Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, DC Comics’ iconic vigilante returns to a familiar realm. From various incarnations with the Justice League to the legendary “Batman: The Animated Series (1992)”, fans have been drawn to the animated escapades of Bruce Wayne. Breaking into this arena has allowed for many creative opportunities. Some have hit. Others have not.

2014 was the last solo Batman series with “Beware The Batman”. Since then, pop culture witnessed his monster return to the big screen with Matt Reeves’ 2022 film, “The Batman”. The back to basics feel won over the fandom. Spawning from that is an upcoming sequel. It also created an opportunity to return to this universe in an animated form.

At a 2021 WarnerMedia event, “BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER” was announced. JJ Abrams (Bad Robot), Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) and Reeves were the three lead exec. producers for the new project. In 2022, the series was picked up by Amazon Studios for Prime Video after Warner Bros. Discovery opted out of the project.

The series is slated to debut its’ first season on August 1st, 2024. Amazon Studios for Prime Video allowed the ODPH podcast early access to the new animated Batman series.

Let’s take a closer look at how this new entry fares. Note : This will be a SPOILER FREE review.

Knowing the trio of powerhouse creators producing, expectations are high. Add in Ed Brubaker, James Tucker, Daniel Pipski, Rachel Rusch Rich
and Sam Register into the exec. producer mix and it only raises the bar higher. Much to fans’ delight, they don’t miss giving a fresh take to Gotham City’s favorite citizen.

The series carries a vintage feel to its’ surroundings. From the cars to the architecture, it brings the audience back to a simpler time. There will be instant comparisons to Batman: TAS. However, the series quickly breaks away from that correlation with its’ more mature and grounded themes.

The complex dynamic between the Dark Knight and notable amoral characters (and their devious actions) leans heavy into the "real world" aspect of recent storytelling. It is a perfect compliment to Reeves’ movie vision.

“Crusader” delves into the best of Batman’s early years with precision writing and voice acting. Not everything is perfect but the series nails the key points when mattered most.

Hamish Linklater (Batman/Bruce Wayne) delivers a strong performance with his take of the Dark Knight. There is a noticeable aura of an inexperienced Batman throughout the series. This plays well to the audience. It allows them to connect to the brand new landscape and evolving dangers it brings.

Linklater distinguishes Wayne’s calm demeanor with Batman’s gruff persona very well. By the time of the finale, it is very well cemented that Batman is really the hero the city deserves.

The series also dives and re-imagines some of Batman’s greatest rogues to much success. The Penguin (Oswalda Cobbelpot - voiced by Minnie Driver) and Harley Quinn (Harleen Quinzel- Voiced by Jamie Chung) are two magnificent character performances that steal the episodes that they are in.

Both give new creative directions that play up to their well known statuses. I really enjoyed the Quinn take because it comes across as a multi-layered approach that is rarely showcased on this level.

Not everything is all new takes concerning the rouges. Christina Ricci’s Catwoman performance is as classic as it comes. It leaves a lasting impression that holds its’ own with the great company it keeps. The same can be said for Diedrich Bader’s Harvey Dent/Two-Face. With Dent’s evolution from start to the spectacular finale, fans will have much to rave about with the tragic rogue.

The only times the series steps back are when they dabble in the supernatural. While entertaining, the two episodes (“Night Ride” and “Nocturne”) that center around this theme seem to stray too far from the grounded epicenter. They still are quality viewings never the less.

There are also standout performances from Michelle C. Bonilla (Renee Montoya), Krystal Joy Brown (Barbara Gordon) and Jason Watkins (Alfred Pennyworth) stretching into each episode. They reflect the corrupt world of Gotham and the challenge to find its’ redemption.

Two episodes that bring this theme to the forefront are “Moving Target” and “The Night of The Hunters”. The latter, imo, defines what this series is all about: grounded, realistic struggles to fight the good fight. Isn’t that what Batman’s all about?

The Bat is Back in animation in a big way. “Crusader” presents an innovative version of the Dark Night that fans won’t want to stop watching. With excellent voice acting, the world of Gotham flourishes with new visions. Favorite characters get revived with takes that mesh solidly with images that are sure to please new and seasoned fans alike. This one has all the makings to carve its’ own spot in the Batman mythos for seasons to come.

ABSOLUTE POWER: ORIGINS #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, the architect of DC Comics’ latest event is collecting victory after victory. Metahumans are being depowered. A scared public is being manipulated in her favor. The Trinity of Evil is on the brink of taking absolute control of the DCU. This is all going according to plan for AMANDA WALLER.

“The Wall” has never been shy about her feelings towards super heroes. Waller’s ruthlessness and determination is second to none. With Absolute Power within reach, Readers are about to see how it all began.

ABSOLUTE POWER: ORIGINS #1 by John Ridley, Alitha Martinez, Norm Rapmund, Andrew Dalhouse and Steve Wands begins to reveal the origin of one of the most feared and dangerous people in the DC Universe.

Let’s take a deeper dive into this debut chapter.

Ridley constructs a beginning based on loss and revenge. The parallels to Bruce Wayne’s beginnings make an instant connection to the readers. Both are driven by great loss. However, that is where the comparison ends. Waller deals with a system failing her when she needed it the most. Seeing how masked vigilantes receive preferred treatment lights a strong emotional reaction. This fuels her rage and begins her new path of vengeance.

Waller’s long game play works to perfection. It is not without challenges. The strain put on her family is tough and amplifies how committed she is to her goal. Seeing the big picture, Waller finds ways to sway favor in her direction.

The strongest point of this chapter is a conversation between Waller and Marvin Collins (who she’s volunteering on his congress campaign). In this moment, Waller delivers to readers why she is so dangerous. The pieces to a larger puzzle start falling in place. Once the closing page hits, there is no doubt this is only the beginning of something more sinister.

Martinez brings the painful beginnings of Waller’s path by capturing her rage in multiple panels. There is a key reaction to a Jim Gordon statement that is very clear in seeing her transform from sorrow into vengeful. Batman gets a full page image justifying what Waller is envisioning while Collins opponent is talking. Her unfazed reaction to the speech exemplifies how hardened she’s become to anything outside of her goal.

Waller’s conversation with her daughter shows the wear of her actions. Readers see the frustration in her expressions. This becomes short-lived as Waller begins her final play. The cold demeanor plays out perfectly as she accomplishes her first goal. It is complemented by the final page. Waller’s eyes speak more than any word bubble can. One goal down, many more to go.

