Ayodele sets up many bold dynamics involving the legendary X-Man's new status. Within the first few pages, the writing sets the tone worthy of the Mightest Mutant's attention. Storm is portrayed with a certain stoic demeanor. The Oklahoma City incident carries a huge level of danger and challenges that would break an average hero. This is fitting for a character of her level. Once she arrives on the scene, the story moves into a display of her power and compassion.

A nuclear disaster provides an insight on what makes Storm such a fantastic character. The writing shows the caring she has for all people. Readers watch as she balances Orchis supporters and an unstable mutant with grace and care that only a goddess can provide. This leads into a startling discovery and fallout.

As Storm addresses the masses over events, things are not what they seem. Ayodele throws in some curves before heading into the final page. At this moment, forget any preconceived notions. The new path Storm walks is one that hasn't been done before and leaves many questions. It's a strong start from the ashes of Krokoa's legacy that makes an immediate impact on the audience.

Werneck and the art team flourish in bringing Storm into a new beginning. In the opening sequence, the full page image of Storm "looking at her past" connects with new readers about her legacy. This rolls into a tremendous full page image of the Goddess in full uniform. The two page splash of the Storm Sanctuary conveys a sense of calm before Storm addresses the masses.

The chaotic backdrop of Oklahoma City moves with a eerie weight. This gets broken up by a two page spread of Storm helping residents affected. It is equally matched by the full page image of the cause of the problem. Once in its' resolution, Werneck and company bring events back to the present with mixed emotions from her audience.

The reactions range from shock to anger, which Storm strongly keeps her composure through. That said, the closing page puts another huge moment in play. The closing panel eludes to a larger future pending how she survives her present. The art team never lets the readers escape from the notion of her nickname. She is the mightiest Mutant for a reason.

It is a difficult task reinventing the near unstoppable hero. Ayodele's writing challenges Storm on many fronts while planting the foundation for a greater future. Werneck and the art team mix in solid action moments with the strong presence that only a goddess can carry with the art.

For anyone thinking they know Storm have never seen her challenged in this manner. It's a superb start to a new chapter in a legendary character's history. You won't want to miss this.

Williamson and Snyder swing BIG in this opening chapter. Splitting the book into two parts (one on heroes, the other on Darkseid’s view), readers get a vivid and bold picture of the new stat quo.

Time jumping one year after “Absolute Power”, the foundation of the new league plays into the concept of superhero evolving. Making Booster Gold the lead character is a perfect choice to usher in this portion. Gold’s legacy is a mixed one that has taken many turns. Seeing his reactions as he is optimistic for the chances given make a strong impression. As the conflict arises, the pace speeds up with each page. The resolution provides a shocking discovery. Once the close comes into focus, the writing leaves readers with a mic drop moment for what lies ahead.

It matches up perfectly to the eerie feel of the Darkseid portion. The tone dictates a new path to acquiring power. Seeing the new approach leads into dark places, not only in the DCU, but his own mind. The conflicts cause a showdown with an unlikely foe. It leads into more revelations that solidify a change in destiny.

Once that is cleared up, the story starts coming together with the other portion to create something brand new. It also creates something very darker in nature as well. The new landscape shows promise of a sinister backdrop which bodes well for Darkseid. How events leave off prove to be a fantastic mic-drop moment for fans to savor.

Sampere (Heroes) and Craig (Darkseid) are the two main artists for this chapter. Each bring a distinct style to their stories.

The heroes welcome in the promise of tomorrow with a strong two page spread. There are many cameos mixed in to showcase the high level of importance of the new initiative. This is followed up by a strong two page image putting the plan in place. Seeing Booster’s facial reaction connects the sense of hope with readers. It is quickly dashed as Darkseid hits the scene.

The near full page loudly ushers the new threat perfectly. it carries a big fight feel as the chaos begins. Its’ conclusion is gifted another two-page spread ending in a peculiar spot. This leads into the closing pages where everything readers know has drastically changed.

It is directly in line with Craig’s art for Darksied’s new beginnings. The pages are brooding with a sober overtone. Each conflict is portrayed with a blunt and unapologetic feel. This is Darksied at his best. Once he comes across his “prize”, the art locks in the moment with bright coloring . This leads to a huge one page image declaring a new shift has happened. It is a perfect homage to a legendary artist (the late George Perez).

The last stand of the DCU heroes has arrived. Amanda Waller has been one step ahead. Depowering her opposition, Waller and the Trinity of Evil were on the verge of total control. That was halted by an unlikely win on Paradise Island for the good guys.

Now poised to take a final attempt to stop Waller once and for all, the heroes race towards her Gamora headquarters with nothing left to lose.

