If new to this series, a group of monster hunters have recruited Mercy’s services in the fight against evil. The previous seasons have taken mercy on quite the ride. Season Four began with a stop in Rumania, before time jumping to 1997 where a young “Becky,” who is revealed to be a younger version of Mercy (along with allies Ratmir and Jill Anderson) are waiting at the home of Becky’s Grandmother. Unfortunately, the group is looking a a twenty year wait. However, readers don’t wait as the story shifts to the planet Tertiarus and its’ protector Alizarine.

During that time, Tertiarus hasn’t fallen yet. Alizarine and (adult) Mercy are captured by sky pirates led by Absolm Mooncrow. Mooncrow knows what kind of price Mercy would command and how the the Pantheon of Tertiarus would read his actions. Like all good plans, they are not easy as his ship becomes under attack. Mooncrow, Mercy and Alizarine form an uneasy alliance to handle the attack but not before long, the double crosses begin.

This issue jumps in with Mercy drawing a blade to Mooncrow as Alizarine is in danger after helping the pirates deal with their threat. Only when cooler heads prevail, everyone is freed from their immediate dangers on the ship. That said, there is no time to celebrate their win. Mooncrow’s ship flies in the direction of what is the biggest Kroach thus far. Mooncrow announces that the creature is the Harvester, the end all-be all of the Kroach.

From here, readers get a quick tutorial of the impact this creature has. During this talk, a revelation is made and one no one will see coming! What character is connected to the Deathless of the Kroach the most? It’s a great reveal and one that drives the majority of this issue. The flashback sequence features many levels to how determined one is about defeating this evil and at what cost? From that points’ conclusion, someone makes a move that changes the dynamic between these characters forever. It’s a drastic move, but then again, these are drastic times. Excellent final moment to end this issue on.

Starkings sets up a great origin story for the threat of the Harvester. One the connection is made to readers of the major character to the deathless, the book’s mood changes accordingly. That character’s motivation to save Tertiarus has never been in question, but the methods shown in their plan provides a sense of desperation and guilt more than brave heroics. The tragic tale of the Deathless was balanced out very well by the reaction to this reveal. The Pantheon of Tertiarus keeps getting shown in different lights, which Starkings does a masterful job in presenting.

Hardings keeps the fantasy imagery rolling with this issue. The full-blown page shot of the Harvester gave readers a direct message of how serious this threat is. The moment when the Deathless’s connection is to one major character played out perfectly. From the shock on that character’s face to the travel back to a more prosperous time in Tertiarus, Harding delivers on the emotion of the moment and the ultimate despair of accepting failure. The final act pulls no punches as the desperation spreads even more to the ending visual to carry thru to next issue.

FINAL POINT: Ask For Mercy #4 takes a small detour into the past but the future pay-off hits big! *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Power Rangers have been thru so much since the epic saga of “Charge To 100.” With an investigation of a disturbance on the moon, the young heroes had no idea what they were going to see unfold! Lord Zedd, their infamous adversary is lying at the feet of a returning, yet new figure in the Power Rangers Universe. Rita Repulsa has emerged with a new identity of Mistress Vile and taking care of Zedd sent shockwaves thru the Rangers. However, her next actions drive a deeper wound into the team. Vile captures Matt, the green ranger and is on the run! With desperation and frustration setting in for finding Matt, the team gets a signal that the red omegazord is on the planet Casentine. Once they arrive, they don’t find Matt or the Omega Rangers, but find Alpha-1 waiting for them at the downed zord.

This issue kicks off with an update for the readers about Matt. Along with torture, Vile is also trying to break Matt mentally and starts going into how similar they both are. From here, readers settle in for the origin of how Rita has become Mistress Vile. Dated a few months back (along with a two-page recap of Rita’s notable moments), Rita has been banished into space from Lord Zedd for failing to conquer Earth. Drifting away, she is discovered by space pirates led by Divatox, who say there is quite the bounty for Rita’s return to her home of Gamma Vile and her father, Master Vile. Once the family reunion starts, it’s the beginning of the end of Rita and the era of Mistress Vile starts.

The reunion is overshadowed by Master Vile’s ultimate goal coming to possible fruition. What plan does Master Vile have in store here? Who is he trying to connect with? How does Alpha-1 tie into those plans? How does Rita’s return impact everything? Readers witness how love of family is trumped by love of power. The final act carries a great build-up and pay-off explaining most lingering questions. However, readers will need to brace for the impact of Vile’s master plan with the final panels here.

The story behind Rita’s evolution was an excellent read. Flores sets things up to display how ruthless Rita can be and how her new status quo hasn’t even begun to plateau. The relationship with her father proved to be a double-edged sword in the sense of how Rita being back meant a great deal, only to be pushed aside by his own master plans and self accolades. Once established, readers watched along as she went to work assessing and ultimately manipulating control of the situation. Reintroducing a character with such notable history can be difficult, but Flores pulls this off masterfully with giving Rita a layered origin into her new persona. With that said, Take nothing away from the impact of the final page, as those few panels will have fans reacting strongly as the endgame is revealed very quietly. Incredible issue.

The artists on this issue (Simona Di Gianfelice & Kath Lobo) present Rita’s rebirth with some excellent panels. The two page spread showing her “this is your life” timeline jumps out. It’s a great piece for new readers to get caught up quick on what the character is all about and a great refresher for older fans. The panels with Master Vile “reuniting” with his daughter also stand out as Rita’s reaction to hearing her father’s plan spun into scheming and planning which gave a bigger pay-off when the plan unfolded. Rita’s constant evil smile carries through this issue and gives readers the visual que that she’s been in control this entire time, whether others knew or not. While this issue focuses all on Vile’s origin, the final panels will connect with readers as they see what Vile’s current manipulation is about to cause. It’s not a huge moment persay but once readers see what’s unfolding, it will hit BIG.

Take about a huge reveal. Booher gives readers much information about the glasses and no one is ready for the origin behind them. It’s a big moment and one Kenny struggles to understand and accept. It’s also a great twist and plays into the throwback feel of this book exceptionally. Specs never fails to disappoint in this manner. Booher keeps taking these characters on such an emotional trip. Kenny’s frantic search for clues and what can he do to save his best friend pushes this story forward. All the drama build-up has a huge payoff and the final moment of this chapter will leave readers excited and nervous all the same.

