Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! The “Charge To 100” continues in the right direction for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Universe for Boom Studios. Mighty Morphin’ #22 by Mat Groom, Moises Hidalgo, Raul Angulo, and Ed Dukeshire has a fun story going on focusing on one Ranger’s feelings towards legacy. After all the adventures the heroes have been thru, the uncertainty of the future has been looming. Let’s jump into this issue and see how this story plays out, shall we?

The issue opens up with Kimberly and Tommy stuck in an experimental dimension that has gone a bit haywire. Some rogues have now made their appearances in this landscape. None of which have any love loss with the pair of Rangers. Forced to battle, the pair is completely overwhelmed with Tommy left extremely hurt in the altercation. Kimberly gets Tommy to safety and also some divine intervention in the form of an emissary Ranger.

The conversation gives some much needed clarity on what Kimberly has been dealing with during this story. For better or worse, there is an understanding. With this information, Kimberly makes a call on how to handle her situation. Without Tommy to help, how will this play out? Readers will get that answer and a sense of where the future lies for not only the Pink Ranger but the heroes of Angel Grove as well. Excellent epilogue to cap this issue off as well.

Kimberly’s story these past two issues has been an enjoyable read. Groom breaks down the uncertainty of the future very well. We as readers often think that heroes will do this forever, but at the same time, it’s a question that will pop up from time to time in comics. The conversations Kimberly has during this issue brings that to the forefront. The resolution to those questions is one readers will be pleased with. Readers are also going to be excited to see how Kimberly finds a way to stand up to the rogues.

Hidalgo’s work is such a great compliment to the story. The facial expressions of Kimberly give an added weight to Groom’s writing. They will definitely connect with the readers about what direction she is heading into from these moments. With all the talking happening here, there’s also a healthy does of action to balance. Just wait until you see the two page spread before Kimberly addresses the rogues. The action has big momentum to it and provides for some memorable panels. There is much for readers to be pleased with involving this story.

Overall, Mighty Morphin’ #22 caps off a great story for one of the most well known rangers. Groom and Hidalgo present Kimberly’s questions of what to come with exceptional storytelling and art. As all roads head towards the “Charge To 100”, this story is a solid complement to whats to come. Make sure to keep an eye out for it at the LCS this week.

Lets check out the latest issue on the road to finishing this series, shall we?

A play is made by Mary to acquire something that could be the turning point in this entire struggle. It’s a risky move but appears to work in favor. With this weapon in hand, Mary presents it to one of he King Arthur’s and their court. In this exchange, Mary finds out the truth behind one of these so called “kings.” The reveal is very well done and the fallout becomes even better. All of this is relayed to Bridgette, who’s planning on strategy since the Christmas Day truce is over.

The heroes make their way to parliament Square to try undoing King Lear’s magic. The resolution of this is one for the ages. All the while, readers see an epic battle of two kings which ends in a very shocking matter! Does Bridgette’s plan go off without a hitch? In this world of magic , no bet is a safe bet. As readers will find out, no good deed goes unpunished as there’s a massive change no one saw coming…and a final one was ready for! Trust me when I saw, this issue doesn’t disappoint and there are so many crucial moments that need to be read rather than spoiled.

Gillen hits the gas pedal with moving into the final act with this issue. Bridgette ad Mary working together was one thing, but seeing the plan come to fruition was a wild ride. The backstory on one king was a great read and added to the tragic tale that can only come from this saga. In a game of kings, there can only be one. The storytelling hits on the marks. Even when she thinks she has the answers, Bridgette shows flaws that only add to the story overall. The final sequence of events deliver on the drama and no one is ready for that final page.

Mora continues to showcase why he’s arguably the best artist in comics right now. The action sequences hold nothing back. the attention to detail shines thru. The story of the one King is extremely well done and the imagery really conveys the emotions felt by its narrator. Seeing Lear make his move was another strong point to the book. When moments like this jump off pages, readers know that they have much to enjoy with the story. The final image of the book drives home the point the story is near the end. Expect much buzz from the fan base after reading this one.

Overall, Once and Future #28 sets the pace for ending one of the best stories in comics. Gillen and Mora present a heavy narrative will excellent story and art to send this comic into its’ final stand. Don’t miss picking this book up at the LCS this week! It’s some of the best creative work in the business for a reason.

For this edition, we’re checking out the final story arc of one of the most intense reads at the LCS. Basilisk #10 by Cullen Bunn, Jonas Scharf, Alex Guimaraes & Ed Dukeshire for Boom Studios has been a wild read with the saga of a lone survivor against the fearsome supernatural five. The comics has been picking up steam with .some of the most brutal action sequences in comics. The major players are setting up for the ultimate encounter. Let’s see how the latest chapter is taking readers towards the final stand of the Chimera, shall we?

This issue kicks off with an eerie origin story for Vanessa, the lead of the Chimera. It’s a very in your face opening that results into present time with Vanessa waking up in a colony of disciples. The group appears to be preparing on unleashing a healthy Vanessa onto the world after her last battle with Hannah.

Meanwhile, Hannah is still in a hospital from her last battle. She begins to think back to her family, who were original victims to the Chimera. Now, Hannah is alone after cutting ties with Regan, the lone defector of the Chimera. Speaking of Regan, she is approached by Barret and his Chimera followers. After an order was subtly given, Barret’s followers invade the hospital and start killing everyone in sight looking for Hannah. The scene’s pull no punches as Hannah fights to survive.

Just when readers think they’re going to have this story figured out, The major players left are now flipped in direction in what will be one of the craziest endings in recent memory. The long time readers will not be ready for what the final page means. The game has now changed. The direction of the book is now set. All bets are off for what’s coming.

Bunn is really setting the table for the final showdown here. Hannah and Vanessa’s collision course has been very engaging to readers to see how it will all unfold. Vanessa has had a “fall from Grace” ordeal in relearning about her past, On the other side of the coin, Hannah has come to terms that ending the Chimera once and for all might cost her everything, but the ends justify the means. The role players are adding to the intensity of the moments while not stealing anything away from the inevitable end. The mood is dire, and the future is bleak. Could this story end any other way. Great storytelling.

Scharf continues to deliver some of the most brutal scenes with the violence in this issue. The raid of the hospital is intense and graphic. Readers see how fanatic the Chimera followers have turned. Hannah’s fight to survive shows how far of a character growth she’s gone thru. Readers also get a grim look at Vanessa’s beginnings with the flashback sequence to open the book. The shift from grey/blue to light/brown was a great touch to illustrate the points. Very well done.

