Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast. For this entry, we’re taking another trip into the life and times of Liam Malone via Comixology Originals. Census #2 by Marc Bernardin (Fatman Beyond w/ Kevin Smith), Adam Freeman, Sebastián Piriz, Bernardo Brice and Sarah Litt continues the saga of Liam’s new job with the Census Bureau. It sounds normal, but it’s everything but that. Let’s take a deeper look at the latest issue, shall we?

The life and times of Liam have gone in some weird directions lately. Working for the Census Bureau should seem like a more “normal” job but the clientele Liam has to count is not fitting that description. Last issue, Liam wound up in a dire situation involving some demons. This issue, his journey starts off in a pub. However that pub is filled with Leprechauns. Searching for the name “Shamus” is proving to be a issue. On the bright side, Liam seems to be picking up at his new job & finds a noteworthy solution to his dilemma. After a quick peek into his home life, Liam sets out on his next assignment.

With tablet in hand, Liam steps into a small bodega. After his “ice-breaker” goes wrong with the owner and young clerk, Liam is sent out of the store with no success. Becoming very determined, Liam does some investigating on his own. After confronting the young boy and remembering talk of “wishing” mentioned, Liam is still left with some questions. For better or for worse, he now goes to his boss for some “professional advice”. With that knowledge in hand, Liam returns to the bodega. When he arrives, is there ever a big surprise waiting for him! Readers will be just as shocked as Liam is to what lies ahead. It’s a great twist that fits perfectly in line with this very unique tale. The final image of the book will draw a positive reaction out of the readers to end this story on.

Bernardin and Freeman present another enjoyable tale within these pages. Liam is an easy character to get behind with his “loveable loser” persona. The humor is spot-on point this issue as well. There has been noticeable growth with his character this time as he maneuvers thru the wild workplace environment of his job. Liam’s most notable skill is adapting on the fly. There are two cases in this tale that he’s had to think fast to complete tasks. The initial shock of last issue’s first assignment is long gone. For being only a week into the new job, becoming comfortable in this landscape is huge. It is a very organic pace to his story which takes nothing away from the overall picture. Seeing a piece of Liam’s home life grounded the story briefly but enough that it was a solid change of pace before stepping into the ever-changing world he now works in.

Piriz delivers Liam’s story with a great balance of self-loathing and somewhat optimism. The facial expressions he has when dealing with his roommates and bus driver stand out this issue. With all that negativity around him, Liam still focuses on his job at hand. It helps to sell Liam’s plight to the readers as a character you can’t help but root for in some capacity. This story does go into some wild territory but with Piriz’s art, it hits all the marks needed. Liam’s world is more than it seems and the team here crafts it to the readers with a fantastic delivery.

Overall, Census #2 is entertaining with it’s charm and outrageous story. Liam Malone’s life has well-timed humor moments mixed in with a never mundane atmosphere. Bernardin, Freeman, Piriz & the team don’t have a sophomore slump with this comic, so make sure to check it out when it hits Comixology this week.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! For this entry, The season of “Scottober” has officially arrived! We’re checking out the latest edition to the impressive line of comics from SCOTT SNYDER for Comixology Originals. In the course of a year, fan have been treated to We Have Demons (w/art from Greg Capullo). Clear (w/ Francis Manupal), Night Of The Ghoul (w/ Francesco Francavilla), Barnstormers (w/ Tula Lotay), Canary (w/ Dan Panosian) and Dudley Datson & the Forever Machine (w/ Jamal Igle). Previously all were only available on Comixology but We Have Demons and now Night Of The Ghoul are available via print from Drak Horse Comics. The books speak for themselves in quality and content. Now on the anniversary, Snyder is ready to drop the latest book to an already star-studded line-up.

The ODPHpod talked with Scott a few months back and as soon as this book was mentioned, we’ve had it on our radars. Book Of Evil #1 reunites Snyder with a familiar creator: Jock, who fans know their work on Batman: Black Mirror, to welcome in the next phase from one of the hottest line of books in comics. Let’s not wait any longer and jump into this “Book”, shall we?

Book Of Evil #1 - on sale October 4th

The world portrayed here is vastly different than what we currently perceive as “normal”. About 92% of the world’s population is now born as psychopaths This isn’t an exaggeration. This isn’t for shock value. This is the new reality that a 12 yr old boy named Homer lives in. Why the world is like this is very unclear at the this point, but the “average day” is made crystal clear to the readers from the opening page!

This issue is told by Homer as a journal entry. Readers can feel his sense of dread and fear as he’s riding a bus with an older woman…who’s foaming at the mouth to attack him should the bus cross the “Yolk Lines.” With each breath, she gets ready to attack Homer with scissors. Trembling with fear, Homer holds out hope to make it through in one piece. The moment never stops escalating until the bus shifts to the right side of the line. Just like that, the woman sits down. What feels like an event to the reader is just an average bus ride home for a 12 yr old in this new humanity.

As Homer continues his journal, he breaks down what has happened. In the 1960’s, children were changing as they hit their adolescence range (14-15 yrs old). This change was anything but average as their behavior had psychopathic tendencies. This was never a phase as it continued to spread throughout most the population, with no clear cut reason why this has happened. The remaining 8% are considered “animals” or less than Human. Homer is one of the 8%. He stays in “The Yolk”, a section designated for the animals to live in. With no parents to watch him, Homer stays there with his friends Blake, Elliot and Milton along with his older brother Poe.

To complicate things even more, Homer’s world is rocked with another obstacle to overcome. What exactly is that you ask? And what about a mysterious cartoon strip have to do with all of this, if anything? Readers will have these answered and also be waiting to see what Homer and his friends have to overcome next with a final image that gives some clarity on where this story is heading next.

Absolutely impressive first issue. Snyder crafts a world where insanity runs free and normalcy is all but forgotten. The words “New Normal” are often thrown around but with this volatile landscape, defining it as “normal” is anything but. Having the story told through Homer’s eyes via journal entry was a great play of storytelling. Every emotion could be felt within the 12 yr old’s words. It is truly fascinating how at such a young age (with impending doom coming when he matures) Homer is able to face this world and keep some hope. The story itself is a bleak and disturbing tragedy in the making. There’s no other way to say it, but Snyder never loses sight on how Homer braves the challenges and continues to press forward. In a sense, this is his own odyssey to return back to a time he’s only heard about but never lived thru: a normal life. Pacing was excellent and that final page’s words will haunt readers until next issue.

Jock’s art gives greater impact to the story when his imagery appears. Remember, this book is told in a journal entry format so there’s not traditional panels each page. Emma Price, who designed this book, did a phenomenal job with presenting it. The usage of certain colors like red (discarded terms) and yellow (“Animals”/Yolk references) in the dialogue added more layers to the story. When the images hit, Jock really drives home the horror and bleak aspect of this world. From the older woman’s rage on the bus to the almost optimism in the facial expressions of Homer’s friends waiting when he gets to their apartment, Jock’s art pops off the pages to deliver on making these moments connect with the readers. The usage of yellow thru the apartment is a great add-on to the story being told thru Homer’s eyes. There’s much to enjoy within the creative team’s work here.

