*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With the world put in an endless slumber, Insomnia has unleashed an evil in the DC Universe unlike anything else witnessed. The forces of good are trapped fighting their own personal demons. Who is left standing is a trio of heroes that have the fate of the world on their shoulders.

DEADMAN (who is currently possessing Batman’s body), Wesley Dodds (the re-incarnated Golden Age Sandman) and Damian Wayne are the trio of heroes left standing (and awake) to save the day. Last issue, the group heads to the House Of Horrors for the Nightmare Stone, the key to ending this ordeal. In Deadman’s possession, things seem to be looking up but is he really in control or has Insomnia been manipulating them all along?

This issue opens up with Deadman addressing the readers eluding to the story isn’t going to have a happy ending. The trio of Heroes make their way to Arkham Tower in search of Insomnia, whose body is inside. Deadman claims the stone is telling him to steal Insomina’s power. The group heads inside, not knowing what to expect.

The building is clean and unphased by the event. As they progress, Damien is confronted by Batman, who praises what his son has done. Knowing something is off, Damian stabs him! Damian snaps back to the present and its’ revealed he is now starting to fall asleep. The trio finds Insomnia and Deadman leads the charge to end things once and for all.

What happens when he uses the stone to steal Insomnia’s powers? Readers bare witness as Deadman takes the lead with one last shot to save the day. Can he do the impossible? What happens if he fails? Williamson speeds things up to brace readers for the upcoming conclusion with this issue. The segments with Robin give a small break to the overall theme. Readers can sense Damian’s closed emotions start peeking out when Batman speaks with him. However, this story has been all about Deadman. With his venture to end this nightmares, he becomes challenged with a truth that he is not expecting. The flashback moment hear translates to the readers about another layer to Insomnia’s character. It plays strong into the set-up for the final act. With what lies ahead, fans can expect a big ending as the major players are set in place to face off.

Camuncoli, Nesi, and Wijngaard keep the chilling feel throughout this issue. The time in Arkham Tower sets up like a true horror movie. The expressions of “Batman” plays into Damian’s fears very good to progress his story. Insomnia’s body made for a strong visual to express the terrors at hand. The flashback points hit their marks as Insomnia’s motives become clearer to a degree. It’s capped off with a solid two page spread late, leading readers into the final stage of the crossover.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

Insomnia’s final play makes for an engaging issue to send readers into the upcoming finale of DC Comics’ massive crossover event. Williamson, Camuncoli, and the team give the major villain some definition to his character as the closing chapter is about to begin. Keep an eye out for this issue on New Comic Book Day!

VOID RIVALS #3 (IMAGE COMICS via SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re diving back into the Energon Universe within the pages of Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment’s latest hit! Ever since it’s debut, VOID RIVALS by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Matheus Lopes and Rus Wooton has many fans watching its every move in anticipation for the new Transformers and G.I.Joe related properties coming. Few books in recent memory have generated such an immediate impact than what has been happening here.

With two strong issues setting the pace and dropping surprise after surprise, Issue #3 is set to hit local comic shops. Let’s take a closer look at where the latest chapter takes readers now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Darak (an Agorrian) and Solila (A Zertinian) have crossed each other’s path on an unknown planet. Their alien races have been bitter enemies for years. Survival has forced them to become uneasy allies. The pair has also crossed paths with Jetfire (a Cybertronian) which delighted fans when the reveal became public.

After making a last ditch attempt to fix a ship to fly away, the pair makes an escape from the planet with secrets discovered to tell. Readers found out the backstory to the warring aliens and now know the bitter enemies must find a way to come together before they are all doomed. All roads point back to the Sacred Ring. With a final attempt, luck appears to be on their side. However, Darak and Solila’s escape leads to a bigger problem. While in space, they are hijacked by figures Transformer fans know: The SKUXXOID!

This chapter begins with the pair fighting a Skuxxoid. The action is fast paced with the pair on their heels. Dark is hit with a shot in the skirmish. Dark tried saying “Save Yourself” but Solila ignores the request. In a creative use of her weapon, she takes down Skuxxoid long enough to buy time for Darak and her to escape. Skuxxoid opts not to Perdue but rather inspect the ship he acquired.

The unlikely duo make their way through the gigantic ship with danger lurking all around. How will they figure out a way home now? What obstacles lay in their path? Readers quickly find out that there is no easy way home as the pair have to make some questionable calls on the road to return. Just when readers think they have an idea where the story is going, there’s a few twists along the way that will keep them guessing until the next chapter drops.

VOID RIVALS #3 by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Matheus Lopes and Rus Wooton (Credit: Image Comics via Skybound Entertainment - Cover: James Harren)

Kirkman keeps things interesting with the events of this issue. At its’ core, the story still is anchored around the born enemies as Dakar and Solila carry the uneasiness of their alliance. Forcing them to work together against Skuxxoid kicked things off with Solila slowly revealing her true nature. By far and away, she is the breakout character of this series. Darak (much like the readers) are slowly picking up there is more to her saga than she is letting on. The action sequences are well-timed as they push the pair to work together, breaking up Darak’s question.

The Skuxxoid resolution is a great twist and one readers shouldn’t see coming. The final act is compelling as the next phase is crucial of how it’s handled. The final moment solidifies that the true nature of this book has only just begun and that’s a massive win for readers.

De Felici and Lopes fuse the action with the drama nicely for this issue. The images of Skuxxoid fighting off the pair set a strong tone early. This is topped by their first obstacle they come across on the escape. The (near) full page panel pops off the page and heighten the events of the high stakes at hand. The art team also utilizes the body language of the pair to exemplify the struggles they’ve had returning home. The prime example is the final act. The panels build to a striking image to close events, connecting with a final image to throw everything we know thus far away.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The Energon Universe’s odd couple dives further into danger with another excellent chapter. Kirkman, De Felici and the team waste no time building the tension and turmoil to a show-stopping conclusion. Make plans to pick this issue up as the story hasn’t begun to even hit its’ next level yet!

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #18 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we’re checking out arguably THE best superhero comic on the market today. Bringing together two of the most iconic characters in all of pop culture, let alone their presences in DC comics history, can be a challenge. With Mark Waid and Dan Mora behind this book, fans have been greeted to fresh takes that reminds everyone why this pair earned the moniker of “World’s Finest”

The series has a shift in art for the next two issues but duties are in safe hands. Travis Moore steps in for Mora with Waid, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands along for the ride as Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #18 looks to take a trip back in time to where things all began for the pair. Let’s not wait any longer and see how this new story arc begins!

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #18 - Mark Waid, Travis Moore, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands (Credit: DC COMICS - cover: DAN MORA)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins in Gotham City years in the past. Commissioner Gordon leads the investigation into a heist on a showboat. The only clue they have to work with is “a riddle.” Gordon doesn’t seem to phased as he senses a certain caped crusader might be already on the job.

Meanwhile in Metropolis, The Daily Planet has taken notice of the events in Gotham. Jimmy Olsen points out the news to one Clark Kent. They break down that “the Riddler” (as called by the cops at this time) is behind the stealing. Along with the thefts, there has been some disappearances. As Clark looks at the case, there is a message left in a foreign language to humans, but not Clark. It is in KRYPTONIAN!

Superman flies to Gotham and meets up with Gordon. As they exchange information of the case, Clark references a vigilante in Gotham. Gordon mentions he has his own way to interact with the investigation, but Superman flies away catching Batman listening in.

At this stage, readers are treated to the first meeting between the World’s Finest! How does the initial interaction go? What happens when ideologies clash? What connection does the Riddle have with Superman? This issue has much to offer fans new and old as a great mystery has begun. The final panels give readers a solid parting image to hold them over until next issue.

