The story opens up with a map of Athea, breaking down the important areas of the land. Excellent way to introduce the new landscape to readers with definitive points of interest to keep eyes on.

The banter is confrontational amongst the council known as the Council Of Might. The reactions are very different in deciding on the young woman’s punishment. Whisper is led in via chains to face the group. Readers see there is a voice talking with her and seems to have an influence on what has transpired. In a fit of rage, Whipser (also known as Paladin Stoneheart) breaks free but is subdued quickly. With this latest action, the council makes their decision and exile Stoneheart from the kingdom!

A man walks up and appears to mindwipe her thoughts, resulting in her waking up in a carriage heading towards the Lightspring Canyon of Etrana Kingdom in Athea. BREAKDOWN: Kubert is writing and drawing this series, presenting fans with a captivating tale with a lead character’s secret as the driving point. For being a debut issue, Kubert take the time to introduce all the major players with caption boxes, noting their ages as well. This plays into the council’s decision to exile Whisper out of the Estron Kingdom. Readers see the differences of the elders versus the younger members factoring in the choice of punishment. Once the story shifts to the LightSpring Canyon, Kubert spends a solid amount of time to forge the beginning friendship between Whisper and the local Blacksmith which makes the events of the final act much more impactful. Pacing works well to move the story forward without tipping off too much. The conclusion ends things with a unique style cliffhanger but one work to add more questions going to the next issue. It’s an excellent way to have readers interest spiking even more from this debut issue.

The art reflects the mystical backdrop to this story. Great use of the black and white coloring for the Estron Kingdom moments while establishing the voices with the turquoise and red color blocks for the voices. Once the story moves locations and goes to full color, Kubert brings to life a vibrant energy reflecting Whisper’s endless positivity. Her reactions to the events happening made a connection with the readers. The new landscape has a certain charm to it with its’ various residents making it noteworthy. Even with all the world building, there are some excellent action scenes which play into a bigger role heading to the final act. Speaking of that act, things move pretty quickly but Kubert never lets the emotions slide as the events unfold. Readers won’t be disappointed with how things conclude as they’re left with much to ponder with anticipation as this fantasy tale is only beginning to start its’ journey.

Leading into year two & being featured in a prominent event with SuperMassive 2, this superhero saga has fans looking forward to a big 2023. However, Dylan’s got some unsettled business with a brand new threat to deal with before closing off its’ second arc next issue.

ROGUE SUN #11 by Ryan Parrott, Abel, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey (editor Michael Busittil) brings the latest chapter with the mysterious Hellbent. Being pushed to his limits, let’s take a closer look and see how Dylan is handling a threat unlike any he’s faced before, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

After the death of his father, Dylan Siegel is passed down the mantle and powers of Rogue Sun, the supernatural protector of Earth. Since that life-changing moment, Dylan has had a rough road learning to become a hero while balancing out a “normal” life with a new family he knew nothing about prior. Factor maneuvering through high school and Dylan has his hands full. Readers have watched him face dangers head on, even taking a deep personal toll on him. With everything he’s been through, his current challenge might be his most dangerous (and it’s not an upcoming Homecoming high school dance either).

A villain driven on revenge for what Dylan did involving his father, Hunter aka Hellbent made a deal with a powerful and dangerous entity which has ties to his father: Mourningstar. From their initial encounter, Hellbent left Dylan for dead. Trying to fight back against a villain who nearly killed him is going to a tough ask for the young hero by himself. Luckily, Dylan has a new mentor in the form of Caleb Hawthorne, the KNIGHT SUN! After being summoned by Dylan’s step-sister Aurie, Caleb has filled in a void Dylan needed desperately. With one shot to take a magical Quill out of Hellbent (and his boss’s reach), Dylan takes a trip on the wild side to the realm of the Ravyn Queen.

This issue picks up where Dylan and Caleb are meeting with the Rayvn Queen in her Aviary realm about the history of the Quill. Readers get an excellent breakdown of how the magical creature was wiped out from existence and the only remnant was the powerful feather. Dylan pleads his case to the queen but it’s getting the feather that easily. He’s tested to challenge her imposing protector of the Aviary in combat. Should he survive, Dylan gets the feather. Failure means dire consequences. Against his council’s wishes, Dylan accepts.

Meanwhile back in New Orleans, Hellbent is growing his influence by pushing drug dealers to expand their coverage with him providing protection for a cost. Hellbent’s actions haven’t set well with his father and now draws the attention of Mourningstar. Hellbent diverts his plans for now, recommitting to taking care of Rogue Sun. All the while, the homecoming dance is unfolding at Dylan’s school. Dylan wasn’t planning on attending but now his dance card is full. Can he survive the Doorman to acquire the Quill? Is this enough to stop Hellbent and Mourningstar? At what lengths are the villains willing to go to get what they want. Readers don’t wait long as the final act sets things in motion for what can only be a showdown for the ages that in inexcusable to miss!

BREAKDOWN: Parrott juggles many elements of this issue with ease building towards a monster conclusion. The Ravyn Queen panels showcase the growing pains of Dylan and Caleb’s new partnership while trying to find a way to stay on the mission at hand. The banter between all three is solid and even drops a few great one-liners in the mix. It’s resolution works and gives this issue some great action points while unearthing more about Rogue Sun’s potential (as Dylan is still learning what he can do with his power). There is a big moment where this comes to life that readers will be excited to see. There’s a conversation later in the issue between Dylan and Caleb that ties this current arc together perfectly reflecting on fathers and son. Hellbent and the dance attendees maximizes their respected time in this issue with noteworthy scenes. The final moments of this issue cap everything off perfectly leaving readers on the edge of their seats for next issue.

Abel returns to Rogue Sun after being off the last two issues with a strong return. The Aviary realm display had a great look to make it pop off the page. Readers will have no question where they are in that portion of the story. The confrontation with the Doorman played out with some fantastic moments, and one new element featured in Rogue Sun’s arsenal that will have a huge positive reaction amongst the fans. The panels involving Hellbent’s father showed off excellent emotional reactions to the events unfolding. It ties everything back to how this all began with the father and son narrative which plays such a huge role for this series. Incredible mic drop moment with the final panel to send readers into the arc finale next issue.

FINAL POINT: Abel reunites with Parrott and the team to bring the Hellbent arc to a boiling point with this issue. Readers will be locked in from the start with fantastic storytelling and art which has become this series’ calling card since its’ debut one year ago. Rogue Sun has never had the stakes set higher if he fails and readers simply can’t leave the comic shops this week without this issue in hand.

BUFFY THE LAST VAMPIRE SLAYER SPECIAL #1 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a one-shot from Boom! Studios featuring a familiar name in the land of pop culture. If you grew up in the 90’s-early 2000’s, you are guaranteed to have heard the name of “Buffy” and immediately connected it with “Vampire Slayer”. From the initial movie in 1992 featuring Kristy Swanson in the title role to the memorable WB (pre-CW) show from 1997-2003 starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, the character has remained in the pop culture eye with no signs of slowing down via the various Buffy universe stories coming from Boom! Studios. One of those stories is Buffy The Last Vampire Slayer Special #1 by Casey Gilly, Joe Jaro, Maria Keane, Lea Caballero, Joana Lafuente and Ed Dukeshire. Let’s take a closer look at this special and see what unfolds, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story is set in London of an alternate future where Buffy Summers was the last Vampire Slayer until Thessaly, the daughter of Tara and Willow has now been chosen to become a slayer. Becoming a guardian over the new slayer (with help from Spike, a vampire and lover in this timeline, an older and wiser Buffy has now made it her mission to train Thessaly for her destined future. Excellent job by Boom! to write in the quick 101 paragraph to catch new readers up to speed on this series.

