After a brief attack, Superman addresses Lane in a blunt manner. This reflects the anger of the Peacemakers efforts to impose. From here, readers watch what Superman does best: inspire hope in hopelessness. Saving bystanders once an attack vehicle crashes is perfectly narrated by Lane. It mirrors the readers thoughts as this new version of Superman takes action. This builds towards a solid conclusion. Aaron builds a mix of classic teases with new takes. The final page solidifies the darkness lying ahead. One fight is over for now but easily not for long.

This leads him into another attempt to save a possible victim. Action reminds Batman of how human he truly is. It also brings up another lingering theme of this current arc.

The question of rejuvenation gets a surprising conversation out of his best friend. Seeing Taylor tackle a Batman/Superman debate leads into a new direction with big ramifications. Readers might be a touch shocked at Superman’s response but it fits in place here. This kicks off a new stat quo (so to speak). Seeing how the fallout leads Batman into his investigation provides another classic confrontation. This gets upstaged by the close. The chapter ends with a definitive statement as to how human Batman has truly become.

Once the story returns, the focus turns to Lois Lane. Seeing her inexperience with dealing with a fully powered Doomsday amps up the drama. The rest of the DCU waits with baited breath as the fight rages on. Events shift gears to an unlikely character jumping into the fray. It leads to a shocking twist.

From here, the fallout starts spiraling to the close. Where events land provides an eerie calm as time is not on the Kents side. Judging by the final page, more elements are in play than even the Man of Steel can fathom.

Mora and Sánchez immediately hits readers with an incredible two page splash. The recap of the Time Traveler gives more gravity to the situation at hand. In Waller’s defeat, the Trinity of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman started rebuilding the League in a bold ambition.

Waid picks an unlikely lead for this opening chapter. Capitalizing on the expanded roster, featuring the naive Air Raid reflects the readers view. The story carries a massive weight as the League is reformed into a version never seen. With nearly every DC hero on roster, the possibilities are endless. Seeing Flash narrate the changes to new readers is a solid touch before jumping head first into the conflict.

Once the team rolls out, the writing takes the into a surprising direction. Instead of dealing with the dramatic onslaught at hand, the focus goes to a wounded soldier. Readers watch as the team powers together to save one life. As big as the threat is, simplifying it to a heroic act is what the League is all about. This leads into a great closing act. Waid leaves the audience with much to process including a very unforeseen cliffhanger ending. If this is any indication, the league is back in a BIG way!

To capture the epic level of events, few can outshine Dan Mora. Along with Bonvillain on colors, the League mission feels larger than life. With the opening Full & two page splashes, things start off on a great note. It transitions into tagging along with Air Raid. The humorous panels quickly fade as the team jumps into the issue at hand.

The art carries a tense feel as the JL is showcasing their skills. Panels feel bold as the heroes scramble to gain control of the situation. This rises up a few notches when attempting to save the wounded soldier. Seeing Star Sapphire and Flash race against the odds will have readers franticly waiting for the outcome. This rolls into the final pages. The closing pages pull off a fantastic swerve dousing the happy win for something more devious on the way.

Without question, DC’s premier superhero team returns to the forefront in a monster way. Waid’s writing escalates the drama while bringing out the best of the huge roster. Mora, Bonvillain and Maher craft amazing images reminding everyone why the League is the team others set the benchmark too. Brace for an incredible run in the making.

With Eclipso on the brink of total victory, hope is fading fast. The Justice League have been taken out. Luckily, they have some pretty heavy hitters ready to make the final save. Will the JSA be enough to stop the Lord of Darkness from succeeding?

Eclipso’s endgame proves to be quite the challenge for both teams. Waid sets the stage by channeling the greatest weakness between both teams. The writing leans into the insecurities of the legacy heroes. It offers a very realistic theme on top of the conflict. The result challenges the younger JL. This works to further cement Eclipso’s control until the overconfidence sits in.

With Superman in peril, Batman steps up to take over the situation. Batman shows concern (in his own manner) which pushes the heroes where they need to go to win. He isn’t alone as another hero crashes the party. The conflict builds perfectly to a break. Its fallout felt quick but all points needed were covered. It completes a great story which is par for the course with this series.

