For this review, the Children of the Atom have blazed back from Krakoa in a monster way. Scott Summers leads a new team in Alaska. The roster is a bit eclectic but that always makes for the best line-ups. Even with some new faces, the threats remain the same. Their current challenge is a familiar one that Scott and company know all too well.

X-MEN #3 (2024) by Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, J. P. Mayer, Livesay, Marte Gracia and Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics)

MacKay brings out the best and worst of Scott Summers for this chapter. Cyclops has always been a polarizing figure. Over the years, he has transitioned from loyal soldier of Xavier to a young Magneto. The writing sets his character come out to face Agent Lundqvist. Their confrontation covers much ground. It backs quite the punch with some notable jabs before landing its’ knockout blow.

The rest of the team get their fleeting moments of time. Magneto and Temper’s conversation unveils a building conflict of opinions. While some mutants may have loved Krakoa, it’s easy to forget there are some that hated that time. Showcasing this notion builds up Temper when on page. However, this issue belongs to Mr. Summers. The bold declaration made comes with a heavy cost. MacKay exposes a rare glimpse of Summers in the closing panel. This could lead into some new avenues along with the more traditional heroics displayed thus far.

Stegman and the art team set a solid pace for Summers and Lundqvist’s meeting. The casual back and forth with the half panel builds up the tense situation. Readers watch as the two play their game of one-upmanship. Summers’ anger of events jump off the pages with big panels. Its’ only a few moments but nails its’ landing.

The rest of the team have some traditional superhero action here as well. A full page panel showing the team linked up and rolling swings their story into new territory. It’s capped out with Temper getting a full page splash bringing the house down. This is all before turning panels back over to Cyclops. With the parting shot, the weight of the world is felt crashing on Scott’s shoulders. It’s a fitting end and new start of the elder X-Man’s new stat quo.

FINAL POINT: 8.3

The world of Scott Summers comes front and center in this latest X chapter. MacKay drives the anger and purpose in Scott’s voice with solid writing. Stegman and the art team mix in loud action with the dramatic reactions of simple diner talk. Things are moving fast here so don’t miss out!

LIFE #1 (DSTLRY MEDIA)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, DSTLRY is releasing a brand new series that has a unique concept behind it. The upstart publisher is known for its’ creative stories. However, this series combines the writing talents of two of comics’ best for the first time on page. The result is a sci-fi odyssey told through two different perspectives.

LIFE #1 by Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets), Stephanie Phillips (GRIM), Danijel Zezelj (Nostalgia), Lee Loughridge and Jared K. Fletcher welcomes readers into a future where two lives are on a collision course their prison sentances can’t escape.

Let’s take a closer look at this much anticipated debut chapter.

LIFE #1 by Brian Azzarello, Stephanie Phillips, Danijel Zezelj, Lee Loughridge and Jared K. Fletcher (DSTLRY) Cover: JOCK

Knowing the writing team behind this, this story was going to be anything but ordinary. The futuristic story is told through Bobby Prost (“PRO”) & the “Cassanova Killer” Cory James (“CON”). Prost is a “retired” thief talked into one last job. James is a serial killer whose been forced to live out his life sentences due to a secret experiment. Both have very different stories behind them.

Prost is written as a man trying to escape his past. His Angel/Devil on his shoulder is the persistent Jax. Their dialogue brings Prost’s doubts to the forefront. Events quickly speed into another direction entirely. Azzarello and Phillips waste little time in setting up the next heist. Pacing allows an excellent build, this carries into its’ closing act. The final page throws everything in flux leading into the flip. It’s high level storytelling that hits its mark with this portion.

The story of James is more disturbing due to his criminal nature. The dialogue involving his crimes is filled with anger and rage. Readers will have a clear view of the evil monster behind his charming smile. The path he walks from this point is dark and troubling. Its’ mirrored by the actions of the experiments. The outcome plays into a twisting scenario. Now moved onto a prison planet, James is broken and more unhinged. The writing leaves him in a very peculiar place for the closing pages. There’s no way to walk away from this story after that conclusion.

Zezelj and Loughridge add a certain mystique to the futuristic setting of this tale. Prost’s beginnings are gritty and carry the hardships he’s dealt with. This changes quickly once the two page splash image from space hits. Readers see how things have changed instantly. The contact with the the heist team gives off “Oceans 11” vibes in the images. No stand out more than the final page. It’s a bold picture that truly does a “mic drop” moment to end events with.

As for James’ story, the art locks in on his evil persona. The opening page from a murder sends chills through readers. Its emotions are added to the volatile state of the courtroom where James is being tried. James’ constant smirk fails to hide the evil lurking inside him. This builds right to the experiment phase of the story. The art becomes vastly different unveiling James’ fate. It becomes more explosive with James’ haunting eyes staring at readers as he calls his next moves.