Shehan pushes the desperation and fear factor of Kenny’s story right off the bat this issue. Seeing his best friend got to jail for a crime he didn’t really commit* (well kinda of) pushes Kenny into a defeated state grasping for any signs to fix things. The reveal about the glasses was a huge surprise and the art depicted the evil behind it. The imagery fit right into the dark story. seeing how Kenny reacted was another strong visual moment. The final page drives home to readers we are entering the final stage and it’s anyone’s guess how this book concludes when it does.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Tribulation, New Mexico has a monster problem, literally. An evil creature is on the loose. Erica has re-emerged from hiding to protect the lone survivor of its’ initial attack and stop the creature from killing more. Erica has become a reluctant ally to Riqui, a bartender who is the “guardian” of Gabi, a teenager who watched her family be slaughtered.

All the while, the Order of St. George looks to tie up the loose end known as Erica Slaughter by having Cutter take her out. In a short time, Cutter has been systematically striking Erica with personal blows and precise planning. At the end of last issue, she helps the creature turn into a “duplicate” of Erica, framing her for more killings. Now on the move, Erica is a wounded target trying to figure out what’s next.

This issue kicks off with Erica, Riqui and Gabi driving to the police station. Gabi has a conversation with Erica about her “companion” which reveals how Erica making a stand might get everyone killed. As they arrive at the station, Erica is arrested on sight for “murders across the country” due to the manipulations of a “federal agent” on the Sheriff. Erica tries warning of the set-up but the sheriff won’t listen and takes all three into the station.

With Gabi and Riqui kept inside a locked office at the station and Erica handcuffed to the interrogation table, the agent appears. Cutter has now arrived at the front door ready to confront Erica.

What unfolds next is a frightening scenario of events. Readers will not be ready for Cutter’s next moves. Has Cutter committed checkmate on Erica? is there any hope to survive what’s coming next? The final moments of this book will shake readers up and you won’t be able to wait for the next issue to see how everything plays out.

Absolutely fantastic issue. The issue is constructed perfectly in its pacing. Tynion takes his time setting up events for the dramatic closing moments. The build works as Erica knows what’s about to unfold and can do nothing about it. This sense of despair will hit with readers and only adds more impact when Cutter arrives. In only a few pages, the plan of attack Cutter demonstrates sinks in and will haunt readers for what’s next. It’s brutal, unforgiving and gives the sense that Erica won’t survive this time, which is what every great antagonist should be presenting.

The artwork by Dell’edera & Muerto brings Cutter’s twisted plans to life without holding anything back. From the moment Cutter arrives at the station, the feel of the book shifts with such tension. Seeing how psychotic Cutter is with her plans’ execution was an intense visual to play out. It’s only matched by the frustration of Erica who slips further into doubt of finding a way out of this. One of the final images solidifies that frustration carrying readers into the next issue.

FINAL POINT: One of the great strengths of SIKTC is when they play a slow build, the payoff never disappoints. This rings true again with this issue. Tynion, Dell’edera, Muerto & the team ramp up the drama with incredible storytelling and art to push Erica into a dire situation with very little signs of hope. Do not miss this issue at the LCS this week.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This story kicks off in the city of Kiros. Kiros is described as “the last city in the known world.” Readers discover that many years ago, there was peace made after a devastating war. Now in a state of tranquility, it would appear that things in Kiros should be great. However, it does not seem to be the case. Readers get ushered into a big example of how there’s still danger lurking within the city limits with many different characters living together in this fantastic new world.

A sea-like figure known as a “Maid” (note the fishtales) emerges from the Lagoon, an area within Kiros. The maid appears to die on shore in front of a group of fellow maids. Right behind them, a Elf-human named Dace also emerges lifeless and crashes near the deceased maid, with the group dispersing.

The story now shifts to Merchant Row where readers get introduced to Detective Phaedra Essex, known for wearing a Black Cloak to be identified as law enforcement.Essex handles a routine issue with one of the inhabitants of Kiros, a goat/human-esque figure before getting called away to what will be a shocking crime scene that she won’t be ready for.

That scene is located above the Salty Crow in an apartment in the Narrows. A fellow Black Cloak named Pax is investigating a dead body with royal ink on their arm. The body turns out to be Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the throne!

From here, Essex reveals a bombshell to Pax involving the deceased! The pair now starts to investigate Freyal’s death. First stop is to the Salty Crow, where more clues are revealed about Freyal. Once back at the station, the pair are called to the lagoon and now investigate the bodies found earlier in the issue.

How/Are they connected to Freyal? With more clues and a rising body count, readers won’t be ready for the next steps in the investigation. The tension keeps building and hits a certain peak when Essex gets clearence to meet with the royalty of Kiros with Freyal’s passing. Those scenes are impactful but get ready for the fallout. No one is going to be ready for that and the final image to close this chapter out.

Talk about a debut issue! With all the complexity of introducing readers to a fantasy world, at its’ core, Black Cloak is an engaging thriller. Thompson establishes that right from the start and never lets that sway what is unfolding here. There are many characters and figures making first impressions but none shine brighter that Detective Phaedra Essex. The character of Essex is a multi-layered figure as her connection to the murder victim drives the story into new directions. In a way, Essex becomes an enigma herself. There is no bigger (or better) example of this than when she meets with the Queen to inform her of Freyal’s death. As that business trip expands, questions become raised about Essex that plant the foundation for bigger answers later in the series. The partnership between Essex and Pax is another strong element in this book. It is very easy to pick up that the pair have been working together for a while and are committed to solving this high profile case with Pax making sure Essex can handle working it with all the emotional baggage involved. For being an over-sized issue, the story moves pretty steady without ever feeling like the leads are dwelling too long on any scene. The writing will lock you in from page one and doesn’t let go till the exclamation point put at the end of the issue!

With as fantastic as the story and writing is, McClaren and Carey match the drama and excitement of this story perfectly. With the fantasy element of Kiros, the characters all have distinctive looks. From the maids in the lagoon to proprietors of the Salty Crow to the Police Station characters and more, Kiros lives up to the “last city in the known world” with all the different residents. The city has many elements to it and for a first issue, it showcased enough to hook people in to find out more. Seeing Essex’s reactions to what unfolds in this issue is also noteworthy. McClaren never keeps the reader guessing on how Phaedra is reacting to a moment. The world of Kiros also is featured to readers as a place where more is going on that anyone realizes. There are many panels that will stand out but none might be greater than the final one page panel to end this issue on. Get ready for that!

