Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! For this entry, we’re checking out a new series on the great Comixology Originals line by way of Marc Bernardin. Readers might know Marc Bernardin’s name from the Eisner award nominee “Adora and The Distance” along with his work in podcasting (Fatman Beyond w/ Kevin Smith) and TV (Star Trek: Picard). Census #1 by Bernardin, Adam Freeman, Sebastián Piriz, Bernardo Brice and Sarah Litt welcomes readers into the life of Liam Malone and his first day on the job, which is anything but normal. Let’s not waste any more time and jump into this first issue, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue kicks off with with one of the best “You’re probably wondering how I got here” pages in recent memory. Liam is tied up with only his underwear on while 3 demons are standing over him. From here, readers are taken back to the day prior as Liam is going for a job interview. This scenario seems very normal as Liam is talking to a possible employer with a simple job posting: “ Good Pay, Flexible Hours, No Experience Needed”. It sounds too god to be true, especially for someone looking for a win. Liam gets the job with the Census Bureau, which sounds like it will be a simple job. At this stage in life , Liam should know that anything that sounds this perfect is more than likely flawed.

With a tablet in hand, Liam sets out to count the residents of his first assigned address. With should be a routine count in a Brooklyn apartment spins wildly out of control. What starts as a friendly conversation quickly speeds into another moment that our protagonist was not expecting when he signed up for this job. Readers will see how Liam got into the mess in page 1 and if he can find his way out of that crazy scene. The conclusion of this issue will leave readers with a clear sense of where the book is heading and that they need to jump on board now.

Very solid debut issue. Bernardin, (along with Adam Freeman) create a fun beginning on Liam’s journey. The story is great balance with horror and supernatural elements along with well placed shots of comedy mixed in. Those themes rise up more to the reader when referencing the initial first case. Liam’s means to escape is quite the creative one that does cause a laugh out loud moment. No spoilers here, but it’s presented in a way that readers can only see Liam pulling off. The storytelling plays into his awkwardness in dealing with others as a strength. At no point did I feel that the story feel too cliche and it made for an enjoyable welcome into the life and times of Liam Malone.

Piriz’s art brings this story to life with capturing Liam’s ineptness into the new job field he’s entered. The facial expressions being showcased tell much of Liam’s character. Seeing his interactions with one of the residents of his first assignment to his new boss and what’s revealed at the end, Piriz crafts Liam’s conversations with a feel of uncertainty and reluctance. Readers will be able to pick up on this part of his character rather quickly but it’s never something that takes them out of the story. In fact, it’s something that as this series goes forward will become a stronger focus for readers to get behind and root for Liam to win.

Overall, Census #1 provides readers with a great story of self-discovery and unexpected travels through the backdrop of New York City. Bernardin, Freeman, Piriz and the rest of the creative team present readers with the saga of Liam Malone. Where it goes from here is anyone’s guess, but that’s why I feel it will be one that you simply can’t miss reading each month. Make sure to check it out on Comixology this week.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, We’re nearing the conclusion of Boom Studios’ violent horror saga of the fearsome supernatural five. Basilisk #11 by Cullen Bunn, Jonas Scharf, Alex Guimaraes & Ed Dukeshire sets up the major players for the apocalyptic conclusion forthcoming. Let’s jump into this issue and see how this story prepares for its’ final confrontation, shall we?

Basilisk #11 - On Sale September 7th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story has dwindled down to a few major players as readers head to the finish line:

Hannah, who is the lone survivor of a Chimera attack, as made a deal with devil after barely surviving her last run-in with the sinister group.

Vanessa, who has become the last true member of the Chimera but hasn’t been able to stop Hannah yet.

Regan, who defected from the Chimera to help Hannah, but fell out of her graces and is lost in direction at the moment.

This issue opens up with a flashback sequence of Vanessa’s upbringing and more reveals of how this incarnation of the Chimera came to be. Vanessa is talking with Regan in the present. The conversation feels like the final goodbye as they go over her sorted history. All the while Hannah has now partnered with Barret, a disciple of the Chimera, who wants to see Vanessa eliminated once and for all and will sacrifice Hannah to do it.

The rest of the story plays out with the hidden tale of how the Chimera came into contact with the cult that has found Vanessa. It is some frightening imagery but readers will get some long awaited answers to how the violent reign began. They also see how one of the last characters left is preparing for whats to come. As always, no punches are pulled here. The build is done well as it now appears that the final confrontation is ready to be told.

Bunn sets the pace for is sure to be a memorable final farewell to this horrific tale. The road of Vanessa has been a very interesting story to follow as she has gone thru some dramatic changes sine the early days of this book. With this issue, it appears that she is fully aware of what is coming with the conversation she has with Regan. The majority of the issue is centered here as new information about the Chimera is brought to light. Hannah’s big moment form last issue feels almost as an after thought but when put into context, her story is just about told so no need to add more to close. Regan will be one to watch as she seems to be the odd one out in the shuffle. Solid build towards what’s coming.

Even with the conclusion forthcoming, Scharf doesn’t slow down with the disturbing imagery. Vanessa’s flashback tale shows of how brutal her story truly is. This book doesn’t break away from what it’s known for. It is not one for the weak at heart. The art delivers on setting the mood for what’s about to go down. The final sequences with Vanessa are prime examples with the big “exclamation points” put on with the final full page shot.

Overall, Basilisk #11 felt like the last hurrah between two characters going into the last confrontation. Bunn, Scharf and company tie up some loose ends while creating the landscape for one hell of a finale. Don’t miss this book when it drops at the LCS this week.

For this entry, we’re checking out the penultimate issue of one of Boom Studios’s most creative titles ever. Once and Future #29 by Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain & Ed Dukeshire begins to wrap up its epic fantasy saga of magic and mayhem. After last issue, let’s not waste another moment and jump right in to see where Bridgette, Duncan and Rose stand now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Bridgette McGuire, her grandson Duncan & his friend Rose have been thru some dire situations in 28 past issues, but nothing like what is coming now. They have suffered a time slip that has caused an issue with their plan to stop the battle with an evil “King Arthur.” Meanwhile, Bridgette’s daughter Mary lost her son Galahad recently and has started to work with her estranged mother to end this madness. Throw in the fact that Rose was apparently killed last issue by the Green Knight.

This issue opens up with a remembrance at Galahad’s grave. Mary is nowhere to be found, but Rose’s mother is attending the grave. It has an eerie backdrop as Rose lays dead at the blade of the Green Knight. From this moment, The Knight challenges The evil King and is killed instantly. However all is not what it seems. Rose survives as she is in possession of the King’s Scabbard. At this moment, there is a HUGE GAME CHANGER MOMENT that I won’t spoil but WOW! The rest of the issue literally throws a brick on the gas petal and never looks back. The final moments are set up for Bridgette, Duncan, Mary and Rose! If you’ve ever read this series before, these final issues are must haves!

