BLACK SIGHT #1 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we are checking out a brand new series from one of Comic’s biggest writers. With hit series such as Rogue & Gambit (Marvel), Eight Limbs (Humanoids) and THE coolest book at the LCS, GRIM (by BOOM! Studios), the hype is completely justified. Factor in such great series on Comixology Originals alone such stories as We Only Kill Each Other and Mark Dawson’s Beatrix Rose: Vigilante and there is no question with this latest entry is generating so much buzz.

BLACK SIGHT #1 by STEPHANIE PHILLIPS, along with Conor Boyle and Tom Napolitano brings forth an intense story of loss and mystery. Let’s not wait another minute and dive in, shall we?

The story begins with a haunting narration. There is a hand reaching through the yellow shading. Its’ intended target is a woman strapped and gagged to a gurney. Her name is Alex Greer.

Things change to what appears to be happier times. Alex is in a club in 1964 Amsterdam. Alex is dancing and enjoying the nightlife. A mysterious man tries to make time with Alex. She vaguely remembers him other than a big watch and bad hygiene. As the night takes over, Alex starts feeling the effects of the good time out.

Outside of the club, Alex vomits. The man tries to help her but Alex refuses. The man seems very focused on taking Alex somewhere for assistance until a stranger walks in and saves Alex from him.

Readers see how Alex’s night takes a different turn then expected. Heading into the final act, no one is prepared for where the story goes from here. Forget what you know and prepare for the unknown. If the final page is any indication, there is much to come to light other than a hangover from the night before.

There’s also a companion short story by Daleyna Abril and Marco Fodera that will be key to unraveling the mystery at hand.

Phillips scatters the pieces of the enigmatic puzzle being told here, you can’t help but be hooked for the long haul. Alex’s story starts out questionable from the openings page. However, it doesn’t take long for things to go sideways.

The build to the turning point almost feels like smoke and mirrors once the moment happens. It shows why Phillips is one of the best storytellers right now. From that moment, the story flips into a freefall which leaves many questions heading into the concluding pages, ensuring fans can’t afford to miss the next chapter.

Boyle’s art perfectly combines the feel of the 60’s with a haunting edge around it. The use of Yellow coloring plays such a big part in the visuals. There is no better case than the middle act. The usage builds around Alex’s new “friend”, building to a unique full page visual that tips readers off where things head next.

The switch of coloring brings the story back to a cold reality that readers will question especially after the final page. Get ready for a monster hit with this creative team only just starting.

Phillips, Boyle and Napolitano make a big debut with a enrapturing thriller that no one can escape. Superb writing builds for a dramatic twist with stunning visuals solidifying the story you think you see is definitely not all that it seems. Highest possible recommendation for New Comic Book Day this week.

GRIM #13 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

For this entry, we are checking out a series that transcends comics. Since its’ debut, GRIM from Boom! Studios has been more than just “reading a comic”. It literally has been an experience and vibe all its’ own. With unique visuals and an ever-engaging story, the life and times of a reaper and her friends have never been more featured in such a stand-out way. Now on its’ third arc, all bets are off on how Jessica Harrow gets out of the latest situation she finds herself in.

Since readers have been introduced to Jessica Harrow, they have bared witness to danger following her at every moment. From an initial runaway soul transfer to finding out she is the daughter of Death, “It’s Complicated” is arguably the easiest way to describe her life. Along for the ride are two friends: Eddie and Marcel.

In the current arc, Jessica was betrayed by Annabel, a fellow reaper to Adira, the current reigning figure of the afterlife. Adira is also Jessica’s aunt. Annabel has had ulterior motives for what she does. Working a deal with Kelly (a devil), Annabel uses Marcel’s soul as payment. Feeling the pressure of her plans caving in, Adira tries pleading with Jessica to assist her in a surprise twist. However, Jessica has never lost sight that Marcel is gone because of her scheming.

This issue finally catches readers up to what happened to Marcel as Kelly sent him to hell (literally). The story begins with an “Act 1: Creation” introduction like a play. A narrator speaks in French to let the audience know the back story. Suddenly, the story lands in France 1898.

Marcel and his lover Henri are in the Cabaret watching the narrator. The couple’s playful banter camouflages the situation at hand. Henri pleads his case with Marcel until they wind up on stage in-front of the crowd. The scene turns quickly as Marcel is confronted with questions if he is an angel or devil? While trying to escape the mob, the breaking of Marcel has begun with haunting questions.

What level of Hell has Marcel wound up in? Readers quickly see that Marcel is being forced to relive his past mistakes along the way down. The mood is brooding and at times, Marcel becomes shaken at what he is witnessing. There are more acts to follow until the final destination is hit but is it truly the end? There is much to break down in this emotional issue.

Phillips pens a tale of self-exploration, forcing Marcel into uncomfortable territory. Due to the tragic way things ended with his lover previously, the writing reflects that pain. The pacing takes Marcel’s decent into personal hell slowly enough that readers can feel the torment.

The conversations of Henri and Marcel vary from playful to anger with more in-between. Once the final act starts, the tension built unloads into a boiling point. Its’ resolution concludes the issue on an intriguing note as to where things go from here.

Flaviano and Renzi construct the visuals in another standout way. Marking the acts in Full Page Panels let readers know what level Marcus was descending into. The coloring inside the Cabaret gave a distinct feel as Henri and Marcel’s banter took the chapter into a noteworthy direction.

This is mixed in with strong images ranging from a frightening end to the middle act while raising the emotional tension between the two in the final act. The closing panel poses some questions but completes the torturous journey for now.

The descent into personal Hell makes a lasting impression in the pages of Boom! Studios’ hit series. Phillips presents the emotional turmoil of a tortured soul with the always impressive visuals of Flaviano, giving this series a feel and look like no one else. There is no excuse to pass on this issue on New Comic Book Day!

NOCTERRA #16 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, readers have come to the end of the road (for now?) for one of Image Comics’ most exciting series. Since its’ debut issue, the story of Valentina “Val” Riggs aka Sundog and the battle against eternal darkness has won fans over with fast paced action and high drama. Now with its’ latest arc ready to close, the creative team throws caution against the wind with an unforgettable conclusion to what has been a highly entertaining story arc.

NOCTERRA #16 by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Marcelo Miaolo and Andworld Design brings a definitive finale to the “No Brakes” storyline. Let’s not wait and deep dive into where Val and the Sundog Convey head now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With the world in eternal darkness, there is very little hope to be had. However, for the members of the SunDog Convoy, that is all they have. After picking up Augustus McCray (Gus) and his grand-daughter Bailey, also known as Piper on a ferryman run, Val (along with her adopted brother Emory) embark on a journey to find a save haven through the endless night.

Their journey has taken many twists and turns. It has also brought them into the path of Blacktop Bill, a dangerous follower of NOX. With the remaining members of the group arriving at Eos, a place of sunlight, plans do not go as planned. Blacktop Bill shows up and brings a fight with him. Emory decides to make a tough call and tries drawing out NOX in a trap. One of the components is to mentally connect with Bill. Once Emery does this, he quickly finds out that he is vastly outmatched. Bill sees thru Emory’s plan and NOX is now poised to enter the fight.

The story shifts to Thirteen years prior with Emory going to school. Emory addresses the audience about theories. It also is used as the backdrop to his complicated relationship with his birth mother. This quickly becomes a prequel for an event fans of this series has been waiting for. This is the moment the Sun “was killed”.

Fast forwarding to present time, Val and Emory are surrounded by Bill’s forces. When inside Emory’s mind, Bill figured out what the plan was and struck first. With the dark forces surrounding them, all hope looks lost. That is until an unlikely save is made.

Who has entered the standoff against Bill? What of Eos and the fate of the light? With Nox fast approaching, can the convoy make it to another day? Readers brace for impact as the battle is taken up another notch with Humanity’s fate hanging in the balance. There is no stopping to catch a breath.

Once the final act hits, readers are gifted a stunning resolution to what had happened. Letting the final moments sink in with stunning final images caps off a strong farewell for now, not forever.