Gutiérrez and Herms elevate Eclipso to new heights with the art. The menacing half page panel kicks off his final play against the Greenland army. It’s countered by a near full page image of Batman and Robin running into action. Once this is unveiled, the action sequences come in fast and furious. This plays well to establish the Eclipso driven feelings between the JSA and their legacy counterparts.

The JSA-Eclipso six panel page cements that point home. It gets complimented by a powerful hero entering the final round. The art team sets the stage behind a Green Lantern fight. From here, pacing escalates events into the powerful close. A full page explosion brings the house down as the heroes attempt to close out the fight. Wands’ lettering took that moment to a whole new level. The aftermath leads to a memorable final image. It is one that will stick with readers as a reminder of how great these heroes are. Excellent work.

Eclipso’s endgame comes into focus with a spectacular closing chapter. Waid maxes out the heroic strengths at play with the writing. With the “All In” movement full speed ahead at DC Comics, many popular characters are getting a moment in the spotlight. One of those characters is Renee Montoya aka THE QUESTION. That was then, this is now. Montoya has been offered a new job. Some would say its’ a bit more high profile. It’s not every day that the Trinity of the DCU comes calling with an offer. How does Montoya handle her new assignment with the Justice League?

Segura lays the foundation for a very intriguing plot. Montoya is still reeling from her loss in Gotham. The writing reflects the emotional wear of that event. It’s quickly offset by the offer via Superman. With the sense of doubt in his voice, Montoya knows there is more at play than a social visit. With such a big concept as JLU is, The Question belongs in the mix. It also challenges Montoya on a few levels.

Giving The Question her own “team” looks to provide a fair share of laughs and heroics. It gives a bright spot before the true conflict comes in. Segura hides the real play at hand very well. Seeing Montoya in action gives readers a sense of belonging as she attacks the intruder. Once the closing pages start, it displays great action before the final reveal. Based of the closing page, the innocence of the League’s hope is forever changed.

Tormey and Fajardo jr. bring the vigilante front and center for this story. The new stat quo is explained with a fantastic two page spread. Montoya’s costumed entrance jumps off the page with a one panel image. This leads into a strong flashback sequence. Readers watch as the conversation between Superman, Batman and Montoya lead into a new home for the faceless vigilante. It only is upstaged by a full page image of Montoya’s ex, offering pleasantries behind their past.

The conflict introduces itself with big action panels. Montoya and her team waste little time jumping into the fray. The images flow very quickly as the team fights to neutralize the threat at hand. Montoya displays her unique weapon skills while turning the drama up. What lays in the aftermath is a puzzle starting to form pieces. The closing page leaves no hesitation that fears were correct. There is much to enjoy with the presentation of this chapter.

The next phase in Renee Montoya’s life spirals towards conflict in the first issue. Segura brings out the best of The Question with the writing. Tormey, Fajardo jr. and Schubert depict a hero finding themselves along with a case that might be too great to overcome. In two issues, Ayodele has connected Storm to the audience in such a distinct manner. Even when her world is crashing around her, Storm fights onward. One element that may throw some readers off is the post-Krakoa sentiments of the public.

Not everyone is accepting of mutants back on the public scene. Storm handles this like a true goddess. Through poise and grace, she raises herself above the comments below her.

The hospital sequence brings a more grounded approach to that dilemma. Storm's response is one that fits her character to a tee. Ensuring other mutants have no issues there is second nature to Storm.

The rest of the page is a race to get help. With the closing page, readers see a familiar face all too ready to help someone who always puts others first.

Wernick sends Storm directly into action with the opening pages. The pace speeds with every panel. There's a great missile dropkick followed by lightning strike sequence which will excite readers.

Her condition shoots to the lead with a strong visual of her blood on her sleeve. In the distance of a pig-headed captain and crew, the image lets readers know Storm is weakened but fighting.

The hospital moments are filled with a range of emotions. None more shocking than Storm realizing time is running out. In her journey, Storm gets a full page splash of "Oblivion Waits". This sub-plot continues to build in the background.

