For this edition, we’re checking out one of the most anticipated books from Marvel Comics in 2022! When “Avengers” is in the title, let alone a new series, you know there is going to be a certain buzz behind it. SAVAGE AVENGERS #1 by David Pepose, Carlos Magno, Espen Grundetjern & Vc Travis Lanham delivers on the hype and sets forth an exciting tale involving one of the most unique lineups of characters in the Marvel Comics Universe! Let’s not waste any more time and get savage with this deep dive, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue starts out with a mysterious stranger hiding in the background of New York City. Invisible to all, the figure moves forward looking for their target. Readers don’t wait too long to find out who this character is and who they’re after. While tearing thru a snake worshiping cult, Conan The Barbarian is confronted by none other than DEATHLOK, who’s looking to punish the Cimmerian for assaults on the time-stream. This meeting goes exactly as you would envision it ( and I wouldn’t have settled for anything less!).

The Cult that Conan was tracking down has also drawn the attention of Anti-Venom (Flash Thompson) Daredevil (Elektra). They were investigating a deadly thief in an Alchemax Lab. Weapon H have a run-in that is anything but cordial with Black Knight (Dane Whitman). In arguably the most “calm” moment in the book is the interaction with Cloak & Dagger. All these characters have their own issues going on during this time but are all drawn together during an event that shakes up them to their core! What happens next truly lives up to the name “SAVAGE”! Once all the players join the fray backing up Conan against Deathlok, the throwdown is one for the ages. The resolution though….no one could predict what happens next. The final page will have readers fired up to see where the saga goes from here!

CREATIVE BREAKDOWN

IN PEPOSE WE TRUST! Obviously if you know his previous works (and you should!), “Savage Avengers” couldn’t be in better hands. This lineup of characters is going to be very fun to read their adventures each month. BTW, What a way to open the series! From the minute Conan came barging in on the cult, the tempo for the book was set. The weapon of choice that the cult acquired is one most fans wouldn’t think of on the spot, but once I saw what it was, I marked out! Whenever I see that weapon, I immediately see that Kirby Cap cover pop up. The story involving the other characters prior to “the event” was a perfect change of pace moment. This worked extremely well with Cloak and Dagger, who seem to be the wildcards of this group. In comparison to the other members, they don’t appear to be that “savage” but I have no doubt Pepose has big things planned for the fan favorite duo. Don’t let those character moments fool you. When it came time for the action, Pepose crafted some amazing action moments that delivered for the fans. Excellent final set-up of the story to close out.

Magno really brought those action panels to life and then some with this book! Conan vs. Deathlok had that “big fight feel” that readers would expect. There were no shortages on how vicious this fight was. Mix in when the rest of the team crashes the party and you’ve got a non-stop adrenaline ride in the MCU. Those fight scenes will have fans talking for all the right reasons. Battles are brutal and define what this book should be about. Great full page shot of the team during the “I Bring You Madness” moment. The Artwork is very strong throughout this issue and I can’t wait to see what visuals are coming for the next issue’s adventures. .

FINAL CALL

Overall, Savage Avengers #1 gives readers a relentless, action packed debut that is an absolute can’t -miss addition to your pull list. Superb writing and phenomenal art ushers in this new team to the LCS. Don’t think this is “just another Avengers” book. The creative team waste no time in presenting a group of Avengers you can’t help but follow along on their stories. Make a point to get on-board now and don’t miss a minute for what is going on with this book!

Kudos to Valiant for always putting a recap page in before most issues so new readers can always jump in and catch up on a series.

The ironclads have been through a lot during their time on Xeru. From starting out as simple workers looking for the Pure to sustain the Alphan military, their journey has been anything but easy. When one of their own Sam is killed on a mining mission when Sgt. Troy leaves him to die, Peris steps up to lead the revolyt back and ultimately is responsible for Sgt. Troy’s death in retailiation. Once the group returns to their home, they are confronted by the Alphan military. Peris is taken away and the rest are almost certain to fall until some luck falls their way. Suffice to say, this group has become battle tested in a hurry.

This issue jumps in to where Lela has now taken up the leadership role and is planning on a rescue mission for Peris. There’s one problem with this: the Ironclad suits are not meant for that kind of battle but luckily there might be a way to fix that situation. Readers are about to witness the genesis of what these heroes are made of and the fight for freedom.

Meanwhile, readers meet Governor Dohman. He’s got some plans in the works and Peris plays a big part in those. What are the “Lost Suits”? All the while, Lela is bringing the troops to the forefront as they march to battle. The playing field has leveled a bit with these Ironclads making a play to fight the Alphans head on and free Peris. How will this ultimately end? It’s a gutsy call to attack but this group has had nothing to lose from the beginning. What’s one more mission, right?

The story is really starting to its’ stride with this issue. Lela has become the character that fans will be rallying around. There’s also a great moment with Jac that shows how much he’s grown as a character. This group of individuals are finally coming together as a team. Once you see the team ready to go, readers can’t help but be excited about the next phase of this story. The introduction of Governor Dohman and his plans add a nice twist to this saga as well.

Garcia’s art really shines in this issue. Readers get a great team shot as the ironclads level up. They also get some great action panels where we see how this team fares against a real threat. The breakdown of Dohman’s search for the Lost Suits caps off with a last page readers will be locked in with anticipation for the next issue of this story. This venture into another side of the Valiant Universe has been well worth the trip thus far for readers with no signs of slowing down.

Overall, Armorclads #3 continues to build its engaging story with solid storytelling and fantastic art. There’s always something new getting thrown at this group of reluctant, battle forged fighters. The hype is real & the fan reaction isn’t wrong. This side of the Valiant Universe is ever-evolving and it’s a story comic readers don’t want to miss out on. Make sure you have Armorclads in your pull list at the LCS.

