It is a brief moment as Adams’ pacing casts the spotlight on a few notable Lanterns. Seeing Kyle Rayner and Kilowog back in the fray is a huge win. Star Sapphire’s role is brief but effective. This ultimately leads back into the main event of the chapter.

Pacing picks up as Jordan’s fearless instincts kick in. Readers watch as big action starts to unfold. It drives home the significance of the Lanterns. Being guardians of the cosmos, Jordan understands this more than anyone. It’s fitting he leads the last charge.

Adams writes in a moment that pops off the page. Jordan’s one-liner indicates the true power of the lanterns: Will. Readers watch as the Lantern Corps takes the conflict to a whole new stage. It delivers on a satisfying resolution. Before departing, Adams leaves the audience with a parting surprise. If there was ever a time to jump into Green Lantern, it is during this run.

Xermánico and Fajardo Jr. go BIG for the visuals for this conclusion. Thaaros starts events with a full page image. This is upstaged by a show-stopping two page spread. Seeing the Lanterns in action ushers in the final stand. Varron’s entry gets the full page treatment. Kilowog gets a very unique flashback page as well. This might be enough for some books, but not this one.

The art team puts together a series of two page splashes. Thaaros and Jordan’s brawl keeps gaining moment during these impressive images. Without question, these will be a crowd pleaser. The energy and feel of these pages will lock readers in to the stunning close. One light burns out but the final panel indicates Jordan and company are not done in fighting the injustices of space.

In the last stand of OA, the Green Lanterns are not going down quietly. Adams pens a phenomenal close with the writing. Xermánico, Fajardo Jr. and Shapre present the stunning images fitting for such a devastating finale. This is one you won’t want to miss!

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #1 (DC COMICS)

When fans think of Batman, many images pop into mind. Caped Crusader. Dark Knight. One description might stand out from the rest. “World’s Greatest Detective”. Seeing the evolution of his skills has always been exciting to watch.

A new series looks to showcase the early days with a unique format. “Dark Patterns” is a 12 issue series spotlighting four very unique and grounded cases. This is a whole new look at Batman as he starts to etch his legacy.

Watters sets events in motion with a slow burn build. Walking readers through the initial start features a cold Gotham City. The writing builds off the unforgiving nature of Batman’s home. This ultimately leads into the latest victim of a a serial killer. Watters lays out the gruesome killing while giving Batman just enough clues to start investigating.

As the pace picks up, Watters adds more twists into the plot. Readers will appreciate the Alfred injections into the chapter. It is a factor sorely missed in current stories. Their conversation is classic, leading Batman into the final act. Once the killer is revealed, it spirals the case into a whole new direction. The closing page offers up a crack in the case, but leaves with much to ponder in the meantime.

Sherman and Farrell craft a haunting feel for the streets of Gotham. The opening pages are a mix of near full images tagged with small panels. Readers feel a sense of uncertainty as Batman suits up. This leads to a fantastic credits page. The full image of the Bat signal in the sky kicks off the mystery in style.

Panel structure also keys in on the distorted view of events. The split full page reveals the victim and Batman with a dramatic flair. There is no shortage of tension as pages unfold. Nothing compares to the killer’s reveal. The near full page image pops off the page. It is not one for the squeamish. Events finally start slowing down at the final page. With a simple panel, much is revealed and questioned heading into the next issue.

A horrific case welcomes readers into an exciting chapter of Batman’s past. Watters keeps readers walking the tightrope with the writing. Lemire presents a classic challenge for the Society while foreshadowing a challenging future. The mission starts out as traditional as one might think. Note: this is never a bad thing. As the Injustice Society keeps the JSA at bay, the more brooding build starts. Obsidian’s push for a proactive stance goes against the normal JSA ethic. Lemire sets it up quietly for a larger role later.

Once the attack strikes the headquarters, pacing builds very quickly. Readers watch as the good guys are on their heels. A youthful panic leads into a separation of squads. Lemire balances out the veteran guard wisdom with the youthful fight very evenly. Prime example of this is Wildcat reassuring the young Dr. Fate to keep pushing. It leads into a shocking close. Events have been spiraling but where the final image lands proves to be dire for the Society’s chances to survive.

