest book to come out from that pairing isn’t of the Radiant Black lore. It is one that will connect with readers of all walks of life for being based around the world of music. DEEP CUTS #1 by KYLE HIGGINS & JOE CLARK (RADIANT BLACK), Danilo Beyruth, Igor Monti and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou takes readers on a voyage thru story centered around the sphere of Jazz Music! Let’s take a closer look at this amazing debut, shall we?

The story kicks off in the era of New Orleans in 1917. A young man with case in hand named Charles Stewart walks thru the streets, ignoring the people around. Stewart is focused on the musical notes filling the air. He is “looking” for a certain sound and is determined to find it through the busy city. After some stops, the young man finds what or should we say who he’s looking for. Making a run for the door, Stewart runs into the bouncer of the club and is turned away for his age. Determined to play in the show, Stewart pulls out his Clarinet and starts playing thru an opened window. This causes the bouncer to approach Stewart to stop him. Before he can make a move, a man peaks his head outside and invites Stewart in. That man is none Jack Cartier, the charismatic star of the show inside.

Cartier convinces the bouncer to let Stewart stay. Cartier recognizes Stewart from trying to crash other shows. It is revealed that Stewart wants to join Cartier’s band. Cartier is impressed by the effort of the young man but doesn’t have him join in the show that night. Instead, Stewart is offered to join Cartier’s band for a parade the next day. Excited beyond belief, Stewart leaves with his dreams in sight. Returning home, he greats his grandmother about his new job. She tries to pass on a warning of “Be careful around musicians. They will break your heart.” It reflects a similar message she gave Charles’ mother. The next day, Charles arrives for the show but finds out it’s not what he was thinking. Cartier greets him with the “honor” of holding his case while they walk in the parade, claiming their isn’t a current spot but if something happens, Charles is in. The parade leads to another opportunity with Cartier, one that Charles will actually be playing his instrument in.

Where is this job based? Readers find out quickly that the entry level Charles is starting at might not be ideal to his grandmother’s liking. The job leads to a whole new world that Charles may or may not be ready for. All he has to guide him is a love for music and makes an unlikely friend in a woman named “Dixie” who works at the establishment. With all these outside influences , what does the future hold for young Charles? Readers see a journey into self discovery as Charles begins to grow in his voice and playing which leads into many surprise directions. The ending is fitting for a first issue that has only begun to show what it’s all about.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Clark start this series off on a very strong note. Seeing the hopefulness pour out of Charles while he is chasing his dream is a theme that drives this first issue. His willingness to be a part of the band moves him into crossing paths with a variety of characters and morals. The relationships that form with the young player along the way each have a significant impact on his path. Cartier comes across as a charming but suspicious musician that reflects a side of the world Charles wants to enter. Due to his eagerness to play, Charles looks past what Cartier is doing but it plays into his eventual growth in this story. Dixie makes a great counter to Cartier as her intentions come across as genuine. The pacing of the tale allows moments to build along with seeing the overall effect music has on Charles. It is easy for readers to connect with what Charles is aspiring for. Once the closing moments begin, there are payoffs for the build that tie all the sub-stories together. It is a solid beginning to introducing readers to the power of jazz and music as a whole.

The art of Beyruth and Monti visualize the hypnotic power of music that engulfs Charles. His search for Cartier’s band comes across almost trance-like as he dodges the world around him until he finds the source. The depiction later in the book when Charles is paying at the new job stands out for much of the same reason. The panels’ coloring of notes and playing comes across as impactful to the listeners in attendance. The expressions of Cartier adds another dynamic to the story. He always comes across smiling with a devilish smirk . This plays into many of his actions with all the characters (not just Charles). Perfect example of this is with Mother Martha. The way that Cartier switches directions with his banter plays right into his influence on Charles and the overall story. The closing brings everything together and sets the tempo for more adventures to come.

FINAL POINT: Higgins, Clark, Beyruth and the team invite readers on a compelling introduction to one of music’s most famous genres. Readers won’t be able to deny seeing how one young man’s ambition leads him on a journey of self-discovery thru the mesmerizing appeal of jazz. Sharp writing and art fill the pages with bringing the story of Charles Stewart front and center to comic readers. You definitely don’t want to miss this on New Comic Book day.