This story kicks off with Spike working with Thessaly on sharpening her skills. The banter is easy to connect as the rebellious teenager isn’t too keen on listening to elder advice. Thessaly is more focused on meeting up with Iris, her girlfriend. All the while, Buffy is working with Wren and Anya of the Watcher’s council on a possible lead on finding an old friend in the United States! What does this lead have to do with Thessaly? Can the new slayer handle the responsibility of the mantle? Will the team survive each other long enough to solve this mystery? Readers get taken on a fun adventure that mixed with great surprises along with “family” drama closing with a promising ending.

BREAKDOWN: Gilly builds an enjoyable tale focusing on the “family” dynamic of Thessaly, Spike and Buffy. With a new slayer to train, Buffy tries balancing being a supportive maternal figure with being tough on training Thessaly for the dangers to come. Thessaly is a “normal” teenager with her interactions. Seeing how she’s learning control of her abilities will stand out to readers. Solid reveals heading into the latter portion of the story. The final moments concludes with an interesting ending that I’m sure readers won’t see the last of this universe in the future.

Multiple artists on this book kept things moving at a solid pace. Thessaly’s powers stood out as big events when used in those panels. The quieter scenes with Buffy and Thessaly helped connect readers to the building of their bond which progresses as the issue goes on. Once the biggest reveal happens, it comes across as a huge deal and one that readers will immediately see a shift in the story. The final pages tie up loose ends before sending the characters off with some great personal moments.

PHANTOM ROAD #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, an Eisner nominated creative team reunite for Image Comics with a brand new series that will have fans talking on New Comic Book Day! PHANTOM ROAD #1 by Jeff Lemire and Gabriel H. Walta, the team behind Sentient, link up with Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands hits the open road with a driver who’s life spins out of control after helping someone on the side of a highway. Let’s take a closer look at this debut issue, shall we?

PHANTOM ROAD #1

Creative: Jeff Lemire, Gabriel H. Walta, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands

Credit: Image Comics

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins with a driver named Dom screaming at someone in his tractor-trailer to let him in, fearing for his life! With the door locked, Dom looks right at the reader with sheer terror in his eyes.

From here, the story shifts gears to an earlier time where Dom is driving down the highway at night. Things seem to be a routine drive. Dome pulls in to a rest stop diner for a quick meal and coffee. Dom sparks a conversation with the waitress about how he’s almost at his destination of North Dakota and they both close with “We’ll get there.”

Hitting the road again, Dom starts flashing back to his childhood and a rough moment between his parents fighting. His mother is angry at what his dad (a truck driver as well…like Father, like Son) has been doing while driving and neglecting his son. The dad counters with questions about the mother before leaving for a new job, promising Dom a new toy when he comes home.

When Dom focuses back on the road, he swerves out of the way of a car accident. With a body lying in the road, he finds Birdie sitting against the car with an object that caused Birdie to swerve in the road. With Birdie talking frantically, Dom goes to see the object. When he touches it, a green flash happens and they’re now in daylight with a mysterious figure in the distance.

Who is this figure? What was the object and what effect does it have Dom and Birdie? Are the pair even where they think they are? Things escalate quickly as the pair is thrown into a situation neither is ready for. The final panel will have readers waiting to see what happens next for the pair as their story has just begun.

PHANTOM ROAD #1

Credit: Image Comics

BREAKDOWN: Lemire lays the foundation of a very engaging story. From the offset, Dom’s life is very routine in the sense of his job. The flashback moment with his parents is significant as it gives readers a glimpse of how Dom became set on this profession much like his father. Whether there is a connection to recent events or not remains to be seen as the story just shifted locations. The dynamic with Birdie was a strong point of the issue as well. Both are now connected and need each other to survive. The mystery of the artifact set the tempo for the final act with a great horror element before closing this chapter out.

Walta and Bellaire do a superb job bringing the (literal) day and night difference in Dom’s life to readers throughout these pages. The beginning of the issue is very relatable to readers and hits the emotional points when dealing with the family flashback. The panels where Dom sees himself and his dad at separate times while driving also jumps out. Great use of colors (Red lighting for the accident, Green for the crossover) to seq-way the story’s changes. Strong build throughout the final portion to capture the horror energy before closing with the near full page final panel.

RADIANT BLACK #22 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to a brand new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are now on the road to the Catalyst War with the Massive-verse’s flagship title. As it was announced this past week, RADIANT BLACK has a HUGE storyline starting at issue #25 which if you’ve been following this series, the seeds have been planted for quite some time. With that announcement, it joins No/One (due March 2023) and Supermassive 2 following after as premier comic events for comics’ most exciting line. In the meantime, there is a calm before the storm within the latest issue following Nathan Burnett.

RADIANT BLACK #22 by Kyle Higgins, Eduardo Ferigato, Ze Carlos, Raul Angulo, DC Hopkins and Michael Busuttil (Image Comics via Black market Narrative) takes a small detour from recent events to give readers a reminder of how far one of our heroes have come since issue #1. Let’s not wait any longer and jump in this trip to the west coast, shall we?

RADIANT BLACK #22

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

When this series began, Nathan Burnett returned home from a failed venture as a writer in Los Angeles. The only thing he has to show for it was a nearly $40,000 credit card debt. Once he returned to Lockport, Illinois, fate had different plans for him as he became connected to the Power Radiant and became the hero known as Radiant Black. In that journey, there has been highs, lows, near-deaths, passing of mantles to his best friend Marshall when he was in a coma, more radiants emerging and oh yeah……ONE GIANT FREAKING ROBOT! Last issue showed Nathan and Marshall being recruited by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to track down their nemesis Shift and his weapons trafficking in St. Louis while Radiant Yellow is breaking down the mystery of the giant robot and how the world as we know it is in danger.

During their venture to St. Louis, Nathan gets a message from his ex in LA, JJ, about a short story he wrote for TV. Nathan assures Marshall that he’s “very done” with LA. However, Nathan heads back to LA for a short moment with JJ’s assurance that this is a real deal for TV. On the plane, Marshall and Wendell (Radiant Yellow) have tasked Nathan to search Shift’s phone (which he took during their encounter) for more clues on the robot and what’s going after as told by Wendell). Once he lands, Nathan starts having flashbacks to his previous time in the city of Angels. After running into old friends Elizabeth and Micah, Nathan makes his way to JJ’s apartment with her new boyfriend (and Nathan’s old roommate) Brayden.

Readers will see the dread in Nathan has he “reconnects” with the obnoxious Brayden until the save is made by JJ, who’s spinning about the project but there’s some other factors involved that Nathan’s not so cool with. Clearing his head, Nathan checks out an address in Shift’s phone that might prove to be a valuable lead heading into the mystery of the robot. At this stage, readers see a quick moment of Radiant business before getting to the main event. After more flashbacks and time with Brayden (along with a surprise event), Nathan meets with JJ’s boss, the fate of Nathan’s story is displayed. How does the meeting go? What is Nathan’s reaction to all that unfolds? The closing moments give readers an ending to think about before heading into the next stage towards the Catalyst War.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins breaks away (for the most part) the super heroics to bring Nathan back full circle with a return to the beginning of his journey. The LA trip was an interesting call-back but one that worked factoring in what’s ahead. In a way, it almost feels as Nathan was trying to make closure on his past before facing an uncertain future. Seeing the flashback moments with Brayden (who was insufferable) established what Nathan walked away from the first time crystal clear to long time readers. Heading into the final act, Higgins sets things up where there is a different feel as Nathan meets with JJ’s boss. Thought-provoking final line and panel to close things out before heading back “home”.

