*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

Set only months after their initial meeting, the combined forces of Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles have been faced with the combined threat of Krang and Rita Repulsa. Shredder had been laying low after his defeat from the merged forces. Casey Jones (longtime TMNT ally) went searching for him and wound up getting captured, or so readers thought. Meanwhile the united bad guys took the fight directly to Angel Grove with a takeover of the command center with the clear intent of accessing the Morphin Grid.

All would have been lost if not for an unlikely "ally” in the battle: Shredder! “The enemy of my enemy is my (temporary) friend” has never been more true as an uneasy alliance was formed to stop Rita and Krang once and for all. Their reasons vary on why but neither side is complaining about the support. The fight has worked its’ way across Angel Grove and Dimension X with many twists and turns to keep both fan bases on the edge of their seats with each issue. With last issue’s ending, Krang looks to finish the fight once and for all, taking over the Megazord in his own twisted fashion.

This issue opens up with the TMNT team (infused with the powers of the Dimension X broken morphers) returning to the Command Center to face off with Rita. However, Rita is waiting for them with a powered up and brainwashed Casey Jones poised to fight. Meanwhile, the fight for Angel Grove is in full swing as the Power Rangers (mutated into animal hybrids) attempt to slow down the Mega-Krang giant. In their current state, they can’t summon their zords, but one person can. Shredder activates a morpher and summons the Green Ranger’s Dragonzord!!! The feared TMNT adversary in charge of one of the most powerful weapons is a worrisome site but the Rangers get some more back-up as Zordon and Alpha arrive in a TurtleZord ready for action!

From here on out, the issue shifts to all action. It may be cliché to say “Big Fight Feel”, but that is exactly what fans witness here. In one corner, it’s DragonZord and TurtleZord vs Mega Krang! In the other is the Turtles facing off against Rita and Casey! Both battles live up to expectations with a few well times moments mixed in. They hit their marks and the fallouts feel impactful. The resolution plays into both fandoms with excellent parting moments. One moment brings everything back full circle to a degree, reminding readers of how great crossovers like these are when done right. The final moments play into more MMPR/TMNT lore, leaving endless possibilities of what’s next should we see these teams together again.

BREAKDOWN: Parrott constructs a closing chapter that will have fans raving in the weeks following. Balancing two fandoms of such pop-culture appeal can be difficult. Parrott plays into the strengths of each team to bring out the best in their heroic actions. Making Shredder a “frienemy” to a degree was a highlight of this issue and series. Seeing him use the powers of the Green Ranger & using the Dragonzord was a great twist. The uneasy tension he creates added to the drama. The Rangers kept waiting for the shoe to drop and him to turn, but he never did. This all plays into the long game of his ultimate goals, but seeing him save the day stands out. The Sub-plotline with Casey Jones also is a highlight moment for this series. With juggling so many characters involved, putting the spotlight on his arc broke away the sole focus on both teams for a great feature. Meshing up elements of both fandoms played out perfectly as well. The reaction after the mutation powers fade by the Rangers is prime example of this. Readers get so many possibilities presented and implemented that you can’t help but be excited for potential future adventures involving these two teams, should the situation arise.

Bringing in the premier artist in comics for this project was a huge win from the start. Seeing Mora bring his infectious action sequences to life is a whole other level of amazing. The battles of Zords pulls no punches with an attention to detail unmatched. The Mega Krang reflection in the TurtleZord’s faceplate is a prime example of this. There is one near full page panel that fans will be ecstatic to see and how detailed it is will absolutely blown fans away. Not everything this issue involves action to make an imprint. The anguish in Casey Jones’ face in the concluding moments of his story is another area. Mora blends in the quiet moments and gives them equal value to the full blown intensity of the big action panels. Mora gives readers much to digest with the closing panels. They will no doubt have fans buzzing about if and when paths cross again for these franchises.

FINAL POINT: 9.7 OUT OF 10

Parrott and Mora merge the best of what makes these two fandoms special into a series that readers won’t be able to stop talking about. The finale brings the action with the incredible visuals provided by Mora and Raul Angulo, giving both teams a battle living up to its’ billing. Parrott’s writing is superb tying in the emotional aspects of the young heroes facing a combined front by dangerous villains on the verge of finally succeeding in their plans. The series never falters and nails the landing with what transpires within these pages. You simply cannot miss this incredible series & finale!

MIGHTY MORPHIN' POWER RANGERS #107 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to a brand-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast.

For this entry, the brand new Power Rangers creative team helming the longstanding BOOM! Studios series has been on fire since their debut at issue #101. Melissa Flores and Simona Di Gianfelice (along with Raul Angulo and Ed Dukeshire) wasted no time sending shockwaves thru the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fandom with the re-introduction of Rita Repulsa now known as Mistress Vile. Vile’s attacks on the Power Rangers have only been a small part of her master plans. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #107 picks up right in the heart of Vile’s moves as she advances forward, but not without some other big moments mixed in.

Let’s jump right into this issue, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

As previously stated, the Power Rangers have their hands full with a more deadly version of their old nemesis Rita Repusla. With their first introduction, Vile left Lord Zedd (YES, THAT LORD ZEDD) lying near death at her feet. Vile also captured Matt, the Green Ranger and sent Alpha-1 out to cause some mayhem on the Omega Rangers. Suffice to say, that was only the start of the Rangers issues.

Lord Zedd was brought to Prometha Headquarters to heal but how safe is that place with Zedd residing in it? There’s little time to process as Vile and her mysterious enforcer crash the part in an attempt for find a morphin navigator which can lead access to the Morphin Grid. It is scary to think what an evil mind could do with that power. Readers see a small taste as Zedd himself has found a Morpher of his own! Now, the major players are primed for an epic throwdown!

This issue opens up Zedd revealing he’s had a morpher for quite some time, dating back to Power Rangers #16. With it primed and charged, Zedd reacts towards Grace Sterling and gives readers a small idea of what he can do. Meanwhile the Omega and Power Rangers are dealing with a broken Aplha-1, attempting to get more clues.

Back on Earth, Tommy catches up with an old friend (former Red Ranger Jason) but their talk is broken up by a now-possessed Matt leading Vile’s army into Angel Grove! There is no shortage of action here as the face-offs that have been building are now set to explode! Vile and her mysterious enforcer versus a Morphin-powered Lord Zedd! Tommy vs a possessed Matt! Things move fast to keep up with the action but is it too late? Readers get big payoffs for the building battles and even some extra reveals along the way. Even with all that, the final moments of the book introduce two more players into the game and longtime Power Ranger fans are not gonna be ready for what’s coming after this issue!

BREAKDOWN: This run continues to impress and set such a high bar! Flores has been setting up the face-offs unfolding here. Since Matt was captured, readers have been waiting to see what Vile’s work had done to him. Flores presents this version of Matt perfectly as his insecurities and fears with the team are fueling his drive here thanks to Vile. The one-liners he is saying are excellent verbal jabs to compliment the action. The same can be said for Zedd looking for revenge against Vile. Zedd being embarrassed by how he lost the first time has driven him to the point of being blinded by rage during the fight with Vile’s enforcer (which was accurately predicted on the MMPR #101 review). Pacing gives every battle proper time and the drama in-between has enough time to connect with the audience. If this wasn’t enough, just wait till the last pages and who is now getting involved. The hype you hear about with this series is well deserved of all its’ praise.