Overall, Book Of Evil welcomes readers int a strange, dark world thru the eyes of normalcy’s last figures. Snyder, Jock and Price amp up on the creativity with their presentation while doubling down on the true horror of this world and the story about to be told. You simply can’t miss this book when it drops on Comixology this week. Highly recommended.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of this chapter of one of Comixology Originals’ best series. The All-Nighter #10 by Chip Zdarsky, Jason Loo, Paris Alleyne, Aditya Bidikar & Allison O’Toole has been a fantastic read when a simple team running an all night diner is very much more than they seem. As they tried living in plain sight amongst humans, Alex became a vigilante with the motto “With Great powers comes Great responsibilty” as a possible inspiration. From that moment, the world of Ian, Cynthia, Joy and Alex wrap turned upside down. The first chapter (now out in print by Dark Horse Comics) had game-changing moments & chapter 2 hasn’t let up on the imaginative story. Let’s take a closer look and see how this chapter wraps up, shall we?

The All-Nighter #10 - On Sale September 27th

Lazaruk and the “Justice Angels” are almost at the end completing their goal. The Takers, who oversee the actions of the supernatural, are arriving on the scene. With Joy (“the Youngest”) presenting the case to stop this invititation, Lazaruk agrees…but plans on offering Andrea, the human ally to Ian’s team as a sacrifice. Luckily, Ian and Cynthia return to the situation to try stopping Lazaruk and the Justice Angels once and for all. Readers will be locked in for the happy “family” reunion, but all parties involved have little tme to celebrate. With Andrea wounded and dying, Alex (“The Teenaged Hero”) and Joy make a rush to get her medical help. However Lazaruk isn’t willing to let go of his plans. With a chase at hand, the action picks up and so does the consequences….

Who survives this outcome? Who’s life is changed forever? How does the family stand after the Takers make their approach? Readers will get answers to all of these questions and then some. The conclusion is fitting for the series which never lets up for keeping the audience engaged from start to finish. The final image will have fans talking and speculating. Get ready for one hell of a ride.

Zdarsky ends this chapter with strong emotional points. Without spoiling too much, the choices and aftermath of one character’s story will hit readers extremely strong. It’s fitting for where their journey has taken them. Even with its supernatural setting, the story is a superhero one at the end of the day. There is good vs evil and not everything has a happy ending. Zdarsky mixes in the character pints well with the fast pace of the opening. The closing slows things down as things appear to head into an entire new direction. Readers will not be let down by its ending but have to wait to see if this is truly the end.

Loo balances out the action with the drama flawlessly. With the beginning of this book, the pace was moving fast and Loo’s depiction matched that with big action scenes. As things slowed down once the end of the second act happened, Loo switched gears to bring out the emotional toll it took on certain characters of the book without making it feel too sudden. The use of the 9 panel page was perfect to start the transition to the third act on. The quality of this book never fails to impress.

Overall, The All-Nighter #10 ends this current story with a highly satisfying conclusion. Zdarsky, Loo and the team deliver on the big moments and ever-changing direction of this “family’s” journey. Make a point to check this book out on Comixology and in Print via Dark Horse Comics when available (Volume 1 is out now at the LCS).

Readers might know Marc Bernardin’s name from the Eisner award nominee “Adora and The Distance” along with his work in podcasting (Fatman Beyond w/ Kevin Smith) and TV (Star Trek: Picard). Census #1 by Bernardin, Adam Freeman, Sebastián Piriz, Bernardo Brice and Sarah Litt welcomes readers into the life of Liam Malone and his first day on the job, which is anything but normal. Let’s not waste any more time and jump into this first issue, shall we?

This issue kicks off with with one of the best “You’re probably wondering how I got here” pages in recent memory. Liam is tied up with only his underwear on while 3 demons are standing over him. From here, readers are taken back to the day prior as Liam is going for a job interview. This scenario seems very normal as Liam is talking to a possible employer with a simple job posting: “ Good Pay, Flexible Hours, No Experience Needed”. It sounds too god to be true, especially for someone looking for a win. Liam gets the job with the Census Bureau, which sounds like it will be a simple job. At this stage in life , Liam should know that anything that sounds this perfect is more than likely flawed.

With a tablet in hand, Liam sets out to count the residents of his first assigned address. With should be a routine count in a Brooklyn apartment spins wildly out of control. What starts as a friendly conversation quickly speeds into another moment that our protagonist was not expecting when he signed up for this job. Readers will see how Liam got into the mess in page 1 and if he can find his way out of that crazy scene. The conclusion of this issue will leave readers with a clear sense of where the book is heading and that they need to jump on board now.

Very solid debut issue. Bernardin, (along with Adam Freeman) create a fun beginning on Liam’s journey. The story is great balance with horror and supernatural elements along with well placed shots of comedy mixed in. Those themes rise up more to the reader when referencing the initial first case. Liam’s means to escape is quite the creative one that does cause a laugh out loud moment. No spoilers here, but it’s presented in a way that readers can only see Liam pulling off. The storytelling plays into his awkwardness in dealing with others as a strength. At no point did I feel that the story feel too cliche and it made for an enjoyable welcome into the life and times of Liam Malone.

Piriz’s art brings this story to life with capturing Liam’s ineptness into the new job field he’s entered. The facial expressions being showcased tell much of Liam’s character. Seeing his interactions with one of the residents of his first assignment to his new boss and what’s revealed at the end, Piriz crafts Liam’s conversations with a feel of uncertainty and reluctance. Readers will be able to pick up on this part of his character rather quickly but it’s never something that takes them out of the story. In fact, it’s something that as this series goes forward will become a stronger focus for readers to get behind and root for Liam to win.

Overall, Census #1 provides readers with a great story of self-discovery and unexpected travels through the backdrop of New York City. Bernardin, Freeman, Piriz and the rest of the creative team present readers with the saga of Liam Malone. Where it goes from here is anyone’s guess, but that’s why I feel it will be one that you simply can’t miss reading each month. Make sure to check it out on Comixology this week.

Dudley Datson and The Forever Machine #2 by Snyder, Jamal Igle, Juan Castro, Chris Sotomayor and Tom Napolitano continues to build off it’s highly recommended first issue. How is Dudley faring after the last issue’s cliffhanger? Let’s jump back in for a deep dive on this incredible new book, shall we?

Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine #2 - On Sale September 6th

Dudley Datson’s life is one that is ever-changing. Datson is a young teenager who’s an inventor of “Duds” an L.C.D. integrated fiber clothing. After presenting it with a less than stellar execution, Dudley bears witness to Dr. Shae, his mentor at the Brooklyn Academy of Engineering, defending herself from attackers who are trying to take a valuable watch. Defending is putting things mildly as Dr. Shae is wearing an exoskeleton to fend off these attackers. Now caught up in a situation he’s not ready for, Dudley gets help from an unlikely ally: Daedalus, Dr. Shae’s dog….who apparently can now talk?!

This issue picks up with the attackers now shifting focus towards Dudley. Daedalus shows that not only can he talk, but can handle his own verses these forces. Once one gets the upper hand on Daedalus, Dudley uses some quick thinking to handle the crisis at hand using his own invention. Noticing that his aggressor isn’t human, Datson makes a play to subdue the threat & the pair escape danger.

