With an invested party watching, Duke is in a claw grip of the android soldier. Emerging from the shadows is a character G.I. Joe fans have been waiting for: DESTRO!

The charismatic arms dealer pleads his methods in an attempt to sway Duke. Knowing what Duke has gone through, does this give the hunted fugitive a way out?

Readers watch as Duke answers with a triumphant answer. The result pits man vs. machine. With answers looming on the other side, Duke must find a way to overcome the odds one more time. Can he do it?

With the signature action the series has been known for, the stakes have never been higher. The conclusion brings forth a new direction for the Energon Universe. If fans think they’ve seen it all, they haven’t seen anything yet.

Williamson caps off events with a strong finale. Destro gets a huge introduction into the spotlight. The banter with Duke and him proves to raise tensions even higher. The fallout throws the gas pedal down. This leads right into a knockdown, drag out brawl fitting for the fandom.

Reilly crafts blockbuster action with Duke’s conflict with the B.A.T. This is only rivaled by the full page reveal of Destro in all his glory. The image sets the tone for his place in the Energon Universe moving forward. Leaving that moment, its’ back to big action imagery.

The panels continuously grow until its’ explosive end. The epilogue moments provide a solid foundation to where things lead to next. Rest assured, the parting panel makes a loud statement before saying goodbye for now, but not for long.

The beginning journey of Duke in the Energon Universe leaves a lasting impression with an impactful finale. Led by Williamson’s outstanding writing, the flagship character of G.I. Joe scores a massive win. Factor in the magnificent art of Reilley, Bellaire and Wooden and there’s no doubt of why this series has been such a huge hit with fans.

The chapter begins with the Commander begin led to an underground chamber by Ripper. Lying inside is a very relieved doctor. He thinks the Commander has come to save him. Little does he know what’s happening above the ground.

The Nemesis Enforcer of Cobra-La is laying waste to the Dreadnoks. Zandar and Zarana are hiding and planning a counter attack. They push Buzzer out in the open to be a distraction. The enforcer swoops in and breaks Buzzer’s arm. Zarana doesn’t take a killshot attempt. This forces the remaining Dreadnoks to flee for safety. The enforcer lets them flee as the mission is below the surface.

Once the Commander emerges, he divulges his findings and plans what’s next. However, there appears to be a change in plans.

Readers watch as true plans are revealed. It escalates business as the Commander shows why he is a ruthless figure to oppose. The ending act brings events to a crashing halt. It leads the audience to see another player is entering the fold. How will the ultimate power play end?

With Ultimate power at stake, is there anything off limits? Williamson lights the match for a very combustible situation. Seeing the work over the scientist is vintage Cobra Commander. The lying and deceit is justified in his mind. This folds into the conflict of this chapter. The Commander knows what’s at stake and plans for the unexpected.

The action levels up as readers see why the scientist is so dangerous. The writing portrays Commander as an underestimated foe time in and time out. The closing moments throw everything in flux as someone is looming in the distance that will change things forever in the rise of evil.

Milana and Leoni deliver on big action involving the Enforcer. The half page panel of Buzzer’s arm being broken is an intense moment. Wooten’s lettering amplifies the violent outcome. This counters the reveals of what the Commander has been searching for.

The mannerisms displayed indicate the wonderment of knowing what power lies await. This is quickly derailed with a strong panel showcasing a standoff. With a new fight brewing, the action panels grab readers attention. This ends with an incredible full page image dealing the final blow. Fans are gifted a great parting shot leading to a showdown long overdue. There is much to enjoy with this chapter.

With power within his reach, Cobra Commander is dealt a surprising roadblock in this latest issue. Williamson’s writing brings out the best (and most evil) of the lead character. Milana and Leoni deliver on thunderous action sequences while building the foundation to a can’t miss finale.

The issue begins with a flashback to Cybertron. An Autobot unit leads an assault onto a holding area. The Decepticons are onto their attack. It turns into a losing effort as the onslaught pours down on the team. Elita sneaks into the building. What she finds is a literal shell of someone she used to know.

The events shift to Earth. A battleship (USS Henry Harrison) is summoned to investigate “Robots” on the coast of Washington. Readers quickly find out that who they’re looking for might not be so welcoming.

The remaining Decepticons from the battle with Optimus Prime’s forces have a meeting about their future. Soundwave calls for Starscream to step down as leader. This doesn’t go well with the ineffective leader of the group. Under Decepticon law, this action is needed to be handled via trail by combat.

Readers sit back and watch as Soundwave and Starscream battle for the crown. It is a vicious battle with a startling outcome. Once the smoke clears, Autobots need to brace for what is coming. Can they overcome another fight while still recovering? They may not have another option. The closing moments dictate there is no rest for the wicked. A decree is thrown down that will ignite a fanbase to another incredible story.

Johnson doesn’t brake from the fast pacing of the series with its’ latest chapter. The trial for Decepticon control features Soundwave in an unlikely role. Always being Megatron’s loyal right hand, Johnson brings Soundwave’s unwavering allegiance to their mission to the forefront. Readers see a glimpse of the levels he goes to achieve success. The fallout sets course for a new sense of urgency. This plays well to the leader’s counterpart - Optimus Prime.

Prime gives readers a sense of the toll the previous arc has taken on the Autobot leader. The writing reflects Prime’s shaken attitude but unbreakable will. What effects this will have long term is unknown. In the short time, readers are gifted a very well-balanced introduction chapter.

Corona steps into the art role ad doubles down on the big action. The fighting between StarScream and Soundwave is brutal and unforgiving. Each panel screams of the intense action portrayed. Even when Soundwave fights unfair, the art shows there is no limits he won’t go to win. This leads into a half page panel that announces to the readers who is the one left standing in Decepticon rule.

The autobots get their fair share of page time as well. In the Cybertron period, readers see a near full page visual of who lies in captivity. This is fast forwarded to Prime reliving the previous issue events. The closing images show Prime returning to focus with a near full page panel. All in all, the winning formula of drama and action continues to stay balanced for the readers.

