If the last name “Craig” sounds familiar, Drew is the older brother to Wes Craig, who fans know from Kaya, Union and DEADLY CLASS. With this series, Drew is carving his own niche in the comic landscape so let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening here with the debut, shall we?

The saga kicks off an intimidating figure known as Draxus sitting at the helm of a spaceship. Draxus is leading a space fleet of immense size in search of the “Sharsrum” Weapon. Nothing more is known about this object’s capabilities, but looking at the size of the army trying to obtain it, the Sharsrum could be a game-changer for control of the universe.

Meanwhile on earth, a young man by the name of Grant Garrison is preparing to brave the dangers of High School. His past seems to be in question as he was found with amnesia on a highway. Principal Murray welcomes him and gives him an alibi to fit in undetected. From here, Grant is paired with Eli Sanchez. The pair makes fast friends as they head to class. In this classroom, Grant meets Jen, Eli’s step-sister. As the trio heads to lunch after class, no one is prepared for what happens next.

Grant witnesses a meteor heading right towards the school! There is no time to react. Everyone is caught in the impact!

Coming to from the crash, Jen sees Grant to find a whole new world in front of them. Everyone is gone. The only thing left is a creature in front of them looking primed to attack. As they process what is going on, an object attaches itself to Grant. The object shoots energy thru Grant, transforming him into something else. Grant mentions his mind is “Awakening”!

What has happened to Grant? Is this the key to his amnesia? What of his classmates? Readers witness first hand the birth of a hero as Grant steps up to face to creature. However, not everything is as what it seems. The mystery is just beginning but readers will want to buckle in as the story of Grant Garrison starts its’ journey.

BREAKDOWN: Craig drops an impressive debut issue pulling heavily at the influences of Jack Kirby. Grant’s mysterious background is a big part of this opening issue, but where it shines is post meteor. Once the connection is made with the “Starstorm”, Grant seems to have everything come back to him just enough to address the situation at hand. Craig still keeps some secrets kept close as the suit’s true potential hasn’t fully be unveiled. The story moves pretty swiftly leaving readers with enough to form ideas of where things are leading.

Doing double duty, Craig (w/ Finestone on the colors) dives into the classic sci-fi elements. The two-page full panel spread lets readers know how important the Starstorm is without even digging into its’ background. The reactions in high school play out as one would expect with a great panel pre-meteor impact. However, the image readers will most remember from this issue is the “Awakening” 2-page spread. Absolutely love the coloring and multiple character faces of what’s to come with Grant’s story. It is such a throwback to Kirby Sci-fi (and that is NEVER a bad thing) that it gives the following action such a vintage superhero feel. The final panel adds more questions to what is really going on but closes things out enough for readers to jump back in next issue.

For this entry, we’re continuing to follow the story of JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK and the latest escapades of a hero fallen from grace in the pages of Image Comics’ latest hit series. If anyone has ever wondered about recapturing the feel and energy from an early 90’s

Image series, this book has done it and given it a modern feel. LOCAL MAN #4 by by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio dives further into the mystery surrounding Xaver’s return home and a mounting body count following him. Let’s take a closer look at the latest chapter, shall we?

JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK’s tenure as a super hero has been put on indefinite hold after publicly being removed from the team Third-Gen. Returning home to Farmington, Wisconsin after the public disgrace, Jack tries assuming a “normal” life. However, his super hero past won’t let him go as he’s now connected to the deaths of former enemies The Hodag and Frightside. With a killer on the loose and setting Jack up for the fall, Jack breaks the rules of his Third-Gen termination & attempts to resume his heroics.

This issue picks up with Jack (and his dog) investigating a restricted water quarry where Hodag tipped off Frightside about before both were killed. He’s interrupted by Chief Bucholz who breaks the news about Frightside. Jack was last seen around both before their respective deaths. Not ready to be brought in, Jack jumps the fence and hits the water. During the swim, he finds an underground tunnel into a secret lair.

Once inside the lair, Jack begins to uncover some secrets he is not ready to deal with. He’s also paid a visit by an old teammate: Camo Crusader , who isn’t ready to forgive and forget what Jack “has done”. Readers find out more clues to why everyone hates Jack along with more clues to the bigger mystery at hand. However, nobody is ready for the later half of this issue with big surprises that change the course on everything! If readers think that’s a big deal, just wait for the final panels as there’s one last reveal to be told that gives some clarity on what to expect next.

The flashback flip-portion of this story will also give some deeper clarity on the love triangle between Crossjack/Neon/Camo Crusader that plays into present time. Expect more shocking moments with that concluding last image.

BREAKDOWN: Fleecs & Seeley start putting the puzzle pieces together behind the mystery unfolding. Seeing Jack being the only voice of reason has been a particular take that pays off each time. The meeting between him and Chief Bucholz worked to demonstrate this. Bucholz would like nothing more than to pin this on Jack due to his wife’s past with Jack. This blinds him from seeing what’s going on until he discovers evidence that backs up Jack’s actions. The moment fans will be talking about is the confrontation between Jack and Camo. The tension has been building for 4 issues now and readers get a solid payoff (even given more weight based off the flashback story). The pacing of the story keeps things moving along right to the huge reveal in the final moments. Jack’s road to redemption takes one step forward and two steps back making it compelling reading each time out.

The art reflects this heavily. Even when Jack appears to catch a break, his reactions never show too much joy. The events preceding have left him broken but he moves forward. The confrontation with Camo plays out well within the panels. The lead-in doesn’t falter when they meet. Seeing Jack outmatched and somehow maintaining made for great storytelling. Without revealing too much, the fallout of the Jack/Camo moments will be one readers will be chatting the most about. Those panels hold nothing back as the emotional build-ff comes thru with the action and resolution. The final panel leaves a few more questions to ponder.

The flip on the art style plays right into the nostalgia of those early Image comics. When readers see that, it literally is a trip back to that era and gives the current moments more weight for a bigger payoff.

Considering this book comes from the team over at Black Market Narrative, there’s no surprise on why it’s generating all the buzz it’s making. Deep Cuts #2 by KYLE HIGGINS & JOE CLARK, HELENA MASELLIS, Igor Monti and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou continues to highlight the history of Jazz music with a stop in Chicago 1928. Let’s not wait another minute and see (and hear) what’s happening here, shall we?

Last Issue, the journey started in New Orleans in 1918, showcasing a young musician’s rise in finding his voice in the city’s music scene. This issue kicks off in a dark theatre in 1928. A man is on stage, talking to the audience about how his instrument and the music it plays gives him life. As he continues to speak, the lights come on to start a musical number. However, this moment proves to be a rehearsal and the direction it goes in is one not hitting the high notes.

Immediately, the production is stopped by its’ director Gail Gelstein, who emerges from the empty seats with changes in mind. However, the pressure is building for a hit show because Gail’s show “Kansas, Oh Kansas”, is featured on Broadway. The theatre manager Herman challenges her to double down on the strengths of the show: the music. If there’s anything to save a bad show, it’s a great song. He gives her an ultimatum: Deliver a hit jazz song in 48 hours. The story centers around someone becoming a jazz man, so Gail is questioned why there’s no jazz music.

Gail reveals she doesn’t know Jazz, but Herman tells her to make it happen, no excuses. With time not on her side, Gail heads home to Chicago for a wedding. When she’s talking with her parents about the song she’s working on, Gail reveals it has no title. Her dad gives her a tip for help in the form of Ray Stroh. Stroh works for Wolverine Publishing and might be Gail’s only hope for making a hit.

Can Gail and Ray pull this off? Will the show be saved? Readers see Gail’s quest into making a great song isn’t such an easy path. There are many stumbling blocks to overcome but Gail’s not letting go of finding the hit she desperately needs. The story shifts into some different directions leading to a surprising final act. Gail’s search for the music might not be the only thing she (along with the readers) discovers along the way before closing off this chapter.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Clark continue to display the power of jazz with another strong issue. Gail’s story is one of determination mixed with self discovery along the way. Knowing she needs to incorporate jazz into her production while not knowing anything about it made for a unique dilemma. The dynamic between her and Ray works well as his excitement to help is balanced out with her drive to secure the song. Another great sequence is the banter with her brother Toby. His unlikely advice plays a big part in sending the story into a new direction. The revelation of why Gail wants to make this song work so badly is a great twist that readers can easily comprehend. It all ties back to the power of music and the connections it makes. This all leads into the final act which comes off as a bit of a surprise, but plays out showcasing the impact the music has truly made in one person’s life.

MASELLIS makes a huge splash with the art in this issue. The style feels vintage with elements of abstract mixed in. The time period is fully captured within the panels. There are many incredible full-page panels sprinkled throughout this issue. The one kicking off the musical start sets a huge tempo for the rest of the issue. Gail’s train ride form New York to Chicago is another noteworthy visual montage capped off with her starring out the window while the conductor announces the arrival. Gail’s attention is lost in the song she’s building and the color scheme used to transition (excellent work by Monti) shows how lost in thought she had been in. This comes back full circle on the train ride back, led in by the panel with Gail standing in front of her suitcases. Masellis delivers on projecting the energy of live music with Gail’s time in a few night spots. The crowd reactions let loose on how the music affects them. The emotional reaction isn’t left there as sharp readers will see through the issue: the only times Gail smiles in this issue is when she’s listening to music. It’s a testament to how impactful music can link with someone’s soul.