From here, Datson and Daedalus catch up about what is going on here. With a touch of excitement, Datson is introduced to the Chymical Society. What is the story behind this group? Better yet, What is the origin of Daedalus? How does Dudley fit into this equation? Readers will get those answers plus a final page that will keep them locked in until the next issue drops.

Snyder continues to craft a fun and energetic story with the life of Dudley Datson. The issue explains much of Daedalus and why he is WAY more than he seems. The secrets involved with his character were very surprising and validated on how creative this story is. This book’s storytelling shines when they go all in on focusing readers onto the multi-layered elements of it’s main characters. The dynamic between Daedalus and Dudley is enjoyable and only gets better as the issue progresses forward. “Reluctant Partners” is an understatement but this issue proves there will be many more panels with these two that should make readers very pleased following Dudley’s journey moving forward.

Igle’s artwork continues to impress with the details thrown in this issue. Seeing Daedalus’ story explained thru the timeline was a great segment. Everything down to the panel set-up made that part jump off the page. One of the more fun moments in this book was how the pair accessed the entrance to the Chymical Society. When reading this book, readers can tell how much enjoyment the creators are getting with stories with moments like these. Another stand out final page closes the chapter on this book & readers will be electrified to check out the next issue.

Overall, the adventure of Dudley Datson is just beginning and its’ enthusiastic journey is one not to miss. Snyder, Igle and company push the imagination boundaries with a thrilling chapter that is sure to please. The adventure is just beginning so make sure not to miss out on the latest issue when it drops on Comixology Originals .

For this entry, we’re chcking out a new book under the Comixology Originals line via New Wave Comics. If New Wave comics and Comixology together sound familiar, it’s because you might know The Black Ghost, which is another great book out on this line and it’s season 2 starts this week as well. Blood Oath #1 by Rob Hart, Alex Segura, Joe Eisma, Hilary Jenkins, Jim Campbell, and Heather Antos has a very cool concept: vampires in the prohibition times. Let’s take a longer look at this debut issue and see what’s going on here, shall we?

Blood Oath #1 - On Sale August 30th

The story centers around Hazel Crenshaw and the farm that she runs with her younger sister Geraldine in Staten Island of the 1920’s. What appears to be “small town” energy turns out to have a secret from most going on. Hazel is shipping alcohol out of the farm, which is against the law during this time. Prohibition (sale of alcohol is illegal) is running wild during this time. Surviving by selling in this era is crucial to keeping the lights on at the farm. However, when dealing with the dangers of prohibition, protection is needed. Hazel is confronted by Frankie about more muscle and product but they have an unexpected visitor crash their conversation.

Walt, Geraldine’s boyfriend returns to the farm bloodied and beaten. Walt tells the tale of the ill fated walk the pair was doing when they were attacked by some supernatural individuals that have a vested interest in the product on the farm. Supernatural might be an understatement as readers see a vampire gang attack the pair. How will this factor into Hazel’s plans moving forward? Is she ready for the fight when it's brought to her front door? Readers will get some answers and more raised by the time the issue is completed.

Solid debut issue. Hart and Segura are blending in a lot of elements with the concept here, which isn’t a bad thing. The issue’s strengths are seeing how Hazel reacts to the new threat at her doorstep. Considering the threats at hand, Hazel never falters and remains very calm (as one could be) with everything going on. The Vampire gang will be ones to watch. For making a more brief appearance, they hit the ground running to establish why they’re going to be cause for concern moving forward. Pacing moved things along quickly that never felt super rushed. There’s a lot more questions to be answered moving forward, but this series made a concrete base to work from.

The art captured the time period it was in very well. Eisma presented the horror with the action sequences to give the story a solid look. Never did it feel like things were toned down as a few vampire kills were gory enough to illustrate how dangerous they were. None drove a bigger point home than one last kill in this issue. Hazel’s conversations were also memorable in seeing how she is adjusting to the element of business she’s now apart of. It balanced out the overall story going on and set a nice tempo for where things are heading.

Overall, Blood Oath #1 hits the ground running with a great first issue. Mixing in the supernatural with modern history times is a fresh concept that should lock readers in for the series run. The creative team presents a very fascinating story that will only get more wild as it progresses (and that’s not a bad thing either). Make sure to check this book out on Comixology this week!

For this entry, we’re looking at the penultimate issue of one of the most creative books on the Comixology Originals line. The All-Nighter #9 by Chip Zdarsky, Jason Loo, Paris Alleyne, and Aditya Bidikar shapes up the story for one amazing conclusion. If or whatever reason haven’t checked the story out yet, the first chapter is available in print form via Dark Horse Comics. Let’s take a closer look at how the second chapter is heading everyone’s favorite diner team into its finale, shall we?

Last we saw our vampire group from the Diner, things were looking very bleak. Cynthia has been leading the family since Ian’s disappearance & it has not been an easy road. Joy, the “youngest” of the family took off to reconnect with her real family. That move didn’t go over as good as Joy had hoped. Alex, the “teenage hero” has been trying his best to continue being a super hero, but that has strained much including his relationship with Andrea, a former police officer. Lastly, Ian, who was the leader of this group was imprisoned by Lazaruk, who seeks to take over by posing as “The Justice Angels”, to sneak attack the public on their way to conquer.

This issue picks up with Cynthia working with “Francis” (aka Frankenstein) to free Ian from Lazaruk’s hold. It’s an interesting dynamic but with the stakes this high, alliances are formed to hopefully save the day. Will this duo save Iam beofre it’s too late? Meanwhile, Lazaruk has confronted Joy about joining his regime With the offer of not hiding in shadows as a prize, Joy listens. She is shown Lazaruk’ operation and has many questions. All the while, Alex is investigating Lazaruk as well. Unfortunatly as Alex tries helping someone, Lazaruk and the Justice Angels find him. What will happen now? Can the diner team stop Lazaruk? Will someone not make it until the end? Readers will need to read this issue and find out!

Zdarsky has everything moving very fast heading to the final issue. Lazaruk unveiling his plan and seemingly ready for the opposition was a fun read. From this entire second run, he has been a character making moves but with the end near, Lazaruk has taken his actions up a few notches. The dynamic between Cynthia and Francis was another great element of the story. There is a great moment where the mythos is flipped a bit to show a different side to the character. Every major player had their page-time without feeling rushed or forced. With a finale looming, this should be something special to watch.

Loo continues to design big moments for this final arc. Seeing Francis unleashed as what happened when he tried freeing Ian was out of normal character but illustrated to the reader how high the stakes are for this mission. Seeing the encounter between Lazaruk and Alex was a great introduction to what is coming next issue. Seeing Lazaruk’s plan start to roll will add much more impact for the big closing.

Overall, The All-Nighter #9 sets up the chessboard for a resounding exclamation point for this story. Zdarsky, Loo and company position all the major players for a final confrontation that readers should be counting down the days to read. Make sure to check this out at Comixology this week.

For this entry, The next wave of “Scottober” books via Best Jackett Press shows no signs of a sophomore slump as they have a sure-fire smash on their hands in the form of BarnStormers by Scott Snyder, Tula Lotay, Dee Cunniffe and Richard Starkings. The first issue was a fantastic debut introducing readers into the world of Hawk Baron and his “partner” Tillie. Barnstormers #2 just dropped on Comixology Originals, and this story is one you won’t be able to pass over reading. Let’s take a deeper dove into this issue and see what’s going on, shall we?