From here, events lead right to the closing image. Seeing who's hear to help greets readers will a full page image. It caps off a fast growing story with big ramifications for failure.

This series has already set a high bar of how Ororo Munroe should be portrayed in comics (and beyond). Ayodele guides readers through the dire search for hope with his strong writing. Adams juggles many characters without skipping a beat. Coming off the heels of the Civil Corps special, Jordan and Stewart are sinking fast. The writing reflects the immediate danger they are in and trying to prevent. Making a beloved Lantern into the main antagonist proves to amp up the stakes as things progress. Their story emulates the “never surrender” themes both bring to the table.

Meanwhile, a few side plots get much needed time to grow. Thaaros and Guy Garnder’s moments come across magnified to the overall tale. This is especially true with Thaaros’ new upgrade. Longtime readers of GL will appreciate the callback.

Speaking of familiar faces, one stands out as the surprise star of the issue. Knowing the stakes, the writing allows a reluctant hero to jump into the spotlight. It causes an uneasy alliance that will only grow more combustible as time goes on. This leads into a shocking close. With more surprises in tow, Adams wraps events off on quite the cliffhanger. There’s no way fans can’t be counting down the days till next time after this chapter.

Xermánico and Fajardo Jr. grants Thaaros a huge entrance into this chapter. The full page image leaves no question on his upgrade. It’s quickly upset by the breaking action involving Guy Gardner and company. The panels move brisky to indicate the quick action. This leads into a Lantern pair’s escape from doom.

A series of two page splashes shows Mogo in hot pursuit of Jordan and Stewart. It is an easy hit with readers. The art also invites the surprise hero into the fold. This elevated the conflicts end as each image created the true notion of a major event taking place. Readers are left with another full page image moving events onto the next chapter with ease. Things are only skyrocketing form here.

Legends. It is a word that gets thrown around quite often. Few times does the word encompass what it’s attached to. In the case of DC’s first superhero team, that is the only way to describe them. Alan Scott. Jay Garrick. Ted Grant. Definitions of true timeless heroics.

The Justice Society of America have been fighting the good fight since the days of World War II. Since then, the team has adapted through the years without loosing itself in beliefs. It has also encompassed a family sense with many legacy heroes filling in the ranks. How does the team fare now in the new stat quo of “All In”?

JSA #1 by Jeff Lemire, Diego Olortegui, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands (DC Comics) looks to provide those answers in much more with its’ re-entry into the DCU.

Lemire takes the team to task with the latest installment. At its’ core, the heroic ethics of the team remain unchanged by the eras they fight in. With the fallout of Amanda Waller’s actions in “Absolute Power”, they appear to be the most challenged. This new perspective is clearly seen in the writing of Obsidian.

The hero’s overly aggressive nature is a stark contrast from the team’s more grounded nature. It provides opposition to Jade. Her leadership as the new chair is questioned. The fight to stay true to form proves to be a difficult task. Other members are split on where they side. Where the elder members would handle this quickly, the younger generation are filled with emotional outbursts.

Readers do see a quick glimpse of the veteran lineup but they have their hands filled with a true threat. This doesn’t stop Lemire from throwing in a big swerve with the close. Readers watch as the final page drops a strong cliffhanger for the classic team to conquer.

Olortegui and Guerrero catch readers up to speed with a quick synopsis of the team with the opening pages. A near pull page image showcases the original lineup in action. Once the story swings into present day, Obsidian demonstrates his powers with a big two page splash. This sets the tone for the emotional wear the team carries. Adapting to the current hostile state proves to be a stronger adversary than realized.

The classic team gets in the action with a few key panels. Readers watched as the heroes fall into familiar territory with the action, A two page splash involving Dr. Fate amps up the danger before returning to present. Events conclude with a full page panel that will have fans excited to see what happens next. This is JSA storytelling 101.

Aaron digs into Superman being the symbol more than the man for this opening chapter. The backstory of Krypton paints a very distinct notion. Being considered lower class forges the house of El. The writing has set them up as the common citizen rather than the elite of the planet’s society. It reflects how Superman is seen in many eyes. They both represent Truth, Justice and a better tomorrow.

