For this entry, the war is almost over! New York City has been caught in the crossfire of a criminal war for months. The only thing standing in defense has been the Amazing Spider-Man and some of Marvel’s street-level heroes. With the war drawing to a head in Central Park, all Hell is about to break loose. Who will be left standing?

Madame Masque has been the focal point for NYC’s gang war. After orchestrating the conflict, Masque is poised to take over the underworld. With Central Park being the location, Masque and her main rival, the Beetle, meet. Surrender is not an option. The battle ensue.

During the melee, Tombstone makes his true intentions known. After working as an uneasy ally to Spidey, he confronts his daughter and clips her wings (literally). Now with the Beetle off the board, can Spider-Man stop the fury of Madame Masque’s army?

This chapter begins with Spidey squaring off with Masque. The unified front of Beetle’s army and Spidey’s friends are holding their own. This is working until someone changes the call. Tombstone tells Beetle’s forces that the alliance is over.

With the shift in numbers, Spidey’ friends are overwhelmed. Count Nefaria blasts Spider-Man with enegry. Joining in the attack is Silvermane. The barrage is too much for Spider-Man. Luckily, some back-up arrives and not at a moment too soon.

Jackpot, Spider-Boy and Luke Cage enter the field! Will it be enough to win?

Readers see how the good guys make a stand to defeat Masque once and for all. Its’ outcome isn’t cut and dry. While the resolution solves a few lingering plots, there is now a bigger threat at hand. The smoke has cleared. One is left standing. The final image lets readers know that there’s still some unfinished business. It’s a chilling farewell to Gang War that still will send shockwaves through Spider-Man’s life for some time to come.

Wells presents a steady pace into Central Park’s last stand. With Tombstone making the call to pull out early, the focus shifts into Spidey and company overcoming huge odds. It is a bit surprising who the back-up was that swung momentum in the good guys favor. Considering there are two relatively new heroes finding their path, it was a bit odd seeing them as the key factors. Granted, Luke Cage does make up a LOT to balance his trio out.

From here, the issue heads into much of what connects readers with Spider-Man. Spidey’s stand-off with Masque plays right into character. The ending is fitting, along with the final act. The parting pages set up a bigger stage later but concludes all on a solid landing.

Romita and company give the big battle a full send-off. There’s an excellent two page spread early featuring the shift of power with Tombstone leaving. This is matched with another great two-page spread when the cavalry arrives.

Even with their masks on, the final stand-off with Masque and Spider-Man still carries a great deal of emotion behind it. The visuals reflect Spidey’s frustrations and anger with his body language. The final act captures the resolutions of the invested parties. None stand out more than the winner of the war. The closing visual leaves a haunting reminder that the war is over…but not forever.

FINAL POINT: 8

The battle of Central Park ends with a clear-cut winner in Spidey’s last chapter of the Gang War crossover. Wells puts the emotional weight on Spidey’s back with solid writing. Romita and the team give the issue that “big fight feel” with some memorable visuals. This will be one for all Spidey fans to check out on New Comic Book day.

Superman has returned from the old west (time travel) to come back to a shocking discovery at LexCorp. Dr. Pharm and Mr. Graft, along with The Chained and an armored Leticia Luthor have attacked. With a cloud of Green kryptonite filling the room, Superman is weakened.

While on the ground, he hears the plans this team has for him. They want to recruit Superman to their Lex Luthor Revenge Squad. The addition would be the ultimate factor in crushing Luthor for his past actions against the group.

Previous, the story focuses on Lena Luthor (Lex’s daughter) consulting the SuperCorp AI about her file. Readers see the cold reaction Lex has towards his child. Lena’s grandmother walks in and discusses what was divulged.

Readers see how the building to Superman’s return went down. From the deadly duo’s initial moves to Letica’s eventual betrayal, the final moves are set in place for Superman’s return. Once he is taken down, there is little options left.

How does Superman survive this situation? The drama ramps as it appears all is lost. Once the final pages begin, readers see why no matter what, few people understand Superman like Lex does. This also applies in reverse as the closing image sets forth a damaging reveal which the Man of Steel’s world may not recover from.

Williamson catches readers up to speed before sending them into a action filled close. The motives of Pharm and Graft have challenged Luthor at every move. Seeing the deep level play to inflict a deep wound hits readers with a unique thought. Seeing their plan unfold proves for an entertaining ride.

The closing points mirrors classic Superman reactions. Its’ fallout is another example of how Williamson refreshes the dynamic between Superman and Luthor for a challenging path forward. The series continues to raise a high bar for all Superman fans to enjoy.

Baldeón and Lokus start off with a strong two page spread with the squad’s “recruitment” of Superman. The dynamic between Letica and Lena varies at multiple times. The visuals use it for a great start to Letica’s eventual turn. The action images later capture Superman truly in his element of fighting. This all leads into a lasting panel setting a dangerous course for the future of Metropolis.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The return home isn’t always welcome for the Man of Steel. The Lex Luthor Revenge Squad makes their final move with Williamson pacing the moves with great writing. Baldeón, Lokus and Maher construct energetic imagery with big reveals in the closing moments of the chapter. This is one Superman story you won’t want to miss.

For this entry, the end is truly near. Anytime DARKSEID appears in DC Comics, fans know that the stakes are grave. This is the case with the current story involving two legendary heroes. A trip to Earth 22 for a rescue mission hasn’t gone exactly as planned. Now, BATMAN and SUPERMAN must find a way to stop Darkseid capturing the Anti-Life equation or it will truly be “KINGDOM COME”.

When a missing apprentice (David Sikela aka Thunderman) is found to be on Earth-22, Batman and Superman attempt to find the young hero and return him home. The planet he is residing on is one longtime DC fans know. It is the home of the legendary series Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross.

Upon arrival, they come face-to-face with a distorted version of their world. GOG is ruling over the land. His protege is the missing Sikela, whom is now known as MAGOG! Gog is planning on leading Earth’s heroes into a war with APOKOLIPS. This is stopped by Batman, Superman and some notable DC heroes.

However, it’s not enough to stop Darseid from entering the fray. Gog has something he wants: a part of the Anti-Life equation.

This issue begins with the shocking looks of the remaining DC heroes. Superman teams up with his Earth-22 counterpart to slow Darkseid down. Batman signals for the others to regroup. The action ramps up as two Kryptonians try the impossible. Their efforts fall short. Other heroes try but fall short as well.

Once the dust settles, Darkseid attempts takes his shot at Gog. The only one left to stop him is Magog! What chance does the young hero have?

Readers see quickly that a choice is made that changes everything. It’s fallout challenges the two title characters more than anyone realizes. This leads into an emotional closing act that divulges many secrets. It’s a fitting conclusion that does proper justice to the original 1996 series. Brace for a highly impactful ending.

There is always a fine line of what defines a hero. With Waid’s first venture into this theme, readers witnessed how a drastic action can cause a spiral out of control. The journey of David Sikela has echoed that idea. The tutelage of Superman vs. Gog gives a backdrop to the presence of Darkseid. Sikela’s action hits readers with a painful picture of the future.