When readers hear “Event”, there is a sense of wonder if a story will live up to the title. Waid leaves no uncertainty that this IS an event of epic proportions. The attack on Gamora kicks off with Nightwing giving another motivation speech before combat. His evolution into the face of the new DCU cannot be denied.

Once the battle starts, pacing moves the spotlight onto a few key characters. The conflict between Wonder Woman and Steel gets a proper payoff. Hearing the dialogue between Barry Allen and Hal Jordan as their play is made is vintage superhero 101. It balances out the faceoff between Waller and Nightwing before sending the story into its’ closing act.

Readers watch as Waid throws in a few surprises leading to the strong finish. An unlikely hero becomes the key component leading to victory. Another’s actions lead to a change that concludes the “Dawn Of DC” era. Waid balances out both moments to compliment the fate of Waller. Her fate is a fantastic twist that ultimately leads to a new era for DC’s heroes. Once the final page is finished, there is no question readers just witnessed true change in the DC Universe.

With the ensemble cast involved, Mora’s artwork shines throughout the final chapter. The opening build for the attack on Gamora features Nightwing’s confidence set a high bar for the battle unfolding. The attack kicks off with a gorgeous near full page visual of the heroes running into the fight. The rage of Steel losing the duel connects loudly as the tide is turning. It steers the story into a more direct flow that captures the essence to the heroes fighting.

Seeing the Flash/Green Lantern team-up pops off the pages. Jordan’s smiles through the conflict reminds readers of the fearlessness he often shows. Another partner of Hal’s gets a full page splash that leas into an amazing two page spread. The closing panels with Waller demonstrates a wide scale of emotions as the event concludes on a satisfying note. Mora and Sanchez’s epilogue pages leave readers on a fitting point as a era has ended with a fresh start waiting in the wings.

It is often mentioned in wrestling that fans only remember the finish. With this story, McCormack closes this initial arc with a thunderous point. Mona’s quest for vengeance has thrown her into the fire of the family business. Before the biggest match of her life, the writing steers Mona towards the bonds of family.

King Castro puts aside the promoter title and attempts to resume his other “job”: being a father. The dialogue pushes Mona into a unique place before making her ultimate choice. Once she commits, Mona dives right into the belly of the beast. Her commitment to go forth becomes her greatest strength. It is rewarded with a solid close. Even in victory, the ending offers up a notion this wont be the end of Kris Castro. That is a huge win for fans that have become immersed in her gripping family drama.

López-Ortiz and Moore leave readers with no doubt that Mona is ready for the spotlight. The panels while she’s preparing indicate the focus she has for the situation. This is a stark contrast to King’s worry and fright knowing where Mona is heading into. The world of Deathmatch wrestling is unforgiving enough. Factor in a a family member involvement and things elevate higher.

The match itself is flooded with excellent wrestling sequences. A full page splash captures the violence and anguish of combat. There is no shortage of what makes Death Matches stand out throughout the panels. With the near falls, the fight carries the drama that comprises a great contest. Readers can easily hear the crowd popping with excitement as the winner’s hand is raised. It is complemented by the closing pages. The art team crafts a sense of calm until the final image senses that the ref’s decision may not be final after all.

PHOENIX #3 (MARVEL COMICS)

In space, Jean Grey fights. Her journey has now crossed paths with her notorious father-in-law, Corsair. Their path has brought them front and center with The Black Order.

Thanos' group of minions have been connected to a series of disappearances. That doesn't sit well with the new protector of the stars. Did I forget to mention the undead Asgardians now involved?

Phillips is setting up two stages for this opening arc. Jean and Corsair's takes the center stage. However, Adani's steals some key moments. Her opening sequence with Perrikus shows the young upstart thrown into an unknown scenario.

Confronting (literally) ghosts from her past makes her journey more conflicted. The end result leaves a new challenge awaiting Jean Grey after her current dilemna.

Whenever Corsair is lurking, it is always with a sense of distrust. The writing shows Jean's hesitation to take his words at face value. It leads to more reveals as she presses the issue of the true reason for their conflict. Jean's play to dig further into reason shows off her resourcefulness.

Her play works as the insight leads to a strong resolution. It also delivers a fan-cheering moment as she leaves the Black Order with some pieces of advice. The aftermath sets a great stage for parting ways for now. Rest assured, the saga of Jean Grey in space is very far form over. '

The art depicts Adani's path as one of danger and mystery. With ghosts of her past reappearing, the audience can sense there is no easy way out. This leads to a noteworthy half page panel showcasing her possible destiny at hand. It helps to guide readers into the closing pages as an endgame is slowly revealed.

In the meantime, Jean and Corsair's adventure is filled with great action. The opening salvo features Jean bursting into action. Readers watch as she pries into the mind of an Asgardian and becomes aware of a hidden truth. This sets Grey on a collision course with the Order.

