*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING" ***

The issue kicks off with an all grown up Alice shopping in a store. The visit isn’t what it seems as she is accused of stealing the bunny by the owner for shady reasons. What readers find out is Alice’s life has drastically changed since her original story. Alice is paired up with a shady figure named Morton, who is supplying her pills to escape the “real world.” Alice’s adult life is very somber with no real sense of anything good surrounding it. Her family isn’t welcoming. This becomes a huge area of tension. Alice is playing a dangerous game with her addiction to escape reality and return to Wonderland.

After going back to see Morton for more pills, she witnesses something that will play bigger ramifications as this series progresses. It’s something fans of the original tale won’t be expecting and should brace for a new look at a classic character. Very solid final page!

Panosian is really crafting an unique tale within this book. Tackling the ramifications of the “wonderland” story is something that has some great avenues to take Alice on a different path. There are more mature tones with this book than what readers might expect. This version of Alice shows many layers to her character. The life she lives now will only spiral more out of the normal settings. This issue shows a lot of potential for some great stories. I was a big fan of the narration for this issue as well. There’s a lot that readers will be interested to see here.

The artwork is captures the London time Alice is in while giving a whole new feel to Wonderland. Spalletta does a great job of capturing this time period. The characters of Morton & Earl really stand out with more than their debuts let on. Alice’s time in Wonderland really felt like a big moment as well. The break in the time line for the stop in Wonderland works well with the pacing of this issue. Nothing felt too rushed and the art showcased the internal struggles Alice has. It really complemented the writing in this book.
