THE QUESTION: ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER #6 (DC COMICS) by Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Willie Schubert (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Segura brings a solid conclusion to Montoya’s final stand. Her latest challenge has not been just against Henshaw. It has been her facing her demons and finding herself along the way. After being discarded by Henshaw, the writing takes Montoya on one final confrontation with her past. It poses a unique perspective pushing the hero towards the final battle.

On the other end, Henshaw’s blind confidence oozes like a true villain. The writing cats him in many traditional villain roles. It’s reflected in the dialogue with Eradicator. Readers watch as their paths come together with a mixed result closing. Their final moments of face-off conclude very quickly. It concedes to the real main event. The dialogue shows Montoya’s acceptance and growth. This spirals into the parting moments which leave many possibilities.

Tormey and Fajardo jr. open the chapter with a stunning full page panel. Montoya falling through space indicates the dire situation she’s in. The flashback panels strengthen her inner turmoil heading into a desperate attack. In comparison, Henshaw’s reactions mirror the dastardly villains of yesteryear. As much as those panels build up the tension, this all comes down to Montoya’s coming to terms with herself.

A unique full page unveils Montoya’s last attempts to find her motivation. This becomes the catalyst to close. Henshaw’s plans come into focus via another full page image. Readers can easily see how the pieces are set to win or go home. The action sequence at this stage are brief. They complete this portion of events before giving way to the fallout. Once here, the emotions start pouring out of Montoya. It leaves readers with a possible vision of the future which is nothing but win.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

The last stand of Renee Montoya concludes on steady ground in its closing chapter. Segura’s writing leans into the personal pressures of the Question. Tormey and Fajardo jr. give a very traditional superhero throwdown its’ due with the art. After this conclusion, there will be no question on where Montoya ranks amongst the DC’s finest.

ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER #2 by Deniz Camp, Javier Rodríguez and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Camp pushes Jones into uncharted territory in this new installment. The dynamic between Jones and the Martian takes fascinating turns. It leaves readers questioning their partnership with its’ mystery. Jones is reluctant to buy into the new quo. This pushes the Martian to take hold. There are some awkward yet funny moments between the pair. It also provides readers a unique vision of how telepathy is used. There is also consequences with these gifts.

The conflict concludes tragically while setting the stage for a greater threat. Its’ fallout leaves a somber mood as the pair isn’t ready for what is coming next.

Rodríguez kicks events off with a dark portrait of Taylor’s world. This leads into the psychedelic aspects of Jones and the Martian’s dialogue. The use of colors allude to more than meets the eye. A half page panel indicates this thoroughly. This continues as the Martian showcases what Jones is seeing. The art shows a stunning display of telepathy via half page panel.

This carries into Taylor’s full page vision. How Rodríguez uses Taylor’s body as an outline for his carnage is visually frightening. It sends a direct message to the readers before the pair makes their play to stop him. The Martian’s mental purging comes into focus via a full page vision. Nothing is more shocking than how Taylor is stopped. The full page panel jumps off the page as it closes events. With secrets revealed, the book closes with subtle yet noteworthy panels. In “Batman/Superman:World Finest”, readers witnessed the early seeds of this onslaught. Now it’s time to see the fruits of that labor take shape.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #6 by Mark Waid, Travis Moore, Tamra Bonvillain, and Dave Sharpe continues the “We Are Yesterday” storyline.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the DC Comics Crossover event.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #6 by Mark Waid, Travis Moore, Tamra Bonvillain, and Dave Sharpe (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid reveals many secrets that have been building since the first chapter of JLU. The synergy with “Absolute Power” fallout cannot be denied throughout the DCU. In this case, the explanation behind Grodd’s attack comes into focus. It leads into a terrifying start for the famous Flash rogue. Readers see a glimpse of what Grodd can do with his new powers. The result is devastating for the unknowing pawn in his game.

The storyline with Air Wave has been such a mystery since emerging in “Absolute Power”. Waid plays the long game with setting up the drama. Seeing how Grodd manipulates the young hero is brutal and tragic. It is equally intense with how he manipulates his partners as well. Readers can’t help but be blown away once all the smoke clears. The fallout brings down the house as drastic measures are taken. This leads into a solid cliffhanger. With so many moving parts, nothing is lost in shuffle. As far as heroes and time, that’s another story.

