Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re taking a deep dive into the latest issue from Image Comics and Black Market Narrative that has readers literally on the edge of their seats waiting for the next moment to drop! The flagship title of comics’ most exciting line: The Massive-Verse is gearing up for a monster event with “The Catalyst War” coming later this year. The build has had longtime readers guessing and bracing for what’s coming, but no one is ready for this issue’s conclusion! This chapter by Kyle Higgins, Eduardo Ferigato, Marcelo Costa, Raul Angulo and Becca Carey will be an issue & its’ conclusion is going to be the talk of comic social media as readers prepare for the war upcoming.

Radiant Black #23

Nathan Burnett is a down on his luck failed writer who’s moved back to Lockport, Illinois from Los Angeles. Fate however had different plans as he (and his best friend Marshall) came across a mysterious object which granted powers. Thus the individual known as Radiant Black was born. That is only the beginning of their journey into becoming superheroes as it has taken many twists, turns, and role reversals in a short amount of time. Let’s not forget the many friends and foes they’ve met along the way including……ONE GIANT ROBOT!

It is that said robot’s appearance that has drawn the attention of Wendell aka Radiant Yellow, who is trying to advert the oncoming attack he has seen visions of. Last readers saw Nathan, he was heading back to LA to handle some unfinished business and was forced to confront an even greater foe….a man known as BRAYDEN, who has earned the title of most unlikeable character in the Massiveverse and it’s not even close. Seriously, he’s the worst. Factor in that the power Radiant has not been working properly and the pair has their work cut out for them.

As this issue picks up, Wendell is in Lockport working on trying to communicate with the large robot head recovered after the ONE GIANT ROBOT fight. After bringing it back online, Wendell starts digging in for information but appears to get more than he bargained for with one statement. Meanwhile, Nathan (with Radiant Mask on) has a “business” meeting with the members of Circle Guy News, who handle the wholesale and merch accounts of “Radiant Black” since Marshall took over the mantle when Nathan was in a coma. The guys are talking about being paid and try leveraging Marshall’s identity as Radiant Black until they see Marshall walk by. Once their bargaining chip fades away, Nathan concludes the meeting with ideas of finding the right percentage to make everyone happy.

Returning home from the meeting, the guys walk into the garage and find Wendell’s powers going crazy while the robot head has been dissected! Making the save, Nathan catches a defeated Wendell, who can only utter “I…was…..wrong….” Wendell reveals that the giant robot was only a scout, and nowhere near the first attack. Readers also find out he miscalculated the robot sending a signal out. The optimism of averting war failed. Their only chance now is time….and time runs out! The invasion comes right to their front door!

How do the heroes fare when the battle has literally walked right inside? Is there a chance for survival? At this stage, the story speeds into action with a HUGE moment that readers will not believe when they see it! Some may even say it’s Game-Changing! Will it be enough to turn the tables? Readers find out quickly how dire things have become in such a short amount of moments. In desperate times, tough choices are made. This is the case here as a decision is made that will have major repercussions to close this excellent issue out with. There is no doubt now. The road to the Catalyst War has arrived!

BREAKDOWN: Higgins sets events in motion that readers need to brace for. The beginning of the book is the calm before the storm featuring the “Circle Guy News” team (and for more on them, check out the Invincible! Podcast). One of this series’ charms is seeing Marshall and Nathan try filling in for the other with characters they haven’t met. The moment is a fun one here and elevates the more serious tone the issue swings in following. That said, seeing Wendell defeated and broken was a powerful sequence illustrating the one shot they had to avert war just slipped thru their fingers. Wendell has always been a fantastic character whenever he’s shown up in the series (see #18), but how he reacts to a crisis of this level jumps out at readers and translates how dangerous things have become. Nathan and Marshall don’t even have a chance to fully process what’s unfolding around them but that never waivers both of their heroic spirits. Readers see how they rise to the occasion and throw caution to the win. In times like these, they both make decisions that translate to the readers why fate chose them to be heroes. The final moments of this book exemplify that and close out events with one hell of an exclamation point!

Ferigato brings the action to this chapter and sets an accelerated pace once the action starts. Prior to that, there are quite a few notable images that fans will be raving abound. The first is the double page spread where Nathan and Marshall find Wendell cracking the robot head code for information. Seeing Wendell’s powers used in this manner gave it a chaotic and desperate feel which has followed Wendell since he caught wind with what was coming. It’s equally matched when he’s saved by Nathan and appears broken, being only able to muster “I..was…wrong.” This becomes the match that lights the action for the majority of the rest of the issue The battle panels are non-stop intense. From the double full-page lead-in to a full page moment with a very cool event thrown in that readers will be excited to see, Ferigato (along with Angulo and Costa) deliver excellent action scene after scene. Once arriving at the final act, readers get a second to catch their breaths before the choice is made to send this issue into a close with much to look forward to next time.

FINAL POINT: Radiant Black #23 defines what makes this series (and the Massive-Verse as a whole) Comics’ most exciting line. Combining heart-stopping action, game-changing events and character-driven moments, Higgins, Ferigato present readers a small sample of things to come with the looming “Catalyst War” speeding forward. Readers simply can’t miss this issue on New Comic Book Day!

MISTER MAMMOTH OGN (DARK HORSE COMICS)

MISTER MAMMOTH by Matt Kindt (BRZRKR with Keanu Reeves), Jean-Denis Pendanx and Jim Campbell welcomes readers into the life of the world’s greatest detective and a case that might be the only one he can’t solve. Knowing the creators involved, this is a mystery readers won’t be able to wait to see get solved! Let’s take a closer look into the enigma surrounding the legend of the puzzling investigator, shall we?

The story opens up an overview sight of New York City at night. In a lone apartment, there is a soap opera on the television. A voice is narrating the story for the readers. The description plays out as a woman is sent away by her husband. After being deemed “ill” by doctors, she plots her escape from a secluded area with one intention on her mind: Murder.

At this moment, the story shifts back to a bar where things appear to have become unglued. There is damage everywhere with most of the patrons outside recovering from their fight wounds. What or better yet, who could have caused this? Readers don’t wait long to see a group beating down a large individual who turned off a double overtime game for the soap (or “crime story”). When the police show up and the crowd disperses, one man is left in the aftermath: MISTER MAMMOTH!

After a flashback sequence, a man names William Carona is sitting in an office, praising the person behind a desk. Readers see a quick glimpse of the office in daylight before they see a recovering Mammoth entertaining Carona’s banter. Carona starts breaking down how Mammoth has solved impossible cases in near record time while Mammoth does his own evaluation of the potential client, more or less asking him to get to the point.

Carona (who is quite wealthy from his time in the pharmaceuticals business) states that he feels someone named “Mr. X” is trying to ruin him unless he pays a one Million dollar ransom. Mammoth is handed a picture of the client walking in the street, which was taken less than a week ago. This comes off the heels of the threatening phone call. With this information at hand, Mammoth begins his investigation.

Readers tag along as they watch Mammoth go to work. With his imposing figure (standing over seven feet tall), Mammoth begins gathering information from various sources. Using his impeccable skills, Mammoth meets with Carona and starts tearing apart his case. Mammoth gets Carona to come clean about an affair with a woman named Vera, which Mammoth plans to go meet next. This move pleases Carona who appears to be amused like a fan to see how Mammoth works.

From this stage, Mammoth sets out to talk with Vera. The information he gets sends him on a new path: uncertainty. This is new ground for Mammoth as something is not adding up. With growing frustration, Mammoth furthers his search for clues, unlocking memories he would wish would be long forgotten.

How does the past tie into the present? What is the symbolism of the soap opera in relation to Mammoth? The case delves into further directions that will keep the audience locked in. The final act of this story will bring new points to light as with every great mystery tale. The payoff will hit hard and answer many looming threads in the beginning of the story. Its’ epilogue completes this chapter of Mammoth’s life with leaving readers wanting more. The novel is an impressive read that won’t be easy to put down.

BREAKDOWN: Kindt weaves quite the exciting mystery behind a complex walking puzzle that is Mister Mammoth. There are many layers to the character which makes for a fascinating lead character. In many detective stories, the sleuth carries a confidence unmatched. Early in this story, readers witness that Mammoth doesn’t buy into his hype, just relying on his feelings of what he can and can’t solve. The man behind the myth is through at what he does, but Kindt portrays him as a broken soul but deception may be reality. The soap opera portion may throw some readers off at first but before closing out the book, its’ importance gets clarified. The same can be said for the childhood flashbacks. Kindt paces all three plots without losing sight of the endgame: defining who is Mister Mammoth.

Pendanx makes a strong US debut with the art duties for this novel. The art captures the grittiness of Mammoth’s world and reflects the adversities he’s gone thru. New York has an energy all its’ own and even the breaks where things venture off the case keep a unique feel to a larger picture being pulled into focus. Solid work with the coloring to bring each scenario to a greater light. One of the strongest art elements is the mannerisms of both Mammoth and Carona. Readers can sense there’s a bigger game of chess being played out between the two as the investigation becomes exposed. The final moments of the close bring forth a great deal of emotions that have been building travelling alongside Mammoth’s journey. There’s an excellent final moment involving a painting that ends this story on a very strong note.

For this entry, we’re checking out the first chapter of the final arc for a fantasy series on the Comixology Originals line that you want to keep your eyes out for. Season 3 of BREAKLANDS by Justin Jordan, Tyasseta, Sarah Stern, and Rachel Deering welcomes readers back to the adventures of Kasa Fain and her brother Adam as they look to be the deciding factors in the fate of the world. If you’re just checking this series out, the world as you know it has vastly changed. The entire population has powers…EVERYONE! One hundred and fifty years after this has happened and the landscape has changed. Through this new environment, readers have met Kasa Fain, her brother Adam, Gargarin, Toy, who has pyrotechnic powers, and the nearly impenetrable Ruth to name a few. With danger lurking around every turn, can Kasa (even with her evolving powers as a Null) keep the people she cares about safe or will they succumb to the Breaklands they live in?

