Side note: Nobody does a recap page like Valiant Entertainment. Huge fan of their quick recaps.

Last Issue, Armstrong suffered an injury from an attack that our favorite immortal wasn’t healing from. Seeing that this might be the end of the road, Archer, the skilled peaceful weapon who is Armstrong’s best friend, is desperately trying to solve this mystery. Archer has made a list of possible resources to find Armstrong immorality. Their first outing goes as well….as you would think. The rest of the issue keeps the pair on saga after saga checking off the list.

Will the pair find success? That’s the question being asked. There’s also forces working against them (per last issue) that are following them along the way. How does this factor into Archer’s plans? Can Armstrong survive with what his bestie has planned? It’s such a fun read that trust me, breaking it down any further would take away all the excitement.

What an absolutely fun issue. Foxe delivers on bringing the laughs and action within this issue. Being the optimist, Archer trying to save his friend at all costs. His upbeat demeanor is only matched by Armstrong’s “whatever’ attitude. It’s a great blend of personalities that gives this book such good moments. The moments on Archer’s list are entertaining to say the least. It is never a dull moment with this pair. Readers will have much to enjoy within these pages.

Fiorito does a great job making each stop on Archer’s list stand out and feel different. The Australia stop had me actually laugh out loud when I read the panel. Another solid showing of Archer’s fighting skills in this issue as well. It’s a nice touch when the description is added to explain what he’s doing when it’s a noteworthy move/strike. Armstrong’s reactions to this chase is another strong point of the issue. Nice set-up for next issue with the final panel shot.

Overall, Valiant’s best friends continue their return with an exciting adventure that locks in readers from the opening page. Foxe plays up to the pair’s “odd couple” strengths with the writing while Fiorito creates some memorable moments while equalizing the funny and the fighting. There is no reason this book shouldn’t be in your pull list each month. None. Make sure to get your copy at the local comic shops this week.

The story of Leco, Lis and Lu has escalated rather quickly. After coming into contact with Noronha, a corrupt policeman and a phone filled with information to influence an upcoming election , the trio is now on the radar of Zé Fofinho. Zé Fofinho’s mission is simple: clean up the mess left when Noronha’s phone was compromised. While being on the run, The trio are sending warning messages to Neto, a candidate who opposes the current regime. Information is power and those who have it will try to keep it at all costs.

Last issue, Zé Fofinho kidnapped Leco. This issue, readers jump into see him being tortured by Zé Fofinho, with hopes of getting information on the phones whereabouts. As for the phone, Lis and Lu are trying to get it into hands that will spread the message to the masses. Once they try telling Leco of the news, the pair find out he’s in the hands of Zé Fofinho and an ultimatum is given. How does the trio get out of this situation? Is all their work for nothing? Readers will have that answered plus are left with a final panel that will keep them excited until the final issue drops.

Very solid issue leading into the finale. Scavone really starts to let loose on what Zé Fofinho is capable of. The tension of the situation is built up perfectly as the Zé Fofinho ultimatum is set and the resolution is equally as matched. The series showcases the main friends as risk takers for the right cause. This issue really drives that point home. How they “fight” back against Zé Fofinho during this series has always been creative and this issue has a cool sequence with a few subtle moves that pay off big. Going into the final issue, Scavone has everything all coming together in a way that readers should be very pleased with.

Cruz’s art brought out the best of Zé Fofinho. The torture/interrogation panels are presented bluntly and paint the picture to readers of how ruthless he can be. The use of the red colors during these panels worked well. This is balanced out by the street portion of the story. Action moments pop when they need to for escalating the story. The final panels fit well to close the previous chapters out before heading into what should be an epic conclusion.

Overall, Red Tag #4 keeps the story of fighting corrupt politics moving in the right direction before it concludes this chapter. Scavone and Cruz bring a balanced pace to this issue with Zé Fofinho making moves while being met with counters by Leco, Lis and Lu along the way. Make sure to check this issue out before the conclusion drops next month by heading over to Comixology and checking it out asap!

The story centers around Mindy and her lover Lulu. They (along with Tommy, Flavia, Chris, Oliver and Don) become involved into a club scene that has MUCH going on that isn’t all that it seems. What begins as a simple night at the club switches gears quickly into a cult sacrifice for Dionysus, the Greek God of ecstasy. Kate Park serves as the “avatar” leading people into a blood drinking frenzy that starts escalating out of control. The reason: “The Never Ending Party”. However, things don’t end well as Lulu falls to the party.

Twenty Five years later and Mindy is left moving on from the events at the Arcane Club. Kate makes her best play to bring Mindy back to the fold but things spiral into different directions. Walking away from that encounter, Mindy has a lot to process. Now back home with Flavia, Kate’s world is once again turned upside down with a moment that will have readers guessing until the next issue.

