Taking Batman out of his comfort zone, Taylor pits him against a true test. The tone is set early as Bats assesses the virus. Terrific’s dialogue paints the dire picture. It never shakes Batman as he starts his investigation. The search takes him to Kasnia. It allows Batman to take up a role he rarely lets himself play: Bruce Wayne.
His “undercover” work leads him to the Lion’s den. The dialogue plays it cool as both leads start getting a sense of the other. Readers watch as the Blackjack game proves for an unlikely skills test. This mood carries over into another mental game of chess. The writing stages this sequence very strong. It builds up the closing action nicely. Seeing the Lion in attack mode provides some thrills before switching gears. The final page brings events full circle as time is slipping away. Another strong chapter to build from.
Janín dives right into the virus’ grasp early. The face-off with Terrific shows the doubt of what’s unfolding. It moves Batman into attacking the clues as only he can. The full page back and forth with Oracle stands out. Readers can appreciate the lead-in before Kasnia takes center stage.
There is an influence to the James Bond times with the panels here. The Blackjack panel set-up pops. It will catch readers attention as the chess game begins. The close-ups of Wayne and King play up to the tension built. Using playing card frames as side-panels is a creative take. This moves towards a more traditional setting. The coloring in these panels adds much to the art. It leads to the superhero portion of story. Readers watch as the explosions take hold. The Lion emerges via near full page image. Action is swift but ends abruptly. Events end with a subtle use of panels. Readers are left with a great conclusion with much mystery behind it. You can’t ask for much better than this.

The search for a virus cure leads the Caped Crusader into a Lion’s den of Danger. Taylor masterfully weaves in the intrigue of Batman’s latest rogue. Janín continues to amaze with stellar art. This series just doesn’t miss!