Overall, Basilisk #10 delivers on the calm and the violence. It doesn’t hold back from the brutality of its story but does offer some quiet moments before all hell breaks loose. Bunn and Scharf bring the story to a fever pitch before lighting the ending match. You simply can’t miss this comic at the LCS.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary comic book blog section to the ODPH podcast! Image Comics & Black Market Narrative are hitting the comic shops with one of the most anticipated comics of the year on August 3rd! The Dead Lucky #1 by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO and BECCA CAREY introduces readers to the latest character entering into one of the most exciting and creative universes in comics today: the “The Massive-Verse” (home to Rogue Sun, Inferno Girl Red and the 2022 Eisner Award Nominee for Best New Series: Radiant Black).

The Dead Lucky has been on the radar from a feature in the “SuperMassive” comic in February 2022. Since then, the hype has been building to a fever pitch. The ODPH (along with Tom Craven from Off The Cuff Gaming/That Hashtag Show) talked to Melissa Flores about this book a few weeks back. #DeadLuckyDay is finally here and the issue is now out in stores. Let’s take a deeper dive into the debut and break this book down, shall we?

The Dead Lucky #1 - On Sale August 3rd

The Dead Lucky centers around a character by the name of Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka Bibi. Bibi is an honorably discharged veteran who has returning to civilian life after serving in Afghanistan. The issue opens up with Bibi talking to a therapist. Bibi is now returning to her home of San Francisco which both her and her city are drastically changed from the time she left.

San Francisco is now under the “protective” eye of Morrow, a tech corporation that is trying to make the city into a “city of tomorrow.” Morrow has a unique way of presenting their case with “Guardian” robots patrolling the city. One area of interest is Bibi’s family’s restaurant, Chi-Mexi-Q located in Chinatown. Morrow representatives allude to Bibi’s family if they don’t comply with Morrow’s vision of the city (and relocate) then they would have no protection from the Salvation Gang.

Morrow claims they are domestic terrorists. The Salvation Gang claim to be ending Morrow’s reign. With their power struggle right in her hometown, Bibi gets involved (with a few tricks up her sleeves as well as a bit of help as seen below). How does this altercation end up? What is Morrow really up to? What about the Salvation Gang? and THAT LAST PAGE! Readers will have much to enjoyably discuss after reading this excellent first issue.

What a fantastic read! Flores does an impressive job introducing readers to Bibi and her city of San Francisco. Opening the issue with seeing how Bibi is handling her mental health post service (PTSD and Survivor’s Guilt) via therapy was a strong way to connect readers to her character. This style of storytelling also stands out when Bibi is “talking” to the reader right after her initial encounter with Morrow (see “I’m Not a soldier…” page for example). Another noteworthy element of this issue is seeing the dynamic of San Francisco. The city is a character itself, with a distinctiveness all its own. Morrow’s vision of tomorrow vs. the people refusing to change is a conflict to keep an eye on. Factor in the Salvation Gang’s role and there are many moving parts involved. Flores pulls this off easily balancing the major players while allowing Bibi to have her moments with her supporting cast and becoming a reluctant hero in the process.

Carlomagno and Iacono crush the art duties for a dynamic debut issue. The city of San Francisco has a very undeniable feel to it. Meshing the world of tech into the landscape here feels more organic than readers might think. The action sequences capture the intensity of the moments. However, Carlomagno’s strengths this issue has to be the personal moments with Bibi and her supporting cast. The talks with Bibi and her therapist to the Morrow representative discussing the “business deal” with Bibi’s parents jump out as fragments of the story that translate to the reader this isn’t an ordinary super hero comic. There is a lot to be excited about for fans, especially with a jaw-dropping last page.

Overall, The Massive-Verse has a huge addition on their hands that readers simply can’t miss! Flores, Carlomagno, Iacono and Carey present an engaging lead character and her world with spectacular storytelling and phenomenal art. The Dead Lucky #1 debuts with a must-read issue that fans simply won’t be able to put down. Make your way to the local comic shop on #DeadLuckyDay (August 3rd.) and get this comic! Highly recommended!

Welcome to a special edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog section of the ODPH podcast. For this edition, we’re checking out a brand new comic series heading to the small screen on July 29th. Paper Girls is the latest addition to what is slowly becoming the go-to landing spot for independent comics on TV/streaming via Prime Video. The 2015 Image Comic, created by Brian K. Vaughan (known for Saga, Runaways and Y: the Last Man to name a few) & Cliff Chiang , is a former Eisner winner and now joins the ranks of The Boys and Invincible as the latest independent comics to cross over to Amazon Studios along with Legendary Television, in connection with Plan B.

“Paper Girls” ran until July 2019. Shortly there after, a TV production deal was announced. The show was met with a very positive 2022 San Diego Comic Con panel and is set to premiere (all 8 episodes) with a ton of hype behind it. The ODPHpod was granted early screening privileges to the series so here is out SPOILER FREE review!

The plot synopsis (quote courtesy of Amazon studios) reads as follows: “In the early morning hours after Halloween 1988, four paper girls—Erin, Mac, Tiffany, and KJ—are out on their delivery route when they become caught in the crossfire between warring time-travelers, changing the course of their lives forever. Transported into the future, these girls must figure out a way to get back home to the past, a journey that will bring them face-to-face with the grown-up versions of themselves. While reconciling that their futures are far different than their 12-year-old selves imagined, they are being hunted by a militant faction of time-travelers known as the Old Watch, who have outlawed time travel so that they can stay in power. In order to survive, the girls will need to overcome their differences and learn to trust each other, and themselves.”

The show stars Camryn Jones (playing Tiffany Quilkin), Sofia Rosinsky (Mac Coyle), Riley Lai Nelet (Erin Tieng) and Fina Strazza (KJ Brandman) as the four paper girls in the center of this story. The rest of the cast is filled out by Nate Corddry, Ali Wong and Adina Porter.

Being that this a SPOILER-FREE review, trust me when I say: The show lives up to the early buzz behind it. Whenever time travel is used as a major plot point in a series, it can always be tricky to pull off. Where “Paper Girls” does things right with the series is that it doesn’t focus viewers on the issue at hand. Where this show finds its strength is in the four young actresses who make the show about their journeys finding themselves more than the travel in time. The show allows all four to have their own individual moments without feeling like one overshadows the other.

However, the two actresses that will make strong cases for breakout stars from this season will be Fina Strazza (KJ) and Sofia Rosinsky (Mac). Due to the nature of each of their character’s journeys, both have very impactful performances once the show starts heading into the middle act. This especially holds true for Rosinsky as she shows many different sides to her character. For being only 16 years old, this was a very noteworthy performance from first episode to last. In comparison, Nelet (Erin) and Jones (Tiffany)’s respective arcs tie more into the overall story.

The rest of the cast does a great job bringing the sci-fi aspect to life in this series. There are excellent performances from Porter, Corddry, and Wong who bring the uniqueness of a time traveled world to the viewers. The overall story is one that will have non-readers of the comics engaged but (imo) never feeling lost in where the show is moving. The handling of time travel moments never feels too much and are spaced out well to showcase the leads.