FINAL GRADE: 9

Amanda Waller’s path to power begins with a strong tale of conviction over grief. Ridley pens a direct and excellent first chapter with the writing. Martinez, Rapmund, Dalhouse and Wands construct the revenge guided visuals showcasing the genesis of arguably the most dangerous person on the DCU Earth. This will be one story you won’t want to miss.

ABSOLUTE POWER: TASK FORCE VII #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay points!

For this entry, the reign of Amanda Waller has begun. Planning for weeks, Waller has unleashed her plan of eliminating superheroes from the DCU. Powerless heroes serve no opposition to her Trinity Of Evil. This truly feels like the darkest time in the DCU.

Spinning out of the first chapter is a series highlighting Waller’s grand scheme. Readers will need to brace for the journey they’re about to partake. There is no happy ending on the horizon from what we have seen thus far.

ABSOLUTE POWER: TASK FORCE #1 by Leah Williams, Caitlin Yarsky, Alex Guimarães and Dave Sharpe brings the Marvel family into the crossfire!

Let’s take a deeper dive as to where things go now.

Williams spotlights Waller’s attack on the Marvels with a steady paced tale. Using Parasite as an unwilling tracker, her cold intentions shine through. This transfers over to The Last Son. Bearing a likeness to Superman (Is this really Jonathan Kent?), the mysterious figure brings the fight to the young heroes. This carries a more lighter feel as one who reads Shazam knows. That does change when a new entrant crashes the party.

At this stage, the mood shifts dramatically. Readers watch as the Last Son starts showing areas of a break in programming. Williams leaves this point vague to allow readers to form their own theories. It is short lived but noteworthy. Form here, the events lead to an expected conclusion. Even with the final pages, Waller’s manipulations grow further with a new face falling under her wicked constructed vision.

Yarsky and Guimarães kick off events with asolid opening chapter. Seeing the fear and pain in Parasite’s face strikes a nerve with readers. Waller’s emotionless expressions proves how far she’s willing to go to secure victory.

The Rock of Eternity portion replicate classic themes with the visuals. Seeing Billy Batson and Mary Bromfield process how they are now being hunted adds to the drama. Their “back-up” makes a huge debut with a full page image. This carries into the action sequences. Events move very swiftly leading to a sudden finale of the fight. The closing pages set up the next phase very well with a final panel mirroring what the audience is thinking.

Amanda Waller’s plan stretch across the DCU with a chapter taking a closer look at her victorious ways. Williams gives readers a deeper look at the evil rising with an excellent story. Yarsky, Guimarães and Sharpe construct a focused look at Waller’s attack with the visuals. If you’re looking for a broader picture of the evil takeover, this will be one for you.

With all the good things swirling around Wayne’s life, not everything is well and good. Amanda Waller has dangerous plans lingering in the shadows. None of which will make Batman very happy once discovered.

Zdarsky sets up a simple yet layered dilemma with this chapter. Someone discovering the true identity of Batman is a gift and curse per say. The writing shows the weight of the information crushing a desperate man. With each page, the hope of a score slowly dwindle away. The escalation of problems helps move things right along to a strong closing act.

Even with the swirling thieves trying to get that information, the story has been all based around a man trying to find some purpose. The conversation he has with his son hits readers very deeply. The impact of Batman on Gotham’s citizens shines in this moment. A normal night for him can alter someone’s future forever. Once the final pages start rolling, Zdarsky ties up some loose ends before showing how the Bat can inspire someone to become much more no matter who they are.

A new dynamic duo steps in for art duties for this special issue. Cowan and Jiménez give readers a detailed look at how the Bat impacts the criminal world. The panels feature varying accounts of previous encounters. It also features a looming Batman watching over his city with no dialogue. This lets the people form their own versions of the Dark Knight’s influence.

Cowan’s depiction of the father and son talk works to drive home the core theme. The reactions of a changed son and broken father strike a chord. It carries into the closing moments. Events close up with a strong parting shot sending readers home knowing Gotham is Batman and Batman is Gotham.

“Brick by Brick” serves as a solid bridge from Absolute Power to Batman’s next move in that story. The writing catches Batman at a very low point. It amplifies the chaos unfolding around him. The art flows with the faster pace of events. It also gives more clues to Waller’s big play. It does its’ job to move things forward with a new player teased to become part of the big event.

Knowledge is power, but at what cost? That is the question posed with this anniversary issue. Zdarsky presents a lost soul’s quest for relevancy with excellent writing. Cowan, Jiménez and the art team walk readers through the seedy world of Gotham with strong visuals. This leads to a fitting end that is sure to leave a lasting impression on the audiance.

If anyone wants to know the perfect way to start an event of, THIS is it. Waid unleashes Waller’s plans with a multi-layered front. The writing depicts a reflection of society in its flawed sense of belief. Seeing Waller weave a false narrative camouflages readers to her true intent. Its’ impact can be measured on one certain character’s reaction which spoke volumes to the threat at hand.

Seeing Batman caught off-guard is an image fans won’t be able to process. There is a sense of uncertainty that looms heavy. This is brought to a fever pitch with Waller playing a wild card that will create quite the stir. It is perfectly worded: “Waller’s not playing Chess … she’s rolling tanks”. Unveiling the true attack, the writing shows the ruthlessness of Waller. This leads right into the closing act. With the frantic scrambling, one hero seems next in line to fall. Welcome to a new age of terror.

Mora and Sánchez brings Waller’s frightening world to disturbing life. The opening sequence involving Superman sets a high tempo of suspense. This is capped off with a bold full page picture of a fallen Man of Steel. It is a defining portrait of what lies ahead.

Waller’s mannerisms also tell quite the story. The cold and stoic demeanor dominates each panel. Readers won’t be able to shake what is unfolding before their eyes. This leads into a two page splash of the true attack on display. Seeing the multi-planned onslaught raises the stakes even higher. There is no doubt of the heroes’ losing conflict. The art team gives readers a few more shocks on the way to the close. With its’ final shot, the art team caps off an event of epic proportions.

In one calculated strike, the entire DC Universe is put on notice that their time is up. Waid crafts a multi-layered story with superb writing. The electric artwork of Mora and Sánchez will leave readers in awe of the shocking and thrilling onslaught. Once the last page is read, there is no doubt the quest for power shows no mercy.