The book has a very unique vibe to it. Doom Patrol fans will recognize and be amped up for Pollack’s name in the credits. The writing is very solid in setting up this very wild world. Mindy’s story is different than most in the sense of mixing Greek gods with a club scene that is anything but conventional. The fallout from a fateful night 25 years ago seems to raise many questions that readers will be interested in seeing how its played out.

The art is solid setting up the dark events of the club. Cabrera doesn’t pull any punches when depicting what is going on in the name of Dionysus. Some panels are very strong in sending the message of what people are willing to do for the “party that never ends”. Capturing Mindy’s reactions to the fast-spinning moments of the ritual will only add to the reveals in present time. Very intriguing final panel to close the book out on.

THE BOYS (SEASON 3 - AMAZON STUDIOS/PRIME VIDEO)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. However for this edition, we’re reviewing a TV series based off an incredible comic series from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The Boys from Amazon Studios returns to Prime Video with the first 3 episode debuting on June 3rd. I was fortunate to be allowed an early screening of the new season so here are my SPOILER FREE takes from the Boys season 3

The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd)

Photo Courtesy of Prime Video ( Amazon Studios )

In case you’re new to this franchise, “The Boys” takes a different look at superheroes than you normally see. “The Seven” are the world’s greatest heroes sponsored by Vought, a corporation that isn’t anything that it seems. Think “Justice League” meets “Youngblood” from Rob Liefeld’s debut book for Image Comics in the 90’s. These “heroes” live and die by public image and popularity ratings. Vought goes to immense measures to cover up their power abuses and trust me, over 2 seasons, there has been plenty.

The Seven started the series with a lineup comprised of Homelander (played by Antony Starr), Starlight (Erin Moriarty), Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott ), Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell), A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), The Deep (Chace Crawford) & Translucent.

Almost a mirror image of the DC Comics’ iconic Justice League Original 7 Lineup:

Homelander = Superman

Black Noir = Batman

Queen Maeve = Wonder Woman

A-Train = The Flash

The Deep = Aquaman

Translucent = Martian Manhunter

Starlight = Green Lantern

but these individuals are VASTLY different than the DC counterparts.

Opposing all that they are is “The Boys”, led by Karl Urban - Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid), Mother's Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capone) & Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara). This group has one simple mission: take down the Seven and Vought at any costs.

Homelander (Antony Starr)

The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd)

Photo Courtesy of Prime Video ( Amazon Studios )

During this ongoing struggle, viewers have seen members of the Seven killed, disgraced and replaced after being ousted. Some were more morally challenged (Looking at you Stormfront ) and ultimately defeated! Viewers have also seen Butcher and Hughie pushed and forced to grow together whether they were ready or not. Factor in the Romeo & Juliet style romance between Starlight and Hughie and this show has won fans over with its’ over the top moments balanced out with brilliant character building that challenge what we know of “super heroes”.

Season 3 picks up a year later from the events of Season 2. The Boys have now gone legit as they now work for a government agency. Instead of Butcher calling the shots, they now have to answer to Hughie who oversees the group for the agency. On the other side of the fight, Homelander is dealing with his public embarrassment being connected to the defeated Stormfront and what she truly was. With public opinion weighing so much, the cracks of Homelander’s psyche appear to show through more and more. The ceasefire that has been establish since the fallout of season 2 slowly starts to fade away as old habits die hard between the hated enemies.

Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd) Photo Courtesy of Prime Video ( Amazon Studios )

Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles)

The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd)

Photo Courtesy of Prime Video ( Amazon Studios )

The big X-Factor in their latest conflict is Butcher has now acquired something that grants powers for 24hrs. Where the group’s whole identity has been based around taking the Supes down since power in the wrong hands is dangerous has now been thrown right back in their faces. What is Butcher going to do with “an even playing field” as he said for the first time during this ordeal. However, that’s not the only new element thrown into this highly combustible mix.

Season 3 also leads to an addition to this world of heroes: Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles). Soldier Boy was the first superhero whose legacy is legendary. The easiest comparison is Marvel Comics’ Captain America, but this isn’t your normal leader of the Avengers. When one of history’s most legendary “good guys” returns to the world, how will he fare in this battle? The stakes have never been as high as they are this season. Can Butcher finally defeat Homelander or will the flagship member of the Seven continue to be the thorn in the sides of both the Seven and The Boys?

Starlight (Erin Moriarty) The Boys Season 3 (debuting June 3rd) Photo Courtesy of Prime Video ( Amazon Studios )

Being a Spoiler free review, trust me when I say that this season lives up to the standards set forth by the previous seasons. The moral questions of Super Heroes doesn’t stray but evolves within these eight episodes. For being a short season in comparison to other shows, “The Boys” waste no time getting into a rhythm with very little cases of “filler” scenes. This is largely due to the fantastic acting on the show.

Antony Starr deserves to be in all award contention for his portrayal this season. Starr brought out the truly broken character of Homelander. While last season focused more on him trying to balance connecting to his son and being manipulated by Stormfront, Starr really sinks his teeth into showcasing the fall from grace from America’s “favorite” superhero after being publicly disgraced. How does someone, let alone one with his powers, come back to win a public over that has clearly left him broken? Viewers will be locked into each episode to witness how this all unfolds.

