EDENWOOD #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new series that is sure to be talked about by fans. With such hits as Nocterra, Deathstroke, the Tenth and Batman on his resume, the art of Tony Daniel has been winning fans over for quite some time now. However for this series, Daniel is pulling double duty with writing a tale of mystery and supernatural elements.

The story begins in Wiliam’s Bay, Wisconsin . A group of young teens are walking around a lake area. The conversation seems centered around word of the Edenwood, an area that is the last line between NECRONEMA and the United States. Adelai, one of the young teens breaks away from the group looking for someone in the woods.

Once she enters the shrouded area, a mysterious stranger appears. His name is RION. Apparently, Rion is looking for Pip (a missing dog). The couple shares an embrace but their happiness appears to be short-lived. Loud noises fill the sky. The group left behind appears to be rattled, while the happy couple seems oblivious to the event.

It is only when Adelai sees Pip running, the course of events changes. Adelai chases after Pip but disappears. Rion follows and finds Pip’s skeleton. With no sign of anyone in sight, an explosion knocks Rion off his feet. When he stands back up, he is in a completely new environment.

Where has Rion landed? A wounded soldier pleads to Rion for help. As the young man approaches, a trap is revealed. How does he survive? Readers buckle in for a story that escalades quickly with its drama and conflict. Once the final act begins, there are more questions to be had heading into the next chapter. The biggest one is posed with the final image capping off one heck of a debut.

Daniel gives readers a solid introduction into a world filled with excitement and secrets. Rion takes the lead being the unlikely lead for the ever-evolving tale. Daniel doesn’t give him time to process events as he’s literally thrown into conflict in the second act. Readers pick up quickly how the overall danger is building.

With well paced action, the story moves very swiftly. Once the final act begins, the time jump doesn’t hamper where events lead to. The stage is set for more to come and there’s a great deal to process. This chapter is an absolutely engaging starting point to jump on board with.

The art shines on each page. The subtle beginnings of the innocence of youth kicks the issue off. The group of kids don’t seem too phased by events via their mannerisms. However, this changes quickly when the conflict comes right before them. Rion demonstrates a wide range of emotions but the middle point is where he grows. With the traps’ fallout, readers are treated to a stunning near-full page spread of action.

This page moves Rion into a new stat quo which never loses sight of the overall themes. There are quite a few full page panels near the end of the book to elevate the tension, but none bigger than the final image. It’s a great ending spot for this chapter but there is much more building with this series to be excited about.

FINAL GRADE: 9 OUT OF 10

Tony Daniel welcomes readers into a fantastic new world overflowing with fantasy and intrigue. Solid writing and electric artwork brings out the best of a young upstart hero with the best yet to come. This will be one to watch for on New Comic Book Day.

VOID RIVALS #5 (IMAGE COMICS VIA SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are diving back into the Energon Universe with arguably the breakout title of 2023. Since it’s debut, the story of Darak and Solila has been a huge hit with fans. Nearing the completion of its’ first arc, there are many questions to where the unlikely duo heads next. With the addition of Transformers and the upcoming G.I. Joe related books, there is no doubt that the story is just getting started.

VOID RIVALS #5 by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Patricio Delpeche and Rus Wooton raises the stakes as a homecoming might not be so welcome. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening now, shall we?

The issue begins with both Darak and Solila being detained on Zertonia. When Solila thought she was making a deal returning to her home, it turns out there was more double-crossing to be had. Darak is assessing the danger they’re in while Solila is processing what’s next. Readers see the pair try reasoning the situation before Darak is led away for interrogation.

Meanwhile, Solila is visited by a surprise figure: Mistress Vill. Readers quickly find out there is a connection between the two as Solila is reffered to as a “Keeper Of The Light”. This does bother her as she pleads she has no ties to anyone. The conversation concludes with a new possible direction for Solila in light of recent actions.

As for Darak, his imprisonment continues and hope looks bleak. He keeps a good front but the torture wears on him. Darak’s luck might have changed as some help appears in an unlikely place.

How do the pair survive what’s next? Readers see more players enter the game of control as the story progresses. With mounting stakes, the unlikely pair have their destinies in their own hands. What path will they choose? If the final pages are any indications, the secrets of the Sacred Ring are about to explode!

Just when readers think they know the answers, Kirkman switches up the questions. The mystery surrounding Solila drives the main focus of this issue. Returning home, there is a sense of danger and grave consequences after her initial arrival. With the introduction of Mistress Vill, Kirkman constructs an engaging situation for the book’s most enigmatic character.

Equal billing is also shown to Darak’s new direction. The reveals of where he is heading now is an exciting change to the story. With the addition of many new players, the direction of the book can shift gears easily. Both roads look to lead back to a confrontation and this is nothing but win for the readers.

De Felici and Delpeche present the tensious mood between the leading pair with very noteworthy visuals. The opening scene in detainment is a strong moment with the body language reflecting the trouble they are in. The conversation plays out well with the mannerisms being showcased through their masks.

There are some great Transformers influenced pages to break up the story which long time fans of the “Robots In Disguise” will be excited to see. Darak’s story escalades quickly and the art team gives the readers a climbing theme of anxiousness to see where he heads now. The closing moments tie both characters’ new directions together, ending the issue with much to break down.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The universe of Void Rivals grows with more combustible elements thrown in the mix. Kirkman, De Felici and the team present new consequences for Solila’s actions with fantastic writing and art. The series heads into unknown territory and this issue is one you simply can’t afford to miss on New Comic Book Day!

SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #6 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, the throwback superhero saga of Grant Garrison heads into a breaking point with its’ latest chapter via Image Comics. Since its’ debut, the story has introduced a wide variety of characters and given fans a renewed sense of classic superhero storytelling.

The Savage Strength of StarStorm #6 by Drew Craig and Jason Finestone leads Grant and company into an epic showdown. With the fate of the universe on the line, let’s take a closer look and see how things pan out, shall we?

After the Omega Squadron rescued Grant, Jen and Eli, they were informed of an alien Vanguard coming to Earth. Being recruited into the upcomin battle, The resistance secret base was compromised with the heroes escaping and on the run. With the city left in shambles, readers open to see Bolt, Kid Bolt and Paaldin running away from the forces of Evil invading. Luckily for them, they run into more re-inforcements.

All the while, the trio of Grant, Eli and Jen escape with Ren and find out his true origin. Readers get plenty of information as the mystery of Grant starts coming together. Hard choices are forthcoming. Can Grant make the right ones to win the war or protect the people he cares about? As the war rages onward, every decision leads to higher stakes.

There is plenty of action as showdowns long built finally appear. When the smoke clears, the ending of this issue will throw readers for a loop as more secrets are revealed. The future of Grant Garrison looks to change course yet again and that’s nothing but a win for readers.

The ever expanding universe Dew Craig has created grows further with this arc ending chapter. It is always impressive to see how many original characters appear in each issue but this one might be a record breaker. With the feeling of intergalactic war looming, it fits the story perfectly and gives it a serious tone.