The issue is broken into three separate Stages:

Stage #1 by Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Skylar Patridge, Patricio Delpeche, and Steve Wands centers around Jay Nakamura. On Gammora Island, Waller has taken out its’ president. Nakamura is next on the list, but where does Dreamer’s loyalties lie?

Stage #2 by Waid, Chip Zdarsky, V. Ken Marion, Delpeche and Wands features the latest “recruit” of the Suicide Squad: John Starr aka Time Commander. Waller has a certain mission for Starr’s skills. The mission is not one of enjoyment. Starr is given the task of bringing back a robotic evil that took a combined effort of the Bat-Family to defeat!

Stage #3 by Joshua Williamson, Gleb Melnikov and Wands serves as an epilogue to the “House Of Brainiac” storyline in Action Comics and Superman. With a very big loose end to address, Waller takes it upon herself to handle this variable. What results may be the final piece to her puzzle of Absolute Power!

If anyone is new to the world of Amanda Waller, this book will give you enough insight on why she is hated and feared in the DCU. Each stage shows a varying degree. The first is the effect of her presence on Dreamer.

Stage One is a heavily emotionally driven tale. The conversations with Nakamura and Dreamer will catch readers attention. Dreamer comes across as a sympathetic character caught between what’s right and what is perceived right by Waller. Where her character goes from here will be one story to watch moving forward.

Patridge and Delpeche focus much on the art on the facial reactions of the two leads. The anger and self loathing will lock in readers. The images connect how personal the actions and consequences are. In the conclusion, the panels tease what’s next. Will it be a road to redemption or slipping deeper into danger? Only time will tell.

Stage Two borrows a similar theme from the beginning stage. Starr is a reluctant character forced to work against his will. Knowing what lies ahead, the sense of danger and anxiety ring true. It serves as a gateway from Zdarsky’s Batman to the crossover. The story is a very quick one but does a fair job in explaining what is forthcoming in the event.

Marion crafts a fast moving tale with the writing team. The only moments of pause are Starr’s looks of peril. It never escapes reader’s attention as his fear of what is coming grows with each page. The near full page ending drives home the regret of what has transpired and how Starr is sinking quickly into a grave dug by Waller.

Arguably the strongest stage of all, Stage Three leaves no question at how heartless Waller can be to get what she wants. Her plan to influence an impressionable key player connects with readers. It is devious from start to finish. The concluding act drops a big exclamation point to casting the first shot into her enemies.

Melnikov brings out the best of Waller’s imposing personality. The reactions to events never rattle the head of Task Force X. This is easy to cypher when she puts her plans in motion. Seeing how she puts up a facade with the unknowing victim echoes the lines crossed for her impending victory. The stage is capped off with a full page spread welcoming the beginning of the end. Brace for impact.

FINAL POINT: 8

Welcome to a new era of danger courtesy of Amanda Waller. Each stage serves as a compliment to previous stories, but is a solid entry point for new readers. The writing goes to great lengths to amplify what Waller is capable of. The art plays off the emotional pull of the reluctant characters turned pawns in the quest for Absolute Power.

BATMAN AND ROBIN #10 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points!

For this entry, the first family of Gotham are down but not out. Man-Bat has emerged as the mastermind of a new “revolution” in Batman’s city. Robin has had ghosts from his past re-emerge. A lost love with an agenda. Another with a score to settle.

Suffice to say, the dynamic duo has their hands full!

BATMAN AND ROBIN #10 by Joshua Williamson, Nikola Čižmešija, Simone Di Meo, Rex Lokus, Giovanna Niro and Steve Wands (DC Comics) sees both heroes poised to the brink.

Let’s not delay any longer and dive into the action.

The chapter opens with Man-Bat gloating about his perceived victory. Flying through the Gotham skyline, he has a prisoner in tow. Batman is shackled and along for the ride. This is ended by a flying “R” which hits the chains.

Now freed, The Dynamic Duo is back! Man-Bat’s cult leads an attack but is easily thwarted. In it aftermath, a call is made. Batman continues to go after Man-Bat. Robin is in chase to stop the hundreds of toxic-infected bats flying into the city. Can they save the day yet again?

Readers ride-along as the pair heads right into danger. Pacing ushers the excitement to a steady confrontation. In its’ wake, some loose ends are tied up. More importantly, some other avenues of adventure are left open. None will be more important than the final page reveal. A dark moment in the Wayne family is about to be revisited. Get Ready!

Williamson presents a steady finale to the current arc. Since it's beginning, the series has been anchored by the rebuilding family bond. With this chapter, the pair make great strides forward. Seeing the dialogue with Robin calling the shots was a strong point of change.

The conclusion of conflict was also another highlight. The writing kept things progressing with ease as the pair took the upper hand. It's fallout circles back to their struggles of rebuilding. The moment is poignant as to letting much needed healing starts (however short lived). It's another factor of why this series stands out from the other Bat books.

Art duties are split again which both teams leaving memorable images. De Meo and Niro kicks the story into gear with a gorgeous two page splash. Man-Bat’s depiction here carries a distinct horror feel. This leads into another two page spread that kicks off the final stand in style.

The family gets a quiet moment to regroup after everything via Čižmešija and Locus. Readers see the slow repair of the family’s broken bond via the emotions. It is a fleeting moment due to the set-up for the close, but hits its’ mark. The full page shot to conclude the issue with will most certainly have fans talking after witnessing it.

FINAL POINT: 8.6

With not a moment to spare, Gotham’s most famous father and son aim to end Man-Bat’s schemes once and for all. Williamson stacks the deck with a balance of family drama and fast paced action. The art teams craft a solid finale with more clues to where the pair’s journey to healing and heroics lead. There’s much to enjoy with this series!

With Gotham City slipping further in Failsafe 's control, Batman takes one last attempt to stop his greatest creation.

Fast forward to the present and Bruce’s reservations prove to be true. With Failsafe running loose in Gotham, Batman prepares to make his stand. Tim Drake lowers into a cave. Bruce gives the signal to contact “The Family”.

Meanwhile, Damian Wayne has become a prisoner to Failsafe and his new “Robin.” Damian gives fair warning about what he is going to do. Failsafe ends his attempt for help with a pre-set trap. The new Dynamic Dup is poised to “Cure” Gotham.