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #18 - Mark Waid, Travis Moore, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands (Credit: DC COMICS - cover: Darick Robertson & Diego Rodriguez)

Waid captures the essence of the total opposite mannerisms that make this pair great. The “by the books” method of Superman conflicts during each encounter with Batman’s more “direct” approach to solving crime. The little variances were a treasure to read. Superman’s time in Gordon’s office is a great example. The conversation comes off more cordial and a stark contrast between Batman’s brooding.

Readers can rest assured that the dark Knight demeanor is still there (though turned down a few notches) when he and Clark meet for the first time. The story builds itself at a steady pace with each following time, the pair starts to lay the foundation for their iconic bond. Readers will be walking away very pleased at what’s happening and waiting to see what lies ahead.

Moore’s art sets up these classic images nicely throughout the issue. The Superman/Gordon encounter kicks off with a solid visual of Gordon reacting to seeing Superman flying in his office. Its’ matched when the iconic heroes finally meet for the first times (as alter-egos and in uniform) as well. Moore’s use of half-page panels for these moments hit their marks flush. Bonvillain’s coloring is a major part on how these brief visuals leave a lasting impression. There’s great action thrown in the latter half of the book with a can’t miss full page panel leading into a reveal keeping readers on the edge f their seats until the next issue drops!

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

A magnificent part of DC Comics history is brought to life with an exceptional start that all comic fans won’t want to miss. Waid, Moore and the team construct the beginnings of a legendary duo with superb writing and art. The series continues to define what superhero storytelling is all about.

HARLEY QUINN: BLACK, WHITE AND REDDER #2 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a DC Comics Series that presents one of its’ superstar characters in a different space. The “Black & White” brand is a unique format where creators can tell short stories that fit outside the normal continuity with primarily black and white coloring.

Originally, this format made it’s debut in 1996 with “Batman: Black and White”. From it’s popularity, it has grown into a creator’s playground to share stories that feature the lead in a different perspective.

Harley Quinn: Black, White and Red made its debut in 2020. Fans raved about the fresh takes on one of the most popular DCU characters. With that success, a new series made it’s debut in July 2023. Coming off the heels of a strong debut, issue #2 looks to leave a lasting impression.

Harley Quinn: Black White and Redder #2 by Kelly Thompson, Annie Wu, Clayton Cowles, Ro Stein & Ted Brandt, Andrea Shea, Ryan Parrott, Luana Vecchio, Becca Carey, and Matthew Levine delivers three great stories for readers to check out. Let’s take a closer look at what is unfolding here, shall we?

Harley Quinn: Black White and Redder #2 by Kelly Thompson, Annie Wu, Clayton Cowles, Ro Stein & Ted Brandt, Andrea Shea, Ryan Parrott, Luana Vecchio, Becca Carey, and Matthew Levine (Cover - Chris Samnee - Credit: DC Comics)

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

Due to the lengths of stories, the overview of each tale will be shorter than usual reviews.

Thompson and Wu’s story opens the issue. Zatanna has been kidnapped by Harley. She’s brought to the penthouse home shared by Quinn and Poison Ivy. After some convincing buy Ivy, Harley frees Zatanna and explains her reasoning for kidnapping. Harley wants Zatanna to use her powers to give her a new origin.

Next up is Brandt & Steins turn. At Gotham’s Pet Club annual show, The League of Super-Pets are being awarded with a prestigious honor. Representing them is Robin. However, someone disputes their claim to the award. Harley arrives with her hyenas along with…THE LEGION OF DOOMINALS! The competition is on for who is the best in show amongst DC’s super-powered animals!

Closing this issue out is Parrott and Vecchio. Jim Gordon and Harley are sitting in a diner. The place has been wrecked. Harley is in handcuffs. Gordon is letting her have some pie and a discussion is sparked that readers will not want to miss.

Harley Quinn: Black White and Redder #2 by Kelly Thompson, Annie Wu, Clayton Cowles, Ro Stein & Ted Brandt, Andrea Shea, Ryan Parrott, Luana Vecchio, Becca Carey, and Matthew Levine (Cover - Joëlle Jones - Credit: DC Comics)

Each story stands on its’ own and exemplifies why this series is such a hit with fans and creators equally.

Thompson and Wu’s tale is one that plays into a factor which has followed Harley no matter where she goes. The sense of identity crisis is a major factor in Harley’s daily life. Thompson poses this theme with an entertaining backdrop. The various origin stories are brought to life with Wu’s fantastic art. There are two full page “transformation sequences that make an impact of how things begin in Harley’s quest for self-independence. The ending leaves readers with a fitting ending that is 100% all Harley. Seeing Thompson’s take here should get fans more excited for the new Birds Of Prey series coming in the fall. FINAL POINT: 9

Brandt and Stein dive into the more over-the-top side of Harley’s world with their take. The setting is centered around fun with the pets stealing the spotlight. Having the “friendly competition” go off the path is everything readers want and expect when Harley’s leading the charge. The art is excellent and pair with great moments like stolen bank accounts and a rescue gone awry. There’s a great near-full page shot of all hell breaking loose that is a crowd-pleaser. Great closing moment to cap things off. FINAL POINT: 8

The story with Parrott and Vecchio might be the show-stealer for this issue. Parrott gives readers an in-depth moment between the uneasy acquaintances. What would normally be an open and shut case turns into a odyssey into what’s the motives on why Harley and Gordon do what they do. Parrott touches upon Harley’s psychology background in a stand-out moment that brings a new look to the image of Commissioner Gordon. Vecchio’s art captures the reactions and emotions of the conversation perfectly. The panels are very grounded in their reflections but pay off huge when readers arrive at the conclusion. FINAL POINT: 10

Harley Quinn: Black White and Redder #2 by Kelly Thompson, Annie Wu, Clayton Cowles, Ro Stein & Ted Brandt, Andrea Shea, Ryan Parrott, Luana Vecchio, Becca Carey, and Matthew Levine (Cover - Annie Wu - Credit: DC Comics)

OVERALL ISSUE FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The world of DC’s Miscreant of Mayhem is spotlighted with three incredible stories that will not escape readers after reading. Each one dives into a differing element of what makes Harley Quinn such a fascinating character. This issue needs to be added into your comic collection on New Comic Book Day without question.

HORUS IN HELL #1 (SOURCE POINT PRESS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we are checking out the phenomenon that took Kickstarter by storm just a few weeks ago. The team behind the smash indie hit Pocus Hocus has spun off one of its most popular characters into his own series. With Pocus now hitting the comic shops later this year, the little universe being built here has fans excited to see what is coming next.

HORUS IN HELL #1 BY Allen Dunford and Will Radford (Pocus Hocus, Grandma Chainsaw), Kit Wallis (Good Boy), AND Letters by Dave Lentz swings for the fences with its’ explosive debut. Let’s take a closer look and see how events unfold from here, shall we?

POCUS HOCUS #1 - FOC AUGUST 13TH - ORDER NOW

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins as a normal night on the job with Pocus Hocus doing what he does best. Powered by the strength of “beverages”, Pocus does a trick pulling Horus out of his ear. With the crowd raving in applause, someone is not happy with the current situation. That is Horus.

Readers are taken on a flashback to Horus’ time in Hell’s army. As a respected warrior, Horus’ reputation spoke volumes in the battle between Angels and Demons. The action is not for the squeamish as Horus takes down his enemies in ruthless fashion.

During one of these battles, Horus is on the losing end to a powerful angel. Fearing the end is here, Horus braces to certain doom. However “Demonic” intervention happens in his eyes as a fist crushes the angel. Thinking this is a sign from below(?), Horus embraces the save. Quickly, his dreams are crushed as he sees who’s hand made the save. Horus becomes part of the act as Pocus Hocus pulls him from his magic hat to an audience.

