Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH podcast!

For this entry, we are checking out a brand new series from DC Comics that features one of the most iconic rogues in the history of BATMAN. Over the years, Oswald Cobblepot has evolved from a gimmick villain to a force of nature in Gotham City’s underworld. Now with a new lease on life and past behind him, it appears fate has decided to pull him back to where it all began.

The Penguin #1 by Tom King, Rafael De Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo and Clayton Cowles gives readers an exciting tale as the next phase of Mr. Cobblepot’s life begins. Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening now, shall we?

The story starts out with the Batmobile floating in the Gotham River. Readers quickly find out it has been damaged and its’ two passengers aren’t fairing well either. Batman is severely injured, to the point he cannot escape. With being in a weakened state, Bats tries not letting his guard down to his unlikely companion: Oswald Cobblepot aka THE PENGUIN!

Cobblepot is wounded as well. Batman can’t save them. Cobblepot doesn’t want his help. There’s more on his mind at the moment.

Readers are taken back to Metropolis one year prior. A tailor is working on a suit for Cobblepot. A smart joke slips out his mouth while working on the suit. The tailor panics with fear as he knows he shouldn’t have said this. However, in a surprise move, Cobblepot brushes it off and forgives him for the snark remark!

What happened to the feared crime boss of Gotham? The journey begins to reveal itself as Oswald has appeared to have left his past goodbye for the realm of normalcy. However, as with all good things, how long can they last? An event transpires that changes the world Oswald has grown to love away from Gotham. Once the smokes clears, readers can fully expect big things forthcoming as the final image cements this story becoming an instant classic.

King sets up a complex foundation for the Penguin’s next journey. One area which King excels at is breaking down the inner thinking of his lead characters. In this scenario, Cobblepot’s life away from Crime seems to have given him some sense of peace. It is a vastly different approach to one of Batman’s most dangerous foes. The initial reaction I felt was Keyser Soze-esque. If you know, you know.

Once the scenario of events is presented for the reader, King leaves nothing to the imagination as Cobblepot’s return to the past is cemented with a final act. The build towards Cobblepot’s trouble was well-staged as the slow grind build will connect with readers that this will be something truly special to pick up at the LCS.

De Latorre and Maiolo kicks things off with an exclamation point as the Batmobile is sinking with a striking full page panel. Seeing both Batman and Penguin worse for wear lead into the story’s flashback on a high note. Their mannerisms of defeat were very noticable. Knowing their history (and How Bats was framed for Oswald’s “Death”), the art showcased their long-standing rivalry with a tensions feel. Their vision of Metropolis felt grounded and voided of anything connecting with the Man of Steel.

This played strongly into the shift in story. The panels had a distinct gritty feel heading into the final chapter. The tension grows as the art team goes for 9-panel pages before ultimately capping off this portion with a full-page climax to the big event happening with Oswald. The final few pages leaves o shadows of doubt that The Penguin is back in business and business is “good”.

Oswald Cobblepot is dead. Long live Gotham’s Crime King. King shatters dreams of a peaceful life with superb writing. The panels by De Latorre and Maiolo’s bold visuals set the tone for a forging a new trail in what is sure to be a suspenseful tale for the ages. Make sure this issue is in your possession on New Comic Book Day!

BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #18 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this edition, we’re checking out arguably THE best superhero comic on the market today. Bringing together two of the most iconic characters in all of pop culture, let alone their presences in DC comics history, can be a challenge. With Mark Waid and Dan Mora behind this book, fans have been greeted to fresh takes that reminds everyone why this pair earned the moniker of “World’s Finest”

The series has a shift in art for the next two issues but duties are in safe hands. Travis Moore steps in for Mora with Waid, Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands along for the ride as Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #18 looks to take a trip back in time to where things all began for the pair. Let’s not wait any longer and see how this new story arc begins!

The story begins in Gotham City years in the past. Commissioner Gordon leads the investigation into a heist on a showboat. The only clue they have to work with is “a riddle.” Gordon doesn’t seem to phased as he senses a certain caped crusader might be already on the job.

Meanwhile in Metropolis, The Daily Planet has taken notice of the events in Gotham. Jimmy Olsen points out the news to one Clark Kent. They break down that “the Riddler” (as called by the cops at this time) is behind the stealing. Along with the thefts, there has been some disappearances. As Clark looks at the case, there is a message left in a foreign language to humans, but not Clark. It is in KRYPTONIAN!