The story centers around a group of supernatural vampires who have stayed in the shadows of “normalcy” by running a diner. Blending in society undetected has been one of the biggest ways of survival for this “family.” Anything else leads to a whole world of problems that they can’t afford to test. However, when one of the younger members, Alex, breaks away searching for something more. This new epiphany comes via inspirations from superheroes. After stopping a crime, Alex follows into the world of becoming a vigilante. The taste of something new attracts Joy, another younger member of the group, to join the crime-fighting ways. This doesn’t sit well with Ian and Cynthia, the oldest of the group, who know what’s at stake. Even with the do-good intentions, things fall apart in epic fashion to where we are now. The first story arc is must-read with some very epic surprises throughout that you need to read to believe.

As the "family” picks up the pieces from the fallout of their last adventure, the landscape has changed. Ian, the head of the family, has been missing. Readers do catch up on where is at and it’s a lot to process coming off the heels of issue #5. Cynthia has taken over running the diner with Alex and Joy taking a more increased role with covering shifts at the diner. Being vigilantes has to take a back seat to keeping up the illusion that everything is fine not to draw any suspicion. However, this lasts for only so long as the young duo gets some time to investigate a disturbance at the museum. What they discover is a complete surprise that unfolds into another decision for one of the family to make. Factor in that our heroes may not be the only ones fighting crime as readers get a last page that will have them talking until next issue.

Zdarsky brings back everyone’s favorite diner staff in a very solid issue. Coming off the big reveal in issue #5, Ian’s story will be the one to watch with this arc. It’s a perfect way to open the issue up. The new antagonist hits the ground running and wait till you see his first move! The back and forth between Alex and Joy gave some new perspective on their new status quo. Being superheroes is one thing but being vampires also throws a block in finding normalcy and how they perceive a way to achieve it. How these heroes handle what’s coming up next is going to be something special.

Loo brings our heroes back in a fantastic way. Bringing Ian’s story and how it ties into the past was an excellent visual. Also seeing the “villain” of this issue return was a fun twist. The strongest part was the emotional talk between Joy and Alex. Loo’s art really brought out the full emotion of what was happening there. It served as a solid reminder that there are lives behind the mask. Seeing how the world of the supernatural comes to life in these pages is really a fun treat for readers.

Overall, The All-Nighter #6 doesn’t miss a beat on its return. From the opening page, this book doesn’t let you go with excellent storytelling and art. Make sure to get your copy asap on Comixology. You don’t want to miss this book!

For this edition, we’re checking on the latest chapter on the “Charge to 100” for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic books for Boom Studios. Mighty Morphin #19 by Mat Groom, Moises Hidalgo, Raul Angulo & Ed Dukeshire continues to gain momentum in its’ first story after “The Eltarian War.” With the Rangers off world on their own adventure, evil forces have moved in on the Earth. What happen next? Let’s check this issue out and see where this story leads us now, shall we?

Mighty Morphin #19 - On Same May 11th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With the rangers away finding a new command center, Earth has been left open for some visitors to stop by and stake claim. King Aradon and his forces have shown up to Earth with only the Green & Red Rangers to stop them. Zordon is calling the gameplan to hold steady but Matt (Green Ranger) takes the lead to confront the invaders. Rocky (Red Ranger) has his young siblings with him and can’t break away to assist due to protecting his secret identity. How will this fare for our heroes?

Meanwhile, the rest of the team is in on Leonis in search of another command center. Once the “Oceans’s 11” style plan is made, the team makes their move against King Veiron. The reigning King has all the information they need to acquire their new home but securing said info isn’t going to be easy. Can the team pull off the big score here? And what did Alpha do?! Read the issue and find out.

Groom continues his run on Mighty Morphin with a very solid read. With the two stories happening here, things can easily get lost in the shuffle but at no point did I feel that happened here. Matt & Rocky’s story being Earth’s last line of defense really picked up steam with some excellent action sequences & seeing Zordon make a change in a long time Ranger rule gave it a nice spin. As for the other half, I’m really enjoying the “heist” story (even though it’s against “The Lion King” and for good reason). There’s some fun moments that readers will enjoy with that heading to next issue.

Hidalgo lets loose with the action for this issue with a great sequence involving the Green Ranger making his play against the invaders. Readers will most definitely enjoy those panels. Another standout moment was Vieron’s gala where the rangers make their move. Very cool visuals here and Alpha stole the show! Excellent final page to close the book out on.

Overall, Mighty Morphin #19 continues its’ new direction with a great issue. Excellent storytelling and art will have you invested in the next phase adventures for this team. Make sure to grab your copy at the local Comic Shops this week. You won’t be disappointed!

Grim #1 by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi, & Tom Napolitano is a very entertaining read and one that you should definitely keep your eyes out for at the local comic shops this week. Let’s deep dive into this new series and see what it’s all about, shall we?

Editor note: you KNOW it’s gonna be a great issue when it kicks off with some Blue Oyster Cult “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” playing on the first panel! LETS’ GO!!!!!!

Grim centers around a reaper by the name of Jessica Harrow. Her job: guiding the recently departed into the next phase of the afterlife. For this assignment, she’s to escort Bryan Michael Andrews on that journey. Bryan just died in a drunk driving accident seeing his ex, Abigail. From here, Jessica becomes his guide into his next phase. Bryan tries sparking conversation with Jessica asking a million questions about what’s next with very little answers to his liking.

When the table is turned on Jessica’s past, she doesn’t have much answers. Their journey comes to an end when they arrive at “the end of the line”. This case is closed so it seems until Jessica notices that something is missing. From there, her story takes a very unexpected turn that will cause some issues and raise more questions than she’s ready to answer….or find out the truth about.

