ONCE AND FUTURE #24 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH podcast. On tis edition, we’re catching up on one of my favorite comics on the market right now: Once & Future by BOOM Studios. This imaginative story created by Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, & Ed Dukeshire never ceases to surprise me each month. Where else do you get crazy monsters, perfect character moments with Bridgette McGuire & one of the most creative flips on the King Arthur mythos? Issue #24 is the latest chapter so let’s not waste any more time & jump in, shall we?

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue kicks off right where we left our heroes: Bridgette & co are trying to assess a possible ally or enemy in their fight. It’s an interesting back and forth but ends the only way it can: Taking a risk and closing With a great Bridgette line. I’m not gonna spoil that here but it did bring a smile out when I read it. She is one of the best written characters in comics without question.

The majority of the issue shifts to the battle between both Arthurs that has been brewing for quite some time now. The battle is finally had at Badon, which there’s a very cool flashback scene for. This does not disappoint. Very cool imagery happening here. The resolution was very “Once and Future” and definitely not a bad thing. How the fallout will play from here should be fun to read.

The ending of this issue is what most fans will be buzzing about. Bridgette and her team make a play to get some more help to fight the Arthurs & it’ one of the most legendary “People’s champions” in history!

Gillen’s writing of this issue was very solid. Like previously stated, how Bridgette is written makes her one of the best characters in comics. Being the most experienced to face the threats at hand, She always comes off calm, strong and ready with the one-liners. The battle between the Arthurs was a fun moment as well. How Merlyn played a factor in this was interesting. Never thought I would hear that line yelled in battle but that’s the brilliance of Once & Future’s writing.

Dan Mora delivers on the action yet again here. The moments all have that “big fight feel” & the battles are literally jumping off the pages. The visuals really added another level to the story going on with the Arthurs. The battle was brutal, as it should be. One of the staples of Once and Future is their action. This issue doesn’t fail in bringing that front and center here.

THE HARBINGER #4 (VALIANT ENTERTAINMENT 2022)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH Podcast. On this edition, the “Year Of Valiant” shines bright with one of the best books at the LCS right now: The Harbinger by COLLIN KELLY, JACKSON LANZING, ROBBI RODRIGUEZ, RICO RENZI & HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU by Valiant Entertainment.

The book has been a consistently solid read since the character of Peter Stanchek has resurfaced in the Valiant Universe. Currently, the latest story involves Stanchek remembering who he is…literally, while the rest of the world is after him. Issue #3 gave a very strong cliffhanger that gave readers some questions that need immediate answers. Let’s see if issue #4 delivers on that, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

To say Peter Stanchek is a complex individual is an understatement. While being one of Valiant’s most powerful beings, he is also one of the most damaged. Thru this current series, we’ve seen Peter as someone finding himself and who he’s supposed to be. By the end of last issue, we find that his past (literally) might have caught up to him.

“The Renegade” claims to be Peter Stanchek as well. Readers get some clarity on this question right from the start. In an “Angel/Devil” balance type of way, readers see that the Renegade is build from all of Peter’s darker experiences. The overall creative team brings this battle to life very well with use of different color schemes. It’s a very cool look at the insight of a character such as Stanchek & how his actions made him into something else…literally.

The resolution to all this sets a new stat quo into the man currently claiming to be “The Harbinger.” The phrase “Be Better” has never had so much deeper meaning behind it & the people of the Valiant Universe had better be ready for what’s coming….good and bad.

It might sound like a broken record at this point, but what Kelly & Lanzing are doing in this book is so different than what you see in superhero comics today. With a character as infamous as Stanchek is, the writers have really broken him down and given him some new sides to this character that readers have never seen before. What an antagonist to create for our hero here! It’s a great take on a character that isn’t exactly the most innocent yet trying to be a hero when it’s all said & done.

Rodriguez’s art in this book continues to be a perfect compliment to the story happening here. The imagery to show what’s going on in Stanchek’s mind gives the pages a completely stand-out vibe. Readers can basically “feel” what’s happening within this story. Quieter flashbacks mixed with excellent color balancing gives the fight in this issue a stronger presence.

Valiant’s best book continues it’s hot streak with another incredible issue. Peter Stanchek has never been more polarizing and interesting. The fallout from this issue will be something readers should be buzzing about for at the shops this week. “Year Of Valiant” might be the motto but #BeBetter might be the hashtag of 2022. Amazing job by the entire creative team here. Get your copy asap!

THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA (PRIME VIDEO 2022)

The Legend Of Vox Machina” is FINALLY hitting Prime Video January 28th! In case you’re not familiar with how this show came to be, it’s an incredible story. Vox Machina was the first livestreamed campaign story to come from Critical Role, a media company created by a group of voice actors who had been taking part in RPG’s dating back to 2012. Their content was a major hit & in 2019, they started a Kickstarter to produce an animated project based around Vox Machina. The Kickstarter was extremely successful, raising over $11 MILLION Dollars. It broke records at Kickstarter for film & Video projects. From there, the simple idea from one animated special has now grown into a hot content property picked up by Amazon Studios, which has signed off for 2 seasons & 24 episodes in total!

Credit: Amazon Studios

The ODPH team was in attendance for this show’s panel at NYCC 2021 & this was the first time we met the characters of Vax’ildan (Voiced by Liam O'Brien), Vex’ahlia (Laura Bailey), Percy de Rolo (Taliesin Jaffe), Pike Trickfoot (Ashley Johnson), Grog Strongjaw (Travis Willingham), Keyleth (Marisha Ray), Sylas Briarwood* (Matthew Mercer - *Mercer also voices more characters on the show) & Scanlan Shorthalt (Sam Riegel). The NYCC panel did an amazing presentation & I’ve had my eye on this show since.

I was fortunate to be allowed an early screening of the show before the January 28th premiere:

*** NON SPOILER REVIEW ***

The show is an absolute must-watch! It is easily accessable for viewers who aren’t familiar with these characters. You will be hooked within minutes with fun banter & get the vibe about what’s behind this group of misfits that you can’t help but root for instantly. One thing of note going in: this is a NSFW show with dialogue and situations so keep that in mind, but it takes nothing away from what you’re seeing on screen. Viewers will also hear the friendship between the voice actors shine thru here as well. There is such a fun energy about this show that it will no doubt hit all expectations.

The animation style from Titmouse really gives this show a unique look and feel. The moments feel big and presenting such an elaborate fanatsy world with ease is something to applaud. Each character is given enough moments to capture viewers attention & lock them in on the story going on. There is no question by the end of the 2nd episode (at the latest), you’ll have your favorite member of this group picked out.

Even if RPG/fantasy isn’t your usual choice of programing, you definitely want to give “The Legend Of Vox Machina” a watch. Vox has a very likeable cast that keeps you engaged with every challenge thrown at them. At the end of the day, this “misfit family” of characters & their stories will win viewers over with excellent voice acting & superb animation. The first 3 episodes drop January 28th on Amazon Prime Video

Let me know what you think of “The Legend of Vox Machina” on Twitter. As always, thanks for reading.

POWER RANGERS #15 (BOOM! STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH podcast. It’s time once again to check out one of the best stories going on in comics: The Eltarian War taking place within the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers comic universe from Boom Studios! Power Rangers #15 by Ryan Parrott, Francesco Mortarino, Marco Renna, Raul Angulo, Sara Antonellini & Ed Dukeshire is the latest installment of this epic story. The tension & stakes have never been higher with the fate of the universe in the hands of the Rangers. Can they stop the threat of the Empyreals? Let’s not wast any more time & jump right into this issue, shall we?

*** POTENTIAL SPOILERS WARNING ***

The issue wastes no time hitting readers with big actions. The Empyreals are bringing the fight to the heroes on Earth. However, once a certain White Tiger Dragonzord (FTW!!!!!!!!) jumps into the fight, it actually feels like maybe, just maybe, things might start turning toward the Rangers favor. It also is one of the best battles you’ll see in the MMPR Universe.

Meanwhile, the face-off at the center of the war heats up more. The history of Zordon, LordZedd & Zartus has been one of the best parts of this saga & we now get a big payoff to the buildup. With the uneasy tension between these three grabbing readers on every page, the moments shared in this issue will not disappoint.

The rest of the issue keeps the action going with more epic moments. Even with the odds against them, the Rangers are holding their own & with some unplanned help, readers gets another amazing moment. Fans of the Omega Rangers are gonna be super amped up for a certain section of this book that I won’t spoil but when it hits, readers will be jumping out of the chairs hyped. There’s also a very cool cliffhanger to close this chapter of the Eltarian War on that you need to see first!