Not to be outdone, Moriarty steals scenes battling Homelander’s antagonizing of her character. There’s also some great moments with Jack Quaid showing the struggle of trying to have a relationship with someone NOT a Supe and how that affects their lives. Moriarty & Quaid have fantastic chemistry on screen and gives a small sense of realism to this wild world they live in. Extravagant might be the perfect word to describe this world because there are moments that will leave viewers speechless and one episode in particular which pays homage to one of the most notorious stories in the Boys comics.

Ackles also shines thru this season as the hero the world “thinks” they know. His mannerisms match what you would expect from someone of Soldier Boy’s background in this story. His portrayal felt fresh and will standout on its own. There are differences between Solider Boy & Captain America and that’s not a bad thing. Viewers will definitely know the difference between the two as the season goes on. Ackles was a superb addition to an already stacked cast of talented actors.

The writing is as sharp and poignant as ever. Showrunner Eric Kripke and the rest of the executive producers (Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, along with comic creators Garth Ennis & Darick Robertson to name a few) make this show still engaging within a pop culture audience that gets over-exposed to the superhero world quite often. Everything about this show hits all the checkmarks for what you want to stand out with a story like this. It’s not for everyone but then again, the world of superheroes isn’t always good vs. evil all the time either.

Overall, The Boys delivers another incredible season. The outstanding performances from Antony Starr and Moriarty will get rightful praise but the rest of the cast stepped up to match them throughout this run. There is much to enjoy in this world of supes vs. everyone. Don’t miss it when it debuts on Prime Video on June 3rd with the first 3 episodes, then weekly after that.

Hit me up on Twitter and let me know what you think of The Boys season 3. Special thanks to Amazon Studio and Prime Video for allowing the ODPH early screener access. Thanks for reading.

CLEAR #6 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS/BEST JACKETT PRESS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast! On this edition, we’re concluding a fantastic story from the Comixology Originals banner via Best Jackett Press. Clear #6 by Scott Snyder, Francis Manapul & Andworld Design has been nothing short of a pure adrenaline filled thriller that hasn’t let readers go since the beginning panels of this story. The futuristic world of Detective Sam Dunes has unveiled (pun intended) readers to a very captivating thought of what technology can really do to reality as we know it. How does it all end? *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue kicks off with Detective Dunes making his way to the New Golden Gate, a massive Veil production plant. In 2052, Veils allow users to re-create their reality in the vision of whatever they think of. The mystery of veils connects with the death of his love Kendra which has started him on this adventure to begin with. After learning the truth about Veils from the Widow last issue, Dunes is now committed to end it all once and for all. He’s not alone in this latest move. Petal Madders, the client who hired him to investigate her husband is along for the ride.

As with all good intentions, nothing goes as planned here as instantly, an action is made that lights the match on this powder keg moment. What transpires after is a rollercoaster ride of reveals & scenarios that will have readers completely caught off guard and fully invested. Ultimately, the story concludes in a way that only it can. There’s a wide variety of emotions that readers will have right up to the final panel. It’s a fitting end for a character’s journey who’s struggled to find out what is real and what’s behind a veil.

WHAT A FANTASTIC CONCLUSION! Snyder brings this story to an epic finish that really brings everything back to square one. Dunes’ investigation has lead him to dig deeper to see things more “clear.” As we have witnessed reading this series, Snyder has challenged the reader in seeing the problem isn’t so much the antagonist challenging Dunes, but is it technology and what it can do. Our main character is flawed but sticks to his instincts for better or for worse. In this final issue, readers get to see how this all plays out for Dunes and what cost. There’s much to be contemplating about after the final page. Excellent work.

The world of 2052 is brought to so much life by Manapul’s artwork. From the opening page of this issue, the emotions are set as readers see Dunes and Petal driving into New Golden Gate. The art pops off the pages esp. during a 2 page spread featured later in the book (not featured here) and when Dunes and Petal make their way up the building elevator. Adding in so many different elements to this new landscape really brought out the most of this story. From seeing views through other’s eyes really tied thoughts back to the original question theme posed here about technology. There are some great action and character sequences during this issue but nothing stands out more than the final page of this book. It’s those closing images that put the perfect exclamation point on this incredible read.

Overall, Clear #6 brings a strong ending to readers who will have much to savor in re-reading this. On Otherworld, Bridgette, Duncan and Rose attempt to make their way back to Sherwood Forrest after recently recruiting the one and only Robin Hood in their fight. Meanwhile at the Grail Castle, Bridgette’s daughter Elaine starts making her own moves. One that will cause some waves is the recruitment of Lancelot & his mission.