Without question, the new direction of Rogue refuses to let readers escape its' welcomed grasp. Being the new "headmaster" provides many challenges for Anna Marie. The biggest obstacle isn't necessarily her new students. It's convincing Wolverine to buy back into a dream he clearly wants nothing to do it.

This leads to Rogue showcasing why she is the leader of this team. Demonstrating the patience to allow him to find himself gives the biggest co-sign possible. Wolverine acknowledging that she doesn't need him cause she has this under control elevates this even further.

The training session for the Outliers provides a break in the drama. It also allows readers to get some insight on these mysterious characters. The mood shifts gears in the closing act. Seeing Wolverine confront "Sarah" provides many fireworks to start flying. Simone paces the fight out to let the new danger make a huge impression with their attack. It leads to a solid final page which leaves on a startling thought. Another fantastic read!

Marquez and Wilson start off the art with a haunting statis for one Charles Xavier. The shadows and narration drive the fear as the new threat begins. Wolverine's depiction of the new recruits is crafted with a unique panel set-up. The four way "X" look hits readers and foreshadows a possible future? It's still too early to say there but the image is a striking one.

With all the fantastic art, one series of pages will be the talk of the fans. Wolverine's brutal fight with Sarah carries a bold statement behind it. The art doesn't shy away from the brutality. Marquez's art relishes in the chaos of combat.

In dealing with any new character, first impressions are important to establish. Seeing how Wolverine is handled only enhances a building set-up. The quiet panel of Rogue's reaction to the fight ends events on a tense moment which is sure to lock in readers for the next round.

The new incarnation of Marvel's premier mutant team revs up the action and drama for another monster read. Simone's take on Rogue and her newfound mission continues to make for must-read stories. A murder has taken place in the realm of the Ravyn Queen. Dylan Siegel has been tasked with finding the killer before it’s too late. Fresh off the heels of confronting vein, there is no rest for the young supernatural protector of the Massive-Verse. Can he stop the killer before another dead body pops up at the Aviary of Secrets.

ROGUE SUN #22 by RYAN PARROTT, NICK COTTON, BRUNO FRENDA, NATALIA MARQUES and BECCA CAREY (Black market Narrative/Image Comics) features Dylan and his dysfunctional partnership looking to stop the body count.

ROGUE SUN #22 by RYAN PARROTT, NICK COTTON, BRUNO FRENDA, NATALIA MARQUES and BECCA CAREY (Black market Narrative/Image Comics)

The writing crafts a great build with the mystery of the Sparrow Sister. Since returning from the Kinght Sun saga, Dylan has been forced to grow up fast. The writing puts him in a position where he has no choice but to adapt or perish under the weight of the mantle. The dynamic between Dylan and his estranged father/mentor shines in this issue. There are many unresolved issues which linger in every move.

Seeing Dylan question Marcus about infidelity raised up their drama a few notches. This plays into the encounter with the assassin. Dylan’s novice nature of interrogation leads into some more unique moments before the danger arrives. Once at this stage, the writing puts Dylan in a situation he is clearly unprepared for. This leads to a shocking result of his overconfidence. The other character building pages push forward but the last page steals the thunder back. Suffice to say, this mystery is only begun to reveal itself.

Frenda steps in for art duties and wastes no time settinga high pace. The flashback sequence with Dotty and Divinity balances quick action amongst Dotty’s reactions to events. A solid sequence of images brings Dylan into the investigation. It plays into the mystique of the Aviary, leading to a confrontation of suspects.

Dylan and Marcus’ “chat” reflects an emotional toll their status has gone through. Marcus’s eyes tell a story within the panels. This gets interrupted with the shakedown of the suspect. From here, the issue carries a steady pace until the closing page. Readers get an exclamation point on the chapters conclusion via a strong full page splash. It leaves no question that Dylan might be in way over his skills as the Queen’s troubles have just begun.

When a murder rocks the supernatural realm, Dylan is put into action. The writing balances the family drama with a steadily climbing confrontation. Frenda and the art team present great action amongst the deep emotional strains. Where things lead from here is truly anyone’s guess but they won’t want to miss out.

Rey Mysterio. Tinieblas Jr. The Lucha Bros. Solar. Super Astro. Luchadors who have amazed fans inside of the squared circle for years. These individuals have now opened up the doors on a brand new comic universe. For its’ final chapter, another star that always “keeps it 100” has entered the game.

LUCHAVERSE: CATALYST #3 by Marco Lopez, Ivan Plaza, Kevin Klienrock, Diego Valenzuela, Puis Calzada, Javier Caba, Bryan Arfel Magnaye, Jacob Bascle and Micah Myers (Masked Republic/Massive Publishing) welcomes KONNAN into the lead story of the event finale.