Just when I don’t think this story can get any better, Ryan Parrott pulls out a moment that makes me as a reader very amped up to read more! At this stage of the war, there are a great deal of moving storylines that all need ample time to grow. Parrott does a great job of balancing these out to where it feels like no one is being overlooked in such a big battle. One of the strongest arcs in this story continues to steal scenes when written: Zordon vs Lord Zedd vs Zartus. With such heavy hitters involved, readers can easily follow along and certain moments will hit to get an instant reaction.

Mortarino gets a small split of art Duties with Marco Renna in this issue. Nothing skips a beat with the quality here. Mortarino’s “monster” fight scenes feel epic and bring out the heaviness of the battle moments. It’s everything readers will want out of these fight scenes. The art contrast also works with the Zordon group fight as well. Giving these moments time with such an ensemble cast isn’t easy but the creative tea really does a fantastic job with this issue.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH podcast. On this edition….The Year Of Valiant is officially kicked off with Shadowman #5 by CULLEN BUNN, PEDRO ANDREO, JORDIE BELLAIRE & CLAYTON COWLES for Valiant Entertainment. The latest run of adventures from Valiant’s supernatural hero, Jack Boniface, has been an excellent read with the last installment giving readers chills to what horror awaits our hero & the rest of the Valiant Universe. If you haven’t checked out that run (Issues 1-4 written by Bunn & art by Jon Davis-Hunt), make a point to dive in. However, issue #5 is a great jump-on point for new readers as well. How does the next phase of the adventures of Shadowman kick off? Let’s check this issue out, shall we?

First and foremost, Valiant kicks off this issue with a quick recap page explaining Boniface to readers. It’s a subtle move but one I think is very important to welcome new readers into stories. I really enjoy the set-up for the page’s look (no Baron Samedi is a slight bummer, but very cool artwork makes up for it).

The issue kicks off in New England with a child practicing some dark magic in attempts to resurrect his dead mother. What he gets is a lot more than what he bargained for. Meanwhile, in New Orleans, readers get a glimpse of a moment of normalcy for our hero. playing sax and dealing with an old friend, Alyssa. During this exchange, Jack breaks down some lingering thoughts that have carried over from the previous arc. Things are changing faster than he can control & you can hear the doubt in his voice. Even with some possibilities for help, Jack feels like this is something to handle alone.

He gets his wish as he leaves to handle a big threat. Once it’s settled, Jack focuses his attention to unveiling a possible plan to solve this issue once & for all. At the same time, there are others watching these moves & have plans to thwart Boniface’s plans for their own games. Readers are given a solid cliffhanger when an old threat makes a bold proclamation.

Few people have mastered the level of horror like Bunn has. The opening sequence is very bone-chilling and gives the rest of the issue a strong start. Bunn also creates a fun sequence where Jack is being “normal” in New Orleans. We haven’t seen too much of this in recent issues & this is a fun compliment to the serious story being weaved. There are great building moments throughout this issue for the war that is coming within these pages.

Andreo makes a big splash with the art for this issue. The panels deliver on strong action scenes (see the previous panel in this review) that give a big impact for Boniface’s return. It’s balanced out very well with the quieter moments with the young child. No matter what character Andreo is thrown here, he really brings something special out of each page he does. For new readers, this duo makes a dynamic impression. Longtime Valiant/Shadowman fans are in for a treat here as well.

This chapter kicks off with a flashback to a previous battle over 10,000 years ago involving Zordon, Zartus & Zophram (aka Lord Zedd). Seeing this backstory adds a lot of extra layers to the present time where Zordon, fully ready to fight, confronts Lord Zedd. This fight does NOT disappoint. There’s so much emotion going on between the tow. Readers are in for a BIG treat here. Let the action begin!

While this is happening on the moon, Earth has its’ hands full with the Empyreals making their move against our heroes. Seeing the elevated stakes brings the best out of the Rangers’ forces. Zartus is still pulling strings in the background until something happens that changes the course of events into dire territory. However, there is one last action taken on the last page that really sets the tempo for the next arc in this saga. Great cliffhanger ending.