FINAL POINT: 10

“Life” takes bold chances and constructs a gripping tale of challenging directions. Azzarello and Phillips’s writing is flawless as it tells two very different perspectives. Zezelj and Loughridge delve into imaginative landscapes and shocking characters. Rest assured, readers can’t afford to miss checking this series out.

LUCHAVERSE: CATALYST #2 by Marco Lopez, Ivan Plaza, Javier Caba, Alessandro Micelli, Bryan Arfel Magnaye, and Micah Myers (Masked Republic/Massive Publishing)

The Lucha Bros. story kicks off events in this chapter. It gives readers a fair mix of action and supernatural elements. Penta and Fenix’s relationship is defined b their distinct personalities. Penta is more aggressive and cunning. Fenix leans into the more heroic aspect. Readers are given a solid backstory before the main event starts.

In this portion, Lopez and Plaza set up great action while dabbling in the mystic realm. This builds up the closing act where readers get more than they bargained for. Pacing goes move briskly through this section. Ultimately it leads to a few key moments before the conclusion. Once at the final stop, the writing indicates the layers haven’t been pulled back enough to decipher where these two are heading next.

Solar and Super Astro’s story stretches into many different areas. The writing dabbles into various time areas to off a more global feel to their tale. Adding in the time jumps helped to make this stand out more. Events are spaced out for a good duration to lock in with readers. The closing act throws a solid curve into the mix. With the last page surprise, this story is anything but over and done with.

The art mixes in a fair amount of wrestling into each story. Caba brings forth the conflicting personalities of Fenix and Penta to show off their differing opinions. There’s a great full page splash of the brothers standing off with Heaven and Hell that plays out more as things progress. This is also complemented once the brothers come in contact with its’ mystic ending.

Micelli mixes in reactions with the building chaos for some entertaining visuals. Seeing Solar and Astro in heroic fashion suits well for the latter conflict. The Roswell scenes are overflowing with disdain for their capture. Art moves into their new adventures with ease. Stepping into the closing moments, the main adversary is given a big full intro page spread, This can also be said for the final page. Both art teams handled the challenge presented for an easy win here.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

The next wave of luchadores pick right up with a sense of the dramatic blended with action. Penta and Fenix’s quest brings out the tense nature with the writing. Solar and Astro carried a more traditional superhero feel built by the art. Factor both together and fans won’t want to kick out at 3 for this fast rising universe and line.

Phillips continues to test the patience and will of Grey with the latest chapter. adding in Corsair into the mix works on many levels. There is a well placed humor moment in between the drama that hits the mark. The Scott/Jean "convos" are quickly becoming a highlight of each issue. Their latest plays off the awkward moment before speeding back into action. Once the mission picks back up, the pacing kicks everything into overdrive.

Corsair's involvement brings forth an unlikely threat behind the conflict. Phillips swings for the fences with this reveal. It sets up some great action moments. Grey is also shown to be out of her element in certain aspects. Her mis-step leads into the closing moments which are sure to have readers talking. Cosmic Marvel is back in a big way with this series!

The art sets up big action behind the family drama. The opening page clues readers in on Jean's rampant pace of fighting. Corsair is given a full page image to welcome him into the story. Their interactions range from funny to uneasy. The art reflects this with the detailed facial expressions.

The latter half of the book is filled with blockbuster action. Jean is presented as defiant in danger's face. The reactions of the aliens she's fighting to save are noteworthy as well. Readers see the fear Jean's action cause even when trying to help. With a strong closing image, the latest chapter sets the stage for an even bigger battle to come.

FINAL POINT: 9

Jean Grey's reign in space continues with another strong chapter. Phillips' writing crafts a balance of big action and tense emotions. The art captures the best of space while bringing the heat with the intense combat in deep space. There's no sophomore slump here. You definitely don't want to miss out on this escapade.

BLACK CLOAK #7 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, the wait is over! It has been one year since readers have seen the city of Kiros. The mystery behind the death of Freyal III of Sidra has been solved. The price has been steep. Phaedra Essex has become the most polarizing citizen of the last city. This is to be expected when you are the responsible party for the “Essex Fire” which left the city in ashes. Where do things stand now with her and her Black Cloak partner Pax?

With a time jump, things can go awry very quickly. There is no fear of that happening with the return chapter. Thompson recaptures the intrigue and mystique of Kiros right from the start. Phaedra’s new stat quo provides its’ fair share of strain with Pax. The former partners show the bond of comradery even with the events of the fire weighing heavily on both.

Phaedra’s caring nature pushes through in the end. It’s one of her strongest character traits. The writing teases its’ unveiling but ultimately lets it become the catalyst for the case at hand. Aldean offers some comedic relief in the “third wheel” role. This gives some welcomed breaks in the building case at hand. Events conclude with a great cliffhanger that is sure to please. Get ready for another incredible arc.