Superman flies to Gotham and meets up with Gordon. As they exchange information of the case, Clark references a vigilante in Gotham. Gordon mentions he has his own way to interact with the investigation, but Superman flies away catching Batman listening in.

At this stage, readers are treated to the first meeting between the World’s Finest! How does the initial interaction go? What happens when ideologies clash? What connection does the Riddle have with Superman? This issue has much to offer fans new and old as a great mystery has begun. The final panels give readers a solid parting image to hold them over until next issue.

Waid captures the essence of the total opposite mannerisms that make this pair great. The “by the books” method of Superman conflicts during each encounter with Batman’s more “direct” approach to solving crime. The little variances were a treasure to read. Superman’s time in Gordon’s office is a great example. The conversation comes off more cordial and a stark contrast between Batman’s brooding.

Readers can rest assured that the dark Knight demeanor is still there (though turned down a few notches) when he and Clark meet for the first time. The story builds itself at a steady pace with each following time, the pair starts to lay the foundation for their iconic bond. Readers will be walking away very pleased at what’s happening and waiting to see what lies ahead.

Moore’s art sets up these classic images nicely throughout the issue. The Superman/Gordon encounter kicks off with a solid visual of Gordon reacting to seeing Superman flying in his office. Its’ matched when the iconic heroes finally meet for the first times (as alter-egos and in uniform) as well. Moore’s use of half-page panels for these moments hit their marks flush. Bonvillain’s coloring is a major part on how these brief visuals leave a lasting impression. There’s great action thrown in the latter half of the book with a can’t miss full page panel leading into a reveal keeping readers on the edge f their seats until the next issue drops!

A magnificent part of DC Comics history is brought to life with an exceptional start that all comic fans won’t want to miss. Waid, Moore and the team construct the beginnings of a legendary duo with superb writing and art. The series continues to define what superhero storytelling is all about.

HARLEY QUINN: BLACK, WHITE AND REDDER #2 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a DC Comics Series that presents one of its’ superstar characters in a different space. The “Black & White” brand is a unique format where creators can tell short stories that fit outside the normal continuity with primarily black and white coloring.

Originally, this format made it’s debut in 1996 with “Batman: Black and White”. From it’s popularity, it has grown into a creator’s playground to share stories that feature the lead in a different perspective.

Harley Quinn: Black, White and Red made its debut in 2020. Fans raved about the fresh takes on one of the most popular DCU characters. With that success, a new series made it’s debut in July 2023. Coming off the heels of a strong debut, issue #2 looks to leave a lasting impression.

Due to the lengths of stories, the overview of each tale will be shorter than usual reviews.

Thompson and Wu’s story opens the issue. Zatanna has been kidnapped by Harley. She’s brought to the penthouse home shared by Quinn and Poison Ivy. After some convincing buy Ivy, Harley frees Zatanna and explains her reasoning for kidnapping. Harley wants Zatanna to use her powers to give her a new origin.

Next up is Brandt & Steins turn. At Gotham’s Pet Club annual show, The League of Super-Pets are being awarded with a prestigious honor. Representing them is Robin. However, someone disputes their claim to the award. Harley arrives with her hyenas along with…THE LEGION OF DOOMINALS! The competition is on for who is the best in show amongst DC’s super-powered animals!

Closing this issue out is Parrott and Vecchio. Jim Gordon and Harley are sitting in a diner. The place has been wrecked. Harley is in handcuffs. Gordon is letting her have some pie and a discussion is sparked that readers will not want to miss.

Each story stands on its’ own and exemplifies why this series is such a hit with fans and creators equally.

Thompson and Wu’s tale is one that plays into a factor which has followed Harley no matter where she goes. The sense of identity crisis is a major factor in Harley’s daily life. Thompson poses this theme with an entertaining backdrop. The various origin stories are brought to life with Wu’s fantastic art. There are two full page “transformation sequences that make an impact of how things begin in Harley’s quest for self-independence. The ending leaves readers with a fitting ending that is 100% all Harley. Seeing Thompson’s take here should get fans more excited for the new Birds Of Prey series coming in the fall. FINAL POINT: 9

