The most devasting attack Waller has unloaded isn’t the depowering. It’s the personal wound driven into Superman. Waid pens the intense barrage with a heartless theme behind it. The move does more damage than any Kryptonite can ever cause. This leads to an erratic Man Of Steel trying to steer a lost cause.

One character does steal a lot of thunder with a speech fans will be raving about. Nightwing has emerged as the new face of DC. Waid gives him a legendary moment that won’t be soon forgotten. From here, the writing presents a very fast paced tale. With action unfolding everywhere, the major players get their key moments. This plays into a slower third act to let the readers recoup. The chapter departs on a big discovery. It only grows the feeling of how high the stakes are. “Event” is the only way to describe this!

Mora and Sánchez bring to life the desperate times of the heroes. The loss of control is shown loudly on the heroes faces. Once Nightwing takes control of the room, the art gives him a proper platform to call his shots. The two page spread elevates his status even more as he addresses the remaining heroes.

It is tough to follow that up, but Mora constructs amazing fight sequences as the conflict hits home. During the melee, the heartfelt wear of actions pour out of Superman. This speaks directly to the audience as he comprehends what Waller has done. Another character has a huge moment built by close up panels. The extreme costs of this conflict shine bright with the art. Readers will no doubt be on the edge of their seats for this one.

The Trinity Of Evil continue to tighten their hold on the DCU with another amazing chapter. Waid’s writing drives home the personal attack on Superman with a direct bullseye. Mora and Sánchez construct the explosive action in between the high drama. This series is firing on all cylinders and simply defines “must read”.

“The Wall” has never been shy about her feelings towards super heroes. Waller’s ruthlessness and determination is second to none. With Absolute Power within reach, Readers are about to see how it all began.

Ridley constructs a beginning based on loss and revenge. The parallels to Bruce Wayne’s beginnings make an instant connection to the readers. Both are driven by great loss. However, that is where the comparison ends. Waller deals with a system failing her when she needed it the most. Seeing how masked vigilantes receive preferred treatment lights a strong emotional reaction. This fuels her rage and begins her new path of vengeance.

Waller’s long game play works to perfection. It is not without challenges. The strain put on her family is tough and amplifies how committed she is to her goal. Seeing the big picture, Waller finds ways to sway favor in her direction.

The strongest point of this chapter is a conversation between Waller and Marvin Collins (who she’s volunteering on his congress campaign). In this moment, Waller delivers to readers why she is so dangerous. The pieces to a larger puzzle start falling in place. Once the closing page hits, there is no doubt this is only the beginning of something more sinister.

Martinez brings the painful beginnings of Waller’s path by capturing her rage in multiple panels. There is a key reaction to a Jim Gordon statement that is very clear in seeing her transform from sorrow into vengeful. Batman gets a full page image justifying what Waller is envisioning while Collins opponent is talking. Her unfazed reaction to the speech exemplifies how hardened she’s become to anything outside of her goal.

Waller’s conversation with her daughter shows the wear of her actions. Readers see the frustration in her expressions. This becomes short-lived as Waller begins her final play. The cold demeanor plays out perfectly as she accomplishes her first goal. It is complemented by the final page. Waller’s eyes speak more than any word bubble can. One goal down, many more to go.

FINAL GRADE: 9

Amanda Waller’s path to power begins with a strong tale of conviction over grief. Ridley pens a direct and excellent first chapter with the writing. Martinez, Rapmund, Dalhouse and Wands construct the revenge guided visuals showcasing the genesis of arguably the most dangerous person on the DCU Earth. This will be one story you won’t want to miss.

SUPERMAN #16 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, the Man of Steel has fallen! Amanda Waller dealt a shocking blow. Absolute Power kicked off in a monster way. Superman’s powers are no more. After being shot, Clark Kent is currently fighting for his life. It’s an unfathomable thought come to life. Is the DCU about to lose Superman again?

Williamson takes readers down a few paths for this issue. Seeing a rare glimpse of Young Clark sets the stage for the shocking reality of events. The writing creates the desperate attempt to save Superman perfectly. Once at this stage, the spotlight is thrown on Zatanna to take the baton and run.

Her portion of the book is one that fans will become fully invested with. In this “new” powerless era, Zatanna adapts to the new stat quo with some unlikely help. Tying back to the beginning of this series, it solidifies how far one character has changed working with Big Blue. Even with the seriousness of Waller’s onslaught, there’s a great sequence involving well timed humor.