Gillen wastes no time in delivering some epic moments with this issue. None will be bigger than Rose’s survival from the Green Knight. Readers will have much to process here. The pacing works and even when the book feels faster in storytelling, nothing feels forced or lost. The major reveal has a lasting impact and sets forth a domino effect for the other characters. Everyone is getting their screen time to finish out their journeys . All the cards are on the table here. Absolutely a must read (Grade 10/10).

There is no better artist in comics at this moment than Dan Mora. Superstar work being done with the highly imaginative tale being presented here. There is an epic battle within these pages and Mora delivers on a “big fight feel” with so much emotion, you can’t help but feel it as a reader. The visuals never cease to impress. One of the biggest downers of seeing this comic conclude is not seeing Mora push the creative limits with this vastly changing retelling of characters. Phenomenal work 10/10

Overall, Once and Future #29 is a comic that simply put: can NOT be missed this week! Gillen, Mora and company set the stage for what should be an intense closing of one of comics’ best books. Make this a priority to pick up this week at the LCS!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we’re taking a look at the first project from Marvel Arts, which is a partnership between Abrams Comic Arts and Marvel Comics. FANTASTIC FOUR: FULL CIRCLE #1 by Alex Ross (legendary artist of “Marvels” and “Kingdom Come”), Josh Johnson, and Ariana Maher is the debut graphic novel from this venture. If graphic novels sound a bit familiar, they were a staple of Marvel in the 1980’s (One notable one was X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills which was the inspiration for “X2 X-Men United” movie). To bring them back, it has to stand out at the comic shops and deliver. There is a tremendous amount of hype behind this project. Let’s take a deeper dive and see how this new project shapes up, shall we?

FANTASTIC FOUR: FULL CIRCLE #1 - On Sale Sept. 6th

Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic). Sue Storm (The Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and Ben Grimm (The Thing) comprise one for the most legendary teams in all of pop culture fandom. No adventure is ever normal and the one happening here fits the mold perfectly.

The story opens up on a rainy evening with Ben making the most of his evening in the Baxter Building. A midnight snack gets interrupted by Johnny. The playful banter that has been long associated with the first family of Marvel gets stopped when a mysterious figure appears. The intruder’s identity turns out to be someone who tried impersonating Ben in the past tying into Reed’s first adventure into the Negative Zone. However, before they can really examine why he has returned, mysterious creatures start flying out of his mouth, basically using his body as a Trojan horse to attack the family.

After the creatures are subdued, Reed goes to work breaking down what has happened. The creatures gave off negative energy. That is a trademark of what readers might have already suspected but it was confirmed: The Negative Zone and it’s ruler Annihilus looks to be prime suspect. The team suits up and makes their way into the every-dangerous environment.

Once they arrive, they start tracking down the source of the creatures. When they come across what’s happening, it’s a sight they’re not ready to expect. What do they see, better yet WHO do they see? The story begins an epic journey into the unknown as readers are taken on a roller coaster ride of imagination. How will this story unfold from here? Readers will have much excitement to enjoy as this book brings out the strengths and charm of Marvel’s First Family in a vintage tale for everyone.

What a fantastic read! Ross takes themes from Fantastic Four #51 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby (1961) and introduces them to an entire new fan base. Ross steps away from his traditional painted art storytelling style to really hone in on the Kirby energy for this book. The scenes pop from page to page. Take a look at the incredible preview art for this book. When anyone can give the visual impression of recapturing “The King’s” magic, it is one of the highest complements someone can give (IMO). Ross nailed it out of the park. The story felt like a throwback but not losing any appeal to modern readers who might not be as familiar with the early days for the FF.

The story itself was one that carried itself with wonderment. Diving into the world of the Negative Zone can be tricky yet, was pulled off flawlessly here. Tying in other elements of the FF’s world (The banter between Ben & Johnny, Reed’s quest for knowledge) presented excellent moments throughout. At no point did this book feel dated to where it lost interest. It reminded older readers why the Fantastic Four was a staple at the comic shops since the 1960’s. It also catches new readers with how unique it looks and reads. It’s quirky, vibrant and engaging. It’s a fantastic experience all around (pun intended). Great work.

Overall, Fantastic Four: Full Circle #1 is an excellent story with mind-blowing visuals throughout. Ross takes a risk going away from his traditional style which fans come to expect and wins the gamble. The experience is nothing short of a memorable read that comic fans need to make a point to check out. Don’t miss this book at the comic shops this week.

How is Dudley faring after the last issue’s cliffhanger? Let’s jump back in for a deep dive on this incredible new book, shall we?

Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine #2 - On Sale September 6th

Dudley Datson’s life is one that is ever-changing. Datson is a young teenager who’s an inventor of “Duds” an L.C.D. integrated fiber clothing. After presenting it with a less than stellar execution, Dudley bears witness to Dr. Shae, his mentor at the Brooklyn Academy of Engineering, defending herself from attackers who are trying to take a valuable watch. Defending is putting things mildly as Dr. Shae is wearing an exoskeleton to fend off these attackers. Now caught up in a situation he’s not ready for, Dudley gets help from an unlikely ally: Daedalus, Dr. Shae’s dog….who apparently can now talk?!

This issue picks up with the attackers now shifting focus towards Dudley. Daedalus shows that not only can he talk, but can handle his own verses these forces. Once one gets the upper hand on Daedalus, Dudley uses some quick thinking to handle the crisis at hand using his own invention. Noticing that his aggressor isn’t human, Datson makes a play to subdue the threat & the pair escape danger.

From here, Datson and Daedalus catch up about what is going on here. With a touch of excitement, Datson is introduced to the Chymical Society. What is the story behind this group? Better yet, What is the origin of Daedalus? How does Dudley fit into this equation? Readers will get those answers plus a final page that will keep them locked in until the next issue drops.

Snyder continues to craft a fun and energetic story with the life of Dudley Datson. The issue explains much of Daedalus and why he is WAY more than he seems. The secrets involved with his character were very surprising and validated on how creative this story is. This book’s storytelling shines when they go all in on focusing readers onto the multi-layered elements of it’s main characters. The dynamic between Daedalus and Dudley is enjoyable and only gets better as the issue progresses forward. “Reluctant Partners” is an understatement but this issue proves there will be many more panels with these two that should make readers very pleased following Dudley’s journey moving forward.

Igle’s artwork continues to impress with the details thrown in this issue. Seeing Daedalus’ story explained thru the timeline was a great segment. Everything down to the panel set-up made that part jump off the page. One of the more fun moments in this book was how the pair accessed the entrance to the Chymical Society. When reading this book, readers can tell how much enjoyment the creators are getting with stories with moments like these. Another stand out final page closes the chapter on this book & readers will be electrified to check out the next issue.

Overall, the adventure of Dudley Datson is just beginning and its’ enthusiastic journey is one not to miss. Snyder, Igle and company push the imagination boundaries with a thrilling chapter that is sure to please. The adventure is just beginning so make sure not to miss out on the latest issue when it drops on Comixology Originals .

