Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast.

For this entry, we are diving into a series that caught both the comics and pop culture world by storm! When Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics dropped Void Rivals onto comic readers, the hype behind a mystery surprise was big. Few knew it was going to be as big as it was!

The issue marked the debut of the Energon Universe, combining the worlds of G.I. Joe and Transformers. With a bright future ahead, many are wondering where the story goes from here. VOID RIVALS #2 by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Matheus Lopes and Rus Wooton gives fans the answer to that question. Let’s take a closer look at where things shape up now, shall we?

When an Agorrian named Darak crashes on an unknown planet, he runs into a Zertinian named Solila. Both alien races have been fighting for years. Now stuck on a planet, the pair have to work together to survive.

As they search the planet, they stumble across a Cybertronian known as Jetfire! With more unknown secrets lurking, the pair remove their helmets. It appears there is more than meets the eye happening on this planet.

This issue kicks off with Darak preparing for his ill-fated trip. With the race for supplies heating up, Darak is feeling the pressure of the mission. After a stern talk from his father, Darak takes flight.

During his time in space, Darak encounters visions of the history of Zertinians and Agorrians. The message becomes more clear that the two races must come together to survive. Readers get a true insight to what is really behind the opposing forces.

What will the pair do next after the information is revealed? Can they co-exist now? The pair fonds themselves in a interesting position as it appears there might be light at the end of the tunnel, but at what cost? Get ready for another big surprise as the issue closes with a final image guaranteed to get fans talking!

BREAKDOWN: Kirkman dives into the history behind the warring alien groups. Darak’s visions tell the bigger picture and give readers some clarity into the events unfolding. The reaction to the new information is telling with the pair. Both had their preconceived notions shattered. Kirkman weave the complexity of the pair’s newfound partnership in with the uneasiness of needed reliance. The latter half of the books plays heavier with this notion. When the next obstacle appears, Kirkman unveils it in grand fashion. There is one noticeable trend with this series: expect the unexpected.

De Felici and Lopes construct many personal scenes between Darak and the people of his world. None feel greater than the ones with his father. Readers get a quick sense about their relationship and how this ties in with him on the planet. There is a gorgeous two page full panel spread of the Sacred Ring that will catch readers eyes. This leads into a full page shot of the two alien races. Little moments like this jump right off the pages. Once back to present time, the banter and body language of the pair helps orchestrate how much work has to be completed and time having been spent. This all leads into a solid closing act with a great exiting panel to conclude the story with.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Kirkman, De Felici and the team usher in another solid issue expanding on the Energon groundwork. Outstanding writing bridges with exceptional art giving readers a new favorite story to jump on board with. Don’t leave the comic shops with picking up this issue.

DUCK AND COVER #1 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS/BEST JACKETT PRESS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, Scott Snyder and Best Jackett Press returns with an all new series on Comixology Originals. Snyder’s line of comics has been winning over fans since its’ first wave of books: We Have Demons (w/art from Greg Capullo). Clear (w/ Francis Manupal), and Night Of The Ghoul (w/ Francesco Francavilla).

Barnstormers (w/ Tula Lotay), Canary (w/ Dan Panosian) and Dudley Datson & the Forever Machine (w/ Jamal Igle) led the second wave charge. October 2022 witnessed the debut of phase 3 with Book Of Evil (w/JOCK).

With the majority of those stories concludes (and now in print form via Dark Horse Comics), fans have been waiting to see what’s next.

The answer is DUCK AND COVER #1. Snyder is reunited with Rafael Albuquerque (STOUT CLUB), who fans know from their incredible run on American Vampire. The pair is united with Marcelo Maiolo and Bernardo Brice and what a story they have lined up!

Let’s not wait any longer and jump right in, shall we?

Set in the 1950’s, a young teen named Del Reeves is aspiring to be a film maker. His father, the high school janitor, bought him a Modackchrome 330 camera on a month’s salary. With the dangers of heightened Cold War tension and The N.O’s (a local Gang) looming, the boys escape in their film world. While out with his “crew” filming, Fate decided to intervene and say “cut” on the production.

When a stray Doberman attacks Del, he loses his eye in the ordeal. At the hospital, an apology is given but not the one anyone would expect. The police are “blaming” Del for the incident and the dog’s owner will let things drop if Del apologies. Reluctantly he does.

The story then jumps several years ahead. Reeves is planning on heading to Hollywood. Working at a drive-in theatre, Reeves and his friend Oliver Ozawa come across a rough crowd. With the current climate of possible nuclear warfare, readers can understand the frustration. However, when Pugg Lansky’s radio speaker “doesn’t work”, it leads into a hostile confrontation with Reeves, Ozawa, Lansky and a few others.

After all hell breaks loose, Reeves visits the involved parties at “Daytention” at the school to confront Lansky. At this stage, an unexpected event happens. The event changes the course for everyone in the classroom.

What is the event? Readers quickly witness the world as Reeves and company knew is gone. What stands in its’ place is a landscape no one will see coming. It is one of the most creative flips involving history I’ve seen in a while. The final moments leave nothing to chance as to where things are heading now. Get ready for another can’t miss story from this line!

BREAKDOWN: Snyder brings in many different elements to this debut issue. Del Reeves instantly wins over readers with his drive and strength thru uncomfortable times. The social tensions challenge his character and he never falters rising above it. Reeves and Ozawa’s friendship is organic and their conversations pop up as a break from the anxiousness of the world around them. Lansky reflects the complete opposite and plays a solid foil to Reeves.

Just when readers think they know where the story is going, Snyder pulls one of the most brilliant changes with the path of the final act. The themes carries heavy in a reflection of the times but mixes in sci-fi elements to give it a unique edge. Pacing kept things moving and brought everything to a superb close with the final page. Excellent debut.

Albuquerque and Maiolo construct a detailed vision of America in the 1950’s. From the opening moments, the panels reflect a sense of optimism as the boys start their film. Through the tense emotions, the art showcases how the youthfulness is oblivious to the dangers. Fantastic two-page spread bringing the feel of the drive-in movies. This brings the introduction to most of the major players. The versatile mannerisms feature how everyone feels during this era. Perfect set-up to kick off the fight between Reeves, Lansky and all around.

The final act is where the art shines. Bringing in a completely new imagery to this time was a joy to witness. Events moves quickly and panels never missed a step translating that to the audience. The final page is a lasting impression that this is no ordinary story. That’s also a huge win for readers moving forward.

Snyder and Albuquerque usher in an imaginative take on the combustible social climate of the 1950’s. Outstanding writing and flawless artwork set the stage for what is sure to be an instant classic. Fans will not be able to forgive themselves if they don’t pick up this issue. Highest possible recommendation.

SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re following the next chapter from a brand-new series from Image Comics that more people need to be talking about. THE SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #2 by Drew Craig and Jason Finestone debut mixing in elements of the Jack Kirby style of storytelling with modern superhero themes. With all the groundwork being laid last issue, the future looks very bright for this series. Let’s take a closer look and see how things pan out in the second issue, shall we?

Grant Garrison isn’t your average high school student. After being found lost with amnesia, Garrison takes a shot trying to fit in. All the while, there are forces from outside of Earth looking for a weapon known as “Sharsrum”, which could spell doom for the entire universe.

During the day of school, the normal drama is cut short after a meteor crashes into Kirby High school. Garrison wakes up to find he's survived the crash with Jen, a fellow student. Everyone else has gone away. In it's wake, an unknown creature stands.

Garrison seems unready for what's next, but he bonds with an object, he transforms into something more than human. After defeating the creature, Grant finds out it was Principal Murray. With a mystery unfolding and dangerous figures on the hunt, Grant’s life will never be the same.

The next chapter kicks off with a recap of previous events. Readers find out that those involved have various levels of changes if they survived. Grant and Jen attend the mass burial for those who didn’t survive the meteor attack.

During the ceremony, the pair notice someone with a bodyguard walking around. She is revealed to be Angela Rizni, daughter of Don Rizni from the Techno Mafia. Angela is ushered away by her Uncle and isolated from her friends. At her home (under his protection), Angela escapes to clear her head. Someone else with the same idea is Starstrom, who crosses paths with her. All the while, something else is unfolding. Something ….Supernatural.

Readers find out that something has triggered ZOMBIES to come up from the ground! What or who caused this? Can Starstorm handle another threat? Things move pretty fast as events play out. The final moments give a few things to ponder as it seems that Starstorm might be just the start of powered beings in this universe.

BREAKDOWN: Craig mixes a few things into the overall picture that create a fun, but at times confusing story. Kudos on mixing in a famous line from “The Crow.” Angela’s plotline involving her friends seemed sudden in their reveals. Instead of diving in more to Starstorm’s own beginning, the addition of more powered characters takes away that connecting time but leaves the door open for expanding on a universe. Being only two issues in, there is still much clouded in suspense.

