Coming off a shocking debut, The Brainaic Queen sets out to acquire more power. Standing in her way is a weakened Superman and embarrassed Lobo. Williamson quickly establishes the Queen’s long-term plan. The writing speeds into the action with a big set-up. The payoff is met with some added steps before concluding.

The “odd couple” paring of Superman and Lobo shines in this exchange. It gives the audience the “hero” comeback that is needed. The initial battle concludes somewhat quickly though. Some might feel this is underwhelming, but they have to keep in mind, there’s one more chapter left.

The story’s pace causes the focus to go back on Brainiac. With a big group of characters involved, Williamson makes ample time to start wrapping up individual plot points. Shifting gears in this manner works to send the story into a definitive final place.

Sandoval and Mendonca split art duties for the issue with Sánchez coloring. Right from the opening, readers are hit with a massive two page splash of the Brainiac Queen’s plan. This is responded with Lobo making a declaration. The panels transcend to capture a side of him rarely seen: calm and focused.

With another two page spread, the story begins a domino fall into the final act. There will be a full page image that fans will have MUCH to say about involving Lex Luthor. It fits the drastic times of which the Superman family faces. With a definitive final attack staged, the chapter ends leaving fans excited to see the conclusion unfold.

With hope fading fast, the Man of Steel wages a comeback against Brainaic and his greatest creation. Williamson speeds events along with solid writing. The art team builds the action with some excellent images. The closing moment ensures readers will get their money’s worth heading into the “House” finale.

The chapter opens with Man-Bat gloating about his perceived victory. Flying through the Gotham skyline, he has a prisoner in tow. Batman is shackled and along for the ride. This is ended by a flying “R” which hits the chains.

Now freed, The Dynamic Duo is back! Man-Bat’s cult leads an attack but is easily thwarted. In it aftermath, a call is made. Batman continues to go after Man-Bat. Robin is in chase to stop the hundreds of toxic-infected bats flying into the city. Can they save the day yet again?

Readers ride-along as the pair heads right into danger. Pacing ushers the excitement to a steady confrontation. In its’ wake, some loose ends are tied up. More importantly, some other avenues of adventure are left open. None will be more important than the final page reveal. A dark moment in the Wayne family is about to be revisited. Get Ready!

Williamson presents a steady finale to the current arc. Since it's beginning, the series has been anchored by the rebuilding family bond. With this chapter, the pair make great strides forward. Seeing the dialogue with Robin calling the shots was a strong point of change.

The conclusion of conflict was also another highlight. The writing kept things progressing with ease as the pair took the upper hand. It's fallout circles back to their struggles of rebuilding. The moment is poignant as to letting much needed healing starts (however short lived). It's another factor of why this series stands out from the other Bat books.

Art duties are split again which both teams leaving memorable images. De Meo and Niro kicks the story into gear with a gorgeous two page splash. Man-Bat’s depiction here carries a distinct horror feel. This leads into another two page spread that kicks off the final stand in style.

The family gets a quiet moment to regroup after everything via Čižmešija and Locus. Readers see the slow repair of the family’s broken bond via the emotions. It is a fleeting moment due to the set-up for the close, but hits its’ mark. The full page shot to conclude the issue with will most certainly have fans talking after witnessing it.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

With not a moment to spare, Gotham’s most famous father and son aim to end Man-Bat’s schemes once and for all. Williamson stacks the deck with a balance of family drama and fast paced action. The art teams craft a solid finale with more clues to where the pair’s journey to healing and heroics lead. There’s much to enjoy with this series!

The milestone opens up with a quick recap of the history of the X-Men. In nine panels, readers walk from the beginnings to the shocking choice of Charles Xavier. Choosing to bend to Orchis will to save mutantkind backfired as his students rose to the occasion. Xavier turns himself in for his crimes. His troubles have only just begun…

As an armed convoy transports him away, Wolverine gets in its’ way. This is no rescue mission. Logan is out for punishment. His quest is stopped by someone who wants to speak with Xavier first. Magneto disposes of Wolverine to have a long overdue heart to heart about the end of Krakoa.

Meanwhile, the X-Men head back to what is left of Krakoa after the fall. Kafka is waiting and has much news for the Children of The Atom. Readers watch as a major revelation takes place. Once a choice is made, some mutants are not on board. The conflict is perfect for a certain mutant who returns. Apocalypse is back on Krakoa. He doesn’t waste time in making his presence felt. How will he handle the revelations as well?

What happens next is a lasting battle for the ages. The fate of Krakoa is decided once and for all. Left in its’ wake is a new direction for the remaining mutants. A glimpse into certain futures leaves one thing this era needs: Hope. It also leaves a shocking conclusion for one character as the Krakoan legacy is not soon to be forgotten.

With the amount of talent here for the 700th issue of Uncanny X-Men, it is clear this is an end of an era. Charles Xavier proves to be a looming presence throughout the issue. The conversation with Magneto feels like a passing of the torch. Roles also feel reversed with one notable quote thrown in the mix. It is a needed area for the transition to move from this era to a new one. This leads into a eye-raising closing arc which proves nothing will be the same as it was.

The Krakoa piece doesn’t hold back on give fans strong moments. With one major revelation, it clears up one of the era’s darkest hours. Apocalypse enters the story with anger and confusion. His role in this era was a major point of surprise. Seeing the era slip away causes a natural reaction for the powerful mutant. Its’ fallout leaves readers knowing changes are on the way. This sets up an engaging playing field from a dream that most woke up from.