After a random show later, Emily (Pocus’s assistant) has Horus promise he will look after Pocus. He agrees, but little does he realize what he’s in for.

What kind of trouble does Pocus get everyone in this time? Can Horus rise to the challenge at hand? And if he does, is Horus ready for the next chapter in his story to be told? Readers bare witness to Horus doing what he does best: Mayhem and Malice.

However, this time, it appears Horus has bitten off more than he can choose as the closing arc sets him on an unforeseen direction which can only lead to more of what fans crave when they see the rampaging rabbit on the loose!

HORUS IN HELL #1 BY Allen Dunford and Will Radford (Pocus Hocus, Grandma Chainsaw), Kit Wallis (Good Boy), AND Letters by Dave lentz - Credit: Source Point Press

Dunford and Radford strike again with their one-two combination of dark humor and destruction. On the surface, Horus looks the part of Pocus’ sidekick. Once this story gets rolling, readers quickly pick up on how there is more layers to this character than a magic prop. The backstory of his days in Hell instantly build a foundation of how vastly wrong fans might be about Horus.

Seeing his past and ruthlessness in combat easily wins over readers. Once the middle act begins, it is business as usual with Horus. There’s a great sequence where Horus is called a “bunny” which sparks a berzerker rage like Wolverine in him. It is playful moments like this which balance out the wild action.

The final act throws a new factor into the mix which is sure to add more heat to the drama. The story moves briskly but at a speed that you can sense how Horus is ready for what lies ahead and whoever is in his way is not ready.

Wallis is the perfect artist for this story. His style is tailor made for this book. The action scenes pay off as brutal as a fight between Heaven and Hell’s warriors would. There is an excellent full page image of Horus standing in the middle of the page while the fighting is happening in small panels around him. The facial expressions made hit a home run as most rely solely on how readers can watch Horus’ eyes as events unfold. This all leads to a strong final full page image knowing what happens next is going to a one hell of a sight to be seen.

HORUS IN HELL #1 BY Allen Dunford and Will Radford (Pocus Hocus, Grandma Chainsaw), Kit Wallis (Good Boy), AND Letters by Dave lentz - Credit: Source Point Press

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The spin-off title from Pocus Hocus does not mis-step bringing one of its’ most beloved characters into the spotlight. Radford, Dunford, Wallis and Lentz brings Horus “road back to Hell with good intentions” as they combine the brutality with brilliant banter to make for an undeniable debut.

Make sure to check this out (and also pre-order Pocus Hocus) if you’re looking for the next big thing in indie comics to be added to your collection.

SUPERMAN ANNUAL 2023 #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, there is a newfound excitement happening at DC Comics with its “Dawn Of DC” movement. Arguably no character has reaped the benefits of this more than Superman. With books like Adventures Of Superman: Jon Kent and Steelworks making waves at the comic shops, fans have been praising the line featuring characters from the Man of Steel’s world.

This is especially noticeable in the brand new Superman series by Joshua Williamson and Jamal Campbell. The battle for Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow within those pages has been a fantastic read thus far.

SUPERMAN ANNUAL 2023 #1 by Joshua Williamson, Mahmud Asrar, Edwin Galmon, Caitlin Yarsky, Max Raynor, Jack Herbert, Dave McCaig, Alex Guimarães and Ariana Maher takes a further look at the new world of Metropolis and where things are heading for the DC Universe’s franchise character. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening now, shall we?

SUPERMAN ANNUAL 2023 #1 - Joshua Williamson, Mahmud Asrar, Edwin Galmon, Caitlin Yarsky, Max Raynor, Jack Herbert, Dave McCaig, Alex Guimarães and Ariana Maher (Credit: DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

During this current run, the stat quo between Superman and his greatest enemy has changed dramatically. While Lex Luthor is incarcerated, Superman is still keeping tabs on him via super-hearing. That siad, he’s not ready for what Lex’s big move becomes! Lex has turned over Lexcorp to Superman! Now with an uneasy partnership formed and a rebranded “Supercorp” at their disposal, the pair have been thrown head first into a bigger threat from Lex’s past: Dr. Pharm and Mr. Graft!

Pharm and Graft have been using a Kyrptonite Klaw to make walking weapons out of some of Superman’s biggest rogues. With Lex’s help, Supes has been able to fend off attacks from Parasite and Silver Banshee. The latter damaged his super-hearing in their encounter so badly, Superman can’t hear Lex’s cries for help in an attempt on Lex’s life.

When this annual picks up is another side story happening involving the Daily Planet (the longtime newspaper of Metropolis). Perry White, the Planet’s Editor-In-Chief, has taken a sabbatical. Lois Lane is now acting EIC.

While Superman is fighting Toyman, Lois is writing an article piece on the latest of Metropolis’ events. As it has been coined, the “City Of Tomorrow” is now the “City Of Secrets”.

Addressing the Planet staff writers, Lois is not happy hearing the pitches she is given for the paper. Lois breaks them out of their normal habits and assigns them to cover something completely new.

Where is Superman during all this? Does Lois’s challenge go over well? And what about Lex? Readers sit back and see how the reporters fare with being outside their comfort zones. Catching a glimpse of how things fare after the initial arc sets up events with big implications down the road. The final act will have huge reveals and surprises that will shake up things in a manner readers won’t see coming. Brace for a final image that will be one fans will be talking about with much excitement as this story concludes.

SUPERMAN ANNUAL 2023 #1 - Joshua Williamson, Mahmud Asrar, Edwin Galmon, Caitlin Yarsky, Max Raynor, Jack Herbert, Dave McCaig, Alex Guimarães and Ariana Maher (Cover Artist: Chris Samnee)

Breakdown: Williamson crafts a great breakpoint in between story arcs with a creative twist for the annual. Taking the reporters out of their comfort zones made for some entertaining interactions. The Jimmy Olsen/Lisa Lombard/Supercorp story was a fun segment considering Olsen’s recent events. The strongest reporting piece will be Cat Grant and Marilyn Moonlight. The panels are brief but knowing Cat’s history involving Toyman, readers can feel the pain of Cat’s words when she lets her guard down for the brief moment.

Williamson does balance in a bit of super-heroics in with the reporting commencing. The Toyman story is brief but continues the overall story of Dr. Pharm and Mr. Graft without taking anything away from Lois’s gauntlet challenge to the Planet staff. The closing moments bring the issue to a finish with some very shocking moments. Like previously mentioned, Williamson is giving fans much to talk about with each issue elevating the Man Of Steel to new heights.

Giving each reporter their own art team for their stories gave a fresh approach to the story. Readers can sense that each team presents their arcs in varying ways to reflect the difference in reporters views. Asrar sets up a strong two-page full piece depicting Superman doing what he does best. The Jimmy Olsen portion had more of a brighter feel to the visuals. In comparison, Cat Grant’ had a gritter and more serious tone to it. The final moments conclude with an equally excellent two-page spread before ending with an image fans will be raving about. There is much to praise with the artwork featured in this special edition.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

Taking the spotlight away from the Man of Steel and placing it on the Daily Planet team proved for an enjoyable read. Williamson and the teams present a grounded story recapping previous stories while setting the foundation for another go-around that simply can’t be missed. Make sure you pick this up on New Comic Book Day!

ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN: JON KENT #6 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are diving into the Dawn Of DC with one of their best titles. If anyone hasn’t checked out the SUPERMAN line lately, you are missing out on some of the best work in comics. Every book on the line has been hitting the high marks. This week’s entry hasn’t misfired with its’ current story arc. It also doesn’t hurt having one of comics best writers steering the ship either.

ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN: JON KENT #6 by TOM TAYLOR, CLAYTON HENRY, JORDIE BELLAIRE and WES ABBOTT present the conclusion of “The Injustice Saga”. Let’s waste no more time and jump right into the story finale, shall we?

ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN: JON KENT #6 by TOM TAYLOR, CLAYTON HENRY, JORDIE BELLAIRE and WES ABBOTT (Credit: DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In this story, Jon Kent has to confront a threat that has inflicted a deep personal wound on him: Ultraman. after stealing years of his childhood away by imprisoning him, Jon has to stop him on the evil mission of killing Clark Kent’s throughout the Multi-verse. Val Zod and Red Tornado (Lois Lane) from earth 2 are accompaning him on this mission. Once the group tracks Ultraman down on another planet, they head to attack with a Phantom Zone Imprison device.

During their encounter, the plan backfires. Ultraman gets the upper-hand and sends Val and Lois into the Phantom Zone. Using all the power he can muster, Jon unloads an attack onto Ultraman. The blow drains him and leaves him at Ultraman’s mercy. Things look bleak until Ultraman is killed by a figure many fans know: Superman! But this is no ordinary Superman. This is the Superman of the INJUSTICE Universe!

Jon has stumbled onto the planet where Superman has taken over by force. During his time there, Jon assesses what has happened. Old friends have changed. The man he knows as Superman is not who he envisions. After tracking down Batman of this world, the picture is made clearer. However, his best friend from home, Damian Wayne, clearly isn’t his now. After putting a tracker on him, Batman’s resistance forces are discovered and captured by Superman’s Justice League.

With the declaration that Batman and Harley Quinn will be publicly executed, Jonathan now is tasked to stop the entire Justice League to save their lives. Can the young hero find a way to save the day?

This issue begins with Superman addressing the league about Jonathan. With Superman’s feeling being conflicted, now seeing the son he never had, Cyborg and Wonder Woman prepare to handle matters if needed. Meanwhile Jonathan recharges by flying from the sun with a collision course at the Hall Of Justice. Systematically, Jonathan deals with The Flash, Hawkgirl, Hal Jordan and Wonder Woman in various ways.

With one final stop, Jonathan tries to talk with Damian Wayne once more. Meanwhile, Superman checks in on a prisoner Jon knows all to well: Jay Nakamura. Blaming him for blinding Jon, Superman prepares to attack!

Readers gear up for the battle no one was expecting! Can Jonathan defeat arguably the most corrupted version of his father the muti-verse has ever seen? The battle plays out differently than most would expect. It goes heavy into how Jonathan Kent is his own Superman. The final act is one that will leave a lasting impression. Rest assured, once the final page is done, there won’t be one comic fan that isn’t counting down the days until the next chapter.

BREAKDOWN: Taylor pulls off a fantastic conclusion to a story that displays the pure essence of Superman. Jon Kent has firmly set himself apart from any comparisons to his father with how he approaches this challenge. The way he engages the Justice League from the beginning of this issue (primarily with the Flash), Taylor presents Jonathan as a hero who perfectly understands a confusing conflict. On the other side, Taylor drives home how this Superman is struggling to deal with his personal loss. Even with the looming presence of Jonathan, he feels removed from worrying about a possible conflict.

The closing arc brings together moments readers won’t easily forget. The way Taylor structures Jonathan’s approach to the battle is catching. It is unorthodox in comparison to the big brawls superhero fights typically bring. The resolution of the conflict hits the emotional strings on readers as well. Taylor serves this with heart-string pulls as the true vision of hope stands before those witnessing this story. It is a great ending to a firmly engaging story.

Henry and Bellaire construct the visuals superbly for the finale. The credits opening page is noteworthy as the panel set-up builds for the reveal of Jonathan flying into action. It’s subtle but the panels built up the tension of what is forthcoming. The art team bring to life the other DCU heroes reactions to what Superman is up to and display a wide range of differing opinions. They also waste no time featuring how unbalanced he is becoming with Jonathan’s actions.

The ending is filled with a few big, half-page panels fitting for the moments. With what has been building up for five issues comes to a strong breaking point. Each character goes into this with unaligned views. Johnathan steals some of these moments leading into the “final shot” bringing the battle to an end. As much action that has been featured, it’s the emotional mannerisms that leave readers wanting more while waiting for the next chapter to begin.

FINAL POINT: 10 OUT OF 10

Taylor, Henry and the team leave readers with an emotional conclusion as Jonathan Kent’s tenure as the Man of Tomorrow is put to its most personal test. The internal struggles take off with Taylor’s writing. It’s matched with the art team fortifying how deeply personal this conflict was. This is one story fans won’t want to miss on New Comic Book day this week!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins in Atlantis. A narrator explains for the mystique of Atlantis’ riches have brought out some unsavory characters trying to claim the resources for their own. Zubatai (The Narrator) greets the army storming the gates. She gives them a warning if they proceeed. The savages laugh it off. Zubatai responds with unleashing the King’s Guard: the half Man, half Mortal, All Killing force of nature known as Unute, the Berserker!

One man verses thousands doesn’t sound like fair odds. However, it’s not fair odds for the thousands. The violence is unleashed as Unute takes the fight to the invaders in graphic fashion. When the conflict finally ends, it is Unute as the last man standing.

As he is paraded around the city to a hero’s welcome, Unute is greeted by King Azaes, whom they share a pivotal moment with the readers. Lurking in the background is Visane, a priest who Unute sense danger around.

Later in the evening, Unute stumbles upon a robbery of highly important objects. With the preist looks as the prime suspect, unute makes his way to confront him.

Once he arrives, Unute walks into a surprise situation that leads to nothing but trouble. What dangers have been unlocked? Can Unute stop them? What will be the future of the Kingdom now? BREAKDOWN: Reeves doesn’t stray too far from the formula of previous issues of the brutal saga. If anything, this story has more moments of light-hearted dialogue than in recent memory. There is a bit of random swearing mixed in that works for some scenes but feels awkward in other stages.

Unute still connects as a troubled force of nature. Reeves scatters in more “human” elements with the flashback sequences of him filling in as a “father-Figure” to King Azaes. This plays heavy into the closing act, which ties up all loose ends before its’ conclusion. Readers who want the big action will not be let down as Reeves delivers on those larger-than-life times for a good majority of this issue. There’s absolutely nothing wrong as any long time reader of the series knows. If you want action, look no further.

Skroce steps in for art duties and spares no expense with the sheer brutality of Unute. The initial onslaught is a graphic two-page spread that readers witness limbs torn and cut off. Normally, this might be a bit much, but this fits Unute’s world to the letter. Skroce focus on the details of Unute’s regeneration as he heals up from the viciousness of battle. The gradual progression gives readers a sense of how things work concerning Unute.

They are gifted a wild scenario for the final battle. Unute’s big opponent gives the box office sense of epic once it enters the story. Even with the noticable difference in structure, the battle brings the same energy as only a BRZRKER story can. Great final one page panel to wrap things up with until we see Unute appear again.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

Unute’s return after the debut series conclusion sends the title character into a familiar realm. Reeves pens the story with a sense of action leading its way. Skroce and the team bring the vividly imaginative tale to life with unforgiving fight scenes fitting for the half-man, half god. If you’re a fan of BRZRKR, you won’t be disappointed with this issue.

Since its’ inception in 2018, it has provided legendary stories for some of the DCU’s most legendary characters. Seeing these icons in a new spotlight is always a treat and the latest line entry is no exception considering the creative team behind it.

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor by Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (Comcraft) give readers much to ponder as the Man Of Steel is challenged by his greatest adversary on a level he might not be ready for. Let’s not delay any longer and take a closer look at the end of an era?

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor by Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (Comcraft) - Credit: DC Comics

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins with Clark Kent at his desk at the Daily Planet. Before working on his latest story, Clark has a flashback to his younger days. In this vision, Clark is outside of a burning building, screaming for someone to open the metal door. That someone is Lex Luthor.

