Kirkman takes readers into Zerta’s fallout head on. The opening sequence highlights the trials of Premiere Zalilak. It sends a strong message of how high the stakes are. Proximus carries a different tone for his portion. Readers watch as the mood is more of an eased tension. Knowing the journey he has been on, the writing reflect the long road before it resumes again.

The heart of the story lies with Solila. With her major upgrade, she accepts a new perspective on her mission. Readers watch as the change leads into a daring confrontation. On the other side of her is Darak. His tale shows dwindling hope as more obstacles are thrown in his way. His conversations with his father walk a very fragile line. This leads into a dramatic close. An order is given that threatens everything built thus far. The moment is a lock to hit with readers with much uncertainty behind it.

De Felici and Delpeche ramp up the tension with the art. Premiere Zalilak’s latest challenge comes into light with a strong mid half panel. They switch gears with Proximus. The wear and tear of his path is very evident to the audience. It’s a true calm before the storm before the art heads to the lead characters.

Darak’s moments with his father pour witht he frustrations both have for the other. Even when there’s glimpses of coming to terms, the distrust never leaves. Solila’s transformation is gifted a fantastic two page spread. This is followed up by a near full shot of the new powers in use. The result is another near full shot kickstarting the close. Dulin steals the final page with his outburst. It results in two simple panels that speak volumes of where events are at now.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The fallout of Zerta’s revelations lay a tense foundation for the Energon Universe. Kirkman’s writing leads into the unlikely scenario at hand. De Felici and Delpeche bring out the inner struggles of the leads with their art. With the last page’s decree, there’s only more fuel thrown onto a very explosive stage.

This has left his daughter to her own devices (along with a robot guardian). One random encounter with a stranger proves to be a starting point of trouble.

An explosion rocks their home. Annalise wakes up to the sound of her father’s voice. When she looks, it’s not her dad that she sees. It’s her robot protector!

Rosenberg continues to orchestrate a very multi-layered saga. Opening with a flashback sequence connects a high stakes feel with readers. The new cast of characters elude to the deeper levels becoming exposed. A few get a fair amount of page time to start their journeys. As more comes to light about Dr. Alderman, the world of Annalise becomes thrown into a chaotic state. This leads into a thrilling part of the book.

Seeing Annalise and her robot navigate through intruders provides glimpses of a dark future. There are no punches pulled. Rosenberg sprinkles in some fun moments to keep things leveled out. It cushions the blow of Annalise’s dire discovery. This throws everything into a frantic state. Readers watch as there is more heart aching moments adding up on the young 13 year old. When the smoke clears, the closing pages lead into another unstable path. A new threat stands before readers to welcome them to the next phase of this ever-engaging tale.

Landini and Wordie open up with a jarring full page image. The aftermath of the initial attack makes an immediate impact on readers. This is followed up with a special grid panel set-up for new characters. It brings out the best of their conversation, pushing Dante’s fallout higher. Their close ups tease the many personalities now involved. It is brief but provides a steady gap to regroup on Annalise and company.

The brutality of the situation never is held back. Readers watch as the robot handles would be assailants with no remorse. Annalise’s reactions vary in the midst of searching for her father. A close up of her crying eyes speaks louder than any dialogue when the time hits. The escape from the island is capped off with a half page image. This jumpstarts events into the closing pages. The ending shot ushers in a new direction and antagonist for Annalise to deal with. Artwork continues to be a strong base for this story to grow from.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5

The end of Dr. Dante Alderman lands a devastating blow onto his daughter’s survival in this latest chapter. Rosenberg keeps working the winning combination of drama and danger via the writing. Landini and company give this story show-stealing visuals at every turn. This series carves its’ own niche at the comic shops that simply cannot be ignored.

The world of Marshall Ward has taken some drastic turns. His best friend Nathan has left for California. There’s a mysterious killer on the loose. Plus, the public opinion of his alter ego is at an all time low.

Ward’s search for normalcy takes center stage this chapter. Meeting with Mrs. Burnett opens events with a well-placed talk. Both carry scars from the Catalyst War. The writing shows how they cope with the events’ fallout. It leads Marshall into an unlikely spot. His return home is greeted with much awkwardness. Their dialogue drives home the consensus opinion surrounding Radiant Black. This point haunts scenes until a new threat emerges on the scene.