Brandt and Stein dive into the more over-the-top side of Harley’s world with their take. The setting is centered around fun with the pets stealing the spotlight. Having the “friendly competition” go off the path is everything readers want and expect when Harley’s leading the charge. The art is excellent and pair with great moments like stolen bank accounts and a rescue gone awry. There’s a great near-full page shot of all hell breaking loose that is a crowd-pleaser. Great closing moment to cap things off. FINAL POINT: 8

The story with Parrott and Vecchio might be the show-stealer for this issue. Parrott gives readers an in-depth moment between the uneasy acquaintances. What would normally be an open and shut case turns into a odyssey into what’s the motives on why Harley and Gordon do what they do. Parrott touches upon Harley’s psychology background in a stand-out moment that brings a new look to the image of Commissioner Gordon. Vecchio’s art captures the reactions and emotions of the conversation perfectly. The panels are very grounded in their reflections but pay off huge when readers arrive at the conclusion. FINAL POINT: 10

The world of DC’s Miscreant of Mayhem is spotlighted with three incredible stories that will not escape readers after reading. Each one dives into a differing element of what makes Harley Quinn such a fascinating character. This issue needs to be added into your comic collection on New Comic Book Day without question.

KNIGHT TERRORS #3 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we are checking out the flagship title of DC Comics’ monster crossover of 2023! What happens when the DC Universe keeps living in an endless nightmare? Readers are quickly finding out in the pages of Knight Terrors and its’ companion stories. Issue #3 by Joshua Williamson, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, Casper Wijngaard, Frank Martin and Troy Peteri pushes the attack of Insomnia forward with an unlikely pair getting a much needed assist.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what’s happening now, shall we?

When a mysterious foe named Insomnia takes out longtime JLA foe Dr. Destiny in the Hall Of Justice, the trinity of the DCU (Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman) are challenged like never before. With the world put to sleep and cast into their own personal nightmares, things look very grim for both heroes and villains alike. There are only a few heroes left awake to fight back. One of which might be the key to ending the terror: DEADMAN, the body possessing spirit!

With Insomnia’s Sleepless Knights in hot pursuit for the Nightmare Stone, Deadman (who’s possessing Batman) involves an unlikely ally to help with the case. Wesley Dodds, the Golden Age Sandman has been brought from the dead to help with this battle. One is a spirit. The other is a zombie reincarnate. How does the pair survive the latest onslaught?

This issue opens up with Deadman giving a monologue to the readers in theatrical fashion. His grab looks that of Shakespearian times. In the present, “DeadBat” and Sandman are fending off some of the Sleepless Knights. As the pair looks to be overwhelmed, Robin (Damian Wayne) enters the fray, swinging his sword! Deadman speaks of his interactions with Damian while readers see the young hero fight their way out of danger. This all leads to the Batplane making the save, lifting them to safety.

While on the ship, Damian forces Deadman to relinquish his possession of Batman. The trio try to assess what’s next. This leads Deadman to try connecting with Insomnia to find more information about his endgame.

What does he find when they connect? Readers see first hand how unhinged this antagonist has become. With a flashback sequence that will send chills after reading, there appears to be a lead into where the Stone may be.

Where does the journey go from here? What are the trio willing to do to stop Insomnia? Readers see the dangers the heroes are prepared to cross to end this terror once and for all. Insomnia isn’t going down without a fight. This makes for an interesting dynamic as the closing attack raises the stakes. This all leads to an ending page that will leave some with questions heading into the next chapter.

First off, Williamson deserves all the praise for making Deadman the center of this story. The one-liners and banter with Damian (and Batman previously) have been fantastic. The pairing with Dodds works on various levels. Having another detective on the case brings a new perspective to the events unfolding.

Dodds has a whole vibe all his own (even in zombie form). This becomes evident in how things build into the final act. Williamson shows how Dodds plan has a certain confidence to it without coming across arrogantly. Pacing keeps things moving at a brisk pace but takes nothing away from the events playing out. The final page is a fitting close to what became an intriguing mix of characters and personalities.

Camuncoli, Nesi, and Wijngaard keep the horror aspects blended in with the action sequences for this chapter. The Damian Wayne full page panel introduction is a visual that will jump right off the page. It is preceded by an excellent two page spread building to that moment.

The dream/flashback sequence in Insomnia’s mind is another noteworthy portion of the story. The coloring gives these panels a somber feel as readers witness how troubled the villain has been. The third act moves at a quick pace but the team leaves no doubt that the story has much further to go. With a strong ending visual, fans will have much to ponder until the next chapter.

