The writing doesn’t wait to start dropping big moments with the story. Seeing John Stewart have his hands full with a familiar face creates a high pace that rarely slows down. Considering the events of the United Planets and “Absolute Power”, the Lanterns have been tested greatly. Their latest challenge brings them to their breaking point!

The showdown with Thaaros conveys the drama that’s been building for months. Once the Dark Star ring comes into play, stakes are raised. The fallout shakes events up quite a bit. Nothing makes a Hal Jordan story better than when things go off the rails. It’s packed with big action and high drama. However, the final act is what catches the most attention. As a last play is made, the closing page delivers on one (last) return capping this off and leading to the next chapter.

Guy Gardner’s side mission delivers on another big return. It is complimented by Alan Scott crashing the party. Seeing all the Lanterns in the mix is a huge win for fans. The writing is focused on delivering an epic event. There is no mis-step taken here.

Larroca and Guerrero keep readers guessing with the returning characters. Stewart’s initial conflict carries a tremendous feel to the panels. This is largely in part to his returning co-star. Long time GL readers will appreciated who’s back. The art gives the character a near full page entrance. In its’ aftermath, the pages reflect on the desperate time at hand. Before going into action, there is a fantastic full splash showing the Lanterns in a new light: hopeful.

Two page splits construct the Thanagar face-off. Readers watch as the art team set the stage for a last hurrah. With a huge full page attack, Thaaros throws down the gauntlet. The following pages flood with drama and well timed breaks.

The art also brings another familiar face for the mid act. Seeing the Emerald Crusader make the showdown via full page panel is perfect. The art complements his conflict incredibly. Same can be said for Guy Gardner’s mission as well. Once the pages start winding down, One more full page introduction appears to close out an already impressive start for the GL corps event.

The final attempt to handle the United Planets starts the GL Corps off in the “All In” movement. Kennedy-Johnson and Adams balance out the bright spots and desperate hope for a thrilling start. Larroca and Guerrero take readers on a wild ride as the repowered army marches forward with their universes in the crossfire. This chapter sets the stage for a huge conflict brewing behind the emerald light.

Waid delivers another master class in superhero storytelling. The themes play into the vintage motivations of the Man of Steel. Seeing Jimmy Olsen play off the seriousness of Clark makes for a key point in the story. Once the conflict finally begins, the story lands on steady ground to grow.

The mystery behind who escaped the Phantom Zone leads into a great Superman and Supergirl sequence. It never felt like a moment was missed as Waid builds up the drama heading into the final act. At this stage, more clues are finally revealed as Superman makes a call. The result leads into a surprising closing page. If you are a fan of the classic hero tales, this one is sure to please.

Henry and Herms are on the call for art duties. The antagonists make a big debut with a loud full page splash. From here, the pages are filled with excellent back and forth between Jimmy and Clark. It provides just enough time to pause before the action comes in fast. The art team display the conflict with a huge sense of urgency.

Its’ fallout showcases the next phase in unlocking the mystery at hand. The art team conveys the feel of the classic Superman tales with each interaction with his team and Lois. The result leads to a fantastic final page. It's a cliffhanger that looks to be the tip of something special on the way.

The back-up Supergirl story dives in to a mission shrouded in mystery. Whenever the United Planets are involved, nothing is off limits. It sets the foundation with many questions following as something is off with Supergirl. Judging by the final page, it is a safe assessment Kara’s latest adventure is larger than anyone has realized.

The weekly run of Action Comics starts off with a steady lead-in for the Man Of Steel and company. Waid’s writing dishes out the classic feel of big action and drama. The Dark Lord of Apokolips has created his own universe. Known as “The Absolute Universe”, his version of the DCU has fans buzzing with excitement.

The hype is amplified even more with the announcement of a new version of a classic hero. In 85 years, readers have NEVER seen a caped crusader quite like this!

Snyder returns to Gotham City with a bold new take on this initial chapter. Stripping away much of the lore of Bruce Wayne gives a very grounded lead. The one notable theme quickly picked up is there is more raw aggression behind his actions. It is a reflection of the world he lives in. This version of Gotham feels more unstable and unpredictable. Seeing classic characters retold in this lense provides a thrilling and complicated trip.

