Unfortunately, there is no time to pause. Brainiac has arrived with his own plans. Who will be left standing when the dust settles here is anyone’s guess.

We have waited long enough for this conclusion. After waiting since 2023 for its’ return, let’s see how this all ends for Mr. Luthor and company.

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor #3 by Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (Comcraft) - DC COMICS

Throughout this series, the complex connection between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor has been examined. When a new threat enters the field, Waid switches the focus to their need of the other. The set-up is brilliant as the conflict makes Lex a pawn. This doesn’t sit well with someone who carries himself higher than others. What transpires next is a true definition of “What If”.

Knowing he’s dying, Luthor pushes forward with a heroic sensibility. Seeing how Superman reacts is justified. The symbol of hope refuses to lose it. He forces Lex’s hand with a fun twist. Waid lets the pair showcase their skills as time slips further away. This leads into their ultimate confrontation. The writing allows for Luthor to demonstrate his way of saving humanity. It hits with a bittersweet ending. The fallout gives a somber gravity to their complicated history. It also provides a lasting legacy fitting for two friends who lost their way.

Hitch and the art team go big for the finale. The two page introduction of Brainiac instantly sets the grave mood. Luthor’s reactions bounce off Brainaic’s unemotional responses. Even when Superman thinks he has back-up, a solid half panel shows how much the last Kryptonian is not in control. This pushes everything towards a doomed final play with the world at stake. Another two page splash shows Superman and Lex fighting their way into an escape. This gives way to a “parting” moment between old friends.

Once Luthor has a plan to stop Brainiac, the art shows how both know this is the end. Each facial response lets this inevitability sink further in. A Half page panel shows readers how both are rocked by Luthor’s attempts. This leads into an unlikely assault onto Brainiac’s ship. All of the action here feels straight out of a Hollywood film. The emotions start giving way as Luthor makes a final play. The fallout teases one possibility while setting up a shocking move. A parting two page image shows readers the rippling effect of what has happened. It leads to a well-placed final panel. In dealing with tragedy, the memories of the past provide comfort to compliment their legacy.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.7

As time runs out, Lex Luthor denies fate with a spectacular finale. Waid’s writing presents the final stand with a strong level of emotion. Hitch and the art team make the last stand of Superman & Luthor into a major event. This series crashes the list of “greatest Superman stories” with much for fans to enjoy.

G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO – ROADBLOCK #1 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

A Cobra convoy heads into a frozen & abandoned forest. Inside one vehicle is a captured G.I. Joe. Their mission appears to have no obstacles in its way. Little do they know there is one man waiting to re-route them. His name is ROADBLOCK. Armed with a .50 cal machine gun, some would say the odds are not in his favor. They would be silently wrong.

Krahnke brings out the best of the physical presence of the fan-favorite Joe. Knowing his knack for rhyming during combat, this is a new side of Roadblock. The feel is an all business approach. Seeing the convoy shocked when a tree falls in their way speaks loudly. The reaction of Cover Girl compliments it with a quick smirk. It doesn’t take long for the bullets to start flying. A near full page image of Roadblock crashing the party sets off events & never looks back.

The action is unapologetic in its silence. There is a sequence of panels showing a Cobra soldier being choked out. How the art focuses on his fading eyes indicates the brutal method of attack. After the rescue attempt is completed, the story is far from over. Krahnke sends in another classic COBRA soldier to intercept.

This allows for a moment Roadblock fans have been waiting for. Another near full page brings out the big guns. It takes readers into an action packed close. There are great combat scenes with much fanfare behind them. This moves the story along to its finish. The art depicts a more light-hearted ending than some may think. In this case, its’ a perfect way to enjoy the silence.

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

The latest installment of “Silent Missions” brings out the big gun of G.I. Joe lore. Krahnke and Segala deliver on a vintage action adventure which is sure to please. No dialogue needed. This series speaks for itself.

G.I. JOE #6 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

It has all come down to this. COBRA has made their presence felt. Using dangerous technology, the terrorist organization struck without warning. The elite fighting force known as G.I. JOE was dealt a crushing blow. Rock N’ Roll was killed in the line of duty. This broke the heart, but not the spirit of the team.

Duke has rallied the troops into a full-on assault. Their initial play wound up delivering them into the belly of the serpent beast. By sheer luck, Duke and company turned the tables on the COBRA victory. Before Cobra Commander can attempt another move, Duke is right in his face poised to get some revenge!

G.I. JOE #6 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) gives fans the showdown they have all been waiting for!

To say this issue had a “big fight feel” is a vast understatement. Williamson takes readers into an intense meeting of good vs. evil. The parallels between DUKE & COBRA COMMANDER are eerily similar. As the dialogue from Commander dances around the common themes, it is countered by Duke’s rage. This is where the common ground gives way. Commander makes his play. The fate of Washington D.C. is in immediate danger. Where things go from here is into a whole extra gear.