When we last saw Hawk E. Baron aka Bix, a former WW1 pilot who’s paying the rent check by performing aerial tricks, took an unexpected turn. Thinking he was finally going to hit a big score, Baron couldn’t hav worse luck. After crashing a wealthy family’s wedding party (literally), Hawk has become a wanted man due to his unexpected partner, Tillie. After she helps Hawk escape the Carlyle property, Tillie hops in Baron’s plane and the pair fly away. Little do they know what lies ahead for them.

This issue jumps in where the pair finally lands after such a dramatic escape. Tillie offers Baron a parting offer as she plans her next move. The move? Crash a wealthy party and steal some food to start. Baron reluctantly goes along after hearing Tillie’s story. In a mix of divine intervention and living in the moment, Tillie divulges to Baron how the wedding wasn’t one of love but of financial convenience as The Carlyles were putting pressure on her family for their land. In her words, When Baron arrived, she took it as a a sign to run. Meanwhile, her former fiancee is making plans of his own to get Tillie and Baron, in the form of Zeke West. Readers get a quick background of him during this issue which is very solid.

From this moment, readers are shown a side of Baron that hasn’t been shown before. What is his big secret? The story shifts back to seeing how Baron becomes more involved in Tillie’s plans. How does the pair escalate things? It’s a perfect set-up for shifting gears in the story and one fans can’t help but become fully entrenched with for the next chapter.

Brilliant issue. Snyder hits two big points in this issue that will grab readers attention for a double take. The first one is Baron’s secret. When the reveal is done, it will catch readers off guard for it’s only in a a quick moment. If you go back and re-read issue #1, you can see how it fits in with a few panels there as well. It also adds another layer into his character. Since we’ve been introduced to Hawk E. Baron, he’s come across as an unlucky pilot trying to find his way. With this revelation, the latter half of the issue carries more weight.

The second big point is Tillie’s endgame. When she explains her motives for leaving the Carlyles, she appears to be a sympathetic character. This changes quickly as they attended the Rollinger party. The further they work thru the party, it becomes clear Tillie has had some plans in motion the entire time. How that fits in the overall story will be such a fun read.

Absolutely stunning art by Lotay and Cunniffe. There was one moment that really stood out to me for being so creative and subtle at the same time. There is a scene where Zeke is getting hired by the Carlyles. How Lotay and Cunniffe crafted the sunlight hitting the window blinds to create the striped shadows came off well. It added a unique feel to the scene. Mixing in the imagery of the Rollinger family business to this time period was great as well. Without spoiling too much, the visions Bix sees here feel to play a bigger factor down the road. Excellent final page to close out this chapter.

Overall, Barnstormers #2 delivers on a fantastic read that readers will be locked in on from the opening page. Snyder, Lotay and company present a multi-layered dive into the unlikely pair and their dangerous adventures. Excellent storytelling and phenomenal art will make this a must-add for your reading list! Don’t delay picking it up.

One of those books was “Canary”, which gave readers an absolute hit with the introduction of Marshall Holt and his investigation into something sinister in 1891 Utah. The book feels like a horror western saga and plays heaving into the latest issue. Canary #2 by Snyder, Dan Panosian, Richard Starkings and Will Dennis moves the story forward with another electrifying chapter. Let’s not waste anymore time and take a deeper look at this book, shall we?

The story of Marshall Holt thus far has been very captivating. With a short time left before retiring, he investigates a brutal murder of a school teacher by a seemingly "innocent” boy. Holt finds out there might be more to this killing than meets the eye. After bringing him in, Holt finds out more bizarre circumstances where “normal” people are committing these deadly attacks. Holt takes a lead to track down a contact with a possible theory, all roads lead towards a haunting place: Canary. Holt reluctantly goes but readers see a flashback sequence where Holt sought out to arrest Hyrum Tell, a killer who’s encounter with Holt has left the lawman rattled when “Canary” is brought up.

This issue picks up where readers see more of the initial encounter between Holt and Tell. Once the flashback is over, Holt is en route to meet Edison Edwards (or Ed-Ed), a rock doctor who might have a theory connecting all these crimes. The theory centers around the Canary Mine. Upon their arrival at the Canary depot, the pair is treated with some hospitality form Mayor Gem, who gives off a very unique energy pertaining to the case at hand. Readers get more insight to what really happened in the Canary mine that plays a big part of the story going on within these pages. However, that takes a step back when Holt and Edwards arrive at “The Gem of The Utah Hills”, Canary. Readers get to meet some of the town’s most noteworthy characters, but none stand out more than Mabel Warren. What is her connection to this case? Readers will find out that answer plus have some great discussions after a final page sets the pace for the next issue perfectly.

Snyder delves more into what composes Azrael William Holt without slowing down too much of the overall story. The flashback sequence during the Mayor’s retelling of Holt’ novel moments connects to readers extremely well. The sequence with Holt and Tell truly translate into a battle of good and evil that fits in perfectly to this story. Once he gets to Canary and starts interacting with Edwards and Warren, Holt starts lowering his guards and connecting on a more personal level than we’ve seen thus far. His complexity of balancing what happened prior in Canary is a very big point of his character. Seeing a break here with what’s to come made for a well-rounded issue.

Panosian’s art crushes this issue. This western horror saga continues to amaze with it’s incredible visuals. The imagery involving the flashback/novel retelling is haunting and adds to the effectiveness of Tell as the main protagonist. Without spoiling, there’s a moment in the book when Holt makes a gruesome discovery after encountering Tell. Panosioan drives the horror factor home with a very few panels. It’s balanced out with moments meeting the residents of Canary and the mysterious Mabel Warren. Readers will have to make their own judgements on her character, but her mannerisms pop out due to the amazing artwork here.

Overall, Canary #2 builds the drama and slowly peels back the layers of the lead character with another can’t miss read. Snyder, Panosian, and their team give the readers excellent storytelling & art to showcase Marshall Holt’s struggle to solve the mystery without losing himself in the process. Don’t miss grabbing this over at Comixology this week.

For this edition, we’re continuing to follow an explosive debut issue on the Comixology Originals line. Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #2 by Stephanie Phillips, Valeria Favoccia, Ellie Wright, Sheelagh D, and Saida Temofonte furthers the return of the popular character created by Mark Dawson. The debut set a high pace, so let’s see how the latest issue shapes up, shall we?

When we last saw Beatrix, she has re-emerged in Japan as a hired assassin. Her latest work was tracking down the killer of many Triad members, known as “Yaomo” or “Demon”. The first round didn’t go the way Rose had planned, but for readers, it delivered on hooking them into this fantastic story.

This issue opens up with a flashback sequence to the moment Rose was betrayed by her team and her family was changed forever. It’s a nightmare that haunts Rose as she recovers from her encounter with the Demon. e is also informed that she’s off the case. However, to no one’s surprise, Rose isn’t letting this one go.

