The issue kicks off with our heroes running from a knight & his GIANT Lion. What an epic action sequence to start! Right until the daring escape, the creative team wastes no panels on delivering some high octane action. The book then shifts to the Grail Castle where an ACTUAL GIANT is on the hunt!

Our trio of heroes (Bridgette, Duncan and Rose) make their way underground to the room of the world’s most famous hunter. It’s a great surprise so not spoiling it here. We also get a quick trip between the battling Artur sides before coming to a screeching halt on the final page!

There is LOTS to enjoy with this issue. Gillien’s storytelling is strong throughout this issue. From an exciting opening sequence of events to the subtle quiet moments in the hunter’s office, this issue has a lot to build off for the readers. Even when the story takes some detours, it never feels like a pause from the overall story. There’s some many characters in this world that balancing isn’t easy. Gillen pulls this off extremely well & makes for a strong book.

The art….WOW.! Mora delivers on some amazing visuals in this book. The fantasy world pops right off the pages in this issue. Giant Lions? Check. Actual GIANTS? Check. There are so many incredible visuals in these pages that readers will have to do a few reads to see everything they might have missed (and that’s not a bad thing). It’s a perfect match for what the story needs to connect with.

The story picks up with Aaron Slaughter tracking down his old roommate Jace. The story then flashes back to Jace’s first few days at the House of Slaughter. Readers see the early moments of a budding relationship between the two along with seeing how Jace’s initiation ritual went down. It’s great insight to the inner workings of the secret organization. It’s a very intense scene & is played out very well. The final moments of the book are a show stopper for sure.

Tynion hits another shot out of the park with this one. Aaron’s story is felt on each page. Readers can empathize with the range of emotions he’s going thru seeing Jace. This isn’t an ordinary job to do & the struggle to complete it is very evident. The backstory of how Jace joined the house was very well done. It wasn’t cut and dry. There were layers to it & readers got a small glimpse of it. Plus the ending scene capped off a solid issue with style.

The art played its part well to the story. The emotion of scenes translated from panel to panel with ease. You could connect with Aaron’s struggles throughout the issue. Even Jace’s struggles and his challenges with initiation were presented strong through each visual.

The first issue was explosive & amazing in bringing back one of Valiant’s most powerful & dangerous characters to the comic shelves. There’s a very unique vibe to this comic that makes it stand out. COLLIN KELLY, JACKSON LANZING, ROBBI RODRIGUEZ, RICO RENZI & HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU deserve all the credit for this! I’ve legit been counting down the days for issue #2 to drop so let’s not waste anymore time, shall we?

Perception is reality & the world might not be anything we see it as. At least that’s the vibe of Peter Stanchek who wakes up from seeing visions. Were they real or not…TBD but he doesn’t have time to sort that out. The police are hot on his trail due to last issue’s events.

When they arrive to apprehend our hero, another Psiot, Young Ago, is leading a stand-off. Before things escalate to a fever pitch, Stanchek turns himself in. At that moment, everything goes sideways as a group of powerful individuals known as The Warning show up to “take control”. There’s a name drop moment too that I definitely got excited about.

There’s some great action between Stanchek & this group, but when the smoke clears, Peter now finds a bit of purpose & his next direction of his journey. Meanwhile, readers are left with more questions with a reveal on the final pages.

Kelly & Lanzing are crafting something very special within these pages. The pacing on the book is superb. Readers get enough of certain moments without being lost in how fast Stanchek’s world is moving. The writers are also balancing what he thinks is real to not extremely well.

Considering how powerful of a character he is, Readers are also showing how broken Stanchek is before seeing his next move. His inner struggles with no memories bring his character down to a relatable level.

Robbi Rodriguez & the rest of the art team are absolutely crushing this book. The action scenes literally pop off the pages. Readers feel the emotions Stanchek is going thru. Lost, Hurt, & barely holding it together… there is a wide-range of emotions throughout this issue. It’s an absolute perfect compliment to the wild vision seen thru the Harbinger’s eyes.

Their “unique” relationship has some fun moments that stand out. Plus how fun is a demonic card game? There’s good story-building with Pocus’ assistant Emily as well. One of the strongest points of the book is how the creative team camouflages the darker story going on with quirky funny moments throughout.

The art team continues their good work this issue. Remember the demonic card game? Balondo makes that sequence of events shine. It’s a wild force of nature in its own right. Readers will really enjoy how that sequence of events unfolds. The final pages put a nice finish & good cliffhanger to close this issue out on.