For this entry, we’re checking out a companion piece for the “Charge To 100” in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Universe by Boom Studios. Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 by Paul Allor, Kath Lobo, Anna Kekovsky Chandra, Fabi Marques, Sara Antonellini, Sharon Marino and Ed Dukeshire shows a spotlight on The Death ranger, who’s playing a big role in the monumental Might Morphin Power Rangers #100 coming in September. With so much story line involving this character, getting a deeper story on this mysterious figure will help compliment the future anniversary issue coming in late September. Let’s take a deeper look at this issue and see what’s happening here, shall we?

Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 - On Sale August 31st

The issue opens up with Maavi telling Young Andros and Young Zhane, who are both heavily featured in the Power Rangers book by Ryan Parrott and Marco Renna, a bedtime story. She is telling them the story of Spa’ark, the Gold Omega ranger. That story begins with the Omega Rangers taking care of Sister Supernova, a figure that poes a far greater danger than they realize. After neutralizing the threat, they bring Supernova back to Safehaven. During the down time, Spa’ark has a conversation with Haza, another ranger on the team. Haza brings up Spa’ark’s isolation and possible reasons why. Unfortunately, they don’t get to finish that conversation as Supernova escapes and does the unthinkable: kills Haza in the escape.

Feeling responsible for what happened, Spa’ak embarks on a dangerous path trying to fix this wrong. With another threat arising, Spa’ark does some questionable acts, including working with the Galactic Maw, who is up to no good. . How does this play into the creation of the Death Ranger? Can Spa’ark fix things or will he only make them worse? What will his teammates do about these actions? How does this tie into current times? Readers will have all those answers and a great final page to tie everything up before returning to the “Charge To 100” run.

This issue is a great companion piece to what’s going on in the present time of Power Rangers. Allor gives a nice spin on telling the Death ranger’s origin. Having this told to the kid versions of Andros and Zhane is a great touch to explain what is happening here. The story flows with a steady pace with giving the readers enough time to figure out what’s happening. This works well for new readers to the lore as there’s enough of a guide to steer them into who is who and what is happening. The overall story caps everything up and leaves readers with a final parting shot that echos in previous books to tie things together.

The art teams did solid work here as well. Bringing the range of emotions out of Spa’ark helped draw readers to his point of view and desperate actions. Once the tragedy strikes, the issue hits its’ high notes as it shifts gears in bringing Spa’ark’s plans front and center. The panels show a great deal of emotions with what is happening in the latter half of the book. There’s a lot to break down with how we see the Death Ranger emerge but it’s brought to the readers’ attention without being distracting to where a new reader could become confused easily.

Overall, Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 provides noteworthy details to enhance the story in the overall books leading to the “Charge To 100” anniversary issue. The creative team make this very enjoyable for new and old readers alike. Make sure to check it out at the local comic shop this week.

THE ALL-NIGHTER #9 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

For this entry, we’re looking at the penultimate issue of one of the most creative books on the Comixology Originals line. The All-Nighter #9 by Chip Zdarsky, Jason Loo, Paris Alleyne, and Aditya Bidikar shapes up the story for one amazing conclusion. If or whatever reason haven’t checked the story out yet, the first chapter is available in print form via Dark Horse Comics. Let’s take a closer look at how the second chapter is heading everyone’s favorite diner team into its finale, shall we?

The All-Nighter #9- On Sale August 30th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Last we saw our vampire group from the Diner, things were looking very bleak. Cynthia has been leading the family since Ian’s disappearance & it has not been an easy road. Joy, the “youngest” of the family took off to reconnect with her real family. That move didn’t go over as good as Joy had hoped. Alex, the “teenage hero” has been trying his best to continue being a super hero, but that has strained much including his relationship with Andrea, a former police officer. Lastly, Ian, who was the leader of this group was imprisoned by Lazaruk, who seeks to take over by posing as “The Justice Angels”, to sneak attack the public on their way to conquer.

This issue picks up with Cynthia working with “Francis” (aka Frankenstein) to free Ian from Lazaruk’s hold. It’s an interesting dynamic but with the stakes this high, alliances are formed to hopefully save the day. Will this duo save Iam beofre it’s too late? Meanwhile, Lazaruk has confronted Joy about joining his regime With the offer of not hiding in shadows as a prize, Joy listens. She is shown Lazaruk’ operation and has many questions. All the while, Alex is investigating Lazaruk as well. Unfortunatly as Alex tries helping someone, Lazaruk and the Justice Angels find him. What will happen now? Can the diner team stop Lazaruk? Will someone not make it until the end? Readers will need to read this issue and find out!

Zdarsky has everything moving very fast heading to the final issue. Lazaruk unveiling his plan and seemingly ready for the opposition was a fun read. From this entire second run, he has been a character making moves but with the end near, Lazaruk has taken his actions up a few notches. The dynamic between Cynthia and Francis was another great element of the story. There is a great moment where the mythos is flipped a bit to show a different side to the character. Every major player had their page-time without feeling rushed or forced. With a finale looming, this should be something special to watch.

Loo continues to design big moments for this final arc. Seeing Francis unleashed as what happened when he tried freeing Ian was out of normal character but illustrated to the reader how high the stakes are for this mission. Seeing the encounter between Lazaruk and Alex was a great introduction to what is coming next issue. Seeing Lazaruk’s plan start to roll will add much more impact for the big closing.

Overall, The All-Nighter #9 sets up the chessboard for a resounding exclamation point for this story. Zdarsky, Loo and company position all the major players for a final confrontation that readers should be counting down the days to read. Make sure to check this out at Comixology this week.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, The next wave of “Scottober” books via Best Jackett Press shows no signs of a sophomore slump as they have a sure-fire smash on their hands in the form of BarnStormers by Scott Snyder, Tula Lotay, Dee Cunniffe and Richard Starkings. The first issue was a fantastic debut introducing readers into the world of Hawk Baron and his “partner” Tillie. Barnstormers #2 just dropped on Comixology Originals, and this story is one you won’t be able to pass over reading. Let’s take a deeper dove into this issue and see what’s going on, shall we?

When we last saw Hawk E. Baron aka Bix, a former WW1 pilot who’s paying the rent check by performing aerial tricks, took an unexpected turn. Thinking he was finally going to hit a big score, Baron couldn’t hav worse luck. After crashing a wealthy family’s wedding party (literally), Hawk has become a wanted man due to his unexpected partner, Tillie. After she helps Hawk escape the Carlyle property, Tillie hops in Baron’s plane and the pair fly away. Little do they know what lies ahead for them.

This issue jumps in where the pair finally lands after such a dramatic escape. Tillie offers Baron a parting offer as she plans her next move. The move? Crash a wealthy party and steal some food to start. Baron reluctantly goes along after hearing Tillie’s story. In a mix of divine intervention and living in the moment, Tillie divulges to Baron how the wedding wasn’t one of love but of financial convenience as The Carlyles were putting pressure on her family for their land. In her words, When Baron arrived, she took it as a a sign to run. Meanwhile, her former fiancee is making plans of his own to get Tillie and Baron, in the form of Zeke West. Readers get a quick background of him during this issue which is very solid.

