NO/ONE #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out one of the biggest events/series to debut in 2023. “The Massive-Verse”, the home of comic’s most exciting universe, has been setting an extremely high standard in creativity and storytelling since expanding its’ roster following 2022’s “SuperMassive” crossover. With successful debuts for characters such as Rogue Sun, The Dead Lucky and Inferno Girl Red (to name a few), fans have waiting with heightened anticipation to see how this growing roster would shape up in the new year. With announcements such as “The Catalyst War” coming in RADIANT BLACK & “SuperMassive 2” dropping in May, the buzz around this line has grown to a fever pitch. Before we get to those events, there’s one series/event leading the way that is going to set the pace for those events. How they’re presenting this is such a breath of innovative fresh air that simply can’t be ignored or passed on.

NO/ONE #1 by Kyle Higgins (RADIANT BLACK), Brian Buccellato (Detective Comics), Geraldo Borges & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou welcomes a new character into the ranks of the Massive-verse with an explosive debut that doesn’t stay just in the pages of the comic. The 10 issue maxi-series continues the story via the companion podcast “Who Is No/One” starring Rachael Leigh Cook & Patton Oswalt as the reporters trying to solve the mystery behind the vigilante running around Pittsburgh. This is such an imaginative idea to accompany the comic, but considering what Higgins and company have done with QR codes leading to animated shorts, gatefold issues (see Radiant Black #18) and so forth, it is another reason that the Massive-Verse stands out from the rest on the comic shelves each time out.

The wait is finally over! No/One hits comic shops this week (March 15th)! Let’s see what this Image Comics/Black Market Narrative debut issue is all about, shall we?

NO/ONE #1

The book opens up in the Cultural District of Pittsburgh for an art exhibit. A couple is conversing about the pieces along with referencing murders running rampant through the city. They end the conversation to get some alone time on a rooftop balcony but are interrupted with the discovery of a dead man named Louis Capel with four bullet holes in his chest. Meanwhile standing across the building on a rooftop looking down is the mysterious vigilante No/One.

At the crime scene, Detectives August Singh and Kate Harper are investigating the scene. They are two detectives assigned to the case of Richard Roe aka “The Accountability Killer” and his copycats. The mystery of Roe has been hunting Pittsburgh since his first known video comments in May of 2022. Now nearly a year later, the toll its taken on the detectives is clearly visible to the readers. Singh is venting openly how done he is with everything Roe, this being the allegedly third copycat killing. Singh’s rant in interrupted by Pittsburgh assistant chief Ben Kern, who’s got a vested interest in the case. Kern is handed a note found on the victim. Before he can react, Chief Mixon calls in to have Kern removed from the scene.

Outside the building, a mob of frightened and angry citizens have arrived to find out what has happened. One of which being Pittsburgh Ledger reporter Julia Paige, who’s digging into the case herself. Readers don’t wait long to find a clue of who Assistant Chief Kern has a deeper investment in this case as the mob starts shouting at him about his son.

The following Day, Singh and Harper are talking with Capel’s family concerning the murder. The conversation is very emotionally charged (as expected) but readers find out that Capel was a digital target of No/One previously. However, there is someone watching the events unfold from a distance. Meanwhile, at the Pittsburgh Ledger, Editor Teddy Barlow has made the call to put Julia on a podcast breaking down the Richard Roe case since the public is visiting the main webpage in record numbers.

No/One’s shadow weighs heavy on the public but arguably Ben Kern carries the full baggage. Readers see two very important conversations: One involving his son Michael (who’s battling his own personal demons) at Neomi Kern’s grave. The other is at the Allegheny County Jail to see Aaron Kern, who is also known as Richard Roe, the accountability killer!

What is said during these conversations that pulls Kern into a new direction trying to solve the case? After leaving the jail, an action happens that raises more questions to an already complex case! Readers will not be ready for what transpires there, but just wait for the final few pages. Within those moments, the drama has been turned up anther notch building towards a shattering final image that will leave readers shocked and excited to get the next issue in their hands immediately.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins and Buccellato weave a multi-layered mystery within the initial debut. Richard Roe’s impact has been felt for almost a full calendar year (the timeline of events is featured at the end of the book with a great character index & details about Aaron Kern) and the writing reflects the frustration of the citizens of Pittsburgh while slowly unveiling the man behind the mask. The pacing breaks down the large cast into three focused areas. Singh and Harper’s panel time reflects the citizens with the anger and anxiety Roe’s actions have caused. Paige’s story feels as it will be told thru the eyes of the reader as she sets forth to present the details of the case with a “reasonable voice.”

Their stories take a step back in comparison to the tale of the Kern family. Higgins and Buccellato portray Ben Kern as a conflicted character balancing his fatherly duties to his civic duties as an officer. Kern’s struggles shine with the conversations with his son. Both have a different tempo and distinct endings. It makes for what follows that much more greater. The final set-up of the last pages are exceptionally placed to add a building tension to its’ jaw-dropping conclusion.

Borges wastes no time in bringing the strong reactions of “No/One’s” actions to the readers. There is a full page panel showing Capel’s demise that pulls no punches (including the couples reaction). It’s matched with a fantastic two-page spread with No/One standing over the rooftop watching. Borges captures the strain and wear Roe’s actions have taken on the detectives and the people of Pittsburgh. This comes right to the forefront when Singh & Harper talk with Capel’s family. There is a great action moment sprinkled in the story which is incredible and sets up a great twist but this issues emotional builds are what will have people talking. Borges uses a multi-panel format (7-9) which echos a “Watchmen” feel in bringing Ben Kern’s drama with his sons to the readers. The perfect example is this technique is the final pages of the book which concludes with an exclamation point final image.

FINAL POINT: The latest entry into the Massive-Verse establishes itself as a must-read mystery that simply can not be missed. Higgins, Buccellato, Borges & the team present a city on edge with an enigmatic figure at the center of it’s breaking point. Phenomenal writing and imagery set the stage for not just a book, but an event that comic fans can’t afford to miss and the local comic shops and in podcast form with “Who is No/One.”

STONEHEART #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a debut fantasy series from Image Comics featuring a writer/artist that has been crushing it on fantastic books like Frank Miller’s Pandora, RADIANT PINK and INKBLOT. Stoneheart #1 by EMMA KUBERT introduces readers to the wildly imaginative world of Shayde Whisper, a character that is sure to have fans talking. The mystery behind Whisper and the land of Athea is about to unfold so let’s not delay any longer and check out what’s happening, shall we?

The story opens up with a map of Athea, breaking down the important areas of the land. Excellent way to introduce the new landscape to readers with definitive points of interest to keep eyes on.

From here, The Paladins of the North Estron Kingdom are holding court concerning the fate of a figure who has created a polarizing reaction. The banter is confrontational amongst the council known as the Council Of Might. The reactions are very different in deciding on the young woman’s punishment. Some say help her, some say exile her from the kingdom. This ends with a decision from Chieftain Orphidian, who has heard enough. She summons the accused known as Shayde Whisper to face the council. Whisper is led in via chains to face the group. Readers see there is a voice talking with her and seems to have an influence on what has transpired. In a fit of rage, Whipser (also known as Paladin Stoneheart) breaks free but is subdued quickly. With this latest action, the council makes their decision and exile Stoneheart from the kingdom!

A man walks up and appears to mindwipe her thoughts, resulting in her waking up in a carriage heading towards the Lightspring Canyon of Etrana Kingdom in Athea. Whisper appears to be facing the new place with optimism and excitement. It’s a far cry from the dangerous being the Council thought stood before them. Once arriving in town, Whisper hits the ground running establishing a new life and career. However, as the story unfolds, readers see that Whisper’s past might not be done with her.

What new dangers now lurk in her new hometown? How far can she run from her past? Who is behind the influencing voice. The final act grabs readers along for the ride as Whisper’s new stat quo is established with mystery looming in the shadows and an action that will have big ramifications moving forward.

BREAKDOWN: Kubert is writing and drawing this series, presenting fans with a captivating tale with a lead character’s secret as the driving point. For being a debut issue, Kubert take the time to introduce all the major players with caption boxes, noting their ages as well. This plays into the council’s decision to exile Whisper out of the Estron Kingdom. Readers see the differences of the elders versus the younger members factoring in the choice of punishment. Once the story shifts to the LightSpring Canyon, Kubert spends a solid amount of time to forge the beginning friendship between Whisper and the local Blacksmith which makes the events of the final act much more impactful. Pacing works well to move the story forward without tipping off too much. The conclusion ends things with a unique style cliffhanger but one work to add more questions going to the next issue. It’s an excellent way to have readers interest spiking even more from this debut issue.

The art reflects the mystical backdrop to this story. Great use of the black and white coloring for the Estron Kingdom moments while establishing the voices with the turquoise and red color blocks for the voices. Once the story moves locations and goes to full color, Kubert brings to life a vibrant energy reflecting Whisper’s endless positivity. Her reactions to the events happening made a connection with the readers. The new landscape has a certain charm to it with its’ various residents making it noteworthy. Even with all the world building, there are some excellent action scenes which play into a bigger role heading to the final act. Speaking of that act, things move pretty quickly but Kubert never lets the emotions slide as the events unfold. Readers won’t be disappointed with how things conclude as they’re left with much to ponder with anticipation as this fantasy tale is only beginning to start its’ journey.