The season premiere kicks off with Gargarin speeding away with an unconscious Adam, narrating his actions. Feeling that there’s one way to escape this reality of “the Break”, Gargarin talks thorough his actions. As Gargarin takes Adam through the terrain, readers see a huge image that appears to be Shining City. Once they approach, an unseen attack forces them to stop. Chocking to death, Gargarin makes a plea for the voice talking claiming he can find the null. The attack stops and the pair are let into the city. The Magister confronts them and takes Adam into medical treatment. Gargarin claims Rask, who has been the imposing antagonist of this series, was behind this. However, the Magister doesn’t believe him and takes Gargarin as prisoner!

Meanwhile, Toy and Ruth are travelling with an unconscious Kasa in the back seat. During their conversation concerning Rask, Kasa wakes up confused and asking about her brother. Toy updates her about Gargarin’s actions. With Rask and the Kingdom now looking for Kasa, the future looks bleak. Readers get to witness the major players advance towards the endgame. Will Gargarin survive returning to the Shining City? What levels is Rask willing to go to? Can Kasa save her brother? There are many thoughts coming out of this issue with a finale sequence that shows this conclusion has only just begun.

BREAKDOWN: Jordan hits the ground running with the season premiere. New readers might be a bit lost at first with what is unfolding but can pick things up quickly. Gargarin’s story showed how the Magister is seeing Adam as a weapon for what lies ahead. His actions come across cold and vindictive to the plans he has involving Adam. It mirrors what Rask has planned out for Kasa. With having two people as perceived as powerful as they are, Jordan sets them the brother and sister as pawns to be used in a much grander scale later. Pacing gives readers enough time to connect (or reconnect for longtime readers) with the cast that as things move quickly, there still is enough time to become invested in the final play.

Tyasseta brings a very clean and energetic style to the book. The full page visual of Shining City is one that jumps out when reading this issue. It gives readers a full idea into why Gargarin is so desperate to get back inside with the detailed panels. Once Adam has been taken into medical treatment/custody, the switch to the pink coloring when using his powers is a noticeable touch that works. The panels with Rask also are noteworthy. Seeing Rask’s rage boil up to unleashing his power onto his followers makes a statement while giving a dramatic build thrown in. Kasa’s time in the book captures the panic she feels when realizing what Gargarin has done. The emotional outbursts continue with a very direct point once Adam realizes he’s still missing his sister. This all helped illustrate the interest in the siblings. Great final panel to set things in motion heading towards the season/series conclusion.

Eva aka the streamer known as “Evaplayss” aka the teleporting Radiant Pink has been going overtime in her heroic duties to the point of scary burnout. During a charity appearance at a hospital, an explosion occurs drawing Eva into action. When trying to save an EMT named Kelly, her powers go haywire. This miscue lands the pair into a distant world and very far from home!

As the pair attempts to get back home, they wind up entering different worlds full of mystery. All the while, it appears as a budding romance is forming between Eva and Kelly. The pair land in another world and find a cat spaceship which its’ lone gigantic cat protector names Kitty Kitty injures Eva. On top of all this, Eva discovers Kelly is wearing a special vest draining her powers!

The pair call a temporary truce for their issues after an argument and form a conversation with Kitty. Its’ explained that Kitty is trying to get back to Katneep IV. With creatures destroying the ship, the trio make an escape through a pod but appear to be in even more danger with a giant hand reaching for the ship!

This issue opens up with a return to Whiting, Indiana where Eva resides. Her best friend Maddie and Eva’s grandmother are trying to be calm during Eva’s disappearance but the fear is growing. However, Maddie comes across a call meant for Eva that might hold some promise of finding Eva.

Off world, Eva and Kelly appear very relaxed and recap the previous issue’s cliffhanger ending. The pair along with Kitty Kitty make the dramatic escape and land on Katneep IV. Eva and Kelly get the impression that their guests of honor but not everything is what it seems.

How does the pair adjust to life on Katneep IV? What of their blossoming romance? Who was on the phone that Maddie heard? There are many questions swirling around this issue that readers get some clarity on before heading to a mind-bending final act. Get ready for an exciting finish to this chapter but there is definitely more story to be told before this saga is said and done.

BREAKDOWN: Camarena & Flores delve into the growing romance portion of the story while maintain the fun energy that has been this series’ calling card from issue one. Excellent cameo from a certain Massive-verse character to tie things back to the present world The world of Katneep IV is an entertaining break from the overall picture. It sets up two key areas of the story: Defining their feelings and a final act that readers will not be expecting. Eva has been an evolving character within this run and looks to expand on that growth with how the final pages play out.

Kubert’s art is as stellar as always. The Katneep IV moments are an enjoyable break but this issue’s key panels break down the heavy emotions of the characters. Maddie and Eva’s grandmother’s pain about not knowing where Eva will hit readers with the seriousness of her situation. The growing relationship goes thru a wide range of feeling, right into the final act. Kubert seizes the reader’s attention with how Eva reacts to those closing moments. This plays right into a noteworthy final panel that leaves the door open for where this story goes into its’ conclusion.

FINAL POINT: The latest adventure of the youngest radiant continues to shine with a final sequence of events that will definitely have readers talking. Camarena, Flores, Kubert & the team keep the winning formula intact for this issue with solid writing and energetic art. The series has been an enjoyable trip this far with sadly one stop left. Don’t miss out on this issue and series on New Comic Book Day!

Coming off the heels of an impressive debut, the supernatural saga left readers with quite the cliffhanger. Let’s take a closer look and see where things shape up now, shall we?

Van Nguyen’s life is anything but normal. Being born during a solar eclipse, Van developed an uncanny ability to see ghosts. Unfortunately, Van discovered this ability while being the power source for energy to an evil spirit he referred to as “Eye face.” For his first five years of his life, Van spent time in an out of the hospital while his hair turned “Ghost” white due to Eye Face’s feeding off his energy. This all changed when Van discovered another that not only could he SEE ghosts, but if they could physically touch him, Van could physically fight it back!

With a knockout punch Deontay Wilder would be proud of, Van knocked Eye Face into oblivion (or so he thought). Each time Eye Face came back, Van became stronger in fighting back. This seemed to be starting a new age for Van assuming a (somewhat) normal life. However, like most best laid plans, this doesn’t go over well as a trip to see his mom in a power-lifting contest turns into something else as more ghosts have arrived. Van learns very quickly that Eye Face was the least of his problems.

After a harsh defeat, Van leaves home while his mom is asleep to take down more ghosts. Walking by a haunted house, Van runs into someone who might be able to relate to his issues.

This issue opens up with a man named Rick Wallace telling Van how he knew Van was born on an eclipse. Puzzled by his insight, Van starts digging into Rick’s knowledge of the house they are at. Rick tells Van (and the readers) about serial killer Dalton Wyngard and what he did with his victims’ bodies. This persuades Van to back off on his initial plan of dealing with the inhabitant ghosts of the house and follows Rick for more knowledge. After revealing he’s a witch, Rick breaks about how other kids haven’t been as fortunate as Van involving their gifts due to being medicated.

Rick has more to show Van concerning their world but Van is skeptical. What does Rick want to show Van? Readers hop on-board as Rick shows Van a whole new aspect in the land of the apparitions. How does the young hero handle this information? What other reveals does Rick have in store? Is there a big change in the story after? Readers will have a lot to process heading into the final page which is guaranteed to have fans talking about what they just witnessed!

BREAKDOWN: Gunter keeps readers on their toes with some solid reveals mixed in the overall story. The mystery behind Rick was an interesting dynamic to throw into the young hero’s world but played a noteworthy role in expanding the landscape they’re currently in. Van’s an emerging character at this age and has no idea what he’s not become involved with. Gunter doesn’t shy away from this and it made for some interactions that should play out bigger with the story’s progression. The big surprise in the final act brings up a huge shift in the story, but one that never loses focus on the main theme at hand.

Andan and Loughridge brings Van’s supernatural world a few different looks this issue. The panel sequence involving Dalton Wyngard jumps out with its’ use of colors and details on the victims. Another great panel sequence involves Van, Rick and a police officer in pursuit. The set-up (along with Dukeshire’s lettering) gave a dose of intrigue to a brief scene. This was followed by an excellent full page showcasing more facts about the ghosts that lurk in Van’s world. When the action hits, the pages feel fluid and never ease up on delivering on the importance factor. The final act is shadowed well enough until the very end, where it adds a big close to a packed issue.

FINAL POINT: The life and Times of Van Nguyen continues to capture the imagination of comic readers with a grand follow-up to its’ thrilling debut. Gunter, Andan and the team dive deeper into the questions surrounding Van’s abilities and what challenges lie ahead. Definitely keep an eye out for this issue and series on New Comic Book Day on Comixology.

BARNSTORMERS by Scott Snyder, Tula Lotay, Dee Cunniffe and Richard Starkings has introduced readers into the world of Bix and Tillie, who’s been dodging danger since their initial introduction. The pair of unlikely partners turned lovers has taken fans on a dramatic roller-coaster bringing everything to a fever pitch with last issue’s game-changing moment. Now at issue #5, Can the pair out make it out of this situation to fly another day? Let’s not delay any longer and dive into the series finale, shall we?

Post World War 1, Hawk E. Baron aka Bix has taken up being an aeriel showman as a way to make ends meat. On one fateful flight, little did he know how fast his life would change. Bix becomes an unlikely wedding crasher as he inadvertently disrupts the wedding of Peyton Carlyle and Tillie. Considering his family is very wealthy, Peyton shows he is not one to take kindly to this type of accident and imprisons Bix on the family’s property.