The art showcase comes through with the middle section of the chapter. There are some full page action images that will delight readers. Action scenes hold nothing back. There are a few images that level up in the brutality. One character shows a side of violence rarely seen. Considering the parties involved, it reflects the anger of loss with Krakoa’s fall.

Xavier and Magento’s conversation is filled with frustration and bitterness. The old friends reactions to each others quips display this, esp. Xavier. The realization of what he’s done conveys his acceptance of defeat. The emotions of loss carry into the conclusion. The series of panels saying goodbye mirror the loss of a dream. It departs with a series of images tipping the changes in the new landscape. The art leaves readers with a noteworthy closing panel that should play a bigger role down the road.

With an oversized finale, the Krakoan era is put to rest. Stacked with an all-star line-up of creators, the writing lines up final goodbyes and new beginnings. Images of intense fighting to somber realization of a fallen dream will have fans attention. One dream is over, what will rise from its’ ashes?

For this entry, it's a showdown of Dark Knights! In one corner is Bruce Wayne. Standing across from his is his worst nightmare come to life. Failsafe is a robotic figure uploaded with Zur-En-Arh. The remorseless backup personality of Batman has ousted Wayne from his role as Gotham’s protector.

With Gotham City slipping further in Failsafe 's control, Batman takes one last attempt to stop his greatest creation.

The chapter opens up with a flashback sequence. A young Bruce Wayne is getting taught by Daniel Captio. The lesson delves into the creation of back up personalities. Bruce is very against this. Captio explains how this can only help in his quest for vengeance.

Fast forward to the present and Bruce’s reservations prove to be true. With Failsafe running loose in Gotham, Batman prepares to make his stand. Tim Drake lowers into a cave. Bruce gives the signal to contact “The Family”.

Meanwhile, Damian Wayne has become a prisoner to Failsafe and his new “Robin.” Damian gives fair warning about what he is going to do. Failsafe ends his attempt for help with a pre-set trap. The new Dynamic Dup is poised to “Cure” Gotham.

Readers see the key players set in place as the roads lead to one stop. Before that gets there, a LONG overdue plot point is addressed. Before battle, Bruce does something which many fans have been waiting to see since “Knight Terrors” ended.

From that moment, it is game on! Blackgate Prison becomes center stage. Batman vs. Failsafe! Winner take all! The action speeds things at a high pace. Multiple characters are featured in between the action. Its’ resolution is a surprise one but pays off big. This leads into another confrontation that cements the winner’s status as Gotham’s protector. The final page is a perfect send-off to where this chapter closes.

Zdarsky gives readers a massive payoff for a few threads he has been placing in his run. Captio lurking throughout this saga finally has a good purpose with the conclusion. There is a solid sequence in the closing act where the teacher becomes the student in their dialogue.

The writings’ strength is the long overdue conversation between Bruce and the Bat-Family. In Zdarsky’s run, their relationship has been continuously fractured. Before combat, Bruce does the one thing that many have been waiting for. This leads into a grounded moment that can only go upward. The resolution is very smart and gives a fitting end to this story for now. There’s a lot for superhero fans to enjoy with this one.

Jiménez and Morey feature Bruce in a rotating emotional state. The meeting with the Bat Family ranges from disappointment to new found confidence. This rolls into the final showdown flawlessly. The full page image of Batman at Blackgate changes the mood instantly. Action spirals out of organized chaos with the multiple battles taking place. There is absolutely no way to be let down by the panels featured. The chapter is closed off with an iconic shot that ushers in the next phase of the first family of Gotham. Nothing but win.

FINAL POINT: 9.3

The Fall and Rise of Bruce Wayne comes to a fever pitch with this strong finale. Zdarsky dives into a few themes that hit their marks with a bullseye. Jiménez, Morey and Cowles hold nothing back when it comes to the action and danger in a face-off fans won’t want to miss!

RISE OF THE POWERS OF X #5 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Orchis nearly defeated the Children of the Atom. Nathaniel Essex has now become Enigma, a near god and threat to all. These events convinced Charles Xavier to cut a deal with Orchis to save mutantkind. The deal goes against everything the X-Men have fought for.

Luckily, Xavier’s students didn’t go along with plans. They made a victorious stand against Nimrod. With only one threat still looming, the fate of Mutantkind is now in one person’s hands.

Rise of the Powers of X #5 by Kieron Gillen, Luciano Vecchio, David Curiel, and Clayton Cowles (Marvel Entertainment) sets up a showdown of epic proportions.

The X-Men have succeeded where Xavier had failed. They have brought back Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force! In the former White Hot Room of Mutant Afterlife, Jean has emerged. A conversation is had between Jean the powerful entity. With the souls of every mutant feeding the fire, They head to space merged with a mission. Defeat Enigma or die trying.

Meanwhile, the mutants on Earth celebrate their win over Nimrod. However, there is an apprehensive voice looming. Mr. Sinister asks Destiny if it is truly over. Her reply doesn’t support positivity. She simply doesn’t tell him what she sees.

Readers watch as Phoenix flies into space for the confrontation. Enigma is waiting with all the other Dominions as backup. This truly has the “heavyweight title fight” feel the story deserves. An unforeseen play happens that causes Enigma to run away.

This leads back to the two that started the Krakoan Era in the first place: Charles Xavier and Moira. Their conversation in present time goes back to the moment on the park bench where Xavier was shown the future. It is poetic that all things come full circle.

From here, choices are made with direct impact. The fallout leads to a heroic moment that lends itself to the fight. Nothing is held back. Once the smoke clears, readers know how the future is going to play out. They also are left with a stunning ending arc. One era has ended forever and another begins.