McClaren excels at building a vivid and imaginative new landscape of Kiros. The ruins carry a certain feel as Phaedra walks readers through her new home. Pax’s reunion with Essex covers a wide range of emotions. Readers can sense the lingering feeling from the fire. They can also pick up the longing to get back to where the partners used to be at.

Aldean is a visually catching addition to the team. Carey’s lettering in the conversation provides a pause in the drama while showing a new side of Essex. This returns to focus the trio on what lies ahead. The full page closing image delivers on leaving readers wanting more of the story. It also leaves no doubt that even with five years removed, the spectacle of Kiros burns bright with the art.

Welcome Back Kiros! After a year away, Black Cloak storms back to shelves with an impressive return. Thompson weaves a new mystery around the emotional strain of The Essex Fire fallout with excellent writing. McClaren and Carey give readers a look at the mysterious new world with stunning imagery. For this second chapter, the attention is thrown on the scheming of Dr. Zerc. Way and Simon have slowly started peeling back his true intentions. This chapter shows a cold and ruthlessness side to his nature. It is a contrast of what he has demonstrated to his fellow team at the Gardens. Zerc’s manipulations of a staff member and its’ outcome sends a loud message in the shadows of what lies ahead.

Way and Simon spread out Loo’s discovery mission throughout this chapter. She comes across with noble intentions but walks a very fine line of being caught. The pacing allows her moments to build for a solid payoff. It gets assisted by some well-timed humor from patients. The writing provides a solid foundation for both main characters to grow and set forth their journeys for a showdown forthcoming.

Weston and Stewart dive heavy into the emotional reactions of the Gardens staff with the art. Loo’s responses to her ever-evolving saga are filled with wonderment and apprehension. Readers see a prime example of this when she’s teaching a class and reacts to a flashback/Dream sequence.

Zerc’s planning works wonders as he blackmails the Gardens driver for his bidding. The devilish smirk he wears sets the unsettling tone. This mood flows into the closing conflict and disturbing resolution. Zerc’s distain body language in the closing half page panel sells the depths he’s willing to go. Readers watch as the chapter concludes on a very definitive point with more deceit en route to the care center.

FINAL POINT: 9.6

The quirkiness of Paradise Gardens steps back to allow a more grounded and concentrated tale with its’ two main characters. Fantastic writing and detailed art spotlight the measures Zerc and Loo are willing to go for what they’re searching for. There is nothing predictable about this story and that’s a huge win for readers.

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #30 (DC COMICS)

One of the series best elements is taking a dive into the history of the iconic pair. Adding Wonder Woman into the mix hits on many levels. Waid constructs an excellent mystery that unites all three parties. There is a genuine sense of hope and wonder filling the pages. The classic superhero elements are captured to give the audience a throwback that juggles three unique personalities.

Having Paradise Island as the backdrop, outsiders being welcomed is a small beginning conflict. Robin provides great comic relief as the heroes start their mission. Waid paces events to continuous build towards big moments. This leads to a strong closing act where the heroes show off what makes them an elite trio. Its’ fallout plays in a predictable yet satisfying close. Few can pull this off quite like Waid with his writing.

Melnikov steps in for Dan Mora and brings a vibrant style to the past era. A near full page panel brings the mystery and heroes together to kickstart events. The coloring of Bonvillain adds to the sense of awe that Robin displays in his panels.

The reactions of Batman and Wonder Woman investigating what happened is another bright moment. Diana’s reactions lock in with readers as elements come into focus. Once a few key reveals occur, the art kicks into a new gear. It caps off with Wonder Woman leading a charge to address things with her partners. The imagery seizes readers’ attention while ending the conflict. Readers should have much to rave about with this one.

FINAL POINT: 9

The beginnings of DC’s true Trinity shine bright in an incredible vintage tale. Waid’s writing features the budding teamwork and trust through fire. Melnikov, Bonvillain and Sharpe orchestrate a timeless story which re-enforces the impact when all three heroes working together. It’s Superhero storytelling at it’s (worlds) finest for a reason.

With the walls closing in, Williamson continues to push Superman into uncharted territory. The toll of Waller’s actions are staring to seep in. With an emotional outburst, readers can identify the pain Kent is going through. It’s a sight that isn’t shown often. With this moment in story, the emotional release hits.

It drives Superman and Zatanna to a quicker pace for the remainder of the chapter. Willaimson sprinkles in times of challenge before the main event. The sense of anger and (to a certain degree) fear start taking over the pages. This theme is very prevalent during the close. It ultimately leaves readers with a jaw dropping ending that fits the broken persona of DC’s biggest hero.

