For this entry, the DC Universe is reeling from an attack no one was coming. When an alien threat is unleashed from its prison, the premier superhero squad in the “Dawn Of DC” era stepped up to the challenge. They are The Titans. One titan in particular pushed himself to unknown limits.

No good deed goes unpunished as a surprise attack thrusts Gar Logan aka Beast Boy into a spotlight unwelcomed. His powers manipulated. They have now caused a global attack onto the people of Earth. With last issue’s shocking move, the battle has taken a deadly toll on the hero community. How will the rest of DC’s finest recover?

Amanda Waller always has a plan. With the rise of the Titans in the Justice League’s place, Waller sets forth a movement which spells nothing good for the DCU heroes.

Using Doctor Hate to manipulate Beast Boy’s form as Starro, Waller has unleashed a public attack on Earth. People are turning into animal hybrids. Even with the efforts of the heroes to try stopping the mayhem, they are only having small success. As the public watches, Waller works in the shadows to push her own agenda.

Using a hesitant Chester Runk (aka Chunk), who can unleash a “black hole” opening to another dimension, Waller teleports him inside Logan’s unconscious gigantic husk. The use of his powers kills him and Logan.

As this chapter opens, the heroes trying to stop Logan pay their respects to their fallen ally. One hero isn’t in the mood to grieve. Raven, fellow Titan and Gar’s girlfriend notes that someone else was pulling some strings and she intends to give them some payback.

On Earth, a press conference is taking place in Washington. The president is acknowledging the actions of the Bureau of Sovereignty for taking out Logan. He also brings the mastermind behind the attack into the public eye. Waller addresses the public and sells the story of protection from the superheroes.

Readers see her paint the picture of Runk as a noble citizen risking it all for their safety. With the ploy of swaying public opinion to her cause, Waller drops another bombshell with her next plan of attack.

How desperate is Waller willing to go? Readers find out quickly that there is a reason Waller is one of the most feared forces in the entire DC Universe. How will the heroes react?

As the playing field is now set, it’s race against time for the Titans as Waller’s plans are in full motion. The closing act gives more clarity onto where things head now, but the final image sets forth an unseen dynamic. With the stakes being raised higher, all bets are off to the fate of the DCU after this event.

If readers weren’t sure why Amanda Waller is such an imposing force in DC Comics, Taylor devotes an ample amount of page time to drive that point home. The writing reflects how driven she is without a shred of emotion affecting her. Once readers realize what she’s planning on doing, it brings a sense of fear and shock to the levels to secure victory.

There is a conversation involving Nightwing and Waller that sets up an ultimate chess match of good and evil. The dialogue involved hits multiple points with one verbal jab that goes for a knockout. The rest of the issue focuses on reacting to Waller’s moves. This builds into an emotionally charged closing pages. The final panel sets up many questions as Taylor is pulling out more shocks to usher this event into its’ next phase.

The art duties are spilt for this tale. Reis brings the coldness of Waller’s address to the pages with a intimidating feel. the mannerisms in which she drives her points will send a clear message to the audience about the way she is willing to conduct business. This counters Raven’ reflections of losing her boyfriend due to Waller.

There are a few action sequences to break up the heavy dialogue. It adds more to the confrontation in the latter portion of the book. Once that moment kicks off, readers begin to see the start of a true test of wills. This all leads to a shocking parting image which leaves many questions. With the new dynamic involved, it is anyone’s guess where Waller’s plans take readers next.

The reveal of Amanda Waller’s plans drives home the sense of danger surrounding “Beast World”. With Taylor’s unapologetic approach to Waller’s vision leading the way, readers will get caught up in the creative team’s positioning of key players with their strong artwork. With the fate of the DCU now in the crossfire, readers can’t afford to miss this story.

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #23 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, “Kingdom Come” has become a reality for a pair of iconic superheroes. With this current story arc, BATMAN and SUPERMAN embarked on a simple rescue mission. What they got instead is a nightmarish scenario that longtime DC Comics fans know all too well. Considering the events of last issue, time is running out on any chance to save this world from a fate no one deserves.

On Earth-22, there is one ruler: COG! He has taken on an apprentice: David Sikela aka Thunderman. Cog gives him a new name: MAGOG. The name means “Gateway”. Magog is imperative to his plans of leading the heroes of Earth into a war on APOKOLIPS! Cog sells the dream of divine ascension following him into battle. Little does anyone know, this is all a ruse for something more evil.

With Sikela’s powers used to fuel this trip, Cog is on the brink of success. Luckily, his plans are interrupted by an unlikely group.

Batman and Superman are joined by their Earth-22 counterparts, who have been swayed to see through Cog’s lies. With the Batmen focusing their attack on Sikela, The Supermen take aim at Cog! The battles become intense as one refuses to see the truth while another is blind from his own delusions.

Readers bare witness to battles fitting of the stakes. Even with a major turning point, can the heroes find a way to win? Judging by the final page, there is a whole other level of danger that just entered the game of good vs. evil.

Even with all the action, Waid keeps things geared around Sikela’s destined path. The initial moments with Cog selling his plan creates a sense of uncertainty with the young follower blindly absorbing the lies. Once the heroes arrive, the shift in the story is undeniable.

The Supermen showcase the unending hope synonymous with the Man of Steel. Even in the face of danger, the unending hope never stalls. Meanwhile, Batman trying to reason with Sikela are moments that will stick with the readers. The end results provide an aura of excitement leading into the shocking final page. There’s always a high level of writing with this series and much for fans to enjoy.

Few come near the artistic heights of action like Dan Mora. The heroes make a dramatic entrance with a full page panel. From here, the pace never slows down. The art mirrors the rage and emotions with trying to stop Cog at all costs. In between all the fighting, the close up’s of “Magog” prove how Batman’s words are just as sharp as his strikes.

The fallout results one epic two page spread starting the next round of conflict. Mora and Bonvillain bring an end to a fight with a superb full page. The lettering of Wands ends events with a huge exclamation point. That said, the closing page will have readers talking and singing the praises of the creative team. It is no wonder why this series gets the accolades it does every time a new chapter drops.

With time slipping away, a final attack is launched. the World’s Finest are the only thing standing between life and death on Earth-22. The question is: will it be enough? Waid provides the foundation with emotional writing. Paired with the dynamic visuals of Mora, Bonvillian and Wands, and all shall be revealed in another excellent chapter.

With the disconnect from the rest of the family from “The Gotham War”, Bruce Wayne adjusts to a new stat quo. No longer at Wayne Manor, Bruce resides in a brownstone. Luckily for him, he’s not alone in this venture. His son Damian aka Robin stays with him. Both hope to repair a very strained relationship.

Part of this process has been working on an attempted case. Dr. Kafira was the intended target. Their investigation brought them face-to-face with an old foe: Kirk Langstrom aka MAN-BAT! Working with him on this caper is the mysterious Shush. After surviving the encounter, Robin believes he knows who Shush is and how it connects to his “day job” as a High School student.

This chapter begins at Gotham City High School. Raising money for school sports is nothing new. However, a special guest is heling with the pancake fundraiser. Readers see Bruce Wayne is serving hotcakes. This doesn’t go over well with Damian and his plans.

Readers see a flashback to the night before. The dynamic duo is in pursuit of Orca. They apprehend their rogue but not any concrete info. With Man-Bat more dangerous than ever, Batman makes the call to “assist” Damian’s lead on Shush.

