GREEN LANTERN #20 by Jeremy Adams, Jack Herbert, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Adams delves into two very different stories for this chapter. The first brings the tragic soul of Erastus to the forefront. An overwhelming sense of failure fills the mood. Seeing the slow build into the rageful being makes his encounter all the more sympathetic. The battle with Jordan plays out as any traditional fight would go. Its’ outcome will hit readers with a solid conclusion. This is a big contrast in comparison to Rayner’s mission.

From the beginning, the danger is downplayed by Rayner’s humor. An homage to a Hollywood character says all that’s needed to the readers. The pairing of Superboy to this provides more fun moments. Contrasting personalities make for the best moments. The outcome gives another healthy shot of excitement before it’s final page. Once here, events turn towards a more serious approach. A true threat has arrived which may be too much to handle. The writing provides a steady close to readers to ponder over.

Herbert establishes the failing sense of Erastus right from the jump. The facial reactions (even the subtle ones) build towards his eventual breaking point. A half page image introduces readers to the final version of Erastus. Jordan’s reactions elevate his foe. The big confrontation doesn’t disappoint. There’s plenty of vintage GL action involved here. Once the smoke clears, a somber tone floods the panels. Jordan’s body language perfectly compliments the tragic showdown at hand.

Rayner’s journey starts off with a full page glimpse of The Source Wall. As the heroes decent onto the wall, a fun visual is added into the mix. Seeing Rayner pull off a certain adventurer will put a smile on readers’ faces. This energy carries through each panel in play. Another great full page image sends the heroes into the close. Herbert and Fajardo Jr. construct one last full page image to depart with. It does its job of leaving readers wanting more as events start taking shape.

Ferigato and Fernandes pace out panels very well right from the start. The build to Marshall taking flight is good. It gives readers an insight to where things are now. A two page splash alludes to a return to normalcy. As the issue progresses, it is far from that. The images of downtown Chicago drive home the painful fallout of the war. Even as Marshall has a date, the sense of doubt lingers through him.

The podcast playlist image leads belief of Marshall dealing with public opinion. His mannerisms as he listens speaks of someone who’s still coping. There isn’t much time for him to fully grasp this. A case he shows up for proves to be much more dangerous than he thought. The art team presents a dire picture. It is one that sticks to Marshall as he ventures to the web. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With the search for answers growing, this latest chapter leans into building distrust. Palmer and Choi are forming cracks in their partnership. This is all circling around how to handle their friend on the run. The question is posed out loud: what’s more valuable - the man or the project. In the opening sequence, it appears the latter. Readers watch as Palmer’s drive might be more harmful than good.

Captain Atom is growing into a sympathetic figure through this early stage. Pacing continues to tease the eventual turning. It also tries building up a large payoff later. The bear sequence is a surprising one. The fallout seems to get a desired, if not temporary, result. Once events shift back again to the present, the story becomes more clear. Judging by the final pages, there is more mystery getting added to what the endgame here truly is.

Perkins and Lucas starts events off with a full page Atoms image. The pair’s slow decent is clearly written on their faces. It is contrast to the many sides of Captain Atom. With the multiple time jumps, the art conveys the evolution of his current state. This excels when he finds who or what has his powers.

The full page reveal kicks off a wild confrontation. A two page splash throws everything into high gear. Lucas’ coloring brings the power struggle to a high point. The fallout is tied together with a great full page vision. As the final pages start, the mood shifts back to a grim tone. Readers watch as the final full page gives a haunting message as the fate of Captain Atom is still an unsolved enigma.

OVERALL GRADE: 7.8

The Atoms’ quest for answers starts breaking at its seams with the latest issue. Parrott and Ridley peel back more layers to the overall picture. Perkins, Lucas and Abbott display a wide spectrum of times with a hero’s journey of discovery. With the continuous climb, readers are expecting a monstrous payoff. Only time will tell how this wraps up.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #4 (DC COMICS)

Kal-El is on the run. After an encounter with the Lazarus Corp., the Last Son Of Krypton made some enemies. One soldier looking for more information is Lois Lane. Lane’s initial run-in with El has begun to consumer her. This doesn’t sit well with some new players known as the Omega Men. Something has to give.