There are plenty of changes of traditional characters. Alfred Pennyworth is a grizzled agent. Killer Croc is Bruce’s childhood friend. The rogues gallery gets presented in very different ways. The story still has a Batman born from tragedy, but not the way one would think. Snyder is clearly having fun with the creativity while dancing around Gotham’s dangerous streets. Once the conflict kicks into gear, the writing shows a more violent Batman than has been seen in recent years. It caps off with a surprising showdown that doesn’t disappoint. This is an all new Batman that packs a rageful punch.

Dragotta and Martin make this version of Gotham stand out for many reasons. The flashback sequences mix the color schemes to camouflage the tragedy building. This plays well into the new origin story. Bruce Wayne comes across as an ordinary citizen. It is a big contrast to the playboy billionaire alter ego readers know.

Once the first rogue strikes, the art team crafts an uneasy encounter filled with unapologetic images. Black Mask and the Party Animals make an immediate statement. It’s met head on later with the imposing Batman unleashing his fury. The full page image of the Batman flying into action speaks volumes. It sets a high pace as each panel speeds through the chaos. Once events settle into the final act, the art keeps up the suspense. Flying into the close, the two page spread caps off a thrill ride that has miles to go before its’ end.

Gotham is in a renaissance. Bruce Wayne has led a movement to take his city into a new level of prosperity. One key player in this equation is Edward Nygma aka The Riddler. The longtime Batman rogue has appeared to have gone legit. It appears this is a new start for a city with a long legacy of suffering.

With business booming and crime down, how long can Batman’s plans stay in tact before it all comes crashing down?

Zdarsky brings forth quite the dilemma for the Caped Crusader. As much as Wayne’s ideals would lead to drastic change for Gotham, he’s met with stiff competition. The Riddler’s new stat quo poses a threat that will push Batman unlike before. Nygma’s “redemption” with crypto currency leads readers into uncharted territory. Taking the path of “humble businessman”, the writing slowly builds up the grand scheme at hand.

There is one character who takes away the spotlight for this issue. Mayor Nakano is written as a troubled soul, Trying to do the right thing in Gotham is always a challenge. Zdarsky balances the political ramifications along side the emotional weight to provide excellent drama. This all comes to a head with the final act. Throwing in a new vigilante is another shock to the system. The ramifications lead into a jaw-dropping final page. In this moment, there’s much commotion as Gotham’s new age to lock readers in for the long haul.

Jiménez returns after a few issues off and brings in a fresh look at New Gotham. The panels between Batman and Gordan echo their longstanding partnership and hesitation about the building calm. There is a great transition to a six panel “TV report” that is eye catching.

Nakano’s drama wears the gravity of his world crumbling. The panels relay the drama to the readers knowing a shift is happening easily. Commander Star debuts with a near full page image. The pace picks up as the action ensues after his attack on some robbers. Jiménez and Morey cap this scenario off with a strong half panel of Batman facing off with the police.

The art switches to a Nine panel set-up for the closing pages. Walking readers through each character’s fallout buts towards a monster end page. The full image leaves a long shadow on its’ events. Had it not be for the last panel, this would have THE image of the book. Combined and the art weaves its’ growing drama throughout the sense of beginnings with the new arc.

Gotham City is “All In” for change while some prominent residents would say otherwise. Zdarsky constructs a revision of a classic rivalry with the writing. Jiménez, Morey and Cowles bring out the intensity of Gotham’s key players in the fight for control of the City. Brace for the cloing page as Bat’s world is about to be turned upside down!

BIRDS OF PREY #14 (DC COMICS)

One of DC’s premier teams returned with a vengeance during the “Dawn Of DC” movement. With an ambitious first arc, BIRDS OF PREY brought a high level of storytelling and hasn’t slowed down since. This week kicks off the “All In” initiative at the LCS. It also brings forth a new challenge for Oracle, Black Canary and company.

Thompson heads back into the deep cover lore of the Birds history with this chapter. Cassandra Cain (Batgirl) being the undercover agent is an easy hit with playing the role as hired security. The infiltration of the Ninth Day team leads into a deeper discovery. It is well paced as Cain “proves” herself to the mysterious organization. Oracle and Canary’s conversation with Queen Nubia adds on to the mounting pressure to deal with the growing threat.

The chapter also introduces some new members for this go-around. Grace Choi and Onyx “meeting” with Big Barda provides a fun break from the mission at hand. The sparring session is filled with great action and one-liners. It does take up a solid portion of the book but is well placed. The ending leaves on a solid cliffhanger with many questions arising. Rest assured, there is way more miles to go before this conclusion.

