Even with a brief skirmish, the overtones of something more dangerous can’t be denied.

The story shifts gears with a surprise guest star. Seeing Jack Ryder (and his alter ego) interject an unpredictability into the standard build. Events shift into a more traditional setting. Slott’s set-up showcases an insight into Superman’s “Golden era”. Readers watch as the new dynamic looks as a blessing in the conflict. The narrative quickly changes with a random action. From here, the dominos start falling around Supes. it leaves many questions moving forward. Judging by the closing page, time is not looking like it’s on his side.

Albuquerque & Maiolo opens up with the El Caldero unveiling. There’s a sense of nobility hovering around Castilho. The art carries him with that stance while Lane digs into the truth. The writing captures the innocence of Clark’s wonder. Leaving Smallville and actually being a teen puts a strain on his heroics. The dialogue between the Kents and him translates as normal family moments. Readers watch as his wonder is shaken up by a villain. It results in a tough, but needed call. The writing gives the conflict a vintage feel. This spins into a very notable fallout. Seeing a boy fly and stop a villain draws many eyes. Judging by who is featured, making the right choice may lead to wrong consequences.

This sense of violent justice proves to have its flaws. Batman’s ideology of vengeance is not being received. The brash response leads into a dangerous confrontation. Its’ fallout lights an even greater explosion to come.

Readers watch as Alfred weighs in on the situation. The mood is tense as Batman refuses to see the error in his Robin choice. It is an interesting take readers see unfold. Some might think it’s just because batman doesn’t want to be wrong. This spirals into a subtle moment before launching into the end. It almost feels full circle with the dialogue. The scenes play into Todd’s rage heavily here. It results in a shocking turn to throw everything in flux. Where things go from here is wide open so brace for the journey.

Nguyen adds a new dynamic to the duo with the coloring for the issue. The watercolor style shines in the two page chase splash. Throughout the sequence, Todd’s grimace never leaves his face. They have resulted in some of the best Batman stories in recent memory. It also makes the case for DARK PATTERNS being “the Best Batman series” currently on sale. Now at the halfway point, a new case is on the horizon.

This leads into his next case. The writing unveils a new side of Gotham. Watters portrays the Rookery as the worst part of the city. Seeing the crime at hand, there’s little argument to that statement.

Events take a turn when Batman gets help from his most trusted ally. Seeing Alfred get a major spot in the story helps connecting points. The writing ties in a past familiar group into this present moment. It results into a question of procedure. Adding this element in play showcases the relatively new hero naivety. It results in a gauntlet being thrown down in the close. Batman speaks his case. Judging by the last page, it may have fallen on deaf ears.

Sherman and Farrell continue to display fantastic art in this series. The opening page is a perfect start for the reflective monologue. Panel structure allows a broad view of Wayne’s assessment. It leads into a strong full page image of Wayne looking over the city.

The Rookery comes across as stated in the book: Hell on Earth. With the panel structures, the laundromat discovery hits hard. The body discovery is horrific and sets the pace for the remainder of the book. Alfred’s breakdown of the past transitions events superbly. It will connect the points with the audience before the closing pages. Panel breakdown of stopping an attacker tells a story all its own. This moves to a glimpse of the daunting task at hand. Readers can’t help but be excited to see where things go from the last page.

A dive into Gotham’s past appears to test Batman’s resolve in his latest throwback case. Watters pens a dynamic start with excellent writing. Sherman and Farrell keep raising the levels with every image on page. This series never ceases in setting a high bar of storytelling.

In one move, he ends a peace treaty for more war. The writing brushes it off as an afterthought. How does this version of Batman stand a chance here?

The writing shows how he is handling a close friend’s disappearance. It is a brutal showcase of how Wayne barely holds his rage together. Snyder also quickly reveals a key player in the Bat-Universe. How said person will factor in will be fun to watch. It ‘s not the only new/old face appearing here. Once the mission becomes clear, there is no turning back on direction. The flashback moments solidify the hurt Wayne is feeling. This spirals into more reveals and a terrifying close. The last page is going to evoke a reaction out of readers that won’t be silenced anytime soon.