The first story of this finale gives readers a crystal clear picture of what Konnan is bringing to this universe. From the start, it’s big action. Lopez and Plaze give a greater context of the previous issues fallout. Readers watch as the threat hits Konnan and his team directly. The action spirals through his base of operations. During the sequence, there’s a quick flashback before bringing the timeline back with a bang.

Fans will be very excited to see the battle unfold with many surprises. The writing mixes in various looks before coming to a thunderous boom. After the smoke clears, the closing act ties up events cleanly as the next phase takes over.

Caldaza and Magnaye creates the earth shattering fallout instantly in the opening pages. This is capped off with a full splash page starting the conflict off right. Pacing moves the action along at a solid speed. Readers never get lost in the shuffle as Konnon shows off his skills. Once the smoke clears, a full page image sets the epilogue in gear. The result leads perfectly into the companion story.

“Interludium” completes the loose threads of the previous two chapters to set forth the next phase on a strong note. The writing gives just enough page time to the Luchaverse leads to weave their stories into one cohesive path moving forward. The pacing helped to balance out the moving parts extremely well. Readers should be very energized about where things lead from here.

Phase one of the Luchaverse leaves readers on a high note as their next favorite universe is now complete. Solid writing introduces a definite fan favorite into the mix while capping off separate stories along the way. BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN - THE LAST HALLOWEEN #1 (DC COMICS)

The Long Halloween. A serial killer strikes on holidays early in the Dark Knight’s career. One of the greatest Batman stories of all time. Jeph Loeb and the late Tim Sale debuted the murder mystery in 1996. It was an instant hit with readers and produced a sequel, “Dark Victory” in 1999.

Loeb and Sale reunited 25 years after the story’s debut for 2021’s “Batman: the Long Halloween Special”. This sparked a return to their Gotham City storyline. Unfortunately, Sale passed away in 2022.

Loeb stated in an interview: ““About a year later, after speaking with Mark Chiarello and Richard Starkings, my partners on the previous Long Halloween titles, we decided the time was right to move this forward as a tribute to Tim, who continues to be with us in spirit.”

Loeb doesn’t delay in bringing forth the lingering aspects of Holiday on Gotham’s residents. The opening play with the Dents carries a high sense of tension. Batman’s monologue is haunting as the pages unfold. Featuring Gordon’s sub plot is a solid companion piece. It shows readers the stretching reach and effect what Holiday has done.

As for the caped crusader, Batman investigations take a familiar twist. His presence gets outshined by an overly-eager Robin. The writing presents a very naive Boy Wonder forcing his way into the case. It offers a small break into the drama but ultimately loses out to Batman and Two-Face. The closing act leaves readers with a shocking end as the mystery of Holiday looks to enter a whole new realm.

Risso leads off an all star lineup of artists for this series. The opening two page splash of the Dents sets a dark feel and tense pace. It carries into the terrifying Gordon plot. Readers see a switch in gears as the dynamic duo are gifted a tremendous two page image as they chase an evading Catwoman.

Stewart’s coloring raises the emotions of a very worried Gordon family. The panels pour with the frightening aspect of what has happened to the child. It is counters with a more somber image of Gordon shrouded in the shadow of the Bat signal. This all builds toward a steady final sequence. The parting image will leave readers wanting more answers to an ever developing puzzle.

Thompson instantly sets an intense stage in the opening pages. The encounter moves swiftly as Pax and Essex evade to survive. It leads to a quick escape but not without leaving clues. The writing shifts gears back towards Essex’s previous life as a Cloak. Her reputation with the city still provides conflict and disdain. None more evident than her previous relationships.

In dealing with Nida, the writing reflects the broken bonds left in Essex’s wake. Readers watch as the conversation sticks to business before ultimately heading back into the heartache. The closing act puts the case back front and center. With a new direction, Essex and company strive to stay one step ahead before they become the next victims.

McClaren goes big in the opening sequence. The reactions of Pax and Essex set the stage for the dangerous conflict. A full page spread locks in the moment as chaos is breaking out. The big imagery (along with Carey’s lettering) make an immediate impression on the readers.

The “reunion” of Nida and Essex carries the strain of former lovers. Each display a wide range of reactions seeing the other after all this time. It ushers in the closing act where the trio gets focused back to the deadly case. A fire victim’s fallout hits Essex with an overwhelming feeling of guilt. This hits the readers very hard as the protagonist takes another big blow to a weakened state. Events conclude on solid ground before entering new territory with a sinister panel to escort them. The art shines bright in this issue.