The break balances out the chapter heading into the final act. Once there, the story mixes in some surprises. None will stand out more than the final page. This is largely due to the artwork of Campbell.

It has been a while since readers have seen him on a full Superman book. Readers received a quick reminder of how great his vision of Superman’s world is. The young Clark moments creates the wholesome era of Smallville. The transition to present day is pulled off with dramatic ease.

Zatanna steals scenes with her fighting skills. There are a few half page panels that signify her impact on the current state. Mixed in with the heavy weight of knowing of Jon Kent’s status, the imagery makes for a strong portion of the book. It fully conveys how much of this war has been Hell already.

The final page is a great reveal. Campbell sets the wheels in motion for the next chapter with a full page action shot. It caps off a visually impressive chapter that fans will have much to rave about.

FINAL POINT: 8.7

Waller’s biggest blow in her attack was mortally wounding DC’s symbol of hope. Superman begins his redemption story with a solid opening chapter. Williamson juggles multiple characters with excellent writing and pacing. Campbell constructs great action along with emotionally driven moments for a chapter that shouldn’t be missed.

For this entry, the reign of Amanda Waller has begun. Planning for weeks, Waller has unleashed her plan of eliminating superheroes from the DCU. Powerless heroes serve no opposition to her Trinity Of Evil. This truly feels like the darkest time in the DCU.

Spinning out of the first chapter is a series highlighting Waller’s grand scheme. Readers will need to brace for the journey they’re about to partake. There is no happy ending on the horizon from what we have seen thus far.

ABSOLUTE POWER: TASK FORCE #1 by Leah Williams, Caitlin Yarsky, Alex Guimarães and Dave Sharpe brings the Marvel family into the crossfire!

Williams spotlights Waller’s attack on the Marvels with a steady paced tale. Using Parasite as an unwilling tracker, her cold intentions shine through. This transfers over to The Last Son. Bearing a likeness to Superman (Is this really Jonathan Kent?), the mysterious figure brings the fight to the young heroes. This carries a more lighter feel as one who reads Shazam knows. That does change when a new entrant crashes the party.

At this stage, the mood shifts dramatically. Readers watch as the Last Son starts showing areas of a break in programming. Williams leaves this point vague to allow readers to form their own theories. It is short lived but noteworthy. Form here, the events lead to an expected conclusion. Even with the final pages, Waller’s manipulations grow further with a new face falling under her wicked constructed vision.

Yarsky and Guimarães kick off events with asolid opening chapter. Seeing the fear and pain in Parasite’s face strikes a nerve with readers. Waller’s emotionless expressions proves how far she’s willing to go to secure victory.

The Rock of Eternity portion replicate classic themes with the visuals. Seeing Billy Batson and Mary Bromfield process how they are now being hunted adds to the drama. Their “back-up” makes a huge debut with a full page image. This carries into the action sequences. Events move very swiftly leading to a sudden finale of the fight. The closing pages set up the next phase very well with a final panel mirroring what the audience is thinking.

Amanda Waller’s plan stretch across the DCU with a chapter taking a closer look at her victorious ways. Williams gives readers a deeper look at the evil rising with an excellent story. Yarsky, Guimarães and Sharpe construct a focused look at Waller’s attack with the visuals. If you’re looking for a broader picture of the evil takeover, this will be one for you.

With all that going on, the lates issue of DCs longest running series takes a trip back in time. Readers can settle in for a classic era Superman story. Considering the creative team behind it, we are in for a fantastic ride.

ACTION COMICS #1067 by Gail Simone, Eddy Barrows, Danny Miki, Rex Lokus and Dave Sharpe (Back-up by Rainbow Rowell, Cian Tormey, and Romulo Fajardo jr.) throws it back for vintage time period tale.

ACTION COMICS #1067 by Gail Simone, Eddy Barrows, Danny Miki, Rex Lokus and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

Welcome back to a timeless era. Simone checks off all the boxes with this issue. Drama, action, suspense…this one has it all! Readers start with the timeless Clark-Lois reporting competition front and center. This is pushed aside with a surprising Alien invasion. Tensions mount until a dramatic entrance from Big Blue swings everything into a new plateau.

Where a fight could break out, Superman tries talking and understanding the situation. It is one of Clark’s strongest qualities: being a diplomat when needed. The conflict becomes clear but not without strings attached. Simone weaves in a fun twist in before the action commences. There are iconic Superman moments all through the aliens’ challenge. Its’ resolution leaves a great cliffhanger (or should I say “shiphanger”) ending that locks in readers for the long haul.

