For this entry, the Black Market Narrative/Image Comics Massiveverse mystery nears its’ final stop. Since it’s debut, the “Accountability Killer” case has had fans locked it. With the companion podcast featuring Patton Oswalt and Rachael Leigh Cook taking the story to a whole new level, the question on Massive-verse fans’ lips might soon be answered: Who Is No/One?

October 2023 - Aaron Kern is out of jail. The public knows him as “The Accountability Killer”. Due to a technicality in his confession, Kern is now free. His father, Former assistant Chief Ben Kern, looks to stop his son before another body is killed. In searching for answers, Ben Kern and reporter Julia Paige piece together the identity of the copycat killer of Kern’s M.O.: Bartender Harrison Gill.

Working with the Pittsburgh Police Dept., Kern sets a sting to catch Gill. Gill runs away after stabbing an officer. While leaving the scene, Gill’s mask and a gun are found in his car.

This issue begins with a meeting at the Pittsburgh PD headquarters led by Chief Mixon. There’s a briefing about tracking down Gill. Readers find out he might be hiding in the woods as he has been off the grid for a few weeks. Before adjuring, Detective August Singh mentions about the .38 special and the forensic report now in the possession of the Pittsburgh Ledger.

The report is tied to a police shooting of the past. Thirty Five years ago to be exact. Once readers find out who was involved, the course of the case shifts gears into new territory.

The public outcry differs away from the case at hand. The new information brings out the Weiss Macht Brotherhood, a far-right militant group. They have an axe to grind with the names mentioned in the report.

What follows next is a high-stakes affair where lives are in danger. The thrills don’t falter as the story speeds for the final moments. Once they hit, the story heads back into focus with more secrets poised to be revealed.

Just when you think you have the story figured out, Higgins and Buccellato change the questions. Throwing in a new side plot this late in the tale might not work. However, the pacing allows for the moment to build steam and give more intrigue into Ben Kern. Once thought of as a moral compass, the new plot shows not everything is cut and dry.

His current stat quo changes everything heading into the finale. With the introduction of the new “social group”, they provide some insight to how this story is affecting the people of Pittsburgh to a certain degree. The closing brings events back into focus towards the case. This might have been a small detour but one that gives fans a moment to brace as things speed to a close.

Borges returns to art duties after a small break. The build toward the gun reveal works as it leads to a full page newspaper shot. Readers can easily sense the dramatic shift within the story. The media reaction is presented with great use of panels.

The action panels with the WMB are fast paced and never slow down. The frantic images hit their marks in bringing the danger front and center. The closing moments slow things down to where the story comes back to the original investigation. It’s a serious image to lead readers into the home stretch of this incredible series.

FINAL POINT: 9

The Massive-Verse’s biggest mystery adds more dynamics into an already complex story. Led by the superb writing of Higgins and Buccellato, a character’s image is revealed to be shattered. Through the excellent images of Borges, Englert & Otsmane-Elhaou, fans are treated to a detour in plot before returning into focus for the main course to be served.

For this entry, we are heading back to the Energon Universe! Since its’ arrival in the summer of 2023, Void Rivals has been carving its own path in-between Transformers and the G.I. Joe titles. Now into its’ second arc, the space odyssey looks to continue the momentum into dangerous territory.

Darak and Solila are an unlikely pair. Representing different colonies, their paths have crossed. Since that point, things have been “complicated to say the least. Their escape from Zertonia has now led them into the Wastelands.

Premier Zalilak is none too happy with the pair. He knows what will happen if they succeed in uniting the colonies. He’s willing to unleash a great threat onto them. Zalilak has made the choice to revive Proximus.

The issue opens up with a flashback ten years prior. It reflects Darak’s first venture into the Wastelands. In the present, a plan is reached. Solila has reservations but desperate times call for equal measures. The pair heads into the unknown…

Meanwhile, the deal between Zalilak and Proximus is being struck. Readers quickly find out there is more to this deal than anyone realizes. Once it is struck, the course of action switches gears.

How will Darak and Solila be able to handle the oncoming threat? Their journey leads to many obstacles along the way. Judging by the final pages, there is more vested parties interested in what’s next. The second arc is wasting no time in turning up the drama.

Kirkman starts this new arc shrouding it in mystery. The landscape of the Wastelands turns into its’ own character. The mystique of the land has an impact on Darak that ill only be more telling. The writing of the pair’s conversation continues to be a strength of the series. It’s an extreme odd couple that provides many scenarios for this journey to head into.

The dynamic between Zalilak and Proximus is a show-stealer. Kirkman builds their tense partnership up until a shocking reveal. Readers will be locked into what Proximus does next. it can only lead to no good, which is always a win for the the audience.

De Felici and Delpeche give Proximus a grand entrance. The “agreement” portion of his time plays into his arrogance and self-belief. This is instantaneously switched when his true self is revealed. It’s a shocking moment that adds more once the full page panel shows his final image.

There are some great two-page spreads depicting the Wastelands. It establishes the rough terrain that the pair needs to venture through. The art team gives it a certain look which makes it seem like its’ own character. This ties into the final act. Once the chapter arrives at this point, the final image proves we’re only getting started on the journey for unity.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The second phase of The Energon Universe’s pace setter dives heavy into story in its latest chapter. Kirkman keeps readers on their toes with a pivotal character introduction. The art gives a bold welcome of the new player into the story with solid imagery. Where we go from here is anyone’s guess but you don’t want to miss out.

Last readers saw Duke, he was locked up in the PIT. After his encounter with the Decepticon StarScream, Duke was put on leave from service. In that time, he had become involved with a bigger conspiracy involving M.A.R.S. Industuries. With vital information in his hands from Dr. Adele Burkhart, Duke is evading all comers in an attempt to clean his name.

Luck ran out as he (and Clutch) were brought in by Stalker and Rock N’ Roll. In their holding cell, readers see that they have familiar company. In the next cell is THE BARONESS!

This chapter begins with M.A.R.S. Industries moving operations. A voice is informing someone of the situation at hand. It’s revealed that Major Bludd has been hired to complete loose ends involving Duke.

Meanwhile at the PIT, The Baroness is pleading her case to escape. Duke is caught up in his own thoughts to care. With being ignored with her status, she lashes out. Duke responds by breaking down her file.

Their time to bicker is short lived as Bludd and his forces make a bold attack onto the Pit!

Readers watch as the action is turned all the way up! Can Duke survive this latest obstacle? In between the bullets and explosions, choices are made. None will be bigger than the final page! Brace for a show stopping moment that is sure to leave fans wanting more immediately! It’s another hit chapter!

Williamson continues the fast paced excitement which has become the series trademark. The re-introduction of The Baroness is short and to the point. It’s detailed enough to know she brings an element of deception with her. This comes into play once the action starts.

Speaking of which, the attack by Bludd starts off big with the aerial assault. Once events progress further, the writing showcases Duke’ unrelenting will to win. Even with its’ accelerated pace, the key moments are set up superbly to connect with readers. The closing moments are another sensational twist which hits nothing but home runs. This series continues to get better with every page.