Bludmoon’s appearance mixes up the dynamic for a big win. Seeing Marshall out of his normal element exposes a few things. His powers get tested with Bludmoon not holding back. Readers watch as their fight allows Marshall to release some pent-up rage. Once events shift to New Orleans, the attention shifts to Dylan Siegal. Their unique “friendship” reveals many similarities between both. Young heroes thrown into the deep end while learning how to navigate life. The result leads to a haunting close. Where this path leads Marshall is very uncharted territory.

The weight of Marshall’s actions dominate the art for this chapter. Opening with the candid meeting with Mrs. Burnett, readers see Marshall opening up. This spills into an awkward reunion. The full page image outside of the home pours with the uneasy feeling. As the reunion takes shape, the stern reactions proves not even family loves Radiant Black.

There’s little time to focus on this point. A two page splash brings Bludmoon front and center. There might have been a cameo from a Massiveverse creator kicking this sequence off. Their fight shows the clashes of styles. It leads into a very inopportune moment via full page shot. As events head to New Orleans, the coloring gives Bourbon Street a vibe all its own. The conversation with Dylanm and Marshall mirrors Rogue Sun #26. It still carries the same impact of the lost souls searching. The art gives a solid foreshadowing in the last panels. Where things lead from here is wide open.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.7

Marshall Ward’s evolution in the post Catalyst world takes a personal twist. Higgins and Clark examine the influence of family with the writing. The art blends a fast paced fight within the heavy reactions on display. The Massive-verse franchise continues to redefine superheroes in the modern era.

G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO - DUKE #1 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

Does treason make a sound? That is the question posed in the final mission of a G.I. joe series that has made a lot of noise. The “Silent Missions” series from Skybound Entertainment has challenged the way readers follow the Joes in action. It has been a perfect homage to 1983’s “Silent Interlude” issue. With one mission left, it is only right the face of the franchise gets their turn in this format.

Pacing hits the gas petal and Duke treads through a group attack. Once a main competitor stands up, drastic measures are taken. The images reflect the violent matters at hand. Once that round is over, the book slows down enough to let readers catch breathe.

A full page image of the base conveys a strong message to the hero. Running through a chemical plant leads to a wild melee. The art showcases another wild brawl leading to its’ explosion. The full page hallucination isn’t one to miss. After it wears off, the main event arrives. Craig and Wordie bring out the emotional rage of Duke during this. It leads to more brutal images for its’ close. Readers watch the pull it has on Duke heading into the finish. Events come full circle as the mission closes with a fitting parting shot.

OVERALL GRADE: 9

Duke’s hunt for a traitor gives a strong finish to the “Silent Missions” initiative. Craig and Wordie flood the pages with grit and sheer willpower against the odds. A true glimpse into storytelling at a difficult challenging point. “Silent Missions” proves actions speak louder than words. Don’t miss this run at the LCS!

G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO – ROADBLOCK #1 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

A Cobra convoy heads into a frozen & abandoned forest. Inside one vehicle is a captured G.I. Joe. Their mission appears to have no obstacles in its way. Little do they know there is one man waiting to re-route them. His name is ROADBLOCK. Armed with a .50 cal machine gun, some would say the odds are not in his favor. They would be silently wrong.

Krahnke brings out the best of the physical presence of the fan-favorite Joe. Knowing his knack for rhyming during combat, this is a new side of Roadblock. The feel is an all business approach. Seeing the convoy shocked when a tree falls in their way speaks loudly. The reaction of Cover Girl compliments it with a quick smirk. It doesn’t take long for the bullets to start flying. A near full page image of Roadblock crashing the party sets off events & never looks back.

The action is unapologetic in its silence. There is a sequence of panels showing a Cobra soldier being choked out. How the art focuses on his fading eyes indicates the brutal method of attack. After the rescue attempt is completed, the story is far from over. Krahnke sends in another classic COBRA soldier to intercept.

This allows for a moment Roadblock fans have been waiting for. Another near full page brings out the big guns. It takes readers into an action packed close. There are great combat scenes with much fanfare behind them. This moves the story along to its finish. The art depicts a more light-hearted ending than some may think. In this case, its’ a perfect way to enjoy the silence.

OVERALL GRADE: 9/10

The latest installment of “Silent Missions” brings out the big gun of G.I. Joe lore. Krahnke and Segala deliver on a vintage action adventure which is sure to please. No dialogue needed. This series speaks for itself.

G.I. JOE #6 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

It has all come down to this. COBRA has made their presence felt. Using dangerous technology, the terrorist organization struck without warning. The elite fighting force known as G.I. JOE was dealt a crushing blow. Rock N’ Roll was killed in the line of duty. This broke the heart, but not the spirit of the team.