Excellent first issue. Phillips writes a very dynamic character in Jessica Harrow. Readers will be locked in on her story of mystery as she’s more of an enigma than the questions about the afterlife she was asked. The afterlife voyage and destination was an interesting creation for this story. It had the usual dark elements mixed in with some slight light-hearted moments. It served as a good backdrop to the main characters here. As for the story, seeing how this simple “delivery” went awry made for a fun adventure with a solid cliffhanger for the lead going into issue #2.

Flaviano did an incredible job on art duties. Very creative way for the song lyrics in the beginning to appear as floating spirits much like Bryan was a spirit himself. The voyage to the afterlife served up great visuals as did the “retrieval mission” & Jessica’s “reaction” to what was happening there. Seeing her break from being serious about her mission and not showing any emotion to letting loose near the end will keep readers engaged for the next chapter of this book. Interesting final page as well.

Overall, Grim #1 takes readers on a wild trip through the afterlife that raises more questions than answers. This is not a bad thing as the book showcases great storytelling & eye catching art to keep the story of Jessica Harrow one to keep an eye one. Don’t fear the reaper here! Make sure to pick this up at your next trip to the local comic shop!

LOVE AND WAR #2 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

Love and War #2 by Andrew Wheeler and Killian Ng continues the rom-com story of Domo & the mystery behind Gabriel’s disappearance after their kiss the previous school year. Let’s check out the latest issue and see where the story takes us now, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

After the events of last issue, Domo has tracked Gabriel down to another school. After being held off from seeing him, Domo gets some help to see him at an open mic event later that day. Meanwhile, back at Aster Academy, the rest of the Tug-O-War team is trying to adapt to the latest arrival to the academy: Emil, who’s actions are rubbing them the wrong way.

The head coach makes a decision for “team building” by pairing members together via the tug-o-war ropes. This doesn’t sit well with most of the team, especially Domo who’s now paired with Emil. How will this play out? Can Domo meet Gabriel with Emil bound to him? Also, if he does meet, what will Gabriel say? Read the issue and find out!

Love and War continues to be a fun read. The story has a few surprises this issue and showcases interesting dynamics amongst the team. Seeing how Domo is reacting to Emil was a highlight of the book. Another noteworthy piece was Jocosta’s mission to become captain of the team while trying to take out Domo’s chances. Gabriel’s moments in the book will come off as a big surprise for readers of the book, but it adds some intrigue heading into the next issue.

Ng continues to deliver an entertaining vision of this story to readers. After coming off the more “serious” moments of the issue’s beginning, the tone of the book shifts back to light-hearted energy of issue #1. The reactions of Jocosta when giving her speech on how she will win captain was very amusing. The other members of the team had some great moments as well. It should be interesting to see where this story heads into the next issue.

Overall, Love and War #2 continues to keep its fun story moving in the right direction. Solid writing and art gives readers an enjoyable read while building in some drama to keep them invested for the next chapter. Fans of Rom-com stories will want to check this book out.

The story is set around Kay Farragher, a singer who’s based out of the Isle Of Man. Kay struggles with breaking away from her “nowhere” life to chase her dreams. After singing in front of some children for Hop-tu-Naa (otherwise known as Halloween), Kay chats with her superstitious grandmother about the future until she’s called away to pick up her drunk boyfriend. En route to do a good deed, Kay’s life gets pulled into another unexpected direction.

While driving, Kay veers off the road to avoid hitting a young girl named Mona. The car she’s in is wrecked badly. Mona claims she is running from something. While Kay originally brushes this notion off, she quickly changes her tune when a face to face confrontation sets up the long night ahead. With no car and no working phone, Kay and Mona must now find a way to survive a dangerous night with no notion of how to fight back other than with some “Cold Iron.”

Very cool first issue. Diggle sets the tone early of this book will tie into the world of fantasy and the supernatural. Kay’s story is a very relatable one that readers can side with her on. Seeing how the grandmother tried warning Kay of respecting the mythology of the night was a nice touch. Once Mona appears in the story, then this book really takes off. It’s an unlikely pairing yet doesn’t seem to be too awkward in grasping the current situation. Seeing how Kay reacts to this new world she’s walked into is going to be exciting to follow. The book also has a great cliffhanger ending for where this story goes next.

Brokenshire does a great job setting up this place of mystery. There is always a tense feel to the panels after Kay finds Mona that doesn’t let up the rest of the story. This is balanced out with Mona’s fear of whatever is looking for her to Kay’s flipping of emotions as the story progresses. Seeing Kay’s turn to panic after doubting her grandmother’s warning adds to the heightened emotions of the pair running for their lives. Readers will sense the horror movie-esque feel with this book and be very locked in for the remainder of this story of myths and suspense.

Overall, Cold Iron #1 sets up a very interesting story for fans of gripping storytelling. Solid writing and artwork give readers a great addition to their collections with what looks to be an exciting story to become invested in. Make sure to check this out on Comixology this week!

In case you’re reading Archer & Armstrong for the first time, they have been around the Valiant Universe since it’s inception in 1992. There are some classic stories in that initial run to their reboot in 2012 that are worth checking out from your LCS. Valiant also has a recap 101 page explaining the current basics to new readers in this issue as well.

Archer is a highly skilled martial artist & marksman who’s sole purpose in life was to kill “The Devil” aka Armstrong, an immortal with a knack for drinking and adventures. Once that situation was cleared up when Archer finds out the truth behind the people who raised him, these two became best friends and thus their escapades become the word of legend in Valiant lore.