Once events shift back to Earth, the story beigns to move swiftly. Aaron sets up Kal-El as a hero questioning his actions. The uncertainty of his motives adds to an already complex character. Once danger strikes the small Brazilian town he is in, the true hero readers know comes out. The writing debuts Superman in a grand way. The only downside is it is short lived, but with good reason. Other characters crash the party flipping everything on its’ axis. It leads to a teasing close as a new era has launched without question.

Sandoval and Arreola depicts Krypton as a soul crushing environment pending the status. The Els are shown to be making their best efforts to survive the looming odds. A two page spread clearly states the divide in classes. It also droves home the meaning of the “S” symbol. Another two page splash shows an all too familiar fate for Krypton as the unraveling of secrets begins.

What follows next continues the path of putting personal choices ahead of the overall good. The result leads to more fun match-ups of classic characters with the backdrop of a world broken. Readers are left with a closing image setting the stage for a bigger conflict to finally unfold.

The art delivers a big debut for a classic pair of “hereos”. The near full page shot of Quantum and Woody welcomes them into the conflict in their own way. That comes in the form of one of DC’s greatest superhero teams.

The injection of the JSA throws a great dynamic into play. Readers watch as the team steps up to take down the finest. Waid dishes up a shocking way to try and free Batman from Eclipso’s clutches. It is a moment that will have fans’ attention. This leads into the closing portion of the chapter. Just when readers think they have some answers, Waid flips the situation to provide a strong cliffhanger until next time. There is a reason this series gets all the deserved praise it gets. It always showcases fantastic storytelling.

Gutiérrez and Bonvillain make an immediate impact with the opening pages. Eclipso’s return to Earth is greeted with a bold full page image of the possessed heroes. The following panel of the maniacal laughter strikes a chord with the audience. Eclipso looks every bit as an unhinged threat to take on all challengers.

On the other hand, the art depicts Robin as a frantic, concerned hero. This comes from witnessing the big two under Eclipso’s control. The sequence with Commissioner Gordon come across larger than life due to some JSA influence. Seeing the subtle change in the Bat-signal works as a defining moment of events changing.

Along with these pages, Robin’s big moment pops off the page due to Wands’ lettering. The panel makes a big statement and switches the course of the story. It leads into a ever-changing final act. The Guy Gardner and Durlans side-plots break up the straight forward pacing. Each add another layer of a fastly rising tale. The Durlans surprise helps to keep readers guessing. Knowing the stakes at hand, the writing teases a few possibilities. Ultimately, events swing back towards the heroics of the Lanterns. It builds up towards a solid closing act. Star Sapphire takes center stage before the chapter bows out with more drama on the horizon.

Xermánico and Fajardo Jr. display the full extent of Mogo’s actions with nothing held back. The loud two-page spread leaves a trail of destruction behind as the story flies into gear. Once the Lanterns head into action, the art reflects an energetic feel. It is filled with fast moving and direct panels.

Two-Face is a perfect choice for this adventure. In dealing with true identities, Harvey Dent is as complex as Bruce Wayne. This reflects a line Batman says driving to Gotham. “Let Your True Self Be your disguise” works on all parties involved. Both Batman and Robin escape their pain via their alter egos. Through this, the pair heads right into action. Waid stages the conflict exceptionally. It flows with big action and brewing drama. The result leads to a great cliffhanger ending as the Duo’s first year has only just begun.

Samnee and Lopes lock readers in on the beginnings of a historic team. The opening two page splash ramps up on the surging moment. It’s followed up by panels spotlighting the difference in demeanors. The writing doesn’t wait to start dropping big moments with the story. Seeing John Stewart have his hands full with a familiar face creates a high pace that rarely slows down. Considering the events of the United Planets and “Absolute Power”, the Lanterns have been tested greatly. Their latest challenge brings them to their breaking point!

The showdown with Thaaros conveys the drama that’s been building for months. Once the Dark Star ring comes into play, stakes are raised. The fallout shakes events up quite a bit. Nothing makes a Hal Jordan story better than when things go off the rails. It’s packed with big action and high drama. However, the final act is what catches the most attention. As a last play is made, the closing page delivers on one (last) return capping this off and leading to the next chapter.