Moore steps in for art duties with Bonvillain. The opening pages of Grodd’s prison escape light an explosive start. The full page shot of the League in action with Grodd narration foreshadows much. Seeing Grodd use his new powers shows the scary reach he now has. This pushes towards the slow burn build on a young hero’s mind.

Opening with Superman talking with Air Wave, the art teases optimism. After some brief action, Grodd makes his entrance. The reactions of both speak volumes to the readers. Grodd’s deceptive caring & Raid’s unknowing possession makes for a dire combination. Moore throws in a full page breakdown of where events are heading. This leads into the show-stopping close. Readers watch as Wave makes a valiant stand. It spirals into a larger fight and more surprising response. A final full page sends events into the unknown which fans won’t want to escape.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.4

The saga of Air Wave comes front and center with “We Are Yesterday” taking shape. Waid’s writing guides readers through the dark masquerade. Moore and Bonvillain construct the misleading maze a young hero walks. The results push events into a past readers won’t want to forget!

BATMAN #159 (DC COMICS)

The Joker left for dead?! Each wound is struck with precision. His jaw left in shambles. Once Batman examines the scene, he comes up with one possible suspect. Thomas Elliot has returned to Gotham City. What is HUSH planning for Bruce Wayne this time around?

BATMAN #159 by Jeph Loeb, Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Alex Sinclair and Richard Starkings continues the sequel to the 2008 story.

Let’s take a closer look at where events stand now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Loeb is attempting to create a sense of paranoia amongst the Bat Family. Having Batman “save” The Joker is a tricky take. The scenes with Dr. Leslie Thompkins throws a fun twist into events. It also takes away some of the drama. Knowing the oath Batman has taken concerning lives, it telegraphs where he needs to go with is most dangerous enemy. Even more confusing is the notion of Batman ALLOWING the Joker to die.

This leads into a character’s entree that makes sense. Jason Todd has always had a reason to kill the Joker. The writing leans heavy into that theme. Seeing how Batman responds is puzzling. Readers watch as he actually internalized killing the Joker. Now, he’s living in self regret. the ending is baffling. If Todd’s mission is to kill the Joker, then why is Batman letting him knock him out? I have an idea where they were trying to go but execution missed the mark. It leaves events more uncertain heading into the next round.

If not for Lee’s art, there wouldn’t be much to salvage this chapter. The two page splash of Crime Alley sets a haunting tone. This leads into a strong full page of the Joker needing help. Batman’s dream state also hits with readers. The red coloring makes the panels pop before moving into the Batcave.

Once here, a fantastic two page spread indicates Batman’s breakdown. His outer monologue is tense but quickly interrupted. The fight with Red Hood builds towards its huge reveal. Readers witness the moment get captured via a smashing two page image. This is vintage Lee storytelling. It leads into some more personal demons being exorcised but feels disjointed. Another point I didn’t spend time on is the Nightwing/Batgirl portion. Their partner gets a great full page reveal with many questions behind it. Once back on track, the close attempts to save the ending but can’t pull it off.

OVERALL GRADE: 7

With the interjection of Jason Todd, “Hush 2” tries to capture the pain of the Joker’s past actions. Unfortunately, the landing doesn’t stick. The writing tries forcing Hush’s impact too much onto a new pawn. Lee’s art continues to be the star of the show in this sequel. Unless there’s some sort of deeper play happening, there are more faults forming in the foundation.

We have waited long enough for this conclusion. After waiting since 2023 for its’ return, let’s see how this all ends for Mr. Luthor and company.

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor #3 by Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (Comcraft) - DC COMICS

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Throughout this series, the complex connection between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor has been examined. When a new threat enters the field, Waid switches the focus to their need of the other. The set-up is brilliant as the conflict makes Lex a pawn. This doesn’t sit well with someone who carries himself higher than others. What transpires next is a true definition of “What If”.

Knowing he’s dying, Luthor pushes forward with a heroic sensibility. Seeing how Superman reacts is justified. The symbol of hope refuses to lose it. He forces Lex’s hand with a fun twist. Waid lets the pair showcase their skills as time slips further away. This leads into their ultimate confrontation. The writing allows for Luthor to demonstrate his way of saving humanity. It hits with a bittersweet ending. The fallout gives a somber gravity to their complicated history. It also provides a lasting legacy fitting for two friends who lost their way.

