With the world possibly ending, the mood is skeptically hoping for a miracle. Williamson walks readers into the “final” goodbyes with a sense of question. The opening segment with a look at an uneasy partnership. Doomsday as Time Trapper has been such a unique dynamic added to the series. The writing forces his influence to have Supes search for answers. It results in an emotionally charged fallout.

Readers watch as the Earth’s fate provides a frantic attempt to save & reflect. Seeing the Kent family arrive is a surge in the impact of events. It eventually gives way to Lois Lane. Williamson pens a very layered scene with Lois taking lead. This thrusts events into the closing act. There are secrets revealed that test the foundation of what is involved in K.O. This concludes with another surprise element in play. Just when you think you have some answers, this issue adds more questions. Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Art duties are split between Barrows and Ferreira for this round. Superman’s stubborn looks upon Doomsday transfers to an impressive two page splash. Events move to an inquisitive Fortress of Solitude moment. The art brings out Jor-El’s spirit as Clark looks for answers. There’s a true sense of wonder with the questions filling the air. This transitions nicely to the race to evacuate Earth.

The full page image of the “Supership” is imposing on readers. It takes a backseat to the Kent family reunion. The panels fill with heartwarming moments as the situation starts becoming grave. A strong full page image sends Superman into the dangerous field. This allows for Lois to grab the spotlight. Her side-quest leads to a few unveilings along with a shocking guest appearance. This builds towards a shocking closing image. The full page image throws a very big variable into play. Who knows where this will lead?

OVERALL GRADE: 8.8

The Heart of Apokolips hides many truths. Leave it to the world’s greatest reporter to unlock some. Williamson’s writing peels away at the layers of mystery. The art team shines with balancing the emotions and action. The final page throws a K.O. all it own for New Comic Book Day.
