*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

A play is made by Mary to acquire something that could be the turning point in this entire struggle. It’s a risky move but appears to work in favor. With this weapon in hand, Mary presents it to one of he King Arthur’s and their court. In this exchange, Mary finds out the truth behind one of these so called “kings.” The reveal is very well done and the fallout becomes even better. All of this is relayed to Bridgette, who’s planning on strategy since the Christmas Day truce is over.

The heroes make their way to parliament Square to try undoing King Lear’s magic. The resolution of this is one for the ages. All the while, readers see an epic battle of two kings which ends in a very shocking matter! Does Bridgette’s plan go off without a hitch? In this world of magic , no bet is a safe bet. As readers will find out, no good deed goes unpunished as there’s a massive change no one saw coming…and a final one was ready for! Trust me when I saw, this issue doesn’t disappoint and there are so many crucial moments that need to be read rather than spoiled.

Gillen hits the gas pedal with moving into the final act with this issue. Bridgette ad Mary working together was one thing, but seeing the plan come to fruition was a wild ride. The backstory on one king was a great read and added to the tragic tale that can only come from this saga. In a game of kings, there can only be one. The storytelling hits on the marks. Even when she thinks she has the answers, Bridgette shows flaws that only add to the story overall. The final sequence of events deliver on the drama and no one is ready for that final page.

Mora continues to showcase why he’s arguably the best artist in comics right now. The action sequences hold nothing back. the attention to detail shines thru. The story of the one King is extremely well done and the imagery really conveys the emotions felt by its narrator. Seeing Lear make his move was another strong point to the book. When moments like this jump off pages, readers know that they have much to enjoy with the story. The final image of the book drives home the point the story is near the end. Expect much buzz from the fan base after reading this one.

THE DEAD LUCKY #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog section to the ODPH podcast! Image Comics & Black Market Narrative are hitting the comic shops with one of the most anticipated comics of the year on August 3rd! The Dead Lucky #1 by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO and BECCA CAREY introduces readers to the latest character entering into one of the most exciting and creative universes in comics today: the “The Massive-Verse” (home to Rogue Sun, Inferno Girl Red and the 2022 Eisner Award Nominee for Best New Series: Radiant Black).

The Dead Lucky has been on the radar from a feature in the “SuperMassive” comic in February 2022. Since then, the hype has been building to a fever pitch. The ODPH (along with Tom Craven from Off The Cuff Gaming/That Hashtag Show) talked to Melissa Flores about this book a few weeks back. #DeadLuckyDay is finally here and the issue is now out in stores. Let’s take a deeper dive into the debut and break this book down, shall we?

The Dead Lucky #1 - On Sale August 3rd

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Dead Lucky centers around a character by the name of Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka Bibi. Bibi is an honorably discharged veteran who has returning to civilian life after serving in Afghanistan. The issue opens up with Bibi talking to a therapist. Bibi is now returning to her home of San Francisco which both her and her city are drastically changed from the time she left.

San Francisco is now under the “protective” eye of Morrow, a tech corporation that is trying to make the city into a “city of tomorrow.” Morrow has a unique way of presenting their case with “Guardian” robots patrolling the city. One area of interest is Bibi’s family’s restaurant, Chi-Mexi-Q located in Chinatown. Morrow representatives allude to Bibi’s family if they don’t comply with Morrow’s vision of the city (and relocate) then they would have no protection from the Salvation Gang.

Morrow claims they are domestic terrorists. The Salvation Gang claim to be ending Morrow’s reign. With their power struggle right in her hometown, Bibi gets involved (with a few tricks up her sleeves as well as a bit of help as seen below). How does this altercation end up? What is Morrow really up to? What about the Salvation Gang? and THAT LAST PAGE! Readers will have much to enjoyably discuss after reading this excellent first issue.

What a fantastic read! Flores does an impressive job introducing readers to Bibi and her city of San Francisco. Opening the issue with seeing how Bibi is handling her mental health post service (PTSD and Survivor’s Guilt) via therapy was a strong way to connect readers to her character. This style of storytelling also stands out when Bibi is “talking” to the reader right after her initial encounter with Morrow (see “I’m Not a soldier…” page for example). Another noteworthy element of this issue is seeing the dynamic of San Francisco. The city is a character itself, with a distinctiveness all its own. Morrow’s vision of tomorrow vs. the people refusing to change is a conflict to keep an eye on. Factor in the Salvation Gang’s role and there are many moving parts involved. Flores pulls this off easily balancing the major players while allowing Bibi to have her moments with her supporting cast and becoming a reluctant hero in the process.

Carlomagno and Iacono crush the art duties for a dynamic debut issue. The city of San Francisco has a very undeniable feel to it. Meshing the world of tech into the landscape here feels more organic than readers might think. The action sequences capture the intensity of the moments. However, Carlomagno’s strengths this issue has to be the personal moments with Bibi and her supporting cast. The talks with Bibi and her therapist to the Morrow representative discussing the “business deal” with Bibi’s parents jump out as fragments of the story that translate to the reader this isn’t an ordinary super hero comic. There is a lot to be excited about for fans, especially with a jaw-dropping last page.

Tynion really outdoes himself with this issue. With two stories happening here, it could be easy to lose the impact of both. However, that’s not the case here. Erica’s case speeds up dramatically with a break in the case unexpected. The panels feel intense as Erica races to try saving Gabi. This could have been the sole story being told here, but it’s overshadowed by the actions of Cutter. Tynion really hits all the emotions with the fallout from Cutter’s first salvo against Erica. Readers are going to be heartbroken at the powerful conversation had with Erica surrounding these events. It truly showcase’s Tynion’s strengths as a writer.

