Let’s check out what this creative team is bringing, shall we?

Red Tag #1 - On Sale March 2nd

Creative: Rafael Scavone, Rafael Albuquerque and Roger Cruz

Art Credit: Roger Cruz & Rafael Albuquerque (Stout Club Entertainment and Comixology Originals).

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

The story centers around three friends: Lis (aka Lisa), Lu (aka Luciana) and Leco (aka Leandro) on the streets of São Paulo. These friends also share a passion for “pixo” (also known as pichação or pixação which is a style of tagging), which i showed later in the issue. After a flashback to 1984, The issue starts out with a man named Noronha gets red spray paint in his face and eyes by two figures on a motorcycle. His cell phone was taken in the process. However, this was no random robbery. The pair takes the cell phone in a noble cause to fix a wrong. In a city where good people are being unfarily treated, these three have decided to stand up and do something about it.

As is the case, no good deeds ever goes unpunished. The contents on the cell phone in question opens a world of trouble for these three with strong political implications for São Paulo. With highly dangerous information on that phone, certain people want to make sure it’s recovered and dealt with.

Very solid debut issue. Scavone & Albuquerque craft a strong story with good people fighting back against the morally corrupt. The three main characters, esp Lis and how she’s reacting to the reason behind the phone robbery brings that point to the forefront. Even with all this corruption around them, they find a way to still get their message out via the tagging. How this is all going to play out now that the phone has been exposed will be a fun story for readers to check out.

Let’s talk about the art for this issue. Cruz (along with CRIS PETER & BERNARDO BRICE) brings this story to life in a way few others could. Depicting the corrupt figures to showcasing the tagging scenes really adds elements to this book. Readers get the sense of why these three (especially Lis who’s the standout character in this book right now) care so much about fighting back. This book has a unique style to it which I very much enjoyed & know other readers will too. Absolutely enjoyed the cliffhanger ending as well.

Overall, Red Tag #1 is a great issue to check out. The creative team knock it out of the park with a slow build to a bigger conspiracy going on while having amazing visuals depicting the fight for good while surrounded by evil elements. If you haven’t signed up for Comixology Unlimited yet, I strongly recommend it and let this book be your introduction to this line of comics!

THE BOYS: DIABOLICAL (AMAZON STUDIOS/PRIME VIDEO)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH podcast. For this edition, we’re taking a look at a brand new show that will tide over fans of one of Prime Video’s biggest shows until its’ season 3 premiere. Amazon Studios’ “The Boys: Diabolical” just hit streaming on March 4th. It’s an animated series set in the insane world of “The Boys”, the smash TV show spawning from the comic created by Garth Ennis & Darick Robertson. The ODPH was allowed early screening access to this show. Let’s see what this is all about, shall we?

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

The show is 8 individual episodes done in various animation styles. Easiest comparison is “Star Wars: Visions” with how it’ set up. That is 100% the end of comparisons with that show. “Diabolical” has some absolutely mind blowing creativity going on with the likes of Seth Rogan, Awkwafina, Aisha Tyler, Andy Samberg & others bringing the world on Vought to the masses. The series captures the essence of the comic to the letter. It’s not for the faint of heart. It’s blunt, crude and in your face with some calmer moments mixed in (but not that much). It’s also very NSFW, with over the top violence when it happens. This should be a no-brainer if you’ve ever read/seen “The Boys”, but get ready if you haven’t.

“One Plus One Equals Two” is all about Homelander’s first mission. It shows a very different version of The Seven’s strongest member & gave great insight to his character you see now on the show. “I’m Your Pusher” is the most traditional “Boys” story you’ll see on “Diabolical.” “BFF’s” is one of the wilder episodes you’ll see here. Written by Awkwafina, this is the episode most fans will be raving about. It’s one of the more happier stories told on this show, but DAMN, when getting powers goes wrong…all I will say.

Speaking of that topic, My favorite episode of “The Boys: Diabolical” is “An Animated Short Where Pissed-Off Supes Kill Their Parents.” Usually when characters in comics get powers, the majority of them look completely normal after. It’s when they go wrong, it presents a great opportunity to tell a different story. This episode shows that chance and really runs with it. Trust me when I say this: You will never listen to Hootie & The Blowfish “I Only Wanna be With You” the same way after this.

Overall, “The Boys: Diabolical” brings the crazy & feel of the hit Amazon Studios show to animation without skipping a beat. It’s a fun watch that really allows for some very creative takes on the world of the Seven. The animation style is different for each show so there is literally something for everyone here. Hopefully, we will get a season 2 at some point. It’s well worth the watch. Check it out ASAP!

“The Boys: Diabolical” airs on Prime Video starting March 4th

Hit me up on Twitter and let me know what you thought of the show.

Thanks again to Amazon Studios for the early screener access & thank you for reading!

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue kicks off with our young heroes in full Mighty Morphin mode fending off evil invaders. The action is fast paced & doesn’t disappoint. Fighting the forces of the Dark Spector is not without cost. Their powers seem to be weakening after the battle. There’s only one person who might know how to stop this from happening: The Phantom Ranger. He explains some possibilities of theories that might work but as with science, nothing is guaranteed. All roads seem to be leading to the Morphin Grid.