The latest installment of DC Comics’ horror-infused nightmare leaves fans wide awake with some impactful events to process. Williamson, Camuncoli, and the team deliver a solid companion piece to the larger story unfolding across the DCU. Keep an eye out for this on New Comic Book Day!

SUPERMAN ANNUAL 2023 #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, there is a newfound excitement happening at DC Comics with its “Dawn Of DC” movement. Arguably no character has reaped the benefits of this more than Superman. With books like Adventures Of Superman: Jon Kent and Steelworks making waves at the comic shops, fans have been praising the line featuring characters from the Man of Steel’s world.

This is especially noticeable in the brand new Superman series by Joshua Williamson and Jamal Campbell. The battle for Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow within those pages has been a fantastic read thus far.

Let’s take a closer look and see what’s happening now, shall we?

During this current run, the stat quo between Superman and his greatest enemy has changed dramatically. While Lex Luthor is incarcerated, Superman is still keeping tabs on him via super-hearing. That siad, he’s not ready for what Lex’s big move becomes! Lex has turned over Lexcorp to Superman! Now with an uneasy partnership formed and a rebranded “Supercorp” at their disposal, the pair have been thrown head first into a bigger threat from Lex’s past: Dr. Pharm and Mr. Graft!

Pharm and Graft have been using a Kyrptonite Klaw to make walking weapons out of some of Superman’s biggest rogues. With Lex’s help, Supes has been able to fend off attacks from Parasite and Silver Banshee. The latter damaged his super-hearing in their encounter so badly, Superman can’t hear Lex’s cries for help in an attempt on Lex’s life.

When this annual picks up is another side story happening involving the Daily Planet (the longtime newspaper of Metropolis). Perry White, the Planet’s Editor-In-Chief, has taken a sabbatical. Lois Lane is now acting EIC.

While Superman is fighting Toyman, Lois is writing an article piece on the latest of Metropolis’ events. As it has been coined, the “City Of Tomorrow” is now the “City Of Secrets”.

Addressing the Planet staff writers, Lois is not happy hearing the pitches she is given for the paper. Lois breaks them out of their normal habits and assigns them to cover something completely new.

Where is Superman during all this? Does Lois’s challenge go over well? And what about Lex? Readers sit back and see how the reporters fare with being outside their comfort zones. Catching a glimpse of how things fare after the initial arc sets up events with big implications down the road. The final act will have huge reveals and surprises that will shake up things in a manner readers won’t see coming. Brace for a final image that will be one fans will be talking about with much excitement as this story concludes.

Breakdown: Williamson crafts a great breakpoint in between story arcs with a creative twist for the annual. Taking the reporters out of their comfort zones made for some entertaining interactions. The Jimmy Olsen/Lisa Lombard/Supercorp story was a fun segment considering Olsen’s recent events. The strongest reporting piece will be Cat Grant and Marilyn Moonlight. The panels are brief but knowing Cat’s history involving Toyman, readers can feel the pain of Cat’s words when she lets her guard down for the brief moment.

Williamson does balance in a bit of super-heroics in with the reporting commencing. The Toyman story is brief but continues the overall story of Dr. Pharm and Mr. Graft without taking anything away from Lois’s gauntlet challenge to the Planet staff. The closing moments bring the issue to a finish with some very shocking moments. Like previously mentioned, Williamson is giving fans much to talk about with each issue elevating the Man Of Steel to new heights.

Giving each reporter their own art team for their stories gave a fresh approach to the story. Readers can sense that each team presents their arcs in varying ways to reflect the difference in reporters views. Asrar sets up a strong two-page full piece depicting Superman doing what he does best. The Jimmy Olsen portion had more of a brighter feel to the visuals. In comparison, Cat Grant’ had a gritter and more serious tone to it. The final moments conclude with an equally excellent two-page spread before ending with an image fans will be raving about. There is much to praise with the artwork featured in this special edition.

Taking the spotlight away from the Man of Steel and placing it on the Daily Planet team proved for an enjoyable read. Williamson and the teams present a grounded story recapping previous stories while setting the foundation for another go-around that simply can’t be missed. ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN: JON KENT #6 (DC COMICS)

For this entry, we are diving into the Dawn Of DC with one of their best titles. If anyone hasn’t checked out the SUPERMAN line lately, you are missing out on some of the best work in comics. Every book on the line has been hitting the high marks. This week’s entry hasn’t misfired with its’ current story arc. It also doesn’t hurt having one of comics best writers steering the ship either.

ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN: JON KENT #6 by TOM TAYLOR, CLAYTON HENRY, JORDIE BELLAIRE and WES ABBOTT present the conclusion of “The Injustice Saga”. Let’s waste no more time and jump right into the story finale, shall we?

In this story, Jon Kent has to confront a threat that has inflicted a deep personal wound on him: Ultraman. after stealing years of his childhood away by imprisoning him, Jon has to stop him on the evil mission of killing Clark Kent’s throughout the Multi-verse. Val Zod and Red Tornado (Lois Lane) from earth 2 are accompaning him on this mission. Once the group tracks Ultraman down on another planet, they head to attack with a Phantom Zone Imprison device.

During their encounter, the plan backfires. Ultraman gets the upper-hand and sends Val and Lois into the Phantom Zone. Using all the power he can muster, Jon unloads an attack onto Ultraman. The blow drains him and leaves him at Ultraman’s mercy. Things look bleak until Ultraman is killed by a figure many fans know: Superman! But this is no ordinary Superman. This is the Superman of the INJUSTICE Universe!

Jon has stumbled onto the planet where Superman has taken over by force. During his time there, Jon assesses what has happened. Old friends have changed. The man he knows as Superman is not who he envisions. After tracking down Batman of this world, the picture is made clearer. However, his best friend from home, Damian Wayne, clearly isn’t his now. After putting a tracker on him, Batman’s resistance forces are discovered and captured by Superman’s Justice League.

With the declaration that Batman and Harley Quinn will be publicly executed, Jonathan now is tasked to stop the entire Justice League to save their lives. Can the young hero find a way to save the day?

This issue begins with Superman addressing the league about Jonathan. With Superman’s feeling being conflicted, now seeing the son he never had, Cyborg and Wonder Woman prepare to handle matters if needed. Meanwhile Jonathan recharges by flying from the sun with a collision course at the Hall Of Justice. Systematically, Jonathan deals with The Flash, Hawkgirl, Hal Jordan and Wonder Woman in various ways.

With one final stop, Jonathan tries to talk with Damian Wayne once more. Meanwhile, Superman checks in on a prisoner Jon knows all to well: Jay Nakamura. Blaming him for blinding Jon, Superman prepares to attack!

Readers gear up for the battle no one was expecting! Can Jonathan defeat arguably the most corrupted version of his father the muti-verse has ever seen? The battle plays out differently than most would expect. It goes heavy into how Jonathan Kent is his own Superman. The final act is one that will leave a lasting impression. Rest assured, once the final page is done, there won’t be one comic fan that isn’t counting down the days until the next chapter.

BREAKDOWN: Taylor pulls off a fantastic conclusion to a story that displays the pure essence of Superman. Jon Kent has firmly set himself apart from any comparisons to his father with how he approaches this challenge. The way he engages the Justice League from the beginning of this issue (primarily with the Flash), Taylor presents Jonathan as a hero who perfectly understands a confusing conflict. On the other side, Taylor drives home how this Superman is struggling to deal with his personal loss. Even with the looming presence of Jonathan, he feels removed from worrying about a possible conflict.

The closing arc brings together moments readers won’t easily forget. The way Taylor structures Jonathan’s approach to the battle is catching. It is unorthodox in comparison to the big brawls superhero fights typically bring. The resolution of the conflict hits the emotional strings on readers as well. Taylor serves this with heart-string pulls as the true vision of hope stands before those witnessing this story. It is a great ending to a firmly engaging story.

Henry and Bellaire construct the visuals superbly for the finale. The credits opening page is noteworthy as the panel set-up builds for the reveal of Jonathan flying into action. It’s subtle but the panels built up the tension of what is forthcoming. The art team bring to life the other DCU heroes reactions to what Superman is up to and display a wide range of differing opinions. They also waste no time featuring how unbalanced he is becoming with Jonathan’s actions.

The ending is filled with a few big, half-page panels fitting for the moments. With what has been building up for five issues comes to a strong breaking point. Each character goes into this with unaligned views. Johnathan steals some of these moments leading into the “final shot” bringing the battle to an end. As much action that has been featured, it’s the emotional mannerisms that leave readers wanting more while waiting for the next chapter to begin.