Craig never loses the superhero elements that shined in the first issue. The throwback feel still works, even with all the new names involved. The zombie portion of the book was a fun mix and something unexpected. Events moved at a brisk pace but with such a bigger cast now, where things head now is literally anyone’s guess following the final page.

The introduction of the Digital mafia was a solid display, giving enough but not diving in too much. The same can be said for the flashbacks of Angela’s parents. Craig gives a brief but effective origin to Angela. The interactions with Grant came off well and readers can easily pick up on the friendship forming. The zombies really popped off the panels with a subtle retro feel to them. The faceoff with Angela and her uncle stands out as well with the expressions showing the shift in their stat quo. The final full page panel looks to be one readers will remember as a possible start to growing an already budding universe.

FINAL POINT: 7.5 OUT OF 10

The saga of Starstorm dips away from focusing on the main character to introduce some possible major players into the mix. Readers will enjoy the throwback feel of this story as it combines many elements with its’ blossoming origin. Craig and Finestone bring the always fun dynamic of zombies into the fold as the gear shift will be entertaining to fans that enjoy the superhero genre.

LOCAL MAN #5 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, one of the underrated series on the shelves brings its’ next chapter to readers with another can’t miss issue. LOCAL MAN #5 by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio from Image Comics has taken readers on a trip thru the up and down of Jack Xaver aka CROSSJACK as he adjusts to his life as a former superhero.

The series has paid a great homage to the classic superheroes themes of Image while mixing in a modern mystery. Last issue raised the stakes and revealed Xaver’s problems are only getting worse. Let’s not delay and jump into issue #5 & see how the drama unfolds, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Jack Xaver aka CROSSJACK had a very public fall from grace when he was released from Third-Gen. Now forcefully retired from being a super hero, Xaver has returned home to Farmington, Wisconsin. The welcome hasn’t been warm. The residents (including his family) are not so favorable to his return. Xaver tries settling in but his super hero past still haunts him.

After an encounter with a former rival, the body count starts rising around Xaver. Former foes like Hodag and Frightside are mysteriously killed, with Xaver being a suspect. Xaver breaks the rules and starts to investigate. This brings the attention of his former team and one member with a HUGE grudge against him: Camo Crusader!

Jack infiltrates a secret base which might lead to some answers, but is interrupted by Crusader. A fight ensues and Xaver kills Crusader when he tries killing Chief Bucholz to frame Jack and protect his secrets. With Bucholz ready to clear Xaver’s name, he is attacked by a teleportating assailant, looking to finish what Crusader stated!

This issue picks up with Xaver waiting at the Fourth-Gen Community Center (former base). Xaver has no idea the chief is bleeding out and Third-Gen is in fast pursuit of the truth about Crusader’s fate. Xaver starts to get curious and starts to make his way through the old base of operations. The memories start coming back to Jack as seeing old pictures of the past hit a certain way. When thinking of what Camo Crusader’s plan was trying to do, readers can easily connect with the moments’ impact on Xaver.

Unfortunately, the trip down memory lane is short lived as the mystery assailant is finally revealed! Readers will not be ready as the attack begins on Xaver! The battle lives up to the built as Xaver is given a heavy weight to carry as the motivations come to light. The action picks up the pace until an unexpected conclusion brings that event to an end. Even with that moment being a huge one, it is overshadowed by the fallout from Xaver’s latest challenge. Another figure sparks a conversation that isn’t without weight. Heading into the final act, answers that fans have been questions surface, leading Xaver into a new direction. The final pages prove without a shadow of a doubt this series is only getting started.

The bonus story gives more clarity to Camo Crusader’s involvement with 4th Gen, putting a great bookend to putting a finish to one avenue of the ever-engaging series.

BREAKDOWN: Fleecs and Seeley pull out all the stops for an unforgettable issue. Jack Xaver is a complex character to put it mildly. Losing the spotlight in such a public fashion only to be forced to re-live the past with murders piling up isn’t an easy task. The writers have portrayed him as someone trying to do good, but slipping up more times then not.

Excellent throw-in line referencing the classic Image books. Seeing the effects of his action as it ties in with the assailant is a great twist to the basic set-up for good guy vs. bad guy.

As great as that sequence is, the one readers will have the stronger reaction to is the conversation with Xaver and who he speaks with in the fallout. It brings up feeling of sadness and disappointment as what Xaver thought was his dream was nothing more in reality.

In just a few panels, the writers cemented Xaver is a likeable loser with any wins swiftly taken away. If things look dire now, the closing moments bring more intrigue

The art displayed the brutal face-off with Xaver and his assailant superbly. The panels carry a steady pace with only slowing down to give readers moments of story. This adds more gravity to the moments unfolding as it sinks in to Jack what has been happening. There’s a few panels that shift Jack to an earlier time, displaying how he is seeing himself in this fight.

The emotional points hit with readers, especially when Jack finally has a talk with a person of interest after the fight. Reading the body language of the conversation, there is no way to dodge the sense of self-loss matching the words. Solid final sequence to set-up the next stage in Jack’s post-superhero life.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

Local Man #5 gives readers a very satisfying conclusion to the initial mystery of the book while planting seeds to for what is next. Jack Xaver’s life is anything but normal with the complex losses he keeps taking. Fleecs and Seeley have raised the stakes with excellent writing and art painting the picture of a broken hero. You need to add this series into your comic collection.

ARCADE KINGS #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re following along one boy’s search for his brother in the pages of the brand new series from Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment. The first issue made a big splash and the follow-up looks to continue to win another round. ARCADE KINGS #2 by DYLAN BURNETT, Walter Baiamonte and Sara Antonellini bring readers along for the journey through Infinity City as Joe pushes forward with more challenges in his way. Time to put some quarters into the game and level up for this review:

Years ago, Infinity City has been known as the home for fighting world champion Victor McMax! Watching in the crowd are his two sons Joe and Ken. Both boys show distinct differences about their “dad’s” line of work. Abruptly, McMax retires from fighting shortly after a title defense. From that moment on, to say things have changed is an understatement.

Fast forward to present time and Joe has emerged in Valleytown, a suburb of Infinity City. Joe has donned a helmet and has made the Round House Arcade his temporary home. However, when a stranger walks in to challenge the reigning arcade king, it turns out to be more than a game. The opponent has ties to Joe’s dad with a message to return to his side. Joe has other plans and survives the encounter. Unfortunately, winning means losing as Joe needs to leave the arcade to continue his quest: to find his brother Ken!

This issue picks up with Joe and Ken fighting as young kids in their Dad’s estate. The brothers spar with Joe getting the upper hand. This pleases their dad but Ken is belittled for not measuring up. In this mix, Victor struggles breathing. The training continues but Ken is dismissed.

Jumping to present time, Joe is on a train to Rockview, which looks to be abandoned when he steps off. Walking the streets, Joe comes across a vandalized billboard for his father’s school. All the while, Plum Khurana makes her way through the vacant streets running into a group playing a game. When she interrupts, the favor is returned by Joe, who sees Plum as another obstacle to his quest.

Readers ring the bell and see how these two “talk”. How does the conversation go? Suffice to say, their conversation has another vested party interested. Who jumps into the fray? Can Joe stay out of his dad’s reach yet again? The final act provides some answers while a move is made setting up a twist to the story heading to the next issue.

BREAKDOWN: Burnett keeps things moving with a very entertaining issue. Delving into the background of the brothers, Burnett gives some insight on what caused the rift between Joe and the family. The moment is brief but speaks volumes about the fractures with the family. Switching to present time, Joe comes across as confident as ever without showing the true emotions behind the helmet. The introduction of Plum Khurana was a great addition to the cast of characters. Being the “protector” of Rockview, Plum demonstrates strong reactions to counter and align with Joe when it becomes needed. When the third party arrives, Plum shows a change of character that gives a solid pause for Joe’s story. The moves made following the encounter is a very unique dynamic switch that is sure to keep readers on their toes.

The art flows very fast between panels. Rockview is displayed as broken and vacant. It is quite a contrast from Valleytown. Baiamonte and Antonellini (along with Simona Iurato and Sharon Marino) drive this point home when readers first see Plum wake up and head out into the street. The art team showcase her range of emotions to give her character a sense of varying levels. The action sequences recreates legendary fighting game energy with vibrant panels. Andworld Design’s lettering through these spots adds a fun look to the battles. There is an excellent image with Joe facing off against the challenger with the use of short panels to illustrate the action. It balances out the figure standing in the center of the page with a different blue coloring to make the page pop. Excellent build-up for the next chapter with a strong final panel to leave things off on.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

It’s a second round knockout with the latest chapter of Arcade Kings. Burnett ushers in the next level of Joe’s quest with an excellent story matched by the dynamic visuals which are quickly becoming this series calling card. Make sure it’s not “Game Over” at the LCS this week and get yourself this issue on New Comic Book Day.