Welcome to a brand new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast.

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest new series from the mastermind behind the mega hit series “Something Is Killing The Children.” Considering who else is along for the horror tale being told, it completely justifies the hype surrounding this book. W0RLDTR33 #1 by JAMES TYNION IV, FERNANDO BLANCO, JORDIE BELLAIRE and ADITYA BIDIKAR from Image Comics embarks a journey into the darkest portion of the internet known as the Undernet and the results are terrifying.

Before we get started with the review, this book has some extreme violent imagery and themes throughout that might be upsetting to some. Reader discretion is strongly advised before jumping into this issue.

That said, if you’re still in for the review, let’s see what all the hype is about, shall we?

An ominous quote welcomes readers to this series: “ Let me Tell You How Much I’ve Come To Hate You Since I Began To Live” - Harlen Ellison “I Have No Mouth and I need To scream (2024).”

A naked woman opens her laptop after committing a murder in what appears to be a hotel room. Signing in with the username of “PH34R” , She accesses the Undernet. With images of violent acts appear all across the screen, she focuses in on one with almost 30,000 views! Readers watch in horror as a young man knocks on a random house and flashes his cell phone in front of an unsuspecting victim, making them disoriented before slitting the gentleman’s throat. The killer is talking to the watching audience and going through his process of murder. The killer does the same thing to the woman in the kitchen of the house before going into the bathroom. The killer is a fifteen year old named Gibson Lane with a camera strapped to his head. On his stream, he brags about killing forty people, much to the delight of “PH34R” watching.

From here, the story shifts to a man named Ellison and his girlfriends Fausta driving by a mountain side en route to Pittsburgh. Ellison is talking about how he found his brother talking about what he saw on the dark web and it was some truly disturbing images. Fausta tries calming his nerves but with little success. While driving, she searches his brother’s social media to calm his nerves more but sees something that chills her to the bone instead. They pull the car over and see that Ellison’s fears were correct that something was terribly wrong.

The story shifts to a man named Gabriel watching on the news about Gibson’s killing spree (now at sixty plus). He stares into a picture on the wall, which triggers a flashback. During this moment, readers see a young Gabriel along with other teenagers trying to stop something from leaving the computer servers they are on. The stakes feel huge for, as one person points out, “we’re just kids”.

The story shifts back to the present as Gabriel calls Liam (presumed to be the boy with the “kids” quote from the flashback. The conversation is uncomfortable, but the message is clear: the undernet has to be stopped from spreading. Gabriel mentions a possible solution is back active: a message board known as W0rldtr33. Gabriel summons Liam and the others from the flashback to meet in Pittsburgh to take this challenge head on.

At this stage, Ellison arrives at the police station to see his brother. However, he’s not alone in arriving at the station. Who else appears wanting to see Gibson? Readers see a final act that no one can predict which way it goes. The final image caps off a brutal and violently horrific saga that has just only begun.

BREAKDOWN: Tynion wastes no time in setting things in motions with this story. Each major player (thus far) gets their fair share of panel time to start their stories but all pale in comparison to the heinous actions of Gibson. Tynion writes him as a delusional psychopath throughout his murder spree. Ellison comes across as a caring brother, lost at what to do with the situation at hand (and rightfully so). “PH34R” and Gabriel have only begun to make an impact but, at first read, they have a destined collision course waiting in the wings. The story itself is extremely upsetting as the Undernet has only shown a fraction of what its capable of. It is pure horror at a terrifying high level. As with most of his writing, no one is better at the slow burn build than Tynion. With only one issue down, readers sense the terror behind what is about to come and will be locked in for the long haul to see where this story is heading.

Blanco and Bellaire spare no expense in visualizing the insanity unfolding within these pages. The murder spree is horrific and unapologetic. The set-up of 12 or 9 panel pages gave those disturbing moments a more direct impact when reading. Gibson looking in the bathroom mirror after killing the couple was a blunt depiction into his madness. His mannerisms will be unsettling to some readers. It’s matched on impacting the readers with Fausta’s reaction to finding his social media videos. Once her tears start, readers will connect with her reaction to what she just saw. “PH34R” stands out (not because she is nude the majority of time) from her slight grin seeing the lunacy transpire. The final act caps off the brutal tale perfectly with a final parting image showing the fallout response to what has just unraveled before he audience.