Dark Spector makes plans ofr the grid as well. He sends his forces out & readers have another big battle on their hands. There is plenty of action to go around but at the issue’s end, there is an interesting cliffhanger to raise some questions going into next issue.

Andelfinger presents a lot of action in this issue. No complaints for that. With our young heroes in their new power suits, this was a solid way to showcase their capabilities along with pushing some limits as well. There wasn’t as much story building here persay, but there is more than enough action sequences to make up for it. This was a different feel for the series thus far & one I personally didn’t mind.

Ragazzoni showcased some great action pages in this book. Great use of 2 page spreads. Seeing the rangers finally let loose was very cool to see. Readers will definitely enjoy the latter half of the book with an excellent showcase of a certain weapon that changes the tide of the battle. There are a lot of great visuals to be found in this issue that gives this series a very unique feel.

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

Since the beginning of this series & story, the focus has been on Aaron and the assignment to eliminate Jace, his former love. The build has been very well down showcasing the heartbreak, esp. last issue. Readers jump in to the more recent past & see Jace has been working on plans of his own with an offer for Aaron. From there. the issue flashes back to where Jace makes his move for revenge against the House of Slaughter. Going after the elder statesman of the house has been the endgame for Jace all along. With Aaron out of the house, this leads to the final confrontation.

What Jace didn’t expect was Aaron to return to the house. After another threat emerges, Aaron has more issues to deal with. While this is going on, Jace continues on his plan moving forward in a very dangerous battle. With the entire house involved now, Aaron makes a choice that impacts all around him. No spoilers on that here but readers will have much to discuss post issue .

Tynion and company had a great story to kick this series off. The emotional pull on Aaron is felt thru this entire run. Even when Jace is having his final confrontation with the house, readers can feel the heightened tension until its resolution. Pacing was great and never let anyone not grasp the importance of the final arc. There is much about the first story that is a win. When a book can hit you in the emotions like House of Slaughter did, you know you have something special to check out.

The art really brought this story to life. Great use of 2 page spreads thru this issue. Shehan flourished in bringing the emotions of Jace and Aaron to the forefront here. From the emotional final battle & its resolution to Aaron’s choice, those moments jump off the pages in this book. For being a book about “monster hunters”, there are so many other layers to this book. It’s been an incredible ride thus far.

BRZRKR #7 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast! On this edition, we’re continuing the story of BRZRKR from Boom Studios! Brzrkr #7 by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, Ron Garney, Bill Crabtree, & Clem Robins has been a brutal & emotional ride thru the eyes of B, a half god, half man warrior challenging to find some peace.

Saying brutal is an understatement so know this when jumping in. The action pulls no punches. The book has had a unique vision of the toll of immortality & what cost it takes on some. Let’s jump into the latest issue & see how the saga of B’s quest is going now, shall we?

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue starts with B pushed to search his memories. With tampering with the mind of a half god/half man, it seems destine for disaster. Readers get a flashback sequence of sorts where B and Caldwell are discussing an artifact found in B’s last mission. It’s contents are extremely important & readers get to travel back in time to understand it’s history and importance to B. The actual item’s reveal is only overshadowed by Caldwell, who reveals he’s been studying B for years. No one on the planet knows more about B than him. It’s a very intriguing situation as Caldwell’s “cards” are now finally being laid out to see here.

Even with Caldwell’s true intentions revealed, B has some reservations about what is going on here. Caldwell goes all in by telling B about “Protocol X”, which could possibly be the key to unlocking the mystery of B. However, when you start tampering in science, there is the possibility of something going wrong. The final page of the book leaves a lot to decide if that’s where we’re heading with this series.

Reeves & Kindt present a great chess match between B & Calwell in this issue. The reveals are important & start to answer some questions for readers since issue #1. The tension build is very solid here as well. B doesn’t appear to be all in on what Caldwell is selling. On the flipside, Caldwell’s motivations coming to life give off very different feelings. Is he here for the right reasons or selfish gains? For being more of a calm issue in regards to the action, the writers start piecing certain plots well for the readers.

Garney’s art continues to crush on this book. Each trip thru the timeline has a unique feel to it and adds to the importance to the artifact found. Once that reveal hits, readers can truly embrace its’ importance after the trips thru time. Same can be said for his depiction of Caldwell. The history behind his actions plus the facial reactions really told a solid story. Great final page as well.

Valiant does a great job with the recap opening page. Nobody does this better than Valiant. There is absolutely no excuse for a new reader to not try an issue from them.

The Renegade, the “evil” half of Peter, has been running around awakening new Psiots since we last saw him. There is a particular type of person he’s looking to activate. The only one capable of responding to this is The Harbinger. As this issue progresses, readers see that the Harbinger is stopping these threats as much as he can. It all comes to a head as a monstrous being (featured on the main cover & promo art here) tries tearing apart the city. Readers are going to really enjoy this battle & the twist end to it.

All the while, Peter is still struggling to cope with the fallout from the initial run-in with the Renegade. Even with his closest allies trying to help, it’s still Peter vs. himself. This all comes to a crashing halt when an old friend makes her return into Peter’s life. Readers will also get a great introduction of the next threat to our hero’s plan to make everything “be Better.”