Olortegui and Guerrero deliver on big action when the fight breaks down. The initial attack is presented with a two-page splash. It builds up the puzzling scenario that is unfolding. Once the Injustice Society reveals itself, pages kick into high gear. Another two page spread ushers in the bad guys for the conflict.

Readers watch as the action is fast paced and flying. There’s great matchups before eventually dividing to where issue #1 began. Once things return to “the present” Tower of Fate, the art focuses on the reactions of the losing battle. This caps off with back to back full page images that leave no doubt time is not on the Society’s side for victory.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The look back at the current JSA conflict provides readers with a vintage superhero sotry. Lemire brings out the JSA’s timeless strengths as characters with the writing. Olortegui, Guerrero and Wands construct a throwdown that is sure to please new and seasoned readers alike. Judging by the close, there may be no choice but to adapt or fade away.

The Creature Unit has arrived. Whether or not the world is ready or not remains to be seen. There’s a certain level on mystery surrounding this group. Dr. West might have bitten off more than she can chew with this squad. Plus, what is Brainiac scheming in the shadows?

Dastmalchian brings Vincent Velcro front and center for this issue. The dive into the backstory spotlights the vampire’s ill fated rescue attempt. His conversation with Dr. West reflects his loss and gives some clarity on to why he’s willing to work with Dr. West. Once events shift gears, the chapter heads into the combustible personalities put together for the mission at hand.

There is a certain element of “honor amongst theives” that carries in this series. Dr. West’s rally cry strikes where it needs to. Her hand is forced as Wanda (Shrieve) stumbles across a dead monster morgue in the base. Ultimately, the talk is swayed with orders of action. The latter portion of the book give time to the larger DCU stars involved, but events feel a touch rushed heading into the close. Once at the conclusion, the final page lands on a solid cliffhanger. It does its’ job leaving readers wanting more but could have been more impactful on its’ execution.

Hervás and Guimarães present Velcro’s rescue attempt with some striking imagery. The full page shot of him taking fire kicks things off in a big way. It’s followed by a more reactionary look with seeing his plans fall short. The expressions he gives speaks loudly to readers.

Another moment is Wanda’s discovery of the monster morgue. The near full page shot hits with its reveal. This shifts events towards a flashback involving Morgaine Le Fey. The full page image gives a clearer picture of Medusa’s past while sorting her place with the unit. Brainiac gets his fair share of panel time as he works in shadows. This boils over to Zatanna’s part. The closing image leads into a starling unveiling. How things play from here is literally anyone’s guess.

FINAL POINT: 7.5

With a solid portion of the story devoted to one character, the latest chapter deals with a pacing issue. Dastmalchian’s writing works with reaching the audience on Velcro’s story. The art brings into focus the troubled past with hopes for a better future. The only downside is Brainiac and Zatanna’s parts felt rushed. That said, the story looks to pick up speed with the mission finally starting its engines.

The dynamic between Lois and Kal is vastly different than the ones fans know. Aaron writes Lane as an ambitious soldier dedicated to the cause at hand. Superman is reluctant to comply to oppression. This results in a fast paced adventure. One theme that cannot be overlooked is the sense of right and wrong bestowed on the young Kryptonian.

After a brief attack, Superman addresses Lane in a blunt manner. This reflects the anger of the Peacemakers efforts to impose. From here, readers watch what Superman does best: inspire hope in hopelessness. Saving bystanders once an attack vehicle crashes is perfectly narrated by Lane. It mirrors the readers thoughts as this new version of Superman takes action. This builds towards a solid conclusion. Aaron builds a mix of classic teases with new takes. The final page solidifies the darkness lying ahead. One fight is over for now but easily not for long.

Sandoval and Arreola waste no time in setting a tense stage. The conflict between the Lazarus Corp and Superman fires off with a tremendous two page spread. This leads into a moment fans have been waiting to see. A one page image showcases the iconic cape in a completely new fashion. Events only escalate from here.

The rescue imagery brings out what fans love of Superman. The defiance to Lane’s mission. His selfless heroics is saving people trapped from a crash. Performing feats no one else can. The art team packs it all together in just a few pages. Superman’s impact is written on Lane’s face. The many emotions shown as she writes her events report speaks volumes. Events conclude with a dark and disturbing image. The true evil Superman is gearing to fight comes into light. It will be a challenge fans will be eager to watch be (hopefully) defeated.