The art duties were split for this issue between Ferigato and Ze Carlos (along with Raul Angulo), who last Massiveverse readers saw his work during Rogue Sun #7 (The “Choose Your Own Adventure” issue). This works great with this issue as Carlos’s art was the Radiant side adventure while Ferigato took Nathan’s trip in Los Angeles. Ferigato and Angulo portrayed the flashbacks exceptionally, making them stand out and contrasting the present day actions of Brayden. Seeing Nathan’s range of emotions added a solid layer to the story and gave depth to his backstory prior to issue #1. The final panels tie up Nathan’s journey and gives readers an interesting thought knowing what is coming up next when he returns back to Lockport.

FINAL POINT: Radiant Black #22 closes and opens a plot point for Nathan Burnett that has lingered since the debut issue. Higgins and Ferigato dive into the toll the return to Los Angeles takes while Ze Carlos keeps the super heroics featured with fantastic art and storytelling. The issue provides a calm before the storm facing our heroes this summer so make sure to check this out on New Comic Book Day to see a different side of Radiant Black.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins with a crowd shuffling into a rodeo. The PA announcer is getting them hyped up introducing “The sweetheart of the rodeo….Jimmy Thomas!” The vibe is Jimmy is just pushing thru as his best days are long gone. As he rides his horse into a flaming circle, Jimmy is thrown off the horse upon landing. Waking up to a doctor checking him over, Jimmy is told to stop horse-riding as one more fall could prove deadly. Defiantly, Jimmy ignores the advice. At this moment, Jimmy is told by Gram, the rodeo manager that his mother called with bad news about his father. He’s in the hospital and things do not sound good. Jimmy acts unfazed by this news and is only focused on going to party after the show.

With the drinks flowing, Jimmy brushes off calling his mother back and sets out to party the night away. He’s approached by a reporter in the bar for a cover story. Jimmy escapes the crowd with him and starts a conversation. The topic shifts to Jimmy’s future in the business, which Jimmy evades to only get more tequila. As the night moves forward, so does Jimmy’s partying. From drinking, dancing and making out with a gentleman acquaintance, Jimmy makes the most of the night. This leads to a surprise move a Jimmy finds his horse, Emmylou and ventures to see his parents while figuring out his future.

From the city, Jimmy and Emmylou make their way to Silver Creek. As he makes a stop to splash some water on hi face, Emmylou becomes scared as a walking coyote (with Jimmy’s notable 2 different colored eyes) appears to be stealing his satchel. A chase ensues which leads to Jimmy wrestling the creature down only to have the tides turned. At this moment, Jimmy is taken back to his youth and beginnings in the rodeo. Readers witness as Jimmy does a ride but his fellow rider/boyfriend Zeke doesn’t fare as well. Zeke is injured from the ride and can’t try riding until a few surgeries happen (at best). During this time, their love is challenged by Jimmy’s success and offers to leave for the big show. Zeke ultimately ends things for the two and Jimmy snaps back to “reality” where the creature leads them to shelter for the night. On this journey, the creature shifts into a dog named Casey and they arrive at the doorstep of Casey’s owner, who offers shelter from an upcoming storm. Sparks begin to fly between the owner and Jimmy. Even with the passionate moment, Jimmy is still thinking about the past with Zeke.

At this stage, readers see another figure appear before Jimmy. This encounter leads Jimmy down a more dangerous path as he keeps flashing back to other moments with Zeke. What do these visions mean? How do they try into the present? Will Jimmy get back to his parents or be lost in his own dark journey? Readers will get to ride along with Jimmy as he faces his past legacy as the tale takes quite a few detours before ending up at its’ fulfilling conclusion with Jimmy’s future defined.

Breakdown: Lockard shapes the story of Jimmy Thomas as a defining statement of how love can conquer all. The novel is broken into a few key places backing that statement up. Jimmy’s love of the rodeo is a driving point of his character and one he refuses to walk away from even though it may kill him. Jimmy’s love of family is another point as that becomes his drive to race against time to see his father. That said, those loves fail in comparison to his love of Zeke and the emotional toll it takes on him to escape from its’ demise before wrestling with its closure before moving on. The self exploration Lockard sets Jimmy on to unlock captures readers as they see him battle to find the one love that ultimately wins him. There is no clear-cut path to that answer with many stops along the way in reflecting the past to set forth the future. Mixing in elements such as guides like “coyote” made for unique twists in Jimmy’s path. The ending doesn’t miss the landing as it leaves readers with a definitive answer to where Jimmy’s heart lies now.

David combines fantasy imagery in with the realistic look at Jimmy’s journey into his own vision of love. The transformation of the coyote into the dog was a rime example of this. It also showed how Jimmy was dealing with his memories of his times with Zeke, losing himself in those moments. Another great Segway into his flashbacks involves a near full page panel involving lightning to send him back into his own memories of an argument with Zeke. These are balanced out with vivid scenery as Jimmy treks back to his parents on horseback. Davis makes these panels stand out with brighter colors to set the tone of happiness in contrast to hiding his emotions with his partying lifestyle with blue colors. Excellent final panel to close the novel out with a lasting image for readers.

Now left powerless due to the Morphin Grid being hacked, the heroes have to run and leave the command center in the possession of Rita Repulsa and Krang!

Once the heroes reconvene, Shreddar appears and makes his intentions known. He hasn’t become a hero. He is fueled by revenge for being ousted by Krang after the last defeat. It’s solid motivation as it appears Rita is on the verge of conquering, using Angel Grove as their playground. Can the heroes come back? An idea is thrown to the group, but it’s worth a shot to see if it can tip the fight back in their favor. Readers won’t believe what they see as the good guys mount their attack! If anyone thinks that’s big just wait until another player in this game makes a shocking move setting a small team of heroes into a familiar place but with a dangerous figure joining them in the final moment.

BREAKDOWN: Excellent work by Parrott ramping up the surprises throughout this issue. Just when things look bleak, the heroes come up with a crazy idea for dealing with the Morphin Grid being hacked and it works SO well! Readers will enjoy this sequence immensely. Throwing Shreddar into the mix as a “frenemy” also provides a unique dynamic for the heroes. Knowing how dangerous he is, the lingering tension haunts these scenes and presents more challenges as the story progresses. Pacing is never an issue here and with all the characters involved in big battles, no one felt overshadowed or lost. It’s a skill that Parrott pulls off perfectly each time it is presented in any story he does. The big surprise reveal late in this chapter is a great addition to this story. Readers will be thrown for another loop but it’s a fascinating play that connects easily to the situation at hand. Excellent final banter from the heroes to close out the latest installement moving things towards the final act.

The best artist in comics today continues to level this story up. Dan Mora makes the smallest action moments feel HUGE. The battle for the command center has key moments but it’s exclamation point is actually Rita’s demonic smile at the havoc she created. The moment everyone will be talking about though is how the heroes deal with not having the powers from the Morphin Grid. No spoilers but Mora gives it a enormous debut and the following action will blow readers away. It’s counter-balanced when a character makes a big reveal late in the book. The emotional reactions give those scenes more gravity as it sends the story into a new direction.

FINAL POINT: The combined fandoms of MMPR and TMNT will be on the edge of their seats for the action and drama unfolding in the latest chapter of the epic sequel crossover. Parrott, Mora and the team keep raising the bar with amazing writing and phenomenal art. There is much to be excited about within these pages, so make a point to pick this series up at the local comic shop!

DAMN THEM ALL #5 by Simon Spurrier, Charlie Adlard, Sofie Dodgson, Shayne Hannah Cui, and Jim Campbell takes readers to the penultimate closing of its’ initial debut with an issue that will have fans talking.