ROGUE SUN #13 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, Comics’ most exciting universe kicks off its’ next phase coming out of the huge crossover event “Supermassive 2023”. Leading the charge is one of the pillars of the Massive-Verse, who left readers hanging with a new stat quo in place before taking a small break for the Image Comics and Black Market Narrative event. If you are jumping in for the first time, TPB for volumes 1 and 2 are in stores now, but shocking plot twists are nothing new to this series as longtime readers have known. Considering who is creating the series, fans know to expect the unexpected and fully get their moneys worth!

ROGUE SUN #13 by Ryan Parrott (POWER RANGERS, DEAD DAY), Abel, Marco Renna, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey (editor Michael Busittil) returns to comic shops with the next phase of challenges for Dylan Siegel. Dylan Siegel’s life has been anything but normal since the passing of his father Marcus Bell aka Rogue Sun. Being the heir to the mantle of a superhero changes a few things. With unexpected dangers, new adversaries and a new family dynamic unlike anyone else, Dylan has had an interesting start to his heroic career to say the least. And we haven’t even mentioned high school yet. Dylan hasn’t been completely alone during this journey as he’s had astral mentors guiding him. The spirit of his late father and most recently Caleb Hawthorne, the KNIGHT SUN have been working on making Dylan the hero he potentially could be.

Last readers saw him, Dylan suffered an unexpected loss during a battle with Hellbent. One of his fellow classmates, Reggie, was killed standing up to the dangerous foe when Dylan was defeated. While distraught over the loss, Dylan turns control over his body to Caleb to finish the fight. When the battle has ended, Caleb surprises Dylan by maintaining control of his body, leaving Dylan as an astral spirit watching someone else control his physical body!

The next phase of Rogue Sun begins at the Crescent City Medical Center. The medical team on duty is finishing autopsies and one deceased body stands out for a gruesome image. Suddenly, one gets sick out of nowhere. They set outside to get some air and when they return, the body is gone but something else is in its place hovering overhead.

Meanwhile, Dylan is self reflecting on the recent events. Watching someone else live his life has made a strong impact on his view of the world. Caleb (as Dylan) makes his way to breakfast with the Bell family and the change is noticeable. Readers even see how the family is welcoming it. All the while Dotty is meeting with some of the well known villains of Dylan in an attempt to rehabilitate them but a warning is passed along that Mourningstar is coming.

The change is noted by his fellow classmates, especially his ex-girlfriend Vanessa. As much as things change, some things remain the same as Rogue Sun runs into an old friend with some unfinished business. Readers witness how the new dynamic between Dylan and Caleb plays out with another shocking twist to the story coming in the final moments. Get ready for another mic drop moment when the last page hits. This next phase of Dylan Siegel isn’t short of surprises.

BREAKDOWN: Parrott continues to push this story into compelling themes with this issue. Dylan is in uncharted territory watching someone live his life. The conversations and reactions of those around him is telling of what kind of person he was prior to the change. There is an epiphany starting to take place that Parrott begins to lead the readers on. Losing abilities he took for granted, Dylan lashes out at the worst time to Caleb concerning. Their relationship has deteriorated rapidly and justifiably. It challenges the motto of “with great power comes great responsibility”. One moment that really jumps out within these pages is a conversation with Dylan, Vanessa and Reggie’s mother. Parrott pens the scene with great care and drives home the impact of Reggie’s noble actions. Great final sequence to end this issue on and kick the next chapter off in style.

Abel and Renna split the art duties for this issue. That is never a bad thing when you have 2 extremely talented artists such as them working on a story. The moment of the villains meeting with Dotty displayed as a pyramid of mirrors for a full page panel comes across as a huge event for the readers. The emotional displays during the conversation about Reggie’s death hit very hard and add more weight to an already heavy moment. The action sequences complement the full page re-introduction of Dylan’s “Old Friend”. It’s fallout connects with readers sending them into the closing moments with a full page visual guaranteed to bring them back for more.

Parrott’s method of mixing in emotional moments with shocking twists delivers on another fantastic issue with amazing visuals form Abel, Renna and the rest of the team. The story begins in a classroom with Alexander “Xander” Waterford giving a decertation to his class about frogs. While as detailed as it was, Xander incorrectly did the assignment. It wasn’t supposed to be a Biology report. It was supposed to be a BOOK report. Embarrassed, Xander grows a big hatred for frogs, taking his anger out on them. This hatred didn’t go unnoticed by Bufobeelz, The Frog Devil. It emerged and took Xander into the depths of the Mississippi River, drowning him.

When he wakes, he’s in a place that no one wants to be in. Xander is in Hell. While there, he’s made “friends” with Midori Fukada, a young assassin, Ernie Comstock, who was killed by a deadly axe stuck in his head and Balpha-Dagon, an annoying fire-breathing demon. On this day, the group decided to embark on a quest for some ice cream. What they got instead was more than they bargained for.

What has this group gotten themselves into? Can Hell actually get any worse? Readers find out quickly that the best laid plans can go up in smoke, even in Hell, as the group becomes entangled in an adventure that is sure to become more dangerous. Considering the final image closing the chapter out, the group had better be ready to fight because there is no easy way out of their troubles.

BREAKDOWN: Layman infuses elements of adventure and dark humor within the opening shot of this series. Xander is a compelling character to introduce readers to initially. His story brings in a fantasy element early into these pages. Once Xander meets up with the others, the book’s pace moves very fast to give an idea of why things are as they are. The others in this adventurous party get smaller origins but enough to connect with readers. The ‘Ice Cream Heist” plays out for an engaging tale but the hook is the surprise ending. What leans into being a safe quest rapidly swings into dangerous territory heading into the next chapter.

Jok’s depiction of Hell has a very unique look to it. The use of colors gives a deceiving look to what Hell appears like. The imagery looks like a twisted fairy tale landscape. The creatures roaming the land stand out and look anything but normal. Even with Balpha appearing to be a “teenage demon”, his look comes across as a mirage due to his facial and eye expressions. The one character that makes a huge impression when she appears is Midori, who commands the panels with her presence. This is all capped off with the twist ending visual leading this group into the unknown danger awaiting.

For this entry, we’re checking out the pen-ultimate issue of the latest story arc from an Image Comics series that has generated quite a buzz amongst comic fans. Ever since its’ initial kickstarter run, the hype behind this series has been enormous. Knowing who’s the creative masterminds behind the series, it’s a no brainer on why it comes with justifiable hype behind it.

NOCTERRA #15 by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Marcelo Miaolo and Andworld Design brings the battle against everlasting darkness to a screeching halt. Lets take a closer look and how this arc ends, shall we?

Ten years ago, the world as we know it changed. There was no more light. The sun was gone. In its’ place was endless darkness. People were turning into creatures known as shades. Artificial Light is the only thing keeping others from turning. Valentina "Val" Riggs aka Sundog is a ferryman whose fully lit eighteen wheeler moves goods and humans through the cold landscape. During one of her runs, Val came across Augustus McCray (Gus) and his grand-daughter Bailey, also known as Piper. The pair threw an offer in Val’s direction that she couldn’t say no to: Transport to an unknown safe haven and help cure her adopted brother Emory.

Since that time, the “Sundog Convoy” has faced many challenges including the deadly Blacktop Bill, who’s made it a mission to kill Augustus, or “the man who killed the sun”. Along the way, the convoy has gone through changes but the mission remains the same. As they head towards the mythical place known as Eos, the danger hasn’t stopped growing its evil hold.

This issue picks up where the convoy has arrived in Eden, a land of eternal sunshine. Bailey is trying to process her grandfather’s equation to fix things but it appears to not be correct. It is possible the equation was to lead people to Eos for safety. The Humanoid protectors of Eos known as The Glares are pressing for the convoy to decide if they are staying or going, but someone else has arrived that causes a change in plans.

Blacktop Bill has traced them down, bringing darkness with him. Shades are forming in the utopia. With their backs against the wall, Emory comes up with a plan. The plan is a long shot, but with Bill taking the fight directly to the group, they are running out of options. How does Gus’s equation fit into all of this? Can Eden be saved? Readers bare witness to Emory playing a deadly game and taking a chance that defines high risk/high reward. The repercussions are huge. With stakes never higher, the closing act feels like a roller-coaster heading into a final page that will surely leave readers speechless and waiting with baited breath for the conclusion in July.