From this moment, readers are shown a side of Baron that hasn’t been shown before. What is his big secret? The story shifts back to seeing how Baron becomes more involved in Tillie’s plans. How does the pair escalate things? It’s a perfect set-up for shifting gears in the story and one fans can’t help but become fully entrenched with for the next chapter.

Brilliant issue. Snyder hits two big points in this issue that will grab readers attention for a double take. The first one is Baron’s secret. When the reveal is done, it will catch readers off guard for it’s only in a a quick moment. If you go back and re-read issue #1, you can see how it fits in with a few panels there as well. It also adds another layer into his character. Since we’ve been introduced to Hawk E. Baron, he’s come across as an unlucky pilot trying to find his way. With this revelation, the latter half of the issue carries more weight.

The second big point is Tillie’s endgame. When she explains her motives for leaving the Carlyles, she appears to be a sympathetic character. This changes quickly as they attended the Rollinger party. The further they work thru the party, it becomes clear Tillie has had some plans in motion the entire time. How that fits in the overall story will be such a fun read.

Absolutely stunning art by Lotay and Cunniffe. There was one moment that really stood out to me for being so creative and subtle at the same time. There is a scene where Zeke is getting hired by the Carlyles. How Lotay and Cunniffe crafted the sunlight hitting the window blinds to create the striped shadows came off well. It added a unique feel to the scene. Mixing in the imagery of the Rollinger family business to this time period was great as well. Without spoiling too much, the visions Bix sees here feel to play a bigger factor down the road. Excellent final page to close out this chapter.

Overall, Barnstormers #2 delivers on a fantastic read that readers will be locked in on from the opening page. Snyder, Lotay and company present a multi-layered dive into the unlikely pair and their dangerous adventures. Excellent storytelling and phenomenal art will make this a must-add for your reading list! Don’t delay picking it up.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! One of the best new series of 2022 continues its epic debut story arc with another must-read issue! Grim #4 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano for Boom Studios has been an absolute smash since it debuted in the local comic shops. Last issue left readers with a final page that raised many questions. How does this latest issue fare? Let’s take a deeper dive and see, shall we?

The saga of Jessica Harrow continues to take some very exciting turns. After a routine job of guiding a dead soul into the afterlife as a reaper goes sideways, her (after)life has been turned upside down. After somehow crossing over into the land of the living, Jessica starts searching for answers. None of which her boss Adira is happy with. With Adira trying to stop her search for the truth, Jessica and her friends make an escape from The End, who is trying to silence this situation once and for all.

This issue jumps in (literally) with Jessica’s team making a leap from a tower to escape The End. During their free fall, The Scythe she wields opens up a portal. Where that portal leads: Las Vegas! Meanwhile, Adira assesses the situation and determines Jessica has Death’s Scythe! She sends The End to find her in Vegas. While in Vegas, Jessica somehow saves a drunken party-goer from being killed. However, that interaction turns out to be more than it seems. What happens that changes the course for Jessica? It’s a surprise that will have fans talking along with a final chapter of the issue that sets events in motion.

The story of Jessica Harrow keeps taking such great twists, all thanks to the incredible writing of Phillips. Jessica’s world is one that never feels predictable and always keeps things exciting. The mystery of who she is has been great to follow. This issue shines when she makes the save on the party-goer. Jessica shows why there’s something more to her with her heroic actions. This issue focused more on the journey’s of both Jessica and Adira, which is no a bad thing. It gave Jessica moments to dive into her own mystery. On the flip-side, Adira, while not featured heavily, made the most of the time on page. The pace kept things moving and will invest readers from the opening page to close. Excellent job.

This book has such a unique feel to it, all thanks to Flaviano & the rest of the art team. It always has panels that pop right off the page. None bigger this issue then when Jessica makes the save. This vision of Las Vegas also sands out thanks to the coloring work of Renzi. When there, it stands out with its use of pink/purple as a backdrop to the strip. Readers can’t help but be locked into its surroundings. As someone who’s visited Vegas many times, this felt like the energy you see when you’re in Sin City. The final panels put a solid exclamation point on this issue!

Overall, Grim #4 proves why this book is an absolute can’t miss. Phillips, Flaviano and company continue to make one of the coolest books on the market with the work being put in here. The story of Jessica Harrow keeps getting better and better so make sure you stop down to your LCS this week and get this book!

MAGIC: Ajani Goldmane #1 by Seanan McGuire, Nori Retherford, Jaques Salomon, Giuseppe Cafaro, Lea Caballero, Michael Shelfer and Ed Dukeshire is a one shot story that is perfect for new readers to check out. Let’s see how this issue presents one of the more popular characters in the MTG landscape, shall we?

Now MTG is not one of my stronger fandoms of knowledge so I made a call to Rich from the 3FNpodcast, who is very well versed in the MTG lore. Rich said “Ajani is one of the most beloved Planeswalkers in all of magic. Magic players who wield white mana decks or Orhov decks will always make room for a good Ajani.”

This issue starts off with Ajani looking over Naya, his territory, when he is suddenly attacked by Jazal. However this turns out to be an illusion of sorts as the story shifts to the Naya Shard of Alara. Ajani finds out that some of his nieces and nephews are playing a game based off of a story of lore. Once aware of the story, Ajani decides to clear up some confusion and tell the children a story: What it really means to be a Planeswalker.

Readers are taken on a fun story with “The Tale Of The Endless Hunger” as Ajani and his friend Tamiyo help the people of Eldraine survive a threat. The story isn’t enough for the children so Ajani tells another tale called “The Story Of Shadows upon Stone.” With the children being still restless for more excitement, Ajani finally tells his story of Jazal in “The Tale Of The Lucky Hunt.” Readers will have much to enjoy with this issue and get treated to a solid epilogue to close.

As previously mentioned, I’m not the biggest Magic: The Gathering expert, but I really thought this was a cool read. McGuire does an excellent job introducing Ajani to readers of the various levels of fandom. Breaking the stories of Ajani into three small stories was a nice touch and showcased why this character is so beloved. Each story felt different but carried an overall theme. Pacing was never lost and seeing how Ajani interacted in telling his stories made for an enjoyable read.

The art teams did a stellar performance throughout this issue. Having various artists on the 3 small stories made each one feel unique. “The Tale Of The Lucky Hunt” really jumped out with the action sequences, even with how brief they were. The artists kept things moving along with nothing feeling too rushed. There was a lot of ground to cover and the creative team as a whole delivered on a read that will be very pleasing to Magic: The Gathering Fans.

Overall, MAGIC: Ajani Goldmane #1 is a great introduction to a fabled character in the MTG universe. New readers will enjoy the heroic moments that connect on the first read thanks to the exceptional work from the creative teams. More seasoned fans will be happy with how this character came across when they pick this issue up at the LCS this week.