The action blazes onto the page. Williamson structures these pages with well timed breaks. This allows the main event to continue to build. It gives enough moments where the Joe team/Destro event doesn’t feel forced. This leads into the explosive conflict end. Readers can’t deny the adrenaline push as each move is amplified. The conclusion is set up perfectly. Considering it is a first round, it nails the landing. Within the closing pages, more seeds are planted involving the new stat quo. Nothing will be a greater shock than the final page. If there was ever a mic drop moment, Williamson hits it at the key point. There’s no way readers can’t be amped up after this chapter.

Reilly and Bellaire understand the stakes with the art. The build has pushed both faction leaders into their collision course. A fantastic two page spread brings Duke & Commander’s paths into the spotlight. This pushes the art into the combustible moment readers have wanted. Duke’s grittiness is equally matched by the Commander’s confidence. Their back and forth jabs are spilt with great panels. It fuels the rest of the chapter into a fast paced throwdown.

The Joes/Destro segway is brief but hits the needed marks. Reilly hones in on Destro’s disbelief challenged by The Baroness’ bravery. Their reactions maximize their page time. Short but effective. It is well timed considering the other match unfolding. There’s no shortage of blunt, brutal action with Duke and Commander. It comes to a strong, but subtle conclusion. This leads into some reflective closing images. A few panels will pop more than others due to the surprises. None greater than the final page. The full page image changes the game for the Joes as their next phase seems to have evolved.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5/10

Two roads converge with bullets and bravery in this phenomenal chapter. Williamson orchestrates organized chaos with the wild fighting stages. Reilly, Bellaire and Wooton expose the beginnings of a true “fight forever” with stunning imagery. This book delivers on many levels and never disappoints!

YOUNGBLOOD DELUXE #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

There’s only one chance to make a first impression. In 1992, one book led off a revolution in comics. Seven creators left Marvel to form a game-changing imprint. Their creativity would create the foundation that continues to elevate and excite fans 33 years later. The company is Image Comics. The Book: YOUNGBLOOD.

Many eyes were on this project not just cause of the company start. It also had to do with its’ legendary writer/artist. Knowing who and what he created, there was no doubt this project was generating the early buzz. The creative force? His name is ROB LIEFELD!

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen the team. In its absence, the fans have been clamoring for more. Their requests were finally answered. It was announced in late 2024 that the series was returning to Image in 2025! Kicking off their return is a remastered version of the book that launched everything!

YOUNGBLOOD DELUXE #1 by Joe Casey, Rob Liefeld, Matt Yackey and Rus Wooton brings back Image’s beginnings with an all new vision.

With this introductory chapter, fans can grasp a sense of what this team is all about. At it’s core, Youngblood is about challenging perception vs. reality. Casey’s work tightening up the script helps. The writing spends a fair amount of time introducing key players to the forefront. Shaft gets a great welcome to fans. He also provides a sense of the celebrity balance for this series. Badrock and Chapel get their fair amount of page time. This allows fans to see the diverse personalities handle the high cost of fame.

This theme boils over into the spilt time between “Home” (USA centric) and “Away” (International) squads. Home squad has more of a traditional superhero build. The Away conflict is a reflection of the time period of the 1990s. Readers watch as they handle political ramifications gone wrong.

The writing spares no expense exposing the flaws of these personalities. It all leads into a shocking ending when a member goes rogue. This causes plans to get changed and exemplifies the difficult landscape this team moves through. It’s not all black and white. The greys loom heavy overhead when the spotlight burns bright.

Liefeld knows how to maximize character moments better than most. Shaft makes a dynamic debut stopping a criminal. The panels sell the importance of the hero. It also delves into the uncomfortably feeling of fame. Each notable member of the Home team gets a solid portion of page team. This continues on when they kick into action. They are awarded a two page splash as they head into conflict.

The away team is not to be outdone. They open with a two page image. Readers watch as the tempo picks up when on the attack. One member stands out more than most in this sequence. Psi-Fire’s unstable personality shines in the chaos. His fury leads into the close of the book. The drastic measures taken break the Q rating mark. His bloody attack gets a unique full page. It leads into a colder look at the heroes mission. Some are built for the bright light. Others are built for business. The art covers both to paint this distinct view of heroes.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

In its structure, Youngblood blurs the lines of traditional superhero teams. Seeing how heroes are thrown into the public spotlight proves a true challenge. Both teams have obstacles to overcome and the writing doesn’t duck it. Liefeld’s art brings out the intensity of the pressure situations. Years after the debut, there’s still something special about this series that readers shouldn’t look past.

Kelly keeps readers at bay with what is happening to Spidey in the beginning. Readers watch as his rogues gallery shows up in full force. This leads to nothing but mayhem on the streets of NYC. Once events progress, the ruse is up. Spidey isn’t fighting his enemies. He’s literally attacking parked cars and vehicles. The hallucinations don’t stop here.