Gillen constructs a steady end to one of comics’ biggest eras. Seeing Phoenix being the last hope for Mutants feels as a metaphor for the return of Mutants back to the classic X-Men era. While ambitious, seeing mutants driven in a more heroic stance proves feels more like the characters we all became fans off.

The writing dives into the guilt and regret of Xavier. This proves to be a strong element. Hearing his recollection of events defines how far things have come and gone. This leads into a defining moment which inspires the final stand. Its’ fallout leaves no confusion on where events now lead. It is exactly what you are looking for to conclude this chapter with.

Vecchio goes big with many full or near full page images for this issue. It helps create that “big fight feel” previously eluded to. From Enigma’s initial encounter with Phoenix to the eventual face-off later, the pages are bold and direct of how powerful these two beings are. The Jean proclamation of “We’re The X-men” is an absolute defining image for this conclusion.

Xavier’s recollection of events also stands out. The use of panels is creative in explaining his thoughts. It’s a great use of historic retelling at its core. Xavier’s final moments in the chapter will also stand out. The series of panels hold nothing back as his future is clarified for the audience. This will be a moment that fans will have much to say about.

FINAL SCORE: 9.7

The end of the Krakoan Era has arrived in grand fashion. Gillen pens a tale of reflection and fearlessness with Mutantkind’s fate hanging in the balance. Vecchio, Curiel and Cowles provide the larger than life visuals to bring this era of time to a thunderous close. This will be one story not to miss!

The chapter opens with a rooftop meeting. On one side is Gotham City’s feared protector, Batman. Standing across from him is the Penguin himself. The narration walks readers through Batman’s assessment of the current situation. Who would have thought so much centered around asking for a match to light a cigarette.

Meanwhile, Addie and Aiden Cobblepot are dealing with an Intergang representative from Metropolis. Shipments haven’t been making their deliveries. This proves to be a problem for the family business. Readers see who is responsible for the derailment of product: Batman.

All the while, Penguin is watching events unfold. How does Oswald see things going from here. Readers watch as tensions become even higher as the attack on Cobblepot’s children intensifies. This builds towards a moment that cements who is the heir to the throne of Gotham. It defines what many have suspected for quite some time. Events spirals into a desperate play by one figure. A parting image raises more questions as the battle of legacy rages onward.

King dives into the unique perspectives of the characters at play. Allowing their narrations to dominate most pages helps with this chapter. Giving that insight to the reader only amplifies what’s unfolding even more. This plays heavily into arguably the breakout character of this issue: Addie Cobblepot.

King’s writing depicts her as ruthless as her father. Through the course of the issue, she slowly starts breaking from the pressure of her father’s plans. This leads to a confrontation where it becomes clear she’s already lost her claim to the throne.

Oswald’s quiet scheming takes a grander role as events unfold. King slows down the pace to build up the eventual move. Once Penguin strikes, the moment hits readers with full force. The cutting dialogue given leaves a chilling reality in its wake. Oswald Cobblepot is back with a vengeance.

De Latorre and Maiolo blend in themes of defiance and mystery throughout the issue. The rooftop scene is capped off with a well paced full page of Batman and Penguin talking The frustration and rage on Addie’s face tells a bigger story as her grasp if the city slips. Her conversations with Oswald and Aiden conveys that point with ease. Knowing what is looming, readers bear witness to her slow breakdown.

However, the pages that will be most talked about are Oswald’s “message” to Aiden. The two page splash makes a very loud statement. It holds nothing back as Oswald makes a bold announcement with his actions. The imagery around this section holds nothing back. There’s no question about what unfolds. A play is made that the city may not be ready for. This spells nothing but win for the audience watching Gotham pushed to its edge.

With multiple narration leading the way, Oswald Cobblepot’s family feud approaches its climatic end. King’s creative approach sells the dark times ahead with strong writing. De Latorre and Maiolo pace out the drama with exceptional images. Gotham had better brace for what’s coming next!

BLOOD SQUAD SEVEN #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

BLOOD SQUAD SEVEN #1 by Joe Casey, Paul Fry, Francesco Segala, Gloria Martinelli and Rus Wooton spinds out of the pages of Dutch. It throws a unique concept to readers. Is a team 30 years removed still relevant today?

BLOOD SQUAD SEVEN #1 by Joe Casey, Paul Fry, Francesco Segala, Gloria Martinelli and Rus Wooton (Image Comics)

Casey dives into the nostalgia of the era for a solid debut. Seeing how a former member is trying to recapture and rebuild the past makes for some interesting dynamics. Erica’s relationship with her daughter showcases the times have changed. “Heroes as Celebrites” with time passed leads to a theme of perception versus reality. The chapter builds towards blurring the lines. This becomes very evident with the closing moments. Seeing what unfolds there, the struggle to combat public opinion may be more challenging than it’s worth.

The art gives readers much of the throwback feel of early Image books. The full page splash of one “hero” flying through the violent destruction kicks off a sense of direction. Erica’s demeanor through pitching the team concept ranges from frustration to calm optimism. Ripcord’s violence is direct and blunt. The imagery holds nothing back when he is on page. The homages to Youngblood amongst other books adds a nice nostalgia break to the more serious tone of the series.

With the theme of Perception vs. Reality, Blood Squad Seven leaves an impression on fans with its’ throwback concept. Casey delves into the past era with solid writing. Fry and Segala present the ultra violence and mystique of the past with images that will have readers talking. This will be one to keep an eye out for on NCBD.