For this edition, we’re checking out the return of one of the most anticipated returns to the comic shops in recent memory! Barbaric: Axe to Grind #1 by Michael Moreci, Nathan Gooden, Addison Duke & Jim Campbell for VAULT COMICS continues on the adventures of Owen, a cursed barbarian, his merry drinking partner…Axe, and Soren as they bring the action and insanity that only this trio can deliver on. How does this next chapter go? Let’s take a deeper dive into this latest adventure, shall we?

BARBARIC: AXE TO GRIND #1 - On Sale August 17th

This issue kicks off with Owen and company doing what they do best: raising a bit of mayhem as they’re assisting an old friend, Steel with a problem. The problem: A Vampire lord and an army of not just any old vampires, but some that are literal GIANTS! If the lord is taken care of, Steel should be free of his curse of being a vampire. It’s a wild scene to open with but this type of action is nothing new to Owen. The battle sets the tone for the rest of the book and it’s resolution bears one notable surprise. Steel, who had been under the possession of the Vampire Lord has developed a complex where he struggles to fight. However they have no time to deal with that at the moment.

It is revealed to Owen that a familiar face has returned. it is one that strikes an odd reaction out of Owen. The name is Gladius, the orc warlord. Steel makes it known that the three of them have some history, but Owen does not want to entertain conversation about it, he’s rather inclined for a pint. Eventually the truth comes out and it’s a noteworthy reveal. From here, the group embarks on another journey. What lies ahead for Owen, Axe and Soren? What is REALLY Steel’s deal? And what about that last page? Readers will have much to enjoy when this issue drops.

Moreci picks right up with the strong elements of this story. the action, interactions and humor thrown in between the three major players is always an entertaining read. The trio has turned into a very dysfunctional family with how they’ve bonded over the adventures. This issue spends a good amount of time developing Steel and his “performance issues”. Owen’s attempts to understand what’s going on gave a nice counter to his usual brawling bravado. However, readers will be pleased that Axe and Soren maintain their banters that have made the characters such a hit with fans.

Gooden’s artwork continues to impress with this issue.The creatures readers see in this issue stand out and give a huge boost to the fantasy world we’re witnessing. From the vampire giants to the monster readers see later, the art steals scenes away. Take a look when Axe has its’ reactions to the fights they’re in for proof of this. The only thing that outshines those moments are ones with Owen’s reactions dealing with Steel and the return of Gladius. His pained and sometimes, fearful body language speaks loudly at the danger lying ahead. Trying to be undersanding of Steel’s situation is troubling to Owen, but the art makes it work for the overall narrative.

Overall, Barbaric: Axe To Grind #1 lives up to the standard this franchise has set. Action, Humor and Drama all make up the world of Owen, Axe and Soren. Readers get a front row seat thanks to Moreci, Gooden and company thanks to their excellent work. The book remains a must-read for these reasons, Don’t miss out on this issue at your Local Comic Shops this week.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this blog post, we’re taking a look at a book which has been generating some buzz for the past few weeks and it’s rightly justified. 20TH CENTURY MEN by Deniz Camp, S. Morian and Aditya Bidikar for Image Comics is a fascinating read which presents a world of individuals and “heroes” in a vision that is simply all its’ own. Honestly, there isn’t anything at the LCS currently that is such a creative mix of so many narratives with nothing being held back . It is not your average comic book and that’s a very good thing to be.

Before we get started with the blog, there are some graphic images in the preview below. Take that in consideration before moving forward. If you’re all good, Let’s take a deeper dive into the debut issue and see what all the hype is about, shall we?

The issue starts are in 1969 Vietnam. As a mysterious colonel arrives to an army base, he becomes witness to a horrific scene. As the soldiers take him to see “the Tin man”, they come across what appears to be a deadly marker with bodies and body parts all around the land. The marker looks as a warning sign to anyone trying to come through that they will not be well received. Readers will have no question about the intensity of the story they are about to embark on.

From here, the book jumps to 1948 Moscow. A mother and son are confronted by Russian police where they take the boy, Petar Platonov away to an unknown future at the time. That future is shown later in 1987 Kabul. Platonov is know known as ‘The Iron Star”, an armed walking weapon that is the “hero” this world needs. The Iron Star “influences a conference of dignitaries into coming to terms on their disagreements.

From this point, Readers are taken into a journey into the mind of Petar and what his role is being the Iron Star appears to be. It is a cold picture of reality but it’s balanced out from a connection and conversation with Azra, an Afghan woman who’s committed to helping her people. The interactions she has with Petar seems as she is the only person in this world who sees he’s more than a weapon.

Their conversation is cut brief as Petar is debriefed about another situation in an all too familiar place to him. What does Jalalabad mean to him? During this time, a threat is introduced that will be a major cause of concern. Who is this threat? What are their motives? How does Petar and Azra tie into this? For those answers, you need to check this issue out. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed you did!.

Wow….this is a very excellent and intense read. Camp dives into presenting this unapologetic, harsh world with a hero that is forged from its powerful landscape. Petar has many layers to his character and scars that he wears (figuratively and literally). The amount of hard moments he has lived thru has made him a reflection of the times he currently stands in. Some of his interactions with others read devoid of all emotions except for his time with Azra. While appearing in only a few moments, she represents hope in this unforgiving tale. With the overall themes of politics and war looming throughout, combining that realism into a “hero”’s story such as Petar’s is almost unheard of. Camp answers that challenge with a very compelling tale that stands out from many other books.

Morian’s art crafts this dark, unapologetic story that captures the gravity of the times these characters live in. “War Is Hell” is brought to life with the imagery in the flashback sequences. For a book like this to work, nothing can be restrained. From the opening scenes in Vietnam 1969 to the Jalalabad sequence, Morain depicts these moments with the gripping realness of this dire scenarios. The conversations with Azra show off the human elements of these characters which gives a solid contrast to the overall feel of this book. Once readers get to the “big bad” of the story, Morian’s subtle use of cigar smoke (in one panel in particular) and facial expressions speak volumes of what this character is adding to the story at hand. The art complements the writing perfectly to establish the broken climate readers are about to enter.

Overall, 20th Century Men #1 presents such a distinctive vision of creativity that simply can’t be ignored. Camp and Morian (along with Bidikar) welcome readers into a very multi-layered story with exceptional art to guide them through what is an ever-changing volatile environment. This is one book to make a point to check out at the local comic shops for NCBD.

For this edition, we’re continuing to follow an explosive debut issue on the Comixology Originals line. Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #2 by Stephanie Phillips, Valeria Favoccia, Ellie Wright, Sheelagh D, and Saida Temofonte furthers the return of the popular character created by Mark Dawson. The debut set a high pace, so let’s see how the latest issue shapes up, shall we?

When we last saw Beatrix, she has re-emerged in Japan as a hired assassin. Her latest work was tracking down the killer of many Triad members, known as “Yaomo” or “Demon”. The first round didn’t go the way Rose had planned, but for readers, it delivered on hooking them into this fantastic story.

This issue opens up with a flashback sequence to the moment Rose was betrayed by her team and her family was changed forever. It’s a nightmare that haunts Rose as she recovers from her encounter with the Demon. e is also informed that she’s off the case. However, to no one’s surprise, Rose isn’t letting this one go.