The revelations surrounding Grant and his powers also make big impact as he gets thrown tough calls that his inexperience might not be ready for. All of this leads to a closing act which no reader will see coming. It’s paced well with the action not to slip under the radar as one chapter closes and a brand new one looks to begin.

Craig and Firestone add in great two page spreads. When readers think “War”, the art doesn’t falter in presenting that aspect of the story. There’s a great one page spread introducing more characters before all hell breaks loose with the battle of good versus the Draigonian Empire. The complimenting two page full spread is sure to be a hit with fans. The closing moments throws everything in reverse as Grant’s decisions change the course of the book as the chapter ends.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The opening arc for Grant Garrison closes on a solid note with an issue that brings the action. Craig and Finestone construct big action and high drama as the strength of Starstorm might not be enough to carry the weight of the universe in his hands. LOCAL MAN #6 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast.

For this entry, we are heading back to Farmington and the next chapter in Jack Xaver’s redemption story. Since its’ debut, LOCAL MAN has been a tale that blends elements of the founding members debut books of the 1990’s with modern storytelling. After the first arc was finished, the question became “where do we go from here”? Fortunately those questions were quickly answered as the next chapter is finally hitting the LCS this week.

LOCAL MAN #6 by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio grows the legend of CROSSJACK even further. Let’s take a closer look and see how things shape up from here, shall we?

Jack Xaver aka Crossjack is a former member of the super hero Third Gen. After public humiliation with his firing, Jack returns to his hometown with a very unfriendly welcome. His past didn’t take too long to follow him home as a rising body count lead to more skeletons coming out about his past adventures. After the death of Camo Crusader and stopping the serial killer Deliverance, Jack now tries adjusting to life in his new stat quo….again.

This issue kicks off with the residents of Farmington trying to enjoy some delicious goods at Auntie Inga’s baked goods. Much like any small town USA, news travels fast. With Jack’s return, the reaction is mixed. However, everything stops at a drop of a dime as Jack walks in the dinner. Jack meets up with Igna, his only friend who’s not as all that she seems. A private moment is interrupted by Igna’s father but that’s not the most shocking interruption at the dinner.

With a gunshot going off, readers see that the legacy of Camo Crusader isn’t going gently into the quiet night. The mood is tense as Jack needs to face this latest challenge head on. How will public enemy #1 handle the moment and following fallout?

The next phase of the story throws an interesting mystery into Jack’s already complicated life. The town of Farmington has already been rocked by Jack’s past catching up. With the final page, Readers will question what they are seeing as the wait for the next issue begins.

Seeley and Fleecs pick up right where they left off with a great return issue. The complexity of Jack Xaver is one of the best aspects of this story. Jack is not a morally sound character but tries being better when the hero side needs to appear. The dynamic between Igna and Jack is a nice addition to the overall tale. This issue shows that Jack might have one more supporter by the time it’s all said and done but can his conscious carry the weight? The threat this issue plays right into the climate and opinion of public disillusion when dealing with the news. It’s a great take that Jack plays off from with ease. The closing chapter leaves many questions but fans will be very happy they picked up this issue and series.

The art encloses the magic of small-town talk right from the start of the book. The panels showing the various residents gives an idea of the varying opinion of Jack. Thus is capped off with his full page appearance for the issue. There’s also solid action panels when Jack has to switch to “Hero Mode”. This plays right into his reactions to being a hero again. Jack’s world is ever-evolving and the art mirrors the constant swings of how he feels. This leads into the closing moments with a final image that no one will see coming. Strong work as always with how this side of heroism is portrayed.

TRANSFORMERS #1 (IMAGE COMICS VIA SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, the wait is finally over! Ever since the secret was let out in the pages of VOID RIVALS, fans have been eagerly waiting for the “ENERGON UNIVERSE” to kick into high gear! Bringing two of Pop Cultures biggest fandoms together in one universe is always an exciting time. Considering the pair making their re-introduction and it’s not just an event. It’s a new chapter in a historic legacy in comics.

Since its’ debut via Marvel in 1984, TRANSFORMERS has been a staple at the comics shops throughout various publishers. Often paired along with the world of G.I. Joe, their stories have been entertaining fans for decades. Now primed for a HUGE relaunch via Skybound Entertainment (and Image Comics), the quiet build has been trending towards a new series with one of comics’ biggest names behind it.

TRANSFORMERS #1 by DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON (MURDER FALCON, DO A POWERBOMB, BETA RAY BILL), MIKE SPICER AND RUS WOOTEN looks to keep the momentum going as a new chapter is about to be written in the franchise’s history. Let’s not wait any longer and dive in, shall we?

The story begins with imagery reflecting a struggle has happened for two major figures. One is “Sparky” Witwicky. The other is Optimus Prime (longtime leader of the Autobots). Both have seen better days during these panels.

The story shifts back to the present where Sparky’s son Spike find him at a bar. The mood is tense as Spike tries communicating with his dad, who’s not very receptive to the chatter. The name of “Jimmy” is mentioned which sways the dialogue into new areas. Sparky is rescued by a co-worker/designated driver, leaving the talk ended with much disdain.

Spike is picked up by his friend Cindy and her uniquely painted van. The pair heads to the mountains for star-gazing and a break from the Witwicky family drama. Little do the young couple know what is coming ahead.

With a loud rumble, the ground shifts. They fall down a ways. When they get their bearings back, Sokie and Cindyt realize they are not on a mountainside anymore. They are on the backend of a certain spaceship implanted into the actual mountain!

As they start looking around, readers see some familiar faces lying inside. The mood is tense and shocking. Before they can react, someone has crashed the party. They are the key connecting the Energon Universe!

What is their purpose? Did they come alone? It’s at this moment that the creative team turns EVERYTHING up to 11 as the action begins to furiously hit! There are many highs and lows within this sequence of pages. They will not disappoint! Just when readers think they’re a break to catch their breaths, the closing panels set up a terrifying! possibility for their future. There is WAY more that meets the eye with this explosive debut!

Johnson constructs an exciting and driven debut chapter for the next phase of Optimus Prime and company. The opening sequence may start off at a slower pace compared to the remainder of the issue. This allows the Witwicky family tension enough time to start connecting with readers. However, the moment that changes everything is the debut in this series of a certain character fans have seen before.

Once that character hits the page, the flood gates open with more of the fandom’s heavy hitters. Pacing really picks up, taking readers into peaks and valleys. The ending throws a solid curve into what has been nothing but fast moving blockbuster thrills!

With a big battle taking place, the art really pops off the pages. Anytime an Kazuchika Okada rainmaker is used in a comic battle, readers KNOW this is going to be something special! Excellent semi-full page panel featuring this. The dramatic panels reflects the deep emotions felt with the father/son dynamic.

It gives small breaks to the frenetic pace but nothing to overshadow it. Readers want big action and there is no disappointment to be found. It is a Hollywood summer blockbuster brought to life in a new media form. Nothing but win to set the bar for a universe that looks to make a huge impact right out of the gate.

If anyone has any questions on why this book has generated all the hype it has, it only needs a few pages to prove it! Johnson, Spicer and Wooten get right to the point with superb writing and electrifying art as the next chapter of the Transformers fandom makes a bold leap forward that new and old readers won’t be able to get enough of. Absolutely do not miss this on New Comic Book Day!