At his new job, Peter Parker’s mind is fading in and out. This isn’t sitting well with his new boss. Brian Nehring is an old childhood friend who can’t save him now. The writing is tipping off more to his generous nature than is true. Even stranger is his “partnership” with Norman Osborn. Deducting he’s been poisoned, Spidey swings back to his lone lead. Once here, the story shifts gears. Pacing moves things along to a screeching halt. Judging by the last page, an old friend has crashed the scene. This isn’t going to sit well with an already weakened wall-crawler. The story is pure Spidey 101 which is a welcomed return. Readers should have much to enjoy with this.

The success of this book is Larraz’s amazing art. There is not time wasted in starting the drama. A full page image of Spidey crashing through a wall kickstarts this adventure. The scenes fill with classic rogues. It spills into the true reality. The two page spread shows what Spidey’s been fighting and it’s not a great look. This gives way to another dream moment. A full page image depicts Green Goblin flying in for a fight.

The hallucinations give way to a foreshadowing of the true villains. Each panel slowly tips off their true motives. It leaves to an explosive end to the side plot. Once things swing back to Spidey, The visit to Ravencroft is gifted a half page panel. It’s mixed in with solid flashbacks using grey coloring. Events come crashing down with the final page. A full panel reveals trouble has arrived and Spidey isn’t ready for what’s next. Larraz has got Spidey storytelling very mastered at this stage.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

The mystery behind the Rhino’s fall pushes Spidey to his mind’s end. Kelly weaves in a solid build with some curves thrown in plot. Larraz’s art is next level for where the dreams truly are nightmares. This is a great jumping on point for readers looking for that classic Spider-Man feel.

Like David Bowie once said: “Time may change me, But I can't trace time”. Time is having a bit of a crisis. Displaced events fill the streets on normal days. Nothing is ever as it seems. How does someone survive in this kind of world?

ASSORTED CRISIS EVENTS #2 by Deniz Camp, Eric Zawadzki, Jordie Bellaire and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou delves into this anomaly of times for another look at (un)ordinary life.

Early into this series, Camp continues to take readers on an introspective journey. Much like with Ashley in issue one, Jesús is a complex character. His introduction plays into the time displacement with some T-Rex hijinx. In a blink, the boy is a man at his father’s funeral. The writing steers into the personal conflictions of dealing with his father’s actions. It is very frank and slowly peels back their fractured dynamic.

The Red Heifer Meat Solutions provides a multitude of dramatic areas. Readers watch as Jesús and his father grow and fall while in employment of this company. It also sets up the emotional pains of their family. This all leads into some very tragic events. The fallout mirrors Jesús’ broken state. The writing keeps this level of trauma in the forefront. It ultimately leads into a poetic and dark close. With the broken time, moments are more fractured than ever. This leads into a bittersweet close. Camp unloads many emotions before departing in a blink of an eye.

Zawadzki and Bellaire open events with a full page T-Rex image ready to strike. It instantly sets a strong tone for the remainder of the book. The tender moments between Jesús and his mother make an immediate impression. Their bond resonates through the ever-evolving panels. This especially pops off the pages with Bellaire’s coloring. The use of Yellows fades out everything except Jesús’ immediate moments.

This especially works in the Meat Solutions plant. The versatility between red and yellow add a certain feel to the pages. The teal coloring of the father’s downward sprial makes this portion stand out but also covers up Jesús reaction. How the panels transition makes certain moments hit differently. This comes to play with Jesús’ tragedy. Once the chapter goes to the close, the art launches some time chaos in as its’ pace car. This leads into a sequence of broken panels reflecting the time crisis. It lands into an ending page fueled by a touching reminder of love and loss. There is MUCH to applaud with the art.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

Very rarely does a series debut with a challenging concept and raise the bar with each passing page. ACE has found a way to challenge the time concepts with an unmatched emotional counter punch. Camp’s writing hits all the marks. It’s matched by Zawadzki and company blending multiple elements through incredible imagery. There is nothing like this series on the market.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1096 (DC COMICS)

Has evil won before Gotham’s protector had a chance? Asema has been one step ahead of Batman since the start. With wayward teens being killed, the Dark Knight has been searching for a break. One finally appears to be in reach. An explosion occurs that might sever any chance for justice. It also might be one escape Batman can’t solve as well.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1096 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janin, Norm Rapmund, and Wes Abbott puts the Caped Crusader right in the line of fire!

Let’s take a deeper dive into the ever-challenging case!

Taylor brings events to a close by returning to the beginning. Batman’s understanding of his father’s choice weighs heavy. Right from the beginning, Batman makes his big escape from the burning building. It does not conclude without a long awaited deduction. Asema’s true form and intentions come front and center. This leads into a startling challenge of ethics.