Not to be overlooked, Dell’edera’s art sets the perfect background to the emotional issues. From the facial reactions of Cutter to the frantic attempt of Erica to save Gabi, the art showcases the moments perfectly to compliment the gravity of the moments. Where Dell’edera’s art truly shines in this issue is Erica’s reaction to what Cutter has done. Readers will literally be feeling the sequence of events and can’t help but feel sympathy for what’s happened to our lead character here.

Last readers saw Boniface, he was challenged with stopping the Deadside from invading into the realm of the living. In a dramatic turn of events, the conclusion of the “DeadSide War” resulted into Persephone, a blight who has now crossed over into the land of the living. With this powerful of a being now on Earth, Shadowman has taken her under his wing on his fight against evil. Highly recommend reading the past arcs to enhance what’s going on in BoS, but it’s not required for new readers.

This issue opens up with the traditional Valiant opening intros for new readers. The Tarot Card style breakdown is perfect for new readers jumping in. Top notch work here.

The story starts off in a carnival in Vernon Commons, Illinois. What starts out as a fun filled night of happiness quickly shifts into a violent rampage by supernatrural monsters. Luckily, Shadowman and Persephone join the fight to save the innocents’ lives. Persephone lets loose on her powers, unlocking the horrors of the Deadside but she’s still learning on controlling them. After dispersing of the creatures, the pair is joined by 2 other fan-favorites: PUNK MAMBO & DR. MIRAGE! After catching up with how everyones’ in the same place, Shadowman reveals a clue to this carnage. During the melee, one of the creatures drops a hint to their actions: The Dark Feast as proclaimed in the Book Of Shadows. Mambo responds by mentioning that once she caught wind of trouble, she called some favors: as in The ETERNAL WARRIOR!

Longtime Valiant readers will be excited to see one of the most bad-ass characters return as he should: fighting monsters! After disposing of the creatures, he is confronted by who appear to be the “chef” of the Dark Feats: Exarch Fane! The pair are old acquaintances and a battle begins anew! Readers are left with a final image that can’t help to make them amped up to see issue #2 immediately.

If you’re a new reader to the blog, first and foremost, Thank you for reading. Secondly, I’m a BIG Cullen Bunn fan and think he does fantastic work. Bunn gave a cool new energy to Shadowman during his solo run and those themes carry over to this book. Shadowman is the reluctant loner who now is burdened to watch Persephone while also trusting others to assist with the Supernatural. Bunn handles this perfectly as the dialogue is showcasing the hesitation with the others while acting like a surrogate parent with Persephone, who is very new to the ways of human emotions. The slow burn build with the Eternal Warrior fits as being an elder of the Valiant Universe, chances are he’s seen most everything. Bringing back an old enemy but with new powers adds a nice spin to the story. How this reluctant team can co-exist is anyone’s guess but I’m locked in for the ride.

Cifuentes brings to life some incredible action sequences throughout this issue. Both fights with Shadowman & Eternal Warrior vs the creatures hold nothing back. Brutal and to the point of how dangerous the threat can be. Cifuentes also handles the emotion of the people of the carnival and Persephone extremely well. It’s a minor layer of the story but does connect the reader to the overall theme. This issue is consistently balanced in is moments and is sure to please the readers.

Bunn and Cifuentes deliver on taking some of the Valiant Finest along with the readers into another realm of action and magic that simply can not be missed. Make a point to get this book (along with Shadowman 1-8 by Bunn) at the LCS! Highly recommended.

HOUSE OF SLAUGHTER #7 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! For this edition, we’re looking at the latest issue of a series spinning out of the pages of Something Is Killing the Children. House Of Slaughter #7 by James Tynion, Sam Johns, Letizia Cadonici, Francesco Segala, Andworld Design and Werther Dell’edera has just begun a new arc diving into a story concerning the red masks from the Order of St. George. In a change of pace, Edwin Slaughter was selected to investigate a scene at a campsite. This is new territory for a red mask so let’s tag along and see where this latest issue takes us, shall we?

The story picks up with Edwin Slaughter’s initial investigation of a mysterious campsite. After the first encounter, he sails away to use his unique perspective to cypher what is happening. While drifting at sea, Edwin starts talking to Hermes, his brush companion about what could possibly be next. Edwin (mentally) paints the picture of what their next plan of action should be. All the while, Hermes is becoming more impatient as time passes by.

Edwin starts breaking down a story of a family who drowned in a flood. When the story escalates, Hermes stops the story. As they make their way back to the island from sea, it appears the pair might be lost. Edwin breaks down where they are using the stars. Readers start noticing how Edwin sees the world is vastly different than most. From this, will the pair make it to shore? Did Edwin get more clues on what is killing people? What will he do with the information? There is a lot of questions that arise that readers will get some answers and theories to before closing this issue.

This issue really takes a deeper look at how Edwin sees the world. It’s a very unique take as his perception is giving this story something fresh in a character. Using Hermes as a balance to his visions has been a solid take. For being a red/scarlett mask with no real experience, Edwin is holding his own . Readers are seeing the slow build for something big to happen. The payoff should be excellent.