Snyder leaves little behind as the final showdown between the Convoy and Nox lives up to the hype. Using Emory’s painful memories as a backdrop, the story reflects the hopelessness of the world they live in. With every advance Val and company make, readers sense it’s only temporary. Snyder never lets that stop the convoy members from trying to win.

Blacktop Bill steals this issue with his unrelenting attacks. The showdown with Emory is a satisfying conclusion to a build constructed heavily over the past few issues (and “Nemesis” special). The conclusion sets a fitting tone for where things will lead next time the convoy rolls on.

Daniel and Miaolo deliver on spectacular visuals throughout the issue. Opening with Emory’s past reflections, the emotional details laid out are an easy connect with readers. This carries to the current timeframe of the story. A smashing two-page full panel image of Val’s “back-up” sets the pace for the rest of the issue.

The menacing nature of Blacktop Bill shines through these pages as well. The evil grin never lets up as he takes on all challengers of the Convoy. The showdown with Emory will leave its’ mark with readers. Its’ resolution brings the fast-moving action to a screeching halt. The terror of Nox is split between two page half panels, making for quite the impression. The closing visuals bring a superb close to an action ride that shows no sign of slowing down, even after the last full page panel.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The Convoy’s last stand versus Blacktop Bill and Nox finishes with an epic conclusion that shouldn’t be missed. Snyder’s flawless writing matched with the amazing visuals of Daniel concludes the hopeless fight against darkness for now, until it’s time to hit the road again on New Comic Book Day!

SUPERMAN #6 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out one of the standout series of the “Superman” line over at DC Comics! Since it's kickoff in the “Dawn Of DC” era, the Man of Steel’s books have had a renewed focus, winning over fans with each issue. Case in point has been the latest “Superman” title by Joshua Williamson and Jamal Campbell.

After a brief hiatus with “Knight Terrors” and a strong Annual issue, the series returns to shops with Gleb Melnikov board for art along with Williamson, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher. Let's take a closer look at Superman #6, shall we?

Superman and Lex Luthor have always had a unique connection to say the least. In this current series, Lex is behind bars but has left Superman a massive gift in his absence. Superman is now in charge of the newly renamed “Supercorp”. With resources like that at his disposal, Supes should find crime-fighting easier. Sadly, that hasn’t been the case.

Surprise to no one, Lex has made some enemies. Dr. Pharm and Mr. Graft are two that have made some noise as of late that can’t be ignored. While using a Kyrptonite Klaw, they have amplified some of Superman’s rogues to new heights. This has all be a plan to keep him at bay while Lex is attacked and nearly killed in prison!

This issue opens up with the frantic attempt to save Lex’s life. The imagery holds nothing back at how grim the situation has become. The story jumps two weeks later is to see Superman is back in action, yet not quite himself. Not being there for Lex is weighing heavy on his mind.

Meanwhile at the Daily Planet, it is business as usual with Lois Lane handling duties as serving Editor-In-Chief. Lois and Clark have a brief chat which leads to Clark heading to his “corporation” for help with solving the riddle of “Project: Chained”.

Readers find out there is a specialized prison underneath Stryker’s Island. Someone is there, but no one knows the reason why. What kind of power needs that kind of containment? As Superman looks to diver further into the mystery, the answers he finds will be shocking.

Can he even handle what has been discovered? If the last page is any indication, bracing for impact is required with a parting image that jumps off the page leading to the monster Superman #850!

Williamson does an amazing job at tying in classic superhero plots with modern times. The relationship between Clark and Lex has always been rocky at its’ best case. Seeing Clark’s conscious weigh heavy for failing brings the near-perfect hero down to a grounded level.

It is Clark’s unwavering sense of truth, justice and a better tomorrow that leads him to utilizing “Supercorp” when even he has reservations. The mystery plays out well with Williamson leaving many questions unanswered for now. The final pages really drive home the point of how high the stakes are heading into the anniversary issue.

Melnikov steps in for art duties and brings a unique vision of Superman’s world to readers. There is an excellent two page spread of Superman flying over cars in Metropolois that feels like a vintage superhero image (which is fantastic). The scenes with Lois and Clark reflect the frustration both are dealing with respectively.

The action panels flow very easy and readers will sense the threat level with a great two-page spread of Superman addressing what he finds in his search. The final images leave no doubt that the story is only beginning and question if Superman can really save the day next time readers see him.

The new arc of Joshua Williamson’s “Superman” doesn’t delay in bringing action and excitement to readers. Sharp writing and excellent visuals by Melnikov and Sánchez give readers a fun story to jump along for the ride heading to the monumental Superman #850!

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #19 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out the conclusion of a two part story from arguably the best superhero book currently in comics.

Since it's debut Batman/Superman: Worlds finest by DC COMICS has been a runaway hit. It's no wonder why considering the creative team of Mark Waid and Dan Mora. In the current story, Travis Moore is filling in for Mora, but the series hasn't skipped a beat.

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #19 by Mark Waid, Travis Moore, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands concludes the legendary first meeting of 2/3 of DC’S heroic trinity. Let's take a closer look and see how that initial encounter plays out.

When a mysterious riddle is left at a crime scene in Gotham City, the first one to take notice would be the caped crusader himself, Batman. However, when a clue is written in is Kryptonian, that catches the eye of the Man of Steel.

As they meet in Gotham, there is still a sense of question each has about the other. Batman uses his Bruce Wayne Influence to meet with Clark Kent of the Daily Planet to ease some tension and answer more questions. Once the pair gets rolling they find out Jax-Ur, a long time foe of Superman has taken control of the Riddler! When confronting the villain, Batman gets pulled into the Phantom Zone, the long fabled limbo which is used as a prison!

This issue opens up with Superman fighting Jax-Ur over the skies of Gotham. Meanwhile, Batman is communicating telepathically with Alfred. In the conversation, readers are told of how the Zone walls had been weakening to breaches and absorbing Goth residents in the process. It is revealed Jax-Ur knew where a breach was presumed to occur and used the Riddler to lure Superman there and swap places. During the encounter, it was Batman who was pulled in instead.

With the battle taking place, Batman forces his thoughts thru the warped Phantom Zone to connect with Superman. It is in this moment that not only is a plan put in place, but common ground is met between the two that bonds them for years to come.

What does Batman think of now? Can the pair find a way to make this work and save the day? readers sit back and enjoy watching the fight get taken to Jax-Ur. The resolution plays perfectly into what makes these two legends. The parting image is a bit of a surprise as an epilogue showcases this story is not as over as readers might think.

Waid sets up the story in such a manner that readers can’t help but smile reading it. Even behind the Phantom Zone walls, Batman finds a way to decipher the problem and pairs it up with Superman’s strengths of unending hope to make it work. The pair’s ethics have always been different but when together, it pops off the page.

The final act doesn’t falter giving readers the iconic moments that they have become accustomed to when seeing the pair work together. The final panel for their story portion perfectly closes the beginnings of a lasting friendship.

Moore delivers on big action for the majority of this story. The fight between Superman and Jax-Ur over the Gotham Skyline is an easy win for readers. Even when Batman and Superman take the fight to very familiar spot, Moore never takes the foot off the gas for the battle.

There’s a great full page shot showing the devastation around them. Later in the book, there’s a few panels that cement the pair’s future with a legendary feel. The closing panel captures the moment and leaves fans grinning from ear-to-ear seeing the birth of the World’s Finest.

The first meeting between two of DC Comics and pop culture’s most beloved heroes concludes with an unforgettable issue. Waid’s excellent writing is brought to life with Moore and Bonvillian’s art to present the catching throwback tale for the modern audience. This is Superhero comics at its’ finest….world’s finest.

NIGHTWING #106 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we’re checking out the return of the 2023 Eisner-award winner for regular series via DC Comics! Ever since taking over the writing reigns, Tom Taylor has made the life and times of Dick Grayson into must-read adventures every time out. Now set to start a new epic tale, it’s a perfect time for new readers to jump on board and see what all the hype is about!