However, there is no time to focus there as readers are fast forwarded to Christmas time. “Otherworld is a magical place” to paraphrase Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. There might not be a better written character in comics than Bridgette McGuire. Gillen continues to add layers to her character and the overall direction of this story. For the reveal of her plan, it’s delivered in such a fun way that any other character was talking it, it would appear flat. The “Christmas” break is a great pause to the story that connects with the audience. Readers are so used to the fast pace then when it’s slowed down, it delivers on reminding that our heroes are human at the end of the day.

When top artists in comics today are talked about, Dan Mora’s name had better be in the conversation. Balancing the ever-changing world in which this story is set, Mora’s art gives such energy to this book. From the action sequences to the subtle moments with Duncan and Rose having a quiet pause, each detail shown elevates the incredible writing. Factor in Bridgette’s mannerisms and you have a can’t miss issue each month, let alone this issue.

Tynion continues to make something special happen within these pages. Erica’s conversation with Big Gary was a nice interaction to show some emotion behind Erica. Life after the Order is not exactly a runaway smash, yet the writing here keeps you locked in seeing Erica’s struggles first hand. Erica “working” with Sheriff Thomas as a solid compliment as well. The issue caps off with a closing section involving the House of Cutter. Within those few moments (matched up with last issue) and readers can’t help but be excited to see what happens when this House eventually finds Erica.

Dell’edera & Muerto continue to impress with the art duties here. From showing off the frustration in Erica to Gabi’s strong front of being calm with a monster on the loose, the art team does some fantastic work with the emotions being told. Readers can easily see how both characters are feeling the weight of the stories they’re in. This factors in heavily when you see the talk between both houses looking for Erica. There’s always a unqiue feel to this book and keeps readers on edge of what’s coming.

Overall, the latest chapter of Erica Slaughter continues to gain some steam while keeping readers guessing at what’s next. The book is known for its wonderful storytelling and art and for good reason. The story doesn’t pack a lot (if any) action in it but readers will definitely feel the emotions of the scenes they’re reading within these pages. Make sure to snag a copy next time you hit the LCS up!

Andelfinger caps off he series with a very satisfying ending. This issue didn’t have the heavy emotional kick of last issue, but it wasn’t necessary here. At his moment, all the young heroes knew the gravity of the situation. Every moment was high emotion. Orisonth and Aleia had standout moments as well with the decisions made this issue. Readers witnessed the huge ramifications of the play made to stop the Spector and were treated to a final moment that they will be talking about happily.

Ragazzoni delivers on big action to close this story out properly. The build-up was set as they take the attack to the Dark Specter. The panels had high energy to them ad were capped off by a fantastic “It’s Morphin Time” 2 page spread that will please many readers. There was some great “quieter” moments mixed in, especially with Orisonth and Aleia . The fallout sequences were engaging to assist in letting the next moves for this team forward from the battle. Absolutely marked out at the last panel. Readers will be extremely pleased with who or what appears at the end.

Since his re-emergence, Peter Stanchek has been the center of a LOT of attention. Waking up with no memory and trying to stay alive, Peter connects with Cici and Young Ago, fellow Psiots that are standing up to authorities trying to hold back the people. With a new found sense of purpose, Stanchek now uses his powers to be a symbol off hope. However, there is a force at play that don’t want to see him succeed. That force is The Renegade, who as we’ve found out thru this series is the “evil” side of Stanchek. This goes to show a fraction at how powerful the Harbinger is: He literally rewired his own brain! Unfortunately, this corrupt version of the Harbinger doesn’t want peace and hope .He wants to watch the world burn.

With Stanchek’s return, readers did also see a return of a fan favorite of the Valiant Universe: Faith aka Zephyr. With their past, it was only a matter of time until she confronted her old “friend”. As Faith enters the fray, the Renegade makes his moves well known. The Renegade starts activating Psiots and preying on their pain and fears. While trying to stop the Renegade, our hero is shot IN THE HEAD by the assassin Blam. This isn’t a bait and switch moment. Peter’s brains are literally leaking all over the street! After some “motivation” from Ago while unconscious, Peter literally heals his own head wound?! Regrouped and refocused (with CiCi now activated in her powers), The Harbinger leads his team against the Renegade and his army of corrupt Psiots with the fate of Psiot City in the balance.

Starting this issue off is our hero leading his team directly into battle. Readers get a glimpse of a solid showcase of what this “team” can do. There is also an interaction between Faith and Blam that leaves a thought of more interactions between them are coming. However, fans see the battle that they’ve been waiting for. It delivers on tying everything back to where we started this series: “Who Is Peter Stanchek”? The conclusion is a fitting one and leaves some questions on can Peter “Be Better”?

Kelly & Lanzing close out this adventure on a very strong note with leaving more questions on the future of the Harbinger. Their run has been based on the theory of can Peter “Be Better”? From where readers witnessed his start to now, the answer is a resounding YES. This latest story has been one of redemption at the cost of fixing his broken soul. Their creative way of demonstrating Stanchek’s powers is one that I will personally miss from this book. The conclusion of the final battle almost felt anti-climactic until you go back and see what the meaning behind it was. To be better, Peter has to forgive himself and give himself another chance. It’s creative and left some doors open on the eventual return.