Guy Gardner’s side mission delivers on another big return. It is complimented by Alan Scott crashing the party. Seeing all the Lanterns in the mix is a huge win for fans. The writing is focused on delivering an epic event. There is no mis-step taken here.

Larroca and Guerrero keep readers guessing with the returning characters. Stewart’s initial conflict carries a tremendous feel to the panels. This is largely in part to his returning co-star. Long time GL readers will appreciated who’s back. The art gives the character a near full page entrance. In its’ aftermath, the pages reflect on the desperate time at hand. Before going into action, there is a fantastic full splash showing the Lanterns in a new light: hopeful.

Two page splits construct the Thanagar face-off. Readers watch as the art team set the stage for a last hurrah. With a huge full page attack, Thaaros throws down the gauntlet. The following pages flood with drama and well timed breaks.

The art also brings another familiar face for the mid act. Seeing the Emerald Crusader make the showdown via full page panel is perfect. The art complements his conflict incredibly. Same can be said for Guy Gardner’s mission as well. Once the pages start winding down, One more full page introduction appears to close out an already impressive start for the GL corps event.

The final attempt to handle the United Planets starts the GL Corps off in the “All In” movement. Kennedy-Johnson and Adams balance out the bright spots and desperate hope for a thrilling start. The mystery behind who escaped the Phantom Zone leads into a great Superman and Supergirl sequence. It never felt like a moment was missed as Waid builds up the drama heading into the final act. At this stage, more clues are finally revealed as Superman makes a call. The result leads into a surprising closing page. If you are a fan of the classic hero tales, this one is sure to please.

Henry and Herms are on the call for art duties. The antagonists make a big debut with a loud full page splash. From here, the pages are filled with excellent back and forth between Jimmy and Clark. It provides just enough time to pause before the action comes in fast. The art team display the conflict with a huge sense of urgency.

Its’ fallout showcases the next phase in unlocking the mystery at hand. The art team conveys the feel of the classic Superman tales with each interaction with his team and Lois. The result leads to a fantastic final page. It's a cliffhanger that looks to be the tip of something special on the way.

The back-up Supergirl story dives in to a mission shrouded in mystery. Whenever the United Planets are involved, nothing is off limits. It sets the foundation with many questions following as something is off with Supergirl. Judging by the final page, it is a safe assessment Kara’s latest adventure is larger than anyone has realized.

Snyder returns to Gotham City with a bold new take on this initial chapter. Stripping away much of the lore of Bruce Wayne gives a very grounded lead. The one notable theme quickly picked up is there is more raw aggression behind his actions. It is a reflection of the world he lives in. This version of Gotham feels more unstable and unpredictable. Seeing classic characters retold in this lense provides a thrilling and complicated trip.

There are plenty of changes of traditional characters. Alfred Pennyworth is a grizzled agent. Killer Croc is Bruce’s childhood friend. The rogues gallery gets presented in very different ways. The story still has a Batman born from tragedy, but not the way one would think. Snyder is clearly having fun with the creativity while dancing around Gotham’s dangerous streets. Once the conflict kicks into gear, the writing shows a more violent Batman than has been seen in recent years. It caps off with a surprising showdown that doesn’t disappoint. This is an all new Batman that packs a rageful punch.

Dragotta and Martin make this version of Gotham stand out for many reasons. The flashback sequences mix the color schemes to camouflage the tragedy building. This plays well into the new origin story. Bruce Wayne comes across as an ordinary citizen. It is a big contrast to the playboy billionaire alter ego readers know.

Once the first rogue strikes, the art team crafts an uneasy encounter filled with unapologetic images. Black Mask and the Party Animals make an immediate statement. It’s met head on later with the imposing Batman unleashing his fury. The full page image of the Batman flying into action speaks volumes. It sets a high pace as each panel speeds through the chaos. Once events settle into the final act, the art keeps up the suspense. Flying into the close, the two page spread caps off a thrill ride that has miles to go before its’ end.