Reilly, Bellaire and Wooton lock readers in to the energetic visuals early. There is an excellent two page spread for Baroness’ origin. The pages are filled with spy imagery and mystery fitting for the character.

The fighting kicks of with another strong two page spread of Bludd and his forces descending onto the Pit. It’s a perfect pace-setter for what follows next. The emotions run high with each following panel. The closing page pulls off a huge surprise leaving readers on the edge of their seats. It’s another huge win for the creative team with this one!

The introduction of the Baroness complicates Duke’s journey in the latest chapter. Williams delivers on big action and drama with fantastic writing. Reilly and the team construct blockbuster imagery fitting of the adrenaline rush that has made this series a staple on New Comic Book Day.

Wit Starscream leading the charge, the Decepticons have made an immediate impact on Earth. From dealing devasting losses to the Autobots and humans alike, the terror is slowly taking over. Luckily, there’s one figure still standing in their way: Optimus Prime.

Prime is leading the wounded Autobots into battle. During an altercation, Prime lost his arm. His replacement is one that sent shockwaves through the fandom. IT’S MEGATRON’S RIGHT ARM!!!!

With Energon becoming sparce, things look bleak. There appears to be a chance to swing momentum back in their favor. A play is made to acquire more power. Will it be enough?

The issue begins with a flashback sequence between Prime and Sparky Whitwicky. Both are recapping their times during war via memories. The conversation showcases the tolls their battles have taken.

Meanwhile, Starscream is back at the Autobots crashed ship. After Skywarp was dismantled by Starscream, the attention shifts to bringing back fallen Decepticons with his being. With more being brought back to workign condition, Starscream’s army looks poised to win.

They head en route to a dam housing a generator. With game-changing power at stake, the Autobots attempt to revive their forces. However, once Starscream and company arrive, the battle starts up again!

What enfolds next is the high level action this series has become known for. It’s non-stop thrills and panels that will blow you away. Once the story shifts into the final moments, fans should expect a BIG surprise in the closing pages! Brace for impact!

Johnson comes out swinging for the fences again with another big issue! The conversation between Sparky and Prime gives readers an insight on the toll fighting has taken on the pair. It also shows Sparky letting his guard down and leaning into trusting Prime. Seeing Starscream’s manipulations of the fellow Decepticons builds a strong moment for when Megatron eventually returns. The lying and trickery adds to the levels he will go to acquire and hold onto power.

Once the battle begins, Johnson showcases his talents of blending the drama with electrifying action. Readers can’t help but become locked and loaded into seeing how Prime and company can survive this round. There is so much emotion behind every attack. Heading into the final moments, the build carries into a strong ending. There is no way readers can’t be on the edge of their seats at the closing page.

That all has to do with the phenomenal full panel introduction of a familiar face. It’s a great exclamation point to the res of the chapter. From the opening sequence, Johnson’s use of panels gives readers a solid comparison to Sparky and Prime’s paths. The action elevates after that with stunning art. Ranging from a half page visual from the dam to Prime striking with his new weapon, there is no shortage of BIG moments. It is literally everything you want from a Transformers book!

Through the creative vision of Daniel Warren Johnson, the world of the Transformers continues to be a must-read series! Strong writing balances the full-throttle action imagery to give fans much to be excited about. This series continues to set a high bar few will reach.

Spiraling from the events of Transformers #2, a familiar face is now on the run. Conrad S. Hauser aka Duke has been framed for murders of Dr. Adele Burkhart and her “alien survivors” group. This all stems from Duke’s investigation into M.A.R.S. Industries.

Before her death, Burkhart gave Duke an item with her research. With this information, the hunter has become the hunted. Duke is looking for somewhere to hide and regroup. His journey has led him to the home of Lance J. Steinberg aka Clutch.

The old friends reunite and not a moment too soon. Duke is injured from his encounter with the “police” (M.A.R.S. military). When they start mending Duke, the information given from Burkhart was activated.

What is on the device? Readers see a map with notable locations on it. One spot stands out in the Midwest of the US. The activation tips off an all-too familiar character of the G.I. Joe universe. Unfortunately for Duke, that person isn’t the only one after him.

The fight is brought right to Duke’s forefront. Behind the bullets are General Hawk’s hand picked fighters on their search and “rescue” mission. Things move very fast as the action sets a high bar. Once the bullets stop flying, the final image will have readers buzzing as another legendary character now enters the field. Buckle in for a high-octane chapter!

Williamson puts the pedal to the metal with this latest chapter. The banter between Duke and Clutch plays well to be the “calm before the storm” forthcoming. It’s a great blend of humor and honesty with the recent events. Once the action starts up, the chapter goes into a whole different direction.

The new characters make a huge first impression in-between the bullets flying. Readers get caught up in the excellent action that Williamson slides in building them up under the radar. The conclusion of the fighting takes Duke into uncharted territory. Seeing what Duke is confronted with adds more to the mystery at large. This all ties into the latest character introduction on the final page. Where the story heads from here is anyone’s guess but the writing locks you in to leave all those cares behind until the next chapter.

Reilly and Bellaire dip into a few character moments before revving the action up. The initial encounter with Clutch fills the panels with the sense of their deep friendship. The panels speak volumes until the bullets start flying. This comes readers way via a full page panel introduction of a fan-favorite. From here, the pages are flooded with intense imagery reflecting the stakes at hand.

Once the battle is over, the art builds up where Duke and Clutch are stationed. The full page shot gives readers a greater sense of what the location is comprised with. It adds more to the final scene impact as the unlikely figure is poised to become a big part in an already impressive series.

The life of G.I. Joe’s franchise leader gets turned to 11 with an electrifying new chapter. Williamson pens a superb balance of action and drama while Reilly, Bellaire and Wooten bring the fight for the truth to the pages! When the smoke clears, readers are left with an issue that they can’t afford to leave the comic shops without.

THE DEAD LUCKY #11 (BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE/IMAGE COMICS)

For this edition, the battle rages on in the streets of San Francisco via The Massive-verse! Comics’ most exciting universe strikes again with Bibiana Lopez-Yang trying to fend off the mechs of Morrow from killing off an old friend turned enemy. As always, Bibi doesn’t need to be good. She just needs to be lucky.

THE DEAD LUCKY #11 by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO AND BECCA CAREY (along with editor Michael Busuttil) showcases Bibi’s latest efforts into stopping Pyre and Morrow before the city is leveled in the process. Let’s take a closer look at where things head now.

With an A.I.D. (Artificial intelligence Destruction) Protocol in effect, the streets of San Francisco are caught in the crossfire of Pyre and dangerous Morrow Mechs. As the threat has leveled up, so has Bibi and her mechs. They have now executed the Squad formation into a powerful Mech! This is much needed as an A.I.D. Mech is poised to strike!