The writing showcases the bond between the World’s finest as well. With the closing act, their friendship support carries the heroes through a dark moment. This leads to a powerful close, circling back to what inspires all heroes: hope.

Mora and Bonvillian cap off events with strong imagery. Right from the start, the image of Darkseid and the heroes’ reaction sets a high bar for the remainder of the chapter. The fight scenes play off as bold and eye-catching each panel. After Sikela’s actions, the reactions of all parties range from shock to anger.

The full page panel of a haunting presence will full grab readers’ attention. This leads into a fantastic full page panel that answers some lingering questions. There is also a two-page spread that pays a great homage to the original source material. The chapter ends on such a high note that fans will want to dive back in just to stare at the art over and over alone.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

The Return to Kingdom Come doesn’t disappoint as the World’s Finest face a threat that hits close to the heart. Waid orchestrates an intense fallout with Mora providing mind-blowing visuals to bring the story to a thunderous close. This issue continues to cement this series’ place as one of (if not) the best superhero book at the LCS each time out.

For this entry, we are checking out the conclusion of the first year of evil in Gotham City. While being locked away by Batman’s own creation, the Dark Knight has a very familiar cell mate. The Joker has been broken and beaten by Failsafe. The question of “How did we get here” has spiraled into a tale of two stories.

One has looked back t the early days of the Clown Prince of Crime. The other is a future with the final battle between the long time enemies. Both have sparked much talk amongst Batman fans. Now arriving at the end, how will Joker’s stories end?

The final form of Evil. That is what Dr. Daniel Captio has created. After his rejection from Bruce Wayne in Batman: The Knight, Captio has come to Gotham to train Joker to be Batman’s ultimate rival. Captio’s work involves training Joker to have multiple personalities to handle situations. This mirrors Batman’s own Zur-En-Arrh. In Joker’s case, there are now three he can play with as needed.

Joker thanks Captio by killing him. Now without any fear holding him back, the reign of terror begins…

Meanwhile in the future, Joker has turned the residents of Gotham into versions of himself. During Batman’s investigation, he finds his Bat Family among the victims. Catwoman has kept them safe. However, Joker has thwarted the good intentions. With the Bat-Family poised to attack, Batman strives to survive.

This issue picks up with the family poised to attack. The older Batman throws all his smoke bombs to escape. With the family loose, trying to save the city looks bleak. It is even bleaker with the Joker in hot pursuit.

Back in the past, Bruce Wayne is hosting a fundraiser for the Gotham Opera. A suspended Jim Gordan calls into Batman informing of the corrupt officers tied to The Red Hood Gang. Commissioner McLeod is currently leading the gang. Gordan sees them making a move after a big drug bust. Taking a risk, he goes into the police station to spy without Batman.

Inside the precinct, Manny Gabris (another Red Hood Gang member) celebrates the big score. With strength in numbers and a plan in place, they look to rob the police station of drugs and evidence.

However, there is someone at the station filing a complaint. A clown with a very vested interest in the two prime members. All it takes is one reckless action by Gabris and all Hell breaks loose.

Readers watch along as all the combustible elements finally explode at the Gotham PD. Joker vs. his old Gang with Jim Gordon caught in the crossfire. How will Gordon last without Batman to help?

As for the future, the final confrontation between Batman and Joker comes to a dramatic finish. Can Gotham be saved or has the Joker accomplished his endgame?

With each conclusion, each question is answered. Both stories conclude on a strong note. The past ends with a lasting moment for the ages. The future ending leaves a question for readers to ponder as they read Joker stories from here on out. It is a fitting bookend for a character who truly defines brilliant insanity.

Zdarsky plays up to Joker’s strengths with this final chapter. In the early days, the evolution of Joker’s planning is in full display. The attack on the former gang hits with precision. Even with the chaos around him, Joker navigates it to connect on his targets. Gordon’s portion with this story stands out as well. The way he thwarts McLeod’s plans is vintage Gordon. It also might play into Joker’s attacks on the Gordon family down the road. The final moments are a great homage to “A Bronx Tale”.

The future story is a great final encounter diving back into the Love/Hate relationship between Batman and Joker. The old rivals know each other so well, yet there is something new learned in this encounter. Zarsky builds this element right to the conclusion. The ending moments leave readers with the parting shot and a new perspective. It’s a fitting conclusion for the closing chess match between the historic rivals.

The art teams showcase the multiple levels to each take. Camuncoli and company make the Gotham PD into a warzone in a short amount of time. Once Garbis makes his move, the imagery reflects the speed of the story. not lost in this is Joker’s laughing and evil smile. This is exemplified with a full page image revealing his true nature to those around him. The sadistic nature of Joker plays through right to the ending. It’s a fitting close as a new chapter begins.

FINAL POINT: 9

The history of the Clown Prince of Crime shines with the closing chapter of Joker: Year One. Zdarsky takes readers into a thrill-ride of dark madness with superb writing. The art teams construct solid action and moody imagery to exemplify Joker’s terror. For anyone who wants to peek inside Joker’s mind, this story needs to be in your collection.

In a Harlem hospital, Spider-Man checks in on Randy Roberston. Randy was one of the first victims of the Gang War. Spidey promises Randy’s father, Robbie, that he will be end this and return. Robbie simply tells him “Get It Done”.

On the rooftop of the hospital are Spidey’s allies in this fight. Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Daredevil, She-Hulk and Tombstone wait for him to join. They know what lies ahead. A trip through hell itself.

Central Park is now the location for the two biggest forces in the war to meet. In one corner, Beetle and her forces. Opposing her is Madame Masque. Masque is the whole reason the war started. It’s fitting she is here in the end. After a final chance to surrender is passed, the time for war has come.

Readers watch as the criminal underworld explodes in broad daylight. Spidey and his friends start to intervene but is it too late? The action never stops at this moment. If you’re looking for a fight, you’ve come to the right chapter.

As the saying goes, all is fair in love and war. The measures to secure victory have no limits. This rings true in the final act. A choice is made that can only lead to dire consequences. The fallout from this could possibly be the tipping point for victory, but at what cost? The final image speaks volumes before capping off events before the big finale looming.

Wells pens the beginning of the book as a somber moment. The writing reflects the toll the war has taken. It also shows the finality of what’s about to come. The image of the heroes on the roof comes across as knowing how huge the stakes are and how deadly it can be to win.

Once the Central Park battle begins, Wells wastes no time getting down to the matter at hand. There are many moving parts involved here. Wells gives Masque and Beetle enough time to connect with readers with their motives. Their dialogue conveys the sense of desperation to win. The closing dialogue will be the most memorable from this issue. Considering the personal nature involved, it felt as a “good-bye” more than anything else. It brought the issue to a nice landing spot before the war ramps up its’ finale next issue.

Romita and company leave a lasting imprint of the emotions involved. The near full page image of the good guys at the hospital showed the gravity of the war. The facial reactions were cold and focused on what was forthcoming.