FINAL POINT: Is optimism enough to survive on when danger and deception constantly looming? That is the question Stoneheart #1 poses. Readers are greeted to the enigmatic Shayde Whisper with a fantastic mix of intriguing storytelling and imaginative art. Emma Kubert sets the stage for a fantasy tale that shows no sign of missing its mark. Don’t miss your chance picking up this engaging comic at the local comic shop this week.

ROGUE SUN #11 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to a brand new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this edition, it’s anniversary time for one of the massive-verse’s biggest stars. One year ago, ROGUE SUN made its’ debut and welcomed readers into the world of Dylan Siegel and the supernatural side of comic’s most exciting universe. Leading into year two & being featured in a prominent event with SuperMassive 2, this superhero saga has fans looking forward to a big 2023. However, Dylan’s got some unsettled business with a brand new threat to deal with before closing off its’ second arc next issue.

ROGUE SUN #11 by Ryan Parrott, Abel, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey (editor Michael Busittil) brings the latest chapter with the mysterious Hellbent. Being pushed to his limits, let’s take a closer look and see how Dylan is handling a threat unlike any he’s faced before, shall we?

ROGUE SUN #11

After the death of his father, Dylan Siegel is passed down the mantle and powers of Rogue Sun, the supernatural protector of Earth. Since that life-changing moment, Dylan has had a rough road learning to become a hero while balancing out a “normal” life with a new family he knew nothing about prior. Factor maneuvering through high school and Dylan has his hands full. Readers have watched him face dangers head on, even taking a deep personal toll on him. With everything he’s been through, his current challenge might be his most dangerous (and it’s not an upcoming Homecoming high school dance either).

A villain driven on revenge for what Dylan did involving his father, Hunter aka Hellbent made a deal with a powerful and dangerous entity which has ties to his father: Mourningstar. From their initial encounter, Hellbent left Dylan for dead. Trying to fight back against a villain who nearly killed him is going to a tough ask for the young hero by himself. Luckily, Dylan has a new mentor in the form of Caleb Hawthorne, the KNIGHT SUN! After being summoned by Dylan’s step-sister Aurie, Caleb has filled in a void Dylan needed desperately. With one shot to take a magical Quill out of Hellbent (and his boss’s reach), Dylan takes a trip on the wild side to the realm of the Ravyn Queen.

This issue picks up where Dylan and Caleb are meeting with the Rayvn Queen in her Aviary realm about the history of the Quill. Readers get an excellent breakdown of how the magical creature was wiped out from existence and the only remnant was the powerful feather. Dylan pleads his case to the queen but it’s getting the feather that easily. He’s tested to challenge her imposing protector of the Aviary in combat. Should he survive, Dylan gets the feather. Failure means dire consequences. Against his council’s wishes, Dylan accepts.

Meanwhile back in New Orleans, Hellbent is growing his influence by pushing drug dealers to expand their coverage with him providing protection for a cost. Hellbent’s actions haven’t set well with his father and now draws the attention of Mourningstar. Hellbent diverts his plans for now, recommitting to taking care of Rogue Sun. All the while, the homecoming dance is unfolding at Dylan’s school. Dylan wasn’t planning on attending but now his dance card is full. Can he survive the Doorman to acquire the Quill? Is this enough to stop Hellbent and Mourningstar? At what lengths are the villains willing to go to get what they want. Readers don’t wait long as the final act sets things in motion for what can only be a showdown for the ages that in inexcusable to miss!

BREAKDOWN: Parrott juggles many elements of this issue with ease building towards a monster conclusion. The Ravyn Queen panels showcase the growing pains of Dylan and Caleb’s new partnership while trying to find a way to stay on the mission at hand. The banter between all three is solid and even drops a few great one-liners in the mix. It’s resolution works and gives this issue some great action points while unearthing more about Rogue Sun’s potential (as Dylan is still learning what he can do with his power). There is a big moment where this comes to life that readers will be excited to see. There’s a conversation later in the issue between Dylan and Caleb that ties this current arc together perfectly reflecting on fathers and son. Hellbent and the dance attendees maximizes their respected time in this issue with noteworthy scenes. The final moments of this issue cap everything off perfectly leaving readers on the edge of their seats for next issue.

Abel returns to Rogue Sun after being off the last two issues with a strong return. The Aviary realm display had a great look to make it pop off the page. Readers will have no question where they are in that portion of the story. The confrontation with the Doorman played out with some fantastic moments, and one new element featured in Rogue Sun’s arsenal that will have a huge positive reaction amongst the fans. The panels involving Hellbent’s father showed off excellent emotional reactions to the events unfolding. It ties everything back to how this all began with the father and son narrative which plays such a huge role for this series. Incredible mic drop moment with the final panel to send readers into the arc finale next issue.

FINAL POINT: Abel reunites with Parrott and the team to bring the Hellbent arc to a boiling point with this issue. Readers will be locked in from the start with fantastic storytelling and art which has become this series’ calling card since its’ debut one year ago. Rogue Sun has never had the stakes set higher if he fails and readers simply can’t leave the comic shops this week without this issue in hand.

PHANTOM ROAD #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, an Eisner nominated creative team reunite for Image Comics with a brand new series that will have fans talking on New Comic Book Day! PHANTOM ROAD #1 by Jeff Lemire and Gabriel H. Walta, the team behind Sentient, link up with Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands hits the open road with a driver who’s life spins out of control after helping someone on the side of a highway. Let’s take a closer look at this debut issue, shall we?

The story begins with a driver named Dom screaming at someone in his tractor-trailer to let him in, fearing for his life! With the door locked, Dom looks right at the reader with sheer terror in his eyes.

From here, the story shifts gears to an earlier time where Dom is driving down the highway at night. Things seem to be a routine drive. Dome pulls in to a rest stop diner for a quick meal and coffee. Dom sparks a conversation with the waitress about how he’s almost at his destination of North Dakota and they both close with “We’ll get there.”

Hitting the road again, Dom starts flashing back to his childhood and a rough moment between his parents fighting. His mother is angry at what his dad (a truck driver as well…like Father, like Son) has been doing while driving and neglecting his son. The dad counters with questions about the mother before leaving for a new job, promising Dom a new toy when he comes home.

When Dom focuses back on the road, he swerves out of the way of a car accident. With a body lying in the road, he finds Birdie sitting against the car with an object that caused Birdie to swerve in the road. With Birdie talking frantically, Dom goes to see the object. When he touches it, a green flash happens and they’re now in daylight with a mysterious figure in the distance.

Who is this figure? What was the object and what effect does it have Dom and Birdie? Are the pair even where they think they are? Things escalate quickly as the pair is thrown into a situation neither is ready for. The final panel will have readers waiting to see what happens next for the pair as their story has just begun.

BREAKDOWN: Lemire lays the foundation of a very engaging story. From the offset, Dom’s life is very routine in the sense of his job. The flashback moment with his parents is significant as it gives readers a glimpse of how Dom became set on this profession much like his father. Whether there is a connection to recent events or not remains to be seen as the story just shifted locations. The dynamic with Birdie was a strong point of the issue as well. Both are now connected and need each other to survive. The mystery of the artifact set the tempo for the final act with a great horror element before closing this chapter out.

Walta and Bellaire do a superb job bringing the (literal) day and night difference in Dom’s life to readers throughout these pages. The beginning of the issue is very relatable to readers and hits the emotional points when dealing with the family flashback. The panels where Dom sees himself and his dad at separate times while driving also jumps out. Great use of colors (Red lighting for the accident, Green for the crossover) to seq-way the story’s changes. Strong build throughout the final portion to capture the horror energy before closing with the near full page final panel.

FINAL POINT: Phantom Road #1 wastes no time delivering a mesmerizing tale combining the worlds of fantasy horror and realistic drama to give readers an excellent must-read addition to their comic collection. Lemire, Walta, and the team have something special in the making here, so jump on-board now and see what everyone’s gonna be talking about at the local comic shops!

RADIANT BLACK #22 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to a brand new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are now on the road to the Catalyst War with the Massive-verse’s flagship title. As it was announced this past week, RADIANT BLACK has a HUGE storyline starting at issue #25 which if you’ve been following this series, the seeds have been planted for quite some time. With that announcement, it joins No/One (due March 2023) and Supermassive 2 following after as premier comic events for comics’ most exciting line. In the meantime, there is a calm before the storm within the latest issue following Nathan Burnett.

RADIANT BLACK #22 by Kyle Higgins, Eduardo Ferigato, Ze Carlos, Raul Angulo, DC Hopkins and Michael Busuttil (Image Comics via Black market Narrative) takes a small detour from recent events to give readers a reminder of how far one of our heroes have come since issue #1. Let’s not wait any longer and jump in this trip to the west coast, shall we?