However, Bix has an unlikely ally in this mess: Tillie, who winds up freeing him and join him on the escape from the Carlyle estate! With the pair now on the run, there is no escape from the consequences of their actions in Peyton’s eyes. Peyton hires Zeke West to bring Tillie back, but little does he realize that she doesn’t want to. Tillie and Bix become a pair of thieves as they steal from the wealthy while falling in love along the way. With the emotions building, a fateful encounter at a mansion party in Florida causes the situation to spiral further out of control.

When Peyton runs into the pair, his rage takes over as he begins firing a gun at them inside the mansion. One missed shot causes a deadly fire that the high-flying pair is blamed for. In a moment of panic, Tillie knocks Bix out and turns herself back over to Peyton and Zeke thinking this will solve all the problems.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case as Peyton isn’t going to forgive and forget. Bix makes a heroic attempt to rescue Tillie but it doesn’t go exactly as planned. After hitting Tillie in a fit of rage, Peyton starts fighting and gaining the upper hand on Bix. However, during the fight, Peyton loses his gun and is killed by Tillie!

This issue picks right up in the aftermath of Peyton’s death. Zeke is at the morgue preparing on what his next move is going to be. With reporters asking questions surrounding a wealthy socialite’s death, Zeke gives no answers as he mentally prepares for the showdown with Bix and Tillie.

Meanwhile, Bix and Tillie resume their flying ways and have to make a stop by an airshow to refuel. Bix has a belief about fellow Barnstormers watching out for each other. Being spotted as public fugitives is a risk they take when they land. Readers find out if Bix’s theory is true as the pair prepares for their greatest spectacle yet.

There is no shortage of drama as the pair makes their latest escape from a growing past while trying to fly away into a better tomorrow. Without question, when all is said and done, readers will have a satisfying conclusion for this epic tale.

BREAKDOWN: The story of Bix and Tillie has been centered around the theme of rebirth. Both have come from pasts that they keep closed off but once together, they become new people. Snyder presents them a pair finding optimism in each other, even though both know it’s on borrowed time ala a dream. Throughout this series, readers have seen how hard they’ve fought to hang on to what they have together. The finale never loses sight of that idea. Even with mounting pressure and danger out of their hands, the pair fights to the bitter end to hang on to what they have. Even Zeke West has a moment of rebirth with this issue as he finds himself rededicated to finishing the job that has worn on him. Snyder sets a steady pace with excellent character moments sprinkled in heading towards its’ final act. Once there, the series concludes in a way that is fitting to its’ overall themes. There is nothing left on the table as the final panel is read. Excellent conclusion.

Every issue has been breathtaking to look at due to the phenomenal job by Lotay and Cunniffe. Capturing the feel of a historic period and giving it an energy all its’ own has been such a strength to the series. The coloring of the panels reflected the emotions of the characters involved with this issue. From Zeke’s darker tones reflecting on what is evitable to finishing his job, to the fleeting moments of savoring the dream in the sky between Bix and Tillie before making an attempt for a final push, Lotay locks in readers to basking in those panels. The push toward the final act jumps out with a great full page aerial shot that needs to be seen! It sets the tempo for the final run to the concluding portion of the book. The drama never sits in coach for this creative flight. Sensational final panels to close out the story on.

FINAL POINT: Barnstormers by Snyder, Lotay, Cunniffe and Starkings presents a story based around a pair of unlikely lovers who risk everything for an impossible new life. The story kept soaring to new heights with incredible writing paired with fantastic artwork. The complexity of Bix and Tillie’s characters engaged readers as they found themselves caught up in the spiraling drama unfolding around them. Heading into this final flight, readers will be left with a compelling adjournment to a must-have series for any comic book reader.

LOCAL MAN #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re diving back into the world of JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK in the pages of one of Image Comics’ best new series. LOCAL MAN #2 by by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio picks up on the mystery surrounding Jack’s return home and fall from grace in the eyes of the general public. The story calls back to the early days of Image Comics and made a strong impression with its’ debut. As an old school reader who grew up on Spawn, Youngblood and Shadowhawk to name a few, the series mixes in nice homages to the past while keeping a modern feel moving forward. There is much to discuss with the latest issue, so let’s not wait any longer and dive in, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The series focuses around Jack Xaver, known to the public as former Third-Gen team member Crossjack. Removed from the team, Jack returns home to Farmington disgraced and unwelcomed by the town (and even his own family). It is never a good sign when the most popular phrase in town is “F*** CROSSJACK”. Never the less, Jack tries getting used to his “new normal” but can’t escape his past. His former arch-enemy Hodag tracks him down. Jack thinks this is a trip down memory lane but Hodag is actually trying to relay a message with no avail. Hodag is arrested and taken to jail while Jack finds an old (and maybe his only) friend Inga to try making sense of everything.

Jack can’t even catch a break here when Third Gen shows up and gives him paperwork stating he violated copyright by engaging in super hero activities with Hodag. What is a super-hero supposed to do when they can’t be a super-hero? Unfortunately, there appears to be even bigger concerns on the horizon as Hodag is brutally murdered inside his holding cell.

This issue opens up with the police arriving to bring Jack in for questioning involving Hodag’s death. Jack is very puzzled to what’s going on but seeing the pictures of Hodag brings a bit of shock to the fallen hero. Chief Bucholz begins questioning Jack, but the alibi given is not going to make the Chief happy. Jack states that he was with Inga (The Chief’s wife) during the time of Hodag’s death. Jack is released but not without some parting shots from both, which readers will have much enjoyment with.

Returning home, Jack finds more than his disappointed father waiting for him. Third-Gen has a watchful drone informing him that he broke copyright again by “helping” the police with Hodag’s death investigation". Jack gets wise to his drone problem and makes a deal with it to monitor him while he takes his dog for a walk. That walk leads him to the doorstep of Hodag’s mother!

How does that conversation go down? Is Jack ready for what lies ahead? Better yet, are the readers? The talk may throw some readers for a loop but at this stage, anything not “F*** CROSSJACK” for Jack is a win. Post-conversation, the final act steers plans into a new direction heading the story onward. Excellent flip-book companion portion to give some noteworthy elements to the overall story.

BREAKDOWN: Fleecs & Seeley continue to slowly peel layers back into the mystery behind Jack’s firing from Third-Gen. The banter between Jack and Officer Buckolz was a fun play as it established both characters while setting up for more in the future. The strongest portion of this issue falls at the conversation between Jack and Hodag’s mother. It will surprise some readers but its’ message is very straight-forward. . Its’ a well-timed pace changer that has a bigger after effect than anyone can fathom. The small nods to Image’s past (such as the TV shows page ala early Spawn), were noteworthy as there is much more to Jack than readers might be ready to find out. The flip-book portion serves its’ purpose giving more insight onto what really happened in the past. This will pay off big when readers get the huge reveal about Jack building within the series.

The art perfectly captures Jack’s tiredness of the post-superhero life. Readers bare witness to the dread of Jack dealing with the fallout from Hodag’s death. Excellent panel shot of the “welcome to Farmington” Third-Gen weathered image as Jack looks up to see himself in the past. The conversation with Hodag’s mother delivers on the emotional impact they both share with his loss. The facial expressions show the grief and anger she feels, countered by Jack realizing what this moment represents not only to her, but himself as well. Great final panel to send readers off with until their next trip into Farmington. The retro feel of the flip book adds a solid compliment to the more grounded tone of the current state of Jack’s life.

FINAL POINT: Local Man #2 follows up on its’ impressive debut with an issue grounded in the mystery of Jack Xaver’s post-heroic woes. Fleecs, Seeley and the team take readers along for the ride with solid art and writing questioning whether Jack can handle the weight of his “new normal” or buckle at its’ pressure. The story is kicking into another gear and it is one not to miss at the local comic shops this week!

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #30 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

For this entry, we are checking out the finale issue of the latest chapter involving the next big comic property now making its’ way to Netflix in the very near future. Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design is a series known for its’ fantastic storytelling and its’ current storyline has been building up the latest threat to Erica Slaughter to a dangerous level. Issue #30 brings an end to the current arc and all bets are off of how Erica Slaughter gets out of this situation alive.

Tribulation, New Mexico has become the center of mystery and endangerment with the emergence of a monster known as “the Duplicate” running around. In one attack, the monster murdered an entire family leaving behind Gabi as a sole witness. Riqui, a local bartender, has now become the protector of Gabi but clearly isn’t ready to deal with such a threat. Luckily (pending how you look at it), Erica Slaughter has re-emerged from hiding to take down the creature. Erica’s presence hadn’t gone unnoticed as the Order Of St. George has sent the vicious Cutter to Tribulation to end Erica once and for all. Along the way, Cutter has left a bloody trail behind with her murder of Erica’s longtime ally Big Gary Slaughter as her sick crowning achievement.

Cutter continues to put the pressure on Erica as she’s now framed Erica for the murders of Tribulation police officers inside their own station (that Cutter killed personally), and is assisting The Duplicate by making it a clone of Erica! With the walls closing in (along with another surprise from the Order en route to Tribulation), Erica escapes the police station with Gabi and Riqui wounded but ready to fight back.

This issue opens up with the aftermath of Cutter’s rampage at the police station. Cutter returns to the scene of the crime, with only one officer knowing Erica’s side of events. Cutter tries playing off the sheriff’s doubts about Erica until she realizes Erica has made a bold move: taking Cutter’s precious doll from her bag! This sends Cutter into a rage in front of the officers. Meanwhile Erica, Riqui and Gabi head to Riqui’s bar “The Luck Of The Irish” to get some assets for the upcoming fight. Riqui catches wind of Erica’s plan to use Gabi as bait to draw out the monster and there is a tense exchange of words. Erica is unfazed by Riqui’s reaction and pushes the group forward.