The art has a distinct look that makes Edwin’s world pop off the pages. The conversation with Hermes comes off “normal” as it possibly can be. The flashback sequence to the story he tells Hermes is well done. It captures the terror and fear of that moment perfectly. Readers will also enjoy the small foreshadowing of Edwin’s vision being correct in its’ assumptions. Without spoiling anything, there’s a 2 page spread late that hits the mark without revealing everything. Solid work all around.

This book is so damn entertaining. Foxe writes well placed humor throughout this comic. The unlikely pair’s personalities shine thru yet again. The story is over the top fun and carries that energy throughouthe book. Even when they face off against Maw, it never looses that cool “odd Couple” vibe which makes this book great. Frig will be a fan favorite when it’s all said and done. She fits in perfectly with the pair. Hopefully this isn’t the last story we see her in. Readers have a lot to enjoy with the writing here.

On the art side, Fiorito takes readers on a great trio with this issue. From the fight with Frig to the wee spent in the Faraway, each moment feels different and pushes the story along at a great pace. the little moments of humor drawn in works well . Frig’s origin panels are prime example of that. No spoilers here, but I did have a good laugh seeing some “visitors” on one in particular. Maw’s appearance shifted the tone of the book and rightfully so. I’m very curious to see how that part of the story plays out.

BASILISK #9 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! We’re finally returning to the battle of the Chimera in the return issue of Basilsk by Boom Studios! Basilisk #9 by Cullen Bunn, Jonas Scharf, Alex Guimaraes & Ed Dukeshire kicks off the final chapter of this horror comic, where a group of individuals known as the Chimera are on a murderous spree with one lone survivor trying to stop them. The series has been an absolutely violent and fantastic read with many twists along the way. Entering the final stretch, let’s see where this book is heading, shall we?

ICYMI: The Chimera is a murderous group who have been leaving death and destruction in their wake, while leaving a survivor from the attack to speak their legend. In one of those cases, someone has made it their mission to stop them once and for all. The hunters have become the hunted while the two forces have escalated things over this run. After the last issue, there is much fallout for the two forces of this story. This issue opens up with Vanessa, leader of the Chimera having a flashback to a moment growing up. This gives a bit of insight to how she became one of the Chimera, who’s powers are based off the five senses. Now it appears she has returned back to the beginning of everything. It’s an interesting part of the story with a lot more room to grow on. Vanessa’s actions of late have come back to haunt her to a degree.

On the other side, Hannah, the lone survivor of a Chimera attack, has her own flashback while waking up in a hospital. Regan, the Chimera defector and Hannah’s ally, is outside watching and listening. Their relationship takes a unique twist during this issue. It’s one readers will not be super surprised (and this isn’t a slight. It makes sense for the characters involved) at but its impact still hits very solid. The final sequence of events is another great surprise and one that could change the fate of the series moving forward.

Bunn is crafting a truly intense story within these pages for the final chapter. Last issue was a brutal one where Vanessa and Hannah both were left in bad condition for various reasons. This issue does a subtle reintroduction to these two focal characters. New readers might be a bit confused in certain areas but can pick up quick with talking the readers back thru their pasts. The most stand-out moment was the interaction between Regan and Hannah. Their “frienemy” status has been taken up a notch with a huge cliffhanger ending that I feel will have a drastic effect on this book’s conclusion.

Scharf delivers on the emotional toll from the series in this issue. This point rises to the front when dealing with Hannah and Regan this issue. Readers will easily connect with Hannah’s emotional reaction to those scenes. Vanessa’s reactions also stand out this issue as well. there isn’t a ton of fighting and action here, but the weight of the previous battles weigh heavy on the characters involved. Solid final panel to close out the latest chapter on.

The book has taken some great twists but it’s time for this chapter to end. Let’s see how this final chapter of the story plays out, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story of Lis, Lu and Leco has been an exciting one to read. Based in the streets of San Paulo, While standing up for a simple vendor on the street, the trio takes the phone of a corrupt policeman named Noronha. Unknown to them is that phone has secrets of plans to influence an upcoming election, including taking out an opposing candidate in Neto. With that information now open to the people, the powers that be are doing all they can to stop the three and keep their plans in place. A big factor to fixing this mess has been bringing in Zé Fofinho, a dangerous man who will do anything to clean up this mess. From killing Noronha to torturing Leco, Zé Fofinho will stop at nothing to end this. The three are now on the run and time is running out. Can they get the information to the right people and stop the election from being tampered with?

The final chapter begins with a flashback of Zé Fofinho in 1979. It’s another showcase of how evil this man truly is. Once sped up to present time (2018), Zé Fofinho is hot on pursuit of the three after the daring rescue of Leco last issue. Meanwhile, the three are working with a reporter by the name of Roque Alves to find out Zé Fofinho’s identity. From here, the pace really speeds up into a frantic action sequence as the walls close in on the 3 when trouble arrives at their front door….literally. When it’s settled, readers get the big showdown between Zé Fofinho and our heroes that has been building since the beginning. How does all this play out? trust me when I say this: readers will have a decisive conclusion to this story and one that they will want to immediately read again.

Scavone puts a well placed conclusion in place with this issue. The character of Zé Fofinho has been one that’s commanded the panels that he’s been in with his presence. The chess match that has been going on these past issues has been exciting to read. Lis has been the voice of the voiceless for this series and showed that never-back-down attitude even in the face of certain danger. Never more so does this come t the fore front than during the standoff. Readers will be excited to see how this plays out. The ending is very fitting for where the story was heading. In a world that could always use some courage, this story showed that courage can come from unexpected places and still pack a much needed impact when needed.