The writing showcases Asema’s true motives. Taylor weaves this drive into direct opposition of Batman. Having a wrong re-written is a personal temptation. It also allows Asema to attempt a twisted reasoning. This is halted by Batman’s personal choices. The dynamic is pure drama. Its’ fallout fires off quickly. Much can be said for the “Bat Family” portion of the book. It doesn’t take away from the impact of Batman’s call. The epilogue ties up loose ends while leaving small openings. It’s a fitting ending for one of the more exciting mental challenges of Bruce Wayne’s career.

Janin and company pick right up with the burning escape. The full page image gives a flare to events before diving back into drama. Asema’s reveal is bursting with anger. The stand-off with Batman shows neither’s willingness to back down. This leads into a peril of choice. The art doesn’t back down form challenging Batman at his core.

This overshadows the Bat Family’s entry into the story. They have many great action sequences. In comparison to Asema’s, there is a notable impact change. The panel remembrance to Thomas Wayne provides a great starting point to the eventual quick conflict. Events tie off with a reflective state for Wayne. It conveys the acceptance of an oath no matter the cost. The epilogue is brief but adds a complimentary piece to a larger puzzle at hand.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.1

Asema’s regin of terror comes to an emotional halt with its arc conclusion. Taylor keeps adding on the deep-rooted struggle with the writing. Janin and company piece energetic action into the personal toll taken. Readers will want to have this one on their radars for NCBD.

The mysterious group has handled the expanded JL with ease. With Grodd’s reveal, the attention shifts to how did this happen. The answer lies in the past.

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #38 by Mark Waid, Clayton Henry, Tamra Bonvillain & Steve Wands (DC COMICS)

Waid sets events in motion with a superb superhero story. The dialogue between Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent is playful from old friends. Even with Hal Jordan’s interjections, nothing feels ajar. It is as one would think when the longtime friends interact in their alter egos. Once Grodd makes his first move, the tone swings dramatically. Readers watch as this is the first run-in with the Worlds’ Finest and the dangerous foe.

Adding Flash into the mix is a natural move. Who better to assist in fighting the foe than his old nemesis? Waid throws in some great swerves as the heroes adapt to dealing with Grodd’s army. Pacing never stops escalating. Readers still back and watch as the heroes take some drastic measures. The writing shows Grodd as defiant as ever. It hits all the marks for what a superhero story should be. The fallout seems standard until the end. Once here, events shift to the present where Grodd makes another move. An excellent start to a high-octane saga between the JL eras.

Henry steps in for art duties in this initial start. The conversation between Clark and Bruce brings out their lighter sides. This especially works with Bruce Wayne. His facial reactions are a stark contrast to his Batman persona. The mood changes when Grodd enters the scene. A full page image starts off the frantic action. The art brings out the classic team-up themes before a swerve is poured in.

Once that reveal is played, it is greeted with a half page panel. Henry and Bonvillain showcase the turn of events with high drama. Readers watch as a worst case scenario happens. It doesn’t take long for the heroes to try a desperate play. The conclusion shows how luck was on their side this day. Its’ fallout leads to some stunning final panels. If there was any indication of how dire Grodd’s attack is going to be, this is it.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.1

“We Are Yesterday” throws a very unique challenge at the Justice League. Waid sets the stage with excellent writing. Henry, Bonvillain and Wands craft the vintage story with impressive art. Where things go form the last page is literally anyone’s guess.

THE NEW GODS #5 (DC COMICS)

War has come to New Genesis’ front door! The Nyctari are making their impression felt in the void of Darkseid. Complicating matters more is a New God has appeared on Earth, Is Kamal a savior or destroyer? High-Father isn’t taking any chances.

He has dispatched Orion to dispose of the child. Mister Miracle and Big Barda are the only ones standing in Orion’s path. With two conflicts happening at once, there is plenty of drama to go around for Jack Kirby’s Fourth World characters.

The New Gods #5 by Ram V., Evan Cagle, Andrew MacLean, Francesco Segala & Tom Napolitano ramps up the danger with an all new chapter.

Ram V. takes this chapter into a dire direction. The opening follows Lightray as he poses a question about mortality. His inquiry covers many different answers. One theme is very clear. Even the most powerful do not understand Death. The writing plays this into a driving factor of the chapter. It is fitting with one God dying, a new one appears to take its place.

Once the story jump back into present time, it starts finding its path. The battle of New Genesis has a regal feel. Seeing Izaya take his attack to the Nyctari kickstarts a desperate effort. The result is one that shakes the foundation of the New Gods to its core. It upstages the fight between Orion and the Frees, which is very brief. Their faceoff teases more to come next issue with guests.

For this round, it belongs to a valiant sacrifice in vain. Readers watch as all roads start coming together with a philosophical question leading the way. Where this all leads is up in the air. In the meantime, the forthcoming reunion will be one not to miss.

MacLean opens the chapter with a distinct look at Lightray’s questioning. The reactions of each God is very telling. This ultimately leads into a conversation with someone who has the answer. A near half page image gives some clues. It also serves up a solid homage to Kirby’s vision before heading back to the present.