As for the art, Rodriguez goes back to the strong mental imagery of issue #1 and shows readers that the true battle was never of physical power, but that of mental will. There is an excellent back-to-back 2 page spreads where Peter falls into water that explains this perfectly. The moments feel big between these two. The ending visual of the battle resonates to the rest of the characters of the book. It l leave readers with a varying opinion as previously mentioned until they really break down what happened in this conclusion. The final panel shot is a very fitting one to cap this current volume off on.

Overall, The Harbinger #8 closes the latest saga of Peter Stanchek off with strong writing & amazing artwork. The creative team of Kelly, Lanzing & Rodrigeuz crafted a compelling tale of self discovery and self-closure all while balancing the unpredictable world of one of Valiant’s most powerful beings all the while. Personally when (and I can’t stress “when” instead of “if” enough, especially with a movie in development. ) we see the Harbinger return, the same creative team is back on the book. Their energy to the character was a fresh & welcomed take.

The answer of “Who Is Peter Stanchek” is answered while seeing a new status quo established for Psiot City when readers will see him next. Make a point to get to your local comic shop and get caught up on this latest adventure.

This issue opens up with Trini and Zach being make shift parents after taking care of their mysterious alien discovered on the last mission. That alien is aging rather rapidly but that doesn’t stop our rangers from still trying to take care of the young child. It’s a fun sequence of events that shows a different side to the Rangers. Suffice to say, Safehaven’s newest resident is winning everyone over.

Meanwhile Jason and Yale are thrown into uncharted territory on Planet KO-35. The pair ran into Andros, a ranger with his own mysterious past last issue. Andros drops some information on the pair that gives off a certain vibe of not everything is what it seems with this ranger. With lives on the line, this trio makes their move but does Andros have other motives at play? Plus, there is a final page that will leave readers in a very heartbroken place heading towards next issue.

Talk about a mic-drop moment to end the issue on. Parrott writes an emotional punch to the reader that caps off a very solid issue. The Trini/Zach babysitting story was a fun break in the action of the Omega Rangers’ new status quo. It gave a good balance to the more serious nature of Jason and Yale’s story with Andros. Considering the namedrop done by the mysterious stranger, Andros’s story should be one to watch. Expecting big things happening there.

Renna delivers another great issue on art duties. Fun opening full page to open the issue on. The moments that jump off the page are the ones involved in the rescue mission. Andros’ facial expressions told a definite story that will only grow from here moving forward. Excellent final panel with the emotional closing moment of this issue as well.

For this arc, readers are getting a spotlight on the Scarlet Masks of the Order of St. George. They are more known for being the book keepers of the Order in comparison to the white masks synonymous with the hunters. This issue kicks off with a nine year old girl’s body washing up to shore at a campsite off Lake Michigan. When the body is discovered by campers, the victim is missing their eyes. News of this incident travels back to the Order.

The spotlight is thrown on Edwin Slaughter, a scarlet mask who’s dreams of being a hunter but is relegated to only record their adventures. This all changes when he is selected to serve as reconnaissance for the incident at the camp. As he is debriefed , this incident at the camp isn’t as isolated as it might appear. When he arrives at the campsite, readers get a peek into seeing why Edwin was selected for this mission. What does he find out? Is there more to this campsite than meets the eye? Excellent way to kick this new story off. The dynamic of Edwin Slaughter is fascinating to read about. Edwin doesn’t appear to be the right person for this assignment at first but Tynion and Johns gives a very unique explanation to sell the point home using “Bears”. His perception of the world makes this story stand-out. The interaction he has with the camper further drives that point. The rest of the issue gives that slow build you expect from this series and will have readers locked in to the unfolding story.

Cadonici makes a big impression with this issue as well. From the moment the body washes up to shore and the campers reaction, the mood is set for this issue and doesn’t let up. Visualizing the “Bears” story was another standout moment in this book as well. The panel set-up with Edwin looking a the camper was a great presentation to show how Edwin broke down what he was seeing. The imagery doesn’t disappoint and leaves with a great final full page panel.

Let’s not waste any more time and get savage with this deep dive, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue starts out with a mysterious stranger hiding in the background of New York City. Invisible to all, the figure moves forward looking for their target. Readers don’t wait too long to find out who this character is and who they’re after. While tearing thru a snake worshiping cult, Conan The Barbarian is confronted by none other than DEATHLOK, who’s looking to punish the Cimmerian for assaults on the time-stream. This meeting goes exactly as you would envision it ( and I wouldn’t have settled for anything less!).

The Cult that Conan was tracking down has also drawn the attention of Anti-Venom (Flash Thompson) Daredevil (Elektra). They were investigating a deadly thief in an Alchemax Lab. Weapon H have a run-in that is anything but cordial with Black Knight (Dane Whitman). In arguably the most “calm” moment in the book is the interaction with Cloak & Dagger. All these characters have their own issues going on during this time but are all drawn together during an event that shakes up them to their core! What happens next truly lives up to the name “SAVAGE”! Once all the players join the fray backing up Conan against Deathlok, the throwdown is one for the ages. The resolution though….no one could predict what happens next. The final page will have readers fired up to see where the saga goes from here!