Readers see the key players set in place as the roads lead to one stop. Before that gets there, a LONG overdue plot point is addressed. Before battle, Bruce does something which many fans have been waiting to see since “Knight Terrors” ended.

From that moment, it is game on! Blackgate Prison becomes center stage. Batman vs. Failsafe! Winner take all! The action speeds things at a high pace. Multiple characters are featured in between the action. Its’ resolution is a surprise one but pays off big. This leads into another confrontation that cements the winner’s status as Gotham’s protector. The final page is a perfect send-off to where this chapter closes.

Zdarsky gives readers a massive payoff for a few threads he has been placing in his run. Captio lurking throughout this saga finally has a good purpose with the conclusion. There is a solid sequence in the closing act where the teacher becomes the student in their dialogue.

The writings’ strength is the long overdue conversation between Bruce and the Bat-Family. In Zdarsky’s run, their relationship has been continuously fractured. Before combat, Bruce does the one thing that many have been waiting for. This leads into a grounded moment that can only go upward. The resolution is very smart and gives a fitting end to this story for now. There’s a lot for superhero fans to enjoy with this one.

Jiménez and Morey feature Bruce in a rotating emotional state. The meeting with the Bat Family ranges from disappointment to new found confidence. This rolls into the final showdown flawlessly. The full page image of Batman at Blackgate changes the mood instantly. Action spirals out of organized chaos with the multiple battles taking place. There is absolutely no way to be let down by the panels featured. The chapter is closed off with an iconic shot that ushers in the next phase of the first family of Gotham. Nothing but win.

The Fall and Rise of Bruce Wayne comes to a fever pitch with this strong finale. Zdarsky dives into a few themes that hit their marks with a bullseye. Jiménez, Morey and Cowles hold nothing back when it comes to the action and danger in a face-off fans won’t want to miss!

The narration walks readers through Batman’s assessment of the current situation. Who would have thought so much centered around asking for a match to light a cigarette.

Meanwhile, Addie and Aiden Cobblepot are dealing with an Intergang representative from Metropolis. Shipments haven’t been making their deliveries. This proves to be a problem for the family business. Readers see who is responsible for the derailment of product: Batman.

All the while, Penguin is watching events unfold. How does Oswald see things going from here. Readers watch as tensions become even higher as the attack on Cobblepot’s children intensifies. This builds towards a moment that cements who is the heir to the throne of Gotham. It defines what many have suspected for quite some time. Events spirals into a desperate play by one figure. A parting image raises more questions as the battle of legacy rages onward.

King dives into the unique perspectives of the characters at play. Allowing their narrations to dominate most pages helps with this chapter. Giving that insight to the reader only amplifies what’s unfolding even more. This plays heavily into arguably the breakout character of this issue: Addie Cobblepot.

King’s writing depicts her as ruthless as her father. Through the course of the issue, she slowly starts breaking from the pressure of her father’s plans. This leads to a confrontation where it becomes clear she’s already lost her claim to the throne.

Oswald’s quiet scheming takes a grander role as events unfold. King slows down the pace to build up the eventual move. Once Penguin strikes, the moment hits readers with full force. The cutting dialogue given leaves a chilling reality in its wake. Oswald Cobblepot is back with a vengeance.

De Latorre and Maiolo blend in themes of defiance and mystery throughout the issue. The rooftop scene is capped off with a well paced full page of Batman and Penguin talking The frustration and rage on Addie’s face tells a bigger story as her grasp if the city slips. Her conversations with Oswald and Aiden conveys that point with ease. Knowing what is looming, readers bear witness to her slow breakdown.

However, the pages that will be most talked about are Oswald’s “message” to Aiden. The two page splash makes a very loud statement. It holds nothing back as Oswald makes a bold announcement with his actions. The imagery around this section holds nothing back. There’s no question about what unfolds. A play is made that the city may not be ready for. This spells nothing but win for the audience watching Gotham pushed to its edge.

With multiple narration leading the way, Oswald Cobblepot’s family feud approaches its climatic end. King’s creative approach sells the dark times ahead with strong writing. De Latorre and Maiolo pace out the drama with exceptional images. Gotham had better brace for what’s coming next!

Meanwhile, Damian and Flatline have entered into a dangerous location: High School. Damian fully believes that Principal Stone is his old trainer from the League of Assassins. Options are limited to get Stone away from the other students. Drastic times call for drastic measures. A fight ensues but not one readers might immediately think.

This leads to a showdown building for a few issues now. Is Principal Stone Mistress Harsh? Shish? Or someone else? The answer starts a domino effect that draws out another big reveal. Readers will have much to break down as things come into focus.

Its’ fallout sends the young hero on a new path. The closing pages builds the danger as Damian closes in on his fathers whereabouts. Once arriving, it is clear to see he has more than he bargained for. The final image speaks volumes as readers brace for what’s coming next.

Williamson gifts a healthy portion of this issue to Damian’s story. The high school times have been a refreshing break from the other Bat books. Seeing Damian actually be a kid instead of Robin will win over readers. The showdowns unfolding clear up some lingering plot points. The pacing keeps events moving without lingering too long for the fallout. Once the final act being, writing hits its’ main points while bowing out on a sold end note for now.

Art duties are spilt with a returning Di Meo and Niro heading up the Batman areas. The introduction to the Bat-Cave 2.0 is presented with an excellent two-page splash. Man-Bat’s gloating comes off as both menacing and leveling up from where he’s been. This is complemented later in the book with another strong two-page spread.

Čižmešija and Lokus tackle the high school. Spotlighting Damian being young and foolish works to kick his story into high gear. The Shush segments get a two page splash that will answer a few points for fans. The art brings out the best of Damian’s reactions to news as he heads into the action. The spilt art teams brought much for fans to be amped up for heading into the promising next chapter.

With Man-Bat nearing completion of his plans, Damian Wayne’s luck appears to be turning with this latest chapter. Williamson gifts fans payoffs for certain plot points with the writing. Batman has cracked into every electronic device in Gotham City. This serves as fuel to his twisted version of protecting the citizens. Damian is all too excited to be reconnecting with his dad on their missons. The feelings aren’t mutual as Failsafe brushes them off. Something has drawn the machines attention away….