RADIANT BLACK #22

When this series began, Nathan Burnett returned home from a failed venture as a writer in Los Angeles. The only thing he has to show for it was a nearly $40,000 credit card debt. Once he returned to Lockport, Illinois, fate had different plans for him as he became connected to the Power Radiant and became the hero known as Radiant Black. In that journey, there has been highs, lows, near-deaths, passing of mantles to his best friend Marshall when he was in a coma, more radiants emerging and oh yeah……ONE GIANT FREAKING ROBOT! Last issue showed Nathan and Marshall being recruited by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to track down their nemesis Shift and his weapons trafficking in St. Louis while Radiant Yellow is breaking down the mystery of the giant robot and how the world as we know it is in danger.

During their venture to St. Louis, Nathan gets a message from his ex in LA, JJ, about a short story he wrote for TV. Nathan assures Marshall that he’s “very done” with LA. However, Nathan heads back to LA for a short moment with JJ’s assurance that this is a real deal for TV. On the plane, Marshall and Wendell (Radiant Yellow) have tasked Nathan to search Shift’s phone (which he took during their encounter) for more clues on the robot and what’s going after as told by Wendell). Once he lands, Nathan starts having flashbacks to his previous time in the city of Angels. After running into old friends Elizabeth and Micah, Nathan makes his way to JJ’s apartment with her new boyfriend (and Nathan’s old roommate) Brayden.

Readers will see the dread in Nathan has he “reconnects” with the obnoxious Brayden until the save is made by JJ, who’s spinning about the project but there’s some other factors involved that Nathan’s not so cool with. Clearing his head, Nathan checks out an address in Shift’s phone that might prove to be a valuable lead heading into the mystery of the robot. At this stage, readers see a quick moment of Radiant business before getting to the main event. After more flashbacks and time with Brayden (along with a surprise event), Nathan meets with JJ’s boss, the fate of Nathan’s story is displayed. How does the meeting go? What is Nathan’s reaction to all that unfolds? The closing moments give readers an ending to think about before heading into the next stage towards the Catalyst War.

BREAKDOWN: Higgins breaks away (for the most part) the super heroics to bring Nathan back full circle with a return to the beginning of his journey. The LA trip was an interesting call-back but one that worked factoring in what’s ahead. In a way, it almost feels as Nathan was trying to make closure on his past before facing an uncertain future. Seeing the flashback moments with Brayden (who was insufferable) established what Nathan walked away from the first time crystal clear to long time readers. Heading into the final act, Higgins sets things up where there is a different feel as Nathan meets with JJ’s boss. Thought-provoking final line and panel to close things out before heading back “home”.

The art duties were split for this issue between Ferigato and Ze Carlos (along with Raul Angulo), who last Massiveverse readers saw his work during Rogue Sun #7 (The “Choose Your Own Adventure” issue). This works great with this issue as Carlos’s art was the Radiant side adventure while Ferigato took Nathan’s trip in Los Angeles. Ferigato and Angulo portrayed the flashbacks exceptionally, making them stand out and contrasting the present day actions of Brayden. Seeing Nathan’s range of emotions added a solid layer to the story and gave depth to his backstory prior to issue #1. The final panels tie up Nathan’s journey and gives readers an interesting thought knowing what is coming up next when he returns back to Lockport.

FINAL POINT: Radiant Black #22 closes and opens a plot point for Nathan Burnett that has lingered since the debut issue. Higgins and Ferigato dive into the toll the return to Los Angeles takes while Ze Carlos keeps the super heroics featured with fantastic art and storytelling. The issue provides a calm before the storm facing our heroes this summer so make sure to check this out on New Comic Book Day to see a different side of Radiant Black.

For this entry, we’re taking a look at a brand new series from Image Comics with a very unique plot behind it. LOCAL MAN #1 by Tony Fleecs (STRAY DOGS), Tim Seeley (WILDCATS), Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio mixes the world of superheroes up with a great mystery behind it. Who is JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK and what has he done to go home super hero to “ordinary” Local Man? Let’s take a look at the debut issue and see where this journey takes us, shall we?

LOCAL MAN #1

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

This story begins with a young man named JACK XAVER sitting on a bench waiting for a bus. The area is midday, set in the middle of nowhere, 10 miles outside of Farmington (located in the Midwest). A driver goes by and mentions that the bus hasn’t run by this area in years. During the conversation, the driver recognizes Jack as Crossjack. Once Jack says that’s him, the conversation shifts. The driver speeds off and leaves him with the parting words: “F*** CROSSJACK”….. and here we go.

By nightfall, Jack makes his way to his parents. They are less than thrilled to see him. Jack is trying to be upbeat and positive with them but they are not budging in their tones. Both are disappointed and angry at Jack. His father begins drilling him about how long he will be there and what is he going to do now. The only one happy to see him is Pepper, their dog. Even in saying grace before eating, Jack’s mother asks for forgiveness for Jack’s actions embarrassing the family. As much as Jack is trying to reconnect with his parents, the cord is cut. The only concern is how Jack can fix this mess. Old-school Image readers hear the mention of a few classic teams as Jack is encouraged to get his job back with the superhero team THIRD GEN, who appear to have a Youngblood vibe to them.

With the parents not welcoming him with open arms, Jack takes off for the Barnyard Saloon to try finding some normalcy. The patrons aren’t welcoming but someone has crashed the bar looking for Jack: a costumed figure known as Hodag. Hodag is trying to relay some message to him, but Jack is too busy reliving his hero glory days. However, they’re far from the hero world and the patrons throw Jack out and Hodag is arrested. All hope seems lost for Jack until he runs into an old friend: Inga

While the pair catches up at Igna’s baked shop, Third Gen shows up with paperwork stating Crossjack and all things related to the image are copyrighted by Third Gen Enterprises and he is in violation for fighting Hodag. Jack is stunned to see this and his former teammates are none too pleased to deal with him.

Just what did Jack do to cause this much outrage? What does life mean now for a hero who can’t be a hero? Readers watch as Jack adjusts to his new life but not without a few moments in the final act that draw out more questions to what is going on involving the former hero with a strong final homage panel to close on. The back-up story explaining Third Gen is a great additional piece to show readers the background of what Jack was involved with being apart of that team

BREAKDOWN: Seeley & Fleecs dive head first into establishing everyone hates Jack. From the opening moments, the hometown hero has failed his city in epic fashion. The conversation with his parents is telling as they keep mentioning how Jack needs to get his job back and he needs forgiveness in the worst possible way. Really enjoyed the team callbacks from Image’s beginnings. The anger being dealt to Jack comes off strong and harsh, building that a line was crossed that can’t be looked past. The conversation with Inga proves to be a well-needed break from the consistent anger towards the hometown hero. With at least one friend, Jack has someone to lean on but clearly it won’t be enough. Interesting close to the book as there is much intrigue to what has happened to Jack and what is following him home.

The artwork captures the disdain of the town extremely well. The initial encounter with the driver sets the pace for things to come with two simple words: F*** Crossjack.” The moments with his parents come off big as readers see the sheer disgust to Jack’s situation. During the fight with Hodag, the art switches for a quick panel to show Jack reliving what he was apart of with Third Gen. It’s a great intro to the back-story “flip book” with perfectly captures the 90’s feel of Image. The story involving Hodag will be one to watch as it’s only begun to scratch the surface of why he showed up in Farmington.

FINAL POINT: Local Man #1 brings forth the mystery of a hero’s fall from grace and is it possible to be redeemed? Fleecs, Seeley and the team deliver on excellent storytelling and artwork to gift readers a tale that is more than it seems. Don’t miss this book on New Comic Book Day.

BLACK CLOAK #2 (IMAGE COMICS)

For this entry, we’re checking out the next chapter in a sci-fi murder mystery from Image Comics. The debut issue was an impressive read which earned the highest possible recommendation from yours truly. That statement was echoed by a great deal of fans who have created a huge buzz surrounding this story heading into the second installment. Black Cloak #2 by Kelly Thompson, Meredith McClaren and BeccaCarey welcomes readers back into the world of Kiros & Detective Phaedra Essex. Let’s not wait another second and jump back into the fallout from the debut’s cliffhanger ending, shall we?

Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the throne of Kiros (the last city of the known world) is discovered dead. This passing captures the attention of Detective Phaedra Essex and her fellow black cloak Pax, who are now tasked to solve the mystery of one of Kiros’ royal family’s death. There is nothing ordinary about Freyal’s death as there is a connection to a pair of dead bodies discovered near the Lagoon, one of many noteworthy locations throughout Kiros. The pair begins to dig deeper into this situation resulting in an uncomfortable visit with the Queen and Phaedra. Word of Freyal’s death spreads fast and by the time Phaedra and Pax return to the station, there’s a huge list of suspects claiming involvement with the death. However, one person of interest is there for another reason as they stab Phaedra with a special blade!

This issue opens up with Phaedra waking up in the Kiros police morgue after last issues’ assassination attempt. Shaken, Phaedra is trying to put together the pieces of what happened with Nida. The conversation gets heated after wings appear to be growing out of her back. Nida says Phaedra should reveal her truth: She’s half Dracona which she feels would put her family in certain danger. Phaedra brushes this off and tries going back to work examining Freyal’s autopsy. This prompts a flashback to happier times between the two. Once Phaedra returns to the station, she and Pax start interviewing witnesses for information on the case. Most lead to dead ends but one conversation emerges with a possible break in the case. However, that isn’t the biggest reveal in this issue. What happens when Phaedra returns to her apartment? Who is waiting for her and what information is talked about that sends Phaedra and Pax into the next chapter? Readers will have much to talk about following this issue.