Hopeless does an excellent job in fleshing out Shanhara’s story. Hearing her side of recent events gave this story a fresh take. It also gave Whitaker’s story a bit more seriousness in how detailed his plan was & how, if it comes to pass, will be. Desmond getting the “outsider looking in” role helped with establishing how dire the situation became.

Laiso & Towe split the art duties for this issue & each had great storytelling this issue. Both Desmond & Shanhara’s tales had a unique feel to them that all built up for that final page. It definitely will have readers excited for the finale of this story.

It’s very unique perspective seeing how Aaron sees this world. Readers get glimpses of his self doubt after failing an exercise & reacting to meeting his roommate Jace for he first time. Their dynamic was a big strength to this issue. The flashback sequences were very helpful to get a sense of what this pace is all about.

This issue starts & jumps back to present time. Aaron is on a mission and reflecting. His insight on “The Hunt Log” is a great part of the book. The ending leaves readers with a few more questions than they bargained for. I would expect no less from a first issue.

Tynion paces Issue #1 very steady. The present day story hits on all fronts. Aaron having his moments from helping the deer to meeting the young boy was a great balance to the flashbacks. Tynion gave Aaron’s “Year One” story enough of an introduction to new readers that it didn’t take away from the main plot points. Solid work as you would expect from any book Tynion is creating on.

Shenan’s art was equally as good in this book. Darker tones during present time while the flashbacks had brighter pages was a subtle & nice touch. The details to the inner rooms of “House” was well crafted. Attention to makign this place feel lie “normal” but yet something more is no easy feat, bu it’s pulled off here. There was much to like about the work within these pages.

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

The current story has been centered around Shanhara’s breakdown by mysterious reasons. Aric has been trying to adjust to working without his partner at 100%. Last issue, things seemed to have finally improved but it ended with an international issue happening in Paris after an encounter with a nanite being. The tension has been building & the emotions are showing on Aric each moment. The only one seeming unfazed by everything is Aric’s “ally” Troy Whittaker.

This issue jumps right in after the Paris incident. Aric is trying to put things together of what happened but Shanhara is quick to change the subject. Meanwhile Troy Whittaker is taking blame for what happened in a PR move until another incident of nanites causes a change in plans. Readers also bear witness to Shanhara battling her issues to the point that they start piecing together what’s really been going on.. Aric doesn’t have time to take a breath because he’s jumping into action addressing the nanite’s threat. However, that moment is topped by an even bigger one. Aric & the readers find out who’s behind all these issues with one incredible cliffhanger!

Hopeless delivers another solid issue with X-O #7. The pacing is very good & does a great job in keeping readers guessing at what’s going on. The only “tip-off” are Shanhara’s word balloons which doesn’t give too much away. Once the end surprise is revealed, readers will really connect the dots to what he’s been setting up. Genuinely didn’t see that coming but super excited for next issue!

The art continues to be a strong asset to the book. Laiso’s work brings the big action moments to life. Aric’s & Shanhara’s struggles are presented very well throughout this issue. Nothing is spoiled too early & the action has that “big fight feel” to it. Laiso does a great job building toward the big ending moment. No spoilers for that, but excellent delivery at the finish.

Kingmaker, the head of Daylight, is making his moves & drawing attention from all over. Ninjak is on pursuit to put an end to him once & for all. After recent events, Ninjak knows the stakes are very high to stop Kingmaker. After some globetrotting, Kingmaker is tracked down in Hawaii holding a summit. If there was any question of what this organization is capable of, readers get a blunt reminder of what Daylight can do being so many steps ahead of anyone in their way.

What should be a “simple” mission for the most dangerous human weapon on the planet goes sideways very fast due to an unpredicted move. With his only chance ripped from him, King makes an escape off the island. From there, Kingmaker makes a very dangerous countermove that sets our protagonist on a journey to stay alive with the odds no where near his favor.

WOW….what an ending to this first arc! Parker really delivered on testing our hero with complex challenges during this story. Daylight has been a destructive force since it debuted in Issue #1 & never slowed down. Parker kept a great balanced pace where readers could feel the tension building until Ninjak was derailed from his mission. Once we get to the final page, Parker drops a big exclamation point on this issue with Kingmaker’s final words. Amazing story that locked readers in from Page 1!

The art duties were split between JAVIER PULIDO & BENI LOBEL (who closed the latter half of this book). Pulido’s style really gave this book a unique retro feel perfect for a spy book. His panel set-ups were visually eye-catching throughout the series. His art is perfect for the world of a super spy.