Kelly & Lanzing deliver on diving into the complexity of Peter Stanchek. The character has never been more interesting. When pushed to challenge his “other half”, Peter really wears his emotions on his sleeve. His ideals are not going to be easily achieved. The writing team shows how much he is challenged to “be Better” himself. They also did a fun introduction for the cameo who stopped by. Kelly & Lanzing have made is book a must-read each issue.

Rodriguez has made Psiot City into an incredible visual to see each month as well. The visuals for the “Non Kaiju Zone” were great and amplified the fight. Even with the quieter moments of Peter talking with his allies, Rodriguez makes the most out of them. This really shines with his interaction with CiCi. The panel breakdown set up Peter’s feelings of doubt to where the readers fully feel what he’s going thru. The next story starts off on a very strong note.

POWER RANGERS #16 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the complementary blog to the ODPH Podcast! On this edition….we have finally arrived at the end of the epic story “The Eltarian War”, which has been making waves in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic universe by Boom Studios. Between Mighty Morphin & Power Rangers, Ryan Parrott and the rest of the creative teams have crafted such an incredible story that has hit every benchmark you can think of. It has had some memorable moments that no matter your fandom level of the rangers, readers haven’t been able to put the books down after starting to read them.

POWER RANGERS #16 by Parrott, Francesco Mortarino, Christian Prunesti, Raul Angulo, & Ed Dukeshire closes the final chapter on this story. Let’s see how everything ends, shall we?

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

The whole story has centered around 3 key figures in the MMPR universe: Zordon, Lord Zedd, & their long lost ally Zartus. As Zartus re-appeared in their lives, he brought with his allies & a plan to take down his old friends. With the fate of the universe in the balance, readers saw unlikely alliances unfold. None more personal than Zordon & Lord Zedd. Mighty Morphin #16 closed up most of the stories happening in this saga. Power Rangers #16 serves as an epilogue to what has transpired.

The issue opens with Lord Zedd coming to terms on what has happened with his former allies. The conversation is personal & really brings everything back full circle on what these long time adversaries have been thru. After that, The majority of the issue sums up the impact this has taken on Zordon. He has taken a lot of damage and is running out of time in his current state. There’s a few standout moments that readers will definitely enjoy here.

Meanwhile, Zartus’s last remaining forces come to terms with their defeat. The fallout from this is very clear on the heroes who have fought the good fight during this story. Everyone involved is walking away from this battle changed, which is how it should be with an epic like this. The new direction for both books is set & readers have a lot to be excited for after the Eltarian War.

Give the credit where credit i due. Everything Ryan Parrott has done with this story has been nothing short of phenomenal. Parrott captured the friendship of the past & the animosity of the present between these former allies. The whole story’s heart and soul has been the connection of Zordon, Zedd & Zartus. Even with all the huge action (& trust me, there is plenty with this story), the moments of conversation are what really stands out with “The Eltarian War".” For this issue specifically, Zordon’s conversation with Zedd really puts a nice closure to this saga.

Mortarino’s art really shines thru this issue. The look of Lord Zedd’s one eye starting is a very cool visual that adds something to the conversation with Zordon. Another stand out moment is a “wish” from Zordon which will hit readers in the emotions. There’s another quiet moment with a few characters saying goodbye that Mortarino does a great job presenting to the readers. Solid job all around.

Overall, “The Eltarian War” closes on a strong, emotional note. For long-time MMPR readers, there is much to enjoy and take from this instant classic! For new readers, the story is a great presentation of how to do a BIG event. To be honest, MMPR was never my biggest fandom & I just started reading these books before the “war” kicked off. Now, they’re both must-reads each issue. Make a point to get this whole story next time you hit the LCS. You won’t be disappointed!

First & foremost, I’m a big fan of the recap/intro page. It’s a subtle thing Valiant does with each comic but it helps new readers get caught up to jump in on an issue. I still miss Baron Samedi doing the recaps, but never the less, it’s still great to see.

This issue jumps in with Shadowman in Missouri checking out a condemned hospital. What he finds is definitely not expected. However, Shadowman is trying a new method in handling this threat knowing what the alternative will mean to the Deadside. Before he gets to finish his “diplomatic plan”, he’s stopped by a pair of dangerous figures. Readers will NOT be ready for the reveal of this pair, but as an old school Valiant fan, I completely marked out! ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS REVEAL!

Meanwhile back in New Orleans, some of Shadowman’s allies happen to cross paths with a very familiar face to Valiant readers: The One & only PUNK MAMBO! They make thier way to where Shadowman is losing his fight after some more “friends” show up. From one bad situation unfolds into the issues conclusion which will leave readers very excited and worried for next issue.

Bunn brought back some old friends this issue & there is much to be happy about where this story is going. Shadowman’s plan of attack is a unique one but can it really work? It’s a question that Bunn poses very well. Seeing Punk Mambo return is always a plus. The other appearances are incredible and longtime Valiant fans are gonna be as excited as I was when I saw their reveals. The Deadside War’s slow build is perfectly done & looks to be delivering on the hype.

Andreo’s art really captures the fight scenes perfectly for this issue. The imagery is perfect for the story at hand. It’s dark, frightening and won’t let readers escape the story. Andreo has a very nice vibe for the action sequences in this issue. The moments feel big and deliver on the gravity of the actions. There is a lot to really enjoy with this story.