Editor warning: this book has some panels that might be too mature for younger readers. That said, let’s jump into the latest chapter and see where Ellie and company take readers now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ellie Hawthorne has now been challenged to step in and stop the 72 devils of the Ars Goetia in replacement for her Uncle Alfie, who died mysteriously. Her purpose is very easy: send all of the 72 devils back to Hell. With help from Dora, an officer with a complicated past with her uncle Alfie, and some more “allies”, Ellie sets out to complete the mission or die trying. Last we saw Ellie and co, they were dealing with Theo Bolster and the 500 Club. After an impromptu exorcism, Theo seems defeated but is far from it. Ellie is back on her mission and wastes no time hitting the ground running.

This issue opens up with Ellie, Dora and Frankie Wax (Ellie’s “boss”) raid the home of Ninebob Barry and his devil Vine. The scenes are intense and waste no time in setting a frightening tone. Ellie makes her way into Barry’s room and finds him waiting with an old friend sent by Theo: Glasya-Labolas, a demon who’s already impacted Ellie and her circle of associates. The resolution to this conflict is one that readers won’t see coming! Its’ repercussions send Ellie on a wild path that ultimately ends up with an ending that will stun faithful fans of this series!

BREAKDOWN: Heading into the arc finale, Spurrier wastes no panels in bringing some closure to Ellie while opening up a whole new chapter. The story with Ninebob Barry is one that plays into Ellie’s strengths. Never at any point is Ellie defined as a “hero” or plays everything in heroic fashion. This portion of the issue Spurrier brings out the full grey complexity of the character to a solid resolution. Things move fairly quickly here but once that final moment hits, it is a perfect mic drop moment that readers are not ready for.

Adlard doesn’t shy away from the intense imagery with this chapter. The fighting is brutal and bloody. The conclusion of the Ninebob Barry tale holds nothing back. Dealing with the supernatural, the demons look menacing and work to play off of Ellie’s brashness. Even with Ellie’s interactions with Frankie Wax and Carlin, her more “normal” moments and reactions connect as someone who isn’t good or evil, they just are who they are. That said, no other image will get as much buzz as the final one for this issue. Brace for it.

LOCAL MAN #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast.

For this entry, we’re taking a look at a brand new series from Image Comics with a very unique plot behind it. LOCAL MAN #1 by Tony Fleecs (STRAY DOGS), Tim Seeley (WILDCATS), Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio mixes the world of superheroes up with a great mystery behind it. Who is JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK and what has he done to go home super hero to “ordinary” Local Man? Let’s take a look at the debut issue and see where this journey takes us, shall we?

LOCAL MAN #1

Creative: Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio

Credit: Image Comics

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

This story begins with a young man named JACK XAVER sitting on a bench waiting for a bus. The area is midday, set in the middle of nowhere, 10 miles outside of Farmington (located in the Midwest). A driver goes by and mentions that the bus hasn’t run by this area in years. During the conversation, the driver recognizes Jack as Crossjack. Once Jack says that’s him, the conversation shifts. The driver speeds off and leaves him with the parting words: “F*** CROSSJACK”….. and here we go.

By nightfall, Jack makes his way to his parents. They are less than thrilled to see him. Jack is trying to be upbeat and positive with them but they are not budging in their tones. Both are disappointed and angry at Jack. His father begins drilling him about how long he will be there and what is he going to do now. The only one happy to see him is Pepper, their dog. Even in saying grace before eating, Jack’s mother asks for forgiveness for Jack’s actions embarrassing the family. As much as Jack is trying to reconnect with his parents, the cord is cut. The only concern is how Jack can fix this mess. Old-school Image readers hear the mention of a few classic teams as Jack is encouraged to get his job back with the superhero team THIRD GEN, who appear to have a Youngblood vibe to them.

With the parents not welcoming him with open arms, Jack takes off for the Barnyard Saloon to try finding some normalcy. The patrons aren’t welcoming but someone has crashed the bar looking for Jack: a costumed figure known as Hodag. Hodag is trying to relay some message to him, but Jack is too busy reliving his hero glory days. However, they’re far from the hero world and the patrons throw Jack out and Hodag is arrested. All hope seems lost for Jack until he runs into an old friend: Inga

While the pair catches up at Igna’s baked shop, Third Gen shows up with paperwork stating Crossjack and all things related to the image are copyrighted by Third Gen Enterprises and he is in violation for fighting Hodag. Jack is stunned to see this and his former teammates are none too pleased to deal with him.

Just what did Jack do to cause this much outrage? What does life mean now for a hero who can’t be a hero? Readers watch as Jack adjusts to his new life but not without a few moments in the final act that draw out more questions to what is going on involving the former hero with a strong final homage panel to close on. The back-up story explaining Third Gen is a great additional piece to show readers the background of what Jack was involved with being apart of that team

LOCAL MAN #1

BREAKDOWN: Seeley & Fleecs dive head first into establishing everyone hates Jack. From the opening moments, the hometown hero has failed his city in epic fashion. The conversation with his parents is telling as they keep mentioning how Jack needs to get his job back and he needs forgiveness in the worst possible way. Really enjoyed the team callbacks from Image’s beginnings. The anger being dealt to Jack comes off strong and harsh, building that a line was crossed that can’t be looked past. The conversation with Inga proves to be a well-needed break from the consistent anger towards the hometown hero. With at least one friend, Jack has someone to lean on but clearly it won’t be enough. Interesting close to the book as there is much intrigue to what has happened to Jack and what is following him home.

The artwork captures the disdain of the town extremely well. The initial encounter with the driver sets the pace for things to come with two simple words: F*** Crossjack.” The moments with his parents come off big as readers see the sheer disgust to Jack’s situation. During the fight with Hodag, the art switches for a quick panel to show Jack reliving what he was apart of with Third Gen. It’s a great intro to the back-story “flip book” with perfectly captures the 90’s feel of Image. The story involving Hodag will be one to watch as it’s only begun to scratch the surface of why he showed up in Farmington.

FINAL POINT: Local Man #1 brings forth the mystery of a hero’s fall from grace and is it possible to be redeemed? Fleecs, Seeley and the team deliver on excellent storytelling and artwork to gift readers a tale that is more than it seems. Don’t miss this book on New Comic Book Day.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kenny and Ted are two teens growing up in the small town of Summerton in the 1980’s. The awkward friends are trying to survive the high-school social landscape but neither are expecting their lives to be transformed by a mysterious pair of glasses. That’s exactly what happens after they discover some old comics and an ad for “magic specs”. The following day, a pair of specs shows up at Kenny’s doorstep mysteriously. The friends start making “wishes” that come true but fate deals them a bad hand as a wish to stop Bernard Slyman aka Skunk from fighting them causes his disappearance.

It was at this moment their luck ran out. Ted was framed for Skunk’s disappearance/murder and Kenny’s quest to find out the secret behind the glasses was more than he bargained for. The glasses are a part of a vicious cycle that preys on desperate people, leaving nothing good in its’ wake. Now in a race against time and the law, the boys look to destroy the glasses and hopefully fix things.

The finale kicks off with Kenny and Ted hiding in the woods after escaping the police station. They’re trying everything that they can to break the glasses. With no luck in breaking the specs, Detective Kingsley from the Summerton Police arrives to where the boys are. In a heart-wrenching move, Ted tells Kenny to take everything and run, then turns himself over to Kingsley.

The next day, Ted’s preliminary hearing was set. It’s resolution is a surprise but one without a happy ending as readers witness the fallout. However, one lingering plot point that gets resolved before closing the story out on a very pleasing epilogue.