How does this play out? Readers see a new side to Damian emerge as his life as an “ordinary” high school student leads into an unlikely place. As the investigation ramps up, the pair starts fitting more pieces of the puzzle…or so they thought. The final image will be the talk of the comic shops this week and looks to open a door no one saw coming.

Williamson constructs the family bonding through rime fighting to make this series stand out like no other. The high school antics provide a light-hearted pause from the hunt for Man-Bat. Damian’s “ploy” to go under cover hides the secret Williamson eludes with his character.

The product of the League Of Assassins appears more open to “normal” high school life than it seems. The writing also reflects the proud father moment in Bruce Wayne. Those panels peak where Bruce is trying to make small talk with his son. This distracts readers long enough set up the final page. It is a crazy surprise that looks to have a deeper tie to the overall story. It’s also another reason this book stands out from the other Bat family for its directions as well.

Čižmešija and Lokus step in for art duties for Simone Di Meo this issue and present a fresh look at Gotham High. The mannerisms of “Happy” Bruce clash with “Brooding” Damian to give readers solid drama while watching Damain’s plans unfold.

That said, The superhero life doesn’t escape this story. There’s a fun two-page spread that kicks off the Orca sequence. The final act captures the investigation tension with images reflecting Damian’s struggle of how events at school have changed. This leads directly into a full page final image that is guaranteed to have Batman fans talking and counting down until the next issue drops.

Fast times at Gotham High reign supreme for the Dynamic Duo as their latest case takes a unique twist. Williamson leads readers in a different side of Damian while balancing the father-son dynamic flawlessly. Čižmešija and Lokus craft excellent imagery to ride shotgun until the final page stops everything with an unforgettable moment.

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of a captivating Batman story from DC Comics. From the fallout of “Knight Terrors”, Bruce Wayne has not been himself. With his back-up personality kicked in, the damage done has been immeasurable. Without the Bat family, he’s on his own. Throw in his most dangerous rogue and one questions how things can be worse? “Mind Bomb” proves readers have only begun to find out.

BATMAN #141 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Tomeu Morey, and Clayton Cowles (along with Dustin Nguyen and John Kalisz) brings “Mind Bomb” to a show stopping finale. Let’s see who’s left standing from this encounter.

The Dark Knight has not been himself for quite some time. Zur-En-Arrh, the back-up personality of Bruce Wayne has emerged from the results of “Knight Terrors”. Zur-En-Arrh helps cause the divide with Bruce Wayne and the Bat Family with “the Gotham War”. Now along on his war versus crime, the caped crusader has never been more unhinged and violent.

During this time, Joker has reappeared. What starts as a murder to a toy company heir leads into a deeply personal battle, both mentally and physically. The results have now Joker violently disposed and Batman facing his own worst nightmare: Zur-En-Arrh in his own unstoppable robotic body!

The issue begins with a flashback of Zur-En-Arrh overriding Batman’s Failsafe body programming with his own personality. The transfer is all the more frightening in the present. A battered and bruised Batman now stands off against a version of himself that is his imperfect vision of the future.

Even with the offer of letting this version of Batman take over and give Bruce the freedom he would love to have, Batman knows what he must do. The action kicks in as it’s man vs. machine. The pace never slows down as the grueling battle never slows down until the crushing final blow. Readers will need to prepare for impact as the final moments will send the next phase of Batman into uncharted territory.

Zdarsky directs a Hollywood summer action blockbuster within this chapter. There are very few slow moments to allow readers to catch their breathes, but they make the most of their time. Bruce’s initial reaction to Zur-En-Arrh and its’ offer gives the following action even more weight. Knowing what is sacrificed makes the action more tragic. The closing moments bring a grounded moment of clarity to what has just transpired. it’s a fitting finale to a story that pushes Batman past his limits in his Never-ending quest for justice.

Jiménez and Morey give fans a fight not soon forgotten. Right from the front leap into danger, the art reflects the rapid pace. Each panel flows seamlessly into the next matching blow for blow. There is an excellent car chase sequence filled with self-doubt and building emotion.

The “championship rounds” are unrelenting in how the strategic chess match has become. Another half-panel image gives readers a sense of Batman’s rage going into what he feels will conclude the fight. The next pages keep raising the stakes until the few panels bring the battle to a chilling end. The epilogue sets forth an interesting scenario with uneasiness to wrap up things for now, but not for long.

Bruce Wayne comes face to face with an unsettling challenge to bring “Mind Bomb” to an explosive end. Zdarsky pens a tragic, yet exhilarating close with Jiménez, Morey and Cowles providing the beautifully brutal backdrops to an intense last stand for the cowl.

When they are tipped off on the location of David Sikela aka Boy Thunder, Batman and Superman head into the multiverse. Their destination is Earth-22. The planet is the home of GOG and the world of “Kingdom Come”. As expected, the heroes’ arrival hasn’t been warm. Their reunion with Sikela was even colder. Now fighting to survive, the world’s finest have their work cut out for them this time.

The issue kicks off with GOG and Sikela (now known as Thunderman) addressing Batman and Superman of their world. Gog is confident in the loyalty shown and vows that the invaders will be brought to him swiftly.

Meanwhile, The World’s Finest are facing off against the Heroes of Earth-22. The odds are overwhelming but Batman and Superman are holding their own. Their opposition believes that Bats and Supes are here to kill all the heroes. The oe feeding the heroes that idea: Thunderman. Sikela makes his appearence in the fight and proves his value by causing the World’s finest to be captured.

While taken away, the pair runs into a familiar face in Gog’s prison. Some would say an old friend. Others would say a “New God”. Readers see what this inmate reveals concerning Gog and his plans for Earth-22. The information reveals a darker plan than anyone realized. Once the final page lands, the course the story is heading looks to get darker before finding its dawn.

Waid leads readers on a deeper walk into the storied world of “Kingdom Come”. GOG appears as terrifying and cold as ever with his presence in the story. This provides a great balance to the heroic actions of the World’s Finest. Seeing the pair work together as the odds overwhelm shows the long game the legends play while uncovering the truth of events.

Readers will see the standout moments of the issue kick in once the prison conversation begins. Waid splits the story between the past and present without losing any details in the mix. All points come togther with a strong final portion of the chapter. The closing leaves a chilling air with readers as the truth is revealed with little hope to stop it.

Mora and Bonvillain craft some amazing action sequences that are sure to please readers. Seeing some of the greats from the DCI square off with the original pair will deliver on classic superhero storytelling. The mannerisms displayed convey the high stake involved with this mission.

Readers are gifted a fantastic two-page spread from inside Gog’s prison that brings up some very familiar faces. This leads readers into exceptional visuals panels that bring all points together with two noteworthy final pages. One is an all-out action full page shot. The other is a more simplistic page which hits equally hard with the reactions displayed. Both will have fans buzzing. It’s one of Mora’s strengths as a artist which this series benefits from.

JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. GODZILLA VS. KONG #3 (DC COMICS/Legendary comics)

For this entry, we’re diving back into one of the biggest pop culture crossovers in history. Combining two of Hollywood’s historic monsters is big enough, but adding in DC Comics’ legendary franchise takes it to a whole other level. Within a few issues, the series has delivered on big action and shows no signs of slowing down!

JUSTICE LEAGUE VS. GODZILLA VS. KONG #3 by Brian Buccellato, Christian Duce, Luis Guerrero and Comicraft picks up after last issue’s shocking ending. Let’s see where things stand now after the dust has settled!