Lobel taking over for the latter half of this book changed the tone but nothing to take away from the story being told. His work is a bit more cleaner & defined. Nothing illustrates this more that his 2 page spread when Ninjak & Myna get to Hawaii. Excellent attention to detail. I wouldn’t mind seeing Lobel getting a longer run drawing Ninjak in the future.

Overall, Ninjak #4 closes this first arc with a style & grace worthy of the world’s most dangerous spy. Parker & Pulido really put Colin King thru a gauntlet of dangers that even he struggled with. Even you are a fan of the James Bond world, Ninjak is a perfect fit for you & even raises the bar even higher for what to expect out of a spy book in a superhero universe. Readers will next see Ninjak in 2022.

After last issue’s Drakkon reveal, our heroes come face to face with more than they bargained for. The Empyreals add another weapon to their arsenal & leave the planet the rangers are on for dead. Left stranded after parting words with Drakkon, the Omega Rangers prepare for a cold reality that their story ends on a dead planet. Readers get treated to a wide range of emotions as our heroes deal with this possibility. It’s a true test that pushes their limits. When all seems lost, the last page shows a glimmer of hope or a figment of imagination.

Parrott shows the calm before the storm with this issue. Our heroes are pushed to their mental limits with fear seeping in. It’s a different side of the Omega Rangers that readers are shown. With dealing with Drakkon turning & the Empyreals now poised to conquer, where do we go from here? There isn’t too much action but we’re going to have plenty of that with the upcoming war.

Mortarino’s art is great as usual. The Empyreals look menacing & readers get a clear picture of what their capable of. The quieter character moments strike the readers just as impactful. They can feel the despair of the dying planet & our rangers wearing their emotions. Mix in the demeanor of Drakkon during his turn & you have the ingredients for a very solid issue.

This issue kicks off continuing the fallout from the Lord Zedd origin reveal from a few issues ago. Readers are seeing a different side to Zordon. The back & forth chess moves with him & Zartus has been must-read material. Tensions are high & with the upcoming battle creeping closer, all parties involved are making moves. There’s a great sequence between Zordon & Lodd Zedd that drills that point home. By the end of the issue, the first strikes have been fired & readers are left with a great ending to the first round.

Parrott delivers another great issue building up the tension. The backstory solidifies why the battle being waged means so much. Not only is it for the fate of the universe, but it’s so personal that no one can handle taking the loss. Zordon’s past has been an entertaining ride to follow. It elevates the story to another level & is felt when the first moves are made.

The artwork is very solid as well. Renna captures the quiet moments of conversation extremely well. Bringing those final moments before battle to page isn’t an easy task with the emotional ties into the characters from Eltar. Renna’s simple facial expressions with Zordon & Zartus exemplify the heaviness of th situations here & the impact on the final page’s actions.

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

The story is based around a character known as B. B is a mix of god, mortal & 100% Violence. After being around for hundreds of years, B has made a distinct mark on the world. He now uses his talents for the U.S. Government using his “skills” in dangerous missions. His reward: learning why he is how he is & how to end his life. The first four issues really set a high-action tempo for the story & is extremely violent. There is no doubt why B is every bit of a force of nature readers would think.

This issue focuses on B’s history of “what is Love” and a behind the scenes on his beginnings. It’s literally a trip through time. It shows great insight to what’s behind the storm of rage. However, the trip through memory lane shows possible signs that B might not be fully ready for the next mission. Also, it seems that the government might have more plans than just helping B find his form of peace.

Reeves & Kindt really deep dive into B’s past in this issue. The subtle conversation with Diana (a doctor working with B) starts the unveiling of who B really is. Readers get a very straight forward tale of how an “immortal” deals with love & lost all these years. The writers deliver on the emotional moments & drive it home throughout the issue.

Garney’s artwork brings this story to life perfectly. The panel set-ups showing how aging is seen thru B’s thoughts is very well done. Readers feel the gravity of B’s emotions on this saga. The action might be more spaced out here compared to previous issues, but the scenes come through when needed in the story.

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

The story follows the actions of a magician named Pocus Hocus who makes a Faustian deal with a demon. The deal: Power of magic for his soul. There’s reasons behind this. However, as the old saying goes, you can’t always get what you want. While contemplating his next move, Pocus gets a visit that might be his chance to fix things. What kind of magic will get him out of this mess? Read on & find out!

Radford & Dunford take readers on a fun, yet quirky saga with a magician who’s dreams appear to be more of a nightmare than he bargained for. The subtle humor really gives this book a fun twist. “Pocus” doesn’t exactly scream cool for a name (“and you thought Houdini was a dumb name”) but the writers really carry that fun vibe throughout the darker tale being told in these pages.