Since a meteor crashed into his high school, Grant Garrison’s daily life has been “complicated” to say the least. Grant has now acquired powers from an object known as the Sharsrum. Along with his classmates Jen and Eli, the trio have become reluctant super powered beings trying to sort through what is their “new world” now.

There have been allies and enemies making their way across Grant’s path. In their latest escapade, the trio crosses into another dimension where they ran into future versions of themselves. With sound advice and a new weapon at his disposal, Grant leads the group back. However the world they know is no more.

The issue opens up with the city decimated and destroyed. Before the group can process what has happened, they are greeted by the Omega Squadron. The group has been looking for anyone who’s survived and our trio has many questions. With little other options, Grant and company board their plane.

On board, readers witness that there’s vested interest from a few parties that have been watching Grant for some time. Moves are made building towards a confrontation fans have been waiting for. Its’ outcome is surprising as the final page leaves more questions to where things are heading now. There is no doubt, this portion of Grant’s life has only just begun.

One thing that continues to impress with this series is Craig’s continuous growing amount of characters. It is a bit of a juggling act to get everyone panel time, yet the major players have all been given ample to have readers invested in. The downside to this is sometimes, its awkward with introductions (ie: Eli knowing the Omega Squadron without giving a sense of how previously).

The story moves very fast and delivers a great deal of action. Plot points that have lingered for a bit are addressed which gives a great payoff. The ending is great for where things are heading with this arc. It will curious to see what becomes the next phase of Grant’s latest chapter, with such events swirling around him.

Craig also takes full advantage of the canvas with vert detailed two page spreads throughout the issue. The introduction visual of the Omega Squadron makes a huge splash. This is followed up by a great two-page panel of the groups meeting for the first time. Craig also gives the villains their due with a solid shot of one with the other heroes in the background.

The visuals fans will be most talking about will be a massive fight scene what two pages are used to their stretch limits. It adds a sense of danger to what is unfolding. The art never misses for conveying the best of this super hero saga.

The life and times of Grant Garrison head into the unknown as the action swings for the fences with its’ latest chapter. Craig and Finestone bring out the best of the vintage superhero blueprint with solid writing and strong visuals. NOCTERRA #16 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, readers have come to the end of the road (for now?) for one of Image Comics’ most exciting series. Since its’ debut issue, the story of Valentina “Val” Riggs aka Sundog and the battle against eternal darkness has won fans over with fast paced action and high drama. Now with its’ latest arc ready to close, the creative team throws caution against the wind with an unforgettable conclusion to what has been a highly entertaining story arc.

NOCTERRA #16 by Scott Snyder, Tony Daniel, Marcelo Miaolo and Andworld Design brings a definitive finale to the “No Brakes” storyline. Let’s not wait and deep dive into where Val and the Sundog Convey head now, shall we?

With the world in eternal darkness, there is very little hope to be had. However, for the members of the SunDog Convoy, that is all they have. After picking up Augustus McCray (Gus) and his grand-daughter Bailey, also known as Piper on a ferryman run, Val (along with her adopted brother Emory) embark on a journey to find a save haven through the endless night.

Their journey has taken many twists and turns. It has also brought them into the path of Blacktop Bill, a dangerous follower of NOX. With the remaining members of the group arriving at Eos, a place of sunlight, plans do not go as planned. Blacktop Bill shows up and brings a fight with him. Emory decides to make a tough call and tries drawing out NOX in a trap. One of the components is to mentally connect with Bill. Once Emery does this, he quickly finds out that he is vastly outmatched. Bill sees thru Emory’s plan and NOX is now poised to enter the fight.

The story shifts to Thirteen years prior with Emory going to school. Emory addresses the audience about theories. It also is used as the backdrop to his complicated relationship with his birth mother. This quickly becomes a prequel for an event fans of this series has been waiting for. This is the moment the Sun “was killed”.

Fast forwarding to present time, Val and Emory are surrounded by Bill’s forces. When inside Emory’s mind, Bill figured out what the plan was and struck first. With the dark forces surrounding them, all hope looks lost. That is until an unlikely save is made.

Who has entered the standoff against Bill? What of Eos and the fate of the light? With Nox fast approaching, can the convoy make it to another day? Readers brace for impact as the battle is taken up another notch with Humanity’s fate hanging in the balance. There is no stopping to catch a breath.

Once the final act hits, readers are gifted a stunning resolution to what had happened. Letting the final moments sink in with stunning final images caps off a strong farewell for now, not forever.

Snyder leaves little behind as the final showdown between the Convoy and Nox lives up to the hype. Using Emory’s painful memories as a backdrop, the story reflects the hopelessness of the world they live in. With every advance Val and company make, readers sense it’s only temporary. Snyder never lets that stop the convoy members from trying to win.

Blacktop Bill steals this issue with his unrelenting attacks. The showdown with Emory is a satisfying conclusion to a build constructed heavily over the past few issues (and “Nemesis” special). The conclusion sets a fitting tone for where things will lead next time the convoy rolls on.

Daniel and Miaolo deliver on spectacular visuals throughout the issue. Opening with Emory’s past reflections, the emotional details laid out are an easy connect with readers. This carries to the current timeframe of the story. A smashing two-page full panel image of Val’s “back-up” sets the pace for the rest of the issue.

The menacing nature of Blacktop Bill shines through these pages as well. The evil grin never lets up as he takes on all challengers of the Convoy. The showdown with Emory will leave its’ mark with readers. Its’ resolution brings the fast-moving action to a screeching halt. The terror of Nox is split between two page half panels, making for quite the impression. The closing visuals bring a superb close to an action ride that shows no sign of slowing down, even after the last full page panel.

The Convoy’s last stand versus Blacktop Bill and Nox finishes with an epic conclusion that shouldn’t be missed. Snyder’s flawless writing matched with the amazing visuals of Daniel concludes the hopeless fight against darkness for now, until it’s time to hit the road again on New Comic Book Day!

The story begins in 1692. A young girl is tied to a stake, pleading for her life. The mob watching isn’t welcoming the idea. Readers look on as the girl’s pleads fall on deaf ears as the stage is hit on fire.

The story shifts gears to a brighter time with an army of armored animals ready to brace for the fight ahead. They are addressing their queen, who is fully prepared to lead her troops into battle. As she unsheathes her blade, the time period jumps to 1995 where an eight year old girl named Rose is playing with her stuffed animals. Her “quest” leads her to where her mother is handling bills. Rose asks her mother to join in on her “fight” but real-world problems are taking a higher precedent.

As the battle winds up and Rose returns home from school the next day, she’s looking to play again. However, there is nothing giving a happy vibe to Rose’s world on this day. Something happens this go-around that no one is expecting. Rose is transported into her fantasy realm. This trip, things have gone very grim.

What happened to “The Kingdom Of Rosewood”? How does Rose handle this latest threat? The journey just begins as the lines blur between imagination and reality. Even when the story starts taking off, the final pages leave no room for mis-interpretations as the mystery begins to change directions before it starts.