When Godzilla invades Metropolis, this moves draws the attention of the Man of Steel himself, Superman. Little did he or the rest of the DCU know that the King of All Monsters would become the catalyst for an invasion of the Monsterverse into the DC Universe. It also doesn’t help matters that looming in the wings are the Legion of Doom. However, they have shifted their attention to one of its’ members who’s gone rogue.

The first round has gone the way of the monsters in the initial encounter. Superman appears to have fallen in battle with Godzilla. With the rest of the DC Heroes trying to stop other monsters form destroying cities, is there anyone who can stop Godzilla now?

This issue starts in Central City. The Fastest Man Alive, The Flash (Barry Allen) is running into danger. The destination is Iron Heights Prison. What’s waiting for him is MUTO, a classic cthulhu-hybrid monster. Flash heads into the prison to stop a riot from the inmates. As a fog looms overhead, Flash slows down. This allows the meta-prisoners to get the upper hand on the hero.

Luckily, back-up arrives quickly as Supergirl and Green Lantern crash the party. With the mist dealt with, the focus shifts back to stopping MUTO. Plans are derailed for Supergirl as she notices she can’t hear Superman’s heart beat. Knowing something is wrong, she races back to Metropolis.

Readers bare witness to a bloodied and defeated Superman in the street. With other heroes trying to slow down the monster, one takes blame for the fallen Man of Tomorrow. SHAZAM powers up to take down Godzilla once and for all.

How does The World’s Mightiest Mortal contend? The answer doesn’t wait long to appear. The action moves fast as events spiral out of the heroes control. Can they find a way to get their “home field advantage” back? If the final moments are any indication, things might be going from bad to even worse!

Buccellato spares no expense on delivering a non-stop thrill ride with this latest installment. Right from the beginning, the Flash conflict spotlights another DC Hero struggling to believe what they’re dealing with. Buccellato doesn’t spend too much time dwelling on the wonder and kicks right into the heart of the conflict and ultimate resolution.

The shift to Metroplois makes perfect sense as DC’s most powerful hero is defeated. The sense of panic fills those panels until ultimately Shazam enters the fray. Juggling so many characters, Buccellato never forces or cuts short time in the chapter. Each major player gets their moment to tell their part. Pacing helps build up the closing act as a dangerous entity looks to have become even more dealy. There’s such a big “Hollywood” feel to this story that continues to impress.

The art gives each monster a dramatic entrance while building up their moments on page. Duce and Guerrero mix in near full page panels to emphasize this aspect. The moments with Godzilla really capture readers’ attention. From a near full page action shot to a fantastic two page spread, the fight rages on to an easy fan approval. The emotions run high as well concerning the fate of Superman.

Duce and Guerrero balance out the surge of fear and denial concerning the fallen ally with the frantic setting of the story. The latter half of the issue shines as a major player appears to be ready to impact the main plot. The issue is capped off with a strong final image tipping its hand at how bad things are going to become. Another great visual read!

The mayhem continues as the omnsters run wild in the DCU. Buccellato weaves in big action with emotions running high as hope takes a huge hit. Now, things escalate to a fever pitch as the case looks like it’s about to break wide open!

With most of the Bat Family exiled away after the events of “The Gotham War,” Bruce Wayne has taken his fight against crime to a new location. No longer at Wayne Manor, Batman has set up shop inside a brownstone. With his back-up personality still lingering after the effects of “Knight Terrors”, the Dark Knight continues his quest for Justice. Along for the ride is his teenaged son, Damien. Their relationship has been strained over the past few months. Their latest case might be the catalyst to heal their wounds.

While investigating an attempted kidnapping on Dr. Kafira, Batman was attacked by Bats! The alleged culprit behind the attack was Shush. Readers quickly foud out that she wasn’t the main boss. That honor belongs to an old friend: Kirk Langstrom aka MAN-BAT!

This issue begins with a flashback to Damian’s training with the League of Assassins. His trainer, Mistress Harsh, pushed his skill to the limit with an unorthodox test. When she deems he failed, Harsh hits Damian. Unknown to her, Talia Al Ghoul walks in and doesn’t appear to be happy. The outcome is one readers will have an inkling of happing but to what extend?

As the story jumps to the present, Man-Bat is addressing a defiant and restrained Robin. With Shush in the room , Damian holds his own with the banter with the bad guys. It’s enough to almost give Batman an easy route for the heroics. Man-Bat senses him and says to join the party. Batman obliges and onward goes the excitement.

How does the encounter go with Man-Bat? From this stage, the drama picks up as the duo now knows who their opposition truly is. The fallout delivers on giving some key notes as to how the father and son deal with the knowledge. This all rises right into the few ending pages. Once readers get to the end, there’s one bit of news that should generate some buzz heading into the next chapter. It’s another great piece of the winning formula of this series.

Williamson gives readers a strong payoff to the latest caper without doing a full reveal. The metamorphosis of Langston works to further the drama along. It also adds a new layer to the storied history of the enemies. Speaking of storied history, the strength of this series has been the bond between Father and Son.

Williamson’s writing spotlights Bruce and Damien's road back from estrangement. The flashback sequences show Damien’s past in a darker place in comparison to where he is now. The stark difference is seen in a few moments where the pair happily bond in their pursuit of the case. The ending moments solidify their bond while leaving readers with a great closing footnote until next issue.

The art duties are spilt this issue between Di Meo and Janin. With Damian’s initial flashback sequence, Janin sets up Damian’s brashness with solid action behind it. Batman gets his fair share with a near full page panel that shifts gears in the story direction. Janin also delivers an epic two page image of the Dynamic Duo in happier times that is sure to please fans.

Di Meo comes crashing in with his own two-page full splash page bringing Batman crashing into the story. The imagery is fast placed. This gives this Bat book a certain feel to it that drives the building drama with each page. This issue has a great 1-2 punch with the art leading into a great closing panel to cap events off with. It’s always a highlight reading this series.

The latest case for Bruce and Damian Wayne closes in one aspect but opens a surprise one with this latest issue. Williamson’s strong writing balances the family and crime-fighting while the dual art threat of Di Meo and Janin gives readers a wonderful trip through the vivid imagery. Make sure you have this series on your pull lists at the local comic shop!

OUTSIDERS #2 by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Robert Carey, Valentina Taddeo and Tom Napolitano (DC COMICS) brings forth a new expedition into the hidden world of DC Comics. Let’s follow along as the trio takes another plunge into mystery!

The story begins with the trio conversing in their offices in London, England. Kate Kane takes the lead and starts describing an experience she had while at West Point. Kane breaks down an expedition to the Enlil triangle, investigating a unique storm. While out at sea, a creature emerged and took out the fleet researching the area for rescue.

Kane tries selling the point of investigating the creature and the storm. Knowing the area has been a mystery for 25 years, Kane feels this is Outsiders business 101. However, the rest of the team shown some hesitance. After some deliberation, the group heads into the Enlil Island Chain to unlock the secret of the storm.

Once they arrive, they come across something that readers won’t see coming. Blocking their path of discovery is a long-standing DC Comics team that knows a thing or two about “Challenging Unknown” obstacles. The Outsiders cross paths with the new CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN!

What happens when the two units are in search of the same answers? Readers find out fast that the Challengers are not the same group they remember. The new dynamic plays into an unforeseen hurdle on the search for the truth. The drama heightens as the search goes further into the sea. The resolution leaves much to ponder as the ending presents a new thought. The final moment closes out the story on a solid note, while giving some inklings of where this team is heading as their story has just begun.