BREAKDOWN: Thompson keeps the mystery and intrigue front and center with this issue. The world of Kiros is still opening up to readers but nothing is tipped off too much. Phaedra and Nida’s conversation is a big moment as the secret behind Phaedra slowly comes to light in just a few panels. The flashbacks with Freyal is a solid break from the sleuthing to showcase Phaedra’s secret while trying to be normal in this unique world. The new characters introduced in the final act prove to add more possibilities of where things can be heading. It’s the great thing about presenting a whole new civilization with a debut series. Thompson plays into the open playbook and readers will begin speculating about what factors they are involved with in this unraveling tale. Excellent swerve with the final act forging a new direction in the case to close on.

McClaren and Carey make the flashback panels pop off the pages with a great switch in color schemes. The emotions pour out which readers will encompass how much Phaedra is motivated to solve this murder. The envisioning of the witnesses statement follows the same formula with the uses of light and dark. The residents of Kiros stand out as well during the interrogation moments. This landscape keeps expanding and the visuals are a big factor of why fans are getting hooked on this tale more and more each day. Great final moment to end things on.

FINAL POINT: The mystery continues to be a must read in the pages of Image Comics’ next big thing. Thompson, McClaren and Carey’s combination of fantastic writing and amazing art brings the world of Kiros to the masses without losing any of the mystique of the saga at hand. Cassia Costa’s life changed forever when fate found her. After moving onto the the Helix Campus, a prestigious high school in Apex City, Cassia bears witness to the entire city being uplifted from its foundation. The only thing saving the city is someone has activated protective shields around the entire city. While watching these events unfold, a red object flies into her direction and attaches itself to her. That object possesses the powers of Inferno Girl Red, a hero Cassia’s mother believes in due to past experiences she shared as a reporter. Now in the city’s darkest hour, Cassia is thrown into the superhero world as the signal of hope the people need.

After thwarting off a monster invader who almost hurt her roommate Harriette, this issue opens up with Cassia talking with her mother about what’s next and how Cassia doesn’t want the IGR power! Cassia’s mother explains how the city is in danger and the person who activated the shields might have a possible connection. Cassia’s mother also reveals about her past with the first Inferno Girl. In this reveal, she tells Cassia of how they were averting monsters attacks that were being helped by a secret cabal. With that knowledge, Cassia and her mom start a plan to dig into a possible return of that cabal and stop them.

Cassia returns to her dorm and catches up with Harriette, who’s proving to be a calming influence on her. Mixing in a few new characters such as Sung-Ho Park and his son Tommy proves to be a more grounded moment for Cassia. However, there is little time for rest as Cassia has an early wake-up call to have another go-around with some monsters. After defeating more creatures, Inferno Girl Red has made the attention of the cabal and a mysterious figure with a vested interest: The Griffin! What happens now when Cassia runs directly into this imposing force? Is she ready for the challenge? Plus, how does Cassia react when her powers have issues working? Cassia faces her biggest challenges yet but nothing will prepare her (or readers for what happens during the final moments of the book! What feels like a routine mission at this stage proves to be more consequential than anyone is ready to deal with!

BREAKDOWN: The dynamic between Cassia and her mother has been a huge part of this series thus far & Groom allows that to take center stage for this issue. Cassia is still coming into her own as a reluctant hero but seeing her mother’s positive reactions gives her hope as much as she’s inspiring the people of Apex City. Another noteworthy point of this issue is Cassia’s struggles with her powers. With how fast the story is moving, readers might forget she just received the powers and is still in a learning phase with them. Seeing how she’s still going despite the set-backs shows Cassia is becoming the hero her mother (and others) are believing she can be. Mr. Park and Tommy have some mentionable page time for this issue but seeing how they impact the story is not defined just yet. They both appear to be characters to watch. The issue concludes on an emotional note that looks to push Cassia even further as it appears she will be tested in a manner she could never expect.

D’Urso is absolutely crushing this book with the artwork. Cassia’s pessimistic reactions to her mother’s constant optimism adds more depth to the story being told. In her role of being a symbol of hope, Cassia is wearing her doubt. Seeing her start to overcome that after each win is easy to see for readers. Speaking of those wins, let’s talk about those action panels! They have a frantic energy to add some intensity to to overall story. The initial debut and actions of the Griffin come across huge, making an immediate impact. Each panel feels like it’s going to fly off the page when IGR and the Griffin face off. It balances out the huge closing event and Cassia’s reaction to it. Nothing but huge wins this issue with D’Urso and Monti’s work.

Radiant Pink (aka Eva aka the streamer known as “Evaplayss”, has been overactive in her heroic duties worrying those closest to her. When a charity fundraiser she makes an appearance at is disrupted by an explosion, Eva jumps in to help. During this, Eva is teleporting Kelly, an EMT out of danger but they wind up far from home…as in other world far away. With her powers not working right, Eva tries finding a way back with detours to other worlds, with an eventual landing spot to a cat spaceship. On board, Eva is injured by the ships protector…a HUGE cat. At this point, Kelly reveals she is wearing a vest with is syphioning Radiant Pink’s power!

This issue opens up with a flashback sequence diving into Kelly’s past and how she came into contact with the power vest. Kelly’s visions are interrupted by Eva waking up on the cat ship. Eva quickly remembers what Kelly’s action caused and how many people could have been hurt. A fight ensues while Kelly is trying to plead her case about her actions. Once the pair calms down for a second, readers see a truce form long enough to make plans to try going home again. Once back on the ship, more secrets are revealed. Will the pair be able to make it home with the broken trust shown? What is the secret behind the ship they’re on? What happens now when they try to leave this planet? Many questions are answered with a few more raised before closing out this book on an interesting final visual.

Radiant Pink #3

BREAKDOWN: Camarena and Flores keep the light-heartened tone throughout the book with a few more serious moments mixed in. The flashback sequence is more serious as readers see glimpses of Kelly’s past and why she’s involved in the attack on Eva. Her story has much to explain but it takes a sidestep to the bigger plot point for this issue. Speaking of which, The reaction Eva has to Kelly’s actions makes perfect sense and doesn’t feel completely over, even with their truce intact. It works long enough to deal with the ship and its’ true situation, which plays into the fun aspect of the book. The closing moments throw a curve into the story nothing to knock it off track from the fun read the series has been.

Kubert and Nalty hit the mark with Kelly’s flashbacks. Using a different coloring scheme on the panels worked to connect the sadness of hr past, leading into the more defined panels of the present time. The emotional outbursts from Eva were captured perfectly as she’s now not just fighting Kelly but her broken trust as well. The alien world aspect involving the ship gave a solid contrast to Eva’s reactions and more serious interactions with Kelly. Interesting final image to end this chapter on moving into the home stretch for this series.

For this entry, we’re taking a look at a brand new series from Image Comics that reunites a fan favorite creative team on a new superhero story that is sure to have fans talking. Torrent #1 features the team behind Resurrection: MARC GUGGENHEIM (Arrow) and JUSTIN GREENWOOD (Future State: Gotham), along with RICO RENZI and KEITH WOOD to showcase what happens when a hero crosses a line they can’t go back from. There is much to break down from this debut, so let’s jump right in, shall we?

This issue kicks off with Michelle Metcalf aka CRACKERJACK bloodied and bruised moving thru a hallway with multiple firearms strapped to her jacket. Metcalf is narrating of a simpler time before opening fire onto her enemies.

The book shifts to what appears to be a more heroic time for Crackerjack as she’s fending off a a daylight bank heist from some powered supervillains. Metcalf does have an “ally” in her fight as Slipstream makes his way into the battle. Slipstream thinks he’s the young speedster sidekick to Crackerjack but the feeling isn’t mutual. During their banter, one of the villains fires a laser blast at the pair injuring Slipstream’s leg. After disposing of the villains, Crackerjack gets Slipstream back to her hideout to attend to his wound.

After spraying it with some “proprietary technology” Crackerjack gives the orders to Slipstream NOT to do any crime-fighting for 48hrs to let the leg heal. Slipstream agrees and the pair splits up. Crackerjack returns to her family as Michelle to have dinner with her husband and young son.

However, Slipstream has doubts about his instructions to take it easy and heal. One bad decision later causes a domino effect to happen that no one can predict. What choice does Slipstream make? What are the ramifications of his actions? How does Michelle’s life turn from optimism to anger? Readers don’t wait long to see how fast her life unravels to leave a new mission in its’ wake. This is no ordinary superhero tale.

Guggenheim showcases how close of a line heroes walk before crossing over into a new persona. The beginnings of the book give a bold statement of how fast this can happen. Metcalf’s hero life starts out as a very light-hearten one that reflects traditional super hero themes. Ever the optimist, Metcalf does what she can to help Slipstream become a hero, whether she can tolerate him or not. Their dynamic is engaging to watch as he clearly is too stubborn in his youth to find his faults. This element of his character comes back in a big way to set forth Metcalf’s journey into being a vigilante. The story moves very quick but nothing is lost in its’ set-up. The final panel proves slowing down won’t be an option here (nor should it).