Di Gianfelice and Angulo bring the action throughout this issue. From the moment Matt walks towards Tommy, readers can instantly feel the emotions behind what’s going to happen. The depiction of the possessed Matt was done well and instantly signaled this will not be a friendly experience. Seeing Zedd unleashed was a standout moment as well. Seeing him not handle the bruise to his ego from the initial defeat has been a different look. This is reflected in his fighting style, even to one instance of being distracted just enough to take a strike. With all the action going on, the art team does sneak in some noteworthy panels involving Kimberly and Yale along with Zach and Trini. The art is very leveled on giving ample time to each story taking place. Nothing feels rushed to try cramming too much into the story. With all that going on, the final pages of the issue will be a buzzworthy topic about who appears. There is much to enjoy from the events of this issue.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Barlowe, New York seems like a quite town at first glance, but there is definitely more than meets the eye happening here. After the town sheriff is killed, a mark is found in his home. The mark is the “sinner’s mark”, which summons the Harrower, an avenger that “keeps Barlowe pure.” Jessa and her friends think of the Harrower as a myth and give the warning from their teacher little weight. On the way to a house party, some of Jessa’s friends find out first hand that the Harrower is no myth!

Even at the party, there is an eerie mood hovering around them. There is no cell phone service and the land line is dead. Shortly after, the power goes out completely to the house. What follows next is pure mayhem as the Harrower makes his move. Things become dire until help arrives in Carter Creed, the outsider at school who’s sister died in the same car accident as Jessa’s brother and the sheriff’s son. Carter has had an inkling of something coming ever since finding his dad killed in issue #1.

This issue wastes no time hitting the ground running (literally) as Carter drives the police car directly into the Harrower! Knowing that won’t stop it, Carter starts firing a shotgun directly at the wounded evil. Jessa is ordered back inside the house with whose left until Reed pushes his way in. Knowing what we do about him, readers will be waiting to see what he does to impact the current event. Carter takes the fight directly to the Harrower to buy time. In the process, he destroys part of its’ mask, vowing not to follow in its’ footsteps.

Meanwhile, Jessa and the survivors are assessing options. With the house burning down around them and dead bodies everywhere, options for survival are slim. Carter kicks in the door badly injured and orders everyone to the basement. What secrets lurk underneath the house? Readers get many big reveals as the truth behind the unstoppable killer start coming to light. Secrets are unveiled that shatter the status quo of everything Jessa knew. Can she survive the night with all she knows now? Trust me when I say no one will be expecting what happens when the final panels appear.

BREAKDOWN: Jordan doesn’t shy away from the huge reveals throughout this issue. Before we get into those (as much as we can without spoiling…they’re THAT good), the issue immediately captures the unstoppable evil verse the ordinary hero theme played out in many horror films. It’s a great way to start events rolling as seeing Carter’s valiant attempts to stop the killer elevate not only his own character but why the Harrower is such a danger. The moment with the broken mask feels as it will come into play later but deepens the lore of the Harrower. Momentum swings back to Jessa after the decent into the basement as so many reveals hit to flesh out the mystery while creating new ones. Jordan paces them out well giving enough time to let the information hit before moving onto the next one, leading into the big bombshell at the issue’s end. There is a great deal to process after reading this issue but it’s very well done that readers will want to do an immediate re-read.

Revel pulls no punches with the brutality of Carter’s standoff with the Harrower. The fight is bloody, intense and leaves nothing off limits. It is literally everything you want from the good vs. evil battle seen in every great horror story. As Jessa and company walk through the carnage of the house party, the panels exemplify the danger they’re running from. Even when the reveals start in the basement, the emotions read across each character’s face plays right into the fear of what’s coming and the shock of what’s been now realized. Jessa’s world has been turned upside down and it’s mirrored in these panels. The final page will have fans talking as that reveal hits readers with a huge exclamation point to close this chapter out on.

FINAL POINT: The frightening world of Barlowe, New York delivers a fantastic issue with sharp writing by Jordan mixed with excellent art from Revel. The mystery behind the Harrower starts to become clear with more questions than answers. The issue balances an intense opening with huge payoffs as the book progresses that readers won’t be ready for what transpires on the final page. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Pittsburgh has been dealing with “The Accountability Killer” mystery since May of 2022. In a little over a year, the city has dealt with a rising body count, copycat killers and a public broken down from the actions of “Richard Roe” aka Aaron Kern. Kern is behind bars but another victim has been killed with all signs pointing to No/One.

Louis Capel was found dead at an art exhibit. Capel was on No/One’s radar previously. Detectives August Singh and Kate Harper are on the case per Chief Mixon. Assistant chief Ben Kern (Aaron’s father) has his own reasons for investigating. Pittsburgh Ledger Editor Teddy Barlow and reporter Julia Paige are reporting on the case & using a podcast to get their findings out to the masses. The common thread connecting them all is a vigilante running across the rooftops. The question has become “Who is No/One” as Aaron Kern is residing at the Allegheny County Jail. Ben Kern meets with him after Capel’s death and after running into his estranged son Michael. Post meeting Ben is attacked by a mysterious figure and is saved by No/One himself! However, shortly there after, Michael is murdered in the street and more questions are raised.

The story now shifts to April 2023. Chief Mixon arrives at the home of Ben Kern, who is returning to work. During the car ride, Mixon holds nothing back as he asks Ben to step down. The recent events with Michael adds more fuel to the public fire. Ben is hesitant to listen to the Chief, but the conversation is interrupted by the police dispatch. Another body has been found in the form of Three Rivers University head football coach Nathan Cade. Four shots to the chest. Note left behind. The same calling card of No/One.

As the players take their place in the story, readers attention is directed back to the crime scene where Detectives Singh and Harper are asking possible witnesses questions. The interrogation is stopped when an officer sees a figure looming around: NO/ONE! The police are in hot pursuit! Can No/One outrun the law yet again? Readers are in for a treat as they see the vigilante have a formal confrontation with the police. The outcome sets up another series of events as Ben Kern pays someone another visit looking for more answers. This all builds towards a surprise final series of event that closes out this chapter. A shocking action hits the last page, leaving readers astounded to what they’ve just witnessed.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Buccellato delves deeper into the “Accountability Killer” with a very well-paced issue. Readers get a personal insight into what Ben Kern is going thru after the loss of his son Michael. Seeing him weather the public outcry about what his family is connected to has been one thing, but adding the weight of losing a child has pushed Ben to his boiling point. This is reflected later in the book with a conversation that fully illustrates the anger he’s going thru. The writers keep readers guessing with the overall picture but never let up on the suspense of the story. The Segway into showing the latest victim finally gives readers the first physical encounter between No/One and the police which doesn’t disappoint. It gives a solid break to the drama encompassing Ben while building up the latest event surrounding the city on edge.

Borges brings the stoic brave face of Ben Kern to readers multiple times during this issue The initial conversation with Chief Mixon gives a glimpse of how Ben is reacting and driven to ending this mystery once and for all. The emotional toll comes into play in the later part of the issue as Borges lets loose on Ben’s reaction to the events transpiring. This issue does have more action than readers have seen thus far in the series. There is a fantastic chase sequence involving No/One and the police that delivers nothing but a shot of adrenaline to the story. With how strong tensions have been, the scene plays out superbly to connect readers to how dangerous the police feel about No/One. There is much to enjoy with this issue.