Back in the present, The byline on the computer screen reads “The Last Days Of Lex Luthor” by Clark Kent.

From here, the story switches to Bangladesh. A ship at sea is rocked by surprising rough seas. The cause of this isn’t mother Nature. It is a high-tech ship that starts to attack the city of Meghwip. The ship starts attacking the island in an attempt to sink it. Luckily, someone has shown up to save the people.

Moving faster than a speeding bullet, Superman starts keeping people away from the danger at hand. Once the crisis had been dealt with, Superman wastes no time exposing who is behind the attack: Lex Luthor!

Where this would be a “normal” meeting between the two, this encounter couldn’t be more different. Lex reveals the attack was nothing more to get Supes’s attention! Once he had it, Lex drops a bombshell: he is dying and he needs Superman’s help!

Proving to be the smartest in the room, Lex makes him an offer he can’t refuse. How does Superman respond? Will he turn down his greatest rival’s plea for help? Can he? Readers see the beginnings of Superman’s ethics placed into question as the Man of Tomorrow is haunted by his past with an uncertain future looming. Get ready for what can only be the beginnings of a classic!

BREAKDOWN: Waid crafts a conflict that proves to carry more weight than even the Man of Steel can muscle. The historic feud between Clark and Lex has stood the test of time. Seeing Lex have to swallow some pride displayed the gravity of his problems. For the man with all the answers to be left left denied was a side of Lex few have ever seen. Waid never lets his confidence be deflated during this entire issue.

The attack in Bangladesh is prime example of this. Lex’s willingness to destroy and endanger thousands for a meeting plays into his “Holier than thou” mystique. Attacking Clark at his core: Being the symbol of hope in hopelessness is one of the most dangerous blows. Seeing Superman rise to this challenge without breaking his ethics made for compelling drama. Tying in a backstory to their youth is a nice touch sending things into the next chapter.

Whenever Bryan Hitch is attached to a project, readers know to expect bold pieces of art to hit key points. The two page spread on Lex’s ship attack is an easy section readers will connect with. Brilliant classic full Superman Page which fueled this portion of the issue. Lex’s arrogance poured thru the panel’s with Hitch nailing the reactions during their one-one-one “talk”.

The flashback moments added another detail to the story. Seeing how Clark stands by Lex’s side even back then portrays to the readers how dedicated he is to being the symbol of hope. Hitch makes this story feel larger than the pages. With each detail on the areas illustrated, the feel readers will have in this issue is like cinema on the big screen. Solid closing panels tying some loose ends while engaging in the reasons why Lex hates Clark.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

Doing a mature themed Superman story is never easy. in one debut issue, Waid, Hitch and the team lay the foundation with a captivating story filled with vibrant imagery. The endless battle takes things to another level with a can’t miss issue for New Comic Book Day!

Battle Chasers #11 by Joe Madureira and LUDO LULLABI (credit: Image Comics)

BREAKDOWN: Madureira unleashes Garrison’s fury onto readers with this chapter. The majority of the issue spotlights his noble stand against the Paladins. Readers can feel his anger as he not only fights his enemies, but wrestles with the ghosts of his past. Garrison’s background has always been the key point of his character.

Madureira takes a deeper dive with a few key emotional scenes in between the action. He interweaves this very well as nothing feels wedged in to break the action panels up. Knowing how personal the fight becomes adds another dynamic to the story. Heading into the final moments, Madureira sneaks in a solid surprise to keep fans on their toes till next time. It’s a fitting mic drop moment to close out this issue.

Battle Chasers #11 by Joe Madureira and LUDO LULLABI (credit: Image Comics)

Lullabi’s art flourishes with each panel. The “quieter” moments with Monika build for a natural progression with her story. Lullabi presents Garrison as stoic in the face of danger. The mannerisms displayed reflect someone who’s ready to go out on their shield (or sword in this case). The action steals readers focus and never stops. The moments feel big and you can sense how every strike matters in the melee. There are some great full page panels in the closing act that can’t be missed. However, there are none greater than the final image to energize fans in the wait till next issue.

Joe is playing it off that he’s fine but Ken seems to be more worried. When Joe is called away to train, he promises to pick up the game later.

Later time-jumps to the present. Ken is taping his hands up before heading to his arcade. Ken has set up shop in The Row. Things seem to be a normal day, but not for long. A group of individuals arrive and make their presence known. Pressure is mounting that a takeover is looming. Can Ken survive?

Readers bare witness to how “business” is done in the Row. More secrets come to light as the dangers of Infinity City continue to grow. Tensions throw more fuel on the fast-paced action which will surely please fans. If that wasn’t enough, just wait for the closing act. The final image will set things on a strong start heading towards the endgame stretch.

BREAKDOWN: Burnett presents Ken to the readers with a new focus of character. Much of his past has been shrouded in secret prior. With this issue, it is clear to the audience that Ken has carved his own spot in Infinity City. It is a noteworthy contrast from the other characters that have been introduced in the story thus far. Burnett keeps a solid balance of drama and action with this issue. The latter half dives heavy into the combat but doesn’t lose focus on the heart of the story. The final act gives a proper build to where things are heading down the closing stretch.

ARCADE KINGS #3 by DYLAN BURNETT, Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini (Credit: Image Comics via Skybound Entertainment)

The art reflects the complexity of Ken as he navigates the challenges of The Row. The body language demonstrates Ken’s reluctance to fight back without unveiling the true reason. The actions resolves that issue with bold panels showing why Ken stands out as an important figure. Fans of this series have become accustomed to the fantastic action and there’s no letdown here. Before closing up shop, the team puts together an impactful parting act with a last visual to have readers talking with excitement until next issue.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

A key character gets the spotlight as the battle of Infinity City continues on. BURNETT, Baiamonte and Antonellini bring the emotional weight to the frenetic fighting for another knockout issue. Don’t miss picking up this series on New Comic Book Day!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

What started as a murder investigation has spiraled into something more than anyone expected. Simon Stagg, longtime business rival of Bruce Wayne, is found dead. All clues pint to Rex Mason aka METAMORPHO as the lead suspect. When the World’s Finest start digging into if a hero became a murderer, they stumble into an unexpected truth. NEWMAZO, an updated version of a Justice League rogue capable of stealing powers, has been behind this event.

While targeting billionaires and controlling some of the most brilliant minds concerning robotics in the DCU, this new threat appears to be at the door of victory. The plan of a robotic revolution is underway. Being bound by electrical collars, the duo now stands before the upgraded android and his main weapon: Ultra-Morpho. With some creativity, Batman and Green Arrow defeat the enforcer, severing the collars. With a plan in place and the impersonated billionaires (including Stagg) now free, it’s time for the good guys to fight back. How will the heroes stop him with the combined might of some of the most power beings in the world?

This issue kicks off with Batman taking the attack to Newmazo, who was in disguise as Supergirl. Tying him up in a version of the Lasso Of Truth, Newmazo is ready to end the Dark Night. Those plans are faulted when Martian Manhunter and the real Supergirl crash the party. However the advantage is short lived as Newmazo acquires their strength. Batman and Doc Magnus (from Metal Men Fame) scramble for a plan.

How can you stop something that can mimic powers on a high intellect? Readers sit back and see how one final attempt is made to stop world extinction. With an event drawing in the heaviest of hitters in the DCU, the action feels box-office as an unlikely player plays a crucial role. The resolution plays to perfection and will send readers home on a high note with another fantastic story in the books.

BREAKDOWN: Waid continues to prove why he’s one of the best writers in comics. Crafting the challenge of a villain who can match and surpass the heroes at their own game is no easy task. Seeing Batman find a solution with his detective skills is always a great joy to read. The relationship with Superman is presented with a special event feel, which after all these ears, is tough to pull off. Juggling the massive supporting cast is worked to perfection.