The battle steps up a few levels. Bibi is pushing her team to find a way to win. The intensity heightens as the two metal gladiators try to take the other one out. Just when readers think Bibi is on the cusp of winning, she’s distracted by a fallen civilian. The A.I.D. Mech delivers a blow that forces the team suit to fall. Bibi retaliates by electrocuting the Mech. This move has taken a toll on Bibi. She lies unconscious in the street. Where her story leads next will be a return of sorts that fans will be amped to check out.

The actions of Morrow haven’t gone unnoticed by the Mayor of San Francisco. A decision is made that impacts everyone in the city. The choice draws a reaction of Morrow’s Jimmi Moss. What happens next pushes the city to an unforeseen place. Can Bibi recover in time to save the city again or is it too late? Readers will have much to process as the final page sets up events for San Francisco’s last stand.

Flores gives readers a solid balance of action while setting up the major players for a face-off with epic repercussions. Bibi’s attempt to win pushes her to her limits. Its’ fallout leads to a much welcomed conversation. Fans will be very excited to see someone’s return in this segment. The writing showcases Bibi’s struggle with self-doubt and motivation to keep going.

The sub-plots with Pyre and Moss give enough of a set-up that once the Mayor’s action takes place, it sends the story into a strong path of possibilities. Readers will see this especially with Moss. There will no turning back from his actions. It’s very intriguing to see where his direction goes from here. Fans have much to look forward to for the Pyre story finale.

Carlomagno and Iacano construct a great opening fight pages right out of the gate. The two page spread is an easy win for readers with the intensity of the battle. This is balance with Bibi’s road to recovery and the conversation she has. The emotional impact is big with its’ fallout. The key moments where the players are put in position have gifted big panels. This all build towards the final full page image setting events in motion for the big face-off coming!

The tension runs high as the fate of San Francisco shifts into dangerous territory with The Dead Lucky #11. Flores crafts a strong build for the eventual showdown with an emotional reunion to lift Bibi. Carlomagno, Iacono and Carey set the backdrop of the battlefield with excellent art leading into a showdown for the ages.

This issue is staged as an introduction into all the Ghost Machine titles. The opening page is a statement defining what this company is all about. This is perfect for new readers to fully grasp what will make this imprint stand out from others.

From here, the book heads back into the world of GEIGER (by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank). As a family sits around a campfire, a man is telling the story of a man whose contact with a nuclear blast has changed him forever. In this same time period, Tariq Geiger is facing off against a group of strangers. One makes an offer that stops him cold in his tracks. Geiger is toyed with the idea of becoming fully human again.

The journey ties into the Unknown War taking place inside the shared universe of the Unnamed Universe. Readers are gifted a timeline to follow events as many moving parts comprise an ever-winding tale that is certain to grab readers attention.

The next phase of Ghost Machine is ROOK: EXODUS by Johns and Jason Fabok. Readers witness a fascinating new world where Humans with unique helmets of power affect the animals species they are patterned after. One such human known as Rook has control over certain aviary creatures. His journey has him on the trail of the mysterious Direwolf. How will this tie into the “War Of Wardens”? Readers look to receive that answer in April.

Readers next stop is the all-ages line of FAMILY ODYSSEYS. Peter Tomasi and Francis Manupal are the creative team behind THE ROCKETFELLERS. A family from the future has been sent into witness relocation. Where better to send a family of the future than the past? Their adventures into normalcy look to entertain while their future’s past catches up with them.

Set in the same all-ages line is HORNSBY & HALO (by Tomasi and Peter Snejbjerg). What happens when Angel and Devil families swap children? That’s what readers find out with the stories of Rose Hornsby and Zack Halo. Warwick, New York will never be the same as the young leads explore their lives while outside forces have a vested interest.

Last but not least is HYDE STREET. The horror-led line features the works of Johns and Ivan Reis. In Dallas, Georgia, a man is being unruly towards a young boy. After the encounter, the boy appears to put something mischievous into work. This is presented after a vintage Hyde Street Amusement pages by JOHNS, REIS,• DANNY MIKI & LAMONT MAGEE.

Mixed in the middle is “Devour” (by MAYTAL ZCHUT & Reis). A woman’s dream of transforming her body appears to become a nightmare with an item called “Devour”. Once the final image hits here, readers will have no questions concerning the chilling tales created via Comics’ next big thing.

Right from the start, the one-shot makes every story VERY reader friendly. Keeping stories to the bare minimum presses creators to simplify introductions. This is a great formula as each story has enough to tease where things go after here. Plus, the addition of character bios (ala DC’s “Who’s Who”) is so invaluable to make the connections of “Characters First”.

This really hits its’ mark with the Unnamed Universe characters as Geiger and Redcoat have been featured more than most others. As the prelude for Geiger’s new direction leads, Johns balances Geiger’s panel time while building up Redcoat. It leads to a solid open-ended conclusion for the regular series to start in April.

ROOK: EXODUS, looks to be the wild-card of the current slate of books. Combining sci-fi fantasy with a looming mystery, Fabok’s art depicts a landscape of endless possibilities. This seems like an adventure that isn’t going to be like anything else out on the market.

The FAMILY ODYSSEYS line makes an excellent debut as well. The ROCKETFELLERS has a unique concept behind it with Tomasi’s blending in the traditional family dynamic with catching drama. Manupal’s art shines bringing in great action moments. This is led in with a full page introduction that kicks things off for readers of their new favorite family.

HORNSBY and HALO lures fans in with a deceptive tale. Tomasi’s set up brings a tale wrapped with divine intervention. Paired with Snejbjerg’s art, the story of Rose and Zach has much more than meets the eye going on.

The horror feel of HYDE STREET & its’ related books blend vintage themes with excellent artwork. The classic “amusements” by Johns and Magee along with Devour by Zchut have such a throwback feel that readers can’t help but become invested in these tales.

Reis builds up the presence of Mr. X-Ray by leading the unlucky soul through the town till the final moments. The closing panel fits perfectly in not only introducing the readers to this story and the terror forthcoming.

For this entry, the Energon Universe grows again! With its’ debut in 2023’s Void Rivals, Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics have re-ignited the fandoms of both Transformers and G.I. Joe. Each series following has been diving further into the key players of this shared landscape.

With the events of Transformers #2 spiraling into Duke #1, it was only a matter of time until COBRA and their charismatic leader showed their evil heads into the picture.

Under the fall of snow, a man walks into a bar. As the line might sound familiar, this scenario is anything but. At “No Man’s Land” rest stop/bar, a stranger walks in demanding a vehicle. A patron steps up and doesn’t respect the request. After brushing the stranger off, the patron walks outside. He is followed and informed his vehicle will work just fine. An altercation is alluded to with frightening imagery.

The bartender walks out to catch up with the patron. The following moments are filled with terror and shock. All that’s left is the patron’s dead body and a snake shaped emblem in the snow, forged in blood.

The story shifts to an enigmatic city. The people seem to be prospering while reptilian creatures roam free. The peace is quickly dashed as there’s an uprising started.

With “Cobra LALALALALALA” yelled as a battle cry, a mob attacks a building housing scientists. Someone screams about surrendering. He is shot dead by a man with an all too familiar face plate mask. The masked man’s words are defiant as he insists the research be protected at all costs.