Campbell wastes no time on presenting spectacular images. The opening flashback element bottles up a more light hearted time before ushering into the murky present. Zatanna and Supers are given a full splash page to start their escapades. It starts a bold display of frustration in Clark that won’t escape readers’ thoughts.

The closing act starts off with a well-detailed two page splash. Right before the action begins, the art team mix in some more calmer panels. This quickly fades away as Superman’s impatient behavior takes center stage. Imagery raises the stakes to an all time high. The art team presents a full page closing figure that readers will have thoughts on. It plays into leaving the audience wanting more. This issue shows no signs of misfiring in that aspect.

FINAL POINT: 8.9

The lengths and desperation start seeping in on DC’s flagship character with this chapter. Williamson pens a defeated yet driven Superman with the writing. Campbell continues providing fantastic images that easily hook readers in. Considering where the closing page lands, all bets are off as events play out.

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #1 (MARVEL COMICS - 2024)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, a classic Marvel character howls his way back to the comic shops!

After the events of Marvel's "Bloodiest Event", the 52 year old supernatural staple is set to take things up a few notches. Anyone thinking this will be just "another werewolf" story is sadly mistaken. The adventures of Russell (and Elsa Bloodstone) will be featured under the Marvel Red Band format. Considering how violent "Blood Hunt" was, it is anyone's guess where things are heading now.

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #1 by Jason Loo (The All-Nighter, the Sentry), Sergio Fernández Dávila (Venom, Thor), Jay Leisten, JP Mayer, Craig Yeung, Alex Sinclair and Joe Sabino have fans howling at the bloody adventures!

Let’s check out what the first chapter has to deliver!

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #1 by Jason Loo (The All-Nighter, the Sentry), Sergio Fernández Dávila (Venom, Thor), Jay Leisten, JP Mayer, Craig Yeung, Alex Sinclair and Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

With Loo at the helm, I already had high expectations for this series. Taking a character like Russell (with his history) and putting more mystery behind him was a great start. It gave enough insight for new readers to jump in quickly.

However, the hook that won me over was the introduction of the rogues: Death Watch (the 90's Ghost rider fans know what he's capable of) AND the Hood?! Seeing those two weave behind the scenes can only lead to trouble for any lead. It provides a solid back drop for the internal conflict post Blood Hunt.

Russell's struggles with the beast within is well known. Adding in a new dynamic to it plays for a fresh start. Long time fans won't be disappointed with the changes.

There's a fair share of wolf business that's par for the course. Seeing both plots interweave gives readers much to look forward too. The eventual payoff should be quite the memorable moment. Great start to the series.

Dávila and the team bring out the best of the beast throughout the chapter. There's an excellent two page splash showing off Russell's unique set of skills. This is complimented with another big splash connecting the story to "Blood Hunt". Russell's reaction is gifted a full page image that sets the course for the rest of the story.

When referenced about the "Red Band", the art clearly reflects the savage nature of Russell's world. Two victims of an attack are presented to readers without apologies. Speaking of no apologies, both major rogues make a dramatic entrance into the story with blown up images. Their bloody actions speak volumes to the readers. It caps off with a solid final image that sets the tone for an even greater saga to be told.

FINAL POINTS: 8.8

In dealing with such a well-known character with history, it can be a challenge to present something new. Loo sets up a fantastic starting point that covers much ground before concluding. The art team led by Davila flood the pages with brutal scenarios and an ever-growing sense of intrigue. With a great jumping on point, this one will be a tale you won't want to miss where it leads next.

FALLING IN LOVE ON THE PATH TO HELL #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, the most unlikely love story in comics continues! The journey of Asami and MacRaith has taken many twists and turns. Being in purgatory plays a big factor with this. It also doesn’t help when a helping hand shows their true colors. With the dirty dealing of Mohan causing more havoc, how much does the couple have left?

Falling in Love on the Path to Hell #3 by Gerry Duggan, Garry Brown, Chris O’Halloran, Joe Sabino presses forward with another creative outing!

Let’s see how thing play out for the cursed couple now.

With Mohan’s true intentions coming to light, readers had to expect things to go from bad to worse. MacRaith’s struggles to “adapt” to this new world increase with each page. The reluctance to buy into Mohan’s order peels back his layers of character. Even with a bonding moment with Asami, the sense of uneasiness lingers.

Once a choice is made, Duggan spotlight’s Mohan’s twisted ways of dealing with “failure to comply”. It is not one for the squeamish. The sequence reflects the savage personalities inhabiting Purgatory. With a community of killers, there is nothing nice about their business. As the unlikely couple draws closer, the writing leads their union to be a trial through fire. Readers will be locked in with their dire fight to survive. It is very creative writing that continues to keep taking intense chances that has to be applauded.

Brown and O’Halloran paint a disturbing picture with the art in this chapter. Mohan’s funeral arraignments for a fallen warrior make a loud statement early in the issue. With a half page image, Mohan stands over his army dictating. Asami if gifted a few pages of silent images showcasing her skills. It is a calm moment before the disturbing action forthcoming.