The creative team delivered on the fight we’ve been waiting to see. Parrott captures all the build up tension between Zedd & Zordon so once they clash, it takes this conflict to a personal level that readers feel with each panel. The back and forth conversation between these two will give fans a moment they won’t forget when it concludes. The battle on Promethea is nothing to be overlooked in this issue as well. Parrott’s build for this whole saga has been excellent & this event lives up to the hype without question!

Renna’s art matches the moments perfectly. Translating the tension between Zordon and Zedd during their fight is no easy task, but it is pulled off flawlessly here. The Promethea battle has many characters involved but Renna balances them all out with enough time without taking anything away from the threat of the Empyreals. There is much to be excited about with this issue.

Overall, Mighty Morphin’ #15 continues on the strong presentation going on in the Eltarian War. Excellent storytelling mixed with solid art gives readers a must-read at the LCS this week. I can’t stress enough: if you’re just jumping into this story now, for whatever reason, make a point to go back & read the lead-in issues along with the previous Eltarian war issues. BASILISK #6 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH Podcast. *** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

First and foremost, how incredible is Jonas Scharf’s cover art for this issue!

This issue picks up on Hannah, who’s vowed vengeance for what the Chimera has done to her family, & Regan, a former member of the Chimera, track the evil force down to their current location. The Chimera, who’s powers are based off the five senses, are making a stop at a shopping mall in their deadly journey. Once at the mall, Regan & Hannah take their shot (literally) to end this evil once and for all.

However, things do not go their way. Another factor they didn’t expect makes a move. This causes for some fast-paced action & a solid cliffhanger for next issue. Readers are also treated to more of Hannah’s back story before the Chimera crashed into her life.

If there’s one thing to bank on when you read Basilisk, you’re guaranteed when the Chimera attacks, it’s brutal & no punches are held. Bunn crafts a very strong narrative with Hannah & Regan’s plan to stop the Chimera. Readers can feel the desperation in Hannah’s actions. She is a character that isn’t meant for this supernatural powered world but is trying by any means to embrace her role in it. The dynamic with her & Regan is something to watch as well. The “frienemies” vibe is very well noted here.

Scharf’s art continues to reflect this intense world masterfully. The Chimera are not nice people & don’t hold back on what they do. Scharf gives readers many examples of this throughout the issue. His art really shines with the action sequences with Hannah & the Chimera. Readers can feel the tension & see how brutal this battle truly is. When readers can feel how high the stakes are, the creative team has done their job & it shows here.

What I’m more intrigued with how Hannah’s backstory will play into the overall story. How it is presented is completely different from the rest of the book. We’ve now seen flaws in her character & how this will get mixed into present time remains to be seen. Excellent job all around.

The saga of the Chimera doesn’t slow down with this issue. Hannah’s mission to end them once and for all continues in a very strong direction. With the first trade paperback being released last week, this is a perfect time to get caught up on this book if you haven’t read Basilisk yet. *** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue opens up with Bridgette having a long standoff (via sniper rifle) with Nimue. This is not the typical Mother-Daughter relationship but would we expect anything “normal” here? Duncan & Rose can only just sit back and watch all this unfold. It’s a very dramatic sequence of events that carry through to an unlikely conclusion. Nimue’s story is gonna be one to keep an eye on in the future.

The rest of the issue is a wild trip through this mysterious world. Where else do you see Giants, magical creatures & knights of the round table all under one narrative? As for our heroes, we get left with an introduction to a new character that readers will have to guess whose side they’re on.

Gillen delivers on another solid adventure in this book. The standoff between Bridgette and her daughter drove this issue. Not as many wild battle scenes as recent issues have had, but the character moments between these two were very noteworthy. Readers are also treated to some imaginative storytelling as well. Any time we have a crazed giant, a deadly flying insect & magic beans in a sequence, it always jumps off the page. Few can pull it off as well as Gillen does.

Mora crushes it on the art duties yet again. The standoff panels where readers see Bridgette thru the scope is a very catching piece. It adds to the dramatic standoff. The side stories also are presented very strong. From the Knights “hunt” to the last page introduction, Mora keeps the story moving & gives each side story time to shine and stand-out on its own.