Dragotta returns after a two issue break and swings for the fences. Bane’s introduction is haunting and ultra brutal. One small panel speaks volumes onto the lengths he is willing to go. It carries a certain aura of fear. This never leaves his panels as events shift to Gotham City. Once here, readers are caught up quickly on the state of Bruce Wayne.

The violent reactions to his friends disappearance refuse to leave readers. It shows how broken he is There’s no comparison to the fragile mental state. The interactions with his friends is case in point. An angry outburst drives home Wayne’s pain. Readers see how this pushes his investigation further. A full page image unveils a hidden secret of the new Absilute world. There’s little time to process it as the closing takes hold. The art is unforgiving in the action. This is drilled home in the final page. A full page image establishes true fear as an absolute statement is made for the future of Gotham.

A classic rogue’s absolute debut checks all the boxes on a magnificent chapter. Snyder unloads the true fear of Bane with the writing. Dragotta unleashes a furious look at the villain’s instant impact. No one in the Absolute Universe may be safe .

He’s accompanied by another classic DC World War hero. With the solid lead-in, the action starts hot and heavy. It’s everything you want in a big era fight. This segways into a more closed face-off between good and evil.

Having Wildcat and Hourman ruin Wotan’s plans is vintage JSA. Readers watch as both conflicts escalate quickly. The JSA’s battle takes a few turns. When Blitzkrieg’s side starts taking an advantage, the JSA doesn’t wait long for help. Another classic DCU team makes a bold entrance into the conflict. Readers will have much to cheer for within these pages. Conflicts resolve onto a pleasing manner. The calm doesn’t last long as the close begins. Once here, the dire situation of now takes hold. The audience will have many questions as the sinister plans of injustice look to take home victory. Vintage storytelling 101 within these pages.

Guidry steps in for art duties with this issue. The introduction of Rock and his partner are huge wins. The subtle panel ushers in the hero with quiet fanfare. This gives way to a huge full page action shot. Seeing the JSA take the fight t Blitzkrieg’s forces i sure to entertain.

A two page image bring Wotan and company into the spotlight. It is non stop action from this point. Readers watch as each side rallies for help. Both get near full page images. These are easily pivotal moments worthy of the big page time. Another full page image brings Dr. Fate into the conflict. The art fully encompasses this era when presenting it on page. Once in the closing pages, readers see the near full images spell out possible disaster. There is much for superhero fans to enjoy here.

The past adventures of the JSA get the knod for this current issue. Lemire masterfully weaves vintage storytelling into the past and present. Guidry and company craft a timeless feel to each page. With the team still reeling, how the JSA attempts to bounce back is up in the air.

SECRET SIX #4 (DC COMICS)

One would think that capturing Amanda Waller would unify some personalities. Someone never told Dreamer, Gossamer, Superman Jon Kent, Deadshot, Black Alice, & Catman. These six individuals are struggling not to kill each other, let alone find Waller.

After a lead takes them into the Club Checkmate, the six run into a “frienemy”. Former Secret Six member Banshee is now involved in Checkmate. She’s not happy to see her old running mates. Nothing bad should happen here, right?

SECRET SIX #4 by Nicole Maines, Cian Tormey, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands (DC COMICS) continues the search for an escaped Amanda Waller.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening now.

Maines wastes little time in bringing the action. Banshee has the volatile reunion with her former teammates. It does cause a few fractures in the group. Readers watch as some members are captures. Two in particular are not. this leads into the broken) heart of the chapter.

The long awaited back story between Catman and Deadshot comes to light. It gives a greater insight to the loyalty and love Catman has. Watching Deadshot play it off enhances Maines’ writing. It is clearly evident how well they work together as a team. This also plays into how devasting the turn Deadshot does in favor of Waller. There is no doubt of the hold Waller has on certain people Deadshot is no exception. The result is shocking but fitting. It also leads into a closing with more reveals. Just when you don’t think the situation can become more explosive, the final panel says it all.