FINAL POINT: The darkest secret of the internet steps into the spotlight in the pages of Image Comic’s latest series. Tynion, Blanco and the team present an absolutely frightening tale of horror in disturbing fashion. Solid storytelling equaled out with alarming imagery gives this story a distinct feel as it progresses to the next chapter. Makes sure to keep an eye out for this on New Comic Book Day.

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest from a team that has been tearing it up on the independent scene for quite some time now. Allen Dunford, Will Radford, Brian Balondo, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz have been on quite to hot streak with their Kickstarter projects via Top Hat Studios. Their current one, Grandma Chainsaw #2 hit goal first day and has created quite the buzz for itself. The campaign ends April 28th and if you haven’t signed up yet, check out this review of the latest chapter of the book that put them on the comic map: Pocus Hocus! Let’s discuss, shall we?

Pocus Hocus #5

In case you are not familiar, Pocus Hocus centers around a man who sells his soul to a demon to become the world’s greatest magician. Pocus’s reasons for doing this? He wants impress his father and get his paternal approval. Unfortunately for him, Pocus’s father passes away before seeing him display his powers. Years later, the demon reappeared looking for Pocus to help him get out of a mess. Failure to do so meant both the demon and Pocus would die. Luckily, there’s one person in Pocus’s life that might be able to save him: his assistant Emily. Together, they embark on a journey into Hell where more secrets are uncovered and Pocus’ life as he knows it has changed forever.

This issue kicks off with Pocus, Hugo the Demon, HORUS the rabbit (FTW!) and Emily being invited into the realm controlled by Queen Lilith. Persius walks in to break the news that the group is here, but Lilith knows this already since she invited them in. Persius is killed instantly for questioning the queen. Lilith allows Victoria to take out “team Pocus” with the exception of Emily, who she has big plans for.

Meanwhile, Pocus is drowning his sorrows in front of a small crowd. After making “friends” with the patrons, Pocus senses everything isn’t alright. There are voices lurking which tip him off. While trying to leave, it is revealed there is a trap set to kill him. The bartender transforms into a huge spider like creature. Pocus makes a run for the door and is greeted by his fellow travelers. With a united front led by HORUS, Pocus and the team handle the monster. However, there’s no time to celebrate as a mysterious figure by the name of Samuel S. Ramsuel arrives on the scene.

What is his intent? Why does he have a vested interest in Pocus’s journey? More importantly, what is the history between him and HORUS?! Readers jump along for the ride as Pocus faces a grave challenge that he might not be fully capable of handling. The final page drops a huge exclamation point on the latest chapter that will have fans looking for when the next Kickstarter campaign begins!

BREAKDOWN: Radford and Dunford keep readers guessing with a touch more serious issue that they have seen previously. The spotlight on Lilith gives this chapter a different feel as she teases at her master plan for Pocus and co. without having a great deal of panel time featured. That said, there’s no shortage of the classic humor that has made this series stand out. The initial encounter with the spider creature plays out with Pocus’ obliviousness to what is happening with quips sprinkled throughout. Even when the creature gets ready to strike, Emily counters with a monologue only to be countered with a bored Spider asking for things to get going again. Another standout moment is when Ramseul makes his debut. The conversation is light hearted with solid laugh out loud moments are mixed in. Horus’s reputation was already legendary but hearing Ramseul talk about it raised its’ stock. Form here, the story shifts back into a more serious-esque tone, ramping up on the drama before closing strong with a big final page.

Balondo welcomes readers into this corner of darkness with some wild imagery. The creatures featured in this series jump out from the moment they hit a panel. The spider debut was strong in its’ initial debut only to be complemented by a full panel showcase. Excellent two-page spread to show the “team” in action. The mannerisms of the team when first talking with Ramseul are a noteworthy moment. The way Balondo sets up the back and forth with Horus, Hugo and Ramseul gives a much needed detour from the more direct tone of the book. The action sequences play off well in the final chapter to ramp up what is unfolding. Superb final page to finalize events while building up anticipation for the next issue.