SUPERMASSIVE (2023) - IMAGE COMICS

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

In January of 2022, an event debuted spiraling out of the pages of the hit Image Comics series (via Black market Narrative): Radiant Black by Kyle Higgins and Marcelo Costa. The event welcomed comic readers to new heroes such as Rogue Sun, Inferno Girl Red and The Dead Lucky (via cameo). From that book, an exciting universe was born that has energized fans with its creativity and characters. The event was SuperMassive. The universe was The MassiveVerse!

The fallout from the book kicked off solo series for both Rogue Sun (by Ryan Parrott & Abel) and the Dead Lucky (by Melissa Flores and French Carlomagno). Inferno Girl Red by Mat Groom and Erica D’urso made its’ transition from Kickstarter to Image in January of 2023. With the success of those series alone, fans have been clamoring for the heroes to reunite in another crossover. Their wishes have been granted with another Massiveverse event hitting the local comic shops on May 24th, 2023!

For anyone needing a quick refresher on each character and what they do: Here’s MassiveVerse 101

The story begins Enfield, England in 1412, A battle is taking place between the Rogue Sun of that era and a mysterious figure known as Thomasin. In Rogue Sun’s possession is an obelisk that he is going to great lengths to keep. It is in a losing effort as Rogue Sun is defeated by Thomasin. She takes the obelisk and uses it to open a portal, leading to an unknown location. As she walks thru, she leaves the obelisk behind.

Fast forwarding to present time, Rogue Sun is sneaking into a museum in New York looking for the obelisk which has a personal connection to Caleb Hawthorne. With the object in hand, Rogue Sun flies to Lockport, Illinois to recruit Radiant Black on his latest mission. Readers see an awkward moment with Marshall, Nathan, Caleb and Dylan “meeting” for the first time. All the while, the actions of Rogue Sun have garnered the attention of Morrow and its’ latest security addition: Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka The Dead Lucky.

What is so special about this obelisk? Readers quickly find out it is the key to opening the door to the Holy Grail! With the power that could come from finding it, it is no wonder why all parties have varied vested interest in acquiring it. “With Great power comes great responislbilty” takes a whole new meaning as this story progresses. Once all parties finally meet in Enfield, the heroes open the door into an adventure they (and readers) won’t soon forget.

Readers will be glued to the pages seeing how these individuals survive the challenges in their way of acquiring the grail. The action is box-office as they progress thru on their quest. There is no shortage of drama with all the personalities involved. They make for some of the best moments in this issue when the clashes arise. However, no one is ready for the surprises mixed in for the latter portion of the book. The closing act will catch readers off-guard, but the payoff is sure to please. If that wasn’t enough, just wait for the final pages. I can’t stress this enough, when you hear “Massive-Verse Event” that means AN EVENT! Readers get a total picture that all ties together for a satisfying conclusion and why when all these heroes come together, readers can only describe it as “Super Massive”!

BREAKDOWN: The Massiveverse writing team plays to the strengths of their characters to make for a very enjoyable read. Marshall’s comedic timing is spot-on in breaking up the more dramatic moments. Bibiana also sneaks in a well timed “Indiana Jones” line that works perfectly as well. The story itself is an intriguing one as each hero is tested on how far would they go to get everything. The emotional toll the mission takes is easy to connect with as there are deep personal roots behind each motivation. The action scenes are well paced, giving the characters enough time to properly interact in-between, making for the best scenes. Not everything goes smoothly and that makes for added tension. It comes off very organic and not just “another super-hero team-up”. Each character gets an ample amount of panel time to move their own stories along with the main plot. The final act has great surprises that raises a few questions along the way, but that’s for another time. No spoilers on those moments, but rest assured, the readers will be excited to see them transpire. The fallout ends things with complete closure before sending everyone onto their next paths. The epilogue is something special that fans won’t be expecting but this goes into how creative the teams are behind this event. Get ready!

Di Nicuolo and Baiamonte add such energy to the pages of this event. The action panels waste no time in setting a frenetic pace. There are a few 2 full page panels that are absolutely incredible with one being a game-changer later in the issue. The art team also presents Thomasin as a compelling character through the various panels. Her story comes across as one of redemption moreso than sheer searching for power. The interactions she has with Bibiana come across as if they both share some common themes between them and why they are invested in the Grail. The comedic expressions Marshall shows in more serious moments work with giving the readers a solid break before diving back into the drama enfolding. The closing moments ramp up the action before slowly bringing everyone down to say goodbye for now. Excellent epilogue to close out the event with an image that will have readers talking without question.

Without question, The Massive-Verse team accepts and exceeds the challenge mixing in superb writing and energetic artwork in an adventure fitting for the title. ARCADE KINGS #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re taking a look at a brand new series from Image Comics that you don’t want to pass up on for New Comic Book Day! With the new Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom being the talk of pop culture fans this week, it is very ironic (and simultaneously poetic) that the world of video games plays a part into this saga shrouded in mystery. Arcade Kings #1 by DYLAN BURNETT (Cosmic Ghost Rider), Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini welcomes readers to Infinity City and an enigmatic figure starting his own heroic quest. Let’s not delay and “press start” to this review already. Ready for the first level?

The story begins in Infinity City. A prize fight is happening in front of a capacity crowd. In one corner, a fighter named “Ziegler”. In the other is world champion Victor McMax! The action is flying in the ring, but looking from the outside are two young boys with very different personalities. One is Joe, who wants to follow in the champ’s footsteps. The other is his younger brother Ken, who seems disinterested in the action in the ring. Once the final bell hits, McMax retains his title via KO.

The story jumps a short time later and McMax announces his retirement under mysterious circumstances.

From here, readers are taken to Valleytown, a suburb of Infinity City. At the Round House Arcade, there is a commotion as someone was just defeated on a game. Sitting at the game is a figure wearing a unique helmet asking for who’s next. The figure is Joe. When a new competitor steps up, readers are taken on a flashback to three weeks prior where Rikio, the nephew of the arcade owner was assaulted by some punks. He’s saved by Joe, who fends them off. An offer is made following that Rikio can’t say no to: Joe stays at the arcade “to lay low” and in return, he will replace the broken joystick Rikio had and be the protector of the arcade. In three weeks, the deal seems to be paying off for both.

That is until a stranger named Molly walks in to challenge Joe. This is no ordinary player as Molly walks in with her own robot. Molly also says something that triggers a flashback to Joe’s past. What gets said to force an impulsive action? How does Joe fare to this unlikely challenge? Readers sit ringside as Joe has his biggest challenge to date. The fallout sets the tale into a new direction with a final act that keeps readers guessing what will happen next as the story levels up.

BREAKDOWN: Burnett is on double duty for this series and its easy to see he’s crafting something special within these pages. From the opening bell, the pace sets a high rhythm, giving readers just enough information about the young boys before jumping ahead to where Joe’s journey takes shape. His initial start is cryptic as not much is tipped off concerning why he’s trying to stay out of the spotlight. This changes dramatically when Molly hits the scene and peels back a layer of his past. The moment is brief but makes a big impact in the story. Joe’s drive for his cause is memorable as he thrusts himself into fighting when needed while running under the radar of his past. The closing moments are bittersweet as things shift gears but like every great mystery, not everything is revealed at the first chance. The closing moments bring up speculation of what has transpired over the years, btu this is nothing but win for the reader.

The artwork is high energy. The coloring of Baiamonte and Antonellini (along with Simona Iurato and Sharon Marino) makes the sights of Infinity City pop off the panels. It reflects the exhilarating pace of the fighting mixed with the overall story. This is illustrated perfectly with the 2 page spread in the beginning of the issue. Readers will feel the excitement in the crowd with the action in the match. This carries through each fight and it delivers without fault. Burnett’s art plays into the emotional rush of the action. There are great non-action sequences to with a final “walk-off” into the sunset balanced out with a strong closing visual to take readers into the next chapter.

Arcade Kings #1 hits a nice 1-2 combo of action and drama that the readers won’t need to worry about the judges scoring. Burnett and his team drop an emotionally charged tale clouded in secrets and combat with solid writing and dynamic art that doesn’t need a cheat code. NO/ONE #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re following the clues surrounding the biggest mystery in comics: WHO IS NO ONE? The Image Comics series via Black Market Narrative has been an absolute smash hit with readers as both #1 and #2 have gone into 2nd and 3rd printings. The way that this series has branched outside traditional comics promotion is incredible with its companion podcast and viral shorts. “No/One” feels more like an event rather than a series. Note, this is only after two issues of the series. To cause that strong of a reaction after only two issues is a testament to the amazing work being done with this series.

NO/ONE #3 by Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, Geraldo Borges, Mark Englert & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou dives back into the story after last issue’s shocking ending. All bets are off where the fallout goes from here, but let’s not wait any longer. Shall we resume the mystery of “Who Is No One”?

Louis Capel. Michael Kern. Coach Nathan Cade. All dead with a possible common thread connecting them. That common denominator is the mysterious vigilante known as “No/One”. However, it is more complicated that it seems. “Richard Roe” aka “the accountability Killer” or No/One is publicly known as Aaron Kern. Kern has been in Allegheny County Jail after being caught and confessing to being the killer. So if he’s behind bars, who is the copycat attacking under the mask? This is on top of Assistant chief Ben Kern (Aaron’s father) being attacked and saved by No/One?!