Parker and Sheridan weave quite the engaging tale with this debut issue. The pacing gives enough balance to where Rose’s worlds of reality and fantasy can make their marks while keeping readers guessing. The book kicks into high gear with the actions of one fateful night.

At that point, the writing duo play into the fairytale aspects with the “big bad” slowly making their Prescence felt. One can guess this ties into the beginning moments but (as with every great story), readers will have to wait and see the connection there. The closing moments give a chilling close to what is sure to be a saga like no other.

Quinn and Hill balance the light hearted imagination moments with the dark and brooding panels with ease. The team constructs an imaginative world that conceals the dangers lying ahead. Once the moment where Rose sees her “kingdom” come crashing around her, the art takes a swift change in tone to reflect the growing terrors unfolding.

The prime examples of this are Rose’s drawings. With the use of full page panels, the truth of her world have turned grim and violent. The art builds the heightened fear up and adds more to the shocking final page. It’s very creative in set-up and fans will be impressed with what they see.

For this entry, we’re checking out a one-shot from an Image Comics series that has captured the 90’s vibe like no other. If you haven’t been reading Local Man by Tony Fleecs and Tim Seeley, you’re missing out. The story of Jack Xaver has brought back the good, bad and what of that era while modernizing his fall from grace in the present.

The series just wrapped up its’ first arc but before starting the new one, readers are gifted a very special issue. Local Man: Gold by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, and Felipe Sobrerio delivers a fun crossover fitting for this series feature some very familiar faces. Let’s not wait another minute and dive in, shall we?

The life and times of JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK in his post heroic career couldn’t have been more complicated if he tried. After being publicly fired from Third-Gen, Xaver tried returning to normalcy in his hometown of Farmington, Wisconsin, Jack doesn’t receive a hero’s welcome. Xaver also has to deal with the mysterious deaths of The Hodag and Frightside. Being considered the prime suspect, Jack resumes his his old ways. When Xaver starts investigating, he draws attention from Camo Crusader, leader of Third-Gen with an axe to grind. Their confrontation leads to Camo being killed by Jack , who saves Chief Bucholz in the process of clearing his name…for now.

This new chapter begins with Jack just starting his day greeting his parents It’s not just any other day. It’s Mothers Day. Jack has good intentions but like much of his post-hero life, his reputation proceeds him. Before he can get going with his day, Cheif Bucholz has summoned him down to the police station. When Jack arrives there, readers will be shocked to see who’s sitting in a cell: It’s CROSSJACK from the Third-Gen era!

What is going on here? Can Farmington handle TWO Jack Xaver’s?! Readers follow along as the Jack of old hasn’t come alone. There is a collection of classic Image Characters along for this wild adventure. What could possibly bring this eclectic group together? The journey is pure nostalgia mixed into the present time as the danger hits close to home for Jack. The result is a fun episode that fans won’t want to end.

Fleecs and Seeley continue to bring that certain 90’s era storytelling and mesh it into the present day like no one else. Seeing Jack come face to face (literally) to his past made for a very enjoyable tale. Jack’s realization of how he was back then made for a serious point in his continuous growth. The throwback characters stole scenes throughout the story. Seeing the interactions was a nice addition to the story at hand. Even the subtle lines referencing characters like “Billy Kincaid” are great easter eggs. The threat at hand is a solid surprise with its’ resolution. The ending doesn’t miss its mark and preps readers for what lies head as the adventures of Jack Xaver brace for another run.

The art keeps the classic feel of the story going forward. Crossjack continues to look the part of a “Youngblood” member with the art reflecting Liefeld’s style in certain panels. The near full page jail panel makes a prime example of this. Another great homage style is certain images of a classic McFarlane character (but probably not the one you think). The story builds the fighting to close with a two page spread worthy of the early Image crossovers of old. For anyone who wants to get a taste of classic Image in the modern time, this issue is one to check out!

SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #4 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest chapter from a new series at Image Comics that traditional superhero storytelling fans want to keep an eye out for. With now four issues in, the saga of Grant Garrison continues to give fans much to talk about.

The Savage Strength of StarStorm #4 by Drew Craig and Jason Finestone picks up the pieces of last issue’s devastating loss of Grant’s closest ally…maybe? Let’s not wait any longer and dive right in, shall we?

Since he showed up with amnesia on a highway, Grant Garrison’s life has been surrounded with mystery. Trying to adjust to high school has been the least of his concerns. After a meteor crashes in his high school, an object known as the Sharsrum becomes a part of Grant. It awakens something inside of him. Grant is learning on the fly as he’s developed powers but the world (and universe) isn’t waiting for him to learn.

Mysterious forces have a vested interst in Grant. One in particular is Princess Z’Shan Draigo. She sends the Tiger Clan after Grant to retrieve the Sharsrum. In the process of conflict, Jen (Grant’s ally and fellow survivor of the meteor) is shot and killed by the Tiger Clan after Grant can’t surrender the Sharsrum. They leave with a stern warning to give them the weapon or more people will die.

This issue opens up with Draigo being debriefed about the Tiger Clan’s run-in with Starstorm. She is none too happy that they returned empty-handed. They explain the first run was a test to see what they were facing. However, Draxus isn’t as patient and steps in to lead the next challenge

Meanwhile on Earth, Grant holds Jen’s lifeless body buy something changes instantly. Jen becomes flying as an energy-fire being. When the pair finally hits the ground to assess, they find out that Eli (Grant’s friend/Jen’s half brother) has changed into a massive figure.

With the police now on the scene, Grant unlocks a doorway to somewhere no one is expecting! Where do they go now? Readers see that the trio crosses into a place where no one can expect. Plus, there are some familiar faces involved in sending the group onward for the next challenge. After seeing the last page, readers will wonder if the words of warning worked or were they all just wasted air?

Craig moves things along very rapidly with the story unfolding in this installment. Jen’s “resurrection” plays well into the overall picture as there are a LOT of players involved in the Sharsrum hunt. The explanation of powers is still an area that might throw some readers off but more and more, the meteor that hit will more than likely become the catalyst for how there’s an influx of super-powered beings.

Craig throws in some fun one-liners (even referencing himself) in the mix. It helps off-set the latter half, which sets up Grant’s next big challenge. Like previously stated, this series pays great homage to the Kirby themes of classic storytelling. If that is your thing, this is your book.

Craig also goes heavier than usual on two page spreads this issue. For being such a young series, readers get the sense of a grander universe at hand. Craig needs to be applauded for the amount of characters he’s introduced in the short amount of time.

he Kirby influences are quite noticeable, especially in the latter half of this chapter. The amount of detail sprinkled in for those two page spreads give readers a challenge to find new characters in the backgrounds. The final full page panel gets the book lined up for what should be a turning point in the life of the young hero.

BATTLE CHASERS #12 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest installment from the epic return of one of comic’s most legendary fantasy series. Since its’ return after a LONG hiatus, the Image Comics series hasn’t faltered recapturing the magic that made this book popular in the late 1990’s! Two issues back and the fans have been greeted to a phenomenal run leading into this latest installment.