Nimrod and Orchis are on the brink of victory. With Sentinel City poised to strike, there is little hope for mutantkind to survive. Times are so dire that Charles Xavier tries cutting a deal to work for Orchis to save the surviving mutants. Scott Summers and company don’t buy into this arrangement. The X-Men are prepared to fight to the end to stop Nimrod, even if it means they don’t survive the outcome.

They have bought some time as the S.W.O.R.D. space station was teleported into Sentinel City. It dealt a blow but wasn’t enough. Cyclops and Nightcrawler assess the situation. Unfortunately, Colossus is knocked into space. This leaves Cyclops alone to face off with a waiting Nimrod!

Meanwhile, Rogue and Kwannon make a play to stop Omega Sentinel. Their attack neutralizes the threat also known as Karima. Its resolution leaves one obstacle handled but victory is far from reachable.

Readers watch as Nimrod unleashes a full attack on the X-Men. For being a perfect sentinel, there is one variable it didn’t comprehend. In their darkest hour, a force enters the battle. It is a showdown that will have fans on their feet.

The outcome is pure box office excitement! It is one fans are sure to be pleased with. The following scenario sets forth a new path. As big of a battle this was, there might be a larger one at hand. The final image calls forth a return that may be the deciding factor of mutantkind’s fate! With two parts left, anything is possible from here!

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X #5 by Gerry Duggan, Lucas Werneck, Stefano Caselli, Bryan Valenza, and Travis Lanham (Marvel Entertainment) cover: Carlos Gómez

Duggan delivers on an action packed conclusion to this series. From the initial onset, the stakes felt astronomical. Cyclops leading the charge was a perfect choice for the final battle with Nimrod. Even through the course of the battle, the writing reflected the will to survive in Scott Summers. The defiant confidence shined. These also carried through with the rest of the X-Men. It captured the themes of what makes this group so special.

One member steals the show in this chapter. After making a grand entrance, the conflict changes gears. It is a game changing moment that the others feed off of looking for strength. This builds towards a dramatic end of battle. The fallout shifts gears back to Cyclops. Knowing his legacy with the group, it is only fitting that he is the one standing in the end pushing to end this era once and for all.

Werneck and Caselli give fans much to rave about in the finale. The showdown with Omega Sentinel conveys big emotion in Rogue and Kwannon. The broken state of Karima sets the pace for what lies ahead with Nimrod. The anger of Cyclops plays off the arrogance of Nimrod very well.

Fans get a full page entrance for the game-changer in this conflict. The reactions from the other mutants resonates with fans. The images mirror the growing feeling of hope as their battle rages onward. Each panel speaks volumes of the impact of the battle. This leads into a strong ending panel of the victor. The art team ties up events with a full page montage that cements the key factor in bringing this all to an end.

Epic is the only proper way to describe the final showdown of Nimrod and the Children of the Atom. Duggan excels the pace to craft frantic excitement in the battle fans have been waiting for. The art team gift readers with big action and larger emotional impacts as the Krokoan Era winds down.

In space, everyone can hear a punch. Lobo and Superman are throwing down at the Hardcore station. General Chacal offered Lobo to be the new leader of his army of Czarnians. To lock up the “House of Lobo”, The Main Man must take out Superman. Let the fight begin!

During their brawl, Supes tries reasoning with Lobo. He brings up how Chacal is using him. Lobo denies the claims. In this moment, Chacal captures Superman. Chacal gives Superman some fire as a slip of the tongue proves Superman was right. The group brings Superman right to Brainiac’s ship.

On board, Lex Luthor and Supergirl are on the run in Colu, the home city of Brainiac (long thought destroyed). While evading detection, Luthor answers a question looming: Why was he working with Brainiac. The answer isn’t cut and dry, but it’s a Lex answer. An unlikely hero jumps into their path to help save them for now, but is it too late?

The closing moments packs quite the impact. Readers will be in shock and awe of what Brainiac has done. A new factor has entered this equation. It makes an immediate impact, leaving any witnesses knowing that their end is near. Once fans see that final page, there is no doubt events went from bad to worse for Superman.

The true emergence of Evil. Williamson does an excellent build towards Brainiac’s reveal. The throwdown with Lobo and Superman plays right into the manipulations theme of this event. Chacal’s scheming his its mark. The result becomes more than is bargained for. This is amplified by the conversation with Luthor and Supergirl.

Seeing Lex appear to be concerned for Brainiac’s plans speaks volumes. It all combines for a shocking final act. Once the new entity makes their presence known, the writing leaves no pause for their arrival. It is a brutal conclusion mixed with shocking reactions. Fans will be on edge until the next chapter drops.

The art team gifts readers with gigantic images throughout this issue. Explosive two page splashes back to back sets the Superman and Lobo fight into high gear. It is balanced with the facial reactions of Luthor. While running from Brainiac’s forces, the emotions range from worried to concerned.

Arguably the issue’s stongest work is the closing act. Another two page full splash starts Brainiac’s final plans. The result is treated with a dynamic two page spread. It clearly delivers on the danger and carnage Brainiac has just unleashed. The chapter is perfectly capped off with a full page visual that leaves a bold statement until the “House of Brainiac” resumes.

With deceptions abound, Superman finds himself in front of a new evil that he might not be able to stop. Williamson constructs an incredible read with action and answers filling the bill. The art team elevates the conflicts and challenges to new levels. A new threat to the DCU has arrived and fans might not be ready for what’s next!

The chapter begins in present time with Scott narrating this story to a mysterious figure.

In the past, the relationship between Alan Scott and Vladimir Sokov aka John Ladd is extremely complex. Sokov had been working as a spy. Infused with the powers of a Red Lantern, Sokov has turned his attention to eliminate his former lover.