No/One also has caught the eyes of Pittsburgh Ledger Editor Teddy Barlow and reporter Julia Paige who are covering the case via podcast. Detectives Singh and Harper are on the case, trying to make sense of it all. The City of Pittsburgh is on edge. Senator Noah Kemp (who survived a No/One attack) arrives and makes a public plea to bring swift legal change to protect the people from No/One. Tate looks to Kern for support and is answered with a public resignation instead.

This issue opens Police Sergeant Vince Harmon sitting with Ben Kern setting up an exit interview to tie up loose ends. This is interrupted by Lieutenant McGarrity, who barges in with questions of his own for Kern. The conversation is heated as the frustration of the case is boiling over. Once cooler heads prevail, the case file is given to Kern for one last attempt to find a clue to solve the case.

Meanwhile, Julia and Teddy are discussing Aaron Kern’s timeline when she receives a call from her mother, FOC News host Alanna Page, who is going on-air to talk about the case. When declined, Alanna’s attention shifts to another case. That case involves a man by the name of Kenneth Chbosky. Shortly after the show, Chbosky reaches out to Julia for an interview due to her No/One coverage.

How does things fare with another profile case? How does this fit in with the No/One case? Readers witness what transpires and what dangers follow. With the spotlight burning hotter on all the major players, the case shifts into new directions. With so many vested parties searching for answers, there is no shortage of enjoyment for readers to have with this series.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Buccellato focuses heavy on the tension the No/One case is having on the citizens of Pittsburgh. Right from the opening segment, they set the tone of anger and bitterness directed at Ben Kern. It’s countered with his own tormented feelings with how his family is attached to the case. The story with Julia this issue presents an interesting dynamic with her mother that has only begun to scratch the surface. It is overshadowed by the events involving her and Chbosky, which the writing team shows how dangerous her line of work can be. The fallout changes some preconceived notions surrounding her investigation and raises more questions heading further into the mystery. Even with the focus being on Julia for the majority of this issue, the main supporting characters get enough panel time to advance their parts. The conclusion brings one character full circle as anyone involved with this case simply just can’t walk away from it.

First off, how fantastic is the main cover by Borges and Mark Englert! It’s subtle but makes a statement. Heading into the issue, the emotional outbursts pour out of the panels when it involves Ben Kern and Lieutenant McGarrity, Readers can easily connect the pent-up frustration that explodes when Kern tries answering the questioning. Julia and Chbosky’s portion of the story comes off brooding and tense, which pairs perfectly with the blunt writing of Chbosky’s character, The fallout is swift and impactful as no panel goes wasted in redefining Julia’s opinions concerning the story she is diving into. There’s a great near fill page panel that readers can fully see the change unfolding surrounding Julia’s case. Panel structure is also giving this series a more powerful feel to how No/One’s actions have grabbed the city’s attention. There’s a certain energy that this book brings that gets amplified by the amazing art.

Black Cloaks (Kiros Law Enforcement) Phaedra Essex and Pax have been assigned to solve the murder case involving Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the royal family of Kiros. Like any high-profile case, the pressure is on the law-enforcement team to find answers. This case hits close to Essex because at one point, she was connected to Freyall. Readers saw their past play out last issue connecting the emotional impact this case is having on Essex. With the city on the verge of a public meltdown, time is running out on the pair to provide closure. Other factors have come into play such as the Kiros Three (the most powerful humans on Kiros), who have a vested interest in how things play off. Even after last issue’s revelation that Freyall’s death appears to have been a suicide, there still is more to uncover with this case. Their latest lead puts them on a path to meet an unexpected figure: PHINNEAS II OF THANE, Essex’s father!

This issue opens up with the Black Cloaks sitting inside the home of Phinneas. The tension is palpable was Essex is none too happy to see her dad. In contrast, Phinneas is disregarding Essex’s warning of how the Kiros Three are appearing to pin the crime on him. Essex lays out her theory that the queen is involved in Freyal’s death but it falls on deaf ears. Phinneas laughes at what is proposed and throws something back right in Essex’s face to counter. When the cloaks are ready to leave, Phinneas offers a name that might be of more service.

In the meantime, Essex is showed major revelations by her brother Devaki that further widens the gap between her and her estranged father. There’s little time to process what’s happening as Phinneas’ name turns out to be someone neither Essex or Pax want to see. The tension ramps up for readers as more clues are given that lead to more options being brought to the forefront. What will Essex do with this new information? A course of direction is set that puts the Black Cloaks closer to the truth but at what cost? Can Essex and Pax find a way to the truth? What do they find when journeying on this new plan of attack? More questions are formed as the pair (and readers) stumble onto a vision within the final panel that adds more fuel to an already mysterious fire.

BREAKDOWN: Thompson keeps taking readers deeper into the drama with this latest chapter. The family dynamic between Essex and Phinneas stood out as it showed Essex in a new light. The strain on her relationship played out making Essex face a wide variety of emotions. There is a scene involving a painting that readers can instantly see Essex demonstrate this point. The build-up to Phinneas’s person of interest comes off big due to his non-chalant ways when getting questioned. It is at that moment, the story shifts into high gear, sending the pair into a risky situation, Pacing moves things right along while allowing the characters to shine when the spotlight is on them. The latter half of the book doesn’t slow down as Essex and Pax make a move that could be the break they so desperately need. The closing moments throw more questions into their case and that’s never a bad thing for the reader.

McClaren and Carey keep the panels more grounded than in recent issues to drive home the emotional pull on Essex and her father. The reactions to her father’s answers added more weight to her own dealing with the case. The scene involving the painting is another example of how visually creative this series is with every issue. The world of Kiros pops off every panel. The painting plays into showing a different side of Essex that readers will get a more complete idea of what she is feeling in dealing with this very personal case. The actions following Phinneas’s “help” swing the story into a more shadowing feel which pays off on the final moments. The final full page panel closes up events, leaving much to process as the case deepens going into its’ next phase.

SOMETHING EPIC #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we are checking out a brand new series from Image Comics that is generating a huge buzz heading into New Comic Book Day. Something Epic #1 from SZYMON KUDRAŃSKI (Spawn, Punisher) has a very unique concept behind it with some fantastic visuals to match. Readers will be challenged with “Is Perception really Reality’? What is so special about fourteen-year-old Danny Dillon? Let’s take a closer look at what all the hype is about, shall we?

The issue opens up with a woman giving birth to a young boy she names Danny Dillon. Danny is inter-monologuing about imagination is the first thing created prior to when we are born. The story speeds up to when he is a young boy. As Danny is walking in a wooded area, he looks to the sky. Flying about him is a superhero that echoes the outline of a very familiar hero. Danny gives a great insight on the concept of imagination, perceiving it as a “gift”. Danny goes to a doctor’s office to be checked out but he is diagnosed as “normal.” The doctor claimed Dany has an “overactive imagination” due to his elevated nervous system. No matter how it is defined, Danny is a special child with a “gift”. His drawings weren’t fake, they were his depictions of real life.

Another day, Danny and his mom are having a conversation about his schooling amongst other topics. During the talk, something grabs her keys. When looking around, Danny’s mom is confused on where they are. Danny senses where they might be as he looks through a mouse hole to find them. The story shifts as Danny moves through the house to the basement. On this trip, he comes across two figures that he knows all too well: an animated cat named Drill and a vampire named Marcus. Danny brushes by them and even at one point (via flashback), shows them to his mother who can’t see them. Only Danny can see the characters

This leads to Danny further breaking down his world. He can see things few others can. In his words, Energy that is Imagination is transformed into something else. Readers are walked thru a guide of Danny’s life as the things he have seen can not be comprehended as real. As he progresses forward, the worlds start blending a bit more as the figures are appearing more and more in the “real world”. This comes to a dramatic halt has the final act brings Danny’s life back to a grounded place with a ominous feel taking readers into the next chapter with a looming shadow lurking on the young boy’s future.

BREAKDOWN: KUDRAŃSKI provides a unique tale that poses many questions of what is real vs. what is imagination. Danny’s tale starts out as any young child’s would. Believing in “make believe” characters isn’t that outlandish. However, the theme of Perception vs. Reality never leaves readers minds. Danny is well educated in this area as the writing portrays him in touch with the aspects of his reality. For being so young, Danny never appears scared or rattled at what he comes across. It is a “new normal” that he has become comfortable living in. The closing of the issue brings up some theories of what is unfolding that will challenge Danny’s world. Readers will have much to decipher heading to the next chapter.

The art is stunning throughout. The use of 12 panel pages jumps out right from the start, right down to the placement of credits mixed in within said pages. The full page panels exemplify big moments when they appear. Nothing feels overused or forced to amp up a segment. Danny’s definition of his world via 2-page full panels is what fans will resonate with the most. It is a clear picture of what Danny sees and adds more to the argument of is his perception really reality. Danny’s reactions are different than hat readers might be expecting to see. There is never a sense that there is danger or fear when these characters pop up. Danny is portrayed as completely comfortable in this world. The only time there is a sense of doubt is the final pages, which challenges readers on what they see vs. what they think they know.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The world of Danny Dillon is an eye-popping experience that will question what readers see vs. what they think. KUDRAŃSKI brings this to page with stellar artwork balanced out with a story growing by each page. The concept has only begun to step into focus, making this a book you want to keep an eye out for at the Local Comic Shops.