The return to Kiros doesn’t misstep in another excellent read. Thompson’s writing orchestrates the drama while the danger looms all around. The stunning visuals by McClaren continue to impress as the direction takes another turn. It’s high storytelling at it’s peak level.

The rise of “The Wall” concludes as Absolute Power is dominating the DC Universe. Amanda Waller’s journey to becoming a feared force has been trials by fire. Much like Batman, Waller’s path beings with a family tragedy. It is only fitting their paths become full circle for the origin finale.

ABSOLUTE POWER: ORIGINS #3 by John Ridley, Alitha Martinez, Norm Rapmund, Andrew Dalhouse and Steve Wands (DC COMICS) concludes a challenging tale for will and determination.

It is only fitting that Waller’s last adversary on her rise is the Caper Crusader. Ridley pens Batman as the ultimate test. The writing reflects the methodical way Waller looks to deal with a threat to her plans. Readers see the lengths she goes to with no regard for anyone else, including her family.

Speaking of her children, Ridley allows Waller to show little emotion as her schemes become unraveled. The exposure of taping a conversation with the President gives an insight on the divide Waller’s actions have caused. It also steers Waller back on her path to handling Batman. The cold demeanor which readers know begins to surface and solidify. This spirals into the bittersweet close. It leaves Waller exposing the belief that the actions justify the means. Will this come to fruition? Only time will tell.

Martinez and the art team usher in Batman’s attack on Waller in style. A full page spread sets the pace for Batman handling Waller’s forces. This is completed with a page that stares speak louder than words. The conversations with her family range from calm to quietly caring. Waller’s stance never truly waivers. The art keeps that angle throughout. With the closing chapter, there is a sense of reflection as to what Waller is doing. No matter the panel, the true sense of “The Wall” is on full display. Whether the DCU is ready or not is another question.

Amanda Waller’s rise to power wraps up with a solid perspective. Ridley’s pacing allows readers an insight into a dangerous mind. Martinez and the art team mix in action with high tension family drama. It’s a perfect combination for one of the most dangerous in the DCU.

Simone gives this classic tale a superb ending with the close. Lord Grunhar is a traditional villain who hits all the key points. Cheating the game to ultimately win is a perfect ploy. However, this chapter casts a big spotlight on what makes Superman so great. The writing reflects how he refuses to accept defeat. Even with his body breaking down, the drive for Truth, justice ad a Better Tomorrow remains unphased.

This leads into some creative plays from Lois and Jimmy. The conversation between Lois and Hux-Ur adds to the already hostile situation. Heading into the big battle, events play out as fans would hope. There is big action before the crafty ending. Once at this stage, events wind down with a well-timed landing and epilogue that remains excellent no matter what year you read it in.

Barrows and the art team never fall off from exemplifying the grand stage of events. The opening shot of Superman being helped off is gifted a full page splash. This leads to a great panel sequence of Lois and Hux-Ur. How the gladiator never acknowledges Lois drives him his disregard for her pleas, adding to the drama. Once the fight begins, the art gives a full page splash worthy of the epic confrontation. Imagery brings forth the brutality of Superman’s survival. This is matched by a striking image of Supes dropping a hammer fist onto his attacker. The final pages tie up loose ends and departs with a light hearted moment that is 100% Superman storytelling.

The side story of Rowell and Tormey concludes with a deep dive into the conflict of professional and personal lives. It is a solid conclusion to a perspective that fans might not have registered. This was a great companion tale that shows Clark and Lois and their best.

FINAL POINT: 9

The Man Of Steel’s trip back in time nails the landing in its’ concluding chapter. Simone’s phenomenal writing brings the finest out of the Superman mythos. Barrows and the art team construct a throwdown for the ages with the strong imagery. This is a fantastic read that adds another highspot in the legendary legacy of Superman.

Someone has tried killing Berg Katse. The dangerous enemy of GATCHAMAN has a long list of people who would like to see him gone. How does he respond when the threat is within the ranks of GALACTOR? With as much viciousness and determination as necessary.

The ruthlessness of Katse never escapes readers minds. Orlando drives this point home right from the start. The opening pages reflect how cold and vicious Katse can truly be. Orlando carries this energy into how Katse addresses his followers in Galactor. Knowing there are traitors in the ranks, nothing is held back on how far Katse will go to stop them.

The writing also lends itself to spotlight Katse protecting his secret. With his breakdown, readers see at how Katse attacks. No move is made without ration. It sends a quick message which draws out what he’s looking for. However, it also leads to a big shakeup in the closing act. Events unfold that change everything. It is a great landing spot for now to carry onward to the next phase.