“If you aim for the crown, you had best not miss” is a perfect way to sum up Decepticon mentality in this latest issue. Johnson’s writing leans heavy into the big battles readers know and love. Corona steps in for art duties and gifts fans with the winning formula this series has been known for. Its’ conclusion lays down a proclamation that might not be able to be kept, but only time will tell that story.

For this entry, the Energon Universe franchise lands back in comic shops with a brand new chapter. Carving its own space on the shared G.I. Joe/Transformers Universe for Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics is VOID RIVALS. The series that started the movement is in the midst of its’ new arc with a dangerous new player entering the game.

VOID RIVALS #8 BY Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Patricio Delpeche and Rus Wooton have Darak and Solila running in the Wastelands of Zertonia. Little do they know that’s the least of their problems.

Let’s take a closer look at how things play out.

Zertonia has not been too kind to Darak and Solila. The unlikely pair are on the run. Premier Zalilak is willing to cross a line to stop them from uniting the colonies. Zalilak has unleashed Proximus to eliminate the pair.

This chapter begins with a flashback to a young Solila. She’s preparing her brother Polada for combat. With youthful emotions, Polada struggles with what’s coming. An impromptu fight breaks out between the both. Suddenly time jumps to the present.

Solila stands out in a gaze. Darak asks what’s going on. Solila brushes it off, claiming there’s no way Zalilak would dare send the person she was thinking of.

As the pair moves forward, Proximus speeds in pursuit. The duo stops to rest thinking that a possible destination could be in reach. This is until Proximus makes a bold entrance to detour their path.

With a fight to the death looming, has luck finally run out? Readers watch as the action picks up. Its resolution leaves a notable impact. None will be greater as the final page. The parting image indicates plans may have gravely changed from the original course.

Proximus makes a grand entrance for this chapter via Kirkman’s plot. The mysterious hunter comes across as a driven, merciless soul. This is in stark contrast to the more light-hearted Darak. Solila remains the standout character in this series with her insight and reactions to their threat.

The flashback sequences elude to more as the issue goes forward. It only amplifies the outcome of the encounter between the three. Kirkman lays into the battle in the latter portion of the chapter. This is an easy win with readers as the moment carries a certain feel to the fight. The fallout changes up the original path which is another bonus of an already engaging saga.

De Felici and company make a splash with introducing Proximus with a near full one-page panel. This is followed up by an excellent two-page spread of Proximus making the first strike. Wooden’s lettering amplifies the attack tenfold.

Once the dust settles there, De Felici and Delpeche give readers some great fighting panels. Even to the moments of a helmet slowly breaking, the art team leaves nothing to chance with this encounter. The final page is a full page vision that will be haunting some readers until the next chapter drops. It’s a perfect mic drop moment with big indications.

Making an instant impact, Proximus enters the Void Rivals saga with an action packed debut. Kirkman sets the stage with thrilling writing. The art carries the heavyweight fight feel with every action image. With a show-stopping final page, this will be a book fans will be buzzing about.

GEIGER #1 (GHOST MACHINE/IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to a special edition of Parlay Points. It’s the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

In a short amount of time, an upstart company has taken the comic book and pop culture world by storm. With a roster of creators that reads like an all-star team, fans have been dialed in on every move. From New York Comic Con in 2023 to their giant sized debut one-shot in January 2024, the buzz has been undeniable.

The company is GHOST MACHINE

In a bold and daring move, Ghost Machine is unleashing their first wave of books all on the same day ("Ghost Machine Day" - April 3rd, 2024).

Along with Rook:Exodus (art by Jason Fabok) and Redcoat (art by Bryan Hitch), a character that first debuted in 2021 returns in an ongoing series with its' original creative team back for the ride.

GEIGER #1 by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Brad Anderson and Rob Leigh (GHOST MACHINE/IMAGE COMICS) blazes its' path into the unnamed universe.

Johns hits the ground running right where the one-shot left off. Tariq Geiger is a conflicted soul. Finding purpose after losing his family in the events of the Unknown War, Geiger is on the move.

In a small town, Geiger wastes no time handling injustice in a very violent way. Johns crafts him as "a good guy but not a nice guy". His methods are vicious and cold. His reasons have good intentions behind them. They are a reflection of the emptiness felt in the new world.

The dynamic with his unlikely "sidekick"? Nate provides a break from the normal brooding periods readers have witnesses. Nate is a lost soul in his own right. Looking for purpose in a man with no clear direction, Nate is written as a sad soul but ultimately has some signs of a possible better future.

Geiger never escapes his past with flashback sequences that remind fans what this whole line is based on: Characters first. Factor in a building final act and the debut hits all the marks ushering in this new line with style and substance.

Frank , Anderson and Leigh display the future (25 years from now) as a lawless and brutal landscape. Geiger exemplifies this point with a gorgeous two page full spread handling the problems in the town he is passing by. There is no shortage of extreme justice with these images. It sets a strong pace for the remainder of the chapter.

Nate and Geiger's encounter is filled with uneasiness and confusion. The reactions on both faces clearly connect to readers on where the personalities will be clashing. Leigh's lettering brings in the next conflict with a half page panel. The action is well times with Anderson's coloring elevating the mere Prescence of Geiger on his attackers. A near full page panel is perfectly quoted with "He's absolutely glorious" as Geiger ascends down to fight.

The flashback moments with Tariq and his family continue to ground the hero. It never lets him (or the reader) lose sight of the human behind the force of nature. The parting images tease what's next like what great storytellers do. Geiger #1 is no exception to that.

With all eyes of the comic world waiting with baited breath, the Ghost Machine's walking weapon returns in a monster way. Johns' superb writing ties in the conflict internally as well as the unnamed universe's latest onslaught. Frank, Anderson and Leigh gift readers with intense visuals that leave nothing to chance. There's no way anyone reads this and doesn't immediately go "THIS is what storytelling is all about"!