Mohan’s enforcers run-in with MacRaith holds nothing back. The “motivation” scenes reflect the unhinged behavior running rampant. They are ended quickly with a two page splash matching it’s savagery. The art team doesn’t pull anything back with the imagery here. It drives home the point of the bleakness of purgatory and those living in it. With the closing page, the issue concludes on a quiet and somber panel. It allows the reader to process what went down and ponder what troubles lie ahead.

With MacRaith in the crosshairs of danger, comics’ most unlikely love story delivers another solid chapter. Duggan’s writing constructs the unsettling lengths Mohan will go for control. Brown and O’Halloran mix in the big horrors and small victories with the artwork. Without question, there is nothing else like this series and its’ creativity on the shelves right now.

As the battle has been raging on, the scars left have been taking their tolls. Johnson pens a very heavy driven tale of pain and loss. The emotions pour out of Arcee and Euta. It reflects the hellish landscape this conflict has created. The dialogue with Optimus comes with venom and frustration. Readers can feel the rage brewing at the hands of Soundwave and company.

Pacing allows for a quick Segway with Beachcomber. His point of view of events is in strong contrast to most others involved. Johnson keeps his true placement in this tale in a unique position. It is enough of a break to let the audience brace for the closing act. Leave it to Johnson to take them on a rollercoaster of reactions before departing. The closing page will leave no doubt of how hope continue to slip from attainability.

Corona and Spicer delve into the wear of combat often in this chapter. The rage of Arcee comes to the forefront with sequenced panels. Its’ added to with a half page panel of Euta venting on Optimus. Both are easy connections to the readers with the stress of battle.

Once the final act kicks into gear, the art team builds up the tension with the imagery. Seeing a recsue attempt go sideways provides many thrills. It leads to a creative order of panels bringing in a major player into the fight. With Wooten’s lettering, the moment hits new heights. The time is quickly short lived as a spectacular two page splash steals the thunder of the battle. How things are left with the final panel presents a somber feeling of where things appear to head next. It’s a perfect way to tie off events until next time.

As time runs out for Optimus Prime, readers are left with a chapter of highs and lows. Johnson brings the deep wounds of conflict into the spotlight with the writing. Corona, Spicer and Wooten flood the pages with impressive visuals as all appears to be lost for the Autobots and Earth. This series continues to be the talk at the LCS for good reason.

Simone brings out the strengths and doubts of a young Superman. With the challenge of saving Metropolis, the writing reflects the determination to succeed. It also features the Man Of Steel questioning himself. The payoff is completely heroic. This sets a strong tempo for the next phase of the story.

While on the alien ship, Lois Lane emerges as the true strength behind the Man of Steel. Once they reunite, the dialogue fuels Superman into the next challenge. The closing sequence is pure superhero themes. Big stakes, bigger action, biggest heart and will. Simone captures the classic essence and presents it with a timeless feel. It builds towards an excellent finish with a great cliffhanger. There’s much to enjoy about the writing in this story.

Barrows, Miki and Lokus continue to bring the big-screen action with Superman’s conflicts. The floating ship panels ramp up the tense danger. It caps off with a big full page splash (literally) concluding the challenge. From here, the alien ship is presented with a two page splash that exemplifies the various interested parties.

However, the issue’s big challenge steals the show. after Lois’ words, Superman kicks into high gear. The images flow with his race against the clock. The full page countdown scenario plays well into the intense pace of the action. It moves into a great closing panel. Simple in set-up, the panel sets the stage for a big conclusion to an already impressive story.

The back-up story by Rowell and Tormey adds more to the ethical challenges of the Kents. Rowell’s writing shows all sides of the argument. This is a very different side of Lois and Clark that hasn’t been seen in a while. Tormey and the team bring forth the emotional wear on both key players with exceptional ease. The conclusion throws a distinct ending panel before picking up next chapter.

FINAL POINT: 9

The throwback tale of the Man Of Steel continues its’ winning ways with another great issue. Simone’s writing delivers on the hero’s will versus improbable odds. Throughout the chaos, a very classic tale is being woven. Zdarsky plays into the unique relationship of Bruce and Selina for its’ foundation. Knowing the past year (post Knight Terrors), to say “its’ complicated” is an understatement. The intro glosses over that area to get to the business at hand. Once the situation is explained, it’s a quick start to the mission.

Seeing the seasoned pros go to work undercover, readers watch as the ruse comes to an abrupt head. The addition of The Suicide Squad gives a fresh challenge for the Bat and The Cat. Bizarro steals scenes with Batman as things progress. However, the star of the book is the union of the Cat and the Bat. Zdarsky charges into the final act with a personal moment between the two. It leads into a more surprising location for their heist. How this will play out is any guess but a solid beginning never the less.