The trio sets up camp at a ranch Riqui’s uncle watches over. During this time, Erica unveils the plan to stop the monster and unloads the story behind her and the Order. The fallout from this is impactful not only to Gabi and Riqui but to the reader as well. Are the pair ready to embrace the world of Erica Slaughter head on? Can they actually stop the monster and Cutter? Before there is time for answers, the final act kicks into gear throwing one definitive statement to the reader in closing: the one enemy they cannot defeat is time.

BREAKDOWN: Wrapping up this arc, Tynion delivers a strong understanding of where things are heading to. The book is essentially broken down into three portions. Cutter’s story kicks things off with showing readers how she reacts to being on the defensive with the theft of her doll. Seeing the emotional breakdown finally gave Erica a much needed win. That play into the second section with Erica’s story with Gabi and Riqui. Since her arrival in Tribulation, Erica has played much close to the vest. Seeing that she is not ready for what she’s up against, the breakdown of plans is crucial in Erica re-building her confidence along with preparing her allies for the frightening places they look to be heading to next. The third portion re-affirms how things are progressing and challenges how/if Erica is ready for the challenges. Pacing works to cap off the current arc along with setting up the violent showdown forthcoming.

Dell’edera and Muerto ramp up the drama within these pages. Right from the start, they present Cutter as being in control until the doll is taken. The full page panel crafts how truly unhinged she is as Cutter looses control in front of the remaining officers about her doll. The trio’s story is presented with various emotional moments. From Riqui’s warning to Erica only to be countered by Erica’s stone faced numbness, the trio varies as the events begin taking their toll on them. The Ranch sequence of panels gives readers a look at how Erica is handling the events at hand. Her reaction to telling the pair about what they’re involved in evokes a solid reaction as to the weight of the situations at hand. The final act caps off how time is of the essence and is something not in Ercia’s favor. Solid final full page panel to close this issue & arc out with.

For this entry, we have arrived at the pen-ultimate point in the sequel to the 2019 story involving two of the biggest fandoms in all of pop culture. Representing BOOM! Studios are the legendary MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS! Returning to join them for this adventure and hailing from the pages of IDW Publishing are the “Heroes in a Half Shell”, the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES. MMPR/TMNT II #4 by Ryan Parrott, Dan Mora, Raul Angulo and Ed Dukeshire has been an exciting ride with great twists and amazing creative takes mixed throughout. Going into the final moments, all bets are off on how this shapes up for the finale.

When these two forces meet the first time, their combined efforts defeated Shredder and Rita Repulsa. In the aftermath, Shredder was dropped off the radar. Casey Jones (longtime TMNT ally) hasn’t given up on finding his whereabouts although his plans have gone in a very different direction. Meanwhile, the Turtles are enjoying time away in Angel Grove (home of the Power Rangers) . There is no rest for the weary as the good guys are brought back into action when a jailbreak commences involving freeing Baxter Stockman (TMNT villain) by a rogues gallery led by Ranger X….who is revealed to be Casey Jones himself!

The heroes try to figure out the reasoning for their friend to jump sidelines but face an even bigger threat right at their doorstep….literally. Rita Repulsa has led an army to the Power Rangers Command Center! As the takeover commences, a new player enters the field: Shredder who is surprisingly helping the heroes (for his own personal reasons). They need all the help they can get when the Morphin Grid is compromised and drastic measures are taken to fight back. These actions lead to our heroes to make a dangerous call. The Turtles make a deal to work with Shredder to take the fight to Krang’s headquarters in Dimension X!

This issue kicks off with the reluctant partners making their way through the desolate Dimension X terrain to Krang’s headquarters. Readers bare witness to some great conversation between the Turtles and their greatest enemy. Hearing Shredder talk about his true driving motives was a moment not to be forgotten. Meanwhile back in Angel Grove, the Rangers (each using a hybrid mutagen - morphin coin) are taking the fight to Krang’s forces. Readers will be blown away by the action unfolding. Master Splinter is leading the team through the tough challenge ahead but there is more pressing issues waiting if they survive.

Krang and Rita Repulsa make their final plans inside what remains of the Command Center. Before getting to see that through, Rita does have one loose end to deal with and its’ one that will play some big implications in the finale. With victory in their grasp, what does this evil pair have in line for the finish? Will the Turtles push into Dimension X be all for nothing? Even with the fantastic moments involved in their mission hat nee to be seen to be believed, victory is far from guaranteed. The story ramps up to a fever pitch with readers left with their jaws dropped at the final page of this issue! No one is ready for that moment! No One!

BREAKDOWN: Parrott sets the players in place superbly heading into the finale issue. The banter between the Turtles and Shredder is a solid pace breaking moment which gives some great insight behind the Turtles greatest foe. He turns out to be the driving character of this issue with his actions in Dimension X. Being a reluctant hero in some sense makes readers connect with Shredder on a different level. Master Splinter leading the Mutated Rangers was another highlight that readers will enjoy reading. Seeing switch-ups like this has given the fandoms great memories to take with them after this series wraps up. Parrott once again puts on a clinic for juggling all these characters with excellent pacing. All the key players get their due and standout moments building for an explosive ending to this incredible sequel.

DAN. MORA. NUFF. SAID! Seriously, the energy pouring out of the action panels is unmatched. The two page spread with Splinter and the Mutated Rangers is absolutely mind-blowing. Every page keeps up a manic pace to never let the readers catch a moment. Mora’s version of Krang is unparallel. The details put into his suit make an impact . It compliments’ Rita’s deranged delight in what their plans are succeeding with. This shines thru when Rita is taking care of her loose end issue. A previously mentioned with Parrott, Mora gets in so many characters with his action panels that they feel bigger than the moment unfolding. The issue’s surprise moments continue to jump off the page but noting compares to the mic drop full page panel to conclude this issue’s events on.

FINAL POINT: The combined forces of two of pop culture’s biggest superhero teams are pushed to the brink with the fate of the world slipping thru their grasps. Parrott, Mora and the team craft a highly engaging issue with their phenomenal writing and energetic artwork. Every page feels like a massive event that only builds up the tension heading into a must-read finale. The series has been a priority pick-up each previous issue and that streak continues with the latest chapter!

DAMN THEM ALL #6 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the final issue of the first arc of BOOM! Studios breakout supernatural series. Right before this issue’s release, it was announced by BOOM! that this series has been officially certified into ongoing status! This is a huge win for fans of the adventures of Ellie Hawthorne, who has bursted onto the shelves at the local comic shop with one hell of a story to tell. In case you’re just learning about this series now, Ellie Hawthorne has been tasked with the mission her late uncle Alfie had: stop the 72 devils of the Ars Goetia and send them back to Hell by any means possible.

During this mission, Ellie has had a group of allies to help her quest, let by Dora, a former officer with a connection to Alfie. Having some back-up to fight some devilish foes never hurts, especially when they are like Theo Bolster and the 500 Club. Ellie defeated Theo in their initial face-to-face encounter via an impromptu exorcism. From there, Ellie and Co. have hit the ground running dealing with threats like Ninebob Barry and Theo’s personal devil: Glasya-Labolas in a fashion that’s all Ellie’s.

The biggest moment to date was at the end of last issue, where Ellie and Dora make contact with the spirit of Alfie Hawthorne and how he died. It has been one of the biggest mysteries of the season and gets answered in a manner that no one sees coming. Alfie wasn’t murdered as guessed. It appears at first glance, it was by suicide.

This issue picks up right in the middle of Alfie talking with Ellie and Dora. Alfie narrates how he was told he had only a year left and lived two. Alfie sought whatever and whoever he could to help his situation out. This meant mending fences with Theo and seeing what he could do to help. There wasn’t much as Alfie decided to end his life. Ellie sees some holes in Alfie’s story and begins to question it. Readers sit back and see Ellie rip into Alfie’s claims.

The resolution to this is one for the ages as Ellie demonstrates how much she has grown in the time of taking Alfie’s spot. It also shows that she has much left to do before her story ends. When another familiar face returns to hit Ellie on a personal level, readers will need to prepare for the worst. This causes a series of events to domino until there are a few characters in the final act walking out unscathed.

The first arc wraps up with a few surprises to end things on a high note. The Ars Goetia will still be a threat going into the next arc, but moves are being done on both sides cementing that this series has a lot more to finish. Excellent final act to tie everything together and set the stage for the next arc to come.

BREAKDOWN: Spurrier delivers on a solid reveal of the mystery of Alfie Hawthorne. It is one that most readers never saw coming but follows the blueprint set up with issue #1. Ellie Hawthorne comes across as every bit as stubborn and jaded as her uncle was. Their dynamic pays off huge as Alfie’s death has been a huge puzzle that had many levels to it. The fallout from the reveal carries into another emotional sequence involving a returning character that Ellie has had an awkward dealing with. The payoff from all of these moments hits readers with a simple panel showing the toll this has all taken on Ellie. Spurrier captures this moment perfectly and gives readers a small glimpse at the true Ellie. The pacing allows each major character to get their time in before saying good-bye for now. All that remains is building anticipation to the next chapter with a final panel that raises a few thoughts.

Adlard doesn’t miss in the delivery of the Ellie/Alfie confrontation. Very solid technique in keeping Alfie’s face in the shadows where readers never see his eyes. Ellie’s reactions featured her range of feelings that have been building since his passing. The imagery used in these moments convey a direct implication at how the usually unemotional lead character lets her guard down. This gets highlighted even more when Ellie’s next conflict transpires with a major surprise twist. The images never hold back from being brutal and bold. Adlard builds upon the writing capping everything with a final panel that is sure to have fans talking.