Duke has rallied the troops into a full-on assault. Their initial play wound up delivering them into the belly of the serpent beast. By sheer luck, Duke and company turned the tables on the COBRA victory. Before Cobra Commander can attempt another move, Duke is right in his face poised to get some revenge!

G.I. JOE #6 by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, Jordie Bellaire and Rus Wooton (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) gives fans the showdown they have all been waiting for!

Let’s not wait another minute & dive into the action!

To say this issue had a “big fight feel” is a vast understatement. Williamson takes readers into an intense meeting of good vs. evil. The parallels between DUKE & COBRA COMMANDER are eerily similar. As the dialogue from Commander dances around the common themes, it is countered by Duke’s rage. This is where the common ground gives way. Commander makes his play. The fate of Washington D.C. is in immediate danger. Where things go from here is into a whole extra gear.

The action blazes onto the page. Williamson structures these pages with well timed breaks. This allows the main event to continue to build. It gives enough moments where the Joe team/Destro event doesn’t feel forced. This leads into the explosive conflict end. Readers can’t deny the adrenaline push as each move is amplified. The conclusion is set up perfectly. Considering it is a first round, it nails the landing. Within the closing pages, more seeds are planted involving the new stat quo. Nothing will be a greater shock than the final page. If there was ever a mic drop moment, Williamson hits it at the key point. There’s no way readers can’t be amped up after this chapter.

Reilly and Bellaire understand the stakes with the art. The build has pushed both faction leaders into their collision course. A fantastic two page spread brings Duke & Commander’s paths into the spotlight. This pushes the art into the combustible moment readers have wanted. Duke’s grittiness is equally matched by the Commander’s confidence. Their back and forth jabs are spilt with great panels. It fuels the rest of the chapter into a fast paced throwdown.

The Joes/Destro segway is brief but hits the needed marks. Reilly hones in on Destro’s disbelief challenged by The Baroness’ bravery. Their reactions maximize their page time. Short but effective. It is well timed considering the other match unfolding. There’s no shortage of blunt, brutal action with Duke and Commander. It comes to a strong, but subtle conclusion. This leads into some reflective closing images. A few panels will pop more than others due to the surprises. None greater than the final page. The full page image changes the game for the Joes as their next phase seems to have evolved.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.5/10

Two roads converge with bullets and bravery in this phenomenal chapter. Williamson orchestrates organized chaos with the wild fighting stages. Reilly, Bellaire and Wooton expose the beginnings of a true “fight forever” with stunning imagery. This book delivers on many levels and never disappoints!

YOUNGBLOOD DELUXE #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

There’s only one chance to make a first impression. In 1992, one book led off a revolution in comics. Seven creators left Marvel to form a game-changing imprint. Their creativity would create the foundation that continues to elevate and excite fans 33 years later. The company is Image Comics. The Book: YOUNGBLOOD.

Many eyes were on this project not just cause of the company start. It also had to do with its’ legendary writer/artist. Knowing who and what he created, there was no doubt this project was generating the early buzz. The creative force? His name is ROB LIEFELD!

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen the team. In its absence, the fans have been clamoring for more. Their requests were finally answered. It was announced in late 2024 that the series was returning to Image in 2025! Kicking off their return is a remastered version of the book that launched everything!

YOUNGBLOOD DELUXE #1 by Joe Casey, Rob Liefeld, Matt Yackey and Rus Wooton brings back Image’s beginnings with an all new vision.

With this introductory chapter, fans can grasp a sense of what this team is all about. At it’s core, Youngblood is about challenging perception vs. reality. Casey’s work tightening up the script helps. The writing spends a fair amount of time introducing key players to the forefront. Shaft gets a great welcome to fans. He also provides a sense of the celebrity balance for this series. Badrock and Chapel get their fair amount of page time. This allows fans to see the diverse personalities handle the high cost of fame.

This theme boils over into the spilt time between “Home” (USA centric) and “Away” (International) squads. Home squad has more of a traditional superhero build. The Away conflict is a reflection of the time period of the 1990s. Readers watch as they handle political ramifications gone wrong.

The writing spares no expense exposing the flaws of these personalities. It all leads into a shocking ending when a member goes rogue. This causes plans to get changed and exemplifies the difficult landscape this team moves through. It’s not all black and white. The greys loom heavy overhead when the spotlight burns bright.