Being an old school DC reader, seeing the Metal men, T.O. Morrow and Metamorpho featured in a story like this is amazing. This issue and series encompasses the superhero lore without making the story feel dated. The payoffs are huge to compliment the action. The closing act ties up loose ends nicely. Pacing kept everything moving in a rising direction until the final battle. The issue is everything you want from a superhero comic: action, drama and a reminder of why superheroes are still relevant in this day and age.

Can there be a more perfect artist for this series than Dan Mora? Without question, Mora defines bringing big-scale action to the comics genre. Form the opening fight between Newmazo and Batman, Mora sets things in motion radiating of excitement. Even during the battle, Mora never lets Newmazo lose his evil smile as the action heats up. Counter-balancing that is Batman reacting to events. Leading the most powerful beings in the DCU in a losing effort, readers can connect with the dangerous fight. Seeing Batman in this state gives the feel that he can actually fail and lose.

The action never slows down as Mora architects some excellent two page spreads that are nothing but extraordinary. The final battle begins with a dramatic reveal, setting the stage for a showdown fans will be elated to see. Closing the fight is an incredible one full page panel with a character that can be the only one to end things at this stage. The closing act gives readers some fun character moments with the expressions featured. From start to finish, the issue doesn’t disappoint.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5 OUT OF 10

The best superhero book at the LCS gives readers a classic finale that needs to be witnessed. Waid’s superb writing and Mora’s stunning visuals closes off the “Tomorrow” storyline in epic fashion. This series needs to be in your collection before calling it a wrap on New Comic Book Day!

A young girl named Alice Leslie is looking at “The Spooky Boys” crime comic-book late at night. There’s a “mystery” surrounding a musician known as “Mr. Bones”. Suddenly, there’s a rumble and her father, Otis, comes home. Alice jumps out of bed to hear her parents arguing. The conversation stops when Alice knocks a lamp over.

The next day, the family tries starting the day off on a better note. However, Otis and Cindy (his wife) are clearly not on the same page. With an issue with the furnace distracting the parents, Alice misses her bus to school. Readers see that there’s a building jealousy with Alice over the youngest of the family, Vivian, who seems to always have her father’s attention. This theory is confirmed at school when Alice talks with her friends about Christmas.

In-between Otis working around the house, the words of the comic haunt Alice as she hears her father play music. When Alice questions why he stops, Otis is saved by an old friend named Lemont Boggs. Boggs is the drummer for the Baron Redmond Orchestra and has an offer for Otis to play a show. Otis tries denying the offer but Boggs won’t take no for an answer.

What is the reason behind Otis’s retirement? Alice takes more cues from her comic to start her own investigation. Readers join in on the case as Alice digs deep into the matter. The journey is filled with moments of young theories and old habits. Heading into the closing act, Otis makes a tough decision with impacts on the family. Will it be harmony for the holidays or a bad note to leave on? Readers will have no doubt with that final panel hits with a song in the air.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Clark don’t stray too far away from the foundation they have built. Otis appears as a compelling character, struggling to be what the family needs over his wants. It is evident when he plays music how much his demeanor changes. Once again, proof of how strong the power of music is when it has someone in its’ grip. Alice coming across as a young sleuth made for fun moments when tying it back to her comic.

The story challenges Otis to his core. Readers can instantly connect with his choices. At his core, the music never leaves him no matter how much he tries hiding it. It plays into some fun directions. Alice’s detective work takes some of the emotional weight off topic, but never anything to hamper the story.

Greco takes over art duties for issue #3 and jumps right into the 40’s. The visuals perfectly reflect the time. The mannerisms with Otis and Cindy translate to the audience their constant struggles. As the story progresses, it is clear to see Otis wanting to play more but feelings of guilt hold him back.

There’s an excellent run of “comic” panels where Alice is envisioning what her father’s “True” story is. The change in art stands out for a great break in the drama. The bond between Otis and Alice pops off the page with an excellent full panel page later in the book. The final visuals leave a lasting effect on the readers until the next chapter drops. There’s much to enjoy with the presentation here.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The saga of Jazz Music plays on with another great installment. Higgins, Clark, Greco, and the team orchestrate an entertaining mix of strong writing and stellar visuals to carry the music through its’ latest destination. Don’t miss this series on New Comic Book Day!

EIGHT LIMBS (HUMANOIDS)

Welcome to a brand new edition of Parlay points, the comic books review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, a new project coming out from Humanoids that brings the world of Muay Thai to the forefront. if you are unfamiliar, Muay Thai is a style of Martial Arts focused on striking an opponent. It is also known as “The Art Of Eight Limbs” due to its’ focus of eight areas of physical combat. Eight Limbs (OGN) by Stephanie Phillips, Giulia Lalli, Lee Loughridge, and AndWorld Design showcases the art along with the strength of family growing through fighting. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening here.

Eight Limbs (OGN) by Stephanie Phillips, Giulia Lalli, Lee Loughridge, and AndWorld Design (Credit: Humanoids - cover by DAN PANOSIAN)

The story begins with two teenage girls fighting outside of a school. With a crowd around, the teachers run in to stop it. They take a girl named Mari into the principal’s office. Readers quickly see this isn’t a random fight. Mari has had three in the past month. With her caseworker, Ellie, pleading her case, Mari is now expelled from school and looking for a foster home.

Meanwhile, class is in session with a trainer showing off elements of the martial art: Muay Thai. Her name is Joanna Carr. Carr is a former strawweight (115lbs) champion who is now enjoying the family life with her husband and young daughter. After the class leaves, Carr takes time to hit some pads. All the while, she’s remembering her glory days of fighting. Readers see how the fighting spirit never goes away in Carr. In the sparring session, she questions if she made the right decision to retire.

When the family returns home, Ellie is there to ask a big favor. With all other options expired, Ellie asks if Joanna would house Mari for a few days. Without a second thought, Joanna accepts. Her husband isn’t too pleased with the idea, but Joanna pleads her case. Ellie helped Joanna out over the years and she’s now paying it forward.

When Joanna tries introducing Mari to the world of Muay Thai, it seems to become a bonding experience. Readers see that things seem to be shifting in a positive direction. It becomes short lived when a miscommunication sends Mari into a dangerous path.

What reaction does Joanna have to Mari’s new direction? How can Joanna save her? Readers see Joanna fight not only for Mari’s safety but her own struggles with the past. The final act builds off the momentum of Carr’s spirit refusing to quit. Action is never a shortage in the latter half of this story. “Eight Limbs” will leave readers with a greater understanding of a fighter’s heart and what’s really worth fighting for in the end.

For anyone who doesn’t fully grasp why fighting is an emotional artform, this book will change your min. Phillips opens up with relating her own personal connection to the art. It is a very emotional insight to a fighter’s mind. This translates into the story very well. Does a fighter ever stop fighting? That is the overall theme of Carr’s story. When the last bell has rung, can she let go of the past? The parallels with Carr and Mari reflect each other to forge why Carr is so protective of Mari. Seeing herself relived thru her is an element that readers can see develop.

However, the biggest point of the story has to be the reason behind the fight. Phillips breaks down the complexity of the art and walks readers thru when it’s used. The “Behind The scenes” flashbacks of Carr’s fights drives home what readers can sense without stepping in the ring. As an avid MMA Fan, the dissection into the fighter elevates this story from being just another redemption tale. Events move briskly to get to the main event It doesn’t hamper the story and offers a solid build for the final confrontation. The ending plays into what Carr’s true motivations are and leaves readers with greater knowledge into the art.