Guillory presents a great question about how much technology can impact human life with this series. Mosely went from buying into to the optimism promised from working with his pupil Six to being very jaded and bitter about the current world he lives in. Readers witness his anger over how things are now and see how that will push him moving forward. The conversations he has between human and machine throughout this book are poignant for the times they usher in. How did someone who cared so much for a “better tomorrow” become so angered by a complacent today? Filling in the gap from how things arrived at this point will make for a great story.

Lotfi welcomes readers into Mosely’s world with some very impressive visuals. There are some great two page spreads that will stand out. The one is with Mosely leaving the school with the futuristic skyline in the backdrop. It’s simple in set-up but once readers see the next two-page visual directly after, it shows how far the world has advanced with people in that skyline and how Mosely doesn’t appear to want to have anything to do with it. The final moments throw an interesting change in the status quo. It’s an unforseen move but one that closes things out with much mystery heading into next issue.

Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo make up the heroes in the half shell known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. On the other side of this story is Jason (Red Ranger), Billy (Blue Ranger), Zach (Black Ranger), Trini (Yellow Ranger), Tommy (Green Ranger) and Kimberly (Pink Ranger) who compose the legends known as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

The last time these 2 groups came across each other, they were united in stopping Rita Repulsa and Shredder. The first series is an absolute must read. This story (which is NOT connected to the current MMPR series arc) is set six month after its’ conclusion.

The story opens up in New York City with Casey Jones, the notorious TMNT ally, chasing down Karai, the protege of Shreddar. With her master being gone since the ending of MMPR/TMNT 1, there is some concern from Casey about his whereabouts and rightfully so. One of the most dangerous beings of any universe has gone off radar? That can’t be anything good. However, an unseen assailant attacks Casey before he gets an answer.

One week later in Angel Grove (hometown for MMPR), the teams (along with TMNT ally April O’Neal) are trying to be “normal” out in the public but a fault image inducer might put that good idea in danger. All the while, April brings up concern for Rita being in the shadows an waiting for bad news to happen.

Back at the Power Rangers Command Center, Billy is working with Donatello on the image inducer while Jason and Leonardo are training. Readers witness the two share thoughts about their teammates before the tale shifts gears back to New York. Raphael and Tommy are alerted to Casey Jones’s disappearance and now go searching for him. What or who does the pair meet up with along the way? What other forces are at play that draw out both teams? The action kicks into high gear and readers are in for a BIG surprise before a final pairing shot that caps off the event’s initial outing.

One of the best in the industry does it again! Parrott is back at the helm for the sequel and doesn’t miss a beat picking up where things left off. Readers will look forward to great interactions between members of both teams. The pairing of Tommy and Raphael works so well for this beginning issue. This is the one that will stand out amongst the others, which all have solid points that they hit. Parrott gives every major player enough time to get their moments in while setting up for a bigger event later in the issue. It is a game-changer and one that sets a high tempo for the rest of the series to follow. Readers will be excited to see where things are heading towards now after a huge reveal late in the book. Very chilling line to complement the reveal with before ending this portion of the story…..and this is JUST the first issue! If this is any indication of what to expect, fans better get ready for something epic within this series.

Before we get into the art review, how incredibly AMAZING is this image from Dan Mora?!?!?!?!

Mora absolutely crushes this issue! Right from the initial encounter with Karai and Casey, Mora brings a high paced feel to the action scenes. This is leveled out with the character moments between the turtles and the rangers. One of the best example of this is when Billy is talking with Donatello after the image inducer breaks down. Seeing Don’s reflection of being a Power Ranger from the first crossover and longing to connect with the morphin energy again jumps out and showcases how these characters mesh well. The Leo/Jason training segment was also very solid in showing how similar they are and what they feel about both groups. As great as these images are, Mora’s set-up of the first team-up within this issue will blow fans away. There is a two-page spread that will kick off a big battle that readers can’t help but be excited to see what happens next. Excellent final parting shot to close out the first issue.

FINAL POINT: With an event involving two of the biggest fandoms in pop culture, the expectation levels are astronomical. That said, Parrott, Mora and company kick things off with a debut issue you can’t pass up. The fantastic story is matched panel for panel with excellent writing to make this an event that needs to be in your pull list each time out. Don’t miss it!

The story unraveling in this issue proves to be a solid companion to the other series while standing on its’ own. Maxine’s tale kicks off with an interesting challenge that (to my knowledge) hasn’t been brought up before. Switching Masks isn’t as simple as grabbing a new veil. Seeing how impactful this can be add more weight to what readers expect from each group.

The writing fully breaks down everything involved with the order and is a great reference point to characters in these books. The breakdowns do not take anything away from Maxine’s quest for knowledge. The finale lives up to the build. It will make for some interesting stories following the end of this chapter.

The artwork stands on its own as well. At this book’s core, it’s all about Maxine’s choice more that the background of the order. Take nothing away from that presentation. It stood out and presents much clarity behind this mysterious place. What readers will take away more is the emotional toll Maxine is hit with during her decisions.

The impact of Aaron Slaughter affected more than anyone (including) the Order realized. The conversations between Cecilia and Maxine convey those feelings with the panel breakdown of the car ride right after seeing Aaron’s body. The final image leaves no doubt about how things are changing for the Order. Readers should be expecting big repercussions from this issue moving forward.

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest chapter in Valiant Entertainment’s MATURE READERS vision of one of their franchise characters: Bloodshot. The challenges presented thus far have been a burst of creative energy that has given new life to Bloodshot. After reading this series, there’s no turning back. THIS is the definite take on the character.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

As with the majority of Valiant comics, there is a great “new readers” page to catch anyone up to speed of what is unfolding in a series. This current run has been focusing on Bloodshot cleaning up the government’s mess of loose “Spent Shells”. These “Shells” are walking weapons that the powers that be deemed too dangerous fr the public. Now running free throughout the US, Bloodshot is the only one capable of stopping them. The past three issues have consisted of “One and Done” missions which works within the boundaries set up with this new mission.