FINAL POINT: The saga of the “Accountability Killer” swings focus onto one character’s reaction to events that keeping testing his patience and will. Higgins, Buccellato, Borges and the rest of the team do not let a panel go to waste with excellent writing and art. The story constructs to a jaw-dropping close making this an issue you simply can’t pass up on New Comic Book Day.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tribulation, New Mexico has become the center of mystery and endangerment with the emergence of a monster known as “the Duplicate” running around. In one attack, the monster murdered an entire family leaving behind Gabi as a sole witness. Riqui, a local bartender, has now become the protector of Gabi but clearly isn’t ready to deal with such a threat. Luckily (pending how you look at it), Erica Slaughter has re-emerged from hiding to take down the creature. Erica’s presence hadn’t gone unnoticed as the Order Of St. George has sent the vicious Cutter to Tribulation to end Erica once and for all. Along the way, Cutter has left a bloody trail behind with her murder of Erica’s longtime ally Big Gary Slaughter as her sick crowning achievement.

Cutter continues to put the pressure on Erica as she’s now framed Erica for the murders of Tribulation police officers inside their own station (that Cutter killed personally), and is assisting The Duplicate by making it a clone of Erica! With the walls closing in (along with another surprise from the Order en route to Tribulation), Erica escapes the police station with Gabi and Riqui wounded but ready to fight back.

This issue opens up with the aftermath of Cutter’s rampage at the police station. Cutter returns to the scene of the crime, with only one officer knowing Erica’s side of events. Cutter tries playing off the sheriff’s doubts about Erica until she realizes Erica has made a bold move: taking Cutter’s precious doll from her bag! This sends Cutter into a rage in front of the officers. Meanwhile Erica, Riqui and Gabi head to Riqui’s bar “The Luck Of The Irish” to get some assets for the upcoming fight. Riqui catches wind of Erica’s plan to use Gabi as bait to draw out the monster and there is a tense exchange of words. Erica is unfazed by Riqui’s reaction and pushes the group forward.

The trio sets up camp at a ranch Riqui’s uncle watches over. During this time, Erica unveils the plan to stop the monster and unloads the story behind her and the Order. The fallout from this is impactful not only to Gabi and Riqui but to the reader as well. Are the pair ready to embrace the world of Erica Slaughter head on? Can they actually stop the monster and Cutter? Before there is time for answers, the final act kicks into gear throwing one definitive statement to the reader in closing: the one enemy they cannot defeat is time.

BREAKDOWN: Wrapping up this arc, Tynion delivers a strong understanding of where things are heading to. The book is essentially broken down into three portions. Cutter’s story kicks things off with showing readers how she reacts to being on the defensive with the theft of her doll. Seeing the emotional breakdown finally gave Erica a much needed win. That play into the second section with Erica’s story with Gabi and Riqui. Since her arrival in Tribulation, Erica has played much close to the vest. Seeing that she is not ready for what she’s up against, the breakdown of plans is crucial in Erica re-building her confidence along with preparing her allies for the frightening places they look to be heading to next. The third portion re-affirms how things are progressing and challenges how/if Erica is ready for the challenges. Pacing works to cap off the current arc along with setting up the violent showdown forthcoming.

Dell’edera and Muerto ramp up the drama within these pages. Right from the start, they present Cutter as being in control until the doll is taken. The full page panel crafts how truly unhinged she is as Cutter looses control in front of the remaining officers about her doll. The trio’s story is presented with various emotional moments. From Riqui’s warning to Erica only to be countered by Erica’s stone faced numbness, the trio varies as the events begin taking their toll on them. The Ranch sequence of panels gives readers a look at how Erica is handling the events at hand. Her reaction to telling the pair about what they’re involved in evokes a solid reaction as to the weight of the situations at hand. The final act caps off how time is of the essence and is something not in Ercia’s favor. Solid final full page panel to close this issue & arc out with.

FINAL POINT: The latest chapter of Erica Slaughter’s adventure concludes with the looming sense of fear and doubt in the air. With a daunting task lying ahead, Erica is testes unlike she has ever been before. Tynion, Dell’edera, & Muerto bring forth the drama with exceptional art and writing, taking Erica into uncharted water with a sliver of hope to survive. Don’t miss this chapter on New Comic Book Day.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In their wildest dreams, the heroes of Angel Grove could never imagine that one of their most legendary foes could become even more of a threat. Yet, that is exactly what has happened with Rita Repulsa who has now become Mistress Vile. Vile made an immediate impact when she dismantled Lord Zedd and left him lying at her feet in front of the young heroes to witness. Since then, Matt aka The Green Ranger has become Vile’s prisoner. Alpha-1 has pledged allegiance to Vile’s vision and challenged the Rangers. Factor in that Zedd is now recovering from his defeat and plotting revenge, the Rangers are surrounded by Vile’s efforts with no way out.

This issue opens up with a flashback of Rita and Zedd’s first encounter on Spearo V. Rita attacked Zedd on behalf of her father, Master Vile. During the battle Zedd throws Rita a proposition to join with him, seeing that she has outreached her father’s role for her.

Back at Safehaven, the Omega Rangers base, Both teams are having a conference call with Zordon and the earth based allies about what to do about Mistress Vile. In the conversation, it is deducted that Vile is looking for a way into the Morphin Grid but needs help doing it. The Rangers have some time to prepare knowing a Morphin Arch would be needed and one is revealed to be on Earth, which causes some tensions to be raised. Zordon orders the Power Rangers to return but not everyone is on board to comply to his orders.

The young heroes don’t even have an option to catch up and talk when suddenly Vile takes the fight right to their doorstep! How can they be ready for this surprise attack? It is a moment that readers will be excited to watch unfold. Even with a great cameo conversation and those huge action panels, nothing and I MEAN NOTHING will top what happens within the final moments of this issue and who is involved! It is a very safe bet to say that all of the Power Rangers fandom will be buzzing about the closing image from this issue.

BREAKDOWN: Just when you think this run has already given readers all the surprises it can handle, Flores drops a HUGE final moment that no one is ready for! No spoilers on that as it is one to be witnessed and not ruined. As for the rest of the issue, the writing demonstrates the growing frustration Vile is causing within the Rangers unit. There are great character moments involving Tommy and Kimberly reflecting this. The reveal about the Morphin master ruins furthered the wedge even more. Vile’s attack has left even the most confident members of the Rangers team nervous as to what is to come. Pacing worked well giving the story breaks to focus on character moments, one of which builds toward the concluding image that is going to leave fans speechless.

Di Gainfelice does a great job balancing out the Rangers’ struggles with Vile’s moves with excellent action sequences. The personal conversation involving Tommy respectively will connect with readers as a reflection of their feelings of recent events. It’s levels out with the battle at Safehaven. The action panels waste no time speeding things along, showing how quickly Vile’s forces are moving. The art caps everything off with a high-effective parting shot to send readers the message that the stakes just got higher involving this conflict.

FINAL POINT: The impressive debut run from the creative team of Flores and Di Gianfelice (along with Angulo and Dukeshire) grows its’ legacy even more with their latest issue. Superb writing and art turns up the pressure on the Power Ranger teams with an even more ominous danger looming in the wings at this issue’s conclusion. BUFFY THE LAST VAMPIRE SLAYER SPECIAL #1 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a one-shot from Boom! Studios featuring a familiar name in the land of pop culture. If you grew up in the 90’s-early 2000’s, you are guaranteed to have heard the name of “Buffy” and immediately connected it with “Vampire Slayer”. From the initial movie in 1992 featuring Kristy Swanson in the title role to the memorable WB (pre-CW) show from 1997-2003 starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, the character has remained in the pop culture eye with no signs of slowing down via the various Buffy universe stories coming from Boom! Studios. One of those stories is Buffy The Last Vampire Slayer Special #1 by Casey Gilly, Joe Jaro, Maria Keane, Lea Caballero, Joana Lafuente and Ed Dukeshire. Let’s take a closer look at this special and see what unfolds, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story is set in London of an alternate future where Buffy Summers was the last Vampire Slayer until Thessaly, the daughter of Tara and Willow has now been chosen to become a slayer. Becoming a guardian over the new slayer (with help from Spike, a vampire and lover in this timeline, an older and wiser Buffy has now made it her mission to train Thessaly for her destined future. Excellent job by Boom! to write in the quick 101 paragraph to catch new readers up to speed on this series.