Barrows, Miki and Lokus go heavy into the full (or near-full) page images for this issue. IMO, this is what works best with Superman stories. The introduction with Mr. Pierce connects with the audience of the impact of losing the youth center. This is followed up with a superb introduction of Superman into the building conflict. The mix of full page with sparce panels conveys the larger-than-life aura the Man of Steel carries.

This never escapes readers sight. Once his “challenger” appears, the moment feels gigantic to match. The following action images could have been taken form a movie. It is vintage Superman. It’s fallout is a more subtle build but the last panel is one that has a few exclamation points on it before concluding! Excellent work by the team for this chapter.

The back-up story by Rowell and Tormey dives into the present struggle of Lois as the Daily Planet EIC. Rowell’s writing sets up the strong ethical conflict of interest perfectly. Tormey and the team mix in some action to soften the jabs thrown by the new boss. Great ending to carry into Lois’ next moves being in charge.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Taking the Man Of Tomorrow back in time proves to be a winning play for Superman fans. Simone brings out the best of Clark Kent with fantastic storytelling. Barrows, Miki, Lokus and Sharpe elevate the high stakes to new levels with epic imagery. This story doesn’t miss bringing back the superhero themes we all know and love. Don’t miss it.

If anyone wants to know the perfect way to start an event of, THIS is it. Waid unleashes Waller’s plans with a multi-layered front. The writing depicts a reflection of society in its flawed sense of belief. Seeing Waller weave a false narrative camouflages readers to her true intent. Its’ impact can be measured on one certain character’s reaction which spoke volumes to the threat at hand.

Seeing Batman caught off-guard is an image fans won’t be able to process. There is a sense of uncertainty that looms heavy. This is brought to a fever pitch with Waller playing a wild card that will create quite the stir. It is perfectly worded: “Waller’s not playing Chess … she’s rolling tanks”. Unveiling the true attack, the writing shows the ruthlessness of Waller. This leads right into the closing act. With the frantic scrambling, one hero seems next in line to fall. Welcome to a new age of terror.

Mora and Sánchez brings Waller’s frightening world to disturbing life. The opening sequence involving Superman sets a high tempo of suspense. This is capped off with a bold full page picture of a fallen Man of Steel. It is a defining portrait of what lies ahead.

Waller’s mannerisms also tell quite the story. The cold and stoic demeanor dominates each panel. Readers won’t be able to shake what is unfolding before their eyes. This leads into a two page splash of the true attack on display. Seeing the multi-planned onslaught raises the stakes even higher. There is no doubt of the heroes’ losing conflict. The art team gives readers a few more shocks on the way to the close. With its’ final shot, the art team caps off an event of epic proportions.

In one calculated strike, the entire DC Universe is put on notice that their time is up. Waid crafts a multi-layered story with superb writing. The electric artwork of Mora and Sánchez will leave readers in awe of the shocking and thrilling onslaught. Once the last page is read, there is no doubt the quest for power shows no mercy.

The issue is broken into three separate Stages:

Stage #1 by Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Skylar Patridge, Patricio Delpeche, and Steve Wands centers around Jay Nakamura. On Gammora Island, Waller has taken out its’ president. Nakamura is next on the list, but where does Dreamer’s loyalties lie?

Stage #2 by Waid, Chip Zdarsky, V. Ken Marion, Delpeche and Wands features the latest “recruit” of the Suicide Squad: John Starr aka Time Commander. Waller has a certain mission for Starr’s skills. The mission is not one of enjoyment. Starr is given the task of bringing back a robotic evil that took a combined effort of the Bat-Family to defeat!

Stage #3 by Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov and Wands serves as an epilogue to the “House Of Brainiac” storyline in Action Comics and Superman. With a very big loose end to address, Waller takes it upon herself to handle this variable. What results may be the final piece to her puzzle of Absolute Power!

If anyone is new to the world of Amanda Waller, this book will give you enough insight on why she is hated and feared in the DCU. Each stage shows a varying degree. The first is the effect of her presence on Dreamer.

Stage One is a heavily emotionally driven tale. The conversations with Nakamura and Dreamer will catch readers attention. Dreamer comes across as a sympathetic character caught between what’s right and what is perceived right by Waller. Where her character goes from here will be one story to watch moving forward.

Patridge and Delpeche focus much on the art on the facial reactions of the two leads. The anger and self loathing will lock in readers. The images connect how personal the actions and consequences are. In the conclusion, the panels tease what’s next. Will it be a road to redemption or slipping deeper into danger? Only time will tell.