BREAKDOWN: Snyder ramps up the action heading into the arc conclusion. Emory’s risky play demonstrates the critical situation they are in. With everything crashing around them, there is no time to play things safe. Readers can easily identify with the bold move as victory feels out of reach, but they can’t just surrender either. Blacktop Bill continues to be an impressive antagonist with his power play at Eden. The ruthlessness of his approach in dealing with Emory’ move resonates off the panels. It is a classic good vs. evil set-up which Snyder pulls off with ease and precise skill. Right thru the final act, the pacing matches the intensity of the situation leading to the jaw-dropping close of the issue.

Daniel’s art encompasses the danger of Bill’s threat right from the start. Bailey and Emory’s reactions speaks volumes thru their eyes as they see him appear in Eos. This is accompanied by a fantastic 2 page full-panel spread showcasing Bill bringing terror to Eos. The quieter moments also jump out as Emory has a moment with Bailey that feels like a farewell when readers see it. The battle with Bill and Emory holds nothing back with panels of Bill’s growing enjoyment of what he’s putting Emory thru. Daniel displays the varying emotions thru their encounter leading up to a spectacular closing image to send things into a bigger frenzy when the series returns.

With hope slipping away, the Sundog convoy throws caution to the wind in an attempt to face the darkness in an issue that can’t be missed! With incredible storytelling and amazing visuals provided by Synder, Daniels and the team, Nocterra shifts into another gear with no signs of slowing down.

For this entry, we’re checking out the debut issue of the next chapter stemming out from a GLAAD Media Award-nominated sports comic under the Boom! Box imprint of Boom! Studios. FENCE: REDEMPTION #1 by C.S. Pacat (Dark Rise), Johanna the Mad (Wynd), Joana LaFuente, and Jim Campbell re-introduces readers to the world of Halverton and the players involved in becoming the elite in fencing. Let’s take a closer look at see what’s unfolding here, shall we?

The story begins with the fencers of Kings Row now set-up at Haverton, deep into training. Their coaches are observing and critiquing their technique. There is a noticeable difference in commitment from the team members. With the state championships looming, this is one of the last times the team can prepare for the event. The pressure is mounting and it can be seen on their faces. One player feeling this especially is Nicholas, who is determined to land a “flick’. Nicholas may not be the strongest skill-wise amongst the fencers but has arguably the biggest upside. This is a vast contraction to Seiji, who comes off unphased by what’s around him. However, others think he’s still not over a match with a rival, who is considered the best of the best. The team captain, Harvard, doesn’t seem to phased by what’s coming but the coaches are concerned with his time management.

Making matters worse, Aiden is late and doesn’t seem to be that committed to the team. This brings up more frustration which Aiden plays off, explaining how Harvard and him have known each other long enough to know what expectations should be. Once everyone arrives to the training, the coaches drop a bombshell on the group. The group from Exton is coming to observe the training. This causes a reaction out of Seiji, because he knows Jesse is coming with them and there’s a history between the both.

How will the team fare with Exton swinging thru? Can Nicholas improve in time to make an impact? How will Harvard step up to the challenge? Can Seiji confront the ghosts from his past? Readers will get some answers as there is more to this match than anyone realizes. The final page will set the pace for the rest of the series as a challenge is thrown down that will either make them into stars or break them in the process.

BREAKDOWN: Pacat sets in motion a high-stakes challenge some team members might falter trying to hit their marks. This issue focuses heavily on Nicholas’s training as he pushes himself to become more. Readers see how he is trying to hone his skills for the bigger challenges and gives the sense that he, not Seiji, will be the one having to face off against their biggest rival at the end. The other key members of the team (Aiden, Harvard and Seiji) get time to give new readers a sense of their stories but not enough to get the full picture. The main takeaway is not everyone is ready for what’s coming. there is a distinct change when the team from Exton arrives. It closes events out with a solid ending leading into what will be the driving plot of the series.

Johanna The Mad and LaFuente bring a energetic view to the drama surrounding this tale. Nicholas’s drive is well-illustrated thru his facial expressions in this issue. Readers can easily connect with what he’s trying to accomplish and get a small payoff near the closing act. There is a great sequence where Bobby asks one of the Coaches about a technique breakdown. The art team displays this as a solid guide to readers not well-versed in the sport of fencing. The closing moments display the tension built with Seiji plus the reveal of what looks to be an underlying plot developing into next issue.

For this entry, we’re continuing to follow the story of JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK and the latest escapades of a hero fallen from grace in the pages of Image Comics’ latest hit series. If anyone has ever wondered about recapturing the feel and energy from an early 90’s

Image series, this book has done it and given it a modern feel. LOCAL MAN #4 by by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio dives further into the mystery surrounding Xaver’s return home and a mounting body count following him. Let’s take a closer look at the latest chapter, shall we?

JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK’s tenure as a super hero has been put on indefinite hold after publicly being removed from the team Third-Gen. Returning home to Farmington, Wisconsin after the public disgrace, Jack tries assuming a “normal” life. However, his super hero past won’t let him go as he’s now connected to the deaths of former enemies The Hodag and Frightside. With a killer on the loose and setting Jack up for the fall, Jack breaks the rules of his Third-Gen termination & attempts to resume his heroics.

This issue picks up with Jack (and his dog) investigating a restricted water quarry where Hodag tipped off Frightside about before both were killed. He’s interrupted by Chief Bucholz who breaks the news about Frightside. Jack was last seen around both before their respective deaths. Not ready to be brought in, Jack jumps the fence and hits the water. During the swim, he finds an underground tunnel into a secret lair.

Once inside the lair, Jack begins to uncover some secrets he is not ready to deal with. He’s also paid a visit by an old teammate: Camo Crusader , who isn’t ready to forgive and forget what Jack “has done”. Readers find out more clues to why everyone hates Jack along with more clues to the bigger mystery at hand. However, nobody is ready for the later half of this issue with big surprises that change the course on everything! If readers think that’s a big deal, just wait for the final panels as there’s one last reveal to be told that gives some clarity on what to expect next.

The flashback flip-portion of this story will also give some deeper clarity on the love triangle between Crossjack/Neon/Camo Crusader that plays into present time. Expect more shocking moments with that concluding last image.

BREAKDOWN: Fleecs & Seeley start putting the puzzle pieces together behind the mystery unfolding. Seeing Jack being the only voice of reason has been a particular take that pays off each time. The meeting between him and Chief Bucholz worked to demonstrate this. Bucholz would like nothing more than to pin this on Jack due to his wife’s past with Jack. This blinds him from seeing what’s going on until he discovers evidence that backs up Jack’s actions. The moment fans will be talking about is the confrontation between Jack and Camo. The tension has been building for 4 issues now and readers get a solid payoff (even given more weight based off the flashback story). The pacing of the story keeps things moving along right to the huge reveal in the final moments. Jack’s road to redemption takes one step forward and two steps back making it compelling reading each time out.

The art reflects this heavily. Even when Jack appears to catch a break, his reactions never show too much joy. The events preceding have left him broken but he moves forward. The confrontation with Camo plays out well within the panels. The lead-in doesn’t falter when they meet. Seeing Jack outmatched and somehow maintaining made for great storytelling. Without revealing too much, the fallout of the Jack/Camo moments will be one readers will be chatting the most about. Those panels hold nothing back as the emotional build-ff comes thru with the action and resolution. The final panel leaves a few more questions to ponder.

The flip on the art style plays right into the nostalgia of those early Image comics. When readers see that, it literally is a trip back to that era and gives the current moments more weight for a bigger payoff.

Since their last pairing back in 2019, fans have been waiting to see when these forces combine for another fantastic adventure. Their wait wasn’t too long as in December of 2022, Boom! Studios and IDW teamed up again for the next chapter. The series has been nothing but win with a creative team that has delivered on an unforgettable run, building towards an epic finale. *** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

Set only months after their initial meeting, the combined forces of Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles have been faced with the combined threat of Krang and Rita Repulsa. Shredder had been laying low after his defeat from the merged forces. Casey Jones (longtime TMNT ally) went searching for him and wound up getting captured, or so readers thought. Meanwhile the united bad guys took the fight directly to Angel Grove with a takeover of the command center with the clear intent of accessing the Morphin Grid.

All would have been lost if not for an unlikely "ally” in the battle: Shredder! “The enemy of my enemy is my (temporary) friend” has never been more true as an uneasy alliance was formed to stop Rita and Krang once and for all. Their reasons vary on why but neither side is complaining about the support. The fight has worked its’ way across Angel Grove and Dimension X with many twists and turns to keep both fan bases on the edge of their seats with each issue. With last issue’s ending, Krang looks to finish the fight once and for all, taking over the Megazord in his own twisted fashion.