For this issue, readers see a disturbing scene of officers tied up with barbed wire. Bloodshot has arrived on the scene and is immediately shot through the chest! The shooter is a “Spent Shell” named Verlane. As he’s passing out from the wound, Bloodshot is transported into a flashback time with his “wife, daughter and dog”. What should be a happy night playing video games with the family turns into a devastating explosion with Hobbes standing in the center. The setting of the explosion will look very familiar to readers of issue #1 of this series. When Bloodshot awakes from the Hobbes moment, he’s in pursuit of Verlane who’s staked out and defending himself from what he perceives as a monster hunting him. Just as Bloodshot is about to approach Verlane, he realizes he’s walked into another trap.

Readers will be on the edge of their seats as they bare witness to Bloodshot fight two enemies at the same time…but in different times Regardless when, the action never stops as it heads into its final act. Once there, the ending may thrown some off but it is a satisfying one for where this mission was heading. No disappointment here. It’s done in a way that’s all Bloodshot.

Bloodshot can be a challenge to write. An unstoppable killing machine needs to be tested each time out and pushed to their limits. Camp has proven time in and time out that this can be successfully done. This issue is no exception. Shifting between both time periods can be difficult but how Camp sets these jumps to unfold works to great success. Verlane’s ending was a great swerve to what readers have witnessed thus far with this book. The ending may thrown some for a second read, but it works as a great change of pace to what we’ve seen thus far with this book.

Zawadzki takes the art reigns for this month and doesn’t switch anything away too far of from what has made this book such a hit. The big action scenes are sprinkled throughout, but where this issue really shines is the emotional toll being portrayed. Readers can feel the anguish of the Hobbes storyline fallout and how it all ties into Verlane’s portion. The final image leaves a great lasting visual until next time.

FINAL POINT: No one captures the voice of Bloodshot like Deniz Camp. Bloodshot Unleashed #4 brings forth excellent storytelling and art as Valiant’s anti-hero continues his fantastic run with no restrictions of how far the creative team wants to push the limits in his new status quo. Do not pass up picking up this book and series when at the local comic shop this week.

Over the course of the series, B (aka Unute) has been handling dangerous missions under the eye of Dr. Caudwell and his only ally Diana who are trying to solve his mystery. After taking a trip through his own existence, Diana has now become connected to B via an energy blast. B has now been led to a location where secrets of how to end his life may be held. After uncovering a bird that can take away his power, B faces his fate.

Reeves and Kindt set up the finale with a fast moving plot. Seeing the buildup for B’s possible demise was presented well. The emphasis driving the panels was very clear. The moment felt huge and it reflected in the artwork. Seeing Caudwell’s plan unfold paid off as well. His defiance in the face of the attacks unfolding will stand out to readers. Pacing sped up at this stage as the first half of the issue was driven by the attention to B’s struggles. The repercussions from his plan looks to have all the makings for a noteworthy conclusion.

Garney creates brilliant imagery to exemplify B’s ordeal. There were a few full page panels showing the power running thru B as the bird was drawing the energy away. Diana and B crashing back to the ground from this also stood out. These moments felt huge as it carried the weight of the major plot point. Caudwell’s repercussions will also jump out to readers. Those panels feel manic and connect readers to the unstable environment now created. The final image will have readers amped up for what’s about to unfold in the final chapter.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Coming off the heels of Ryan Parrott’s epic finale in the “Charge To 100”, the Power Rangers haven’t had too much quiet time at Angel Grove to rest. Investigating a disturbance on the moon, the rangers arrive to see Lord Zedd, their most dangerous enemy laying defeated at the feet of the returning Rita Repulsa now known is Mistress Vile! Along with Rita/Vile is a shadowy figure (who I guessed a while back was a “Dark Zordon” clone). The rangers do not fare well in this confrontation and lose Matt (The Green Ranger) to Vile in the process.

This issue picks up with a flashback/memory like scenario with Zordon talking with Lord Zedd. Zedd realizes that Zordon is trying to save his life and they converse about Mistress Vile’s return. Readers see fist hand how Vile and her team tear through Zedd’s forces to acquire the Zeo Crystal.

On Earth, the team is regrouping and coming to terms Matt is in danger and what they can do to get him back. Frustration is mounting as the emotional toll is starting to appear on a few rangers’ faces. Once again, Vile doesn’t give the rangers much time to form a plan as a creature shows up in their hometown. The rangers spring into action but what is the true meaning of this attack? How do certain rangers react? What is the fate of Matt? Readers have much to process before they get to the final act which is going to set up an interesting conversation heading into next issue.

This issue features how much Vile’s actions have started to fracture the team. Flores pushes the emotional weight on Zordon, Aisha, and primarily Kimberly is this issue. Seeing her conversation with Tommy pre and post monster attack is prime example of the foundation starting to crack. The scenes with Zordon and Zedd were excellent and told volumes without taking up much time. Their history is always a great piece of storytelling and now a broken Zedd relying on Zordon made for great panels. I’m still sticking to my claim Vile’s companion is a “Dark Zordon” clone, which would be a great addition into the rogues gallery. The final act ramps up the drama and readers will have much to look forward to with this story.

Di Gianfelice delivers on a solid balance of action and drama with the art. The full page panel of Vile’s attack on Zedd’s castle will jump out at readers. The following moments carry that same energy and demonstrates how lethal the new threat is. It’s counter balanced with the impassioned expressions of Aisha and Kimberly. The pressure of seeing someone they care about and being helpless pours out on the page when coming to terms on what Vile has done with Matt. It all makes for an excellent issue.

The Hyborian saga had many amazing surprises that you should make sure you grab the TIME IS THE SHARPEST EDGE TPB and see for yourselves, but the 2099 story has just begun…

The team (minus Conan - see TPB) is now making their way thru the new timeline with an uneasy addition to the mix: Punisher 2099 (Jake Gallows). The mission has now shifted to taking the fight to a true evil figure no matter what timeline you see him in: ULTRON. In this time frame, Ultron has an army of Deathloks at his disposal. The Avengers make their move to fight and encounter another figure that could be a game changer in their quest: Victor Von Doom of 2099!