As the story progresses, readers get a glimpse into the Demon’s past and motivation on why she does what she does. This leads into the next target. With the Demon ready to strike, Rose appears to stop her once and for all. The question becomes will she? Readers will get that answer but maybe not the resolution that they are expecting as the final panel in the book will set the stage for the next phase of the book.

Phillips is building towards something very big with this story. Rose’s journey isn’t so simplistic in the sense of just “Vengeance”. Seeing how she is playing the encounter of the confrontation with the Demon was an interesting swerve. Phillips plays Rose’s motives very close that we as readers get lead into some directions unexpectedly. There are no complaints about this what so ever. The pacing is very fast but never a situation of becoming lost in the story. The Confrontation between the two major characters here is excellent and changes everything moving forward. There’s a lot to enjoy with the writing here.

Favoccia turns up the dial with the action sequences here. The battle between Rose and The Demon flows at a very quick pace but reflects the moment perfectly. There is little time to stall during this exchange and every panel gives a serious moment to where the story should be. The flashback sequences didn’t hold back either as readers were treated to great insights when they popped up. There’s a unique vibe to this story and the art brings that to the forefront with ease.

Overall, Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #2 presents another solid issue building towards a combustible ending. Phillips and Favoccia raise the stakes with Rose’s return with a notable twist ending that is sure to have readers buzzing on NCBD! Don’t miss the chance to get this issue!

It has been an interesting few days for Valiant Entertainment but this blog is about the comics and not the business. That said, What a return for their original odd couple! ARCHER & ARMSTRONG FOREVER #4 by STEVE FOXE, MARCIO FIORITO, ALEX GUIMARAES & HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU has brought the pair back with an absolutely fun adventure. Let’s take a deep dive into the latest of this series, shall we?

The focus of the story thus far has been Armstrong, the merry immortal, suddenly losing his immortality while his best friend, Archer has made it a mission to save his friend. Through their globe-trotting journeys, the pair has found a possible solution in the Golden Apples of Idunn. The apples have been under the watchful eye of Frig, a creature that isn’t exactly willing to give them up. During this time, they are confronted by another creature known as The Maw. Now captured and awaiting their fate, it seems that the pair (along with Frig) has finally met their end.

This issue opens up with the Maw about to feast but is stopped by soldiers working for the Eccentric, a man who’s had a long standing grudge against Armstrong for….his “behavior” in the 1970’s. It’s tough to blame Armstrong though as he was considered a “living specimen” as a part of the collection. That time has built to the Eccentric’s plan of revenge: stealing Armstrong’s last chance at immortality. It’s such a classic super villain moment that readers can fully appreciate.

Will the Eccentric pull off his scheme? An unlikely event happens that gives this story a solid shot of exciting drama. That moment is balanced out with the usual comedic pace that readers have come to know and love. The big moment here though will definitely have readers talking. It’s a great twist that really changes the pair forever (no pun intended). There is much to enjoy about this issue.

Foxe has really captured the voice of Armstrong with his work on this series. His moments in this issue really jump off the page. From the timely flashbacks to his shining action of this issue, Foxe gives him many layers that will connect with the reading audience. The pacing is great for hitting all the key components. At no point did anything feel forced or rushed. A very cool addition to the storytelling is the description of Archer’s fighting style and moves. The conclusion is one that sets a new direction out for the pair that is a surprise take, but effective one. Its a game-changing moment for the pair and one not to miss!

Fiorito presents another great issue for readers with the art duties. The flashback sequences were a nice break in the overall plot. The big moment of the book was presented with all the sudden impact one would expect. Action spots connect for some noteworthy fragments in this issue, with one being very important as the catalyst to what redefines the duo. Readers are also left with a final page that will have some questions raised for the future of the pair, but a big win for the readers.

Overall, Archer & Armstrong Forever #4 concludes its’ first arc with a status quo finish that reshapes the pair’s future. Foxe & Fiorito deliver on another great issue re-introducing readers to one of the most legendary duos in comics. Hopefully, there’s many more stories to tell with this team on board. In the meantime, make sure to pick up a copy at the LCS this week!

We’re nearing the end to the Charge to 100 in the pages of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers books by Boom Studios. Power Rangers #22 by Ryan Parrott, Marco Renna, Walter Biamonte, Sharon Marino, Sara Antonellini and Ed Dukeshire bring fans to an extremely intense destination before the milestone #100! The build up has delivered and there are some BIG events here. Let’s not waste any more time ad jump into the events unfolding within these pages, shall we?

Power Rangers #22 (Legacy #99) - On Sale August 10th

The Omega Rangers have been dealt some unforeseen hands since declaring their warning to any evil doers around the universe. Zach and Trini have become reluctant parents of a fast aging alien names Journey. Jason has endured a major tragedy with the unexpected death of his mother. Factor in the introduction of Andros, a past ranger with a mysterious path, into their lives and it’s been a non-stop roller coaster of emotions to deal with, all while defending the universe.

With the events of last issue (and if you read “Countdown to Ruin”), Andros’ master plan had finally come to fruition . He has found a way to save his best friend Zhane and plans to extract some revenge along the way. Jason has got questions but he and Yale get to be first hand witness to Andros and Zhane destroying a Xurix space station! In shock, Jason tries to asses Zhane more and does he ever get more than he bargained for! The reveals are HUGE! The only thing bigger is an action done that will have readers doing an immediate double take!

The rest of the cast has their moments to spotlight as well during this issue. Journey and Keron Vrin have to find a way to defend Safehaven from the Followers of Vox. Zach and Trini get brought into the drama with Zhane and what a moment that is! On top of all this, we have a surprising action that ultimately leads to an exciting final page to guide readers to the milestone #100!

If you’re a new reader to this blog, I’m a big fan of Ryan Parrott’s work. Between the MMPR books and the incredible Rogue Sun, Parrott always delivers on great twists and fan moments (NOT to be considered Fan Service) that get readers telling each other “Hey! Did you see when (character) did (action). HOLY CRAP!” and so forth. There’s at least 2 moments of that in this book that a fellow press member and I had those reactions to. The pacing gives everyone time to shine and once Zhane’s plan unfolded, the impact could be felt thru the page. Another speculation point I’m making: for the amount of time focused on Journey, I’m almost banking on her playing a HUGE part in this story’s conclusion. Possibly a bigger role for her in the “Recharged Era.” Either way, it’s a great pen-ultimate issue before the big blockbuster in September!

Renna conveys a lot of emotional moments for two characters in particular during this issue. Both Jason and Andros have panels that exemplify the events unfolding. Andros, finally reunited with his best friend and the moments following carry weight along with Jason seeing what’s happening and trying to cease where the story is heading demonstrate these elements. There is a fair share of action sequences that Renna brings to life with ease. Events don’t stall for time catching the reader’s attention and getting the story to where it needs to be before such a huge issue forthcoming. The final panel is enough to generate some anticipation for this saga’s conclusion on its own.