FINAL POINT: The saga of Ellie Hawthorne has only just begun but has given readers enough memorable moments, one would think it’s been around for years instead of only six issues. This is all due to the fantastic work of Spurrier, Adlard and the team creating a supernatural experience unlike anything else at the local comic shops out now. Damn Them All might be done for now, but like any great story, it’s not getting banished away fro long. In their wildest dreams, the heroes of Angel Grove could never imagine that one of their most legendary foes could become even more of a threat. Yet, that is exactly what has happened with Rita Repulsa who has now become Mistress Vile. Vile made an immediate impact when she dismantled Lord Zedd and left him lying at her feet in front of the young heroes to witness. Since then, Matt aka The Green Ranger has become Vile’s prisoner. Alpha-1 has pledged allegiance to Vile’s vision and challenged the Rangers. Factor in that Zedd is now recovering from his defeat and plotting revenge, the Rangers are surrounded by Vile’s efforts with no way out.

This issue opens up with a flashback of Rita and Zedd’s first encounter on Spearo V. Rita attacked Zedd on behalf of her father, Master Vile. During the battle Zedd throws Rita a proposition to join with him, seeing that she has outreached her father’s role for her.

Back at Safehaven, the Omega Rangers base, Both teams are having a conference call with Zordon and the earth based allies about what to do about Mistress Vile. In the conversation, it is deducted that Vile is looking for a way into the Morphin Grid but needs help doing it. The Rangers have some time to prepare knowing a Morphin Arch would be needed and one is revealed to be on Earth, which causes some tensions to be raised. Zordon orders the Power Rangers to return but not everyone is on board to comply to his orders.

The young heroes don’t even have an option to catch up and talk when suddenly Vile takes the fight right to their doorstep! How can they be ready for this surprise attack? It is a moment that readers will be excited to watch unfold. Even with a great cameo conversation and those huge action panels, nothing and I MEAN NOTHING will top what happens within the final moments of this issue and who is involved! It is a very safe bet to say that all of the Power Rangers fandom will be buzzing about the closing image from this issue.

BREAKDOWN: Just when you think this run has already given readers all the surprises it can handle, Flores drops a HUGE final moment that no one is ready for! No spoilers on that as it is one to be witnessed and not ruined. As for the rest of the issue, the writing demonstrates the growing frustration Vile is causing within the Rangers unit. There are great character moments involving Tommy and Kimberly reflecting this. The reveal about the Morphin master ruins furthered the wedge even more. Vile’s attack has left even the most confident members of the Rangers team nervous as to what is to come. Pacing worked well giving the story breaks to focus on character moments, one of which builds toward the concluding image that is going to leave fans speechless.

Di Gainfelice does a great job balancing out the Rangers’ struggles with Vile’s moves with excellent action sequences. The personal conversation involving Tommy respectively will connect with readers as a reflection of their feelings of recent events. It’s levels out with the battle at Safehaven. The action panels waste no time speeding things along, showing how quickly Vile’s forces are moving. The art caps everything off with a high-effective parting shot to send readers the message that the stakes just got higher involving this conflict.

FINAL POINT: The impressive debut run from the creative team of Flores and Di Gianfelice (along with Angulo and Dukeshire) grows its’ legacy even more with their latest issue. Superb writing and art turns up the pressure on the Power Ranger teams with an even more ominous danger looming in the wings at this issue’s conclusion. For this entry, we’re heading back to the afterlife with one of the biggest indie comics on the market today. The second story arc featuring Boom! Studios’ fan-favorite reaper continues to capture fans attention with more surprises and secrets looming on the horizon. Grim #9 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano jumps right into last issue’s cliffhanger ending and welcome readers to a new threat entering the fray. Let’s not wait another minute and jump right in to the latest chapter, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Living in Las Vegas should be an amazing time. Sadly, this is not the case for Jessica Harrow, a former reaper of the afterlife. After a routine soul guide mission goes wrong, Jessica finds herself crossing over into the land of the living and becoming the center of a bigger mystery that anyone realizes. This action leads Jessica and her friends Eddie and Marcel into a downward spiral pitting them in the line of fire of her aunt, Adira, who has her own reasons to keep Jessica away from finding the truth. Ultimately, Adira banishes Jessica and her friends into the land of the living in the aftermath of a battle between The End and Death himself (Jessica’s father).

Getting used to her new surroundings, Jessica tries enjoying a music festival but when people no longer can die and have a unique red marking on their foreheads, all signs point to Jessica being responsible. With Adira making moves to deal with Jessica, shes approached by the Sisters of Fate who have their own plan to fix things, none of which Jessica is on board with. When Jessica emerges from her meeting, she sees Marcel on his knees with a man and his ghost-esque giant Tiger behind him. Throw in the story of Jessica’s mother breaking of jail to find her daughter now and it’s a safe guess to whatever happens in Vegas isn’t staying in Vegas.

This issue opens up with Lilah, Jessica’s mother visiting a grave-site in Arizona. While there, she sees a hand emerge from the ground. Readers see that there is a possible connection to a red necklace she’s wearing, with a sense that it may have some powers radiating from it. The story then switches to Vegas where the city is filled with chaos and destruction. It is also noteworthy that the events here take place BEFORE the ending of issue #8. Eddie and Marcel are looking for Jessica when Annabel, a reaper approaches them. She questions the pair about Jessica’s involvement in Death’s demise and breaks down Adira’s plan to trap Jessica in Hell for eternity.

The pair are guided by Annabel into the first of eight gateways into Hell and encounter the being at the end of issue #8, with his giant tiger! Who is this mysterious figure? Why does he have a vested interest in Marcel? Readers don’t wait long to find out the secrets of Marcel and lead right into the ending of issue #8. Once Jessica arrives to meet them, the story of Marcel plays out. What won’t be expected is the ending point of this story. An action takes place that will impact Jessica moving forward while shaking things up before heading to this issue’s epilogue.

Phillips takes a small break from focusing on Jessica to showcase some of the other role players involved in this story. It’s an excellent way to see how dangerous of a foe the man with the tiger appears to be using Marcel’s story in such a unique fashion. Phillips also uses a creative method with the time jumps to not only establish Eddie and Marcel’s story but add an additional layer to last issue, giving readers a sense of how long she was gone with the Sisters of Fate. Pacing was great with structuring the stories of Lilah and Marcel with enough time to expand both with. Considering how many characters are featured, nothing felt lost in the shuffle and their stories never felt forced or out of place.

Flaviano’s depiction of a rioting Vegas immediately pops off the panels. The visuals play into the overall story of the second arc while not making it the center of attention. The introduction of the man and his tiger stands out as well, especially with the use of the coloring by Renzi. This shines with a panel having that person pop in and out of the shadows tormenting Marcel. The imagery is brooding and tragic and compliments the haunting writing. Flaviano gives readers an impactful punch in the feelings bringing the sad tale to the forefront. There is a great two page spread that perfectly sets up a full page visual to end that portion of the story. Lilah’s story also stands out being a change of pace to Jessica’s and adding more to her mysterious tale.

FINAL POINT: Grim #9 moves forward by showing readers how dangerous Jessica Harrow’s next obstacle is going to be thru the eyes of one of her friends. Excellent writing and artwork from Phillips, Flaviano and the team keeps the intrigue rising as new elements are mixed in with the overall themes lingering over the latest arc. It continues to be required reading on New Comic Book Day.

INFERNO GIRL RED: BOOK ONE #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re at the conclusion of a break-out series from comics most exciting line: The Massive-Verse from Image Comics via Black Market Narrative. INFERNO GIRL RED: BOOK ONE #3 by MAT GROOM (Power Rangers, Ultraman), ERICA D’URSO (The Mighty Valkyries), IGOR MONTI & BECCA CAREY brings to comic shops the conclusion of the introductory story of Cassia Costa. Breaking down the Kickstarter volume into three issues has been no easy task but the series has been winning over fans month after month since its’ initial release via Image. Last time readers saw Cassia, Apex City is still reeling from the attack of the Griffin while Cassia has one of her biggest fears unfold right before her eyes. How do things fare in this final installment of Book One? Let’s take a closer look and see how the latest series of the Massive-verse concludes its’ spectacular debut, shall we?

INFERNO GIRL RED: BOOK ONE #3

Going away to school was expected to be a life-changing event, but even Cassia Costa didn’t expect how fast things would change when she arrived at the Helix Campus. Being a new student at the prestigious school in Apex City carries enough weight, but becoming the surprising beacon of hope and the only line of defense against the Griffin might be too much to bare.

When danger struck as the Griffin caused the entire foundation of Apex City to rise, fate found Cassia in the form of a red object that activitied her fire inside becoming the hero INFERNO GIRL RED! With the assistance of her mother, Ana and her roommate Harriette, Cassia has faced down the Griffin’s forces until a showdown between them proved too much for Cassia to handle. Rebounding from the encounter, Cassia is lured out to face the threat while the Griffin kidnaps her mother, leaving Cassia is a state of sheer defeat.

This issue opens up with Harriette returning to their dorm room and seeing Cassia crying over the disappearance of her mother. Cassia opens up to Harriette about how her mother was on to the Griffin’s ways and she was disgraced to the point Cassia’s father left them both. Feeling truly alone, Harriette provides comfort and confidence standing by Cassia’s side during this time of need and reminding her what truly makes her a hero. The conversation results in Cassia revealing her superhero identity, which Harriette already deciphered.

The pair then discuss plans to stop the Griffin once and for all. With an assist from a fellow student, they find a location where a tremendous amount of power is being used. Cassia prepares to head to the location, ready to overcome the odds and be the hope that Apex City needs in this time of crisis.