Cruz’s art was spectacular for this finale. The action sequences when the fight came to the front door was fun and creative to witness. During this story, it’s easy to forget that the heroes are not trained or having any super powers. They’re ordinary people with a will to help make change. The fights make perfect sense and the standoff proves to deliver the intensity of the moment. It’s fluid to the pacing. Nothing feels rushed and plays out very natural to the story. Great final panel to close this chapter out on.

BRZRKR #9 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this edition, we’re nearing the end of a very intriguing series from Boom Studios. BRZRKR #9 by Keanu Reeves (yes, THAT Keanu Reeves), Matt Kindt, Ron Garney, Bill Crabtree and Clem Robins has been an exciting read into the life of B, a half man/half god and his search to find an end to his immortal life. The story has gone in a few different directions than one would expect but it’s been a solid read each time out. Let’s check out where the latest chapter is taking us this time, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Last issue showed how B went missing from the experiments of Dr. Caudwell, who revealed his evil mater plan. Where readers jump in, it appears as B has finally connected with his father on a whole other realm. However that reunion is cut short as B is pulled back to Earth without a ton of answers he was looking for. Is anyone really prepared for how B handles this moment? Meanwhile, Diana, B’s only “friend” in the government agency working with him is in a containment tank after being exposed to energy radiating from an explosion involving B.

Once B returns, readers get a very blunt, brutal, in your face look at what B is capable of. How do you stop an unstoppable force? That is the question to ask during these moments. This pleases Caudwell, who is watching all these events and enjoying what he’s seeing. However, an X factor is thrown into the mix that might derail everything. Readers are left with a very puzzling last panel to ponder over.

There’s much to talk about with this issue. Reeves & Kindt unleash B in one of the most primal and violent ways readers will ever see in a fight. To drive the point of how intensely important learning B’s secret to clone/adapt was well played. Readers fully get why Caudwell is happy to see the “progress” unfold in this issue. The short family reunion served its’ purpose to light the match known as B’s rage. Once B thinks he will finally get some answers, they are denied once again and he takes that out on anyone in sight. The biggest question is Diana’s involvement in this issue which readers will see that unfold next time.

Garney delivers some of the most violent action you will read in a comic within these pages. B unleashed is a terrifying image to witness and readers get a front row seat for that. There is nothing held back about it. An immortal killing machine unleashed. period. The conversation with ‘dad” worked well here as well, as it drove home B’s anger when he returned to Earth. That last sequence of events does raise some questions and Garney crafts those moments to really have readers talking.

Overall, BRZRKR #9 sets the final arc off with an intense kick in the teeth. The creative team show B is at his most brutal withan ending that draws up more questions than answers (and that’s not a bad thing). Make sure to check this series out at the LCS this week. Big things are happening towards the conclusion.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue kicks off with a flashback sequence to the gruesome murders that started this story arc. readers get their first glance at who the culprit is behind this mess. The moment hits very hard as readers now put a visual to what happened on that day. Gabi, the lone witness to the monster, returns to the scene of the crime and runs into a unexpected ally.

Meanwhile, Riqui, a bartender that has been watching over Gabi since the killings, has a face to face with Erica Slaughter at the bar. Erica’s re-emergence has been attracting much attention and this interaction tells much of where the story is heading. A small town rocked by a horrific moment doesn’t know how to handle it. Now walks in someone asking questions and claiming to help? This conversation gives a true glimpse of the temp in the small town emotion. Factor in that Erica’s problems do not end with solving this case. There’s other forces working against her that make some more ground during this issue. Readers will have much to process with this issue.

Tynion continues the slow burn approach to this story and it’s working flawlessly. Erica’s investigation is hitting the problems as one would expect. It’s not a one-and-done ordeal. Erica has to deal with a town scared and fearful of whats happening. Her world is definitely not the same one these people live in. The conversation between Riqui and Erica spotlights this. The other strong part of this book is Erica’s growing problem of the House of Cutter. There’s a great recap segment as Erica’ story is being told to Cutter as a small intro for new readers. The dynamic of Cutter is very engaging. What is eventually going to become a HUGE issue for Erica is exciting to see develop for readers.

Dell’edera presents powerful imagery in unveiling the monster behind this story. The pages speak volumes while only showing the monster in 4 panels. There is nothing over the top with the art, but it’s staged to where the readers will develop their own conclusions of the flashback moments. Erica and Cutter also have distinct character moments in this book as well. Cutter’s story progresses enough to have readers guessing how badly does the House want her eliminated to bring in someone of her caliber?

Overall, SIKTC #24 has much within these pages to be excited to pick up at the comic shop. The creative team paint this disturbing world with excellent storytelling and art. After catching up with her supervisor Adira, Jessica now becomes further in isolation in dealing with the cross over. Never one to sit idle, Jessica schemes a way to figure a way out of this mystery. Phillips delivers on a solid follow-up to the debut issue. Jessica’s story is one that readers are only getting small glimpses of, but yet, there’s enough to be fully locked in on where the story is going. The dynamic she has with her fellow reapers is fun and engaging. Once the story shifts gears to her plan of solving her mysterious situation, readers get hit with some impactful pages later in the story. The start of Death’s part in the comic is one that made a serious impact and nothing good can come from it.

Flaviano crushes it on art duties yet again. From the Day of The Dead part to when Jessica and her team try their plan, panels are popping off the pages. I’ve become a big fan of how music is incorporated in this book. Last issue was Blue Oyster Cult, This issue was The Doors. Visualizing the lyrics gives another feel to what readers are seeing. It looks fresh and stands out. Readers are going to really savor what they’re getting out of this comic. There is much to enjoy.