Stage Two borrows a similar theme from the beginning stage. Starr is a reluctant character forced to work against his will. Knowing what lies ahead, the sense of danger and anxiety ring true. It serves as a gateway from Zdarsky’s Batman to the crossover. The story is a very quick one but does a fair job in explaining what is forthcoming in the event.

Marion crafts a fast moving tale with the writing team. The only moments of pause are Starr’s looks of peril. It never escapes reader’s attention as his fear of what is coming grows with each page. The near full page ending drives home the regret of what has transpired and how Starr is sinking quickly into a grave dug by Waller.

Arguably the strongest stage of all, Stage Three leaves no question at how heartless Waller can be to get what she wants. Her plan to influence an impressionable key player connects with readers. It is devious from start to finish. The concluding act drops a big exclamation point to casting the first shot into her enemies.

Melnikov brings out the best of Waller’s imposing personality. The reactions to events never rattle the head of Task Force X. This is easy to cypher when she puts her plans in motion. Seeing how she puts up a facade with the unknowing victim echoes the lines crossed for her impending victory. The stage is capped off with a full page spread welcoming the beginning of the end. Brace for impact.

Welcome to a new era of danger courtesy of Amanda Waller. Each stage serves as a compliment to previous stories, but is a solid entry point for new readers. The writing goes to great lengths to amplify what Waller is capable of. The art plays off the emotional pull of the reluctant characters turned pawns in the quest for Absolute Power.

Let’s see if what they say is true…Does the house always win? Especially if it’s the HOUSE OF BRAINIAC?

Williamson wastes no time in jumping right into the action. During his run, Superman and Lex Luthor have had a unique “frienemy-ship” to say the least. In this closing chapter, both go above and beyond in their efforts to stop Brainiac. The writing shows one making an extreme gamble. This serves as a solid back-drop to the overall cinema-esque style battle raging on.

The conclusion of conflict is one that hits the mark. Brainiac is displayed with some very key reactions to the action at hand. Once the fallout begins, scenes become chaotic with the pacing. It reflects the time sensitive challenge the heroes are up against. In the aftermath, there are some feel-god moments to close with. However, the final few pages with have readers buzzing to what is down the road (pending Absolute Power).

Sandoval and Sánchez construct a pair of two page splashes that readers won’t want to turn the pages from. It instantly builds the rising action. The art showcases the wide ranges of Brainiac’s emotions. Events take place that disrupt the cold, imposing figure. In its wake lies a broken and unsure figure. The art captures the rage of Superman while gifting Brainiac some knowledge he can’t comprehend.

The conclusion plays out as expected. There’s a few images that will jump out to readers. None might be bigger than a Luthor panel and the final page. Both spell disaster for the Man of Steel. They both will have fans attention in the upcoming months as well.

“House Of Brainiac” closes in an explosive finale. Williamson gifts fans with big action and stronger heroics with the writing. Sandoval, Sánchez and Maher construct a electric and chaotic showdown with the art. As impactful as that is, just wait for the final page!

Coming off a shocking debut, The Brainaic Queen sets out to acquire more power. Standing in her way is a weakened Superman and embarrassed Lobo. Williamson quickly establishes the Queen’s long-term plan. The writing speeds into the action with a big set-up. The payoff is met with some added steps before concluding.

The “odd couple” paring of Superman and Lobo shines in this exchange. It gives the audience the “hero” comeback that is needed. The initial battle concludes somewhat quickly though. Some might feel this is underwhelming, but they have to keep in mind, there’s one more chapter left.

The story’s pace causes the focus to go back on Brainiac. With a big group of characters involved, Williamson makes ample time to start wrapping up individual plot points. Shifting gears in this manner works to send the story into a definitive final place.

On board, Lex Luthor and Supergirl are on the run in Colu, the home city of Brainiac (long thought destroyed). While evading detection, Luthor answers a question looming: Why was he working with Brainiac. The answer isn’t cut and dry, but it’s a Lex answer. An unlikely hero jumps into their path to help save them for now, but is it too late?

The closing moments packs quite the impact. Readers will be in shock and awe of what Brainiac has done. A new factor has entered this equation. Seeing Lex appear to be concerned for Brainiac’s plans speaks volumes. It all combines for a shocking final act. Once the new entity makes their presence known, the writing leaves no pause for their arrival. It is a brutal conclusion mixed with shocking reactions. Fans will be on edge until the next chapter drops.