Thompson heads back into the deep cover lore of the Birds history with this chapter. Cassandra Cain (Batgirl) being the undercover agent is an easy hit with playing the role as hired security. The infiltration of the Ninth Day team leads into a deeper discovery. It is well paced as Cain “proves” herself to the mysterious organization. Oracle and Canary’s conversation with Queen Nubia adds on to the mounting pressure to deal with the growing threat.

The chapter also introduces some new members for this go-around. Grace Choi and Onyx “meeting” with Big Barda provides a fun break from the mission at hand. The sparring session is filled with great action and one-liners. It does take up a solid portion of the book but is well placed. The ending leaves on a solid cliffhanger with many questions arising. Rest assured, there is way more miles to go before this conclusion.

Basri and Lucas open Cain’s first “meeting” with an action packed two page splash. This plays into the calm demeanor of Cain’s undercover work. Only on its’ closing panel do readers see a subtle smirk. It plays off the anxiousness of Black Canary as she converses with Oracle. Knowing the past history with the Amazons, the art mirrors the thought of failure is unacceptable.

Readers are greeted with a great sequence of Barda sparring with the new recruits. This begins with a full page panel that shows Barda ready for action. Once the punches start flying, the panels start ramping up the quickness of the fight. Cowles’ lettering adds so much to these panels as well. Events close off with a near full page parting shot of discovery. It’s a solid way to close off what is already an intriguing start to a new chapter for the team.

The Birds of Prey kick off their latest chapter with a strong lead-in. Thompson builds the drama with fantastic art. Basri, Lucas and Cowles balances the undercover work with solid imagery. The last page will have readers locked in for another excellent ride!

Time jumping one year after “Absolute Power”, the foundation of the new league plays into the concept of superhero evolving. Making Booster Gold the lead character is a perfect choice to usher in this portion. Gold’s legacy is a mixed one that has taken many turns. Seeing his reactions as he is optimistic for the chances given make a strong impression. As the conflict arises, the pace speeds up with each page. The resolution provides a shocking discovery. Once the close comes into focus, the writing leaves readers with a mic drop moment for what lies ahead.

It matches up perfectly to the eerie feel of the Darkseid portion. The tone dictates a new path to acquiring power. Seeing the new approach leads into dark places, not only in the DCU, but his own mind. The conflicts cause a showdown with an unlikely foe. It leads into more revelations that solidify a change in destiny.

Once that is cleared up, the story starts coming together with the other portion to create something brand new. It also creates something very darker in nature as well. This is followed up by a strong two page image putting the plan in place. Seeing Booster’s facial reaction connects the sense of hope with readers. It is quickly dashed as Darkseid hits the scene.

It is directly in line with Craig’s art for Darksied’s new beginnings. The pages are brooding with a sober overtone. Each conflict is portrayed with a blunt and unapologetic feel. This is Darksied at his best. Once he comes across his “prize”, the art locks in the moment with bright coloring . This leads to a huge one page image declaring a new shift has happened. It is a perfect homage to a legendary artist (the late George Perez).

The attack on Gamora kicks off with Nightwing giving another motivation speech before combat. His evolution into the face of the new DCU cannot be denied.

Once the battle starts, pacing moves the spotlight onto a few key characters. The conflict between Wonder Woman and Steel gets a proper payoff. Hearing the dialogue between Barry Allen and Hal Jordan as their play is made is vintage superhero 101. It balances out the faceoff between Waller and Nightwing before sending the story into its’ closing act.

Readers watch as Waid throws in a few surprises leading to the strong finish. An unlikely hero becomes the key component leading to victory. Another’s actions lead to a change that concludes the “Dawn Of DC” era. Waid balances out both moments to compliment the fate of Waller. Her fate is a fantastic twist that ultimately leads to a new era for DC’s heroes. Once the final page is finished, there is no question readers just witnessed true change in the DC Universe.

Seeing the Flash/Green Lantern team-up pops off the pages. Jordan’s smiles through the conflict reminds readers of the fearlessness he often shows. Another partner of Hal’s gets a full page splash that leas into an amazing two page spread. The closing panels with Waller demonstrates a wide scale of emotions as the event concludes on a satisfying note. Mora and Sanchez’s epilogue pages leave readers on a fitting point as a era has ended with a fresh start waiting in the wings.