Lobo throws in a great mix of splash pages to offset the calculating aggression of Katse. The mirrored full page splashes portrays him as a loyal servant to Leader X. His actions in killing Filiku run parallel to that cause. A two page splash of Katse walking amongst the troops carries his flare for control. The panels never escape his maniacal grin as he goes to work to draw out the traitors.

There is a moment where this gets broke away. The final act throws an excellent curve into the mix. Lobo’s art sets up the shocking move perfectly. It leaves readers with a distinct closing image that won’t be forgotten any time soon.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

The attack on Berg Katse intensifies with another thrilling chapter. Orlando delves into the mind of a maniac grasping for control. Lobo holds nothing back with the solid panels showcasing his scheming and obstacles along the way. This should definitely be on comic readers’ radar at the LCS.

X-MEN #4 (MARVEL COMICS)

From the ashes of Krokoa, the X-Men rise again. Cyclops leads a team from Alaska bracing for a public that distrusts them. They also face a familiar foe who’s all but ready to step into the spotlight: Trevor Fitzroy and the Upstarts!

MacKay throws a complex scenario at readers for this issue. Fitzroy leading his team of “social media killers” after a new mutant comes off disturbing and troubling. The Upstarts are playing off the fears of the public by trying to justify their killings. Cyclops answers the call but there is still lingering friction on the team. In this new post Krakoa landscape, the X-Men still feel like they’re trying to find their way. The banter between Beast and Cyclops is prime example.

That said, the breakout character here is Magik. MacKay puts her in the spotlight as mission leader. Seeing the plan executed to perfection will give readers much to cheer about. The ending half comes off with a few more surprises. With defeat, The Upstarts spin it much to the social media angle they play. Seeing the mastermind behind Fitzroy is a great reveal of X-Past. Once at the conclusion, the story becomes full circle. It all too fitting as Magik’s resolution becomes all too clear.

Diaz steps in for art duties with Parsons and Garcia along for the ride. Fitzroy’s stream comes off as psychotic as it needs to be. The reactions from Cyclops and Beast usher in the building tension surfacing as of late. It works to cast the spotlight on Magik as she runs into action.

The team gets a near full page panel jumping into action. It carries many traditional superhero themes that is always a plus. Juggernaut’s panels of action feel bold to match the intense dialogue he is saying. Events conclude with a full page image of the surprise villain. It rolls into a more quiet moment as Magik reflects on what happens and what is coming for her as being a fighter for Mutantkind.

FINAL POINT: 8.4

Magik takes the reigns of the team in a highly contested faceoff with Fiztroy. MacKay’s writing gives a close look to the twisted social temp of mutants and humans with the writing. Diaz jumps in bring electric art to a battle that is far from over. This feels like the start of something bigger for both the X-Men and humans as the events rage onward.

Batman. Superman. As individuals, they give villains the ultimate test. Together, they are nearly unstoppable. They’re going to need to live up to the moniker synonymous with them to defeat a true force in the DCU. Eclipso has returned. That can only spell trouble for the World’s finest!

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #31 by Mark Waid, Adrián Gutiérrez, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands (DC Comics) brings the action as an all new adventure is about to start!

Waid wastes no time in bringing the excitement level up to 10. From the offset, this is a classic JLA story. Showcasing Eclipso’s plans early raises the stakes immensely. Dipping back to the “24 hours earlier”, the writing features the heroes on a new endeavor. Eclipso is brought to this story with a vintage supervillain introduction. It plays perfectly off Robin’s dialogue as eluded Bruce Gordon wasn’t completely done with the dark demon.

Fast forward to present, Waid throws the pair into the deep end with conflict. Readers will truly enjoy the action taking place. With this many characters involved, the event needs to feel epic. There is no mis-step with this chapter. The closing act doesn’t slow its’ pace down until a drastic action is taken place. This leads to a perfect epilogue as more jump into the fray against DC’s Prince of Darkness.

Gutiérrez steps in for art duties for Dan Mora with Bonvillain on coloring and knocks it out of the park (Editor Note: If you haven’t read his Blue Beetle work, make a point to). The action really begins with a near full page splash of Eclipso’s “team” attacking Superman.

From here, the initial debut of Eclipso kicks off with a maniacal glaze from a possessed Gordon. The half page panel leaves no doubt a change has happened. This is largely due to Wands’ lettering underneath the panel. Once events shift back to the JLA spacestation, a high pace is kept for all the action. It leads to a big conclusion of conflict (for now) via a full page image. The conclusion eases readers back with a more grounded approach to the final page. Once there, a full page panel reveals that the fight is far from over versus the classic DC villain.

FINAL POINT: 9.4

Batman and Superman must fight overwhelming darkness in this initial story chapter. Waid’s writing creates a timeless tale of adventure and action. Gutiérrez constructs the energetic images perfectly fitting for a tale of this level. This series always maintains a high level of storytelling that can’t be missed!