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #4 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola and Becca Carey brings forth another explosive chapter to the Absolute Universe.

Let’s take a closer look at what is unfolding now!

ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN #4 by Jason Aaron, Rafa Sandoval, Ulises Arreola and Becca Carey (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Aaron moves the spotlight to Lois Lane for the majority of the issue. Right from the start, Lane’s journalism skills start appearing in her soldier persona. Readers watch as she starts interviewing Superman witnesses. The quest for knowledge leads her into a needed conversation. General Sam Lane comes across as a gruff, concerned parent. It plays well of Lois’s inquisitive mind. The result ushers in some new (and old faces) into the field.

Readers watch as the Omega Men are introduced. Aaron twists their familiar concept. The run-in starts turning into a “cat and Mouse” confrontation. This only becomes more complicated with Peacemakers. With an inflated cast for this chapter, pacing steers into a direct close. It is vintage Superman that scores big. The end results tie back to a loose plot point.

Seeing Peacemaker Smith go through the Lazarus Corp. protocol makes quite the impression. It may seem telegraphed in parts but doesn’t miss its’ landing. This throws the closing pages in flux. With Superman out of the picture, One Peacemaker does the unthinkable. It is a moment that is sure to come back to haunt Lazarus Corp. later. Where this now leads is anyone’s guess.

Sandoval and Arreola set up the interviews in a very throwback way. Using a 9-panel grid adds more context to what begins here. The slower pace fades when Lois must discipline a Peacemaker. A full page image of Lois handling business launches her portion. The banter with her father conveys another story. Each panel amps Lois’ disinterest in what she’s told. Much like her DCU counterpart, when she’s focused, Lois takes over situation like few others.

The Omega Men are presented in a vastly different light. Their use in this story is much more direct than lax. A near full page reveal shows their leader. Panels reflect the highly intense fight. With a red shroud crashes the party, the action goes even higher. It concludes with a vintage Superman power move. Little does anyone realize that Peacemaker Smith has done wrong. A near full page panel brings the horror front and center. Is the world ready for what’s next?

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

With forces maneuvering. Krypton’s last son hits readers with a very thought provoking issue. Aaron pens a tale of drive hidden behind the action. Sandoval and Arreola lock in on the viewpoint of Lois as the latest chapter moves forward. Readers had better brace for what lies on the last page. Don’t miss it!

BATMAN #157 (DC COMICS)

Gotham City is about to say goodbye to some old friends. After 32 issues, Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jiménez conclude their run on “Batman”. The pair have pushed Bruce Wayne to the edge and back. From “Failsafe” to “Joker: Year One”, there hasn’t been a shortage of exciting tales.

It is no surprise that their final story pulls out all the stops. “The Dying City” has cast a new light on Jim Gordon. Readers watched The Riddler form an uneasy alliance with the Court Of Owls. The result may lead to a global catastrophe. If that wasn’t enough, a new Rogue has entered the game.

BATMAN #157 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Tony S. Daniel, Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles sees the Dark Knight take one last shot to save Gotham from falling.

Let’s not wait any longer & dive into this conclusion!

BATMAN #157 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Tony S. Daniel, Tomeu Morey and Clayton Cowles (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

In this parting chapter, Zdarsky swings big. The overall sense of failure weighs heavy on both Batman and Gordon. During his run, both have had set-backs. Batman’s strained family relationship. Gordon’s fall from grace. The writing brings out their true selves. This is evident with Batman’s daredevil attempt to stop Kull from returning to Russia with Riddler’s info.

Pacing keeps rising as stakes become insurmountable. Even when there is one victory, the gravity of Gotham’s last stand never leaves the reader. Zdarsky throws in a few layered showdowns towards the closing act. None might be larger than the face-off internally. Between the action is a struggle. It perfectly brings events full circle with both leads. The result is a bittersweet ending. The conversation between Batman and Gordon puts perspective on the past while closing the chapter with new promise. No better way to say goodbye for now but hopefully not forever.