Fate has taken a truck driver named Dom and a crash survivor named Birdie & made them an unlikely duo connected to a mysterious object. This object appears to have crossed them into a mirrored dimension with faceless figures trying to acquire what they possess. Last issue sent the pair to a truck stop with a mysterious figure being very cryptic about what the truth is. The truck stop itself seemed suspicious as well, with the pair leaving and appearing to be back to their rightful time. However, things have changed with the pair being in pain when separated form the object and a killed faceless being turning into a human form. Now law enforcement are closing in to investigate, Dom and Birdie are searching for answers and dodging the law.

This issue opens up with FBI agent Theresa Weaver arriving on the scene. She immediately takes over the case from the local officers, who appear to be in way over their heads. Weaver takes some pictures of the scene and breaks down the victim’s remains. Leaving the scene, Weaver is in contact with her supervisor going over notes. Readers clearly see that the FBI knows more about what is going on than they’re letting on. At her hotel room, she is visited by Deputy Dunn, who informs her of the initial accident involving Birdie.

Once at the scene, Weaver starts adding things up. Readers start getting more pieces of the puzzle revealed as Weaver furthers her investigation. The final act shows Weaver’s connection to the case might not be as cut and dry as is let on. That said, no one is expecting what unfolds in the closing moments. The mystery surrounding the object has just begun.

BREAKDOWN: Lemire takes the lead characters out for this issue and devotes the time to establishing Agent Weaver to the audience. Weaver comes across as a no-nonsense agent but as things move on, Lemire sets up the slow reveal attaching her to what is going on with Dom and Birdie. The overall story had some clues revealed but still has fans guessing at what the true nature of things are. Pacing was fine as the “day in the life” model for Weaver worked to connect her to the readers. The closing sequence was a solid surprise and throws more mystery onto an already growing tale.

Walta and Bellaire keep the gritty and dark feel of the story going even without Dom or Birdie involved. The mannerisms of Agent Weaver play into her familiarity with the case at hand without tipping off too much. The interactions with the locals establish this quickly carrying through to the panels with Deputy Dunn. The closing sequence gave this issue a kick of excitement with a strong simple panel to put a closing on the transpiring events.

In his wildest dreams, Nathan Burnett could never have imagined when he returned home to Lockport, Illinois from Los Angeles how much his life would change. After coming into contact with a mysterious object, Nathan became the figure known as Radiant Black. Since that moment, his life has been a non-stop roller coaster with his best friend Marshall now intertwined in this superhero world. Both have done heroic actions, but their latest challenge may be too great to overcome.

Something is coming to Earth. Something they might not be able to stop. Factor in that their powers are not working properly and it’s a blueprint for disaster. With the future looking dire, a choice was made. Nathan and Marshall make a return to a place where both are familiar with. They return to Existence.

This issue kicks off with Nathan and Marshall crashing back into the realm of Existence. The pair is greeted by an old “frienemy” in <001>, who readers haven’t seen in quite some time. He assumes the role as guide into the vastly changed landscape. Existence as they knew it is no more. It is devasted and fragmented. <001> speaks of what is needed to try fixing things but it is not an easy road.

Nathan and Marshall must search for a key element that could be the missing piece to save Earth from impending doom. On this journey, Nathan and Marshall are challenged to confront their own self reflections to move forward. As the line goes… “There is only truth in Existence.” It really pushes the pair into uncharted water? Will they succeed? Readers find out very quickly that there is no easy way out for what Nathan and Marshall need to deal with. The later portion of the book hi readers direct with addressing a discord long suspected. This all leads to a resolution with a final parting image that has huge ramifications heading into the Catalyst War.

BREAKDOWN: Throughout the course of this series, Kyle Higgins has crafted challenges that have tested the bond of Nathan and Marshall on many levels. This issue harkens back to the theme and emotions of another classic issue in the series: Issue #10. Whenever Existence has been in play, it brings out something special within the story. The journey they embark on makes both characters face lingering plot points directly in front of the readers. Higgins depicts their friendship as their greatest strength and weakness at varying moments. There is a very strong portion of the story where this comes to light and gives the readers a sense at what each is going thru heading towards their fateful ending. Once at that stage, the closing portion presents a very direct ending which readers will have feelings about. It’s also noteworthy that the final image featured proves once again why what Kyle Higgins and company at BMN continue to push the creative bounds like no one else in the business.

Marcelo Costa and Igor Monti paint an eye-popping landscape throughout this issue. Existence feels worn down and barely hanging on. The opening two-page spread is absolutely phenomenal. It sets the pace for what lies ahead. As previously mentioned, there are some homages to Issue #10 that long-time readers will pick up on and see what compares and contrasts. Monti’s coloring adds such a new element to the already impressive visuals. The whole landscape feels different and energetic at the same time. There is a great deal of two-page spreads throughout the issue that gives the moments showcased that much more gravity to the story. The sequences leading into the final act demonstrate to the readers the anguish and eventual truth of the lingering plot points. It pays off big once the final image hits the page. A perfect closing full page panel to conclude this crucial timeframe of the MassiveVerse’s flagship book.

Higgins, Costa, Monti and Carey present two heroes outmatched for what lies ahead but refusing to surrender with superb writing and an amazing visual experience. There is a reason this line of books are comics’ most exciting line and led by Radiant Black. The buzz surrounding this series never fails to deliver and this issue will be one fans will be talking about this week on New Comic Book day. Highest possible recommendation.

The story kicks off in the era of New Orleans in 1917. A young man with case in hand named Charles Stewart walks thru the streets, ignoring the people around. Stewart is focused on the musical notes filling the air. He is “looking” for a certain sound and is determined to find it through the busy city. After some stops, the young man finds what or should we say who he’s looking for. Making a run for the door, Stewart runs into the bouncer of the club and is turned away for his age. Determined to play in the show, Stewart pulls out his Clarinet and starts playing thru an opened window. This causes the bouncer to approach Stewart to stop him. Before he can make a move, a man peaks his head outside and invites Stewart in. That man is none Jack Cartier, the charismatic star of the show inside.

Cartier convinces the bouncer to let Stewart stay. Cartier recognizes Stewart from trying to crash other shows. It is revealed that Stewart wants to join Cartier’s band. Cartier is impressed by the effort of the young man but doesn’t have him join in the show that night. Instead, Stewart is offered to join Cartier’s band for a parade the next day. Excited beyond belief, Stewart leaves with his dreams in sight. Returning home, he greats his grandmother about his new job. She tries to pass on a warning of “Be careful around musicians. They will break your heart.” It reflects a similar message she gave Charles’ mother. The next day, Charles arrives for the show but finds out it’s not what he was thinking. Cartier greets him with the “honor” of holding his case while they walk in the parade, claiming their isn’t a current spot but if something happens, Charles is in. The parade leads to another opportunity with Cartier, one that Charles will actually be playing his instrument in.

Where is this job based? Readers find out quickly that the entry level Charles is starting at might not be ideal to his grandmother’s liking. The job leads to a whole new world that Charles may or may not be ready for. All he has to guide him is a love for music and makes an unlikely friend in a woman named “Dixie” who works at the establishment. With all these outside influences , what does the future hold for young Charles? Readers see a journey into self discovery as Charles begins to grow in his voice and playing which leads into many surprise directions. The ending is fitting for a first issue that has only begun to show what it’s all about.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Clark start this series off on a very strong note. Seeing the hopefulness pour out of Charles while he is chasing his dream is a theme that drives this first issue. His willingness to be a part of the band moves him into crossing paths with a variety of characters and morals. The relationships that form with the young player along the way each have a significant impact on his path. Cartier comes across as a charming but suspicious musician that reflects a side of the world Charles wants to enter. Due to his eagerness to play, Charles looks past what Cartier is doing but it plays into his eventual growth in this story. Dixie makes a great counter to Cartier as her intentions come across as genuine. The pacing of the tale allows moments to build along with seeing the overall effect music has on Charles. It is easy for readers to connect with what Charles is aspiring for. Once the closing moments begin, there are payoffs for the build that tie all the sub-stories together. It is a solid beginning to introducing readers to the power of jazz and music as a whole.

The art of Beyruth and Monti visualize the hypnotic power of music that engulfs Charles. His search for Cartier’s band comes across almost trance-like as he dodges the world around him until he finds the source. The depiction later in the book when Charles is paying at the new job stands out for much of the same reason. The panels’ coloring of notes and playing comes across as impactful to the listeners in attendance. The expressions of Cartier adds another dynamic to the story. He always comes across smiling with a devilish smirk . This plays into many of his actions with all the characters (not just Charles). Perfect example of this is with Mother Martha. The way that Cartier switches directions with his banter plays right into his influence on Charles and the overall story. The closing brings everything together and sets the tempo for more adventures to come.

FINAL POINT: Higgins, Clark, Beyruth and the team invite readers on a compelling introduction to one of music’s most famous genres. Readers won’t be able to deny seeing how one young man’s ambition leads him on a journey of self-discovery thru the mesmerizing appeal of jazz. Sharp writing and art fill the pages with bringing the story of Charles Stewart front and center to comic readers. You definitely don’t want to miss this on New Comic Book day.