Breakdown: Booher closes the series out with a very pleasing ending. The series has focused on the bond between Kenny and Ted and remained the driving force during the finale. Seeing what Ted was willing to do for his best friend in sacrificing himself to answer for the charges is a huge moment. Seeing Kenny’s guilt pour out on the page only made the ending that much more impactful. The specs were a secondary character that didn’t get nor need a ton of panel time to make its mark, especially here. Booher throws the question of “Is a wish really worth it if is’ not real” right at the audience and gives them a perfect answer in the final act. This story has been an excellent read and fingers crossed it gets made into a streaming series/movie.

Shehan brings to life the moving reactions to all the events unfolding. Kenny’s reactions to everything Ted does for him leading to the eventual arrest showcased how their friendship was so important to both. This is magnified tenfold during the final act (which is fantastic storytelling right down to the full page panel moonlight walk-off image that needs to be seen & read without spoilers). The closing moments were a strong finish with an even more peculiar ending shot.

FINAL POINT: Specs by Booher, Shehan, Stevens and Campbell has been a captivating saga along two best friends whose friendship and bond are challenged with the ability to change their lives, but not without consequences. The series has been the definition of incredible storytelling and art since the start. The finale has no disappointment (other than the series is over). Highest Possible Recommendation this week.

BLACK CLOAK #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to a brand new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the next chapter in a sci-fi murder mystery from Image Comics. The debut issue was an impressive read which earned the highest possible recommendation from yours truly. That statement was echoed by a great deal of fans who have created a huge buzz surrounding this story heading into the second installment. Black Cloak #2 by Kelly Thompson, Meredith McClaren and BeccaCarey welcomes readers back into the world of Kiros & Detective Phaedra Essex. Let’s not wait another second and jump back into the fallout from the debut’s cliffhanger ending, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the throne of Kiros (the last city of the known world) is discovered dead. This passing captures the attention of Detective Phaedra Essex and her fellow black cloak Pax, who are now tasked to solve the mystery of one of Kiros’ royal family’s death. There is nothing ordinary about Freyal’s death as there is a connection to a pair of dead bodies discovered near the Lagoon, one of many noteworthy locations throughout Kiros. The pair begins to dig deeper into this situation resulting in an uncomfortable visit with the Queen and Phaedra. Word of Freyal’s death spreads fast and by the time Phaedra and Pax return to the station, there’s a huge list of suspects claiming involvement with the death. However, one person of interest is there for another reason as they stab Phaedra with a special blade!

This issue opens up with Phaedra waking up in the Kiros police morgue after last issues’ assassination attempt. Shaken, Phaedra is trying to put together the pieces of what happened with Nida. The conversation gets heated after wings appear to be growing out of her back. Nida says Phaedra should reveal her truth: She’s half Dracona which she feels would put her family in certain danger. Phaedra brushes this off and tries going back to work examining Freyal’s autopsy. This prompts a flashback to happier times between the two. Once Phaedra returns to the station, she and Pax start interviewing witnesses for information on the case. Most lead to dead ends but one conversation emerges with a possible break in the case. However, that isn’t the biggest reveal in this issue. What happens when Phaedra returns to her apartment? Who is waiting for her and what information is talked about that sends Phaedra and Pax into the next chapter? Readers will have much to talk about following this issue.

BREAKDOWN: Thompson keeps the mystery and intrigue front and center with this issue. The world of Kiros is still opening up to readers but nothing is tipped off too much. Phaedra and Nida’s conversation is a big moment as the secret behind Phaedra slowly comes to light in just a few panels. The flashbacks with Freyal is a solid break from the sleuthing to showcase Phaedra’s secret while trying to be normal in this unique world. The new characters introduced in the final act prove to add more possibilities of where things can be heading. It’s the great thing about presenting a whole new civilization with a debut series. Thompson plays into the open playbook and readers will begin speculating about what factors they are involved with in this unraveling tale. Excellent swerve with the final act forging a new direction in the case to close on.

McClaren and Carey make the flashback panels pop off the pages with a great switch in color schemes. The emotions pour out which readers will encompass how much Phaedra is motivated to solve this murder. The envisioning of the witnesses statement follows the same formula with the uses of light and dark. The residents of Kiros stand out as well during the interrogation moments. This landscape keeps expanding and the visuals are a big factor of why fans are getting hooked on this tale more and more each day. Great final moment to end things on.

FINAL POINT: The mystery continues to be a must read in the pages of Image Comics’ next big thing. Make sure you pick this issue up at the local Comic Shop this week.

The latest story has pushed Erica into dangerous territory with a true rival hellbent on taking her down. What started as a simple case has spiraled out of control. After last issue, the anticipation has been HUGE for this chapter.

Before we dive into this issue, some of the imagery for this blog may not be suitable for younger readers. Viewer discretion is advised. If all good after that, shall we get started?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

An evil creature known as “the Duplicate” is on the loose in Tribulation, New Mexico. Gabi is a teenager who watched her family be slaughtered by this monster. Riqui, a local bartender who is her “guardian” now is trying to keep her safe. Erica Slaughter has come to town after staying off the grid to help. However, the Order of St. George isn’t ready to let Erica be a loose end running away from them. They have acquired the services of Cutter to take her out. In a blink of an eye, Cutter has repeatedly attacked Erica on various levels, to the point of killing her longtime ally, Big Gary Slaughter. Cutter has also just arrived to Tribulation and immediately framed Erica for the murder of Tribulation police officers while assisting the Duplicate into turning into a clone of Erica! Now a wounded target inside the police station, Erica’s world is about to become more dangerous.

This issue opens up with am officer making a coffee run before walking into a horrific scene of dead fellow officers. Erica emerges and disarms the officer, telling him Cutter is behind this and she is leaving. Erica frees Gabi and Riqui from their barricaded room. Before they leave, Erica takes an object left behind by Cutter that might hold some information about stopping her. From here, the story switches gears to the Order of St. George where there is a funeral and burial service for Big Gary. Many notable characters from the SIKTC lore stand and pay respect. One troubled by the actions of Cutter’s killing of Gary is Cecilia, who talks with the Dragon, the head of the order, about Cutter’s services. What transpires with their talk gives a unique insight to the dragon’s methods. What exactly is his endgame involving Cutter and Erica? What depths is he willing to go in the name of the Order? Readers don’t wait too long to see the fallout of this chat might be bigger than most realize to close this issue out.

Something is Killing the Children #29

Creative: James Tynion, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design

Credit: BOOM! STUDIOS

BREAKDOWN: One of the biggest elements of SIKTC is Tynion’s ability to play the long game (aka Slow Burn) better than anyone. Erica’s time in the book is very brief but does enough to move her story along. Readers also see Erica trying to regain her calm after being on the defensive side of Cutter’s attack. It was a noteworthy nod to feature Gary since he was killed four issues previously to show how its’ impacting the characters of the Order. The conversation between the Dragon and Cecilia illustrates how dangerous Cutter is without showing her at all during this issue. To see the reaction of someone as high up in the Order as Cecilia questioning if bringing Cutter in was a right choice is very telling. The fallout of this talk seems like this could be the match to light a bigger fire for the story moving forward after this arc.

Dell’edera holds nothing back from readers in showing Cutter’s trail of bodies from the police station. The imagery speaks volumes and seeing “Officer Bill” walk in to the carnage was frightening. Like previously stated, the issue gave a majority spotlight to the talk between the Dragon and Cecilia and Dell’edera explained this talk by using the character’s eyes and demeanor to tip readers off on the feelings of doubt and anger involving Cutter. Even without his signature mask on, The Dragon conveyed a great deal through his body language. This reflected his reference of emotion in the talk. The final scene will rise some questions in how the talk fallout will play a role but it made a solid statement to close on.