Tormey joins Segovia and art duties for this chapter. The fight at the club proves chaotic as the Six are handled. When two escape the ruckus, they’re given a full page shot of their crash landing. It is easy to pick up on Catman’s growing rage. The close-ups of his face brew with anger as he recaps past events.

Segovia heads up the Madagascar portion. Catman’s raid of the compound is violent as needed. A half page image draws this out immediately. It’s complimented by Lawton’s smirking. The page set-up for Lawton’s betrayal is well done. It breaks up moments for building the shocking turn. Readers have little time to soak this all in. The final page has yet another big reveal to drop. A full page image reveals one more dangerous secret that can rip the group even further apart. How is this team ever going to find success at this rate?

OVERALL GRADE: 8.1

The truth behind a broken bond comes into the light with this chapter. Maines’ writing unveils Deadshot’s ultimate loyalty. The art brings a fair balance of action and drama to his issue. How the team responds to the last page reveal is literally anyone’s guess.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE ATOM PROJECT #6 (DC COMICS)

How can things go from Amanda Waller to worse for heroes? After “Absolute Power”, Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi have tried fixing the powers displacement. Captain Atom was used as a test subject until events shifted his thinking. The result caused a major rift between friends and the U.S. government.

Swooping in to pick the bones is Inferno. The group was revealed to be the LEGION OF DOOM*. With Choi and Captain Atom captured, the Legion has the cards in their favor. Can Palmer save the day or is the world truly doomed?

It results into a well-placed switch to his allies larger problems.

Seeing the Legion banter amongst themselves provides a few timeless moments. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to see the Joker with Bat Wings? It also demonstrates how their obsession for power ultimately corrupts. Readers watch as it makes way for a valiant escape with surprises galore. Once the conflict concludes, the writing starts sewing up loose ends. Dialogue doesn’t shy away from the acceptance of failure. It brings events full circle, esp. involving Palmer. The fallout leaves the door open with a new perspective on the project. One can bank this story might be the catalyst for something greater down the road for the heroes of the DCU.

Perkins and Lucas hone in on the wear the project has taken on Palmer. The frustration and failure pours from his face. It leaves the reader with a sense of his guilt. There is no time to dwell here as The Legion of Doom crash the pages. The half page image starts a debate which opens the door for a last ditch attempt to fight back.

Action starts kicking into high speed during this break. As more of the Legion jumps in, the art throws a new look into place. A half page panel brings a huge twist to the fight. Readers watch as the fight speeds up. Luthor’s overconfidence shines on a smaller panel. It mirrors what the Legion has sensed in their recent stories. With the new playing field, Aaron has re-introduced a classic villain superbly. The twisted version of an near-immortal shines with delight. Readers watch as the brutal fight with some Omega Men takes a vicious turn. It is unforgiving with the punishments and actions taken. Each word re-enforces the dark mantra taken towards the world. Knowing the opposition to this, the dialogue is only more fitting.

Once Superman makes the scene, he is given a bittersweet entrance. The writing reflects the sad changes to his childhood core. It spirals into his confrontation with Lazarus’ Lois Lane and Omega Man Jimmy Olsen. The dialogue keeps everyone at a healthy distance. Readers see this become the perfect opening for action. Aaron keeps up a fast pace as the conflict takes hold. There are quite a few curves thrown in. The closing pages wrap up events with an organic finish. It leaves readers in a place of tense waiting to see where things go from here. No better place to finish for now, but not for long.

Sandoval returns to art after a short hiatus. The opening battle is savage in its’ portrayal. A two page splash captures the intensity of the Lazarus boss unleashed. It concludes with a shocking series of panels. Readers will come away from this knowing the danger lying in wait.