This story kicks off with Spike working with Thessaly on sharpening her skills. The banter is easy to connect as the rebellious teenager isn’t too keen on listening to elder advice. Thessaly is more focused on meeting up with Iris, her girlfriend. All the while, Buffy is working with Wren and Anya of the Watcher’s council on a possible lead on finding an old friend in the United States! What does this lead have to do with Thessaly? Can the new slayer handle the responsibility of the mantle? Will the team survive each other long enough to solve this mystery? Readers get taken on a fun adventure that mixed with great surprises along with “family” drama closing with a promising ending.

BREAKDOWN: Gilly builds an enjoyable tale focusing on the “family” dynamic of Thessaly, Spike and Buffy. With a new slayer to train, Buffy tries balancing being a supportive maternal figure with being tough on training Thessaly for the dangers to come. Thessaly is a “normal” teenager with her interactions. Seeing how she’s learning control of her abilities will stand out to readers. Solid reveals heading into the latter portion of the story. The final moments concludes with an interesting ending that I’m sure readers won’t see the last of this universe in the future.

Multiple artists on this book kept things moving at a solid pace. Thessaly’s powers stood out as big events when used in those panels. The quieter scenes with Buffy and Thessaly helped connect readers to the building of their bond which progresses as the issue goes on. Once the biggest reveal happens, it comes across as a huge deal and one that readers will immediately see a shift in the story. The final pages tie up loose ends before sending the characters off with some great personal moments.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

When the combined front of the Teenage Mutant Ninnja Turtles and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers defeated Rita Repulsa and Shreddar, all parties knew that trouble would come back around sooner than later. Six months after that encounter, Casey Jones (TMNT ally) went missing after looking for Shreddar. Shortly there, Baxter Stockman (TMNT villain) was freed from jail with an assist from Ranger X, the new identity of Casey Jones! With the good guys reeling from Jones’ change, the forces of evil launch an attack on the Power Rangers Command center. With Zordon in immediate danger, a surprise figure enters the battle to defend him: Shreddar?!

This issue wastes no time hitting the ground running with Shreddar jumping in the fight. It buys enough time for Alpha to get Zordon to safety but Jason (Red Ranger) and Tommy (Green Ranger) stay with Shreddar/ All the while Stockman and Ranger X hit the rangers in a big way. They trigger a fault in their morphin powers! Now left powerless due to the Morphin Grid being hacked, the heroes have to run and leave the command center in the possession of Rita Repulsa and Krang!

Once the heroes reconvene, Shreddar appears and makes his intentions known. He hasn’t become a hero. He is fueled by revenge for being ousted by Krang after the last defeat. It’s solid motivation as it appears Rita is on the verge of conquering, using Angel Grove as their playground. Can the heroes come back? An idea is thrown to the group, but it’s worth a shot to see if it can tip the fight back in their favor. Readers won’t believe what they see as the good guys mount their attack! If anyone thinks that’s big just wait until another player in this game makes a shocking move setting a small team of heroes into a familiar place but with a dangerous figure joining them in the final moment.

BREAKDOWN: Excellent work by Parrott ramping up the surprises throughout this issue. Just when things look bleak, the heroes come up with a crazy idea for dealing with the Morphin Grid being hacked and it works SO well! Readers will enjoy this sequence immensely. Throwing Shreddar into the mix as a “frenemy” also provides a unique dynamic for the heroes. Knowing how dangerous he is, the lingering tension haunts these scenes and presents more challenges as the story progresses. Pacing is never an issue here and with all the characters involved in big battles, no one felt overshadowed or lost. It’s a skill that Parrott pulls off perfectly each time it is presented in any story he does. The big surprise reveal late in this chapter is a great addition to this story. Readers will be thrown for another loop but it’s a fascinating play that connects easily to the situation at hand. Excellent final banter from the heroes to close out the latest installement moving things towards the final act.

The best artist in comics today continues to level this story up. Dan Mora makes the smallest action moments feel HUGE. The battle for the command center has key moments but it’s exclamation point is actually Rita’s demonic smile at the havoc she created. The moment everyone will be talking about though is how the heroes deal with not having the powers from the Morphin Grid. No spoilers but Mora gives it a enormous debut and the following action will blow readers away. It’s counter-balanced when a character makes a big reveal late in the book. The emotional reactions give those scenes more gravity as it sends the story into a new direction.

FINAL POINT: The combined fandoms of MMPR and TMNT will be on the edge of their seats for the action and drama unfolding in the latest chapter of the epic sequel crossover. Parrott, Mora and the team keep raising the bar with amazing writing and phenomenal art. There is much to be excited about within these pages, so make a point to pick this series up at the local comic shop!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Since the conclusion of issue #100, the Power Rangers haven’t had a moment to catch a break. After investigating a disturbance on the moon, they (along with readers) are in complete shock seeing Lord Zedd, their longtime nemesis lying motionless and defeated at the feet of a familiar face. That person is the former Rita Repulsa who has now become Mistress Vile! Making an immediate impact, she takes a prisoner in the form of Matt, the green ranger! Zedd defeated…Matt Captured….the Rangers are becoming increasingly frustrated at the fact they can’t stop Vile. After a signal from the planet Casentine indicates the Red Omegazord is in trouble, the heroes investigate to find Alpha-1 waiting for them.

Last issue featured Vile’s origin and an idea of where Matt’s future is heading. This issue jumps to five days prior with catching up with the Omega Rangers, whom readers haven’t seen since issue #100. After a quick catch-up with Zach, Trini, Yale and Kevor, readers see that they were on their way to the planet Casentine. The story jumps to present time where the Power Rangers (from Earth) confront Alpha-1. It is quickly established for anyone doubting that this Alpha is anything but a friend. Meanwhile on Earth, Tommy and Billy are assessing recent events with an unconscious Zedd lying next to them on a medical bed. Readers can see the anger and frustration pouring out of Tommy as he questions Billy about recent activities. All the while, Aplha-1 challenges the earth Rangers where he is getting the upper hand…until Trini and Yale show up! Can they swing the odds into the heroes favor?

Back on Earth, someone has awoken and that spells trouble for everyone. How does Zordon react to this revelation? Can the combined efforts of Power and Omega stop Alpha-1? What does Kimberly and Trini find out concerning Mistress Vile? Where are Zach and Kevor? There are many questions raised heading into the next phase of Vile’s plans and readers have much to look forward to with this issue.

Flores takes Vile off the board for this issue, allowing all the major players to get some panel time (along with seeing some old friends). Pacing worked very well to hit all the marks. Many readers have wondered when they would see the Omega Rangers again and this worked as a nice re-introduction back. Their part is significant enough but not overstepping the current story set-up. Seeing Alpha-1 as a legit threat was a nice add to the story. The fallout from its’ portion of the issue will be one to watch moving forward. The Tommy/Billy sub-portion gave the readers an insight to how desperate the situation has become. However, the one character to watch coming out of this issue is Lord Zedd. Seeing the ultimate bad guy defeated and weakened makes him an even more dangerous character. What levels is he willing to go to get revenge for being defeated? Overall, solid job juggling all the characters for this chapter.