Nightwing #106 by Tom Taylor, Michael Conrad (Breakfast for Dinner), Steven Byrne, Serg Acuña (Breakfast for Dinner), Adriano Lucas and Wes Abbott puts Bludhaven’s protector on a path of danger and mystery. Let’s dive in and see where this new arc leads readers now, shall we?

The story begins in Bludhaven two years prior. A man is being followed walking down the street. When his trailer catches up with him, the assumption is the man in question is Dick Grayson. However in this case, he is not. This is RIC Grayson. In case anyone isn’t familiar, Ric is the amnesic persona that emerged when Dick was shot in the head by the KGBeast during Tom King’s run on Batman.

Ric is being followed by a man who claims he was in the circus with Grayson when he was a kid. He hands Ric an envelope. At the Prodigal Bar, Ric starts up conversation with Bea, the bartender/owner about places to hide the envelope. The story jumps two days later where a man known as the Quartermaster offers a place to stash the mysterious object: the Hold. Ric writes a name down on the ledger for someone to claim it: Nightwing.

Now jumping to present time, Dick Grayson focuses his attention back on a clue told to him by a sailor a wile back. Why is his name written on a box in the Hold? As Dick begins his investigation, a few familiar “friends” have already made their way to the Hold. The pair of Heartless and Tony Zucco have forced their way inside the cave. However when they arrive, what they see isn’t expected.

What is found when they go inside? Nightwing arrives on the scene but what happens next, readers won’t see coming. Behind the action comes a swift ending that is sure to please fans as a welcoming return to Mr. Grayson’s world hits the marks.

There’s also a small back-up story called “Breakfast For Dinner” which teams up Nightwing, Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown up facing a looming foe.

Taylor jumps right back in with a solid introduction chapter. The character of Ric Grayson is extremely polarizing amongst DC Comics fans. However, Taylor’s usage of the character for this story works very well. Seeing Dick retrace a past he doesn’t remember is a great twist to open this chapter with. The character of Heartless provides a great foil to Dick. Some feel the cat/mouse game they’re playing has gone on too long but I disagree. Keeping Dick on the chase builds up the credibility of this deadly villain.

Heading into the latter half of the issue, Taylor gives fans a well-timed action sequence to break the dialogue up. It is vintage Grayson which fans will be excited to see. The final leads to a strong cliffhanger ending which plays into why this book gets so much praise. Just when you think you know the answers, the questions get reshuffled. That’s always a win for readers.

Byrne steps in for Bruno Redondo for this issue and readers will see the standout introduction of Heartless to this story. The panels move briskly as the villain wastes no time making an immediate impact. This all builds toward a hall-full page panel showing where he and Zucco got with their plans. Meanwhile, Byrne gives readers a steady dose of action sequences featuring Nightwing, building off a solid full page motorcycle panel. The final moments swing things back to the story with mounting tension. The parting image closes with a noteworthy full page panel to say goodbye for now, but not for long.

WONDER WOMAN #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the return of one of DC Comics’ Trinity Characters. In their illustrious history, there has been many heroes of legend but three have stood above the rest: Superman, Batman and Princess Diana of Themyscira otherwise known as Wonder Woman!

Since debuting in ALL-STAR COMICS #8 in 1941, the adventures of Diana Prince have become that of legend amongst comic readers. Now poised to start a new chapter under the “Dawn Of DC” banner, there is a ton of buzz surrounding her latest saga due to the talented creative team behind it.

WONDER WOMAN #1 by Tom King (Mr. Miracle), Daniel Sampere (ACTION COMICS), Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles kicks off a brand new story that is sure to be one fans will be talking about at the LCS this week. Let’s take a closer look at what’s going on, shall we?

The issue begins in West Billings, Montana with a simple game of Pool at a bar. The narration leads readers to think that an event has already happened. In the moment, there is some unwelcomed banter amongst patrons. The end result is an Amazonian is smashing a disrespectful male head-first thru the table.

As more male patrons of the bar interject themselves into the conflict, the end result leaves them no reward. When the smoke has cleared, nineteen males are dead inside the bar.

The news media is reflecting the public’s shock about this attack. Some are putting a spin on the events. Suddenly, a man’s phone gets a message that interrupts his meeting with two other individuals. When leaving the meeting, the mysterious figure kills the two businessmen after revealing he was working undercover to expose them. With the bodies laying dead and a room full of scared patrons, the man simply walks up to the counter and leaves his business card to give to the authorities. His name is Sgt. Steel

Steel is now put in charge of a unit known as the Amazon Extradition Entity (A.X.E.). AXE is the result of the Congress-passed Amazon Safety Act, which bans Amazons from being inside U.S. Borders.

Readers will need to brace for the viciousness of Steele and his unit. What transpires next will send shockwaves through the DCU. These actions don’t go unanswered as there is someone who has a very vested interest in discovering the truth and the U.S. might not be ready for what Hell she will bring when she strikes. If that is not enough, just wait for the final moments to add more fuel on an already enraged fire!

King constructs such a multi-layered conflict in this opening issue. The idea of the Amazons being banned from the United States is a fantastic twist. With Diana being such a popular and respected public figure, the new stat quo brings forth how will the people now look at Diana after Congress makes their move. King gives some insight to this, but readers can expect the payoff to be later in this series. The question ultimately becomes where will they ultimately side: Diana or the Government?

Steel proves to be a solid foil to what Diana is up against. His blind loyalty is a reflection of the government’s opinions as they push an agenda forward. This is brought to terrifying light on their initial move. The pace nicely builds the tension before the eventual meeting of opposing forces. The action hits when it graces the story but its’ fallout plays a bigger factor. the closing moments throw everything on its’ head as another piece is added to an already impressive puzzle.

Sampere brings this story to life with easy and anxiousness as things swiftly change. The initial outing in the bar paints a vivid picture of the melee that transpired. Excellent full-page panel to light the fuse for this portion. Also noteworthy is the use of the 9-panel page for when the reporters come into the story. Sampere also adds much emotion to the supporting cast of Steel’s attack.

The mannerisms range from scared, frightened to Steel’s maniacal enjoyment of what is happening. The mood changes later as Steel sees exactly who he’s up against as a ill page stand-out visual welcomes that character to the party. The closing moments throw a swerve into where things are heading with a parting image to close out a strong debut chapter.

Mixing in the superhero world with political conspiracies brings forth a grave challenge to Princess Diana of Themyscira. Through King’s superb writing, the visuals from Sampere and Morey paint a fractured and dangerous new world with one character fighting for justice against insurmountable odds. The hype is completely justified on what is happening within these pages. Don’t miss out on NCBD!

Erie, Pennsylvania is the home of the latest mission involving the secret Order of St. George. With at least 14 dead in a small town, Bait has been sent undercover into a foster home to start investigating what is the cause of these killings. The move might be one that other younger members of the order question, but there s much more to this White Mask than anyone realizes.

This issue opens up with Bait waking up in his new surroundings. Making his way down the stairs, the foster house residents are all waiting. The meeting becomes a touch awkward with Bait keeping his emotions in check. Even with a playful welcome is given, Bait is thinking of taking out his “greeter”.

Things shift gears as another member of the house catches Bait’s attention: Nannette. Bait is distracted by her presence but regroups to focus on the mission at hand. Someone in the house is connected to the case. Someone is going to be exposed.

Readers see Bait go into action. What does he encounter in his travels? Why is he so infatuated in Nan? There are many questions laid out as small clues are revealed to the overall picture coming into view.

Johns delves into Bait’s character for quite a few standout moments. The interactions meeting the house residents plays into his mysteriousness. It isn’t until Nan makes her appearance that Bait gives any inkling of emotion. The lone action sequence adds more fuel on that building fire of Bait’s true feelings.

Johns mixes in well-placed breaks to have readers guessing as to what’s a flashback or a dream. The slow pacing gives the character moments time to breathe and build up to a memorable parting page. It’s a great send off and one that looks to be one Bait might not be ready to handle.