Kal-El’s return home is met with a somber reunion. Knowing how things are different with the Kents, the art drills that home. This leads into the “Superman Trinity” meeting. Readers will be amped as they see Kal, Lois and Jimmy fend off the Peacemakers. Captain Smith’s return is graced via half page image. The showdown with Supes lives up to billing. Sandoval & Arreola throw in a monster change via half page. The art never slows down as fighting rages on. This pushes towards the closing pages. Only at the final stop does events wind down. The last panel says it all with the character’s eyes. There is uncertainty on where things go next which is a huge win.

Smallville becomes a warzone as Superman tries finding shelter from Lazarus’ raging storm. Aaron pens an action packed chapter with the writing. Sandoval returns to the art duties with magnificent images. The Man of Tomorrow continues to command the spotlight in an ever-imaginative new era.

As much as I’m hoping this story turns a corner, it still feels as it’s going in reverse. The partnership between Todd and Elloit seems very forced. If based on saving Todd’s life, the dialogue isn’t nailing that point. Seeing Batman deduct what is truly happening, the sotry feels more geared for bait and switch than anything.

There are some small bright spots. Armori and Silence both have solid action moments. Each are presented in a manner where it feels organic. Readers can get behind how these two have come to be. It is a good twist put into place. However, that’s where the good times sadly end. The Nightwing portion feels dislodged. Grayson’s run-in with Todd leaves readers wanting more. That is not the even most awkward moment of this issue. The close provides a cameo where Batman’s inner thought reflects the readers. Even the parting shot doesn’t have the shock factor the moment desperately needs.

Lee and Williams art is the only thing holding this issue upright. The two-page splash of Todd and Hush is impressive. It carries a certain edge to try building up. Batman makes his grand appearance via full page image. This sets up the flashback sequences nicely.

The other Bat-family members get a fair amount of page time. Riddler’s new look is very distinct. It helps to push Nightwing into the inevitable confrontation with Todd. The fight sequence with Armori and Silence are excellent. Readers watch as a two page spalsh welcomes in a few guests for the fight’s conclusion. Lee knows how to pull these pages off with finesse. The final page is a solid tease of the deadly cat-and-mouse game. If the lead-in was stronger, this would have more impact to leave on.

OVERALL GRADE: 6

Too many issues with Hush’s overall scheme hamper what should be a turning point in the saga. The writing feels as its’ missing key details to establish more with readers. Lee’s art continues to be the saving grace in this chapter. Unfortunately, its’ not enough to overcome the roadblocks set in place.

Seeing how easily the League is handled sends a shock to readers. Grodd’s narration is delivered with a calm chill. It helps cement the gravity of the fight. Even when there’s glimpses of hope, they are dashed quickly. This leads to a predictable yet justified turn of events.

No matter what wins this Legion has accomplished, the goal never changed. Grodd’s quest for power takes readers into an intriguing proposal. It doesn’t take long for the egos in this unit to finally become too big. The fallout allows for a well-timed distraction. This gives an unlikely hero a chance to mount a comeback. Pacing pushes all parties into a direct line of fire. What comes out in the end is a face-off that complicates matters even further. This isn’t a bad thing by any means. Waid has key players in place for what should be an epic conclusion of the crossover.

Moore and Bonvillain welcome readers i with a chaotic first page. It’s a classic superhero fight that conveys the desperate situation at hand. Even as the Elongated Man tried mounting a last ditch effort, the panels show how futile it is. Seeing how the heroes have been displaced strikes a chord. Readers can sense time is fading fast. There’s never a moment in this sequence that says otherwise.

Once the attention is thrown back on a victorious Legion, the art shows cracks forming. Grodd reveals his true intentions with a near full page. In the background, readers see one member mirroring the others thoughts. This leads into a breakdown of great proportions. All the while, one hero re-enters the conflict. The full page image shows how they might be the key to turning tables. Pacing picks up and shows the back and forth taking place. It leads to a show-stopping final page. There’s no way readers leave the full page shot not amped up for the finale.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

An unlikely source provides a much needed spark as “We Are Yesterday” winds down. Waid conducts a very strong build for the finale. Moore and Bonvillian unveil the unstable personalities vying for control. It all leads to a final stand that is sure to be one for the ages and beyond.