The art really balances the story out well. Balondo (along with colorist Jasen Smith) present the story with solid artwork & great usage of colors when needed. The contrast elevates the story esp. when the demon shows up. When moments need to shine, they pull this off very good.

Overall, Pocus Hocus" #1 was a fun read. Even with the darker story being told, it’s balanced out with well placed humor. If you’re looking for something new to check out, give this book a shot. For more info on Pocus Focus, check out their Kickstarter & Facebook. As always , Thanks for reading.

ONCE & FUTURE #2O (BOOM! STUDIOS) - ODPH podcast PARLAY POINTS

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH Podcast. For this edition, we’re checking out the latest Once & Future by Kieron Gillen & Dan Mora for BOOM! Studios. This book really has a cool concept to it: A retired Monster hunter is brought back into action after a villain from King Arthur mythos has been resurrected in present time. This is very unique & I finally got a chance to check it out. Issue #20 is hitting the shelves this week. Lets see what its all about.

The story is driven by Bridgette (our retired Monster Hunter) & her team setting up shop in her family’s castle. With everything going on in their world, it appears to be a safe place but not without it’ own secrets. There are great scenes where Bridgette talking to her grandson Duncan about her past. Very solid cliffhanger ending for our team’ saga.

The other portion of the book is the battle of two “King Arthurs.” One has an undead army at his disposal. Th other Arthur has Lancelot. Great fight sequences end that saga…for now. It felt like the first round of a big fight. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

There’s a lot of win in this book. Gillen balances out both portions of the book very flawlessly. Bridgette’s return to Grail Castle is a nice change of pace from the high-octane action of Lancelot vs. the undead army. Both stories kept me intrigued about the characters. Being a new reader to the series, I never felt lost about the characters or story once diving in.

The art is incredible & pairs well with the story. Lancelot’s fights jump off the panels. The undead army LOOKS amazing & the one panel featured here had Jon Snow standoff vibes from Game of Thrones. Even the quieter moments with Bridgette spoke volumes.

X-O MANOWAR #6 (VALIANT ENTERTAINMENT): ODPH Podcast Parlay Points

Welcome back for another edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH Podcast! On this edition, we’re continuing the adventures of Aric from Dacia in X-O Manowar #6 by Valiant Entertainment. Last issue’s return set up the stage for a conflict our hero hasn’t encountered before: his alien armor Shanhara is not operating properly. How does this affect him & the rest of the Valiant Universe? Let’s find out, shall we?

After last issue’s cliffhanger , we see Aric has been sidelined trying to figure out what is the issue with Shanhara. After “having” a breakthrough, it seems as the armor has recovered. During some routine tasks, readers see that not everything is what it seems. This escalates after Aric confronts a threat he previously encountered. Shanhara is definitely not the same & is noticeably different in demeanor & actions. Once the mystery is figured out, it’s too late. There’s a very dramatic ending to this issue & a whole lot of questions raised for our hero moving forward.

Hopeless really gives Aric & Shanhara’s relationship a new spin this issue. Their bond is pushed very well. Aric is clearly lost without his armor in the beginning of this issue. Once reunited, Hopeless does a great job teasing things are not what they seem until we get to the climax point. The friction between these two carries this book. It helps sell the big ending & Aric coming to grips with things not being ok with his armor.

Laiso’s art balances out this issue with action & showing the symbiotic struggle Aric & Shanhara had. The moment when readers know Shanhara is not right hits hard & the fallout (literally) delivers an epic lose to the book. Great job all around on this book.

POWER RANGERS #11 (BOOM! STUDIOS): ODPH podcast Parlay Points

Welcome back for an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH podcast. For this blog, we’re heading back to world of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers with Power Rangers #11 by Ryan Parrott, Francesco Mortarino, Raul Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernandez & Ed Dukeshire for BOOM! Studios! I’m really enjoying what BOOM! is doing with this franchise. Its crazy to think that it’s been 28+ years of the Rangers on TV & there’s still a lot of great stories to tell. Proof was the last review I did of Mighty Morphin’ #11. It was a great re-introduction for me into the MMPR world so I couldn’t wait to see how this comic compared. Two different books & two different vibes. Let’s check this one out!

This issue kicks off with our Omega Rangers following a gut feeling by Trini to check out a deserted planet. When they investigate, they find an emissary, who they Rangers hope will guide them on a direction to defeat the Empyreals. What they get instead isn’t the exact answers they wanted. A big reveal happens that readers will be shocked to see & our heroes situation goes from bad to dire.