Greenwood and Renzi do an excellent job with the layout for this comic. When Metcalf is in her vigilante phases, the tone and feel is dark and brooding. When she was more heroic, the panels had a more energetic feel with brighter tones to help solidify that point. The initial set-up with her family brought out the emotional side of her character and made the events of the final act more impactful when they all unfolded. It paired up well with the fallout of Slipstream’s choices. There is much to enjoy from this book.

FINAL POINT: Torrent #1 gives readers an inside glimpse of how one bad choice can spiral a great hero into uncharted territory. Guggenheim, Greenwood and the team introduce the world of Michele Metcalf to the masses with an excellent story and sensational art. You definitely want to have this book on your radar for New Comic Book Day!

THE DEAD LUCKY #6 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the battle for San Francisco heads toward a conclusion in the pages of one of the stars in comics’ hottest line of books: The Massive-verse (home to ROGUE SUN, INFERNO GIRL READ AND RADIANT BLACK to name a few)! Since its’ debut on August 3rd, 2022 (aka #DEADLUCKYDAY), readers have been taken on quite the journey with an excellent first arc. THE DEAD LUCKY is set to take a hiatus after this issue with a return after one of the biggest events in comics for 2023: SUPER-MASSIVE 2! Until then, THE DEAD LUCKY #6 by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO AND BECCA CAREY (along with editor Michael Busuttil) for Image Comics looks to wrap up loose ends before taking a pause in the action and drama.

THE DEAD LUCKY #6 - On Sale February 15th, 2023

Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka Bibi returned home after being honorably discharged from service to a drastically changed San Francisco. The city and its’ people are now caught in-between an ongoing conflict between the Salvation Gang, who claim to be fighting for the interest of the people, but are they really?, and Morrow, a corporation who looks to control with its’ tech influence. While this conflict is unfolding, Bibi is addressing her own mental health issues (PTSD and Survivor’s Guilt) and the event from Afghanistan that gave her ever growing electrical based powers and killed her platoon as well.

When escalating fighting happening, Bibi gets involved, much to Morrow’s displeasure. When they try luring Bibi out in the open, her parents’ restaurant, Chi-Mexi-Q, is destroyed and her father is nearly killed. From this action, Bibi makes an uneasy alliance with the Salvation Gang but that doesn’t go exactly as planned.

Bibi meets with Gust (the head of the Salvation Gang) Shift (a notable figure last seen in Radiant Black, who’s loyalty is there for the paycheck (or is it in this case?) and the gang to make a plan to strike Morrow. With a plan in place, Bibi says her final goodbyes before returning to the Gang headquarters. However, Gust cuts a deal to sell out Bibi to Morrow, who attacks them at their home base! The battle rages on with Shift warning Bibi of what’s unfolding before her. With Morrow surrounding her, Bibi prepares to make a stand and with her platoon of Ghost, Spaceman and Tanky controlling Morrow Bots, she might be lucky enough to make it out alive.

This issue opens up with a flashback sequence of Bibi in 2017 with her breakup with Eddie, who readers know as her ex-boyfriend/ally. The story time-jumps to the present where Bibi and remaining members of the Salvation Gang make their stand against Morrow. In the battlefield is Reporter Mack Sands who Bibi is trying to save. Needing any help she can get, Bibi asks Shift for an assist but in typical Shift fashion, there’s no money involved and its’ not part of his contract so he leaves her stranded. Bibi rounds up Torrid, Factor, Shorty and Winston from the Salvation Gang along with Sands, who’s taping everything to make a final play. As they go back inside the warehouse, Morrow’s forces grow outside, even with the Bots standing guard protecting Bibi and company.

Bibi knows she’s the one they want and plans to fight. Morrow unveils a new Air Guardian droid to attack. Bibi tells everyone to run and heads right into the direction of Kane, a Morrow fighter who’s leading point on this mission. At this point, I’m giving fair warning now: BRACE YOURSELF FOR WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!

Readers bare witness to an unforeseen player making their way into the conflict. An action is taken that changes everything. The ramifications are HUGE to Bibi and hit very hard in the emotions. The fallout sets up a very unique moment that fans will be talking about until its return, but trust me when I say, the story of Bibiana Lopez-Yang has just begun…

Flores caps off one hell of an arc with a brilliant ending issue. The conclusion is going to blow readers away. Through this first arc, readers have seen Bibi thrusted into the role of reluctant hero and push forward against insurmountable odds. Not everything has gone perfect but Bibi refuses to quit on the people she cares about and the city itself. It’s a character trait that shines thru this issue. The banter between her and Shift is brief but a big win (side note: Fans really need a covert ops-esque series with those two as the leads at some point).

Seeing Bibi step up to lead the remaining Salvation Gang was a noteworthy moment as well. However, the emotional roller-coaster of the “new Player” that jumps in will hit readers very strongly. The conclusion is a great swerve as well and one that will excite fans until Bibi’s return later this year. I really don’t want to spoil anything but readers really need to see it for themselves. There’s a tremendous amount of win for this issue.

Carlomagno’s art crafts the emotional panels extremely well for this issue. Seeing these dramatic moments balance the high-paced action out worked on many levels. From the coldness of Shift denying to help Bibi to her directing traffic with the Gang and Sands, there are many emotions displayed through this issue. Take nothing away from the action as Carlomagno & Iacono make certain moments pop right off the page with an energetic feel. If you think those are great (and you should), just wait till you witness the heartbreaking moments in the concluding pages of this story. The final panel drops a huge exclamation point on this chapter. Readers have much to enjoy visually.

FINAL POINT: Since the first issue, Flores, Carlomagno and the team have welcomed readers to San Francisco and introduced them to a great new story that consistently reestablishes itself as a must-read series with its’ incredible writing and art. The conclusion of The Dead Lucky’s first arc doesn’t falter at the finish. It delivers on big action and bigger moments which has become a staple of this series. Highest possible recommendation.

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new title from Image Comics that has been making a tremendous buzz around comic fans. After seeing who’s creating this story, there’s no question on why the buzz is as big as it is! MONARCH #1 by Rodney Barnes (KILLADELPHIA, BLACULA, HBO's “Winning Time”), Alex Lins (NEW MUTANTS), and Luis Nct (SLEEPERS FABLE) presents a very captivating sci-fi story that challenges a young boy to face insurmountable odds head on. Let’s not delay and jump right into a deeper dive of this debut issue, shall we?

MONARCH #1 - On sale February 8th, 2023

This issue opens up with a narrator explaining this scene from ten hours prior. The narrator here is a young girl named Daysha. who’s running through what looks like a warzone, but it’s actually a schoolyard. With energy blasts being fired around her, Daysha is waved into shelter by a teacher until he is hit in the face with an energy blast and dies instantly. Daysha goes thru the hallway where more people are standing. She shifts her eyes to Todd, a young boy on the staircase. When she reaches for him, it appears a beam has hit the building, eluding to the worst. Readers see an energy force heading to Earth. The scene shifts to the City of Compton as a pink cloud looms overhead with the residents watching and waiting to see what happens next.

The story shifts to a young boy named Travon waking up for school. He looks out the window to see the pink cloud looking overhead. As he gets ready for school, he talks with his god-sister, Marli and his foster mother Miss Wilamae, who gives a concerned warning to watch out for danger in the form of Zion. Readers soon learn of that danger as Travon has to escape Zion’s anger on the way to school. With an assist from Daysha, Travon eludes Zion, but not without a promise to get him by day’s end.

After meeting with Todd, Daysha and Travon have a conversation on the school roof. At this point, readers find out why Zion hates Travon so much and with this looming, Travon is optimistic with his time with Daysha. However that moment is short lived as Zion jumps Travon later in the day. While Zion is punching away, the cloud in the sky makes its’ secret revealed. Their fighting stops but another battle begins as readers see what (or who) caused the opening moments of the book.

The story then jumps to three weeks later. Who survived what happened on that fateful day? With a future this bleak, Travon’s options are limited. What actions does he take now? Travon’s bravery in these times has shined but is it enough? The final moments of the book will throw readers for a curve and ends the book on a very unique moment, guaranteeing to bring people back for more.

Incredible first issue. Barnes sets the tone early with the opening scene. Showing Daysha running thru the schoolyard while energy blasts gave great foreshadowing for the danger coming without playing its’ full hand. Having the story shift to Travon’s normal life made connecting with him as a character to root for very easy. The conflict with him and Zion grounds this story as well. The time jumps didn’t take away anything from the overall story. The final act really ramps up the drama with a huge surprise that is only adding to the mystery of this book.

Another thing to note is the letter monologue colors. Seeing the events unfold thru Daysha (Red), Travon (Green) and Zion (Blue)’s eyes was an excellent add. There’s a lot to enjoy from the storytelling here.

Lins and Nct make every panel count as they balance out both stories here. The first one is the sci-fi element. In its’ introduction, the damage is huge and nothing is held back showing the effect its’ having on the people inside the school. The other story is Travon’s normal life. Showing the emotions and reactions of the first time readers see Travon with Marti and Miss Miss Wilamae made for a bigger reaction when Zion makes his appearance. Once the initial attack starts, the art makes a big factor in showing how dangerous the cloud’s reveal truly is. Excellent final arc demonstrating the high emotion tension and shocking close to this chapter.