Liefeld knows how to maximize character moments better than most. Shaft makes a dynamic debut stopping a criminal. The panels sell the importance of the hero. It also delves into the uncomfortably feeling of fame. Each notable member of the Home team gets a solid portion of page team. This continues on when they kick into action. They are awarded a two page splash as they head into conflict.

The away team is not to be outdone. They open with a two page image. Readers watch as the tempo picks up when on the attack. One member stands out more than most in this sequence. Psi-Fire’s unstable personality shines in the chaos. His fury leads into the close of the book. The drastic measures taken break the Q rating mark. His bloody attack gets a unique full page. It leads into a colder look at the heroes mission. Some are built for the bright light. Others are built for business. The art covers both to paint this distinct view of heroes.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.5

In its structure, Youngblood blurs the lines of traditional superhero teams. Seeing how heroes are thrown into the public spotlight proves a true challenge. Both teams have obstacles to overcome and the writing doesn’t duck it. Liefeld’s art brings out the intensity of the pressure situations. Years after the debut, there’s still something special about this series that readers shouldn’t look past.

Like David Bowie once said: “Time may change me, But I can't trace time”. Time is having a bit of a crisis. Displaced events fill the streets on normal days. Nothing is ever as it seems. How does someone survive in this kind of world?

ASSORTED CRISIS EVENTS #2 by Deniz Camp, Eric Zawadzki, Jordie Bellaire and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou delves into this anomaly of times for another look at (un)ordinary life.

Early into this series, Camp continues to take readers on an introspective journey. Much like with Ashley in issue one, Jesús is a complex character. His introduction plays into the time displacement with some T-Rex hijinx. In a blink, the boy is a man at his father’s funeral. The writing steers into the personal conflictions of dealing with his father’s actions. It is very frank and slowly peels back their fractured dynamic.

The Red Heifer Meat Solutions provides a multitude of dramatic areas. Readers watch as Jesús and his father grow and fall while in employment of this company. It also sets up the emotional pains of their family. This all leads into some very tragic events. The fallout mirrors Jesús’ broken state. The writing keeps this level of trauma in the forefront. It ultimately leads into a poetic and dark close. With the broken time, moments are more fractured than ever. This leads into a bittersweet close. Camp unloads many emotions before departing in a blink of an eye.

Zawadzki and Bellaire open events with a full page T-Rex image ready to strike. It instantly sets a strong tone for the remainder of the book. The tender moments between Jesús and his mother make an immediate impression. Their bond resonates through the ever-evolving panels. This especially pops off the pages with Bellaire’s coloring. The use of Yellows fades out everything except Jesús’ immediate moments.

This especially works in the Meat Solutions plant. The versatility between red and yellow add a certain feel to the pages. The teal coloring of the father’s downward sprial makes this portion stand out but also covers up Jesús reaction. How the panels transition makes certain moments hit differently. This comes to play with Jesús’ tragedy. Once the chapter goes to the close, the art launches some time chaos in as its’ pace car. This leads into a sequence of broken panels reflecting the time crisis. It lands into an ending page fueled by a touching reminder of love and loss. There is MUCH to applaud with the art.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

Very rarely does a series debut with a challenging concept and raise the bar with each passing page. ACE has found a way to challenge the time concepts with an unmatched emotional counter punch. Camp’s writing hits all the marks. It’s matched by Zawadzki and company blending multiple elements through incredible imagery. There is nothing like this series on the market.

ROGUE SUN #26 (IMAGE COMICS/MASSIVE-VERSE)

A new Rogue Sun has appeared in the Massive-Verse. Aurie Bell is picking up her father’s mantle. This isn’t exactly going over well with Dylan Siegel. He is trying to get focused on defeating Mourningstar once and for all. Having to worry about his half-sister’s involvement is a problem he doesn’t have time for.

If that wasn’t enough, an old/new friend stops by New Orleans to catch up. Some might say this is a bit “Supermassive?” Let’s find out.

One thing that has been evident since issue one is the Bell/Siegel family is anything but normal. The opening discussion between Dylan and Aurie hits its key points. The writing shows Aurie’s naive belief she can outsmart Caleb (the ghost in the armor). Dylan knows first hand how dangerous he can be. Readers watch as their first outing as a “team” goes off the rails. Luckily an old/new friend stops by to help.