For this story, Archer has to bail out Armstrong of another situation where SHOCKER Armstrong is dealing with an altercation with people “with some rakes and hoes” who steal his magical satchel while having a few beverages. During this incident, Armstrong’s ear is cut off.

Normally this would be bad, but Armstrong is immortal so it will grow back, right? Apparently not so much. With Armstrong’s immortality in question, the ever noble Archer sets out to find the truth behind this problem. Thus the adventure begins……

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS ISSUE! Now keep in mind, I’’m an old school Valiant reader & the best friends was one of my favorite books. Seeing how Foxe has brought them back, this issue couldn’t be any more perfect. It has great usage of word bubbles to explain both main characters (see panels below) so throughout the issue, when they’re doing anything noteworthy, there is an explanation or clarification for. The story gives a new twist to “Can an immortal die?” There are some exciting twists to this tale that readers can look forward to with this series.

Fiorito does an excellent job on art duties for this issue. Readers see first hand what Archer is capable of when you mess with his bestie. The description of each fighting move is a nice touch. Seeing the banter between our heroes was another great point of this issue. From Archer’s frustration to Armstrong’s devil may care reactions, this issue had stand-out visuals that really made this a truly fun read.

Overall, Valiant’s most legendary duo returns to the LCS with a can’t miss issue that will become your favorite book on your pull list. The creative team knocks it out of the park with this issue. For older readers, it captures everything you love about A&A. If you’re new to these characters, it gives you a fun and exciting adventure to jump on board with. DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS BOOK!

The story of these three individuals who proves no good deed goes unpunished has gone into some intriguing directions. After acquiring a cell phone for with some sensitive information on it, the trio of Lu, Lis and Leco have become involved with a political conspiracy involving an upcoming election. Using this info, they have tipped off Neto, a candidate in that election about what is planned against him. By taking that shot, there are individuals involved now that want to end this “problem” once and for all.

This issue kicks off with Neto addressing the public about this information. Zé Fofinho has been assigned to silence the problem and starts tracking down the cell phone holders. After last issue, Zé Fofinho’s presence is even more menacing. Our heroes now have to evade and escape Zé Fofinho but that’s easier said than done. All the while Lis makes a big move of her own. Will she be able to succeed? And there’s a cliffhanger ending that will change the direction of the story nearing its’ conclusion.

Scavone speeds up the drama with this issue. With Zé Fofinho now on the trail of our trio, readers are witnessing first hand the gravity of their actions. How Zé Fofinho goes about his work is another layer to what steps he’s willing to take to eliminate the problem. The side story with Lis is one to keep eyes on as it could be the key to getting Neto elected. Pacing was very well as all the major players had big moments in this book. Now hitting the home stretch, the final page is going to set the tone for the remainder of the book.

Cruz continues strong work on this book. The majority of the issue is focused on Zé Fofinho but it works to really show how dedicated he is to complete his mission. Great work on showing his emotions with the twists and turns that happen here. There was some excellent chase scenes here as well. Very good last page for a cliffhanger ending.

Overall, Red Tag #3 really speeds up the drama as all the major players have made their moves in this issue. With Zé Fofinho taking the lead for this issue, our trio of heroes need to somehow find a way to stay alive with a dangerous foe making his first moves. Make sure to check this series out for NCBD on Comixology!

For this blog, we’re checking out a brand new book on the Comixology Originals line via Migdal Comics. The Comixology Unlimted deal is one that all comic fans should invest in. The quality of books they have is second to none & its’ latest entry continues that trend.

The Panic #1 by Neil Kleid and Andrea Mutti is a very chilling tale that will hook readers from the start. The book will be out later this year in print via Dark Horse Comics but don’t wait until then to check this story out! As anyone who’s read this blog before, I’ve never been a huge Horror fan but this book caught my attention enough from it’s trailer that I had to take a read. Let’s not waste any more time & jump right in to see what is going with this series, shall we?

The Panic #1 - On Sale May 3rd

The book is centered around Annie Delgado and a simple commute to New York City that turns into something not so simple. As Annie and her best friend Niyati are on their way to join a protest, the PATH train that they are on mysteriously crashes underneath the Hudson River. Niyati is among the casualties on the train. Annie is now left with the remaining survivors trying to figure out how they will get out of this.

Multiple challenges face the group from this accident. Cell phones aren’t working. There is not a perceivable way to message for help. The remaining survivors are trying to form a plan but there are many clashing personalities preventing this from happening. During this, a mysterious stranger that no one remembers on the train prior to the crash is discovered. Trying to figure ou his mystery becomes the immediate problem as he’s leaving weird imagery on the train glass. How is this handled? Where are we going from here? Readers will be locked in to find out these answers during this series.

Kleid makes a strong debut for this story. Dealing with the loss of a best friend right in front of your eyes is traumatic enough but throwing Annie into a group of combustible personalities after said fact is even more soul-testing. Yet with all this going on, Annie seems to be holding it together just enough. The strongest point of this issue is seeing this group of strangers coming together (for better or worse) will all their clashing views. Mixing in social commentary along with the pandemic isn’t easy to pull off but Kleid makes it happen for this story’s beginnings.

Mutti creates a cold and grounded environment for this story to build into. No punches are pulled with the graphic fallout from the train crash. Seeing all the emotions pour out of these characters really drove this issue as well. Prime example is when Annie, dealing with her own grief, extends her hand to comfort David, a young boy on the train. Balancing all these personalities on panels was very well done. Great final shot to carry readers into the next issue.

Overall, The Panic delivers on creating a terrifying set-up for a greater story to tell. Excellent writing and imagery takes readers on a unique tour of NYC and the horrors that lie within and underneath. Make sure to check this issue out on Comixology.