This issue opens up with a flashback to 2091. Ultron begins a takeover of Latervia but Doom is always ready to defend his country. Doom triggers a song to play which activates Latveria’s defenses. Readers fast-forward to 2099 and witness what is known as”The Iron Front” : Doombots versus Deathloks. The Savage Avengers escape in the Punisher’s ship and fly away while hearing Doom’s idea to stop Ultron. An artifact (a time-array gauntlet) might hold the key to stopping the future. The team balances out but having some personal conversations, none that will hit readers more than Anti-Venom and Deathlok.

The good times don’t last long as they are shot out of the sky by a Deathlok soldier. The impending crash sees Doom teleport away while the others deal with the aftermath of a surrounding army hot in pursuit. In a surprise move, Doom comes back to help the Avengers escape and ultimately arrive at their destination to acquire the time-array gauntlet, but are met with Ultron and his opposing force who has been letting the team lead him right to the weapon.

At this point, the issue really kicks into high gear with the action. Readers will NOT be ready for what unfolds next as the battle rages onward. There are no punches pulled. There are no breaks to catch a breath as the battle The situation takes a dramatic turn as the Avengers throw everything they have at Ultron. How does the team fare? Trust me when I say: NO ONE is expecting what happens in the final act. No One. Readers - get ready for a mind blowing conclusion to this issue.

Pepose pulls out all the stops for this issue. Pacing set events up spectacularly to drive home the key moments. Adding DOOM to this highly combustible team made for some very memorable sequences. Doom’s “rescuing” of the team after the crash was perfectly capped off with vintage Doom Dialogue acting as everyone “should be grateful” for his help. Overall, The dynamic between members has been very enjoyable to see grow. The scene between Anti-Venom and Deathlok hit all the high marks and gave a bit of time to catch a minute from all the action. Heading into the final act, readers will be caught off-guard and will have some big surprise moments. The final scenes will have readers locked and loaded to see what happens next without question.

Magno brings the blockbuster action that has become a staple for this series. Even the smallest conflict has the “big fight feel” added to the dialogue. The opening full page spread explaining the “Iron Front” set the tone early for the rest of the issue. Even the quieter panels had huge emotion to them. None greater than the Anti-Venom/Deathlok sequence. The remaining battle scenes were bold, loud and direct, which fully complemented Pepose’s dialogue. The final page of this book established the looming jeopardy ahead and will have readers speculating how this will all play out.

Pepose, Magno and the team construct a tale for the ages mixed with incredible storytelling and impressive art. There’s never a shortage of highlights to please fans with these characters leading the way into impossible odds Make sure you don’t miss this issue (and the TPB) when you hit the comic shops this week!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In case you’re new to this series, Jessica Harrow is a reaper, helping to guide dead souls to the other side. When a routine assignment goes off the track, Jessica realizes there is more mystery to her than she can even fathom. The journey has shown some insane twists and turns with the current stat quo being she (along with her friends Eddie and Marcel) are now trapped on Earth thanks to Adira. There are so many amazing moments going on with this series that fortunately for readers, GRIM Vol. 1 SC Discover Now Edition is hitting the stores this week as well!

However, this issue kicks off with a trip to No Man’s Land 1917. The scene is intense as war is fully in gear and soldiers mounting attacks. There is a notable red marking on their foreheads. As a solider lines up to shoot, he is killed by opposing fire. His body falls at the feet of a very notable character of the series: DEATH!

From here, the story shifts back to a gentleman walking into a club and catching the act performing on stage. This gentleman is Harold, the messenger, who approaches the singing group after the performance. Harold informs them of changes, but the trio already is aware of the shifting events of the afterlife.

At this stage, the story now shifts to Jessica (as well as Eddie and Marcel) are attending a music festival. This has been the first moment to adjust from the events of last issue and their apparent exile. Jessica takes a break from the music to clear her head with a walk. On this break, she runs into someone with the same mysterious red marking on their forehead like the soldiers at No Man’s Land. What happens next will throw everyone off! What does this stranger do? What is the secret behind the marking? What is going on with the epilogue. Welcome to the new phase of Grim! Readers will have much to be buzzing about with this issue.

Phillips doesn’t skip a beat with the returning arc! The mystery of the red markings should be something big when it’s all said and done. The introduction was pulled off exceptionally well. There are so many questions to guess at (granted,it’s the first issue back), but that’s what makes Grim stand out from other books. It’s constantly keeping readers on edge and not letting things tire. Seeing Harold pass along about the changes happening is another plot point to watch for. Pacing was great as the major players had enough panel time to hook new readers into the story. Seeing how Jessica is processing last issue’s event capped off a strong return.

The art of Flaviano (with Renzi’s coloring) takes this whole story onto other levels. One area that is always noticeable is the way music is incorporated into each issue. The lyrics of the song playing always stand out on the pages. Napolitano’s lettering makes them all pop on each scene. From the club scenes to Jessica zoning out to some Bruce Springsteen, these moments don’t go unnoticed by any reader. The statue scenes with Jessica at the festival really shine. This book has a style all it’s own and visually, there’s nothing like it on the shelves. You need to see it all for yourself.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue starts off in New Orleans in the 1950’s with a man waking up from a dream. His name is Shawn Thacker. He wakes up to what appears to be a normal life: wife, son and getting ready go to wok. His son Tommy wants to spend some quality time with Dad and go fishing. Thacker says yes, but the mood shifts when Tommy mentions going to the basement for their fishing poles. Thacker sternly tells his son to stay out of the basement, cause “that’s where the monster is”. Readers get a front row seat as Thacker goes down the stairs and see the “monster” up close and personal. A masked man named Ferris is ties up in the basement! The conversation is cold and tense as Thacker is being provoked by his prisoner. After getting his fishing poles, he leaves his prisoner and heads into town,.

From there, Shawn Thacker drives into a bigoted crown protesting (reflecting the disgusting hateful climate of that era) on the way to work. After a brief detour into a bar, Thacker returns home to find his wife and son severely wounded for the man in the basement….who has escaped! At the hospital, Thacker has a talk with his wife with dire news involving their son coming to the forefront. Thacker tells his wife that their son is not going to make it through his wounds from the attack. The couple says their final goodbyes and Shawn Thacker is suddenly thrusted into the future out of nowhere. At this stage, Readers start getting more clues onto what Thacker’s mission has been and why he is on a mission to save the world or let it be ended?

What is the mystery about to unfold here? How is Thacker attached to his prisoner? What is the connection with the prisoner’s actions? Are the time travelling days over? Where does the story go now? Readers will have much to digest with reading the incredible story unfolding here.