Hitch and the art team go big for the finale. The two page introduction of Brainiac instantly sets the grave mood. Luthor’s reactions bounce off Brainaic’s unemotional responses. Even when Superman thinks he has back-up, a solid half panel shows how much the last Kryptonian is not in control. This pushes everything towards a doomed final play with the world at stake. Another two page splash shows Superman and Lex fighting their way into an escape. This gives way to a “parting” moment between old friends.

Once Luthor has a plan to stop Brainiac, the art shows how both know this is the end. Each facial response lets this inevitability sink further in. A Half page panel shows readers how both are rocked by Luthor’s attempts. This leads into an unlikely assault onto Brainiac’s ship. All of the action here feels straight out of a Hollywood film. The emotions start giving way as Luthor makes a final play. The fallout teases one possibility while setting up a shocking move. A parting two page image shows readers the rippling effect of what has happened. It leads to a well-placed final panel. In dealing with tragedy, the memories of the past provide comfort to compliment their legacy.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.7

As time runs out, Lex Luthor denies fate with a spectacular finale. Waid’s writing presents the final stand with a strong level of emotion. Hitch and the art team make the last stand of Superman & Luthor into a major event. This series crashes the list of “greatest Superman stories” with much for fans to enjoy.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1096 (DC COMICS)

Has evil won before Gotham’s protector had a chance? Asema has been one step ahead of Batman since the start. With wayward teens being killed, the Dark Knight has been searching for a break. One finally appears to be in reach. An explosion occurs that might sever any chance for justice. It also might be one escape Batman can’t solve as well.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1096 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janin, Norm Rapmund, and Wes Abbott puts the Caped Crusader right in the line of fire!

Let’s take a deeper dive into the ever-challenging case!

DETECTIVE COMICS #1096 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janin, Norm Rapmund, and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Taylor brings events to a close by returning to the beginning. Batman’s understanding of his father’s choice weighs heavy. Right from the beginning, Batman makes his big escape from the burning building. It does not conclude without a long awaited deduction. Asema’s true form and intentions come front and center. This leads into a startling challenge of ethics.

The writing showcases Asema’s true motives. Taylor weaves this drive into direct opposition of Batman. Having a wrong re-written is a personal temptation. It also allows Asema to attempt a twisted reasoning. This is halted by Batman’s personal choices. The dynamic is pure drama. Its’ fallout fires off quickly. Much can be said for the “Bat Family” portion of the book. It doesn’t take away from the impact of Batman’s call. The epilogue ties up loose ends while leaving small openings. It’s a fitting ending for one of the more exciting mental challenges of Bruce Wayne’s career.

Janin and company pick right up with the burning escape. The full page image gives a flare to events before diving back into drama. Asema’s reveal is bursting with anger. The stand-off with Batman shows neither’s willingness to back down. This leads into a peril of choice. The art doesn’t back down form challenging Batman at his core.

This overshadows the Bat Family’s entry into the story. They have many great action sequences. In comparison to Asema’s, there is a notable impact change. The panel remembrance to Thomas Wayne provides a great starting point to the eventual quick conflict. Events tie off with a reflective state for Wayne. It conveys the acceptance of an oath no matter the cost. The epilogue is brief but adds a complimentary piece to a larger puzzle at hand.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.1

Asema’s regin of terror comes to an emotional halt with its arc conclusion. Taylor keeps adding on the deep-rooted struggle with the writing. Janin and company piece energetic action into the personal toll taken. Readers will want to have this one on their radars for NCBD.

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #38 (DC COMICS)

A major crossover event starts here for the DCU. Spiraling out of the pages of Justice League Unlimited, Gorilla Grodd has been revealed in connection to Inferno. Let’s not wait another minute and dive into the drama!

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #38 by Mark Waid, Clayton Henry, Tamra Bonvillain & Steve Wands (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid sets events in motion with a superb superhero story. The dialogue between Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent is playful from old friends. Even with Hal Jordan’s interjections, nothing feels ajar. It is as one would think when the longtime friends interact in their alter egos. Once Grodd makes his first move, the tone swings dramatically. Readers watch as this is the first run-in with the Worlds’ Finest and the dangerous foe.