Plans have not gone as expected. Scott has bested Sokov through all the personal attacks. Unfortunately, this has not won victory. The Crimson Host has arrived to take care of Sokov and Scott. Luckily, Scott has some powerful friends watching his back: the JSA!

The action starts fast as both group throw down. Sokov’s powers are fading fast without a recharge. Scott is doing all he can to fend off the threat. However, Major Blaze halts his progress. Sokov jumps in for the safe but it’s not enough. The powerful figure starts unloading on Sokov and kills him in the process!

Readers watch as the emotions pour out of Scott. The rage is unleashed. Is it enough? A shocking event occurs that enters the battlefield. Its’ result is one that will catch readers off-guard. This sends the story into a more personal reaction as Scott comes to grips with what just transpired. It closes one area but leads to a very strong final act.

After the events that Scott has had to endure, there is still one enemy that he must face alone. The closing pages set that last conflict up with a defiant Scott refusing to back down. Its’ epilogue completes a soul’s journey into becoming what many have seen all along: Scott as a hero and a symbol of strength.

Sheridan leaves this point of Scott’s life with validation and grace. The conflict with Sokov has had many layers involved. With their last stand, the writing leans into Scott’s feelings and pits them against his duties. The results leave Scott in a much stronger place heading into the close.

The issue’s most powerful moment is one addressing Scott’s conflict with society. Scott handles this issue with powerful words. The dialogue reinforces the emergence of Scott as more than just a hero. Standing up for who is without fear is the most heroic action he can ever take. This leads to a revelation of who’s listening to the story that will please fans. It is a moment that will connect with many. As this unfolds, the closing dialogue solidifies what everyone has seen in this entire series: the emergence of unbreakable will through adversity.

Tormey, Herms, Tarragona and Gattoni waste no pages gifting the action to readers. There’s an incredible two page splash to open up events. The battle with Sokov and Blaze screams of intensity and anger. This is reflected in Scott’s powers unleashed in a half page set-up. Its’ ending is mixed with shorter panels and the former lovers understand the end has arrived.

Panels are also gifted with the pure emotional reactions of Scott’s heart breaking and rebuilding itself. Once the reveal of the figure in present time is completed, the images shine with the release of the building drama. The closing pages tie up loose ends very well. This is all topped off with a full page visual that caps off the epic saga in solid fashion.

What makes a hero? That question is definitively answered in this final chapter. Sheridan’s superb writing invokes the grit and determination of Scott’s unbreakable will. Tormey, Herms, Tarragona and Gattoni flood the pages with exciting imagery. Readers will leave knowing no power is greater than love.

With the return of Red Dagger, Kamala’s life becomes more complicated. Throughout the seriousness of Orchis’ attack, the writing keeps things centered around young love and her dealing with her new status quo. The action comes into play quickly in the middle act. Vellani and Pirzada playing off the notion of the Five is a solid plot theme in describing the familiar faces that are popping up.

Seeing the true villain’s plans in motion is an easy connection for readers. With Kamala being involved in the Mutant issues of the current MCU, the notion of Orchis involvement helps. It brings Kamala in a closer connection to Mutant affairs. The closing page might have something to say about that as Kamala’s dream escape crashes back to reality.

The art by Godlewski and Arciniega reflects the ever optimistic title hero. Red Dagger’s introduction brings up images of youthful hope and romance. It serves to counter the heavier matter of the Mutant hunting going on. The introduction of “zombie” Cyclops is gifted a half page image. Seeing the X-Man in this state makes for a loud, positive visual. This builds up for more as the book progresses. Readers will have a big surprise waiting for them on the final page. it is one that should have more fans talking about what is unfolding here.

With an old friend stopping by, Kamala Khan’s world gets turned upside down. The writing brings out the best of Kamala’s personality. Paired with solid imagery depicting action and a blossoming romance, fans will have much to be invested in. The final page should have some readers buzzing with who stops by. The chapter begins with Batman being held prisoner in a uniquely familiar set-up. It’s a Bat cave, but not his cave. Dr. Kirk Langstrom is the landlord here. Man-Bat is taking his victory lap as Batman assesses the changes since Langstrom’s heroic times.

Meanwhile, Damian and Flatline have entered into a dangerous location: High School. Damian fully believes that Principal Stone is his old trainer from the League of Assassins. Options are limited to get Stone away from the other students. Drastic times call for drastic measures. A fight ensues but not one readers might immediately think.

This leads to a showdown building for a few issues now. Is Principal Stone Mistress Harsh? Shish? Or someone else? The answer starts a domino effect that draws out another big reveal. Readers will have much to break down as things come into focus.

Its’ fallout sends the young hero on a new path. The closing pages builds the danger as Damian closes in on his fathers whereabouts. Once arriving, it is clear to see he has more than he bargained for. The final image speaks volumes as readers brace for what’s coming next.

Williamson gifts a healthy portion of this issue to Damian’s story. The high school times have been a refreshing break from the other Bat books. Seeing Damian actually be a kid instead of Robin will win over readers. The showdowns unfolding clear up some lingering plot points. The pacing keeps events moving without lingering too long for the fallout. Once the final act being, writing hits its’ main points while bowing out on a sold end note for now.

Art duties are spilt with a returning Di Meo and Niro heading up the Batman areas. The introduction to the Bat-Cave 2.0 is presented with an excellent two-page splash. Man-Bat’s gloating comes off as both menacing and leveling up from where he’s been. This is complemented later in the book with another strong two-page spread.