Tomlin sets forth an intense read that will keep readers guessing from start to finish. The character of Shawn Thacker is a complex one to say the least. After his time in New Orleans, the future sequence sheds some insight on what is going on here. It poses the question to the readers of who’s really telling the truth. Tomlin writes Ferris a line in the future timeframe that actually questions if Thacker is the hero here. Seeing their connection “work” is going to make for an explosive dynamic the more this story plays out.

How else can you describe Bermejo’s art in this book other than masterpiece. Bermejo switches styles pending on what timeline he’s illustrating. From the photographic 1950’s to the more vibrant future along with the various timelines shown, the book will captive readers with how much it jumps off the page from the opening cover. The interactions between Thacker and Ferris showcases how much they’re both committed to their causes and what lengths they’re willing to go to each succeed.

CENSUS #4 by Marc Bernardin, Adam Freeman, Sebastián Piriz, Bernardo Brice and Sarah Litt take readers along for another assignment with Liam Malone & his unusual work for the census bureau. The book has been a great mix of humor and drama thus far. Let's see what's going on here and if the win streak continues, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In case you’re just joining in, Liam Malone is a likeable loser trying to find work and make it through this crazy place called life. When he applies for a job with the census bureau, Liam thinks it’s a sign of things changing in his favor. Unfortunately, not everything is what he thought. Liam works for the census bureau…but his job requires him to record the supernatural beings of New York City. From the start, he’s dealt with demons, leprechauns, and shape shifters just to name a few. After his last assignment, Liam gets ready to call it a day until a familiar face returns to see him: Lilith, the demon he “got close with” in issue #1.

The issue opens up with Liam and Lilith catching up since their initial encounter. The point of Lilith trying to get Liam on a date was a fun read as the bus driver had to jump in and guide Liam. Just when he thinks he’s got a win, his boss Mr. Pictor arrives to scold him on his recent escapades. Liam’s taken some different actions to get the job done and that is catching the eye of his boss. Liam walks away not too concerned as proceeds onto his next assignment: a cthulhu who proves to be quite charming.

With that meeting taken care of, Liam makes his way to a pizzeria in Hell’s Kitchen. Liam thinks he sees a literal ghost heading to the basement. As he walks down the stairwell, Liam finds ghosts of enslaved peoples on a burial site during the time of slavery. Liam leaves without any signatures and discusses what happened on his date with Lilith. During that conversation, Liam gets an idea to give the ghosts some closure thinking that will set them free from where they are living. What is Liam’s plan how to do this? Who does he get involved to help out? What will be the outcome if he pulls this off? Readers can expect more of the winning formula that this series has been delivering in answering those questions.

Bernardin and Freeman continue to present Liam Malone as a character of humor and heart. Thru all his “fish out of water” dealing with his job, Liam always comes across as someone who tries to be better that what life has thrown at him. The moments with Lilith and the bus driver came across very funny and work to win readers over each time. Seeing how Liam deals with the wide variety of characters he’s come across has shown a great deal of growth as he deals with his job. Seeing some of the supporting cast get more panel time as a nice change of pace. The story was entertaining in seeing what lengths Liam is willing to go to make things right no matter the consequence. Witnessing how his boss handles the latest event will be one to keep an eye on moving forward.

Piriz’s rendition of a cthulhu was amazing. It made for one of the more memorable scenes in the issue. Seeing the interaction with Liam and Lilith also made its’ presence known. Considering all the supernatural elements involved with this story, seeing the human aspect get valuable page time worked to connect readers with Liam and keep him grounded while moving thru assignments. Piriz’s attention to details (such as the cthulhu tentacles) was exceptional. The supporting cast got more attention this time around and Piriz made the most of their efforts in reflection to the story, where they haven’t had a ton of panel time previously. Great issue.

FINAL POINT: Census #4 progresses the legend of Liam Malone forward with another entertaining read. c Bernardin, Freeman, Piriz & the team don’t stray far away from the successful blueprint they’ve followed since issue one. Exciting writing (and humor) mashed up with fantastic art has made Census required reading each time out. Don’t pass on this issue for new comic book day.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue kicks off with a stranger appearing on the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. They are communicating with someone before readers attention shifts to a live stream from “Evaplayss”, where Radiant Pink is guesting on. Unknown to the viewers watching the stream is Eva IS Radiant Pink, the radiant with teleportation powers. Helping pass this illusion on is Eva’s best friend Maddie who is engineering the stream behind the scenes. During the stream, Radiant Pink announces that she will be making an appearance to raise money for children’s cancer research at the Kathryn Mitchell Children’s Hospital. After ducking out of the stream as Radiant Pink, Eva goes back to game streaming for many hours.

This causes concern from Maddie who thinks Eva is burning herself out with the superhero lifestyle she’s living in secret. Eva brushes it off to go on “Pink Patrol.” Readers get an insight to what Pink’s routine is being a hero and what toll it takes on her. It’s matched by a conversation with Maddie and her grandmother about Eva’s state. There is no break in the story as readers are taken to the guest appearance at the hospital, which leads to great success for Radiant Pink. However, the event is crashed by an interested party looking to acquire the Radiant power she possesses. What happens next will challenge the young hero as events unfold faster than she realizes. What happens from the fallout from here? Will the pace Eva’ been pushing finally catch up with her? And what about the final sequence of events to close out on? Solid debut issue & very welcoming to new readers of the character. The writing team of Camarena and Flores introduces Eva’s world and how perception isn’t exactly reality. Eva tries portraying everything is fine but it’s a great cover to the loneliness she is experiencing being a popular hero. The conversation between Maddie and her grandmother about Eva was a standout moment. Seeing how others are noting Eva’s break-neck speed of life, it gives some clarity on the drama about to unfold. The charity event provided a great glimpse of the hero in action. The writers also left a strong cliffhanger image for fans to process heading to the next issue.

Kubert brings a lot of energetic panels to life with this book. From the fun moments dealing with the initial stream to the candid talk between Maddie and Eva, there is some fun and light-hearten scenes to counter the action from the charity event. Kubert showcases Eva’s emotional side in some great panels as well. Two that jump right out is Eva getting told how much the event raised and to the two page end of her heroic day. Pacing never felt too fast as the story progressed easily into the big action moments in the issue. The final page sets up things nicely for next issue with small hints of what’s to unfold now.