Erica Slaughter has re-emerged in New Mexico investigating a serial killer. Slaughter does break away with the lone witness, Gabriella, to try getting information. However, that encounter doesn’t give her much info to work from. Erica starts scouring the town to get any information on the killer. All the while, the members of the town are trying to piece together what is going on as well. When Erica goes back to the crime scene, things do not go as planned.

Unfortunately, Slaughter won’t have that problem to solely focus on. She has now came across the radar of the House Of Cutter. They have their assignment: Take Out Erica Slaughter. Readers will be very interested to see how this starts to develop.

Tynion delivers on another great issue. The build of how Erica is working to figure this case out has been fascinating to read. The interaction with Gabriella was a strong part of this issue as Gabi’s story is a major factor of this current arc. Gabi’s relationship with the other members in town fees like there is more to her dealings than readers know yet. The introduction of the new Hunters was another strong point here as well. This should be something special by the time this arc wraps up.

Dell’edera pulls no punches with the imagery here. The opening sequences is graphic and telling at the same time. The rest of the issue is balanced well to capture the quiet moments of the town members reactions to these events. Seeing how they deal with the events gives the story a certain edge to the overall narrative. Great final image to close the issue out on as well.

Overall, Something Is Killing The Children #22 continues building forward on its latest story. Erica Slaughter's return continues to be one readers should definitely not be missing out on. Fantastic storytelling and art throughout this book. If you haven’t checked this book out yet, make a point to get this issue at the LCS this week and jump into the latest adventure.

For this edition, we’re taking a look at the latest chapter into the history of one of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers noteworthy characters. Power Rangers Universe #5 by Nicole Andelfinger, Simone Ragazzoni, Mattia Iacono, & Ed Dukeshire from Boom Studios has been a very fun read into the story behind the Phantom Ranger. With only two issues left, how does this story shape up now? Let’s jump into this issue and find out, shall we?

Power Rangers Universe #5 - on sale April 27th

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue picks up where the Spectrum Rangers bet on themselves and appear to have won. They found a way to sustain morphing without killing themselves in the process. Now powered up, they’re ready to take the fight to the Dark Spector’s forces. Readers will enjoy all the action going down in this issue. As for the Morphanaut, his battle with the general becomes more than anyone expected with revelations exposed.

This moment becomes especially emotional & ultimately becomes the reason behind a desperate but noble action he takes later in this issue. The fallout with this battle carries thru the rest of the story as our heroes think they have the momentum on their side, until a final play is made where all bets are off heading into the final issue.

Andelfinger does a nice job with the build-up for the “big” reveal in this issue. It’s another element that is connecting the Morphanaut to the readers. This entire series, they have seen him go thru so many battling emotions that once we are at this point in the story, the moment becomes greater than expected. It also adds more weight to the final page of the book knowing what was done. The rest of the issue was solid action with a good dramatic fallout bit that works. Excellent job.

Ragazzoni & Iacono really made those action scenes pop off the pages here. They were great showcases on how upgraded their power set was. The “revelation” during the fight between the General and Morphanaut was very well done. There are some great panel shots of the emotional toll in this issue to put an exclamation point on that. Fantastic final page heading into the finale.

Overall, the saga of the Phantom Ranger heads into its’ final issue on a very strong note. Solid storytelling with emotional payoffs mixed with stellar artwork makes this a can’t miss issue at the LCS this week. Get caught up now beofre next month’s finale.

As this series hits the final stretch, where do readers find our lead character now? Let’s check this issue out and see, shall we?

As B has been working for the government in exchange for finding a way to end his existence. The relationship has become very strained due to the actions of Dr. Caudwell, who has ulterior motives for working with B.

As this issue kicks off, there is an explosion of energy where B had been stationed underground. The blast kills some soldiers working the assignment and the energy taps into Diana, B’s only real “friend” in this arrangement and knocks her out. B is also missing from his chamber. Where this should be considered an absolute disaster is spun as a win by Caudwell. B’s saga during this issue is one readers need to check out for themselves cause… wow, it goes places!

Reeves and Kindt continue to take this story in some interesting directions. Caudwell finally unveiling his master plan was a cool twist to the story. It’s one that wasn’t unexpected but it also hits some strong notes on what levels this character will go to achieve his plan. B’s story is also very well set up here. There are many layers to this final arc that will have readers hooked till the end.

Garney delivers on some fantastic art in this issue. The big 2 page explosion scene really jumps off the pages. The panel set-up for B’s story this issue was very creative as well. Using a blank page to build up a moment works well for this issue. Great cliffhanger ending page to cap this issue of as well.

Overall, BRZRKR #8 answers some outstanding questions while raising more in the process. The saga of B takes some unique paths this issue but readers are guided with ease by the creative team. The book has been a fascinating read while building towards a memorable conclusion. Make sure to pick this book up at your LCS this week.

Since his return appearance, Stanchek has been drawing attention from many people of the Valiant Universe. Obviously being one of the most powerful people on the planet will do that. Having his track record of actions will cause that as well. As this series has progressed, readers have found out that Stanchek has rewired his brain (literally) and become dedicated to be a beacon of hope for the people of Psiot City. This doesn’t go as easy as planned because he has one force standing right in his way: himself. The “evil” version of Stanchek is known as the Renegade who is trying to unleash chaos on the city.

From the fallout of their initial encounter, the Renegade has been working to build up an army of Psiots to assist in his plans. Harbinger’s mission is clear to stop “himself” at all costs. Luckily, he has some help in an old friend Faith aka Zephyr along with Cici and Young Ago. While en route flying to find the Renegade, Harbinger is SHOT IN THE HEAD by the assassin Blam!