As the fight rages on, another scientist doesn’t realize the explosive in their hands. The building explodes and the masked man is severely burnt. This begins a descent into evil and treachery with secrets revealed. Readers better brace for impact because there is a MONSTEROUS one right before the final act sends the masked man onto another course of plans of world conquering. Consider yourself warned now. You don’t want to miss this!

With a haunting feel dominating these pages, Williamson wastes no time in bringing the legendary villain’s story to life. The opening act keeps readers guessing as Commmander is vague with his words but speaks loud with actions. The ruthlessness shown on a few panels becomes the pace setter for the rest of the chapter.

The backstory gives a different look at Commander’s beginnings. Being a scientist defending his research, Williamson write him almost sympathetically. The key word there is almost. As the explosion fallout reveals more, the use of smoke and mirrors with Commander’s story perfectly sets up readers for BIG reveals later. The chapter’s hold on the audience never lets up and leaves them with an interesting final moment before ending a solid opening salvo.

Milana and Leoni never shy away from the cunning and devious side of Commander. The opening moment where the patron is killed is never shown. The panels paint enough of a picture (along with Wooten’s lettering) to leave readers a lasting impression of how things are going to go moving forward.

The flashback moments never tips their hand until after the explosion. The fallout is filled with unapologetic panels showing the consequences of Commander’s actions. There’s a fair share of big panels (including a face-off with another known Cobra character) but a two page spread will steal the show. Readers will be buzzing about this incredible image as the story here will have BIG ramifications. The closing act teases a few events while never letting readers question Commander’s drive and evil. This is definitively not a story of redemption, but unrelenting drive. Excellent work with the storytelling in this chapter.

Evil without a face. Through the superb writing of Williamson readers see the early scheming and debauchery of an iconic villain. The stellar imagery of Milana, Leoni and Wooten add a touch of terror within the unhinged drive of a person with bad intentions. This is going to be a story you simply can’t escape.

The setting is New York in 1956. A man stands outside a run-down building. The story shifts to 1947. A narrator brings up conversations from “Dorian Emmaus: A celebration”. The previous run-down building is full of life and song. The crowd gathering outside exudes anticipation. A man in all yellow cuts across the street into the club. He seems focused on his task to play in a jam session. He will need to be.

As the man gets on stage to play, Dorian arises from his chair. The stranger can’t hang with the band on stage. He quickly leaves. Only the best can take the spotlight. Dorian focuses and begins to create. The band takes notice and sing their praises.

This is a far cry from 1953. Dorian is the man outside looking in. With the conversations from the article filling the pages, Dorian’s life has been anything but perfect.

Readers get taken on a journey through the rise and fall of a promising musician. Dorian’s path is plagued with tragedy and distractions. Now at a new phase of his life, can he make a comeback? The answer comes to fruition as the years pass by. Once the final page hits, there is no doubt a legacy has been left as timeless as the music is.

The writing reflects a grittier story fitting for New York City. Dorian is a multi-layered character. At first glance, his journey starts out with optimism and a love for music. It takes many turns in the course of years since that moment. The testimonials form the article give a fresh perspective as Dorian’s life hits peaks and lows. The closing act gives a bittersweet ending to Dorian’s story. It provides a fitting end to a compelling tale.

Perez constructs an intimidating feel to New York right from the start. The sequence of the jam session sets a loud tempo for where things start in Dorian’s journey. The testimonial panels stand out for their coloring scheme. They are very basic to reflect the blunt honesty of the events. This builds off the emotional range Dorian displays throughout the story. The closing pages conclude events with a parting image that leaves it to the audience to come to their own conclusion of Dorian’s story.

A big hint was revealed within the pages of Transformers (2023) #2 with one of the most popular members making a huge impact. Now fans find out where things go from here with a solo series they simply cannot miss!

The chapter opens up with a flashback to Duke in action. The narration eludes to how great of a soldier he is,. The image then shifts to a distraught Duke sitting in an office. The narrator is revealed to be none other than General Hawk! The argument is over the events of Transformers #2.

Duke’s claim of Starscream is being dismissed. Readrs see a retelling of events through Duke’s eyes. However Hawk is not hearing a word of this. Duke is given time off to get his head right which doesn’t go over well.

Six months go by and Duke is still in assurance of what has happened. He is contacted by Dr. Adele Burkhart. Burkhart is housing a meeting of “alien survivors”. Once inside, Burkhart takes Duke into her office and reveals some important research. Burkhart was searching for energy sources not of this world. The research was taken away, much like Duke’s story was dismissed. The stories appear to be leading to one location: M.A.R.S. Industries!

Duke embarks on discovering the truth. Once he starts, he quickly finds out there is more than meets the eye about anything the public knows. The pace ramps up with many invested parties now having Duke on their radars. The question is can he survive long enough to expose the truth. If the final act is any indication, fans better buckle in for non-stop action and excitement! This is going to be a must-have series!

Williamson hits the ground running with setting a strong pace for this issue. the conversation with Hawk and Duke plays into the initial reactions expected when hearing of giant robots. Duke is written as defiant but perceived as paranoid. Once events shift after six months, the issue takes off!

The conversation with Barnhart kickstarts Duke’s pursuit of the truth. At this stage, he becomes entangled in a bigger conspiracy. The feel of deep rooted espionage takes over and allows Duke to do what he does best. The sheer grit he demonstrates is an easy win for readers looking for the action. The closing moments cap off events perfectly sending this initial chapter onto the next.

Reilly and Bellaire grace readers with some of the best action sequences in comics. Right from the start, there is an exceptional two-page spread showcasing Duke’s skills. It’s matched by another great two-page spread showing Starscream’s attack, smiling in the process.

Just when readers think they will slow down, the art ramps up after Duke goes investigating M.A.R.S. The pace never slows and readers can feel the intensity of the panels pour right off the pages. The closing images will have fans amped up for what’s to come. You couldn’t ask for a stronger debut in storytelling.

Williamson constructs a magnificent combination of high-stakes drama and thunderous action to welcome back the face of G.I. Joe to comic fans. The story beings at Ritter’s Diner in September of 2023. Former assistant Chief Ben Kern is talking with an old friend about his son Aaron Kern. Aaron is publicly known as the “Accountability Killer”. Aaron is currently out of jail via his confession being deemed illegal. Readers find out what Ben is planning and the burden on his soul will be immense.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Rios returns to work after an encounter with the latest “Accountability Killer” and No/One. His return is cut short when Rios gets a message on his phone. Walking into a car, readers find No/One behind the wheel. The conversation goes from a simple “Thank You” to an interview attempt. Suffice to say, it falls on deaf ears.

Both Ben Kern and No/One’s paths cross later in a confrontation which will have readers on edge. The fallout leads a surprise person of interest to Ben Kern’s door: Julia Paige.

Through the escalating tense climate led by Senator Noah Kemp, time is not on their side. What does this partnership uncover? The final act reveals a truth behind one character that readers won’t see coming. The last image sets the tone for the end game to start on the Massive-verse’s greatest mystery. Get ready!