FINAL POINT: Tynion, Dell’edera and the team take a pause from the latest challenge of Erica Slaughter to pay respect to a fallen member of the Order of St. George. The slow burn method of solid writing and art wins again for an issue you won’t want to miss on New Comic Book Day this week.

Now in the city’s darkest hour, Cassia is thrown into the superhero world as the signal of hope the people need.

After thwarting off a monster invader who almost hurt her roommate Harriette, this issue opens up with Cassia talking with her mother about what’s next and how Cassia doesn’t want the IGR power! Cassia’s mother explains how the city is in danger and the person who activated the shields might have a possible connection. Cassia’s mother also reveals about her past with the first Inferno Girl. In this reveal, she tells Cassia of how they were averting monsters attacks that were being helped by a secret cabal. With that knowledge, Cassia and her mom start a plan to dig into a possible return of that cabal and stop them.

Cassia returns to her dorm and catches up with Harriette, who’s proving to be a calming influence on her. BREAKDOWN: The dynamic between Cassia and her mother has been a huge part of this series thus far & Groom allows that to take center stage for this issue. Cassia is still coming into her own as a reluctant hero but seeing her mother’s positive reactions gives her hope as much as she’s inspiring the people of Apex City. Another noteworthy point of this issue is Cassia’s struggles with her powers. With how fast the story is moving, readers might forget she just received the powers and is still in a learning phase with them. Seeing how she’s still going despite the set-backs shows Cassia is becoming the hero her mother (and others) are believing she can be. Mr. Park and Tommy have some mentionable page time for this issue but seeing how they impact the story is not defined just yet. They both appear to be characters to watch. The issue concludes on an emotional note that looks to push Cassia even further as it appears she will be tested in a manner she could never expect.

D’Urso is absolutely crushing this book with the artwork. Cassia’s pessimistic reactions to her mother’s constant optimism adds more depth to the story being told. In her role of being a symbol of hope, Cassia is wearing her doubt. Seeing her start to overcome that after each win is easy to see for readers. Speaking of those wins, let’s talk about those action panels! They have a frantic energy to add some intensity to to overall story. The initial debut and actions of the Griffin come across huge, making an immediate impact. Each panel feels like it’s going to fly off the page when IGR and the Griffin face off. It balances out the huge closing event and Cassia’s reaction to it. Nothing but huge wins this issue with D’Urso and Monti’s work.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

When a charity fundraiser she makes an appearance at is disrupted by an explosion, Eva jumps in to help. During this, Eva is teleporting Kelly, an EMT out of danger but they wind up far from home…as in other world far away. With her powers not working right, Eva tries finding a way back with detours to other worlds, with an eventual landing spot to a cat spaceship. On board, Eva is injured by the ships protector…a HUGE cat. At this point, Kelly reveals she is wearing a vest with is syphioning Radiant Pink’s power!

Eva quickly remembers what Kelly’s action caused and how many people could have been hurt. A fight ensues while Kelly is trying to plead her case about her actions. Once the pair calms down for a second, readers see a truce form long enough to make plans to try going home again. Once back on the ship, more secrets are revealed. BREAKDOWN: Camarena and Flores keep the light-heartened tone throughout the book with a few more serious moments mixed in. The flashback sequence is more serious as readers see glimpses of Kelly’s past and why she’s involved in the attack on Eva. Her story has much to explain but it takes a sidestep to the bigger plot point for this issue. Speaking of which, The reaction Eva has to Kelly’s actions makes perfect sense and doesn’t feel completely over, even with their truce intact. It works long enough to deal with the ship and its’ true situation, which plays into the fun aspect of the book. The closing moments throw a curve into the story nothing to knock it off track from the fun read the series has been.

Kubert and Nalty hit the mark with Kelly’s flashbacks. Using a different coloring scheme on the panels worked to connect the sadness of hr past, leading into the more defined panels of the present time. The emotional outbursts from Eva were captured perfectly as she’s now not just fighting Kelly but her broken trust as well. The alien world aspect involving the ship gave a solid contrast to Eva’s reactions and more serious interactions with Kelly. Interesting final image to end this chapter on moving into the home stretch for this series.

BOOK OF SHADOWS #4 (VALIANT ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to a brand new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast.

For this entry, we’re at the conclusion (for now) of a brand new team series coming from the pages of Valiant Entertainment. Last year, Book Of Shadows went on an early hiatus after releasing their first 2 issues when Valiant re-shifted schedules. The closing installement hits the local comic shops this week with Book Of Shadows #4 by CULLEN BUNN, VICENTE CIFUENTES, NICK FILARDI, and DAVE SHARPE. The supernatural heroes of the Valiant Universe have come together to fight an ancient evil and last we saw, things were not going well. Let’s take a closer look at this volume’s final chapter, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Exarch Fane has started “The Dark Feast.”, which presents sacrifices to the Book Of Shadows, a dark an powerful weapon. An evil of this magnitude has caught the attention of Shadowman, Persephone, Dr. Mirage, PUNK MAMBO, and the Eternal Warrior. This has been a great line-up mixing in longstanding members of Valiant with more recent editions hailing from the latest Shadowman series written by Cullen Bunn. With the group splitting up as Shadowman leads Punk Mambo and Persephone into battle against Fane’s army, Dr. Mirage and The Eternal Warrior have entered the Veil Of Death looking for a means to end the Book once and for all. Both plans have not been perfect as Shadowman and Mambo have become possessed leaving an inexperienced Persephone to Exarch Fane alone while the Warrior’s impulsiveness causes an action which unleashes the souls used to write the Book onto the masses, and they are not pleased as to what has happened.

This issue opens up with Persephone running from a vampire-possessed Mabo and Shadowman. Things look bleak until the Shadow Loa (the power source of Shadowman) forces the possession out giving some help to Persephone. Some is the key word as Fane disposes of Shadowman while courting Persephone into being another vessel in handling the Book’s power. When she rejects the offer, Fane unleashes his wrath onto the heroes. Meanwhile, Dr. Mirage and The Eternal Warrior try to handle the lost souls from destroying them. A play is made that proves to be the tipping factor for the heroes, but is it enough? Can the heroes find a way to stop Fane and the Book of Shadows? Can all these personalities work together long enough to save the day? Readers sit ringside as the fight for the Valiant Universe is about to unfold. It’s conclusion provides that answer and also leaves questions to if/when this team will be seen again?

Breakdown: Bunn brings this story to a satisfying conclusion that readers will be pleased with the outcome. This books’ strengths have been the clashing of personalities amongst the heroes. Bunn hits those marks with the interactions between Punk Mambo and Persephone, who might be the standout character from this series. If you’ve read Bunn’s Shadowman, Persephone has been an evolving character since her introduction. This story highlighted her “learnings” as far as becoming a hero. Where that leads is anyone’s guess but this story had a different feel than just being a Shadowman story. The conclusion feels more like “Good Bye” than “The End and hopefully, that is the case here.

Cifuentes brought Fane’s powers to life with ease. The panels showcasing that pop extremely well. The scenario with Dr. Mirage also jumps out to readers as well, due to an excellent job with Filardi’s colors. Featuring the contrast of Light vs. Darkness for the closing battle worked well to connect with readers. Solid final image to close this chapter and series out on.

FINAL POINT: Book of Shadows closes out their debut tale on a high-note, leaving readers with a solid ending. Bunn, Cifuentes and the team cap loose ends off for this eclectic team of heroes. The series is a fun read and one to keep an eye out for at the comic shops.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

A disturbing murder in Utah in 1891 has brought legendary lawman Marshall Holt into its’ investigation before he retires. When the case starts revealing itself, all roads lead Holt back to the town of one of his most chilling investigations: Canary. On that assignment, Holt was introduced to Hyrum Tell, a psychopath who’s heinous activities have scared the bravest of lawmen. The flashback sequences for Tell’s actions speaks LOUD volumes for what kind of evil is inside him.