CREATIVE BREAKDOWN

IN PEPOSE WE TRUST! Obviously if you know his previous works (and you should!), “Savage Avengers” couldn’t be in better hands. This lineup of characters is going to be very fun to read their adventures each month. BTW, What a way to open the series! From the minute Conan came barging in on the cult, the tempo for the book was set. The weapon of choice that the cult acquired is one most fans wouldn’t think of on the spot, but once I saw what it was, I marked out! Whenever I see that weapon, I immediately see that Kirby Cap cover pop up. The story involving the other characters prior to “the event” was a perfect change of pace moment. This worked extremely well with Cloak and Dagger, who seem to be the wildcards of this group. In comparison to the other members, they don’t appear to be that “savage” but I have no doubt Pepose has big things planned for the fan favorite duo. Don’t let those character moments fool you. When it came time for the action, Pepose crafted some amazing action moments that delivered for the fans. Excellent final set-up of the story to close out.

Magno really brought those action panels to life and then some with this book! Conan vs. Deathlok had that “big fight feel” that readers would expect. There were no shortages on how vicious this fight was. Mix in when the rest of the team crashes the party and you’ve got a non-stop adrenaline ride in the MCU. Those fight scenes will have fans talking for all the right reasons. Battles are brutal and define what this book should be about. Great full page shot of the team during the “I Bring You Madness” moment. The Artwork is very strong throughout this issue and I can’t wait to see what visuals are coming for the next issue’s adventures. .

FINAL CALL

Overall, Savage Avengers #1 gives readers a relentless, action packed debut that is an absolute can’t -miss addition to your pull list. Superb writing and phenomenal art ushers in this new team to the LCS. Don’t think this is “just another Avengers” book. The creative team waste no time in presenting a group of Avengers you can’t help but follow along on their stories. Make a point to get on-board now and don’t miss a minute for what is going on with this book!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Kudos to Valiant for always putting a recap page in before most issues so new readers can always jump in and catch up on a series.

The ironclads have been through a lot during their time on Xeru. From starting out as simple workers looking for the Pure to sustain the Alphan military, their journey has been anything but easy. When one of their own Sam is killed on a mining mission when Sgt. Troy leaves him to die, Peris steps up to lead the revolyt back and ultimately is responsible for Sgt. Troy’s death in retailiation. Once the group returns to their home, they are confronted by the Alphan military. Peris is taken away and the rest are almost certain to fall until some luck falls their way. Suffice to say, this group has become battle tested in a hurry.

This issue jumps in to where Lela has now taken up the leadership role and is planning on a rescue mission for Peris. There’s one problem with this: the Ironclad suits are not meant for that kind of battle but luckily there might be a way to fix that situation. Readers are about to witness the genesis of what these heroes are made of and the fight for freedom.

Meanwhile, readers meet Governor Dohman. He’s got some plans in the works and Peris plays a big part in those. What are the “Lost Suits”? All the while, Lela is bringing the troops to the forefront as they march to battle. The playing field has leveled a bit with these Ironclads making a play to fight the Alphans head on and free Peris. How will this ultimately end? It’s a gutsy call to attack but this group has had nothing to lose from the beginning. What’s one more mission, right?

The story is really starting to its’ stride with this issue. Lela has become the character that fans will be rallying around. There’s also a great moment with Jac that shows how much he’s grown as a character. This group of individuals are finally coming together as a team. Once you see the team ready to go, readers can’t help but be excited about the next phase of this story. The introduction of Governor Dohman and his plans add a nice twist to this saga as well.

Garcia’s art really shines in this issue. Readers get a great team shot as the ironclads level up. They also get some great action panels where we see how this team fares against a real threat. The breakdown of Dohman’s search for the Lost Suits caps off with a last page readers will be locked in with anticipation for the next issue of this story. This venture into another side of the Valiant Universe has been well worth the trip thus far for readers with no signs of slowing down.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING FOR SERIES AND ISSUE #6 ***

The story centers around a group of supernatural vampires who have stayed in the shadows of “normalcy” by running a diner. Blending in society undetected has been one of the biggest ways of survival for this “family.” Anything else leads to a whole world of problems that they can’t afford to test. However, when one of the younger members, Alex, breaks away searching for something more. This new epiphany comes via inspirations from superheroes. After stopping a crime, Alex follows into the world of becoming a vigilante. The taste of something new attracts Joy, another younger member of the group, to join the crime-fighting ways. This doesn’t sit well with Ian and Cynthia, the oldest of the group, who know what’s at stake. Even with the do-good intentions, things fall apart in epic fashion to where we are now. The first story arc is must-read with some very epic surprises throughout that you need to read to believe.