With a blend of classic and new takes, Superman makes a loud statement in its’ latest chapter. Aaron’s writing keeps the Man Of Steel soaring with hope. Working as a P.I. thirteen weeks prior, readers watch as one case strikes a nerve with him. Hired by Koyuki Nakano, Gordon finds comfort in another broken soul. This leads into an unlikely romance with dangerous consequences.

From here, the story walks readers through weeks leading up to Nakano’s death. The tension fills up pages. Their confrontation is exploding with the pains of infidelity. Once events time jump to present, there becomes a fair share of detective work through the subplots brewing. Juggling two major rogues is tricky but Zdarsky balances them out without issue. This leads to a major revelation. Events are capped off with a changing of tides with Batman now knowing what lies ahead and where the signs point to in this troubling case.

Fornes steps in for art duties with this chapter. Along with Morey and Cowles, the art is very grounded in its approach. The more personal sides of Gordon slowly are unveiled. Readers watch as the affair takes flight. Mayor Nakano’s reactions are filled with proper distain. This comes into full focus when Gordon confronts the Mayor while looking for Koyuki. Each panel layers the foundation for the deadly end.

Once Batman appears, he makes a dramatic entrance via a half page panel. Seeing the Dark Knight soar into the Gotham sky will be a hit with readers. The art really takes hold once Batman appears to see Gordon. Morey’s coloring with the red lighting adds much to each frantic scene. This leads him into another attempt to save a possible victim. Action reminds Batman of how human he truly is. It also brings up another lingering theme of this current arc.

The question of rejuvenation gets a surprising conversation out of his best friend. Seeing Taylor tackle a Batman/Superman debate leads into a new direction with big ramifications. Readers might be a touch shocked at Superman’s response but it fits in place here. This kicks off a new stat quo (so to speak). Seeing how the fallout leads Batman into his investigation provides another classic confrontation. This gets upstaged by the close. The chapter ends with a definitive statement as to how human Batman has truly become.

Janin opens the issue with a few nightmare panels. It reflects the guilt Batman carries. This leads into a fast paced chase involving Robin. With this evolution of the character, Williamson writes Doomsday as way more than an unstoppable killing machine. This sets a high pace for the return to present time danger.

Once the story returns, the focus turns to Lois Lane. Seeing her inexperience with dealing with a fully powered Doomsday amps up the drama. The rest of the DCU waits with baited breath as the fight rages on. Events shift gears to an unlikely character jumping into the fray. It leads to a shocking twist.

From here, the fallout starts spiraling to the close. Where events land provides an eerie calm as time is not on the Kents side. Judging by the final page, more elements are in play than even the Man of Steel can fathom.

Mora and Sánchez immediately hits readers with an incredible two page splash. The recap of the Time Traveler gives more gravity to the situation at hand. As this figure, Doomsday is drastically different. The mannerisms displayed show a more cunning version of the monster. This ultimately gives way to the more reflective close. Leaving readers with a question on the final panel, this Superman story has many miles to go before hitting the finish line.

With a new version of pure evil manifesting in Metropolis, Superman has a tough choice to make. Williamson’s writing throws a mix of familiar and variant combat at readers. Mora, Sánchez and Maher deliver on striking visuals carrying the Man of Steel into a questionable better tomorrow. Where things lead now is anyone’s guess.

It was a matter of time. Ever since the legendary DC Comics disbanded, the void was felt. The Titans stepped up to become the premier team. In Waller’s defeat, the Trinity of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman started rebuilding the League in a bold ambition.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #1 by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, and Ariana Maher shows how their ultimate plan shapes up in a time of crisis.

Waid picks an unlikely lead for this opening chapter. Capitalizing on the expanded roster, featuring the naive Air Raid reflects the readers view. The story carries a massive weight as the League is reformed into a version never seen. With nearly every DC hero on roster, the possibilities are endless. Seeing Flash narrate the changes to new readers is a solid touch before jumping head first into the conflict.