Adding Flash into the mix is a natural move. Who better to assist in fighting the foe than his old nemesis? Waid throws in some great swerves as the heroes adapt to dealing with Grodd’s army. Pacing never stops escalating. Readers still back and watch as the heroes take some drastic measures. The writing shows Grodd as defiant as ever. It hits all the marks for what a superhero story should be. The fallout seems standard until the end. Once here, events shift to the present where Grodd makes another move. An excellent start to a high-octane saga between the JL eras.

Henry steps in for art duties in this initial start. The conversation between Clark and Bruce brings out their lighter sides. This especially works with Bruce Wayne. His facial reactions are a stark contrast to his Batman persona. The mood changes when Grodd enters the scene. A full page image starts off the frantic action. The art brings out the classic team-up themes before a swerve is poured in.

Once that reveal is played, it is greeted with a half page panel. Henry and Bonvillain showcase the turn of events with high drama. Readers watch as a worst case scenario happens. It doesn’t take long for the heroes to try a desperate play. The conclusion shows how luck was on their side this day. Its’ fallout leads to some stunning final panels. If there was any indication of how dire Grodd’s attack is going to be, this is it.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.1

“We Are Yesterday” throws a very unique challenge at the Justice League. Waid sets the stage with excellent writing. Henry, Bonvillain and Wands craft the vintage story with impressive art. Where things go form the last page is literally anyone’s guess.

THE NEW GODS #5 (DC COMICS)

War has come to New Genesis’ front door! The Nyctari are making their impression felt in the void of Darkseid. Complicating matters more is a New God has appeared on Earth, Is Kamal a savior or destroyer? High-Father isn’t taking any chances.

He has dispatched Orion to dispose of the child. Mister Miracle and Big Barda are the only ones standing in Orion’s path. With two conflicts happening at once, there is plenty of drama to go around for Jack Kirby’s Fourth World characters.

The New Gods #5 by Ram V., Evan Cagle, Andrew MacLean, Francesco Segala & Tom Napolitano ramps up the danger with an all new chapter.

Let’s see how the latest installment plays out.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Ram V. takes this chapter into a dire direction. The opening follows Lightray as he poses a question about mortality. His inquiry covers many different answers. One theme is very clear. Even the most powerful do not understand Death. The writing plays this into a driving factor of the chapter. It is fitting with one God dying, a new one appears to take its place.

Once the story jump back into present time, it starts finding its path. The battle of New Genesis has a regal feel. Seeing Izaya take his attack to the Nyctari kickstarts a desperate effort. The result is one that shakes the foundation of the New Gods to its core. It upstages the fight between Orion and the Frees, which is very brief. Their faceoff teases more to come next issue with guests.

For this round, it belongs to a valiant sacrifice in vain. Readers watch as all roads start coming together with a philosophical question leading the way. Where this all leads is up in the air. In the meantime, the forthcoming reunion will be one not to miss.

MacLean opens the chapter with a distinct look at Lightray’s questioning. The reactions of each God is very telling. This ultimately leads into a conversation with someone who has the answer. A near half page image gives some clues. It also serves up a solid homage to Kirby’s vision before heading back to the present.

Once here, Cagle takes over. Izaya’s entrance is given an epic image. Napolitano’s lettering sells the scene as even greater than expected. This leads to a stoic reaction of Izaya striking one of his attackers. The powerful blow starts up a series of conflicts. The two page splash of Orion’s fight gives a solid break from the war on New Genesis. It is fleeting as attention goes back to Izaya.

The potential fatal blow is diverted in a strong half page image. Readers watch as the noble sacrifice proves to be a much needed wake-up call. It leads Izaya’s path back to Earth. Judging by who shows up the last page, the full image tips off there may not be a warm welcome. Great work as always.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

A simple question spawns a tragic loss for New Genesis. Ram V. puts deeper elements into the wartime battle with the writing. MacLean’s throwback pages add more momentum for Cagle and companies present day images. With all signs leading to Earth, the New Gods shouldn’t expect a warm welcome anytime soon.