This issue picks up literally as our hero is bleeding his mind out! With Cici and Ago trying to save Harbinger, Faith goes right after Blam. All the while, the Renegade has started the initial shot on his attack on Chicago with his army ready to go. Readers get a small glimpse of what’s to come if our heroes fail. Can our hero come back from Death’s door? Readers have seen Stanchek pull off some miracle moves before. Does he have one more left in his sleeve? And if so, is he ready for the battle ahead?

Kelly & Lanzing out do themselves on story ideas with this one! Their take on Harbinger and what Stanchek is capable with his powers is such a cool take. If anyone had questions of how powerful of a character he is had them answered with this issue. When they dive into moments like his “repair work”, it turns into the strongest part of the story. With all his powers, Stanchek is as fragile as ever finding his way to “Be Better”. The rest of the characters had solid moments as well with a final shot worthy of heading into a final battle.

Rodriguez crushes another issue! Holy Smokes! The imagery of Stanchek putting his mind back together was incredible! Rodirguez’s style is such a complement to the story. The full panel pages were excellent as well as the Renegade unleashing his first attacked (last picture in this blog) There’s no book out that captures such a unique trippy feel like Harbinger. It’s one of the best books out right now with a creative team that is leaving a tough act to follow. There’s much to enjoy with this issue.

Overall, The Harbinger #7 sets the pace for an epic finale to the current chapter of Peter Stanchek. Incredible storytellig with pushing the limits of psionic powers along with fantastic art makes this a must-have at your local comic shops this week! Also, get the first volume TPB if you haven’t already!

For this edition, we’re continuing to follow the fallout of the Eltarian War in the pages of Power Rangers by Boom Studios. Power Rangers #18 by Ryan Parrott, Marco Renna, Walter Biamonte, Sharon Marino, Sara Antonellini,& Ed Dukeshire have established a new stat quo for the Omega Rangers but this issue takes them into some uncharted waters. Let’s deep dive into their latest adventures, shall we?

Power Rangers#18 - On Sale April 20th

The Omega Rangers have now set up shop on Safehaven after addressing the universe with a warning for all evil-doers. When Xi picks up two distress signals, the team splits up to investigate. Jason And Yale take to the planet KO-35 while Zach & Trini head to the Mindrow System. However, when both teams arrive to their missions, they both find that things are definitely not as they seem.

Jason & Yale come across some hostiles known as the Xurix with a mysterious onlooker watching. Readers will be very intrigued when said person is revealed to them later in the issue. As for Zach & Trini, they discover the remains of a crashed ship. During their investigation, they find a LOT more than rubble and debris. Even after leaving that planet, What does their findings mean for their future moving forward? And what about Jason’s encounter with that onlooker? There’s a lot of questions that readers will have to decipher for themselves with this issue.

Parrott has led this team into a few interesting directions with this issue. Obviously, coming off the heels of last issue’s proclamation, there was going to questions about how the team would be handling their new paths. Both pairs of heroes had captivating stories, with Trini and Zach’s edging out Jason and Yale’s (but not by much). The question of how they will handle their new responsibilities after leaving the Mindrow System will be a fun story to see with Zach & Trini. Jason & Yale’s story raised a lot of questions which readers will be excited to follow along with. This issue laid some great groundwork for what’s coming next.

Renna crushes it on the art (as awalys). I was a big fan of how the Mindrow System was depicted & the “cause” of their conflict (Never thought I would be reporting on a battle with “Mrs. Westinghouse” but here we are!). There’s a lot of action between both stories and Renna gives them great energy behind them. The whole sequence with Jason/Yale and the Xurix played out very well. There is a lot to be excited about this new direction for Omega Ranger fans.

Overall, Power Rangers #18 is a great jump-on point for new readers while establishing the new threats for longtime readers. The book has fantastic storytelling & art. It’s become the norm for both Power Rangers books under Boom Studios. There is no good reason not to check this book out at your LCS. It’s an excellent read!

For this edition, we’re checking out the conclusion of one of the best horror comics on the market: Night Of The Ghoul #6 by Scott Snyder, Francesco Francavilla & Andworld Design for Comixology Originals. If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again: The Comixology Originals line is one of the best investments you can make as a comic fan. Some of the best storytelling in the medium is happening here.

If you’re new to this story, Night Of The Ghoul centers around Forest Innman, a film studio worker who has come across the long lost remains of the film “Night Of The Ghoul”. With this piece of history in hand & son along for the ride, Innman tracks down the director of the movie, T. F. Merritt at a nursing home under a different name. Innman’s curiosity of this film might be more than he bargained for as Merritt starts to unveil the mystery about this film thought destroyed in a movie studio in 1946. Is Innman ready for the truth behind “The Greatest Horror Movie of All Time”?

Readers find that answer out quickly as this tale has so many incredible twists and turns that need to be read to fully appreciate. Now at the conclusion, let’s see how this epic concludes, shall we?

Innman & Merritt have made an escape from the nursing home & the insanity happening there. With time running out on his life, Merritt makes a last request to Innman to take him to the studio where it all begin in 1946. With this intention, Merritt prepares to finish the story for the movie’s biggest fan. As the movie starts playing it’s final act, it becomes clear that the movie being thought destroyed should have stayed dead. Readers will bear witness to the true ending of “Night Of The Ghoul” & what really happened on that fateful night with the studio fire.

Even with this mild spoiler warning, readers will not be ready for the final twists that happen in these pages. I’m keeping details a bit vague for this review because when I read this issue, I kept saying “HOLY ****!” and feel you, the reader, should have those moments to make with any tampering of judgement. The story has been such a fantastic read that heading into the finale, one would hope it doesn’t drop off. Rest assured, you won’t be disappointed with the events happening within this issue.