THE DEAD LUCKY #12 (BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE/IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of a Massive-verse Pillar’s second arc. Since returning to her hometown of San Francisco, Bibiana Lopez-Yang has been challenged by Morrow. The tech company and its boss Jimmi Moss has plans of changing the city. Being a reluctant hero, Bibi has been thrusted into the role of protector.

The battle for San Francisco has not been easy or without loss. Bibi’s former boyfriend and longtime ally Eddie Martinez was a casualty of this conflict. Conflicting matters more has been the re-appearance of Pyre. With everything she has gone through, Bibi continues to act by a certain motto: “I don’t need to be good. I just needs to be lucky.”

THE DEAD LUCKY #12 by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO AND BECCA CAREY (along with editor Michael Busuttil) brings the battle of San Francisco to a stunning finish.

Let’s take a closer look and see how events play out.

Bibi and Pyre watch the chaos unfold between Morrow’s forces and Bibi’s small mech team. The conversation doesn’t go the way Bibi would like. She talks of teaming up to end things once and for all. Pyre is more intent on watching the world burn. Unwilling to just sit by, Bibi leaves the talk.

Meanwhile, Jimmi Moss has become a twisted version of a “better tomorrow”. Moss has turned himself into a type of cyborg to fend off a terminal illness. He’s taking the mayor hostage. Moss wants chaos and won’t stop till he gets it.

The stage is set as Bibi makes her way to the Mayor’s office. What chance does Bibi have of ending Moss’s streak of terror? Readers sit back and watch how the actions of both have led to this very explosive meeting.

The fallout is well paced as a battle of this proportion isn’t so cut and dry. Most importantly, the fallout effects Bibi in a strong evolution of character. The closing act is a bittersweet epilogue to the battle. Readers can expect a wide range of emotions with Bibi’s words guiding them along the way.

The final page is a perfect way to say good bye for now, but definitely NOT forever….

Flores brings a fitting and intense close to the latest chapter of Bibi’s journey. For this second arc, much time has been devoted to Pyre’s return and his impact. The opening monologue reflects the deep rooted ties of their past. It also serves as a sort of closure for the pair as this entire run has been constructed for one certain showdown….

The confrontation between Bibi and Moss gives readers a long awaited payoff. Flores’ writing shows the natural growth of Bibi in her role of hero. There is one moment which highlights this over others. The transformation from revenge driven mindset to protector of the city is exemplified within this moment. The epilogue is a heartfelt send-off to one chapter of Bibi’s life as she welcomes a new one ahead. It’s a superb closing point in the ever-changing world for one Bibiana Lopez-Yang.

Carlomagno, Iacono and Carey multi-task the intense drama and big action for this conclusion. The opeing pages reflect those themes. From Bibi’s reaction to the battle right to the big battle itself, the art team brings out all the stops for the art.

Another major image is when Bibi crashes the Mayor’s office. It’s a mid page panel that structures the page into a turning point. The pacing keeps events moving forward with ease. The conflict is officially over with a full page image of Bibi speaking about her dreams.

The final pages help lift the weight of the strong writing to carry the book to the finish line. The parting image is well-crafted and will leave readers on a high note for the future.

The latest chapter of Bibiana Lopez-Yang ends on a solid, bittersweet ending. Flores’ writing showcases the growth of not only a hero but the person behind the powers. Carlomagno, Iacono and Carey put together the impactful imagery that concludes events for time being, but readers will be lucky to see more down the road.

The chapter begins with the attack on the Pit in full swing. More soldiers from Major Bludd’s group decent onto the building. Stalker is holding them back in a losing effort. His situation is ironically more controlled than what lies beneath the Pit…

The Baroness has Duke at gun point. After shooting Major Bludd last issue, she is poised to collect the bounty on Duke’s head. Duke bluntly tells her to get it over with after telling her what the fallout will be with her actions. With the amount of people looking for Duke and his information, there is no such thing as a certain pay day. The Baroness backs off. Stalker gets the drop on her. Duke says to hold his attack.

With Clutch and Rock n Roll in tow, Duke leads them on an escape from the soldiers moving in. There is no turning back. There’s only one way out for the group. They need to dive further underground.

Readers witness as the unlikely allies prepare to ascend and take the fight to Bludd’s forces. The conflict hits the gas pedal and never lets up. How will the alliances hold up? With time running out, choices are made. One steers Duke onto a new path. Greeting him might be the answers he is searching for. However, there’s an obstacle in his path on the final page that might derail plans once and for all!

One thing is for certain: If you want action, you have come to the right place! Williamson orchestrates huge moments while delving into Duke’s complex situation. The conversation with the Baroness is filled with an uneasy tone of reluctant trust. Fans will gravitate towards how Duke takes over running the escape mission. For any new readers to the fandom, it’s prime example of how he has become the legendary leader of G.I. Joe.

Williamson also sets events in motion for the finale through this chaotic scene. Duke is written as unbreakable much like his spirit. This drives the final act forward. Once events lead to the closing pages, the writing places the key players in their spots for what will be no doubt a classic finale.

Reilly and Bellaire spare no expense in giving fans bold action images. The face-off with Baroness and Duke is boiling over with tension and anxiousness. Duke’s demeanor shines through leading to its’ eventual outcome. The escape from the Pit kicks off with a HUGE two page spread that locks readers in for the action.

Wooton’s lettering here is the perfect touch to the frantic motion going on. These images guide readers into a solid final act. The closing full page panel will have readers pacing for the final to drop. It’s another sign of fantastic work from this creative team.

With danger at every turn, the franchise of the G.I. Joe fandom shows why he is that of legend with another excellent read. Williamson constructs a hero’s unbreakable will through his writing. Reilly, Bellaire and Wooten give fans much to be excited about with their energetic action imagery. All signs point to an epic finale based off this strong lead-in chapter.

The never-ending quest for power has led right to the door steps of the Dreadnoks. If last issue’s ending is any indication, the road to victory is sinking fast.

The issue begins with the Commander’s mysterious “bodyguard” walking through the Florida everglades. The Commander is missing. Readers witness that he’s been taken underwater by the swamps’ inhabitants. When a harpoon enters the water, it picks up the Commander out of the jaws of danger…for now.