Cadonici and Segala mix the moods of the story with perfect use of coloring. The blue shading of Bait’s “greeting” inside the house makes for a solid connection to the readers. Whenever Nan appears, the lighting shifts to an orange-red glow some would think is Bait’s emotions reflecting to the readers.

The action portions play out fast-moving and capped with a great two page flowing spread. The closing images are subtle in comparison but leave nothing behind heading into the story’s next phase.

With his family crumbling, Batman looked to be fighting this battle by himself. That outlook was quickly discarded when the bond between Father and Son took over in his darkest hour. Now with Damian Wayne fully by his side, Batman continues his mission against crime with a newfound focus.

This latest chapter in the caped crusader’s life begins at the Gotham Zoo. It is a stormy night. A haunting narrator is describing their view of Gotham. They elude to extreme changes. Readers witness a figure working in a lab area and their subject makes a loud statement on the panel. A bat is being dissected.

The story shifts to the dynamic duo flying into a Zeppelin over the Gotham skyline to stop the White Rabbit. With hostages in tow, the situation is intense. Batman and Robin take down Rabbit and her hired help. The aircraft is stabilized and hostages are rescues. The moment is capped off with a perfectly placed Fist Bump between father and Son.

Post mission, Bruce and Damian head home into a brownstone inside Gotham City limits. With the situation with Catwoman escalading, the Manor isn’t the best base of operations currently. Considering the past few months, reconnecting as a family has been a challenge. Bruce appears to be trying but Damian is more guarded.

A day later, Damian breaks down the Rabbit’s motives. The center of her attack (and a few other robberies) has been Dr. Kafira, known for DNA work. Kafira was also a hostage on the airship. That night, the pair heads out to pay him a visit.

What they find appears to be another kidnapping attempt. However, readers soon find out more is going on than the pair realizes. The situation escalates until a shocking move happens leaving the pair trying to cypher what is going on.

Williamson pushes the family dynamic to the forefront as the new adventure hovers in the background. The current relationship of Bruce and Damian is one that is rebuilding itself. Post White Rabbit, the closing moments are capped off with a perfectly placed fist bump. It might seem like a throwaway moment but it nails what the book is all about.

The conversation the pair has in the brownstone drives that point home. Seeing Bruce trying to find the right words while Damian copes shifting the conversation back to the current mission leaves no question in readers minds.

The “drawing Pad” in Damian’s room backs that up with how Damian is dealing with his family dynamic. The story at hand is solid with much room to grow. It feels like a “back to basics” Batman and Robin which means nothing but win for the readers.

Di Meo wastes no time bringing the action to this issue. A fantastic 2 page spread with the duo crashing through the Zeppelin canopy establishes a high pace for the moment. Do Meo also hits the bullseye with the Bruce/Damian conversation at home. There is a creative use of shadows and light to reflect Damian’s past few months. This is capped off with a solid full page shot of his sketch pad.

Heading into the final act, the villains are featured with another great two page panel that readers will be excited to see. The attention to details here is fantastic. The issue is capped off with a superb cliffhanger panel that you can’t help but run to get the next issue after seeing.

The new adventures of Bruce and Damian Wayne wastes no time locking readers in for what will only be an incredible story. Making family first, Wlliamson plays off the father/son bond with an exceptional script. Di Meo compliments the script & constructs a distinct feel of energetic visuals making it a 1-2 combo that can’t be missed. Don’t miss this book on Bew Comic Book Day!

The story begins in 1692. A young girl is tied to a stake, pleading for her life. The mob watching isn’t welcoming the idea. Readers look on as the girl’s pleads fall on deaf ears as the stage is hit on fire.

The story shifts gears to a brighter time with an army of armored animals ready to brace for the fight ahead. They are addressing their queen, who is fully prepared to lead her troops into battle. As she unsheathes her blade, the time period jumps to 1995 where an eight year old girl named Rose is playing with her stuffed animals. Her “quest” leads her to where her mother is handling bills. Rose asks her mother to join in on her “fight” but real-world problems are taking a higher precedent.

As the battle winds up and Rose returns home from school the next day, she’s looking to play again. However, there is nothing giving a happy vibe to Rose’s world on this day. Something happens this go-around that no one is expecting. Rose is transported into her fantasy realm. This trip, things have gone very grim.

What happened to “The Kingdom Of Rosewood”? How does Rose handle this latest threat? The journey just begins as the lines blur between imagination and reality. Even when the story starts taking off, the final pages leave no room for mis-interpretations as the mystery begins to change directions before it starts.

Parker and Sheridan weave quite the engaging tale with this debut issue. The pacing gives enough balance to where Rose’s worlds of reality and fantasy can make their marks while keeping readers guessing. The book kicks into high gear with the actions of one fateful night.

At that point, the writing duo play into the fairytale aspects with the “big bad” slowly making their Prescence felt. One can guess this ties into the beginning moments but (as with every great story), readers will have to wait and see the connection there. The closing moments give a chilling close to what is sure to be a saga like no other.

Quinn and Hill balance the light hearted imagination moments with the dark and brooding panels with ease. The team constructs an imaginative world that conceals the dangers lying ahead. Once the moment where Rose sees her “kingdom” come crashing around her, the art takes a swift change in tone to reflect the growing terrors unfolding.

The prime examples of this are Rose’s drawings. With the use of full page panels, the truth of her world have turned grim and violent. The art builds the heightened fear up and adds more to the shocking final page. It’s very creative in set-up and fans will be impressed with what they see.

BATMAN #137 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, Gotham City has been officially declared a warzone as DC Comics’ most dangerous city gets caught up in a game of cat and mouse …. or should we say “Cat and Bat”?

Fresh off a buzz-making debut chapter, Batman #137 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles continues to give fans prime seats as the implosion of the bat family continues! let’s take a closer look as the drama unfolds, shall we?

From the fallout of “Knight Terrors”, Batman has exhausted himself past his own limits. The result is Bruce Wayne has been “asleep” for a LONG time. When he awakens, Gotham City is a different place. Crime is down significantly. The cause is an initiative taken that brings up a question of ethics to the Caped Crusader. The person behind the movement makes it even that more complex: Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.

While Bruce has been away, Selina has been secretly training the “henchmen” or lower-level criminals of Gotham certain burglary skills with a code. The targets are only the rich. Batman doesn’t agree with the “Robin hood” method but Selina isn’t backing down from her stance. Due to their complex history and current relationship status, lines are being drawn about if this is right or wrong.

However, one pupil named Roland Garner get murdered in an attempted robbery which makes Batman declare this movement is officially over. Making matters even worse is Batman’s back-up personality, Zur-En-Arrh, has been unlocked with him so broken over recent events. This does not bode well for all parties involved as War is coming to Gotham with no good outcome to follow.

This chapter begins with a couple of Catwoman’s students honing their craft in a luxury apartment complex. As they begin their work, Batman is waiting inside for them. Citing Garner as a symbol for his actions, Batman easily disposes of the pair, saying “Nobody Dies Today”!

Readers quickly see how Batman (under the influence of Zur-En-Arrh) starts to attack Selina’s forces. The impact is felt immediately leaving Selina to retaliate in a manner that won’t sit well with Batman. All the while, the various members of the Bat Family are trying to make sense of this all.

Events start unfolding as the dangerous game of chess starts escalading even further. The action doesn’t slow down as Batman continues to try hanging onto his vision of Gotham, no matter who is in his way. Just when readers think they know what’s going on, the final page will be a shocking reveal as another major player has entered the game.

Zdarsky continues to slowly feature the breaking of the Bat in this latest chapter. With Zur-En-Arrh pulling the strings, it adds another layer to Batman’s complex paranoia. The pacing sets up a solid build to the heart of the issue. The ally she has acquired sets up the issue’s standout moment. Considering their history, Selina plays off whatever Bruce throws in her direction with a heightened awareness of what’s needed to be done to win. It is no surprise at the personal angle she plays to get the upper hand. Its’ fallout plays into the lines divided but what a great surprise from the final page. It’s suffice to say this battle is far from over.