Basri and Lucas open Cain’s first “meeting” with an action packed two page splash. This plays into the calm demeanor of Cain’s undercover work. Only on its’ closing panel do readers see a subtle smirk. It plays off the anxiousness of Black Canary as she converses with Oracle. Knowing the past history with the Amazons, the art mirrors the thought of failure is unacceptable.

Readers are greeted with a great sequence of Barda sparring with the new recruits. This begins with a full page panel that shows Barda ready for action. Once the punches start flying, the panels start ramping up the quickness of the fight. Cowles’ lettering adds so much to these panels as well. Events close off with a near full page parting shot of discovery. It’s a solid way to close off what is already an intriguing start to a new chapter for the team.

The Birds of Prey kick off their latest chapter with a strong lead-in. Thompson builds the drama with fantastic art. Basri, Lucas and Cowles balances the undercover work with solid imagery. The last page will have readers locked in for another excellent ride!

Williamson and Snyder swing BIG in this opening chapter. Splitting the book into two parts (one on heroes, the other on Darkseid’s view), readers get a vivid and bold picture of the new stat quo.

Time jumping one year after “Absolute Power”, the foundation of the new league plays into the concept of superhero evolving. Making Booster Gold the lead character is a perfect choice to usher in this portion. Gold’s legacy is a mixed one that has taken many turns. Seeing his reactions as he is optimistic for the chances given make a strong impression. As the conflict arises, the pace speeds up with each page. The resolution provides a shocking discovery. Once the close comes into focus, the writing leaves readers with a mic drop moment for what lies ahead.

It matches up perfectly to the eerie feel of the Darkseid portion. The tone dictates a new path to acquiring power. Seeing the new approach leads into dark places, not only in the DCU, but his own mind. The conflicts cause a showdown with an unlikely foe. It leads into more revelations that solidify a change in destiny.

Once that is cleared up, the story starts coming together with the other portion to create something brand new. It also creates something very darker in nature as well. The new landscape shows promise of a sinister backdrop which bodes well for Darkseid. How events leave off prove to be a fantastic mic-drop moment for fans to savor.

Sampere (Heroes) and Craig (Darkseid) are the two main artists for this chapter. Each bring a distinct style to their stories.

The heroes welcome in the promise of tomorrow with a strong two page spread. There are many cameos mixed in to showcase the high level of importance of the new initiative. This is followed up by a strong two page image putting the plan in place. Seeing Booster’s facial reaction connects the sense of hope with readers. It is quickly dashed as Darkseid hits the scene.

The near full page loudly ushers the new threat perfectly. it carries a big fight feel as the chaos begins. Its’ conclusion is gifted another two-page spread ending in a peculiar spot. This leads into the closing pages where everything readers know has drastically changed.

It is directly in line with Craig’s art for Darksied’s new beginnings. The pages are brooding with a sober overtone. Each conflict is portrayed with a blunt and unapologetic feel. This is Darksied at his best. Once he comes across his “prize”, the art locks in the moment with bright coloring . This leads to a huge one page image declaring a new shift has happened. It is a perfect homage to a legendary artist (the late George Perez).

This builds towards the opposite close. The view through other eyes works to establish a disrupt from the normal tale. Both stories end with a gorgeous Dan mora two page image that is sure to send shockwaves throughout the DC Fandom. Brace yourself for impact.

The last stand of the DCU heroes has arrived. Amanda Waller has been one step ahead. Depowering her opposition, Waller and the Trinity of Evil were on the verge of total control. That was halted by an unlikely win on Paradise Island for the good guys.

Now poised to take a final attempt to stop Waller once and for all, the heroes race towards her Gamora headquarters with nothing left to lose.

When readers hear “Event”, there is a sense of wonder if a story will live up to the title. Waid leaves no uncertainty that this IS an event of epic proportions. The attack on Gamora kicks off with Nightwing giving another motivation speech before combat. His evolution into the face of the new DCU cannot be denied.

Once the battle starts, pacing moves the spotlight onto a few key characters. The conflict between Wonder Woman and Steel gets a proper payoff. Hearing the dialogue between Barry Allen and Hal Jordan as their play is made is vintage superhero 101. It balances out the faceoff between Waller and Nightwing before sending the story into its’ closing act.