Čižmešija and Lokus tackle the high school. Spotlighting Damian being young and foolish works to kick his story into high gear. The Shush segments get a two page splash that will answer a few points for fans. The art brings out the best of Damian’s reactions to news as he heads into the action. The spilt art teams brought much for fans to be amped up for heading into the promising next chapter.

With Man-Bat nearing completion of his plans, Damian Wayne’s luck appears to be turning with this latest chapter. Williamson gifts fans payoffs for certain plot points with the writing. The art teams split duties to give Batman and Robin their own distinct look before closing with a stand-of final page. This isn’t your average Bat book and that’s a big win for fans.

Lex Luthor and Brainiac converse over Brainiac’s true plans. The conversation is tense with Brainiac not divulging a great deal. Luthor switches topics to the Czarnian role in this scheme. Brainiac stays tight lipped as he knows a fight is about to happen.

The story switches to Superman and Lobo. The unlikely duo is in hot pursuit of the missing Super family members. In their way is the army of Czarnians Brainiac has unleashed. General Chacal seems to have under-estimated the Man of Steel as the fighing unfolds. Destroying their space hogs, the pair escapes.

Meanwhile, Supergirl and Conner Kent have escaped from Brainiac’s holding cell. Being miniature size doesn’t help their cause. Getting some unlikely help, the pair returns to normal size after dodging danger. With a small team in place, they make a run to take over the ship. This fails to succeed as Brainiac confronts them. With prisoners back in control, the unthinkable is revealed.

Readers watch as Brainiac reveals a secret that sends shockwaves. What has the collector of worlds been working on? As for our heroes, the unlikely duo is halted in their travels. A proposal is made that might be the breaking point of Superman and Lobo’s team-up. With a definitive final panel, the direction of events has drastically changed.

There is also a back-up story by Williamson, Mirko Colak, Mike Spicer, and Sharpe that dives into a forgotten Brainiac: Vril Dox of L.E.G.I.ON. Fame.

Williamson plays into the uneasiness between the Main Man and Man Of Steel. At the first exposure, they are working in unison. Lobo’s influence is starting to grow on Superman with his actions. This carries through on their trek to find Brainiac. Once readers think there is a level of loyalty, the writing reflects how this pair is a ticking timebomb from exploding. Once the new offer is made, the match becomes lit.

Brainiac’s time is centered around his goal. The reveal is a monster one knowing the character. Williamson almost makes it a sympathetic gesture by the collector of Worlds. This becomes quickly dismayed as the heroes ignore the reason and continue their fight. The dialogue shows Brainiac back to full form and this spells nothing but a win for readers.

Sandoval and Mendonca welcome in the action with a fantastic two page full splash. Lobo’s reaction to Superman calling the shots makes for a fun break in the story. Readers see this is short lived later in the book. The art captures the Czarnians deviousness as they confront the pair. The closing page tips off how fast things have broken down. It’s a great parting moment to usher in the next chapter.

Supergirl’s mission also delivers on strong panels. The face off with the Doomsday Wolves exemplifies the danger she and Connor wind up in. The return to form is given a solid near full page moment. Its’ following imagery spotlights Brainiac’s reveal. The exposed secret feels like a big event due to the art. It’s a great compliment to the story as it causes a new direction to be taken.

DC’s current Odd Couple walks in thin ice as Brainiac reveals his master scheme in this chapter. Williamson brings out the humor and harsh reality with the writing. Sandoval, Mendonca and Sharpe balance out the big events with fantastic art. This crossover is heading into different routes so hop on board before it’s too late.

Johns brings out the multi-layers of Tariq Geiger to the fans' delight. The unlikely pairing of Nate the Nuclear Knight and Geiger gave a fun break from the darkness of the world around them. Seeing Nate try continuously to win over Geiger made for some entertaining moments. With the post-apocalypse comes new rules to live by. The adaptation of the pair to get by provides a very engaging tale with this chapter.

The conflict is everything a reader would want from a great story. It has action. It has Drama. Factor in a great twist and how can it go wrong? Johns pulls this off flawlessly. Seeing Geiger doing his best to avoid being a hero and failing never disappoints. The ending throws everything in motion for a new player to step into the light. It serves as a reminder that not every tale gets a happy ending. Excellent work!

Frank, Anderson and Leigh bring out the best in the new world of the Unnamed. Opening with a full page shot of Nate trying to secure food starts events off in a delightful manner. The outcome combines elements of fun and brooding to lead readers into the heart of the chapter. The odd couple's reactions to the events range from frustration to shame. It quickly establishes how different Nate and Geiger are, making their panel time more impactful.

The chase after the "criminal" is filled with bold action sequences. Images move swiftly with Geiger and Nate on the chase. It leads to an impressive two-page splash that signals Geiger is ready for action. There is no escaping this moment leading a new phase in the book. The glow of Geiger radiating off a mask makes for a great visual. Once readers head into the final panels, the art team leaves them in startling place as a new factor enters the world of Tariq Geiger.

The Unnamed's odd couple makes an impact with their latest adventure for Ghost Machine's founding character. Johns blends the darkness of the dreary landscape with slivers of heroic themes. Frank, Anderson and Leigh compose the thrilling and versatile imagery that continues to impact readers jumping into this series. There is no sophomore slump with this series!

The chapter begins with Damian Wayne checking in on his “father”. However, readers know all too well this is not Bruce Wayne. This is FAILSAFE, an unstoppable version of Batman with Zur-En-Arh as its’ personality.

Batman has cracked into every electronic device in Gotham City. This serves as fuel to his twisted version of protecting the citizens. Damian is all too excited to be reconnecting with his dad on their missons. The feelings aren’t mutual as Failsafe brushes them off. Something has drawn the machines attention away….