FINAL POINT: 10 OUT OF 10

Taylor, Henry and the team leave readers with an emotional conclusion as Jonathan Kent’s tenure as the Man of Tomorrow is put to its most personal test. The internal struggles take off with Taylor’s writing. It’s matched with the art team fortifying how deeply personal this conflict was. This is one story fans won’t want to miss on New Comic Book day this week!

SUPERMAN: THE LAST DAYS OF LEX LUTHOR #1 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, the “fight forever” saga between one of DC Comics most historic rivalry adds a new chapter to its legacy with a new DC Black Label series! Since its’ inception in 2018, it has provided legendary stories for some of the DCU’s most legendary characters. Seeing these icons in a new spotlight is always a treat and the latest line entry is no exception considering the creative team behind it.

Superman: The Last Days of Lex Luthor by Mark Waid, Bryan Hitch, Kevin Nowlan, David Baron, Richard Starkings and Tyler Smith (Comcraft) give readers much to ponder as the Man Of Steel is challenged by his greatest adversary on a level he might not be ready for. Let’s not delay any longer and take a closer look at the end of an era?

The story begins with Clark Kent at his desk at the Daily Planet. Before working on his latest story, Clark has a flashback to his younger days. In this vision, Clark is outside of a burning building, screaming for someone to open the metal door. That someone is Lex Luthor.

Back in the present, The byline on the computer screen reads “The Last Days Of Lex Luthor” by Clark Kent.

From here, the story switches to Bangladesh. A ship at sea is rocked by surprising rough seas. The cause of this isn’t mother Nature. It is a high-tech ship that starts to attack the city of Meghwip. The ship starts attacking the island in an attempt to sink it. Luckily, someone has shown up to save the people.

Moving faster than a speeding bullet, Superman starts keeping people away from the danger at hand. Once the crisis had been dealt with, Superman wastes no time exposing who is behind the attack: Lex Luthor!

Where this would be a “normal” meeting between the two, this encounter couldn’t be more different. Lex reveals the attack was nothing more to get Supes’s attention! Once he had it, Lex drops a bombshell: he is dying and he needs Superman’s help!

Proving to be the smartest in the room, Lex makes him an offer he can’t refuse. How does Superman respond? Will he turn down his greatest rival’s plea for help? Can he? Readers see the beginnings of Superman’s ethics placed into question as the Man of Tomorrow is haunted by his past with an uncertain future looming. Get ready for what can only be the beginnings of a classic!

BREAKDOWN: Waid crafts a conflict that proves to carry more weight than even the Man of Steel can muscle. The historic feud between Clark and Lex has stood the test of time. Seeing Lex have to swallow some pride displayed the gravity of his problems. For the man with all the answers to be left left denied was a side of Lex few have ever seen. Waid never lets his confidence be deflated during this entire issue.

The attack in Bangladesh is prime example of this. Lex’s willingness to destroy and endanger thousands for a meeting plays into his “Holier than thou” mystique. Attacking Clark at his core: Being the symbol of hope in hopelessness is one of the most dangerous blows. Seeing Superman rise to this challenge without breaking his ethics made for compelling drama. Tying in a backstory to their youth is a nice touch sending things into the next chapter.

Whenever Bryan Hitch is attached to a project, readers know to expect bold pieces of art to hit key points. The two page spread on Lex’s ship attack is an easy section readers will connect with. Brilliant classic full Superman Page which fueled this portion of the issue. Lex’s arrogance poured thru the panel’s with Hitch nailing the reactions during their one-one-one “talk”.

The flashback moments added another detail to the story. Seeing how Clark stands by Lex’s side even back then portrays to the readers how dedicated he is to being the symbol of hope. Hitch makes this story feel larger than the pages. With each detail on the areas illustrated, the feel readers will have in this issue is like cinema on the big screen. Solid closing panels tying some loose ends while engaging in the reasons why Lex hates Clark.

FINAL POINT: 9.5 OUT OF 10

Doing a mature themed Superman story is never easy. in one debut issue, Waid, Hitch and the team lay the foundation with a captivating story filled with vibrant imagery. The endless battle takes things to another level with a can’t miss issue for New Comic Book Day!

BATMAN SUPERMAN: WORLDS FINEST #17 (DC COMICS)

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out the latest installment of a DC COMICS series that is an absolute fan-favorite amongst comic readers. Whenever “Superman” or “Batman” mentioned, the expectations are high considering their place in pop culture. The current run of WORLD’S FINEST by MARK WAID and DAN MORA has brought a modern feel to those characters without losing their classic appeal.