Readers watch as Waid throws in a few surprises leading to the strong finish. An unlikely hero becomes the key component leading to victory. Another’s actions lead to a change that concludes the “Dawn Of DC” era. Waid balances out both moments to compliment the fate of Waller. Her fate is a fantastic twist that ultimately leads to a new era for DC’s heroes. Once the final page is finished, there is no question readers just witnessed true change in the DC Universe.

With the ensemble cast involved, Mora’s artwork shines throughout the final chapter. The opening build for the attack on Gamora features Nightwing’s confidence set a high bar for the battle unfolding. The attack kicks off with a gorgeous near full page visual of the heroes running into the fight. The rage of Steel losing the duel connects loudly as the tide is turning. It steers the story into a more direct flow that captures the essence to the heroes fighting.

Seeing the Flash/Green Lantern team-up pops off the pages. Jordan’s smiles through the conflict reminds readers of the fearlessness he often shows. Another partner of Hal’s gets a full page splash that leas into an amazing two page spread. The closing panels with Waller demonstrates a wide scale of emotions as the event concludes on a satisfying note. Mora and Sanchez’s epilogue pages leave readers on a fitting point as a era has ended with a fresh start waiting in the wings.

The “Dawn Of DC” officially ends with a spectacular conclusion. Waid’s incredible writing unveils the true strengths of the DCU heroes. Paired with the always impressive visuals from Mora, readers will have no doubts that the event lived up to the hype.

BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN - THE LAST HALLOWEEN #1 (DC COMICS)

The Long Halloween. A serial killer strikes on holidays early in the Dark Knight’s career. One of the greatest Batman stories of all time. Jeph Loeb and the late Tim Sale debuted the murder mystery in 1996. It was an instant hit with readers and produced a sequel, “Dark Victory” in 1999.

Loeb and Sale reunited 25 years after the story’s debut for 2021’s “Batman: the Long Halloween Special”. This sparked a return to their Gotham City storyline. Unfortunately, Sale passed away in 2022.

Loeb stated in an interview: ““About a year later, after speaking with Mark Chiarello and Richard Starkings, my partners on the previous Long Halloween titles, we decided the time was right to move this forward as a tribute to Tim, who continues to be with us in spirit.”

Loeb doesn’t delay in bringing forth the lingering aspects of Holiday on Gotham’s residents. The opening play with the Dents carries a high sense of tension. Batman’s monologue is haunting as the pages unfold. Featuring Gordon’s sub plot is a solid companion piece. It shows readers the stretching reach and effect what Holiday has done.

As for the caped crusader, Batman investigations take a familiar twist. His presence gets outshined by an overly-eager Robin. The writing presents a very naive Boy Wonder forcing his way into the case. It offers a small break into the drama but ultimately loses out to Batman and Two-Face. The closing act leaves readers with a shocking end as the mystery of Holiday looks to enter a whole new realm.

Risso leads off an all star lineup of artists for this series. The opening two page splash of the Dents sets a dark feel and tense pace. It carries into the terrifying Gordon plot. Readers see a switch in gears as the dynamic duo are gifted a tremendous two page image as they chase an evading Catwoman.

Stewart’s coloring raises the emotions of a very worried Gordon family. The panels pour with the frightening aspect of what has happened to the child. It is counters with a more somber image of Gordon shrouded in the shadow of the Bat signal. This all builds toward a steady final sequence. The parting image will leave readers wanting more answers to an ever developing puzzle.

The Long Halloween’s final trilogy starts off on a very high level. Loeb’s writing easily constructs a city still gripped in fear. It is only fitting that Waller’s last adversary on her rise is the Caper Crusader. Ridley pens Batman as the ultimate test. The writing reflects the methodical way Waller looks to deal with a threat to her plans. Readers see the lengths she goes to with no regard for anyone else, including her family.

Speaking of her children, Ridley allows Waller to show little emotion as her schemes become unraveled. The exposure of taping a conversation with the President gives an insight on the divide Waller’s actions have caused. It also steers Waller back on her path to handling Batman. The cold demeanor which readers know begins to surface and solidify. This spirals into the bittersweet close. It leaves Waller exposing the belief that the actions justify the means. Will this come to fruition? Only time will tell.