Di Gianfelice mixes things up with big action panels and simpler, but equally as impactful personal moments with the various team members. The panels with Zach and Trini along with Tommy’s discussion with Billy are perfect examples of those emotional moments. It’s countered with BIG action pages when Alpha-1 takes on the Rangers. In a few short panels, Alpha-1 demonstrates why its’ a big challenge for the Rangers to handle. There is an excellent full page panel involving Zords that will be a fan-favorite relating to that fight. Seeing a broken Zedd will also have fans buzzing about what’s next to unfold for him.

MONARCH #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new title from Image Comics that has been making a tremendous buzz around comic fans. After seeing who’s creating this story, there’s no question on why the buzz is as big as it is! MONARCH #1 by Rodney Barnes (KILLADELPHIA, BLACULA, HBO's “Winning Time”), Alex Lins (NEW MUTANTS), and Luis Nct (SLEEPERS FABLE) presents a very captivating sci-fi story that challenges a young boy to face insurmountable odds head on. Let’s not delay and jump right into a deeper dive of this debut issue, shall we?

MONARCH #1 - On sale February 8th, 2023

Creative: Rodney Barnes, Alex Lins, and Luis Nct

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue opens up with a narrator explaining this scene from ten hours prior. The narrator here is a young girl named Daysha. who’s running through what looks like a warzone, but it’s actually a schoolyard. With energy blasts being fired around her, Daysha is waved into shelter by a teacher until he is hit in the face with an energy blast and dies instantly. Daysha goes thru the hallway where more people are standing. She shifts her eyes to Todd, a young boy on the staircase. When she reaches for him, it appears a beam has hit the building, eluding to the worst. Readers see an energy force heading to Earth. The scene shifts to the City of Compton as a pink cloud looms overhead with the residents watching and waiting to see what happens next.

The story shifts to a young boy named Travon waking up for school. He looks out the window to see the pink cloud looking overhead. As he gets ready for school, he talks with his god-sister, Marli and his foster mother Miss Wilamae, who gives a concerned warning to watch out for danger in the form of Zion. Readers soon learn of that danger as Travon has to escape Zion’s anger on the way to school. With an assist from Daysha, Travon eludes Zion, but not without a promise to get him by day’s end.

After meeting with Todd, Daysha and Travon have a conversation on the school roof. At this point, readers find out why Zion hates Travon so much and with this looming, Travon is optimistic with his time with Daysha. However that moment is short lived as Zion jumps Travon later in the day. While Zion is punching away, the cloud in the sky makes its’ secret revealed. Their fighting stops but another battle begins as readers see what (or who) caused the opening moments of the book.

The story then jumps to three weeks later. Who survived what happened on that fateful day? With a future this bleak, Travon’s options are limited. What actions does he take now? Travon’s bravery in these times has shined but is it enough? The final moments of the book will throw readers for a curve and ends the book on a very unique moment, guaranteeing to bring people back for more.

Incredible first issue. Barnes sets the tone early with the opening scene. Showing Daysha running thru the schoolyard while energy blasts gave great foreshadowing for the danger coming without playing its’ full hand. Having the story shift to Travon’s normal life made connecting with him as a character to root for very easy. The conflict with him and Zion grounds this story as well. The time jumps didn’t take away anything from the overall story. The final act really ramps up the drama with a huge surprise that is only adding to the mystery of this book.

Another thing to note is the letter monologue colors. Seeing the events unfold thru Daysha (Red), Travon (Green) and Zion (Blue)’s eyes was an excellent add. There’s a lot to enjoy from the storytelling here.

Lins and Nct make every panel count as they balance out both stories here. The first one is the sci-fi element. In its’ introduction, the damage is huge and nothing is held back showing the effect its’ having on the people inside the school. The other story is Travon’s normal life. Showing the emotions and reactions of the first time readers see Travon with Marti and Miss Miss Wilamae made for a bigger reaction when Zion makes his appearance. Once the initial attack starts, the art makes a big factor in showing how dangerous the cloud’s reveal truly is. Excellent final arc demonstrating the high emotion tension and shocking close to this chapter.

FINAL POINT: Monarch #1 is a fantastic tale mixing in the worlds of science-fiction and grounded reality drama that you simply can’t miss out on. Barnes, Lins and Nct invite readers in with exceptional writing and artwork to see how a young boy steps up to face challenges beyond anyone’s understanding. If this book isn’t in your hands on New Comic Book Day, fix it quick.

DAMN THEM ALL #4 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to a brand new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

DAMN THEM ALL #4 by Simon Spurrier, Charlie Adlard, Sofie Dodgson, Shayne Hannah Cui, and Jim Campbell has Ellie facing off with the mysterious Theo Bolster, a man who’s organization may be more than even she is capable of stopping their true agenda. After last issue’s conclusion, Ellie and her ally Dora are in enemy territory with no easy way out. How do the pair fend now with Theo and the secrets of the 500 club?

Editor warning: this book has some panels that might be too mature for younger readers. That said, let’s jump into the latest chapter and see where Ellie and company take readers now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

First and foremost, check out that DAN MORA cover!!!

In case you are new to the story, Ellie has now been tasked to fill in the vacancy caused by her Uncle Alfie’s mysterious death as the only one to stop the 72 devils of the Ars Goetia from running wild over this world. The mission is so simple on paper: send them all back to Hell by any means possible. Execution? well, that’s another story. Luckily, Ellie has an ally in Dora, an officer with a complicated past with her uncle Alfie. Now accepting the duties of her uncle, Ellie sets forth to complete her mission.

Since she started in the role, Ellie has come across many unique characters such as Pruflas, who provides some much needed information about what is happening. Demons are now running amongst the earth via coins in the possession of various humans. Some with more noble intentions than others. Last issue saw what happens when the wrong person has a magical coin in their grasp. Ellie and Dora (along with Carlin, who’s there cause “reasons”) investigate Theo and the 500 club’s headquarters. Walking inside, the trio is shocked to see bodies, and that Theo is in possession of many coins like easy candy.

This issue opens up with a recap of Theo’s origin. Readers witness the 500 club conjuring Andras, a huge owl-headed demon who takes care of a few members before removing Theo’s eyes which much pleasure. The story then shifts to the fallout from there and a sub-plot involving Abshir, a man who fell from grace as London’s mayor. From that break, Ellie and Theo start debating about the ”big picture” involving the coins and Theo’s involvement in her uncle’s death. The result is Ellie taking a swing and busting Theo’s nose. The action is countered with Theo showing off what power he has at his disposal, healing from the attack. With Ellie not joining Theo’s vision, he dismisses her and Dora only to provoke a demon attack outside the headquarters.

With Theo waiting to make a scene, he causes a demon battle outside by forcing Frankie Wax (mob boss who Ellie now works for) to use his coin in battle. The visuals are insane, but what’s even more wild is ho this encounter ends. Nobody sees what is about to unfold coming but readers are in for a crazy conclusion of this first arc and a sense of direction for the book moving onward from here.