Once here, Cagle takes over. Izaya’s entrance is given an epic image. Napolitano’s lettering sells the scene as even greater than expected. This leads to a stoic reaction of Izaya striking one of his attackers. The powerful blow starts up a series of conflicts. The potential fatal blow is diverted in a strong half page image. Readers watch as the noble sacrifice proves to be a much needed wake-up call. It leads Izaya’s path back to Earth. Judging by who shows up the last page, the full image tips off there may not be a warm welcome. Great work as always.

A simple question spawns a tragic loss for New Genesis. Ram V. puts deeper elements into the wartime battle with the writing. MacLean’s throwback pages add more momentum for Cagle and companies present day images. With all signs leading to Earth, the New Gods shouldn’t expect a warm welcome anytime soon.

He is trying to get focused on defeating Mourningstar once and for all. Having to worry about his half-sister’s involvement is a problem he doesn’t have time for.

If that wasn’t enough, an old/new friend stops by New Orleans to catch up. Some might say this is a bit “Supermassive?” Let’s find out.

One thing that has been evident since issue one is the Bell/Siegel family is anything but normal. The opening discussion between Dylan and Aurie hits its key points. The writing shows Aurie’s naive belief she can outsmart Caleb (the ghost in the armor). Dylan knows first hand how dangerous he can be. Readers watch as their first outing as a “team” goes off the rails. Luckily an old/new friend stops by to help.

Stating the Radiant Black/Rogue Sun interaction is awkward is an understatement. The writing addresses this heads on in fun banter. This rolls events into the main event. Readers watch as the unlikely trio work (somewhat) together to thwart their common foe. The fallout leads to a much anticipated conversation. Knowing what Marshall Ward is going thru in Radiant, his dialogue with Dylan showcases the young heroes growing up too fast. It will strike a chord with the readers. This transitions into a solid parting place for the Bells, but not without worry. It’s another key element that makes Rogue Sun such a great read. Always expected the unexpected.

The art locks in on Dylan’s building anger in the opening pages. This is countered with Aurie’s overconfidence. Once Bludmoon crashes the scene, pacing picks up. Watching the Rogue pair struggle dealing with a rescue attempt allows their guest to make a grand entrance. The half page image bring Radiant Black into the mix. It kicks off a series of great action shots of the trio.

In these moments, the art plays off the writing superbly. Reading Marshall’s eyes shows the readers the oddities of their history. It leads to a great group shot of the trio flying. The full page image kicks off the big throwdown. Each panel seems to feel faster in reflecting the quick action. In its aftermath, the art dive into the uncertainty of Marshall’s new stat quo. Dylan’s brashness works well off Marshall’s doubts. It’s solid perspective on the new hero’s direction. Once at the final page, more danger is teased with the parting panel. All in all, the chapter art gives readers much to enjoy.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

“The Massive’s Finest” meet again for the first time in the post Catalyst era. Parrott & Cotton bring out the heavy questions haunting Marshall and Dylan. Abel and the art team blend the supernatural action with grounded talk between mutuals. It’s destine to give fans a “supermassive” shot on NCBD.

Logan. James Howlett. Weapon X. All names connected to the best at what he does: WOLVERINE. The most dangerous X-Man has carved his way into fans hearts since his debut in 1974. Chris Claremont and Frank Miller helped tested the waters with a solo limited series. The fans wanted more and in 1988, Marvel Comics unleashed Wolvie into his first ongoing series.

From that point on, Logan’s adventures have graced comic shops in many different runs. Why is this relevant in 2025? Fans are about to witness a milestone chapter in the life of the pop culture fan-favorite.

The special is broken down into three stories. “Adamantine Unleashed” concludes the current story line with Romulus. Ahmed sets up events as straight-forward as Wolverine gets. There’s plenty of brutal action with drive behind it. One element that stands out is the father instinct. Readers watch as his daughter (Laura Kinney) is the catalyst to go extreme. Logan ends the conflict as only he can. It leads to as happy of an ending as he ever gets. This becomes a great Segway point for the next story.

“This Is Your Life” centers around a classic match-up. The writing plays into the personal trauma that Wolverine carries. Once again, Wolvie uses his fatherly instinct to push him again. This time, it’s his protective nature of Wendigo. The art showcases the a twisted trip down memory lane. Pacing keeps things pushing right along. Considering the villain at hand, it’s very textbook in execution. Not a bad thing mind you, just very balanced. What will stand out here is the finish. It is a very big turn of events. There are many questions readers will have from the final page. As one door closes after 400 issues, the next phase arrives shrouded in mystery.