Martinez and the art team usher in Batman’s attack on Waller in style. A full page spread sets the pace for Batman handling Waller’s forces. This is completed with a page that stares speak louder than words. The conversations with her family range from calm to quietly caring. Waller’s stance never truly waivers. Simone gives this classic tale a superb ending with the close. Lord Grunhar is a traditional villain who hits all the key points. Cheating the game to ultimately win is a perfect ploy. However, this chapter casts a big spotlight on what makes Superman so great. The writing reflects how he refuses to accept defeat. Even with his body breaking down, the drive for Truth, justice ad a Better Tomorrow remains unphased.

This leads into some creative plays from Lois and Jimmy. The conversation between Lois and Hux-Ur adds to the already hostile situation. Heading into the big battle, events play out as fans would hope. There is big action before the crafty ending. Once at this stage, events wind down with a well-timed landing and epilogue that remains excellent no matter what year you read it in.

Barrows and the art team never fall off from exemplifying the grand stage of events. The opening shot of Superman being helped off is gifted a full page splash. This leads to a great panel sequence of Lois and Hux-Ur. How the gladiator never acknowledges Lois drives him his disregard for her pleas, adding to the drama. Once the fight begins, the art gives a full page splash worthy of the epic confrontation. Imagery brings forth the brutality of Superman’s survival. This is matched by a striking image of Supes dropping a hammer fist onto his attacker. The final pages tie up loose ends and departs with a light hearted moment that is 100% Superman storytelling.

The side story of Rowell and Tormey concludes with a deep dive into the conflict of professional and personal lives. It is a solid conclusion to a perspective that fans might not have registered. This was a great companion tale that shows Clark and Lois and their best.

The Man Of Steel’s trip back in time nails the landing in its’ concluding chapter. Simone’s phenomenal writing brings the finest out of the Superman mythos. Barrows and the art team construct a throwdown for the ages with the strong imagery. This is a fantastic read that adds another highspot in the legendary legacy of Superman.

Waid wastes no time in bringing the excitement level up to 10. From the offset, this is a classic JLA story. Showcasing Eclipso’s plans early raises the stakes immensely. Dipping back to the “24 hours earlier”, the writing features the heroes on a new endeavor. Eclipso is brought to this story with a vintage supervillain introduction. It plays perfectly off Robin’s dialogue as eluded Bruce Gordon wasn’t completely done with the dark demon.

Fast forward to present, Waid throws the pair into the deep end with conflict. Readers will truly enjoy the action taking place. With this many characters involved, the event needs to feel epic. There is no mis-step with this chapter. The closing act doesn’t slow its’ pace down until a drastic action is taken place. This leads to a perfect epilogue as more jump into the fray against DC’s Prince of Darkness.

Gutiérrez steps in for art duties for Dan Mora with Bonvillain on coloring and knocks it out of the park (Editor Note: If you haven’t read his Blue Beetle work, make a point to). The action really begins with a near full page splash of Eclipso’s “team” attacking Superman.

From here, the initial debut of Eclipso kicks off with a maniacal glaze from a possessed Gordon. The half page panel leaves no doubt a change has happened. This is largely due to Wands’ lettering underneath the panel. Once events shift back to the JLA spacestation, a high pace is kept for all the action. It leads to a big conclusion of conflict (for now) via a full page image. The conclusion eases readers back with a more grounded approach to the final page. Once there, a full page panel reveals that the fight is far from over versus the classic DC villain.

Batman and Superman must fight overwhelming darkness in this initial story chapter. Waid’s writing creates a timeless tale of adventure and action. Gutiérrez constructs the energetic images perfectly fitting for a tale of this level. This series always maintains a high level of storytelling that can’t be missed!

Williamson throws a unique perspective into an already chaotic scenario. For this crisis, readers see Superman cross a line or the greater win. Making Neron the deciding factor plays well for amping up the drama. Its’ fallout dives into Superman’s will to win no matter the cost. This complements the efforts of Lois and company to track him down. The actions also feature both heroes opinions on Magic. It is very well known Superman and Magic do not mix. However, for his partner here, that is her world.

Zatanna is written as challenged to find her identity. The dialogue with her and Supes comes off impactful. She lays out her insecurities and challenges Superman about his Magic ethic stance. This leads into a play when the main antagonist appears. Both heroes make a call which leads into a solid finale. The epilogue brings everything back full circle. One door appears to close but the last page says otherwise and then some.