Upon his return to Canary, Holt crosses paths with Edison Edwards (or Ed-Ed), & Mabel Warren, daughter of Canary founder Chester Warren. The trio set out investigate a cave that has a sinister history that may hold the key to solving the case. With the use of Edward’s Sonotron, the trio investigate the cave’s water levels. When the results are voices saying “WE’RE STILL DOWN HERE!!!”, Holt and company are not prepared for what’s next.

The trio continue to look for clues at an abandoned house for “The Global Geological & Divination Society 1081” or House 1081. The “Canary Evolution” theory becomes a theme as they search the house with discovering a picture of Hyrum Tell connecting to the group. Before they can process what they’ve found, someone has trapped them inside the house and lit it on fire! Meanwhile, Mayor Gem pulls out one of the though dead miners from the cave using Edward’s Sonotron’s. What appeared to be a miracle turns into a nightmare quickly as the minor transforms into a horrific creature!

This issue opens up with a flashback to Holt returning home from the initial Tell encounter and gives some insight on this character but it’s quickly interrupted with the escape from the burning house! Once everyone leaves the house, the smoke from Canary fills the skies and the danger is in the streets. Tommy, the transformed miner is wreaking havoc slashing his sister Nellie and fighting off the town’s people. Holt makes the save but readers witness first hand it might not be enough as he’s attacked by Tommy. When that moment is resolved, Holt wakes to see he’s now in a race against time to stop this evil with more unforeseen factors in play. Can Holt stop what is coming before it’s too late? How does the flashback scenes tie into this? Readers see the beginning of the end as Holt makes his moves setting the pieces in place to bring this story to a heart-stopping finish.

CANARY #5

BREAKDOWN: Snyder does a masterful job at bringing this mystery to a boiling point. Once Holt returns from the burning house, his will is challenged by a threat he is nowhere near ready for. The reaction Holt has when Tommy “speaks” to him is terrifying and shows how rattled Holt is knowing what is coming next. Being put on the pedestal of a hero from the first encounter has now been taken away as he is struggling to stop what’s unfolding. Seeing the interaction with the new players is a perfectly placed moment to drive home that Holt is in over his head with very little signs of hope to win. Even when Holt tries giving a rallying speech, it feels flat due to his character being broken down by what has happened. Readers can’ help but see how Holt refuses to quit and get fully invested into his final attempt to thwart this situation. The flashback sequences are mixed in well to give an added layer of fear and uncertainty to connect it with this issue’s conclusion. This is excellent storytelling and dialogue at its best.

The way Holt reacts with his eyes to what is happening is crafted so well by Panosian. Tommy in his new form showcased what danger Holt and the town are facing and held nothing back presenting the terror. Since he wears his bandana during the encounter with Tommy, the only way to “see” his reaction is through his eyes and how he’s shattered by what’s unraveling around him. Even the panel showcasing him talking with Mabel about how they’re going to win doesn’t feel true as his facial expression shows nothing but defeat. Panosian’s attention to this area is incredible. The flashbacks are excellent telling readers on how traumatizing the initial run-in with Tell. It elevated the final moment even more as both parts will be reflecting each other in the closing chapter.

Final Point: Snyder and Panosian bring sheer terror to Marshall Holt and readers with this penultimate issue. The chilling dialogue is paired with equally disturbing imagery to create the sense of doubt in the fabled lawman of this era. The whole series has been a must-read and this issue is no exception. Make sure to check this out on Comixology when it drops (and grab a physical copy when it hits the LCS after its conclusion). This is a book you can’t afford to miss.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

If new to this series, Mercy has been recruited in the fight against the evil Kroach. The previous seasons have been quite the journey for Mercy. Season Four kicked off with a timejump surrounding a young girl named “Becky,” who is revealed to be a younger version of Mercy! Ratmir and Jill Anderson, allies to Mercy, are setting up camp at the home of Becky’s Grandmother after escaping a tough situation. Unfortunately for them, time jumping doesn’t always land right and they missed the time by about 20 years before meeting up with an older Mercy. That said, the planet Tertiarus and its’ protector Alizarine becomes the second part of this season’s focus.

Where things jump in, Tertiarus hasn’t fallen yet. Alizarine and Mercy (who’s all grown up) are captured by Absolm Mooncrow, a space pirate. Before deciding what to do with his prisoners, Mooncrow’s ship is attacked. Mooncrow, Mercy and Alizarine form an uneasy alliance to handle the threat but is there really any honor amongst thieves?

The crew is now heading into the direct line of the Harvester, the Kroach’s monstrous figure with an army of Deathless leaving a deadly trail in their wake. Knowing the stakes, Alizarine reveals his past encounters with the Deathless and how he has tampered in creating them via the Pantheon of Tertiarus! He then makes a play with the crew to fight back: Alizarine makes them Deathless as well. Now on an even playing field, the battle begins.

The issue is split between two fronts: Ratmir and Anderson are in 2007 waiting and watching over a young Becky. However, readers see Anderson dosn’t wait long and starts her mission to stop the Kroach on Earth. Meanwhile back on Tertiarus, Alizarine leads the Deathless crew of Mercy and Mooncrow. The action is big and high-paced, but is it enough? Has Alizarine ran out of tricks? Can Mercy survive against the insurmountable odds? A path is forged heading into the season finale that is sure to have fans of this series talking.

BREAKDOWN: Starkings splits the story into two parts with equal vaule heading into he finale. Anderson’s story is brief but still impactful as her actions spoke volumes. However, the bigger takeaway readers will have is Alizarine’s methods for fighting the Harvester. Transforming the crew had its’ advantages but brings up questions about his true motives. There is a quiet moment between the fighting involving Mooncrow’s crew members Skully and Killsword that provides a great pause in the action to remind readers what the toll has been on the people of Tertiarus. Pacing isn’t an issue here as all signs point towards a huge season finale.

Harding’s art is electric for the fight with the Harvester. Alizarine unleashing he newly transformed Deathless into battle is a very poignant panel as it sets the tone for the fight ensuing. The full page panel of the Harvester speaks volumes for what the crew is up against. There are exceptional accommodating visuals to showcase how powerful the Deathless energy has made Mercy and Mooncrow. The fight’s conclusion is a great final shot to cap off what’s transpired before heading into the closing arc. There’s much to compliment about the artwork in this issue.

FINAL POINT: The penultimate issue of Season Four doesn’t miss its’ mark with bringing the action and drama. Starkings and Harding bring Mercy’s battle to the forefront with great storytelling and art. The groundwork is set for what should be a memorable season finale.

TORRENT #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re taking a look at a brand new series from Image Comics that reunites a fan favorite creative team on a new superhero story that is sure to have fans talking. Torrent #1 features the team behind Resurrection: MARC GUGGENHEIM (Arrow) and JUSTIN GREENWOOD (Future State: Gotham), along with RICO RENZI and KEITH WOOD to showcase what happens when a hero crosses a line they can’t go back from. There is much to break down from this debut, so let’s jump right in, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue kicks off with Michelle Metcalf aka CRACKERJACK bloodied and bruised moving thru a hallway with multiple firearms strapped to her jacket. Metcalf is narrating of a simpler time before opening fire onto her enemies.