The HiveMind further play into the mysteries of the DCU by re-envisioning one of DC’s classic teams. The writing walks readers through their history just enough to sense their impact on the story. The breakout character thus far has to be Kate Kane. Seeing the tension building with conversation with Fox challenge how this tea can co-exist.

Meanwhile, the mission at hand showed various layers before drawing its’ conclusion. The personalities clash just enough to give readers a different sense of teamwork. This point is highlighted in the closing act. It gives its’ payoff to the brooding internal conflict and continues to move the latest chapter forward. The closing moments leave readers on an optimistic note as the writing reflects the new team is still finding their footing. All the while, the writing juggles many points on the road to leave the readers well invested at this ambitious story.

Carey and Taddeo leaves readers with many different looks on this team’s latest quest. There is an excellent two page spread welcoming the creature from Kate’s past into the current story. The conversation panels show Kane’s frustration in getting the team invested in her. This does taper off once the rival characters make thier appearance.

The Challengers make a grand entrance with a stand-out fill page panel. Their introduction panels are presented in an easy-to-follow style which makes an easy transition once the drama begins to ramp up. The closing image will give readers pause to what’s next. It’s a great full page parting shot mirroring the prime driver of a solid driven story.

The latest challenge for DC’s newest super-team displays an emotional driven tale. The HiveMind balance the drama and excitement with fantastic writing. Carey, Taddeo and Napolitano construct huge moments with driven reactions to continue making this a book not to be missed on New Comic Book Day.

TITANS: BEAST WORLD #2 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest chapter in DC Comics’ huge crossover event: BEAST WORLD. With the Tians stepping into the role of the premier superhero team, they have been tested like never before. What happens when one of their own becomes the problem behind a global catastrophe? Nightwing and company are finding out first hand.

TITANS: BEAST WORLD #2 by Tom Taylor, Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, Brad Anderson, and Wes Abbott continues the chaos as the heroes scramble to stop it. Let’s take a closer look and see how things are going now.

When the Necrostar is released from its’ planet prison via Brother Eternity, the Titans lead the charge to stop the oncoming threat. Beast Boy takes a huge gamble and makes himself into the one being that might be capable of stopping the threat. He turns himself into a Starro.

After the space altercation, an unforeseen presence makes their move. Amanda Waller has sent Doctor Hate to intervene. Beast Boy is now infected and attacking the earth with spore-like creature. The people of Earth are transforming into beast of their own.

The story picks up with Cyborg and Raven floating in space. Both are reeling from the initial encounter of the Necrostar. As they start gathering their surroundings, they see a number of the DC Universe’s most powerful heroes trying to stop Beast Boy’s attack.

Meanwhile back on Earth, ANIMAL MAN is being overwhelmed by the surge of animal-humans taking over. In Bludhaven, Nightwing and Batman are doing all they can to help the innocent survive the ordeal. When a young boy becomes trapped in a car, Batman flies in for the save. During the rescue, Batman is wounded via a bite that nearly rips his arm off.

Nightwing swoops in for help but the next moments switch everything on its’ axis. What transpires pushes Dick Grayson to his limits. In the process, he (along with readers) find more clues about the spread of the animal infection. Will it be enough to turn the tide or will another force factor in to delay their cause? If the final image is any indication, the battle has only just begun for the heroes of the DC Universe.

Taylor keep things centered around the face of the Titans for this chapter. The struggle Nightwing shows to the conflict shows many sides. Not only is the world around him becoming unglued, but he is forced to confront a threat he never wants to face. The moments before that fight occurs, Taylor shows Grayson’s fears pouring out as he knows what is coming. The emotional gut-punches with Batman and Nightwing play into how readers can sense the conflict is weighing on them.

The other main characters of the story gets their times to shine. None Moreso than the main culprit behind the escalation of events. With a power struggle looming behind the scenes of a global crisis, Taylor paces each level out to keep a fair balance of drama and action.

Reis, Miki, Anderson and Abbott bring stunning visuals to this issue. The full page image of the DCU heroes fighting Gar-Starro makes an immediate statement. The more low-key moments center around Batman and Nightwing. The reaction Batman gives the young boy after a question is asked shows a different side to the Dark Knight.

This leads into some fantastic action, building towards a monstrous full page image that amplifies events. Mixed with other heroes emotions, the closing panels cap off the feeling that the tide might start turning or be lost forever. There is much to enjoy with the art displayed here.

BATMAN #140 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we are descending further into the fractured mind of DC Comics’ Dark Knight. Since his awakening from the events of “Knight Terrors”, Bruce Wayne hasn’t been himself. With his defense personality in control, BATMAN has become more dangerous. Now poised to face his greatest foe, can Bruce not only defeat the Clown Prince of Crime, but his own mind as well?

BATMAN #140 by Chip Zdarsky, Jorge Jiménez, Mike Hawthorne, Tomeu Morey, Ivan Plascencia and Clayton Cowles breaks the Bat even further with the next chapter of “Mind Bomb”. Let’s take a closer look at see how things are shaping up.

Zur-En-Arrh, the back-up personality of Bruce Wayne has taken over after the events of “Knight Terrors”. After causing damage with the rest of the Bat-Family, this version of Batman is flying solo. While investigating a murder of a toy company heir, Batman knows who the clues are pointing to: JOKER!

The investigation leads to a trap. Joker has attacked Batman on another personal level. Lucie Chesson, who trained Bruce on his way to becoming the Bat, is a pawn in Joker’s twisted game. However this time around, he’s not dealing with the same ol’ Bat. He’s dealing with Zur-En-Arrh, who sends Bruce back into his own mind. Once in his own mental prison, Batman is confronted by an army of Zur-En-Arrhs.

This issue kicks off with Joker elated to deal with Zur-En-Arrh. Their game of cat and Mouse is about to start. Meanwhile Batman is addressing the other personalities. They claim to be the multi-verse versions. At this stage, readers quickly see any chance for these conflicts ending peaceful being non-existant.

Both fights begin with no remorse shown in either. “Zur-Bat” is unrelenting on the violence he is dishing out on Joker. It is one of the most brutal displays that Batman has ever unleashed on any criminal. The same can be said for the battle inside Bruce’s mind. Overwhelmed by the odds, it appears Bruce Wayne is on borrowed time as a new Batman has outsmarted the world’ greatest detective.

Readers see how both fights pay out with two sides of the Bat fighting for control. With all the surrounding elements at play, there is no easy road to victory. The action intensifies with each panel. This all builds to a breaking point. Once that resolution starts unraveling, the closing moments prove that “Mind Bomb” is an appropriate title for this story. Expect to be blown away by the final image!

Zdarsky challenges the Caped Crusader on two fronts for this issue. The first is dealing with his own creations. The personalities of Zur-En-Arrh provides a distinct threat of what Batman can become. Seeing Bruce face them head on shows his own struggle to not lose control. Readers see what happens when he does as the battle with the Joker is brutal and unapologetic.

The writing reflects the blind obsession to serve justice. As Zur-En-Arrh deomstrates, there is a fine line from heroics and villainy. The pacing moves quickly to give both plot points ample time to hit with readers. Once the latter half of the book starts to take hold, Zdarsky throws in some amazing curves before ending on another solid cliffhanger. The uncertainty of where things are heading makes this a great Joker story. It’s also a huge win for the fans who see Batman’s greatest challenge being himself.