Lalli and Loughridge create a lasting impression of Carr’s art within these pages. The breakdown of Carr’s initial teaching hits with a great seven panel page. Another key page is the full page breakdown of the Wai Kru by Carr. Both make the case for what is the reason behind the strike. The flashback sequences show off the highs and lows of the fight. The emotions pouring out of those panels are inescapable. Seeing Mari’s hesitation to Joanna’s welcoming nature balances out their overall beginnings. There is no shortage of great action panels as Mari and Joanna face their competition. They pay great respect into featuring what is involved in the combat exchanges. The art team closes the tale out with a lasting final image to explain the real reason on what is worth fighting for.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The world of Muay Thai is brought center stage in a story that reminds readers what’s truly worth fighting for. With a 1-2 combo of excellent writing from Phillips and impressive visuals from Lalli, “eight Limbs” doesn’t need a judge’s decision for being declared a winner. Keep an eye out for it on New Comic Book Day.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES/STRANGER THINGS #1 (IDW PUBLISHING/DARK HORSE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the Heroes In A Half Shells enter into a new crossover with one of pop culture’s biggest fandoms for an all-new series! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are no strangers to huge crossovers. Earlier this year, they were featured in a sequel series with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. For this adventure, Turple Power alone might not be enough to handle the threats from the Upside Down.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES/STRANGER THINGS #1 by Cameron Chittock, Fero Pe, Sofie Dodgson and Rus Wooton (Credit: IDW Publishing and Dark Horse Comics) pairs the heroes with Eleven and the gang from Hawkins, Indiana for a monumental event! Let’s take a closer look and see how things unfold, shall we?

The story begins in New York City circa 1985. Some passengers on the subway line notice a “Rat” moving along the car. Little do they know, this is no ordinary rat. One passenger puts it best: “The Whole City Is Going to Hell”. This becomes very evident with a noticeable marking underneath the seats.

Above ground, tourists flood the streets of the Big Apple. One such group is definitely far from home. Readers see the familiar faces of Mike Wheeler, Will Byers, Lucas Sinclair, Max Mayfield and Dustin Henderson sight-seeing with a class trip. When Eleven meets up with them, they find themselves seperated from their group.

Heading into the subway to catch up, the group hears a frightening but familiar sound. Miles away, it appears the supernatural followed them from Hawkins. Looking to investigate, the kids head deeper into the subway. What they find is more than they bargained for. Luckily, they get some much needed back-up from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

What could be the common cause for these two groups to cross paths? Readers find out quickly that this is no random occurrence. Events are in motion that start peeling back the layers to the suspicion. The final moments build for a surprise that will have readers locked in for next issue and the rest of the series! Get ready for an unforgettable adventure!

BREAKDOWN: Chittock balances the supernatural and super-heroics with a fine balance in this opening issue. The banter of the kids from Hawkins fits right in line with what won over millions from the hit Netflix show. Even with the big change of scenery, nothing felt out of place. Even when the kids meet up with the ‘Turtles, the reaction of the kids is priceless. The moment plays into both fandoms extremely well. Even when the final act starts ramping up, readers can easily get caught up in the story. Solid surprise ending to lock readers in for the long haul.

Pe and Dodgson bring out the best of NYC with the panels of sight-seeing. Incredible shot of the Empire State Building with the kids’ reactions in the surrounding panels. Once the action begins, the art team sets the pace early with a huge visual of what was in the subway. As great as that was, it’s topped by a two full page spread of the Turtles entering the fray. The kids’ reactions reflect the same type of moments on the show. This plays into connecting with readers about the mystery looming ahead. There’s also a great display page of Eleven using her powers that fans will be excited to see. Solid final visual to send readers into the next phase of a very entertaining saga.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

Chittock, Pe, Dodgson and the team unite the heroes of Hawkins with the legendary TMNT squad for an impressive debut issue. Fans of both franchises will discover quickly how well this pairing gels with the stellar writing and attention-grabbing visuals. The story is just beginning and you won’t want to miss this!

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED #1: THE COINLESS (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to a brand-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, It is crazy to think that the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers debuted in 1993. Since that moment, the property has expanded outside of television into a well known global entity. Their reach on pop-culture has been vast but one of the most consistent areas has been their comics line. Fans of the franchise celebrating its’ 30th anniversary have much to look forward to from BOOM! Studios in the upcoming months.

One such event is a one-shot focusing on Drakkon, the wildly-popular villain of MMPR lore. POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: THE COINLESS #1 by Adam Cesare (Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal) Moisés Hidalgo (Dark Blood), Arthur Hesli and Ed Dukeshire with the mischievous version of Tommy Oliver thrusted into uncharted territory thanks to the growing threat of Mistress Vile and Dark Spector. Let’s take a closer look at the latest events in the world of the Coinless, shall we?

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: THE COINLESS #1 by Adam Cesare (Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal) Moisés Hidalgo (Dark Blood), Arthur Hesli and Ed Dukeshire (Cover: Dan Mora - All art credit: BOOM! Studios)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In case anyone is unfamiliar with “The Coinless”, it is a universe in MMPR lore where this verison of Tommy aka The Green Ranger was a willing member of Rita Repulsa’s forces. Being renamed Lord Drakkon, Tommy (along with Rita) led a brutal and deadly battle against Zordon’s forces of good. When the smoke cleared, the Power Rangers as fans knew were no more. The Power Coins were no longer in their possession. While there still are individuals fighting the good fight, they are clearly outmatched by Drakkon.

Last readers saw Drakkon, he was lurking around Safehaven. After freeing Kiya, a fallen ranger, from her prison, the pair escape thru a morphin arch with an ominous warning to the Omega Rangers. The message was clear: Destroy The Arch after because Vile will be invincible if she gets to it.

As this issue kicks off, Tommy and Kiya have returned to the world of the Coinless. Drakkon thinks the world is as he left it. However, as the pair progress thru Angel Grove, that idea disappears quickly. The force of Dark Spector attack them! The odds to not appear to be in their favor until back-up arrives in the form of Trini and Scorpina!

The meeting isn’t exactly cordial as Drakkon is not a friend, but as the saying goes, “The Enemy of my enemy is my friend”. Kiya and Scorpina are happy to ignore that and make a play to attack Drakkon. They are stopped by a familar face: Kimberly Hart aka The Pink Ranger or Ranger Slayer” of this universe for a brief time.

Being the voice of reason, Kimberly leads the group into a hidden bunker. At this moment, Drakkon nearly starts a riot amongst the survivors while revealing his plans to fight Dark Spector. Unknowing to all, the forces of Evil are already making moves in the shadows ready to strike.

Can the plan work? Will this group become a team in the name of good? What other secrets lurk in this universe? Readers are treated to the last stand of a falling universe. There are many surprises thrown in the mix while watching this unlikely team put it all on the line while dealing with the past. The final sequence of events send readers home with much to ponder and question if & when the next time the coinless universe returns.

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED: THE COINLESS #1 by Adam Cesare (Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal) Moisés Hidalgo (Dark Blood), Arthur Hesli and Ed Dukeshire (Cover: Dan Mora - All art credit: BOOM! Studios)

BREAKDOWN: Cesare gives readers an exciting tale to which plays as a nice companion to what is happening in the regular series. Drakkon never changes from being a villain readers love to hate. The interactions he has with the survivors plays into his arrogance and corruption. Diving into much of the secrets of this universe made for a solid backdrop to the danger at hand. The landscape has drastically changed for Drakkon, which in turns makes him an uneasy ally. New readers might be lost in certain areas but can pick up quickly to the events taking place. The final moments drive home the importance of the mission, while leaving readers guessing about what the future holds.