The panels for Central Park built up the tense atmosphere to a breaking point. Once the first show was fired, the frantic action was in full swing. This is capped off with a great two page spread in the latter portion of the book. This leads into a more quiet moment in the final pages. The panels reflect the personal struggle involved and a choice made. Great full page panel to conclude things for now. It’s a great lead for readers as they prep themselves for the war’s conclusion.

The final battle has arrived! With Spider-Man’s allies the only thing standing in between Masque and Beetle, it’s anyone’s guess who survives. Wells sets things in motion with solid writing. Romita and the team bring the high-level fighting to life with an emotional pause when needed. Expect a monster finale from the events of this chapter.

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X #2 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, the last stand of the X—Men continues on via Marvel! Last we watched, Orchis have almost achieved perfect victory. With Cyclops preparing for execution leading numerous losses, the remaining x-family try finding a way to turn things around. It seems as luck might be turning their way with an unlikely pairing striking Orchis in space!

FALL OF THE HOUSE OF X #2 by Gerry Duggan, Lucas Werneck, Bryan Valenza, and Travis Lanham brings the action with Mutantkind’s finest warriors leading its charge!

Let’s take a closer look at how things shape up!

Dr. Statis and M.O.D.O.K. sit inside Orchis’ space station. Thinking that their plans are succeeding, the mood is high. This is evident in Statis words describing impending objects coming at the station. Readers quickly see how wrong they. at is no mere object. That is Polaris wielding a Celestial skull?!

The skull attacks the ship while Polaris on-boards. This leads to more surprises as Polaris unleashes her forces onto the Orchis agents. Unleash might be the key word as Polaris lets loose a pack of the BROOD onto the ship.

Meanwhile, an Orchis ship is returning to the station with some precious cargo. Wolverine has been captured and the crew thinks they’ve jumping in the right fight. Little do they know they’ve been set up by Colossus, Nightcrawler and Wolverine!

The action picks up as the trio lay waste to the troops. Once they connect with Polaris, their mission is clear: Stop Statis and save Firestar.

On Earth, the rest of the X-Family have their own missions to win. Everyone needs to play their part if there’s any chance to save Mutantkind.

Will they succeed? The dangers loom at every turn. Readers have a thrill-ride in their hands as more moves are made. Judging by the closing moments, a shocking twist might be the game changer moment the X-Men needed or had to avoid at all costs.

In my opinion, this felt like vintage X-Men storytelling (and that’s a BIG win)! Duggan packs in a great deal of action for this chapter. The dueling attack on Orchis in space makes some exciting sequences. Bringing Polaris into the battle in such a dramatic manner set the tone for the fight perfectly.

The side plots moved their stories forward without being lost in the shuffle. Juggling the large cast, Duggan made sure all got their time to progress. There are quite a few panels that fans can’t help but get amped up about. The closing act throws a solid swerve into the mix leading to a very intriguing close.

Werneck and Valenza construct big action throughout this issue. The debut of Polaris into the mix gets a proper full page treatment. When Wolverine gets unleashed, the coloring with the blood flying speaks volumes while being subtle. It’s throwback fighting with a classic lineup.

The interactions with the fellow mutants play very well to the reader. Emma Frost’s panel in the book is perfectly suited for her character. There’s also a Juggernaut portion that fans should rave about as well. The closing moments tie back to a previous portion of the overall story. It caps off the desperate times that the heroes live through. The closing panels add another dynamic into the mix that will be interesting to see how it plays out.

The final stand of the X-Men goes heavy with a classic feel that fans won’t want to miss. Duggan drives vintage elements of the X-Family with the great writing. Werneck and company build electric imagery fitting for the fight of their lives. With the stakes at hand, there’s no better time to watch the fall unfold.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #6 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we’re heading back to Gotham City High School! Last time we saw the father and son duo of Bruce and Damian Wayne, they were closing in on leads involving the newest bat rogue: Shush. The search has led Damian to enroll in High school and Brice being a supportive parent. All the while, there appears to be another threat lurking in the shadows.

The story opens up with Damian walking readers through their latest observations. A student named Zach has drawn their attention. Watching him be a normal kid in school is one thing. Watching him outside of work is a whole different story.

Zach has become connected to Victor Zsasz. Zsasz is a serial killer notorious for carving in dashes on his own body for his kills. Zach believes Zsasz is his father.

Batman and Robin have had their eyes on Zsasz as he is up for an appeal at the courts. As the pair watches Zsasz be led into the courthouse, an explosion happens. From the smoke emerges a surprise masked figure.

With an escape attempt in full swing, the dynamic duo crash the party. How does Zsasz and his ‘son” fare?

Readers see a great mix of action and “family” drama play out. Its’ fallout leads to their original case at hand. On the way, the pair share a moment that is long overdue. Considering how the past few months have been, it is a sight that has been sorely needed.

The final act shifts events into a new direction. Can the pair solve the latest roadblock? If the closing page is any indication, they look to have some unlikely help from Damian’s past. Get ready as the series drops another great chapter.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #6 by Joshua Williamson, Nikola Čižmešija, Rex Lokus and Steve Wands (DC COMICS - Cover: Kael Ngu)

Williamson gives readers another fun mix of family drama and action. The story with Zach and Zsasz was a solid twist and companion piece to the Shush storyline. The interaction between “father and son” played out as predicted, but worked for a great segway.

Once the story heads back on its’ original path, Williamson ties in some excellent non-hero moments. With how strained Bruce and Damian have been, the writing shows the series’ strength with these segments. Readers will have their emotions pulled at with this break point. Following that, the final act presents a solid build for next issue and how THAT character will play into the case.

Čižmešija and Lokus finish out their stint on B&R with a high note. The full page visual of Zsasz makes a big first impression. This leads into some great action panels. The two page spread with Batman and Robin entering the escape attempt will be a huge win with readers.

The emotions run high for “both” father and sons during the chapter as well. The Wayne conversation is lead in with another great two page spread with an insight to Damian. The following panels pour out the honest reactions of Bruce. It’s these types of moments that make this series such a hit. The closing panel welcomes the returning character to the story in grand fashion. The full page image is upstaged by a smaller panel of Batman’s reaction. It’s a solid way to end this chapter and lead right into the next phase of “shush”.

The mystery of Shush gets overtaken by the emotional family dynamic of Gotham’s most famous family. Superb writing by Williamson guides the pair through an unlikely confrontation. Čižmešija and Lokus construct the powerful bond of father and son with imagery that doesn’t miss. Make sure to check this one out on NCBD!

Last issue, readers witness the Joker returning to Gotham after the A.C.E. Chemicals accident. Reclaiming his place in the underworld hasn’t been easy. With each turning page, Joker continues to lose himself to his growing madness. This builds to a surprise offer from someone wo sees something in the broken man.

Meanwhile, the future is very bleak. With Joker escaped from Arkham, Gotham City is dead. What lives in its’ place is a city infested with Jokerized residents.

This chapter begins with Batman facing off with the infected residents. The narration leads thoughts of fatigue and desperation. Batman saves someone with a sedative but its’ not enough. His road lead him back to where the nightmare began years ago. Batman is heading to A.C.E. Chemicals.

