Is anywhere safe? That is the question Jack Russell is asking. After two friends are violently murdered, Russell thinks he’s responsible. This is all due to the Blood Hunt event. In its wake, Russell and Elsa Bloodstone ran to the Savage Land to regroup. That plan wasn’t well received by Ka-Zar. Now the question is where does Russell go next to figure out his fate..
WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #5 by Jason Loo, Sergio Dávila, Aurie Jimenez, Alex Sinclair and Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics) takes the lethal lycanthrope in a direct path to an even greater danger.
Let’s take a closer look at how things play out now.
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Loo takes Russell and Bloodstone into another frantic conflict with this latest chapter. After the return form the Savage Land, there’s little time to rest. Police are now looking for Russell. Their escape leads into a confrontation that truly is incredible.
The run in with Bruce Banner is priceless. Knowing Banner’s struggles controlling a monster, there is much for the parties to converse over. Loo’s dialogue is very natural for where each are in present day. Its’ filled with awkwardness and common ground. The only downside here is it brief due to the Hood’s attack.
Readers watch as the Hulk takes hold of the situation. Knowing the power level he’s bringing, this makes sense for the brief altercation. It leads into a more shocking ending. If you know your Midnight Suns history, the close is one to please. It also drops a solid cliffhanger involving a familiar face in the world of werewolves. Another enjoyable read.
The art team keeps up a frantic pace reflecting Russell’s dash for freedom. Panels move very fast as the lead pair dodges the law. It flows into the run-in (literally) with Russell and Banner. Their body language carries a certain relatability with their issues. The diner scenes come across very smooth with the unsteady talk providing a brief calm before action.
Once at this stage, the art takes full advantage of the red band label. Readers shouldn’t expect this series to be pleasant fighting. There’s understandable violence when needed. The Hulk transformation page pops off to signal the change in direction. Events cap off with a full page image of the newest player for the Darkhold. It also throws in a subtle cameo with a much larger role to play as the series progresses.
FINAL POINT: 8.1
The latest adventure of Jack Russell provides an unlikely third wheel in his travels. Loo’s writing gives readers a mix of action and insight into two men and their monsters. Dávila and company deliver on the extreme fight for survival against the supernatural evil at hand. This series continues to bring the MCU into the supernatural chapter by chapter.