Jiménez unleashes Batman’s most feared personality with a distinct intensity. From the opening pages, the force of Batman’s unforgiving attacks make a big imprint with readers. It’s countered nicely by Selina’s reacting and responding plays. The action panels come with a great deal of high energy mirroring the frezny of Batman’s onslaught and warning on those standing in his way. Readers will be excited when other notable names make their marks in this issue. That said, none will be bigger than the shocking debut into this story featured on the full panel page to set up the next chapter nicely.

The battle of Gotham rages on with an excellent second chapter. The pace is set early building the tension up to a great breaking point with the art and writing. The final page will have fans guessing as to where we head from here, but there’s no doubt this story is one to watch.

BIRDS OF PREY #1 (DC COMICS)

Now with the “Dawn Of DC” back in full swing after “Knight Terrors”, a new team has formed taking the mantle into the next chapter of their history.

It also ushers in Thompson’s DC Comics debut! Let’s not wait another second and see what this all-star line-up brings for this explosive team, shall we?

The story begins in Star City. Oliver Queen and Dinah Lance are having a discussion about Dinah’s latest mission. The details are vague, but the stakes seem to have Dinah anxious about what she’s about to do. Readers witness that Barbara Gordon (Longtime Birds Of Prey member) has been kept out of the loop. With all this tension, what could be the cause? It is revealed that something has happened to Sin, Dinah’s sister.

The search for team members begin with Dinah stopping by Gotham City. A certain caped fighter is holding her own against the League of Assassins: Batgirl (Cassandra Cain)! Dinah jumps in the fray and business is handled. Readers witness Dinah’s pitch to join on this mission and a somewhat surprise reaction from Batgirl.

From here, readers settle in for the ride as Dinah and Cassandra go back recruiting for their mission, adding two dangerous fighters to the team” Zealot and Big Barda! Just as it seems the team is ready, a decision is made for a fifth member. It’s one that could make or break this team before they even start. The fifth choice is Harley Quinn!

Does Harley accept? How will his team work together? Get ready as the key players appear to be lined up. The final moments drop a bombshell on what is happening here which can only guarantee that readers will be counting down the days until issue #2!

Thompson makes a huge splash that fans new and old will can’t wait to see play out. Opening with her struggles braking away from Oracle, Thompson shows a sense of doubt in Dinah that is rarely seen. Once the reason behind the danger is reveal, it’s an instant connection with readers.

The recruitment stories play out well, building up the hype for the new team. The banter between Big Barda and Batgirl will make for a great pairing between the heroes in future issues. The addition of Zealot could prove to be the real wild-card of the team. The Harley Quinnn factor is a great shake-up to how the team is coming together. Thompson sets up the reasoning why in a unique way that makes the choice easier to break down. The line-up is a great one and for what lies ahead, there’s much to enjoy.

Romero and Bellaire balance the action and drama out evenly through the entire issue. Form the beginning, the art reflects how Dinah is preparing for the upcoming mission. The reactions in the conversation with Oliver connect with readers as how the stakes are high with no room for error. The panels also showcase how Barbara not being involved is playing a big part into the overall feel of the book. This quickly shifts into the stop by Gotham and an incredible two page full spread of Dinah and Cassandra teaming up.

This is matched with a great “flashback” sequence where the coloring is flipped lighter, adding a distinct look to the mini-story break here. Solid final page reveal imagery to set the course on what is sure to be an instant hit with fans.

LOCAL MAN: GOLD (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a one-shot from an Image Comics series that has captured the 90’s vibe like no other. If you haven’t been reading Local Man by Tony Fleecs and Tim Seeley, you’re missing out. The story of Jack Xaver has brought back the good, bad and what of that era while modernizing his fall from grace in the present.

The series just wrapped up its’ first arc but before starting the new one, readers are gifted a very special issue. Local Man: Gold by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, and Felipe Sobrerio delivers a fun crossover fitting for this series feature some very familiar faces. The life and times of JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK in his post heroic career couldn’t have been more complicated if he tried. After being publicly fired from Third-Gen, Xaver tried returning to normalcy in his hometown of Farmington, Wisconsin, Jack doesn’t receive a hero’s welcome. Xaver also has to deal with the mysterious deaths of The Hodag and Frightside. Being considered the prime suspect, Jack resumes his his old ways. When Xaver starts investigating, he draws attention from Camo Crusader, leader of Third-Gen with an axe to grind. Their confrontation leads to Camo being killed by Jack , who saves Chief Bucholz in the process of clearing his name…for now.

This new chapter begins with Jack just starting his day greeting his parents It’s not just any other day. It’s Mothers Day. Jack has good intentions but like much of his post-hero life, his reputation proceeds him. Before he can get going with his day, Cheif Bucholz has summoned him down to the police station. When Jack arrives there, readers will be shocked to see who’s sitting in a cell: It’s CROSSJACK from the Third-Gen era!

What is going on here? Can Farmington handle TWO Jack Xaver’s?! Readers follow along as the Jack of old hasn’t come alone. There is a collection of classic Image Characters along for this wild adventure. What could possibly bring this eclectic group together? The journey is pure nostalgia mixed into the present time as the danger hits close to home for Jack. The result is a fun episode that fans won’t want to end.

Fleecs and Seeley continue to bring that certain 90’s era storytelling and mesh it into the present day like no one else. Seeing Jack come face to face (literally) to his past made for a very enjoyable tale. Jack’s realization of how he was back then made for a serious point in his continuous growth. The throwback characters stole scenes throughout the story. Seeing the interactions was a nice addition to the story at hand. Even the subtle lines referencing characters like “Billy Kincaid” are great easter eggs. The threat at hand is a solid surprise with its’ resolution. The ending doesn’t miss its mark and preps readers for what lies head as the adventures of Jack Xaver brace for another run.

The art keeps the classic feel of the story going forward. Crossjack continues to look the part of a “Youngblood” member with the art reflecting Liefeld’s style in certain panels. The near full page jail panel makes a prime example of this. Another great homage style is certain images of a classic McFarlane character (but probably not the one you think). The story builds the fighting to close with a two page spread worthy of the early Image crossovers of old. For anyone who wants to get a taste of classic Image in the modern time, this issue is one to check out!

SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #4 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest chapter from a new series at Image Comics that traditional superhero storytelling fans want to keep an eye out for. With now four issues in, the saga of Grant Garrison continues to give fans much to talk about.

The Savage Strength of StarStorm #4 by Drew Craig and Jason Finestone picks up the pieces of last issue’s devastating loss of Grant’s closest ally…maybe? Let’s not wait any longer and dive right in, shall we?

Since he showed up with amnesia on a highway, Grant Garrison’s life has been surrounded with mystery. Trying to adjust to high school has been the least of his concerns. After a meteor crashes in his high school, an object known as the Sharsrum becomes a part of Grant. It awakens something inside of him. Grant is learning on the fly as he’s developed powers but the world (and universe) isn’t waiting for him to learn.

Mysterious forces have a vested interst in Grant. One in particular is Princess Z’Shan Draigo. She sends the Tiger Clan after Grant to retrieve the Sharsrum. In the process of conflict, Jen (Grant’s ally and fellow survivor of the meteor) is shot and killed by the Tiger Clan after Grant can’t surrender the Sharsrum. They leave with a stern warning to give them the weapon or more people will die.

This issue opens up with Draigo being debriefed about the Tiger Clan’s run-in with Starstorm. She is none too happy that they returned empty-handed. They explain the first run was a test to see what they were facing. However, Draxus isn’t as patient and steps in to lead the next challenge

Meanwhile on Earth, Grant holds Jen’s lifeless body buy something changes instantly. Jen becomes flying as an energy-fire being. When the pair finally hits the ground to assess, they find out that Eli (Grant’s friend/Jen’s half brother) has changed into a massive figure.

With the police now on the scene, Grant unlocks a doorway to somewhere no one is expecting! Where do they go now? Readers see that the trio crosses into a place where no one can expect. Plus, there are some familiar faces involved in sending the group onward for the next challenge. After seeing the last page, readers will wonder if the words of warning worked or were they all just wasted air?

