LOVE AND WAR #3 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay Points, the complementary comic book blog to the ODPH podcast. On this edition, we’re continuing to follow the rom-com adventures of one of Comixology Originals’ stand out books. In case you are looking for it via print form, the book will be released via Dark Horse Comics later this year. Love And War #3 by Andrew Wheeler, Guillermo Saavedra, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, and C.R. Chua continues the chronicles of Domo and how everything is fair in Love and (Tug O) War. Let’s just into the latest chapter and see what’s happening, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue starts off with Jocosta, Dom’s rival for team captain, preparing for a team building event. To her surprise, Domo is on the bus and ready to go. Over the past few issues, readers have seen Domo distracted by the loss of his love Gabriel to another school while a new student, Emil, has made a quick impact on the team.

Once they arrive at Lake Ludwiga, the team from Aster Academy is surprised by the arrival of Kingdom College (no thanks to Jocosta). With Gabriel leading the team, how does Domo make an impact to win the title of team captain? Will Jocosta’s plan backfire on her in more ways than one? Plus where does Emil fit in? Readers will have those questions and more raised by issues’ end.

Wheeler keeps up the tension on the team with Jocosta’s scheming. What should be a team building exercise couldn’t be further from it. Readers will be seeing Domo’s navigation thru these moments and wonder how this will all end up. The surprise of Gabriel was a solid twist and considering how this issue concludes, readers will be very interested to see his reaction.

Saavedra takes over art duties from Killian Ng this issue. With the change, the book doesn’t loose any of it’s light-hearted charm. It has its’ funny moments and mixes in the romantic struggles of Domo easily. I especially dug the “Street Fighter”-esque face off panel between Domo and Jocosta early in this issue. If you’ve been reading since issue #1, the vibe and energy remains the same thru the creative change.

Overall, Love and War #3 continues it’s rom-com saga of tug-o-war without missing a beat. Entertaining Story and art carry this issue through the mid-way point. It’s a fun book that fans will enjoy and want to take a peek at next time they swing thru Comixology.