Readers find out that the reason is Gotham’s new Police Commissioner. His name is VANDAL SAVAGE! Savage addresses the city. A protester takes aim and fires a gunshot. Batman jumps in front and subdues the attacker. Savage and Batman have a public stand-off with the world watching.

One of those people: Amanda Waller. Waller sees the big picture. How does this Batman fit into her plans? And what of Bruce Wayne? On the run and outmatched by his own creation, Wayne takes things back to basics as he tries reclaiming his identity.

Wayne gets a familiar assistant to help on his new plan. Timing couldn’t be better. Waller is making moves that only spell disaster for Batman. With Failsafe growing its’ strength every day, the final image gives some hope that all might not be lost. Buckle in as things are about to get moving very, very fast.

Zdarsky juggles around many multiple personalities in this chapter. The addition of Amanda Waller elevates Failsafe’s impact on Gotham. Knowing that “Absolute Power” is a short time away, their conversation comes off as a moment that lights the match for a bigger explosion. Failsafe’s reactions to their talk reflects Batman’s demeanor which is no stranger to Waller. How this ultimately plays out should be exciting.

Bruce’s portion of the story tells a few themes. The overall isolation he puts himself through carries a heavy weight. Seeing the reluctance for help ties back into how Bats feels he is the only option to save the day. Zdarsky provides a needed reset with who joins Bat’s cause. Their interactions prove to be the catalyst for the road to redemption.

Jiménez and Morey give Damian Wayne fans much to rave about. Damian’s big fight moment is started with a near full page image. This leads into a big revelation later in the book. Once that information sinks in, the art team instantly switches his emotions from happy to rageful. Failsafe provides an introduction to a new character via a bold full page debut.

Bruce is also displaying his emotions of doubt with a much-needed talk. The panels mirror the realization of what he has done. It also gives readers a sense that he Can’t win this fight. However, their fears are put to ease with the closing page. The full image sets the tone for what’s coming next with a strong mic drop moment.

With Gotham and his confidence slipping further away, Bruce Wayne gets some much needed help to reclaim his city and identity. Zdarsky sets up some unique pairings with the writing. Jiménez, Morey and Cowles grant fans a vivid picture of the new era of justice along with a glimmer of hope. A showdown is brewing that cannot be missed!

This chapter begins with two thugs setting a bomb. As they work away, the narration eludes to someone overseeing the bigger picture. The bomb explodes. The building was the Martha Wayne day Care Center. The voice: Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin.

The story shifts to a rooftop. Batman is shaking down Cobblepot for information. With twelve bombings happing in his city, Batman isn’t letting this slide. An ultimatum is given. Cobblepot obliges. Two names are given. They are Aiden* and Addison Cobblepot!

Readers watch as the Penguin needs to find a way to stay off Batman’s radar to handle his children personally. Plus, what does Lisa St. Claire have up her sleeve? If that last name sounds familiar to Bat fans, it should.

With the drama unfolding, the closing moments throw everything into flux. A new player is brought into the story. Their effect on Oswalt speaks volumes as the final page concludes events with a loud statement.

King leans heavily into the family dynamic of the Penguin and his children. The writing is fearless as Oswalt doesn't hesitate to assert himself into his drama while showing other sides of his characters. the standout player in this issue is Lisa St. Claire. With no pause, her scheming jumps out to readers amongst others. Seeing Batman frustrated with the case events in another big moment. This builds up to a strong final act that is sure to have a huge payout next issue.

De latorre and Maiolo keep the grittiness of Gotham front and center while the drama builds. The rooftop images of Batman and Penguin keep the intensity growing. It leads to a full page panel that sets the tone for the remainder of the book.

Batman’s time in the book felt impactful with each panel. His reactions to Cobblepot’s case carried heavy weight. The moments with Bats and Commissioner Gordon show the ware the Penguin’s family actions are taking. It leads to an excellent shot of Batman heading right into the belly of the beast: the Iceberg Lounge. With images like this, the conclusion will be one fans won’t forget anytime soon.

While in pursuit of Man-Bat, The dynamic duo has some company crash their investigation. Flatline, who has a history with Damian Wayne has arrived in Gotham. Her mission is to find her missing sister Mila. Batman gives the go ahead for Damian to help her.

In his absence, an unlikely figure enters the equation. Shush has been helping Man-Bat on his latest caper. It appears as she’s changed sides. She approaches Batman with an offer he might not be able to turn down.

This issue begins with a flashback of Mila telling her story. Readers find out that she’s not exactly lost. Mila has taken up the family business of crime. This doesn’t sit well with Robin. However, Flatline proves “blood is thicker than water.” Flatline sets up the distraction allowing Mila to escape.

Meanwhile, Batman is listening to Shush’s pitch for teaming up. The only question is that of trust. Can Batman really side with someone who’s identity reflects a dangerous rogue. Shush gives slight insight as she leads Batman into a possible break in the case. After they arrive, it seems as their luck may have run out.

How does events play for both heroes? Being split away, each has their own troubles to deal with. The action doesn’t break from its standard as conflicts arise. Once the fallout begins, it leaves one hero with an unlikely partner to pick up the pieces of the case.

Williamson breaks the issue into two very separate tales. The Flatline story gives fans a showcase into Damian that we rarely see. The emotional reactions to Flatline’s actions jump out. Seeing the usual focused Robin acting a tad reckless was a solid twist. Heading into the close, it will be a fun dynamic to see where things go for Damian form here.

As for Bats, its’ business as usual. Shush is written as a character of mystery. She doesn’t stray too far off the path. Seeing her drama play out with Man-Bat kept readers waiting to see her true motives. The ending is a bit of a surprise that will only have fans talking until the next chapter.

Čižmešija and Lokus step in for art duties with this issue. The opening moment with Batman and Shush is given a near two full page spread. It gives the moment weight as the sensing of motives play out. The same can be said for the Man-Bat appearances. The panels express the villain’s rage with Batman closing in.

The Robin/Flatline saga is gifted strong action panels. One scenario is with Robin and his mobile. The pace rushes through the art as the conclusion is sudden. It leads into more personal moments later heading towards the closing pages. The parting shot sets up a shift in events that will be ones fans will want to keep an eye on.