Higgins and Buccellato center this issue around the actions of Ben Kern. Kern has been the one most personally affected by his son’s recent actions. The writing reflects his guilt and anger. The choice he makes is a bold one. The contrast with No/One stands out as they both want justice but see differing ways of accomplishing it.

The stand-out moment of this issue is the partnership with Julia and Ben. Knowing both no longer have ties to their organizations, the writing reflects their focus on ending this case once and for all. The final act puts their work to the test. Readers see how the set-up provides a thrilling moment leading to a blockbuster break. With only a few issues left, the pacing picks up to take readers to the finish line after this trek.

Fuso steps in for Geraldo Borges for this issue and gives readers a more grounded look for the series. The page keep a steady format of multiple panel pages. The imagery points out the emotional reaction to events. Kern’s facial expressions range from pained to frustrated.

The art also builds a sense of danger when Kern and Non One cross paths. With Kern’s choice on attack, the fallout grants a hostile setting, planting the seeds for a future meeting. The closing act moves events right along showcasing Julia and Ben’s work in action. Fuso ends this chapter on a strong note with a panel that kicks off the beginning of the end of the mystery.

Editor Note: The first Four chapters of this story was first introduced in the pages of Image! anthology series earlier this year. Each chapter story has a different art team with Higgins writing all chapters.

A man named Guy is having an argument with someone on the phone. The conversation is based on a shortage of payment. Guy casually threatens the caller before driving the point home about his payment. He walks inside a building. Little did he know how fast things would change in his favor.

As Guy walks in, he’s greeted by Gregg, Jace and Riley. With business at hand, Guy is chatting with Gregg about the tech in the room. Massive-verse readers catch wind how the weaponry ties back to <001>. With a possible job at hand, Guy gets introduced to a powerful suit codenamed Shift.

By “shifting” to Lockport, Illinois, Guy comes into direct contact with Radiant Black! With his mission in hand, Guy makes a play to fulfil his contract of syphoning radiant power to fuel some charges. Dodging danger, Guy fills the charges and “shifts” away.

Once he returns, Gregg is impressed with his skill and claims he’s taking the tech to Morrow. Guy offers a counter proposal. Honor amongst thieves is tested but the result solidifies a new player has entered the Massive-verse game.

Where things head from here shows the rise of an “entrepreneur” in the land of hired mercenaries. Chapter Three will jump out as a certain character make a cameo that was a great tie-in. It is a creative take bringing in Shift to that storyline.

Readers are also gifted a brand new chapter by Higgins and Di Nicuolo to send Guy onto his next business dealings. It’s a perfect way to conclude events for now, but leaves the door wide open for more Shift when the time (and price) is right.

Higgins builds Guy up as an individual all about the opportunity. The rise to power is one that readers can follow along with ease and delight. Guy’s charisma wins over readers with each dirty deed. Higgins escalates his moves with the first two chapters with a “Year One” type feel.

Chapter Three shows an ingenious scheme that plays into another book in the Massiveverse. The concept is unique and locks readers in with the chase. Chapter Four features Guy at his most “human” level. The conversations with Anja Wronja peeled back a new layer into Guy’s character. This break doesn’t last long as the Guy fans know and love returns for Chapter Five. It perfectly bookends what has been established from the start. The only thing to be unhappy about with this issue is is’ the last one…for now.

As previously mentioned, all chapters had different art teams creating them. Di Nicuolo and Baiamonte bring an energetic style to chapters 1 and 5. Their art mirrors two starting points on Guy’s personal journey into business. Manna, Beyruth and Costa mix in the action with Guy’s strictly business demeanor.

For chapter Three, Borges and Englert delve into the high stakes gamble of the assignment with excellent action panels. Evenhuis and Weijers present the more grounded approach with a laid back style setting up the calm before changing lanes into the final chapter. With the varying art, readers truly sense that they see the different sides of complex character.

Picking up right where they left off, the global special forces unit has their hands full with Cobra. The terrorist group struck fast and personal with their return salvo. Cobra Island is no more. All that is left is a toxic wasteland. This is all in part to Dr. Mindbender’s Mutant Virus Bomb being activated by Serpentor Khan. Anyone caught in the blast has been mutated. When the “survivors” become unruly, Khan makes an example out of one of them. Khan shoots off the head of a mutant, leaving their body for scrapes. Khan proclaims the survivors are going to leave the island and take over Cobra’s home turf of Springfield.

Meanwhile, at Arlington National Cemetery, service are being held for Wade Collins. Collins was killed by Cobra Commander in his escape from Cobra Island. Collins death affects many but arguably none more than Snake-Eyes.

All the while, Cobra Commander addresses the people of Springfield. His message doesn’t go over well with family members asking about their loved ones. Commander pushes the mission statement forward that Cobra will be ready to handle Serpentor’s invasion no matter the cost.

With a looming war brewing, who is waiting in the wings watching? Readers see quickly that there’s more than one invested party watching events unfold. This all falls behind the emotions left in Collins’ death. The final moments of the chapter ties up its’ impact before leaving readers with a visual reflecting the loss.

Hama builds up the Cobra civil war behind the emotional impact of a fallen Joe. Collins’ burial at Arlington delivered on a strong emotional connection with readers. The impact is felt later when Stalker breaks down Collins’ story to other Joes. The flashbacks walk new reader through his story, showcasing how devastating of a loss this is to members of the team.

Cobra’s brewing civil meltdown fuels the other portions of the book. Hama displays Serpentor as insane and blindly thinking his plans will work. Meanwhile, Cobra Commander knows what is coming and his address to the citizens of Springfield mirrors the same message. Overall, the chapter starts building up a foundation for a much bigger fight waiting to happen. This is nothing but a huge win for readers.

Mooneyham and Segala display the grief and sadness of Collins’ death with their visuals at Arlington. The mood is somber and the feeling of deep loss never leaves the panels. Later in the issue, the art makes the flashback panels pop out to show readers on how deep the loss is with Stalker.

The moments with Serpentor spotlights the devastation of the mutant virus bomb. The art depicts the victims as horribly disfigured and Serpentor’s madness relishes in the moment. Cobra Commander’s reactions are hidden behind the mask but his body language conveys the plan to defend Springfield no matter the sacrifice. Another great issue with the artwork for fans to enjoy.

The fallout from a death looms on the hearts and minds of G.I. Joe with action building in the horizon. Stellar writing and visuals welcome back a new phase for the never-ending conflict between G.I. Joe and Cobra. The new series is off to a strong start and here’s no way you should be missing this on New Comic Book Day!

Jack and his loyal dog Pepper are investigating a possible lead in Mackenzie Cheng’s murder. As they’re walking by a riverbank, Jack hears a song. Readers quickly see this is a distraction. A creature emerges from the water and pulls Jack down.

While under water, Jack is trying to fight back. As two figures look to reach for him, Jack goes on the offensive. When he emerges, Jack finds himself in a mysterious place. A person of interest is asking him questions of what he was doing near the water so late. Readers follow along with Jack as he now finds himself in the heart of the Star tribe compound.