The show does an excellent job with capturing the time periods that they are in as well. For being in 1988 to start, everything from the images surrounding to the music gives the story solid footing. The only “drawback” that might be wrongly mentioned is viewer’s claims that this is too much like Netflix’s “Stranger Things”. In a time period where most of pop culture had its attention drawn into, everything remotely close is being compared to the smash streaming hit. While I can see the comparisons’ idea: (4 young kids fighting something in the 1980’s, weird colorful imagery in the skies), that’s where the arguments end.

“Paper Girls” stands more on the strengths of the leads finding themselves more than fighting monsters in the Upside Down. Once the story gets moving, the direction the story heads is one that is more character driven than most viewers might realize. Sure, there are very noticeable sci-fi elements throughout the show. Do they take anything away form the show. Absolutely not. If anything, they serve as a break from the internal discovery of the leads. At some points, it may not seem to mesh as well, but once you near the conclusion of this run, it pays off. There are a few moments that viewers will be very amped to talk about in that aspect.

Overall, “Paper Girls” presents a strong character driven view into an ever changing landscape of time travel. Viewers will be immersed with the character portrayals of such a young cast. Each display their stories with many moving parts. It’s equally balanced out by a supporting cast that makes the fiction element feel somewhat normal without making the viewers disenfranchised to the overall theme.

As David Bowie once said: “Time may change me … But I can't trace time”

Something is Killing the Children #25 by James Tynion, Werther Dell’edera, Miquel Muerto & Andworld Design brings the return of Erica Slaughter to an impactful crossroads. If you’ve been reading the series thus far, brace yourself. If brand new to the series, expect a very cool read. Let’s take a deeper look at the anniversary (#25) issue of the series. shall we?

Something is Killing the Children #25 - On Sale July 27th

Erica Slaughter has returned on the radar as she is investigating a vicious murder scene in New Mexico. With a lone teenager as the only witness and a town that is not ready for what has encountered it, Erica’s work is cut out for her. Unknown to her, The Order of St. George has an assassin named Cutter hunting her down, who’s left nothing but death in her wake.

This issue kicks off with Cutter making her way to an undisclosed location. The small talk give an insight to readers about how unhinged Cutter is. A piece of clothing is brought out within that conversation this is sure to get a reaction out of readers. Meanwhile, Gabi the lone survivor, is having a conversation with Octo, Erica’s “companion”, who convinces her to search out the monster behind this whole mess. All the while Riqui, the bartender housing Gabi i having a one-on-one conversation with Erica.

The conversation takes a sharp turn as Gabi calls Riqui to say what she’s doing. From here, readers see a frantic race against the clock to save Gabi! The outcome is a big enough moment as is, but where the biggest buzz of this issue comes is when Cutter finally makes a bold move against Erica that will shake long-time readers to their core. Prepare yourselves now for this one. Excellent issue.

Tynion really outdoes himself with this issue. With two stories happening here, it could be easy to lose the impact of both. However, that’s not the case here. Erica’s case speeds up dramatically with a break in the case unexpected. The panels feel intense as Erica races to try saving Gabi. This could have been the sole story being told here, but it’s overshadowed by the actions of Cutter. Tynion really hits all the emotions with the fallout from Cutter’s first salvo against Erica. Readers are going to be heartbroken at the powerful conversation had with Erica surrounding these events. It truly showcase’s Tynion’s strengths as a writer.

Not to be overlooked, Dell’edera’s art sets the perfect background to the emotional issues. From the facial reactions of Cutter to the frantic attempt of Erica to save Gabi, the art showcases the moments perfectly to compliment the gravity of the moments. Where Dell’edera’s art truly shines in this issue is Erica’s reaction to what Cutter has done. Readers will literally be feeling the sequence of events and can’t help but feel sympathy for what’s happened to our lead character here.

Overall, SIKTC #25 delivers on a roller-coaster ride of exceptional storytelling within this issue. The creative team creates an issue that will connect with readers on a few different levels and one that will certainly be talked about for some time. Do not delay in getting this book (and previous issues if needed) from the LCS.

We’re taking a trip back to the supernatural side of the Valiant Universe with one of their most anticipated titles of 2022 dropping July 27th! Book Of Shadows #1 by CULLEN BUNN, VICENTE CIFUENTES, NICK FILARDI and DAVE SHARPE for Valiant Entertainment continues the adventures of a Valiant Original hero, Jack Boniface aka Shadowman. After 2 successful runs with Bunn leading the way with art duties by Jon Davis-Hunt and Pedro Andreo respectively, the latest round of supernatural action brings a new art team & definite change to where we last saw Shadowman. Let’s take a deeper dive with this book and see how the new status quo is shaping up, shall we?

Last readers saw Boniface, he was challenged with stopping the Deadside from invading into the realm of the living. In a dramatic turn of events, the conclusion of the “DeadSide War” resulted into Persephone, a blight who has now crossed over into the land of the living. With this powerful of a being now on Earth, Shadowman has taken her under his wing on his fight against evil. Highly recommend reading the past arcs to enhance what’s going on in BoS, but it’s not required for new readers.

This issue opens up with the traditional Valiant opening intros for new readers. The Tarot Card style breakdown is perfect for new readers jumping in. Top notch work here.

The story starts off in a carnival in Vernon Commons, Illinois. What starts out as a fun filled night of happiness quickly shifts into a violent rampage by supernatrural monsters. Luckily, Shadowman and Persephone join the fight to save the innocents’ lives. Persephone lets loose on her powers, unlocking the horrors of the Deadside but she’s still learning on controlling them. After dispersing of the creatures, the pair is joined by 2 other fan-favorites: PUNK MAMBO & DR. MIRAGE! After catching up with how everyones’ in the same place, Shadowman reveals a clue to this carnage. During the melee, one of the creatures drops a hint to their actions: The Dark Feast as proclaimed in the Book Of Shadows. Mambo responds by mentioning that once she caught wind of trouble, she called some favors: as in The ETERNAL WARRIOR!

Longtime Valiant readers will be excited to see one of the most bad-ass characters return as he should: fighting monsters! After disposing of the creatures, he is confronted by who appear to be the “chef” of the Dark Feats: Exarch Fane! The pair are old acquaintances and a battle begins anew! Readers are left with a final image that can’t help to make them amped up to see issue #2 immediately.