Overall, Power Rangers #22 sets up the final chapter of the Charge to 100 with surprises and excitment fitting for the conclusion of this creative team’s stellar run. Parrott and Renna showcase excellent storytelling and art mixed with a few surprises that readers won’t be able to handle the wait to September to see. Make sure not to miss this issue at the LCS this week.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! On this edition, one of the podcast’s favorite books is making a triumphant return to readers with a whole new look! Pocus Hocus #4 by one of the ODPH’s favorite guests: Allen Dunford along with Will Radford, Brian Balando, Jasen Smith, & Dave Lentz are releasing their next chapter via Source Point Press! Allen returned to the podcast not too long ago to talk the move, the kickstarter (which hit goal 1st day and 10k by close?!) and much more. We were sent an advance copy for review and you know there was no chance of passing this up. Let’s not waste any more time & take a look at the latest adventures of everyone’s favorite soul selling magician, shall we?

Pocus Hocus #4

The story of Pocus goes like this: He’s a magician that is vying for his father’s approval and does one of the most rational things possible: sells his soul to a demon for powers. Unfortunately, Pocus never gets the chance to impress dad because he passes away before seeing him in action. Years later, Pocus is encountered by the demon whom he made the deal with cause said demon is in some trouble and needs Pocus to bail him out…or they’re both dead. Luckily, Pocus has an assistant named Emily who might be the only one smart enough to fix everything, that is if Pocus doesn’t screw everything up in the process.

This issue picks up where Pocus and Emily have now made their way into Hell, and after a warm greeting from some of the residents, have now made their way to meet up with the old friend: The Demon. Pocus unveils his plan to get his soul back and the Demon, well, isn’t exactly on board until Emily “convinces” him to reconsider. However, the Demon can’t help them out cause the soul is no longer in his possession. All the while, the longer the pair is in Hell, the more attention they are bringing upon themselves. Readers are in for a treat as Emily has done something that is a great equalizer on this playing field. A new recruit has joined the pair. Where does this lead them now? What figure makes a shocking return to Pocus’s world? And just where is Pocus’s soul now? Readers will have to check this issue out and find out!

Just when you don’t think Dunford & Radford can’t top the humor of the past issues, they find a way. The unlikely duo of Pocus and The Demon play off each other like a horrible married couple. The explanation of Pocus’s soul journey was a great laugh. It gives great balance to the horrible world they’re currently finding their way thru. Readers will also see another great conversation with Pocus and a familiar face late in the issue. The moment is big and goes they way long time readers might think. It doesn’t take anything away from its impact. This issue might actually be a stand-out for Emily as every action she takes has bigger meaning than the last. There’s a lot to enjoy from the writing.

I have no idea where Balando comes up with the imagery of the creatures here, but DAMN, he delivers! They are all horrific and disturbing…pretty much what you think Hell would look like. The Demon is unleashed here for a good segway in this story and those moments stand out. The new players also have grand introductions to the readers that can’t be missed. Another noteworthy portion of this book is how Jasen Smith uses colors. The only character in this issue still in Black and White is Pocus. More than likely, this is because he has no soul, but it’s a solid touch to factor in with the art. Another quality issue!

Overall, Pocus Hocus continues to be the perfect blend of humor and horror. Dunford and Radford mix in more “serious” moments with Pocus’s quest but it takes nothing away from the overall energy of what they’ve been creating over these past few issues. Balando’s art gives a superb perspective to the dark story with balanced fun moments that are sure to please. The “Charge To 100” continues in the right direction for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Universe for Boom Studios. Mighty Morphin’ #22 by Mat Groom, Moises Hidalgo, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire has a fun story going on focusing on one Ranger’s feelings towards legacy. After all the adventures the heroes have been thru, the uncertainty of the future has been looming. Let’s jump into this issue and see how this story plays out, shall we?

Mighty Morphin’ #22 - On Sale August 3rd

The issue opens up with Kimberly and Tommy stuck in an experimental dimension that has gone a bit haywire. Some rogues have now made their appearances in this landscape. None of which have any love loss with the pair of Rangers. Forced to battle, the pair is completely overwhelmed with Tommy left extremely hurt in the altercation. Kimberly gets Tommy to safety and also some divine intervention in the form of an emissary Ranger.

The conversation gives some much needed clarity on what Kimberly has been dealing with during this story. For better or worse, there is an understanding. With this information, Kimberly makes a call on how to handle her situation. Without Tommy to help, how will this play out? Readers will get that answer and a sense of where the future lies for not only the Pink Ranger but the heroes of Angel Grove as well. Excellent epilogue to cap this issue off as well.

Kimberly’s story these past two issues has been an enjoyable read. Groom breaks down the uncertainty of the future very well. We as readers often think that heroes will do this forever, but at the same time, it’s a question that will pop up from time to time in comics. The conversations Kimberly has during this issue brings that to the forefront. The resolution to those questions is one readers will be pleased with. Readers are also going to be excited to see how Kimberly finds a way to stand up to the rogues.

Hidalgo’s work is such a great compliment to the story. The facial expressions of Kimberly give an added weight to Groom’s writing. They will definitely connect with the readers about what direction she is heading into from these moments. With all the talking happening here, there’s also a healthy does of action to balance. Just wait until you see the two page spread before Kimberly addresses the rogues. The action has big momentum to it and provides for some memorable panels. There is much for readers to be pleased with involving this story.

Overall, Mighty Morphin’ #22 caps off a great story for one of the most well known rangers. Groom and Hidalgo present Kimberly’s questions of what to come with exceptional storytelling and art. As all roads head towards the “Charge To 100”, this story is a solid complement to whats to come. Make sure to keep an eye out for it at the LCS this week.

Lets check out the latest issue on the road to finishing this series, shall we?

A play is made by Mary to acquire something that could be the turning point in this entire struggle. It’s a risky move but appears to work in favor. With this weapon in hand, Mary presents it to one of he King Arthur’s and their court. In this exchange, Mary finds out the truth behind one of these so called “kings.” The reveal is very well done and the fallout becomes even better. All of this is relayed to Bridgette, who’s planning on strategy since the Christmas Day truce is over.

The heroes make their way to parliament Square to try undoing King Lear’s magic. The resolution of this is one for the ages. All the while, readers see an epic battle of two kings which ends in a very shocking matter! Does Bridgette’s plan go off without a hitch? In this world of magic , no bet is a safe bet. As readers will find out, no good deed goes unpunished as there’s a massive change no one saw coming…and a final one was ready for! Trust me when I saw, this issue doesn’t disappoint and there are so many crucial moments that need to be read rather than spoiled.

Gillen hits the gas pedal with moving into the final act with this issue. Bridgette ad Mary working together was one thing, but seeing the plan come to fruition was a wild ride. The backstory on one king was a great read and added to the tragic tale that can only come from this saga. In a game of kings, there can only be one. The storytelling hits on the marks. Even when she thinks she has the answers, Bridgette shows flaws that only add to the story overall. The final sequence of events deliver on the drama and no one is ready for that final page.