Spurrier drops major moments throughout this issue. Seeing the game he’s trying to play with Ellie has a great dynamic to watch. Being in the position of power he’s in, Theo isn’t feeling any true threat from Ellie. His ego drives him to start the spectacle outside the headquarters. It’s equally matched by Ellie’s counter attack to his move. The mental chess game played out well for readers to sit back and watch. Theo not realizing what Ellie was setting up heading into the closing moments sets them on an inevitable rematch. The closing panels solidifies Ellie has taken the legacy of her uncle as her own, for better or for worse and that’s a big win for readers of this series.

Adlard brings this supernatural world to life with vivid imagery. Andras’s debut felt like the big moment it was. How he initially attacks Theo played out as a driving point of Theo’s character later in the story. The strongest art was the demon battle outside the 500 estate. Seeing the “Legion Of Inferior Spirits” play out on panel worked for crafting a big time frame in this story. One additional component of this book is the note breakdown of demons thrown in to explain to readers. It gives an added piece to an ever growing cast. This worked magnificently in explaining the huge figures involved in said battle. The final image in closing is one that is defining of the character and where Ellie looks to be taking her mission moving forward from this experience.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Six months have gone by since the combined forces of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles defeated Rita Repulsa and Shredder. The turtles have taken a trip to Angel Grove to catch up with their friends while Casey Jones has been looming in New York City looking for leads on the whereabouts of Shredder. During his investigating, Jones is attacked by Karai, the protege of Shreddar and an off panel figure with a sinister warning. Time passes but when news breaks of Jones going missing, Tommy (the Green Ranger) and Raphael start looking. All the while, there is a prison break for Baxter Stockman from forces connected to Shreddar and Rita. The comibined TMNT and MMPR teams arrive along with a returning Casey to intervene. That is until Casey reveals himself to be an evil Ranger helping Stockman escape!

This issue jumps in with the villain team along with Stockman appearing before the throne of an old Rangers foe: Mistress Vile! She lays out a decree of plans to take over the earth shortly. Meanwhile back in New York City, the MMPR and TMNT teams start forming a plan of their own to get Casey back. It is also revealed that someone has been kidnapping rogues of both teams for a time now. The clash of personalities starts bubbling up but ultimately cooler heads prevail. Zordon and Master Splinter converse while the teams focus on some training.

Meanwhile back in Dimension X, Krang confornts Casey or “Ranger X” in this case, questioning his motives. Rita appears and it’s revealed how she has him under her control. It also appears Krang might have been the assailant to capture Casey with Karai. During their talk, it appears Shreddar is still a person of interest lurking in the shadows. Rita doesn’t take long to wait to attack as a giant portal is opened over Angel Grove with a super army of rogues walking thru behind Rita.

The teams have been waiting or this moment but need something extra to step up for this fight. Fans will be super excited to see what happens with the heroes. Meanwhile Scorpina, Baxter, Rock Steady and Casey/Ranger X make their way to the command center , home of Zordon! Luckily for him, they’re greeted by a few heroes ready to fight. The action kicks into high gear with a few key plot moments fused in. With all the high-paced moving parts here, no one is ready for the final image to cap off what a thrilling take this issue was.

Parrott excels at getting all these characters equal time to add to the overall story. Even when all hell breaks loose when Rita leads her army to Angel Grove, nothing ever felt rushed or forced. Pacing worked to build Rita’s overall plans while giving a small break to move Casey’s story forward without overshadowing. The same can be said when the teams meet to discuss what has happened with Casey and Raphael’s emotions of frustration pouring then later the conversation between Zordon and Master Splinter. Each moment is key for various reasons, yet nothing oversteps. Structuring these events only makes the battle scenes connect every harder with the readers. The action delivers on showcasing the various parings and made for great breaks from the drama. The final moments builds to its’ shocking reveal masterfully to close out on a major point heading into the next chapter.

Mora + action scenes = Money! the later half of this chapter is all full throttle panels with both teams letting loose on the ensuing battles. There’s a great full page shot of both teams “assembling” after a two page spread officially announces Rita’s army into the battlefield. Right form these moments, readers can feel the anticipation for whats about to go down! Mora’s panels carry that excitement straight thru the conclusion of this issue. The emotions are there especially when it deals with Raphael and Casey/Ranger X. Seeing Raphael’s eyes after hearing a line come from Casey said more than any word bubble could. This high-level art never slowed downed, even with all the building towards the final moments. Excellent closing image to carry readers onward to the next chapter.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

If new to this series, a group of monster hunters have recruited Mercy’s services in the fight against evil. The previous seasons have taken mercy on quite the ride. Season Four began with a stop in Rumania, before time jumping to 1997 where a young “Becky,” who is revealed to be a younger version of Mercy (along with allies Ratmir and Jill Anderson) are waiting at the home of Becky’s Grandmother. Unfortunately, the group is looking a a twenty year wait. However, readers don’t wait as the story shifts to the planet Tertiarus and its’ protector Alizarine.

During that time, Tertiarus hasn’t fallen yet. Alizarine and (adult) Mercy are captured by sky pirates led by Absolm Mooncrow. Mooncrow knows what kind of price Mercy would command and how the the Pantheon of Tertiarus would read his actions. Like all good plans, they are not easy as his ship becomes under attack. Mooncrow, Mercy and Alizarine form an uneasy alliance to handle the attack but not before long, the double crosses begin.

This issue jumps in with Mercy drawing a blade to Mooncrow as Alizarine is in danger after helping the pirates deal with their threat. Only when cooler heads prevail, everyone is freed from their immediate dangers on the ship. That said, there is no time to celebrate their win. Mooncrow’s ship flies in the direction of what is the biggest Kroach thus far. Mooncrow announces that the creature is the Harvester, the end all-be all of the Kroach.

From here, readers get a quick tutorial of the impact this creature has. During this talk, a revelation is made and one no one will see coming! What character is connected to the Deathless of the Kroach the most? It’s a great reveal and one that drives the majority of this issue. The flashback sequence features many levels to how determined one is about defeating this evil and at what cost? From that points’ conclusion, someone makes a move that changes the dynamic between these characters forever. It’s a drastic move, but then again, these are drastic times. Excellent final moment to end this issue on.

Starkings sets up a great origin story for the threat of the Harvester. One the connection is made to readers of the major character to the deathless, the book’s mood changes accordingly. That character’s motivation to save Tertiarus has never been in question, but the methods shown in their plan provides a sense of desperation and guilt more than brave heroics. The tragic tale of the Deathless was balanced out very well by the reaction to this reveal. The Pantheon of Tertiarus keeps getting shown in different lights, which Starkings does a masterful job in presenting.

Hardings keeps the fantasy imagery rolling with this issue. The full-blown page shot of the Harvester gave readers a direct message of how serious this threat is. The moment when the Deathless’s connection is to one major character played out perfectly. From the shock on that character’s face to the travel back to a more prosperous time in Tertiarus, Harding delivers on the emotion of the moment and the ultimate despair of accepting failure. The final act pulls no punches as the desperation spreads even more to the ending visual to carry thru to next issue.

FINAL POINT: Ask For Mercy #4 takes a small detour into the past but the future pay-off hits big! *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Power Rangers have been thru so much since the epic saga of “Charge To 100.” With an investigation of a disturbance on the moon, the young heroes had no idea what they were going to see unfold! Lord Zedd, their infamous adversary is lying at the feet of a returning, yet new figure in the Power Rangers Universe. Rita Repulsa has emerged with a new identity of Mistress Vile and taking care of Zedd sent shockwaves thru the Rangers. However, her next actions drive a deeper wound into the team. Vile captures Matt, the green ranger and is on the run! With desperation and frustration setting in for finding Matt, the team gets a signal that the red omegazord is on the planet Casentine. Once they arrive, they don’t find Matt or the Omega Rangers, but find Alpha-1 waiting for them at the downed zord.