MIGHTY MORPHIN' #16 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH podcast. On this edition, we are nearing the end of the EPIC Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers saga, “The Eltarian War!” If you are late to this story, make it a point to go back & get the previous “Eltarian” issues. It is well worth the investment (Need more proof? Check out past Parlay Points covering this event).

Mighty Morphin’ #16 by Ryan Parrott, Marco Renna, Walter Baiamonte, Sara Antonellini, Sharon Marino, & Ed Dukeshire (Cover by Inhyuk Lee) from Boom Studios drop the penultimate issue of this story on readers Feb. 9th. With the fate of the MMPR Universe hanging in the balance, how do the forces of good fare against the overwhelming odds? Let’s jump in this issue and find out, shall we?

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue starts off with a flashback sequence to where Zophram (aka Lord Zedd), Zartus & a young Zordon meet for the first time. It’s a very telling moment considering how these three have been at the center of “The War” this entire time. Readers are then fast-forwarded to present time where the battle between the former allies continues on. The resolution to this battle will have you yelling “HOLY S**T!” so no other hints other than that.

Meanwhile on Earth, the Rangers are doing all they can to survive when they have a familiar face with a new trick up their sleeve. With said character involved, there’s a LOT of emotional reactions happening (and rightfully so considering their past actions). The Empyreals are still bringing a fight within these pages. However….. let’s just say, what happens to them next no one will see coming. From that fallout, readers are left with a solid final page to start the final issue of this amazing story.

This review might be more vague than usual ones, but there are so much happening in this book that I don’t want to take a chance about ruining those impactful moments. It will be well worth the time to grab this issue and have your own fan reactions without knowing too much.

WOW. Simply WOW. Parrott really drove home how painfully tragic the story between Zordon, Zedd & Zartus was. When readers finally get to that end page, they can actually feel the emotion impact of what happened between these old friends. The other heroes involved have their time as well, especially with how the threat of the Empyreals is finally dealt with. The fallout from this battle will be felt for many stories to come. This wasn’t an issue that had “one and dones”. Personally, I can’t wait to see how a certain character takes on being a new “king” with a real threat at his disposal.

Renna’s art delivers on those big moments. Renna & co’s work on bringing the battle between the three old friends to life really jumped out this issue. Full page panel moment to put an exclamation point on one of them was a big eye catching moment. Same with how an Empyreal was stopped once and for all. The action panels are great here but how Renna does the subtle facial expressions (Zartus is a prime example) amplified how deeply personal their story was. Incredible job all around.

BASILISK #7 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH Podcast. On this edition, we are checking out the latest issue of Basilisk by Cullen Bunn, Jonas Scharf, Alex Guimaraes, & Ed Dukeshire for Boom Studios. It has been an excellent read thus far. The increasingly dangerous battle between Hannah & the Chimera, whose powers are based around the five senses, was last seen with a failed attempt to end things once and for all. How has the story evolved from there? Let’s check out the latest issue & find out, shall we?

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

After a flashback of Hannah’s first moments after being the lone survivor of a Chimera attack, readers see her and Regan, A Chimera defector, are on the run. Their failed attack has now led Jimmy-Boy on a chase after them. There is a TON of action going on here that is gonna please fans of the book. Hannah becomes distracted with everything going on & when Jimmy-Boy catches up to her, the following moments are intense & really hit very hard. It’s not for the squeamish so keep that in mind if a new reader.

The other half of this issue focuses on Vanessa, another member of the Chimera, is waiting in the aftermath of the last battle with Hannah & Regan. While waiting for Jimmy-Boy to complete his seek & destroy mission, Vanessa tries deflecting the truth from Cara, another Chimera member, about their powers. However, readers are in for a few surprises by issues’ end that really cranks up the Chimera threat to a new level. No spoilers here for the big moments, but fans will enjoy what they read here.

Bunn really pushed the pace with this issue. From the initial offset, the buildup to Hannah facing off with Jimmy-Boy is very well done. The tension keeps climbing and never slows down until its’ conclusion. It’s brutal and wild as their battles have been thus far. Meanwhile, Vanessa’s actions have a “slow burn” feel that when she makes her big move, they’re THAT more impactful. Bunn balances this issue out flawlessly.

Scharf brings the action with each panel between Hannah, Regan & Jimmy-Boy. The imagery is brutal, violent & delivers on the severity of what’s going on. Like previously said, this series doesn’t pull punches. Readers will see some crazy scenes within this book, which is the only way to describe the Chimera’s actions. Even the subtle build for Vanessa’s game-changer move is done with seamless effort. Scharf has crafted this fractured world very well & it will hook readers from page one until the end.

Overall, this might be the best issue of Basilisk yet. Bunn & Scharf drive up the tension and when th action happens, there is nothing pulled back. It is intense as you’ll see in a comic. It’s equally matched by the fallout & the domino fall reaction from Vanessa. This issue is an absolute must-grab at the LCS.