Meanwhile, Zatana is addressing the rest of the Dreadnoks at their bar hangout. She unveils a valuable object. Readers see first hand an Energon Cube! The mood shifts to optimism. The conversation delivers a note of someone who was snooping around the swamp as well. Zandar walks in with a captured Cobra Commander!

What do the Dreadnoks do with their prisoner? Readers see first hand how unwelcomed guests are treated. However, the breaking of the Commander isn’t so easy. Someone has to walk away with the upper hand. The closing pages reveal a clear cut winner. It also greets readers with a surprise entrant into the fray. With a final page that is guaranteed to leave an impression, the quest for Energon looks to be talking a deadly detour into uncharted waters.

Williamson dives head first into the dark levels surrounding the search for power. Seeing the amount of violence involved, the chapter walks a fine line of horror. The Dreadnoks are featured as pawns thinking they’re royalty. This plays into the scheming and cunning of the Commander. Once the true game begins, it is an easy connect with readers of who is in charge. The ironic poetry of the closing page is perfect to lead the audience into the story’s next phase.

Milana and Leoni don’t pull their punches with the acts of torture in this issue. It gets taken to another level with the creative use of looking thru The Commander’s eyes for a few panels. This translates greater when the Commander makes his move. Readers will also be blown away by a gorgeous two full page spread giving a certain character a dramatic debut.

Events are concluded on a superb note. Wooden’s lettering is the star of the final page. The words continue to build and elevate an already dangerous situation. It complements a complex game with a clear cut winner emerging.

FINAL POINT: 9

All is fair game in the quest for power. Through Williamson’s excellent storytelling, the face of COBRA stands off against the Dreadnoks in a brutally strong manner. Milana, Leoni and Wooden craft the extreme actions taken leading to a show-stopping finish. The horror-driven tale delivers another winning chapter.

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of an exciting first arc of a returning fandom. Ever since they re-debuted in the pages of Void Rivals #1, the TRANSFORMERS have become the talk of comic fans once again.

The current series has been nothing short of a runaway success. Each issue has been jam-packed with drama and BIG action. Now heading to the finish line of their first story under Skybound and Image Comics, Optimus Prime and company look to end events with a BANG!

With their arrival on Earth, the Autobots and Decepticons have brought a never-ending battle to a world not ready for it. There have been casualties and damage galore. Through it all, Optimus Prime and his group have been the only thing holding Starscream and his soldiers back from taking over everything.

The fight has been brought right to the crashed ship where it all began. Starscream has set the trap. He’s unleashed DEVASTATOR onto the Autobots. Who will be left standing in the end?

This issue begins with The Autobots and Sparky Whitwicky looking for cover as Devastator starts its’ attack. Cliffjumper and Carly race into the battle. Carly swerves Cliffjumper out of direction to get higher ground to attack. The pair is greeted by Starscream for a showdown of the ages.

The Autobots reclaim their spaceship but Devastator still pushes its’ onslaught. With more wounded transformers mounting, things are looking bleak. Even the great Optimus Prime looks like his final moments are approaching.

Readers watch as the darkest hour approaches. An ultimate sacrifice is made. Will it be enough to turn the tide? With unrelenting action, the battle is taken to a whole different level of intensity. Choices are made and lines are drawn.

The fallout packs the emotional weight of all of Cybertron. There are strong images declaring victory but none like the final image. That one concludes events with a somber moment showing the high cost of victory.

Take about ending things on a mic drop moment. Johnson weaves in the heartfelt toll of combat throughout this issue. The opening displays the frantic attempt of survival for the wounded Autobots. Optimus Prime is written as the powerful leader he is, even in a heavily damaged body. This leads into the ultimate sacrifice previously mentioned. Once that moment hits page, Readers will be caught up in the powerful turning point.

From there, it’s nothing but big action. The visions of Optimus fighting back steal each page. No matter what condition, the art reflects his fighting spirit. There is a mind-blowing THREE PAGE ending to the main event. The two-page full spread is jaw dropping of its’ impact. The resolution still conveys the price paid in conflict. The reactions run high for all parties involved. Johnson captures them with ease. This all builds towards the final page. The closing panel might make some eyes water as the adrenaline wears off. It’s a defining image that will leave readers in a bittersweet place until next time.

FINAL POINT: 10

The first arc of Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers brings the house down with a rollercoaster of big action and bigger emotion. Readers will be blown away by the intense art and even more impactful writing. It’s high level storytelling that is way more than meets the eye.

October 2023 - Aaron Kern is out of jail. The public knows him as “The Accountability Killer”. Due to a technicality in his confession, Kern is now free. His father, Former assistant Chief Ben Kern, looks to stop his son before another body is killed. In searching for answers, Ben Kern and reporter Julia Paige piece together the identity of the copycat killer of Kern’s M.O.: Bartender Harrison Gill.

Working with the Pittsburgh Police Dept., Kern sets a sting to catch Gill. Gill runs away after stabbing an officer. While leaving the scene, Gill’s mask and a gun are found in his car.

This issue begins with a meeting at the Pittsburgh PD headquarters led by Chief Mixon. There’s a briefing about tracking down Gill. Readers find out he might be hiding in the woods as he has been off the grid for a few weeks. Before adjuring, Detective August Singh mentions about the .38 special and the forensic report now in the possession of the Pittsburgh Ledger.

The report is tied to a police shooting of the past. Thirty Five years ago to be exact. Once readers find out who was involved, the course of the case shifts gears into new territory.

The public outcry differs away from the case at hand. The new information brings out the Weiss Macht Brotherhood, a far-right militant group. They have an axe to grind with the names mentioned in the report.

What follows next is a high-stakes affair where lives are in danger. The thrills don’t falter as the story speeds for the final moments. Once they hit, the story heads back into focus with more secrets poised to be revealed.

Just when you think you have the story figured out, Higgins and Buccellato change the questions. Throwing in a new side plot this late in the tale might not work. However, the pacing allows for the moment to build steam and give more intrigue into Ben Kern. Once thought of as a moral compass, the new plot shows not everything is cut and dry.