Seeing a possible redemption disappear burns any hope for a happy father-daughter bond. The writing pours with Lena’s rage. This boils over to her talk with Mercy Graves. There is no escaping her wrath. It is quite the difference from the somber tone with Lois Lane.

After losing her powers, the mood is that of grieving. Williamson covers up the true feelings until Lois breaks. This becomes a driving point when Supes confronts Lex. Knowing his back is against the wall, Luthor dangles possibilities. What happens next is a response to a deep played seed of the run. Readers have previous moments sprinkled in but none impactful like this event. It leads to an overall strong conclusion with many options left open.

Art duties are split throughout this issue. The initial tease of events by Barrows sets a very high bar. Seeing Superman unleashed via two page splash teases a wild scene. The emotions run high when Lena confronts her dad. Readers watch the many feelings of anger and sadness emerge. Even when page time turns to Lois Lane, there is a sense of hidden grief that can’t be denied.

The issue also features some side plots that can’t be ignored. Zod’s interlude teases a major problem in the future. The same can be said for Time Trapper and the Absolute LOSH. Ultimately, events come back to Lex and Clark. Once the rage is unleashed, a mid-page image unlocks the fury. This spills into a confrontation of masterminds via near full image. One more guest star makes a dramatic debut. Another great full page welcomes another combustible element into an already unstable situation.

Superman’s rage cannot be contained as his world comes down around him. Williamson’s writing brings out an intense fallout. The art team navigates through a wide cast of characters leading to an explosive conclusion. How things go from here is anyone’s guess.

Camp never shies away from the disturbing impact of the White Martian. With 24 homeless people lit on fire by 24 random strangers, Jones’ case is anything but ordinary. The initial banter with Dect. Mayweather leads into more shocking details. Seeing how the Martian is operating with Jones proves their uniqueness. Readers watch this unfold when suspects are questioned.

The telepathy at hand slowly peels back layers of the case. This does nothing to help with Jones’ home life. Camp shows the cracks forming in that foundation. It also verifies how much Jones has changed. In dealing with his new partner, there is an acceptance for the odd nature displayed. There’s little time to rest on this aspect. An event becomes the closing catalyst. Readers watch as the high pressure scene is poised to implode. This pushes to an unsettling confrontation and warning. When doing these stories, readers want different. There’s no shortage of that within these pages.

Rodríguez sets up the horrific crimes with simple panels. The story they convey hits big. Otsmane-Elhaou’s lettering takes the panels to another level. Once Jones and the Martian hit the scene, the art excels in their awkwardness. Seeing the Martian investigate provides a small break from the tensious scene. Even in the interrogation panels, their bond works to unlock some clues.

Once he returns home, Jones’s perspective is changed. The struggles he sees pop off the page. It’s a multi-colored attack on the pages which swings big. Even in its’ smaller times with family, the coloring shows how Jones is processing all the thoughts and emotions. There is little time to decipher all this. A full page image demonstrates another vicious attack. Readers watch in awe as the pair’s unorthodox methods start working until the close. A new player reveals themselves. Their disturbing entrance ramps up the danger. It leaves readers with a superb closing image. No matter when, the next encounter with the pair might be too much to handle.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.4

John Jones and his partner brave the unknown as mysterious deaths mount. Camp’s excellent writing exposes much of the new pair. Rodríguez & Otsmane-Elhaou construct more visual masterpieces as the threat mounts. There has never been a superhero story quite like this one.

Handling the factors of time travel are never easy. Waid juggles many moving parts as the heroes try figuring out what’s happened. The writing plays up the moments with great, awkward interactions. Nightwing and Dick Grayson Robin set the pace early in this chapter. It also sways events into the cold reality at hand. Readers see what Grodd’s actions have truly caused and the trouble they are resonating.