The book shifts to what appears to be a more heroic time for Crackerjack as she’s fending off a a daylight bank heist from some powered supervillains. Metcalf does have an “ally” in her fight as Slipstream makes his way into the battle. Slipstream thinks he’s the young speedster sidekick to Crackerjack but the feeling isn’t mutual. During their banter, one of the villains fires a laser blast at the pair injuring Slipstream’s leg. After disposing of the villains, Crackerjack gets Slipstream back to her hideout to attend to his wound.

After spraying it with some “proprietary technology” Crackerjack gives the orders to Slipstream NOT to do any crime-fighting for 48hrs to let the leg heal. Slipstream agrees and the pair splits up. Crackerjack returns to her family as Michelle to have dinner with her husband and young son.

However, Slipstream has doubts about his instructions to take it easy and heal. One bad decision later causes a domino effect to happen that no one can predict. What choice does Slipstream make? What are the ramifications of his actions? How does Michelle’s life turn from optimism to anger? Readers don’t wait long to see how fast her life unravels to leave a new mission in its’ wake. This is no ordinary superhero tale.

Guggenheim showcases how close of a line heroes walk before crossing over into a new persona. The beginnings of the book give a bold statement of how fast this can happen. Metcalf’s hero life starts out as a very light-hearten one that reflects traditional super hero themes. Ever the optimist, Metcalf does what she can to help Slipstream become a hero, whether she can tolerate him or not. Their dynamic is engaging to watch as he clearly is too stubborn in his youth to find his faults. This element of his character comes back in a big way to set forth Metcalf’s journey into being a vigilante. The story moves very quick but nothing is lost in its’ set-up. The final panel proves slowing down won’t be an option here (nor should it).

Greenwood and Renzi do an excellent job with the layout for this comic. When Metcalf is in her vigilante phases, the tone and feel is dark and brooding. When she was more heroic, the panels had a more energetic feel with brighter tones to help solidify that point. The initial set-up with her family brought out the emotional side of her character and made the events of the final act more impactful when they all unfolded. It paired up well with the fallout of Slipstream’s choices. There is much to enjoy from this book.

FINAL POINT: Torrent #1 gives readers an inside glimpse of how one bad choice can spiral a great hero into uncharted territory. Guggenheim, Greenwood and the team introduce the world of Michele Metcalf to the masses with an excellent story and sensational art. You definitely want to have this book on your radar for New Comic Book Day!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

If you’re new to this series, House of Slaughter is an anthology style series showcasing members of the SIKTC universe. The first arc featured Aaron Slaughter and Jace Boucher, showing their tragic love story & Jace’s fallout with the Order of St. George. That story is currently out in Trade Paperback and is well worth the purchase. This arc spotlights Jace’s return as he has left the hunting life and has become a protector of young orphans, waiting for Aaron to return. Sadly, he does know Aaron’s fate when he returned to the Order and how that day will never come.

Last issue saw Jace trying to protect a young boy named Sunny from getting into trouble trying to emulate the hunter lifestyle. Sunny’s curiosity almost gets him killed as he strays away and encounters a monster head on. Luckily, he’s saved by an old friend of Jace’s who readers saw in a flashback scene: Jolie and her group of hunters.

This issue jumps in with Sunny waking up in a car, recovering from the monster encounter. In the passenger seat is Jolie Boucher, as she introduces herself. Sunny panics and wants to go home, but Jolie calms him down to address his bleeding wounds. As Sunny asks more questions, Jolie informs him that there are more monsters spawned from the one they killed and they’re going after them and Sunny can tag along and watch.

Meanwhile, Jace is leading the young orphans on a search for Sunny. Along the way, Jace is having more flashbacks as the forest area they are walking through is very familiar to both Jace and Jolie. What visions does Jace see now? What happens when Jolie and her family make their way through the woods? Readers get more answers to the mysterious hunter and see first had that there’s more to her than it seems. The mystery deeps with a final page that will have fans talking with anticipation for the next issue.

Brombal puts the spotlight on Jolie this issue and allows readers to gain some insight to her plans. Jolie comes off as friendly to Sunny as she has a relatable story growing up. This feels as a bait and switch is coming with events later in the book, but that moment will be bigger due to the great build. Seeing Sunny mesmerized by the hunter lifestyle with Jolie is a noteworthy point as well. Sunny’s role in this story feels as it will become more pivotal with the latter events of this book. This chapter was solid storybuilding with Jace’s moments being smaller but impactful never the less.

Fuso does a very cool visual with panel breaks later in the issue. Fuso uses tree branches to break up the images instead of the traditional boxes. The monster moments later in this issue also jump out as readers seem Sunny’s reaction to the moment he’s in and it carries an eerie feel. Jace’s nightmare flashback sequence will jump out to readers as well. Nothing is held back and plays up the horror element of the series. Great final panel to close this book out on.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Since the conclusion of issue #100, the Power Rangers haven’t had a moment to catch a break. After investigating a disturbance on the moon, they (along with readers) are in complete shock seeing Lord Zedd, their longtime nemesis lying motionless and defeated at the feet of a familiar face. That person is the former Rita Repulsa who has now become Mistress Vile! Making an immediate impact, she takes a prisoner in the form of Matt, the green ranger! Zedd defeated…Matt Captured….the Rangers are becoming increasingly frustrated at the fact they can’t stop Vile. After a signal from the planet Casentine indicates the Red Omegazord is in trouble, the heroes investigate to find Alpha-1 waiting for them.

Last issue featured Vile’s origin and an idea of where Matt’s future is heading. This issue jumps to five days prior with catching up with the Omega Rangers, whom readers haven’t seen since issue #100. After a quick catch-up with Zach, Trini, Yale and Kevor, readers see that they were on their way to the planet Casentine. The story jumps to present time where the Power Rangers (from Earth) confront Alpha-1. It is quickly established for anyone doubting that this Alpha is anything but a friend. Meanwhile on Earth, Tommy and Billy are assessing recent events with an unconscious Zedd lying next to them on a medical bed. Readers can see the anger and frustration pouring out of Tommy as he questions Billy about recent activities. All the while, Aplha-1 challenges the earth Rangers where he is getting the upper hand…until Trini and Yale show up! Can they swing the odds into the heroes favor?

Back on Earth, someone has awoken and that spells trouble for everyone. How does Zordon react to this revelation? Can the combined efforts of Power and Omega stop Alpha-1? What does Kimberly and Trini find out concerning Mistress Vile? Where are Zach and Kevor? There are many questions raised heading into the next phase of Vile’s plans and readers have much to look forward to with this issue.

Flores takes Vile off the board for this issue, allowing all the major players to get some panel time (along with seeing some old friends). Pacing worked very well to hit all the marks. Many readers have wondered when they would see the Omega Rangers again and this worked as a nice re-introduction back. Their part is significant enough but not overstepping the current story set-up. Seeing Alpha-1 as a legit threat was a nice add to the story. The fallout from its’ portion of the issue will be one to watch moving forward. The Tommy/Billy sub-portion gave the readers an insight to how desperate the situation has become. However, the one character to watch coming out of this issue is Lord Zedd. Seeing the ultimate bad guy defeated and weakened makes him an even more dangerous character. What levels is he willing to go to get revenge for being defeated? Overall, solid job juggling all the characters for this chapter.

Di Gianfelice mixes things up with big action panels and simpler, but equally as impactful personal moments with the various team members. The panels with Zach and Trini along with Tommy’s discussion with Billy are perfect examples of those emotional moments. It’s countered with BIG action pages when Alpha-1 takes on the Rangers. In a few short panels, Alpha-1 demonstrates why its’ a big challenge for the Rangers to handle. There is an excellent full page panel involving Zords that will be a fan-favorite relating to that fight. Seeing a broken Zedd will also have fans buzzing about what’s next to unfold for him.