His current stat quo changes everything heading into the finale. With the introduction of the new “social group”, they provide some insight to how this story is affecting the people of Pittsburgh to a certain degree. The closing brings events back into focus towards the case. This might have been a small detour but one that gives fans a moment to brace as things speed to a close.

Borges returns to art duties after a small break. The build toward the gun reveal works as it leads to a full page newspaper shot. Readers can easily sense the dramatic shift within the story. The media reaction is presented with great use of panels.

The action panels with the WMB are fast paced and never slow down. The frantic images hit their marks in bringing the danger front and center. The closing moments slow things down to where the story comes back to the original investigation. It’s a serious image to lead readers into the home stretch of this incredible series.

FINAL POINT: 9

The Massive-Verse’s biggest mystery adds more dynamics into an already complex story. Led by the superb writing of Higgins and Buccellato, a character’s image is revealed to be shattered. Through the excellent images of Borges, Englert & Otsmane-Elhaou, fans are treated to a detour in plot before returning into focus for the main course to be served.

Darak and Solila are an unlikely pair. Representing different colonies, their paths have crossed. Since that point, things have been “complicated to say the least. Their escape from Zertonia has now led them into the Wastelands.

Premier Zalilak is none too happy with the pair. He knows what will happen if they succeed in uniting the colonies. He’s willing to unleash a great threat onto them. Zalilak has made the choice to revive Proximus.

The issue opens up with a flashback ten years prior. It reflects Darak’s first venture into the Wastelands. In the present, a plan is reached. Solila has reservations but desperate times call for equal measures. The pair heads into the unknown…

Meanwhile, the deal between Zalilak and Proximus is being struck. Readers quickly find out there is more to this deal than anyone realizes. Once it is struck, the course of action switches gears.

How will Darak and Solila be able to handle the oncoming threat? Their journey leads to many obstacles along the way. Judging by the final pages, there is more vested parties interested in what’s next. The second arc is wasting no time in turning up the drama.

Kirkman starts this new arc shrouding it in mystery. The landscape of the Wastelands turns into its’ own character. The mystique of the land has an impact on Darak that ill only be more telling. The writing of the pair’s conversation continues to be a strength of the series. It’s an extreme odd couple that provides many scenarios for this journey to head into.

The dynamic between Zalilak and Proximus is a show-stealer. Kirkman builds their tense partnership up until a shocking reveal. Readers will be locked into what Proximus does next. it can only lead to no good, which is always a win for the the audience.

De Felici and Delpeche give Proximus a grand entrance. The “agreement” portion of his time plays into his arrogance and self-belief. This is instantaneously switched when his true self is revealed. It’s a shocking moment that adds more once the full page panel shows his final image.

There are some great two-page spreads depicting the Wastelands. It establishes the rough terrain that the pair needs to venture through. The art team gives it a certain look which makes it seem like its’ own character. This ties into the final act. Once the chapter arrives at this point, the final image proves we’re only getting started on the journey for unity.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The second phase of The Energon Universe’s pace setter dives heavy into story in its latest chapter. Kirkman keeps readers on their toes with a pivotal character introduction. The art gives a bold welcome of the new player into the story with solid imagery. Where we go from here is anyone’s guess but you don’t want to miss out.

Last readers saw Duke, he was locked up in the PIT. After his encounter with the Decepticon StarScream, Duke was put on leave from service. In that time, he had become involved with a bigger conspiracy involving M.A.R.S. Industuries. With vital information in his hands from Dr. Adele Burkhart, Duke is evading all comers in an attempt to clean his name.

Luck ran out as he (and Clutch) were brought in by Stalker and Rock N’ Roll. In their holding cell, readers see that they have familiar company. In the next cell is THE BARONESS!

This chapter begins with M.A.R.S. Industries moving operations. A voice is informing someone of the situation at hand. It’s revealed that Major Bludd has been hired to complete loose ends involving Duke.

Meanwhile at the PIT, The Baroness is pleading her case to escape. Duke is caught up in his own thoughts to care. With being ignored with her status, she lashes out. Duke responds by breaking down her file.

Their time to bicker is short lived as Bludd and his forces make a bold attack onto the Pit!

Readers watch as the action is turned all the way up! Can Duke survive this latest obstacle? In between the bullets and explosions, choices are made. None will be bigger than the final page! Brace for a show stopping moment that is sure to leave fans wanting more immediately! It’s another hit chapter!

Williamson continues the fast paced excitement which has become the series trademark. The re-introduction of The Baroness is short and to the point. It’s detailed enough to know she brings an element of deception with her. This comes into play once the action starts.

Speaking of which, the attack by Bludd starts off big with the aerial assault. Once events progress further, the writing showcases Duke’ unrelenting will to win. Even with its’ accelerated pace, the key moments are set up superbly to connect with readers. The closing moments are another sensational twist which hits nothing but home runs. This series continues to get better with every page.

Reilly, Bellaire and Wooton lock readers in to the energetic visuals early. There is an excellent two page spread for Baroness’ origin. The pages are filled with spy imagery and mystery fitting for the character.

The fighting kicks of with another strong two page spread of Bludd and his forces descending onto the Pit. It’s a perfect pace-setter for what follows next. The emotions run high with each following panel. The closing page pulls off a huge surprise leaving readers on the edge of their seats. It’s another huge win for the creative team with this one!

The introduction of the Baroness complicates Duke’s journey in the latest chapter. Williams delivers on big action and drama with fantastic writing. Reilly and the team construct blockbuster imagery fitting of the adrenaline rush that has made this series a staple on New Comic Book Day.

Wit Starscream leading the charge, the Decepticons have made an immediate impact on Earth. From dealing devasting losses to the Autobots and humans alike, the terror is slowly taking over. Luckily, there’s one figure still standing in their way: Optimus Prime.

Prime is leading the wounded Autobots into battle. During an altercation, Prime lost his arm. His replacement is one that sent shockwaves through the fandom. IT’S MEGATRON’S RIGHT ARM!!!!