As the action starts unfolding, Waid brings out the best of the classic confrontations. Superman challenging Scarecrow’s fear gas is a prime example. It also unveils a unique look at events. Readers watch as time blurs with iconic events being seen for “the first time”. Even with the reveals, none hit harder than the present Dynamic Duo seeing a much missed family member. Waid’s writing floods with emotion as their moment is quickly brought back to reality. Once here, the close ushers in another changing point. It leaves readers at a crossroads to where things go from here. Another solid chapter in this event.

Henry and Bonvillain open with an “emotional” reunion …of sorts. It’s followed up by a recap of past memories via near full page. With the time jumping, the art brings out the finest from the confusing interactions. The facial reactions of the past heroes talking with Superwoman reflect this. Even with the great action panels, one moment steals the spotlight away.

The other panels are upstaged by the Bat Family reunion. There’s plenty of responses from characters readers will hone in on. It’s a bittersweet moment which lets the brooding heroes guard down. Even if fleeting, it’s a solid change of pace. This leads back to the present and closing stages. The final pages detour any preconceived notions of where things are heading. There’s a great amount of mystery built in from the art.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.3

Dueling time-displacements lead to some fun and bittersweet moments as the heroes try stopping the Legion. Waid’s writing balances the action with steady drama. Henry and Bonvillain unveil the true reflections of broken time with the art. It’s an issue with something for everyone.

Seeing how they’re being worn down from all their crime fighting, readers sense something bad is on the way. This push leans into a deadly scenario. The writing gives a small insight to Batman’s counter moves. Seeing Batman go up against an intellectual challenge drives events into fresh territory. Another aspect is Dick Grayson finding balance between both his lives. It’s a small break before the close. Once here, pacing speeds events up until the last page. Readers watch a gruesome act end events for now with a dark road ahead.

Samnee and Lopes open up with a close-up of Clayface being scolded. Grimaldi’s lecture isn’t well received. The art depicts Clayface brushing him off. This spirals into more frustration. This series never misses on its’ art with good reason.

General Grimaldi brutal push puts the Dynamic Duo in the line of fire. Waid crafts another fantastic issue with the writing. Samnee and Lopes deliver on bold images while capturing a vintage era. This series continues to be one of the best every time an issue drops.

Taylor throws an interesting twist into the post Asema era. Pairing Batman with Harvey Bullock provides a wide open plying field. The writing conveys their wanting of justice, even with different methods. There is common ground for their goals. It also casts Bullock in a different light. Knowing his past, readers watch as one case has made a deep impact on him. This leads into a tense partnership.

Seeing Bullock conduct his business pushes events forward. One meeting in particular keeps events intriguing. The writing reflects its impact as eventually crossroads come into focus. It results in a traditional resolution. This also drives Batman into a different path. Even with set-up, Taylor does have a few tricks up his sleeve. The ending pages bring one to life. It is sure to have readers locked in for the long haul. This opening chapter covers much ground to build from.

Garbett and Loughridge step in for art duty for this story. The opening pages hold nothing back at the brutality of Elixir. Abbott caps this sequence off with a nice usage of “Bang” for the page. The alley sequences are strong pieces that lay the foundation between Batman and Bullock. It allows the latter to take some shine away from Batman as he makes his history known.

The art mirrors the fateful early case of Bullock’s career. A near full page image showcases the horrors of Elixir. Once events snap back to present, the mood shifts to a more gritty feel as Bullock puts in work. This leads into a dangerous portion of story. Its’ resolution starts with a near full page image of Oracle. The action flies in (literally) with Batman hitting a convoy via full page. Pacing is picked up leading to the shocking end. A strong closing image closes up events with many questions for readers to ponder.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

The mystery of Elixir forges an uneasy pairing in the name of justice. Taylor unwraps a hidden side of Harvey Bullock with superb writing. Garbett and Loughridge unlock the brooding past scars with their art. This all leads to a shocking twist that is sure to have fans talking on NCBD!