Back in the past, Batman and Alfred are performing an autopsy in the BatCave. The results explain the skin of the victim. It turned White instantly with the chemicals discovered inside him. These findings jolt Batman’s thoughts back to the Red Hood incident.

As for the Joker, he is mulling the offer from one of Bruce Wayne’s trainers (previously seen in Batman: The Knight). Time is not on his side as Joker’s re-appearance brings some unwanted attention.

Readers brace as both stories head into full speed with showcasing the madness behind the man. Both tales spin into dangerous territory as the past walks readers through the metamorphism of pure evil. This runs parallel wit a future dying of the light.

The final act brings a chilling end to one phase of Joker’s life and the birth of something even more sinister. Get ready for an issue that will definitely have fans talking!

There is much to process with this latest issue. Zdarsky takes readers n a deep dive into the creation of the levels of evil which make up the Joker. In the past, seeing the motives behind “breaking Joker” is a layered sees of events. There is a sense of a twisted reflection of Bruce Wayne’s early years. The results flood the final act. It’s a perfect ending as it redefines what fans already knew: There is much more to the Clown Prince of Crime than Jokes.

The future story sets up for the final face-off between the two enemies. Zdarsky paces this brilliantly. With noted cameos making their appearance, it ties back to the themes that make Joker so dangerous. It plays out at a more methodical pace. The pacing allows for the shocking panels to lave a huge impression while hiding the fear behind them.

The art teams stand out with bringing the fear to the pages. The Camuncoli past story captures the slow building of the Joker into his final form. There are a few noteworthy action panels which demonstrates how much the Joker has grown his skills. This ties into the emotional reaction of his learnings. It is all capped off by a solid final full page shot that prepares fans for what’s next.

The story beings with the Joker on an operating table. The one overseeing the autopsy: Batman. the narration walks readers through Batman’s thoughts. The talk is frank as he tries figuring out the trick to his “immortality”. A pill made of the same substance of the original Red Hood Helmet is the key. Bats claims the Red Hood made the Three Jokers. The questions begin to build on what else lies behind the laughter.

The story shifts to Joker’s perspective falling into the pit of A.C.E. chemicals on that fateful night. The fallout creates the iconic shot fans know from the Killing Joke. However, in this instance, there are Three Jokers. The trio begins to start attacking each other. A voice is leading thoughts of trying to remain sane while the unimaginative reality is paying out.

Once the fighting ends, there is one Joker laughing.

From here, the chapter begins a true decent into madness. The early days of post chemical spill walk readers into a man loosing their grip on reality. The beginnings of Joker’s re-emergence shows readers a slow build into reclaiming his place on Gotham’s landscape. The ending at this brings up a shocking twist o this portion of the book.

Meanwhile, another story builds around Batman and Joker in a future Arkham setting. What transpires there screams true terror as a final image sets forth a fate that appears worse than death. This is the Joker’s world and we all are about to live it….

Zdarsky breaks up the origin into two strong segments. The first dives into the world of Zero Year. Seeing the slow fall into his fragile psyche, Joker gives an almost sympathetic aura as he tries figuring out his next moves. Once he settles into his routine, the story leads into a familiar realm. The unpredictable nature shines through as Joker tries finding his footing in a brand new world. It’s a very interesting ending for this portion.

The future story ties nicely into the origin as Joker’s future is bleak The writing here reflects a broken Batman who’s still struggling to find answers. The story heads into a hellish reality. This will eventually tie back into the initial conversation of cellmates. Until then, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Art duties are split between two teams for this story. Camuncoli captains the early years half of the origin, while Sorrentino leads the future.

In the initial days, Camuncoli gives readers a lid homage to the classic Killing Joke laughing image. This leads into a full page emergence of the one true Joker. The following panels reflect Joker’s constant battle within, trying to hang on to any source of normalcy. The art continues this pacing very steadily. Fans are also gifted a full page shot of Batman in the night sky. They can see why Joker was enamored with fear during this sight.

Journey into a haunting past and future with Batman’s biggest foe pulling the strings. Zdarsky pens an absolutely engaging tale, blending tension and terror. The art teams shine showing the many faces of evil with its’ vivid imagery. This will be one Batman story fans won’t want to miss.

The chapter opens with a flashback towards the apparent death of Vladimir Sokov aka John Ladd. Ladd was Scott’s lover during their time on Project: Crimson. The narration follows as the red energy that pulled him underwater. This leads to the danger now standing as the Red Lantern.

The saga shifts to Bobruisk, Russia in 1923. A young Ladd is leaving his home. His father is yelling in the distance. The narration reflects feelings of resentment and determination. The determination is what drives Ladd to join the Russian army. After a general chooses him for spy training, his first assignment centers around a weapon.

This is no ordinary weapon. Readers find out its the myth of the “Crimson Flame Of Death”. With this in the possession of the U.S. Military, Ladd is assigned to infiltrate and steal the weapon. The unknowing accomplice to this goal: Alan Scott.

The story spirals through the lies weaved by Ladd. Using the affections of Scott as a decoy, readers see what levels Ladd went to for this mission. Its’ fallout is even more intense with the emotional wounds re-opened for Scott.

Get ready for a personal and highly combustible sequence to unfold as the Lanterns have laid out all their cards on the table. Or have they? The closing image proves all is fair in love and war with a shocking conclusion. Brace for impact with this one!

The peaks and lows that Sheridan puts the title character through with Ladd’s origin hits strong with readers. The complexity of his character actions leads Ladd into a deception that comes close to breaking Scott completely. This pours into a reaction that jumps right of the page.

Following this moment is where readers see Scott start rebounding from Ladd’s tormenting barrage. There are quiet moments that reflect the love once shared between Scott and Ladd before leading back into the heroic play of Scott. Sheridan has kept tis story grounded around emotion and that is a theme the resonates with each panel, right to the last shot. Another great read.

Tormey and the art team guide readers through a focused look at the birth of a spy. The flsback panls break each important moment down for an easy connect with readers. The focus sways from Ladd’s mission to the blind deception played out under Scott’s caring soul.

This builds towards a full page shot of Scott’s rage boiling over. The flowing images dive the action into an intimate moment where Scott appears to get the upper hand. All this leads to a strong final full page panel indicating to where Scott’s heart lies now after the truth is revealed.

Amanda Waller always has a plan. With the rise of the Titans in the Justice League’s place, Waller sets forth a movement which spells nothing good for the DCU heroes.

Using Doctor Hate to manipulate Beast Boy’s form as Starro, Waller has unleashed a public attack on Earth. People are turning into animal hybrids. Even with the efforts of the heroes to try stopping the mayhem, they are only having small success. As the public watches, Waller works in the shadows to push her own agenda.

Using a hesitant Chester Runk (aka Chunk), who can unleash a “black hole” opening to another dimension, Waller teleports him inside Logan’s unconscious gigantic husk. The use of his powers kills him and Logan.