If you’re a new reader to the blog, first and foremost, Thank you for reading. Secondly, I’m a BIG Cullen Bunn fan and think he does fantastic work. Bunn gave a cool new energy to Shadowman during his solo run and those themes carry over to this book. Shadowman is the reluctant loner who now is burdened to watch Persephone while also trusting others to assist with the Supernatural. Bunn handles this perfectly as the dialogue is showcasing the hesitation with the others while acting like a surrogate parent with Persephone, who is very new to the ways of human emotions. The slow burn build with the Eternal Warrior fits as being an elder of the Valiant Universe, chances are he’s seen most everything. Bringing back an old enemy but with new powers adds a nice spin to the story. How this reluctant team can co-exist is anyone’s guess but I’m locked in for the ride.

Cifuentes brings to life some incredible action sequences throughout this issue. Both fights with Shadowman & Eternal Warrior vs the creatures hold nothing back. Brutal and to the point of how dangerous the threat can be. Cifuentes also handles the emotion of the people of the carnival and Persephone extremely well. It’s a minor layer of the story but does connect the reader to the overall theme. This issue is consistently balanced in is moments and is sure to please the readers.

Overall, Book of Shadows #1 kicks in the next phase of supernatural mystery with incredible story-telling and fantastic art. Bunn and Cifuentes deliver on taking some of the Valiant Finest along with the readers into another realm of action and magic that simply can not be missed. Make a point to get this book (along with Shadowman 1-8 by Bunn) at the LCS! Highly recommended.

The story picks up with Edwin Slaughter’s initial investigation of a mysterious campsite. After the first encounter, he sails away to use his unique perspective to cypher what is happening. While drifting at sea, Edwin starts talking to Hermes, his brush companion about what could possibly be next. Edwin (mentally) paints the picture of what their next plan of action should be. All the while, Hermes is becoming more impatient as time passes by.

Edwin starts breaking down a story of a family who drowned in a flood. When the story escalates, Hermes stops the story. As they make their way back to the island from sea, it appears the pair might be lost. Edwin breaks down where they are using the stars. Readers start noticing how Edwin sees the world is vastly different than most. From this, will the pair make it to shore? Did Edwin get more clues on what is killing people? What will he do with the information? There is a lot of questions that arise that readers will get some answers and theories to before closing this issue.

This issue really takes a deeper look at how Edwin sees the world. It’s a very unique take as his perception is giving this story something fresh in a character. Using Hermes as a balance to his visions has been a solid take. For being a red/scarlett mask with no real experience, Edwin is holding his own . Readers are seeing the slow build for something big to happen. The payoff should be excellent.

The art has a distinct look that makes Edwin’s world pop off the pages. The conversation with Hermes comes off “normal” as it possibly can be. The flashback sequence to the story he tells Hermes is well done. It captures the terror and fear of that moment perfectly. Readers will also enjoy the small foreshadowing of Edwin’s vision being correct in its’ assumptions. Without spoiling anything, there’s a 2 page spread late that hits the mark without revealing everything. Solid work all around.

Overall, the slow-burn of House Of Slaughter #7 spotlights its’ unique lead character. Storytelling and art deliver on painting a standout perspective of what this story is capable of. It’s just getting started now so make sure you snag a copy at the LCS this week and don’t miss when this pace picks up. It feels as it will be a memorable journey to watch along.

For this edition, we’re checking out one of the best comics out there and one that’s an immediate must grab on Comixology Originals. The All-Nighter #8 by Chip Zdarsky, Jason Loo, Paris Alleyne, Aditya Bidikar & Allison O’Toole has been such a fantastic read. The mysterious “family” & their epic diner have been serving up some supernatural excitement for readers since it’s resumed on its’ second arc. (Note: While available on Comixology, The first story is now available via Dark Horse Comics for anyone interested in a print version). Where is the story heading now? Let’s check out the latest issue and see, shall we?

The All-Nighter #8 - On Sale July 26th

The Vampire “Family” of the All-Nighter Diner has been fractured over the past few issues. Ian, the patriarch/leader of the group has been missing and is captured. Cynthia, the second in command, is trying to hold things together while Ian is gone. Joy, the “youngest”, has left to reconnect with her mother while Alex, “the teenager” is still trying to be a “super hero” but has some competition with a new group of heroes named “The Justice Angels.” That’s only been the past few issues!

This issue opens up with a flashback sequence of another vampire named Charlie. When Charlie accidentally reveals himself to being a vampire, mysterious forces are trying to right that wrong. It’s an intense scene of events. All of this happens before Joy’s eyes until she is suddenly snapped back to reality where she is talking with her mother. During this moment, Joy’s dream of going back to her life before being a vampire is shown to be shifting in a different unplanned direction.

Meanwhile, “Francis’”, an ally to Cynthia , is confronted by Lazaruk, leader of The Justice Angels. Long time readers of this series know that there’s more that meets the eyes to both of these characters. Lazaruk is there to offer Francis a spot in his overall plan. It is one met with resistance as it is very ambitious but also very dangerous. Francis is left with much to think about.

With this information, he confronts, Cynthia and Alex, who are returning to the diner after last issue’s troubles. With the meeting of the three, Ian’s whereabouts are presumed and true nature is revealed. Francis also divulges Lazaruk’s plan. With little time to spare, the trio makes some moves. Readers are left with a returning character making an appearance but is greeted by someone they weren’t expecting and the last words will have readers very locked in for next issue.

Zdarsky really picks up the tension with this issue. Hearing Lazaruk’s plan explained is one that has dire consequences if he achieves it or not. With all the cards laid on the table, our heroes have decisions to be made. The quest to find “normalcy” seems to be fading further away with every action. This point is driven home with Joy’s story. Zdarsky crafts an extremely emotional break from the regular story to drive that point. The X factor in all of this might be Andrea, the former cop and human ally. The writing hits all the marks this issue (per usual) pushing the pace forward to what feels like a huge moment for our group.

Loo presents Joy’s story with much emotion and honesty as dealing with her return home. Seeing how her family reacts with Joy’s new life will hit readers very hard. The flashback sequence with Charlie leads to some great foreshadowing later on in the issue. Seeing the reactions of Cynthia and Alex to Francis’s omissions was very well done. The last page and line of the book capped off another solid issue of work. I can’t stress enough: this creative team is putting together one of the best comics out right now and there’s no reason not to give it a read with the consistent quality every time.

Overall, The All-Nighter #8 speeds up the drama with some big time revelations that shake the group right to the core. Zdarsky and Loo have been making some fantastic and imaginative stories within these pages. The supernatural elements mixed in with the human emotions of a group trying to find their place is must read material for any comic fan. Make sure to check this out on Comixology Originals this week as well as keep an eye out for the print version via Dark Horse Comics when available.

Grim #3 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano for Boom Studios has been an absolutely must-read story. The book has already gone into multiple printings out the gate, so the fan reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. Let’s not waste any more time and jump into the latest adventure of comics’ most popular reaper, shall we?