Meeting with Coochie Poo, Jack evades and asks questions concerning the tribe’s possible involvement with Cheng’s death. The talk leads Jack into a new direction but its’ not one that he might be ready to handle.

The path to the truth sends Jack into uncharted territory. Will Jack crack the case or is this the start of a bigger conspiracy? The closing act is a mix of emotions as Jack’s search for truth takes him on a path to dealing with his own issues. Once the final image hits the page, readers are served another reminder of why this book stands out on every NCBD.

The writing sets up a unique path for justice concerning Jack. the interaction with the Star Tribe comes off as unpredictable and off-beat as one might expect. Jack’s newfound role as redeeming hero plays out with a solid does of humor and heroics. Jack is flawed (putting it mildly). These elements shine as he progresses on his investigation.

The writing throws in some excellently timed moments that exemplify the awkwardness of Crossjack. Once the latter portion of the issue begins, readers see how Jack deals with his challenges but still tries coping with his past. Even with his set-backs, the writing never looses sight of trying to redeem Jack even if he might never be able to handle that moment.

The art sets a strong tone early. Opening the investigation of the Star Tribe, there is a great full page visual of Jack getting taken into deep water. The panels with Coochie Poo demonstrate the humor and anxiousness of Jack’s heroic plan. However, nothing will prepare readers for the walk home from their camp.

The “mind-bending” sequence of events plays into a more light-hearted feel to the seriousness of Jack’s mission. Readers will need to do a double take followed by a good laugh when the “text messages” start. The emotions start pouring out as Jack gets closer to a solid lead & its’ effect on Inga. The art mirrors the grief and anger involved with the case at hand. This builds towards a closing visual that sums up Jack’s struggles involving what is happening around him. Another great job showcasing the road to redemption isn’t always an easy path to walk.

GEIGER: GROUND ZERO #1 (IMAGE COMICS VIA GHOST MACHINE)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out the latest from a company who made a HUGE splash at NYCC this year! GHOST MACHINE, who’s roster of creators reads like an all-star lineup, is poised for a monster 2024 with a giant sized one-shot kicking off in January.

Luckily for fans, their wait isn’t so bad as one of the most notable Ghost Machine characters returns in a two part story that needs to be on fans’ radars at the shop.

GEIGER: GROUND ZERO #1 by Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, Brad Anderson and Rob Leigh spotlights the powerful force of nature in the Unnamed Universe. What secrets lie beneath the surface of the mysterious figure? Let’s take a deeper dive into this untold story, shall we?

Tariq Geiger is a survivor of a nuclear bombing that has transformed him into a walking weapon. While keeping his family inside a bunker, Geiger was caught outside when the bomb exploded. Unknown how he lived, Geiger has become a figure of legend.

When an overload exposed the bunker to be housing corpses of his family, Geiger unleashed his rage and set off on a loner’s path. Geiger became a surprise caretaker of two children who crossed his path. After that journey came to its’ conclusion, readers knew that the story was only just beginning.

For this story, the time is six months after the bombing began. The military has set up camp at what appears to be an amusement park. A man is monologuing themes of guilt and concern for his wife and what he as done. Readers see that he is Dr. Molotov. Molotov might be the man behind the bombs that destroyed the country.

The unit is in pursuit of Geiger. In exchange for helping, Molotov will be reunited with his wife. Can he succeed in this mission?

The action is mixed with more details on Tariq’s life before the bomb. The flashbacks show a different side to the radioactive drifter that leaves a huge impact with fans. The closing act ramps up the drama before bowing out with a parting visual that raises more questions on the already enigmatic lead protagonist. There’s no way anyone will be able to pass on seeing where things go from here!

One element of Ghost Machine that still rings rue in this issue is the focus on “Characters First”. Johns dives into the compelling drama with Molotov’s guilt for what he caused. The drive to see his wife counters the negative weight he carries, keeping readers locked. in.

However, the biggest moments come via the flashback sequences with Gieger. The heart-breaking tale of life before the bomb will level readers with the emotional pull. The conversations with his family showcases the deep love and drive he has for them. With dealing with his Cancer battle, Johns handles the moments perfectly with the interactions of those that matter most. The love for his family is the main driver for his ultimate choice when the bombs start going off. This all combines for a great read that stands out for the characters first.

Frank’s art features the various emotions of the two lead characters in this story. Molotov’s reactions to the army unit and Geiger vary with a sobering feeling of what he’s caused. Geiger’s time with his family and neighbors range from happiness to patience with a unfriendly resident. The time with the family hit the deepest connection as the art reflects the deep rooted love they possess even with the surrounding factors in play.

Once the story shifts back to present time, Frank (with Anderson’s fantastic coloring) makes the Geiger confrontation jump. The full page panel featuring Geiger at his most dangerous sets a high bar for the following action. This all leads to a stunning closing image which sets the stage for more revelations to follow.

The early days of Ghost Machine’s radioactive powerhouse comes to light with a strong debut chapter into his past. Johns drives home superb character writing while Frank, Anderson and Leigh elevate the words with magnificent imagery capturing the moments at hand. There’s no way to can’t be caught up in the story unfolding here. Make sure to pick it up on NCBD!

G.I. JOE A REAL AMERICAN HERO #301 (IMAGE COMICS VIA SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out the grand return of a legendary comic. Throughout the course of history, the G.I. Joe franchise has been one of the most popular in pop culture. From live action movies to the classic animated series to unforgettable toys, the brand has made its’ mark with fans for decades. One of the biggest win has been its’ comic book runs.

Since the 1940’s, there has been a connection between G.I. Joe and comics. However, if you talk to most comic fans these days, their first real memories were based in the 1980’s with the run via Marvel Comics.

With an impressive 155 issue run under the voice of Larry Hama, the series left a lasting footprint with fans. The rights had moved to a few different publishers since the series wrapped at Marvel in 1994. Last readers saw, issue #300 hit shelves in November 2022.

Fast forward to the summer of 2023 and little did fans know that spinning out of Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics’ VOID RIVALS would be the birth of the Energon Universe! The new landscape would be the home for both G.I. Joe and Transformers! With fans buzzing about what is coming, Skybound is bringing back the flagship book in a monster way with the voice of G.I. Joe leading the way once again!

The issue opens up with a fantastic “who’s Who” recap of the history of G.I. Joe. Readers get a quick glimpse into G.I. Joe and Cobra and some of the key players involved. (Editor note: This is brilliant and I wish more companies did this with series)!

The main story begins with Duke and Wild Bill flying over Cobra Island. With a damaged plane, they’re trying to salvage the flight, not to mention the precious cargo of a Joe team on-board.

On the ground level, Dr. Mind-bender and Serpentor Khan (COBRA notables) have activated the Mutant Virus Bomb. Preferring this method to defeat the Joes instead of surrender, time is now a factor for the good guys. Outside of Mind-bender’s lair is another Joe squad led by Snake-eyes and Scarlett ready to go.