Stating the Radiant Black/Rogue Sun interaction is awkward is an understatement. The writing addresses this heads on in fun banter. This rolls events into the main event. Readers watch as the unlikely trio work (somewhat) together to thwart their common foe. The fallout leads to a much anticipated conversation. Knowing what Marshall Ward is going thru in Radiant, his dialogue with Dylan showcases the young heroes growing up too fast. It will strike a chord with the readers. This transitions into a solid parting place for the Bells, but not without worry. It’s another key element that makes Rogue Sun such a great read. Always expected the unexpected.

The art locks in on Dylan’s building anger in the opening pages. This is countered with Aurie’s overconfidence. Once Bludmoon crashes the scene, pacing picks up. Watching the Rogue pair struggle dealing with a rescue attempt allows their guest to make a grand entrance. The half page image bring Radiant Black into the mix. It kicks off a series of great action shots of the trio.

In these moments, the art plays off the writing superbly. Reading Marshall’s eyes shows the readers the oddities of their history. It leads to a great group shot of the trio flying. The full page image kicks off the big throwdown. Each panel seems to feel faster in reflecting the quick action. In its aftermath, the art dive into the uncertainty of Marshall’s new stat quo. Dylan’s brashness works well off Marshall’s doubts. It’s solid perspective on the new hero’s direction. Once at the final page, more danger is teased with the parting panel. All in all, the chapter art gives readers much to enjoy.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

“The Massive’s Finest” meet again for the first time in the post Catalyst era. Parrott & Cotton bring out the heavy questions haunting Marshall and Dylan. Abel and the art team blend the supernatural action with grounded talk between mutuals. It’s destine to give fans a “supermassive” shot on NCBD.

The second is to slowly raise the drama.

A two page spread reveals a major clue. Readers watch as the pages unveil a Cobra base. While searching the area, Peter’s coloring adds more context. The covert moves eventually lead to a shocking discovery. Action starts taking over the panels. It stops to show how painful this challenge has been. Readers watch as Spirit pops a dislocated shoulder back into place. No words. Just simple lines to indicate the pain. The result leads into the closing face-off. There’s no shying away of the brutality. It leaves the audience with a cold reality of the measures taken. The final page concludes events on a more level area. Rest assured the silence still speaks loudly.

Tracking down a deadly hunter reveals more than bargained for on this silent mission. Romero and Peter bring out the strengths and bond of Spirit and Freedom. Only when events finally wear down the warrior does it shift gears. Johnson reveals the master plan of Megatron with a shot of flair. It is a change that throws everything into a dark perspective. The fallout shows readers what it has been trying to teach. Events are now drawn into a newfound direction. It is one that Decepticons, Autobots and Earthlings should fear. A new form of evil has arrived.

Lullabi steps in for art duties. Readers who know his work on Battle Chasers will be excited for the action here. The initial meeting with Dezimir starts with strong images. G.I. JOE: A REAL AMERICAN HERO - BEACH HEAD #1 (IMAGE COMICS/SKYBOUND)

In 1983, a G.I. Joe story was released that was unlike anything fans had seen prior. Issue #21 of the Marvel Comics series led by Larry Hama released “Silent Interlude”. The Snake-Eyes focused tale is legendary. It was the first appearance of Storm Shadow. As impactful as that moment was, it is not the main takeaway from fans.

The story had no dialogue.

Fast forward 42 years later and G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero is having a renaissance under the Skybound Entertainment Banner. The series has restarted in continuation under Hama in 2023. Going in on that success, the line is revisiting this creative style of story telling with “Silent Missions”.

The dire situation reflects the war torn landscape. Hester and Hymel spare no expense on the gritty ordeal. Readers watch as the orphans struggle to survive. This touches a chord with Beach Head. They helped save him. He intends to return the favor.

Once COBRA catches wind of survivors, the issue hits the gas petal. Hester unapologetically brings the brutality of war to this issue. Beach Head must act quickly to survive. Readers sense the mood change when he dons his mask. The mid page panel resonates with readers. Loughridge’s coloring compliments it well when the action starts. It thrusts the survival instinct into the spotlight. Even when one of the children try to get involved, Beach Head acts valiantly.

The fallout plays into a solid finish. It also gives a definitive thought to the readers. Beach Head’s gesture to one of the kids is subtle but reflects change. Sometimes, the past should stay in the past.

Talk about a debut issue! Rosenberg hits the ground running and never looks back. Annalise starts by trying to play Hide And Seek with a robot. As quirky as that sounds, it works to make tempo. The dialogue hits as Annalise just wants time with her dad, Dr. Dante Alderman. Readers watch as the mood shifts to a more grounded level. Disappointment fills Annalise’s voice. Her dad tries spinning out of this. The result is a drastic detour of events.