Grim #3 - On Sale July 20th

Jessica Harrow’s (after)life has been anything but normal. Jessica is a reaper who guides the departed into the after life. On a recent case, the transfer went awry and Jessica wound up crossing over into the land of the living. This broke a cardinal rule with her boss Adira. While under suspension, Jessica and a few of her friends attempted to find out some answers on how this happened. During this action, Adira discovered them and locked them up. What could be the big secret? And WHAT is that big monster running thru people at the Day of The Dead celebration in Mexico? Maybe we get some answers here?

This issue starts off with a flashback to Mesopotamia to where a ritual is being performed. The result is a younger Adira emerging and gathering souls to “fight in a battle for Eternity”. The story shifts to present time where Adira is confronted by The End, the big monster we saw in Mexico for issue #2. It’s mission: restore balance …. by handling the Jessica Harrow situation personally. Adira throws an idea its’ way which could be a game changer.

As for Jessica, She is trying to assess the situation until time runs out. How does it play out for her and her friends? Who can stop The End if she can’t? And how bout that last panel? You’ll need to read and find out!

Phillips continues to crush it with this series. It might sound repetitive at this point but when the story has such great surprises mixed in, it makes for an engaging story. That is the case with this book. Jessica’s story continues to go in new directions that has me as a reader constantly guessing. There are so many layers to what it happening here and who is really “good” in this world, other than Jessica at this stage. Readers see more characters have their moments here and will enjoy picking this issue up.

Flaviano drops another visually impressive issue on readers. The flashback of Adira locks you in from the jump. The depiction of the afterlife is so well done. Seeing how Adira holds court with The End is a haunting moment with all the other souls around. The action sequences pop off the pages as well, espically with one characters’ “death”. It’s such a compliment to the story. Great last panel to close out one.

Overall, Grim continues to be a must-read series. Phillips, Flaviano, and the rest of the creative team are presenting a very unique story that always impresses. The story of Jessica Harrow is only beginning so jump on board now and don’t miss it at the LCS!

For this edition, we’re concluding a series from Valiant Entertainment that has been a big hit with fans. Armorclads #5 by JJ O'CONNOR, BRIAN BUCCELLATO, RYAN CADY, MIGUEL SEPULVEDA, RAÜL FERNÁNDEZ, HI-FI and DAVE SHARPE has been quite the saga of unlikely heroes rising up against the oppressive military forces with what could possibly be the fate of the universe in the fallout. The book has been an exciting read and we appear to be at its’ conclusion ….or are we? Let’s jump into this final story issue and see whats happening, shall we?

The story has been a wild one to say the least. The unlikely heroes started out as miners working to harvest minerals known as the Pure. Once a member of their team was left to die, the IronClads group revolted back against the military enforcers, resulting in an officer’s death. From this, the groups leader, Peris, is taken into custody while the others plan on fighting back. Lela has stepped up into the leader role and inspires the group that they can rebel. Through grit-testing moments and low level armor, the group has now launched an attack on the Alphan headquarters. The plan has been thrown a wild card as Legionaries make the first move.

All the while, Governor Dohman has taken an interest in Peris, believing he could be the key to unlocking a weapon from a “God Suit” armor., one that could be a game changer. With the attack on the base, Dohman suits up and enters the battle while the citadel is being attacked. During the melee, Lela and the ‘clads sneak in and find Peris. They leave but not empty handed. The group leaves to walk into an escalading war zone. Legionaries vs. Alphan Armorclads vs a falling Armorclad ship…..the stakes have never been higher.

With Dohman surrounded by attacking forces, Peris makes a bold move to help. Was it enough? How does the rest of the team fare against the forces attacking? Will they all make it out alive? Readers can rest assured to get those answers and one more that has been asked around the fandom: Will this tie into anything in the normal Valiant Universe? You’ll need to check this issue out and find out!

The writing team caps off the season finale with a solid issue. O’Connor and Buccellato send the ragtag team of fighters off with closure for this arc. The secret with Peris and connection with the “God Suit” is one fans will be speculating on for a while. It did deliver on why it was so important of a weapon, but its endgame is still one to watch for. This issue showcased Lela’s emergence as leader . Throughout this entire run, Peris and Lela have been the breakout characters from the group. With how this issue ends, it will be interesting to see when the pair returns and what the status quo will be.

Sepulveda does an excellent job closing this series out with a LOT of big action. The battle at the Alphan Citadel is intense and has so many moving parts involved between Legionnaires, Alphans and destruction along the way. The whole issue packs the “big fight feel” to it. Seeing what Peris does with the weapon was impressive and gives some intrigue for what the true story of that weapon is. The art’s strength has been showing that the underdogs can be heroes. This issue takes it up some notches with how they hold their own against enemies who are more powerful and outclass them. Great final panels to close on.

Overall, Armorclads has been a fantastic journey to a new part of the Valiant Universe. The immergence of ultimate underdogs into battle tested warriors will win you over from the opening page. This saga has everything from action to sci-fi themes to overall what it takes to be a hero. The conclusion of this chapter will leave readers very satisifed and waiting with anticipation for their next escapades. Don’t miss this issue at the comic shops this week!

On this edition, we’re taking a look at the return to Comixology Originals (via Best Jackett Press) for the one and only Scott Snyder! Last October, Snyder (along with Greg Capullo, Francis Manupal & Francesco Francavilla kicked off “Scottober”, with such releases as “We Have Demons”, ”Clear” & “Night Of the Ghoul”. All three books are fantastic reads and generated much excitement for comic book fans into checking this line of books out. All three of those series have wrapped (for now) but that wasn’t the end of what Snyder had started with Comixiology.

This week, It’s Scottober 2.0 as Snyder has three NEW books that are perfectly timed to drop for San Diego Comic Con (SDCC). One of those books is Canary #1 by Snyder, Dan Panosian, Richard Starkings and Will Dennis. Let’s check out the latest entry into the Comixology Originals line and see what fans will be buzzing about this weekend at SDCC, shall we?

Canary #1 - On Sale July 19th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This story kicks off in 1891 in Utah. Marshall Holt is investigating a murder of a school teacher. The panels pulls no punches in how violent of a crime this was. After talking with the local sheriff , Holt gets a sense where to go to find the alleged killer: a young boy by the name of Johnny Apple. Holt’s reputation draws a following to join him, but he declines and sets out to find the killer by himself. It’s bold but Holt doesn’t show any sense of worry as he sets out to find the child.

What he stumbles upon appears to have more than he bargained for. Readers will see how this mystery might be connected to something more sinister. How does
”Canary” play a role in this story? Can Holt solve this case? If he can, at what cost? The tension and drama is built so perfectly that after finishing the issue, you know there’s something special happening here.