W0RLDTR33 #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to a brand new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast.

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest new series from the mastermind behind the mega hit series “Something Is Killing The Children.” Considering who else is along for the horror tale being told, it completely justifies the hype surrounding this book. W0RLDTR33 #1 by JAMES TYNION IV, FERNANDO BLANCO, JORDIE BELLAIRE and ADITYA BIDIKAR from Image Comics embarks a journey into the darkest portion of the internet known as the Undernet and the results are terrifying.

Before we get started with the review, this book has some extreme violent imagery and themes throughout that might be upsetting to some. Reader discretion is strongly advised before jumping into this issue.

That said, if you’re still in for the review, let’s see what all the hype is about, shall we?

W0RLDTR33 #1

An ominous quote welcomes readers to this series: “ Let me Tell You How Much I’ve Come To Hate You Since I Began To Live” - Harlen Ellison “I Have No Mouth and I need To scream (2024).”

A naked woman opens her laptop after committing a murder in what appears to be a hotel room. Signing in with the username of “PH34R” , She accesses the Undernet. With images of violent acts appear all across the screen, she focuses in on one with almost 30,000 views! Readers watch in horror as a young man knocks on a random house and flashes his cell phone in front of an unsuspecting victim, making them disoriented before slitting the gentleman’s throat. The killer is talking to the watching audience and going through his process of murder. The killer does the same thing to the woman in the kitchen of the house before going into the bathroom. The killer is a fifteen year old named Gibson Lane with a camera strapped to his head. On his stream, he brags about killing forty people, much to the delight of “PH34R” watching.

From here, the story shifts to a man named Ellison and his girlfriends Fausta driving by a mountain side en route to Pittsburgh. Ellison is talking about how he found his brother talking about what he saw on the dark web and it was some truly disturbing images. Fausta tries calming his nerves but with little success. While driving, she searches his brother’s social media to calm his nerves more but sees something that chills her to the bone instead. They pull the car over and see that Ellison’s fears were correct that something was terribly wrong.

The story shifts to a man named Gabriel watching on the news about Gibson’s killing spree (now at sixty plus). He stares into a picture on the wall, which triggers a flashback. During this moment, readers see a young Gabriel along with other teenagers trying to stop something from leaving the computer servers they are on. The stakes feel huge for, as one person points out, “we’re just kids”.

The story shifts back to the present as Gabriel calls Liam (presumed to be the boy with the “kids” quote from the flashback. The conversation is uncomfortable, but the message is clear: the undernet has to be stopped from spreading. Gabriel mentions a possible solution is back active: a message board known as W0rldtr33. Gabriel summons Liam and the others from the flashback to meet in Pittsburgh to take this challenge head on.

At this stage, Ellison arrives at the police station to see his brother. However, he’s not alone in arriving at the station. Who else appears wanting to see Gibson? Readers see a final act that no one can predict which way it goes. The final image caps off a brutal and violently horrific saga that has just only begun.

BREAKDOWN: Tynion wastes no time in setting things in motions with this story. Each major player (thus far) gets their fair share of panel time to start their stories but all pale in comparison to the heinous actions of Gibson. Tynion writes him as a delusional psychopath throughout his murder spree. Ellison comes across as a caring brother, lost at what to do with the situation at hand (and rightfully so). “PH34R” and Gabriel have only begun to make an impact but, at first read, they have a destined collision course waiting in the wings. The story itself is extremely upsetting as the Undernet has only shown a fraction of what its capable of. It is pure horror at a terrifying high level. As with most of his writing, no one is better at the slow burn build than Tynion. With only one issue down, readers sense the terror behind what is about to come and will be locked in for the long haul to see where this story is heading.

Blanco and Bellaire spare no expense in visualizing the insanity unfolding within these pages. The murder spree is horrific and unapologetic. The set-up of 12 or 9 panel pages gave those disturbing moments a more direct impact when reading. Gibson looking in the bathroom mirror after killing the couple was a blunt depiction into his madness. His mannerisms will be unsettling to some readers. It’s matched on impacting the readers with Fausta’s reaction to finding his social media videos. Once her tears start, readers will connect with her reaction to what she just saw. “PH34R” stands out (not because she is nude the majority of time) from her slight grin seeing the lunacy transpire. The final act caps off the brutal tale perfectly with a final parting image showing the fallout response to what has just unraveled before he audience.

FINAL POINT: The darkest secret of the internet steps into the spotlight in the pages of Image Comic’s latest series. Tynion, Blanco and the team present an absolutely frightening tale of horror in disturbing fashion. Solid storytelling equaled out with alarming imagery gives this story a distinct feel as it progresses to the next chapter. Makes sure to keep an eye out for this on New Comic Book Day.

ROGUE SUN #12 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, readers have arrived at the finale of the second arc from one of the breakout series hailing from comics’ most exciting line: The Massive-Verse! Since its’ debut over a year ago, the adventures of Dylan Siegel have captured readers attention and never let go. With masterful plot twists thrown in the journey of stepping out of his father’s shadow and forging his own legacy, Dylan has faced adversity head on but his latest foe might be too much for the young hero to handle. ROGUE SUN #12 by Ryan Parrott, Abel, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey (editor Michael Busittil) concludes the “Hellbent” story arc before all eyes shift towards one of 2023’s biggest comic events: SUPER-MASSIVE 2!

After last issue, all bets are off on how Dylan will handle the recent actions of (arguably) his greatest foe. Let’s not wait another second and dive into the culmination of this fantastic second chapter, shall we?

Rogue Sun #12

Dylan Siegel is the latest to bear the mantle of Rogue Sun. After his father is killed, Dylan is thrusted into the role and unfortunately for him, life as he knew it was over. Meeting an entire family he never knew, dealing with the normal drama involved with high school and fighting dangers that have tested him to his limits is what Dylan juggles while trying to escape his father’s legacy and define his own in the process.

On his latest adventure, Dylan has come across a foe that left him for dead after their first encounter: Hellbent. Being gifted abilities from the evil Mourningstar, Hunter aka Hellbent has been seeking revenge on Dylan after an encounter with Hunter’s father left him in dire shape. Much like Dylan, Hunter looks to break from his father’s legacy and carve (literally) a path of his own.

Dylan does have one factor in his side that might be the deciding factor in this conflict. Dylan has a new mentor in the form of Caleb Hawthorne, the KNIGHT SUN! Caleb sends Dylan in the direction of the Aviary realm of the Ravyn Queen. Making the journey into the realm, Dylan secures a magical quill that could be the tipping point to stop Hellbent. Dylan needs to move fast because Hellbent has crashed the homecoming dance in an attempt to draw out Rogue Sun and get the quill.

This issue starts off with Hellbent addressing the young crowd in attendance of the Crescent City Homecoming Dance. Hellbent dismisses the security trying to stop him and threatens a student who stands up to him. Luckily, Rogue Sun finally arrives in dramatic fashion and stops Hellbent from harming the student. Hellbent demands Rogue Sun give him the quill that he was ordered to get, but Dylan wants the student body’s safety assured before anything.

Much to the surprise of everyone, a new player crashes (literally) the dance. Someone made a deal with Mourningstar and the price is the quill. Dylan’s had enough to deal with facing Hellbent alone. What will he do with two deadly threats in front of him? With the assist from Caleb, Dylan draws his flaming sword and prepares for the new threat. Hellbent acts quickly and attacks while Dylan is facing the new threat. The action takes a slow pause as Dylan loses ground.

At this point in the story, Readers need to brace for one of the more emotional moments in the series as one person’s actions show grave consequences. This one moment causes a domino effect sending Dylan into uncharted territory for his superhero career. What action transpires that shakes Dylan to his core? Can he overcome the dual threat of his adversaries? The fallout from the homecoming dance will be felt for many issues to come. The final act redefines Dylan’s path but not without changing the status quo. Just when you think that this issue has stopped with the major moments, the closing pages drop another big moment that will have fans talking until the next issue drops post Supermassive 2.

BREAKDOWN: One thing readers can take to the bank is when Parrott is presenting an ending to a chapter, readers can expect big moments. There is no shortage of those in this issue. The set-up builds off Dylan's desperation to not only find a way to win, but fill the void left by his father. Dylan is still very much in the learning phase of his career and actions he does reflect that. However, seeing that one character’s actions and consequences is a major turning point in Dylan's journey. The stakes have always been high but seeing Dylan react to this is a moving moment and one that connects him to an emotional he's been blocking off: caring. Readers finally see a break in his armor, setting up for a monster character change to come. Parrott plays right into the impassioned response to what transpires with Hellbent and runs with it into the closing of the book. The writing has always been well structured and once the key moments hit, readers can’t help but become entangled with Dylan and what plays out next.

Abel delivers on elevating the important moments to greater heights. When Rogue Sun finally hits the dance, readers are gifted a near full page shot of the young hero flying in for the save. This plays off Hellbent talking to his hostages at the dance. The entire time readers can only see one of his eyes glowing but can still read his body language to know the points he is making. The actions scenes move swiftly and convey how high significant the battle for the quill is shaping up to be. That said, the panels showcasing the point in the story that changes everything (“To live by the sword….”) is the one readers will be most impacted with. Abel brings all parties’ involved and their reactions front and center to the audience. They set the pace for the rest of the issue especially when Dylan has more time to reflect on what just happened. Incredible final page to close out an intensely strong finale to the arc.