World’s Finest #17 by Waid and Mora (along with Tamra Bonvillain and Steve Wands) caps off the latest story arc hitting the local comic shops on July 18th. Let’s see how events play out, shall we?

What started as a murder investigation has spiraled into something more than anyone expected. Simon Stagg, longtime business rival of Bruce Wayne, is found dead. All clues pint to Rex Mason aka METAMORPHO as the lead suspect. When the World’s Finest start digging into if a hero became a murderer, they stumble into an unexpected truth. NEWMAZO, an updated version of a Justice League rogue capable of stealing powers, has been behind this event.

While targeting billionaires and controlling some of the most brilliant minds concerning robotics in the DCU, this new threat appears to be at the door of victory. The plan of a robotic revolution is underway. Being bound by electrical collars, the duo now stands before the upgraded android and his main weapon: Ultra-Morpho. With some creativity, Batman and Green Arrow defeat the enforcer, severing the collars. With a plan in place and the impersonated billionaires (including Stagg) now free, it’s time for the good guys to fight back. How will the heroes stop him with the combined might of some of the most power beings in the world?

This issue kicks off with Batman taking the attack to Newmazo, who was in disguise as Supergirl. Tying him up in a version of the Lasso Of Truth, Newmazo is ready to end the Dark Night. Those plans are faulted when Martian Manhunter and the real Supergirl crash the party. However the advantage is short lived as Newmazo acquires their strength. Batman and Doc Magnus (from Metal Men Fame) scramble for a plan.

How can you stop something that can mimic powers on a high intellect? Readers sit back and see how one final attempt is made to stop world extinction. With an event drawing in the heaviest of hitters in the DCU, the action feels box-office as an unlikely player plays a crucial role. The resolution plays to perfection and will send readers home on a high note with another fantastic story in the books.

BREAKDOWN: Waid continues to prove why he’s one of the best writers in comics. Crafting the challenge of a villain who can match and surpass the heroes at their own game is no easy task. Seeing Batman find a solution with his detective skills is always a great joy to read. The relationship with Superman is presented with a special event feel, which after all these ears, is tough to pull off. Juggling the massive supporting cast is worked to perfection.

Being an old school DC reader, seeing the Metal men, T.O. Morrow and Metamorpho featured in a story like this is amazing. This issue and series encompasses the superhero lore without making the story feel dated. The payoffs are huge to compliment the action. The closing act ties up loose ends nicely. Pacing kept everything moving in a rising direction until the final battle. The issue is everything you want from a superhero comic: action, drama and a reminder of why superheroes are still relevant in this day and age.

Can there be a more perfect artist for this series than Dan Mora? Without question, Mora defines bringing big-scale action to the comics genre. Form the opening fight between Newmazo and Batman, Mora sets things in motion radiating of excitement. Even during the battle, Mora never lets Newmazo lose his evil smile as the action heats up. Counter-balancing that is Batman reacting to events. Leading the most powerful beings in the DCU in a losing effort, readers can connect with the dangerous fight. Seeing Batman in this state gives the feel that he can actually fail and lose.

The action never slows down as Mora architects some excellent two page spreads that are nothing but extraordinary. The final battle begins with a dramatic reveal, setting the stage for a showdown fans will be elated to see. Closing the fight is an incredible one full page panel with a character that can be the only one to end things at this stage. The closing act gives readers some fun character moments with the expressions featured. From start to finish, the issue doesn’t disappoint.

FINAL GRADE: 9.5 OUT OF 10

The best superhero book at the LCS gives readers a classic finale that needs to be witnessed. Waid’s superb writing and Mora’s stunning visuals closes off the “Tomorrow” storyline in epic fashion. This series needs to be in your collection before calling it a wrap on New Comic Book Day!

DOOM PATROL Season Four part 1 review (HBO MAX)

Welcome to a very special edition of Parlay points, the comic book blog to the ODPH Podcast. For this entry, we are checking out the return of one of the best television/streaming shows, let alone best comic book shows to hit the airwaves. Making its’ season four debut on HBO Max on December 8th, DOOM PATROL is back with an all new season! From their comic debut in DC Comics in 1963 to being one of the initial starter shows for the DC Universe service in February 2019 (along with “Titans” which just returned to HBO Max a few wees back), the quirky superhero team has won over fans with their unique adventures.