Hawthorne, Di Benedetto, and Fajardo Jr. lock in on the emotional pull between Bruce and Selina often with the art. The opening sequence feels very familiar as the long time lovers reunite over the heist at hand. Bizzaro watching the Squad get off the plane via full page panel adds raises tension of the story.

Once the Squad comes face to face with the pair, the action ramps up. Panels move at a high pace. Bizarro makes another big splash with a huge one page shot. This leads into the closing moments that bring events full circle. Seeing Batman show emotion was a familiar break in the action.

Considering recent events, it is a return to basics. Heading into the final page, readers watch as the pair’s luck runs out. The art team gives a strong final image before concluding for next time.

FINAL POINT: 7

The Bat and The Cat are back with a traditional mission at hand. Zdarsky’s writing sets the stage for an enjoyable saga. Hawthorne and company balance the action with some conventional interacts that play right into the drama. Where we go from here in anyone’s guess.

Bunn sets the stage for a classic heroic tale. The writing carries much of a straight forward pace with events unfolding. Pacing is very quick but never feels forced. The action sequences mirror the electric times of old. From here, the story switches back to an undercover attack. Bunn juggle the large cast with great ease. There wasn’t a wasted panel shot when taken.

Galactor and Berg Katse get a poignant spotlight in the issue. It provides more insight onto the team’s most despised villain. The story’s resolution is textbook. That is not a bad thing when dealing with a long-standing property as Gatchaman. It offers a fun twist on where to take their fight next. This was a great adventure of any long-time fans of the series.

Batista and Lopez construct an excellent two page splash to kick off the action style. This ultimately leads into another full page image that will have readers amped. Seeing the team unveil this option of combat is a sure win.

The conversations with Katse pour with his blatant charisma. He is their top villain for good reason. the art showcases him in said manner. It also allows the team to counter his advances with great action panels. The closing image is a nice swerve that can only lead to more danger and thrills next issue.

The return of Gatchaman gifts fans with another thrilling challenge. Bunn’s writing taps into the vintage superhero playbooks and scores. Batista, Lopez and Beaudoin give fans great action fitting of the franchise. This is a perfect time to jump on board and see what all the hype is about.

For this entry, the takeover of the DCU has begun! A new trinity has emerged. Their plan of eliminating Earth’s heroes rolled out to great success. In one orchestrated attack, Amanda Waller and the Trinity Of Evil decimated the hero community. Seeing Superman depowered and dying struck a chord throughout the fandom.

With their next moves, time is running out for the remaining heroes. Can they rebound and get on the offensive?

The most devasting attack Waller has unloaded isn’t the depowering. It’s the personal wound driven into Superman. Waid pens the intense barrage with a heartless theme behind it. The move does more damage than any Kryptonite can ever cause. This leads to an erratic Man Of Steel trying to steer a lost cause.

One character does steal a lot of thunder with a speech fans will be raving about. Nightwing has emerged as the new face of DC. Waid gives him a legendary moment that won’t be soon forgotten. From here, the writing presents a very fast paced tale. With action unfolding everywhere, the major players get their key moments. This plays into a slower third act to let the readers recoup. The chapter departs on a big discovery. It only grows the feeling of how high the stakes are. “Event” is the only way to describe this!

Mora and Sánchez bring to life the desperate times of the heroes. The loss of control is shown loudly on the heroes faces. Once Nightwing takes control of the room, the art gives him a proper platform to call his shots. The two page spread elevates his status even more as he addresses the remaining heroes.

It is tough to follow that up, but Mora constructs amazing fight sequences as the conflict hits home. During the melee, the heartfelt wear of actions pour out of Superman. This speaks directly to the audience as he comprehends what Waller has done. Another character has a huge moment built by close up panels. The extreme costs of this conflict shine bright with the art. Readers will no doubt be on the edge of their seats for this one.

The Trinity Of Evil continue to tighten their hold on the DCU with another amazing chapter. Waid’s writing drives home the personal attack on Superman with a direct bullseye. Mora and Sánchez construct the explosive action in between the high drama. This series is firing on all cylinders and simply defines “must read”.

UNCANNY X-MEN #1 (MARVEL COMICS 2024)

With the Krakoan Era over, fans have been waiting to see what happens now with the Children of The Atom. Hiding on a pop culture high with such hits as "Deadpool and Wolverine" to "X-Men '97", Marvel's favorite mutants are making a push to become the premier franchise in all of comics.

Taking a page out of their 90's playbook, the X-Men have been rolling out a multiple of new titles. Having some of the industry's top creators signifies the commitment Marvel is making to the comic line. With each new title, there is an air of wonder and curiosity surrounding their release. However, one book has be standing out slightly more than others as far as hype goes.