Battle Chasers #12 by Joe Madureira and LUDO LULLABI continues the saga of Garrison, Red Monika, Gully, Calibretto aka Bretto & Knolan as the world of Gaia falls further into chaos! Let’s take a look at how the latest chapter progresses, shall we?

Last we saw our favorite characters, things were very grim. Garrison and Red Monika have been getting hunted by Mastreo and the Martial Paladins. Gully, Calibretto and Knolan have been under the watch of King Vaneer!

As readers start this issue, Knolan is pleading with the King about Gully being in possession of her father Aramus’s magical gauntlets. the King is none too pleased with this and gives a stern warning to Knolan about loyalty.

Meanwhile, Garrison has gone thru a transformation while facing certain doom from the Master Paladins. He has re-emerged as a blue-skinned figure, seething with energy. Limbo, one of the Paladins, looks ready to strike but is now not dealing with Garrision, but a figure named Wrenneth.

What happens now with Wrenneth in control? The action is taken up few notches as the darker side of Garrison is released. Does Mastreo know what is unleashed now? And what of Red Monika? There is no shortage of excitement coming from this issue as things shift in a new direction for Gaia’s fiercest warriors.

Madureira splits up time between Garrision’s and Gully’s stories more equally this go-around than previously. Garrison’s has a more balanced narrative with mystery and action. It’s caped off with big action and showing a possible threat to what the King has been preparing for.

Gully’s is slow-building into more but has many moving parts attached. With her brother arrested and facing a possible end, Gully is still searching for her own path. The supporting cast there gives more support to the story but has some ways to go which I’m assuming will be heavily feature in the next arc. The issue finishes with a solid build for that story whenever issue #13 hits the shelves.

LULLABI firmly establishes the terrifying potential of Wrenneth during the action panels. The pace is fast and holds nothing back as Wrenneth deals with the Paladins. Right down to the evil smile, the art reflects how much evil is flowing thru Garrison at those moments. the action involving Red Monika doesn’t hit any brakes either.

Fans who want big battles have plenty to enjoy. The Gully portion does more foundation building with Sebastian Nefar pulling the strings. Those panels ultimately lead to a definitive close for the return arc with plenty of ideas to where things head to next.

The first arc back for the legendary fantasy series wraps up one story while setting the stage to an ever bigger tale in the near future. Madureira and Lullabi continue their successful formula of strong writing and artwork to leave no doubt to new and old readers alike that Battle Chasers is back and here to stay!

Dylan’s tenure as the defender of the supernatural hasn’t exactly been an easy road. His estranged dead father’s spirit served as a mentor until Dylan decided to dismiss him. The replacement turned out to be Caleb Hawthorne, the Knight Sun. When Dylan couldn’t defeat Hellbent on his own, he turned over control of his body to Caleb to secure victory. However with that choice, Caleb has decided not to relinquish hold.

Now a literal prisoner in his own body, Dylan is learning the hard way that not every hero has good intentions.

With full possession of Dylan’s body and the power of the Sun Stone, Caleb has summoned the attention of Mourningstar, who has been responsible for most of Dylan’s troubles as Rogue Sun.

This issue kicks off with Caleb facing off with Mourningstar and her minions of creatures. What appears to be a challenge turns into a surprise no one is expecting. Caleb hasn’t come to fight, he’s come with a proposition. It is one readers will not believe when they read it!

Meanwhile, Dylan is meeting with his father and Grandfather in the astral plane in a configured reminder of family life: a cabin in the woods. The trio converse about life as Rogue Suns and how Dylan should move forward. Their journey takes them into a place where Dylan learns about the history of the mantle he once had. Dylan also makes a choice with big ramifications.

What choices are made? Can the heroes survive with the decisions they made? Readers witness how choices are always followed by consequences. Even with these stories going on, the final act drops one f the biggest shocking moments in this series history and that is saying something! Readers - BRACE FOR THE LAST PAGE!

Parrott continues to weave more surprises and twists into Dylan’s life proving that any ideas you have about this series are far from concrete. The opening moments with Caleb and Mourningstar proves to be a solid pace setter for the remaining plots in this issue/story. Caleb has been one character that keeps his true intentions close to the vest but appears to be peeling back some of those layers with his actions. The family “reunion” breaks away from the overall story long enough to give some insight into the Bell’s dynamic while challenging if the powers of Rogue Sun affects the wielder more than anything thinks. Excellent final act to raise the stakes even higher as Dylan and Caleb appear on a much needed collision course.

Abel and Renna continue to be a winning team splitting art duties. Caleb’s body language with Mourningstar speaks volumes without seeing his face. The feel is tense as the enemies could attack at any moment. The family time showcases the strained relationship the Bell/Siegal family have with the pent-up emotions pouring out on the panels. Events move at a quick pace but never loses the readers attention as the escalation grows. It’s perfectly capped off with a final act and mind-blowing parting visual that will leave readers shocked at what’s about to happen next.

The life and times of Dylan Siegal never disappoint as the creative team continues to find ways to lead readers into directions that no one sees coming. Parrott delivers on the drama with exceptional writing. Factor in the one-two punch of Abela and Renna (along with the rest of the team) and Rogue Sun continues to be a must have on New Comic Book day.

Comic’s most exciting universe has returned in a big way since its’ latest crossover event: “Supermassive 2023”. Each regular series has just started brand new arcs and Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka Bibi’s past appears to have found her in an unlikely place.

After the battle for San Francisco concluded, Bibi suffered a massive loss with her ex-boyfriend/ally Eddie sacrificing himself to save her. With Morrow still in control, Bibi elected to take her fight against the corporation in a different direction. She decided to broker a deal with Mr. Jimmi Moss, the head of Morrow to lead Morrow’s special crimes division.

On their latest mission, Bibi is sent on a mission to Jordan to recover an asset. What should be a simple recon assignment turns shockingly personal as Bibi runs into a “Ghost” from her past…literally. A mysterious figure stands in her way. He is known as Pyre, who once was part of her military unit that was killed in the event that gave her the powers of electricity she has.

This issue opens up with Bibi starting at someone who she thought was long dead. Pyre seems unfased by her doubt. Bibi lashes out with an electrical blast which knocks Pyre down. The Dead Lucky squad appears behind her, including Ghost. Pyre lashes back with a blast, escalading the action until both collapse.

Once she comes to, Bibi is imprisoned by Pyre. She is still in denial until Pyre shows an object which will catch readers attention. What is Pyre’s selling point of Truth? This event causes a flashback which gives clarity to the mysterious background of Bibi. The fallout carries Bibi and Pyre into uncharted territory for the mission at hand. Where it all leads to is a final image that proves there is more to this story than readers are ready for!

BREAKDOWN: Readers get some big reveals in the story of Bibi’s past within these pages. Flores builds this moment up by selling Bibi’s shock throughout the first act. The emotions pour out of Bibi with the impact of seeing someone she lost standing right in front of her. It is a strong set-up to the flashback later in the story. It provides a break between the action and drives home how Bibi’s past clashes with her present. Supporting characters get their time but the heart of this issue runs through Bibi’s reactions much to the readers benefit.