As the story progresses, readers get a glimpse into the Demon’s past and motivation on why she does what she does. This leads into the next target. With the Demon ready to strike, Rose appears to stop her once and for all. The question becomes will she? Readers will get that answer but maybe not the resolution that they are expecting as the final panel in the book will set the stage for the next phase of the book.

Phillips is building towards something very big with this story. Rose’s journey isn’t so simplistic in the sense of just “Vengeance”. Seeing how she is playing the encounter of the confrontation with the Demon was an interesting swerve. Phillips plays Rose’s motives very close that we as readers get lead into some directions unexpectedly. There are no complaints about this what so ever. The pacing is very fast but never a situation of becoming lost in the story. The Confrontation between the two major characters here is excellent and changes everything moving forward. There’s a lot to enjoy with the writing here.

Favoccia turns up the dial with the action sequences here. The battle between Rose and The Demon flows at a very quick pace but reflects the moment perfectly. There is little time to stall during this exchange and every panel gives a serious moment to where the story should be. The flashback sequences didn’t hold back either as readers were treated to great insights when they popped up. There’s a unique vibe to this story and the art brings that to the forefront with ease.

Overall, Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #2 presents another solid issue building towards a combustible ending. Phillips and Favoccia raise the stakes with Rose’s return with a notable twist ending that is sure to have readers buzzing on NCBD! Don’t miss the chance to get this issue!

We have arrived at the conclusion issue for one of the most intriguing tales on the Comixology Originals line. Cold Iron #4 by Andy Diggle, Nick Brokenshire, Triona Farrell, Simon Bowland & Tom Muller has been an engaging tale of a young woman named Kay and her fateful night crossing paths with a lost child named Mona. The story has gone in some fun directions but all roads have now lead us here. Let’s check out the final issue and see how this story ends, shall we?

From supernatural creatures to shady humans with ulterior motives, Kay’s life has been anything but normal since Mona crashed into her life. From saving the child, becoming her protector, dealing with shady characters trying to kidnap Mona and now leading her rescue mission as she (and Kay’s grandmother) were apparently dragged back into the Outworld, Kay’s evolved as an unlikely heroine trying to save the day. Last we saw her, she was making her way to the Drinking Dragon, the opening to the Otherworld. After going under water, she was pulled (by a mysterious hand) thru to the other side.

As she makes her way thru this landscape, Kay encounters more creatures rummaging thru her belongings that were pulled thru when her grandmother’s cottage collapsed thru the ground. Furthering her search, Kay finds more creatures with more items. It’s also alluded to that her grandmother saved her as well. With her lucky horse shoe of Cold Iron and guitar in hand, Kay makes her way to find Mona.

Along the way, Kay encounters a familiar face that reveals some information followed with a confrontation that’s been building. Where does the story go from here? Will Kay be able to Save Mona? What other problems arise in this new world. Readers will get those answers and more with a conclusion that will leave some questions to be asked.

Diggle writes a solid conclusion to this winding tale of magic and discovery. Kay emerges in this last issue as someone who isn’t backing down from destiny. Over the issues, she has become a surprise hero but with this finale, this stands out in the final standoff. This is all done while utilizing one of her strongest abilities that readers hadn’t seen in a while: Playing Music. The resolution of the overall story is a pleasant but fast-moving surprise. This shouldn’t be taken as a negative, but it’s something that stood out. After what seems like the main antagonist is dealt with, the story wraps up with some questions to ponder with the final panel.

Brokenshire lets loose on some fantastic imagery with this conclusion. Readers witness many new supernatural characters now added to the mix once Kay crosses into the Other World. Readers also see how Kay has grown thru the course of this story. Kay looks ready to fight and handle all challenges that await her in this new world. The confrontations hit with great emotional impacts as Kay does her best to fins and save Mona. Brokenshire also does a great portraying Kay using music to give her an advantage when needed in this issue. The final panel shot is a perfect way to cap off this portion of the story.

Overall, Cold Iron #4 gives a satisfying ending to a very imaginative story. Diggle and Brokenshire close out this chapter of Kay’s journey with some memorable moments and gives readers some questions to ponder if/when we will see these characters again. For this edition, we’re checking out one of the best comics out there and one that’s an immediate must grab on Comixology Originals. The All-Nighter #8 by Chip Zdarsky, Jason Loo, Paris Alleyne, Aditya Bidikar & Allison O’Toole has been such a fantastic read. The mysterious “family” & their epic diner have been serving up some supernatural excitement for readers since it’s resumed on its’ second arc. (Note: While available on Comixology, The first story is now available via Dark Horse Comics for anyone interested in a print version). Where is the story heading now? Let’s check out the latest issue and see, shall we?

The All-Nighter #8 - On Sale July 26th

The Vampire “Family” of the All-Nighter Diner has been fractured over the past few issues. Ian, the patriarch/leader of the group has been missing and is captured. Cynthia, the second in command, is trying to hold things together while Ian is gone. Joy, the “youngest”, has left to reconnect with her mother while Alex, “the teenager” is still trying to be a “super hero” but has some competition with a new group of heroes named “The Justice Angels.” That’s only been the past few issues!

This issue opens up with a flashback sequence of another vampire named Charlie. When Charlie accidentally reveals himself to being a vampire, mysterious forces are trying to right that wrong. It’s an intense scene of events. All of this happens before Joy’s eyes until she is suddenly snapped back to reality where she is talking with her mother. During this moment, Joy’s dream of going back to her life before being a vampire is shown to be shifting in a different unplanned direction.

Meanwhile, “Francis’”, an ally to Cynthia , is confronted by Lazaruk, leader of The Justice Angels. Long time readers of this series know that there’s more that meets the eyes to both of these characters. Lazaruk is there to offer Francis a spot in his overall plan. It is one met with resistance as it is very ambitious but also very dangerous. Francis is left with much to think about.

With this information, he confronts, Cynthia and Alex, who are returning to the diner after last issue’s troubles. With the meeting of the three, Ian’s whereabouts are presumed and true nature is revealed. Francis also divulges Lazaruk’s plan. With little time to spare, the trio makes some moves. Readers are left with a returning character making an appearance but is greeted by someone they weren’t expecting and the last words will have readers very locked in for next issue.

Zdarsky really picks up the tension with this issue. Hearing Lazaruk’s plan explained is one that has dire consequences if he achieves it or not. With all the cards laid on the table, our heroes have decisions to be made. The quest to find “normalcy” seems to be fading further away with every action. This point is driven home with Joy’s story. Zdarsky crafts an extremely emotional break from the regular story to drive that point. The X factor in all of this might be Andrea, the former cop and human ally. The writing hits all the marks this issue (per usual) pushing the pace forward to what feels like a huge moment for our group.

Loo presents Joy’s story with much emotion and honesty as dealing with her return home. Seeing how her family reacts with Joy’s new life will hit readers very hard. The flashback sequence with Charlie leads to some great foreshadowing later on in the issue. Seeing the reactions of Cynthia and Alex to Francis’s omissions was very well done. The last page and line of the book capped off another solid issue of work. I can’t stress enough: this creative team is putting together one of the best comics out right now and there’s no reason not to give it a read with the consistent quality every time.