As the "family” picks up the pieces from the fallout of their last adventure, the landscape has changed. Ian, the head of the family, has been missing. Readers do catch up on where is at and it’s a lot to process coming off the heels of issue #5. Cynthia has taken over running the diner with Alex and Joy taking a more increased role with covering shifts at the diner. Being vigilantes has to take a back seat to keeping up the illusion that everything is fine not to draw any suspicion. However, this lasts for only so long as the young duo gets some time to investigate a disturbance at the museum. What they discover is a complete surprise that unfolds into another decision for one of the family to make. Factor in that our heroes may not be the only ones fighting crime as readers get a last page that will have them talking until next issue.

Zdarsky brings back everyone’s favorite diner staff in a very solid issue. Coming off the big reveal in issue #5, Ian’s story will be the one to watch with this arc. It’s a perfect way to open the issue up. The new antagonist hits the ground running and wait till you see his first move! The back and forth between Alex and Joy gave some new perspective on their new status quo. Being superheroes is one thing but being vampires also throws a block in finding normalcy and how they perceive a way to achieve it. How these heroes handle what’s coming up next is going to be something special.

Loo brings our heroes back in a fantastic way. Bringing Ian’s story and how it ties into the past was an excellent visual. Also seeing the “villain” of this issue return was a fun twist. The strongest part was the emotional talk between Joy and Alex. Loo’s art really brought out the full emotion of what was happening there. It served as a solid reminder that there are lives behind the mask. Seeing how the world of the supernatural comes to life in these pages is really a fun treat for readers.

With the rangers away finding a new command center, Earth has been left open for some visitors to stop by and stake claim. King Aradon and his forces have shown up to Earth with only the Green & Red Rangers to stop them. Zordon is calling the gameplan to hold steady but Matt (Green Ranger) takes the lead to confront the invaders. Rocky (Red Ranger) has his young siblings with him and can’t break away to assist due to protecting his secret identity. How will this fare for our heroes?

Meanwhile, the rest of the team is in on Leonis in search of another command center. Once the “Oceans’s 11” style plan is made, the team makes their move against King Veiron. The reigning King has all the information they need to acquire their new home but securing said info isn’t going to be easy. Can the team pull off the big score here? And what did Alpha do?! Read the issue and find out.

Groom continues his run on Mighty Morphin with a very solid read. With the two stories happening here, things can easily get lost in the shuffle but at no point did I feel that happened here. Matt & Rocky’s story being Earth’s last line of defense really picked up steam with some excellent action sequences & seeing Zordon make a change in a long time Ranger rule gave it a nice spin. As for the other half, I’m really enjoying the “heist” story (even though it’s against “The Lion King” and for good reason). There’s some fun moments that readers will enjoy with that heading to next issue.

Hidalgo lets loose with the action for this issue with a great sequence involving the Green Ranger making his play against the invaders. Readers will most definitely enjoy those panels. Another standout moment was Vieron’s gala where the rangers make their move. Very cool visuals here and Alpha stole the show! Excellent final page to close the book out on.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Editor note: you KNOW it’s gonna be a great issue when it kicks off with some Blue Oyster Cult “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” playing on the first panel! LETS’ GO!!!!!!

Grim centers around a reaper by the name of Jessica Harrow. Her job: guiding the recently departed into the next phase of the afterlife. For this assignment, she’s to escort Bryan Michael Andrews on that journey. Bryan just died in a drunk driving accident seeing his ex, Abigail. From here, Jessica becomes his guide into his next phase. Bryan tries sparking conversation with Jessica asking a million questions about what’s next with very little answers to his liking.

When the table is turned on Jessica’s past, she doesn’t have much answers. Their journey comes to an end when they arrive at “the end of the line”. This case is closed so it seems until Jessica notices that something is missing. From there, her story takes a very unexpected turn that will cause some issues and raise more questions than she’s ready to answer….or find out the truth about.

Excellent first issue. Phillips writes a very dynamic character in Jessica Harrow. Readers will be locked in on her story of mystery as she’s more of an enigma than the questions about the afterlife she was asked. The afterlife voyage and destination was an interesting creation for this story. It had the usual dark elements mixed in with some slight light-hearted moments. It served as a good backdrop to the main characters here. As for the story, seeing how this simple “delivery” went awry made for a fun adventure with a solid cliffhanger for the lead going into issue #2.

Flaviano did an incredible job on art duties. Very creative way for the song lyrics in the beginning to appear as floating spirits much like Bryan was a spirit himself. The voyage to the afterlife served up great visuals as did the “retrieval mission” & Jessica’s “reaction” to what was happening there. Seeing her break from being serious about her mission and not showing any emotion to letting loose near the end will keep readers engaged for the next chapter of this book. Interesting final page as well.

Overall, Grim #1 takes readers on a wild trip through the afterlife that raises more questions than answers. This is not a bad thing as the book showcases great storytelling & eye catching art to keep the story of Jessica Harrow one to keep an eye one. Don’t fear the reaper here! Make sure to pick this up at your next trip to the local comic shop!