Craig moves things along very rapidly with the story unfolding in this installment. Jen’s “resurrection” plays well into the overall picture as there are a LOT of players involved in the Sharsrum hunt. The explanation of powers is still an area that might throw some readers off but more and more, the meteor that hit will more than likely become the catalyst for how there’s an influx of super-powered beings.

Craig throws in some fun one-liners (even referencing himself) in the mix. It helps off-set the latter half, which sets up Grant’s next big challenge. Like previously stated, this series pays great homage to the Kirby themes of classic storytelling. If that is your thing, this is your book.

Craig also goes heavier than usual on two page spreads this issue. For being such a young series, readers get the sense of a grander universe at hand. Craig needs to be applauded for the amount of characters he’s introduced in the short amount of time.

he Kirby influences are quite noticeable, especially in the latter half of this chapter. The amount of detail sprinkled in for those two page spreads give readers a challenge to find new characters in the backgrounds. The final full page panel gets the book lined up for what should be a turning point in the life of the young hero.

Grant Garrison gets some back-up and guidance for what lies ahead in this vintage superhero-style book. Craig and Finestone give readers a fun tale that is sure to connect with the superhero side in all readers. Keep an eye out for this on New Comic Book Day.

BLACK HAMMER: THE END #1 (DARK HORSE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we are checking out the latest installment from an award-winning franchise via Dark Horse Comics. The Black Hammer story by Jeff Lemire debuted in 2016 and has garnered multiple awards including some Eisner’s in its’ time of publication.

In 2023, it appears as the series is heading to a conclusion with Black Hammer: the End #1 by Lemire, Malachi Ward, Bryce Davidson and Nate Piekos. Let’s take a closer look and see how things are setting up, shall we?

In case anyone is new to the series, “Black Hammer” centers around a group of heroes stranded in the past in the town of Rockwood after an epic battle against the Anti-God. Rockwood is no ordinary place has has a distinct aura to its’ energy. Since that time period, the series has splinted into various spin-offs and crossovers throughout the years. One notable one was with DC Comics’ Justice League.

Now in 2023, thinks look very bleak for these heroes. The issue begins in Spiral City of Earth 312. Golden Guinevere and Zafram are fighting a losing battle against some creatures. When Zafram is disintegrated, Guinevere reverts back to being a child. However, hope for her might not be lost. A figure known as Spacedigger has appeared and teleports her away. Their destination is a space ship helmed by TLKE-WLKE and Colonel Weird. They all watch as the world they were just on explodes!

Meanwhile back in Rockwood, the police are pulling up looking for a missing child. Inspector Insector needs to hide as the sheriff starts asking questions. Once the mystery has been solved with the introduction of Lucy Weber, the small group makes its way to a farm long time readers know all too well.

What does Lucy talk with the group about? After witnessing a world die, What is Colonel Weird’s plan? Who or what is causing this? Readers get some clues as to where things are heading. Rest assured, after the final page, they will need to buckle in for one hell of an adventure.

Lemire sets the prime players in motion for what should be an unforgettable final(?) series. The introduction is a big statement at how dangerous the stakes are. Lemire ties in the game planning of Colonel Weird as a solid backdrop during the opening segments. This builds a brisk pace at where things are heading. The Rockwood portion gives a great balance as Lucy comes back into the fold with a grave warning ahead. Knowing this will be the presumed end, the tone of the book reflects the severity of conflict. This carries thru to the closing image, which lets readers know to get ready for a strong finish.

Ward and Davidson come out of the gate swinging with this issue. The two page spread (featured above) is absolutely eye-catching. Reflecting Weird’s demeanor as events play out makes another big statement. Even new readers (such as myself) will immediately connect with what is involving and how grave the outlook is. The Rockwood portion plays into that groups reactions to what lies ahead. The panels range from shock to determination. It added to the overall tale nicely. The final sequence will catch some off-guard but leaves no doubt of how things are shaping up.

THE DEVIL'S CUT (DSTLRY MEDIA)

For this entry, the comic book world was shaken up with the announcement of a brand new company that truly is going to be a game-changer. Early in 2023, David Steinberger and Chip Mosher announced a company was coming which was going to be one of the most pro-creator companies in history: DSTLRY !

If anyone is unfamiliar with the pair, they were two of the biggest names over at Comixology. With their respected backgrounds, this upstart brand had a solid foundation to begin growing. Following them was a who’s who of top named creators who are founding members of the brand. They are Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Brian Azzarello, Stephanie Phillips , Mirka Andolfo, Joëlle Jones, Tula Lotay, Lee Garbett, Marc Bernardin, Becky Cloonan, Junko Mizuno, Elsa Charretier, Jamie McKelvie, Ram V, Jock and editor Will Dennis.

With a business structure set to benefit creators like no other (actual partnerships with financial stakes), the anticipation around their first project has astronomical. This week, DSTLRY makes their debut on New Comic Book Day with The Devils Cut.

The special edition features 11 short stories from the founding members and others. Let’s not wait any longer and see how DSTLRY makes their initial debut, shall we?

THE DEVIL’S CUT (CREDIT: DSTLRY MEDIA - COVER :JOCK)

Due to the amount of stories, the overview of each tale will be shorter than usual reviews.

The book opens up with “Spectregraph” by Tynion IV, Christian Ward, and Aditya Bidikar - It centers around a job proposition that is more than anyone expects. Incredible art by Ward leaves a lasting impression by the time the final image appears. Perfect way to kick off the first impressions of the book and brand.

“SHEPARD” by Bernardin, Ariela Kristantina, Lee Loughridge, and Bernardo Brice - A sci-fi tale that only scratches the surface but will leave readers wanting more. The creative team meshes a mystery behind the futuristic set-up. Clearly, this story is far from being completed.

“8 Rules To Make It Out In One Piece” by Charretier, PK Colinet, Nick Filardi, and Clayton Cowles - An outrageous spy thriller that is sure to win readers over. Sharp writing keeps things moving through Colinet’s eye-catching visuals. Fun caption to close out with as this story might not be over just yet.

“What’s Mine is Hearse” by Phillips, Joëlle Jones, and Lucas Gattoni - The Wildest story of the eleven without question! Phillips and Jones present an unhinged lead character and their “unique” vision of love. Great work from the creative team giving the readers a true sense of pushing the limits with the freedom of creating at DSTLRY offers.

“A Blessed Day” by Mirka Andolfo, Fabio Amelia, Arancia Studio and Steve Orlando - a mix of fame, religion and the supernatural. Welcome to the world of Lev with haunting words filling the pages of the bright lights and big city feel of the visuals.

“The STOWAWAY” by Jock - a young boy’s mission to survive turns chaotic with the legendary art of Jock guiding readers along. Pacing keeps things escalading as the tension rises with each panel. With “Gone” following this book, fans of this story will be even more excited for October.

“DELETED SCENE, #2” BY Azzarello, Eduardo Risso, and Jared K. Flecther - a chilling western with a surprisng cause of events. Excellent two-page visuals to wrap things up with, leaving readers wanting to hear more of the tale being woven.

“WHITE BOAT” by Snyder, Francesco Francavilla, Andworld Design, and Tyler Jennes - The creative team behind “Night Of The Ghoul” strikes again with horror at high tide. Snyder’s gripping writing with the impectable work of Francavilla makes this one story no one will want to miss!

“What Happens Next” by McKelvie and Bidikar - a futuristic tale that literally challenges readers to watch as two individuals challenge the perfect status quo. McKelvie delivers stunning visuals around the thought provoking writing. The ending leaves much to the imagination of where things go from here.

“Waiting To Die” by Ram V, Garbett, Loughridge and Bidikar - With an impending solar flare affecting all in its’ sight, the creative team gives a fresh perspective on the idea of what one does in their final moments. The writing jumps out as choices are made and the repercussions don’t escape. Excellent artwork to back this stellar story out before closing with show stealing visuals.

“What Blighted Flame Burns In Thee” by Cloonan, Lotay and Richard Starkings - An escape from certain doom sets the stage for an accused witch’s tale with stunning visuals from Lotay. It is a fitting creative experience to cap off what is sure to be a highly discussed debut.