As this chapter opens, the heroes trying to stop Logan pay their respects to their fallen ally. One hero isn’t in the mood to grieve. Raven, fellow Titan and Gar’s girlfriend notes that someone else was pulling some strings and she intends to give them some payback.

On Earth, a press conference is taking place in Washington. The president is acknowledging the actions of the Bureau of Sovereignty for taking out Logan. He also brings the mastermind behind the attack into the public eye. Waller addresses the public and sells the story of protection from the superheroes.

Readers see her paint the picture of Runk as a noble citizen risking it all for their safety. With the ploy of swaying public opinion to her cause, Waller drops another bombshell with her next plan of attack.

How desperate is Waller willing to go? Readers find out quickly that there is a reason Waller is one of the most feared forces in the entire DC Universe. How will the heroes react?

As the playing field is now set, it’s race against time for the Titans as Waller’s plans are in full motion. The closing act gives more clarity onto where things head now, but the final image sets forth an unseen dynamic. With the stakes being raised higher, all bets are off to the fate of the DCU after this event.

If readers weren’t sure why Amanda Waller is such an imposing force in DC Comics, Taylor devotes an ample amount of page time to drive that point home. The writing reflects how driven she is without a shred of emotion affecting her. Once readers realize what she’s planning on doing, it brings a sense of fear and shock to the levels to secure victory.

There is a conversation involving Nightwing and Waller that sets up an ultimate chess match of good and evil. The dialogue involved hits multiple points with one verbal jab that goes for a knockout. The rest of the issue focuses on reacting to Waller’s moves. This builds into an emotionally charged closing pages. The final panel sets up many questions as Taylor is pulling out more shocks to usher this event into its’ next phase.

The art duties are spilt for this tale. Reis brings the coldness of Waller’s address to the pages with a intimidating feel. the mannerisms in which she drives her points will send a clear message to the audience about the way she is willing to conduct business. This counters Raven’ reflections of losing her boyfriend due to Waller.

There are a few action sequences to break up the heavy dialogue. It adds more to the confrontation in the latter portion of the book. Once that moment kicks off, readers begin to see the start of a true test of wills. This all leads to a shocking parting image which leaves many questions. With the new dynamic involved, it is anyone’s guess where Waller’s plans take readers next.

With Taylor’s unapologetic approach to Waller’s vision leading the way, readers will get caught up in the creative team’s positioning of key players with their strong artwork. With the fate of the DCU now in the crossfire, readers can’t afford to miss this story.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #42 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, the battle for New York City is at a breaking point. With everyone staking their claim, the criminal underworld power play has now spilled into he streets. With innocent lives at risk, Spider-Man leads a charge of NYC’s heroes to stop the bloodshed.

Business is never supposed to be personal but with the families of Tombstone and the Kingpin involved, the battle just went to a whole other level.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #42 by Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr, Scott Hanna, Marcio Menyz and Joe Caramagna deals with the fallout of Wilson Fisk’s entrance into the war. Let’s see who’s still standing after last issue’s cliffhanger.

Once Wilson Fisk arrived on the scene, The momentum the unlikely alliance of Spider-Man, She-Hulk & Tombstone had slowly started fading. Fisk’s son, The Rose made a power play against The Beetle, Tombstone’s daughter. During their confrontation, Fisk made it known he had won this round. This alluding to Beetle being taken off the board.

As the confusion mounts, readers see that Fisk’s plan wasn’t to kill the Beetle. It was to remove The Rose from the fight. With his outlook on these kinds of wars, Fisk knows what levels are needed to win and he has no intention of his family to venture further with this current situation.

Kingpin and his forces leave the scene, but no without dropping a key piece of information to Tombstone. He tells him the war isn’t for New York City. Fisk claims it was an attack on the Maggia by Madame Masque. Who says there is no honor amongst thieves?

Claiming victory, the Beetle makes plans to advance further. However, there is another party interested in talking about her moves: Madame Masque. What spirals from this moment puts an action in place that will be a defining moment in the conflict. As the final images are witnessed, the tension can’t get any higher leading into next issue.

Wells sets up a nice bait and switch with Fisk’s actions in this chapter. Knowing the ramifications of a conflict like this, Fisk isn’t willing to lose his son. The change of heart is one that may catch readers off-guard. It’s also one to watch as Fisk could be waiting in the wings to dismiss whoever is left standing in the end.

The conversation between Masque and Beetle gives a greater insight to both. Their histories have forged their present. Both show an unwillingness to back down. Being so close to victory, readers can sense how desperate both will go to win. The final act brings everything to a fever pitch with a dramatic set-up for the next round. With the war soon ending, expect major fireworks next time.

Romita, Hanna and Menyz balnace out the drama with small dashes of humor in key moments. The subtle talk with Kingpin and Typhoid Mary adds to the new outlook Kingpin has. The reaction of Spider-man is priceless and honest. This leads into Fisk’s parting words impacting Tombstone with great uncertainty. The body language in these panels speak volumes.

The conversation between Beetle and Masque reflects the emotional tolls of their past. The facial expressions leave no doubt in the reader’s eyes of the intensity of their drives to win the fight. This all leads into a stunning two page spread to drop a big exclamation point on events heading into the next chapter.

The drive to emerge from a father’s shadow leads this chapter into a showdown for the ages. Wells takes readers into the battle with an emotionally driven tale. Romita and the creative team bring out the determination and unbreakable will for victory that will push the war into a dangerous direction.

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #23 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast.

For this entry, “Kingdom Come” has become a reality for a pair of iconic superheroes. With this current story arc, BATMAN and SUPERMAN embarked on a simple rescue mission. What they got instead is a nightmarish scenario that longtime DC Comics fans know all too well. Considering the events of last issue, time is running out on any chance to save this world from a fate no one deserves.

On Earth-22, there is one ruler: COG! He has taken on an apprentice: David Sikela aka Thunderman. Cog gives him a new name: MAGOG. The name means “Gateway”. Magog is imperative to his plans of leading the heroes of Earth into a war on APOKOLIPS! Cog sells the dream of divine ascension following him into battle. Little does anyone know, this is all a ruse for something more evil.

With Sikela’s powers used to fuel this trip, Cog is on the brink of success. Luckily, his plans are interrupted by an unlikely group.

Batman and Superman are joined by their Earth-22 counterparts, who have been swayed to see through Cog’s lies. With the Batmen focusing their attack on Sikela, The Supermen take aim at Cog! The battles become intense as one refuses to see the truth while another is blind from his own delusions.

Readers bare witness to battles fitting of the stakes. Even with a major turning point, can the heroes find a way to win? Judging by the final page, there is a whole other level of danger that just entered the game of good vs. evil.

Even with all the action, Waid keeps things geared around Sikela’s destined path. The initial moments with Cog selling his plan creates a sense of uncertainty with the young follower blindly absorbing the lies. Once the heroes arrive, the shift in the story is undeniable.

The Supermen showcase the unending hope synonymous with the Man of Steel. Even in the face of danger, the unending hope never stalls. Meanwhile, Batman trying to reason with Sikela are moments that will stick with the readers. The end results provide an aura of excitement leading into the shocking final page. There’s always a high level of writing with this series and much for fans to enjoy.