HOUSE OF SLAUGHTER #4 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH podcast. On this edition, We’re checking out the current issue from the Something Is Killing The Children spin-off hit: House Of Slaughter #4 by James Tynion, Tate Brombal, Chris Shehan, Miquel Muerto, Andworld Design & Werther Dell’edera for Boom Studios. The behind the scenes look at where monster hunters are made hasn’t disappointed & the current story involving Aaron Slaughter has been a fantastic read. Let’s jump in and check the latest chapter in this story, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The series thus far has been taking a flashback look at Aaron’s younger years and his first love, Jace. When they jump to the future, it is easy to tell something has happened & much like their love, it won’t be good. In the past, Aaron & Jace’s relationship is discovered by Jessica, a well known name at the House & Aaron is given a hard order that he can’t say no to: End it. Reason being is the House recognizes Love as a weakness & will only get someone killed. No matter what Aaron tries pleading, his case falls on deaf ears.

Meanwhile (in this “present time” Aaron goes to complete his mission of killing Jace. There is a whole sew of emotions brought up here & a “final request” by Jace. It’s counterbalanced by Jace’s first hunt being in the House. After surviving that, Jace escapes the grounds with Aaron& tells him his true intentions. It’s not the story Aaron wants to hear & the ending will drive that point home.

One of the most heartbreaking issues you will ever read. Tynion really puts Aaron thru all the emotions that come with finding & losing love at a young age. The flashback sequences with Aaron pleading with Jessica to the rooftop chat, readers can’t help but feel for the pain Aaron’s going thru. Tynion hits readers with so much emotion that when the story flashes forward, you have to guess how long these feelings lingered with no closure. What an intense issue.

The art plays well into the story being told here. Shehan’s panel set up works so well for images being presented here. The “Then & Now” designs gives readers an easy path to follow everything happening here. The talk with Jessica really stands out for this issue. The side-to-side double pages is a fresh look to what is happening here. Even the “little” Monster action readers get here is noteworthy and gives a small break to the tale being told here. Excellent job!

This issue kicks off with Phiro, Rhian, Telosi, Aleia & Orinsonth finding the Morphinaut & dealing with a world-destroying threat (now identified as Dark Specter) heading right towards them. Trying to process everything is a luxury that they unfortunately don’t have. With danger coming right at them, the young heroes make an escape after shutting down the arch which was their only way to access the Morphin grid.

Our team escapes and readers get a small glimpse of what the Phantom Ranger can do. There is a cool reunion between these teens and a lost friend. With the notion of Specter making his move, these heroes take a shot at possibly finding a way to stop him & saving the Morphinaut at the same time. Although it looks like they might have something to celebrate, these young heroes know that there is no time to step back. They have to press forward with a mission of uncertainty: Protect the grid at all costs.

Very fun issue here. Andelfinger teases enough about the Phantom Ranger without taking too much away from the other heroes involved. The pacing is good & allows the story to develop on its own time. This shines thru when the group takes the shot at stabilizing the Phantom Ranger. The moment isn’t rushed and the result is greater for it.

The art is a great compliment to the story as well. Ragazzoni makes this story stand out on pages. Even the Whendi story, while brief, jumps out at readers to notice. Also, There is a lot of detail work done for the character group panels. Juggling around that many characters while not sacrificing page space isn’t easy. It’s done very well. The splash pages are very awesome, esp the next evolution of these heroes.

ONCE AND FUTURE #24 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH podcast. On tis edition, we’re catching up on one of my favorite comics on the market right now: Once & Future by BOOM Studios. This imaginative story created by Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, & Ed Dukeshire never ceases to surprise me each month. Where else do you get crazy monsters, perfect character moments with Bridgette McGuire & one of the most creative flips on the King Arthur mythos? Issue #24 is the latest chapter so let’s not waste any more time & jump in, shall we?

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

This issue kicks off right where we left our heroes: Bridgette & co are trying to assess a possible ally or enemy in their fight. It’s an interesting back and forth but ends the only way it can: Taking a risk and closing With a great Bridgette line. I’m not gonna spoil that here but it did bring a smile out when I read it. She is one of the best written characters in comics without question.

The majority of the issue shifts to the battle between both Arthurs that has been brewing for quite some time now. The battle is finally had at Badon, which there’s a very cool flashback scene for. This does not disappoint. Very cool imagery happening here. The resolution was very “Once and Future” and definitely not a bad thing. How the fallout will play from here should be fun to read.

The ending of this issue is what most fans will be buzzing about. Bridgette and her team make a play to get some more help to fight the Arthurs & it’ one of the most legendary “People’s champions” in history!

Gillen’s writing of this issue was very solid. Like previously stated, how Bridgette is written makes her one of the best characters in comics. Being the most experienced to face the threats at hand, She always comes off calm, strong and ready with the one-liners. The battle between the Arthurs was a fun moment as well. How Merlyn played a factor in this was interesting. Never thought I would hear that line yelled in battle but that’s the brilliance of Once & Future’s writing.

Dan Mora delivers on the action yet again here. The moments all have that “big fight feel” & the battles are literally jumping off the pages. The visuals really added another level to the story going on with the Arthurs. The battle was brutal, as it should be. One of the staples of Once and Future is their action. This issue doesn’t fail in bringing that front and center here.