All the questions that have been asked since the beginning of the first issue will be answered without any confusion. The impact of these reveals will hit all the marks with fans. It literally is a roller-coaster of emotions when seeing how Innman’s quest of curiosity ends. This issue is perfectly crafted that once finished, you know you will have truly read something special with this story.

Snyder captures everything you love about horror with this book. Packing this story with so much drama, suspense and frightening moments was no easy task. However, it helps with strong lead figures to make that become a reality. The character of Forrest Innman brings to life the definition of there are some mysteries should be left close forever. Innman is one who connects to the audience easily for his harmless actions, but once the story ramps up, finds out he’s in way over his head. The complexity of TF Merritt is another strong point to this book. Merritt is a perfect counter to Innman. Even from the beginning, his story is not so cut and dry. The conflict of the truth behind the film does a nice slow burn until the ending but never loses the readers attention. Every element of the pacing of this story works.

Francavilla absolutely gives this book fantastic imagery throughout the story. Whether it’s the flashbacks to 1918, The infamous studio fire in ‘46 or present day, Francavilla sets up panels to make the big moments jump out at the reader. The use of the “vintage” color tones for the past sequences was a great touch throughout these issues. Look at the time Innman and Merritt spend in the studio during this final issue for a prime example. When Merritt asks “please play my movie” sends shivers up the spine because of how Merritt’s body language gives off the inevitable ending of his story. There is a lot of crazy sequences that unfold to get here but when the story needs that extra boost, the art raises it to a whole other level.

Overall, Night Of The Ghoul #6 is an absolute masterpiece! Snyder’s writing & Francavilla’s art bring a classic horror tale to modern times without losing any details along the way. Even if horror is not your go-to genre of comics, give this book a read. It’s a complete package of what a great comic is. Highly recommended for all comic readers. Sign up ASAP on Comixology & don’t miss this story.

For this edition, we’re checking out the latest installment from the new creative team on Mighty Morphin from Boom Studios. Mighty Morphin’ #18 by Mat Groom, Moises Hidalgo, Raul Angulo and Ed Dukeshire continue the new stat quo from the fallout from the Eltarian War saga. What’s the new course of action for the Mighty Morphin team? Let’s jump into this issue and see, shall we?

The team is in search of a new command center since their original one fell in the Eltarian War. last issue, Zordon made mention of finding a possible replacement plan and the team was off, leaving Earth in the hands of Rocky for protection. This issue jumps in where Zordon and co. are about ready to start the early stages of the command heist, but not everyone is happy to be here.

Meanwhile on Aegus V, the rangers are investigating a possible replacement center, but not everything is that easy (esp. when the base is under water). They are greeted by some inhabitants on that planet who don’t exactly rollout the welcome mat. What happens from here becomes an interesting turn of events for our team. There also are some intriguing exchanges between some of the team as well. The issue closes with a new player entering the field with a dramatic entrance. It’s a great set-up for next issue.

Groom continues to build on an interesting plot in the first story arc of his run. Trying to replace the command center is one that readers shouldn’t be expecting to be finished with one issue. Factor in that the universe as a whole is still reeling from the effects of the Eltarian War and our heroes have much to overcome. One big point of this issue is the interaction between most of the team. Zordon’s talks with the Green Ranger and Grace stood out plus Aisha and Billy’s chat feels more foreshadowing than originally planned. Very good avenues to take some stories down the road.

Hidalgo does a great job with art duties on this book. His depiction of the world of Aegus V was a nice treat for readers. Doing as much space travel as the team is doing, the new worlds the rangers are stopping by need to stand out. This issue showcases that easily. Take nothing away from the 2 page spread of how the makeshift center is looking. That was a great panel. Overall, solid job with this issue.

Overall, Mighty Morphin’ #18 continues to keep pushing the book’s new mission moving forward. This issue has excellent storytelling and art that will have readers fully invested in what this new phase is going to be. There is a fair share of set-up work, but never a bad thing to where I think the story is going. Keep an eye out for this book on the shelves of your Local Comic Shop.

For this edition, we’re checking out the final issue of the current run of Shadowman by Valiant Entertainment! Shadowman #8 by CULLEN BUNN, PEDRO ANDREO, JORDIE BELLAIRE and CLAYTON COWLES closes the chapter of Valiant Supernatural protector to a great close for this run. The Deadside War has taken a turn where Deadside & the blights have almost completely crossed over into the land of the living. With the assist of the Abettors, PUNK MAMBO & the entire Valiant Universe, Shadowman has been leading the resistance to little success. Even with the moments of self doubt, there can be no quit otherwise world as its known is over. With that gravity on his back, Shadowman leads his troops into the Deadside world itself to a confrontation with some notable figures. The power they possess is “borrowed” by the the Abettors leading to the final play they can make. The play: exorcise Deadside!

This leads to an epic final stand with the forces of Good and Evil. If you’re a fan of big action, you’ll LOVE this portion of the book. The moment that will have fans buzzing is the final resolution to this conflict. It’s somewhat of a surprise but knowing how Jack Boniface works, it’s not out of the realm of thought. What is it you ask? No spoilers here for that. All I will say is it wraps up the event to a satisfying conclusion leading into the next adventures of Jack Boniface in July.

Bunn caps off this run of Shadowman with a fitting conclusion. During both story arcs, Boniface is challenged to find a solution to the ever growing problem of the Blights. He is written as a conflicted hero and this plays well for both arcs (#1-4 and then 5-8). Deadside has proven to be a very intriguing character in her own right. The stakes of this event felt very heavy, as it should for such an event. The events to close the war feels like a surprising play, but that always leads to the best stories. With Bunn writing, there is no doubt of that not happening.