A simple game reveals more intrigue as Annalise encounters a stranger. The conversation leads to more danger. Readers see as there is MUCH more going on with Annalise’s father. The writing keeps changing styles. This adds more layers on an already engaging tale. Through it all, this is centered around Annalise and her dad. Rosenberg weaves other elements in-between the panels.

Even an agent’s “evening plans” provide some adult humor before catapulting to the close. In mere moments, everything changes again. The chapter closes with an incredible cliffhanger that will have readers locked and loaded. Rosenberg has something special with this one!

Landini (along with Titov and Wordie) make a visually stunning opening chapter. The beginning game shines with the coloring. They create a retro-esque mood as Annalise challenges the robot. It defers to the more cemented backdrop of her father in his lab. There are a few great panels in this mix. One that stands out is Annalise looking at her dad through a chemical glass. Their conversation carries some gravity with it. The use of small panels help move this portion along to its game-changing moment.

The discovery in the basement is given a shocking full page. Its’ resolution mirrors the tense landscape Annalise has just walked into. Readers watch as her dad’s true nature creeps to the forefront. The panels are overflowing with his anger. This gets flipped upside down when Dr. Dante sees Annalise.

Landini and company cover all bases there. After the stop to see Agent Rook, evens race to the end. A two page spread sends everything on its’ axis. If that wasn’t enough, the final page crushes everything. There will be many questions coming form this series. I can’t wait to see what the answers will be.

OVERALL GRADE: 10

Combining elements of Sci-Fi, espionage and family dynamics, Annalise’s journey doesn’t struggle to balance its’ act. Rosenberg’s writing leaps into many themes without losing the audience. Landini and the team keep a distinctive look with superb visuals. Packing so much style and storytelling, readers are absolutely going to be blown away by this!

RADIANT BLACK #32 (IMAGE COMICS / MASSIVE-VERSE)

Marshall Ward is Radiant Black. In the past, that might have been well-received. Due to the events of the Catalyst War, Marshall is not a popular person. With his best friend Nathan gone, Ward is the only one to deal with the backlash. It also isn’t helping a dead body and explosives were waiting for him on a case round-up.

RADIANT BLACK #32 by Kyle Higgins, Joe Clark, Eduardo Ferigato, Rod Fernandes and Becca Carey continues the Massive-verse’ return to the LCS!

Higgins and Clark put a focus on Marshall’s health side for this chapter. After being examined, it is advised he stops whatever is causing his ailments. That will be highly doubtful. The event keeps Marshall grounded long enough to move back to a traditional superhero point. After his doctor appointment, Radiant Black meets up with Kieran’s team. Readers see the shock in Marshall’s reaction to seeing a dead man alive? The problems with alternate timelines. Knowing there is a killer on the loose puts Marshall’s peace at a standstill.

Not everything is all doom and gloom. The writing teases a more light-hearted Marshall adjusting to the dating digital world. It gives just enough of a break until the mysterious killer strikes again. Readers ride along as Radiant Black deals with another threat makes a splash. This leads right into the closing pages. As his new “friend” leaves (after dropping a “Clerks” liner), Marshall’s focus is back to business. Events wrap up on a more upbeat note. This issue lays a solid foundation as Marshall is still finding his way (both mentally & physically) in a new era.

Ferigato and Fernandes construct a solid opening. The conflict of mysterious assailants botched robbery ends with a bang. Marshall’s doctor visit shows the bruises of his other life. The art reflects the wear and tear on him in all aspects. This is short lived due to duty calling. The investigation reveals a new wrinkle at hand. Marshall’s reactions say it all as the shocking news hits. A half page flying shot wraps up some loose ends. The art captures his growing frustration as work/life balance is not becoming a reachable option.

After a full page splash shows Marshall in action, the art team switches up looks. This is very apparent in the dating sequence. The use of tiny panels conveys the challenges for finding someone. One potential suitor gets taken for a ride via a full page image. The mood shifts with another way with a darker half panel. Readers see as the latest victim is found. It is a striking image that shows the grave reality now sinking in. The art team gives the new threat a solid intro image. There is some action but not overwhelming. This all gives way to Marshall talking with Eva in the closing page. The final image will have the fans talking with curiosity. Another solid outing for this creative team.