SUMMER OF SUPERMAN SPECIAL #1 (DC COMICS)

The summer of 2025 is going to be a super one! James Gunn is unveiling the long anticipated “Superman” film in July. Movies aren’t the only fandom affected by the Man Of Steel. DC Comics has their Superman line primed and ready to maintain the excitement. It all starts with a wedding of super proportions!

SUMMER OF SUPERMAN SPECIAL #1 by Mark Waid, Dan Slott,
Joshua Williamson, Jorge Jiménez, Belén Ortega, Dan Mora & Dave Sharpe kicks off the next phase of Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow!

Let’s take a closer look at what’s coming up!

SUMMER OF SUPERMAN SPECIAL #1 by Mark Waid, Dan Slott,
Joshua Williamson, Jorge Jiménez, Belén Ortega, Dan Mora & Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With a wedding between John Henry Irons and Lana Lang taking place, Clark Kent is thrown a few challenges. This comes via three chapters. Waid takes the lead and throwsback to young Clark and Lana. It gives readers a sense of Clark’s feelings towards his first love. The writing keeps this theme going while he deals with a threat. Seeing young Clark rationalize these emotions only strengthens what’s yet to come.

Slott makes his Superman entrance with a balanced helping of action and drama. The present day brings John and Lana’s wedding. In typical fashion, if something can go wrong, it will. For this day, it’s a threat from the past. The writing lends itself to establish two conflicts. Superman handles the rematch of the past. The “Super Family” deals with some (un)natural disasters. All points drive towards a strong conclusion. Its’ fallout sets a key direction in motion. Fans also get a happy ending before the final chapter upsets everything.

Williamson comes in for the definitive close. The opening of his chapter is all wedding bliss. Clark’s feeling of joy come to the spotlight. It is a solid place to end the happy moments before investigating his recent problems. The writhing breaks down his recurring foe is a very presentable fashion. Nothing is tipped off too much for the audience. This leads to a few easter eggs before the shocking ending. At this stage, another voice emerges from the shadows. Everything fans might have thought is flipped. Once the reveal of the voice is shown, all bets are off from what’s coming next.

Jiménez takes the wheel for the majority of the book. The opening captures the innocence of the young teens. Clark’s awkwardness bounces off Lana’s genuine demeanor. This rolls into a young Superboy in action via a full page shot. The action travels into a sequence of time displaced full pages. Each carry visions of what’s to come. One in particular shakes up the young hero. It leads events back to his present time with a different path taken. The art bridges the gap from past to present with a looming feel on uncertainity.

Once in the present, Jiménez lets round two start with a bang. The future threat gets a half page welcome. It is countered with a new full page image of Clark and Lois leading the charge into action. Readers watch as the two page splashes take hold. They ramp up the excitement before coming back down to Earth in its’ close.

Chapter three (with Ortega finishing) focuses more on the Wedding reactions before speeding into the final conflict. It transitions magnificently to the final showdown. A full page image passes the Epilogue duties to Dan Mora. Once here, readers have a monster secret revealed in an intense final full page. After witnessing that, readers had better prepare for an even greater storm on the horizon.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

Two timelines bring together two hearts as the Summer of Superman begins with an excellent start. The writing takes readers into the past, present and future of Clark Kent with can’t miss chapters. Jiménez constructs lights out panels with the art. Mora’s Epilogue will be the talk of NCBD so make sure you don’t miss what’s unfolding here!

BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #5 (DC COMICS)

A true tower of Terror exists in Gotham. In his earlier years, Batman relied heavily on his detective skills. This series by DC Comics is focusing in on that era of the Dark Knight. BATMAN: DARK PATTERNS #5 by Dan Watters, Hayden Sherman, Tríona Farrell and Frank Cvetkovic continues the “Voice in the Tower” saga.

Let’s take a deeper dive into this throwback Batman story.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

For anyone just jumping into this story, buckle in. Watters is bringing out the best detective aspects of Batman. The initial pages build up the run-in with Scarface and the Ventriloquist. Its outcome would tend to solve everything nicely. Watters adds more mystery to this case, providing a much richer tale.