THE HARBINGER #4 (VALIANT ENTERTAINMENT 2022)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH Podcast. On this edition, the “Year Of Valiant” shines bright with one of the best books at the LCS right now: The Harbinger by COLLIN KELLY, JACKSON LANZING, ROBBI RODRIGUEZ, RICO RENZI & HASSAN OTSMANE-ELHAOU by Valiant Entertainment.

The book has been a consistently solid read since the character of Peter Stanchek has resurfaced in the Valiant Universe. Currently, the latest story involves Stanchek remembering who he is…literally, while the rest of the world is after him. Issue #3 gave a very strong cliffhanger that gave readers some questions that need immediate answers. Let’s see if issue #4 delivers on that, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

To say Peter Stanchek is a complex individual is an understatement. While being one of Valiant’s most powerful beings, he is also one of the most damaged. Thru this current series, we’ve seen Peter as someone finding himself and who he’s supposed to be. By the end of last issue, we find that his past (literally) might have caught up to him.

“The Renegade” claims to be Peter Stanchek as well. Readers get some clarity on this question right from the start. In an “Angel/Devil” balance type of way, readers see that the Renegade is build from all of Peter’s darker experiences. The overall creative team brings this battle to life very well with use of different color schemes. It’s a very cool look at the insight of a character such as Stanchek & how his actions made him into something else…literally.

The resolution to all this sets a new stat quo into the man currently claiming to be “The Harbinger.” The phrase “Be Better” has never had so much deeper meaning behind it & the people of the Valiant Universe had better be ready for what’s coming….good and bad.

It might sound like a broken record at this point, but what Kelly & Lanzing are doing in this book is so different than what you see in superhero comics today. With a character as infamous as Stanchek is, the writers have really broken him down and given him some new sides to this character that readers have never seen before. What an antagonist to create for our hero here! It’s a great take on a character that isn’t exactly the most innocent yet trying to be a hero when it’s all said & done.

Rodriguez’s art in this book continues to be a perfect compliment to the story happening here. The imagery to show what’s going on in Stanchek’s mind gives the pages a completely stand-out vibe. Readers can basically “feel” what’s happening within this story. Quieter flashbacks mixed with excellent color balancing gives the fight in this issue a stronger presence.

THE LEGEND OF VOX MACHINA (PRIME VIDEO 2022)

The Legend Of Vox Machina” is FINALLY hitting Prime Video January 28th! In case you’re not familiar with how this show came to be, it’s an incredible story. Vox Machina was the first livestreamed campaign story to come from Critical Role, a media company created by a group of voice actors who had been taking part in RPG’s dating back to 2012. Their content was a major hit & in 2019, they started a Kickstarter to produce an animated project based around Vox Machina. The Kickstarter was extremely successful, raising over $11 MILLION Dollars. It broke records at Kickstarter for film & Video projects. From there, the simple idea from one animated special has now grown into a hot content property picked up by Amazon Studios, which has signed off for 2 seasons & 24 episodes in total!

The ODPH team was in attendance for this show’s panel at NYCC 2021 & this was the first time we met the characters of Vax’ildan (Voiced by Liam O'Brien), Vex’ahlia (Laura Bailey), Percy de Rolo (Taliesin Jaffe), Pike Trickfoot (Ashley Johnson), Grog Strongjaw (Travis Willingham), Keyleth (Marisha Ray), Sylas Briarwood* (Matthew Mercer - *Mercer also voices more characters on the show) & Scanlan Shorthalt (Sam Riegel). The NYCC panel did an amazing presentation & I’ve had my eye on this show since.

I was fortunate to be allowed an early screening of the show before the January 28th premiere:

One thing of note going in: this is a NSFW show with dialogue and situations so keep that in mind, but it takes nothing away from what you’re seeing on screen. Viewers will also hear the friendship between the voice actors shine thru here as well. There is such a fun energy about this show that it will no doubt hit all expectations.

The animation style from Titmouse really gives this show a unique look and feel. The moments feel big and presenting such an elaborate fanatsy world with ease is something to applaud. Each character is given enough moments to capture viewers attention & lock them in on the story going on. There is no question by the end of the 2nd episode (at the latest), you’ll have your favorite member of this group picked out.

Even if RPG/fantasy isn’t your usual choice of programing, you definitely want to give “The Legend Of Vox Machina” a watch. Vox has a very likeable cast that keeps you engaged with every challenge thrown at them. At the end of the day, this “misfit family” of characters & their stories will win viewers over with excellent voice acting & superb animation. The first 3 episodes drop January 28th on Amazon Prime Video

Let me know what you think of “The Legend of Vox Machina” on Twitter. As always, thanks for reading.

*** POTENTIAL SPOILERS WARNING ***

The issue wastes no time hitting readers with big actions. The Empyreals are bringing the fight to the heroes on Earth. However, once a certain White Tiger Dragonzord (FTW!!!!!!!!) jumps into the fight, it actually feels like maybe, just maybe, things might start turning toward the Rangers favor. It also is one of the best battles you’ll see in the MMPR Universe.

Meanwhile, the face-off at the center of the war heats up more. The history of Zordon, LordZedd & Zartus has been one of the best parts of this saga & we now get a big payoff to the buildup. With the uneasy tension between these three grabbing readers on every page, the moments shared in this issue will not disappoint.