Season Four kicks off a very busy season for the heroes as they are slated to have a brand new series, “The Unstoppable Doom Patrol” by Dennis Culver and Chris Burnham, featured as a part of DC Comics’ new “Dawn Of DC” initiative slated in March 2023. I can’t stress enough: if you like what you’ve seen thus far on the show, make sure to sign up for DC Comics Infinite and check out some of their great comic stories. You will see the influence of the Grant Morrison run throughout the tv series.

Speaking of the series, DOOM PATROL will debut its’ first two episodes on December 8th with single episodes running thru January 5th before taking break and resuming later in 2023. The ODPH podcast was granted early screening privileges to the series premiere so here is out SPOILER FREE review!

Doom Patrol Season Four - Airing on HBO Max starting December 8th

In case you are not familiar with the Doom Patrol, they are a group of super powered individuals who are flawed but still push forward somehow saving the world in the process. The team is comprised of:

Elasti-Woman (April Bowlby) who can stretch her skin but struggles to maintain it,

Negative Man (Matt Bomer), who radiates a dark energy being inside of him

Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), who’s multiple personalities each have their own powers

Robotman (Brendan Fraser), who’s human brain was installed into a robotic body

All of which were at one point being helped by Dr. Niles Caulder (Timothy Dalton) until a massive reveal in season 1 fractures everything. Cyborg (Joivan Wade), the longtime member of the Teen Titans and most recently the Justice League, was added to this line-up for the series since the beginning. Cyborg is half man, half robot following an accident at his father’s lab. Joining the team this season is Madame Rouge (Michelle Gomez), a “frenemy” last season who can change her shape.

Throughout the previous seasons, the team has dealt with their haunting pasts, personal discoveries and encountered a wide variety of characters such as Danny the Street, Mr. Nobody, Kipling, Gargaux The Decimator and the Sisterhood of Dada to name a few. To say there is no show like this on TV/Streaming is an understatement. The adventures have lived up to their comic book legacy leaning heavily into their time on the “DC Vertigo” Mature Readers and “Young Animal” imprint style of story. It stands out on its own due to its incredible ensemble cast.

How Diane Guerrero hasn’t won an Emmy for this role is a complete travesty in my humble opinion. The same can be said for Frasier, Bowlby and Bomer who each have had standout arcs within the first three seasons. This show transcends the typical super hero formula as its strongest themes are how these individuals deal with their own personal issues and push forward to do the right thing, even if they have no shot of winning. Heading to season four, the bar has been set very high for this show. Does it hit the mark?

Doom Patrol Season Four - Airing on HBO Max starting December 8th

The answer is a resounding YES! Season Four kicks off with the group “working” as a team under the leadership guise of Elasti-Woman. The first mission viewers see goes off as one would expect with this team and is a perfect way to kick the season. From here, the team’s plan of a simple trip post mission goes drastically wrong. With a detour into the future, the Doom Patrol gets exposed to what might be the end of the world and at what cost it might take to stop it.

From the initial start, viewers can bank on another strong season from Diane Guerrero, who handles such a complex character with seemingly ease switching personas as per the story direction. Jane’s story continues to be one of the noteworthy plots of this show. Guerrero persists making Jane a must watch factor of this show. However, the one character to keep an eye on this season will be Jiovan Wade’s Cyborg. From the offset, he looks to have a big story line on the horizon. This will be a great upgrade for Cyborg, as he’s been the “outsider” of the group for quite some time. Personally, I think the banter back and forth between Bowlby and Gomez, who is such a great addition to the show, will make for quite a few memorable scenes.

This season doesn’t stray away from the winning formula that has made the show such a hit from the beginning. The writers continue to embrace the challenge of each individual’s struggles while braving the offbeat surroundings they find themselves in. Viewers can easily connect and root for this group of misfit toys because each actor isn’t holding back from adding to the emotional depth of their characters. For as much as this show doesn’t fit into a certain mold, it makes its own that more shows should follow.

FINAL POINT: Let’s get weird for all the right reasons! Season Four of Doom Patrol comes out the gates swinging with a perfect blend of delight and dysfunction. The story looks as it will challenge the team more than they ever have been before. Viewers can tag along and witness strong performances from Guerrero, Fraser, Bomer and the team as they navigate to find a way to help save the world and each other in the process.