Arguably the strongest portion of the book is “Onyrō”. It is a throwback to feudal times. Johnson and Spicer showcase Logan as a violent force of vengeance. The slow build panels give way to bloody justice. There is nothing safe. It is a visceral display that fits the berzerker rage. There is no better example than the full page image of Logan finishing the battle. Its epilogue is given the full page treatment as well. Readers walk away with a bittersweet moment perfectly fitting the mood.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

Wolverine celebrates a milestone with a uniquely special chapter. In present time, the writing plays into the strengths of a older and wiser Logan. Cóccolo & Valenza brings out the frenzy inside of the fighter. The cliffhanger ending is one that will have the shops buzzing with wonder. Johnson and Spicer steal the show with a timeless display of the internal conflict brooding for over 400 issues. Here’s to another 400 and many more after that!

Silence is truly golden. Paying homage to 1983’s “Silent Interlude”, a new initiative has been firing on all gears. Taking classic G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero characters and placing them in no dialogue stories has been impressive thus far. Beach Head and Jinx have lead the charge thus far.

Now, it’s time for a classic duo to step into the silent spotlight.

Romero takes Charlie Iron-Knife into a dangerous path. Something is hunting animals in a forest. When a pack makes their escape, only one survives. Its’ escape crosses Spirit. After tending to the wounded animal, the hunt is on. Pacing slows down to spotlight a few elements. The first is Spirit’s tracking skills. Romero’s art takes smaller panels to show his skills. The second is to slowly raise the drama.

A two page spread reveals a major clue. Readers watch as the pages unveil a Cobra base. While searching the area, Peter’s coloring adds more context. The covert moves eventually lead to a shocking discovery. Action starts taking over the panels. It stops to show how painful this challenge has been. Readers watch as Spirit pops a dislocated shoulder back into place. No words. Just simple lines to indicate the pain. The result leads into the closing face-off. There’s no shying away of the brutality. It leaves the audience with a cold reality of the measures taken. The final page concludes events on a more level area. Rest assured the silence still speaks loudly.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

Tracking down a deadly hunter reveals more than bargained for on this silent mission. Romero and Peter bring out the strengths and bond of Spirit and Freedom. Even with mounting odds, the pair pushes forward with disregard of their own beings. This series of missions is what you want and expect from G.I. Joe. Don’t be silent about this bold series.

With a wedding between John Henry Irons and Lana Lang taking place, Clark Kent is thrown a few challenges. This comes via three chapters. Waid takes the lead and throwsback to young Clark and Lana. It gives readers a sense of Clark’s feelings towards his first love. The writing keeps this theme going while he deals with a threat. Seeing young Clark rationalize these emotions only strengthens what’s yet to come.

Slott makes his Superman entrance with a balanced helping of action and drama. The present day brings John and Lana’s wedding. In typical fashion, if something can go wrong, it will. For this day, it’s a threat from the past. The writing lends itself to establish two conflicts. Superman handles the rematch of the past. The “Super Family” deals with some (un)natural disasters. All points drive towards a strong conclusion. Its’ fallout sets a key direction in motion. Fans also get a happy ending before the final chapter upsets everything.

Williamson comes in for the definitive close. The opening of his chapter is all wedding bliss. Clark’s feeling of joy come to the spotlight. It is a solid place to end the happy moments before investigating his recent problems. The writhing breaks down his recurring foe is a very presentable fashion. Nothing is tipped off too much for the audience. This leads to a few easter eggs before the shocking ending. At this stage, another voice emerges from the shadows. Everything fans might have thought is flipped. Once the reveal of the voice is shown, all bets are off from what’s coming next.

Jiménez takes the wheel for the majority of the book. The opening captures the innocence of the young teens. Clark’s awkwardness bounces off Lana’s genuine demeanor. This rolls into a young Superboy in action via a full page shot. The action travels into a sequence of time displaced full pages. Each carry visions of what’s to come. One in particular shakes up the young hero. It leads events back to his present time with a different path taken. The art bridges the gap from past to present with a looming feel on uncertainity.

Once in the present, Jiménez lets round two start with a bang. The future threat gets a half page welcome. It is countered with a new full page image of Clark and Lois leading the charge into action. Readers watch as the two page splashes take hold. They ramp up the excitement before coming back down to Earth in its’ close.

Chapter three (with Ortega finishing) focuses more on the Wedding reactions before speeding into the final conflict. It transitions magnificently to the final showdown. A full page image passes the Epilogue duties to Dan Mora. Once here, readers have a monster secret revealed in an intense final full page. After witnessing that, readers had better prepare for an even greater storm on the horizon.

Two timelines bring together two hearts as the Summer of Superman begins with an excellent start. The writing takes readers into the past, present and future of Clark Kent with can’t miss chapters. Jiménez constructs lights out panels with the art. Mora’s Epilogue will be the talk of NCBD so make sure you don’t miss what’s unfolding here!

Only when events finally wear down the warrior does it shift gears. Johnson reveals the master plan of Megatron with a shot of flair. It is a change that throws everything into a dark perspective. The fallout shows readers what it has been trying to teach. Events are now drawn into a newfound direction. It is one that Decepticons, Autobots and Earthlings should fear. A new form of evil has arrived.