The rest of the issue keeps the action going with more epic moments. Even with the odds against them, the Rangers are holding their own & with some unplanned help, readers gets another amazing moment. Fans of the Omega Rangers are gonna be super amped up for a certain section of this book that I won’t spoil but when it hits, readers will be jumping out of the chairs hyped. There’s also a very cool cliffhanger to close this chapter of the Eltarian War on that you need to see first!

Just when I don’t think this story can get any better, Ryan Parrott pulls out a moment that makes me as a reader very amped up to read more! At this stage of the war, there are a great deal of moving storylines that all need ample time to grow. Parrott does a great job of balancing these out to where it feels like no one is being overlooked in such a big battle. One of the strongest arcs in this story continues to steal scenes when written: Zordon vs Lord Zedd vs Zartus. With such heavy hitters involved, readers can easily follow along and certain moments will hit to get an instant reaction.

Mortarino gets a small split of art Duties with Marco Renna in this issue. Nothing skips a beat with the quality here. Mortarino’s “monster” fight scenes feel epic and bring out the heaviness of the battle moments. It’s everything readers will want out of these fight scenes. The art contrast also works with the Zordon group fight as well. Giving these moments time with such an ensemble cast isn’t easy but the creative tea really does a fantastic job with this issue.

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH podcast. On this edition….The Year Of Valiant is officially kicked off with Shadowman #5 by CULLEN BUNN, PEDRO ANDREO, JORDIE BELLAIRE & CLAYTON COWLES for Valiant Entertainment. The latest run of adventures from Valiant’s supernatural hero, Jack Boniface, has been an excellent read with the last installment giving readers chills to what horror awaits our hero & the rest of the Valiant Universe. If you haven’t checked out that run (Issues 1-4 written by Bunn & art by Jon Davis-Hunt), make a point to dive in. However, issue #5 is a great jump-on point for new readers as well. How does the next phase of the adventures of Shadowman kick off? Let’s check this issue out, shall we?

First and foremost, Valiant kicks off this issue with a quick recap page explaining Boniface to readers. It’s a subtle move but one I think is very important to welcome new readers into stories. I really enjoy the set-up for the page’s look (no Baron Samedi is a slight bummer, but very cool artwork makes up for it).

The issue kicks off in New England with a child practicing some dark magic in attempts to resurrect his dead mother. What he gets is a lot more than what he bargained for. Meanwhile, in New Orleans, readers get a glimpse of a moment of normalcy for our hero. playing sax and dealing with an old friend, Alyssa. During this exchange, Jack breaks down some lingering thoughts that have carried over from the previous arc. Things are changing faster than he can control & you can hear the doubt in his voice. Even with some possibilities for help, Jack feels like this is something to handle alone.

He gets his wish as he leaves to handle a big threat. Once it’s settled, Jack focuses his attention to unveiling a possible plan to solve this issue once & for all. At the same time, there are others watching these moves & have plans to thwart Boniface’s plans for their own games. Readers are given a solid cliffhanger when an old threat makes a bold proclamation.

Few people have mastered the level of horror like Bunn has. The opening sequence is very bone-chilling and gives the rest of the issue a strong start. Bunn also creates a fun sequence where Jack is being “normal” in New Orleans. We haven’t seen too much of this in recent issues & this is a fun compliment to the serious story being weaved. There are great building moments throughout this issue for the war that is coming within these pages.

Andreo makes a big splash with the art for this issue. The panels deliver on strong action scenes (see the previous panel in this review) that give a big impact for Boniface’s return. It’s balanced out very well with the quieter moments with the young child. No matter what character Andreo is thrown here, he really brings something special out of each page he does. For new readers, this duo makes a dynamic impression. Longtime Valiant/Shadowman fans are in for a treat here as well.

The Eltarian war carries on in Mighty Morphin ‘ #15 by Ryan Parrott, Marco Renna, Walter Baiamonte, Sharon Marino & Ed Dukeshire (Cover by Inhyuk Lee) for Boom Studios has been nothing short of incredible.

No matter what range of MMPR fandom you have, this story has been engaging with every twist and turn involving Zordon, Zartus & Lord Zedd with the fate of the universe hanging in the balance. After Power Rangers #14 cliffhanger ending, I’ve been counting down the days until this book dropped. Lets waste no more time & dive into this chapter, shall we?

This chapter kicks off with a flashback to a previous battle over 10,000 years ago involving Zordon, Zartus & Zophram (aka Lord Zedd). Seeing this backstory adds a lot of extra layers to the present time where Zordon, fully ready to fight, confronts Lord Zedd. This fight does NOT disappoint. There’s so much emotion going on between the tow. Readers are in for a BIG treat here. Let the action begin!

While this is happening on the moon, Earth has its’ hands full with the Empyreals making their move against our heroes. Seeing the elevated stakes brings the best out of the Rangers’ forces. Zartus is still pulling strings in the background until something happens that changes the course of events into dire territory. However, there is one last action taken on the last page that really sets the tempo for the next arc in this saga. Great cliffhanger ending.

The creative team delivered on the fight we’ve been waiting to see. Parrott captures all the build up tension between Zedd & Zordon so once they clash, it takes this conflict to a personal level that readers feel with each panel. The back and forth conversation between these two will give fans a moment they won’t forget when it concludes. The battle on Promethea is nothing to be overlooked in this issue as well. Parrott’s build for this whole saga has been excellent & this event lives up to the hype without question!