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The life and times of Marshall Ward take a more normal tone this chapter. Higgins and Clark steer into more traditional challenges via the writing. Ferigato, Fernandes and Carey depict the ever simple moments around the unfolding chaos. When you see “Massive-verse” on the cover, readers know where the bar is set. Rest assured this issue hits the mark.

Williamson cracks everything to 11 with this chapter. Seeing the Joes at their lowest should seal their fate. Duke comes across as defiant to the overwhelming odds. His actions reflect that of either pure bravery or insanity. Readers may actually question this at one point. One action proves to quiet that inquiry long enough to throw everything into high-gear.

The only moment where things slow down is with Cobra Commander. The evil leader is solely focused on obtaining power. Williamson writes him as cold and ruthless as he should be. Commander makes a chilling move. It gets lost in the action but circles back to the close. Readers won’t mind as the action is what they came for. There’s no shortage of that here. As eluded to, events circle back to the Commander. His goals hit a snag in the form of a monster cliffhanger. The only thing wrong with this is we have to wait for next issue. This series just doesn’t miss.

Reilly and Bellaire light the fuse for the combustible face-off in style. A two page spread brings Duke face to face with an “old friend.” Seeing the punches connect gives readers a sense of what to expect. Its aftermath is set up nicely. Even in a beaten state can Duke still appear to win. Readers see the power of “Vroom” come into the spotlight.

Destro’s standoff accelerates the wild action to another gear. It also gives readers a much anticipated moment. I’m genuinely surprised this wasn’t a larger panel. It still delivered on the intended goal. Reilly goes for smaller panels. The compact images don’t take it easy. Pacing is really flying at this stage. Only Cobra Commander’s smaller role slows things down. Save the drastic action, it assist in providing a simple break point. This all leads to a monster final page. The full image sets up a can’t miss event that readers will be jazzed to finally see. Strong work per usual.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.2

Can Duke rally his defeated team for one more round? That is the question posed in this latest chapter. Williamson takes readers for a daring confrontation with the writing. Reilly, Bellaire and Wooton raise the stakes with the non-stop action. This series sets the blueprint for what dramatic action should strive for.

Johnson brings the house down with this latest chapter. The Cybertron portion debuts the latest Autobot in grand fashion. Shredhead’s injection lifts up the scenario. The panels are all big action. It establishes him as a true threat to the Decepticons. The writing gives them a sorely needed win in comparison to the rest of the chapter.

Ultra Magnus’s portion reflects more on the deep emotional wounds he has suffered. The bonding with Carly helps to start healing. Johnson gives these little fleeting spots before throwing more weight on the constant battle.

All of these plots take a back seat to the main event. The Battle of Seattle devlivers on all accounts. Readers watch as the best shots are taken from all sides. Optimus is helplessly watching this brawl take place. No one is ready for the new combatant to enter the field. It is a long awaited return that sends shivers up the audience spines. The fallout launches a new era into effect for the Energon Universe. All bets are off on who will be standing in its wake.

Corona and Spicer put a Hollywood monster fight for the latetr half of this issue. Before that arrives, they give Shredhead a large statement. The action panels leave little doubt about his impact. Case in point is the half page image where someone is shredded. The Ultra Magnus portion is a wide range of fractured responses through healing. Both will connect with readers. They both are shown up by the Seattle brawl.

The art team make this whole sequence feel like a Godzilla-King Kong showdown. Each sides’ Combiner makes a claim for a throne. One stands tall through A TWO PAGE SPLASH CUTTER! The wrestling fan in me marked out seeing this! Starscream and Soundwave’s fight is as vicious as it needs to be. It stops on a dime when a certain return happens via a haunting two page spread. This leads to a striking final image. The darkest hour appears to be setting on the Autobots. Brace for impact.

OVERALL GRADE: 9.8

The war between Soundwave and Starscream ends with a thunderous conclusion. Johnson adds in much emotion with the intense fighting. Corona, Spicer and Wooten construct a devasting melee that shows no mercy. There’s never a doubt at the high level of quality with this series.

The dialogue showcases their friction of topic. It leans into Dylan’s brash arrogance to the hero blueprint. Conventional methods are not too appealing. He wants to forge his own legacy. When a financial offer comes his way to accomplish this, it throws everything in flux.