Jiménez and Morey bring the ferociousness of the violence out in each brutal panel of fighting. The opening salvo versus the Joker holds nothing back as Batman starts throwing punches. With each strike, readers can feel the remorseless anger behind the fists. These images only amplify louder as their fight escalates. It leads to a show-stopping moment which will leave reader speechless.

As for the mind battle, the many “cameos” are a great nod to the many versions of Batman. The “leader” of the personalities was a perfect choice. It led to more importance on when their final fight occurred. There was never a shortage on the intensity as each panel brought out the high stakes involved with the conflict. The mind resolution stands out for a subtle yet stand-out moment. This leads into the final moments which will leave readers with jaws dropped at the final full-page panel. Jiménez illustrated one hell of an issue within these pages.

The explosive mid-way point of “Mind Bomb” will absolutely blow readers away. Zdarsky exemplifies the power of the mind through his excellent writing. Jiménez and Morey leave nothing on the table as their superb imagery brings the violent rage of a vigilante up close and personal before throwing another dynamic in the mix on the parting image. This story is an absolute must-read.

BIRDS OF PREY #4 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, the simple rescue mission to Themyscira for one of DC Comics’ most famous teams hits a major road block via the Amazing Amazon. The combustible line-up has barely been holding it together. Now saving the world might have to be the second priority as it appears leaving the island could be nothing more than a dream.

BIRDS OF PREY #4 by Kelly Thompson, Leonardo Romero, Jordie Bellaire and Clayton Cowles sets up a collision course between Black Canary’s team and WONDER WOMAN! Let’s not delay any longer and jump right into the action, shall we!

When Sin (Black Canary’s “sister”) is taken by the Amazons to the Island of Themyscira, this isn’t going to sit well with Dinah Lance! Black Canary brings back the Birds of Prey with Zealot, Big Bartha, Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) and Harley Quinn. Their mission: rescue Sin and leave undetected. Sounds easy enough, right? Wrong.

While trying to leave, Wonder Woman gets wind of the disturbance on the Island. Even with Green Arrow trying to buy time, it’s not enough. The Birds are ready to fly but now stand face to face with one of DC’s most powerful beings: Dinah Prince aka Wonder Woman!

This issue kicks off with the few moments before Wonder Woman arrives. As the team plans, Zealot interrupts them and says she has arrived. Zealot tries buying time but after a short skirmish, Dinah leaves her to the Amazons to continuing to pursuit.

The issue takes off from here as its’ a HUGE fight between the Birds and Wonder Woman. Who is left standing when the smoke clears? Readers see how things play out as the fate of the world hangs in the balance. As events move forward, Dinah and her team will be challenged like never before. Will they handle it or break under pressure? If the final page is any indication, don’t expect the Birds to go quietly into that gentle night!

Thompson delivers a knockout combo on the writing for this issue. As previously stated, Zealot is quickly becoming the break-out character of this series. The interaction between her and Wonder Woman is a solid point of this story.

Another element of this story is the banter between Harley and the team. Seeing how her conversations are reflecting on Dinah Lance is a great break in all the action. Pacing does a great presentation to where all the action is without missing the drama. The final act sets up for a huge showdown while raising the tension and importance of their mission tenfold.

Romero and Bellaire don’t pause before igniting the action powder keg within these pages. There is an excellent two page full spread of the Birds fighting the Amazons. This shows why this team was put together by Dinah in issue #1. The fighting panels with Wonder Woman pop right off the pages. Cowles’ lettering adds the final touches on making this images feel THAT much bigger to the overall story.

In between the action, the art team captures and highlights the banter between the team. Seeing Dinah start to come around to Harley is a great piece to the overall picture. The lead-in to the big showdown adds a great layer to the story. The closing act instantly connects with readers the danger that is now involved on the mission. This caps off with a strong final page, and great final panel to send readers onward.

If you’re looking for non-stop action, this issue is going to be YOUR book! Thompson architects the big action with great writing. Romero, Bellaire and Cowles present stunning visual after stunning visual to showcase the magnitude of the battles. This series continues to impress and you won’t want to miss this on New Comic Book Day.

BATMAN / SANTA CLAUS: SILENT KNIGHT #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, DC Comics is giving readers one hell of a holiday treat. Gotham City can very very unfriendly to outsiders. However, one person pays no mind as he travels there on his route around the globe every December 25th. What event could possibly bring Kris Kringle to the scariest city in the DC Universe?

BATMAN/SANTA KLAUS: SILENT KNIGHT #1 by Jeff Parker, Michele Bandini, Alex Sinclair, and Pat Brosseau kicks off an unforgettable story perfect for the holiday season. Let’s take a closer look and see how this team-up fares.

The story begins with a group of Carolers singing in downtown Gotham. Flying overhead is a mysterious group of creatures that appear to have bat wings. As the group presses onward to sing in the cold, their performance is cut short. The creatures attack the singing group and leave no survivors.

Arriving on the scene to investigate is the Dynamic Duo of Batman and Robin. During their exam, Batman notices a neck puncture that appears to have drained their blood. Knowing this seems out of the ordinary, Batman calls in some help. Walking thru a portal is the Mistress of Magic herself: Zatanna!

After using a spell, she deciphers that creatures known as the Draug are at fault. Zatanna mentions that the Draug are of Norse Vampire decent. As she is breaking down her findings, one such creature attacks! While it’s in the air, the creature is impaled by a wooden stake. The person behind the weapon? None other than SANTA CLAUS!

Readers quickly find out that this is not the same jolly ol’ Saint Nick that they usually think of. What is his connection to the case? More importantly, what is his connection to Batman?!

As the story progresses, the unlikely team-up dives further into what is behind the Draug being unleashed. Readers get an early holiday gift with fast-paced action and memorable conversations between Santa and some of Gotham’s finest. This all leads into a final page where it appears someone has Santa on their naughty list and plans on delivering pain and suffering as a gift next issue!

Readers get an early gift via the most unlikely of team-ups. The issue moves briskly to hit its’ major points. Parker mixes in well timed one-liners with a more serious narrative. A good majority of this comes from Damien Wayne’s dialogue. Seeing Batman a bit more at ease and less brooding was a nice change as well. The story still had a dramatic feel to it, but one that also embraced the fun aspect and ran with it. This will be a version of Santa Klaus that won’t soon be forgotten.

Each time Santa makes an entrance, Parker sets it up to connect with the audience as a major plot point. Heading into the closing moments, Parker unveils much the background story that flows easily into the present. It caps off with a strong final image that is sure to have fans excited to see where things head next.

Bandini, Sinclair and Brosseau don’t delay about setting the tone for this debut issue. The two-page spread of the Draug’s first strike establishes the dangers lying ahead. This is followed up by full (or near full) page debuts for all the major DCU heroes at play.

Doing introductions like this to readers gives more weight to the impactful appearances. The issue is filled with great action images. This plays off the fun dialogue extremely well. The art team builds up the closing images with a dramatic flair to cap off a fun ride that is a fantastic present for readers.

For this entry, we’re checking out the start of a major event happening in DC Comics. Since the “Dawn Of DC” has been in full effect, the premier super hero team hasn’t been the Justice League. It’s been the Titans.

Emerging from the “Teen” moniker, the heroes have finally stepped into the spotlight. With a brand new series started in 2023, Nightwing and company have been making some noise at the comic shops. Now poised to be the center of a DCU event, fans are excited to see how things fare.

The story begins with a figure known as Brother Eternity addressing a mass audience watching world wide. His message is that of despair and dire extremes. “The World Is Ending” in his opinion. Readers see the conversation switches to one of hope as members of the Church Of Eternity have ventured into space. The claim is a discovery of refuge on Titan, the moon of Saturn.