Few come near the artistic heights of action like Dan Mora. The heroes make a dramatic entrance with a full page panel. From here, the pace never slows down. The art mirrors the rage and emotions with trying to stop Cog at all costs. In between all the fighting, the close up’s of “Magog” prove how Batman’s words are just as sharp as his strikes.

The fallout results one epic two page spread starting the next round of conflict. Mora and Bonvillain bring an end to a fight with a superb full page. The lettering of Wands ends events with a huge exclamation point. That said, the closing page will have readers talking and singing the praises of the creative team. It is no wonder why this series gets the accolades it does every time a new chapter drops.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

With time slipping away, a final attack is launched. the World’s Finest are the only thing standing between life and death on Earth-22. The question is: will it be enough? Waid provides the foundation with emotional writing. Paired with the dynamic visuals of Mora, Bonvillian and Wands, and all shall be revealed in another excellent chapter.

SUPERMAN #10 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the past is the present with a DC Icon. Recovering form his injuries sustained against Sam Stryker aka The Chained, SUPERMAN Wastes no time heading into action. However, during an encounter with Marilynn Moonlight and Mr. Graft, the Man of Steel is sent into the past. Readers see the Man of Steel trying to deal truth, justice and a better tomorrow in the old wild west!

The issue begins with with a frantic chase to find out what happened to Superman. In Supercorp, Lois Lane, mercy Graves and Lena Luthor are trying to sort things out. Lex Luthor can hear them and gives his thoughts. Suddenly, an alarm goes off. With danger knocking at the door of the building, Superman might not save the day in this timeline….

Meanwhile in the past, Supes and Marilynn ride their horses across the open plains. Their destination is a shocking one. Readers see the pair arrive on the scene of a slaughter. Travelers are lying dead. Their wagons destroyed. A crime has been committed. This might sound like a standard old West story, but its anything but. The weapons used were lasers.

The culprit is an old Superman foe who’s more than willing to stake his claim as the fastest draw in the West. With how weakened Superman is from his previous fight, there might be a different outcome for this rogue.

Readers see that the Man of Tomorrow is ready to fight for justice in the past. Luckily he has some help with Marilynn. The question becomes: will it be enough? The answer gives more clarity to how timeless the character is. Moonlight does get ample time to connect with readers on her story before the final act shifts gears. Time does run out on the closing pages as a new danger has emerged that poses another question offsetting the current stat quo of the Last Son of Krypton.

Even displaced through time, Williamson keeps Superman grounded in the ideals he exemplifies. The investigation into the robbery is halted by a selfless act. This only makes the inevitable confrontation even more impactful. The traditional superhero themes beam across Clark’s actions.

Once the spotlight shifts to Moonlight, it gives the readers a deeper connection to the character as her story has only just begun. The closing act throws a big curveball to where things are heading. This is something this series does frequently and it’s always a win for the readers.

The art leaves a lasting impression on readers throughout this journey. There is a gorgeous two page image of Superman and Monnlight riding through the plains. It lets the moment sink in with readers about how this isn’t just another Superman tale.

The confrontation with the main villain is also a gift to fans with another two page spread conveying the emotions of the challenge. The detailed time on Moonlight connects her story with the audience, leaving more for the next encounter. After an iconic vision of Superman doing what he does best, the closing moments ramp up towards a final image that leaves readers wondering where we go from here.

The Man of Tomorrow searches for truth and justice in the past with a conclusion that simply hits the bullseye. Fantastic writing with amazing visuals bring out the best of DC’s franchise hero as this current series scores another huge win.

RISE OF THE POWERS OF X #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT - 2024)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this edition, the Krakoan Era’s last stand begins via Marvel Entertainment. As the era started with two series (House of X/Powers of X), it concludes with another pair of stories that will redefine the Mutant age. In the present, the Mutants have to deal with the Fall of the House. As for the future, they need to deal with the Rise of Powers.

Rise of the Powers of X #1 by Kieron Gillen, R.B. Silva, David Curiel, Clayton Cowles sets the stage for the X-Men’s final attempt to stop Nimrod once and for all. Let’s dive in and see what’s happening now.

Ten years in the future, Nimrod and Omega sentinel are standing over a fallen diamond Emma Frost with destruction all around them. With Sentinel’s help, one fate has been avoid. Nimrod is ready to crown victory but Sentinel has other thoughts. With little resistance left, Can the X-Men find another way to win?

Meanwhile, Gambit and Mystique are following the plans of Professor X at the Henry Gyrich Memorial Detention Center. Knowing Emma has fallen, the pair play their part. It’s not without a fan moment that is fitting considering their family history. With a noble sacrifice, both Gambit and Mystique are dead but their mission accomplished.

The information they were sent to get was worth the sacrifices if it means an end to the hell they live in. It has been transferred to Charles Xavier. Professor X is camped out at the broken S.W.O.R.D station in space. Leading a team comprised of Iron Man (An A.I. Version of Tony Stark), ShadowTiger (Kate Pryde), Captain Krokoa (Kamala Khan) and Wolverine, Xavier sends them to Phobos with a simple mission: Find Mr. Sinister who’s being held there.

With a final launch, the heroes make their way to Phobos. Nimrod and company are in pursuit to intervene. What comes next will challenge fate. It’s fallout transcends back to the present. With time running out, choices are made and a big revelation of how things could end. The closing moment will have fans talking as the end is finally near.

From the initial page, Gillen establishes the grave stakes involved with no hesitation. Nimrod’s blind assumption of victory plays well with Sentinel’s worry of failure.

The fighting spirit of the X-Men shines through each scene they’re in. The personal moment with Gambit and Mystique’s final goodbye is perfect for fans that have questioned her feeling about her son-in-law.

The latter portion of the book dives into Xavier’s last play knowing what failure brings. His team of X-Men are aware of the stakes and the writing mirrors their will to win or die. Wolverine has some great lines before leading into a huge moment in the book.

The fallout of the event plays off well as the story transitions back to present time. The ultimate option is a stunning one but shows at what lengths Xavier is willing to descend to for the betterment of Mutant-Kind.

Silva and Curiel construct a hellish environment fitting of Nimrod’s terror. The opening full page makes a big splash as Nimrod stands in the center of the aftermath of his work. The final moments of Gambit and Mystique work to give readers an emotional hit before diving into their final calls.

The Phobos panels and fallout give the issue a heavy aura as the event is that catastrophic if Nimrod wins. there is a great mix of full or near-full page panels that exemplify to gravity of the situation. It’s fallout in present time shows the wear this all has had on the survivors. Knowing what Xavier’s back-up plan is, the closing image is strongly detailed as there is no turning back from what’s next.

The fate of the future lies in the past with a solid start to the end of Mutantkind’s days. With layered writing backed up by spectacular visuals, Xavier leads a desperate attempt to save the world. Will the ends justify the means?