The art team gifts readers with gigantic images throughout this issue. Explosive two page splashes back to back sets the Superman and Lobo fight into high gear. It is balanced with the facial reactions of Luthor. While running from Brainiac’s forces, the emotions range from worried to concerned.

Meanwhile, Supergirl and Conner Kent have escaped from Brainiac’s holding cell. Being miniature size doesn’t help their cause. Getting some unlikely help, the pair returns to normal size after dodging danger. With a small team in place, they make a run to take over the ship. This fails to succeed as Brainiac confronts them. With prisoners back in control, the unthinkable is revealed.

Readers watch as Brainiac reveals a secret that sends shockwaves. What has the collector of worlds been working on? As for our heroes, the unlikely duo is halted in their travels. Once the new offer is made, the match becomes lit.

Brainiac’s time is centered around his goal. The reveal is a monster one knowing the character. Williamson almost makes it a sympathetic gesture by the collector of Worlds. This becomes quickly dismayed as the heroes ignore the reason and continue their fight. The dialogue shows Brainiac back to full form and this spells nothing but a win for readers.

Sandoval and Mendonca welcome in the action with a fantastic two page full splash. Lobo’s reaction to Superman calling the shots makes for a fun break in the story. Williamson introduces Tribb, Czarnia’s lead strategist as a blunt and direct force. Her conversations with Brainiac demonstrates how impactful knowledge is to both. The fallout of their meeting displays a unique twist leading into the present timeline.

Galmon hits readers with a stunning two page spread showcasing the two worlds in question. The images of Tribb and Brainiac feature their test of will. This leads to a more dire result with the cold Brainiac never flinching. It’s a solid lead into the next story.

Once defeated, Joker is transported by the pair to Arkham Asylum. Even put in a straightjacket, Batman warns the doctor nearby to be careful. The doctor hears the warning and the heroes leave. Suddenly, the doctor reveals he’s wearing a mask. Behind the disguise is non e other than Lex Luthor!

Readers see that Luthor breaks Joker out for a mission all their own. A map of a madman could lead to immense power. For all his smarts, Luthor and his team can’t crack its code. The solution: bring in another madman to break the encryption. Simple, right?

With these two combustible personalities, its anything but. Their path leads into places that defy logic. On the way, their conversations provides an insight that will be a hit with the audience.

Will this pair reach their goal? The final act provides a definitive answer as it marks a beginning of a deadly new pairing for years to come.

Waid dives back into the first meeting theme with another great chapter. The dynamic between Luthor and Joker has always been a tense one. Waid never lets that escape the pair’s different motives for their caper.

Pacing helps keep the unpredictability rolling through the story. The best example of this is the pint where Luthor and Joker have a “heart to heart” about motivation. This moment lights the match for the eventful blow-up later. Let’s face it, with the Joker involved, does anything run smoothly? The closing act plays into what some may expect, but its not a bad thing. Events wrap up with an excellent final page. It leaves a lasting point for stories to follow involving these two legendary evils.

The art captures a vintage time early in the World’s Finest time. Joker has a classic purple suit of the times. Pugh shows the insanity of the Joker in a mid-panel, demonstrating them being “twinsies”.

This leads into a journey reflecting the script key Joker is translating. The images give a sense of magic and wonder. This gets a break with a full page panel showing the breakdown from Luthor and Joker’s perspective. The back and forth game between the pair exemplifies the unpredictability of their team-up. The parting image is a solid way to end one chapter and start many more throughout the years.

While on the ground, he hears the plans this team has for him. They want to recruit Superman to their Lex Luthor Revenge Squad. The addition would be the ultimate factor in crushing Luthor for his past actions against the group.

Previous, the story focuses on Lena Luthor (Lex’s daughter) consulting the SuperCorp AI about her file. Readers see the cold reaction Lex has towards his child. Lena’s grandmother walks in and discusses what was divulged.

Readers see how the building to Superman’s return went down. From the deadly duo’s initial moves to Letica’s eventual betrayal, the final moves are set in place for Superman’s return. Once he is taken down, there is little options left.

How does Superman survive this situation? The drama ramps as it appears all is lost. Once the final pages begin, readers see why no matter what, few people understand Superman like Lex does. Gog is planning on leading Earth’s heroes into a war with APOKOLIPS. This is stopped by Batman, Superman and some notable DC heroes.

However, it’s not enough to stop Darseid from entering the fray. Gog has something he wants: a part of the Anti-Life equation.