This issue kicks off with an update for the readers about Matt. Along with torture, Vile is also trying to break Matt mentally and starts going into how similar they both are. From here, readers settle in for the origin of how Rita has become Mistress Vile. Dated a few months back (along with a two-page recap of Rita’s notable moments), Rita has been banished into space from Lord Zedd for failing to conquer Earth. Drifting away, she is discovered by space pirates led by Divatox, who say there is quite the bounty for Rita’s return to her home of Gamma Vile and her father, Master Vile. Once the family reunion starts, it’s the beginning of the end of Rita and the era of Mistress Vile starts.

The reunion is overshadowed by Master Vile’s ultimate goal coming to possible fruition. What plan does Master Vile have in store here? Who is he trying to connect with? How does Alpha-1 tie into those plans? How does Rita’s return impact everything? Readers witness how love of family is trumped by love of power. The final act carries a great build-up and pay-off explaining most lingering questions. However, readers will need to brace for the impact of Vile’s master plan with the final panels here.

The story behind Rita’s evolution was an excellent read. Flores sets things up to display how ruthless Rita can be and how her new status quo hasn’t even begun to plateau. The relationship with her father proved to be a double-edged sword in the sense of how Rita being back meant a great deal, only to be pushed aside by his own master plans and self accolades. Once established, readers watched along as she went to work assessing and ultimately manipulating control of the situation. Reintroducing a character with such notable history can be difficult, but Flores pulls this off masterfully with giving Rita a layered origin into her new persona. With that said, Take nothing away from the impact of the final page, as those few panels will have fans reacting strongly as the endgame is revealed very quietly. Incredible issue.

The artists on this issue (Simona Di Gianfelice & Kath Lobo) present Rita’s rebirth with some excellent panels. The two page spread showing her “this is your life” timeline jumps out. It’s a great piece for new readers to get caught up quick on what the character is all about and a great refresher for older fans. The panels with Master Vile “reuniting” with his daughter also stand out as Rita’s reaction to hearing her father’s plan spun into scheming and planning which gave a bigger pay-off when the plan unfolded. Rita’s constant evil smile carries through this issue and gives readers the visual que that she’s been in control this entire time, whether others knew or not. While this issue focuses all on Vile’s origin, the final panels will connect with readers as they see what Vile’s current manipulation is about to cause. It’s not a huge moment persay but once readers see what’s unfolding, it will hit BIG.

Take about a huge reveal. Booher gives readers much information about the glasses and no one is ready for the origin behind them. It’s a big moment and one Kenny struggles to understand and accept. It’s also a great twist and plays into the throwback feel of this book exceptionally. Specs never fails to disappoint in this manner. Booher keeps taking these characters on such an emotional trip. Kenny’s frantic search for clues and what can he do to save his best friend pushes this story forward. All the drama build-up has a huge payoff and the final moment of this chapter will leave readers excited and nervous all the same.

Shehan pushes the desperation and fear factor of Kenny’s story right off the bat this issue. Seeing his best friend got to jail for a crime he didn’t really commit* (well kinda of) pushes Kenny into a defeated state grasping for any signs to fix things. The reveal about the glasses was a huge surprise and the art depicted the evil behind it. The imagery fit right into the dark story. seeing how Kenny reacted was another strong visual moment. The final page drives home to readers we are entering the final stage and it’s anyone’s guess how this book concludes when it does.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tribulation, New Mexico has a monster problem, literally. An evil creature is on the loose. Erica has re-emerged from hiding to protect the lone survivor of its’ initial attack and stop the creature from killing more. Erica has become a reluctant ally to Riqui, a bartender who is the “guardian” of Gabi, a teenager who watched her family be slaughtered.

All the while, the Order of St. George looks to tie up the loose end known as Erica Slaughter by having Cutter take her out. In a short time, Cutter has been systematically striking Erica with personal blows and precise planning. At the end of last issue, she helps the creature turn into a “duplicate” of Erica, framing her for more killings. Now on the move, Erica is a wounded target trying to figure out what’s next.

This issue kicks off with Erica, Riqui and Gabi driving to the police station. Gabi has a conversation with Erica about her “companion” which reveals how Erica making a stand might get everyone killed. As they arrive at the station, Erica is arrested on sight for “murders across the country” due to the manipulations of a “federal agent” on the Sheriff. Erica tries warning of the set-up but the sheriff won’t listen and takes all three into the station.

With Gabi and Riqui kept inside a locked office at the station and Erica handcuffed to the interrogation table, the agent appears. Cutter has now arrived at the front door ready to confront Erica.

What unfolds next is a frightening scenario of events. Readers will not be ready for Cutter’s next moves. Has Cutter committed checkmate on Erica? is there any hope to survive what’s coming next? The final moments of this book will shake readers up and you won’t be able to wait for the next issue to see how everything plays out.

Absolutely fantastic issue. The issue is constructed perfectly in its pacing. Tynion takes his time setting up events for the dramatic closing moments. The build works as Erica knows what’s about to unfold and can do nothing about it. This sense of despair will hit with readers and only adds more impact when Cutter arrives. In only a few pages, the plan of attack Cutter demonstrates sinks in and will haunt readers for what’s next. It’s brutal, unforgiving and gives the sense that Erica won’t survive this time, which is what every great antagonist should be presenting.

The artwork by Dell’edera & Muerto brings Cutter’s twisted plans to life without holding anything back. From the moment Cutter arrives at the station, the feel of the book shifts with such tension. Seeing how psychotic Cutter is with her plans’ execution was an intense visual to play out. It’s only matched by the frustration of Erica who slips further into doubt of finding a way out of this. One of the final images solidifies that frustration carrying readers into the next issue.

FINAL POINT: One of the great strengths of SIKTC is when they play a slow build, the payoff never disappoints. This rings true again with this issue. Tynion, Dell’edera, Muerto & the team ramp up the drama with incredible storytelling and art to push Erica into a dire situation with very little signs of hope. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This story kicks off in the city of Kiros. Kiros is described as “the last city in the known world.” Readers discover that many years ago, there was peace made after a devastating war. Now in a state of tranquility, it would appear that things in Kiros should be great. However, it does not seem to be the case. Readers get ushered into a big example of how there’s still danger lurking within the city limits with many different characters living together in this fantastic new world.

A sea-like figure known as a “Maid” (note the fishtales) emerges from the Lagoon, an area within Kiros. The maid appears to die on shore in front of a group of fellow maids. Right behind them, a Elf-human named Dace also emerges lifeless and crashes near the deceased maid, with the group dispersing.

The story now shifts to Merchant Row where readers get introduced to Detective Phaedra Essex, known for wearing a Black Cloak to be identified as law enforcement.Essex handles a routine issue with one of the inhabitants of Kiros, a goat/human-esque figure before getting called away to what will be a shocking crime scene that she won’t be ready for.

That scene is located above the Salty Crow in an apartment in the Narrows. A fellow Black Cloak named Pax is investigating a dead body with royal ink on their arm. The body turns out to be Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the throne!

From here, Essex reveals a bombshell to Pax involving the deceased! The pair now starts to investigate Freyal’s death. First stop is to the Salty Crow, where more clues are revealed about Freyal. Once back at the station, the pair are called to the lagoon and now investigate the bodies found earlier in the issue.