The story picks up where Kay and Mona are rescued by the police in the morning after spending the night in an abandon house. However, a new character enters the story that might change everything. William Quilliam, a money broker who oversees the property shows up. At first, it seems as he’s on the up and up, but once readers see a few moments later, there are some red flags raised via his facial expression.

From here, Kay struggles to deal with Mona being turned over to social services. Once she goes back to find Mona, there is more information revealed that proves she is anything but ordinary. From here, the pair begin to try figuring out what has happened. Unfortunately for them, other forces are at play. can the pair survive long enough to figure out this mystery? Diggle continues to build off off a soild debut with this issue. Kay’s story begins to shift gears as she becomes more connected with Mona. Seeing how their story has grown in such a short time has been a big win for this series. The addition of Quilliam adds another dynamic to this book. It’s very early in this story to figure out everything about him but there’s enough in this issue to make readers keep focused on him as this book progresses. Very good closing sequence to end the issue on.

Brokenshire does another fantastic job on bringing this world to life. Balancing out the grounded reality with the supernatural elements i presented with no problems. When the mystic moments happen, they’re big events. When the quieter conversation happen, they still translate to the reader as impactful. Readers are in for a real treat with the imagery they will see in this issue. Very cool final panels to close out on.

The issue jumps in where the team is crashing a gala thrown by King Veiron in the Lion Galaxy. They need to provide a distraction to steal a command center for Earth. Sounds simple enough, right? Due to some quick thinking by Alpha, the heroes get some time but some interpersonal talk between Rangers might delay the goal from being hit. Like I said…..sounds simple enough stealing an entire command center under everyone’s nose, right?

Meanwhile on Earth, Rocky (Red Ranger) and Matt (Green Ranger) are holding the line against King Aradon best they can, but is it enough? There are some great character moments between the pair. It’s a small break between the action but one that plays a big role in this issue. How does this all end up for the heroes? Will they finally secure a command center? Will there be an Earth left to call home if/when they do? Readers will also get hit with a strong final panel that effects both MMPR books by Boom.

Groom balances out all the multiple stories extremely well. With such a big cast, no one felt like they were missing any time in this issue. Alpha had some panel stealing moments while the talk between Kim and Adam feels like there’s more to come with the questions they were bringing up. Meanwhile, the moments of King Aradon facing off with Rocky and Matt delivered on the most memorable panels of the book. Hearing Matt’s talk with Rocky felt organic and much needed for a ranger whose confidence was shaken. There is much to enjoy from this latest.

Hidalgo crafts some excellent fight sequences. Aradon’s battle really stood out. Hidalgo also delivers on the emotion with the talk with Matt and Rocky as well as Adam and Kim. Even though these weren’t big action panels, the emphasis on the discussion shines thru here. Emotions weigh heavy heading into the closing of this issue but if you read Power Rangers #19, the ending is very familiar but doesn’t lack the heartbreaking feeling when you see the panel.

Side note: Nobody does a recap page like Valiant Entertainment. Huge fan of their quick recaps.

Last Issue, Armstrong suffered an injury from an attack that our favorite immortal wasn’t healing from. Seeing that this might be the end of the road, Archer, the skilled peaceful weapon who is Armstrong’s best friend, is desperately trying to solve this mystery. Archer has made a list of possible resources to find Armstrong immorality. Their first outing goes as well….as you would think. The rest of the issue keeps the pair on saga after saga checking off the list.

Will the pair find success? That’s the question being asked. There’s also forces working against them (per last issue) that are following them along the way. How does this factor into Archer’s plans? Can Armstrong survive with what his bestie has planned? It’s such a fun read that trust me, breaking it down any further would take away all the excitement.

What an absolutely fun issue. Foxe delivers on bringing the laughs and action within this issue. Being the optimist, Archer trying to save his friend at all costs. His upbeat demeanor is only matched by Armstrong’s “whatever’ attitude. It’s a great blend of personalities that gives this book such good moments. The moments on Archer’s list are entertaining to say the least. It is never a dull moment with this pair. Readers will have much to enjoy within these pages.

Fiorito does a great job making each stop on Archer’s list stand out and feel different. The Australia stop had me actually laugh out loud when I read the panel. Another solid showing of Archer’s fighting skills in this issue as well. It’s a nice touch when the description is added to explain what he’s doing when it’s a noteworthy move/strike. Armstrong’s reactions to this chase is another strong point of the issue. Nice set-up for next issue with the final panel shot.

Foxe plays up to the pair’s “odd couple” strengths with the writing while Fiorito creates some memorable moments while equalizing the funny and the fighting. There is no reason this book shouldn’t be in your pull list each month. None. Make sure to get your copy at the local comic shops this week.

THE BOYS (SEASON 3 - AMAZON STUDIOS/PRIME VIDEO)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. However for this edition, we’re reviewing a TV series based off an incredible comic series from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The Boys from Amazon Studios returns to Prime Video with the first 3 episode debuting on June 3rd. I was fortunate to be allowed an early screening of the new season so here are my SPOILER FREE takes from the Boys season 3

The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd)

In case you’re new to this franchise, “The Boys” takes a different look at superheroes than you normally see. “The Seven” are the world’s greatest heroes sponsored by Vought, a corporation that isn’t anything that it seems. Think “Justice League” meets “Youngblood” from Rob Liefeld’s debut book for Image Comics in the 90’s. These “heroes” live and die by public image and popularity ratings. Vought goes to immense measures to cover up their power abuses and trust me, over 2 seasons, there has been plenty.