This issue opens up with the TMNT team (infused with the powers of the Dimension X broken morphers) returning to the Command Center to face off with Rita. However, Rita is waiting for them with a powered up and brainwashed Casey Jones poised to fight. Meanwhile, the fight for Angel Grove is in full swing as the Power Rangers (mutated into animal hybrids) attempt to slow down the Mega-Krang giant. In their current state, they can’t summon their zords, but one person can. Shredder activates a morpher and summons the Green Ranger’s Dragonzord!!! The feared TMNT adversary in charge of one of the most powerful weapons is a worrisome site but the Rangers get some more back-up as Zordon and Alpha arrive in a TurtleZord ready for action!

From here on out, the issue shifts to all action. It may be cliché to say “Big Fight Feel”, but that is exactly what fans witness here. In one corner, it’s DragonZord and TurtleZord vs Mega Krang! In the other is the Turtles facing off against Rita and Casey! Both battles live up to expectations with a few well times moments mixed in. They hit their marks and the fallouts feel impactful. The resolution plays into both fandoms with excellent parting moments. One moment brings everything back full circle to a degree, reminding readers of how great crossovers like these are when done right. The final moments play into more MMPR/TMNT lore, leaving endless possibilities of what’s next should we see these teams together again.

BREAKDOWN: Parrott constructs a closing chapter that will have fans raving in the weeks following. Balancing two fandoms of such pop-culture appeal can be difficult. Parrott plays into the strengths of each team to bring out the best in their heroic actions. Making Shredder a “frienemy” to a degree was a highlight of this issue and series. Seeing him use the powers of the Green Ranger & using the Dragonzord was a great twist. The uneasy tension he creates added to the drama. The Rangers kept waiting for the shoe to drop and him to turn, but he never did. This all plays into the long game of his ultimate goals, but seeing him save the day stands out. The Sub-plotline with Casey Jones also is a highlight moment for this series. With juggling so many characters involved, putting the spotlight on his arc broke away the sole focus on both teams for a great feature. Meshing up elements of both fandoms played out perfectly as well. The reaction after the mutation powers fade by the Rangers is prime example of this. Readers get so many possibilities presented and implemented that you can’t help but be excited for potential future adventures involving these two teams, should the situation arise.

Bringing in the premier artist in comics for this project was a huge win from the start. Seeing Mora bring his infectious action sequences to life is a whole other level of amazing. The battles of Zords pulls no punches with an attention to detail unmatched. The Mega Krang reflection in the TurtleZord’s faceplate is a prime example of this. There is one near full page panel that fans will be ecstatic to see and how detailed it is will absolutely blown fans away. Not everything this issue involves action to make an imprint. The anguish in Casey Jones’ face in the concluding moments of his story is another area. Mora blends in the quiet moments and gives them equal value to the full blown intensity of the big action panels. Mora gives readers much to digest with the closing panels. They will no doubt have fans buzzing about if and when paths cross again for these franchises.

Parrott and Mora merge the best of what makes these two fandoms special into a series that readers won’t be able to stop talking about. The finale brings the action with the incredible visuals provided by Mora and Raul Angulo, giving both teams a battle living up to its’ billing. Parrott’s writing is superb tying in the emotional aspects of the young heroes facing a combined front by dangerous villains on the verge of finally succeeding in their plans. The series never falters and nails the landing with what transpires within these pages. You simply cannot miss this incredible series & finale!

ROGUE SUN #12 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, readers have arrived at the finale of the second arc from one of the breakout series hailing from comics’ most exciting line: The Massive-Verse! Since its’ debut over a year ago, the adventures of Dylan Siegel have captured readers attention and never let go. With masterful plot twists thrown in the journey of stepping out of his father’s shadow and forging his own legacy, Dylan has faced adversity head on but his latest foe might be too much for the young hero to handle. ROGUE SUN #12 by Ryan Parrott, Abel, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey (editor Michael Busittil) concludes the “Hellbent” story arc before all eyes shift towards one of 2023’s biggest comic events: SUPER-MASSIVE 2!

After last issue, all bets are off on how Dylan will handle the recent actions of (arguably) his greatest foe. Let’s not wait another second and dive into the culmination of this fantastic second chapter, shall we?

Rogue Sun #12

Dylan Siegel is the latest to bear the mantle of Rogue Sun. After his father is killed, Dylan is thrusted into the role and unfortunately for him, life as he knew it was over. Meeting an entire family he never knew, dealing with the normal drama involved with high school and fighting dangers that have tested him to his limits is what Dylan juggles while trying to escape his father’s legacy and define his own in the process.

On his latest adventure, Dylan has come across a foe that left him for dead after their first encounter: Hellbent. Being gifted abilities from the evil Mourningstar, Hunter aka Hellbent has been seeking revenge on Dylan after an encounter with Hunter’s father left him in dire shape. Much like Dylan, Hunter looks to break from his father’s legacy and carve (literally) a path of his own.

Dylan does have one factor in his side that might be the deciding factor in this conflict. Dylan has a new mentor in the form of Caleb Hawthorne, the KNIGHT SUN! Caleb sends Dylan in the direction of the Aviary realm of the Ravyn Queen. Making the journey into the realm, Dylan secures a magical quill that could be the tipping point to stop Hellbent. Dylan needs to move fast because Hellbent has crashed the homecoming dance in an attempt to draw out Rogue Sun and get the quill.

This issue starts off with Hellbent addressing the young crowd in attendance of the Crescent City Homecoming Dance. Hellbent dismisses the security trying to stop him and threatens a student who stands up to him. Luckily, Rogue Sun finally arrives in dramatic fashion and stops Hellbent from harming the student. Hellbent demands Rogue Sun give him the quill that he was ordered to get, but Dylan wants the student body’s safety assured before anything.

Much to the surprise of everyone, a new player crashes (literally) the dance. Someone made a deal with Mourningstar and the price is the quill. Dylan’s had enough to deal with facing Hellbent alone. What will he do with two deadly threats in front of him? With the assist from Caleb, Dylan draws his flaming sword and prepares for the new threat. Hellbent acts quickly and attacks while Dylan is facing the new threat. The action takes a slow pause as Dylan loses ground.

At this point in the story, Readers need to brace for one of the more emotional moments in the series as one person’s actions show grave consequences. This one moment causes a domino effect sending Dylan into uncharted territory for his superhero career. What action transpires that shakes Dylan to his core? Can he overcome the dual threat of his adversaries? The fallout from the homecoming dance will be felt for many issues to come. The final act redefines Dylan’s path but not without changing the status quo. Just when you think that this issue has stopped with the major moments, the closing pages drop another big moment that will have fans talking until the next issue drops post Supermassive 2.

BREAKDOWN: One thing readers can take to the bank is when Parrott is presenting an ending to a chapter, readers can expect big moments. There is no shortage of those in this issue. The set-up builds off Dylan's desperation to not only find a way to win, but fill the void left by his father. Dylan is still very much in the learning phase of his career and actions he does reflect that. However, seeing that one character’s actions and consequences is a major turning point in Dylan's journey. The stakes have always been high but seeing Dylan react to this is a moving moment and one that connects him to an emotional he's been blocking off: caring. Readers finally see a break in his armor, setting up for a monster character change to come. Parrott plays right into the impassioned response to what transpires with Hellbent and runs with it into the closing of the book. The writing has always been well structured and once the key moments hit, readers can’t help but become entangled with Dylan and what plays out next.

Abel delivers on elevating the important moments to greater heights. When Rogue Sun finally hits the dance, readers are gifted a near full page shot of the young hero flying in for the save. This plays off Hellbent talking to his hostages at the dance. The entire time readers can only see one of his eyes glowing but can still read his body language to know the points he is making. The actions scenes move swiftly and convey how high significant the battle for the quill is shaping up to be. That said, the panels showcasing the point in the story that changes everything (“To live by the sword….”) is the one readers will be most impacted with. Abel brings all parties’ involved and their reactions front and center to the audience. They set the pace for the rest of the issue especially when Dylan has more time to reflect on what just happened. Incredible final page to close out an intensely strong finale to the arc.

FINAL POINT: Rogue Sun has been a definition of excellence when it comes to superhero comics due to the consistently impressive work from Parrott, Abel and the rest of their team. Building into this second volume finale, Dylan Siegel has been tested like never before. Issue #12 gives readers shocking moments and huge shifts in status quo that even the most seasoned comic reader can’t help but feel for the young hero on his own personal journey. Highest possible recommendation at the local comic shops this week.

Aric from Dacia and the living armor known as Shanhara join together to make up the individual known as X-O Manowar. On this recent mission, X-O stopped a comet on a collision course to Earth. In destroying the comet, Aric is knocked off course and lands on a planet he christens Scythia. Healing from the comet incident, Aric tries making the most of the new home. It is a weird feeling of peace that comes over being isolated from the modern world of Earth, but Aric enjoys this new world’s silence. However, that joy is short lived as something he thought long removed has reappeared. The Novus Romanus have arrived and look to take out Aric for his armor. Even with his armor wounded, Aric will not be conquered without going down swinging.