With Energon becoming sparce, things look bleak. There appears to be a chance to swing momentum back in their favor. A play is made to acquire more power. Will it be enough?

The issue begins with a flashback sequence between Prime and Sparky Whitwicky. Both are recapping their times during war via memories. The conversation showcases the tolls their battles have taken.

Meanwhile, Starscream is back at the Autobots crashed ship. After Skywarp was dismantled by Starscream, the attention shifts to bringing back fallen Decepticons with his being. With more being brought back to workign condition, Starscream’s army looks poised to win.

They head en route to a dam housing a generator. With game-changing power at stake, the Autobots attempt to revive their forces. However, once Starscream and company arrive, the battle starts up again!

What enfolds next is the high level action this series has become known for. It’s non-stop thrills and panels that will blow you away. Once the story shifts into the final moments, fans should expect a BIG surprise in the closing pages! Brace for impact!

Johnson comes out swinging for the fences again with another big issue! The conversation between Sparky and Prime gives readers an insight on the toll fighting has taken on the pair. It also shows Sparky letting his guard down and leaning into trusting Prime. Seeing Starscream’s manipulations of the fellow Decepticons builds a strong moment for when Megatron eventually returns. The lying and trickery adds to the levels he will go to acquire and hold onto power.

Once the battle begins, Johnson showcases his talents of blending the drama with electrifying action. Readers can’t help but become locked and loaded into seeing how Prime and company can survive this round. There is so much emotion behind every attack. Heading into the final moments, the build carries into a strong ending. There is no way readers can’t be on the edge of their seats at the closing page.

That all has to do with the phenomenal full panel introduction of a familiar face. It’s a great exclamation point to the res of the chapter. From the opening sequence, Johnson’s use of panels gives readers a solid comparison to Sparky and Prime’s paths. The action elevates after that with stunning art. Ranging from a half page visual from the dam to Prime striking with his new weapon, there is no shortage of BIG moments. It is literally everything you want from a Transformers book!

Through the creative vision of Daniel Warren Johnson, the world of the Transformers continues to be a must-read series! Strong writing balances the full-throttle action imagery to give fans much to be excited about. This series continues to set a high bar few will reach.

Spiraling from the events of Transformers #2, a familiar face is now on the run. Conrad S. Hauser aka Duke has been framed for murders of Dr. Adele Burkhart and her “alien survivors” group. This all stems from Duke’s investigation into M.A.R.S. Industries.

Before her death, Burkhart gave Duke an item with her research. With this information, the hunter has become the hunted. Duke is looking for somewhere to hide and regroup. His journey has led him to the home of Lance J. Steinberg aka Clutch.

The old friends reunite and not a moment too soon. Duke is injured from his encounter with the “police” (M.A.R.S. military). When they start mending Duke, the information given from Burkhart was activated.

What is on the device? Readers see a map with notable locations on it. One spot stands out in the Midwest of the US. The activation tips off an all-too familiar character of the G.I. Joe universe. Unfortunately for Duke, that person isn’t the only one after him.

The fight is brought right to Duke’s forefront. Behind the bullets are General Hawk’s hand picked fighters on their search and “rescue” mission. Things move very fast as the action sets a high bar. Once the bullets stop flying, the final image will have readers buzzing as another legendary character now enters the field. Buckle in for a high-octane chapter!

Williamson puts the pedal to the metal with this latest chapter. The banter between Duke and Clutch plays well to be the “calm before the storm” forthcoming. It’s a great blend of humor and honesty with the recent events. Once the action starts up, the chapter goes into a whole different direction.

The new characters make a huge first impression in-between the bullets flying. Readers get caught up in the excellent action that Williamson slides in building them up under the radar. The conclusion of the fighting takes Duke into uncharted territory. Seeing what Duke is confronted with adds more to the mystery at large. This all ties into the latest character introduction on the final page. Where the story heads from here is anyone’s guess but the writing locks you in to leave all those cares behind until the next chapter.

Reilly and Bellaire dip into a few character moments before revving the action up. The initial encounter with Clutch fills the panels with the sense of their deep friendship. The panels speak volumes until the bullets start flying. This comes readers way via a full page panel introduction of a fan-favorite. From here, the pages are flooded with intense imagery reflecting the stakes at hand.

With an A.I.D. (Artificial intelligence Destruction) Protocol in effect, the streets of San Francisco are caught in the crossfire of Pyre and dangerous Morrow Mechs. As the threat has leveled up, so has Bibi and her mechs. They have now executed the Squad formation into a powerful Mech! This is much needed as an A.I.D. Mech is poised to strike!

The battle steps up a few levels. Bibi is pushing her team to find a way to win. The intensity heightens as the two metal gladiators try to take the other one out. Just when readers think Bibi is on the cusp of winning, she’s distracted by a fallen civilian. The A.I.D. Mech delivers a blow that forces the team suit to fall. Bibi retaliates by electrocuting the Mech. This move has taken a toll on Bibi. She lies unconscious in the street. Where her story leads next will be a return of sorts that fans will be amped to check out.

The actions of Morrow haven’t gone unnoticed by the Mayor of San Francisco. A decision is made that impacts everyone in the city. The choice draws a reaction of Morrow’s Jimmi Moss. What happens next pushes the city to an unforeseen place. Can Bibi recover in time to save the city again or is it too late? Readers will have much to process as the final page sets up events for San Francisco’s last stand.

Flores gives readers a solid balance of action while setting up the major players for a face-off with epic repercussions. Bibi’s attempt to win pushes her to her limits. Its’ fallout leads to a much welcomed conversation. Fans will be very excited to see someone’s return in this segment. The writing showcases Bibi’s struggle with self-doubt and motivation to keep going.

The sub-plots with Pyre and Moss give enough of a set-up that once the Mayor’s action takes place, it sends the story into a strong path of possibilities. Readers will see this especially with Moss. There will no turning back from his actions. It’s very intriguing to see where his direction goes from here. Fans have much to look forward to for the Pyre story finale.