RESURGENCE OF THE VALIANT UNIVERSE #1 by Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, Fred Van Lente, AJ Ampadu, Guillermo Fajardo, Julio Azamor, Lautaro Ftuli, Ludwig Olimba and Ezequiel Inverni (Valiant Comics/Alien Books)

The concept is a very engaging one. Dealing with the notion of immortality puts Dr. Silk in a polarizing position. It also challenges the heroes on a different level. The sub-plot with Chris and his experience makes a run to steal the show. Seeing events play out on a human level (so to speak) throws a new perspective in play. How Silk is winning over the public with his claims proves to spiral more conflict than he might be bargained for.

Long time Valiant fans will be very excited to see the return of a classic character. How said character’s resurrection will play long term is anyone’s guess but adds to the event feel. Short term, it adds a wildcard into the mix of Silk vs. Ivar (Timewalker). The rest of the event does give time for the key Valiant heroes to get into position. Readers will enjoy the interaction as tensions slowly begin to wear away. The close offers a good landing spot for where things lead next as there is much left to work out along the way.

Fajardo and Azamor split art duties for this initial chapter. There is a fair amount of panels that feature the heroes in their natural state of fighting conflict. The initial start with Giann, Tara and Savage sets a solid pace for the rest of the heroes to follow along with.

The resurrection of a certain Harbinger comes across with a near full page image. It leads into bringing Silk’s vision to the masses. Azamor’s art provides a contrast in style. It helps to break up the timelines, giving Chris’s story time to grow. The closing act brings the heroes together long enough to start building on how to handle events. X-O’s lead into the next chapter concludes a very steady issue on its way to announce Valiant is back.

FINAL POINT: 8.1

Valiant’s event of 2024 lays a solid foundation behind a strong ethical theme. The writing shows off both sides of Silk’s actions, bringing both readers and leaders on board. The art captures much of the heroic moments that come with a crossover of this magnitude. If there was ever a time to start or jump back into Valiant, the time is now!

C.O.W.L. 1964 #2 (BLACK MARKET NARRATIVE/IMAGE COMICS)

The “Chicago Organized Workers League” or C.O.W.L. have survived due to the maneuvering of Geoffrey Warner (The Grey Raven). It has not be without strings attached. Dirty Dealings and murdering mobster Camden Stone tops a very seedy list. Two years after Stone’s death, Warner has big plans but sins of the past appear to be coming back to haunt.

C.O.W.L. 1964 #2 by Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel, Rod Reis and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou (Black market narrative/Image Comics) continues its distinct look at the world of superheroes.

Let’s take a closer look at how the story’s shaping up.

Keeping his head above water has always been a trait of Geoffrey Warner. His dealings with Stone have now become public due to a possible witness to his crimes. The writing shows his calmness tested to hold onto control. This becomes apparent at the Unity Fund Gala. When other attendees start to gossip, Warner hits them with a defiant line before leaving the party. It is a perfect reflection of how he refuses to surrender an ounce of ground to get what he wants.

The other standout character in this chapter is Reginald Davis (Blaze). His conversation assessing Warner’s claims brings forth a sense of worry as their work might be crumbling down. Davis investigating the lone witness comes with confrontation on a few fronts. Aside form the action, the return of a certain character caps off more intrigue to the fate of one Geoffrey Warner.

Reis brings out the many sides of Warner throughout the issue. From the opening press conference, Warner is depicted as the typical politician. This quickly changes in the private meeting with Davis. The panels pour with the tension and urgency to handle the allegations.

It boils over to the Gala. The panels showcases the gossip and Warner’s response set the tone for the rest of the chapter. Skylancer’s encounter is filled with fast paced action. The pages are an easy connection to readers and their reward is a shocking conclusion. The closing act is capped off with a full page image that leaves no doubt that things will be forever changed for C.O.W.L.

FINAL POINT: 9.1

The plans built by Geoffrey Warner start to crack at the seams with another excellent chapter for the sequel series. Strong writing from Higgins and Siegel tear away at Warner’s vision. Capped off by the fantastic art and lettering by Reis and Otsmane-Elhaou, the return of C.O.W.L. continues to impress with its’ more mature themes.

FALLING IN LOVE ON THE PATH TO HELL #4 (IMAGE COMICS)

Asami and MacRaith. The most unlikely lovers in comics. After both wind up in Purgatory, the Samurai and Cowboy start developing a surprising bond. Mohan is the current ruler of this domain. With an army of savages behind him, the two have to find a way to survive or get swallowed up in the insanity around them.

Falling in Love on the Path to Hell #4 by Gerry Duggan, Garry Brown, Chris O’Halloran, and Joe Sabino picks up after MacRaith found out the punishment for “failing to comply” to Mohan’s orders.