Lullabi steps in for art duties. Readers who know his work on Battle Chasers will be excited for the action here. The initial meeting with Dezimir starts with strong images. It leads to an exciting two page spread. Watching Megatron unleashed only adds to the stakes. The ruthless aggression leads into a larger opponent via a half page image.

The return of Atrocitus leads into a deceptive take on the Lantern stat quo. Adams sets up the downfall of the Red Lanterns with a connection to the United Planets saga. Old wounds die hard with this fallout. John Stewart tries playing peacemaker but falls short. The result leads into a shocking reveal. What lies in the wake of Thanagar no one saw coming.

Readers watch as a new force has been unleashed. The dramatic first blow makes a bold statement. It also pushes to showcase a new side to the Red lantern leader. Adams’ writing builds up the suspense to a solid plateau. The result leads into steady conclusion. It plays into the more heroic side of the Lanterns. There is a moment that readers have been waiting for involving Stewart and an old friend. There is also a good parting shot setting up the next phase of the Fractured Lanterns saga. All in all, another day at the office for the Corps.

Pasarin and the art team present emotional action via the panels. The final hours of the Red Lanterns connect the failure brooding in Atrocitus. Even as Stewart tries calming the parties, Hawkwoman’s rage cannot be denied. With all these players in the mix, everyoneis outshined by the secret of Thanagar. A full page image unveils the truth about the former home world of the Winged Warrior.

Pacing picks up from here. The art team delivers on action. There is a great page depicting the eyes of Stewart and the reveal. It connects with the audience on what to fear next. The destruction is elevated by Sharpe’s lettering. As things slip further away, the art captures the heavy toll on the former red warriors. It competes with Hawkwoman’s reaction to the secret. From here, everything starts settling back to a sense of normalcy. Stewart and Hawkwoman have great character moments. Events ultimately cap off with some foreshadowing of what’s to come. Very solid work.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.2

The fight with Atrocitus concludes on a sufficient level while sprinkling in great character scenes. Adams peels back on the Red Lantern’s pain with the writing. Pasarin and the art team bring out the best of the conflict with the imagery. As one mission closes, another looks poised to start.

A true tower of Terror exists in Gotham. In his earlier years, Batman relied heavily on his detective skills. This series by DC Comics is focusing in on that era of the Dark Knight. The case at hand is centered by a startling building. Batman has forced his way inside. What he finds lurking in the shadows is more than he bargained for.

For anyone just jumping into this story, buckle in. Watters is bringing out the best detective aspects of Batman. The initial pages build up the run-in with Scarface and the Ventriloquist. Its outcome would tend to solve everything nicely. Watters adds more mystery to this case, providing a much richer tale.

A simple encounter with a family inside the building proves impactful. The time shows the hardships of a citizen. This spills into a deep cut into breaking the case. Readers watch as the story breaks away towards other residents. Their mounting anger becomes very apparent. Even as Batman works his methods, there is plenty of twists along the way. Watters leans heavy into these moments for the close. It gives readers plenty to focus on, esp. the last page. The writing with this series is second to none.

Sherman and Farrell construct very unconventional panels for pages. The opening shot of Scarface leads the intense showdown into a simple ending. Readers watch as this moment isn’t so cut and dry. A full page image of the Bat descending in the building leads into more unchartered territory. With the panel set-up, the images reflect the broken state of the residents. Even with Batman putting clues together, not everything is an easy fit.

This is complementing the story of Rickson and Michelle. Their page feels as readers are looking thru the others eyes. The art team guides readers into the next phase with some solid action. Keeping Batman lurking in shadows is a classic touch. It ramps up more suspense as the case deepens. The closing pages never shy away from shocking readers. A near full age image of the Ventriloquist hits very hard. As impactful as that it, the close upstages it. The full page image brings the house down with many holding their breath to what’s next.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The secrets inside the tower come into focus with Batman challenged on many fronts. Watters’ writing construct a multi-leveled attack. Sherman and Farrell weave in new perspectives with stunning visuals. This might be the best Batman book at the LCS .

Out of 8 Deaths comes a rebirth. Following a very polarizing run of everyone’s favorite wall-crawler comes a fresh start. Peter Parker is jobless. Norman Osborn is goblin-free. A new villain has arrived. The latest chapter of the life and times of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man starts NOW!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 Joe Kelly, Pepe Larraz, John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna, Marte Gracia, Marcio Menyz & Joe Caramagna takes center stage with a fresh new beginning.

Let’s not wait any longer and dive into the new era.

Coming from the previous run, expectations are put in an awkward spot. Knowing Kelly’s writing style, they’re amped up more than usual. The first chapter centers around a “normal” day in Peter Parker’s world. It nails the traditional “lovable loser” themes Spidey is known for. Once the story goes into a familiar showdown does it find its’ footing.

Kelly throws a twist into a classic rogue. Readers watch as it becomes the start of a larger scheme. The writing also slides in a dastardly return. This eventually leads into quite the shocking turn of events. The final pages here carry a deafening take before passing the baton to Norman Osborn.