The Seven started the series with a lineup comprised of Homelander (played by Antony Starr), Starlight (Erin Moriarty), Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott ), Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell), A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), The Deep (Chace Crawford) & Translucent.

Almost a mirror image of the DC Comics’ iconic Justice League Original 7 Lineup:

Homelander = Superman

Black Noir = Batman

Queen Maeve = Wonder Woman

A-Train = The Flash

The Deep = Aquaman

Translucent = Martian Manhunter

Starlight = Green Lantern

but these individuals are VASTLY different than the DC counterparts.

Opposing all that they are is “The Boys”, led by Karl Urban - Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), Mother's Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capone) & Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara). This group has one simple mission: take down the Seven and Vought at any costs.

Homelander (Antony Starr)

The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd)

During this ongoing struggle, viewers have seen members of the Seven killed, disgraced and replaced after being ousted. Some were more morally challenged (Looking at you Stormfront ) and ultimately defeated! Viewers have also seen Butcher and Hughie pushed and forced to grow together whether they were ready or not. Factor in the Romeo & Juliet style romance between Starlight and Hughie and this show has won fans over with its’ over the top moments balanced out with brilliant character building that challenge what we know of “super heroes”.

Season 3 picks up a year later from the events of Season 2. The Boys have now gone legit as they now work for a government agency. Instead of Butcher calling the shots, they now have to answer to Hughie who oversees the group for the agency. On the other side of the fight, Homelander is dealing with his public embarrassment being connected to the defeated Stormfront and what she truly was. With public opinion weighing so much, the cracks of Homelander’s psyche appear to show through more and more. The ceasefire that has been establish since the fallout of season 2 slowly starts to fade away as old habits die hard between the hated enemies.

Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd) Photo Courtesy of Prime Video ( Amazon Studios )

Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles)

The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd)

The big X-Factor in their latest conflict is Butcher has now acquired something that grants powers for 24hrs. Where the group’s whole identity has been based around taking the Supes down since power in the wrong hands is dangerous has now been thrown right back in their faces. What is Butcher going to do with “an even playing field” as he said for the first time during this ordeal. However, that’s not the only new element thrown into this highly combustible mix.

Season 3 also leads to an addition to this world of heroes: Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles). Soldier Boy was the first superhero whose legacy is legendary. The easiest comparison is Marvel Comics’ Captain America, but this isn’t your normal leader of the Avengers. When one of history’s most legendary “good guys” returns to the world, how will he fare in this battle? The stakes have never been as high as they are this season. Can Butcher finally defeat Homelander or will the flagship member of the Seven continue to be the thorn in the sides of both the Seven and The Boys?

Being a Spoiler free review, trust me when I say that this season lives up to the standards set forth by the previous seasons. The moral questions of Super Heroes doesn’t stray but evolves within these eight episodes. For being a short season in comparison to other shows, “The Boys” waste no time getting into a rhythm with very little cases of “filler” scenes. This is largely due to the fantastic acting on the show.

Antony Starr deserves to be in all award contention for his portrayal this season. Starr brought out the truly broken character of Homelander. While last season focused more on him trying to balance connecting to his son and being manipulated by Stormfront, Starr really sinks his teeth into showcasing the fall from grace from America’s “favorite” superhero after being publicly disgraced. How does someone, let alone one with his powers, come back to win a public over that has clearly left him broken? Viewers will be locked into each episode to witness how this all unfolds.

Not to be outdone, Moriarty steals scenes battling Homelander’s antagonizing of her character. There’s also some great moments with Jack Quaid showing the struggle of trying to have a relationship with someone NOT a Supe and how that affects their lives. Moriarty & Quaid have fantastic chemistry on screen and gives a small sense of realism to this wild world they live in. Extravagant might be the perfect word to describe this world because there are moments that will leave viewers speechless and one episode in particular which pays homage to one of the most notorious stories in the Boys comics.

Ackles also shines thru this season as the hero the world “thinks” they know. His mannerisms match what you would expect from someone of Soldier Boy’s background in this story. His portrayal felt fresh and will standout on its own. There are differences between Solider Boy & Captain America and that’s not a bad thing. Viewers will definitely know the difference between the two as the season goes on. Ackles was a superb addition to an already stacked cast of talented actors.

The writing is as sharp and poignant as ever. Showrunner Eric Kripke and the rest of the executive producers (Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, along with comic creators Garth Ennis & Darick Robertson to name a few) make this show still engaging within a pop culture audience that gets over-exposed to the superhero world quite often. Everything about this show hits all the checkmarks for what you want to stand out with a story like this. It’s not for everyone but then again, the world of superheroes isn’t always good vs. evil all the time either.

Overall, The Boys delivers another incredible season. The outstanding performances from Antony Starr and Moriarty will get rightful praise but the rest of the cast stepped up to match them throughout this run. There is much to enjoy in this world of supes vs. everyone. Don’t miss it when it debuts on Prime Video on June 3rd with the first 3 episodes, then weekly after that.