THE NEW GODS #6 (DC COMICS)

A New God has fallen. In the battle with The Nyctari, Lightray was killed in combat. His noble sacrifice sends High-Father and his supporters on a collision course to Earth. Waiting in the wings are Orion, Mister Miracle and Big Barda. All three are locked in combat over Kamal.

The young child is either a savior or destroyer. Their conflict as drawn the attention of The Justice League. Suffice to say, there’s a LOT happening for Jack Kirby’s Fourth World characters.

The New Gods #6 by Ram V., Evan Cagle, Filipe Andrade, Francesco Segala & Tom Napolitano continues its’ multi-leveled adventures of New Genesis’ finest.

In dealing with death, Ram V. takes the audience into an unlikely view. The Black racer takes center stage as he guides the spirit of Lightray into his final place. Events do not go as planned as Racer’s plans are upset. V’s writing shows the true heart of Solis. It poses a bit of a philosophical question. Much like last chapter, Solis defies the excepted themes. In this chapter, his will might even have a greater impact than expected. Readers watch as the fallout with Racer spreads into a dangerous and exciting path.

As for the other characters involved, their portion doesn’t stand up with Lightray/Racer. The Justice League feels out of place with their story portion. Other than making Orion’s mission feel more important, their time feels misused. Judging by the final page, there appears to be a glimmer of hope for more. Readers won’t be too upset in the long-run. How Ram V. is structuring the Gods is too refreshing of a take to ignore.

Andrade’s art appearing in Ram V’s story is another smash hit for the pair. Fans know their work from The Many Deaths of Laila Starr and Rare Flavours. The watercolor style is fitting for the afterlife. Black Racer’s moves through this landscape starts with a strong two page splash. It locks readers in as events seem to disrupt his latest journey.

The art also provides an emotional depiction of a broken High-Father. His somber loo conveys the same pain as Shadowfall’s tears. This leads into a perfect flashback of Orion and Solis’ younger days. What evolves from this portion leaves with a haunting promise. It’s a stark contrast of tone in comparison to Orion/JL’s time. Cagle constructs a steady rescue attempt. This comes off the heels of a strong opening full page. In the end, the afterlife images carry much more weight and impact as all roads head to Earth.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

A fallen God’s next phase takes center stage as a fan-favorite creative team reunites. Ram V’s writing poses a unique vision of life and death. Andrade & Segala amaze and impress with their breathtaking art. Combine this with Cagle and Napolitano & this chapter hits big marks while progressing an ever engaging tale.

Slott swings big for his first Superman story. Right from the start, he shakes up the foundation of The Daily Planet. It is one that reflects modern times involving print. The injection of Imani Edge opens up some avenues to take the paper. Slott’s writing teases more in Edge’s banter with Lois Lane. It provides solid ground to build this series from. From here, the story moves in a traditional theme before everything goes sideways.

It is a perfect jump-on point for new readers. Slott weaves in iconic moments of the past with “normal” Superman moments. The journey serves as a great mis-direct once the major obstacle arrives. What appears as a routine mission is anything but. The fallout will shake up the stat quo. Slott’s writing shocks readers as a terrifying new “normal” is put into place. It is a sobering reality that even the Symbol of Hope struggles to grasp. If that wasn’t enough, just wait for the final page. Slott throws in one more curve ball that rocks the readers. After reading the final page, there’s no way to wait patiently for the next issue.

Albuquerque & Maiolo build up the drama with the Planet’s big news. Panels are brief but carry an uncertainty to them. That mood quickly changes once Superman goes into action. The art shows him doing what he does best. Readers watch as many examples are given. It provides a heartfelt look at Supes’ impact. This style makes what happens next all the more tragic.

A two page splash shows the deadly challenge in full view. It’s complimented by a fearful close-up of Clark. The art starts its’ flashback sequences covering many iconic moments. Readers will enjoy the set-up as Clark “reliving” his life will strike chords. Even with his challenge winning, Superman never stops trying. This tense mood is broken up by a full page of friends and enemies. It results in a thunderous conclusion and poignant epilogue. The realization of what’s happened is unveiled via two pages. There’s no break to process as the final page steals the scene. It’s full page image throws everything in flux as the new stat quo begins. The team really outdid themselves with this one.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.7

A new danger brings forth a challenge that may be too grave for Superman to overcome. Slott gives readers big moment after moment with the writing. Albuquerque & Maiolo showcase the themes and memories of Kal-El as his new tomorrow sets in. It’s a superb way to embark on the next phase of Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow.

