Jon Kent has returned to Smallville with a broken heart. His boyfriend broke up with him in “Secret Six”. Kent returns home to find a new path but something lies in the shadows to halt this journey.

Slott plots Jon Kent in a new landscape with excellent results. Working with Steelworks appeases his superhero side. There is one aspect that still weighs heavy on the Man of Steel. Breaking up with Jay Nakamura is still an open wound. Adams’ dialogue doesn’t let that escape reader attention. His famous parents are also aware of the “Secret Six” fallout.
Lois Lane’s conversation covers much ground. Adams nails the family caring while pushing Jon into a new direction. This leads into some classic Superman themes. The “Translated from Rooster” was a fun moment. As Jon goes through his reporting phase, it unlocks more of his character. This leads into a solid confrontation and conclusion. Sometimes powers don’t finish conflicts. All it needs is a cooler head to prevail. Readers clearly see that’s why Jon Kent is the hero he is and legend in the future. Very enjoyable read.
Meyer and Maiolo open up the art with a full page of Jon in action. The subtle Jay nods easily effect the Man of Steel. It leads into frustration on Jon’s face before finishing his tests. A two page splash welcomes Jon back to Smallville in style. This all changes once his mother checks in virtually.
Their banter shines as the subject of Jon’s heartbreak. Lois’s optimistic responses sees Jon let his guard down. This rolls into a new investigation. The full page image of Jon using his powers stands out while his grandparents object. Readers watch as this inquisitive move moves into a discovery. The reveal is grand as Jon finds out what has been the disturbance. Meyer sneaks in some action sequences before a full page ends the conflict. This moves into a more light-hearted finish. Readers can sense this right to the last panel. A great one-liner is complimented by a simple panel with huge heart. No better way to visually end this.
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
Jon Kent’s return to Smallville leads to mystery and self-reflection in a fantastic issue. The writing ties in the vintage Superman themes with new takes. Meyer, Maiolo and Sharpe construct superb imagery to guide readers through Jon’s investigation. Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow indeed.