This allows his step-sister Aurie to (finally!) get her chance to become Rogue Sun. Watching the faustian-esque partnership develop will be a treat for readers. Even when the latest villain crashes the scene, each dynamic takes center stage. Pacing slows things down just enough to sense Dylan’s shock. Knowing who’s helping Aurie spells certain disaster. Even with the new “Sun” on the block, one staple stays true. The closing page turns everything on its axis. Readers won’t see this ending coming! Expect this to be a long wait until next issue.

Abel and Marques set a high bar with the action. Seeing Dylan fighting “normal” bad guys is a new look. It leads to a more tense face off between the pair. Readers can sense the tension is ever building. Each panel carries a unique vibe as all parties argue about what should be done with the role. The drama flows into the Bell household. With each reaction, Dylan’s decision appears to be made for him. That was something quickly opposed as events progressed.

The latest villain gets introduced with a full page image. It leads to some great action shots. Events get upstaged when “Aurie Sun” hits the scene. The half page panel lets her make an immediate impact with readers. From here, the pacing revs up. In the conflict aftermath is a few shocked faces. Once Caleb has been announced as back, the mood changes. It stirs up the drama with Dylan and Marcus again. This leads into the closing moments. All build towards a mic drop moment. The closing image gets a full page to convey its message. It is one that is sure to leave a huge impression as Dylan’s path becomes clear.

Sins of the past strike a nerve as a new hero makes their debut. Parrott and Cotton’s writing delve into the rebuilding bond of family. Abel and the team keep pages balanced with quick action and deeper drama. The final page is sure to have Massiveverse fans talking about the future.

The attack creates a ripple effect that’s bad for business. Shay’s focus move back to retaining control when doubts start creeping in. Readers watch as the payoff becomes a diversion to take the heat off the organization. It appears the plan might backfire in this stage as the last page dictates.

As for Shaw, his role in this equation becomes a touch more clearer. The writing starts unveiling the biological methods used. This comes to light when Shaw finally meets the Queen. Readers get some key info before events shift back to Shay’s long game. At times, it moves very quick to fully nail its’ mark. There’s still enough intrigue that isn’t lost in the shuffling.

Henderson drops another gem with the art. The opening pages in the dark swamp sets a brooding tempo. It matches the same mood of Ash and Benji’s story portion. There’s a sense of relief with the Beekeeper’s diagnosis. It appears short lived when an examiner starts diving into Quinn. Knowing how the tampering plays out, it draws more heat on a growing fire.

Shaw’s encounter with the Queen carries a sense of uneasiness. The art reflects the power play being enforced by the Queen. It also unveils a surprising factor into their dynamic. Readers can get the understanding of Shay’s set-up. It connects enough before the story jumps to a show of force at a business meeting. A solid action sequence puts Shay’s plans in motion. Camp presents many elements for this debut chapter Ashley is a reluctant lead in this new world. Her “normal” day is compromised by an ever changing environment. From day to day, there is no certainty of what to expect. Ice Ages to deadly viruses are common day occurrences. Hollywood filmmakers are cashing in on the damaged surroundings. All the while, Ashley is trying to live a normal life. The results are far from that.

Events take more of a personal turn as she moves onward. Readers see the toll taken as time displaces everything. The writing isn’t afraid to take events into dark places. Ultimately, this story is Ashley’s. Readers can sympathize with her fading hope. It centers to an antique clock with sentimental value. Even when there is some sense of compliance, moods turns quickly back into wanting normalcy. The close throws everything into the air as events change again. Its’ fallout leaves many questions in its wake. If this is any indication of what to expect, readers will be happily surprised at what they witness.

Zawadzki and Bellaire set up pages with unconventional panels. The technique mirrors the unstable periods crashing this world. Ashley’s “normal” start is sprinkled in with some of the time variables. A two page splash indicates she is part of a larger production…or vice versa. Bellaire’s coloring brings out the most of these displaced moments. It gives a very distinct uncertainty of what to expect.

The moments with Clock shops jump out from most scenes. From the lettering to the colors, everything about these pages pop. Ashley’s more regular moments are filled with steady emotional reactions. Trying to process what’s unfolding is not easy. The art team demonstrate the ever-changing expressions with ease. This leads right into the strong close. Using new coloring, the event feels different. Paired with the faster tempo and it leaves readers questioning much. This is exactly what you want for a debut.

The concept of time displacement is always a gamble for comics. Within these pages, a new perspective is given. Camp crafts a story of pain and loss through a consistently evolving lead. Zawadzki and company take fresh approaches to display the combustible surroundings. The Hype is real! This is absolutely going to blow people away!