Putting this out into the universe: MORE PEDRO ANDREO PLEASE! With this story, Andreo really brought the action and fast paced war moments to panels with excellent art. Valiant couldn’t have picked a better person for this event. If you need proof of this, the 2 page spread (pages 10-11 I believe) will put all other doubts to rest. How Andreo showcased the use of the supernatural really connected and gave this event that shot of energy to feel epic. As a reader, The Deadside War truly felt like an event because of this!

Overall, The Deadside War closes on a fitting note. Bunn and Andreo put the final touches on this chapter of Jack Boniface with an incredible mix of strong writing & fantastic art. If Shadowman hasn’t been in your pull list for this run, fix that quick. Place your orders at the LCS now for Book Of Shadows cause the fallout from these pages are going to keep the Year of Valiant moving strong into the summer and beyond.

I can’t stress this enough: If you haven’t signed up for Comixology Unlimited yet, you are really missing out on some great titles. One of the newest additions to that roster is Love And War #1 by Andrew Wheeler and Killian Ng This book is debuting on Comixology but is slaed to be in print form via Dark Horse Comics in September. Let’s check this first issue out, shall we?

The story centers around Domo Novak, a member of the Tug Of War team at Aster Academy. In the previous school year, the team came in second place at the championships. During this moment, Domo and Gabriel, the team’s captain kissed. With a new school year starting Domo is looking for Gabriel to continue what started that night. Unfortunately, it appears Gabriel has left without a trace.

Not only does this leave a hole in Domo’s heart bu this now leaves a power struggle for who’s going to replace Gabriel as team captain. At the start, Domo is made temporary co-captain with star member Jocosta, who is none too happy sharing the duties. This brings a strain on her relationship with Nessa, who is close with Domo. Factor in a new arrival to the academy in the for of Emil and a possible lead on Gabriel and Domo’s world is turned completely upside down. What a way to start the year,

Romantic Comedy books are really not on my radar but I did find this book very fun with all it’s story-lines happening. Wheeler creates a very interesting universe with characters that have some good layers to take the story’s direction in. Domo got a lot of time in this first issue (as he should being the lead), but I interested in seeing where the other characters of this story go once things ramp up here.

Ng keeps the fun vibe with the art duties. The style used here gives the book that youthful feel that the story needs. The teenage problems are showcased very well. Great introduction for Emil for the full panel page to convey Domo’s reaction. Never has the world of competitive Tug-Of-War stood out more. The book as a whole is a very enjoyable read.

Overall, Love and War #1 serves as a fun break from the traditional comics on the shelf. Like previously stated, i’m not a huge Rom Com fan but this issue was entertaining. Solid storybuilding and art from start to finish. If you’re a fan of this genre, make sure to check it out and I’m sure you’ll be happy that you did!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! For this edition, we’re checking out the latest installment of a Ringo-Award winning comic from the creative mind of David Pepose. If you’re not familiar with Pepose’s work, he is the mastermind behind such books as Scout’s Honor, Spencer & Locke and the upcoming, soon to be your new favorite Marvel comic, Savage Avengers to name a few. However, the book that jumps out on his resume to me is the Ringo Award winning “The O.Z.” Issue #2 by Pepose, Ruben Rojas. Whitney Cogar & DC Hopkins continues this epic fantasy story. Let’s check out what this issue is all about, shall we?

The O.Z. centers around Dorothy Gale, a veteran of the Iraq War who is whisked away to a version of OZ that has never been seen before. OZ, as in “Wizard of OZ” OZ & this Dorothy is the granddaughter of the original Dorothy from that classic story. From where issue #1 took us, the landscape has changed dramatically. Former allies are now foes and all bets are off as to who will survive this new world. Issue #1 is a fantastic read & highly recommended.

Issue #2 starts off with Dorothy now leading the charge of resistance against the evil one currently ruling OZ: The Scarecrow! After Dorothy freezes up during an assassination attempt, the resistance has to retreat from their attack and leads the evil forces right to their front door! Just as it looks like our heroes are doomed for, they cross paths with another classic character from the original story, thought VASTLY different than what readers would remember. From this encounter, Dorothy and company make a move towards acquiring a weapon powerful enough to end this reign of terror once and for all. Unfortunately “He who has a brain” has been patiently making moves waiting for them. If this is going to be the final battle for the Occupied Zone, both sides are ready to this to end. Great final page cliffhanger!

WOW! Pepose has created one of the most imaginative re-tellings of a classic you will ever read! Issue #1 laid the groundwork for this new vision, but this issue took things up a few notches. The character of Dorothy Gale is a complex one. While being the soldier that the good fight needs, she struggles with her past actions in our world. It makes for a very compelling lead character for this book. I also enjoyed the interaction between the “Samaritan” & Gale after the failed assassination attempt. He has been a great character to balance her out due to his own past. Juggling around so many of the original story’s key players hasn’t been an issue with this series. Pacing has been solid and all main characters feel they have time to grow and make impacts for the reader to follow.

Rojas has done a stellar job at bringing this world to life. It’s distinctly different from the OZ readers might know. Rojas’ versions of all the main players feel distinct & the action sequences! Every time there i a battle, the creative team shines! From the battle for the resistance headquarters to the quest for the big “weapon”, every panel pops off the page and there is no question readers are glued to their books seeing it. This book is some of the best storytelling in comics you’re ever gonna read.

Overall, The O.Z. continues it’s wildly imaginative story with strong writing and artwork. The World of OZ has never been more interesting! Readers are in for a fantastic treat with the twists and turns happening within these pages. Pepose and Rojas are making an instant classic!.