Carlomagno and Iacono bring the action to life right from the start, With tensions running high, they display Bibi losing her cool with displays of both her and Pyre’s powers. However, the flashback sequences is what pops off the pages here. The coloring gives those panels a retro feel building to a huge two-page spread that makes a loud statement. With the high-level of excitement looming, the art team shines with featuring the toll it takes on Bibi. With who the public thinks is the “Accountability Killer” is (Aaron Kern) behind bars, someone else has picked up his vision of “hacktivism”. This is leading to a rising body count from a copycat killer and a city closer to the brink of exploding. A figure claiming to be No/One has been watching and looking to see who is behind these attacks. The vigilante isn’t alone in the quest for truth. Multiple people are trying to solve the mystery before things can get possibly worse.

Former Assistant Chief Ben Kern (Aaron’s father) is conducting his own investigation into matters. Detectives Singh and Harper have been assigned the case by have to face a demanding public searching for answers. Pittsburgh Ledger Editor Teddy Barlow and reporter Julia Paige have started a podcast for their search which has lead Julia into danger more than once.

Last issue, Senator Noah Kemp unveiled Prop 87, which would give residents legal rights to “preemptive Immunity” against attacks from No/One essentially.

This issue kicks off with Aaron Kern recanting his original plea of guilty. The Pittsburgh Ledger team is debating on how to approach the story. Julia believes Kern’s change of heart might be in reaction to Prop 87. JC Randle (Head of PL Media) reacts in a different way to the news. Randle wants to steer the focus of the “Who Is No/One” podcast onto possible suspects.

Meanwhile in jail, Aaron Kern meets with his new attorney, Roger Dennehy, about his attempt to become free. After their meeting, Dennehy drives away and pops a tire heading onto a bridge. Once he gets out to check, a visitor has appeared wanting a word with the lawyer. No/One cuffs him and throws him over the bridge to talk! The message is clear: Aaron Kern doesn’t leave jail!

How this interact ripples through the city will capture readers attention as they see the key players respond. Will Aaron Kern walk away? What does Ben Kern think of all this? What does this mean for No/One? Trust me when I say the mystery is anything but over by the time the closing image is seen.

BREAK: Higgins and Buccellato fucus the theme of this issue on the Prop 87 ramifications. Seeing the Press reaction first reflected what the public is processing at the news. It’s a shocking turn of events as Kern has been adamant of his role being the “Accountability Killer”. With the meetings he has later, the writing team sets up there is more to Kern’s agenda than readers have even begun to cypher. No/One’s time in the issue is maxed out perfectly, jumping in where needed. The clsoing act leaves much to be watchful for moving into the next chapter. At the halfway point, there is still much left to go before the answers are unveiled.

Borges and Englert keep panels driven by the expressions to Kern’s play throughout this issue. In the staff room, the debate about coverage highlights the mounting frustration at the bigger picture. No/One’s confrontation with Dennehy is impactful and shows the reader how driven No/One is willing to go. The half page panels jump off the page making these moments stand out. It’s only topped by an action sequence later that is completed with an amazing full page panel. The art always shines in this book and maintains the grim overtones of the story.

The saga of the “Accountability Killer” takes a surprising twist in the pages of Image Comics and Black Market Narrative’s hit series. Higgins, Buccellato, Borges and the team showcase the cause and effect of a defining moment in the series with strong writing and incredible art. HILL introduces Roger Dalton to the world and welcomes everyone to tag along with the start of an unlikely hero’s journey. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening here, shall we?

The story begins in a dentist office. Roger Dalton is working on someone’s teeth. The narration describes him as a loser who’s never had a big win. While working on his patient, Dalton looks out the window and catches a sight he doesn’t want to see. His Father and brother are setting up shop across the street with their 13th business location. Roger is not handling the news well while he’s on the phone with his ex-wife.

As he’s having the conversation, Roger is oblivious to a few things. The TV is broadcasting about an evacuation downtown. There’s a patient that is sitting there waiting for Roger to work. Right as he is ready to begin his work, the office starts shaking. Bursting thru the room is Cirrus, a powerful superhero.

Cirrus is squaring of with WYRM, a magical sorcerer. During the fight in the office, Wyrm drops a mysterious object. Roger picks it up and activates it! What happens next changes the course of not only this ordinary nobody but the fabled superhero trying to save the day!

What happens with great power in irresponsible hands? That becomes the question surrounding this series as Roger is no longer a nobody with the fate of the world now in his hands. Can he defeat Wyrm? Is he ready for what’s next? The final image leaves no doubt that this story is far from being your average superhero tale.

Breakdown: Stegman and Porter set a course of unlikely circumstance with the base of this story. Dalton is far from a worthy candidate to become a hero. His persona is driven by jealousy and failure. Even in what appears to be his greatest moment, it happens by sheer luck. The irony of his luck is uncanny and will win readers over as his story progresses. The pairing of Dalton and Cirrus meshes well as polar opposites fighting for the same cause but gives this issue a solid balance of light-hearted jokes in between the action. There’s a lot to enjoy of this debut.

Cannon and Spicer bring to life the absurdity of Dalton’s actions ranging from his jealously of his dad and brother to his cluelessness of his patient. Each panel comes across with a great sense of levity before the heroics begin. That portion starts with a big two page spread instantly bringing the bold world of Cirrus to readers. Seeing Dalton’s facial reactions after becoming a surprise hero added a grounded connection to the overall story. This all paved the way for the closing act which lets readers know Dalton’s life as he knew it will never be “normal” again.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

Will great power wield great responsiblity? That is the question posed by Stegman, Porter, Cannon and the team with this highly engaging tale. The pairing of Dalton and Cirrus proves for a great combo of heroics and humor that should be a hit with readers for New Comic Book Day!

VOID RIVALS #3 (IMAGE COMICS via SKYBOUND ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, we’re diving back into the Energon Universe within the pages of Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment’s latest hit! Ever since it’s debut, VOID RIVALS by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo De Felici, Matheus Lopes and Rus Wooton has many fans watching its every move in anticipation for the new Transformers and G.I.Joe related properties coming. Few books in recent memory have generated such an immediate impact than what has been happening here.

With two strong issues setting the pace and dropping surprise after surprise, Issue #3 is set to hit local comic shops. Let’s take a closer look at where the latest chapter takes readers now, shall we?

Darak (an Agorrian) and Solila (A Zertinian) have crossed each other’s path on an unknown planet. Their alien races have been bitter enemies for years. Survival has forced them to become uneasy allies. The pair has also crossed paths with Jetfire (a Cybertronian) which delighted fans when the reveal became public.

After making a last ditch attempt to fix a ship to fly away, the pair makes an escape from the planet with secrets discovered to tell. Readers found out the backstory to the warring aliens and now know the bitter enemies must find a way to come together before they are all doomed. All roads point back to the Sacred Ring. With a final attempt, luck appears to be on their side. However, Darak and Solila’s escape leads to a bigger problem. While in space, they are hijacked by figures Transformer fans know: The SKUXXOID!