This issue begins with the shocking looks of the remaining DC heroes. Superman teams up with his Earth-22 counterpart to slow Darkseid down. Batman signals for the others to regroup. The action ramps up as two Kryptonians try the impossible. Their efforts fall short. Other heroes try but fall short as well.

Once the dust settles, Darkseid attempts takes his shot at Gog. The only one left to stop him is Magog! What chance does the young hero have?

Readers see quickly that a choice is made that changes everything. It’s fallout challenges the two title characters more than anyone realizes. This leads into an emotional closing act that divulges many secrets. It’s a fitting conclusion that does proper justice to the original 1996 series. Brace for a highly impactful ending.

There is always a fine line of what defines a hero. With Waid’s first venture into this theme, readers witnessed how a drastic action can cause a spiral out of control. The journey of David Sikela has echoed that idea. The tutelage of Superman vs. Gog gives a backdrop to the presence of Darkseid. Sikela’s action hits readers with a painful picture of the future.

The writing showcases the bond between the World’s finest as well. With the closing act, their friendship support carries the heroes through a dark moment. This leads to a powerful close, circling back to what inspires all heroes: hope.

Mora and Bonvillian cap off events with strong imagery. Right from the start, the image of Darkseid and the heroes’ reaction sets a high bar for the remainder of the chapter. The fight scenes play off as bold and eye-catching each panel. After Sikela’s actions, the reactions of all parties range from shock to anger.

The full page panel of a haunting presence will full grab readers’ attention. This leads into a fantastic full page panel that answers some lingering questions. There is also a two-page spread that pays a great homage to the original source material. The chapter ends on such a high note that fans will want to dive back in just to stare at the art over and over alone.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

The Return to Kingdom Come doesn’t disappoint as the World’s Finest face a threat that hits close to the heart. Waid orchestrates an intense fallout with Mora providing mind-blowing visuals to bring the story to a thunderous close. This issue continues to cement this series’ place as one of (if not) the best superhero book at the LCS each time out.

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of DC Comics’ premier super-hero team’s first leading event. Coming out of the “Dawn Of DC”, the Titans have stepped into the void left with no Justice League. With an alien attack heading to Earth, the team went to intercept and stop. In the process, one of their own became a pawn of something sinister lurking in the shadows.

The chapter begins with Peacemaker coming to from his encounter with Nightwing. Amanda Waller tells him to stay still as there is a battle in front of them. The combatants? Raven and her evil self, who was the masked Doctor Hate!

Raven teleports Nightwing away before the fight begins. Knowing Waller’s plans, the Titans put forth a plan to save the infected population. The spores from Beast Boy have caused humans to turn into savage beasts. Drawing the spores out is the only way to save people. Knowing that the spores gravitate towards powerful beings, Superman (Jon Kent) is the go-to for the test run. Who is their test subject? An infected Bruce Wayne aka BATMAN!

Readers see how Nightwing’s plan plays out. Batman reverts back to human and reconnects in an emotional moment. From here, the Titans lead the charge in preventing Waller and the Bureau of Sovereignty from taking their plans to action. Will they pull it off?

The answers are provided in a conclusion that lives up to its’ hype. The moments feel huge with consistent pressure mounting on the heroes. Just when readers think all is going to be ok, a few swerves are thrown in that will play into more stories. The time of Beast World might be over but fans will be talking about this conclusion for quite some time.

With Taylor mixing in many surprises, readers have a great deal to look forward to with this finale. Seeing the emergence of Dick Grayson as the leader of the DCU heroes, his biggest challenge is met with patience and flaws. It’s not a perfect run with what he is attempting. Taylor’s writing reflects the heroic nature of what he represents. The moment with Batman sets forth a strong chain of events that pushes the charge forward.

The sheer defiance of Waller is another big element of this book. Knowing she is the mastermind behind the public attack, there is a sense of danger whenever she is on he page. Her conclusion in this story sends shockwaves throughout the DCU. The overall conclusion takes readers on a wild ride of excitement and drama. This leads to the epilogue which guarantees the new movement of evil in the DCU is far from over.

The art teams (three in total) shine in the finale. The fight sequence with Raven and Doctor Hate gave readers a sinister feel as the battle prolonged. The reconnection of Batman and Nightwing gave a brief break of the drama for a more sympathetic element with the Bat-Family.