Jiménez is joined by Daniel for this final outing. Right from the start, Jiménez brings a dramatic flair to the aerial escape. Readers can’t help but be swept up in the chase. It concludes with a bold image of Batman lunging at his latest foe. The mid-panel shot throws a huge exclamation point on this portion.

It is equally matched for Daniel’s portions. The showdown between Riddler and Gordon had been building. Seeing both release their anger lives up to the build. It also provides Gordon something he has been searching for: internal acceptance. With his involvement in Mayor Nakano’s death, the art deals with his tortured conscience. Readers get this moment of calm before the main event starts.

Jiménez closes out the action with a brutal fight. Each panel becomes filled with tensions. Batman realizes there is no turning back. The sheer ferocity of this match connects. It leads into a surprising end before the epilogue. Daniel brings out the pent-up feeling from the heroes. Their reactions speak volumes to the guilt they have been carrying. It leaves readers with a spectacular parting image. A full page vision of Batman via Jiménez ends events with a hopeful thought for what’s next. A bittersweet ending indeed.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.6

Zdarsky and Jiménez leave it all in the pages as their epic run concludes! The thrilling last stand of Gotham is cemented with strong writing and phenomenal art. Readers simply can’t afford to pass on saying goodbye and hope this pair returns to Gotham’s streets sooner than later.

GREEN LANTERN #19 (DC COMICS)

The Book of Oa stolen. It is now in the possession of Sorrow. With its’ content in evil hands, danger grows. Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps are back in action. Opposing them is a growing number of "fractal" lanterns. There’s no rest for the weary as duty calls the emerald heroes.

GREEN LANTERN #19 by Jeremy Adams, Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, Jason Paz, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Dave Sharpe launches the newly reformed Corps into “the Fractured Spectrum” saga!

Let’s take a closer look at where things stand now!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Adams dives into the new beginnings for Hal Jordan and company. The opening of this issue delves into Carol Ferris’ life as a JLU member. Seeing Ferris hold her own amongst the DCU’s heavies provides a fun set-up before Jordan crashes the party. With the two getting some quiet time, The writing blends their hero worlds with their relationship. It’s a solid break before events shift towards another familiar face.

Kyle Rayner’s mission with Odyssey leads to another addition to the cast. Readers will be amped up to see who’s added into the book rescue mission. Pacing devotes a lengthy period to get this all established. Once settled, the story briefly spotlights Sorrow’s alliance. There is a larger picture painted in the closing act. The case lead provides more surprises. None might be larger than the final page. It leaves many questions as the latest saga finally starts taking shape.

This issue has three artists on taking the image reigns. The Justice League conflict opens with a full page action splash. It shows the readers how the team is working. As the threat starts growing stronger, Hal Jordan crashes the conflict. The full page intro changes the mood. Ferris’ reaction beams with excitement. This is a stark difference than Batman’s brooding. Jordan and Ferris never let the audience escape their bond as events are playing out.

Rayner experiences more of the same with Odyssey. The full page shot grants the time traveler access to the issue. Odyssey isn’t the only one with a full page welcome. A recruited heavy hitter is gifted the same favor. Readers watch as the contrasting personalities light up the panels. As events steer back toward the mission, the art team changes the look for the closing act. The pages carry a dark tone until the final reveal. A closing full page splash is at the end of a haunting lead-in. It will have readers guessing what’s next as the story takes shape.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.2

The “Fractured Spectrum” starts its’ saga with a great jumping point. Adams’ writing sets the stage as the Lanterns brace for the chase. The art team construct the ever-evolving tale with a mix of heroics and personal reactions. There’s much room to grow from what is sure to be a classic Lantern tale in the making.

BATMAN SUPERMAN : WORLDS FINEST #35 (DC COMICS)

The World’s Finest have fought for good in many locations. Alternate dimensions. Different timelines. Wherever they have gone, Batman and Superman make their presence felt. One place out of their element is Atlantis. Under the water, there is one king: Aquaman. When the King calls for help, you had better believe the pair is diving head first into danger!