FINAL POINT: The next phase of the world’s favorite soul selling magician sets course with another excellent read. Dunford, Radford, Balondo, Smith, & Lentz mix up the light hearted dialogue with a more direct theme with the writing & outstanding art. The series sets a new course and readers will be excited to get this in their hands (along with Grandma Chainsaw #2). Make sure you don’t miss both!

For this entry, we’re following along the slow burn build centering round a popular character in the Something Is Killing The Children universe from Boom! Studios. HOUSE OF SLAUGHTER #14 by Tate Brombal, Antonio Fuso, Miguel Muerto and Andworld Design (Series Development: James Tynion and Deisgns and Development: Werther Dell’edera) features Jace Boucher aka The Butcher as he struggles dealing with his past catching up to him while waiting for a love to return that never will. Considering how things went last issue, Jace is in a race against time to save someone before it’s too late. Let’s take a deeper dive on what’ happening here, shall we?

Jace Boucher has been trying to start life over after having a “falling out” with the Order of St. George. The result costed him his hand and his lover Aaron Slaughter was killed but Jace has no knowledge of this. All he has been doing is being a guardian to orphans waiting for Aaron to come back.

During this time, an orphan named Sunny has become persistent in following in Jace’s hunting footsteps. This resulted him in coming into contact with Jolie Boucher and her family, who have taken him in trying to induct him into their order. Jolie and Jace have a noted history with things not ending well years ago. Jace knows the danger surrounding Sunny and makes a return back to New Orleans in an attempt to save him from the danger Jolie is welcoming him into to. The prime example o this is Sunny is locked in a room with a monster to see if he can become a hunter or not.

This issue opens up with Jace entering the Messiah Bar, in hopes of finding Jolie. The place is packed with party-goers and at the end of the bar is Jolie. Jace approaches her and the reunion is surprisingly very happy. Over a few drinks, they start a conversation which leads to Jace asking about Sunny. Jolie counters with bringing up when they first met. It leads to talk of Aaron Slaughter which Jolie realizes Jace doesn’t know the truth.

The pair gets moved to a private room where readers get the truth about what went down between Jolie and Jace. It gives some much needed clarity to why Jolie has such an axe to grind with Jace. The tension builds to a breaking point as Jolie keeps dodging the questions about Sunny until a moment happens that changes everything. Can Jace handle what transpires? What about the fate of Sunny? Readers see how things are not what they seem as Jace’s noble plans has a new challenge thrown in his direction steering the story into a new avenue.

BREAKDOWN: The dynamic between Jolie and Jace has always been one centered in mystery but Brombal centers this issue around that plot point. Readers get many details on their history and clarity on why Jolie has used Sunny as a means to attack Jace. The conversation comes across as one between old friends before turning into an emotional standoff, bringing back many buried feelings between them both. Even with only two characters involved for the majority of the issue, Brombal keeps things moving without stalling the pace to hang on o stay in neutral gear. The ending is a solid surprise which sets up the major players involved for a collision course that readers can expect a big payoff for.

Fuso creates a unique setting for the conversation this issue. The conversation reflects a casual talk between two old friends. Jolie’s mannerisms doesn’t tip off too much to worry Jace. She comes across excited for her friend and even concerned when she realizes Jace doesn’t know the truth about Aaron. The panels featuring Sunny stands out with the coloring used for these panels. It helps connect with readers what danger he’s going thru while Jolie is calm and relaxed with all of this. The big change in the story is easily felt with the full page shot of the surprise. It all ties together to feature Jace’s struggle to save Sunny even though it appears it’s more and more a losing battle.

FINAL POINT: Readers see the history of Jolie and Jace unfold right before their eyes within the pages of House of Slaughter #14. Brombal, Fuso and the team present the personal talk between the two leads with an ever-changing conversation that sets things up for a huge closing looming in the wings. Keep an eye out for this issue on New Comic Book Day.