Overall, The All-Nighter #8 speeds up the drama with some big time revelations that shake the group right to the core. Zdarsky and Loo have been making some fantastic and imaginative stories within these pages. The supernatural elements mixed in with the human emotions of a group trying to find their place is must read material for any comic fan. Make sure to check this out on Comixology Originals this week as well as keep an eye out for the print version via Dark Horse Comics when available.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! On this edition, we’re taking a look at the return to Comixology Originals (via Best Jackett Press) for the one and only Scott Snyder! Last October, Snyder (along with Greg Capullo, Francis Manupal & Francesco Francavilla kicked off “Scottober”, with such releases as “We Have Demons”, ”Clear” & “Night Of the Ghoul”. All three books are fantastic reads and generated much excitement for comic book fans into checking this line of books out. All three of those series have wrapped (for now) but that wasn’t the end of what Snyder had started with Comixiology.

This week, It’s Scottober 2.0 as Snyder has three NEW books that are perfectly timed to drop for San Diego Comic Con (SDCC). One of those books is Canary #1 by Snyder, Dan Panosian, Richard Starkings and Will Dennis. Let’s check out the latest entry into the Comixology Originals line and see what fans will be buzzing about this weekend at SDCC, shall we?

Canary #1 - On Sale July 19th

This story kicks off in 1891 in Utah. Marshall Holt is investigating a murder of a school teacher. The panels pulls no punches in how violent of a crime this was. After talking with the local sheriff , Holt gets a sense where to go to find the alleged killer: a young boy by the name of Johnny Apple. Holt’s reputation draws a following to join him, but he declines and sets out to find the killer by himself. It’s bold but Holt doesn’t show any sense of worry as he sets out to find the child.

What he stumbles upon appears to have more than he bargained for. Readers will see how this mystery might be connected to something more sinister. How does
”Canary” play a role in this story? Can Holt solve this case? If he can, at what cost? The tension and drama is built so perfectly that after finishing the issue, you know there’s something special happening here.

A Horror Western story? Sign me up! Snyder welcomes readers into a very interesting world. Marshall Holt seems like the stoic lawman of the old west. Once the layers of the issue start peeling, readers see that there might be more going on with him and a past experience that meets the public eye. It’s a great counter balance to his celebrity status as the “dime novel cover model” that people know him as. This point is driven home when he is asked about his mask that he wears. The mood seems dark and when we see a flashback of Holt, it adds a great element to the direction of whats to come. Excellent storytelling.

Panosian crafts a gritty old western town to the letter within these pages. The imagery from the initial murder readers see to the gunfight that happens later captures that energy throughout this issue. How the facial depictions of Holt and Apple’s emotion are done this issue gives more impact to the story. Seeing how the young boy reacts to what’s happening and Holt’s flashback moments to current time, there’s much happening here with both. Can’t wait to see where this story goes next!

Overall, Canary #1 delivers on a debut issue that will have fans talking. Snyder and Panosian present a captivating tale of the old West with a strong horror element added in. Marshall Holt's story is just beginning but the opening chapter is one not to miss adding to your collection. Make plans to pick up a copy on comiXology this week!

This book is set in 1927 and is centered around a pilot named Hawk E. Baron. Baron has returned from World War 1 and now is paying the bills via barnstorming people in the sky for a small cost. Where this story begins, Baron is not having the best of luck with his line of work. His last few stops haven’t been anything to write home about but he’s told about this place called “Barnville.” There he is told about many people that will be waiting & thinks this will be the place where his luck changes. Upon arrival, his hope looks to be answered correctly. However, like most things too good to be true, it appears Hawk might be in way over his head.

A few hours prior, Hawk is in Whempy, Tennessee. Hawk provides the readers an insight on how the “Barnstorming” hustle works. Hawk runs into an operator girl who he’s trying to convince her to help announce his arrival in the next town. However, something halts that conversation for a bit. When it resumes, the operator agrees to terms but Hawk’s arrival is anything but a warm welcome. A minor mistake has now spiraled into Hawk meeting some of the town’s people in an unwelcome manner. This has now set him on a new adventure with mystery, love and murder creeping around the corner. What does it have to do with a woman by the name of Tillie? You’ll have to pick up the issue and find out!

What an incredible first issue! Barnstormers hits the ground running with hooking readers into Hawk’s problems from an impromptu introduction to some of the Barnville residents. Synder presents the readers with a very flawed character that finds himself in way over his head & basically no time to assess the danger he’s in. This goes into what Tillie brings to the story. Snyder shows a little bit to her character but not enough where readers can make a call on her motives just yet. From the initial panel. Hawk’s seemed like he’s never too sure of what he’s doing and by issue’s end, this is brought right to the forefront. The final narration on the last page drives home that there is so much more to this story & it’s definitely going to hook fans until its conclusion.

Lotay delivers some breathtaking images within this issue. Taking readers back into the 1920’s is made to look easy with the artwork here. The facial expressions from the characters really pop off the pages to add something extra to the story at hand. Look no further than the full page panel of Tillie near the end of the book. It’s absolutely impressive work. Everything about this book has a unique retro feel to it with maybe one exception but it’s a noteworthy moment in the book. It’s still too early to tell what Hawk witnessed in the pausing moment between the operator woman’s conversation but it adds a nice pace-changing visual to what’s being created here. Readers will have much to rave about with the art.

Overall, Barnstormers #1 kicks off a suspenseful thriller which will leave readers guessing at how this story will play out. Snyder brings excellent storytelling to this issue & is matched perfectly by the stunning art style of Lotay. Get on board now at Comixology & do not let this issue pass you by. Excellent read!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! for this edition, It’s “Scottober” In July on the Comixology Originals line (Via Best Jackett Press) as Scott Snyder returns with THREE brand new series! Last time Synder unveiled new books on the CO line on October of 2021, fans were treated to “We Have Demons” with Greg Capullo, ”Clear” with Francis Manupal & “Night Of the Ghoul” with Francesco Francavilla! All three books are incredible reads and are must owns on Comixology and print form for “We Have Demons” (currently) via Dark Horse Comics. There was a great panel at New York Comic Con (NYCC) which I was in attendance for that broke down the movement to Comixology and plans for the comic line.

This week, Scottober 2.0 kicks off as Snyder has three NEW books that are perfectly timed to drop for San Diego Comic Con (SDCC). One of which has Snyder working with Jamal Igle, Juan Castro, Chris Sotomayor, Tom Napolitano and Will Dennis on Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine #1! Let’s jump into this issue and chck out the next wave of “Scottober” on Comixology, shall we?

Dudley Datson and the Forever Machine #1 - On Sale July 19th

The story opens up with a very quirky narration: did you know that every great inventor has something very similar in each of their own stories? They all have a pet. However, in one inventor’s case, that always doesn’t guarantee anything. His name is Dudley Datson, a young man who’s life is anything but normal.

Datson is about to have a huge presentation, with his father, who is dealing with some health issues, claiming to in attendance. This is giving our lead much anxiety as you would expect. From here, readers are introduced to other major players in Dudley’s universe. Ohno, his best friend, Dr, Shae and Daedalus, a lovable dog ….. to everyone but Dudley all join the fray as Datson prepares his invention of “Duds” as he refers to them as. “Duds” are L.C.D. integrated fiber clothing (to sum it up quickly). However the presentation doesn’t exactly go according to plan and it makes for quite the awkward moment.