Duggan concludes the opening arc on a steady note. MacRaith continues to display many sides to his character. After surviving (due to Asami’s help) the disturbing attack, he becomes more driven to handle Mohan once and for all. Like any good plan in Hell, his scheming fails. This leads into a very unique surprise as MacRaith winds up in a new landscape.

From here, Duggan solidifies what has been building for the opening set. Asami lets her guard down to both MacRaith and the readers. This comes on the heels of seeing some of her demons make their appearance. Pacing builds up the change in direction as the close brings the pair one thing that they’ve been severely lacking: something to believe in.

Brown and O’Halloran gives readers great images as the story leads into new horizons. The backstory of Asami conveys her trauma as she relives a painful memory. MacRaith’s ploy against Mohan is brought to the forefront with no punches pulled. This leads into a fantatsic full page image as things defer from course in a monster way.

A two page splash hits as MacRaith’s journey leads him into a new world. The coloring and brightness lead readers to make their own calls on where things go from here. Once back on the “normal” playing field, A full page splash delivers on what has been climbing since issue one. This all leads to a strong closing page. With Sabino’s lettering popping off, a smaller panel of Asami speaks volumes concludes the arc with many possibilities following.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

The love story of Asami and MacRaith heads into its next phase with an excellent closing for the inital arc. Duggan’s writing takes the pair into new and unpredicatible territory. Brown and the art team construct a gritty and sometimes hopeful landscape for love against the odds.

On the outside, everything might seem normal. It’s a completely different story inside the gates of Paradise Gardens. The crisis of the gardens proves add more layers to an ever evolving mystery surrounding Loo. Knowing she is being kept at bay by fellow staff members keeps readers guessing. The pacing of the story allows time for that to build while other events take center stage. None have a greater impact than the fallout of Dr. Zerc’s manipulations behind the scenes.

The writing doesn’t tip off too much involving the “big bad”. Zerc comes across as desperate, yet cut-throat to achieve his plans. The health of the Gardens is on;y an afterthought in this case. Allowing Loo to come and save the day casts her and her abilities in a new light. Her showcase leads into a sold closing act. With Zerc digging in deeper, the secrets of Loo may be the make or break point for what has already been a lights-out hit.

Weston and Stewart bring a distinct look to the visuals of the Gardens’ residents. The opening page captures the spirit of the Gardens. It is quiet, reserve and has a bigger story lying in wait. Some of the more “unique” residents continue to steal scenes, assisting the one-liners.

The flashback pages break from the formula. Using black and white shades is an easy segway into the close. Loo letting loose with her abilities comes across as a big event. Each panel carries a big weight and equally important reactions. This flows into the final page where it appears Zerc is ready to make his move.

FINAL POINT: 9.1

The grounds of the Paradise Gardens become caught up in the crossfire of Dr. Zerc. The writing keeps its unparalleled balance of humor and drama on a high level. With strong visuals that mirror the brooding themes, “Paranoid Gardens” hits anothe rbig mark at its’ midway point!

Williamson throws a unique perspective into an already chaotic scenario. For this crisis, readers see Superman cross a line or the greater win. Making Neron the deciding factor plays well for amping up the drama. Its’ fallout dives into Superman’s will to win no matter the cost. This complements the efforts of Lois and company to track him down. The actions also feature both heroes opinions on Magic. It is very well known Superman and Magic do not mix. However, for his partner here, that is her world.

Zatanna is written as challenged to find her identity. The dialogue with her and Supes comes off impactful. She lays out her insecurities and challenges Superman about his Magic ethic stance. This leads into a play when the main antagonist appears. Both heroes make a call which leads into a solid finale. The epilogue brings everything back full circle. One door appears to close but the last page says otherwise and then some.

Campbell presents excellent imagery as the pair enters into the dark side of Magic. The depiction of Neron comes off as everything one would expect when dealing with a devil. This leads into a fantastic two page splash as they travel the Dark Roads. Campbell’s attention to details in this massive piece will have readers glued to the pages.

The latter half of the book is fueled by Superman and Zatanna’s conflicting views. Campbell captures their points of view and drives home the feelings from both. It plays into a solid action sequence before resolving their dilemma. The issue is capped off with a soon to be iconic page of Superman and Lois reuniting. It perfectly brings an end to their quest as they head into the monster crossover finale.

There’s sympathy for a hero, but no devil as the struggles hit a definitive stop for Superman in this chapter. Williamson weaves a debate about magic through conflict with his excellent writing. Campbell continues to impress with the high level imagery. This one will have fans excited as the Man of Steel heads back into the fight for Absolute Power!
