Welcome back for a all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary blog to the ODPH podcast! On this edition, we’re going back to the world of King Arthur…so to speak with the latest issue of Once & Future by BOOM Studios! Issue #21 by Keiron Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain & Ed Dukeshire picks right up where our heroes, Bridgette, Rose & Duncan are face to face with an imposing threat & even more to come. The book has been a fun ride thus far, so let’s see where this issue takes us.
*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***
Our heroes are trying to evade a real life Gorgon monster who’s turning people into stone statues. On the run, they make a break to meet Rose’s parents. This moment of peace escalates quickly as a knight approaches them with an offer they really can’t refuse…literally, they can’t. In-between two threats, our heroes make an escape, but not before the knight does something really crazy to fight the gorgon.
From there, readers see Bridgette lead Duncan & Rose onto a new ques. This doesn’t go unnoticed but it’s quickly passed over with a great ending splash moment that will get you excited for next issue
This book keeps getting better with each issue. Gillen is really crafting a fun trip mixing the magic of King Arthur with present day. Even the break in the action seeing Rose’s parents doesn’t take anything away from the issue. The issue also has a great balance of action & story building. Whatever Bridgette has planned next will surely have readers excited in anticipation.
Mora’s artwork delivers yet again within these pages. The shot of the group surrounded by statues really pops off the page. Even how the Knight ‘prepares” to fight the Gorgon is intense & will catch some readers off guard. Action scenes are turned up & paint another great picture of this unique world.
Overall, Once & Future #21 is a great pick-up at your local comic shops this week. Great pacing & fun sequences continues for another go-around. If you haven’t checked this series out, make sure to give it a shot on NCBD!