Welcome to an all new edition of the ODPH Podcast’s complementary comic book blog: Parlay points! on this edition, we’re checking out another great series on the Comixology Originals line (Note: the book will be released via Dark Horse Comics in print later this year). After the events of last issue, Domo has tracked Gabriel down to another school. After being held off from seeing him, Domo gets some help to see him at an open mic event later that day. Meanwhile, back at Aster Academy, the rest of the Tug-O-War team is trying to adapt to the latest arrival to the academy: Emil, who’s actions are rubbing them the wrong way.

The head coach makes a decision for “team building” by pairing members together via the tug-o-war ropes. This doesn’t sit well with most of the team, especially Domo who’s now paired with Emil. How will this play out? Can Domo meet Gabriel with Emil bound to him? Also, if he does meet, what will Gabriel say? Read the issue and find out!

Love and War continues to be a fun read. The story has a few surprises this issue and showcases interesting dynamics amongst the team. Seeing how Domo is reacting to Emil was a highlight of the book. Another noteworthy piece was Jocosta’s mission to become captain of the team while trying to take out Domo’s chances. Gabriel’s moments in the book will come off as a big surprise for readers of the book, but it adds some intrigue heading into the next issue.

Ng continues to deliver an entertaining vision of this story to readers. After coming off the more “serious” moments of the issue’s beginning, the tone of the book shifts back to light-hearted energy of issue #1. The reactions of Jocosta when giving her speech on how she will win captain was very amusing. The other members of the team had some great moments as well. It should be interesting to see where this story heads into the next issue.

En route to do a good deed, Kay’s life gets pulled into another unexpected direction.

While Kay originally brushes this notion off, she quickly changes her tune when a face to face confrontation sets up the long night ahead. Very cool first issue. Diggle sets the tone early of this book will tie into the world of fantasy and the supernatural. Kay’s story is a very relatable one that readers can side with her on. Seeing how the grandmother tried warning Kay of respecting the mythology of the night was a nice touch. Once Mona appears in the story, then this book really takes off. It’s an unlikely pairing yet doesn’t seem to be too awkward in grasping the current situation. Seeing how Kay reacts to this new world she’s walked into is going to be exciting to follow. The book also has a great cliffhanger ending for where this story goes next.

Brokenshire does a great job setting up this place of mystery. There is always a tense feel to the panels after Kay finds Mona that doesn’t let up the rest of the story. This is balanced out with Mona’s fear of whatever is looking for her to Kay’s flipping of emotions as the story progresses. Seeing Kay’s turn to panic after doubting her grandmother’s warning adds to the heightened emotions of the pair running for their lives. Readers will sense the horror movie-esque feel with this book and be very locked in for the remainder of this story of myths and suspense.

Give Gillen all the praise you can. No other book in comics flips characters of lore and present them in such a fresh new energy. Take a look at Robin Hood and his Merry Men for example. They are presented in such a creative way, but that's one of the biggest strengths of this book. This issue has solid moments throughout and where this story twists and turns is an absolute must-read.

While praising Gillen, Mora deserves that praise as well. Giving all these notable characters such unique visuals is something to be excited when you read this book. The action sequences are second to none. Readers are in for some amazing sights throughout this issue. Excellent job all around.

Valiant also has a recap 101 page explaining the current basics to new readers in this issue as well.

Archer is a highly skilled martial artist & marksman who’s sole purpose in life was to kill “The Devil” aka Armstrong, an immortal with a knack for drinking and adventures. Once that situation was cleared up when Archer finds out the truth behind the people who raised him, these two became best friends and thus their escapades become the word of legend in Valiant lore.

For this story, Archer has to bail out Armstrong of another situation where SHOCKER Armstrong is dealing with an altercation with people “with some rakes and hoes” who steal his magical satchel while having a few beverages. During this incident, Armstrong’s ear is cut off.

Normally this would be bad, but Armstrong is immortal so it will grow back, right? Apparently not so much. With Armstrong’s immortality in question, the ever noble Archer sets out to find the truth behind this problem. Thus the adventure begins……

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS ISSUE! Now keep in mind, I’’m an old school Valiant reader & the best friends was one of my favorite books. Seeing how Foxe has brought them back, this issue couldn’t be any more perfect. It has great usage of word bubbles to explain both main characters (see panels below) so throughout the issue, when they’re doing anything noteworthy, there is an explanation or clarification for. The story gives a new twist to “Can an immortal die?” There are some exciting twists to this tale that readers can look forward to with this series.

Fiorito does an excellent job on art duties for this issue. Readers see first hand what Archer is capable of when you mess with his bestie. The description of each fighting move is a nice touch. Seeing the banter between our heroes was another great point of this issue. From Archer’s frustration to Armstrong’s devil may care reactions, this issue had stand-out visuals that really made this a truly fun read.