The issue kicks off with Aric flying into battle, showing no fear no matter the odds. The Novus Romanus sends their forces to engage. Aric goes on the offensive and holds his own. By the way of their attack, Aric realizes this feels all too planned out. Meanwhile, the crew of Theodosius I make a call to bring an end to this battle. The Romans send THYRA ANTIUS into the fray. With one barrage of a projectile weapon, Aric and Shanhara suffer insurmountable damage and are taken prisoner of the Novus Romanus.

On board their ship, how does Aric adapt to his latest surroundings? Readers witness the Novus Romanus’s plans start to take shape with Aric now on the defensive trying to survive. It is a place Aric never saw himself being in. The move made by the hosting Romans will throw readers for a big curve ball. It is all part of a few disclosures about what this group is really up to. Heading into the final pages, a surprise character might be the one to turn the odds back into Aric’s favor but the closing page reassures the best laid plans never go off without a hitch.

BREAKDOWN: Cloonan and Conrad craft an interesting take on Aric with him being on the defensive for the majority of this issue. The threat of the Novus Romanus Legion is one that plays back into Aric’s beginnings with the Vine all those years ago. Introducing a new threat like THYRA ANTIUS makes an immediate impact. The writing team plays into this new challenge by shaking Aric’s confidence with the damage done to Shanhara. His reaction takes his character back to basics and sets up for an engaging take on the character. The final moments of the issue set things in motion with that surprise assist. Where this ultimately leads is still up in the air but it works well in the short term. Solid moment to close the issue out on with what’s looming immediately ahead.

Sharp continues the excellent art details for this saga. The action sequences come across with a strong, distinct feel. Readers will be able to pick up on the intensity of these panels instantly. The full page panel of Aric and Shanhara being severely wounded leaps off the page with its’ detail. Sharp uses a unique set-up with panels in depicting the Romanus’ ship, using 6-8 short ones to establish those portions of the story. The Romanus’ conversation with Aric on the ship is another big moment that Sharp sets up well, using shorter panels to present the story. Very direct final full page panel to conclude events out with leaving very little imagination where things are heading in the near future.

FINAL POINT: Valiant Entertainment’s franchise player sets back into the spotlight with a solid follow-up to the debut issue. Cloonan, Conrad, Sharp and the team challenge Aric of Dacia at his core level, which shows reader is it the suit that makes the hero or the hero that makes the suit. NO/ONE #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of PARLAY POINTS, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are following the latest chapter in the saga that is simply defined as “Who Is No/One?” but is so much more than simple. The ground breaking event coming out of comic’s most exciting line: The Massive-verse (from Black Market Narrative) has taken readers by storm with its’ multi-media approach. Issue #1 sold out on first day release of distribution forcing an immediate second printing. The companion podcast “Who Is No One” starring Patton Oswalt and Rachael Leigh Cook has been a runaway hit and the additional social accounts like “The Drop” have elevated this comic into a whole other level. One month later, it’s time to check out the latest chapter!

NO/ONE #2 by Kyle Higgins (RADIANT BLACK), Brian Buccellato (Detective Comics), Geraldo Borges & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou for Image Comics via Black Market Narrative sets forth to dive deeper into the enigma that is Richard Roe and the shadow looming over the city of Pittsburgh. Let’s not wait any longer and dive right in, shall we?

NO/ONE #2

Pittsburgh has been dealing with “The Accountability Killer” mystery since May of 2022. In a little over a year, the city has dealt with a rising body count, copycat killers and a public broken down from the actions of “Richard Roe” aka Aaron Kern. Kern is behind bars but another victim has been killed with all signs pointing to No/One.

Louis Capel was found dead at an art exhibit. Capel was on No/One’s radar previously. Detectives August Singh and Kate Harper are on the case per Chief Mixon. Assistant chief Ben Kern (Aaron’s father) has his own reasons for investigating. Pittsburgh Ledger Editor Teddy Barlow and reporter Julia Paige are reporting on the case & using a podcast to get their findings out to the masses. The common thread connecting them all is a vigilante running across the rooftops. The question has become “Who is No/One” as Aaron Kern is residing at the Allegheny County Jail. Ben Kern meets with him after Capel’s death and after running into his estranged son Michael. Post meeting Ben is attacked by a mysterious figure and is saved by No/One himself! However, shortly there after, Michael is murdered in the street and more questions are raised.

The story now shifts to April 2023. Chief Mixon arrives at the home of Ben Kern, who is returning to work. During the car ride, Mixon holds nothing back as he asks Ben to step down. The recent events with Michael adds more fuel to the public fire. Ben is hesitant to listen to the Chief, but the conversation is interrupted by the police dispatch. Another body has been found in the form of Three Rivers University head football coach Nathan Cade. Four shots to the chest. Note left behind. The same calling card of No/One.

As the players take their place in the story, readers attention is directed back to the crime scene where Detectives Singh and Harper are asking possible witnesses questions. The interrogation is stopped when an officer sees a figure looming around: NO/ONE! The police are in hot pursuit! Can No/One outrun the law yet again? Readers are in for a treat as they see the vigilante have a formal confrontation with the police. The outcome sets up another series of events as Ben Kern pays someone another visit looking for more answers. This all builds towards a surprise final series of event that closes out this chapter. A shocking action hits the last page, leaving readers astounded to what they’ve just witnessed.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Buccellato delves deeper into the “Accountability Killer” with a very well-paced issue. Readers get a personal insight into what Ben Kern is going thru after the loss of his son Michael. Seeing him weather the public outcry about what his family is connected to has been one thing, but adding the weight of losing a child has pushed Ben to his boiling point. This is reflected later in the book with a conversation that fully illustrates the anger he’s going thru. The writers keep readers guessing with the overall picture but never let up on the suspense of the story. The Segway into showing the latest victim finally gives readers the first physical encounter between No/One and the police which doesn’t disappoint. It gives a solid break to the drama encompassing Ben while building up the latest event surrounding the city on edge.

Borges brings the stoic brave face of Ben Kern to readers multiple times during this issue The initial conversation with Chief Mixon gives a glimpse of how Ben is reacting and driven to ending this mystery once and for all. The emotional toll comes into play in the later part of the issue as Borges lets loose on Ben’s reaction to the events transpiring. This issue does have more action than readers have seen thus far in the series. There is a fantastic chase sequence involving No/One and the police that delivers nothing but a shot of adrenaline to the story. With how strong tensions have been, the scene plays out superbly to connect readers to how dangerous the police feel about No/One. There is much to enjoy with this issue.

FINAL POINT: The saga of the “Accountability Killer” swings focus onto one character’s reaction to events that keeping testing his patience and will. Higgins, Buccellato, Borges and the rest of the team do not let a panel go to waste with excellent writing and art. The story constructs to a jaw-dropping close making this an issue you simply can’t pass up on New Comic Book Day.

Dom’s life turns upside down on a fateful route one night. Being a truck driver, Dom has seen his fair share of odd things on the highways but nothing could prepare him for what this haul was dealing with. After helping a couple after a fatal car crash, Dom tries helping Beverly aka Birdie with what’s happened. A mysterious object appears to have caused the accident. When Dom approaches it, a green flash ensues and the pair is transported away to a new world. Once they arrive there, faceless beings are coming for the object. Dom and Birdie fight their way out of the situation, protecting the object and trying to piece together what’s happened!

As this issue opens up, Dom and Birdie are traveling down the highway still processing what has happened. The conversation centers around what Birdie and her fiancée were doing on the road and where are they now. As they drive, they see more faceless figures standing around a familiar truck-stop. The pair pulls over and go to investigate. The area is vacant with mindless beings just standing around. As the pair goes inside, they don’t see anything. However, Birdie takes one look out the window and sees a frightening sight: it’s the world they know! As she runs outside, the vacant space returns…..

As they go back inside, Dom and Birdie are not prepared for what they find. There’s an enigmatic individual sitting in a booth. What answers does this person have for the pair? Can he explain where they are? Readers get some insight to what’s going on but as the story progresses, Dom and Birdie find themselves enwrapped into another situation that they can’t explain. The final image of this issue proves without a shadow of a doubt that the story has only just started to hit the gas!

PHANTOM ROAD #2

BREAKDOWN: Lemire keeps readers on the edge with what is turning out to be one hell of a story. Lemire takes the two leads into uncharted territory and their banter definitely reflects that. Neither knows what to expect and there is trepidation in their words. Dom is trying to assess everything while Birdie is desperate in finding anything the resembles the way things were. The conversation between the pair and the figure at the diner gives some clarity onto what’s happening but still keeps the aura of wonder very vivid. The pacing moves at a swift rate but the final act throws a great curve into an already puzzling story. The closing moments bring up feeling of “what just happened” and readers won’t be able to help themselves but become further invested in what’s going on here.