UNCANNY X-MEN #1 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles looks to bring back the flagship title in a most marvelous manner.

Let’s take a closer look at how the X-Men’s latest outing goes.

IN SIMONE WE TRUST! Bringing in the architect behind some of the best team book stories in comics (Secret Six, Birds Of Prey), the X-Men start their new stat quo on a very strong note. With the new "Trinity of X" put in place, the story reminds readers why the X-Men are heroes at the very core.

Once the trio of Rogue, Gambit and Wolverine link up, there is a familiar theme of comradery that defines their dream. Even with unsurmountable odds against them, the writing showcases each member in their role on this team.

One character that stands out head and shoulders above everyone else in this issue is Rogue. Simone writes her in a very grounded manner. While other X-Men blindly grasp for Xavier's dream, Rogue is someone that is trying to define her own version.

This is driven home after an encounter that transcends the world of spandex suits and powers. The events wear heavy on Rogue's soul and heart. It is a powerful moment that is clearly the catalyst for her moving forward. Factor in the surprise ending and readers literally have a blueprint for how the X-Men should be written.

Marquez and Wilson bring out a great deal of emotions in Rogue AND Wolverine throughout the issue. With the subtle read of Logan's eyes, readers can sense his internal anguish. This disappears when their challenge awakens. The threat is gifted multiple full page images. It is fitting as to its' size and power scale. The action sequence play out to fan delight. There is big action, but what makes this story is the more "human" factor featured.

The visit to a children's hospital hits on many levels. The wide spectrum of feeling displayed instantly hit readers. Rogue's stages of acceptance shine as she begins her new era. It is balanced out with a closing image that raises many questions. The art team stepped up to the assignment and presented a version of Xavier's squad you can't help but to root for.

Without question, Marvel's mutant flagship title has returned with a renewed energy fans won't get enough of. Simone pens a superb script filled with heroics and heart. Marquez and Wilson construct exciting moments that reinforce the best elements incorporated in the DNA of the Children of the Atom. The future is bright for the latest incarnation of the Uncanny X-Men.

One of the strongest elements of this book is the consistent one-upmanship between the leads. With Preston, his motivations extend further than simple revenge. Emma counters with a well-staged front. Their encounter shows how much Emma has been forced to grow up. The biggest heist Preston orchestrated was stealing Emma’s childhood.

Bendis writes Emma as a confident and determined force. The play made against Preston is one that will catch some of the audience off guard. It works to add more drama to the layered attack at hand. Bendis constructs the build and tear-down extremely fine to maximize its’ impact. The conclusion ties up loose threads very smoothly. It plays strongly into the stages of an evolving character who’s just begun to scratch potential. Fantastic work tart to finish.

Maleev, Herring and Meng craft some impressive visuals for the finale. Two peices that will jump off the page show the range and styles of influence. One is a two page splash that has a computer painted appeal. The other two page splash is a heavy Mod/Steranko inspired feel. They stretch how far Emma’s plan dabble in attacking Preston. Readers will be locked in studying those images.

The breaks in coloring also help shift moods. Preston’s ordeal concludes with a bright glow. Readers will have to cypher what is unfolding. Katie Roots’ range of emotions are another standout point. The parting panels build up towards a strong closing page. In those panels, the art and lettering make a simple yet bold case on where things could possibly lead to next. It has been a huge part of this book’s success and never stalled in its’ run.

Breaking out of her parents’ legacy and forging her own, the story of Emma Lawford concludes on a spectacular note. Bendis, Maleev and the team combine elements of mystery and intrigue to deliver to readers what they’ve been saying all along: a masterpiece.

MacKay pulls out all the stops for an action packed finale. The Avengers last stand comes across as larger than life. It mirrors the stakes at hand. Seeing the rally cry is an easy win for readers. MacKay also mixes in some solid surprises to help the heroes.

That said, one character (literally) steals this issue. Doom’s portrayal pours of the self beliefs he always carries. The banter between him and Dr. Strange leaves readers knowing that a cost was paid that may be too high to overcome. MacKay throws in a predictable but impactful swerve in leading to the conclusion. Once the last page hits, the writing gives one more stunning mic drop moment before it bows out.

Larraz, Gracia and Sifuentes-Sujo provide iconic panels bringing the dire gravity of the event to life. The full page splash of the Avengers flying into action kicks events off in a monster way. The face off with Thor and Varnae/Blade feels of a true battle of titans.

Once Doom and Strange agree to their deal, the near full page unveiling screams excitement. This funnels into the action unfolding. Panels pick up a faster pace with the non-stop chaos taking place. It only slows down when Doom seizes a chance with a vibrant image. Even with a heroic shot of the survivors, happiness is short lived. The closing panel caps off what an anguished call Strange made and its’ upcoming repercussions will have.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

Marvel’s Bloodiest event concludes on a solid yet predictable landing spot. MacKay’s writing centers the big action with an intriguing sub plot. Larraz and the team bring amazing action sequences to life from start to finish. From here, a shift of power will be taking place that opens up many creative doors. Brace for it.

