*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
In dealing with Krypton’s fall, trying to reinvent the wheel can be difficult. Arron swoops in to throw readers a definitive new look. Six years prior, Kal-El being a “struggling” student creates a new perspective on his future. This only gets amplified by the society class of the Els. Being considered low-level workers, the writing eludes to more discovery behind the truth.
The family bond turns out to be their biggest strengths. Whether it’s Kal’s reassurance about school to the levels to defend each other, Arron hits readers in all the emotions. This only grows stronger when the planet starts dying around them. Pacing speeds into the fear of what Jor-El has been preparing for. It leads to a strong reveal of plans, even if the hour glass keeps sinking. The closing portion throws another curve into the mix. It is one that should have a larger impact as the Man of Tomorrow escapes the memories of the past.
Sandoval and Arreola bring a heartwarming vision of Krypton to readers in the initial act. A big two page spread shows the family on an escape from society. The art ensnares the emotions as a young Kal gets support on choices he makes. The good mood switches very sharply as Krypton’s sickness grows.
Within a two page splash, the deadly corruption grows louder. Readers watch as the all too familiar green images grow on the pages. This leads into a drastic time for the young boy. Watching his father get taken into custody is a tough moment. The panels rebound into big action. It is capped off by a full page image of a new symbol of hope. Events speed forward into another full page reveal. Knowing where things are heading, it only adds to the final page’s mystery. A simple panel speaks loudly as the chapter leaves readers wanting more.
FINAL POINT: 9