Readers find out that the reason is Gotham’s new Police Commissioner. His name is VANDAL SAVAGE! Savage addresses the city. A protester takes aim and fires a gunshot. Batman jumps in front and subdues the attacker. Savage and Batman have a public stand-off with the world watching.

One of those people: Amanda Waller. Waller sees the big picture. How does this Batman fit into her plans? And what of Bruce Wayne? On the run and outmatched by his own creation, Wayne takes things back to basics as he tries reclaiming his identity.

Wayne gets a familiar assistant to help on his new plan. Timing couldn’t be better. Waller is making moves that only spell disaster for Batman. With Failsafe growing its’ strength every day, the final image gives some hope that all might not be lost. Buckle in as things are about to get moving very, very fast.

BATMAN #147 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles (backup story: Zdarsky, Cowles, Miguel Mendonca and Eren Angiolini) - DC COMICS

Zdarsky juggles around many multiple personalities in this chapter. The addition of Amanda Waller elevates Failsafe’s impact on Gotham. Knowing that “Absolute Power” is a short time away, their conversation comes off as a moment that lights the match for a bigger explosion. Failsafe’s reactions to their talk reflects Batman’s demeanor which is no stranger to Waller. How this ultimately plays out should be exciting.

Bruce’s portion of the story tells a few themes. The overall isolation he puts himself through carries a heavy weight. Seeing the reluctance for help ties back into how Bats feels he is the only option to save the day. Zdarsky provides a needed reset with who joins Bat’s cause. Once that information sinks in, the art team instantly switches his emotions from happy to rageful. Failsafe provides an introduction to a new character via a bold full page debut.

Bruce is also displaying his emotions of doubt with a much-needed talk. The panels mirror the realization of what he has done. It also gives readers a sense that he Can’t win this fight. However, their fears are put to ease with the closing page. The full image sets the tone for what’s coming next with a strong mic drop moment.

With Gotham and his confidence slipping further away, Bruce Wayne gets some much needed help to reclaim his city and identity. Zdarsky sets up some unique pairings with the writing. Pepose wastes no time hitting the ground running with the action. Keeping the story centered around Jan and Jace made for a solid play. It allowed the title character to be a looming presence. The kids’ fight for survival is only amplified by this technique.

Readers watch as the classic characters get a revision with a darker overtone. The pacing allows for Space Ghost to flourish for a new audience. Each time he appears, it gives a sense of importance and awe. This is especially true with the final page. Events conclude with a thunderous exclamation point as a hero has emerged through chaos to save the day.

Lau’s imagery crafts a more serious feel to the adventure at hand. The action sequences pop off the page. It allows readers to get a sense of what the hero is unleashing on the bad guys.

The initial appearance of Space Ghost is greeted with a half page panel worthy of the legend. Charles Xavier has crossed a line. After failing to kill Moira McTaggert in the past, Xavier has been exposed as a traitor. Xavier kills Rachel Summers. Rasputin IV goes on the offensive with revenge on the mind. Xavier is cutting a deal with Mother Righteous about handling his X-Men.

Once dealing with Rasputin, Xavier and Righteous appear to be at a standstill. Xavier knows Righteous is depowered. Before she has a chance to react, Xavier initiates another double cross of his own. Mother Righteous is taken out. It is revealed that Xavier is using Righteous as a bargaining chip. The other half of the deal? That goes through Omega Sentinel!

Readers watch as Xavier grasps for anything to keep his Krakoan dream alive. How far is the Professor willing to go? As for the X-Men, there’s still a few tricks left up their sleeves. A resurrection takes place that could be the tipping point in the fight. It all builds towards a final sequence that sparks a match to burn the whole world down. Everything is drawing together to leave a crushing finale in Krakoa’s final hours.

Gillen gives X-fans plenty to talk about with this chapter. Xavier is written as a shattered soul. The lengths he goes to borderlines on insanity and desperation. The conversations and deals made with Omega Sentinel reflect his desperation as his dream died in front of his eyes.

Meanwhile, the last remaining X-Men show the complexity of their next moves. Gillen sets up a few surprises in the latter half that will catch some readers off guard. With the multi-layered levels at play, pacing keeps things moving towards a strong close. It’s been a solid run thus far and looks to cash in big at the conclusion.

Silva and Curiel hit the ground running with a shocking first page. Seeing Xavier’s actions and consequences kick events off was a big move with a near full page panel. This leads into a wide array of Xavier’s emotional expressions as his plans start dwindling away. The final page slowly teases a new factor into the story that will only ignite fans interest down the home stretch. There’s much to enjoy from this.

With deception in the air, the X-Men scramble to stop their biggest threat. Gillen balances the action and drama with sharp writing. Silva and Curiel level up the visuals, presenting many moments for fans to enjoy as Krakoan time slowly slips away.

THE PENGUIN #9 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we are heading into the closing chapters of Oswald Cobblepot’s return to Gotham. It was recently announced that the DC Comics series will be concluding at issue #12. Until then, the Gotham Underworld has been put on notice. The Penguin is back and business is about to pick up.

This chapter begins with two thugs setting a bomb. As they work away, the narration eludes to someone overseeing the bigger picture. The bomb explodes. The building was the Martha Wayne day Care Center. The voice: Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin.

The story shifts to a rooftop. Batman is shaking down Cobblepot for information. With twelve bombings happing in his city, Batman isn’t letting this slide. An ultimatum is given. Cobblepot obliges. Two names are given. They are Aiden* and Addison Cobblepot!