Once the team rolls out, the writing takes the into a surprising direction. Instead of dealing with the dramatic onslaught at hand, the focus goes to a wounded soldier. Readers watch as the team powers together to save one life. As big as the threat is, simplifying it to a heroic act is what the League is all about. This leads into a great closing act. Waid leaves the audience with much to process including a very unforeseen cliffhanger ending. If this is any indication, the league is back in a BIG way!

To capture the epic level of events, few can outshine Dan Mora. Along with Bonvillain on colors, the League mission feels larger than life. With the opening Full & two page splashes, things start off on a great note. It transitions into tagging along with Air Raid. The humorous panels quickly fade as the team jumps into the issue at hand.

The art carries a tense feel as the JL is showcasing their skills. Panels feel bold as the heroes scramble to gain control of the situation. This rises up a few notches when attempting to save the wounded soldier. Seeing Star Sapphire and Flash race against the odds will have readers franticly waiting for the outcome. This rolls into the final pages. The closing pages pull off a fantastic swerve dousing the happy win for something more devious on the way.

FINAL POINT: 10

Without question, DC’s premier superhero team returns to the forefront in a monster way. Waid’s writing escalates the drama while bringing out the best of the huge roster. Mora, Bonvillain and Maher craft amazing images reminding everyone why the League is the team others set the benchmark too. Brace for an incredible run in the making.

Illidge casts the spotlight on Rocket for the opening chapter. After a great recap page (Editor Note: I wish more series did this), the key players start their plans in motion. Angela Alva looks to take advantage of a S.Y.S.T.E.M. power vacuum. Rocket looks to be finding a new direction after Icon has left Earth. The partnership with Hardware comes off as uneasy but workable for a greater purpose. The writing highlights Icon’s leaving to both differently. It also conveys Hardware trying to find his own purpose as a new fugitive.

Once events shift to the Shadow Cabinet, the story starts picking up speed. Both Anansi and Iron Butterfly get big entrances as their conflict goes forward. It leads to a unique closing act. The offer thrown down to Rocket is a thought-provoking one. Considering what she’s dealt with concerning Icon leaving, it leaves readers guessing for a cliffhanger ending. It’s not the only unended point to the sotry, but perfect for the beginning chapter.

This works to further cement Eclipso’s control until the overconfidence sits in.

With Superman in peril, Batman steps up to take over the situation. Batman shows concern (in his own manner) which pushes the heroes where they need to go to win. He isn’t alone as another hero crashes the party. The conflict builds perfectly to a break. Its fallout felt quick but all points needed were covered. It completes a great story which is par for the course with this series.

Gutiérrez and Herms elevate Eclipso to new heights with the art. The menacing half page panel kicks off his final play against the Greenland army. It’s countered by a near full page image of Batman and Robin running into action. Once this is unveiled, the action sequences come in fast and furious. This plays well to establish the Eclipso driven feelings between the JSA and their legacy counterparts.

The JSA-Eclipso six panel page cements that point home. It gets complimented by a powerful hero entering the final round. The art team sets the stage behind a Green Lantern fight. With such a big concept as JLU is, The Question belongs in the mix. It also challenges Montoya on a few levels.

Giving The Question her own “team” looks to provide a fair share of laughs and heroics. It gives a bright spot before the true conflict comes in. Segura hides the real play at hand very well. Seeing Montoya in action gives readers a sense of belonging as she attacks the intruder. Once the closing pages start, it displays great action before the final reveal. Based of the closing page, the innocence of the League’s hope is forever changed.

Tormey and Fajardo jr. bring the vigilante front and center for this story. The new stat quo is explained with a fantastic two page spread. Montoya’s costumed entrance jumps off the page with a one panel image. This leads into a strong flashback sequence. Speaking of familiar faces, one stands out as the surprise star of the issue. Knowing the stakes, the writing allows a reluctant hero to jump into the spotlight. It causes an uneasy alliance that will only grow more combustible as time goes on. This leads into a shocking close. With more surprises in tow, Adams wraps events off on quite the cliffhanger. Even with changes, Snyder’s writing brings out the classic Bat overtones like no one else. It leaves a massive impression as where things lead now is wide open. The only certainty is the imaginative take wins another round in its’ growing legacy.

Legends. It is a word that gets thrown around quite often. Few times does the word encompass what it’s attached to. In the case of DC’s first superhero team, that is the only way to describe them. Alan Scott. Jay Garrick. Ted Grant. Definitions of true timeless heroics.