The panels where Nightwing presents his plan to the government also hit the marks. The showcase of Grayson’s confidence leads into the heroes attempt to thwart Waller’s advances. These lead into some outstanding images of the heroes rising to the occasion. The final image is a fitting one for the conclusion but is upstaged by the epilogue. Knowing this is Reis’s final DC series before heading to Ghost Machine, the parting shot sends readers off in style and shock before its’ next phase.

Amanda Waller always has a plan. With the rise of the Titans in the Justice League’s place, Waller sets forth a movement which spells nothing good for the DCU heroes.

Using Doctor Hate to manipulate Beast Boy’s form as Starro, Waller has unleashed a public attack on Earth. People are turning into animal hybrids. Even with the efforts of the heroes to try stopping the mayhem, they are only having small success. As the public watches, Waller works in the shadows to push her own agenda.

Using a hesitant Chester Runk (aka Chunk), who can unleash a “black hole” opening to another dimension, Waller teleports him inside Logan’s unconscious gigantic husk. The use of his powers kills him and Logan.

As this chapter opens, the heroes trying to stop Logan pay their respects to their fallen ally. One hero isn’t in the mood to grieve. Raven, fellow Titan and Gar’s girlfriend notes that someone else was pulling some strings and she intends to give them some payback.

On Earth, a press conference is taking place in Washington. The president is acknowledging the actions of the Bureau of Sovereignty for taking out Logan. He also brings the mastermind behind the attack into the public eye. Waller addresses the public and sells the story of protection from the superheroes.

Readers see her paint the picture of Runk as a noble citizen risking it all for their safety. With the ploy of swaying public opinion to her cause, Waller drops another bombshell with her next plan of attack.

How desperate is Waller willing to go? Readers find out quickly that there is a reason Waller is one of the most feared forces in the entire DC Universe. How will the heroes react?

As the playing field is now set, it’s race against time for the Titans as Waller’s plans are in full motion. The closing act gives more clarity onto where things head now, but the final image sets forth an unseen dynamic. With the stakes being raised higher, all bets are off to the fate of the DCU after this event.

If readers weren’t sure why Amanda Waller is such an imposing force in DC Comics, Taylor devotes an ample amount of page time to drive that point home. The writing reflects how driven she is without a shred of emotion affecting her. Once readers realize what she’s planning on doing, it brings a sense of fear and shock to the levels to secure victory.

There is a conversation involving Nightwing and Waller that sets up an ultimate chess match of good and evil. The dialogue involved hits multiple points with one verbal jab that goes for a knockout. The rest of the issue focuses on reacting to Waller’s moves. This builds into an emotionally charged closing pages. The final panel sets up many questions as Taylor is pulling out more shocks to usher this event into its’ next phase.

The art duties are spilt for this tale. Reis brings the coldness of Waller’s address to the pages with a intimidating feel. the mannerisms in which she drives her points will send a clear message to the audience about the way she is willing to conduct business. This counters Raven’ reflections of losing her boyfriend due to Waller.

There are a few action sequences to break up the heavy dialogue. It adds more to the confrontation in the latter portion of the book. Once that moment kicks off, readers begin to see the start of a true test of wills. This all leads to a shocking parting image which leaves many questions. With the new dynamic involved, it is anyone’s guess where Waller’s plans take readers next.

The reveal of Amanda Waller’s plans drives home the sense of danger surrounding “Beast World”. With Taylor’s unapologetic approach to Waller’s vision leading the way, readers will get caught up in the creative team’s positioning of key players with their strong artwork. With the fate of the DCU now in the crossfire, readers can’t afford to miss this story.

On Earth-22, there is one ruler: COG! He has taken on an apprentice: David Sikela aka Thunderman. Cog gives him a new name: MAGOG. The name means “Gateway”. Magog is imperative to his plans of leading the heroes of Earth into a war on APOKOLIPS! Cog sells the dream of divine ascension following him into battle. Little does anyone know, this is all a ruse for something more evil.

With Sikela’s powers used to fuel this trip, Cog is on the brink of success. Luckily, his plans are interrupted by an unlikely group.

Batman and Superman are joined by their Earth-22 counterparts, who have been swayed to see through Cog’s lies. With the Batmen focusing their attack on Sikela, The Supermen take aim at Cog! The battles become intense as one refuses to see the truth while another is blind from his own delusions.

Readers bare witness to battles fitting of the stakes. Even with a major turning point, can the heroes find a way to win? Judging by the final page, there is a whole other level of danger that just entered the game of good vs. evil.