How/Are they connected to Freyal? With more clues and a rising body count, readers won’t be ready for the next steps in the investigation. The tension keeps building and hits a certain peak when Essex gets clearence to meet with the royalty of Kiros with Freyal’s passing. Those scenes are impactful but get ready for the fallout. Talk about a debut issue! With all the complexity of introducing readers to a fantasy world, at its’ core, Black Cloak is an engaging thriller. Thompson establishes that right from the start and never lets that sway what is unfolding here. There are many characters and figures making first impressions but none shine brighter that Detective Phaedra Essex. The character of Essex is a multi-layered figure as her connection to the murder victim drives the story into new directions. In a way, Essex becomes an enigma herself. There is no bigger (or better) example of this than when she meets with the Queen to inform her of Freyal’s death. As that business trip expands, questions become raised about Essex that plant the foundation for bigger answers later in the series. The partnership between Essex and Pax is another strong element in this book. It is very easy to pick up that the pair have been working together for a while and are committed to solving this high profile case with Pax making sure Essex can handle working it with all the emotional baggage involved. For being an over-sized issue, the story moves pretty steady without ever feeling like the leads are dwelling too long on any scene. The writing will lock you in from page one and doesn’t let go till the exclamation point put at the end of the issue!

With as fantastic as the story and writing is, McClaren and Carey match the drama and excitement of this story perfectly. With the fantasy element of Kiros, the characters all have distinctive looks. From the maids in the lagoon to proprietors of the Salty Crow to the Police Station characters and more, Kiros lives up to the “last city in the known world” with all the different residents. The city has many elements to it and for a first issue, it showcased enough to hook people in to find out more. Seeing Essex’s reactions to what unfolds in this issue is also noteworthy. McClaren never keeps the reader guessing on how Phaedra is reacting to a moment. The world of Kiros also is featured to readers as a place where more is going on that anyone realizes. There are many panels that will stand out but none might be greater than the final one page panel to end this issue on. Get ready for that!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins with a man by the name of Marvin Mosely saying goodbye to his family. The reason being a secret “teaching” job that will last a year. Mosely’s motivations are good as his work will help lead to a better tomorrow. As he says goodbye to his wife and daughter, readers get a small glimpse of his mission at hand. Mosely is led to a controlled habitat residential setting. As he walks into his residence, he now meets his “pupil” an android named Six. Guillory presents a great question about how much technology can impact human life with this series. Mosely went from buying into to the optimism promised from working with his pupil Six to being very jaded and bitter about the current world he lives in. Readers witness his anger over how things are now and see how that will push him moving forward. The conversations he has between human and machine throughout this book are poignant for the times they usher in. How did someone who cared so much for a “better tomorrow” become so angered by a complacent today? Filling in the gap from how things arrived at this point will make for a great story.

Lotfi welcomes readers into Mosely’s world with some very impressive visuals. There are some great two page spreads that will stand out. The one is with Mosely leaving the school with the futuristic skyline in the backdrop. It’s simple in set-up but once readers see the next two-page visual directly after, it shows how far the world has advanced with people in that skyline and how Mosely doesn’t appear to want to have anything to do with it. The final moments throw an interesting change in the status quo. It’s an unforseen move but one that closes things out with much mystery heading into next issue.

Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo make up the heroes in the half shell known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. On the other side of this story is Jason (Red Ranger), Billy (Blue Ranger), Zach (Black Ranger), Trini (Yellow Ranger), Tommy (Green Ranger) and Kimberly (Pink Ranger) who compose the legends known as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

The last time these 2 groups came across each other, they were united in stopping Rita Repulsa and Shredder. The first series is an absolute must read. This story (which is NOT connected to the current MMPR series arc) is set six month after its’ conclusion.

The story opens up in New York City with Casey Jones, the notorious TMNT ally, chasing down Karai, the protege of Shreddar. With her master being gone since the ending of MMPR/TMNT 1, there is some concern from Casey about his whereabouts and rightfully so. One of the most dangerous beings of any universe has gone off radar? That can’t be anything good. However, an unseen assailant attacks Casey before he gets an answer.

One week later in Angel Grove (hometown for MMPR), the teams (along with TMNT ally April O’Neal) are trying to be “normal” out in the public but a fault image inducer might put that good idea in danger. All the while, April brings up concern for Rita being in the shadows an waiting for bad news to happen.

Back at the Power Rangers Command Center, Billy is working with Donatello on the image inducer while Jason and Leonardo are training. Readers witness the two share thoughts about their teammates before the tale shifts gears back to New York. Raphael and Tommy are alerted to Casey Jones’s disappearance and now go searching for him. What or who does the pair meet up with along the way? What other forces are at play that draw out both teams? The action kicks into high gear and readers are in for a BIG surprise before a final pairing shot that caps off the event’s initial outing.

One of the best in the industry does it again! Parrott is back at the helm for the sequel and doesn’t miss a beat picking up where things left off. Readers will look forward to great interactions between members of both teams. The pairing of Tommy and Raphael works so well for this beginning issue. This is the one that will stand out amongst the others, which all have solid points that they hit. Parrott gives every major player enough time to get their moments in while setting up for a bigger event later in the issue. It is a game-changer and one that sets a high tempo for the rest of the series to follow. Readers will be excited to see where things are heading towards now after a huge reveal late in the book. Very chilling line to complement the reveal with before ending this portion of the story…..and this is JUST the first issue! If this is any indication of what to expect, fans better get ready for something epic within this series.

Before we get into the art review, how incredibly AMAZING is this image from Dan Mora?!?!?!?!

Mora absolutely crushes this issue! Right from the initial encounter with Karai and Casey, Mora brings a high paced feel to the action scenes. This is leveled out with the character moments between the turtles and the rangers. One of the best example of this is when Billy is talking with Donatello after the image inducer breaks down. Seeing Don’s reflection of being a Power Ranger from the first crossover and longing to connect with the morphin energy again jumps out and showcases how these characters mesh well. The Leo/Jason training segment was also very solid in showing how similar they are and what they feel about both groups. As great as these images are, Mora’s set-up of the first team-up within this issue will blow fans away. There is a two-page spread that will kick off a big battle that readers can’t help but be excited to see what happens next. Excellent final parting shot to close out the first issue.

FINAL POINT: With an event involving two of the biggest fandoms in pop culture, the expectation levels are astronomical. That said, Parrott, Mora and company kick things off with a debut issue you can’t pass up. The fantastic story is matched panel for panel with excellent writing to make this an event that needs to be in your pull list each time out. Don’t miss it!

The story unraveling in this issue proves to be a solid companion to the other series while standing on its’ own. Maxine’s tale kicks off with an interesting challenge that (to my knowledge) hasn’t been brought up before. Switching Masks isn’t as simple as grabbing a new veil. Seeing how impactful this can be add more weight to what readers expect from each group.

The writing fully breaks down everything involved with the order and is a great reference point to characters in these books. The breakdowns do not take anything away from Maxine’s quest for knowledge. The finale lives up to the build. It will make for some interesting stories following the end of this chapter.

The artwork stands on its own as well. At this book’s core, it’s all about Maxine’s choice more that the background of the order. Take nothing away from that presentation. It stood out and presents much clarity behind this mysterious place. What readers will take away more is the emotional toll Maxine is hit with during her decisions.

The impact of Aaron Slaughter affected more than anyone (including) the Order realized. The conversations between Cecilia and Maxine convey those feelings with the panel breakdown of the car ride right after seeing Aaron’s body. The final image leaves no doubt about how things are changing for the Order. Readers should be expecting big repercussions from this issue moving forward.