Once landed, the crew (known as “Forevernauts”) discover a temple. Under Brother Eternity’s orders, they proceed with mics open. Eternity speaks in a lost language: ancient Tamaranean! The language is very familiar to one noted on-looker: Starfire!

Readers quickly see that the Forvernauts voyage was doomed from the start. With Eternity watching and smiling, an evil has been unleashed. Knowing danger at hand, the Titans make their way to Titan. Once they arrive, they see first hand what has been unleashed.

After making a daring escape from the failed rescue mission, Starfire debriefs the DCU heroes on what she witnessed: The Necrostar! Will the united front of the DCU’s most powerful be able to stop the creature?

With every crucial minute passing, the heroes brace for battle. Readers see one hero rise to the occasion as the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance. However, what happens next, no one will see coming. By the time the final page is viewed, a swift change in direction takes this story into a completely new direction. Brace yourself for impact as the next DCU event has arrived.

Taylor constructs an exhilarating start to the latest DC event. Right from the beginning, the pace moves things along fast enough to impact readers with how dangerous the threat truly is. Tying the Necrostar to a classic DC character throws a different look to the conflict at hand. Once the story moves to the middle act, Taylor takes a risk and it pays off in spades.

Putting the most unlikely Titan as the focal character opens up many avenues to take the story in. The interactions with Batman alone provide great moments. Readers don’t wait long to see how this unfolds. The creative use of powers is an element that a lasting impression. Once things roll into the final act, Taylor brings out multiple surprises that will keep readers guessing. This is great modern storytelling and fans will have much to enjoy with the writing.

Reis, Miki and Anderson paint the visions of a true event with the artwork. The Forevernauts’ arrival on Titan feels epic and the tensions readers will sense instantly. This is capped off with a strong two-page spread showcasing the evil unleashed.

The following image of Starfire addressing the DCU heroes makes a big statement as to where the Titans stand with the fellow heroes. The action visuals elevate the scenes up a few levels as they reflect the “event” feel needed. The emotional impact of the story is another key factor here, especially with Abbott’s lettering. The art team delivers a personal moment between two Titans than amplifies later in the story. With multiple full page panels mixed in, the issue has much that will capture fans attention, right to the shocking final visual.

For this entry, we are returning to the world of “Kingdom Come” via the pages of arguably DC Comics finest duo. With handling a return to one of Comics’ most impactful stories, the creative team have recreated the feel and themes of the original book for a new audience. It’s no wonder why this book receives all the accolades it does.

When the Flash does his routine multiverse checks, he discovers something that isn’t right. It connects to the World’s Finest: Batman and Superman. In earlier times, David Sikela aka Boy Thunder was a sidekick to Superman. While working with the pair, Sikela became lost in the timestream. Readers found out that where David is now is a place no one wants to go. It is the homeworld of “Kingdom Come”.

The pair travels to that world in hopes of rescuing David. Unfortunately for them, things don’t go as planned. David is not the same person that they previously encounter. He has a bit of an axe to grind with no issues of unleashing his power onto the pair.

This issue begins with David attacking Superman. Readers see how David’s anger is fueling this attack. The battle doesn’t fall on deaf ears as the Superman and Batman of this Earth catch wind of the altercation.

Once they arrive, the attention shifts towards an encounter of variations. The “Kingdom Come” Superman makes a dramatic entrance into the fight between David and our Superman. Meanwhile, Batman is left to face the “Kingdom Come” Batman with an experimental suit that readers might think looks familiar.

What happens when the heroes face their jaded versions? Fans are gifted excellent action as the story moves forward. Events build towards a dramatic entrance of someone who fans have been waiting to see. With this debut, things shift against our heroes. That point is driven home by a two page final image that is sure to have fans talking till next issue.

Waid taps into the emotional side of Superman as a driving point of this issue. Seeing his reaction to David’s new stat quo gave readers a clear cut indication how fast he could be corrupted by the wrong people. This is further laid out after Superman coming to terms about what has happened.

Waid also gives readers a fun introduction to the “Other” World’s finest. Waid also constructs a solid battle sequence involving more of the supporting cast. Pacing is near perfect leading into the final act. Once here, the story drops a big exclamation point with the final two -page panel. Another big win for comic’ best.

Dan Mora on the art duties here is near perfection. From the opening page of David’s attack to the show stopping final page, the panels have a different feel to themselves. In the first moments, Mora and Bonvillain set the pace for a fast-moving tale. The Battle of Superman officially kicks off with a splash full panel that is a fan pleaser.

The battle flows easily through the panels, giving off the magnitude of the encounter. Mora also gives Batman his time as well with a dramatic introduction for Bat’s Kingdom Come variant. The near full page moment announces that a major showdown is brewing. The introduction of the big character comes off splendidly as readers make an instant connection to who they are. The issue closes with an excellent two-page spread that puts the story in key paces before closing up shop for this round.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

DC’s legendary pair crosses over into the land of “Kingdom Come” for another excellent issue. With Waid at the helm with incredible writing and Mora’s stunning visuals, This is a no brainer on how GOOD this series is. The bar is set very high and fans won’t be disappointed after concluding this chapter.

GODZILLA HAS APPEARED IN METROPOLIS!!!! Interrupting the proposal attempt of Clark Kent to Lois Lane, Godzilla is looming on the streets of Superman’s City. The Man of Steel engages while Lois and the city’s residents look on with fear and reservations.

The Justice League has had their own issues to deal with as a Lex Luthor led Legion Of Doom has their own plans in motion. However, when Toyman goes roguewith a powerful artifact, plans change quickly for all involved. Plus, King Kong has now entered the field as well?!

This current chapter opens up with Superman addressing the Godzilla matter head on. After the talk goes nowhere, the fighting begins. Godzilla swaps Superman away like a fly! Some of the Justice League is now en route to Metroplois to help. Readers see that Godzilla might not be the only monster the heroes will need to worry about.

The Monsterverse has now invaded the DC Universe via Toyman! How will the heroes fare against these new threats? What of the Legion of Doom? The action escalates as the heroes race to stop the new threats. Will they succeed? If the closing portion of the book is any indication, things look bleak with a shocking visual to send readers home with.

Buccellato presents the beginning of a heavyweight showdown for the ages. Superman versus Godzilla comes across as the major conflict all fans would want and expect. Buccellato paces the opening round with strong moments. Seeing the Man Of Steel challenged in such a manner adds another dynamic for readers to process.

The rest of the DCU Heroes are presented spotlight moments which is nothing but wins for readers. The story never lacks the “special event” feel which continues to illustrate how significant this story is. The writing is winning fans over with ease with another great issue.

Duce and Guerrero craft some unforgettable images for this latest chapter of pop culture icons. The initial “first blow” thrown between Superman and Godzilla is presented with an excellent two-page spread. It sets a high bar for the remainder of their fight. The introductions of the Monsterverse representatives also are gifted with a two page spread, instantly connecting with readers about the dangers happening.

The “Gotham Monster” imagery feels like its’ taken right from a Hollywood blockbuster. The parting shot of one character’s walk-off is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Heading towards the final moments, the art team throws in some interesting dynamics before bowing out of the second issue. It closes with an unforgettable final page spotlighting the threats unfolding on the DC Earth. An exceptional job from the opening page!