A Horror Western story? Sign me up! Snyder welcomes readers into a very interesting world. Marshall Holt seems like the stoic lawman of the old west. Once the layers of the issue start peeling, readers see that there might be more going on with him and a past experience that meets the public eye. It’s a great counter balance to his celebrity status as the “dime novel cover model” that people know him as. This point is driven home when he is asked about his mask that he wears. The mood seems dark and when we see a flashback of Holt, it adds a great element to the direction of whats to come. Excellent storytelling.

Panosian crafts a gritty old western town to the letter within these pages. The imagery from the initial murder readers see to the gunfight that happens later captures that energy throughout this issue. How the facial depictions of Holt and Apple’s emotion are done this issue gives more impact to the story. Seeing how the young boy reacts to what’s happening and Holt’s flashback moments to current time, there’s much happening here with both. Can’t wait to see where this story goes next!

Overall, Canary #1 delivers on a debut issue that will have fans talking. Snyder and Panosian present a captivating tale of the old West with a strong horror element added in. Marshall Holt's story is just beginning but the opening chapter is one not to miss adding to your collection. Make plans to pick up a copy on comiXology this week!

On this edition, we’re taking a look at one of the THREE new series coming out on the Comixology Originals line (via Best Jackett Press) written by the one and only Scott Snyder! Last year, Snyder (along with Greg Capullo - “We Have Demons”, Francis Manupal - “Clear”, Francesco Francavilla - “Night Of The Ghoul” & their creative teams) generated such a buzz with these books, October became “Scottober” at New York Comic Con (NYCC). If you were in attendance for NYCC21, you know the hype for these comics was electric & matched with an incredible panel discussing the books which I was in attendance for.

This week, It’s Scottober 2.0 as the new books are perfectly timed to drop for San Diego Comic Con (SDCC). Leading the way is Barnstormers #1 by Snyder, along with Tula Lotay, Dee Cunniffe, Richard Starkings & Will Dennis. Let’s not waste any more time and jump right into the next phase of Scottober on Comixolgy Originals shall we?

Barnstormers #1 - On Sale July 19th

This book is set in 1927 and is centered around a pilot named Hawk E. Baron. Baron has returned from World War 1 and now is paying the bills via barnstorming people in the sky for a small cost. Where this story begins, Baron is not having the best of luck with his line of work. His last few stops haven’t been anything to write home about but he’s told about this place called “Barnville.” There he is told about many people that will be waiting & thinks this will be the place where his luck changes. Upon arrival, his hope looks to be answered correctly. However, like most things too good to be true, it appears Hawk might be in way over his head.

A few hours prior, Hawk is in Whempy, Tennessee. Hawk provides the readers an insight on how the “Barnstorming” hustle works. Hawk runs into an operator girl who he’s trying to convince her to help announce his arrival in the next town. However, something halts that conversation for a bit. When it resumes, the operator agrees to terms but Hawk’s arrival is anything but a warm welcome. A minor mistake has now spiraled into Hawk meeting some of the town’s people in an unwelcome manner. This has now set him on a new adventure with mystery, love and murder creeping around the corner. What does it have to do with a woman by the name of Tillie? You’ll have to pick up the issue and find out!

What an incredible first issue! Barnstormers hits the ground running with hooking readers into Hawk’s problems from an impromptu introduction to some of the Barnville residents. Synder presents the readers with a very flawed character that finds himself in way over his head & basically no time to assess the danger he’s in. This goes into what Tillie brings to the story. Snyder shows a little bit to her character but not enough where readers can make a call on her motives just yet. From the initial panel. Hawk’s seemed like he’s never too sure of what he’s doing and by issue’s end, this is brought right to the forefront. The final narration on the last page drives home that there is so much more to this story & it’s definitely going to hook fans until its conclusion.

Lotay delivers some breathtaking images within this issue. Taking readers back into the 1920’s is made to look easy with the artwork here. The facial expressions from the characters really pop off the pages to add something extra to the story at hand. Look no further than the full page panel of Tillie near the end of the book. It’s absolutely impressive work. Everything about this book has a unique retro feel to it with maybe one exception but it’s a noteworthy moment in the book. It’s still too early to tell what Hawk witnessed in the pausing moment between the operator woman’s conversation but it adds a nice pace-changing visual to what’s being created here. Readers will have much to rave about with the art.

Overall, Barnstormers #1 kicks off a suspenseful thriller which will leave readers guessing at how this story will play out. Snyder brings excellent storytelling to this issue & is matched perfectly by the stunning art style of Lotay. Get on board now at Comixology & do not let this issue pass you by. Excellent read!

However, in one inventor’s case, that always doesn’t guarantee anything. His name is Dudley Datson, a young man who’s life is anything but normal.

Datson is about to have a huge presentation, with his father, who is dealing with some health issues, claiming to in attendance. This is giving our lead much anxiety as you would expect. From here, readers are introduced to other major players in Dudley’s universe. Ohno, his best friend, Dr, Shae and Daedalus, a lovable dog ….. to everyone but Dudley all join the fray as Datson prepares his invention of “Duds” as he refers to them as. “Duds” are L.C.D. integrated fiber clothing (to sum it up quickly). However the presentation doesn’t exactly go according to plan and it makes for quite the awkward moment.

From this fallout becomes another issue that Dudley will not see coming. The misfire of the presentation has now become the least of his problems. Readers will be very invested to see which way the story goes from here. No spoiler talk of what happens for the latter part of this story. All I will say is readers are in for a fun ride and a last panel curve ball they arguably won’t see coming. Get ready!

This book was such a fun read. Snyder brings to life all the anxiety of a young genius that one would expect. Seeing the stumbling in social settings felt natural for a kid feeling the weight of the world on his back. How the story shifts will be an entertaining turn for the young lead. The book might mislead to a degree where readers think its going, but once the new direction of events are established, this is gonna be something to be buzzing about. The supporting cast is one to watch as well. The back and forth between Ohno and Dudley is light hearted and breaks from the more “normal” tone of the book. This world created will lock readers in for the ride after first read. No doubt about that.

Igle’s art is stellar for this issue. From the detail work in the opening pages “History lesson” to the lab where Datson made his invention, the arts is very fine and makes the pages pop off. There’s another scene later where a big surprise is unveiled but Igle’s art needs to be acknowledged for it. The final panel is so well done. The energy of a young man in NYC is brought to life with much to rave about. Tremendous job.

Overall, Dudley Datson & the Forever Machine #1 is a big hit. There’s a lot of elements happening with this story but Snyder, Igle and the rest of the creative team present it with such energy and enjoyment. After that final page, expect to be locked in for the ride cause it’s only going up from here. Make a point to check this out on Comixology this week! Highly recommended!

Power Rangers #21 by Ryan Parrott, Marco Renna, Walter Baiamonte, Sharon Marino, Sara Antonellini and Ed Dukeshire for Boom Studios brings the Omega Rangers into a few situations they were not expecting. Their lives have been turned upside down for various reasons already. This issue amplifies one key storyline that will have huge implications moving forward. Let’s check out the latest chapter in the lives of the Power Rangers, shall we?