It is a challenge to deliver on hype. With a roster of creators with the pedigree they each possess, expectations can be almost unreachable. However, “The Devil’s Cut” firmly plants DSTLRY’s stake in the ground as they make a bold first impression for readers.

From the opening salvo of “Spectregraph”, Tynion and Ward swiftly set the pace for what lies ahead. The story is brooding but has a certain mystique to it as well. In contrast, “8 Rules To Make It Out In One Piece” gives readers a more playful look at the spy game. The story is just fun and never takes itself too seriously. It’s a big win for readers looking for something different at the shops.

Throughout the entire issue, the creators take full advantage of the freedom that you only get when it’s completely hands-free from a publisher. The biggest example of this is “What’s Mine is Hearse” by Phillips and Jones. The concept is very non-traditional but the creative team puts such a distinctive spin on the theme, it can’t be denied. “Waiting To Die” plays into flipping traditional ideas and repacking concepts. The story runs deeper than one might think and the final parting image soldifies that.

The artistry on display throughout the book is to be admired as well. Francavilla has mastered the building of horror tales that with “White Boat”, he times everything out perfectly to capture the moments. The use of two page spreads works to build the anticipation toward the story’s revelations. Cloonan and Lotay’s “What Blighted Flame Burns In Thee” hits their marks mixing in color usage to nail key imagery of their story to close out the monster debut.

Each of the eleven stories at hand could be broken down into greater detail. All carry a distinct weight and feel that truly demonstrates the message DSTLRY wants to project.

BATMAN / CATWOMAN: THE GOTHAM WAR - BATTLE LINES #1 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we are taking a look at a major event hitting Gotham City via DC Comics. Through the course of history, the relationship between Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Selina Kyle (Catwoman) can easily be defined as “Complicated”. Lovers, Allies, Enemies….they’ve been it all over decades. Recently, it has been strained stemming from a failed marriage attempt. Like I said … “complicated.”

Coming off the fallout from Knight Terrors, a new stat quo has been established for Gotham, which has major ramifications on the city’s family of protectors. Batman / Catwoman: The Gotham War - Battle Lines #1 by Chip Zdarsky, Tini Howard, Mike Hawthorne, Adriano Di Benedetto, and Romulo Fajardo Jr. lights the match for what is sure to be an explosive story. Let’s take a closer look and see how things kick off, shall we?

The story begins as a nameless man returns home from his dangerous line of work. Readers see that the man worked for Professor Pyg, taking a beating for failing him. As he lays down to rest, a cat is at his window with a message tied to its’ collar. The message reads “If you risk your life … you deserve the rewards” with an address underneath.

Meanwhile, Batman is recapping his past few weeks, finishing with a visual of the “Knight Terrors” story. Exhausted, Batman finally collapses to sleep. In his dreamscape, he runs into an old friend: Zur-En-Arrh. if anyone doesn’t know, Batman has an emergency personality that takes over when he is too far broken down. Zur-En-Arrh leaves Bruce with parting words to rest up before disappearing in his subconscious.

Bruce Wayne wakes up in his home surroundings. Readers find out that he’s been asleep for EIGHT WEEKS (due to the toll his body took in “Knight Terrors"). Ready to pick up his fight of Justice, Batman senses something is different.

Scouring the streets of Gotham, he comes across a museum. Investigating, Batman comes across two low level henchmen trying to steal a diamond. In pursuit, they escape but someone else has stolen the jewelry. This looks very suspect from the normal criminal moves.

All the while, a criminal named Roland (possibly the same man from the beginning with newly dyed hair) appears to be training on how to steal. His mentor: Catwoman?! What has been going on in the streets of Gotham since Batman has been gone? Why is Catwoman training criminals?

Readers quickly find out that a new movement has been brought to the city and some will not be fans of this. Things escalate to a point where the lines of communication are severed. There is no turning back now after the final pages. There will be a war in the streets of Gotham. What side will you be on?

Zdarsky and Howard set wheels in motion for a defining moment in the relationship between the Bat and the Cat. With Batman recovering from the events of “Knight Terrors”, the writers test Batman as the city has moved on without him. The movement Catwoman is leading is a very unique concept. It challenges the ethics of Batman (without the “No Killing” standard), which plays against his greatest fear: losing Gotham. As dedicated as he is, the loss of the city he’s sworn to protect is one he will not let happen.

The writing team ties in the Bat-Family reactions very well as the message reaction is mixed. Pacing moves very briskly to get the major plot points time to shine. The strongest moment of the book is the meeting of the family, where Catwoman states her plan and how it is doing. The reactions of Batman play out as one would expect but Zdarsky and Howard mix in the personal shots to drive home the emotional impact of past events. The closing act leaves a great easter egg heading into the next chapter. The team lays a solid foundation to build from with this arc.

Hawthorne and Di Benedetto tie in the after effects of “Knight Terrors” as a strong start to the next phase of this story. The Zur-En-Arrh reveal keeps readers guessing as to what that persona plays into the current story. The art team also gives readers a vintage feel to the crimefighting panels of Batman that readers have come to expect. They have more of a “superhero” feel than grim and gritty but works superbly for the story at hand.

The “Family Meeting” scenes are the big visuals readers will be talking about here. Catwoman comes off defiant and seemingly victorious before Batman even says a say. The banter between them is reflected in the growing body language where business becomes more emotional. Selina’s facial expressions as she brings up past events makes a lasting impression. The closing pages cap off those emotions tying things back full circle while subtly dropping a hint at what may lie ahead.

The battle between the first couple of Gotham challenges the status quo with an excellent kickoff story. Zdarsky and Howard craft a story grounded in multi-layered writing with the art team spotlighting this conflict is more personal than fighting the good fight. Don’t miss this at the local Comic Shops this week!

BOOK OF EVIL #4 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

For this entry, we have reached the conclusion of a mesmerizing story from Best Jackett Press, home of the Scott Snyder line of books for Comixology Originals. Since it’s debut with We Have Demons (w/art from Greg Capullo), the line has been a fan favorite for both digital and print readers.

Debuting for Comixology then transitioning to the local comic shops via Dark Horse Comics, The line has produced hit series such as Clear (w/ Francis Manupal), Night Of The Ghoul (w/ Francesco Francavilla), Canary (w/ Dan Panosian) and the Eisner winning Barnstormers (w/ Tula Lotay) to name a few. With a new phase of series about to start, the second wave of books near completion of their current runs,

One of those finales is Book Of Evil from Synder, Jock and Emma Price. The nightmare landscape prepares to unveil Homer and his friends’ fate with issue #4. Let’s see how the coming of age story completes its’ run, shall we?

A 12 yr old boy named Homer is an “animal”. At least that is what society has defined him as. In the 1960’s, children were demonstrating behavior cyphered as “psychopathic” once they reached 14-16 yrs old. Only 8% have not changed and are deemed “animals” or less than human.

Homer doesn’t have the easiest life. “Humans” are making his days miserable. When his brother Poe goes missing, Homer takes action. With his friends Blake, Milton and Elliot, Homer sets out to find out where his brother is and fearing the worst. Finding his brother isn’t Homer’s only goal. A cartoon written by E. C. Happ known as “The Book Of Evil” might hold the clues on how to find Happ and possibly end this hellish period of humanity once and for all.

Their journey has led them right into danger’s doorway. From a group known as “Shepards”, with a human Poe in tow to a new colony of “ghosts”, Homer has encountered terrors no one his age should ever cross. With the Shepards in pursuit, it looks like Homer and company might catch a break. It appears they have finally tracked down the location of E.C. Happ!

The finale begins with Homer narrating the history of “The Book Of Evil”. Readers find out about the 610 chapters/installments of the cartoon. The chapters center around the Goode Brothers as they embark on trying to fix the crisis of “humans”. The words paint a bleak picture of what they are enduring with a cartoonish feel.