With the appearance of Flatline, the dynamic duo is split from their case. Williamson mixes in big drama with exciting moments to move events along. Čižmešija, Lokus and Wands give both stories their own distinct looks with distinct images showcasing both leads. The main story begin with a body being thrown out a window. The airborne figure is Killer Croc. Standing in the broken window frame is the duo of Failsafe and Robin (Damian Wayne). Croc is just another criminal defeated by the extreme measures of Failsafe.

Batgirl (Stephanie Brown) crashes the scene. She tries pleading with Damian about how wrong the new directive is. Damian brushes the pleas off. Failsafe ignores the wishes as well. The cold conversation proves there is dwindling hope that the Batman they know lies inside the robotic body.

Meanwhile, Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon are having a conference call with other DC heroes. The topic is how to handle this new version of Bruce Wayne.

That’s also the topic of discussion from a Blackgate prison cell. Bruce Wayne is plotting an escape from his cell and cellmate: The Joker. Batman will need some luck to pull this. To escape, he needs a distraction. As luck would have it, he gets that intervention as Punchline is the next prisoner brought in

How does this all play out? Readers watch as Batman makes a last-ditch effort to run. The pace speeds with time not on Bat’s side. Factor in the Joker and Punchline looming in the background and there is no easy way out. Plus, Failsafe keeps progressing forward! Just wait for the final pages to play out as the parting image solidifies this is anything but over.

Zdarksy pens Failsafe making a bold public statement right off the bat. The effortless handling of Killer Croc sends shockwaves. This begins a merciless run with some of DC’s more noteworthy personalities. None more greater than the last encounter for this chapter. Failsafe’s dialogue is cold and unapologetic in response to this moment. Considering the parties involved, readers will have a vested focus on the pair’s next encounter.

Bruce Wayne is showcased at a very low point. Knowing his enemy is a more ruthless version of himself, the challenge is even greater. The pacing reflects the frantic attempt of freedom. Its’ fallout sets more in motion. This all builds for a great close to a very engaging tale.

Jiménez and Morey kick things off with a loud debut of Croc being thrown through a high-rise office window. Cowles’ lettering is the needed piece to exemplify this starting point. The escape from Failsafe prison is given a strong split panel page. With one half featuring the trouble, the other shows Bruce Wayne ready to take the first step to victory.

Failsafe has big interactions spin out of the Croc arrest Fans will be locked in as the Robotic Crusader crashes and apprehends a big name in the DCU. This pleads into the final encounter with a flagship DCU hero. The body language displayed shows readers that this is not the pair of old friends. This moment is two strangers staking their claims to what is unfolding next. The closing images raise the bar for what is coming next, which is another great chapter for fans.

With a new dynamic duo running loose in Gotham, Batman struggles to find a way to right this wrong. Zdarsky give readers a tale of two Batman with excellent writing. Jiménez, Morey and Cowles let the new Caped Crusader run wild with dynamic imagery. The new era of justice continues on with a chapter fans won’t want to miss.

Years ago in Gotham City, The World’s Finest swoop into a casino in danger. The attendees are running from a poisonous green gas. Inside is the clown prince of crime, The Joker. Superman inhales the deadly gas and takes it into space. Batman breaks thru a door to confront his old enemy.

Once defeated, Joker is transported by the pair to Arkham Asylum. Even put in a straightjacket, Batman warns the doctor nearby to be careful. The doctor hears the warning and the heroes leave. Suddenly, the doctor reveals he’s wearing a mask. Behind the disguise is non e other than Lex Luthor!

Readers see that Luthor breaks Joker out for a mission all their own. A map of a madman could lead to immense power. For all his smarts, Luthor and his team can’t crack its code. The solution: bring in another madman to break the encryption. Simple, right?

With these two combustible personalities, its anything but. Their path leads into places that defy logic. On the way, their conversations provides an insight that will be a hit with the audience.

Will this pair reach their goal? The final act provides a definitive answer as it marks a beginning of a deadly new pairing for years to come.

Waid dives back into the first meeting theme with another great chapter. The dynamic between Luthor and Joker has always been a tense one. Waid never lets that escape the pair’s different motives for their caper.

Pacing helps keep the unpredictability rolling through the story. The best example of this is the pint where Luthor and Joker have a “heart to heart” about motivation. This moment lights the match for the eventful blow-up later. Let’s face it, with the Joker involved, does anything run smoothly? The closing act plays into what some may expect, but its not a bad thing. Events wrap up with an excellent final page. It leaves a lasting point for stories to follow involving these two legendary evils.

The art captures a vintage time early in the World’s Finest time. Joker has a classic purple suit of the times. Pugh shows the insanity of the Joker in a mid-panel, demonstrating them being “twinsies”.

This leads into a journey reflecting the script key Joker is translating. The images give a sense of magic and wonder. This gets a break with a full page panel showing the breakdown from Luthor and Joker’s perspective. The back and forth game between the pair exemplifies the unpredictability of their team-up. The parting image is a solid way to end one chapter and start many more throughout the years.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

The ultimate odd couple stands out in an unforgettable first meeting. Waid takes readers back in time with a classic story. The art demonstrates their unlikely methods of teamwork with solid imagery that fits such a vintage tail. Readers will be very pleased to see this piece of DC history hit the LCS.

A voice narrates the skyline of Gotham City. The mood is dark. A figure is standing in the shadows of the rooftops. The narrator leads the reader into their disdain for Batman and his “soldiers”.

The voice is revealed to be Dr. Kirk Langstrom aka Man-Bat. Man-Bat is standing over a group of masked figures. His speech is leading the mob to “take their image back”. Soaking in the adoration, another figure isn’t so keen with Man-Bat’s pampering. Shush is frustrated at the pause in plans to take down Batman and Robin. Man-Bat tries re-assuring her that the plan is still on track and to be patient.

Meanwhile, the dynamic duo has someone else crash their investigation. Flatline has caught up with her “close” friend Damian Wayne. She’s in Gotham looking for her sister Mila. However, readers soon find out that a simple search mission might be more than it seems.

What secrets is Flatline hiding? How does her arrival change the search for Man-Bat? The action shifts into a new direction as Damian’s heart guides his actions. Reveals unfold heavily in the closing pages. The final image throws everything in flux, much to fans delight.

Williamson continues to impress with this series. The latest chapter gives readers an insight on Damian rarely seen. With Flatline in the mix, the usually brooding Damian fades away. In its’ place is a teenage boy hanging out with his first love. It’s a stark contrast but one that proves to hit its’ mark.