This issue kicks off on Safehaven, where Zach and Trini have become the guardians of an alien known as Journey. Jounrey is aging extremely fast as now she is a teenager from where she was just a baby a few issues ago. The “parents” are catching that Keron Vrin, who had a rough introduction to Zach has caught Journey’s eye. While this is happening, evil forces are plotting against the Rangers in the shadows. This is to be expected as the Rangers declared their warning of protection to the universe. Once the rangers are called away, their plan starts to take form.

Meanwhile, the addition of Andros to the team has been one readers have been locked in on. The mysterious ranger has been moving in shadows with an agenda all his own. As the team makes their play on the Astro Mega ship, they’re met with resistance from the Xurix. From this initial battle, the Rangers make progress and so does Andros. What unfolds next with have readers very shocked with a last panel shot that will have the fandom buzzing on socials.

The story of Andros continues to hook readers within these pages. Side note: if you haven’t read Power Rangers Unlimited: “Countdown to Ruin” yet, it would be a good complementary piece to this issue. Parrott brings out the complexity of this character as his actions are completely justified by his means. The slow build on his ultimate motives has been written extremely well. Take nothing away from the rest of the issue, but once that last page hits, readers gt the full gut-punch of everything that’s happened prior. The Zach/Trini/Journey story is a fun break from the seriousness of Andros. Excellent balance.

Renna and the art team deliver another solid issue. The fight scenes with the Rangers and Xurix pop off the pages. They have a lot of high energy and big action to them. Without giving anything away, the latter section of the book is where these panels shine. Readers are in for something special with them. On the other side, the young love story with Journey and Kevor adds some light-hearten visuals to the book. The reactions to Kevor giving his advice to Journey about “what’s better” is a quiet yet perfectly placed moment in their story. Heading towards #100, Power Rangers is really picking up steam.

Overall, Power Rangers #21 is one not to miss at the LCS this week. With only a few issues left until Legacy #100, Parrott, Renna and the team are turning up the drama a few notches & giving the fans some moments that scream nothing but excitement heading into their finale. Don’t just take my word for it. Grab a copy this week and see how the team is steering this story in the right direction.

“What a long strange trip it’s been….” thus far. The duo has been on a quest of epic stakes as Armstrong, the long thought immortal appears to have lost his gift. Archer, his peaceful walking weapon best friend, has not given up hope on saving his friend. The past two issues have taken us to far places within the Valiant Universe but with no success. That is until the “Hail Mary” plan is set: rumors of “Golden Apples” in Norway that might hold the key. However, the Essentric has sent the Maw to recover Armstrong for his collection.

The pair has their hands tied up first with the guard of the apples: FRIG. She is not willing to give up those apples without a fight. The pair is outmatched and when Frig throws Archer down a pit, the story shifts from Norway….to the Faraway! Once there, the pair pleads their case to Frig, who gives her story to them in exchance, there appears to be a truce to try finding a way back. A portal opens but no good plan ever works in their favor. The Maw has tracked them down. Readers get a full glimpse of what Maw is all about. How does the now trio fare? Will they get home? Does the Essentric win? Readers need to check this issue out to get those answers and then some!

This book is so damn entertaining. Foxe writes well placed humor throughout this comic. The unlikely pair’s personalities shine thru yet again. The story is over the top fun and carries that energy throughouthe book. Even when they face off against Maw, it never looses that cool “odd Couple” vibe which makes this book great. Frig will be a fan favorite when it’s all said and done. She fits in perfectly with the pair. Hopefully this isn’t the last story we see her in. Readers have a lot to enjoy with the writing here.

On the art side, Fiorito takes readers on a great trio with this issue. From the fight with Frig to the wee spent in the Faraway, each moment feels different and pushes the story along at a great pace. the little moments of humor drawn in works well . Frig’s origin panels are prime example of that. No spoilers here, but I did have a good laugh seeing some “visitors” on one in particular. Maw’s appearance shifted the tone of the book and rightfully so. I’m very curious to see how that part of the story plays out.

Overall, if you’re looking for excellent storytelling and visuals with a dash of humor and adventure, Archer and Armstrong Forever is your book. The creative team continues with another great issue of the strong return for Valiant’s odd couple. Make sure to grab a copy when you hit the LCS this week.

For this edition, we’re checking out a brand new series on the Comixology Originals line at some fans might already know the main character, who has starred in her own series of novels. Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #1 by Stephanie Phillips, Valeria Favoccia, Ellie Wright, Sheelagh D, and Saida Temofonte bring Beatrix Rose, the popular character from the Mark Dawson books to the comic world in a big way! Let’s check out the explosive first issue, shall we?

Beatrix Rose: Vigilante #1 - On sale July 12th

The background of Rose is that she worked for 15, a British Intelligence Group until she was betrayed by her team. She disappeared after that until her re-appearance. The issue starts off in 2006 Hong Kong, where someone is disposing of a corrupt businessman and his associates. There are no punches pulled as our narrator who’s disposing of these people is none other than Beatrix Rose. Rose gives the readers a quick run down of events: Husband has been murdered. Her Daughter - kidnapped. She’s on her own and moving in the shadows, working for the Triad. Being the gun-for-hire wasn’t exactly the plan but a bad direction is better than no direction.

When Rose has been given her next assignment, she brings work on tracking down “Yaomo” or “Demon”, whos been assassinating Triad members. Readers get a glimpse into how Rose goes about preparing for these missions with great narration as a backdrop. From here, Rose goes to work and comes face to face with her intended target. Once there’s a meeting of these two forces, Rose now comes to the realization this mission won’t be as easy as she might have thought.

There couldn’t be a better writer selected for this than Stephanie Phillips. If you haven’t checked her work out on We Only Kill Each Other , the amazing Grim from Boom Studios or a little book called Harley Quinn over at DC Comics just to name a few, Phillips is crushing it right now. Bringing Rose to the comic world after having the established book audience is tricky to pull off. Phillips gives her a strong introduction from her first assignment we see. The narration is perfect for new readers to the character (like myself) which gives enough, but not everything away about Rose’s past. The fight scenes are laid out exceptionally well, much due to Phillips’ background as a Maui Thai fighter (source: Beatrix Rose press release). The pace never slows down but it doesn’t have to here. Rose in action is the story and it’s one that locks you in from the jump.

Favoccia does a fantastic job bringing the Hong Kong Underworld to life through Rose’s actions. The fights feel very intense and captures the readers attention without letting go. The first encounter with Yaomo and Rose is excellent. It’s arguably the strongest visual moments of this issue after the intro pages. Seeing what a force she is, Rose instantaneously connects with the readers. The world of espionage mixed with underground looks like this will be a fun ride to jump on board with.