LOCAL MAN #12 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, we are heading back to Farmington! Jack Xaver’s transition into post heroics isn’t going well. Publicly disgraced. Legally banned from resuming his hero identity. This is the new norm for hero once known as Crossjack.

With more sinister elements at hand, Xaver plays with fire trying to help. The Faceless Horde must be stopped at all costs. The question is will Xaver be able to say the day or crumble to the pressure.

Local Man #12 by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio takes readers into the drama, danger and dueling with a former Vice President? Only in this Eisner nominated book does it work!

Let’s not delay any longer and jump into the chapter!

Xaver continues to be the flawed hero you can’t help but root for. His current situation pushes him to the edge. Fleecs and Seeley challenge Xaver with Igna’s true intentions. Readers watch as he attempts to process the new information. This isn’t met without challenge. The breakout character is Slick 2.0.

With each panel, she steals the moment from Jack. One of this books’ biggest strengths is the humor. The conversation between the three is comedic gold.

Once the story shifts gears, the drama builds at a slow pace. With the personal loss he took, Xaver is shown to be still reeling. The closing act elevates that even higher with key information revealed. Readers won’t be shocked at Xaver’s reaction to the news. Before that can be even processed, just wait for the final page. This series just keeps getting better and better.

The art showcase Xaver’s heavy toll of loss. The opening encounter with Inga and Slick varies with humor and surprise. Suffice to say, there is a LOT going on with the opening act. The reveal of the Horde’s leader is presented with a full page image. This exemplifies who’s behind the mask as a true threat.

Xaver and Inga’s team-up carries a tense feel. Once it transitions to their talk with a “prisoner”, the art accelerates. There’s a few great fighting sequences to set up a main event shot. The two page spread unveils much to the audience (especially with a cameo).

Readers will have much to discuss concerning the final pages. One is the release of Xaver’s pent up emotions. This is given a full page panel to drive home his anger. The ending page leaves readers with some questions before leaving on a high note. The art team delivers another strong issue.

“F*** Crossjack”! Jack Xaver is dealt with emotional blow after blow in this chapter. Seeley and Fleecs construct the tension with excellent writing. The art mirrors the mounting anger of the fallen hero splendidly. It’s another fantastic read that you simply don’t want to miss.

“The Wall” has never been shy about her feelings towards super heroes. Waller’s ruthlessness and determination is second to none. With Absolute Power within reach, Readers are about to see how it all began.

ABSOLUTE POWER: ORIGINS #1 by John Ridley, Alitha Martinez, Norm Rapmund, Andrew Dalhouse and Steve Wands begins to reveal the origin of one of the most feared and dangerous people in the DC Universe.

Ridley constructs a beginning based on loss and revenge. The parallels to Bruce Wayne’s beginnings make an instant connection to the readers. Both are driven by great loss. However, that is where the comparison ends. Waller deals with a system failing her when she needed it the most. Seeing how masked vigilantes receive preferred treatment lights a strong emotional reaction. This fuels her rage and begins her new path of vengeance.

Waller’s long game play works to perfection. It is not without challenges. The strain put on her family is tough and amplifies how committed she is to her goal. Seeing the big picture, Waller finds ways to sway favor in her direction.

The strongest point of this chapter is a conversation between Waller and Marvin Collins (who she’s volunteering on his congress campaign). In this moment, Waller delivers to readers why she is so dangerous. The pieces to a larger puzzle start falling in place. Once the closing page hits, there is no doubt this is only the beginning of something more sinister.

Martinez brings the painful beginnings of Waller’s path by capturing her rage in multiple panels. There is a key reaction to a Jim Gordon statement that is very clear in seeing her transform from sorrow into vengeful. Batman gets a full page image justifying what Waller is envisioning while Collins opponent is talking. Her unfazed reaction to the speech exemplifies how hardened she’s become to anything outside of her goal.

Waller’s conversation with her daughter shows the wear of her actions. Readers see the frustration in her expressions. This becomes short-lived as Waller begins her final play. The cold demeanor plays out perfectly as she accomplishes her first goal. It is complemented by the final page. Waller’s eyes speak more than any word bubble can. One goal down, many more to go.

FINAL GRADE: 9

Amanda Waller’s path to power begins with a strong tale of conviction over grief. Ridley pens a direct and excellent first chapter with the writing. Martinez, Rapmund, Dalhouse and Wands construct the revenge guided visuals showcasing the genesis of arguably the most dangerous person on the DCU Earth. This will be one story you won’t want to miss.