Even with all the action, Waid keeps things geared around Sikela’s destined path. The initial moments with Cog selling his plan creates a sense of uncertainty with the young follower blindly absorbing the lies. Once the heroes arrive, the shift in the story is undeniable.

The Supermen showcase the unending hope synonymous with the Man of Steel. Even in the face of danger, the unending hope never stalls. Meanwhile, Batman trying to reason with Sikela are moments that will stick with the readers. The end results provide an aura of excitement leading into the shocking final page. There’s always a high level of writing with this series and much for fans to enjoy.

Few come near the artistic heights of action like Dan Mora. The heroes make a dramatic entrance with a full page panel. From here, the pace never slows down. The art mirrors the rage and emotions with trying to stop Cog at all costs. In between all the fighting, the close up’s of “Magog” prove how Batman’s words are just as sharp as his strikes.

The fallout results one epic two page spread starting the next round of conflict. Mora and Bonvillain bring an end to a fight with a superb full page. The lettering of Wands ends events with a huge exclamation point. That said, the closing page will have readers talking and singing the praises of the creative team. It is no wonder why this series gets the accolades it does every time a new chapter drops.

With time slipping away, a final attack is launched. the World’s Finest are the only thing standing between life and death on Earth-22. The question is: will it be enough? Waid provides the foundation with emotional writing. Paired with the dynamic visuals of Mora, Bonvillian and Wands, and all shall be revealed in another excellent chapter.

SUPERMAN #9 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re returning to the City of Tomorrow to find out the status of the Man Of Steel! Under the “Dawn Of DC”, the SUPERMAN line of comics have been thriving with incredible stories. One of the biggest break-outs in the line has been Superman. The classic storytelling has given a fresh take on the dynamic of Supes and Lex Luthor.

The creative team has been crushing it right out of the gate. That said, Fans are getting a special treat for the next few issues. Joining the ride is an Eisner winning artist that has been making an impact in Bludhaven for a while now. Let’s see what visuals are crafted in Metropolis under his artistic style.

Superman is left in a weakened state following his encounter with Sam Stryker aka The Chained. The current “frienemy” status with Lex Luthor becomes even more strained. Lex Luthor is dealing with the return of his mother, Letica and daughter Lena. Meanwhile, Dr. Pharm and Mr. Graft are still looming to finish their revenge of Lex and anyone who steps in their way.

The issue begins with Lois Lane reading Superman fan letters. It is revealed that Superman is laying unconscious from the fallout of his latest battle. Readers see a quick trip through Lois’ memories as she recomposes to start reading letters again.

Metropolis as a whole is still reeling from The Chained’s attack. Normally, Lex Luthor would be a prime candidate to swoop in. However, Lex is still behind bars and dealing with a more direct threat: his mother. Knowing that she and his daughter are making waves isn’t good for anyone.

Moments later, a weakened Superman awakens. He wants to go after Pharm and Graft but is in no condition to do such. How does the Man of Tomorrow deal with this? Readers see a creative solution that leads into a conflict long the making. The outcome readers won’t see coming as events unfold that take this new chapter into an unlikely direction. Just wait for the closing arc and buckle in for a can’t miss story!

Williamson masters capturing the essence of Turth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow with this issue. The opening pages reflect Superman’s place being a symbol of Hope to the world. Having Lois reading the fan letters instantly connects the emotional impact of a fallen Superman. The personal connection shines through as well once readers see her relive the private memories. Ultimately when he awakens, Superman comes off as the ever vigilant hero trying to stop evil no matter the cost.

The supporting cast has great moments to shine as well. The dynamic between Lex and his mother jumps out. Seeing Lex on the defense is a rare sight but conveys the looming threats building. The action speeds up nearing the latter half of the book. The closing act plays into a creative surprise which is sure to have readers locked in for the long haul.

Redondo jumping in for art duties makes a big splash. The moments with Lois reading the letters pours of emotion and heartbreak knowing how dire things are. Following a great full page panel, a simple 9 panel page by Redondo and Lucas puts a big exclamation point on the effect this is having on Lois.

The action sequences are bold with a thunderous entry for the Man Of Steel. The full page shot sets the tempo for the conflict. The two-page spread combines a few different looks before closing with a couple strong visuals. The closing act is constructed very well, closing with a final image that will have fans talking!

With Redondo’s amazing visuals leading the way, the latest arc of the Man Of Tomorrow soars to a new level. Williamson’s excellent writing balances out the classic storytelling with the creative team to give fans an adventurous new tale that needs to be added to your collection!