A simple encounter with a family inside the building proves impactful. The time shows the hardships of a citizen. This spills into a deep cut into breaking the case. Readers watch as the story breaks away towards other residents. Their mounting anger becomes very apparent. Even as Batman works his methods, there is plenty of twists along the way. Watters leans heavy into these moments for the close. It gives readers plenty to focus on, esp. the last page. The writing with this series is second to none.

Sherman and Farrell construct very unconventional panels for pages. The opening shot of Scarface leads the intense showdown into a simple ending. Readers watch as this moment isn’t so cut and dry. A full page image of the Bat descending in the building leads into more unchartered territory. With the panel set-up, the images reflect the broken state of the residents. Even with Batman putting clues together, not everything is an easy fit.

This is complementing the story of Rickson and Michelle. Their page feels as readers are looking thru the others eyes. The art team guides readers into the next phase with some solid action. Keeping Batman lurking in shadows is a classic touch. It ramps up more suspense as the case deepens. The closing pages never shy away from shocking readers. Let’s not delay and dive into the new story.

ABSOLUTE BATMAN #7 by Scott Snyder, Marcos Martín, Muntsa Vicente, and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Snyder flips another classic mythos into a familiar wheelhouse. Taking Mr. Freeze’s origin to an even more tragic place works on many levels. Knowing Snyder’s impeccable Horror storytelling, the new take is brilliant. It is exactly what the Absolute Universe represents. This is no “cookie cutter” portrait of the DCU. It is a much darker place in tone and direction.

This point comes across when “the Rogues” address recent events. The conversation peels back the layers of Wayne’s secret life. Readers watch as the emotions surface and boil. It reflects the pain of losing one of their own. In some ways, that has already happened. Snyder pens the unforgiving view of Batman in a much harsher tone. It results in a few flashback moments. Once in the close, there’s a great twist set in place. Readers will watch in shock as another change has happened that no even the Dark Knight is ready for.

Martín & Vicente step in for art duties. The innocent start of Fries’ tale begins with a two page credits image. Cowles lettering tips off the impending terror. The use of coloring makes the “rogues” portion pop off pages. Vicente uses many shadows to hide faces. Snyder’s dialogue drives the body languages. Marin’s pencils only give silhouettes. It leaves elements up to the readers to decide. These panels switch gears from the tension driven flashback with Fries.

A familiar name makes a timely exit in this chapter. The near half page image sends a strong message to readers. This leads into an incredible two page splash of Batman in the night sky. Readers watch as the Fries story becomes front and center. It reveals a few horror inspired elements. This is complemented by a full page image painting a frosty picture. Events ultimately push into the closing page. The art team leaves one more shocking image before ducking out. After readers see this, there will be no doubt of how broken this new landscape truly is.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

The re-introduction of a classic rogue pushes Batman into a horrific vision with this chapter. Snyder leans heavy into a frightening take with the writing. Martín & Vicente presents a cleaner, yet dark perspective on his latest drama with the art. Brace for quite the terrifying tale unfolding now.

JSA #6 by Jeff Lemire, Diego Olortegui, Joey Vazquez, Luis Guerrero and Steve Wands (DC Comics) delivers a heartbreaking conclusion to its’ opening arc.

Let’s take a deeper dive and see who wins the showdown.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The true conflict of this story hasn’t been the Injustice Society. It has been the struggle of ethics. Does the modern climate still adhere to the traditional ways of crime-fighting. Lemire breaks this down in a few key characters. The most evident is Jade. However, the true conflict shines with Ted Grant. Readers see how both deal with this dilemma. Unfortunately, their results prove detrimental.

Lemire telegraphs Grant’s part in the opening pages. The dialogue with Dr. Fate leads to the challenges of the team’s youth movement. It shows the eternal optimism trying to win. With the deck stacked against, Grant leads into a doomed showdown. There is a sense of dread hovering each panel. This feeling is mirrored in Jade’s plight. Events have positioned the divide between JSA members. A spy in the ranks has stirred the pot. It leads to a shocking reaction. A member crossed a sacred line. Jade’s response echoes the readers. “What has happened to the JSA”?