FINAL POINT: Monarch #1 is a fantastic tale mixing in the worlds of science-fiction and grounded reality drama that you simply can’t miss out on. Barnes, Lins and Nct invite readers in with exceptional writing and artwork to see how a young boy steps up to face challenges beyond anyone’s understanding. If this book isn’t in your hands on New Comic Book Day, fix it quick.

Dylan Siegal leads a very interesting life. After inheriting the mantle of Rogue Sun after his father’s murder, Dylan is thrusted into the world of the Supernatural as Earth’s protector. Dylan might be the best candidate for the job but he’s making it happen, albeit never without its’ struggles. Dylan now lives with a family he knew nothing about while trying to navigate one of the scariest places on Earth: high School.

Where we last saw Dylan, he was left nearly for dead by a new antagonist known as Hellbent. Meanwhile, his step-siblings tried conjuring their (and Dylan’s) deceased father for help. What they got instead was Caleb Hawthorne, the KNIGHT SUN! As this issue opens up, readers see a quick introduction to Caleb as he fends off a creature. Dylan, who’s recovered from his injures meets Caleb and it goes as well as one could expect from Dylan. Due to her actions, His step-sister Aurie has been sent away from the house in fear of more reckless actions. All the while, the latest danger to Dylan starts making more moves.

Hellbent checks on the condition of his father who was hurt in a confrontation with Rogue Sun. While a the hospital, Hellbent re-connects with an old friend eluding there’s money and power to be theirs for the taking. After a brief stop thru school, Dylan meets up with Dotty Perrine, the shop owner who’s an ally to Rogue Sun. While at the shop, Dylan gets some much needed information on Hellbent and the mysterious hand-print that has been featured on some of his rogues. Readers find out the mark is referred to as “The Favor”, and Rogue Suns have battled them for quite a long time. With more information about the mark, Dylan makes a plan which screams uncertainty for what’s to unfold.

What is his play? Can Dylan stop Hellbent? And what about Caleb? Can he be trusted to help or is there more to him than what we’ve seen thus far? Lots of questions heading into the final act of this book. Readers had better buckle up as the journey into the closing moments are going to get a bit bumpy and wild, which is never a bad way to close out a strong book on.

Dylan Siegal is a unique character to follow. Parrott presents him in this issue with his brash, standoff attitude but seeing the interactions with Caleb shows Dylan might soften his stance. Considering how Marcus and Dylan never had a good relationship, it will be interesting to see Caleb in that “mentor” role. There’s a line that Caleb says that readers will know in that moment, he has won over Dylan. On the other hand, Hunter aka Hellbent trying to save his father and losing himself in the process made for another strong piece of storytelling. In a very short time, Hellbent has established himself as an antagonist with a tragic story of great power corrupting the purest intentions. How close this could have been (and still could be) Dylan’s life made for an excellent read.

Renna sticks around for fill-in duty again and that is such a big win for readers! The introduction of the Knight Sun was a great opener for this issue. Renna wastes no time establishing Caleb’s skills and this plays out greater further in this issue. The emotions and expressions of Dylan’s normal life” jump out as well. With all the supernatural elements with this book, the “human” scenes give a solid break and demonstrates to readers fun (even if a bit harsh) moments of trying to grow up while still being a hero. However, the final act is where fans will be praising the art (as they should). When Dylan and Caleb start to execute Dylan’s plan, the destination pops right off the panel with a great deal of energy and wonder. Excellent final shot to set up next issue.

FINAL POINT: The Hellbent storyline continues to heat up with an issue you simply do not want to miss. Parrott, Renna and the team mix together fantastic storytelling and high-energy art to bring the latest adventure of Dylan Siegal into uncharted territory. The book keeps getting better and better & you don’t want to leave the comic shops with a copy this week.

If you’re jumping into this series and universe for the first time, Nathan Burnett and his best friend Marshall are the pair of heroes known as Radiant Black. The path to being superheroes has been a journey to say the least. Gifted with a range of powers from super strength, flight and more, the pair both have proved themselves worthy of the mantle.

When we last saw them, Marshall (along with Radiant Pink) head to Brazil to investigate the appearance of ONE GIANT ROBOT! When the robot hits the US, it’s a combined multiple Radiant effort to take it down. Now left with its’ head in the garage, Marshall and Nathan try figuring out their next move.

This issue opens up a government agency in Arlington Virginia watching the robot news unfold. A plan is set in place to grasp what is happening around Radiant Black. Meanwhile, back in Illinois , Marshall and Nathan talk about their next moves when the police pull up on them asking questions. The word is out: the Government would like to have a word with Radiant Black. Nathan agrees to set it up.

When he arrives at the meeting, a gentleman names Kieran greets him with the excitement of a fan. Nathan goes along with the conversation and is thrown a curve ball when Kieran’s branch of government is revealed. If readers think that’s a big surprise, just wait till they see who Kieran’s prime target is.

Who is the big target of the government inquiry? How does the pair see this all going down? Who is the fan-favorite who reappears when the guys need help the most? Readers don’t wait long as Nathan and Marshall set forth on a mission that doesn’t seem so earth-shattering but failure results in the end of the world!

Higgins weaves a few different plots throughout this issue. The first being that the government now has Radiant Black on their radar. Nathan’s interactions with Kieran sets up the bigger play later but has its’ touches of humor mixed in. Speaking of humor, Higgins nails the banter between Nathan and Marshall. World possibly ending? Readers wouldn’t get that vibe while the pair flies to St. Louis, where those moments readers will be most buzzing about. When the pair runs into their target, Higgins sets up the conflict with a strong case presented against the pair and how (even if the methods are questionable) he has a method to his madness. All of these elements combined continues to make Radiant Black a must-read each issue.

The art team of Costa and Ferigato brought a great balance of action and emotion for this issue. Seeing the pair’s reactions to the stakes of their mission was a big moment as they didn’t put that piece of the puzzle in place before. The flight to St. Louis showcased the friendship of Marshall and Nathan with more light-hearted panels beofre the action kicks off. Speaking of the action, the fight between the target and the Radiant pair was fast paced with a very cool 2 panel shot involving teleportation. The art elevate the key sequences and capped of a great issue superbly.

FINAL POINT: After dealing with ONE GIANT ROBOT, Radiant Black’s world shows no signs of slowing down with an issue packed with excellent storytelling and energetic action panels. Higgins, Costa, Ferigato and the team pack these pages with so many great moments, it is no question why this book sets a high bar with each release. Don’t miss this on New Comic Book Day!

BLOOD TREE #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Tomasi (Batman and Robin), Maxim Simic (Escape From New York), John Kalisz and Rob Leigh welcomes readers to ride along with two police detectives on one of the most bizarre and intense cases of their careers. Let’s not wait any longer and see what’s unfolding in the pages of its’ debut chapter, shall we?

Blood Tree #1 - On Sale February 1st, 2023

Our story starts out in Warwick, New York (about 60 miles outside of NYC). NYPD detective Dario Azzaro wakes up to find his young son trying to dispose of his “dead” goldfish, which apparently he’s previously had some bad luck in that department. After sending “Nemo” on his way, Azzaro heads into the city for work. The story jumps to New York City for the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. What should be a joyous occasion quickly shifts to shock and fear.

Azzaro meets up with his partner, Maria Diaz, to work the parade. A normal conversation is interrupted when a figure overshadows the crowd before crashing to the pavement. The figure is a naked “angel.” Azzaro shoves some politicians out of the fall’s path . With a public crime scene marked off, the detectives get to work. Heading to the rooftops, they find where the “angel” started his decent. A clue is left behind in a gargoyle looming over an edge. It’s a note that simply says “Blood begets Blood.”

After the coroner informs them of the lengths to cover up his identity, the detectives get a lead off a photo ID to talk with his parents. the conversation leads nowhere, but readers are shown a glimpse of who is behind this with another victim used as part of the twisted plan later.

With another “angel” falling in a public place again (this time Yankee Stadium) with the same cryptic message left behind, Azzaro and Diaz now start racing against the clock to try stopping this killer and solve the connection between the two victims. Readers will have much to break down as this tale is just getting started with many pieces yet to be shown.

Tomasi delivers on a solid introduction to this dark drama. There is just enough revealed concerning the killer and his actions that will lock readers in without tipping his hand to where this story goes. Pacing was outlined great to give each segment ample time to plant its foundation. The dynamic between Azzaro and Diaz counters the drama with well placed banter to break some scenes up. Perfect example of this is when Diaz gets done holding Azzaro while he checks the gargoyle. It’s a few quick one-liners but bridges their working relationship to the reader. The book end segments involving his son prove to raise some interesting theories that will be further revealed as this series progresses.

Simic’s art brought out the key elements of the debut. The initial “fallen angel” makes an immediate statement. From the small amount of blood to grace Azzaro’s face to the reaction of the parade goers, them moments’ frightening reality sets in fast to change the story’s direction. The facial expressions between the detective’s banter also stand out. It’s an easy tell to see how these partners play off each other mixed in with the subtle dialogue. The final image gives readers more foreshadowing of possible themes to come, but closes out the chapter with an haunting feel.