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #35 by Mark Waid, Adrián Gutiérrez, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands (DC Comics) kicks off a brand new underwater adventure!

Let’s take a deeper dive into the latest saga!

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD’S FINEST #35 by Mark Waid, Adrián Gutiérrez, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid takes readers into the depths with this latest installment. Adding Aquaman into the mix provides a fun dynamic. The banter between him and Robin keeps things light-hearted until its’ time to spring into action. Once here, things change drastically. The outbreak of a virus causes havoc. It also pushes various parties to the brink of war.

Lori Lemaris and King Ronal have conflicting views of more heroes involved. Waid plays off the history of Lemaris and Superman very well. It even draws out a smile from Batman. The good feelings don’t last for long. Readers watch as there is more unravelling taking place. Once the play is made, the World’s finest is on their defensive. It also puts Aquaman into a crossfire. The orchestrated attack seems to have a surprising mastermind behind it. Judging by the last page, fans are in for a very wild ride.

Gutiérrez and Bonvillain bring an exciting vision of the seven seas to life. The opening full page shot of Poseidonis and Tritionis gives a small insight to the larger issue later on. Seeing how the virus is infecting connects with readers. It’s a vast contrast form the peaceful moments with Aquaman and the other heroes. The art gives a calmer picture before heading head first into conflict.

Once underwater, the action sequences start to take off. This leads to a reunion of Superman and Lemaris. The reactions of the characters display tells of an underlying issue in wait. Ronal’s disdain for Superman is clearly evident. This plays into their conflict later in the chapter. Aquaman doesn’t escape the anger either. The people of his kingdom unite in a striking group shot (which pops due to Wands lettering). Pacing moves things right along as the conclusion hit. The last page reveals a shocking figure via full page spread. It will definitely catch readers for a loop. Leave it to the creative team to end things on such an exclamation point.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

The World’s Finest plunge into danger with their latest tale. Waid’s writing sets up a multi-layered front. Gutiérrez, Bonvillain and Wands construct a strong vision of conflicts under the sea. This will be one for fans to check out.

THE QUESTION: ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER #3 (DC COMICS)

Renee Montoya’s latest case is a doozie. As the new security on the JL watchtower, Montoya seeks answers. Kenn Kawa is left for dead. The evidence points to Batwoman. With the past personal relationship weighing in, Is Montoya’s judgement clouded? There’s little time to process as the Eradicator has entered the field. This problem might be more than The Question can possibly answer.

THE QUESTION: ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER #3 (DC COMICS) by Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Willie Schubert continues to expose the attack on the Justice League’s home turf.

Let’s take a closer look at the latest installment.

THE QUESTION: ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER #3 (DC COMICS) by Alex Segura, Cian Tormey, Romulo Fajardo Jr. and Willie Schubert

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Segura puts Montoya into a very unforeseen scenario. The case has spiraled into a more complex situation. Kawa being the intended target remains a mystery why. As she goes through her findings, Montoya is forced into some confrontations. The tense reunion with Batwoman proves to create a difficult path for answers. The writing never lets the tension escape until a situation forces a pivot.

With the Eradicator involved, readers watch as Montoya amps up her efforts. The methods she evokes are driven by rage. Pacing has done a great job in slowly building this reaction up. Once Montoya unloads, it makes a statement. This blinds her to what is really going on. In the shadows, moves are being made. This is very familiar in set-up. The responsible party is anything but predictable. Once the mastermind behind all of this is revealed, this moves Montoya’s efforts into a dire corner. Rest assured, the last page will lock in readers for the next chapter.

Tormey and Fajardo Jr. break down recent events nicely within the first few pages. This leads into a full page image of Montoya’s reluctant partner on the case. Coloring works perfectly on the attack of Ted Kord. The use of shadows connects with readers as the mastermind is slowly revealed.