If you want action, look no further! With Buccellato orchestrating the fight card, Duce and Guerrero give readers a show-stopping initiative of excitement. Once the issue concludes, there is no doubt of how huge the stakes are and its’ outcome is one not to miss!

For this entry, we’re following along a brand new tale involving one of DC Comics’ most notable father-son duos. In the mix of the Batman/Catwoman civil war, this series debut and has been lights out each issue! With the creators involved, it’s not hard to believe. The only questions fans have now is: where are we going after that ending for issue #2. Luckily, that answer comes in form of the latest issue.

With the events of “The Gotham War”, Wayne Manor is no longer at Bruce Wayne’s disposal. Batman sets up shop in a brownstone and continues his never-ending battle against crime. The Dark Knight’s status is heavily strained from most of his closest allies. There is one exception as Damien Wayne aka Robin is with his father.

After investigating a kidnapping case involving Dr. Kafira, the pair struggle to co-exist in their new stat quo. All the while, they need to stop a new threat emerging in Gotham: Shush. As their investigation goes deeper, it now puts them in Shush’s crosshairs while they try to protect the White Rabbit, who may hold a key to breaking the case wide open.

This issue begins with a flashback to a happier time. Damien is talking to Alfred Pennyworth, the longtime butler/ally/confidant to Bruce Wayne. The discussion is over when to stop learning. Damian’s stubbornness pushes until Batman walks in the room. Bruce gives the advice about not becoming too comfortable because that’s when one slips up.

It plays into the present moment. The Rabbit finds a way to escape her fate. The heroes try figuring out what happened until Shush intervenes. Readers get thrown a curve as Shush plans an unexpected surprise which draws the attention way for an escape….or does it?

With an escape comes a bigger chase. Fans are greeted to a high-octane trek through the streets of Gotham. Where it leads is to unexpected territory. Who comes out unscathed? These questions become the match lit for the final act. Once upon arrival, the final page drops another big bombshell on what is going on. Brace yourself for impact from this issue!

Williamson hits the gas petal on giving readers a solid mix of drama and action. Right from the beginning, the introduction involving Alfred hits heavy with readers. Considering the current stat quo of the Bat Family, seeing the advice given and received gave a great start to the comic. This became the perfect “on Your Mark” sequence because from here, everything sped up to reflect the heated action.

Events unfolded rapidly enough to invest the readers into the danger. This only took a small break before hitting the closing moments. Williamson pens a Damian that falls back on his brashness that makes him a fan favorite. The conclusion of the chapter is a great closing statement on an already must-read story.

Di Meo brings some incredible action sequences to the pages in the chapter. Once the Rabbit makes her run, a great two-page spread ushers in the excitement of the chase. The mix of character moments like Shush’s “connection” hit a big mark to break the pace up. However, fans will be blown away by the hunt for Rabbit. It legitimately feels like a Hollywood blockbuster film. Just when readers have a break, the art raises the danger up to a high mark. This is all before delivering on a final image that will have readers on the edge of their seats waiting for what’s next. Incredible work.

The story begins with Kate Kane aka Batwoman walking through the dangerous streets of Vahkar. With a journal entry of Amanda Waller narrating, Kane hears a noise and fires a batarang at a target. Readers see quickly, this is no ordinary target. The man who grabs the weapon in mid-air is none other than Luke Fox aka Batwing!

Fox approaches Kane, stopping her from the current mission at hand. Bringing up why she is miles away from Gotham, Fox gets an angry response from Kane. The conversation quickly shifts into a proposition from Fox. The deal: a new group whose sole intention is handling crisis before they happen. No jurisdiction, No reliance on others, No Batman.

After dealing with her first priorities, Kane accepts. The pair flies to Antarctica. Once they land, another member of the team greets them: The mysterious Drummer! What will this new unit discover?

Readers quickly find out there is many secrets below the ice that can have dire consequences. How does the trio fare? Readers get a fair mix of big suspense with heavy character driven points mixed in. The main theme of wonder becomes evident as there’s more to come with the most unknown corners of the DC universe set to be exposed.

There is no doubt of that once the last image is witnessed. It will leave a very notable impression on pat readers while getting new ones excited to see where things land now. Get ready for one hell of a ride as the landscape of the DC Universe is about to change forever!

Leave it to Lanzing and Kelly to hit readers with a deeper mystery at hand on top of an already impressive issue. The conversation and pairing of Kate Kane and Luke Fox steals this issue. Both coming out of the “Bat Family” tree and looking to make their own mark, the Hivemind sets up the duo for driving home the point of “this isn’t another Batman story”. There is just enough clues to see what’s happening but with how Luke speaks, there is more that he knows as things progress forward.

The addition of Drummer to the mix presents a nice wildcard to the “team.” Pacing moves very fast, building each moment up for a deeper blowout in conclusion. The resolution is a unique one but once again re-enforces Fox’s approach of this NOT being a super hero team. The closing moments plant a great easter egg before sending readers off with much to ponder. There are many directions things may lead to now, but rest assured, this will be one story not to miss.

Carey hits readers with some noteworthy reactions to Kane and Fox “negotiations”. The struggle of finding life post-Gotham is an easy message sent to the readers. The emotions pour for a bit before snapping back into Kane’s “normal” work. There’s a great full-page spread to introduce Drummer to readers that hits its’ mark. This is followed up by an impressive two-page image conveying what the trio is looking to explore.

The character moments run deep later in the story with a different way to approach the conflict. This is all capped off with a parting shot that fully sports this won’t be an easy story to classify or be patient to see where the next issue goes.

For this edition, we’re following along the return of one of DC Comics’ most legendary teams. With a brand-new lineup and an impossible mission at hand, the Birds Of Prey have their work cut out for them. The question now is: who will stop them first - the mission or each other?

BIRDS OF PREY #3 by Kelly Thompson, Leonardo Romero, Jordie Bellaire and Clayton Cowles takes readers on a collision course with an immovable object. Let’s see how the team fares as they inch closer to conflict.

Assembled by Black Canary, Zealot, Big Bartha, Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) and Harley Quinn comprise this fromation of the Birds Of Prey. Their mission: Break into the Island of Themyscira and free Sin (Black Canary’s “sister”) from the Amazons before they cause the end of the world. Simple, right?

With the personalities clashing, the team follows a plan by Harley to sneak onto the island. With the help of King Shark, things look to be improving. With the Amazons preparing for what’s next, a possessed voice claims “the vessel is not ready”. Meanwhile the team is outside the island ready to make their entrance.

Sneaking in through the stomach of a Megalodon, the team enters the island. With the team split up, readers see the action unfold. Can they pull this mission off? Things escalate rather quickly as the goal might just be in sight. However, there is one factor still looming to deal with. The latter half of this chapter sets up for a major collision course which will have readers on the edge of their seats from. No spoilers here, but the final image is going to have fans very excited for what’s next.

Thompson blends in the personality conflicts with a search and rescue tale that doesn’t miss. Anytime Harley Quinn is involved, nobody knows how things will play out. Thompson presents her as both the ultimate wild-card and team player. This makes for mixed results with her teammates but gives this story a new dynamic to deal with. However, the breakout character (thus far) has been Zealot. Thompson keeps a safe distance between her and the team with distinct placement of her actions. it is very noteworthy as the story moves onward.

The latter half of the chapter provides a great deal of action involving two not connected with the team. It re-enforces the importance of the mission and the “final boss” which the team needs to overcome to succeed. The story has been a great read thus far with no signs of slowing down.