Hidalgo is no stranger to the Power Rangers world. Being a former Rangers artist on a run with Mat Groom, Hidalgo picks right up harnessing the struggle of good vs. evil. Capturing the unhinged yet conniving deminer of Drakkon played a huge part in conveying the danger of Vile and Spector. There is never a shortage of great action sequences throughout this book. Those are equally balanced with the team’s reactions to Drakkon’s defiance in the face of defeat. Readers should enjoy seeing the pivotal panels bringing one of Kimberly’s biggest losses back to the forefront. The surprise panels hit their marks bringing hope, for however fleeting it is as the story races to its end. Hidalgo’s art reflects the dire times and bleak future ahead for the coinless superbly.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The dark times of the current Power Rangers story extends its’ grip into another universe with a thrilling adventure. Cesare, Hidalgo, and the team present an alternate time with an unlikely source of hope standing in the way of greater evil. Solid drama and fantastic action makes this a book to keep an eye out for on New Comic Book Day.

Jordan) - Credit: BOOM! Studios

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The events of this story take place a decade after the conclusion of “Creed III”. Quoting directly from the opening page: “AMARA CREED WAS BORN DEAF AND HER MOTHER, BIANCA CREED, HAS COMPLETELY LOST HER HEARING BEFORE THE EVENTS OF THIS STORY. THE CREED FAMILY USES A MIX OF BASL (BLACK AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE) AND LIPREADING TO COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER.”

The first image readers see is Amara walking to a ring, clad in a boxing robe. With her father in her corner, Amara prepares for a boxing bout. Amara is facing Rebecca Gonzalez with a record of 5-3-0. Readers see the process of how Amara breaks down the fight. Her father waives a red towel, which Amara refers to “stop messing around and utilize your jab.” Amara complies and sets up to finish the fight with a win!

After the fight, Amara, Bianca and Adonis talk about the fight. Left with conflicting views, Amara looks at the trophy case and flashes back to when she first started. Readers see that since Adonis has retired, something has changed about his behavior in Amara’s eyes.

The next day, Amara is back in the gym, training with her dad. Amara is looking for tougher competition but her dad thinks otherwise. Meanwhile, someone is in the gym not showing the respect to Amara.

When she arrives at school, her friend Mel points out that there is an underground fight meeting happening later. With her parents away on business, Amara makes plans to go. What happens when she arrives at the fight club? Readers don’t wait too long to see Amara bring the action. The fallout sends her on an unexpected course that no one will see coming. No one ever said the road to becoming a champion was easy as the final moments show this story isn’t going to the judges for decision.

BREAKDOWN: Morgan and Jamison recreate the magic of the films with a story that carries a big Hollywood feel. Amara’s journey into becoming a champion mirrors some of the same youthful confidence personas conflicting with the elder experienced trainer. The writers play heavy into Adonis’ conflict post-retirement. Trying to balance being a father to being a trainer make for some strong character moments.

The family dynamic is another big element of this issue. Seeing Bianca and Adonis try to figure out a way to let Amara find her own path (to a degree) spotlight what makes these movies so special. The characters are easily relatable and readers can't help but to root for them to win. The final moments throw a solid curve into the mix and concludes a great first issue.

Santos and Chavis come out of the gates swinging with fast paced panels. The initial fight sets a solid pace for where things head into the story. The full page “Victory” panel closes the fight and transitions smoothly into the next phase of Amara’s path. These panels are followed up well with Amara looking into the trophy case and thinking of where she’s been and where she’s going.

The close-ups of Adonis and Bianca trying to figure things out breaks form the action to give readers a better connection with the characters. The training sessions with Amara mimicking Adonis play out perfectly to show how she’s growing as a fighter and slowly breaking form his shadow. The fight club panels push forward the emotions of fighting while adding more layer to Amara’s overall character. Great final sequence of panels to mix in the surprise ending and send readers into the next round with a loud visual statement.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The next chapter in the Creed saga doesn’t lose the opening round as readers are treated to an excellent first issue. Morgan, Jamison, Santos and the entire team repackage the magic of the movies and deliver it to the comic shop with superb writing and energetic art. You won’t want to miss picking this up on New Comic Book Day.

ARCADE KINGS #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re following along one boy’s search for his brother in the pages of the brand new series from Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment. The first issue made a big splash and the follow-up looks to continue to win another round. ARCADE KINGS #2 by DYLAN BURNETT, Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini bring readers along for the journey through Infinity City as Joe pushes forward with more challenges in his way. Time to put some quarters into the game and level up for this review:

Arcade Kings #2 (Credit: Image Comics) Creative Team: Dylan Burnett, Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Years ago, Infinity City has been known as the home for fighting world champion Victor McMax! Watching in the crowd are his two sons Joe and Ken. Both boys show distinct differences about their “dad’s” line of work. Abruptly, McMax retires from fighting shortly after a title defense. From that moment on, to say things have changed is an understatement.

Fast forward to present time and Joe has emerged in Valleytown, a suburb of Infinity City. Joe has donned a helmet and has made the Round House Arcade his temporary home. However, when a stranger walks in to challenge the reigning arcade king, it turns out to be more than a game. The opponent has ties to Joe’s dad with a message to return to his side. Joe has other plans and survives the encounter. Unfortunately, winning means losing as Joe needs to leave the arcade to continue his quest: to find his brother Ken!

This issue picks up with Joe and Ken fighting as young kids in their Dad’s estate. The brothers spar with Joe getting the upper hand. This pleases their dad but Ken is belittled for not measuring up. In this mix, Victor struggles breathing. The training continues but Ken is dismissed.

Jumping to present time, Joe is on a train to Rockview, which looks to be abandoned when he steps off. Walking the streets, Joe comes across a vandalized billboard for his father’s school. All the while, Plum Khurana makes her way through the vacant streets running into a group playing a game. When she interrupts, the favor is returned by Joe, who sees Plum as another obstacle to his quest.

Readers ring the bell and see how these two “talk”. How does the conversation go? Suffice to say, their conversation has another vested party interested. Who jumps into the fray? Can Joe stay out of his dad’s reach yet again? The final act provides some answers while a move is made setting up a twist to the story heading to the next issue.

Arcade Kings #2 (Credit: Image Comics) Creative Team: Dylan Burnett, Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini

BREAKDOWN: Burnett keeps things moving with a very entertaining issue. Delving into the background of the brothers, Burnett gives some insight on what caused the rift between Joe and the family. The moment is brief but speaks volumes about the fractures with the family. Switching to present time, Joe comes across as confident as ever without showing the true emotions behind the helmet. The introduction of Plum Khurana was a great addition to the cast of characters. Being the “protector” of Rockview, Plum demonstrates strong reactions to counter and align with Joe when it becomes needed. When the third party arrives, Plum shows a change of character that gives a solid pause for Joe’s story. The moves made following the encounter is a very unique dynamic switch that is sure to keep readers on their toes.

The art flows very fast between panels. Rockview is displayed as broken and vacant. It is quite a contrast from Valleytown. Baiamonte and Antonellini (along with Simona Iurato and Sharon Marino) drive this point home when readers first see Plum wake up and head out into the street. The art team showcase her range of emotions to give her character a sense of varying levels. The action sequences recreates legendary fighting game energy with vibrant panels. Andworld Design’s lettering through these spots adds a fun look to the battles. There is an excellent image with Joe facing off against the challenger with the use of short panels to illustrate the action. It balances out the figure standing in the center of the page with a different blue coloring to make the page pop. Excellent build-up for the next chapter with a strong final panel to leave things off on.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

It’s a second round knockout with the latest chapter of Arcade Kings. Burnett ushers in the next level of Joe’s quest with an excellent story matched by the dynamic visuals which are quickly becoming this series calling card. Make sure it’s not “Game Over” at the LCS this week and get yourself this issue on New Comic Book Day.