It’s a big contrast to Montoya questioning The Eradicator. The art depicts the emotional release that’s been growing in Montoya. Eradicator’s reactions only prompt more out of the The Question. It is a scene that steals what’s happening in the background. Once the main attack begins, the mood shifts. Montoya’s reactions reflect the shocking turn of events. The panel structure raises the moments before the final page. Once there, a full page image hits as business has picked up for Montoya’s search for truth on the watchtower.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Lurking in the shadows is an unlikely truth in The Question’s latest case. Segura’s writing delves into the toll taken on Montoya while the mastermind makes their debut. Tormey, Fajardo Jr. and Schubert bring on the bad guys with strong imagery. Brace for the last page’s impact!

GREEN LANTERN: FRACTURED SPECTRUM #1 (DC COMICS)

A new era in the Green Lantern mythos begins now. After the Thaaros saga concluded, Oa has risen once more. The home of the Green Lantern Corps signifies a fresh start for the galaxy’s lawful heroes. It also brings new dangers front and center.

A mysterious figure is looking for the Book of Oa. Can Hal Jordan and company stop the Sorrow before it’s too late?

Let’s take a deeper dive into the latest space odyssey.

GREEN LANTERN: FRACTURED SPECTRUM #1 by Jeremy Adams, V. Ken Marion, Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Dave Sharpe (DC Comics) Cover: Fernando Blanco

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Adams gives readers a straight forward build coming out of a huge event. Considering all the Corps have been through with Thaaros, the mood is promising. Sorrow’s opening segment contrasts that completely. It heightens what’s forthcoming. Seeing Hal Jordan smiling and enjoying his time sets a fun pace heading into the chapter.

Seeing the corps working together is another solid moment. Kilowog’s return is already a fan-favorite event. The foreshadowing of more gives a quick diversion before the celebrations begin. Adams really gives the Lanterns a sense of repurpose. This ultimately gets disrupted by a certain party crasher. At the stage, pacing picks. up. The conflict is short lived but leaves its’ mark. Its’ fallout unveils a new thread into the Lantern mythos. This becomes a rallying point setting the course for the next big event. All in all, the writing is very solid for this lead in.

Marion and Fajardo Jr. give The Sorrow a full page splash to kick this book off. The interactions with the librarian waste no time setting an uneasy mood. It is a big contrast to Jordan in space. Each panel shows how he “found his smile again”. This leads into a great page of the Lanterns reuniting for Oa’s battery. Jessica Cruz holding court shows promise of what’s to come until Sorrow hits the scene.

Opening with a full page brawl with Guy Gardner, the latest threat makes a big impact with readers. The only downside is the conflict is brief. This leads into a striking page featuring Gardner confessing to a secret. It catapults events into the closing image. Readers will be excited to see the last panel. The image sets the tone for what lies ahead for the reunited squad.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The next phase of the Green Lantern legacy starts on a strong note. Adams’ writing delivers on constructing the drama with memorable moments. Marion, Fajardo Jr. and Sharpe present a united front bracing for a dark challenge ahead. Readers should expect big things from this latest arc.

This leads her into a final stand that will either make or break the universe. The writing is very straight-forward. Readers easily know that the stakes have never been higher. It is complimented by Static’s change of stance. With the deck stacked against them, there is a glimmer of hope left.

This is all due to Angela Alva. After capturing Hardware, Alva unloads her secrets in celebration. The Alva family history is tragic and unapologetic. This leads into a long overdue return. With the conflict escalating, the final pieces are put in place to face off. Pacing moves events right along to a solid parting spot before its’ conclusion next chapter. Readers should expect a big ending for next issue.

The art showcases how troubling things have become. Rocket’s opening sequence displays her uncertainty as things fall apart. This matches Static’s decision after meeting with his family. The moment jumps off the pages as Virgil Hawkins wears his heart on his sleeve. Readers can sense the “big fight feel” approaching with his closing panel image.

Angela Alva’s story takes up a good portion of the book. The panels primarily use a 9 panel se-up. This hones in on her family history as well as her own journey. Readers watch as the end result leaves a new figure in place via full page image. Pacing picks up pages as events start spinning towards the finish. The initial heavyweight bout is packing action. It is a monumental showdown that is poised to a strong finish. The book closes with back to back full page images. Readers have a strong lead-in towards the epic conclusion.