At this stage, The Griffin addresses Cassia’s mother and his identity is revealed to the readers. Once Cassia arrives, the final showdown begins! Readers are ringside for a battle of the ages as Cassia goes toe-to-toe with an adversary who Cassia has no choice but to defeat with the lives of her mother and residents of Apex City hanging in the balance.

The conclusion doesn’t leave both combatants unscathed. It leaves readers filled with ranging emotions. Once the battle has passed, the final moments offer a satisfying conclusion to the inaugural chapter of the Massive-Verse’s latest hero.

BREAKDOWN: Groom leaves readers with an exciting ending to Cassia’s first solo story. At the core of this tale has been the concept of hope. It truly is Cassia’s super power. Once she believes that she can accomplish the impossible, Cassia proves that powers never made her a hero in the first place. Groom showcases Cassia as a determined character who faces her fears and doubts head-on. This portion of the story shows her growth in believing as she needs to find the fire inside her to push forward with the absence of her mother as her normal guide. This becomes even more apparent with the showdown with the Griffin. Having been previously defeated, Cassia needs to push herself beyond her fears know what failure could mean. The resolution of the battle magnifies how important it was to win and sends off Cassia’s world with a compelling good-bye (for now…)

D’Urso’s art amplifies the intensity of the final battle to incredible levels. The action panels hold readers’ attention and never lets go with its non-stop pacing. This has been a staple of this book since its’ inception. D’Urso brings a vibrant energy to the series which reflects the optimism and hope Cassia has (with much praise going to Monti & Carey to amplify these panels). D’Urso also brings out the deeply emotional elements of Cassia’s world. The moments she shares with her mother and Harriette show readers the power of self-belief can overcome insurmountable odds.

FINAL POINT: Groom, D’Urso and the team have not only made a highly enjoyable superhero story, Through their work, they’ve reminded comic readers what makes a hero isn’t the powers they have, but the fire inside that gives them the courageous drive to be heroic. The series is a must-add to your collection and you can’t leave the local comic shops this week without a copy.

One noteworthy showing was Aric guest appeared in the latest Mature readers rated BLOODSHOT: UNLEASHED series. Now 30 years after his debut, Valiant has lined up an incredible creative team to craft the latest tale. X-O MANOWAR UNCONQUERED #1 by BECKY CLOONAN, MICHAEL W. CONRAD, LIAM SHARP & TROY PETERI looks to present a challenge unlike any that Aric has faced before! Let’s not wait any longer and see what’s unfolding here, shall we?

X-O MANOWAR UNCONQUERED #1

Aric of Dacia has been a walking war machine since being introduced to readers 30 years ago in the debut of the Valiant Universe. After crossing paths with an alien race known as The Vine, Aric’s only chance to fight back and surviving was becoming one with a conscious armor known as Shanhara. Together, they are the powerful force known as X-O Manowar. Their escapades are the story of legend when talking about the Valiant Universe. Bloodshot might have a higher profile with some pop culture fans, but rest assured, there is only one franchise character of Valiant.

This story opens up with a voice narrating the latest battle involved with the heir to the Visigoth throne. Readers witness a brutal aftermath with X-O standing tall over his enemies. Those witnessing the scene are given a decree from both Shanhara and Aric. The message is clear: The next time one faces them both, they will be experiencing the wrath of X-O Manowar.

This frightens the onlooker who shifts her attention to present time. She sees X-O flying in space directly into the path of a comet heading straight towards Earth! The conversation between Shanhara and Aric shifts dramatically as Aric is preparing to die from this mission while Shanhara is saying how worthy Aric has been while downplaying his perceived future. At the moment of impact, Aric sees his life flash before his eyes. The explosion is huge and sends Aric spiraling.

From here, X-O crashes down on a new planet, questioning why Shanhara kept him alive. Shanhara explains the comet is more than what they thought. Aric assess the new surroundings and christens it “Scythia”. With a new home (for now), Aric looks to make the most of their time healing. However, the best laid plans are too good to be true. What of the onlookers spying on X-O? Is Scythia too good to be true? Readers get some new information before heading into a final act with a closing image to solidify Valiant’s armored gladiator has returned in epic fashion.

BREAKDOWN: Cloonan and Conrad play heavy into the strengths of Aric and Shanhara’s relationship. Aric comes across as challenging and unwavering while Shanhara plays into being the positive voice of reason to balance the pair out. This becomes apparent once the pair lands on Scythia. After seeing his life flash before his eyes, Aric isn’t so ready to head back to Earth while Shanhara presses him to focus on heading back and healing himself internally. The antagonists look to help Shanhara’ case as they present the spark needed to bring Aric out of his self-loathing. The story flows very well leading into it’s closing moments with an exclamation point liner to conclude the engaging debut of X-O Manowar’s latest adventrue.

Surprise to no one, Sharp’s art is bold, dramatic, and powerful. From the opening moments, the feel is set to the readers at how Aric’s current journey will enfold. The panel sequence dealing with the direct before and after the comet comes across as larger than life. There’s a great near-full page of a creature on Scythia that gives an instant danger to Aric. Moments like this give the story an extra shot of energy that any other artist might not hit as hard as Sharp did. The final panel plays into the weight of the last line delivered, finishing the initial chapter off with a strong flair.

The story of Mercy is a complex one to say the least. Being selected to fight monsters spawned from pure evil isn't something that happens every day. Four seasons later and Mercy's life hasn't slowed down since. This season has been a story on two fronts. Mercy’s allies, Ratmir and Jill Anderson, have been making plans while having a young girl named “Becky” in their care. Becky’s big secret is she’s a younger version of Mercy! Unfortunately, when they made a time jump after escaping a tight situation, they missed the mark and landed 20 years late and off course in 2007. That said, Jill has taken it upon herself to start actions that should have big ramifications later.

Meanwhile on the planet Tertiarus (& 65 years prior), a grown up Mercy and Tertiarus protector Alizarine have become entangled with space pirate Absolm Mooncrow while facing off with the Kroach. Alizarine makes a revelation of his connection with the Deathless and powers up Mercy and Mooncrow”s crew with infusing them with dangerous enegry. In its aftermath with the Harvester, The misfit group of warriors make a call to take down the infected Pantheon of Tertiarus before they make way to Earth and invade!

This issue opens up in Banbury, England 2007, where Ratmir and Anderson landed. It is at this moment, Mercy (of this time) sees Budgie, a fan-favorite ally, lying beaten in the backyard of her grandmother’s house. Puzzled by what has happened, Becky asks Budgie what happened.

At this moment, the story shifts to the capital of Tertiarus as Alizarine is leading the heroes into battle. The looming battle weighs on Alizarine, as his meddling caused the Pantheon’s initial downfall and might provide forgiveness for his actions. With a thunderous cry, the battle has begun. The action is high paced and with stakes this high, readers will be locked in to who’s left standing at the end.

Once inside the capital, Quinacridona and the Pantheon await Alizarine and his forces. It is as epic of a battle as readers should expect. There are many moments within these panels that give clarity to the mystery of Mercy. It is a small break in the action but plays a big part elevating the emotions running thru the characters. Choices are made that have dramatic repercussions for everyone on Tertiarus and Earth.

When the smoke clears, the resolution will completely change the course of events. No spoilers here but trust me, there are some events that readers will need to brace for. The epilogue ties both season four stories together and caps off a series that leaves a new status quo in its wake.

BREAKDOWN: Starkings delivers on a finale that lives up to the hype. The battle of Tertiarus never stops from having the energy of grave consequences for Mercy. Readers can instantly connect with the pressure to secure victory at all costs. How events play out is a great bonus to where the story moved. It’s not a happy ending in the traditional sense. The main characters involved on Tertiarus all make difficult choices for their causes. Starkings makes this finale a tragic tale in some sense but one wrapped in hope for the future in the franchise.

The visuals done by Harding gives the finale a strong aura for its conclusion. There are a few full panel pages that put a huge statement on the drama unfolding in those moments. Alizarine leading the charge into the Tertiarus capital is a defining example of this. Those moments stand out as key points of the story. These are balanced out by the emotional reactions to the events of the battle. At no point did the battle stray from delivering on its major points. The epilogue featured more reaction based images but played into capping things off for this stage of Mercy and her story.

FINAL POINT: Stakings and Harding pull out all the stops for the finale of Ask For Mercy season four. The storytelling and imagery gives readers a legendary conclusion of the battle for Tertiarus with high-paced action and heartbreaking fallout. When it was all said and done, the Circle of Time made for an captivating story that comic readers need to check out.

BLACK CLOAK #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the mystery grows deeper for Detective Phaedra Essex in the pages of Image Comics’ new hit series. Black Cloak by Kelly Thompson, Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey has been an excellent read thus far combing elements of true crime and fantasy. It immediately went back to print due to overwhelming fan support. The layers behind the death of the heir apparent to the throne of Kiros have slowly started their reveal. After last issue’s conclusion, tensions are running high, putting the city on edge. Let’s see where the latest chapter takes us, shall we?

Black Cloak #3

The mystery surrounding Black Cloak centers around the death of Freyal III of Sidra. He was found dead inside an apartment in a questionable part of Kiros known as the Narrows. Being part of Kiros’s Elf royal family, this death has garnered wide-spread attention. If that wasn’t enough, there are two other deaths possibly connected to this case. Now tasked to solve this case are Black Cloaks (Kiros Law Enforcement) Phaedra Essex and Pax. Their journey to solve this case and keep Kiros (the last city in the known world) from the brink of chaos has been challenging to say the least. Factor in Phaedra’s personal connection to Freyal and things have become dangerous. From interviewing potential suspects to meeting with the Queen herself, Phaedra has become a target. There have been multiple attempts to kill Phaedra but that hasn’t slowed her and Pax down from trying to solve the case.