Campbell presents excellent imagery as the pair enters into the dark side of Magic. The depiction of Neron comes off as everything one would expect when dealing with a devil. This leads into a fantastic two page splash as they travel the Dark Roads. Campbell’s attention to details in this massive piece will have readers glued to the pages.

The latter half of the book is fueled by Superman and Zatanna’s conflicting views. Campbell captures their points of view and drives home the feelings from both. It plays into a solid action sequence before resolving their dilemma. The issue is capped off with a soon to be iconic page of Superman and Lois reuniting. It perfectly brings an end to their quest as they head into the monster crossover finale.

There’s sympathy for a hero, but no devil as the struggles hit a definitive stop for Superman in this chapter. Williamson weaves a debate about magic through conflict with his excellent writing. Campbell continues to impress with the high level imagery. This one will have fans excited as the Man of Steel heads back into the fight for Absolute Power!

Adams brings out the best of Hal Jordan for an exciting tale. The writing shows off his fearlessness in heading right into the lion’s den of danger. Readers watch as the danger doesn’t just stem to Waller. Breaking into one of Batman’s islands to “borrow” a plane makes for a risky yet enjoyable start to his latest adventure. Adding Flash into the mix works on many levels.

Their bold play into Waller’s operations speeds events into a kinetic pace. Hal has never been a perfect hero by any stretch. Seeing his maneuvering through the main protagonist here provides thrills that scream vintage GL. It builds towards a solid conclusion built around the notion of hope. Readers see this grow from another hero rising to the occasion: Alan Scott. The dialogue gifts the change in direction needed to get Jordan on the path to making a run at Waller before it’s too late.

Pasarin, Albert, and Fajardo Jr. construct great action around the drama of Waller’s plans. Seeing what Hal is planning to steal is given a full page image to exemplify the risks. Once Flash and Hal fly into action, the pacing ramps up another degree. This becomes evident with another full page image of Hall transitioning into battle.

In between the action, Dove, Star Sapphire and Alan Scott all get ample panel time to push their stories forward. The art team captures the wear of their conflicts. It counters the high stakes action of Jordan’s tale to give readers a multi-layered issue. This one has something for everyone.

The back-up story gives an epilogue into the John Stewart “Green Lantern: War Journal” series with a bigger saga on the horizon.

Reclaiming his crown has been a challenge for the Batman rogue. Cobblepot’s children have been unwilling to give up their power. That was never going to stop him. The streets of Gotham have become filled with blood and bodies. It appears the Penguin is back but can he survive when plans go sideways?

Batman and Cobblepot’s conversations always stays grounded to the long history between both. Even as he questions his place in Gotham, Penguin doesn’t let go of the thought he’s one step ahead of everyone else. This plays out perfectly with the full circle moment with the government. The conclusion is a fitting and reflective vision of one of Gotham’s most notorious figures. King always delivers on bringing out the psychological aspects of his leads. This tale is no exception as it paints Cobblepot in a brand new light.

De Latorre and Maiolo send events out with stong visuals. Batman’s plight to save Penguin keeps a swift, frantic pace. This leads to a great split page of both falling for differing reasons.

In dealing with fallout from the power play, the art team closes in on Cobblepot’s ability to pivot for business. The scenes in dealing with Addison is prime example of this. Heading into the closing act, the parting conversation with Batman ends with a great full page splash of both looking over “their” city. Readers are left with a perfect closing page that leaves no question on where things stand now.

The legendary Batman villain ends his journey to reclaim his throne with an explosive finale. King’s writing draws out the cold-blooded nature of fighting for power. There is one overall theme that will jump out to longtime readers of this run. The Bat/Cat relationship seems back in its normal stat quo. Zdarsky pens a few key moments showcasing the pair at their strongest. This comes to life when a familiar villain makes a guest appearance. Its’ fallout leads to a well earned reset for the fabled pair as they head back into the battle with Waller.

Hawthorne and the art team deliver on steady action sequences throughout the issue. The standoff with Bizarro jumps out from most of the other action. With Cowles lettering, these panels jump more than others.

Readers will very excited with the big guest star debuting here. With a near full page panel, the moment seems monstrous. Batman’s reactions scream of shock once its’ revealed who has entered the story. It leads to a solid closing panels. Both Nightwing and Barda present points to their respective arguments. In this time of uncertainty, uncomfortable choices have to be made. The ultimate answer provides a moment readers won’t be able to escape. Pacing allows for the creative build to amplify this outcome along the furious action.