Readers watch as the Penguin needs to find a way to stay off Batman’s radar to handle his children personally. Plus, what does Lisa St. Claire have up her sleeve? If that last name sounds familiar to Bat fans, it should.

With the drama unfolding, the closing moments throw everything into flux. A new player is brought into the story. Their effect on Oswalt speaks volumes as the final page concludes events with a loud statement.

King leans heavily into the family dynamic of the Penguin and his children. The writing is fearless as Oswalt doesn't hesitate to assert himself into his drama while showing other sides of his characters. the standout player in this issue is Lisa St. Claire. With no pause, her scheming jumps out to readers amongst others. Seeing Batman frustrated with the case events in another big moment. This builds up to a strong final act that is sure to have a huge payout next issue.

De latorre and Maiolo keep the grittiness of Gotham front and center while the drama builds. The rooftop images of Batman and Penguin keep the intensity growing. It leads to a full page panel that sets the tone for the remainder of the book.

Batman’s time in the book felt impactful with each panel. His reactions to Cobblepot’s case carried heavy weight. The moments with Bats and Commissioner Gordon show the ware the Penguin’s family actions are taking. It leads to an excellent shot of Batman heading right into the belly of the beast: the Iceberg Lounge. With images like this, the conclusion will be one fans won’t forget anytime soon.

It’s a family affair as The Penguin attempts to reclaim his throne. King sets the stage for an explosive confrontation with the writing. De Latorre, Maiolo and Cowles provide the brooding backdrop to the big throwdown. Fans won’t want to miss how this all plays out.

In two issues, Phillips has crafted an intense world of espionage. The pacing moves things right along while keeping readers locked in. The back and forth of Clint and Natasha breaks up the seriousness of actions nicely. The dynamic of Natasha's symbiote is a new factor that leads to some memorable sequences. It keeps building up suspense of what its' true motives are. Does it support the pair's friendship or does it want to eliminate Clint altogether?

The latter portion of the chapter dives very far back into their past. Seeing their bond form and still hold up to the present is a big win for fans. It also adds more danger to the actions and fallout that jeopardizes everything. Factor in some more surprises in the final moments and this series just keeps getting better and better.

The art reflects Clint and Natasha's solid foundation of their friendship. The slower moments in Madripoor give insight to their casual comfortability discussing events. This all changes with one quiet action. The near full page image speaks volumes. This leads to a wonderful full page full spread of Natasha in action. The fighting panels flow very smoothly until the resolution connects.

In these instances, the art locks in on Natasha's reactions and how she tries keeping things level until she gets a reaction. This leads into the final moments where a reveal is gifted with a full page foreshadowing. Once this portion revs up, it motors until the closing image. A full reveal of a character is constructed. This leaves readers much to ponder until the next chapter drops.

FINAL POINT: 8.7

Within two issues, the latest chapter in the lives of Clint Barton and Natasha Rominov spiral out of control. Led by Phillips superb writing, the action moves without remorse as the drama unfolds. The art team deliver on creating a world of danger amongst an emotional bond. You absolutely want to have this series on your radar.

While in pursuit of Man-Bat, The dynamic duo has some company crash their investigation. Flatline, who has a history with Damian Wayne has arrived in Gotham. Her mission is to find her missing sister Mila. Batman gives the go ahead for Damian to help her.

In his absence, an unlikely figure enters the equation. Shush has been helping Man-Bat on his latest caper. It appears as she’s changed sides. She approaches Batman with an offer he might not be able to turn down.

This issue begins with a flashback of Mila telling her story. Readers find out that she’s not exactly lost. Mila has taken up the family business of crime. This doesn’t sit well with Robin. However, Flatline proves “blood is thicker than water.” Flatline sets up the distraction allowing Mila to escape.

Meanwhile, Batman is listening to Shush’s pitch for teaming up. The only question is that of trust. Can Batman really side with someone who’s identity reflects a dangerous rogue. Shush gives slight insight as she leads Batman into a possible break in the case. After they arrive, it seems as their luck may have run out.

How does events play for both heroes? Being split away, each has their own troubles to deal with. The action doesn’t break from its standard as conflicts arise. Once the fallout begins, it leaves one hero with an unlikely partner to pick up the pieces of the case.

Williamson breaks the issue into two very separate tales. The Flatline story gives fans a showcase into Damian that we rarely see. The emotional reactions to Flatline’s actions jump out. Seeing the usual focused Robin acting a tad reckless was a solid twist. Heading into the close, it will be a fun dynamic to see where things go for Damian form here.

As for Bats, its’ business as usual. Shush is written as a character of mystery. She doesn’t stray too far off the path. Seeing her drama play out with Man-Bat kept readers waiting to see her true motives. The ending is a bit of a surprise that will only have fans talking until the next chapter.

Čižmešija and Lokus step in for art duties with this issue. The opening moment with Batman and Shush is given a near two full page spread. It gives the moment weight as the sensing of motives play out. The same can be said for the Man-Bat appearances. The panels express the villain’s rage with Batman closing in.

The Robin/Flatline saga is gifted strong action panels. One scenario is with Robin and his mobile. The pace rushes through the art as the conclusion is sudden. It leads into more personal moments later heading towards the closing pages. The parting shot sets up a shift in events that will be ones fans will want to keep an eye on.

With the appearance of Flatline, the dynamic duo is split from their case. Williamson mixes in big drama with exciting moments to move events along. Čižmešija, Lokus and Wands give both stories their own distinct looks with distinct images showcasing both leads. The conclusion will be one that leaves doors open to for readers to draw their own clues to where things head from here. Keep an eye out for this one on NCBD.