WOLVERINE #41 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT)

For this entry, the X-Men world is in disarray. The end of the Krakoan era has started. The utopia is gone. In its’ ashes stands uncertainty and chaos. If it’s chaos in the Mutant World, chances are SABRETOOTH isn’t far behind.

The vicious warrior was banished to the pit of Krokoa for disobeying the rules about killing humans. With the fall of the island, he is now free and focused on revenge against his most hated rival.

Wolverine #41 by Benjamin Percy, Victor LaValle, Geoff Shaw, Cory Smith, Oren Junior, Alex Sinclair and Cory Petit kicks off the “most violent Wolverine story ever told”. Let’s take a closer look and see how the war’s first shot is fired.

The issue begins with Wolverine stalking Sabretooth. Wolvie is clawed to the ceiling of Orchis Station Five. The monologue walks readers through the plan to strike. Once he leaps, Wolverine quickly realizes he walked right into a trap.

Sabretooth looks up from killing what appears to be other X-Men. As he holds Wolverine by the throat, it is revealed that this isn’t Logan. This “Wolverine” is “Camo”, the Sabretooth of Earth 33441. The setting is Sabretooth standing in the center of a bloody fighting pit. Other Sabretooths from other multiverses sit and watch as Victor Creed of 616 holds court. He is preparing the army he has acquired for an attack on Krokoa.

Meanwhile on Earth at the North Pole, Black Tom Cassidy picks up wind of a Stark Sentinel attack on Krokoa. Kid Omega takes off to handle the threat solo. Once he arrives, readers quickly find out there’s a welcome party for him that makes a bold statement.

How will Wolverine deal with the oncoming assault? Being cut off from the rest of the X-World, Wolvie has never been more alone in his thoughts. Can he pull it together to stop what Sabretooth is planning? If the final image in any indication, the “best at what he does” might not be enough to what is coming…..

Pearcy and LaValle brings out the unhinged evil of Sabretooth with this initial entry. The viciousness displayed leaves no doubt of how much of a threat he is. Add the creative idea of tapping into the multiverse of versions of himself and fans need to brace for impact. The first attack is dealt with precision. It plays more into an underlying theme displayed by the legendary X-Man.

The writing shows Wolverine in a reflective light. Seeing Krokoa fall affects him in a somber and anxious way. The interactions with the other characters in the North Pole show a sense of “goodbye” as the end is finally drawing near. This all changes as Sabretooth makes his presence felt with the closing moments. It’s a disturbing idea to create but is needed to show how deadly this game will be between the two.

Shaw, Smith and Junior bring the carnage to life with the opening salvo. The scenes with Sabretooth “teaching” the others his plan makes a bold statement. The brutality shown holds nothing back to the readers. No better example than with the “celebration” of the first attack. It’s a disturbing full page picture that leads to more gruesome panels.

The moments when Wolverine banters with his fellow teammates and family show a different look to him. This more humbling panels only add more fuel to Sabretooth’s plans. The final page is a shocking image that sets a high tempo for things to come.

The first die is cast as the bloodiest feud in Marvel history prepares to write another chapter. Solid writing and strong imagery set the stage for violence and pain. Who will be left standing at the end is anyone’s guess but buckle in for the ride!

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #1 (MARVEL ENTERTAINMENT 2024)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out one of 2024’s most anticipated series! Since its’ debut in the year 2000, “Ultimate Spider-Man” by Marvel Entertainment had welcomed a new generation of fans to a new version of everyone’s favorite neighborhood wall-crawler. The series also catapulted Miles Morales into super stardom with his debut in 2011.

With its’ refreshing take on modern superheroes, USM became a staple at the comic shops until the end of the line in 2015. Nearly a decade later, the line returns with an all new Peter Parker leading the charge.

Ultimate Spider-Man #1 by Jonathan Hickman, Marco Checchetto, Matt Wilson, and Cory Petit looks to forge another legacy run at the comic shops. Let’s take a closer look to see how this debut fares.

Due to the actions of the Maker in Ultimate Invasion, there was no Spider-Man. Twenty years prior, Parker was never bitten by the radioactive spider. This older version of Peter Parker is just that….. Peter Parker.

The story kicks off with an older Peter Parker getting ready for the day. He passes by his kids, Richard and May at the breakfast table. Serving up some much needed coffee is the one and only Mary Jane! Today is a special day that wears heavy on Peter. With no time to talk, he makes his way to the Daily Bugle.

As he’s walking in, J. Johan Jameson is yelling for “PARKER!” This is nothing new for long-time Spider-Man readers. However, the Parker in question isn’t Peter. It’s managing editor BEN PARKER!

This is just the tip of the iceberg as Peter moves about the Bugle. With Ben Parker and Jameson “old friends”, the younger Parker gets some assistance in preparation for a public remembrance from the attack of the Maker and his council (which was framed on Tony Stark).

Readers see Peter and Ben are personally affected from the Maker’s actions on this day. Other notable MCU characters make their presence known. Post remembrance, the story ramps up the drama as the world of Peter Parker gets more shake-ups.

However, Peter’s fate might not be as sealed as he once thought. The closing moments show a familiar face setting him on a path that is set to change the course of this universe forever. The final page speaks volumes as one door has closed and one is about to be blown off the hinges.

Hickman sets up an interesting run of events to start off this new chapter. Peter is happily married to MJ. Ben Parker is alive and that’s just the start of more new ventures for fans to follow. Seeing Peter uneasy for most of this issue might seem off but fits perfectly with the ending.

Living the civilian life of normalcy has never been in his cards. Hickman creates that feeling of wanting more as a ploy leading into the closing act. The closing moments are ones that readers can rally behind as it appears a new day is dawning that won’t be omitted any time soon.

Checchetto and Wilson hone in on the normalcy of Peter’s life. The reactions he has come across as simple but covering up a yearning for more. The reveal of Ben Parker hits huge with a half page panel. The comradery between Ben and Jonah is portrayed as old buddies in a new world. Their actions are bold and make a great Segway from Peter’s story when needed.

The final act plays into the superhero aspect, giving readers a question of Power and destiny. The parting shot is a full page image that gives readers a small indication of bigger things over the horizon.

The latest incarnation of Peter Parker is filled with classic drama and a question of unfulfilled destiny. Hickman sets the stage with magnificent writing while Checchetto and the team offer up some bold imagery while handling the emotional impact of destiny in a can’t miss debut.

With the reveal of who was behind the attacks on Batman, the pair looks to close the case sooner than later. However as all good plans goes, they never go off easy.

With the disconnect from the rest of the family from “The Gotham War”, Bruce Wayne adjusts to a new stat quo. No longer at Wayne Manor, Bruce resides in a brownstone. Luckily for him, he’s not alone in this venture. His son Damian aka Robin stays with him. Both hope to repair a very strained relationship.

Part of this process has been working on an attempted case. Dr. Kafira was the intended target. Their investigation brought them face-to-face with an old foe: Kirk Langstrom aka MAN-BAT! Working with him on this caper is the mysterious Shush. After surviving the encounter, Robin believes he knows who Shush is and how it connects to his “day job” as a High School student.