Overall, This new world of Beatrix Rose shows promise and excitement with its first issue. Incredible storytelling and art set the stage for what looks to be a non-stop thrill ride with intrigue thrown in the mix. Make sure you check this out on Comixology this week. It’s one that doesn’t miss its mark.

Cold Iron #3 by Andy Diggle, Nick Brokenshire, Triona Farrell, Simon Bowland and Tom Muller has been an imaginative tale starring Kay Farragher as the reluctant heroine thrown into an orphaned girl’s life and the trouble that seems to be following them. Let’s check out where the mid-way issue of this series takes this pair now, shall we?

Cold Iron #3 - On Sale July 12th

Kay Farragher’s life has literally been turned upside down since crossing paths with a mysterious girl named Mona. From mythical creatures hunting them to shady businessmen trying to get involved with ulterior moments, their days haven’t been easy. This issue picks up where the pair has ran back to Kay’s grandmother’s cottage for shelter. Granny is providing some wisdom (plus a cool “Evil Dead” nod) until they’re paid a visit by William Quilliam, who’s working an angle with those creatures hunting the pair. Once he’s pushed away, the pace really picks up.

Kay is confronted by an unexpected visitor. All the while, a drastic event happens where Kay is separated from Granny and Mona. From that fallout, an alliance appears to be slowly breaking. How will that play into Kay’s favor? Can she reconnect with Granny and Mona? Readers will have those answers and a wild ending to take us closer to the conclusion of this story.

Diggle continues to elevate the stakes with this issue. Kay’s story has only a few slow moments but the story speeds up tremendously. Without spoiling anything, there are big moments in this issue that become game changers for this story. Kay’s reaction to the unknown environment she’s in has played out perfectly as expected. Kay goes thru many emotions trying to wrap her head around what’s happening. It’s a mix of panic and excitement but all translates very well on these pages.

Brokenshire continues the solid work on this book. Deal with some of the creatures in this story, the book has a big supernatural feel to it. The latter half of this issue is prime example of this. The facial expressions of both Kay and William drive home so much of the story. Kay’s “against all odds” attitude is shining on these pages. Heading into the final chapters, this should be an epic conclusion for fans.

Overall, Cold Iron #3 continues to push forward with its character driven story. Kay’s desperate attempts to survive the new world she’s been brought into has been an enjoyable read each month. Diggle and Brokenshire have something very unique going on within these pages. Make sure to check this out on Comixology this week when you’re checking out their NCBD.

Once And Future #27 by Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamara Bonvillain, & Ed Dukeshire for Boom Studios progresses on with its’ fantastic tale. Each issue, there’s something new and unique that makes this a must-read each time out. Let’s take a dive into the latest epic adventures of Bridgette, Duncan and Rose, shall we?

Once And Future #27

This issue opens up at Grail Castle where Elaine, Bridgette’s daughter has taken up residency. She is on a mission to save Galahad, her “son”. He is a mix of a half zombie and half mantaur but Elaine is pushing to save him by any means she can. Meanwhile, It’s Christmas Eve and everyone is making a play for the sword in the stone. Yes, that is correct, the legendary sword of Excalibur is in play for the one who should be King. Remember how I said this book is one of the most imaginative at the LCS? Need I say more.

Bridgette makes the plan on what to do: take out anyone trying to make a claim. She gets some unlikely help and readers are treated to an all out battle for the sword. It’s exciting action from the first panel! The resolution from that is big and fits into the outstanding character work from this book. The story of Galahad this issue also takes a few turns and readers are left with a final page that will really catch some attention.

Gillen creates a very solid issue within these pages. The Galahad story is one that gets broken up but has an ending that fits perfectly to where the characters connected are. Bridgette McGuire is one of the best characters in comics. Her personality throughout every adventure is always stealing the panel. How she prepares for the battle at Hyde Park will hook readers and add some excitement to the story at hand. The ending of this issue will hit some emotional marks and closes the book out strong.

Is there a better artist in comics right now than Dan Mora? Consistently, every issue he draws is energetic and always presents moments larger than life. The entire battle of Hype Park is prime example. The action is HUGE. They jump off the page. Not to be outdone, the Galahad ending proves not everything needs a huge panel. The quiet moments there hit with readers with an emotional combo. There are few books on the market as Once & Future for its creative quality.

Overall, Once and Future #27 continues to prove why its’ one of the best reads at the LCS. Great storytelling and fantastic art make this book a must have every time out. Keep your eyes peeled on NCBD at the local comic shops and don’t miss this issue!

Mighty Morphin #21 by Mat Groom, Moises Hidalgo, Raul Angulo and Ed Dukeshire gear up the team for their next adventure, with all roads leading to the legacy number #100 in September. Let’s check out where Angel Grove’s finest are up to now, shall we?

The team is back on Earth after”acquiring” a new command center as the old one was destroyed during the Eltarian War. With the team being in space, they returned to find out Jason’s mother had passed away. This has been an emotional story going on between both books (highly recommend Power Rangers #20). This issue focuses heavily on Kimberly/ As she goes to check on Jason, readers are seeing Jason deal with the loss of his mother . From here, Kimberly has some catch-up time with Trini, who’s on Earth with the rest of the Omega Rangers. This is a fun sequence seeing the two friends catch up on events going on, primarily Trimi breaking down events to Kimberly. It’s almost a great intro page for new readers who get the bullet points of some of the Omega Rangers adventures.

The conversation does carry a big impact on Kimberly, as she brings up points to both Tommy and Billy. Being a Power Ranger and the responsibilities along with the legacy is driving Kimberly’s motives this issue. The results lead a pair of rangers into a situation unplanned for. What will be the outcome of cementing the legacy? Readers will have to check this issue out and see for themselves.

Groom shows off some great character moments involving Kimberly and some of her fellow rangers. The conversation with Trini bring up a few points that have quietly been looming with Kimberly. Factor in the impact of Jason losing his mother and it pushes Kimberly to question where she (and the rest of the Rangers) go from here. The outcome makes sense as with trying to move forward is never an easy road. The ending of this issue will have reader’s attention and how this plays out should make for a fun story.

Hidalgo’s depiction of Kimberly’ conversation with Trini hits the marks for this issue. often, readers can forget that these young heroes are still young and have lives outside of fighting the forces of evil. The Mall sequence of events really gave this issue some light-hearted moments while also building up for the more serious nature of the issue’s final moments. Action sequences worked where they were placed in the story. Very interesting final page to close the book out on.

Overall, Mighty Morphin’ #21 continue the Charge to 100 with a very heavy character driven issue. Groom and Hidalgo present the struggles of Kimberly and where she progresses from her makes for the beginnings of another entertaining story in the Power Rangers Universe. Keep an eye out for this book at the LCS this week.