Batman’s reactions are priceless including a certain one liner about “One Not To Lecture”. It’s a refreshing change that leaning into the strong family dynamic that makes this series such a hit.

Di Meo returns after being off the previous two issues and wastes no time bringing the excitement with Niro and Wands. There is an incredible two-page spread showcasing Batman and his “soldiers”. The flashback panels of Flatline and Robin make for a nice break in the action. Damian’s reactions throughout the issue bring the hidden “human” side of him to the readers.

The action sequences are gifted another excellent two-page shot of Flatline and Robin handling trouble. The Batman panels are perfectly set up right till the final image. Once readers see that, the whole story is turned on its axis. It’s another high level craft of storytelling.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

The family bond between father and son has some competition when first love comes to town in this latest chapter. Williamson balances the serious case with family bonding like no one else. Di Meo’s return brings an electric feel to the brooding Gotham City for a chapter you won’t want to miss.

Bruce Wayne is processing what he’s just heard. The Joker has unloaded secrets to him. Is it possible that one of Batman’s mentors also trained the Joker? The pieces are coming together as the pair discuss. Joker is in his glory seeing his greatest rival struggle.

Meanwhile, It’s been weeks without Batman in the streets. Criminals are making moves. A heist in Gotham is loudly interrupted by missiles flying into a tractor trailer. Instantly, the mood changes. The criminals know who’s coming. They’re brutally taken out one by one. A lone survivor is picked out to rely a message.

That message: “BATMAN IS BACK”

However, it’s not Bruce Wayne. It’s Failsafe. A new era of fighting crime in Gotham has been born. How does the public react to the new “Batman”? What of Bruce Wayne? Can he escape Failsafe’s grasp?

Readers watch as Failsafe makes an impact with not only the citizens of Gotham, but the Bat-Family itself. As for Bruce Wayne, his path to reclaiming the mantle is thrown into discourse. Just when he thinks he has hope, Failsafe has already made plans to thwart them.

Judging by the final moments, another surprise factor has been injected into the mix. Bruce Wayne has been challenged but his limits will be tested like never before with this latest story.

There is also a backup story from Zdarsky, Michele Bandini, Alex Sinclair and Clayton Cowles that gives more depth to the Joker’s connection with Dr. Captio.

Zdarsky paints a bleak future for Batman in this latest story. The back and forth with Joker drives home the point of Batman’s worst nightmare coming true. Failsafe’s assault on Gotham comes off flawlessly and defiantly. The writing of the Bat Family only elevate the threat level.

Bruce’s frantic attempt to escape leads readers into a path unexpected. Knowing this is the culmination of a perfect Batman, the writing shows how mistaken the intentions can be. The closing chapter leaves a unique close with a character’s involvement affecting Bruce’s situation. It’s a solid opening chapter with many miles to go.

Jimenez and Morey give Failsafe a dramatic entrance with a strong full page image. The frustration of Wayne to the situation is an easy connection with readers. His mannerisms scream doubt and defeat.

This builds towards a dramatic apprehension of a classic rogue. The half page panel sets up the impact of Failsafe of Gotham residents clearly. The final page leaves readers with a parting shot to discuss before searching for more answers next issue. It’s a high level of visuals as always with this art team.

FINAL POINT: 8.5

Failsafe stakes its’ claim as Gotham City’s protector with a strong outing. Zdarsky constructs this new era with excellent writing. Jimenez, Morey and Cowles’ engaging art gifts readers with a visual impression that hits its’ marks. The new stat quo of Batman has arrived, whether the DCU is ready or not.

After being a mistreated bartender at The Falcone-owned Iceberg Lounge, Cobblepot gets on the radar of Batman. With a loose agreement, Cobblepot begins working with the Dark Knight to take down Falcone. Once their deal is done, Cobblepot starts teasing the readers to what his true endgame is? Was it revenge on the crime family who mocked him or was this a long play after all?

This issue begins one year after Falcone was taken out. Penguin is running things in the casino. He asks one of Falcone’s former employees about finding the muscle behind Falcone’s moves. Penguin is given a business card. The gesture is returned with a knife through the neck courtesy of Penguin. Readers see the name on the card as “The Help”.

At this time, a young Jim Gordan answers a call from Penquin addressing the rampant crime in the city. This prompts a call to Batman. The weapon Penguin used to kill is recovered. The chase leads to a confrontation between Bats and Penguin. After some questioning, the suspect shifts away from Penguin onto another target.

Who is the next target on Penguin’s hit list? Readers see how the set-up plays out in the ever-changing movement of the unlikely pair’s journey. The sense of tension never escapes the page. This plays heavily into the closing moments. A shocking event begins which will have readers guessing until the next chapter drops. Just wait until you see that final page!

King excels at showing how layered Cobblepot early days were. Is he playing the long game of working Batman? Does he have plans all his own? The writing dives into the uneasiness of the new partnership. Doubt and suspension linger in the air. This leads readers into seeing a new side of Cobblepot. The shifting of gears continues to be a strong point of this series. With a shocking final page, there will be much to discuss.

Subic steps in for art duties on this story. The vision of Penguin comes off as cunning and misleading. The conversation with him and Batman demonstrates the swings in behavior. This leads into a solid full page image of Penguin stating in the center of Gotham.

The visuals of Penguin running the casino further illustrates what makes him dangerous. The unsettling nature shines through each panel. This all builds towards a show-stopping final full page that will have many fans excited for what’s next.

The secrets behind Cobblepot’s past give a great insight to the ascension in the criminal ranks with this strong issue. King’s writing demonstrates Cobblepot’s maneuvering and deceptions perfectly. Subic Maiolo, and Cowles stage the visuals for an easy win with readers. Just when yo think you have the answers, the final mage changes the questions. Prepare for quite the entertaining issue.

A trip to Earth 22 for a rescue mission hasn’t gone exactly as planned. Now, BATMAN and SUPERMAN must find a way to stop Darkseid capturing the Anti-Life equation or it will truly be “KINGDOM COME”.

When a missing apprentice (David Sikela aka Thunderman) is found to be on Earth-22, Batman and Superman attempt to find the young hero and return him home. The planet he is residing on is one longtime DC fans know. It is the home of the legendary series Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross.