His story reflects the new stat quo without the Goblin. It plays well to translate Normans attempt at forgiveness. Events switch gears to a more appeasing approach. How long this will last is anyone’s guess. The issue caps off with a new villain making an entrance. All in all, Kelly adds enough fuel to get a fire burning inside Spidey’s latest adventures.

Art duties are split between Larraz (Main Story) and Romita jr. (Normon and Hellgate). The panel set-up by Larraz works well to run with the dueling Peter/Spidey moments. It gives readers a great segway before his latest job begins. There isn’t much time to pause here. A two page splash of Rhino takes center stage.

Events move fast as the curve is thrown into play. This sends events towards a classic Spidey villain. A half panel indicates what’s to come next with him. Readers watch as the closing pages begin here. This story is capped off with an incredible two page splash. It’s a perfect landing spot to pass art duties to JRJR on.

His portions start with Osborn addressing reporters. It doesn’t take long for things to escalate. A would be attacker is given a half page debut. The eventual fight is classic JRJR. It sets up a solid mic drop moment before the easier close. Once here, the art showcases Spidey’s latest threat with a full page image. As previously eluded to, this chapter is juggling many hats.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.6

Welcome back Pete! Kelly’s writing brings back sorely missed themes for Spider-Man. Larraz, Romita Jr. and their respective art teams flourish in the new stat quo with solid images. It’s a welcomed return that can only push forward from here.

In four issues, Adams has shattered any preconceived notions of who Aquaman is. In its’ place is a magical tale of bravery and grit. Curry’s drive to reconnect with his wife and people proves invaluable. The flashback opening works to reconnect that point. Quickly it shifts to his present danger. During this sequence, the issue hits stride.

Pushing his newfound capabilities, Aquaman stages a daring escape. Readers sit back in awe as he evades his captors. Adams pushes the pace to a break-neck point. Only when new allies arrive does it slow down temporarily. It doesn’t take long to rev back up with a new factor in hand. The result makes quite the statement. It helps moves events along to its’ heroic close. There is no doubt that change has arrived and help those in his way.

Timms and Lokus start of the chapter with a solid throwback moment. The full page image of Mera conveys a calming point. It doesn’t last as Curry’s current situation finds him soon enough. Timms’ attention to detail of the Pirate ship is impressive. It’s upstaged by a full page image of Aquaman’s escape. Heading into uncharted water only amplifies the action.

Readers watch as Aquaman takes events up a few levels. Timms throws in a fresh dynamic with each panel. An equalizer is given a full page spotlight. It quickly becomes a prelude for the battle forthcoming. The art team gifts a gorgeous two page splash of business being handled. It ushers in the closing pages. There is a turning point playing out. This comes to a head with the final image. There’s no way readers are going to be able to handle waiting for the next chapter to drop!

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

Arthur Curry’s adventure into the unknown takes a thrilling turn in this chapter. Adams continues to set a high benchmark with the writing. Timms and the art team deliver big action as the King claims his new turf. This book is making a serious claim for “Best Superhero Series” at the LCS!

Snyder flips another classic mythos into a familiar wheelhouse. Taking Mr. Freeze’s origin to an even more tragic place works on many levels. Knowing Snyder’s impeccable Horror storytelling, the new take is brilliant. It is exactly what the Absolute Universe represents. This is no “cookie cutter” portrait of the DCU. It is a much darker place in tone and direction.

This point comes across when “the Rogues” address recent events. The conversation peels back the layers of Wayne’s secret life. Readers watch as the emotions surface and boil. It reflects the pain of losing one of their own. In some ways, that has already happened. Snyder pens the unforgiving view of Batman in a much harsher tone. It results in a few flashback moments. Once in the close, there’s a great twist set in place. Readers will watch in shock as another change has happened that no even the Dark Knight is ready for.

Martín & Vicente step in for art duties. The innocent start of Fries’ tale begins with a two page credits image. Cowles lettering tips off the impending terror. The use of coloring makes the “rogues” portion pop off pages. Vicente uses many shadows to hide faces. Snyder’s dialogue drives the body languages. Marin’s pencils only give silhouettes. It leaves elements up to the readers to decide. These panels switch gears from the tension driven flashback with Fries.

A familiar name makes a timely exit in this chapter. The near half page image sends a strong message to readers. This leads into an incredible two page splash of Batman in the night sky. Readers watch as the Fries story becomes front and center. It reveals a few horror inspired elements. This is complemented by a full page image painting a frosty picture. Events ultimately push into the closing page. The art team leaves one more shocking image before ducking out. After readers see this, there will be no doubt of how broken this new landscape truly is.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

The re-introduction of a classic rogue pushes Batman into a horrific vision with this chapter. Snyder leans heavy into a frightening take with the writing. Martín & Vicente presents a cleaner, yet dark perspective on his latest drama with the art. Brace for quite the terrifying tale unfolding now.