Last we saw Phaedra, she returned to her apartment with the Kiros Three waiting for her. They are considered the most powerful Humans in Kiros. Knowing that Freyal’s death now could cause an enormous power shift from Elves to Humans, Phaedra’s guard is up for their true motives. They give Phaedra a possible break in the case which sends her rushing out to meet up with Pax on figuring out their next move with the new information.

his issue kicks off with Phaedra making her way through “The Trees”, a section of Kiros. The residents all cower away seeing a Black Cloak wandering the streets. She makes her way to meet Pax at a local establishment to form their plans. Phaedra talks about a place where Freyal might have left a message. Pax begins pleading with Phaedra to open up about what she knows since she has been keeping things from him. When Phaedra finally mentions a few clues, Pax is shocked to hear who gave the latest lead, realizing what that could mean. Pax and Phaedra discuss the Kiros Three’s plea of innocence and how they’re shifting blame to the Dracona, whose unique blades have been used in attacks on Phaedra.

The pair take off to check out a hidden location of Phaedra and Freyal’s past. What they find there is a message left that no one will be suspecting. What is left at the magical hiding spot? How is the case impacted moving forward? Readers witness how this sequence sends the pair into the path of someone whose words impact Phaedra to gamble on the future of the case heading into the issue’s final moments.

Black Cloak #3

BREAKDOWN: Thompson presents a strong pull on Phaedra’s relationships in this issue. The first time involves the distance Pax notices in revolving around the case. It plays in presenting how distracted Phaedra might be with her heavily emotional tie to Freyal. The second and arguably biggest one is her reaction to what she finds in the magical hiding spot. Thompson crafts that sequence where it doesn’t only impact Phaedra but leaves readers with a somber reaction. The final one is the latest person of interest. The conversation becomes a driver for the next stage in the case but gives perspective that the world of Krios isn’t as cut and dry as it seems. All three of these sequences tie together brilliantly to move the story forward.

McClaren and Carey bring the fantasy world to life with vivid imagery. The initial opening pages showcases the various residents of the Trees and gives this section of Kiros its’ on unqiue feel. It’s a strength to the art team on giving each area a distinct energy which plays perfectly off the writing. The back and forth between Phaedra and Pax demonstrates the partner’s longtime connection while featuring how this case is ultimately wearing on them. The best example is after they hear what’s left for them at the hiding spot. Phaedra and Pax don’t hide their feeling in a brief panel, but one that stands out for their facial reactions. The final moments are capped off by an excellent one page ending panel to take readers on the next stage of the mystery.

FINAL POINT: Black Cloak continues to push forward with its’ detailed fantasy mystery that needs to be a main-stay on all comic readers pull lists. House of Slaughter is an anthology series, having self-contained stories involving characters set in the SIKTC Universe. In this recent arc, Jace Boucher’s life post monster hunting hasn’t gone exactly the way he envisioned. As seen in the first HoS arc, Jace’s doomed love with Aaron Slaughter still weighs heavy on him (even without knowing Aaron’s fate). Jace has assumed the role of protector for orphans and is laying low off the radar, hoping to escape his past. This proves to be a lost cause Sunny, one of the orphans, wants to follow in the hunter footsteps of Jace. When he’s told not to, Sunny becomes rebellious and leaves the camp set up for Jace and the orphans. When a monster comes across Sunny, he is rescues by a person with history with Jace: Jolie Boucher.

During the rescue, Jolie is trying to sell Sunny the dream of being a hunter. Jolie mentions that the monster they encountered has more baby creatures lying around and she takes Sunny under her wing and brings him along for a hunt with her house. Sunny becomes mesmerized by what he sees and is invited for dinner at her mansion home, “The Butcher Shop”. All the while, Jace is tying to track Sunny down while dealing with some unsettling visions and dreams. Once he sees Sunny leave with Jolie, Jace realizes the stakes have become even higher.

This issue kicks off with a flashback sequence as Jace prepares to return to New Orleans in search of Jolie and Sunny. The moment switches to when Sunny walks into the mansion (due to Jolie manipulating the young boy). Once inside, Sunny sees some of the house residents such as Rene and Vionette Boucher. SIKTC readers will recognize a certain hunter roaming the halls as well Maxine Slaughter! The last time readers had seen Maxine, she was making a big move in the pages of the “Book Of Slaughter” one-shot, which is a great reference point for new readers to the SIKTC world. With Sunny invested in meeting the people of the house, Jolie convinces him that she will take him back to Jace’s camp in the morning.

Meanwhile, Jace is making his way through New Orleans when he has a flashback to a childhood moment with Jolie. This has been an ongoing plot point since the story arc began. This recent memory is interrupted by a raven, which Jace recognizes and quickly runs toward. The bird leads him to a mysterious character named Maven, who warns Jace of what’s ahead. Will the warning be enough? Is Jace ready for what he is about to encounter? Readers will get some clarity with those questions but will have to brace for what is in store for Sunny living in a house full of hunters with a strong final act in this issue to conclude this issue on.

BREAKDOWN: Brombal keeps readers guessing as to what Jolie’s overall plan is for Sunny. Considering their history, it makes perfect sense to hurt Jace by stealing away one of his children and having them join the life he has been so desperate to escape. The influence of giving the young boy his dream is easy for Jolie to use to her advantage. Jace knows this and risks everything to try stopping it. Seeing Maven and their conversation adds more drama to the upcoming moves. It’s low-key but readers can sense the doubt in Jace’s voice heading into the inevitable confrontation. Pacing worked well in giving enough time to set up the stage for the final act. The flashback/dream sequences were used less than the previous issues but this method helped keeping things moving without taking away from Jolie and Sunny’s spotlight. The final moments will be interesting to see the fallout next issue, but left a satisfying conclusion for this chapter.

Fuso focused on displaying “The Butcher Shop” as a warm and friendly place while hiding most of its secrets. This plays well int Jolie’s schemes as her subtle smirks conceal what she has in store for Sunny. Seeing the interactions with the other residents especially with the cameo from Maxine helps break up some tension before shifting back to Jolie and Jace. Jace’s flashbacks and ultimate interruption set things up nicely for his portion of the issue. Excellent full page panel to cap off the Maven sequence. The final act moved fast with Sunny but illustrated the situation he’s in and what lies ahead. It concluded the scheming of Jolie, giving fans much to be excited to see where the story goes next issue.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of one of the most high-profile Kickstarter books in recent memory which has been released to the local comic shops via Boom! Studios. Considering who is the mastermind behind it, there’s no question why it’s getting the (rightfully deserved) attention it is. BRZRKR #12 by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, Ron Garney and Bill Crabtree for Boom Studios brings to close (in this format) the saga of B, half man, half god, all 100% walking violence. The story has been a brutal journey thru the eyes of an immortal who’s seen enough and looking for a way out. With the events of last issue, all bets are off as to where B’s story concludes for now.

Before we get started with the review, the images featured here may be too violent and graphic for younger readers. Viewing discretion is advised. That said, if you’re still good to go, let’s get the review started, shall we?

The story of B (aka Unute) has been drenched in mystery and violence for decades. In present day, B has aligned himself with the US Government as a human demolition derby for some of their most highly dangerous missions. B’s payment has been assistance in finding a way to end his immortal life. Dr. Caudwell has been supervising B’s missions in a way to cover up his own devious interest in B. Meanwhile Dr. Diana Ahuja has been B’s only ally throughout this period.

At last we witnessed B, Caudwell was going to a possible location with secrets to possibl end B’s life. Meanwhile, B had just traveled thru his own existence, making a connection with Diana in the form of a massive blast of energy. Witnessing this latest action, Caudwell finally enacts his master scheme of stealing B’s power. Caudwell siphons the energy from a magical bird impaling B for his energy. If not for Diana, B would truly be dead. Instead, an apparently mortal B and Diana now need to face a powered Caudwell, who has emgered from a chamber crackling with energy. The final battle appears to be at hand.

This issue kicks off with Caudwell and his cult followers facing off with the government forces. B and Diana head into battle with Diana being the super-powered being of the pair now. When B is injured in the fight, Diana steps up and brutally handles Caudwell in a scene that isn’t meant for the squeamish. With Caudwell handled, the pair escape with Keever, a soldier who has been partners with B for many missions. Tying up loose ends, Keever gives the order to wipe everything away. The escaped is shadwoed by bomber jets unloading an arsenal on everything in the battle location.

The lives and B and Diana is changed forever in a way that readers will be intrigued to see play out. Life doesn’t return to normal as B and Diana are considered loose ends that need to be wrapped up in the same way of wiping Caudwell’s secrets off the map. Their manner of handling that aspect leads them to a new status quo but not one without problems.

The conclusion of the story is one that has many layers to it. There is a definite answer to questions that have lingered since the start of the series. There are also some new directions left open to travel down with a few plot points kept open-ended by the final page. Readers will have much to talk about following this finale as it’s a safe bet they haven’t seen the last of this franchise in comic form.

BREAKDOWN: Reeves and Kindt deliver on a big action finale to the present story while leaving the door open to return should they decide to return. The issue opens up big with tremendous action. The battle with Diana and Caudwell serves its purpose and drops a thunderous close to that plot-line. Post fight is where they move things into uncharted territory. Both B and Diana have to face an unclear future with a huge change in plans for both. It is a huge game-changer that needs to be unspoiled, but once created, takes the story into a very poignant direction moving forward. The writing adds many levels to the final moments which tie certain plots together nicely. Certain elements become full circle. They also pace things out to where the issue feels as a “so long for now” instead of a full “good bye”. It’s not a bad thing but one that will keep readers guessing as to where events move from here.