Plus we have a jaw dropping moment with Drakkon that is only topped by the last page. He is a very engaging character that stood out each page he was on. There was a lot of moments that stand out in this issue for readers to savor.

Parrott delivers on another great issue. I like how this didn’t have the same vibe as the other book. Stakes felt higher here. Maybe it was the shift to space or Drakkon being such a dynamic character that the story had a heightened sense of danger to it? Either way, it worked. Parrott paced the issue very well so when the big reveals hit, they really hit the readers hard. Great closing cliffhanger as well.

Mortarino delivered a high energy flow to this book. When the Rangers confront the Yellow Emissary, the action felt big & sold on why this character was so important. When the two major events happen ( Drakkon’s big change & the emissary’s revelation), the art pops off the page & does a great job elevating the story.

First & foremost, LOVE the recap pages Vailant does on page 1. I can’t preach about how important these are for books. Our protagonist & agent Myna are on their way to see Neville to get more information on Daylight. There’s a great spy twist here but after that, there’s a gut punch thrown to our leads. The dire situation is getting worse by the minute.

Form there, readers are taken on a wild ride to Norway to investigate a lab. What starts as a simple mission turns into some vivid explaining of Kingmaker & company.. By the end of the issue, Ninjak seems like he’s ready to end this threat once and for all.

Parker really delivers on strong moments in this issue. With any spy story, you need great twists and surprises. Readers will be happy to find them throughout this issue. Even with the notable death in here, the gravity of Daylight’s threat has never been made more clearer. Great pacing & more of the usual wining formula you’ve read thus far in this story.

The art is just as spy-cool as ever. Pulido’s 2 page spreads are so well done. There is nothing like this book on the market right now. The 70’s influenced spy art really shines on each spread. Prime example is the discovery sequence in Norway. Pulido makes the small details pop throughout this issue. Another win!

THE HARBINGER #1 (2021) VALIANT ENTERTAINMENT: ODPH Podcast

Welcome back for another edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH Podcast! For this review, I’m checking out one of the most anticipated books coming out from Valiant Entertainment: The Harbinger #1 by COLLIN KELLY, JACKSON LANZING & ROBBI RODRIGUEZ!

Now, if you’re not familiar with Harbinger, here’s a quick synopsis: In 1992, Harbinger was a team book that centered around a group of super powered teenagers led by Peter Shanchek, & a mysterious foundation helmed by Toyo Harada. Stancheck & Harada are onmi-level psionic powered individuals who have always provided notable moments throughout Valiant’s history. It’s very worth while to search your LCS & ceck out past Harbinger stories. Let’s get familiar with the latest saga of Peter Shanchek

***POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING***

The saga of Peter Shancek starts with him waking up with no memory of what’s happened. Shanchek is learning on the fly (literally) because he’s being hunted down. Once around crowds of people, readers get the sense that the public are not big fans of him. Readers also don’t wait too long to see a small taste of what he’s capable of when dealing with aggressive authority.

The fallout from this introduces readers to CiCi, who tries filling in the pieces of Peter’s puzzle. That becomes short lived when they’re attacked by a group calling themselves “The Warning.” More answers & questions come from that encounter but Peter doesn’t have time to process with the cliffhanger ending that gets dropped on readers.

Kelly & Lanzing deliver on an amazing refresh of the Harbinger saga. For new readers, the writers pacing doesn’t jump too far ahead where it causes confusion. They keep the story moving while letting readers get a good grasp on why Stancheck is so important. The conversation with CiCi really drives that home. The tension is built up on each page so Readers are guaranteed to be hooked from page 1.

ROBBI RODRIGUEZ absolutely crushes the pages in this issue. The art is incredible. The moments where Stanchek is using his powers are elevated to another level due to the art. This feels like an action movie. There is no stronger example of this than Stanchek’s faceoff with the helicopters. Rodriguez builds that moment up so well than when its resolved, the readers can feel the payoff. This is another perfect creative pairing by Valiant.

Overall, Welcome back Peter Stanchek. THIS is how you do a refresh on a character!

The Harbinger #1 is a perfect re-introduction of one of Valiant’s most notable characters. The writing really captures a “Matrix meets Legion” type vibe & locks the readers up from the opening page. The art is phenomenal. The panels deliver on the big moments & subtle recaps. After reading this book, you’ll have no question on why there s so much hype behind this book! Make plans for it ASAP!

Let me know on Twitter how amped you are for The Harbinger #1. As always, thanks for reading!
