*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
The plight of the Gods turns to violence for the majority of this chapter. Ram V. goes in on the frustrations of High-Father. The flashback sequence foreshadows the impending attack from the Nyctari. It shows the readers a very different HighFather than we’ve seen in this series. There is no long wait for business to pick up with conflict. One character stands head and shoulders amongst most in this sequence. Shadowfall steals this portion with a breakout moment of this chapter.
Back on Earth, the Frees have their hands full on many fronts. Protecting the child from humans is one thing. Stopping Orion is a whole other issue. There’s plenty to enjoy with this scrap. Its’ conclusion (for now) executes another domino to fall. This runs side-by-side with the battle of New Genesis. Heading into the closing act, Ram V. twists more burdens onto HighFather’s group. Once the final page appears, choices are made that can’t be taken back. The writing reflects the deep thought made for the heavy choice. It’s a strong finish until the battle resumes next chapter.
Chang takes the flashback staple for this issue. The panels burst with optimism. Seeing Highfather in an almost jovial state is a far cry from the present. Once the time jump happens with Cagle and company, war has been declared. Nyctari start with a near full page image. They had met and defeated by Shadowfall’s presence. The art gives her a distinct showcase of skill. It’s capped off by a superb full page image.
Earth’s battle is much smaller in comparison. Big Barda handling human attacks carries a strong sense to it. The difference between her and Mister Miracle’s more playful demeanor is very clear. Readers watch as he attempts to diffuse the tension. This disappears once Orion appears via half page image. Their action scenes pop due to Napolitano’s lettering.
Events shift back to New Genesis for a few epic pages. Cagle’ art truly crafts the brutality of war. It also leaves readers with a firm landing spot. Highfather makes a call that a half page image screams out. This whole issue had excellent art that readers will rave about.
OVERALL GRADE: 9.3
New Genesis is attacked! The New Gods unleash their wrath on the Nyctari but is it enough? Ram V.’s writing sets a fast pace driven by action. The mesmerizing art on display from Cagle and company will floor readers. That chapter will be one fans will be talking about.
