NIGHTWING #132 by Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini & Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Just when readers think they know the story, Watters throws a few curves. Olivia Pearce has crossed a line with her actions. This pushes Grayson into making a rash choice. Taking the fight to Pearce’s home turf fills pages with solid action. Her suit mimics Grayson’s every move. The one thing it cannot is his heart. In this case, that might be more costly than it seems.

Readers watch as Pearce’s unhinged origin starts to slowly unwind. The writing walks through the slow play to lure out the Boy Wonder. When plans go awry, it unlocks a true terror. Even as trained as Grayson is, the moment throws him completely off-guard. It also disguises the true play at hand. Watters takes Grayson completely out of his comfort zone. The chaotic manner sets the stage for a greater downfall commencing. There is an overwhelming sense of fear that encompasses Bludhaven’s hero to his core. A perfect exit point until next time.

Soy and Gandini open with a full shot of Nightwing-Prime fighting for life. The striking image is enough to push Nightwing over the edge. Readers are in for a treat with the full page image of Grayson running into combat. It sets the pace for the next action sequences. Moves fly fast as Pearce activates her suit. Through these panels, Grayson’s rage continues to build.

The face-off on top of the train catapults into Pearce’s reveal. Soy hides Pearce’s face behind flashback panels. This technique keeps hidden Pearce’s long play. It builds up to an absolutely terrifying full page shot. The attention to detail is incredible for this scene. Readers watch as Nightwing becomes lost in the truth that he never sees the next move. This results in a shocking public display. The only thing unchanged is Grayson’s exploding rage. It dissolves into a more somber parting panel. There’s no doubt of how fast Grayson is sinking further into despair.

FINAL GRADE: 8.7

What starts as a confrontation turns into a horrific scene Dick Grayson can’t imagine. Watters hides the brutal truth in his writing. Soy and Gandini deliver on setting the stage for a living nightmare in Bludhaven. Don’t sleep on what’s unfolding here.