PHANTOM ROAD #2

Walta crafts a gritty and dark tone throughout this issue. The scenes at the rest stop feel cold and distant. Bellaire on the coloring helps to amplify those scenes. Even when there’s chances of cracking the mystery, the tone never changes. The emotions shown from Dom and Birdie when they meet the stranger come across as one would expect in their situation. Fear, frustration and anxiety fill those panels. The final act sets things up for the shocking twists in the closing moments. It builds up the tension while keeping readers guessing to the surprise at the end. Excellent final parting image to send readers out with.

FINAL POINT: Lemire, Walta, and the team take readers further down the dark highway with an excellent second chapter. The world of Dom and Birdie is filled with shocking turns and a thrilling puzzle that has only begun to show its’ true form. This is a book you don’t want to miss on New Comic Book Day!

If you’re just checking this series out, the world as you know it has vastly changed. The entire population has powers…EVERYONE! One hundred and fifty years after this has happened and the landscape has changed. Through this new environment, readers have met Kasa Fain, her brother Adam, Gargarin, Toy, who has pyrotechnic powers, and the nearly impenetrable Ruth to name a few. With danger lurking around every turn, can Kasa (even with her evolving powers as a Null) keep the people she cares about safe or will they succumb to the Breaklands they live in?

The season premiere kicks off with Gargarin speeding away with an unconscious Adam, narrating his actions. Feeling that there’s one way to escape this reality of “the Break”, Gargarin talks thorough his actions. As Gargarin takes Adam through the terrain, readers see a huge image that appears to be Shining City. Once they approach, an unseen attack forces them to stop. Chocking to death, Gargarin makes a plea for the voice talking claiming he can find the null. The attack stops and the pair are let into the city. The Magister confronts them and takes Adam into medical treatment. Gargarin claims Rask, who has been the imposing antagonist of this series, was behind this. However, the Magister doesn’t believe him and takes Gargarin as prisoner!

Meanwhile, Toy and Ruth are travelling with an unconscious Kasa in the back seat. During their conversation concerning Rask, Kasa wakes up confused and asking about her brother. Toy updates her about Gargarin’s actions. With Rask and the Kingdom now looking for Kasa, the future looks bleak. Readers get to witness the major players advance towards the endgame. Will Gargarin survive returning to the Shining City? What levels is Rask willing to go to? Can Kasa save her brother? There are many thoughts coming out of this issue with a finale sequence that shows this conclusion has only just begun.

BREAKDOWN: Jordan hits the ground running with the season premiere. New readers might be a bit lost at first with what is unfolding but can pick things up quickly. Gargarin’s story showed how the Magister is seeing Adam as a weapon for what lies ahead. His actions come across cold and vindictive to the plans he has involving Adam. It mirrors what Rask has planned out for Kasa. With having two people as perceived as powerful as they are, Jordan sets them the brother and sister as pawns to be used in a much grander scale later. Pacing gives readers enough time to connect (or reconnect for longtime readers) with the cast that as things move quickly, there still is enough time to become invested in the final play.

Tyasseta brings a very clean and energetic style to the book. The full page visual of Shining City is one that jumps out when reading this issue. It gives readers a full idea into why Gargarin is so desperate to get back inside with the detailed panels. Once Adam has been taken into medical treatment/custody, the switch to the pink coloring when using his powers is a noticeable touch that works. The panels with Rask also are noteworthy. Seeing Rask’s rage boil up to unleashing his power onto his followers makes a statement while giving a dramatic build thrown in. Kasa’s time in the book captures the panic she feels when realizing what Gargarin has done. The emotional outbursts continue with a very direct point once Adam realizes he’s still missing his sister. This all helped illustrate the interest in the siblings. Great final panel to set things in motion heading towards the season/series conclusion.

For this entry, we’re checking out a debut fantasy series from Image Comics featuring a writer/artist that has been crushing it on fantastic books like Frank Miller’s Pandora, RADIANT PINK and INKBLOT. Stoneheart #1 by EMMA KUBERT introduces readers to the wildly imaginative world of Shayde Whisper, a character that is sure to have fans talking. The mystery behind Whisper and the land of Athea is about to unfold so let’s not delay any longer and check out what’s happening, shall we?

The story opens up with a map of Athea, breaking down the important areas of the land. Excellent way to introduce the new landscape to readers with definitive points of interest to keep eyes on.

From here, The Paladins of the North Estron Kingdom are holding court concerning the fate of a figure who has created a polarizing reaction. The banter is confrontational amongst the council known as the Council Of Might. The reactions are very different in deciding on the young woman’s punishment. Some say help her, some say exile her from the kingdom. This ends with a decision from Chieftain Orphidian, who has heard enough. She summons the accused known as Shayde Whisper to face the council. Whisper is led in via chains to face the group. Readers see there is a voice talking with her and seems to have an influence on what has transpired. In a fit of rage, Whipser (also known as Paladin Stoneheart) breaks free but is subdued quickly. With this latest action, the council makes their decision and exile Stoneheart from the kingdom!

A man walks up and appears to mindwipe her thoughts, resulting in her waking up in a carriage heading towards the Lightspring Canyon of Etrana Kingdom in Athea. Whisper appears to be facing the new place with optimism and excitement. It’s a far cry from the dangerous being the Council thought stood before them. Once arriving in town, Whisper hits the ground running establishing a new life and career. However, as the story unfolds, readers see that Whisper’s past might not be done with her.

What new dangers now lurk in her new hometown? How far can she run from her past? Who is behind the influencing voice. The final act grabs readers along for the ride as Whisper’s new stat quo is established with mystery looming in the shadows and an action that will have big ramifications moving forward.

BREAKDOWN: Kubert is writing and drawing this series, presenting fans with a captivating tale with a lead character’s secret as the driving point. For being a debut issue, Kubert take the time to introduce all the major players with caption boxes, noting their ages as well. This plays into the council’s decision to exile Whisper out of the Estron Kingdom. Readers see the differences of the elders versus the younger members factoring in the choice of punishment. Once the story shifts to the LightSpring Canyon, Kubert spends a solid amount of time to forge the beginning friendship between Whisper and the local Blacksmith which makes the events of the final act much more impactful. Pacing works well to move the story forward without tipping off too much. The conclusion ends things with a unique style cliffhanger but one work to add more questions going to the next issue. It’s an excellent way to have readers interest spiking even more from this debut issue.

The art reflects the mystical backdrop to this story. Great use of the black and white coloring for the Estron Kingdom moments while establishing the voices with the turquoise and red color blocks for the voices. Once the story moves locations and goes to full color, Kubert brings to life a vibrant energy reflecting Whisper’s endless positivity. Her reactions to the events happening made a connection with the readers. The new landscape has a certain charm to it with its’ various residents making it noteworthy. Even with all the world building, there are some excellent action scenes which play into a bigger role heading to the final act. Speaking of that act, things move pretty quickly but Kubert never lets the emotions slide as the events unfold. Readers won’t be disappointed with how things conclude as they’re left with much to ponder with anticipation as this fantasy tale is only beginning to start its’ journey.

Greg Lockard, who readers know from his graphic novel Liebestrasse, returns to Comixology Originals with a brand new story. For TRICK PONY, Lockard is joined by Anna David, Lucas Gattoni and Will Dennis for a tale about one man’s journey facing his past to find his future. Let’s take a closer look at what’s unfolding with this story, shall we?

The story begins with a crowd shuffling into a rodeo. The PA announcer is getting them hyped up introducing “The sweetheart of the rodeo….Jimmy Thomas!” The vibe is Jimmy is just pushing thru as his best days are long gone. As he rides his horse into a flaming circle, Jimmy is thrown off the horse upon landing. Waking up to a doctor checking him over, Jimmy is told to stop horse-riding as one more fall could prove deadly. Defiantly, Jimmy ignores the advice. At this moment, Jimmy is told by Gram, the rodeo manager that his mother called with bad news about his father. He’s in the hospital and things do not sound good. Jimmy acts unfazed by this news and is only focused on going to party after the show.

With the drinks flowing, Jimmy brushes off calling his mother back and sets out to party the night away. He’s approached by a reporter in the bar for a cover story. Jimmy escapes the crowd with him and starts a conversation. The topic shifts to Jimmy’s future in the business, which Jimmy evades to only get more tequila. As the night moves forward, so does Jimmy’s partying. From drinking, dancing and making out with a gentleman acquaintance, Jimmy makes the most of the night. This leads to a surprise move a Jimmy finds his horse, Emmylou and ventures to see his parents while figuring out his future.