FINAL POINT: The latest series spiraling out of the Massive-verse debuts with an issue readers don’t want to miss. The creative team makes Eva’s world very accessible to the latest adventure which shows a lot of intrigue moving forward. Camarena, Flores, Kubert and the team set things up with excellent writing and art to bring the spotlight to the massive-verse’s next big hit. Don’t miss it at the local comic shop this week.

DOOM PATROL Season Four part 1 review (HBO MAX)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay points, the comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast. For this entry, we are checking out the return of one of the best television/streaming shows, let alone best comic book shows to hit the airwaves. Making its’ season four debut on HBO Max on December 8th, DOOM PATROL is back with an all new season! From their comic debut in DC Comics in 1963 to being one of the initial starter shows for the DC Universe service in February 2019 (along with “Titans” which just returned to HBO Max a few wees back), the quirky superhero team has won over fans with their unique adventures.

Season Four kicks off a very busy season for the heroes as they are slated to have a brand new series, “The Unstoppable Doom Patrol” by Dennis Culver and Chris Burnham, featured as a part of DC Comics’ new “Dawn Of DC” initiative slated in March 2023. I can’t stress enough: if you like what you’ve seen thus far on the show, make sure to sign up for DC Comics Infinite and check out some of their great comic stories. You will see the influence of the Grant Morrison run throughout the tv series.

Speaking of the series, DOOM PATROL will debut its’ first two episodes on December 8th with single episodes running thru January 5th before taking break and resuming later in 2023. The ODPH podcast was granted early screening privileges to the series premiere so here is out SPOILER FREE review!

Doom Patrol Season Four - Airing on HBO Max starting December 8th

In case you are not familiar with the Doom Patrol, they are a group of super powered individuals who are flawed but still push forward somehow saving the world in the process. The team is comprised of:

Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby) who can stretch her skin but struggles to maintain it,

Negative Man (Matt Bomer), who radiates a dark energy being inside of him

Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), who’s multiple personalities each have their own powers

Robotman (Brendan Fraser), who’s human brain was installed into a robotic body

All of which were at one point being helped by Dr. Niles Caulder (Timothy Dalton) until a massive reveal in season 1 fractures everything. Cyborg (Joivan Wade), the longtime member of the Teen Titans and most recently the Justice League, was added to this line-up for the series since the beginning. Cyborg is half man, half robot following an accident at his father’s lab. Joining the team this season is Madame Rouge (Michelle Gomez), a “frenemy” last season who can change her shape.

Throughout the previous seasons, the team has dealt with their haunting pasts, personal discoveries and encountered a wide variety of characters such as Danny the Street, Mr. Nobody, Kipling, Gargaux The Decimator and the Sisterhood of Dada to name a few. To say there is no show like this on TV/Streaming is an understatement. The adventures have lived up to their comic book legacy leaning heavily into their time on the “DC Vertigo” Mature Readers and “Young Animal” imprint style of story. It stands out on its own due to its incredible ensemble cast.

How Diane Guerrero hasn’t won an Emmy for this role is a complete travesty in my humble opinion. The same can be said for Frasier, Bowlby and Bomer who each have had standout arcs within the first three seasons. This show transcends the typical super hero formula as its strongest themes are how these individuals deal with their own personal issues and push forward to do the right thing, even if they have no shot of winning. Heading to season four, the bar has been set very high for this show. Does it hit the mark?

The answer is a resounding YES! Season Four kicks off with the group “working” as a team under the leadership guise of Elasti-Woman. The first mission viewers see goes off as one would expect with this team and is a perfect way to kick the season. From here, the team’s plan of a simple trip post mission goes drastically wrong. With a detour into the future, the Doom Patrol gets exposed to what might be the end of the world and at what cost it might take to stop it.

From the initial start, viewers can bank on another strong season from Diane Guerrero, who handles such a complex character with seemingly ease switching personas as per the story direction. Jane’s story continues to be one of the noteworthy plots of this show. Guerrero persists making Jane a must watch factor of this show. However, the one character to keep an eye on this season will be Jiovan Wade’s Cyborg. From the offset, he looks to have a big story line on the horizon. This will be a great upgrade for Cyborg, as he’s been the “outsider” of the group for quite some time. Personally, I think the banter back and forth between Bowlby and Gomez, who is such a great addition to the show, will make for quite a few memorable scenes.

This season doesn’t stray away from the winning formula that has made the show such a hit from the beginning. The writers continue to embrace the challenge of each individual’s struggles while braving the offbeat surroundings they find themselves in. Viewers can easily connect and root for this group of misfit toys because each actor isn’t holding back from adding to the emotional depth of their characters. For as much as this show doesn’t fit into a certain mold, it makes its own that more shows should follow.

Doom Patrol Season Four - Airing on HBO Max starting December 8th

FINAL POINT: Let’s get weird for all the right reasons! Season Four of Doom Patrol comes out the gates swinging with a perfect blend of delight and dysfunction. The story looks as it will challenge the team more than they ever have been before. Viewers can tag along and witness strong performances from Guerrero, Fraser, Bomer and the team as they navigate to find a way to help save the world and each other in the process.

Hit me up on the ODPH social media accounts and let me know what your thoughts are on Doom Patrol.

Thanks again to HBO Max for the early screener access!

Thanks for reading!

The saga of Bibi’s heroic evolution continues to be absolutely incredible. Flores presents Bibi as a character who doesn’t do everything right but does everything needed to win. One of the strongest moments in this issue is right after Bibi makes the save of her father and starts reflecting after. Giving readers an inside peak into what Bibi is thinking made for some powerful imagery. The pace doesn’t slow down after that as Bibi heads straight into Morrow’s way. Readers can’t help but root for her to win and that’s all based on how the writing has established the emerging hero.

Carlomagno and Iacono give the world of Bibi’s San Francisco a bold energy in this issue. Bibi’s emergence from the restaurant pops right off the page and gives that panel an iconic feel. Without spoiling, the place where Bibi goes after is presented exceptionally. The action is high impact when it happens while the emotional moments stand apart on their own. The final shot form this book is one that adds more excitement to the moment which already had a huge aura to it. Excellent work from all involved.