This chapter begins with the pair fighting a Skuxxoid. The action is fast paced with the pair on their heels. Dark is hit with a shot in the skirmish. Dark tried saying “Save Yourself” but Solila ignores the request. In a creative use of her weapon, she takes down Skuxxoid long enough to buy time for Darak and her to escape. Skuxxoid opts not to Perdue but rather inspect the ship he acquired.

The unlikely duo make their way through the gigantic ship with danger lurking all around. How will they figure out a way home now? What obstacles lay in their path? Readers quickly find out that there is no easy way home as the pair have to make some questionable calls on the road to return. Just when readers think they have an idea where the story is going, there’s a few twists along the way that will keep them guessing until the next chapter drops.

Kirkman keeps things interesting with the events of this issue. At its’ core, the story still is anchored around the born enemies as Dakar and Solila carry the uneasiness of their alliance. Forcing them to work together against Skuxxoid kicked things off with Solila slowly revealing her true nature. By far and away, she is the breakout character of this series. Darak (much like the readers) are slowly picking up there is more to her saga than she is letting on. The action sequences are well-timed as they push the pair to work together, breaking up Darak’s question.

The Skuxxoid resolution is a great twist and one readers shouldn’t see coming. The final act is compelling as the next phase is crucial of how it’s handled. The final moment solidifies that the true nature of this book has only just begun and that’s a massive win for readers.

De Felici and Lopes fuse the action with the drama nicely for this issue. The images of Skuxxoid fighting off the pair set a strong tone early. This is topped by their first obstacle they come across on the escape. The (near) full page panel pops off the page and heighten the events of the high stakes at hand. The art team also utilizes the body language of the pair to exemplify the struggles they’ve had returning home. The prime example is the final act. The panels build to a striking image to close events, connecting with a final image to throw everything we know thus far away.

The Energon Universe’s odd couple dives further into danger with another excellent chapter. Kirkman, De Felici and the team waste no time building the tension and turmoil to a show-stopping conclusion. Make plans to pick this issue up as the story hasn’t begun to even hit its’ next level yet!

For this entry, we are returning to the land of Kiros with one of Image Comics’ best series. BLACK CLOAK by Kelly Thompson, Meredith McClaren and Becca Carey has been an incredible journey with its’ murder mystery within the fantasy realm. Each issue has led readers into a web of mistrust and power struggles that have tested two of Kiros’ best in law-enforcement. With issue #6 marking the first arc conclusion, fans are anxious to see what secrets get revealed now. Let’s not wait any longer and see where the case leads us now, shall we?

Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the royal family of Kiros has been found dead in a questionable area of the city. Phaedra Essex and Pax are the two Black Cloaks (Kiros Law Enforcement) assigned to the case. This hits especially close to home with Phaedra as she was linked to Freyal at one point. With Freyal’s death, tension has mounted to a fever pitch with Kiros’ residents. The public wants answers. Vested parties have interest.

With everyone from the Queen and family to the Kiros Three (last humans left) watching, the pair of Cloaks haven’t had an easy go-around. The search for answers have put Phaedra especially in the line of danger more than once. With some new information into their case, the pair has crashed a party in the Royal Castle. As they make their way through the party, they stumble across secrets neither were expecting.

This issue begins with Essex and Pax discovering the Taka Pens beneath the Castle. Readers find out quickly that Kiros has a very horrible secret that the family has been covering up. The Taka have been used and abused for their magic in energizing the city. The revelation is frightening as what one goes thru is displayed with no punches pulled. Essex and Pax can not believe what they have witnessed. As they plan on exposing this heinous treatments, they are stopped Lysanthir, one of the queens’ most loyal magicians.

What secrets get exposed, readers will brace themselves as the connection between Freyal’s death and the Taka begins to come clearer. With each page, the threads of mystery unwind. There is a great deal of information to take in which should bring closure to many lingering questions.

That said, the final act brings forth a rollercoaster of emotional payoffs and fast paced action. If you have read this series since day 1 (like I have), the ending will pack a serious inner blow as how events play out. If this is your first time diving in, you are either going to be searching your LCS for copies or waiting for the TPB in the fall. This issue packs everyhting you could want. The closing moments bring forth an interesting perspective heading into its’ next phase. it is a perfect closing….for now…..

BREAKDOWN: Thompson has mastered leading readers into the deep layers of this story. Once this finale gets rolling, their patience is paid off with a tremendous issue. Phaedra and Pax have been protagonists that are easy to cheer for. Their reaction to the Takas is very reflective of how the readers will be. Once that revelation hits, the story shifts into high gear.

Like any mystery, the clues behind Freyal’s death come to light. Thompson paints such a tragic picture and hits on many levels. Never at any point was it treated as open and shut. As more information comes to light, readers can see how impactful these actions were. Thompson doesn’t let up as events shift forward into the Taka situation. The pacing gave each plot point ample time to become enamored in. It is never felt as wasted space or forced time. It is a perfect set-up to lead into the closing moments. For where things go from here is anyone’s guess. In the present, fans will have nothing but praise for this concluding issue and story.

McClaren and Carey present some intense visuals for this closing arc chapter. The Taka scene in the beginning spares no time in bringing the horrors directly to the reader. This is capped off with a full-page panel that drops a big exclamation point on the scene. Once the fallout from this begins, the emotions start pouring out of the panels.

The flashback moments prove to be quite eye-catching as the color scheme used makes them pop off the pages. They don’t lose the key elements of the story that they are telling. Each reaction and mannerism adds more to Thompson’s writing. Readers don’t have much time to recover from all these moments as the story picks up its’ pace going into the closing. The art team demonstrate how quickly things are progressing with the actions. Going into the final pages, McClaren and Carey tie in reactions with the characters to say goodbye, leading to a closing full page panel ushering in the next phase of this amazing story.

Thompson, McClaren and Carey have welcomed readers into an incredible tale filled with fantastic writing and spectacular visuals that builds towards an emotional send-off that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. A reporter named Serena Biggs has been investigating the person behind the mysterious polaroid pictures found in New York City. When the danger of searching brings her in the path of a silent assassin named Sprout, Serena has no idea what she has just walked into. After a “conversation”, Sprout lets Serena (slightly) in on her revenge mission for her grandfather. Now the pair has to prepare for armed gunman walking right to their front door…..

The issue begins with the gunman walking into the hotel Sprout is staying in. They’re pressuring the clerk at the front desk for information. He reveals Sprout rented every room in the hotel. With a full search underway, Sprout and Serena look on as the danger draws closer.

Readers see how Sprout is ready for the attack as the hotel has traps lying all around. Can the pair survive long enough to crack into Sprout’s mission of revenge? If they do, what is the next steps in the plan or has someone bet them to the punch? There’s a lot going on with this issue that is sure to please heading into the next chapter.

BREAKDOWN: Wagner goes all in on displaying how crafty Sprout is with her mission. The plan of going “Home Alone” in the hotel has a great twist. Readers can instantly see how strategic Sprout is without coming across forced. The flashback sequences with her grandfather hit their marks as to why she’s so committed to her mission. Seeing the story play out through Serena’s eyes gives a solid perspective mirroring the readers. Leading into the final act, Wagner displays the quirks between the pair before slamming on the breaks for the final image. There’s a lot to enjoy with this story.