ZORDON…..LETS F*****G GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

This issue opens up with Zordon (now in his armor body) leading Trini & Jason of the Omega Rangers into a direct attack on Zartus’s ship. At this moment, if there was ever a shadow of doubt in your mind on why Zordon is such a legendary figure in Power Rangers lore, look no further at how he handles Zartus’ army.

Meanwhile, readers catch up with the good guys in Angel Grove. Matt, the new Green Ranger uses his powers to help with some search & rescue in Promethea. However , this move doesn’t come without consequences. Zartus’s army Sentry Force Four now tracks down our heroes with a melee ensuing.

Back on the ship, Zordon and his forces (now joined by members of the Rangers & the alliance are progressing forward to an ultimate showdown with Zartus. Zordon makes a decision that only he can make & takes on the battle by himself. Meanwhile back at Angel Grove, more re-enforcements come in to assist in the fight with Sentry Force Four. Some of the best action pages you will see in comics happen here.

However, there are two moments that will make readers jump out of their seats with excitement: Zartus arrives to Angel Grove with the Empyreals by his side & is greeted by one of the biggest fan moments you’ll see, then readers see Zordon has (apparently) defeated his adversaries on the ship but winds up now on the moon with a cliffhanger ending for the ages.

WOW, Parrott has outdone himself with this issue. The whole Eltarian War has had great pacing and epic moments for the Power Rangers Fandom but what we had go down in this comic was truly incredible. Zordon driving home the point (for anyone who didn’t think it) of how strong of a fighter he is really shined thru here. Parrott also crafted some excellent fan moments within this story. Seeing the unique pairing of characters of the Power Rangers Universe set a very strong tone for this issue.

When we talk of those fan moments that always stand out, Mortarino has a few panels that will have readers amped up when they see the characters on page. Considering how high the stakes are with this story, the art delivers on that emotion. Often times, the words “Big Fight Feel” gets thrown around but within this issue, there are quite a few panels that really capture it. The last page literally had me looking to see when the next issue is……the book is THAT good.

There is definitely a LOT happening within these pages. Andelfinger does a solid job with pacing the time jumps throughout this issue. New readers of the MMPR universe might have a small challenge at first catching up on who is who, but mid-way through, it becomes very clear what’s going on & where the story is heading. Longtime Power Rangers fans will absolutely savor what is going on within these pages. Great closing sequence to set up the stage for Issue #2.

Ragazzoni complements the story extremely well. It gives the story a unique feel that juggles detailed backgrounds with heavier moments. The final moments of MasterForge Namize brings that to the forefront. The hacked footage captures the dramatic moments with the final panel of the groups’ facial reactions driving home the point of how serious the threat is without giving away everything. Even the re-appearance of the Morphinaut elevates the action going on. There’s lots to enjoy here.

Aaron & Jace come into play as they try stopping the monster from doing more damage & death. The book changes pace back fifteen years to see Aaron & Jace taking some time away from the school to go on a bit of a sight-seeing/training adventure. Tynion & Brombal deliver on another strong piece of storytelling with this issue. At the heart & soul of this book is Aaron’s tragic end to his relationship with Jace. Seeing the initial beginnings of their relationship is only going to hit readers harder at the conclusion of this arc. Pacing and set-up is extremely done. For being a “book about monsters”, readers are treated to some excellent background layers to the main characters.

The art is solid for this issue as well. The main monster attacking the family is everything you want to establish why the monster hunters are the only ones to handle these threats. Shehan also handles the intimate moments of their relationship extremely well. It shows a different side to Aaron that will only impact the ending of his story more for the readers when they arrive at its’ ending.

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

“Who Is Peter Stanchek?” That’s the question that has been haunting this series since it’s debut. Stanchek, one of the most powerful beings in the Valiant Universe has no memories but everyone is looking for him. Is he a hero & is he something else? Unfortunately, he hasn’t gotten a lot of time to answer that question. He’s being tracked down but any action he makes causes a bigger reaction. Factor in no memories & we have some compelling scenes to endure for our main character.

After the events of last issue & battling the Warning, a group hunting down Psiots, Stanchek is now committed to being the hero needed during these trying times. Stanchek’s on a rescue mission to free Young Ago, a psiot stadning up for the people of Psiot City from the Warning.