Mora continues to showcase why he’s arguably the best artist in comics right now. The action sequences hold nothing back. the attention to detail shines thru. The story of the one King is extremely well done and the imagery really conveys the emotions felt by its narrator. Seeing Lear make his move was another strong point to the book. When moments like this jump off pages, readers know that they have much to enjoy with the story. The final image of the book drives home the point the story is near the end. Expect much buzz from the fan base after reading this one.

Overall, Once and Future #28 sets the pace for ending one of the best stories in comics. Gillen and Mora present a heavy narrative will excellent story and art to send this comic into its’ final stand. Don’t miss picking this book up at the LCS this week! It’s some of the best creative work in the business for a reason.

BASILISK #10 (BOOM STUDIOS)

For this edition, we’re checking out the final story arc of one of the most intense reads at the LCS. Basilisk #10 by Cullen Bunn, Jonas Scharf, Alex Guimaraes & Ed Dukeshire for Boom Studios has been a wild read with the saga of a lone survivor against the fearsome supernatural five. The comics has been picking up steam with .some of the most brutal action sequences in comics. The major players are setting up for the ultimate encounter. Let’s see how the latest chapter is taking readers towards the final stand of the Chimera, shall we?

This issue kicks off with an eerie origin story for Vanessa, the lead of the Chimera. It’s a very in your face opening that results into present time with Vanessa waking up in a colony of disciples. The group appears to be preparing on unleashing a healthy Vanessa onto the world after her last battle with Hannah.

Meanwhile, Hannah is still in a hospital from her last battle. She begins to think back to her family, who were original victims to the Chimera. Now, Hannah is alone after cutting ties with Regan, the lone defector of the Chimera. Speaking of Regan, she is approached by Barret and his Chimera followers. After an order was subtly given, Barret’s followers invade the hospital and start killing everyone in sight looking for Hannah. The scene’s pull no punches as Hannah fights to survive.

Just when readers think they’re going to have this story figured out, The major players left are now flipped in direction in what will be one of the craziest endings in recent memory. The long time readers will not be ready for what the final page means. The game has now changed. The direction of the book is now set. All bets are off for what’s coming.

Bunn is really setting the table for the final showdown here. Hannah and Vanessa’s collision course has been very engaging to readers to see how it will all unfold. Vanessa has had a “fall from Grace” ordeal in relearning about her past, On the other side of the coin, Hannah has come to terms that ending the Chimera once and for all might cost her everything, but the ends justify the means. The role players are adding to the intensity of the moments while not stealing anything away from the inevitable end. The mood is dire, and the future is bleak. Could this story end any other way. Great storytelling.

Scharf continues to deliver some of the most brutal scenes with the violence in this issue. The raid of the hospital is intense and graphic. Readers see how fanatic the Chimera followers have turned. Hannah’s fight to survive shows how far of a character growth she’s gone thru. Readers also get a grim look at Vanessa’s beginnings with the flashback sequence to open the book. The shift from grey/blue to light/brown was a great touch to illustrate the points. Very well done.

Overall, Basilisk #10 delivers on the calm and the violence. It doesn’t hold back from the brutality of its story but does offer some quiet moments before all hell breaks loose. Bunn and Scharf bring the story to a fever pitch before lighting the ending match. You simply can’t miss this comic at the LCS.

Image Comics & Black Market Narrative are hitting the comic shops with one of the most anticipated comics of the year on August 3rd! The Dead Lucky #1 by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO and BECCA CAREY introduces readers to the latest character entering into one of the most exciting and creative universes in comics today: the “The Massive-Verse” (home to Rogue Sun, Inferno Girl Red and the 2022 Eisner Award Nominee for Best New Series: Radiant Black).

The Dead Lucky has been on the radar from a feature in the “SuperMassive” comic in February 2022. Since then, the hype has been building to a fever pitch. The ODPH (along with Tom Craven from Off The Cuff Gaming/That Hashtag Show) talked to Melissa Flores about this book a few weeks back. #DeadLuckyDay is finally here and the issue is now out in stores. Let’s take a deeper dive into the debut and break this book down, shall we?

The Dead Lucky #1 - On Sale August 3rd

The Dead Lucky centers around a character by the name of Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka Bibi. Bibi is an honorably discharged veteran who has returning to civilian life after serving in Afghanistan. The issue opens up with Bibi talking to a therapist. Bibi is now returning to her home of San Francisco which both her and her city are drastically changed from the time she left.

San Francisco is now under the “protective” eye of Morrow, a tech corporation that is trying to make the city into a “city of tomorrow.” Morrow has a unique way of presenting their case with “Guardian” robots patrolling the city. One area of interest is Bibi’s family’s restaurant, Chi-Mexi-Q located in Chinatown. Morrow representatives allude to Bibi’s family if they don’t comply with Morrow’s vision of the city (and relocate) then they would have no protection from the Salvation Gang.

Morrow claims they are domestic terrorists. The Salvation Gang claim to be ending Morrow’s reign. With their power struggle right in her hometown, Bibi gets involved (with a few tricks up her sleeves as well as a bit of help as seen below). How does this altercation end up? What is Morrow really up to? What about the Salvation Gang? and THAT LAST PAGE! Readers will have much to enjoyably discuss after reading this excellent first issue.

What a fantastic read! Flores does an impressive job introducing readers to Bibi and her city of San Francisco. Opening the issue with seeing how Bibi is handling her mental health post service (PTSD and Survivor’s Guilt) via therapy was a strong way to connect readers to her character. This style of storytelling also stands out when Bibi is “talking” to the reader right after her initial encounter with Morrow (see “I’m Not a soldier…” page for example). Another noteworthy element of this issue is seeing the dynamic of San Francisco. The city is a character itself, with a distinctiveness all its own. Morrow’s vision of tomorrow vs. the people refusing to change is a conflict to keep an eye on. Factor in the Salvation Gang’s role and there are many moving parts involved. Flores pulls this off easily balancing the major players while allowing Bibi to have her moments with her supporting cast and becoming a reluctant hero in the process.

Carlomagno and Iacono crush the art duties for a dynamic debut issue. The city of San Francisco has a very undeniable feel to it. Meshing the world of tech into the landscape here feels more organic than readers might think. The action sequences capture the intensity of the moments. However, Carlomagno’s strengths this issue has to be the personal moments with Bibi and her supporting cast. The talks with Bibi and her therapist to the Morrow representative discussing the “business deal” with Bibi’s parents jump out as fragments of the story that translate to the reader this isn’t an ordinary super hero comic. There is a lot to be excited about for fans, especially with a jaw-dropping last page.

Overall, The Massive-Verse has a huge addition on their hands that readers simply can’t miss! Flores, Carlomagno, Iacono and Carey present an engaging lead character and her world with spectacular storytelling and phenomenal art. The Dead Lucky #1 debuts with a must-read issue that fans simply won’t be able to put down. Make your way to the local comic shop on #DeadLuckyDay (August 3rd.) and get this comic! Highly recommended!