FINAL POINT: Tomasi, Simic and the team hit the ground running setting up the infrastructure to grow a very intriguing multi-layered mystery. Azzaro and Diaz’s latest case is a terrifying one that only has begun to reveal itself thru marvelous dialogue and art. The series has only unveiled a few clues which will have readers talking at the LCS this week. Make sure to check this out for New Comic Book Day.

The story kicks off with Cássia Costa heading to the Helix Campus, a prestigious high school in Apex City with her mother. Driving along, Cássia questions her mother’s story about being on a monorail. She mentions how she was there meeting a source for a story about museum artifacts. Suddenly, they were attacked by a frightening creature. Luckily, a figure bursts through the train car for the save. That figure is…. INFERNO GIRL RED! readers get treated to a great action sequence with foreshadowing into a greater threat looming.

During the car ride, Cassia’s mother gets a phone call about a reporting job but is turned down due to her IGR stories being considered untrue. This worries Cassia as she arrives at the campus. her mother reassures her she will be fine and to take full advantage of this opportunity. That said, Cassia make her way into a class, where she meets her future roommate Harriette and Doctor Janine Caro, a famous engineer, physicist and owner of the campus. With a brief class discussion and syllabus of expectations, Cassia settles in to school life with a trip to the library.

Along this trip, an unexpected event happens: Apex City is removed from its’ foundation?! A cloaked figure stands in amusement watching the move unfold as it appears the staff wielded is the catalyst. Cassia watches from inside the library as a red object meteors into her path and attaches an armband to her. From this moment on, her life will never be the same.

What direction does Cassia’s life go now? What is the grave situation unfolding? While catching up with her mother, Cassia knows what she is going to have to do. The question now becomes: Is she ready for her destiny? Readers sit ringside as a new hero rises to the challenge while questioning this new direction with a perfect final panel to close events off with.

Groom plays heavy into the themes of hope versus hopeless with this debut. Cassia comes across as a character still trying to find her way while picking up a responsibility she doesn’t think or want to handle. Yet, readers witness how she rises to the challenge at hand because of the confidence instilled in her by her mother. Their dynamic is the backbone of this series as Cassia tries improving their situation by the opportunity given at the school. Her mother puts her setbacks aside to build Cassia up which instantly connects with readers about how important their bond is. The pacing works well to allow the major players of this story to establish themselves early. Dr. Caro and Harriette provide a solid balance for Cassia from the heroic world she’s about to embark in. The action sequences move fast but don’t overtake Cassia’s trail by fire in her new persona. Seeing the original IGR in action gave readers enough to form an idea of what to expect with the powers that there wasn’t a huge need to have Cassia re-tell it through her eyes. This issue had action, drama and intrigue, a wining formula to hook readers in for the long haul.

D’urso and Monti’s art meshes up perfectly with the writing of the story. The world of Apex City feels vibrant and full of possibilities right from the two page panel when Cassia and her mom are driving into the city. The campus had a distinct vibe going on as well. It never felt like “just another school”. The bonding moments between Cassia and her mom also jump off the panels as seeing how supportive they are of each other is such a driving plot point. With all the world building going on,nothing takes away from the moment readers see Cassia in full IGR costume. There is no way the full page panel isn’t made into a poster as it drops a clear exclamation point that a hero has arrived! The action panels move swiftly and readers can sense the tension unfolding as both IGR’s showcase their powers in various manners. Excellent final image to close this chapter out of, leaving much possibilities for where the story goes from here.

IMMORTAL SERGEANT #1 - On Sale January 18th, 2023

The issue kicks off with a ‘72 Caddilac Coupe speeding around the Shady Glen Golf Club. When the car finally stops, a man jumps out and throws his pocket watch into the air and starts shooting at it. The watch is engraved to “Deputy Sgt. James P Sargent upon his retirement of 45 years of Honorable service to the N.C.P.D”. What would cause Sarge to start firing at his watch on the middle of a green at the golf course?

The story time jumps one week prior. A few officers walk into Sarge’s office trying to make small talk about his retirement. Sarge’s answer is on they’re not expecting as he makes it pretty clear, hes not happy to go. As Sarge starts scoping out the police station, he stumbles upon an item in his desk that shakes him up a bit. The item is a shoe that readers find out belong to a body found in a grassy area. Sarge speeds off to Coppers, a police officers bar. Sarge even has a seat engraved with his permanent reservation. He makes some small talk with the bartender before leaving for his car.

Once outside, there’s a few young punks hanging around his car. Sarge makes a statement in how he handles the punks by hocking them when they’re leaning on the car! Once inside, he looks at the passenger seat of the car where he’s taken the shoe of evidence with him! What is Sarge going to do with this shoe? Is it a clue to a bigger case? Readers tag along for the ride to one more stop before ending Sarge’s night with a message that might change everything heading into next issue.

Kelly sets up the foundation for a very intriguing story. Sarge doesn’t reveal too many details out this case other than a reaction for the shoe found in the evidence bag. Readers can speculate this is for a case unsolved by his actions. Kelly depicts Sarge as a gruff officer not ready to hang it up just yet. The social encounters he has verifies that. Sarge makes it clear he’s not going anywhere and lives that motto with some reckless driving. The final moments will throw an interesting dynamic into Sarge’s last ride and that will make readers keep a close eye out for the next chapter.

Niimura’s art seizes the frantic energy of Sarge’s life. The driving panels will really stand out as they feel loud and fast. There’s one full page panel that exemplifies how fast the Cadillac is moving much like Sarge is moving to outrun Father Time. The driving is only matched by the shooting at the golf course. The two-page spread pops right off the panels into readers’ faces. Sarge’s unique grinning in certain panels lets readers know he’s not going quietly into the gentle night of retirement. The final images are crafty enough to let readers know Sarge’s feelings with what is now getting added into his final week on the force.

FINAL POINT: Immortal Sergeant #1 greets readers to a retiring sergeant’s last week that is anything but oridinary. Kelly and Niimura bestow Sarge’s world with crafty storytelling and art to plant the early groundwork for a story that will only grow stronger and bigger from here. Get on board now! THE DEAD LUCKY #5 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, the battle for San Francisco presses forward in the pages of one of 2022’s best new series. This series was heavily nominated for this year’s CHEERSIES Awards and looks to carry that momentum into 2023. THE DEAD LUCKY #5 by MELISSA FLORES, FRENCH CARLOMAGNO, MATTIA IACONO AND BECCA CAREY (along with editor Michael Busuttil) for Image Comics sees the fallout of Bibi’s choice last issue and will anyone be ready for what’s next! The series has been excellent from the jump and it was announced that there will be a small break after issue #6. That said, the expectations for this latest chapter just spiked even further! Let’s not wait any longer to head back into the Massive-Verse to see what’s happening now, shall we?

San Francisco has never been the same since Bibiana Lopez-Yang aka Bibi returned home. An honorably discharged veteran, Bibi has now been caught into the middle of the conflict between Morrow, a corporation seizing control of the city with technology and the Salvation Gang, a group of questionable people fighting them back but can they be trusted? While this conflict is going on, Bibi has been dealing with her own mental health issues (PTSD and Survivor’s Guilt) post service. Being in the middle of the Morrow/Salvation Gang conflict, Bibi has had a tough introduction in the world of super heroes with ever growing electrical based powers. Not every outing has gone well. When Morrow lured her out in the public, Bibi’s parents restaurant was destroyed and she nearly lost her father in the process. With Morrow continuing to back her into a corner, Bibi makes a choice to form an uneasy alliance with the Salvation gang! “An enemy of my enemy is my friend” has never been more true than here.

This issue opens up Mack Sands, a reporter covering the fallout of”The Darkest Day”, which was an out of control protest. The end result gives Morrow a big win by being awarded the keys to the city by the mayor! With a growing influence on the city and “promises” by CEO Jimmi Moss (who’s been pulling strings behind the scenes) of making San Fran better, the public still is at unrest as martial law has been declared! In response, the Salvation Gang is trying to sell their vision of San Francisco to the reporter, with very little success. With the building tension, Bibi makes plans to handle Morrow with her new “allies”.

The Salvation Gang “acquires” some Morrow Bots for Bibi to control. When Bibi is told of their vision of her running all three bots, there’s a familiar face of the massive-verse that pops up: Shift! Last seen in Radiant Black, Shift has been hired to help the Salvation Gang with Morrow. Readers see there is a personal connection with Shift’s motivations in this instance. With the new player entering the game, Bibi unveils her plan of derailing Morrow’s influence on the city.

The Salvation Gang wants more of an extreme showing but Bibi sticks to her plan of less casualties and more effectiveness. How will they make this work? After a few hours and some possible final goodbyes, Bibi and the Salvation Gang try making their move until Morrow strikes first. Readers will have much to enjoy seeing the battle of San Francisco unfold. The action is big, but the surprises are bigger. Can Bibi work with Shift and The Salvation Gang? Is everyone on the up and up about why they’re involved Readers will also have one amazing final image to close out the frantic speed of the battle to process while waiting for the next issue.