From this fallout becomes another issue that Dudley will not see coming. The misfire of the presentation has now become the least of his problems. Readers will be very invested to see which way the story goes from here. No spoiler talk of what happens for the latter part of this story. All I will say is readers are in for a fun ride and a last panel curve ball they arguably won’t see coming. Get ready!

This book was such a fun read. Snyder brings to life all the anxiety of a young genius that one would expect. Seeing the stumbling in social settings felt natural for a kid feeling the weight of the world on his back. How the story shifts will be an entertaining turn for the young lead. The book might mislead to a degree where readers think its going, but once the new direction of events are established, this is gonna be something to be buzzing about. The supporting cast is one to watch as well. The back and forth between Ohno and Dudley is light hearted and breaks from the more “normal” tone of the book. This world created will lock readers in for the ride after first read. No doubt about that.

Igle’s art is stellar for this issue. From the detail work in the opening pages “History lesson” to the lab where Datson made his invention, the arts is very fine and makes the pages pop off. There’s another scene later where a big surprise is unveiled but Igle’s art needs to be acknowledged for it. The final panel is so well done. The energy of a young man in NYC is brought to life with much to rave about. Tremendous job.

Overall, Dudley Datson & the Forever Machine #1 is a big hit. There’s a lot of elements happening with this story but Snyder, Igle and the rest of the creative team present it with such energy and enjoyment. After that final page, expect to be locked in for the ride cause it’s only going up from here. Make a point to check this out on Comixology this week! Highly recommended!

For this edition, we’re checking out a brand new series on the Comixology Originals line at some fans might already know the main character, who has starred in her own series of novels. Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #1 by Stephanie Phillips, Valeria Favoccia, Ellie Wright, Sheelagh D, and Saida Temofonte bring Beatrix Rose, the popular character from the Mark Dawson books to the comic world in a big way! Let’s check out the explosive first issue, shall we?

Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #1 - On sale July 12th

The background of Rose is that she worked for 15, a British Intelligence Group until she was betrayed by her team. She disappeared after that until her re-appearance. The issue starts off in 2006 Hong Kong, where someone is disposing of a corrupt businessman and his associates. There are no punches pulled as our narrator who’s disposing of these people is none other than Beatrix Rose. Rose gives the readers a quick run down of events: Husband has been murdered. Her Daughter - kidnapped. She’s on her own and moving in the shadows, working for the Triad. Being the gun-for-hire wasn’t exactly the plan but a bad direction is better than no direction.

When Rose has been given her next assignment, she brings work on tracking down “Yaomo” or “Demon”, whos been assassinating Triad members. Readers get a glimpse into how Rose goes about preparing for these missions with great narration as a backdrop. From here, Rose goes to work and comes face to face with her intended target. Once there’s a meeting of these two forces, Rose now comes to the realization this mission won’t be as easy as she might have thought.

There couldn’t be a better writer selected for this than Stephanie Phillips. If you haven’t checked her work out on We Only Kill Each Other , the amazing Grim from Boom Studios or a little book called Harley Quinn over at DC Comics just to name a few, Phillips is crushing it right now. Bringing Rose to the comic world after having the established book audience is tricky to pull off. Phillips gives her a strong introduction from her first assignment we see. The narration is perfect for new readers to the character (like myself) which gives enough, but not everything away about Rose’s past. The fight scenes are laid out exceptionally well, much due to Phillips’ background as a Maui Thai fighter (source: Beatrix Rose press release). The pace never slows down but it doesn’t have to here. Rose in action is the story and it’s one that locks you in from the jump.

Favoccia does a fantastic job bringing the Hong Kong Underworld to life through Rose’s actions. The fights feel very intense and captures the readers attention without letting go. The first encounter with Yaomo and Rose is excellent. It’s arguably the strongest visual moments of this issue after the intro pages. Seeing what a force she is, Rose instantaneously connects with the readers. The world of espionage mixed with underground looks like this will be a fun ride to jump on board with.

Overall, This new world of Beatrix Rose shows promise and excitement with its first issue. Incredible storytelling and art set the stage for what looks to be a non-stop thrill ride with intrigue thrown in the mix. Make sure you check this out on Comixology this week. It’s one that doesn’t miss its mark.

For this edition, we’re checking out the conclusion of an excellent series on the Comixology Originals line. Red Tag #5 by Rafael Scavone, Rafael Albuquerque, Roger Cruz, Chris Peter & Bernardo Brice has showcased the adventures of a trio of friends who become involved in a political scheme that has drastic effects on an upcoming election in Brazil. The book has taken some great twists but it’s time for this chapter to end. Let’s see how this final chapter of the story plays out, shall we?

The story of Lis, Lu and Leco has been an exciting one to read. Based in the streets of San Paulo, While standing up for a simple vendor on the street, the trio takes the phone of a corrupt policeman named Noronha. Unknown to them is that phone has secrets of plans to influence an upcoming election, including taking out an opposing candidate in Neto. With that information now open to the people, the powers that be are doing all they can to stop the three and keep their plans in place. A big factor to fixing this mess has been bringing in Zé Fofinho, a dangerous man who will do anything to clean up this mess. From killing Noronha to torturing Leco, Zé Fofinho will stop at nothing to end this. The three are now on the run and time is running out. Can they get the information to the right people and stop the election from being tampered with?

The final chapter begins with a flashback of Zé Fofinho in 1979. It’s another showcase of how evil this man truly is. Once sped up to present time (2018), Zé Fofinho is hot on pursuit of the three after the daring rescue of Leco last issue. Meanwhile, the three are working with a reporter by the name of Roque Alves to find out Zé Fofinho’s identity. From here, the pace really speeds up into a frantic action sequence as the walls close in on the 3 when trouble arrives at their front door….literally. When it’s settled, readers get the big showdown between Zé Fofinho and our heroes that has been building since the beginning. How does all this play out? trust me when I say this: readers will have a decisive conclusion to this story and one that they will want to immediately read again.

Scavone puts a well placed conclusion in place with this issue. The character of Zé Fofinho has been one that’s commanded the panels that he’s been in with his presence. The chess match that has been going on these past issues has been exciting to read. Lis has been the voice of the voiceless for this series and showed that never-back-down attitude even in the face of certain danger. Never more so does this come t the fore front than during the standoff. Readers will be excited to see how this plays out. The ending is very fitting for where the story was heading. In a world that could always use some courage, this story showed that courage can come from unexpected places and still pack a much needed impact when needed.

Cruz’s art was spectacular for this finale. The action sequences when the fight came to the front door was fun and creative to witness. During this story, it’s easy to forget that the heroes are not trained or having any super powers. They’re ordinary people with a will to help make change. The fights make perfect sense and the standoff proves to deliver the intensity of the moment. It’s fluid to the pacing. Nothing feels rushed and plays out very natural to the story. Great final panel to close this chapter out on.