The writing also weaves a few other instances where hope is still the heroes’ greatest strength. Waid mixes in challenges of self doubt and battling through it. These stories give the readers reassurance that they won’t go down with a final play. It leads into a very strong closing act. The chapter wraps up with another fantastic cliffhanger leading into its’ final stand.

Mora and Sanchez bring an even balance of action and emotion to this chapter. The stance of Barda vs. Nightwing carries much weight with their reactions. This becomes even heavier with a half page panel of Nightwing leading a charge to resolve this once and for all. Readers can easily sense this tension while Grayson kicks into high gear.

This is complemented with BIG action sequences. Bizarro’s onslaught leaves a brutal mark. Mora keeps up the electric feel throughout the fighting. This especially shines in the final act. With an emotional half page panel, there is finally a win under the heroes column. It is an image readers have been waiting to see for quite some time in this saga. Factor that in with the parting image and this series strikes a home run yet again!

Its’ fallout plays in a predictable yet satisfying close. Few can pull this off quite like Waid with his writing.

The sense of anger and (to a certain degree) fear start taking over the pages. This theme is very prevalent during the close. It ultimately leaves readers with a jaw dropping ending that fits the broken persona of DC’s biggest hero.

This quickly fades away as Superman’s impatient behavior takes center stage. Imagery raises the stakes to an all time high. The art team presents a full page closing figure that readers will have thoughts on. It plays into leaving the audience wanting more. This issue shows no signs of misfiring in that aspect.

The lengths and desperation start seeping in on DC’s flagship character with this chapter. Williamson pens a defeated yet driven Superman with the writing. Campbell continues providing fantastic images that easily hook readers in. Considering where the closing page lands, all bets are off as events play out.

For this entry, the trip to Superman’s past continues on! DC Comics’ longest running title took a break from the current timeline. It has chosen to dive into a classic era. The result has been a thrilling adventure that brings out the best of the Man Of Steel.

With an alien invasion forcing him into combat, Superman is confronted with impossible odds. Can he weather the storm at hand?

ACTION COMICS #1068 by Gail Simone, Eddy Barrows, Danny Miki, Rex Lokus and Dave Sharpe (Back-up by Rainbow Rowell, Cian Tormey, and Romulo Fajardo jr.) looks to raise the stakes as the fate of Earth hangs in the balance!

Let’s take a closer look at what transpires now!

ACTION COMICS #1068 by Gail Simone, Eddy Barrows, Danny Miki, Rex Lokus and Dave Sharpe (Back-up by Rainbow Rowell, Cian Tormey, and Romulo Fajardo jr.) - DC COMICS

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Simone brings out the strengths and doubts of a young Superman. With the challenge of saving Metropolis, the writing reflects the determination to succeed. It also features the Man Of Steel questioning himself. The payoff is completely heroic. This sets a strong tempo for the next phase of the story.

While on the alien ship, Lois Lane emerges as the true strength behind the Man of Steel. Once they reunite, the dialogue fuels Superman into the next challenge. The closing sequence is pure superhero themes. Big stakes, bigger action, biggest heart and will. Simone captures the classic essence and presents it with a timeless feel. It builds towards an excellent finish with a great cliffhanger. There’s much to enjoy about the writing in this story.

Barrows, Miki and Lokus continue to bring the big-screen action with Superman’s conflicts. The floating ship panels ramp up the tense danger. It caps off with a big full page splash (literally) concluding the challenge. From here, the alien ship is presented with a two page splash that exemplifies the various interested parties.

However, the issue’s big challenge steals the show. after Lois’ words, Superman kicks into high gear. The images flow with his race against the clock. The full page countdown scenario plays well into the intense pace of the action. It moves into a great closing panel. Simple in set-up, the panel sets the stage for a big conclusion to an already impressive story.

The back-up story by Rowell and Tormey adds more to the ethical challenges of the Kents. Rowell’s writing shows all sides of the argument. This is a very different side of Lois and Clark that hasn’t been seen in a while. Tormey and the team bring forth the emotional wear on both key players with exceptional ease. The conclusion throws a distinct ending panel before picking up next chapter.

The throwback tale of the Man Of Steel continues its’ winning ways with another great issue. Simone’s writing delivers on the hero’s will versus improbable odds.