Their answer comes in the closing pages. Lemire orchestrates the dwindling hope. Each member comes across as broken. None more than those on the final page. It ends events with a somber portrait. Not only has a member fallen. Maybe what it means to be a hero has as well is the takeaway…

The art team opens with Grant’s “tough love” lesson with Dr. Fate. It sets a solid precursor for the final stand. The action begins with a monster two-page splash. Readers watch as the heroes know they are in the endgame. There is never a shortage of tension here. This carries into Grant’s stand-off to protect Fate. Each panel showcases a hero’s heart against overwhelming odds. It never escapes the readers. Only when a half panel image changes everything does it sink even lower into pain.

Jade’s time conveys the same emotions. Seeing a fellow member lose their cool snowballs into anger. A near full page shot strikes the wrong nerve. It pushes the hero to cross a line. The art team sells the image with fantastic coloring. Readers watch as pent-up frustrations boil over. Jade’s rage is written all over her face. Her team is broken. There is no room to pause. The final full page eclipses all. It ties up events with a striking image for readers. There will be plenty of questions surrounding the future after this issue.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

The JSA enters into its’ darkest hour with an emotional chapter. Lemire’s writing presents the constant pressures of remaining a hero. The art shines through the dark times lying in wait. This one will have readers talking on NCBD.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE ATOM PROJECT #4 (DC COMICS)

Things just went from bad to worse for the Atoms. Their project to return stolen super powers seems to be working. One hero that doesn’t want his back is Captain Atom. His involvement in the project has shifted. The hero is on the run from the government after being its’ test subject.

Now standing in his way is Major Force. Can the project move forward if Captain Atom is taken off the board?

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE ATOM PROJECT #4 by Ryan Parrott, John Ridley, Mike Perkins, Adriano Lucas, and Wes Abbott continues to showcase the fallout of Absolute Power.

Let’s take a closer look at where things stand now.

JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE ATOM PROJECT #4 by Ryan Parrott, John Ridley, Mike Perkins, Adriano Lucas, and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This is easily the best issue of the series thus far. Captain Atom has been a unique fixture in this saga. From going along with the Atoms’ plan to now resisting, it has been a long road. This chapter finally exposes why he’s now resisting authority. It’s not a question of loyalty. The dilemma at hand is power and responsibility. As much damage as Amanda Waller did, the writing suggests that Ray Palmer might have crossed a line like she did.

Atom’s face-off with Major Force is brewing with old wounds. It’s big action that showcases Atom’s new power levels. The past recap isn’t distracting in this aspect. Readers watch as the more successful Palmer’s plans are, the greater the toll on the Captain. The transition from ally to guinea pig is a tough pill to swallow. It’ only amplified with government involvement. The resolution mirrors back to the present time.

The writing delivers on a big fight ending to Atom’s current brawl. It also throws in a long term curve with its newest character entry. Knowing the movement in the DCU, this story has now taken on much more importance. Heading into its overall close should have a massive ripple effect.

Perkins and Lucas start events off with a big two page splash for Force and the Captain. It sets a strong pace for the present time portion of the chapter. In the past, the focus is all reactions. Panels depict the slow breaking of a hero. It also brings out the blind focus of Palmer’s quest. Missing what is being done to an ally creates stronger drama.

It all takes a back seat to the Force vs. Atom fight. The art takes the center and never lets up. Readers can sense Captain’s rage as he fights. It almost feels like an emotional release from all of Palmer’s testing. This leads into a striking half panel conclusion of the fight. Left in its wake is a shocking final page. The full page shot throws everything in flux as new players crash the science game. How they ultimately factor in should be immense to the overall DCU.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.4

The rage of a broken hero is too strong for science. In this latest chapter, the writing reveals the growing impact of the DCU’s secret project. Perkins and the art team craft big action along with the painful cost of powers and responsibility. The last page raises stakes even higher than one thought at the start. Where it goes now is anyone’s guess.

SECRET SIX #2 (DC COMICS)

Dreamer. Gossamer. Superman Jon Kent. Deadshot. Black Alice. Catman. Six characters brought together by one common denominator: Amanda Waller. After the events of “Absolute Power”, Waller was left with no memory in Belle Reve Prison.

Someone has sprung her out of jail. If she remembers, the world can be in danger once again. A reluctant team plans on finding here. The only thing standing in their way is….themselves.

SECRET SIX #2 by Nicole Maines, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands continues the Hunt for Amanda Waller.

Let’s take a closer look and see what transpires now.