FINAL POINT: Rogue Sun has been a definition of excellence when it comes to superhero comics due to the consistently impressive work from Parrott, Abel and the rest of their team. Building into this second volume finale, Dylan Siegel has been tested like never before. Issue #12 gives readers shocking moments and huge shifts in status quo that even the most seasoned comic reader can’t help but feel for the young hero on his own personal journey. Highest possible recommendation at the local comic shops this week.

PHANTOM ROAD #2

Dom’s life turns upside down on a fateful route one night. Being a truck driver, Dom has seen his fair share of odd things on the highways but nothing could prepare him for what this haul was dealing with. After helping a couple after a fatal car crash, Dom tries helping Beverly aka Birdie with what’s happened. A mysterious object appears to have caused the accident. When Dom approaches it, a green flash ensues and the pair is transported away to a new world. Once they arrive there, faceless beings are coming for the object. Dom and Birdie fight their way out of the situation, protecting the object and trying to piece together what’s happened!

As this issue opens up, Dom and Birdie are traveling down the highway still processing what has happened. The conversation centers around what Birdie and her fiancée were doing on the road and where are they now. As they drive, they see more faceless figures standing around a familiar truck-stop. The pair pulls over and go to investigate. The area is vacant with mindless beings just standing around. As the pair goes inside, they don’t see anything. However, Birdie takes one look out the window and sees a frightening sight: it’s the world they know! As she runs outside, the vacant space returns…..

As they go back inside, Dom and Birdie are not prepared for what they find. There’s an enigmatic individual sitting in a booth. What answers does this person have for the pair? Can he explain where they are? Readers get some insight to what’s going on but as the story progresses, Dom and Birdie find themselves enwrapped into another situation that they can’t explain. The final image of this issue proves without a shadow of a doubt that the story has only just started to hit the gas!

PHANTOM ROAD #2

BREAKDOWN: Lemire keeps readers on the edge with what is turning out to be one hell of a story. Lemire takes the two leads into uncharted territory and their banter definitely reflects that. Neither knows what to expect and there is trepidation in their words. Dom is trying to assess everything while Birdie is desperate in finding anything the resembles the way things were. The conversation between the pair and the figure at the diner gives some clarity onto what’s happening but still keeps the aura of wonder very vivid. The pacing moves at a swift rate but the final act throws a great curve into an already puzzling story. The closing moments bring up feeling of “what just happened” and readers won’t be able to help themselves but become further invested in what’s going on here.

PHANTOM ROAD #2

Walta crafts a gritty and dark tone throughout this issue. The scenes at the rest stop feel cold and distant. Bellaire on the coloring helps to amplify those scenes. Even when there’s chances of cracking the mystery, the tone never changes. The emotions shown from Dom and Birdie when they meet the stranger come across as one would expect in their situation. Fear, frustration and anxiety fill those panels. The final act sets things up for the shocking twists in the closing moments. It builds up the tension while keeping readers guessing to the surprise at the end. Excellent final parting image to send readers out with.

PHANTOM ROAD #2

Black Cloak #4 by Kelly Thompson, Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey has been giving readers much excitement as they follow Black Cloaks Phaedra Essex and Pax trying to crack the case surrounding a death involving a member of Kiros’ royal family. With recent events, the case is heating up so why wait any longer! Let’s see what’s unfolding in the latest chapter, shall we?

Black Cloak #4

Freyal III of Sidra is found dead in a seedy part of Kiros. The heir to the royal throne is one of three deaths that appear to be connected. Black Cloaks (Kiros Law Enforcement) Phaedra Essex and Pax have been assigned on the case, but their investigation has drawn a lot of unwanted attention, even resulting in attempts on Essex’s life (due to her past history with Freyal). Due to the fallout the death has caused, Kiros is on the edge of a meltdown. It has also led to a possible shift in power from Elves to Humans. Once the Kiros Three (the most influential humans on Kiros) pay Essex a visit, they send her in a direction of a new lead in solving the case.

Black Cloak #4

The cloaks make their way from “The Trees”, (a section of Kiros) to a hidden location that Freyal and Essex knew about. It is at this moment that Essex is hit with the information that the murder might have actually been a suicide, covering something else. From this fallout, Essex and Pax head back to “The Lagoon”, where two other bodies were found to dive deeper into what really happened.

This chapter opens up with Essex and Pax underwater with the mermaids who reside there as well as Sash, who is trying to guide them thru this new area of Kiros. The cloaks start hearing and seeing things that are not there. Sash has to break them out of their trances, warning that the sounds and sights they see are not real. Sash pleads with Sabri to help Essex and Pax but she is none too pleased the pair is searching. With a sonic scream, the pair is broken from their trance. With a last ditch plea, Sabri reveals who dumped the body filled with poison into the Lagoon. Both Essex and Pax are not happy with that result.

Black Cloak #4

Piecing together the information they recovered, Essex and Pax try coming up with a plan to expose the guilty party. However, fate doesn’t seem to be on their side as a move is made to silence their actions. While laying low, Essex dives into her past and reveals some secrets that have been looming around her since the beginning. Readers’ patience in waiting will be rewarded with an eye-opening disclosure to one of the biggest plot threads of the series thus far! From this stage, drastic times call for drastic actions as Essex and Pax’s investigation leads them down a path that won’t be expected to conclude this excellent issue on.

Black Cloak #4

Creative: Kelly Thompson, Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey

BREAKDOWN: Thompson delivers an impactful reveal to the readers that was well worth the wait. Essex’s connection to the case has been the biggest driving factor behind her motivations. Getting clarification about that moment of time gives a whole new perspective about what is unfolding now. Readers can easily connect with that moment and empathize with what is transpiring. The before and after this sequence stands out as well. Seeing the cloaks in a new environment that they’re not comfortable with made for a solid break from the “normal” placement we’ve seen previously. With their latest situation sending Essex and Pax into a new setting, Thompson never lets up on keeping the story fresh and unpredictable. There are so many moving parts to the overall picture but nothing feels forgotten or missed. Going into the conclusion, all the major points are hit to drop a moving final point to end things on here.

McClearn brings the underwater world of The Lagoon to an incredible visual experience. The coloring used in this portion of the story pops off the page, especially diving into when the mermaids were influencing the cloaks. The imagery gives that moment a distinct feel that doesn’t appear on previous trips through Kiros. The flashback sequence reveal connects and gives readers a well-placed section of story that will only amplify where things head involving Essex. In a short-term payoff, the mannerisms Essex displays in the final act become that more impactful heading into the final page. This book doesn’t miss on giving readers an exceptional trip through such a mysterious and amazing world.

Black Cloak #4

FINAL POINT: Black Cloak #4 keeps their untouchable combination of fantastic writing and exceptional artwork rolling onward with another can’t miss issue. The saga behind a royal family member’s death and the impact it has on the officer trying to solve the case continues to be a must have on New Comic Book Day. Thompson, McClarean and Carey have created something truly sensational here and there’s no reason you shouldn’t have this book in your collection.

Radiant Black #23

Nathan Burnett is a down on his luck failed writer who’s moved back to Lockport, Illinois from Los Angeles. Fate however had different plans as he (and his best friend Marshall) came across a mysterious object which granted powers. Thus the individual known as Radiant Black was born. That is only the beginning of their journey into becoming superheroes as it has taken many twists, turns, and role reversals in a short amount of time. Let’s not forget the many friends and foes they’ve met along the way including……ONE GIANT ROBOT!

It is that said robot’s appearance that has drawn the attention of Wendell aka Radiant Yellow, who is trying to advert the oncoming attack he has seen visions of. Last readers saw Nathan, he was heading back to LA to handle some unfinished business and was forced to confront an even greater foe….a man known as BRAYDEN, who has earned the title of most unlikeable character in the Massiveverse and it’s not even close. Seriously, he’s the worst. Factor in that the power Radiant has not been working properly and the pair has their work cut out for them.

As this issue picks up, Wendell is in Lockport working on trying to communicate with the large robot head recovered after the ONE GIANT ROBOT fight. After bringing it back online, Wendell starts digging in for information but appears to get more than he bargained for with one statement. Meanwhile, Nathan (with Radiant Mask on) has a “business” meeting with the members of Circle Guy News, who handle the wholesale and merch accounts of “Radiant Black” since Marshall took over the mantle when Nathan was in a coma. The guys are talking about being paid and try leveraging Marshall’s identity as Radiant Black until they see Marshall walk by. Once their bargaining chip fades away, Nathan concludes the meeting with ideas of finding the right percentage to make everyone happy.

Returning home from the meeting, the guys walk into the garage and find Wendell’s powers going crazy while the robot head has been dissected! Making the save, Nathan catches a defeated Wendell, who can only utter “I…was…..wrong….” Wendell reveals that the giant robot was only a scout, and nowhere near the first attack. Readers also find out he miscalculated the robot sending a signal out. The optimism of averting war failed. Their only chance now is time….and time runs out! The invasion comes right to their front door!