This chapter begins at Gotham City High School. Raising money for school sports is nothing new. However, a special guest is heling with the pancake fundraiser. Readers see Bruce Wayne is serving hotcakes. This doesn’t go over well with Damian and his plans.

Readers see a flashback to the night before. The dynamic duo is in pursuit of Orca. They apprehend their rogue but not any concrete info. With Man-Bat more dangerous than ever, Batman makes the call to “assist” Damian’s lead on Shush.

How does this play out? Readers see a new side to Damian emerge as his life as an “ordinary” high school student leads into an unlikely place. As the investigation ramps up, the pair starts fitting more pieces of the puzzle…or so they thought. The final image will be the talk of the comic shops this week and looks to open a door no one saw coming.

Williamson constructs the family bonding through rime fighting to make this series stand out like no other. The high school antics provide a light-hearted pause from the hunt for Man-Bat. Damian’s “ploy” to go under cover hides the secret Williamson eludes with his character.

The product of the League Of Assassins appears more open to “normal” high school life than it seems. The writing also reflects the proud father moment in Bruce Wayne. Those panels peak where Bruce is trying to make small talk with his son. This distracts readers long enough set up the final page. It is a crazy surprise that looks to have a deeper tie to the overall story. It’s also another reason this book stands out from the other Bat family for its directions as well.

Čižmešija and Lokus step in for art duties for Simone Di Meo this issue and present a fresh look at Gotham High. The mannerisms of “Happy” Bruce clash with “Brooding” Damian to give readers solid drama while watching Damain’s plans unfold.

That said, The superhero life doesn’t escape this story. There’s a fun two-page spread that kicks off the Orca sequence. The final act captures the investigation tension with images reflecting Damian’s struggle of how events at school have changed. This leads directly into a full page final image that is guaranteed to have Batman fans talking and counting down until the next issue drops.

Fast times at Gotham High reign supreme for the Dynamic Duo as their latest case takes a unique twist. Williamson leads readers in a different side of Damian while balancing the father-son dynamic flawlessly. Čižmešija and Lokus craft excellent imagery to ride shotgun until the final page stops everything with an unforgettable moment.

Last issue, Wilson Fisk, Typhoid Mary and an army of Hellfire soldiers confronted the unlikely trio of Spider-Man, She-Hulk and Tombstone. Considering Kingpin’s sphere of influence, this could be the make or break point of the Gang War.

The mood is tense as Tombstone and Kingpin begin to discuss business. With their children (Kingpin’s son - The Rose and Tombstone’s daughter - The Beetle) on a collision course, there is more than money at stake. Fisk wants to sway action for his son. Tombstone isn’t willing to budge. All the while, Typhoid Mary becomes infatuated with the heroes standing in the background.

The eventual explosion of action commences. Tombstone vs. Kingpin! Typhoid Mary vs She-Hulk! Spidey vs The Hellfire troops! Readers want action, they got it!

Meanwhile, The Rose and Beetle’s forces come to a head as well. The power play for territory is on! With the fate of the city hanging in the balance, the final moments elude that a victor might have been declared in the latest round.

Wells dives heavy into the action for this issue. That’s not a bad thing considering Kingpin’s prescence. The legacy he brings to the war speaks volumes. The conversations with Tombstones line up with the saying “Only Kings can speak with Kings”. Their demeanors reflect their positions in the criminal underworld.

The ending might feel abrupt when reading but it falls back on this theme. The “Honor amongst thieves” weighs heavy until the conflict resolutions hit the readers. There’s much to process between the battles which is only amping up more drama. Nothing but a win for readers.

Romita and company slowly build up the battle with the emotions of Tombstone and Kingpin. The family aspect rings true through the panels. Knowing their children are involved, the anger of the upcoming conflict is a clear connect. The action kicks off with an excellent split two-page spread spotlighting the boss fight.

The shorter panels featuring the conflict between Tombstone and Kingpin later in the book gives a sense of how both are all too familiar with this fight. From Kingpin smiling to Tombstone’s rage building, the art sets a high pace with the moving parts involved. This leads to a subtle conclusion with a 9 panel page capturing the fallout for all parties involved. It drives home the point that the war may have just had a huge turning point for readers to process.

Wilson Fisk makes impacts the battle for New York City instantly with an action-packed issue. Wells lights the match for the combustible parties involved while Romita and company grant readers with excellent fight sequences and a mic drop moment to leave on!

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of a captivating Batman story from DC Comics. From the fallout of “Knight Terrors”, Bruce Wayne has not been himself. With his back-up personality kicked in, the damage done has been immeasurable. Without the Bat family, he’s on his own. Throw in his most dangerous rogue and one questions how things can be worse? “Mind Bomb” proves readers have only begun to find out.

The Dark Knight has not been himself for quite some time. Zur-En-Arrh, the back-up personality of Bruce Wayne has emerged from the results of “Knight Terrors”. Zur-En-Arrh helps cause the divide with Bruce Wayne and the Bat Family with “the Gotham War”. Now along on his war versus crime, the caped crusader has never been more unhinged and violent.

During this time, Joker has reappeared. What starts as a murder to a toy company heir leads into a deeply personal battle, both mentally and physically. The results have now Joker violently disposed and Batman facing his own worst nightmare: Zur-En-Arrh in his own unstoppable robotic body!

The issue begins with a flashback of Zur-En-Arrh overriding Batman’s Failsafe body programming with his own personality. The transfer is all the more frightening in the present. A battered and bruised Batman now stands off against a version of himself that is his imperfect vision of the future.

Even with the offer of letting this version of Batman take over and give Bruce the freedom he would love to have, Batman knows what he must do. The action kicks in as it’s man vs. machine. The pace never slows down as the grueling battle never slows down until the crushing final blow. Readers will need to prepare for impact as the final moments will send the next phase of Batman into uncharted territory.

Zdarsky directs a Hollywood summer action blockbuster within this chapter. There are very few slow moments to allow readers to catch their breathes, but they make the most of their time. Bruce’s initial reaction to Zur-En-Arrh and its’ offer gives the following action even more weight. Knowing what is sacrificed makes the action more tragic. The closing moments bring a grounded moment of clarity to what has just transpired. it’s a fitting finale to a story that pushes Batman past his limits in his Never-ending quest for justice.

Jiménez and Morey give fans a fight not soon forgotten. Right from the front leap into danger, the art reflects the rapid pace. Each panel flows seamlessly into the next matching blow for blow. There is an excellent car chase sequence filled with self-doubt and building emotion.

The “championship rounds” are unrelenting in how the strategic chess match has become. Another half-panel image gives readers a sense of Batman’s rage going into what he feels will conclude the fight. The next pages keep raising the stakes until the few panels bring the battle to a chilling end. The epilogue sets forth an interesting scenario with uneasiness to wrap up things for now, but not for long.

Bruce Wayne comes face to face with an unsettling challenge to bring “Mind Bomb” to an explosive end. Zdarsky pens a tragic, yet exhilarating close with Jiménez, Morey and Cowles providing the beautifully brutal backdrops to an intense last stand for the cowl.