SECRET SIX #2 by Nicole Maines, Stephen Segovia, Rain Beredo, and Steve Wands (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Maines lets the combustible egos explode in this chapter. Out of the six, Gossamer has the most anger to work out. It is completely justified on how Jay feels. Once Black Alice makes a bad comment in refence to his dead mother, the brawling begins. Knowing that Waller and her squad were responsible, there’s no escaping the pain. This becomes a domino effect with Deadshot and Kent. Only when the book hits its’ midway point does it reset towards the true mission at hand.

The writing shifts Deadshot and Kent formulating their intel. Readers see the direct issues start taking shape. It is a distinct “honor amongst thieves” feel as the banter goes on. Deadshot proves to be the voice of reason as it pertains to Waller. However, another talk steals the issue. Dreamer and Jay finally have a much needed discussion. There is plenty of baggage between both with Waller factoring in. The result starts forming the uneasy team needed for what’s at hand. How long this lasts will be tested judging by the last panel. With everyone having a different motive, can this team work? Time will answer that.

Segovia and Beredo fill the pages with solid action. Knowing the temperamental personalities, there was no doubt they was going to implode. The mid-panel shot inside the House of Secrets rings the bell for the throwdown. Deadshot comes across as the true danger in his brawl with Jon Kent. Even as chaotic as Jay and Alice is, nothing outshines Floyd Lawton. A small panel showing his sly grin is evidence of that. One other makes a run for Deadshot’s spotlight in this brawl.

Catman crashes the party with a near full page panel. The art team deals dueling panels as a new face-off begins. Events swing towards a calmer pace heading to closing. Jay’s frustration with Dreamer pours from panel to panel. It’s matched by Dreamer’s guilt and subtle scheming. All roads leads to a strong final panel. The dueling faces prove how divided the team truly is. It is clear that the ego on this team will be the main reason if they don’t succeed and we’re all here to watch.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.1

What happens when you mix six angry super-powered beings in the House of Secrets? That is what the latest chapter sets out to prove. Maines brings all the drama to new heights with the writing. Segovia and the team balance out the uneasy peace in between all the fighting. Can this team hold it together long enough? Find out when you pick this issue up.

SUPERMAN #24 (DC COMICS)

Doomsday’s latest appearance in Metropolis left very big wounds. Superwoman made a grave error in judgement. The result critically injured Jimmy Olsen. Superman found a way to defeat him. The downside was it invoked Lex Luthor getting his memories back.

SUPERMAN #24 by Joshua Williamson, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher picks up the pieces after Doomsday!

Let’s take a closer look at what happens now!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The dilemma of being a boy scout. Williamson throws both Clark and Lois a struggle of conscience. As they arrive at Supercorp, the affair of Lex and Mercy Graves takes stage. This has been a moment building for quite some time. It also gives a distraction before events change for the worst. Superman’s logo is being commercialized for weapons. This doesn’t sit well with Superman (obviously). The response causes a domino effect that shatters the stat quo.

Readers watch as the Super-couple is greatly challenged. The writing shows Lois struggling to focus on a mission due to Jimmy Olsen’s situation. Williamson brings out the guilt before she unearths a larger problem at hand. Clark deals with a choice he has made as well. It spirals into a reveal readers were eventually waiting on. How we got there is a completely different story. The final act unveils a future far from perfect. Since issue one, this has been the build. Who will be left standing.

Barrows and Ferreira step in for Dan Mora for art. They welcome readers to new love with a full page of Lex and Mercy embracing. The mood shifts to a more serious tone quickly. Superman’s reaction to weapons building goes as well as one thinks. Lois is called away for Justice League business. A two page splash welcomes her to the team in flying colors.

Her conversation with The Creeper becomes an unlikely hit. The art mirrors the guilt she carries for Olsen. This leads into some solid action images. It’s a contrast from Superman and Lex. The choice made thrusts everything into the close. His interaction with Mercy is given a great surprise via half panel. As good as that is, it falls short to the final page. The full page image presents a greater threat to Superman that he may not be ready for.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.3

All good deeds don’t go unpunished. Williamson sets the bar high with secrets and reveals. The art team give a growing sense of untrust with their art. Everything this series has set up is about to explode next chapter. Prepare of impact with this chapter.