The Justice Society of America have been fighting the good fight since the days of World War II. Since then, the team has adapted through the years without loosing itself in beliefs. It has also encompassed a family sense with many legacy heroes filling in the ranks. How does the team fare now in the new stat quo of “All In”?

The hero’s overly aggressive nature is a stark contrast from the team’s more grounded nature. It provides opposition to Jade. Her leadership as the new chair is questioned. The fight to stay true to form proves to be a difficult task. Other members are split on where they side. Where the elder members would handle this quickly, the younger generation are filled with emotional outbursts.

Readers do see a quick glimpse of the veteran lineup but they have their hands filled with a true threat. This doesn’t stop Lemire from throwing in a big swerve with the close. Readers watch as the final page drops a strong cliffhanger for the classic team to conquer.

Olortegui and Guerrero catch readers up to speed with a quick synopsis of the team with the opening pages. A near pull page image showcases the original lineup in action. The case throws many notable Batman rogues into the mix. It leads to Batman trying to keep composure with a swayed public. With the “Villains” running the city, Bruce Wayne struggles for control. The writing never falters on raising the tense emotions surrounding the case. This leads to a show-stopping closing act. Zdarsky throws one hell of a twist to conclude events for now. It will leave readers curious about how things will ever be the same again.

Aaron digs into Superman being the symbol more than the man for this opening chapter. The backstory of Krypton paints a very distinct notion. Being considered lower class forges the house of El. The writing has set them up as the common citizen rather than the elite of the planet’s society. It reflects how Superman is seen in many eyes. They both represent Truth, Justice and a better tomorrow.

Once events shift back to Earth, the story beigns to move swiftly. Aaron sets up Kal-El as a hero questioning his actions. The uncertainty of his motives adds to an already complex character. Once danger strikes the small Brazilian town he is in, the true hero readers know comes out. The writing debuts Superman in a grand way. The only downside is it is short lived, but with good reason. Other characters crash the party flipping everything on its’ axis. It leads to a teasing close as a new era has launched without question.

Sandoval and Arreola depicts Krypton as a soul crushing environment pending the status. The Els are shown to be making their best efforts to survive the looming odds. A two page spread clearly states the divide in classes. It also droves home the meaning of the “S” symbol. Another two page splash shows an all too familiar fate for Krypton as the unraveling of secrets begins.

Once on Earth, Kal-El’s journey is hidden behind panels showcasing the struggles at hand. The wait isn’t too long as a full page panel welcomes in the Man of Tomorrow into the good fight. Action images capture the classic feel of Superman stories. This leads into a unique full page with Carey’s lettering setting up a catching panel. The aftermath is filled with shocking surprises while ushering readers to the close. Ince the final page hits, the art displays a haunting look as time is fleeting for happiness. It’s an excellent showcase for a debut tale.

Using the Atomic Skull as the lead-in villain shows off Lois’s skills. Williamson writes her as a determined hero ready to seize the day. The back and forth between the Kents eases readers into the huge return. Knowing the big bad here, it is a true challenge that Lois showcases a quick range of emotions. Williamson throws a big curve in with the Time Trapper during this point. His appearance leads to the mind-blowing final page. There is no doubt fans will have MUCH to say about this shocking reveal.

DAN MORA. Does anything need to be said after that? The artwork is incredible as always. A fantastic two page splash shows off a horrific future where Superman appears to run out of time. This speeds back to the present where Mora and Sanchez capture the Superman movie feel with vintage Daily Planet panels. This concludes with a fun sequence of costume change rolling into another fantastic two page image.

Action flows at a high speed and never lets the readers go. When you think “Superman”, this issue delivers on it. Another striking two page image welcomes in the true bad to the story. Lois’ reactions are subtle but spike up the drama. At this stage, the story changes lanes into the Trapper close. The chapter finishes its’ time with an unforgettable final full page. There’s no way anyone sees that and doesn’t immediately have a reaction!

The new era in Metropolis kicks off in a monster way. Williamson brings back a deadly foe in a whole new light. With the art of Mora and Sanchez guiding the way, the chapter takes readers on quite the journey. Brace for the final page. It’s a show stopper!