Dabbs and Wilson present a situation where the scenes could misfire for being too cartoonish, but hit the marks with a bullseye. The hotel panels are visually popping off, giving the readers a memorable series of events. The flashback panels continue add another layer to the story with how deeply invested Sprout is for vengeance. The mannerisms between Serena and Sprout pulls back the seriousness of the tale, giving readers a chance to catch a breath before heading into the closing act. Strong final one page panel to end things on a more puzzling note while keeping fans invested heading to the midway issue.

The odd couple pairing of Serena and Sprout are tasked with finding a way to survive with mounting pressure. Wagner’s writing keeps readers glued in, constructing a multi-leveled tale. This is matched panel for panel with exceptional art from Dabbs and Wilson, giving readers much to ponder while figuring out the true mission at hand. This is a book you can’t miss on New Comic Book Day.

SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #3 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest chapter of a throwback style series from Image Comics. Since it’s debut, the Savage Strength of Starstorm has brought out elements of the vintage superhero stories of the past.

With its’ latest chapter (by Drew Craig and Jason Finestone), the series looks to expand further ona growing universe. Let’s take a glimpse of what’s happening in the life of Grant Garrison, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING *** PREVIOUS ISSUE REVIEW

Who is Grant Garrison? That is the question surrounding the mysterious teenager who is found with amnesia. When trying to assume a normal high school life, a meteor crashes into Kirby High School. With only fellow student Jen surviving, Grant becomes tangled up with an object that awakens powers inside of him.

Since then, Grant has tried figuring out what happened. Making matters worse, it appears that there are more elements at play with ZOMBIES lurking. Plus, there’s also vested parties in space looking for what Grant ahs to! Suffice to say, things are never dull in his world.

This chapter opens up with Princess Z’Shan Draigo addressing the Tiger Clan about retrieving the Sharsrum, the object which gives Grant his powers. Meanwhile on Earth, Grant is dealing with a Tyrannosaurs Rex rampaging. After somehow using his powers to transform the dinosaur into frogs, Jen tracks Grant down about what happened to them.

They fly to meet Jen’s half-brother Ian in the hospital, recovering from the injuries of the meteor attack. However the happy reunion is cut short as the Tiger Clan arrives to Earth looking for their bounty.

Is the rookie hero ready for this challenge? Readers see quickly that Grant might have bitten off more than he can chew with this fight. Readers won’t believe the outcome of this skirmish as a message is sent without any uncertainty. The final page leaves much to question as the universe being built here doesn’t stop growing.

BREAKDOWN: This issue was much stronger that the previous one and cleared up some lingering questions. Craig shows no fear in expanding this universe very rapidly. The addition of the Tiger Clan played a bigger role than expected and in a short amount of time, Grant has a steady rogues gallery building.

However, the scenes in the hospital were ones I keyed in on. Hearing the recap thru the conversation streamlined a great deal of the fast moving portions of the series. Once the major conflict happened, readers were all in about Grant fighting back. The closing moments of the battle proved to be a surprise but one that felt like there is way more to that character’s story yet to be told.

The biggest positive to this series is how much the visuals radiate the Kirby style of superheroes. From the initial two-page spread of the Tiger Clan introduction to the two page battle with the T-Rex, Craig showcases he’s having fun with this story. The panels carry a classic feel that most books don’t have these days.

The fight between the Tiger Clan and Grant comes off clean. There are some great full page panels mixed in for a solid dramatic element. Things move at a swift pace with a great stunning ending pieced together. The final moments grow the universe even more but only time will tell how that plays out.

Craig and Finestone layer the foundation of their expanding universe with an engaging issue. The introduction of more rogues proves dangerous through solid writing and strong visuals. This series has such a vintage vibe to it that if you’re into superheroes, this should be on your radar for New Comic Book Day.

For this entry, it is the long awaited return of one of the pillars of comic’s most exciting universe: the Massive-verse! The Image Comics line (via Black Market Narrative) has returned with a vengeance following its’ 2023 “Supermassive” Crossover book. The landmark Radiant Black #25 and Rogue Sun #13 have both resumed to much fan reaction. Now, the last regular series Massive-Verse Book is back at the local comic shops this week!

Returning home for Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka Bibi post military service has not been easy. After being honorably discharged, Bibi is addressing her own mental health issues (PTSD and Survivor’s Guilt) and the event from Afghanistan that killed her platoon along with giving her eletrical based powers.

Bibi was also caught in the middle of a battle between Morrow, a tech corporation looking to control San Francisico and the Salvation Gang, a self-touted “fighters for the people”, but are they really? The battle has been brought to her front door with her parents’ restaurant being lost in the fight.

With things escalating, Bibi forges an uneasy alliance with The Salvation Gang to end things once and for all. However, nothing could have prepared Bibi for losing her ex-boyfriend/ally Eddie, who sacrificed himself to save Bibi from a Morrow weapon.

With the gang in shambles and Morrow getting ready for another round, Bibi cuts a deal with Mr. Jimmi Moss, the head of Morrow. The fighting stops when Bibi joins Morrow as the head of their special crimes division. Now on the inside, Bibi makes plans to end Morrow once and for all.

This issue opens up in Bucharest, Romania. A young girl is being held hostage by a group of human traffickers. Getting ready to extract her from this situation is Bibi and her new Morrow team. Readers might recognizes some members as former Salvation Gang standouts. With time ticking away, Bibi goes into action to make the save!

How does this mission fare? Readers see quickly how Bibi operates on getting the job done. In its’ fallout, San Francisco has changed. Is it better or worse? Where does Bibi fit into plans? And what of her next assignment? Readers had better buckle up for an exhilarating ride as the stakes have been raised to challenge Bibi even further than before!

BREAKDOWN: Flores brings readers back to a very different landscape than when we last saw Bibi. Right from the start, the story wastes no time getting down to business. The tone is tense with every action impactful. Readers immediately sense the danger and how clockwork-like Bibi operates.

The aftermath of the previous arc lingers with Bibi and her emotions reflect that. Readers see that the loss of Eddie still weighs heavy with her motivations post mission. Bibi doesn’t do everything perfect and her interactions with her circle of friends and family demonstrates that exceptionally.

Heading into the final arc, Flores sets up a great cliffhanger ending with an interesting personal set-up. What should be a routine mission turns into something more which fans will clamoring to see more of.

Carlomagno and Iacono deliver a fair balance of action and emotions panels with this return issue. The extraction portion keeps a fast pace, instantly locking in with readers. Seeing how precise Bibi is with her mission was a perfect way to kick things into motion with Morrow.

The emotional changes between Bibi and her supporting cast also jumped out. The art team focuses heavy on the strain of working for Morrow and the guilt of Eddie’s death. It reflects how her character is flawed and not perfect. One sequence that defines this is when Bibi is at the family restaurant Seeing the old picture of her and Eddie, followed by the confession of self guilt made for a noteworthy portion of the issue. Strong final act with a show-stealing final page takes readers into the next chapter in an exhilerating note.