Hit me up on Twitter and let me know what you think of The Boys season 3. Special thanks to Amazon Studio and Prime Video for allowing the ODPH early screener access. Thanks for reading.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! On this edition, we’re concluding a fantastic story from the Comixology Originals banner via Best Jackett Press. Clear #6 by Scott Snyder, Francis Manapul & Andworld Design has been nothing short of a pure adrenaline filled thriller that hasn’t let readers go since the beginning panels of this story. The futuristic world of Detective Sam Dunes has unveiled (pun intended) readers to a very captivating thought of what technology can really do to reality as we know it. How does it all end? Let’s deep dive into the conclusion of this epic tale and find out, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue kicks off with Detective Dunes making his way to the New Golden Gate, a massive Veil production plant. In 2052, Veils allow users to re-create their reality in the vision of whatever they think of. The mystery of veils connects with the death of his love Kendra which has started him on this adventure to begin with. After learning the truth about Veils from the Widow last issue, Dunes is now committed to end it all once and for all. He’s not alone in this latest move. Petal Madders, the client who hired him to investigate her husband is along for the ride.

As with all good intentions, nothing goes as planned here as instantly, an action is made that lights the match on this powder keg moment. What transpires after is a rollercoaster ride of reveals & scenarios that will have readers completely caught off guard and fully invested. Ultimately, the story concludes in a way that only it can. There’s a wide variety of emotions that readers will have right up to the final panel. It’s a fitting end for a character’s journey who’s struggled to find out what is real and what’s behind a veil.

WHAT A FANTASTIC CONCLUSION! Snyder brings this story to an epic finish that really brings everything back to square one. Dunes’ investigation has lead him to dig deeper to see things more “clear.” As we have witnessed reading this series, Snyder has challenged the reader in seeing the problem isn’t so much the antagonist challenging Dunes, but is it technology and what it can do. Our main character is flawed but sticks to his instincts for better or for worse. In this final issue, readers get to see how this all plays out for Dunes and what cost. There’s much to be contemplating about after the final page. Excellent work.

The world of 2052 is brought to so much life by Manapul’s artwork. From the opening page of this issue, the emotions are set as readers see Dunes and Petal driving into New Golden Gate. The art pops off the pages esp. during a 2 page spread featured later in the book (not featured here) and when Dunes and Petal make their way up the building elevator. Adding in so many different elements to this new landscape really brought out the most of this story. From seeing views through other’s eyes really tied thoughts back to the original question theme posed here about technology. There are some great action and character sequences during this issue but nothing stands out more than the final page of this book. It’s those closing images that put the perfect exclamation point on this incredible read.

Overall, Clear #6 brings a strong ending to readers who will have much to savor in re-reading this. Snyder and Manapul create a future world that proves not everything is easy to see when eyes aren’t wide open to the truth behind it. This is a broken record statement on this blog but do yourself a HUGE favor and get signed up for Comixology Originals so you can read incredible stories like this, Night of The Ghoul, We Have Demons & more must-read books. (editor note: This is from first hand testimonial). On Otherworld, Bridgette, Duncan and Rose attempt to make their way back to Sherwood Forrest after recently recruiting the one and only Robin Hood in their fight. While on their way back to the forest, Bridgette unveils her master plan. It’s a gamble but one that has a fighting chance. Meanwhile at the Grail Castle, Bridgette’s daughter Elaine starts making her own moves. One that will cause some waves is the recruitment of Lancelot & his mission.

However, there is no time to focus there as readers are fast forwarded to Christmas time. There’s some great character moments with our trio of heroes to offset what will be unfolding on Christmas Day. New readers will appreciate these moments and regulars will have a nice sequence to build upon until the finals panels of this book and the last image which will have readers buzzing in anticipation.

“Otherworld is a magical place” to paraphrase Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. There might not be a better written character in comics than Bridgette McGuire. Gillen continues to add layers to her character and the overall direction of this story. For the reveal of her plan, it’s delivered in such a fun way that any other character was talking it, it would appear flat. The “Christmas” break is a great pause to the story that connects with the audience. Readers are so used to the fast pace then when it’s slowed down, it delivers on reminding that our heroes are human at the end of the day.

When top artists in comics today are talked about, Dan Mora’s name had better be in the conversation. Balancing the ever-changing world in which this story is set, Mora’s art gives such energy to this book. From the action sequences to the subtle moments with Duncan and Rose having a quiet pause, each detail shown elevates the incredible writing. Factor in Bridgette’s mannerisms and you have a can’t miss issue each month, let alone this issue.

The issue feels almost like a change of pace from the regular issue, but it delivers on slowing down to remind readers about all these characters have accomplished before what is next to come. Last we saw Erica Slaughter, she was arrested for trespassing on a crime scene she was investigating in New Mexico. A young girl’s family was killed and this case is way above the local sheriff’s head. Erica is the only one who can help but being behind bars isn’t exactly working out in her favor. Erica makes a call to a old friend, Big Gary, who works some magic to get her out of her current situation. He knows that any move she makes, The Order of St. George will be shortly following up on.

Meanwhile, Gabi, the lone witness to the killings has been moved into the bartender’s apartment to stay safe. The question now becomes: with Erica off the board, who will save her if the killer tracks her down? Erica can’t answer that because she’s too busy pleading her “case” of why she was at the crime scene to the sheriff. Reluctantly, the sheriff lets Erica go but not without giving her a clue to follow up on. All the while some new arrivals have made a dramatic appearance stateside with a hunt all their own. Readers will be very locked in for this issue.