Carlomagno and Iacano construct a great opening fight pages right out of the gate. The two page spread is an easy win for readers with the intensity of the battle. This is balance with Bibi’s road to recovery and the conversation she has. The emotional impact is big with its’ fallout. The key moments where the players are put in position have gifted big panels. This all build towards the final full page image setting events in motion for the big face-off coming!

This issue is staged as an introduction into all the Ghost Machine titles. The opening page is a statement defining what this company is all about. This is perfect for new readers to fully grasp what will make this imprint stand out from others.

From here, the book heads back into the world of GEIGER (by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank). As a family sits around a campfire, a man is telling the story of a man whose contact with a nuclear blast has changed him forever. In this same time period, Tariq Geiger is facing off against a group of strangers. One makes an offer that stops him cold in his tracks. Geiger is toyed with the idea of becoming fully human again.

During the ordeal, others are mentioned as possible adversaries to the radioactive anti-hero. That person is REDCOAT (by Johns and Bryan Hitch). Simon Pure narrates his tale of fighting for the British in the Revolutionary War. After he is shot in the head, his journey begins as an immortal.

The journey ties into the Unknown War taking place inside the shared universe of the Unnamed Universe. Readers are gifted a timeline to follow events as many moving parts comprise an ever-winding tale that is certain to grab readers attention.

The next phase of Ghost Machine is ROOK: EXODUS by Johns and Jason Fabok. Readers witness a fascinating new world where Humans with unique helmets of power affect the animals species they are patterned after. One such human known as Rook has control over certain aviary creatures. His journey has him on the trail of the mysterious Direwolf. How will this tie into the “War Of Wardens”? Readers look to receive that answer in April.

Readers next stop is the all-ages line of FAMILY ODYSSEYS. Peter Tomasi and Francis Manupal are the creative team behind THE ROCKETFELLERS. A family from the future has been sent into witness relocation. Where better to send a family of the future than the past? Their adventures into normalcy look to entertain while their future’s past catches up with them.

Set in the same all-ages line is HORNSBY & HALO (by Tomasi and Peter Snejbjerg). What happens when Angel and Devil families swap children? That’s what readers find out with the stories of Rose Hornsby and Zack Halo. Warwick, New York will never be the same as the young leads explore their lives while outside forces have a vested interest.

Last but not least is HYDE STREET. The horror-led line features the works of Johns and Ivan Reis. In Dallas, Georgia, a man is being unruly towards a young boy. After the encounter, the boy appears to put something mischievous into work. This is presented after a vintage Hyde Street Amusement pages by JOHNS, REIS,• DANNY MIKI & LAMONT MAGEE.

Mixed in the middle is “Devour” (by MAYTAL ZCHUT & Reis). A woman’s dream of transforming her body appears to become a nightmare with an item called “Devour”. Once the final image hits here, readers will have no questions concerning the chilling tales created via Comics’ next big thing.

Right from the start, the one-shot makes every story VERY reader friendly. Keeping stories to the bare minimum presses creators to simplify introductions. This is a great formula as each story has enough to tease where things go after here. Plus, the addition of character bios (ala DC’s “Who’s Who”) is so invaluable to make the connections of “Characters First”.

This really hits its’ mark with the Unnamed Universe characters as Geiger and Redcoat have been featured more than most others. As the prelude for Geiger’s new direction leads, Johns balances Geiger’s panel time while building up Redcoat. It leads to a solid open-ended conclusion for the regular series to start in April.

ROOK: EXODUS, looks to be the wild-card of the current slate of books. Combining sci-fi fantasy with a looming mystery, Fabok’s art depicts a landscape of endless possibilities. This seems like an adventure that isn’t going to be like anything else out on the market.

The FAMILY ODYSSEYS line makes an excellent debut as well. The ROCKETFELLERS has a unique concept behind it with Tomasi’s blending in the traditional family dynamic with catching drama. Manupal’s art shines bringing in great action moments. This is led in with a full page introduction that kicks things off for readers of their new favorite family.

HORNSBY and HALO lures fans in with a deceptive tale. Tomasi’s set up brings a tale wrapped with divine intervention. Paired with Snejbjerg’s art, the story of Rose and Zach has much more than meets the eye going on.

The horror feel of HYDE STREET & its’ related books blend vintage themes with excellent artwork. The classic “amusements” by Johns and Magee along with Devour by Zchut have such a throwback feel that readers can’t help but become invested in these tales.

Reis builds up the presence of Mr. X-Ray by leading the unlucky soul through the town till the final moments. The closing panel fits perfectly in not only introducing the readers to this story and the terror forthcoming.

With the events of Transformers #2 spiraling into Duke #1, it was only a matter of time until COBRA and their charismatic leader showed their evil heads into the picture.

Under the fall of snow, a man walks into a bar. As the line might sound familiar, this scenario is anything but. At “No Man’s Land” rest stop/bar, a stranger walks in demanding a vehicle. A patron steps up and doesn’t respect the request. After brushing the stranger off, the patron walks outside. He is followed and informed his vehicle will work just fine. An altercation is alluded to with frightening imagery.

The bartender walks out to catch up with the patron. The following moments are filled with terror and shock. All that’s left is the patron’s dead body and a snake shaped emblem in the snow, forged in blood.

The story shifts to an enigmatic city. The people seem to be prospering while reptilian creatures roam free. The peace is quickly dashed as there’s an uprising started.

With “Cobra LALALALALALA” yelled as a battle cry, a mob attacks a building housing scientists. Someone screams about surrendering. He is shot dead by a man with an all too familiar face plate mask. The masked man’s words are defiant as he insists the research be protected at all costs.

As the fight rages on, another scientist doesn’t realize the explosive in their hands. The building explodes and the masked man is severely burnt. This begins a descent into evil and treachery with secrets revealed. Readers better brace for impact because there is a MONSTEROUS one right before the final act sends the masked man onto another course of plans of world conquering. Consider yourself warned now. You don’t want to miss this!