Watters leads Batman into an unlikely lead suspect. Michelle Rickson proves to be an easy pawn in Scarface’s deadly game. The writing shows how fractured she has become while loosing the hold on the residents. Readers watch as her story slowly comes into focus. It also provides an outlet for Batman to showcase his skills. For this moment, he does have an unlikely “partner” along for the ride.

The Ventriloquist is used as a point of sympathy. Watters plays into his weak psyche as Batman breaks down events. It leads into a dramatic finish. The resolution answers many questions for the readers. In typical Batman fashion, there is no true happy endings. Readers see as the tragic tale leaves much to ponder before closing its file. Watters hits the marks with another great crime saga.

Sherman and Farrell open with a very graphic scene. Rickson’s aftermath of Scarface’s influence is front and center. There is no shying away from its’ brutal setting. Panel structures vary from page to page here. Sherman gives this book a few new perspectives while driving home the key plot points. None may be stronger than the unlikely duo.

The breakdown of the case is an instant hit with readers. Seeing Batman examine the scenes assists in clarifying what has happened. Even the scene with a certain “organ on ice” is displayed in a ripple-esque page. Witnessing how Scarface took control is a steady mix of traditional and new panel imagery. Leading into the close, Sherman elevates the scenes to an intense level. As an evacuation takes place, a panel through Batman’s protective eyes jumps out. It’s another great example of the storytelling here. The closing page offers up one last dark full page image cementing the dangers behind the walls. A perfect sendoff to the terror.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #8 (DC COMICS)

An old friend of Bruce Wayne is mysteriously killed. Matches Malone succumbs to an airborne bio-weapon. This puts BATMAN on the case. All signs point to “ARK M” and a scientist with a cold heart.

Victor Fries Jr. heads up a cryo-tech company named “V-Core”. When Wayne arrives to investigate, he finds more that a frosty welcome.

Snyder dances in the horror aspect of this version of the Batman rogue. Fries is completely unhinged. His twisted view deviates from the normal themes. Readers watch as Batman struggles to find a way out of this trap. Where Bruce finds strength turns out to be an unlikely yet effective source.

The bond between his childhood friends continues to breathe new life into this take. Their remembrance of their fallen friend covers many emotions. It also provides the “tough love” events that Bruce Wayne needs to survive. Snyder weaves these conversations in perfect unison of Batman’s fight. Nothing feels overdone or forced. The result kickstarts a strong finish. Much like the Absolute Universe, the close is anything but cliche. It provides steady ground to pause on while teasing a tragic fate to come. Excellent storytelling per usual.

Martin and Vicente’s opening teases the terror of Fries jr. Coloring brings the mood down to a somber tone as Fries goes to work. As his torture starts, Wayne shows his pain via a striking full page image. This is followed up by a bold two page image. Seeing how his flashbacks intertwine with his dilemma will touch a nerve with readers.

It pairs with the friends remembrance well. The use of shadows constructs the tone until its’ true reveal. Readers watch as it gives way to Batman’s arrival via half page panel. Action picks up quick with the frantic setting driving the moment. Another fantastic full page image starts the closing moments of the book. It leaves readers with a sound understanding of what just transpired. The closing page unveils a surprise move as Batman’s world takes another giant loss. Events are wrapped up nicely with a on the horizon.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

A cold day in Gotham wraps up with a true perspective of the Absolute Universe. Snyder’s writing encompasses the true horror of the classic Batman rogue. Martin and the art team exposes the terror lying within a cold heart. Judging by the ending, things are only getting worse for Bruce Wayne’s ever fractured world.