It’s a great read that you should definitely check out and as previously stated, it’s out on print via Dark Horse Comics for those looking for a physical copy. That being said, Season 2 hasn’t shown any signs of a sophomore slump.

Season 2 starts out with Lara trying to find a balance out with her personal and heroic identities. Readers see Lara trying to deal with her issues head on by attending AA meetings. The struggle of balancing hero vs human life takes many forms as her reporter instincts draw her into investigating Creighton’s shady police commissioner Paul leGrande while the hero side of things takes a shot as a mysterious letter emerges that shakes Lara to her core. Factor in a new player in town with a deadly agenda and Lara’s life has never been tested like this. That player is names Harrow. Making an impact right out the gate, Harrow’s actions have now set Creighton on the edge of a massive crime war that Lara might not be able to stop. With a growing body count, Lara and Harrow met last issue with Lara being left for dead, only surviving because Harrow didn’t see her as any threat to her. This left Lara in a very bad state testing her will with everything she’s been working to improve.

This issue opens up with a sequence to where Lara meeting Rebekah, a Creighton Homicide office whom Lara has some history with. Once back to present time, Lara is confronted by Rebekah and Molly, her current love. They try to reason with Lara but Lara claims she isn’t drinking and is ok from the encounter with Harrow. So much so that Lara is continuing to infiltrate the club where she thinks holds the key to stopping the war once and for all. Readers won’t be ready for what unfolds next. Even after Lara starts seeing the pieces fit, does she even see the picture? With all of her investigation skills, is Lara ready for what lies ahead. The final moments of this book will answer that and leave some jaws dropped to what is set to happen next. The tension and stakes have never felt heavier on our hero.

Segura and Gallagher really amps up the drama within these pages. Lara's struggles with balancing both lives drives this story into some interesting directions. Seeing how she deals with the intervention by Rebekah and Molly was a very strong moment. The writing team present Lara as an imperfect person who continuously is trying to improve herself. Yet, with all her falls, she still gets back up trying to do the right thing. The slow burn approach to Harrow’s reveal was a great twist as well. Seeing Lara’s investigative skills come into play made for very noteworthy moments, none bigger than the conversation she has right after getting the lead on Harrow. Pacing gave these type of moments time to grow and connect with readers. The build to the last act was exceptional. It all lead to a great conclusion for this issue, with a great cliffhanger to build off of heading to the final issue of the season.

Not to be outdone, Kambadais hits on all the key story elements . Seeing first hand how Lara bounces back from the initial encounter with Harrow added a small piece of anticipation of where the story was heading. the big reveal also put into perspective Lara’s reaction to the reveal. At first glance, she is celebrating but once readers dig deeper into her reactions, Kambadais’s art sells the moments surprise element incredibly. Another noteworthy moment was the initial timepiece of when Lara meets Rebekah at the bar. With the additon of Ellie Wright’s coloring, it came across as a more detailed moment than one that misses the mark. Fortunately, readers don’t have that problem with this issue. Each fragment of the story escalates an intense visual feel to connect with the words being stated in those areas of the book.

Final point: the latest chapter of Lara Dominguez takes readers on a steady building powder keg of emotional moments. Segura, Gallagher, Kambadais and the rest of the creative team keep applying the pressure to Creighton’s defender and never lets up on seeing if she can remain strong enough to handle the challenge ahead. Season two of the Black Ghost rolls on into a must-witness finale. It’s excellent work that shouldn’t be missed at the Comixology store this week.

In case you’re just hearing about this series, Hazel Crenshaw is running the family farm in 1922 New York. During this period, it is the era of prohibition when selling alcohol was illegal. However, Hazel dabbles into the outlawed profession as a way to make end’s meat. Being in this line of work draws some much unwanted attention and uneasy alliances. Being in business with organized crime isn’t something that goes easy for Hazel. As she navigates thru this world, her business partner Frankie mentions more danger is coming. This danger turns out to be a Vampire gang led by Jotham, who attack the farm for the alcohol and kidnap Hazel’s sister Geraldine.

From here, readers have been taken on a trip of Hazel trying to get her sister back. They also seen Jotham go into business for himself after a “blood Oath” was made between the vampires and crime families to preserve the alcohol business. Jotham thinks the deal isn’t very beneficial. This doesn’t sit well with the Vampire Council, who Uzziah is representing when he is brought to Jotham by Carlo, one of the mobsters for a meeting. When the meeting goes south, Carlo is detained and Uzziah is killed. The odds are stacking up badly against Hazel and Geraldine’s boyfriend, Walt. walt carries much self doubt so his help isn’t really felt to be enough. Luckily, Hazel has an ally to fight back in Sister Theresa, who’s been training to stop the vampires since she was born. It might not be enough as Jotham now knows they’re on the move and sends his minions to eliminate them once and for all.

This issue opens up with the council is sent a clear message from Jothan that he’s not working for anyone any more.the council addressing Jotham’s response to the council condemning his actions: the severed head of Uzziah! There’s a lot to breakdown here. Hart and Segura shine some light on Jotham and how far he’s grown in his belief of his plan. Making the calculated moves has shown how vicious he is in winning this game. The example made of Carlo will catch readers off guard but it helps cement how dangerous Jotham has grown in such a short amount of time. It’s well placed in the story by the writers. All the actions have led to this point but Carlo’s death was the exclamation point needed. Hazel’s group gets their moments in this issue especially with Lehi, but this issue belongs to Jotham. That’s not a bad thing as Hazel’s tale has been established by now. Seeing the fruition of Jotham’s plans is what readers will take away here an be amped up for the finale.

Eisma doesn’t hold back on Jotham’s ruthlessness. Seeing in how he disposes of Carlo make quite the statement to readers. Another moment that jumps out from the art is the character moments with Walt this issue. Seeing how reluctant he is on himself to being given some confidence made for excellent character work. Proof of thisis shown later in the issue, but Eisma does capture that emotion of someone forced out of their comfort zone due to the situation they’re in. The build to the final page stands out to cap off this chapter in the story. You can’t help but be excited for what’s coming.

Final Point: The major places are set for what will be an epic conclusion to the story of vampires in prohibition. Hart, Segura, Eisma and the creative team set the table for a conclusion that has “big fight “ feel written all over it. The series has had fantastic writing and art to complement the imaginative take it’s been driving. With one issue left, make sure to get caught up on this series on Comixology.