With a haunting feel dominating these pages, Williamson wastes no time in bringing the legendary villain’s story to life. The opening act keeps readers guessing as Commmander is vague with his words but speaks loud with actions. The ruthlessness shown on a few panels becomes the pace setter for the rest of the chapter.

The backstory gives a different look at Commander’s beginnings. Being a scientist defending his research, Williamson write him almost sympathetically. The key word there is almost. As the explosion fallout reveals more, the use of smoke and mirrors with Commander’s story perfectly sets up readers for BIG reveals later. The chapter’s hold on the audience never lets up and leaves them with an interesting final moment before ending a solid opening salvo.

Milana and Leoni never shy away from the cunning and devious side of Commander. The opening moment where the patron is killed is never shown. The panels paint enough of a picture (along with Wooten’s lettering) to leave readers a lasting impression of how things are going to go moving forward.

The flashback moments never tips their hand until after the explosion. The fallout is filled with unapologetic panels showing the consequences of Commander’s actions. There’s a fair share of big panels (including a face-off with another known Cobra character) but a two page spread will steal the show. Readers will be buzzing about this incredible image as the story here will have BIG ramifications. The closing act teases a few events while never letting readers question Commander’s drive and evil. This is definitively not a story of redemption, but unrelenting drive. Excellent work with the storytelling in this chapter.

Evil without a face. Through the superb writing of Williamson readers see the early scheming and debauchery of an iconic villain. The stellar imagery of Milana, Leoni and Wooten add a touch of terror within the unhinged drive of a person with bad intentions. This is going to be a story you simply can’t escape.

The setting is New York in 1956. A man stands outside a run-down building. The story shifts to 1947. A narrator brings up conversations from “Dorian Emmaus: A celebration”. The previous run-down building is full of life and song. The crowd gathering outside exudes anticipation. A man in all yellow cuts across the street into the club. He seems focused on his task to play in a jam session. He will need to be.

As the man gets on stage to play, Dorian arises from his chair. The stranger can’t hang with the band on stage. He quickly leaves. Only the best can take the spotlight. Dorian focuses and begins to create. The band takes notice and sing their praises.

This is a far cry from 1953. Dorian is the man outside looking in. With the conversations from the article filling the pages, Dorian’s life has been anything but perfect.

Readers get taken on a journey through the rise and fall of a promising musician. Dorian’s path is plagued with tragedy and distractions. Now at a new phase of his life, can he make a comeback? The answer comes to fruition as the years pass by. Once the final page hits, there is no doubt a legacy has been left as timeless as the music is.

The writing reflects a grittier story fitting for New York City. Dorian is a multi-layered character. At first glance, his journey starts out with optimism and a love for music. It takes many turns in the course of years since that moment. The testimonials form the article give a fresh perspective as Dorian’s life hits peaks and lows. The closing act gives a bittersweet ending to Dorian’s story. It provides a fitting end to a compelling tale.

Perez constructs an intimidating feel to New York right from the start. The sequence of the jam session sets a loud tempo for where things start in Dorian’s journey. The testimonial panels stand out for their coloring scheme. They are very basic to reflect the blunt honesty of the events. This builds off the emotional range Dorian displays throughout the story. The closing pages conclude events with a parting image that leaves it to the audience to come to their own conclusion of Dorian’s story.

The chapter opens up with a flashback to Duke in action. The narration eludes to how great of a soldier he is,. The image then shifts to a distraught Duke sitting in an office. The narrator is revealed to be none other than General Hawk! The argument is over the events of Transformers #2.

Duke’s claim of Starscream is being dismissed. Readrs see a retelling of events through Duke’s eyes. However Hawk is not hearing a word of this. Duke is given time off to get his head right which doesn’t go over well.

Six months go by and Duke is still in assurance of what has happened. He is contacted by Dr. Adele Burkhart. Burkhart is housing a meeting of “alien survivors”. Once inside, Burkhart takes Duke into her office and reveals some important research. Burkhart was searching for energy sources not of this world. The research was taken away, much like Duke’s story was dismissed. The stories appear to be leading to one location: M.A.R.S. Industries!

Duke embarks on discovering the truth. Once he starts, he quickly finds out there is more than meets the eye about anything the public knows. The pace ramps up with many invested parties now having Duke on their radars. The question is can he survive long enough to expose the truth. If the final act is any indication, fans better buckle in for non-stop action and excitement! This is going to be a must-have series!

Williamson hits the ground running with setting a strong pace for this issue. the conversation with Hawk and Duke plays into the initial reactions expected when hearing of giant robots. Duke is written as defiant but perceived as paranoid. Once events shift after six months, the issue takes off!

The conversation with Barnhart kickstarts Duke’s pursuit of the truth. At this stage, he becomes entangled in a bigger conspiracy. The feel of deep rooted espionage takes over and allows Duke to do what he does best. The sheer grit he demonstrates is an easy win for readers looking for the action. The closing moments cap off events perfectly sending this initial chapter onto the next.

Reilly and Bellaire grace readers with some of the best action sequences in comics. Right from the start, there is an exceptional two-page spread showcasing Duke’s skills. It’s matched by another great two-page spread showing Starscream’s attack, smiling in the process.

Just when readers think they will slow down, the art ramps up after Duke goes investigating M.A.R.S. The pace never slows and readers can feel the intensity of the panels pour right off the pages. The closing images will have fans amped up for what’s to come. You couldn’t ask for a stronger debut in storytelling.

The story beings at Ritter’s Diner in September of 2023. Former assistant Chief Ben Kern is talking with an old friend about his son Aaron Kern. Aaron is publicly known as the “Accountability Killer”. Aaron is currently out of jail via his confession being deemed illegal. Readers find out what Ben is planning and the burden on his soul will be immense.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Rios returns to work after an encounter with the latest “Accountability Killer” and No/One. His return is cut short when Rios gets a message on his phone. Walking into a car, readers find No/One behind the wheel. The conversation goes from a simple “Thank You” to an interview attempt. Suffice to say, it falls on deaf ears.