Tynion continues to make something special happen within these pages. Erica’s conversation with Big Gary was a nice interaction to show some emotion behind Erica. Life after the Order is not exactly a runaway smash, yet the writing here keeps you locked in seeing Erica’s struggles first hand. Erica “working” with Sheriff Thomas as a solid compliment as well. The issue caps off with a closing section involving the House of Cutter. Within those few moments (matched up with last issue) and readers can’t help but be excited to see what happens when this House eventually finds Erica.

Dell’edera & Muerto continue to impress with the art duties here. From showing off the frustration in Erica to Gabi’s strong front of being calm with a monster on the loose, the art team does some fantastic work with the emotions being told. Readers can easily see how both characters are feeling the weight of the stories they’re in. This factors in heavily when you see the talk between both houses looking for Erica. There’s always a unqiue feel to this book and keeps readers on edge of what’s coming.

Overall, the latest chapter of Erica Slaughter continues to gain some steam while keeping readers guessing at what’s next. The book is known for its wonderful storytelling and art and for good reason. The story doesn’t pack a lot (if any) action in it but readers will definitely feel the emotions of the scenes they’re reading within these pages. Since his re-emergence, Peter Stanchek has been the center of a LOT of attention. Waking up with no memory and trying to stay alive, Peter connects with Cici and Young Ago, fellow Psiots that are standing up to authorities trying to hold back the people. With a new found sense of purpose, Stanchek now uses his powers to be a symbol off hope. However, there is a force at play that don’t want to see him succeed. That force is The Renegade, who as we’ve found out thru this series is the “evil” side of Stanchek. This goes to show a fraction at how powerful the Harbinger is: He literally rewired his own brain! Unfortunately, this corrupt version of the Harbinger doesn’t want peace and hope .He wants to watch the world burn.

With Stanchek’s return, readers did also see a return of a fan favorite of the Valiant Universe: Faith aka Zephyr. With their past, it was only a matter of time until she confronted her old “friend”. As Faith enters the fray, the Renegade makes his moves well known. The Renegade starts activating Psiots and preying on their pain and fears. While trying to stop the Renegade, our hero is shot IN THE HEAD by the assassin Blam. This isn’t a bait and switch moment. Peter’s brains are literally leaking all over the street! After some “motivation” from Ago while unconscious, Peter literally heals his own head wound?! Regrouped and refocused (with CiCi now activated in her powers), The Harbinger leads his team against the Renegade and his army of corrupt Psiots with the fate of Psiot City in the balance.

Starting this issue off is our hero leading his team directly into battle. Readers get a glimpse of a solid showcase of what this “team” can do. There is also an interaction between Faith and Blam that leaves a thought of more interactions between them are coming. However, fans see the battle that they’ve been waiting for. It delivers on tying everything back to where we started this series: “Who Is Peter Stanchek”? The conclusion is a fitting one and leaves some questions on can Peter “Be Better”?

Kelly & Lanzing close out this adventure on a very strong note with leaving more questions on the future of the Harbinger. Their run has been based on the theory of can Peter “Be Better”? From where readers witnessed his start to now, the answer is a resounding YES. This latest story has been one of redemption at the cost of fixing his broken soul. Their creative way of demonstrating Stanchek’s powers is one that I will personally miss from this book. The conclusion of the final battle almost felt anti-climactic until you go back and see what the meaning behind it was. To be better, Peter has to forgive himself and give himself another chance. It’s creative and left some doors open on the eventual return.

As for the art, Rodriguez goes back to the strong mental imagery of issue #1 and shows readers that the true battle was never of physical power, but that of mental will. There is an excellent back-to-back 2 page spreads where Peter falls into water that explains this perfectly. The moments feel big between these two. The ending visual of the battle resonates to the rest of the characters of the book. It l leave readers with a varying opinion as previously mentioned until they really break down what happened in this conclusion. The final panel shot is a very fitting one to cap this current volume off on.

Overall, The Harbinger #8 closes the latest saga of Peter Stanchek off with strong writing & amazing artwork. The creative team of Kelly, Lanzing & Rodrigeuz crafted a compelling tale of self discovery and self-closure all while balancing the unpredictable world of one of Valiant’s most powerful beings all the while. Personally when (and I can’t stress “when” instead of “if” enough, especially with a movie in development. ) we see the Harbinger return, the same creative team is back on the book. Their energy to the character was a fresh & welcomed take.

The answer of “Who Is Peter Stanchek” is answered while seeing a new status quo established for Psiot City when readers will see him next. Make a point to get to your local comic shop and get caught up on this latest adventure.

Suffice to say, Safehaven’s newest resident is winning everyone over.

Meanwhile Jason and Yale are thrown into uncharted territory on Planet KO-35. The pair ran into Andros, a ranger with his own mysterious past last issue. Talk about a mic-drop moment to end the issue on. Parrott writes an emotional punch to the reader that caps off a very solid issue. The Trini/Zach babysitting story was a fun break in the action of the Omega Rangers’ new status quo. It gave a good balance to the more serious nature of Jason and Yale’s story with Andros. Considering the namedrop done by the mysterious stranger, Andros’s story should be one to watch. Expecting big things happening there.

Renna delivers another great issue on art duties. Fun opening full page to open the issue on. The moments that jump off the page are the ones involved in the rescue mission. Andros’ facial expressions told a definite story that will only grow from here moving forward. Excellent final panel with the emotional closing moment of this issue as well.

Overall, Power Rangers #19 progresses forward in its new directions. It has a great balance of light & serious moments with a gut-wrenching final shot to close on. Parrott and Renna continue their incredible work and make this issue a can’t miss at the LCS.