Garney brings the same intensity to the fighting that this series has become known for. The panels with Diana facing off against Caudwell are as in your face as they come. The damage inflicted holds little back to readers. It sets an early tone that is revisted later when more fighting ensues. B’s life has been centered around conflict and fighting since its’ beginning. The imagery wastes no time in reflecting that, even in more individual standoffs (one especially noteworthy with Keever). Garney levels this off with more emotional moments with Diana and B’s new direction. Without revealing too much, their lives become more complicated after Caudwell’s apparent demise. The reactions to the domino-like effect shines thru leading to a lasting parting shot with many questions coming from it.

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out one of the biggest events/series to debut in 2023. “The Massive-Verse”, the home of comic’s most exciting universe, has been setting an extremely high standard in creativity and storytelling since expanding its’ roster following 2022’s “SuperMassive” crossover. With successful debuts for characters such as Rogue Sun, The Dead Lucky and Inferno Girl Red (to name a few), fans have waiting with heightened anticipation to see how this growing roster would shape up in the new year. With announcements such as “The Catalyst War” coming in RADIANT BLACK & “SuperMassive 2” dropping in May, the buzz around this line has grown to a fever pitch. Before we get to those events, there’s one series/event leading the way that is going to set the pace for those events. How they’re presenting this is such a breath of innovative fresh air that simply can’t be ignored or passed on.

NO/ONE #1 by Kyle Higgins (RADIANT BLACK), Brian Buccellato (Detective Comics), Geraldo Borges & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou welcomes a new character into the ranks of the Massive-verse with an explosive debut that doesn’t stay just in the pages of the comic. The 10 issue maxi-series continues the story via the companion podcast “Who Is No/One” starring Rachael Leigh Cook & Patton Oswalt as the reporters trying to solve the mystery behind the vigilante running around Pittsburgh. This is such an imaginative idea to accompany the comic, but considering what Higgins and company have done with QR codes leading to animated shorts, gatefold issues (see Radiant Black #18) and so forth, it is another reason that the Massive-Verse stands out from the rest on the comic shelves each time out.

The wait is finally over! No/One hits comic shops this week (March 15th)! Let’s see what this Image Comics/Black Market Narrative debut issue is all about, shall we?

NO/ONE #1

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The book opens up in the Cultural District of Pittsburgh for an art exhibit. A couple is conversing about the pieces along with referencing murders running rampant through the city. They end the conversation to get some alone time on a rooftop balcony but are interrupted with the discovery of a dead man named Louis Capel with four bullet holes in his chest. Meanwhile standing across the building on a rooftop looking down is the mysterious vigilante No/One.

At the crime scene, Detectives August Singh and Kate Harper are investigating the scene. They are two detectives assigned to the case of Richard Roe aka “The Accountability Killer” and his copycats. The mystery of Roe has been hunting Pittsburgh since his first known video comments in May of 2022. Now nearly a year later, the toll its taken on the detectives is clearly visible to the readers. Singh is venting openly how done he is with everything Roe, this being the allegedly third copycat killing. Singh’s rant in interrupted by Pittsburgh assistant chief Ben Kern, who’s got a vested interest in the case. Kern is handed a note found on the victim. Before he can react, Chief Mixon calls in to have Kern removed from the scene.

Outside the building, a mob of frightened and angry citizens have arrived to find out what has happened. One of which being Pittsburgh Ledger reporter Julia Paige, who’s digging into the case herself. Readers don’t wait long to find a clue of who Assistant Chief Kern has a deeper investment in this case as the mob starts shouting at him about his son.

The following Day, Singh and Harper are talking with Capel’s family concerning the murder. The conversation is very emotionally charged (as expected) but readers find out that Capel was a digital target of No/One previously. However, there is someone watching the events unfold from a distance. Meanwhile, at the Pittsburgh Ledger, Editor Teddy Barlow has made the call to put Julia on a podcast breaking down the Richard Roe case since the public is visiting the main webpage in record numbers.

No/One’s shadow weighs heavy on the public but arguably Ben Kern carries the full baggage. Readers see two very important conversations: One involving his son Michael (who’s battling his own personal demons) at Neomi Kern’s grave. The other is at the Allegheny County Jail to see Aaron Kern, who is also known as Richard Roe, the accountability killer!

What is said during these conversations that pulls Kern into a new direction trying to solve the case? After leaving the jail, an action happens that raises more questions to an already complex case! Readers will not be ready for what transpires there, but just wait for the final few pages. Within those moments, the drama has been turned up anther notch building towards a shattering final image that will leave readers shocked and excited to get the next issue in their hands immediately.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Buccellato weave a multi-layered mystery within the initial debut. Richard Roe’s impact has been felt for almost a full calendar year (the timeline of events is featured at the end of the book with a great character index & details about Aaron Kern) and the writing reflects the frustration of the citizens of Pittsburgh while slowly unveiling the man behind the mask. The pacing breaks down the large cast into three focused areas. Singh and Harper’s panel time reflects the citizens with the anger and anxiety Roe’s actions have caused. Paige’s story feels as it will be told thru the eyes of the reader as she sets forth to present the details of the case with a “reasonable voice.”

Their stories take a step back in comparison to the tale of the Kern family. Higgins and Buccellato portray Ben Kern as a conflicted character balancing his fatherly duties to his civic duties as an officer. Kern’s struggles shine with the conversations with his son. Both have a different tempo and distinct endings. It makes for what follows that much more greater. The final set-up of the last pages are exceptionally placed to add a building tension to its’ jaw-dropping conclusion.

Borges wastes no time in bringing the strong reactions of “No/One’s” actions to the readers. There is a full page panel showing Capel’s demise that pulls no punches (including the couples reaction). It’s matched with a fantastic two-page spread with No/One standing over the rooftop watching. Borges captures the strain and wear Roe’s actions have taken on the detectives and the people of Pittsburgh. This comes right to the forefront when Singh & Harper talk with Capel’s family. There is a great action moment sprinkled in the story which is incredible and sets up a great twist but this issues emotional builds are what will have people talking. Borges uses a multi-panel format (7-9) which echos a “Watchmen” feel in bringing Ben Kern’s drama with his sons to the readers. The perfect example is this technique is the final pages of the book which concludes with an exclamation point final image.

FINAL POINT: The latest entry into the Massive-Verse establishes itself as a must-read mystery that simply can not be missed. Higgins, Buccellato, Borges & the team present a city on edge with an enigmatic figure at the center of it’s breaking point. Phenomenal writing and imagery set the stage for not just a book, but an event that comic fans can’t afford to miss and the local comic shops and in podcast form with “Who is No/One.”

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new debut on the Comixology Originals line that flips the traditional ghost story blueprint into a whole different direction. What happens when someone can not only see ghosts BUT fight them back? Grammaton Punch #1 by Miles Gunter (NYC Mech, Terminator, BPRD), Briane Andan, Lee Loughridge, Taylor Esposito, Dee Cunniffe and Ed Dukeshire introduces readers to Van Nguyen and his unique ability. Get settled in as we’re about to take a closer look at where one boy’s fight against the paranormal goes in this introductory issue. Let’s begin, shall we?

The issue opens up with Van Nguyen narrating his backstory. Readers witness a solar eclipse which Van states being born during isn’t all that great. As Van is in his mother (a power lifter) ’s stroller, a one-eyed ghost appears and makes a connection with him. Van tells the audience that being an “eclipse baby”, he can now see ghosts and vice versa. Van became a power source for the ghost as it ate off his life energy for five years.

During that time, Van was in and out of the hospital, left very weakened from the feedings. Doctors ran many tests but the only result that they could find was an anomaly with Van’s eyes. The ghost’s attacks also turned Van’s hair white. Being only Five years old, Van looked as he was going to be facing this problem for the rest of his life. Everything changed when Van unlocked a key factor involving the ghost: If it could physically touch him, Van could physically fight it back!

At this moment, Readers see him defend himself for the first time. Van hits the ghost with a right hand that Mike Tyson would be proud of. With the ghost seemingly gone, Van finally began had a chance at a healthy life and with prescription sunglasses hiding his gifts. It seemed short lived as “Eye Face” returned, but Van was ready and disposed of his foe again…and again…and again. Each time, “Eye face” took longer to return but Van was waiting and stronger than the last encounter.

Things seemed to becoming normal as Van accompanies his mother to a power-lift competition, until something happens that changes everything. What went down at the lift? Is Van ready to face what lies ahead? Readers bare witness to a growing child’s dilemma of trying to live a “normal” life with unique gifts. Things move pretty fast with some more obstacles piling up before the final image throws a big question mark on the debut issue heading into the next chapter.

BREAKDOWN: Gunter sets up the foundation for a very imaginative story. Van’s saga catches readers off the start with presenting the toll “eye Face” is taking on him and his mother. The pacing builds to such a point that readers can feel the moment when he first punches “Eye Face” out of town. It’s an enjoyable section that takes the story into a new direction. Van is a whimsical lead that grows up fast with the challenges thrown his way. The latter half of the issue demonstrates how Van’s journey isn’t so cut and dry. Van’s impulsiveness makes complete sense considering his age at this placement in story. Heading into the concluding moments, Gunter does a great surprise setting the stage for the next installment.

Andan brings a high energy to the panels artwork. There is a My Hero Academia-esque feel to when Van starts fighting back. Those panels convey the changing of story tempo. No page illustrates that more than when Van realizes he can hit “Eye Face” back. Speaking of “Eye Face”, Andan envisions the ghost as a true imposing figure, especially one that is tormenting a five-year old. It’s counter balanced when Van grows confidence in battling back. The issue never feels like there is a lull in-between panels. Van’s world is one to easily hit with readers a the series moves onward.

FINAL POINT: “With Great Power, One must have a Great Punch!” Gunter, Andan and the team establish a young hero with solid storytelling and electric imagery. Grammaton Punch #1 will be a hit with readers looking for something that stands on its own with many themes mixed in the overall narrative.