How do the heroes fare when the battle has literally walked right inside? Is there a chance for survival? At this stage, the story speeds into action with a HUGE moment that readers will not believe when they see it! Some may even say it’s Game-Changing! Will it be enough to turn the tables? Readers find out quickly how dire things have become in such a short amount of moments. In desperate times, tough choices are made. This is the case here as a decision is made that will have major repercussions to close this excellent issue out with. There is no doubt now. The road to the Catalyst War has arrived!

BREAKDOWN: Higgins sets events in motion that readers need to brace for. The beginning of the book is the calm before the storm featuring the “Circle Guy News” team (and for more on them, check out the Invincible! Podcast). One of this series’ charms is seeing Marshall and Nathan try filling in for the other with characters they haven’t met. The moment is a fun one here and elevates the more serious tone the issue swings in following. That said, seeing Wendell defeated and broken was a powerful sequence illustrating the one shot they had to avert war just slipped thru their fingers. Wendell has always been a fantastic character whenever he’s shown up in the series (see #18), but how he reacts to a crisis of this level jumps out at readers and translates how dangerous things have become. Nathan and Marshall don’t even have a chance to fully process what’s unfolding around them but that never waivers both of their heroic spirits. Readers see how they rise to the occasion and throw caution to the win. In times like these, they both make decisions that translate to the readers why fate chose them to be heroes. The final moments of this book exemplify that and close out events with one hell of an exclamation point!

Ferigato brings the action to this chapter and sets an accelerated pace once the action starts. Prior to that, there are quite a few notable images that fans will be raving abound. The first is the double page spread where Nathan and Marshall find Wendell cracking the robot head code for information. Seeing Wendell’s powers used in this manner gave it a chaotic and desperate feel which has followed Wendell since he caught wind with what was coming. It’s equally matched when he’s saved by Nathan and appears broken, being only able to muster “I..was…wrong.” This becomes the match that lights the action for the majority of the rest of the issue The battle panels are non-stop intense. From the double full-page lead-in to a full page moment with a very cool event thrown in that readers will be excited to see, Ferigato (along with Angulo and Costa) deliver excellent action scene after scene. Once arriving at the final act, readers get a second to catch their breaths before the choice is made to send this issue into a close with much to look forward to next time.

FINAL POINT: Radiant Black #23 defines what makes this series (and the Massive-Verse as a whole) Comics’ most exciting line. Combining heart-stopping action, game-changing events and character-driven moments, Higgins, Ferigato present readers a small sample of things to come with the looming “Catalyst War” speeding forward. Readers simply can’t miss this issue on New Comic Book Day!

RADIANT PINK #4 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we are at the pen-ultimate issue of a featured character from comic’s most exciting line of books: The Massive-Verse from Image Comics (via Black Market Narrative). RADIANT PINK #4 by MEGHAN CAMARENA, MELISSA FLORES, EMMA KUBERT, REBECCA NALTY, & BECCA CAREY showcases the pair of worlds travelers striving to find a way home with more odds stacked against them. Let’s take a closer look and see what is unfolding now, Shall we?

RADIANT PINK #4

Eva aka the streamer known as “Evaplayss” aka the teleporting Radiant Pink has been going overtime in her heroic duties to the point of scary burnout. During a charity appearance at a hospital, an explosion occurs drawing Eva into action. When trying to save an EMT named Kelly, her powers go haywire. This miscue lands the pair into a distant world and very far from home!

As the pair attempts to get back home, they wind up entering different worlds full of mystery. All the while, it appears as a budding romance is forming between Eva and Kelly. The pair land in another world and find a cat spaceship which its’ lone gigantic cat protector names Kitty Kitty injures Eva. On top of all this, Eva discovers Kelly is wearing a special vest draining her powers!

The pair call a temporary truce for their issues after an argument and form a conversation with Kitty. Its’ explained that Kitty is trying to get back to Katneep IV. With creatures destroying the ship, the trio make an escape through a pod but appear to be in even more danger with a giant hand reaching for the ship!

This issue opens up with a return to Whiting, Indiana where Eva resides. Her best friend Maddie and Eva’s grandmother are trying to be calm during Eva’s disappearance but the fear is growing. However, Maddie comes across a call meant for Eva that might hold some promise of finding Eva.

Off world, Eva and Kelly appear very relaxed and recap the previous issue’s cliffhanger ending. The pair along with Kitty Kitty make the dramatic escape and land on Katneep IV. Eva and Kelly get the impression that their guests of honor but not everything is what it seems.

How does the pair adjust to life on Katneep IV? What of their blossoming romance? Who was on the phone that Maddie heard? There are many questions swirling around this issue that readers get some clarity on before heading to a mind-bending final act. Get ready for an exciting finish to this chapter but there is definitely more story to be told before this saga is said and done.

BREAKDOWN: Camarena & Flores delve into the growing romance portion of the story while maintain the fun energy that has been this series’ calling card from issue one. Excellent cameo from a certain Massive-verse character to tie things back to the present world The world of Katneep IV is an entertaining break from the overall picture. It sets up two key areas of the story: Defining their feelings and a final act that readers will not be expecting. Eva has been an evolving character within this run and looks to expand on that growth with how the final pages play out.

Kubert’s art is as stellar as always. The Katneep IV moments are an enjoyable break but this issue’s key panels break down the heavy emotions of the characters. Maddie and Eva’s grandmother’s pain about not knowing where Eva will hit readers with the seriousness of her situation. The growing relationship goes thru a wide range of feeling, right into the final act. Kubert seizes the reader’s attention with how Eva reacts to those closing moments. This plays right into a noteworthy final panel that leaves the door open for where this story goes into its’ conclusion.

FINAL POINT: The latest adventure of the youngest radiant continues to shine with a final sequence of events that will definitely have readers talking. Camarena, Flores, Kubert & the team keep the winning formula intact for this issue with solid writing and energetic art. The series has been an enjoyable trip this far with sadly one stop left. Don’t miss out on this issue and series on New Comic Book Day!

LOCAL MAN #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re diving back into the world of JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK in the pages of one of Image Comics’ best new series. LOCAL MAN #2 by by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio picks up on the mystery surrounding Jack’s return home and fall from grace in the eyes of the general public. The story calls back to the early days of Image Comics and made a strong impression with its’ debut. As an old school reader who grew up on Spawn, Youngblood and Shadowhawk to name a few, the series mixes in nice homages to the past while keeping a modern feel moving forward. There is much to discuss with the latest issue, so let’s not wait any longer and dive in, shall we?

LOCAL MAN #2

The series focuses around Jack Xaver, known to the public as former Third-Gen team member Crossjack. Removed from the team, Jack returns home to Farmington disgraced and unwelcomed by the town (and even his own family). It is never a good sign when the most popular phrase in town is “F*** CROSSJACK”. Never the less, Jack tries getting used to his “new normal” but can’t escape his past. His former arch-enemy Hodag tracks him down. Jack thinks this is a trip down memory lane but Hodag is actually trying to relay a message with no avail. Hodag is arrested and taken to jail while Jack finds an old (and maybe his only) friend Inga to try making sense of everything.

Jack can’t even catch a break here when Third Gen shows up and gives him paperwork stating he violated copyright by engaging in super hero activities with Hodag. What is a super-hero supposed to do when they can’t be a super-hero? Unfortunately, there appears to be even bigger concerns on the horizon as Hodag is brutally murdered inside his holding cell.

This issue opens up with the police arriving to bring Jack in for questioning involving Hodag’s death. Jack is very puzzled to what’s going on but seeing the pictures of Hodag brings a bit of shock to the fallen hero. Chief Bucholz begins questioning Jack, but the alibi given is not going to make the Chief happy. Jack states that he was with Inga (The Chief’s wife) during the time of Hodag’s death. Jack is released but not without some parting shots from both, which readers will have much enjoyment with.

Returning home, Jack finds more than his disappointed father waiting for him. Third-Gen has a watchful drone informing him that he broke copyright again by “helping” the police with Hodag’s death investigation". Jack gets wise to his drone problem and makes a deal with it to monitor him while he takes his dog for a walk. That walk leads him to the doorstep of Hodag’s mother!

How does that conversation go down? Is Jack ready for what lies ahead? Better yet, are the readers? The talk may throw some readers for a loop but at this stage, anything not “F*** CROSSJACK” for Jack is a win. Post-conversation, the final act steers plans into a new direction heading the story onward. Excellent flip-book companion portion to give some noteworthy elements to the overall story.

BREAKDOWN: Fleecs & Seeley continue to slowly peel layers back into the mystery behind Jack’s firing from Third-Gen. The banter between Jack and Officer Buckolz was a fun play as it established both characters while setting up for more in the future. The strongest portion of this issue falls at the conversation between Jack and Hodag’s mother. It will surprise some readers but its’ message is very straight-forward. . Its’ a well-timed pace changer that has a bigger after effect than anyone can fathom. The small nods to Image’s past (such as the TV shows page ala early Spawn), were noteworthy as there is much more to Jack than readers might be ready to find out. The flip-book portion serves its’ purpose giving more insight onto what really happened in the past. This will pay off big when readers get the huge reveal about Jack building within the series.