With the bomb activated, who will survive? The tension races as Cutter tries evacuating the team on the ground. With one note-worthy figure on-board the ship escaping, an event happens proving how dangerous and deadly this conflict is between GI Joe and Cobra.

Once the smoke clears, readers see how this series is a far cry from the cartoons and toys. THIS is vintage GI Joe comics. The aftermath will leave a lasting impression that you can’t help but want to make sure you don’t miss another issue of what is going to be another incredible run in the legacy of G.I. Joe stories.

In case anyone is diving in for the first time, Hama picks up right where he’s left off involving his story-telling. There is a reason he is synonymous with this franchise. Hama establishes the high stakes right off the bat and never lets up. His dialogue between Serpentor and Mind-Bender illustrates how unhinged Serpentor is and how far he’s willing to go to win.

On the flip side, no one brings out the voices of the Joes better. Duke and Will Bill’s story keeps escalating until it hits the perfect timing and mark. The escape from the island has its’ drama and one moment sparks a bigger match to explode later in this new series. The resolution of the bomb kickstarts a few avenues for the team to venture down in future issues. This is a great re-introduction issue for older fans and a solid jump-on for new readers wanting to find out about the hype.

Mooneyham adds a gritty style to the Joe imagery for this issue. It gels perfectly with Hama’s dialogue. The intro pages are an easy win with readers. Once they conclude, the art speeds events up quickly to layer the dangers of what Cobra is doing. This all leads to an excellent full page image of the teams trying to escape.

The one major moment of the escape comes across to readers as a huge deal, even if they’re not familiar with everyone involved. Its’ following sequences show a variety of reactions. The panels construct the foundation for a lasting image to close this chapter out with. There is so much to compliment with the art for this return issue.

The return of the long-running fandom doesn’t miss staking its claim as a must-read series. With Hama’s legendary writing backed by Mooneyham’s superb visuals, the saga of G.I. Joe strikes back to win over fans new and old alike. Don’t leave the comic shops without this in your possession!

TRANSFORMERS #2 (IMAGE COMICS VIA SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

The issue kicks off with Optimus Prime talking with Spike Whitwicky. Optimus is admiring the beauty of Earth but accidently steps on a deer. Readers see how the pair spins out of that moment into giving a soft introduction into the other’s past. With the past issue’s events of losing Bumblebee and Jetfire, Optimus needed the moment to regroup and refocus for what is his mission now.

All the while, Starscream is leading the Decepticons into hunting down Energon. They attack a power plant and are preparing to harvest the energy to feast. The surrounding humans are not going down without a fight. They try resisting but are easily disposed of. Reinforcements are informed of the situation. One hero flies his fighter jet right into the crossfire of danger. Waiting in his path is Starscream, ready to end this interference once and for all. Who wins this round?

Readers witness a major player make their debut into the Energon Universe as the action ramps up. Once the encounter ends, an opening shot is taken that will not be the last from a Real American Hero. It appears they might have some back-up coming in this fight. The question lingering when the chapter ends is: will it be enough to save Earth?

Johnson wastes no time catching readers up to speed on what Optimus Prime is all about. The heart-felt conversation with Spike leads to a glimpse at the greater picture involving the conflict between Autobots and Decepticons. Readers bare witness to how Prime is adapting to his new home and fighting the good fight. They also see that he’s not alone in protecting the Earth from the unwelcomed.

The debut of the recognizable character feels like the big event longtime fans want it to be. The action is crisp and moves quickly. There is no wasted set-up. The closing moment of the battle will be one to get fans excited about what is coming down the road without question. The closing act brings the energy back to a normal level as more set-up work is done for an already engaging story.

The art is vintage DWJ. BIG action when it happens. Excellent character moments to invest the readers in-between. The opening moments with Optimus and Spike reflects the caring Optimus has while showing the pain he’s dealing with losing members he considers family. This is capped off with a near full panel shot of Cybertron as Optimus descibes it to the readers.

This is offset by the amazing high-flying action battle between Starscream and THAT character. The panels pop off the page with every motion taken by the combatants. Even when Starscream makes a deadly action, it is answered with a striking line of panels, letting the character have a closing moment to fully announce their debut to the EU. Leaving with a subtle reveal, the art closes the door on this chapter, leaving fans wanting more as soon as they can read it.

THE DEAD LUCKY #10 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, With being one of the pillars of comics’ most exciting universe: The Massive-Verse, fans are talking about the latest adventure of one Bibiana Lopez-Yang. That’s right, we’re heading to San Francisco and checking on its’ protector via Image Comics and Black Market Narrative.

THE DEAD LUCKY #10 by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO AND BECCA CAREY (along with editor Michael Busuttil) continues its’ second story arc with Bibi’s past crashing into her present. Let’s see how things are shaping up now, shall we?

With the new responsibilities working for Morrow, Bibi’s plan of taking down the evil tech company was starting to take off. However, a mission in Jordan has led her into the crosshairs of someone she thought was a memory. Pyre, a member of her armed forces unit, has returned into her life with powers and a new agenda.

After the reunion, Bibi returned home to San Francisco after being gone for three days. She didn’t return alone as Pyre followed her back. Wanting to help her with her mission, Pyre draws attention onto himself in the form of Morrow forces. After an A.I.D. (Artificial intelligence Destruction) Protocol is given, Morrow’s mechs have now been given lethal clearance to end the threat of Pyre and Bibi is caught in the crossfire!

This chapter begins with Korin, a Morrow board member, trying to figure out who authorized the lethal force call. She brings this to the attention of Morrow CEO Jimmi Moss. However, Moss is more concerned about his deteriorating health condition. Moss addresses Korin to handle the problem of the protocol while he goes back to trying to solve his own issues.

Back at the fisherman’s wharf of San Francisco, Bibi and Pyre brace for action as they are now surrounded by mechs ready to fire. Readers see business escalate quickly as the pair fights to survive. Once the smoke clears, there are many questions left in the wake.

Who activated the protocol? What is the public reaction to this battle? How does Morrow respond? Events speed into the spotlight as the attack at the Wharf appears to be the tip off the iceberg. Bibi is now hopping out of the proverbial frying pan into the fire as tensions escalate out of control. Lucky for San Francisco, Bibi isn’t going down without a fight as the final page makes a bold statement before concluding the story for now.

Flores pushes Bibi into uncharted territory with the latest chapter. Seeing the stand-off with the mechs brought high tension as Bibi is trying to keep control before others get hurt. This counters Pyre’s play as he embraces the fight. Their personal history strains the overall mission of stopping Morrow.

Flores spins this into building drama which pays off later in the issue. The mystery behind who initiated the protocol is a nice twist to the overall tale. With a few suspects jumping to mind, readers can make their assumptions while watching the action sequences play out. As always, this series gives readers much to enjoy.

Carlomagno and Iacono features great action throughout the issue. The initial stand-off comes across as fast-paced and unforgiving as a lethal order mission would play out. Bibi and Pyre get moments to show off their abilities ending with a strong panel demonstrating Bibi’s powers to end this round.