With a fresh new superhero costume in place, The Harbinger is ready to rise up & fight. Readers are front row from this epic confrontation. The creative team delivers on the intensity and action. Knowing that this battle isn’t over just with the Warning, The Harbinger makes an attempt to take his offensive attack in a different direction with the public. It’s a very cool moment you need to see for yourself.

Readers are also left with a strong cliffhanger that will (possibly) finally answer some questions we’ve had since issue #1: “Who is Peter Stanchek?”

Just when you think this book has peaked, Kelly & Lanzing take it up a few notches with this issue. Stanchek assuming the mantle of the Harbinger symbolizes a new era in Psiot City. The battle he has with the Warning really drives that point home, It’s a crazy pace to balance but the writing team does an excellent job pulling it off. Even with how Stanchek comes to a resolution to the battle is unique. This story really transcends an ordinary super hero story into one of change and new beginnings.

Rodriguez continues his incredible work within these pages. The way Rodriguez manages to demonstrate Stanchek’s powers without taking away from the story is truly something special. Every moment after he suits up focuses on how Stanchek is using his powers. There is a lot of creativity in pulling these panels off. The two page spreads put a nice exclamation point on what the creative team is doing with this book.

First & foremost, how incredible is the cover by Lee Garbett… WOW! Amazing work!

Readers start off with B on a routine mission that goes a bit sideways in the Ukraine. During this mission, Jim, his ally, gets seriously hurt when they’re leaving the battle. Trapped behind enemy lines, they have to find their way to international territory to be extracted. During this time, there is a great deal of conversation breaking down B’s past & perspective. From there, readers gets some new insight on B & Jim but they also are witnesses to how they were both pawns in a greater scheme.

The writers really went into some different directions with this issue. From crafting an amazing battle sequence (check out the promo art featured here) to taking a trip through B’s past, Reeves & Kindt really show different layers to B. There is so much to this character that new readers will have much to take in. It’s not something we see in most characters with the complexity shown here.

Garney’s art knocks it out of the park again this issue. The tank scene alone really pops off the page. It’s a wild scene with B & Jim trying to recover the artifact in the Ukraine. Garney’s depiction of this is absolutely incredible. Even with the quieter moments between Jim & B, Garney makes the most to show B opening himself up without going into a full confession. There is so much strong work between these pages. Absolutely stellar work with this issue.

BRZRKR #6 continues on its’ complex tale of B. Being Half man/half god is more layered than readers might thing. Reeves & Kindt bring that to the forefront with this issue. This issue picks up with Troy Whittaker, a tech guru and public relations friend, is about to achieve his plan of world conquering starting with New York City. The tale he weaves to the public is not the true reflection of past issue’s events. The Singualrity are assisting with this but haven’t realized they’re pawns apart of this scheme. When the people of NYC don’t comply to this “new order”, Whittaker lashes out.

Freed from his imprisonment by some allies, Aric makes one last attempt to stop Whittaker. Meanwhile, Shanhara (thought erased from existence) deals with the Singualrity about what is really going on. From here, readers are treated to a solid resolution. It wasn’t what I had expected but I definitely enjoyed the conclusion of this arc.

Hopeless closes out this arc in a very imaginative way. When we think of X-O Manowar, we think big action & how the barbarian from another time utilizes his futuristic armor to solve the conflicts. Hopeless presented Aric in a new light during this story. What happens when you take the man from the armor? Is the armor the hero or is he really one? The back & forth between Aric & Shanhara answered that. Creative story telling really drove this point home. Considering the teaser for the next arc, Readers shouldn’t expect the calm ending to last very long.

Laiso’s art delivered solid moments during this issue. His depiction of Whittaker in his armor really stood out. However, the strongest visual moments were when Troy & the Singularity brought down New York City. Readers had a full comprehension of what Whittaker was capable of doing & how important it was for Aric to win. It was a solid compliment to what was the overall story arc for this run.

Parrott hits another home run with this issue. Breaking down Zordon & diving into his past is always a fun trip for readers. Seeing the back & forth between him and Billy was a very strong part of this book. It really drove home an emotional kick for readers. There was also great banter between the Rangers & Zedd’s troops. Goldar’s comments were very funny & gave a nice break to the seriousness of the story. Plus the build for the last page was classic. It definitely had a “Lets GO” moment to close the book out on.