The art perfectly captures Jack’s tiredness of the post-superhero life. Readers bare witness to the dread of Jack dealing with the fallout from Hodag’s death. Excellent panel shot of the “welcome to Farmington” Third-Gen weathered image as Jack looks up to see himself in the past. The conversation with Hodag’s mother delivers on the emotional impact they both share with his loss. The facial expressions show the grief and anger she feels, countered by Jack realizing what this moment represents not only to her, but himself as well. Great final panel to send readers off with until their next trip into Farmington. The retro feel of the flip book adds a solid compliment to the more grounded tone of the current state of Jack’s life.

FINAL POINT: Local Man #2 follows up on its’ impressive debut with an issue grounded in the mystery of Jack Xaver’s post-heroic woes. Fleecs, Seeley and the team take readers along for the ride with solid art and writing questioning whether Jack can handle the weight of his “new normal” or buckle at its’ pressure. The story is kicking into another gear and it is one not to miss at the local comic shops this week!

INFERNO GIRL RED: BOOK ONE #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re at the conclusion of a break-out series from comics most exciting line: The Massive-Verse from Image Comics via Black Market Narrative. INFERNO GIRL RED: BOOK ONE #3 by MAT GROOM (Power Rangers, Ultraman), ERICA D’URSO (The Mighty Valkyries), IGOR MONTI & BECCA CAREY brings to comic shops the conclusion of the introductory story of Cassia Costa. Breaking down the Kickstarter volume into three issues has been no easy task but the series has been winning over fans month after month since its’ initial release via Image. Last time readers saw Cassia, Apex City is still reeling from the attack of the Griffin while Cassia has one of her biggest fears unfold right before her eyes. How do things fare in this final installment of Book One? Let’s take a closer look and see how the latest series of the Massive-verse concludes its’ spectacular debut, shall we?

INFERNO GIRL RED: BOOK ONE #3

Going away to school was expected to be a life-changing event, but even Cassia Costa didn’t expect how fast things would change when she arrived at the Helix Campus. Being a new student at the prestigious school in Apex City carries enough weight, but becoming the surprising beacon of hope and the only line of defense against the Griffin might be too much to bare.

When danger struck as the Griffin caused the entire foundation of Apex City to rise, fate found Cassia in the form of a red object that activitied her fire inside becoming the hero INFERNO GIRL RED! With the assistance of her mother, Ana and her roommate Harriette, Cassia has faced down the Griffin’s forces until a showdown between them proved too much for Cassia to handle. Rebounding from the encounter, Cassia is lured out to face the threat while the Griffin kidnaps her mother, leaving Cassia is a state of sheer defeat.

This issue opens up with Harriette returning to their dorm room and seeing Cassia crying over the disappearance of her mother. Cassia opens up to Harriette about how her mother was on to the Griffin’s ways and she was disgraced to the point Cassia’s father left them both. Feeling truly alone, Harriette provides comfort and confidence standing by Cassia’s side during this time of need and reminding her what truly makes her a hero. The conversation results in Cassia revealing her superhero identity, which Harriette already deciphered.

The pair then discuss plans to stop the Griffin once and for all. With an assist from a fellow student, they find a location where a tremendous amount of power is being used. Cassia prepares to head to the location, ready to overcome the odds and be the hope that Apex City needs in this time of crisis.

At this stage, The Griffin addresses Cassia’s mother and his identity is revealed to the readers. Once Cassia arrives, the final showdown begins! Readers are ringside for a battle of the ages as Cassia goes toe-to-toe with an adversary who Cassia has no choice but to defeat with the lives of her mother and residents of Apex City hanging in the balance.

The conclusion doesn’t leave both combatants unscathed. It leaves readers filled with ranging emotions. Once the battle has passed, the final moments offer a satisfying conclusion to the inaugural chapter of the Massive-Verse’s latest hero.

BREAKDOWN: Groom leaves readers with an exciting ending to Cassia’s first solo story. At the core of this tale has been the concept of hope. It truly is Cassia’s super power. Once she believes that she can accomplish the impossible, Cassia proves that powers never made her a hero in the first place. Groom showcases Cassia as a determined character who faces her fears and doubts head-on. This portion of the story shows her growth in believing as she needs to find the fire inside her to push forward with the absence of her mother as her normal guide. This becomes even more apparent with the showdown with the Griffin. Having been previously defeated, Cassia needs to push herself beyond her fears know what failure could mean. The resolution of the battle magnifies how important it was to win and sends off Cassia’s world with a compelling good-bye (for now…)

D’Urso’s art amplifies the intensity of the final battle to incredible levels. The action panels hold readers’ attention and never lets go with its non-stop pacing. This has been a staple of this book since its’ inception. D’Urso brings a vibrant energy to the series which reflects the optimism and hope Cassia has (with much praise going to Monti & Carey to amplify these panels). D’Urso also brings out the deeply emotional elements of Cassia’s world. The moments she shares with her mother and Harriette show readers the power of self-belief can overcome insurmountable odds.

FINAL POINT: Groom, D’Urso and the team have not only made a highly enjoyable superhero story, Through their work, they’ve reminded comic readers what makes a hero isn’t the powers they have, but the fire inside that gives them the courageous drive to be heroic. The series is a must-add to your collection and you can’t leave the local comic shops this week without a copy.

BLACK CLOAK #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the mystery grows deeper for Detective Phaedra Essex in the pages of Image Comics’ new hit series. Black Cloak by Kelly Thompson, Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey has been an excellent read thus far combing elements of true crime and fantasy. It immediately went back to print due to overwhelming fan support. The layers behind the death of the heir apparent to the throne of Kiros have slowly started their reveal. After last issue’s conclusion, tensions are running high, putting the city on edge. Let’s see where the latest chapter takes us, shall we?

Black Cloak #3

The mystery surrounding Black Cloak centers around the death of Freyal III of Sidra. He was found dead inside an apartment in a questionable part of Kiros known as the Narrows. Being part of Kiros’s Elf royal family, this death has garnered wide-spread attention. If that wasn’t enough, there are two other deaths possibly connected to this case. Now tasked to solve this case are Black Cloaks (Kiros Law Enforcement) Phaedra Essex and Pax. Their journey to solve this case and keep Kiros (the last city in the known world) from the brink of chaos has been challenging to say the least. Factor in Phaedra’s personal connection to Freyal and things have become dangerous. From interviewing potential suspects to meeting with the Queen herself, Phaedra has become a target. There have been multiple attempts to kill Phaedra but that hasn’t slowed her and Pax down from trying to solve the case.

Last we saw Phaedra, she returned to her apartment with the Kiros Three waiting for her. They are considered the most powerful Humans in Kiros. Knowing that Freyal’s death now could cause an enormous power shift from Elves to Humans, Phaedra’s guard is up for their true motives. They give Phaedra a possible break in the case which sends her rushing out to meet up with Pax on figuring out their next move with the new information.

his issue kicks off with Phaedra making her way through “The Trees”, a section of Kiros. The residents all cower away seeing a Black Cloak wandering the streets. She makes her way to meet Pax at a local establishment to form their plans. Phaedra talks about a place where Freyal might have left a message. Pax begins pleading with Phaedra to open up about what she knows since she has been keeping things from him. When Phaedra finally mentions a few clues, Pax is shocked to hear who gave the latest lead, realizing what that could mean. Pax and Phaedra discuss the Kiros Three’s plea of innocence and how they’re shifting blame to the Dracona, whose unique blades have been used in attacks on Phaedra.

The pair take off to check out a hidden location of Phaedra and Freyal’s past. What they find there is a message left that no one will be suspecting. What is left at the magical hiding spot? How is the case impacted moving forward? Readers witness how this sequence sends the pair into the path of someone whose words impact Phaedra to gamble on the future of the case heading into the issue’s final moments.

Black Cloak #3

BREAKDOWN: Thompson presents a strong pull on Phaedra’s relationships in this issue. The first time involves the distance Pax notices in revolving around the case. It plays in presenting how distracted Phaedra might be with her heavily emotional tie to Freyal. The second and arguably biggest one is her reaction to what she finds in the magical hiding spot. Thompson crafts that sequence where it doesn’t only impact Phaedra but leaves readers with a somber reaction. The final one is the latest person of interest. The conversation becomes a driver for the next stage in the case but gives perspective that the world of Krios isn’t as cut and dry as it seems. All three of these sequences tie together brilliantly to move the story forward.

McClaren and Carey bring the fantasy world to life with vivid imagery. The initial opening pages showcases the various residents of the Trees and gives this section of Kiros its’ on unqiue feel. It’s a strength to the art team on giving each area a distinct energy which plays perfectly off the writing. The back and forth between Phaedra and Pax demonstrates the partner’s longtime connection while featuring how this case is ultimately wearing on them. The best example is after they hear what’s left for them at the hiding spot. Phaedra and Pax don’t hide their feeling in a brief panel, but one that stands out for their facial reactions. The final moments are capped off by an excellent one page ending panel to take readers on the next stage of the mystery.

FINAL POINT: Black Cloak continues to push forward with its’ detailed fantasy mystery that needs to be a main-stay on all comic readers pull lists. Thompson, McClaren and Carry shift focus onto Phaedra Essex’s mounting challenges with superb writing and imagery. Don’t miss this latest chapter when you’re at the local comic shop this week!