The public reactions to recent events carry weight as the anger and frustration bleeds over from the crowd to a board room meeting that plays a big part in connecting with readers. This is a small break until the next round begins. The art team speeds up the frantic pace of the battles without mis-stepping any key moment. This all comes to a head with the closing image which will have fans excited to see what happens next.

The presence of Pyre brings the fight home to San Francisco with another Massive-verse fantastic issue. Flores mixes in big action while quietly laying a foundation for a bigger payoff later with excellent writing. Carlomagno, Iacono and Carey add the finishing touches for a visual experience that will have fans locked in from the opening page. There’s a reason why The Dead Lucky is a New Comic Book Day staple for fans. Don’t miss out!

INVINCIBLE SEASON 2 - Part 1 (AMAZON STUDIOS)

Welcome to a special edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast.

For this entry, we are checking out the long awaited return of a beloved animated series based off a legendary comic series from Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment.

Since debuting in comic book from back in 2003, Invincible by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley made a huge impression with comic readers. The story of Mark Grayson’s coming of age journey into the world of superheroes was an instant smash. Running from 2003 to 2018, the series has left a lasting impression on how modern superhero comics are told.

In March of 2021, the comic transitioned into an animated show on Prime Video. Capturing the essence of the comic with a stellar voice cast led by Steven Yeun in the role of Mark Grayson, the eight episode season has been a huge success with fans, new and old alike.

Season 2 is set to finally premiere on November 3rd on Prime Video. The ODPHpod was granted early screening privileges to Invincible SEASON TWO - PART ONE so here is our SPOILER FREE review!

Season One focused on 18 year old Mark Grayson (Voiced by Steven Yeun) dealing with his developing super powers. Having his father Nolan aka Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) guide him on his superhero path should have been a easy road to becoming a hero, right? That is until Omni-Man’s true intentions start coming into to light. With how season one ends, there is much still out of sync heading into the new season.

Keeping things SPOILER-FREE, part 1 delves into the growth of Mark and the supporting cast around him. The feeling of transition plays heavy through the episodes. Mark is heavily impacted by the near death experience at the hands of his dad in season one. His behavior harkens back to the classic comic trope: “With Great Power comes Great responsibility”. Seeing how power corrupted him (in his opinion), Mark is left with finding his own path to walk and is it the right path in the end?

Even with his strong moments, the true breakout character of these four episodes is Debbie Grayson (voiced by Sandra Oh). The estranged wife of Nolan is dealt picking up the pieces of her life while dealing with a son transitioning into adulthood. Without question, Debbie’s story steals the spotlight away from the super heroics every time she is on screen. Oh captures the pain and disbelief in her character’s voice flawlessly. It is fantastic acting that deserves a great deal of praise when the episodes hit.

Other familiar faces will have noteworthy moments in this initial start. Atom Eve (voiced by Gillian Jacobs) and Robot (Zachary Quinto) both have developing tales that will grab viewer’s attention. This provides a solid balance to the superhero action and bloody fighting which is a trademark for the comic. Trust me, there are plenty of those moments mixed in. Pacing helps to get the story moving in that direction with a superb parting conclusion. Get ready for a fun ride leading Mark and company into new territory.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

The return of Mark Grayson doesn’t miss a beat returning to Prime Video with an excellent start to Season Two. Strong writing mixed with phenomenal voice acting from Yeun, Oh and Jacobs leading an all-star cast makes this season a thrill-ride of emotions that’s just getting started!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Point, the comic book review bog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are diving back into the murder mystery looming over the Massive-Verse! Since its’ debut, the Image Comics/Black Market Narrative series has captured fans attention and left them asking “Who is No One”. With a companion podcast to build on the story, it has made this series more than just a comic. It is a mass media experience.

With the city of Pittsburgh on edge, all bets are off as the legacy of “the Accountability Killer” lives on. Everyone is a suspect. How long before the city explodes into chaos or has it already happened?

NO/ONE #6 by Kyle Higgins, Brian Buccellato, Geraldo Borges, Mark Englert & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou descends the story further into mystery. Let’s take a closer look and piece some clues together, shall we?

After last issue’s events, Aaron Kern is a free man. The person long associated with being the Accountability Killer is released from jail due to an illegal confession. This has sent shockwaves thorough the city. Ben Kern, the former assistant Chief, has been doing his own investigation and his reaction speaks volumes to his son being released.

This issue begins with Ben meeting with Lt. Mark McGarrity about what, if anything, they can do about Aaron’s release. Fearing what his son will do, Ben asks for surveillance but it can’t be granted. Ben storms out and meets with Detectives Singh and Harper, who have been assigned the case. Tensions run high with recent events but its’ quickly overshadowed by a shooting involving one of Pittsburgh police’s own.

The officer involved was Vince Harmon. Harmon was just referenced in the Pittsburgh ledger’s “Who Is No One” podcast of possible “No/One” suspects . With Harmon’s fate currently unknown, there are a few other names mentioned that have become unknowing targets.

Who else is next? Readers see tensions escalate as it’s a race against time to get whoever is behind the killings first before they strike again. How does this factor in with Prop. 87 and Senator Noah Kemp? Can No/One stop the killer before another victim is claimed. Once events kick off the final act of this issue, there is no doubt more questions arise as Pittsburgh braces for a new wave of terror.

Higgins and Buccellato ramp up the tension and uneasiness of the Accountability Killer’s grip with this latest chapter. Ben Kern’s worst nightmare has come true. The writing reflects his overwhelming guilt of his son’s actions. It also shows how determined he is to fix this problem. With the mounting attacks and deaths, the sense of danger and paranoia linger throughout. This plays into a few key players side story of Prop. 87 which is just developing.

The latter have of the book plays into the fallout of Kern’s release as readers see the protagonist enter the fray. The pacing takes readers on a great incline, building events to a breaking point very well. The conflict goes into a new direction which will have readers guessing. The final moments bring readers down easy but leaves more questions to carry to next issue. It’s another example of the high level of writing being brought to the series.

As great as the writing has been, it’s equally matched with Borges’ amazing visuals. The mood and feelings of Pittsburgh’s residents after Kern’s release speak volumes through their expressions. Readers get a fantastic two-page spread showing the shocking first victim of this chapter. It’s an easy win with fans as the stakes are clearly high with what transpired. The use of six panel pages to craft the Prop 87/Senator Kemp related portion gives readers a break in the story to focus in before the action kicks off.

Speaking of the action, Borges and Englert shine a bright spotlight on the big showdown this issue. Mixing in a supporting cast member’s reaction gave the high energy scenes more weight to the situation at hand. This has been a trademark of Borges’s pages through this entire run and it’s such a win for readers. The closing moments ground the chapter into an uncertain spot but leave with a lasting visual until next time.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5 OUT OF 10

The threat of the Accountability Killer tightens their hold on the city of Pittsburgh with another must-have issue. Superb writing and phenomenal art brings the drama and action to a boiling point. The series (and companion podcast) are must-haves on NCBD. No exceptions. If you’re not reading No/One, you are missing out on something special!