Upon arrival, they come face-to-face with a distorted version of their world. GOG is ruling over the land. His protege is the missing Sikela, whom is now known as MAGOG! Gog is planning on leading Earth’s heroes into a war with APOKOLIPS. This is stopped by Batman, Superman and some notable DC heroes.

However, it’s not enough to stop Darseid from entering the fray. Gog has something he wants: a part of the Anti-Life equation.

This issue begins with the shocking looks of the remaining DC heroes. Superman teams up with his Earth-22 counterpart to slow Darkseid down. Batman signals for the others to regroup. The action ramps up as two Kryptonians try the impossible. Their efforts fall short. Other heroes try but fall short as well.

Once the dust settles, Darkseid attempts takes his shot at Gog. The only one left to stop him is Magog! What chance does the young hero have?

Readers see quickly that a choice is made that changes everything. It’s fallout challenges the two title characters more than anyone realizes. This leads into an emotional closing act that divulges many secrets. It’s a fitting conclusion that does proper justice to the original 1996 series. Brace for a highly impactful ending.

There is always a fine line of what defines a hero. With Waid’s first venture into this theme, readers witnessed how a drastic action can cause a spiral out of control. The journey of David Sikela has echoed that idea. The tutelage of Superman vs. Gog gives a backdrop to the presence of Darkseid. Sikela’s action hits readers with a painful picture of the future.

The writing showcases the bond between the World’s finest as well. With the closing act, their friendship support carries the heroes through a dark moment. This leads to a powerful close, circling back to what inspires all heroes: hope.

Mora and Bonvillian cap off events with strong imagery. Right from the start, the image of Darkseid and the heroes’ reaction sets a high bar for the remainder of the chapter. The fight scenes play off as bold and eye-catching each panel. After Sikela’s actions, the reactions of all parties range from shock to anger.

The full page panel of a haunting presence will full grab readers’ attention. This leads into a fantastic full page panel that answers some lingering questions. There is also a two-page spread that pays a great homage to the original source material. The chapter ends on such a high note that fans will want to dive back in just to stare at the art over and over alone.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

The Return to Kingdom Come doesn’t disappoint as the World’s Finest face a threat that hits close to the heart. Waid orchestrates an intense fallout with Mora providing mind-blowing visuals to bring the story to a thunderous close. This issue continues to cement this series’ place as one of (if not) the best superhero book at the LCS each time out.

For this entry, we are checking out the conclusion of the first year of evil in Gotham City. While being locked away by Batman’s own creation, the Dark Knight has a very familiar cell mate. The Joker has been broken and beaten by Failsafe. The question of “How did we get here” has spiraled into a tale of two stories.

One has looked back t the early days of the Clown Prince of Crime. The other is a future with the final battle between the long time enemies. Both have sparked much talk amongst Batman fans. Now arriving at the end, how will Joker’s stories end?

The final form of Evil. That is what Dr. Daniel Captio has created. After his rejection from Bruce Wayne in Batman: The Knight, Captio has come to Gotham to train Joker to be Batman’s ultimate rival. Captio’s work involves training Joker to have multiple personalities to handle situations. This mirrors Batman’s own Zur-En-Arrh. In Joker’s case, there are now three he can play with as needed.

Joker thanks Captio by killing him. Now without any fear holding him back, the reign of terror begins…

Meanwhile in the future, Joker has turned the residents of Gotham into versions of himself. During Batman’s investigation, he finds his Bat Family among the victims. Catwoman has kept them safe. However, Joker has thwarted the good intentions. With the Bat-Family poised to attack, Batman strives to survive.

This issue picks up with the family poised to attack. The older Batman throws all his smoke bombs to escape. With the family loose, trying to save the city looks bleak. It is even bleaker with the Joker in hot pursuit.

Back in the past, Bruce Wayne is hosting a fundraiser for the Gotham Opera. A suspended Jim Gordan calls into Batman informing of the corrupt officers tied to The Red Hood Gang. Commissioner McLeod is currently leading the gang. Gordan sees them making a move after a big drug bust. Taking a risk, he goes into the police station to spy without Batman.

Inside the precinct, Manny Gabris (another Red Hood Gang member) celebrates the big score. With strength in numbers and a plan in place, they look to rob the police station of drugs and evidence.

However, there is someone at the station filing a complaint. A clown with a very vested interest in the two prime members. All it takes is one reckless action by Gabris and all Hell breaks loose.

Readers watch along as all the combustible elements finally explode at the Gotham PD. Joker vs. his old Gang with Jim Gordon caught in the crossfire. How will Gordon last without Batman to help?

As for the future, the final confrontation between Batman and Joker comes to a dramatic finish. Can Gotham be saved or has the Joker accomplished his endgame?

With each conclusion, each question is answered. Both stories conclude on a strong note. The past ends with a lasting moment for the ages. The future ending leaves a question for readers to ponder as they read Joker stories from here on out. It is a fitting bookend for a character who truly defines brilliant insanity.

Zdarsky plays up to Joker’s strengths with this final chapter. In the early days, the evolution of Joker’s planning is in full display. The attack on the former gang hits with precision. Even with the chaos around him, Joker navigates it to connect on his targets. Gordon’s portion with this story stands out as well. The way he thwarts McLeod’s plans is vintage Gordon. It also might play into Joker’s attacks on the Gordon family down the road. The final moments are a great homage to “A Bronx Tale”.

The future story is a great final encounter diving back into the Love/Hate relationship between Batman and Joker. The old rivals know each other so well, yet there is something new learned in this encounter. Zarsky builds this element right to the conclusion. The ending moments leave readers with the parting shot and a new perspective. It’s a fitting conclusion for the closing chess match between the historic rivals.

The art teams showcase the multiple levels to each take. Camuncoli and company make the Gotham PD into a warzone in a short amount of time. Once Garbis makes his move, the imagery reflects the speed of the story. not lost in this is Joker’s laughing and evil smile. This is exemplified with a full page image revealing his true nature to those around him. The sadistic nature of Joker plays through right to the ending. It’s a fitting close as a new chapter begins.

The history of the Clown Prince of Crime shines with the closing chapter of Joker: Year One. Zdarsky takes readers into a thrill-ride of dark madness with superb writing. The art teams construct solid action and moody imagery to exemplify Joker’s terror. For anyone who wants to peek inside Joker’s mind, this story needs to be in your collection.