From the city, Jimmy and Emmylou make their way to Silver Creek. As he makes a stop to splash some water on hi face, Emmylou becomes scared as a walking coyote (with Jimmy’s notable 2 different colored eyes) appears to be stealing his satchel. A chase ensues which leads to Jimmy wrestling the creature down only to have the tides turned. At this moment, Jimmy is taken back to his youth and beginnings in the rodeo. Readers witness as Jimmy does a ride but his fellow rider/boyfriend Zeke doesn’t fare as well. Zeke is injured from the ride and can’t try riding until a few surgeries happen (at best). During this time, their love is challenged by Jimmy’s success and offers to leave for the big show. Zeke ultimately ends things for the two and Jimmy snaps back to “reality” where the creature leads them to shelter for the night. On this journey, the creature shifts into a dog named Casey and they arrive at the doorstep of Casey’s owner, who offers shelter from an upcoming storm. Sparks begin to fly between the owner and Jimmy. Even with the passionate moment, Jimmy is still thinking about the past with Zeke.

At this stage, readers see another figure appear before Jimmy. This encounter leads Jimmy down a more dangerous path as he keeps flashing back to other moments with Zeke. What do these visions mean? How do they try into the present? Will Jimmy get back to his parents or be lost in his own dark journey? Readers will get to ride along with Jimmy as he faces his past legacy as the tale takes quite a few detours before ending up at its’ fulfilling conclusion with Jimmy’s future defined.

Breakdown: Lockard shapes the story of Jimmy Thomas as a defining statement of how love can conquer all. The novel is broken into a few key places backing that statement up. Jimmy’s love of the rodeo is a driving point of his character and one he refuses to walk away from even though it may kill him. Jimmy’s love of family is another point as that becomes his drive to race against time to see his father. That said, those loves fail in comparison to his love of Zeke and the emotional toll it takes on him to escape from its’ demise before wrestling with its closure before moving on. The self exploration Lockard sets Jimmy on to unlock captures readers as they see him battle to find the one love that ultimately wins him. There is no clear-cut path to that answer with many stops along the way in reflecting the past to set forth the future. Mixing in elements such as guides like “coyote” made for unique twists in Jimmy’s path. The ending doesn’t miss the landing as it leaves readers with a definitive answer to where Jimmy’s heart lies now.

David combines fantasy imagery in with the realistic look at Jimmy’s journey into his own vision of love. The transformation of the coyote into the dog was a rime example of this. It also showed how Jimmy was dealing with his memories of his times with Zeke, losing himself in those moments. Another great Segway into his flashbacks involves a near full page panel involving lightning to send him back into his own memories of an argument with Zeke. These are balanced out with vivid scenery as Jimmy treks back to his parents on horseback. Davis makes these panels stand out with brighter colors to set the tone of happiness in contrast to hiding his emotions with his partying lifestyle with blue colors. Excellent final panel to close the novel out with a lasting image for readers.

After being banished from the afterlife by her aunt Adira, Jessica Harrow’s life as a reaper has become more complicated. From the initial moment where she crossed over into the land of the living chasing a runaway soul to learning her father is the being known as Death, Jessica’s (after)life has become complicated with reveal after reveal. After Death and The End, a being who makes sure life and death are balanced, destroy each other, there’s a big power vacuum in the afterlife.

Now stationed in Las Vegas, Jessica (along with fellow banished reapers/friends Eddie and Marcel), something strange is happening with people having a red marking appear on their foreheads and no one can die now, no matter how badly they are sick or hurt. Outside forces are plotting to make moves but it appears all signs point to Jessica being responsible. Oh yeah, Did we forget Lilah, her human mother in prison now knows?

This issue kicks off seeing Jessica’s mother in the middle of a prison riot. The inmates and guards have the mysterious red markings on them, but Lilah is fighting her way thru all while narrating a letter sent from Death before his demise. With a clue pointing to New Mexico, Lilah escapes and leaves a burning jail in her wake. Meanwhile in the afterlife, Adira is trying to calm the masses of reapers who see no dead souls. Adira gives them a name “responsible”: Jessica Harrow!

As for Jessica, she’s been confronted by the sisters of Fate, who explain the situation at hand to her. Jessica is not exactly on board with their information, but it appears there might be one way out of this and it means nothing good! What is the new situation presented to her? Is she willing to accept what has been proposed to her? Does she have a choice? Readers find out quick as the closing panel shows that more parties are interested in Jessica and her friends than they thought!

Phillips is starting to put some of the mystery pieces together while keeping readers guessing at what’s happening here. Taking a small break from the red markings epidemic other than the riot worked well. Seeing how Jessica’ mother is now involved adds a new dynamic to the current story. Phillips instantly makes her debut feel huge with having her fight thru a prison riot unscathed. The cutthroat actions of Adira are always a great counter to Jessica’s character. Seeing how she handles being made Afterlife enemy #1 will be fun to watch. The situation with the sisters of Fate is an intriguing one as it was one readers won’t see coming. Solid final page to close out on. Readers will be curious to see where that leads moving forward.

How cool is Flaviano’s art? Seriously. From the architecture of Adira’s throne room to the astral plane of the Sisters of Fate, Flaviano and Renzi gives this book such a different and energetic feel. There truly isn’t anything like it on the market in my opinion. The panel set up with the “dream” borders was a great touch. The only thing missing was the usual music lyrics factored in by Napolitano, but this issue had much to enjoy regardless of that.

Ever since making her Image Comics debut in the pages of 2022’s SUPERMASSIVE one-shot event which kicked off the genesis of comics’ most exciting universe: The Massive-Verse (with its’ flagship book RADIANT BLACK), fans have been eagerly waiting for the solo adventures of Cássia Costa to begin. The story kicks off with Cássia Costa heading to the Helix Campus, a prestigious high school in Apex City with her mother. Driving along, Cássia questions her mother’s story about being on a monorail. She mentions how she was there meeting a source for a story about museum artifacts. Suddenly, they were attacked by a frightening creature. Luckily, a figure bursts through the train car for the save. That figure is…. INFERNO GIRL RED! readers get treated to a great action sequence with foreshadowing into a greater threat looming.

During the car ride, Cassia’s mother gets a phone call about a reporting job but is turned down due to her IGR stories being considered untrue. This worries Cassia as she arrives at the campus. her mother reassures her she will be fine and to take full advantage of this opportunity. That said, Cassia make her way into a class, where she meets her future roommate Harriette and Doctor Janine Caro, a famous engineer, physicist and owner of the campus. With a brief class discussion and syllabus of expectations, Cassia settles in to school life with a trip to the library.

Along this trip, an unexpected event happens: Apex City is removed from its’ foundation?! A cloaked figure stands in amusement watching the move unfold as it appears the staff wielded is the catalyst. Cassia watches from inside the library as a red object meteors into her path and attaches an armband to her. From this moment on, her life will never be the same.

What direction does Cassia’s life go now? What is the grave situation unfolding? While catching up with her mother, Cassia knows what she is going to have to do. The question now becomes: Is she ready for her destiny? Readers sit ringside as a new hero rises to the challenge while questioning this new direction with a perfect final panel to close events off with.

Groom plays heavy into the themes of hope versus hopeless with this debut. Cassia comes across as a character still trying to find her way while picking up a responsibility she doesn’t think or want to handle. Yet, readers witness how she rises to the challenge at hand because of the confidence instilled in her by her mother. Their dynamic is the backbone of this series as Cassia tries improving their situation by the opportunity given at the school. Her mother puts her setbacks aside to build Cassia up which instantly connects with readers about how important their bond is. The pacing works well to allow the major players of this story to establish themselves early. Dr. Caro and Harriette provide a solid balance for Cassia from the heroic world she’s about to embark in. The action sequences move fast but don’t overtake Cassia’s trail by fire in her new persona. Seeing the original IGR in action gave readers enough to form an idea of what to expect with the powers that there wasn’t a huge need to have Cassia re-tell it through her eyes. This issue had action, drama and intrigue, a wining formula to hook readers in for the long haul.

D’urso and Monti’s art meshes up perfectly with the writing of the story. The world of Apex City feels vibrant and full of possibilities right from the two page panel when Cassia and her mom are driving into the city. The campus had a distinct vibe going on as well. It never felt like “just another school”. The bonding moments between Cassia and her mom also jump off the panels as seeing how supportive they are of each other is such a driving plot point. With all the world building going on,nothing takes away from the moment readers see Cassia in full IGR costume. There is no way the full page panel isn’t made into a poster as it drops a clear exclamation point that a hero has arrived! The action panels move swiftly and readers can sense the tension unfolding as both IGR’s showcase their powers in various manners. Excellent final image to close this chapter out of, leaving much possibilities for where the story goes from here.