Overall, Red Tag #5 delivers a satisfying conclusion to a very engaging story. Rafael Scavone, Rafael Albuquerque, Roger Cruz & the team present the power of courage in the face of insurmountable odds with excellent storytelling and art. The book is a great read and should be on your radar when looking thru Comixology this week.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! For this blog, we’re checking out the latest installment of one of the best books on the Comixology Originals line. The All-Nighter by Chip Zdarsky, Jason Loo, Paris Alleyne, and Aditya Bidikar returned last month with a shake-up to our favorite “diner team”. Don’t forget the initial arc is currently in print form from Dark Horse Comics so there’s absolutely no excuse to miss this series. Issue #7 wastes no time hitting the ground running so let’s deep dive into this exceptional series, shall we?

The All-Nighter #7- On Sale June 21st

The issue opens up with a quick flashback to when the diner started to become home to our group of Vampires trying to blend in without making any attention. Normalcy is something this group has struggled with since the beginning of the series (and rightfully so). How is “normal” to vampires. That idea is brought right to the forefront as Joy heads home to reconnect with her mother. However, as readers will see, the idea of “you can go back home” is met with mixed results.

Meanwhile, back at the diner, Alex is trying to continue the “super hero” life an has a run-in with the new “heroes” on the block: the Justice Angels. After the previous story arc, Super Heroes have a split public view. Some are in favor, such as police officer and ally Andrea, while others are against the fact of unchecked authority. The question of “what side are you on” becomes a huge part of this issue. Readers will see how this question poses no easy answer as Alex begins to investigate his “friends from work.” The results & last page will have readers talking until the next issue.

Zdarsky showcases the struggles of normalcy in this world within these pages. In Joy’s case, it’s returning home after being away for so long and the reaction she interprets. As for Andrea, balancing the line between her emotions responding to the new stat quo she finds herself in. Both moments represent the toll taken for being apart of this supernatural life. The storytelling really shines thru during these moments for readers. Not to be forgotten, the set-up for the new group of “heroes” arc will be fun to see played out.

Loo delivers on another great issue with the art duties. Depicting Joy returning to see her mother after all this time was presented with much emotion and subtle imagery. Perfect example of this is when Joy sees her mother’s medication bottles on the table (as pictured above). The scene is brief but draws the feelings of uncertainty out of Joy. The rest of the main characters get some solid panel time moving their stories along. The issue is capped off with a last page that drives home what present danger looms on the horizon.

Overall, The All-Nighter #7 continues forward on its’ successful return. Zdarsky and Loo present this unique world with excellent storytelling and art. The hype is real behind this book. Make sure to read this issue for NCBD and get caught up on the previous arc if you haven’t already. It’s Fantastic work!

Cold Iron #2 by Andy Diggle, Nick Brokenshire, Triona Farrell, Simon Bowland & Tom Muller picks up from the cliffhanger debut that introduced readers to Kay Farragher and the lost child Mona. Would this pair survive the night or succumb to the terrors they encountered? Let’s not waste any more time and jump into this latest chapter, shall we?

The story picks up where Kay and Mona are rescued by the police in the morning after spending the night in an abandon house. The police are trying to figure out what (if anything) makes sense of the story that they are telling. How can they explain Mona’s past and being from another world where it seems as shes hunted? However, a new character enters the story that might change everything. William Quilliam, a money broker who oversees the property shows up. At first, it seems as he’s on the up and up, but once readers see a few moments later, there are some red flags raised via his facial expression.

From here, Kay struggles to deal with Mona being turned over to social services. Once she goes back to find Mona, there is more information revealed that proves she is anything but ordinary. From here, the pair begin to try figuring out what has happened. Unfortunately for them, other forces are at play. can the pair survive long enough to figure out this mystery? And where does the character of Quilliam fit into this puzzles? Readers will have to read and make their own conclusions.

Diggle continues to build off off a soild debut with this issue. Kay’s story begins to shift gears as she becomes more connected with Mona. Seeing how their story has grown in such a short time has been a big win for this series. The addition of Quilliam adds another dynamic to this book. It’s very early in this story to figure out everything about him but there’s enough in this issue to make readers keep focused on him as this book progresses. Very good closing sequence to end the issue on.

Brokenshire does another fantastic job on bringing this world to life. Balancing out the grounded reality with the supernatural elements i presented with no problems. When the mystic moments happen, they’re big events. When the quieter conversation happen, they still translate to the reader as impactful. Readers are in for a real treat with the imagery they will see in this issue. Very cool final panels to close out on.

Overall, Cold Iron #2 continues to build it’s blend of reality and supernatural with a well crafted story. The saga of Kay and Mona grows with some very grounded moments only to shift into the realm of fantasy with ease. This book is one to keep an eye on when you’re checking out Comixology this week.

On this edition, we’re concluding a fantastic story from the Comixology Originals banner via Best Jackett Press. Clear #6 by Scott Snyder, Francis Manapul & Andworld Design has been nothing short of a pure adrenaline filled thriller that hasn’t let readers go since the beginning panels of this story. The futuristic world of Detective Sam Dunes has unveiled (pun intended) readers to a very captivating thought of what technology can really do to reality as we know it. How does it all end? Let’s deep dive into the conclusion of this epic tale and find out, shall we?

The issue kicks off with Detective Dunes making his way to the New Golden Gate, a massive Veil production plant. In 2052, Veils allow users to re-create their reality in the vision of whatever they think of. The mystery of veils connects with the death of his love Kendra which has started him on this adventure to begin with. After learning the truth about Veils from the Widow last issue, Dunes is now committed to end it all once and for all. He’s not alone in this latest move. Petal Madders, the client who hired him to investigate her husband is along for the ride.

As with all good intentions, nothing goes as planned here as instantly, an action is made that lights the match on this powder keg moment. What transpires after is a rollercoaster ride of reveals & scenarios that will have readers completely caught off guard and fully invested. Ultimately, the story concludes in a way that only it can. There’s a wide variety of emotions that readers will have right up to the final panel. It’s a fitting end for a character’s journey who’s struggled to find out what is real and what’s behind a veil.

WHAT A FANTASTIC CONCLUSION! Snyder brings this story to an epic finish that really brings everything back to square one. Dunes’ investigation has lead him to dig deeper to see things more “clear.” As we have witnessed reading this series, Snyder has challenged the reader in seeing the problem isn’t so much the antagonist challenging Dunes, but is it technology and what it can do. Our main character is flawed but sticks to his instincts for better or for worse. In this final issue, readers get to see how this all plays out for Dunes and what cost. There’s much to be contemplating about after the final page. Excellent work.

The world of 2052 is brought to so much life by Manapul’s artwork. From the opening page of this issue, the emotions are set as readers see Dunes and Petal driving into New Golden Gate. The art pops off the pages esp. during a 2 page spread featured later in the book (not featured here) and when Dunes and Petal make their way up the building elevator. Adding in so many different elements to this new landscape really brought out the most of this story. From seeing views through other’s eyes really tied thoughts back to the original question theme posed here about technology. There are some great action and character sequences during this issue but nothing stands out more than the final page of this book. It’s those closing images that put the perfect exclamation point on this incredible read.

Overall, Clear #6 brings a strong ending to readers who will have much to savor in re-reading this. Snyder and Manapul create a future world that proves not everything is easy to see when eyes aren’t wide open to the truth behind it. This is a broken record statement on this blog but do yourself a HUGE favor and get signed up for Comixology Originals so you can read incredible stories like this, Night of The Ghoul, We Have Demons & more must-read books.