Renna’s art matches the moments perfectly. Translating the tension between Zordon and Zedd during their fight is no easy task, but it is pulled off flawlessly here. The Promethea battle has many characters involved but Renna balances them all out with enough time without taking anything away from the threat of the Empyreals. There is much to be excited about with this issue.

Overall, Mighty Morphin’ #15 continues on the strong presentation going on in the Eltarian War. Excellent storytelling mixed with solid art gives readers a must-read at the LCS this week. I can’t stress enough: if you’re just jumping into this story now, for whatever reason, make a point to go back & read the lead-in issues along with the previous Eltarian war issues. They will gives you more of an emotion punch when the battles hit with this issue & this sage is a can’t miss story!

BASILISK #6 (BOOM STUDIOS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH Podcast. On this edition, we’re taking another look the battle with the Chimera in the latest issue of Basilisk by Boom Studios. Basilisk #6 by Cullen Bunn, Jonas Scharf, Alex Guimaraes, & Ed Dukeshire kicks off the first week of 2022 for Boom & there is much to discuss. Let’s not waste anymore time on catching up with this crazy saga, shall we?

*** POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING ***

First and foremost, how incredible is Jonas Scharf’s cover art for this issue!

This issue picks up on Hannah, who’s vowed vengeance for what the Chimera has done to her family, & Regan, a former member of the Chimera, track the evil force down to their current location. The Chimera, who’s powers are based off the five senses, are making a stop at a shopping mall in their deadly journey. Once at the mall, Regan & Hannah take their shot (literally) to end this evil once and for all.

However, things do not go their way. Another factor they didn’t expect makes a move. This causes for some fast-paced action & a solid cliffhanger for next issue. Readers are also treated to more of Hannah’s back story before the Chimera crashed into her life.

If there’s one thing to bank on when you read Basilisk, you’re guaranteed when the Chimera attacks, it’s brutal & no punches are held. Bunn crafts a very strong narrative with Hannah & Regan’s plan to stop the Chimera. Readers can feel the desperation in Hannah’s actions. She is a character that isn’t meant for this supernatural powered world but is trying by any means to embrace her role in it. The dynamic with her & Regan is something to watch as well. The “frienemies” vibe is very well noted here.

Scharf’s art continues to reflect this intense world masterfully. The Chimera are not nice people & don’t hold back on what they do. Scharf gives readers many examples of this throughout the issue. His art really shines with the action sequences with Hannah & the Chimera. Readers can feel the tension & see how brutal this battle truly is. When readers can feel how high the stakes are, the creative team has done their job & it shows here.

What I’m more intrigued with how Hannah’s backstory will play into the overall story. How it is presented is completely different from the rest of the book. We’ve now seen flaws in her character & how this will get mixed into present time remains to be seen. Excellent job all around.

The saga of the Chimera doesn’t slow down with this issue. Hannah’s mission to end them once and for all continues in a very strong direction. With the first trade paperback being released last week, this is a perfect time to get caught up on this book if you haven’t read Basilisk yet. If you’ve been reading this book since the first issue, you’ll really enjoy what goes on with this issue. Make sure to grab a copy from your LCS.

Once And Future #23 (Boom! Studios)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary blog to the ODPH Podcast. On this edition, we’re continuing to check out one of my favorite books out: Once & Future by BOOM! Studios. What an absolute wild story inside these page. Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, & Ed Dukeshire have been talking readers on such a creative trip mixing in the mythos of King Arthur with unique twists that make this saga all their own. Issue #23 is hitting the shelves this week so lets see what the latest happenings are going on here, shall we?

The issue opens up with Bridgette having a long standoff (via sniper rifle) with Nimue. This is not the typical Mother-Daughter relationship but would we expect anything “normal” here? Duncan & Rose can only just sit back and watch all this unfold. It’s a very dramatic sequence of events that carry through to an unlikely conclusion. Nimue’s story is gonna be one to keep an eye on in the future.

The rest of the issue is a wild trip through this mysterious world. Where else do you see Giants, magical creatures & knights of the round table all under one narrative? As for our heroes, we get left with an introduction to a new character that readers will have to guess whose side they’re on.

Gillen delivers on another solid adventure in this book. The standoff between Bridgette and her daughter drove this issue. Not as many wild battle scenes as recent issues have had, but the character moments between these two were very noteworthy. Readers are also treated to some imaginative storytelling as well. Any time we have a crazed giant, a deadly flying insect & magic beans in a sequence, it always jumps off the page. Few can pull it off as well as Gillen does.

Mora crushes it on the art duties yet again. The standoff panels where readers see Bridgette thru the scope is a very catching piece. It adds to the dramatic standoff. The side stories also are presented very strong. From the Knights “hunt” to the last page introduction, Mora keeps the story moving & gives each side story time to shine and stand-out on its own.

Once & Future #23 continues on its’ unique story & builds with great character moments. There’s many tales being told here and readers are in for a treat when they pick up this series. Make it a point to grab this issue from your LCS & check out the back issues as well. Once & Future is very consistent on delivering a quality book while being extremely open to flip narratives to create something original.