Renna did another solid job with the art duties on this issue as well. The sequence where Billy is going thru with the Blue Emissary to track Zordon was visually impressive. Balancing out the multiple area of the story was not easy, but Renna & co. really make this event feel like a major game-changer for these heroes. That final page delivers a big exclamation point to this chapter!

Bunn & Scharf continue on ramping up the build for what will be a chaotic battle & it’s really hitting its’ stride this issue. Pacing on this issue works well comign off the heels of last issue’s major fight. Both sides are wounded & hurt but can’t afford to take time to rest. The sense of urgency is felt by all the characters. This works so well wit stakes being this high. Readers also get more insight on Regan and how her powers have some good Easter eggs to build off from moving forward in the book.

Scharf’s artwork shines throughout this issue as well. His portrayal of the Chimera really connects with the reader. The “Hotel Stay” is prime example of this. The scene works on portraying them as the evil beings they are while trying to have readers see their vision as well. Even the flashback sequences are drawn with a different style to make them stand out.

There is LOTS to enjoy with this issue. Gillien’s storytelling is strong throughout this issue. From an exciting opening sequence of events to the subtle quiet moments in the hunter’s office, this issue has a lot to build off for the readers. Even when the story takes some detours, it never feels like a pause from the overall story. There’s some many characters in this world that balancing isn’t easy. Gillen pulls this off extremely well & makes for a strong book.

The art….WOW.! Mora delivers on some amazing visuals in this book. The fantasy world pops right off the pages in this issue. Giant Lions? Check. Actual GIANTS? Check. There are so many incredible visuals in these pages that readers will have to do a few reads to see everything they might have missed (and that’s not a bad thing). Tynion hits another shot out of the park with this one. Aaron’s story is felt on each page. Readers can empathize with the range of emotions he’s going thru seeing Jace. THE HARBINGER #2 (VALIANT ENTERTAINMENT)

The first issue was explosive & amazing in bringing back one of Valiant’s most powerful & dangerous characters to the comic shelves. There’s a very unique vibe to this comic that makes it stand out. COLLIN KELLY, JACKSON LANZING, ROBBI RODRIGUEZ, RICO RENZI & HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU deserve all the credit for this! I’ve legit been counting down the days for issue #2 to drop so let’s not waste anymore time, shall we?

Perception is reality & the world might not be anything we see it as. At least that’s the vibe of Peter Stanchek who wakes up from seeing visions. Were they real or not…TBD but he doesn’t have time to sort that out. The police are hot on his trail due to last issue’s events.

When they arrive to apprehend our hero, another Psiot, Young Ago, is leading a stand-off. Before things escalate to a fever pitch, Stanchek turns himself in. At that moment, everything goes sideways as a group of powerful individuals known as The Warning show up to “take control”. There’s a name drop moment too that I definitely got excited about.

There’s some great action between Stanchek & this group, but when the smoke clears, Peter now finds a bit of purpose & his next direction of his journey. Meanwhile, readers are left with more questions with a reveal on the final pages.

Kelly & Lanzing are crafting something very special within these pages. The pacing on the book is superb. Readers get enough of certain moments without being lost in how fast Stanchek’s world is moving. The writers are also balancing what he thinks is real to not extremely well.

Considering how powerful of a character he is, Readers are also showing how broken Stanchek is before seeing his next move. His inner struggles with no memories bring his character down to a relatable level.

Robbi Rodriguez & the rest of the art team are absolutely crushing this book. The action scenes literally pop off the pages. Readers feel the emotions Stanchek is going thru. Lost, Hurt, & barely holding it together… there is a wide-range of emotions throughout this issue. It’s an absolute perfect compliment to the wild vision seen thru the Harbinger’s eyes.

Radford & Dunford deliver on another darkly fun ride with everyone’s favorite degenerate magician. The humor hits between Pocus & the Demon. Their “unique” relationship has some fun moments that stand out. Plus how fun is a demonic card game? There’s good story-building with Pocus’ assistant Emily as well. One of the strongest points of the book is how the creative team camouflages the darker story going on with quirky funny moments throughout.

The art team continues their good work this issue. Remember the demonic card game? Balondo makes that sequence of events shine. It’s a wild force of nature in its own right. Readers will really enjoy how that sequence of events unfolds. The final pages put a nice finish & good cliffhanger to close this issue out on.