Romero and Bellaire provide a high-paced backdrop for what’s unfolding here. The reactions to Harley’s comments make for a subtle break in the tension of the mission. Zealot’s actions also play a role here as the panels set up more of her mystery yet to be told. The action delivers on showing why this team was assembled. The latter half amplifies that even further. The art reflects the “big fight feel” between two of DC’s well known characters. This all leads to a full page visual that brings this issue to a close with a loud exclamation point!

For this entry, the smoke has cleared in Gotham City. One is left standing after the war of “The Bat Family”. Now it’s time for DC Comics’ Dark Knight to take center stage with a familiar foe waiting in the wings.

With the fallout of “Knight Terrors”, Batman’s dream of Gotham City has turned into a nightmare. Selina Kyle aka Catwoman has unveiled a new initiative into handling crime. This didn’t sit well with Batman and civil war was declared amongst Gotham’s most notable protectors. The struggle came to a fever pitch when Batman and Catowman squared off with Vandal Savage, who made a play to make Gotham his during the conflict.

During the conflict, Catwoman and Savage are presumed dead. Batman has also become isolated from the bat-family due to his actions. Now left with only his back-up personality of Zur-En-Arrh, Bruce Wayne has never been more alone or more dangerous.

This new phase opens up with a woman talking with police. She describes an encounter with someone who tried robbing her after winning at the Iceberg Lounge. A scream was documented but it wasn’t from the attack. It was from someone who saw who stopped it. The heroic figure was none other than Batman.

The story shifts to a man returning to his apartment. Bruce Wayne is in disguise and recapping the night’s events. However, readers quickly see there is a name on the board that draws the greatest attention: JOKER.

With a murder of a toy company heir, Batman begins to cypher the clues of the Clown Prince of Crime. What scheme does the Joker have in store now? All roads lead to a confrontation pushing Batman to his limits. Can he stop the Joker or will he even get the chance? The closing moments throw a big X factor into the mix which looks to complicate events even further than Batman can possibly imagine.

Zdarsky sets events in motion for a greatly complex tale. The introduction plays out like a traditional Batman story. It doesn’t take long to switch gears and see how Batman is coping with the Gotham War fallout. Zdarsky paints a picture of fractured and forward thinking. Seeing the influence of Zur-En-Arrh still lingering gives readers a sense of uneasiness when the Bat needs to be his sharpest.

Diving into the crime at hand, the writing reflects a great detective story. Things shift quickly as Batman dives further into the plot. The added layers of Joker’s attack make for the frightening scenario. It is imagery that will stand out with the haunting dialogue. Even with this at play, readers won’t see the closing moments coming, which makes for a great ending sequence of events.

Jiménez and Morey craft excellent imagery throughout this issue. From the introduction, the full page panel credits page pops right off the page. The red coloring heightens the feel as the page makes a bold statement of return for Batman. The red coloring plays a part in building the initial investigation of Joker’s latest case. It plays as a nice assist to the half page visual of the horrific first crime. Another excellent page is Batman walking into the location of the follow-up clue. It gives an ominous feel as the tension builds up.

The Joker’s personal attacks make an impact with the details involved. Readers bare witness to how things are presented and the chills from the visuals grow the story’s strength even further. The closing pages throw a great mix into where things were looking to go. The art team makes a great final image before wrapping this initial chapter up, beginning a long wait for what’s next. There’s much to enjoy here for readers.

Whenever the story involves Batman and The Joker, fan expectations are almost unreachable. That is not the case with this issue. Strong writing and exceptional art builds the foundation for what is sure to be a memorable Batman story for the ages.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of an explosive crossover from DC Comics. Anything Gothan City is the battlefield, readers know Batman will fight anyone to the end to defend it and his vision of justice. However for this fight, it’s his “Bat Family” providing the opposition. Lading the charge is his lover/enemy Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.

The battle has morphed out of a simple question of ethics into a no-holds-barred fight leaving nothing but shattered ties and a city prime to be conquered in its wake.

Due to the fallout from “Knight Terrors”, Bruce Wayne aka Batman was asleep for quite some time. When he finally wakes up, Gotham City’s crime rate has drastically been reduced. A new initiative has been started amongst the criminals of Gotham. The mastermind behind it? None other than Selina Kyle aka Catwoman!

Selina has been teaching the lower level of criminals a “Robin Hood” style of activity. The movement has lowered crimes in Gotham to astronomical records. This doesn’t sit well with Batman, as he sees all crime as universally bad. It also doesn’t help that Zur-En-Arrh, his emergency back-up personality is active due to the Knight Terrors ramifications. The cold-hearted mindset decrees that Selina’s operation must be stopped after a life is lost during a heist.

Sides have been taken amongst the Bat family. Drastic actions have been taken by Batman with no remorse. Of all the victims, no one was hurt more deeper than Jason Todd aka The Red Hood with the actions of the possessed Dark Knight. All the while during the Bat family civil war, Vandal Savage, the immortal nemesis of the DCU, has swooped in making a play to conquer Gotham. Now with the battle at the breaking point, who walks away the winner of Gotham City?

This issue begins with Scandal Savage, daughter of Vandal and formerly aligned with Catwoman, organizing Selina’s former pupils. They have been given their orders to get the meteor fragments which will give Vandal strength of unknown levels. Meanwhile, Tim Drake (Robin) is heading to investigate an explosion. When he arrives, he and readers aren’t ready for what’s next.

Led by Two-Face, a group of Batman’s rogues make their way down the street, nearly killing a few civilians. Overwhelmed, Tim is taken hostage.

All the while, Batman, Catwoman and Jason are meeting where it appears the real Bruce has come back to the fold. Readers witness a tremendous speech and plea to the family to come together to stop Vandal’s attack. The question now is: Can the broken family refrom and save Gotham?

The answer is aimed to please, but with overwhelming odds, t might not be enough. The ending gives this story fitting epic moments with one especially outshining them all. Its’ fall-out looks to set up a new stat quo but one can’t help but wonder if the bonds have been broken beyond repair?

The writing team bring a great deal of noteworthy events to the finale. Seeing the “old” Batman re-emerge to inspire the family was a solid way to shift gears towards the common enemy of the Savages. At the end of it all, Justice is what both warring sides of the Bat-family want, with Selina being the voice of reason. There are excellent moments with the various family members teaming up but none bigger than “The Cat and The Bat”.

Throughout their history, there’s few like the pairing of Bruce and Selina. Seeing them pair up in the later issues gives readers a reminder of why this conflict has been so personal. The writers carry this mood into the final battle. There’s a fair mix of action and drama that is sure to please.

The epilogue is one that might throw some off. It feels like a reset until something re-surfaces which leaves some questions heading into the future of Bruce Wayne. Overall, it has the “big fight feel” that you ant to see in a finale. How long it lasts will be the thought moving forward.

The art captures the intensity of the ending at hand. the introduction of two-Face and the rogues makes a big splash at how far Gotham has crumbled due to the war. It’s followed up by some great action panels with more of the family involved. The meeting between Bruce, Selina and Jason carries a bug emotional burden of Bruce’s actions.

This reflects later in the issue when Bruce and Selina pair up. There is subtle facial expressions indicating the extreme highs and lows reflecting the conflict and its surrounding factors. Readers will have a lasting impression of what transpired and an idea of where things lead now.

When the smoke clears, the fate of Gotham City is made evident to readers with a fitting conclusion to the Bat family civil war. With themes reminding readers about the bond of family through the writing and art, This crossover conclusion is sure to have fans talking on New Comic Book Day.