From this point, the story jumps to Homer and his friends breaking a latch to enter an area that they have only dreamt of. The group has made it to Fort Goode. As they walk into the refuge of their hope, they see a fireplace lit with food on a table. The group is scared to think who is here. The fears are put to ease as a voice makes their Prescence known. The voice belongs to E.C. Happ!

The conversation Homer has been waiting to have finally arrives! Is there hope in the hopeless world? Readers find out that the answer is not so easy. The complexity of the situation brings out many emotions from the group. Happ’s breakdown of the world is one that will catch some off-guard. Will Homer accept the information or fight back?

The closing arc will provide a fitting and satisfying end to a story that keeps tugging at emotional heartstrings. Events speed up long enough to catch readers not expecting certain outcomes. A well-crafted final page ties up what has been an excellent read to dive into.

Snyder poses a great question in this finale issue: Is a dream worth it if it was only a dream? The differing views of Happ and Homer bring this to light as their interactions play off as strong segments. The viewpoints of an “animal” will clash with someone who sees the world through different eyes. Snyder challenges the readers with whose argument is stronger. There are great surprises brought out for the finale which readers can’t help but feel. This builds into a fast-moving final act as time becomes a factor for all involved. The closing moments will hit their marks and leave a lasting impression. The series has been an intense read and the finale never falters driving that home in the closing moments. Another excellent story from Snyder and this line of books!

The look and panel structure of this series has been very different than other comics at the local comic shops. That said, when Jock drops a visual in this series, it is not to be missed. The initial introduction to Fort Goode jumps out with the use of coloring showing the fireplace and table of food. This is matched with a full page shot late in the book to hit readers with a strong emotional visual before bringing the story to an end.

The usage of colors makes another prime case of creativity later in the issue. When red and yellow hits the pages here, it represents more than the usual danger at hand. Emma Price deserves to be acknowledged for her format presentation in this series as well. This is not your average comic. Book Of Evil comes across as a journal into growing up more than what some might expect. It stands on its’ own and won’t be soon forgotten.

Homer’s odyssey comes to a thrilling and heart-breaking end within the pages of Best Jackett Press’s latest hit. Snyder, Jock and Price give readers superb writing with haunting visuals to bring the curtain down on what has been a chilling tale of hope and hurt. Make a point to pick this up digitally or in print when it drops in at the local comic shops.

BATTLE CHASERS #12 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest installment from the epic return of one of comic’s most legendary fantasy series. Since its’ return after a LONG hiatus, the Image Comics series hasn’t faltered recapturing the magic that made this book popular in the late 1990’s! Two issues back and the fans have been greeted to a phenomenal run leading into this latest installment.

Battle Chasers #12 by Joe Madureira and LUDO LULLABI continues the saga of Garrison, Red Monika, Gully, Calibretto aka Bretto & Knolan as the world of Gaia falls further into chaos! Let’s take a look at how the latest chapter progresses, shall we?

Last we saw our favorite characters, things were very grim. Garrison and Red Monika have been getting hunted by Mastreo and the Martial Paladins. Gully, Calibretto and Knolan have been under the watch of King Vaneer!

As readers start this issue, Knolan is pleading with the King about Gully being in possession of her father Aramus’s magical gauntlets. the King is none too pleased with this and gives a stern warning to Knolan about loyalty.

Meanwhile, Garrison has gone thru a transformation while facing certain doom from the Master Paladins. He has re-emerged as a blue-skinned figure, seething with energy. Limbo, one of the Paladins, looks ready to strike but is now not dealing with Garrision, but a figure named Wrenneth.

What happens now with Wrenneth in control? The action is taken up few notches as the darker side of Garrison is released. Does Mastreo know what is unleashed now? And what of Red Monika? There is no shortage of excitement coming from this issue as things shift in a new direction for Gaia’s fiercest warriors.

Madureira splits up time between Garrision’s and Gully’s stories more equally this go-around than previously. Garrison’s has a more balanced narrative with mystery and action. It’s caped off with big action and showing a possible threat to what the King has been preparing for.

Gully’s is slow-building into more but has many moving parts attached. With her brother arrested and facing a possible end, Gully is still searching for her own path. The supporting cast there gives more support to the story but has some ways to go which I’m assuming will be heavily feature in the next arc. The issue finishes with a solid build for that story whenever issue #13 hits the shelves.

LULLABI firmly establishes the terrifying potential of Wrenneth during the action panels. The pace is fast and holds nothing back as Wrenneth deals with the Paladins. Right down to the evil smile, the art reflects how much evil is flowing thru Garrison at those moments. the action involving Red Monika doesn’t hit any brakes either.

Fans who want big battles have plenty to enjoy. The Gully portion does more foundation building with Sebastian Nefar pulling the strings. Those panels ultimately lead to a definitive close for the return arc with plenty of ideas to where things head to next.

The first arc back for the legendary fantasy series wraps up one story while setting the stage to an ever bigger tale in the near future. Madureira and Lullabi continue their successful formula of strong writing and artwork to leave no doubt to new and old readers alike that Battle Chasers is back and here to stay!

ROGUE SUN #15 (IMAGE COMICS via BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE)

For this entry, the Massive-Verse from IMAGE COMICS via BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE has come back in a monster way since the “Supermassive 2023” crossover event. One series that is kicking into the next level is Rogue Sun. The adventures of Dylan Siegal have been anything but calm as the latest arc has challenged him like never before.

Dylan’s tenure as the defender of the supernatural hasn’t exactly been an easy road. His estranged dead father’s spirit served as a mentor until Dylan decided to dismiss him. The replacement turned out to be Caleb Hawthorne, the Knight Sun. When Dylan couldn’t defeat Hellbent on his own, he turned over control of his body to Caleb to secure victory. However with that choice, Caleb has decided not to relinquish hold.

Now a literal prisoner in his own body, Dylan is learning the hard way that not every hero has good intentions.

With full possession of Dylan’s body and the power of the Sun Stone, Caleb has summoned the attention of Mourningstar, who has been responsible for most of Dylan’s troubles as Rogue Sun.

This issue kicks off with Caleb facing off with Mourningstar and her minions of creatures. What appears to be a challenge turns into a surprise no one is expecting. Caleb hasn’t come to fight, he’s come with a proposition. It is one readers will not believe when they read it!

Meanwhile, Dylan is meeting with his father and Grandfather in the astral plane in a configured reminder of family life: a cabin in the woods. The trio converse about life as Rogue Suns and how Dylan should move forward. Their journey takes them into a place where Dylan learns about the history of the mantle he once had. Dylan also makes a choice with big ramifications.

What choices are made? Can the heroes survive with the decisions they made? Readers witness how choices are always followed by consequences. Even with these stories going on, the final act drops one f the biggest shocking moments in this series history and that is saying something! Readers - BRACE FOR THE LAST PAGE!

Parrott continues to weave more surprises and twists into Dylan’s life proving that any ideas you have about this series are far from concrete. The opening moments with Caleb and Mourningstar proves to be a solid pace setter for the remaining plots in this issue/story. Caleb has been one character that keeps his true intentions close to the vest but appears to be peeling back some of those layers with his actions. The family “reunion” breaks away from the overall story long enough to give some insight into the Bell’s dynamic while challenging if the powers of Rogue Sun affects the wielder more than anything thinks. Excellent final act to raise the stakes even higher as Dylan and Caleb appear on a much needed collision course.

Abel and Renna continue to be a winning team splitting art duties. Caleb’s body language with Mourningstar speaks volumes without seeing his face. The feel is tense as the enemies could attack at any moment. The family time showcases the strained relationship the Bell/Siegal family have with the pent-up emotions pouring out on the panels. Events move at a quick pace but never loses the readers attention as the escalation grows. It’s perfectly capped off with a final act and mind-blowing parting visual that will leave readers shocked at what’s about to happen next.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The life and times of Dylan Siegal never disappoint as the creative team continues to find ways to lead readers into directions that no one sees coming. Parrott delivers on the drama with exceptional writing. Factor in the one-two punch of Abela and Renna (along with the rest of the team) and Rogue Sun continues to be a must have on New Comic Book day.