Flores keeps a solid balance of drama and action within this issue. The dynamic between Shift and Bibi is payed up perfectly. It’s a reluctant pairing but seeing how their different personalities mesh made for scene stealing panels. Hopefully readers get to see more of this down the road. Witnessing Bibi prepare for the final battle was another strong area. Her final goodbyes* gave readers an insight to how heavy the stakes were going into the battle. Once Morrow makes the first move, the pacing really speeds up but takes nothing away from what’s unfolding. With the odds stacked against them, Bibi doesn’t back down. There’s a few moments that will make readers very excited to see play out during the fighting. The final act is going to be a great surprise for readers with a parting panel to carry that excitement to the next issue.

Carlomagno & Iacono hits the ground running with the battle unfolding. The action is BIG and everything you would expect from a battle of this magnitude. There’s an almost full page panel in the midst of the battle that will have readers amped up for what’s ensuing next. No spoilers but when the page is seen, it’s placed perfectly to kick in the next phase of he battle. The costume upgrades and weaponry were excellent as well. The back and forth between Shift and Bibi stands out greatly due to Shift’s smarmy grinning after every snarky comment to get under Bibi’s skin. It’s countered with Bibi not giving in (with the exception of a few well-timed one-liners). The final goodbyes came off great too as readers can easily sense that THIS might be the last time Bibi sees her family, Eddie and Maria Garcia. Heading into the last issue of the arc, there was much to be enjoyed here.

FINAL POINT: The Dead Lucky has arguably their best issue with #5, and that’s saying something with how incredible this book as been! With a familiar Massive-verse friend stopping by, Bibi’s battle for San Francisco shifts into a few unexpected directions but never loses sight of the endgame. Flores, Carlomagno and the team bring the action, drama and excitement that simply can’t be missed within these pages. Do not leave your local comic shop without this book in your possession!

BLACK CLOAK #1 (IMAGE COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new series from Image Comics that has generated a huge buzz before hitting the LCS. BLACK CLOAK #1 by Kelly Thompson (Eisner Award winner 2021 - Black Widow), Meredith McClaren (Hinges) and Beccy Carey takes readers on a creative whodunit epic blending in many themes along the way. . Considering the creative team behind this book, the hype is well warranted. Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening in this over-sized (50+ pages) debut issue, shall we?

BLACK CLOAK #1 - On sale January 11th, 2023

This story kicks off in the city of Kiros. Kiros is described as “the last city in the known world.” Readers discover that many years ago, there was peace made after a devastating war. Now in a state of tranquility, it would appear that things in Kiros should be great. However, it does not seem to be the case. Readers get ushered into a big example of how there’s still danger lurking within the city limits with many different characters living together in this fantastic new world.

A sea-like figure known as a “Maid” (note the fishtales) emerges from the Lagoon, an area within Kiros. The maid appears to die on shore in front of a group of fellow maids. Right behind them, a Elf-human named Dace also emerges lifeless and crashes near the deceased maid, with the group dispersing.

The story now shifts to Merchant Row where readers get introduced to Detective Phaedra Essex, known for wearing a Black Cloak to be identified as law enforcement.Essex handles a routine issue with one of the inhabitants of Kiros, a goat/human-esque figure before getting called away to what will be a shocking crime scene that she won’t be ready for.

That scene is located above the Salty Crow in an apartment in the Narrows. A fellow Black Cloak named Pax is investigating a dead body with royal ink on their arm. The body turns out to be Freyal III of Sidra, the heir apparent to the throne!

From here, Essex reveals a bombshell to Pax involving the deceased! The pair now starts to investigate Freyal’s death. First stop is to the Salty Crow, where more clues are revealed about Freyal. Once back at the station, the pair are called to the lagoon and now investigate the bodies found earlier in the issue.

How/Are they connected to Freyal? With more clues and a rising body count, readers won’t be ready for the next steps in the investigation. The tension keeps building and hits a certain peak when Essex gets clearence to meet with the royalty of Kiros with Freyal’s passing. Those scenes are impactful but get ready for the fallout. No one is going to be ready for that and the final image to close this chapter out.

Talk about a debut issue! With all the complexity of introducing readers to a fantasy world, at its’ core, Black Cloak is an engaging thriller. Thompson establishes that right from the start and never lets that sway what is unfolding here. There are many characters and figures making first impressions but none shine brighter that Detective Phaedra Essex. The character of Essex is a multi-layered figure as her connection to the murder victim drives the story into new directions. In a way, Essex becomes an enigma herself. There is no bigger (or better) example of this than when she meets with the Queen to inform her of Freyal’s death. As that business trip expands, questions become raised about Essex that plant the foundation for bigger answers later in the series. The partnership between Essex and Pax is another strong element in this book. It is very easy to pick up that the pair have been working together for a while and are committed to solving this high profile case with Pax making sure Essex can handle working it with all the emotional baggage involved. For being an over-sized issue, the story moves pretty steady without ever feeling like the leads are dwelling too long on any scene. The writing will lock you in from page one and doesn’t let go till the exclamation point put at the end of the issue!

With as fantastic as the story and writing is, McClaren and Carey match the drama and excitement of this story perfectly. With the fantasy element of Kiros, the characters all have distinctive looks. From the maids in the lagoon to proprietors of the Salty Crow to the Police Station characters and more, Kiros lives up to the “last city in the known world” with all the different residents. The city has many elements to it and for a first issue, it showcased enough to hook people in to find out more. Seeing Essex’s reactions to what unfolds in this issue is also noteworthy. McClaren never keeps the reader guessing on how Phaedra is reacting to a moment. The world of Kiros also is featured to readers as a place where more is going on that anyone realizes. There are many panels that will stand out but none might be greater than the final one page panel to end this issue on. Get ready for that!

For this entry, we're taking a trip back to one of comics' most creative universes: The Massiveverse and one of the best new series of 2022. ROGUE SUN by Ryan Parrott, Abel, Natalia Marques and Becca Carey has been nothing short of incredible issue after incredible issue (including the clever CYOA style of #7). Issue 8 set up the origin of a brand new threat to the young hero. Let's check out the latest chapter (ROGUE SUN #9 with guest artist Marco Renna) and see how the story is evolving, shall we?

Rogue Sun is the story of Dylan Siegal, the son of the supernatural defender Marcus Siegel aka Rogue Sun. Their relationship has never been easy. After his father's death, Dylan has inherited the mantle and is trying to become a hero no matter what obstacles are thrown his way. From Cataclysm to Suave to Ornate among more, Dylan’s life has been tested in ways that he never thought would happen. Factor in trying to balance a normal life in high school and a step-family whose feelings toward him can only be described as “complicated” and it spells for quite the captivating tale.

Last issue, readers witnessed the beginnings of a new enemy for Dylan: Hellbent. After Dylan intervenes on Suave’s latest plans, he unknowingly seriously injures one of the henchmen. At the hospital, The henchman’s son Hunter, finds his dad in very grim condition. While outside the hospital, Hunter comes across a creature and a weapon which can extract the revenge on Rogue Sun for hurting his dad.

This issue kicks off with Dylan looking for the lost Sun Stone (which gives him his powers as Rogue Sun). It’s discovered by Brock, who seems to have some ulterior motives with his sister Aurel concerning the stone. The story then shifts to Dylan in high school and preparing for the upcoming Homecoming Dance. His “friend” Bryon has secured a date via Dylan’s teachings but the same cannot be said for Dylan. After a creative way to ask, Dylan finds out his former girlfriend Vanessa has moved on with someone else. Left heartbroken, Dylan is looking for a distraction.

Readers see this distraction up close and personal as Hellbent makes a play on robbing the bank. Rogue Sun arrives looking for a fight. Readers get quite the first impression of Hellbent and what he’s capable of. How does this encounter go? How powerful is Hellbent? The answers come pretty fast for readers with a final act that is going to bring forth some questions heading to next issue.

Parrott balances out this issue with the high school moments and big action in the latter half. Fun segment with how Dylan asked Vanessa out for homecoming. With all the supernatural elements surrounding Rogue Sun, the high school stories play as a great counter to the more serious panels in the series. “High School” Dylan isn’t winning most over compared to his alter ego. Dylan has shown off more bully behavior than hero at school, but outside is a different story. Hellbent’s true introduction was pulled off superbly. Great fight sequence and post conversation to connect him with the audience. Hellbent’s not just a “bad guy” as the motivations jump out and really build this character upward. The sub-plot with Brock and Aurie will be one to watch in future issues. Great issue.

This book couldn’t have picked a better fill-in artist for Abel than Renna. The synergy with Parrott (who worked with him for Mighty Morphin by Boom Studios) never was lost. Seeing Dylan lay the elaborate way to ask Vanessa out to its fallout made for solid character work. Renna illustrates some great noteworthy panels such as Aurie and Brock’s Sun Stone tale. The fight with Hellbent jumps out at readers for its’ continuous action pace. Post fight made for some complementary reassurance to what levels Hellbent are willing to go on. The final image to close out the book on will definitely cause some buzz

FINAL POINT: Rogue Sun #9 makes a grand entrance for the latest rogue in the Massive-Verse while breaking away from the heroics to showcase the balance with “normal” direction. Parrott and Renna re-unite and drive home the issue was phenomenal writing and art. This series is never short of surprises and should be a staple of your LCS pull list each month.
